Dr Avinash Verma conferred an honorary degree a doctor honoris causa By: Prof. Surinder Shaun Kochhar LPN, FCN

M

y joy knew no bounds as I was on my way to engage in conversation with Dr. Avinash aka Avi Verma, promoter and Chairman of NMEC [North Shore Medical Education Center, Chicago, USA], who has been conferred upon an Honorary Doctorate by the Avalon University School of Medicine, one of the prestigious University in the Caribbean Islands. This was for his notable contribution in his field of medical education. As I was rummaging through the crisp information about Dr. Verma beforehand, I was excited to walk the talk and share his happiness on this maiden lifetime achievement. After I settled for a spirited interaction, Dr. Verma informed that he landed in USA three decades ago for a better quality of life. He felt that the best way to predict his future is to create it. Back home in India, born to a renowned educationist family of Principal B R Verma, he proved to be a chip of the old block. Like his reverend father and by dint of hard work, Dr. Verma began his professional career as an income tax lawyer in 1976 in India. His hardworking nature, coupled with his strong ethical behavior, made him one of the most sought after lawyers in Punjab. Without wasting time, Dr. Verma kept on studying along with work and in 1991, found his niche in the finance business. After working for a small finance company, he ventured to open his own finance company. With hard work, honesty, dedication and courteous personal service he was extremely successful. For almost fifteen years Dr. Verma dedicated himself to bringing in honest and high

quality financial services to his customers. It was his incurably optimistic thought process and a fair, firm, and flexible approach that helped him to find his moorings in time in USA. His present flagship company NMEC’s mission statement is to help offshore medical students, with South Asian diaspora in particular, to get placed in various Universities to escalate up the rung further to complete their medical education, so they are better equipped to compete for Residency spots in North America in toto. Within seven years, North Shore Medical Education has shown prosperity and growth, both in the quality of rotations, and the relationships with its partners. The company has shown continuous efforts to increase the quality of clinical rotations for Caribbean Medical Schools, and to give the students the better opportunity to receive residency in the US. With his indulgent guidance, the company has grown into the leading clinical rotation provider in the USA. Constancy to purpose and honesty of commitment, combined with exuberant youth as his only asset and an ever supporting better-half, this humble devotee of Maa Jagdambe, went full throttle on Mission Possible, with a meager amount in his pocket and dreams in plenty. “Like for every immigrant, it was a difficult game to be fought and won and that too on a foreign land with no expert guidance,” he hastened to add. During my confabulations- as he reminisced deep into his past - I found him lost in his good vis-à-vis bad moments of struggle and suddenly bounced back to join me with a firm tone exhibiting Mission Accomplished. Yeah, success favored a prepared mind. To help one is what everybody to assure one’s survival. Then what is unique about this humble personality who believes in a re-tailored adage: “God helps those who help others”. Being a fervent devotee of Maa Jagdambe, he is blessed with a

profession which is his passion as well - Helping Others. He further added that now is the time to pay back to the society and thereby help emerging medical students to pursue their dreams. All these aspiring young medical students need is a little help, guidance, hope and SOMEONE TO BELIEVE IN THEM. Since he is singing from the same song sheet, students are getting well connected. Last year, Dr. Verma, along with his sons Dr. Ashish Ansal and Ankush Ansal, launched a new service to the patients in India to consult a Physician in USA for their medical issues via android and iphone app SUPERFYT. Superfyt.com. By dint of hard work his children also kept his dream alive as one of his sons is a Physician while others are successful in their own right. “Hands that help are far greater than the lips that pray”, said Mother Teresa. But this individual has a rare blend of both. Apart from helping others he recites devotional songs of Maa Jagdambe penned by him and promotes such other artists from Indian diaspora. He is an amateur singer of devotional songs with over 6 albums under his belt. In 2003 he launched a not for profit Devotional TV show JAGRAN TV to cater to the long awaited devotional needs of Indian Community, unable to go to the temples due to lack of resources and time, being new. The event was well covered by local print media viz. Chicago Tribune. Dr. Verma is a well known devotee of Maa Durga in USA. He holds and performs Maa Durga Jagran and Chowkis on regular basis at no charge. He has released many Mata Bhajan audio and video CD’s, which can be viewed on his channel Jagran Tv Chicago on you tube Numerous, not-for-profit organizations that Dr. Verma is a part of, aim to provide resources to underprivileged areas around the world. There is a woman behind every successful man, as they say, and in this case, it appears his spouse Mrs. Neelam Verma, motivated him in various shades of the difficult game called LIFE, and played her role very well. Really, God helps those who help others. Hopefully, God blesses him with good health and eventfulness in the years to come.

Celebrating graduation

P

ost-Graduation is getting a diploma or an academic degree or the ceremony that is sometimes associated, in which students become Post graduates. Before the graduation, candidates are referred to as graduands. The date of graduation is often called graduation day. The graduation ceremony itself is also called commencement, convocation. It is the time to celebrate achievements and success. In Canada, the term is increasingly being used to refer to the advancement from a primary or secondary school level. When ceremonies are associated, they usually include a procession of the academic staff and candidates and a valediction. At the college and university level, the faculty will usually wear an academic dress at the formal

ceremonies, as will the trustees and degree candidates.A graduation ceremony is an event where the commencement speaker tells thousands of students dressed in identical caps and gowns that ‘individuality’ is the key to success. “Graduation” at the college and university level occurs when the presiding officer confers degrees upon candidates, either individually or en masse, even if graduates physically receive their diploma later at a smaller college or departmental ceremony. After degree completion, graduates can be referred to by their graduating year. In some places, graduation parties to celebrate graduation from school, college or university are popular.

