Preface
Design for Space follows different aesthetically, functional and emotional values to mankind and also helps to create a more comfortable life cycle in respect to art, culture, sociology, aesthetics, and light. The concept that space can have a quality other than emptiness is difficult to grasp. When a building is entered, floor, supports, walls, and a ceiling are seen, all of which should observe, while the space, in the sense that one is accustomed to think of it, is void: the absence of mass, filled by air.

(Sanskar Kendra) The Sanskar Kendra was built by none other than the renowned architect Le Corbusier himself in 1954 as a cultural center of Ahmedabad. Located near the Sardar bridge in the vicinity of the famous Tagore Hall, across the National Institude of Design it is a discerning example of modernist architecture.
In order to preserve its architecture and nurture a space of culture and community, the Vastu Shilpa Foundation has made efforts to revitalize and restore this space by starting a City Museum. This museum is aimed at celebrating the living heritage of the city and the pioneering spirit of its people. As Vastu Shilpa states, "To capture these nuances of the city of Ahmedabad, the museum is consciously conceived as a linear journey through overlapping and interconnected facets of the city life ranging from arts to industries, crafts to cultures, history to architecture, individual to institution." Also on display here are old relics, sculptures and the history of this city, informed by photographs, illustrated and textual panels. Sanskar Kendra also houses the famous Kite Museum designed by Bhanu Shah who has created a fascinating and striking collection of kites with a rare devotion since he was 21 years of age. The museum needs some revision to connect with the changing times but it can still be worth a visit to a kite enthusiast. 5

“Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris, better known as Le Corbusier October 6, 1887 – August 27, 1965), was an architect, designer, painter, urban planner, writer, and one of the pioneers of what is now called modern architecture. He was born in Switzerland and became a French citizen in 1930. His career spanned five decades, with his buildings constructed throughout Europe, India, and America”.

Form Evolution:
These are some examples of the buildings that aslo exist close to the form of Sanskar Kendra building. the form of building has gone through the follwing evolution generated by Le orbuiser.
Wind spread- Pinwheel arrangement 1937- Frank lloyd wright-linear element about four defined core. Orthogonal spiral
Pin wheel
Solomon R. Guggenheim - Pinwheel arrangement 1956 frank lloyd wright element about an implied core.

1st Space ( Open Exhibition of Sculpture):
The Sketch of sanskar kendra shows the condition of the corners of the building where the corner is defining the confluence of the two planes. this condition emphasizes the completion of the form. The Round gutter at the bottom emphasizes the continuity of the building surface of the form further emphasizing on the complete form which is independent of the ground.

T.H.
*Regular path leads people directly into the building and this space gets unnoticed usually. the building was designed so that it does’nt require sun light and has minimum openings or windows. So once we go inside the main building this part of the building cant be viewed.
Drawback of the space: *Being in open may cause detoriation by climate( sun & rain) *This is not a part of the building. divided by road between building and this open exhibition area. * No sun *Wind to this place is also slow and hindered by tagore hall and by kochrab village. * No electric lights to this area. *Inactive place. *High contrast from ground floor under building area. * To some extent “this path goes to wash room area may be a reason for negligence * Suffered with lack of sinages.

2nd Space (Open Ground Area):The green ground in front of sanskar kendra building also has a potential for enhancement.
*Open ground plantation at periphery. *Covered with green grass. *Towards the main entrance but nothing to do with any activity . *The trees around this open space helps to cool the wind going inside the building.
Possibilities of *Sitting area *Shelter area *Sinages area/ walk through guidelines. 27

3rd Space (pond area): The only organic form in the le carbusier building is the pond area. he has plotted the chandigadh map on main hole covers during designing the chandigadh residency. the same way this organic form is ahmedabad map. this space is blessed with ground, sun heat, water, wind and open sky.
sun
This has a spitual value as well as its a hub of building walk trough. le cerbusier founded his idea of an unlimited growth of museum. a cube standing on supports with an entrance from below into the centre point of the structure from which the rooms spins out in endless spirals. It also creates the micro climate inside the building. the tempreture cotrols by the pond. open pond area and under building pond area keep on cerculating the heat.

Whirls at different points of a huge spiral (nautilus shell). here axis are not exactly verticle, because of what whirls are follwing diffent faceings. it fills the area as well as has spritual value going towords Sun. many variation in terms of colors of whirls, facing of whirls, level of whirls, different design of whirl and rpms of whirls may be a big intrest of the space. 33
Design for space/ Sanskar kendra/ suneel
Two color whirl:
Whilr has one of the great advantage over these all exploration, is whirl doesn’t need wind from any specific direction. means any wind can rotates the whirl.
34
Design for space/ Sanskar kendra/ suneel
An idea to create Sound with the help of wind coming to pond area, gone through different concepts*adding cow bell to periphery of whirl. *imitation of wind chime structure. *clothes rustle sound created by hanging fabric stripes. *water fall/ flow sound. merry go round with suspended anklet (ghunghroo) or many of it with different hight may give intresting visual with melody of ghunghroo

Water&Wind active installation:
Floating installation may be an apropriate thought for the pond area, which is water active installation. taking lotus as an inspiration (see figure) this installation contains water active and wind active elements. Along with this some Graffiti (by old coin/mosaic/pebbles)on the under water surface of pond may add value to it.
36
Design for space/ Sanskar kendra/ suneel
Pneumatic Installation: As this place is in thr middle of the builing and can reach to high balloon installation and that can be visible from out side of builing. The view of Sanskar Kendra is blocked from the east and south east part of the building by trees while north-east is blocked by Tagore-hall. This idea can be used as a sign for Sanskar Kendra which can be viewed from a distance.
*In such arrangment there are potection from direct fall of sun/rain/sky articles.

Pin-wheel:
The ideology of the great architec “lecorbusier was pinwheel endlessness while making this building.
Pin-wheel is highly rooted in ahmedabad culture It is significant in the dynamic and colorful culture of Gujarat and has everybody experienced the joy and playfullness of pin-wheel.
Direction of rotation is optional. it can be controlled by folds during construction of pinwheel. so this can be one more alteration other than-color, graphics, height of stand, size of pin wheel and style of pin-wheel. 40
Design for space/ Sanskar kendra/ suneel
These Tree like structures co-ordinate with the organic form of the pond and enhance the feel of life, along with that it may also work as an indicator for wind direction.
41
Design for space/ Sanskar kendra/ suneel
This is the Final mock up where pin-wheels are arranged and placed in a golden spiral. pin-wheels size also reduces from open end to centre. Hight of every pin-wheel is not equal so each pin-wheel gets wind.

Exploration:
* Started with 2 colour pin-wheel, arranged in order of colour transition along with the skeleton. *Next move on mono-colour transition in differrnt colour variation. *Number of pin-wheel has been increased in image. *As the rpms increases the visibility of pin-wheel decreases.
43

Details: *Maximum hight of installation is 8.5 ft and lowest pin-wheeel (the centre one) is placed on 20 inches up from the bottom of pond. *Skeleton is equiped with extra rod to support the pin-wheel rod for fast wind total 60 rods are welded horizontaly on a spiral base which stay in to the floor of pond. *S.S rod (2.5 cm diameter) is used for the frame. Top most end of the rods, where pin wheels is to be fix, has inner threading and pin wheel can be mount easily by a 6 screw.it has hexagonal end which prevent pin wheel to fall off. *Number of pin-wheel is increased. *This arrangement gives more wind to bigger pin-wheel and lesser to centre ones, as it requires. *Red color pin-wheel will be highlighting colour. *Sound of rustling of pin-wheel cloth will be intrest point to hear.
