MORTGAGE INSURANCE- WHY THROUGH US? Whenever you purchase a home with the help of mortgage, it is always advisable to secure your valuable property in times of any unforeseeable circumstance such as an illness or death so that you or your loved ones are not forced to part with your dream home or, at least are in a secure position to pay off the debts and other financial obligations. Contd. from August edition Discounts for people in good health Mortgage insurance through us grants healthy people lots of discount on the premium. You can use this saved money for any purpose, including fast payment of mortgage but financial institution does not offer this advantage; there is no waiver/discount for people in good health. The premium amount is the ‘standard amount’ for everybody- in good health or ill health. Guarantee for premiums The insurance company guarantees the same amount of premium throughout the period of insurance. But for policy bought through bank/financial institution, there is no guarantee of the amount of premium. It can increase depending upon the claims experience of the insurance provider of the lending institution.

it’s better to buy one traditional insurance policy than purchase a number of small policies for a variety of products.

stage. Consider buying or topping up an individual life insurance policy to cover your mortgage.

Portability of the policy The insurance policy we offer you is portable and remains unaffected in case you Sandeep Ahuja relocate. But this portability is not provided by the financial institution. If you change your lender, the policy is cancelled. Coverage The coverage provided by mortgage insurance doesn’t decline unless you request. Even if you request for a decline in coverage, your premium decreases at a proportional rate. But in case of financial institution, the coverage amount is equal to the mortgage amount. With the gradual decrease of mortgage amount, coverage also decreases leading to a drastic reduction of your benefits, while your premium amount remains the same.

Know your coverage You may already have adequate insurance coverage through your work or other policies. According to insurance experts:

Always ensure first that you need insurance before you buy it. Mortgage insurance is meant to protect your loved ones from making mortgage payments in case of any foreseeable circumstance. It may not be applicable if you do not have any dependents who would need to keep your home in such circumstances. Please come to my office or call me to make an obligation free appointment so that I can tell you more about the hidden facts of the insurance/financial Industry. For further information, contact me at 604-996-6862 or email me at

sandeepahuja@punjabinsurance.ca

Retention of coverage Insurance company allows you to retain your coverage after you pay off your mortgage. On the other hand, coverage obtained in insurance through financial institution terminates after you pay off your mortgage. Protection against the effect of renewal If you purchase mortgage insurance through us; once your policy is approved, you don’t have to face the hassle of renewing it as insurance can be done for a term of 10 years/15 years/20 years/30 years. But again, if you have done it through a bank, after a period of five years, the policy terminates and you have to renew it again, meaning thereby you will need to re-qualify and may eventually end up paying higher premiums. The above comparison makes it evident that buying mortgage insurance through a life insurance company is in every way more beneficial than buying it through financial institutions. However, due to lack of awareness, majority of people still find it convenient to buy it through these institutions, especially when it is being offered along with bank mortgage. Being an Insurance Advisor with considerable experience of the intricacies of this field, I can not only advise you to protect your home with mortgage insurance, but also can show the way to protect and utilize your invested insurance money during times of dire need. Certain points should be kept in mind before you consider buying mortgage insurance: Be sure that you qualify for insurance Mortgage insurance policies involve many terms and exclusions. Understand their meaning and their application. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions; for clarification, always call the insurance company directly (NOT the bank that sold you the coverage). If you have concerns about any pre-existing medical conditions; call your doctor Shop around. It’s better to buy insurance from a licensed insurance broker who will explore any medical issues at the initial

s I walked the talk, he informed me that he is a born Canadian. At the tender age of 14 he started working with his reverend dad in his construction business. To be a successful entrepreneur, he leaned the nuances of business under the guidance of Sr. Jaswant Singh Chahal- who is parenthetically his rev. father also. When asked how he manages a Head Office store in Surrey vis-àvis a Branch Office in Vancouver plus a huge workforce of 84 plus people, he stated, “Set the system and then system sets everything.” Whatever I am today is due to my parents, our partners, our hard working staff and clients in business with us. “My Unique Selling Point (USP) is, I am directly in touch with our clients and tailor made our quality products as per their requirements from time to time. They are more like an extended family to all of us.” When requested to tell his strengths, he quipped, I am straight forward, respectful, honest, do not lie, do not show off and ever ready to lend a helping hand wherever warranted. On hobbies front, apart from socializing, he loves Ball Hockey