B C SIKH COMMUNITY

ROLLS IN OVER MILLION DOLLARS OF GOODS FOR FORT McMURRAY WILD FIRE EVACUEES

Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC

T

he Sikh Community in Canada had strong roots and functional operative, if there is any need. The Principles are ingrained in three Basic doctrines: 4 Honest Earning. ( Kirat Karo ) 4 Constant Sate of Meditative Awareness ( NAAM Japo ) 4 Sharing with others ( Vand CHAKNA ) We all saw the devastating wild fire which engulfed a thriving city of our neighbouring province Alberta,we all saw the horror Images on TV & other News outlets. It was shocking. By May 3 Rd the City of Fort McMurray was on emergency alert where over 90,000 people were evacuated by a very coordinated day/night effort by the Fire Fighters, Polices,Paramedics & other Volunteers . They were brought to safety in Edmonton while there houses, valuables, and other daily needs items were engulfed by this Mammoth Fire. The B C Sikh Community activist and humanitarian folks started a momentum the same day to help these brothers & sisters of us with young children & babies. The community from Greater Vancouver through Surrey Delta, Abbotsford & till Mission joined hand to make this a grand Success. We talked & met to coordinate this helping gesture. The first phase was collection of canned food, baby Food, diapers, daily needs items. This was executed with super success from May 6 through 8 where all the Gurdwaras,Schools,Business etc participated. We initially aimed for one truck but with so much passion

to help we were able to roll out 3 big 53 feet trailer on May 9 to Edmonton Emergency Relief Services,( EERS), all the truckers provided free service. Our Coordinatior ‘Avtar Singh Gill’ also went to Edmonton to do the needs assessment. We saw that they were receiving canned food from other services or groups but were devoid of clothes, undergarments, daily bathroom needs etc. This gave birth to phase 2 which was new Clothes, shoes, socks, toys, laundry detergent ,toilet needs products, pillows, blankets, pillow covers, yoga mats, jackets etc. This was conducted as one day event on 14 May at three locations. In Surrey at the Tamanawis High School at 1260066 Ave. In Vancouver at the Khalsa Dewan Society Ross Street Gurudwara. In Abbotsford at all the three Gurudwaras . The truck number 4 with pillows, blankets & undergarments was actually sent on 12 th May because of calls from EERS of acute shortage of these items. Five trucks with Brand new items were sent on May 15 to EERS. Phase 3 was executed on May 20, when 10 dedicated Volunteers left from Surrey to Edmonton to work with EERS daily for one week,we arranged their transport, food&accommodation. The Community rose to this occasion with volunteers from preschool age to as old as 80 years. It was a collective work where the donors, volunteers,Tony Singh’s generosity from Fruiticana to open his warehouse day & night for us to use to dispatch 9 trucks and of course the truckers and trucking companies who provided free Services. This act of selfless service was done by body, mind & money ( Tan,Maan,Dhan ). If we do a conservative estimate we would be easily over a million dollar mark in brand new products sent to our fellow human beings in need. “ Vich Duniya Sev Kamaiyaea taa Dargeh Baisen Payiyae “

Ravi Shastri portrayed in ‘Azhar’as a womaniser

J

ust after a week of the release of the movie number of people miffed with their portrayal in ‘Azhar’ just seems to be growing longer. After Sangeeta Bijlani expressed concerns over her representation in the film starring Emraan Hashmi, Prachi Desai and Nargis Fakhri, and Manoj Prabhakar threatened to take legal action, the latest person to be upset is former cricketer Ravi Shastri , who has been shown cheating on his wife in the film. It is said that Shastri is dismayed at being depicted as a womaniser and even gone ahead and expressed his displeasure to the cricket authorities in the country. A scene in the film shows him canoodling with another

woman in a hotel room while his wife is at the same hotel looking for him. Shastri’s family is also said to be shocked by his portrayal in the film. Back when the sting operation had taken place, Shastri had said a number of things against Mohammed Azharuddin. And sources say that this is Azhar’s way of retaliating.

ou cannot survive in summer without air conditioner. There are many health problems associated with the air conditioner which are small significant. Constant exposure to air trapped in a room which lead to the problem of headaches, eye irritation, throat, dizziness and skin allergies. Walking out of air conditioned room into a heat and vice –versa can trigger respiratory allergies. There are certain ways to avoid such health issues: • Hydrate yourself – Air – conditioners absorb moisture in the air, leading to dry skin. So always drink lots of water. So prefer to drink lukewarm water with slice of lemon that hydrates the body and gently detoxifies it. • Service your Air-conditioner on regular basis – Always ensures to filter and ducts should be clean to eliminate dust, mould, viral or bacterial emulsions. • Moisturise your skin – Use an aloe vera gel and try the herb guduchi which is good for the skin, liver and burning sensation associated with a urinary tract infection. • Refresh your room: Spray each air-conditioned room once a day with herbal oil essence to cleanse odours in closed rooms and or you can also use air purifiers. • Building your immunity –

