Using her signature youthful wit and drawing ideas from an almost endless tapestry of childhood memories, Sara Phillips creates a collection that expresses a modern yet a slightly unconventional take on feminism. Each seasonal offering is drawn together with several common threads including print, soft tailoring and luxurious fabrications- soft suede’s feather detailing and hand drawn prints often features in her work, which helps to build a loyal fan base. Sara Philips rejects the exiting trends and creates a new romanticism for the modern and free spirited woman.

The Siddi saiyyed jali was an inspiration for design for the print design because of its beautifully carved floral motifs and intricate design, Each design narrated own story. The precisely carved birds, leaves, buds, flowers, trees and the curved lines give a feminine feel to jali. The jail is not carved in symmetric patterns but it balances the amount of light beautifully when sun passed through it and creates beautiful patterns. The negative and the positive spaces in the jali make it perfect for the print concept.

The Sidi Saiyyed Mosque built in 1573 is one of the most famous mosques of Ahmedabad As attested by the marble stone tablet fixed on the wall of the mosque, it was built by Sidi Saeed or Sidi Saiyyed. The two bays flanking the central aisle have reticulated stone slabs carved in designs of intertwined trees and foliage and a palm motif. This intricately carved lattice stone window is the Sidi Saiyyed Jali, the unofficial symbol of the city of Ahmedabad and it is also the inspiration for the design of the logo of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad.

The best way to find variations and compositions in the jali is to draw the jali. It has a centre spine like tree overlapping a coconut tree. The branches move around and overlap each other. The leaves, buds and flowers are arranged in such a manner that there is no symmetry in any area.

For developing a screen it is important to derive a simple design from the intricate design of the jali. While selecting the design motif, it should be in mind that the design must have all the significance of the jali.

We can get a good composition by filling the negative spaces in the jali and it becomes easier to analyse the designs at a high contrast.

These explorations have been created by the spray technique. The grains of stones and aging of jali suggests spray painting. Spray technique balances the feel of sidi saiyad jali in printing. 1.

If we look through the jali, we see many colours due to the surrounding trees and the activities happening around the mosque.

*The first has accent colours in some parts of the explorations. *The second image has a monochrome effect. *The third image has colours filled in the positive space to give it a lively feel.

The following explorations are a combination of the negative and positive explorations of the jali put together. The first image has a black and white combination of the negative and positive spaces. The second image has a coloured motif on a blurred background. The third image has a defined coloured contour. The fourth image is the previous image on a black background to see the colors more clearly. 13.

Every unit of the large composition has the potential for a print design in itself. The following explorations have used the same concept to develop new print patterns