He loves to go on long trips and enjoy the company of close friends. When requested to update his activities on philanthropic front, I saw him re-settling in his chair and with a proud straight neck and firm tone he stated, “We are donating liberally for the cause of community help by sponsoring in various community fields viasports, education, cancer eradication, community help, BC Children hospital and Surrey food Bank. On family front, he is blessed with 3 kids; Son Teren 12 yrs., Son Michael 10 yrs. and daughter Jessica 5 years young. When enquired what he thinks of his kids, pat came the reply,” I want them to excel in education as well as sport of

He is fully engaged in helping his kids pursue their passion in Ice hockey. When asked where he visualize himself after 10 years, from business point of view, I found him very crystal clear in mind and in a fraction of a second he stated,” We want the sales to grow 4 times in North America – our area of operation At this point I saw him half lost in plan forecasting of his enterprise and

ith growth of cities we see need for all the basic things such as Education, Health care, Affordable Housing, Safety etc to grow. I have Lived in Surrey for over 20 years, I have seen it grow from a small Municipality to a Mega city. I have some data to share with you. Census data released today by Statistics Canada has revealed that Surrey’s population has surpassed 500,000. As of May 2016 last year, the population of Surrey was 517,887, an increase from 468,251 in 2011 representing a growth rate of 10.6%, outpacing the national average, British Columbia, the City of Vancouver, and the Vancouver CMA.

5.6% 4 City of Vancouver grew by 4.6% 4 Vancouver Census Metropolitan Area (CMA): 6.5% The only Vancouver CMA municipality to grow faster than Surrey was the Township of Langley which grew at a rapid 12.6%. As a whole, the Vancouver CMA grew to 2,463,431. With Surrey adding an average of 1,000 new residents per month, as of February 2017, the population of Surrey can be estimated to have already increased further to 525,000. It is expected that Surrey will surpass Vancouver in population to become the largest city in BC by 2030.

Looking at growth by Census Tract, the areas of Surrey growing the fastest were in the south and east, in places such as Grandview Heights, Sunnyside Heights, South Newton, and Clayton. There was also noticeably strong growth in Surrey City Centre as a result of new condo developments in recent years, with one Census Tract east of King George Blvd and south of 104th Avenue growing by 33%. This growth in City Centre will likely increase even more by the 2021 Census, with more new condo developments expected to be completed within City Centre in the next 5 years than in the previous 5 years. Universal Health care is what

Canada is Unique in providing the highest care in times of Sickness, I admire Surrey Memorial Hospital who has one of the Busiest Emergency in the Nation but it is time for another full hospital as well. Vancover city by itself is only few hundred thousands bigger than Surrey but it has Several Speciality Hospitals . The wait times in ER keeps on going up, the medical Staff works as if they are on a Roller skates, Stress Level goes up. Medical Errors increases in these busy times, After all we are dealing with Human Life. A lot can be improved and medical errors decreased if we will have a Second hospital to share the Load, if you build they will come, I mean the Staffing issues etc. Sometimes I do feel that we are not a priority for Decision makers, After all we are all Contributing to the betterment of our city and are paying Taxes, we are not asking for Free. Look at Vancouver they have 6 full fledged 24 hour hospitals as listed, BC Children’s , BC Women’s, Vancouver General Hospital, St Paul’s Hospital, UBC site Hospital, Mount St Joseph Hospital. In my opinion it is unfair that we are provided with only one hospital facility. We need a Second Hospital Soon preferably near 152 Street and No 10 highway Area. I would Strongly urge the Provincial, Federal and city Elected officials to work on this Collectively, Together we can build the City, the Province and the Nation Strong.