Prefer to eat Amla Chutney for enzymes and Vitamin C and watermelon for its minerals. • Fill your room with oxygen giving plants – There is no better air purifier than this for an airconditioner room in which air gets stale and low on oxygen. • Get moving - Air – Conditioning seems to turn us into couch potatoes. Exercise regularly to get circulation up and reducing the muscle stiffness. • Avoid sudden changes of temperature – Do not drink chilled water immediately after coming indoors or you’ll a cold. Set your AC to 25 rather than 18 degrees so that difference indoor cool and outdoor heat is not extreme. • Keep your air-conditioner on a mild setting – The high cool setting can cause your muscles to seize up and cramp. Rotate your ankle in every 15 to 20 minutes.

HAPPINESS IS IN OUR HORMONES By: Prof. Surinder Shaun Kochhar LPN, FCN

S

uccess is not the key to Happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be happy. So make your passion your profession as success loves the company of a prepared and a happy mind. Does our happiness depend on our wisdom all together? My answer is, Yes. Various hormones [Neurotransmitters or Neurochemicals], in our body, hold the key to happiness to a great extent. I am sure our knowledge about the neurochemicals, inside our body, linked to happiness is pretty limited. A neurotransmitter is a chemical that is released from a nerve cell which thereby transmits an impulse to another nerve cell contained in a muscle or organ. A neurotransmitter is a messenger of neurologic information from one cell to another. People can be unhappy or feel distressed, experience episodes of anxiety anddepression in patches. Continue reading, to find out how you can help yourself on a way towards happiness. Only you have the cure for your unhappiness and your doctor can help, show the path. Let us discuss our Happy Hormones/Chemicals: There are four neurochemicals in our brain responsible for feelings of happiness. Each one exists, ultimately, for biological reasons that have historically enabled us to survive.Experts say we can control their flow simply by knowing which behaviours trigger their release in the brain.

1 Dopamine

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter released by the brain that plays a number of roles in humans and other animals. Some of its notable functions are balancing mood, sleep movement, memory, attention, learning, behavior and cognition. Dopamine helps control the brain’s reward and pleasure centers. We feel pleasure at this level when we have a hard drink or eat a sweet dish. It’s this neurotransmitter that alerts us to our needs, and then gives us pleasure when we’re able to meet them. By nature, when dopamine is released in our brain, we start craving for that particular food/event. These “needs” are defined by our biology, upbringing and environment. As dopamine is what causes us to strive and achieve, if it’slevel is low, thennegative behaviour starts developing i.e procrastination, self-doubt and apathy. Bottomline: Spending just 10 minutes per day working toward a big, overwhelming goal, will boost dopamine levels in a sustainable way and motivate you to achieve what might have otherwise seemed unachievable. Break your goals into small steps and then achieve them to boost the dopamine levels. One does not need too much to release dopamine and in fact, relying on reaching high-level goals will leave you with a pattern of emotional highs and

Make your passion, your profession and you will feel pleasurably happy at a dopamine level because reward brings pleasure lows. If a Radio Jockey has done well on his 30 min program on Air, it may be more than enough to boost the dopamine to a required level. The only condition is the RJ has to have a passion for doing this pious job. Make your passion, your profession and you will feel pleasurably happy at a dopamine level because reward brings pleasure To boost dopamine :Eat. foods rich in tyrosine: almonds, avocados, bananas, low fat dairy, tofu, fish, poultry, red meat[once a meat, sesame, pumpkin seeds] Get plenty of sleep. One of the best ways to feel energized and ready to tackle the day is to get plenty of sleep. Dopamine has been tied to feelings of wakefulness, so in order to get that wakeful feeling, get 7 to 8 hour of sleep a night. But not less than 6 hrs in any case. If a seniors is not getting sleep lay in the bed in a sleeping mood towards partial benefit. Soboosting dopamine levels in a sustainable way motivate you to achieve what might have otherwise seemed unachievable.

2 Serotonin

Next up is serotonin. It is now well known for its role in the brain where it plays a major part in mood, anxiety and happiness. Illicit mood-altering drugs such as Ecstasy and LSD cause a massive rise in serotonin levels with deadly side effects.. Serotonin is mostly triggered by the dignity and respect you feel you’re receiving from others. If you don’t feel important, the result is anxiety/depressed mood. When people in your life-obviously you’ve had some influence- follow your example that triggers the flow of serotonin in us. If a Physician recommends a therapy ona Radio station and some listeners follow it, when the Physician happens to learn about that, it will trigger an extra dose of

serotonin in the brain of that Physician and give pleasure to him. This is the reason why people like praise and sycophants always have a scope to manipulate. Reminiscing [remembering good times in the past], also help in releasing more serotonin. This is the reason why fathers/grandfathers feel pleasure by telling their success stories of youth to next generation and repeat themtoo. Doing this regularly rewire your brain to trigger serotonin release. So focus on the positive and keep on doing a good job and gather as much praise as possible. You need it very badly. Let us consider the other side. If you’re feeling demoralized at work and you are in a supervisory position, then take a moment to consider the big picture for improvement. Respect should not be demanded, it should be commanded and commanded by encouraging peers, and others led by professionalism.. Those who are not happy at work can carry low levels of serotonin and experience good-for-bad-health anxiety. Anxiety, if untreated, leads to depression. Unfortunately, people at your work and around , hesitate to praise and in a tearing hurry to express jealousy, displeasure and what not.. Clumsy gestures or a tight face does more harm than words. A good atmosphere at work is a panacea for happiness. In Canada, Depression is one of theleading diseases today. Low levels of Serotonin play a major part in mood, and happiness. It is thought that serotonin can affect mood and social behavior, appetite and digestion, sleep, memory and sexual desire etc. Bottomline All you need is positivity, regular exercise [works as an anti-depressant] and 20 minutes of daily sunshine [before 10.00am and after 3.00pm to avoid the effect of ultra violet rays].for skin to produce vitamin D3 [cholecalciferol]. Deficiency of vitamin D3 results in depression. In Canada , since sun is hardly out for 100 days a year, we need to resort to vitamin D3 [1,000 to 2,000 ]IU a day. Using D1 and D2 is a waste of money. Vitamin D3 is the only vitamin the body can manufacture from sunlight (UVB). Consumption of eggs, cheese[preferably cottage, low calorie],pineapples, tofu, salmon, nuts, seeds, turkey helps in improving serotonin levels.

3 Oxytocin

Oxytocin is called a cuddle hormone also. Social Bonding, Trust and Intimacy helps maintain it. You can get it through something as simple as a hug, and you can give it through something as simple as a small gift. That is why we give small gifts to persons in our close circle on auspicious days. Please turn Page Honouring a commitment, big or small, can trigger oxytocin. Do not flake on plans. taste. Tell the concerned person, in advance, if there is a change to the meeting time. Another easy way to release oxytocin is to visualise a situation in your life in which, based on trust, a friend calls to confide in you. Tell yourself, “I made this happen”. This thought process calls attention to the oxytocin-inducing receptors in the brain. Oxytocin helps relax and reduce blood pressure and cortisol[involved in weight gain] levels. It has anti-anxiety effects, and stimulates various types of positive social interaction. In addition, it promotes growth, healing and health. A new study says, stress actually can alter our genes, and that can set off a series of reactions that end up interfering with oxytocin – the stress-busting, love, sex and bonding hormone. Bottom line: Meditate at least 10 minutes twice a day (morning and evening), every day, no excuses. Yogic deep breathing does help. A massage, a cuddle-fest or intimacy with your partner is a perfect way to stimulate oxytocin. Namaz, 5 times a day by our Muslim brethren , is an excellent way to promote Oxytocin levels.

4 Endorphins

Endorphins are released to help us overcome pain during and after an injury.Moderate exercise[30 minutesX 5 days a week], laughter and crying [in isolation] are three of the best ways to release endorphins. No need to run a marathon or do risky stuff in a

GYM. Regular moderate workouts are second to none. Do this for 21 days in succession and it will become a part of your daily routine. Brisk morning/ evening walk is helpful while a casual walk restricts the benefit to 20-30%. Bottom line: Join a group/class/gym in order to diversify your routine. You can do at home also

5 Meet Your Unhappy Chemical—Cortisol

When we feel to be in a life threatening position- actual or perceived - a stress hormone Cortisol is released by the adrenal glands. This is reason number one for reckless increases in weight. It interferes with the liver’s working of fat. It is called the unhappy chemical. Cortisol release is our body’s wayof telling us to address the stress. Unlike the brains of most mammals, we can visualise a world that is much better than the one in which we live. This causes us distress, because when we measure our present reality against our perceived one, it results in a cortisol surge. Everyone has its own style of handling distress. Normally, the method to handle stress, the body learns in childhood—whether they’re actually effective in promoting our best interests or not—and it can be difficult to create new pathways in adulthood. In fact, many of the means we have developed for coping with cortisol actually lead to

increased cortisol release in the long run (e.g., reaching for cocktails). Red wine though is a good option up to 2 unitswith food per day. Restrict to less than 21 units a week. A large (250 ml) glass of 12% ABV red wine has about three units of alcohol. Resveratrol in red wine ward off against heart problem in future. We can resort to purple or black color grapes with seedalso to cover resveratrol or supplements are also available. Bottom line: A jog or a visit to GYM fits the bill here. If you do this repeatedly, your brain will actually rewire itself to crave the jog in times of stress instead of the cocktail. For this reason, the book suggests a daily gratitude list to enable better feelings about the present and release happy chemicals. Unfortunately, our body is not designed to flow happy chemicals in our brains as aever flowing stream. The very nature of how they’re triggered means they’ll always come and go in spurts. The idea is to control them. Whenever my brain start to go negative (or release cortisol), I’d pick up one of the easier exercises or go for a walk or start reading a book or call a friend. This distraction break the wiring in the brain to activate a small burst of happy chemicals and it always worked for me. Age re-tailored Exercise, Stretching daily[ I do it while taking hot water shower temp 39 degree Celsius