In comparison, between 2011 and 2016: 4 Canada as a whole grew by 5.0% 4 British Columbia grew by

Make your lip colour last

ick the right formula. Swatch test a lipstick before buying. Apply it on your hand, let it dry. Dab an alcohol-based toner on the edge of the swatch. Rub it and see how much it fades. Follow the same with a lotion. This is how you know the formula will not betray you. Don’t apply lipstick on chapped lips. When you apply a matte lipstick on chapped lips, you start picking your lips, because they feel rough. Or you apply lip balm on top. All of these make lipstick peel and come off. Prime your lips by using a hydrating, thick cream as base. Use lip liner. Lip liner might have started out as a product with which one outlines their lips, but off late, it has become very

popular for filling in lips. Extremely pigmented and hard, they are formulated to be a lot more matte than lipsticks and hence, stay on the lips longer. Therefore, a lip liner base, is crucial if you want your lipstick to stay put. Layer. First, apply your lipstick. Then, pat the colour down with your fingers. Now, apply another layer of lipstick. After this, dab a tissue between your lips and dust some powder on the tissue. Follow this with one final coat of lipstick. Eat right. Oil can remove any makeup, however stubborn or transfer-proof. So, eating carefully, and eating the right food, is important. If you are going for a dinner date, or an important meeting which involves food, be careful not to order something very oily. • Starring: Satinder Sartaj, Jason Flemyng, Shabana Azmi, Amanda Root • Classification: PG • Genre: Biopic • Year: 2017 • Country: USA • Language: English After watching this biopic on the life of Maharaja Duleep Singh, (the exiled Maharaja of the Sikh Empire

and the last King of Punjab) one cannot help thinking- in succession- how beautifully all the minor details and controversial history has been awfully addressed. It has a great academic learning experience for those who have a flair for history. Kavi Raz’s immaculate direction of this biopic is indeed laudable. Though some of the artistes are proven thespians namely, Amanda

Root, Jason Flemyng, Shabana Azmi are at their best yet hats off to Kavi to get the best out of the singer-poet Satinder Sartaj who plays the titular would-be ruler, who we first experience as a regally housed but forlorn brandy-drinking, Bible-taught young dandy and favourite of Queen Victoria portrayed excellently by him. The bulk of the film concerns the patriotically awakened Singh’s attempted return to Punjab and the British conspiracy working to prevent his homecoming to a kingdom they they intruded upon bydeceit. On the history front, The Black Prince succeeds, by being appreciated by the class of people for whom

it is being produced. On entertainment front, the film is pedantic, full of -drama, and to cap it all the emphatic sound track. Laconically, what fascinated me was the herculean decision to pick up such a subject where history is not clear on certain parameters and need to do of research. The film has been well received by the diaspora throughout the world for which Kavi and his team deserve a pat on their respective backs. Hats off to the whole team of Kavi Raz for doling out justice in every department. Those who have affair to watch such type of movies are appreciating it.

AZADI CELEBRATION 2017

O

n Monday August 14, 2017, the Pakistani Canadian Cultural Association – women’s wing hosted a dinner for Senator Salma Ataullahjan to celebrate Pakistan’s 70th Independence Anniversary at the Ultimate Banquet Hall in Surrey, BC. The event was beautifully orchestrated, well attended and non-conventional in it’s format. There were no keynote speeches or VIP tables, rather Saima Naz, principal of iLearn DL Secondary School, got on stage with senator Salma Ataullahjan. The two talked like old friends catching up over chai, Ms. Naz asked questions about life, love, parenting and politics and Sentor Salma Ataullahjan answered them with honesty, vulnerability and authenticity. She shared stories from her childhood spent in Pakistan, her struggles as a new immigrant and how she keeps her two daughters connected to their Pakistani roots. “Don’t sweat the small stuff,” says Senator Salma Ataullahjan, “dream as big as you can and then have the courage to make it a reality, I did and so can

you.” The audience also participated, asking questions and sharing personal experiences. There was pin drop silence in hall for an hour and a half as the conversation took place. By the end of the night everyone walked away with their bellies full heart wide open, feeling more connected, motivated and inspired. The Canadian and Pakistani national anthems were sang beautifully by Aliyah Kazmi and Maleeha Ghazanfar. Arooj Qaiser, founder and director of Bloomfield early learning centre and Saima Naz were master of ceremonies for the evening and handled the stage with ease and style. Phillipa Dutt, Miss Fraser Valley World 2017, was in attendance and made a very inspiring speech. Syerish Amit Sondhi and Maleeha mesmerised the audience with their voice and sang all kinds Pakistani songs to keep everyone entertained. A beautiful cultural dress show which highlighted all the provinces of Pakistan was coordinated by the PCCA female directors. The organizations President