approx..],sharing one good moment with your friends or relatives do help Give yourself a try. You may not be 100% successful every single day. This certainly doesn’t mean that everything we chase WILL bring us happiness. In fact, a big part of our struggle with life is figuring out what makes us happy, and perhaps more importantly, what makes us consistently happy. Happiness depends on one’s wisdom. Knowing how your brain chemistry works is a great tool to see yourself through even the biggest of disappointments, failures and challenges life has to offer. Eat sensibly. Diet high in saturated fat, processed foods stress your body and create imbalance . So indulge in omega 3 salmon, walnut, pecan, fiber- and nutrient-rich dark colored[ have more chlorophyll] veggies, fruit and whole grains and plenty of water. Use organic cold pressed extra virgin olive oil . Do not re-use oil ,already used once for frying. Throw it in the sink as now it has killer trans -fat. Put on your thinking caps. Love your body . Control your mood and attitudes. Eliminate self defeating habits. Hold unhappiness by the collar and unhorse it from your mind. Master the skill to balance your happy harmones. Directors: Joe Russo, Anthony Russo Box office: 942.9 million USD Adapted from: Civil War There is a death-defying action sequences, charismatic additional superheroes, and emotional character development, this Captain America threequel is both intense and entertaining. There is a political pressure mounts for installation of system of accountability after watching the actions of Avengers that results into a collateral damage. The new status quo deeply makes a division of members of a team. Captain America (Chris Evans) believes superheroes should remain free to defend humanity without government interference. About the characters of the movie Captain America: Civil War proves to be the best Marvel Studios movie yet. There, we said it. First, and most importantly, it does what the best Marvel films do: juggling multiple characters so each is allowed its moment in a story that pushes forward the series’ overall continuity, while also forming and concluding its own cogent plot. So here Scarlet Witch (Elisabeth

/saentertainmentnewsmagazine

Captain America Olsen) wrestles with the consequences of her immense power; Vision (Paul Bettany) starts getting to grips with being ‘human’; Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) finds herself torn when the battle line is drawn; and supposed retiree Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) just can’t stay out of the fight. Storyline of the movie The Russo Brothers certainly know what they’re doing. They once again prove that it’s Captain America who’s the Avengers’

emotional core, with his immovable sense of loyalty and responsibility. It’s unnecessary to choose sides, because -- as reasonable as Tony might seem when he goes on about the need of government oversight and accountability -- this is obviously Cap’s movie, and therefore his is the more compelling argument. Evans goes through the entire emotional range as he deals with his complicated feelings for former-best-friend-turnedrobotic-killer Bucky, as well as the knowledge that Tony believes he’s betraying him and the grief of an unexpected but unsurprising death. As for the new additions, Boseman and Holland are fabulous as the Black Panther (the closest thing the Marvel

@ansalmedia

universe has to Batman) and SpiderMan respectively. Peter Parker is for once played by an actual teen -- funny, nerdy, and in awe of his much more experienced fellow superheroes. In the big “civil war” fight scene, Peter prattles on, asking questions about everyone’s suits and shield and abilities in a hilarious manner. Meanwhile, Boseman is cool and fierce, believably a prince and a protector at the same time. There are small touches that reveal the deep bonds between this crew, like when Vision sweetly tells Wanda that he wants the world to see her as he does, not as a threat, or when Natasha asks Clint (Jeremy Renner), “we’re still friends right?” We all know, no matter what side they might take in a particular argument, they’re clearly still besties. Marvel might be churning these movies out at an incredible pace, but the quality and the depth in the Captain America movies in particular shows what’s best about this superhero saga. Matching its blockbuster scale and spectacle with the smarts of a great, grown-up thriller, Captain America: Civil War is Marvel Studios’ finest film yet.

SRK threw a lavish dinner in honour of Tim Cook at his palatial house Mannat in Mumbai on 18th May. While Tim Cook has already reached King Khan’s royal pad, the former is said to be very impressed with the hospitality and of course SRK’s gorgeous bungalow. GASTRO ESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE ( GERD ) Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji

G

MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC

ERD occurs when stomach acid or, occasionally, stomach content, flows back into your food pipe (esophagus). The backwash (reflux) irritates the lining of your esophagus and causes GERD. Both acid reflux and heartburn are common digestive conditions that many people experience from time to time. When these signs and symptoms occur at least twice each week or interfere with your daily life, or when your doctor can see damage to your esophagus, you may be diagnosed with GERD. Most people can manage the discomfort of GERD with lifestyle changes and over-the-counter medications. But some people with GERD may need stronger medication GERD SYMPTOMS A burning sensation in your chest (heartburn), sometimes spreading to your throat, along with a sour taste in your mouth 4Chest pain 4Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) 4Dry cough 4Hoarseness or sore throat

4Regurgitation of food 4Lump in throat Multimedi GERD is caused by frequent acid reflux — the backup of stomach acid or bile into the esophagus. When you swallow, the lower esophageal sphincter — a circular band of muscle around the bottom part of your esophagus — relaxes to allow food and liquid to flow down into your stomach. Then it closes again. However, if this valve relaxes abnormally or weakens, stomach acid can flow back up into your esophagus, causing frequent heartburn. Sometimes this can disrupt your daily life. This constant backwash of acid can irritate the lining of your esophagus, causing it to become inflamed (esophagitis). Over time, the inflammation can wear away the esophageal lining, causing complications such as bleeding,

esophageal narrowing Conditions that can increase your risk of GERD include: Obesity 4 Bulging of top of stomach up into the diaphragm (hiatal hernia) 4Pregnancy 4Smoking 4Dry mouth 4Asthma 4Diabetes 4Delayed stomach emptying 4Connective tissue disorders COMPLICATIONS Over time, chronic inflammation in your esophagus can lead to complications, including: Narrowing of the esophagus (esophageal stricture). Damage to cells in the lower esophagus from acid exposure leads to formation of scar tissue. The scar tissue narrows the food pathway, causing difficulty swallowing. An open sore in the esophagus

(esophageal ulcer).Stomach acid can severely erode tissues in the esophagus, causing an open sore to form. The esophageal ulcer may bleed, cause pain and make swallowing difficult. Precancerous changes to the esophagus (Barrett’s esophagus). In Barrett’s esophagus, the tissue lining the lower esophagus changes. These changes are associated with an increased risk of esophageal cancer. The risk of cancer is low, but your doctor will likely recommend regular endoscopy exams DIAGNOSIS Multimed Your symptoms. Your doctor may be able to diagnose GERD based on frequent heartburn and other symptoms.

HOW TO HAVE HEALTHY AND LONG HAIR H

airs make every woman look beautiful so every girl has a dream of keeping long, healthy and shiny hair. It is possible by using a few tools and products but it can damage your hair. Instead, there are a few natural ways to get beautiful long hair. There is no magical way to grow your hair overnight. All you need is patience as this process takes loads of time. It is a slow process and eventually you’ll notice the change. It is also important to know that everyone’s hair is different and grows at a different speed. Here are some easy tips and tricks to grow your hair:

• Avoid hot tools Try to avoid heat as much as possible. There is nothing worse for your hair than heat. Let your hair dry naturally after washing and limit the use of hot tools. Make sure to apply a heat protection product before using heat. Remember that every time you use heat, some damage is done to your hair.

• Trimming You might have refused to cut your hair just because it will get short and not grow. As your hair gets longer, it’s getting less healthy. Trimming just half an inch every month will reduce chances of split ends. Especially, if your hair is collared, the end is dry and prone to split ends. To get healthy long hair, first you must remove all unhealthy bits. If you have split ends, get a trim because there is no other way to repair split ends.

• Moisturize Once you get rid of all the split ends, use a conditioner after shampoo to prevent split ends in future. Use a deep conditioner once every week. Oils are also good for your scalp and hair. Use any oil treatment to provide your hair with the nourishment it requires. You must start with healthy hair in order to get long hair. Healthy short hair is more beautiful than damaged long hair. • Eat Healthy Unhealthy, weak and limp hair is a sign of poor diet. If your body isn’t getting enough nutrition,

neither is your hair. How you treat your body has an effect on your hair and skin. Remember to include fresh fruits, vegetables and protein in your diet. Drink loads of water. If there is a need, multivitamins are also a great way to get all the necessary vitamins that your body need. • Always make use of wide tooth comb Avoid brushing your hair while it’s wet. You hair is more likely to get damaged when it’s wet. When shampooing, don’t rub the roots because your hair will get weak. Gently, massage your scalp to promote blood circulation. Also, don’t rub towel. Let it air dry. If your hair gets frizzy or tangled when you don’t brush it while its wet then its best to use a wide tooth comb. The best comb for your hair is a wooden comb. Don’t put your hair in styles that can break your hair. Back combing, tight ponytails and tiny braids pull your hair from the roots and make them weak. Remember that styles that pull all your hair and stress the roots are not easy to remove therefore they damage your hair.

HOW TO SAY A PERFECT APOLOGY There is a way to bounce back after a massive mistake, experts say. Fess up, be sincere, and do it quickly.

A

ll of us make mistakes. In the process, our feelings are hurt. We hurt others too. However, it’s important to move on.What is the solution?Offer an apology when we are caught on the wrong foot and accept an apology when others do wrong to us. Quality of an apology The quality and effectiveness of an apology is determined by: expression of remorse, acceptance of responsibility, and an offer of repair. During our private and public dealings, we keep on giving, receiving, or demanding apologies, yet we rarely make clear what we expect from such a gesture of contrition or what lesson we have learned. Some people use apology as an EXIT Door. Their apologies come from their mind and not from the cockles of their heart. I once asked a Cell Phone company employee, on phone, how many times heapologises to his company clients, like me, in one shift? “Maybe 20-25 times”,pat came the reply with giggles as a freebie. Bank officials also, on occasions, use apology as an exit door. But if we make a minor mistake, we are slapped with financial penalties. Bosses also play the same game, when they are caught on the wrong foot.If an apology is not from the heart and without remorse, it is foolery. Those who carry a huge ego, hate to say sorry from their heart and keep on repeating offending behaviour in public or private. Some folks are utterly remorseful and regret their offenses. Some make a mountain out of a mole. Many people are sharp tongued. These create a tempest in a

news magazine

teapot.Every one is blaming few others. Timing is everything. Generally speaking, an immediate apology is more effective than a late one. Many people while tendering a sincere apology include the an explanation. In case it carries acknowledgement of harm caused, and the admission of wrong-doing it is a perfect apology. The apology discussion time should be to the point. We cannot change our family members, colleagues and even very dear trustworthy friends. Therefore, a sincereheart-felt apology is the solution. We have to ensure that our apologies are regarded as sincere rather than vague and clumsy or spiteful? To the point apologies are much more effective at promoting reconciliation and decreasing anger and blame towards the mistake-maker because they are judged by victims as being more sincere. An unscripted apology is most effective, when it is conveyed early and quickly. It looks more believable and genuine and thereby soothes the hurt inflicted knowingly or unknowingly.Sometimes an apology is

weak, especially for a major mistake, if there is no expression of remorse, no acceptance of responsibility, and no offer of repair in it. If acknowledgement of harm and admission of wrongdoing is there, then for those reasons this apology is OK. One should use emotional intelligence to offer an apology. Most people want to maintain their selfworth and integrity. Hurting others, especially in such a personal and gratuitous way, can threaten our selfperception that we’re good and appropriate. Further, an admission of fault, acknowledging that he’s hurt others, and seeking forgiveness work like a soothing balm on the bruised dignity and respect. We should not justify our bad behaviour. We should be ever ready to forgive others particularly in the light of the fact that we also make mistakes. Some people do try to play smart. They manipulate apology and befool others. An apology coming very late is fraught with the risk that it is not fair. Those who carry a huge ego and threaten people with their bad behaviour continuously can be remorseless in their apology. No matter however bad your situation is, just say heart felt sorry and it relieves you from the pressure cooker situation. Try it. Be at ease with yourself.

If an apology is not from the heart and without remorse, it is foolery

Travelling to Thailand: Stunning beaches, sophisticated cuisine and Buddhist culture!

A

round 16 million foreigners flying to Thailand each year, as it come under the category of Asia’s primary level of destination. It offers a host of places to visit despite of vast influx of visitors. Thailand boasted the fastestexpanding economy in the world. Temples to visit in the Bangkok: Within its historic core you’ll find resplendent temples, canalside markets and the opulent indulgence of the eighteenth-century Grand Palace, while downtown’s forest of skyscrapers shelters cutting-edge fashion and decor boutiques and some achingly hip bars and clubs. Explore Pattaya: After touchdown in Bangkok, much of the packageholiday traffic flows east to Pattaya, the country’s seediest resort, but for prettier beaches you’re better off venturing just a little further, to the islands of Ko Samet and the Ko Chang archipelago, with their squeaky white sand and shorefront bungalows. Another place to visit in Bangkok is Isaan, the poorest and in some ways the most traditionally Thai region. Here, a trip through the gently modulating landscapes of the Mekong River valley, which defines Thailand’s northeastern extremities, takes in archetypal agricultural

villages and a fascinating array of religious sites, while the southern reaches of Isaan hold some of Thailand’s best-kept secrets – the magnificent stone temple complexes of Phimai, Phanom Rung and Khao Phra Viharn, all built by the Khmers of Cambodia almost ten centuries ago. Closer to the capital, Khao Yai National Park encapsulates the phenomenal diversity of Thailand’s flora and fauna, which here range from wild orchids to strangling figs, elephants to hornbills. At the heart of the northern uplands, Chiang Mai is both an attractive historic city and a vibrant cultural centre, with a strong tradition of arts, crafts and festivals. It does a burgeoning line in self-improvement courses – from ascetic meditation to the more earthly pleasures of Thai cookery classes – while the overriding enticement of the surrounding region is the prospect of trekking through villages inhabited by a

richly mixed population of tribal peoples. Plenty of outdoor activities and courses, as well as hot springs and massages, can be enjoyed at Pai, a surprisingly cosmopolitan hill station for travellers, four hours northwest of Chiang Mai.Sand and sea are what most Thai holidays are about, though, and the pick of the coasts are in southern Thailand, where the Samui archipelago off the Gulf coast is one of the highlights. Ko Samui itself has the most sweeping white-sand beaches, and the greatest variety of accommodation and facilities to go with them. Ko Pha Ngan next door is still largely backpacker territory, where you have a stark choice between desolate coves and Hat Rin, Thailand’s party capital. The remotest island, rocky Ko Tao, is

acquiring increasing sophistication as Southeast Asia’s largest divetraining centre. Thailand is a country on Southeast Asia’s Indochina peninsula known for tropical beaches, opulent royal palaces, ancient ruins and ornate temples displaying figures of Buddha, a revered symbol. In Bangkok, the capital, an ultramodern cityscape rises next to quiet canal and riverside communities. Commercial hubs such as Chinatown consist of labyrinthine alleys crammed with shophouses, markets and dinners. Friendly and fun loving, exotic and tropical, cultured and historic, Thailand radiates a golden hue from its glittering temples and tropical beaches through to the evercomforting Thai smile!

Jagga Jasoos will be along the lines of “Sherlock Holmes-meetsJames Bond-meets-Mission Impossible. Jagga Jasoos tells the story of a teenage detective in search of his missing father. It will have all the elements needed in a typical Bollywood masala film with music, comedy and some action.

Actress Katrina Kaif underwent training in martial arts for her role in the film, supplementing the martial arts she had previously learned for Ek Tha Tiger. By 20 March 2014, the director had completed 20 days of filming with his leads and, being unhappy with initial efforts by actor Ranbir Kapoor intends to use the additional schedule time to re-shoot some scenes. Songs of the movie have been composed by Pritam. The film is said to be a Musical and will have a lot of songs. There were reports that the film will have as many as 20 songs but Pritam said he is still unsure about the final count and that it was the most difficult movie he has ever worked on. Ranbir Kapoor will be seen singing most of his dialogues rather than say them. The film was originally going to release on 27 November 2015, but due to conflicting commitments by the lead actors, the film’s release date has been pushed to August 2016.

Importance of Feng Shui Home Decor W

hat is feng shui? A belief or pure science? Some say it’s a science while some say it’s just a mere belief. Well, I think it’s both, now take an example of a doctor, before visiting any doctor you need to believe in him or else how will you follow his guidelines. Coming back to feng shui, the basic problem is that we have no idea exactly what kind of science it is and honestly it is much deep-rooted than we think. Perhaps now we all know that feng shui is a kind of process that entirely affects your surroundings, and many homeowners think of buying these kinds of products.

Tip 1: Make your mouth delightful: The entrance gate is more entrancing in order to attract all good opportunities and besides, it makes you so inspiring and fresh once you enter your space. From a fresh doormat to colorful pots of flowers, newly placed bulbs, etc can be done to enhance your entrance. Tip 2: Place your furnishings properly: Feng shui home decor always emphasizes on placing the living room furnishings in such a way that you can easily see the entrance exactly from where you are sitting or lying but make sure it’s not in the direct alignment. Apart from this get rid of those products where you can easily bump your head on or stub your toe as they are unsafe for you and your loved ones. Tip 3: Keeping Living areas clean and de-cluttered We all are indirectly connected with the things that we own, so having lots and lots of stuff is not good. Always keep this in mind your home is the metaphor of your life, so keep your lives clean by keeping your living areas clean and decluttered. Tip 4: Buy always Feng Shui crystals or Himalayan salt crystals You can think of buying those rare feng shui crystals or Himalayan salt crystal lamps or bookends made from crystal and place them near your living area or home entrance, outside or inside, etc. Tip 5: Re-arrangement of bed room space While re-arranging your bedroom space, always remember that bedrooms are passive in nature while office areas have to be active. So always make sure to keep your bedroom areas more relaxing that provides you a good night sleep. So this is it! These are some of the basic tips to consider while executing home decor.

Some fashion tips for women to dress up in summer!

S

ummer is a very challenging season for dressing up for women. You need to reveal more about yourself and your body with few layering tricks at your disposal to either covering up certain parts or creating a nice silhouette. It is very hard to create a new look every day since in summer you can’t make use of jacket layers and scarves. There are some tips below that will help every woman in dressing up perfectly in summer. • Always make use of interesting design details If you are wearing only one layer, then make it look interesting as it is possible for you. Choose tops with an interesting design details such as red silk top which is airy and interesting from the back. All you need is good basic bottom that includes nice white trousers and skirt which will look modern, polished and yet remain cool. • Dress in very thin layers When you go to the beach then prefer to cover up rather than expose all my upper skin to the sun. Prefer to wear always few very thin blouses or tunics. It doesn’t matter if they are see-through because you will be wearing it with either your bikini or singlet underneath. You can also try the combination of either shorts or a long skirt if you like to cover up your legs as well. • Always hide the bra straps If you are wearing a unique top, make sure that you have a bra that can be worn invisible underneath. You can either buy

a bra that can be worn in several ways or buy a bra clip like this one. This can be used with almost every bra. • Invest in few good dresses always Nothing is as easy and glamorous and cool as a good summer dress. Ideally you will have at least 4 dresses: Summer day dress – It is perfect dresses for casual get-together during the day. It could be a nice wrap dress in Cotton jersey or casual shift dress. Work Dress- It is a kind of traditional shift dress which looks both professional and conservative and can easily be wearing with a combination of cardigan and jacket. High summer beach dress – This dress can either be short in length as compare to your other dresses and very easy to wash. A good example is my white cotton dress although it could also be a simple dress with spaghetti straps. Perfect for the beach but can also be used as a tunic worn over pants for casual clothes. Dress to wear in evening - This dress is a bit more special than your day and work dress. Silk would be preferred material for a special dress in summer and ideally it’s asymmetrical too. • Not to afraid of silk With good quality cotton it is my preferred material for summer. It’s cool, has a beautiful natural shine and it looks and feels sublime. A common complaint is that silk is too precious for summer and that it requires too much care. Yes, it’s more work, but not as expensive as dry cleaning. Although all silk items will always have the ‘dry cleaning’ advice for

washing, I personally don’t believe it’s necessary so long as you purchase silk of good quality. Investing is one special dress that will make you feel wonderful. • Make use of accessories, shoes, color, pattern and graphics to make things more interesting • Play with color blocking. • Add a belt in a print. • Add interest with a brightly colored scarf (for lots of example see how to wear scarves). • Use the scarf itself as a top. • Add color with a bag. • Use a statement necklace. • Get some colourful standout shoes. • When wearing flats make sure it’s a fun and arty one. • Wear sunglasses always when you are out in the day times Sunglasses are the perfect way to cover up your wrinkles and dark circles around the eye for a young and hip look. Use them in abundance in summer, if only to protect your eyes of the sun and harmful rays and have fun with colors and shapes. Follow those tips and make your summer season a fun not a burden!