Faurkh Syed and Vice President Haroon Qaiser and Talib Hussain joined the ladies for the cake cutting ceremony and helped make the night even more memorable. “Our hope was to celebrate Pakistan’s Independence

How To Build Self - Confidence in Your children On receipt of his first exam result of BSc 1st year at UBC Vancouver, my son felt very sad as he did not get very good marks. When I went back home he was sitting in a drawing room, in near darkness; when I sought facts, he lamented with a choked throat, “I did not score very well”. Then to him I counselled,” you always scored very well. Experience the maiden flavour of not scoring very well. I took him out for a dinner- the same night- in a restaurant and we made his daily study plan there. This raised his self- confidence and he never looked back. We need to support our children during

As I turned sixteen, and on the day of reckoning i.e. on my 16th birthday, when I went to seek blessings from my father- in early morning- he addressed me like this; Happy Birthday my dear friend. When I sought details of using the word “friend” instead of son, he stated, “now you are sixteen; your feet fits well into my shoes, and grown up enough- to apply your mind to decide- what is right or wrong. Now I will treat you like a very close family friend and a fatherly guide. This instilled a lot of self-confidence in me AS I WAS EAGER TO BE TREATED LIKE AN ADULT.”

will help you help him learn to trust himself. This kind of nurturing put the blocks of selfworth in place

A child’s Self-Esteem is acquired, not inherited. Surrounding environment

plays a quintessential role in shaping the self-confidenceof kids. A child learns certain character traits, such as anger and fearfulness. Her parents have a role to play. If they suffer from low self-confidence, that can percolate the same and have a cascading effect on their kids.

Parents can take following steps so that Self-confidence can be instilled in kids in maximum and in time:

• Remember, children like the company of their parents most, when they are happy. So serve as Positive Mirror to your kids • Raise a Confident Child by Playing Together. This sends a message that the child is a valuable person. Encourage the child to initiate the play. Child-initiated play also increases self-worth. My dad used to play the game of Snakes and Ladders with me regularly. This helped me to be at more ease with him, ask questions and be more confident. • Let your child feel he/she is very special: they are the ultimate purpose for parents to live on. • Address Your Child by Name. Addressing your child by name, especially when accompanied by eye contact and touch helps a long way. This makes him feel special. Parents often use a child’s nickname or first name only in a casual dialogue. • To raise a confident child as he gets older, encourage his talents. Help a child play a game of his choice. This will improve his overall performance and self confidence • Guide Your Child to plan, implement and succeed. • Children measure their own value by how they perceive others value them. . If you want to raise a confident child, be sure your child believes you value him because of who he is, not how he performs. Do this by giving him plenty of eye contact, therapeutic touching and focused attention. .He must know that your love for him does not depend on his performance. That’s a tough assignment for a parent indeed. • Screen your child’s friends as one is known or affected by the company one keeps. Persons

of significance in his life are relatives, coaches, teachers, religious leaders and friends. It’s up to the parents to keep an eye on all of this. • Keep thehome kid-friendly, so that the friends of your child can come and spend some time as peers. This improves self confidence in your child. • Monitor the school influence on your child. Because at elementary school, other adults become influential in his life. • Give your children responsibilities. One of the main ways children develop self-confidence and internalize values, is through helping maintain the family living area, inside and out. Raise a confident child by giving them household duties. A child may be requested to tidy up his room, wash a car, gardening or clean his own used dishes. This helps them feel more valuable and channels their energy into desirable behaviour and teaching skills. • Encourage children to express their feelings. Maturity develops through years of learning that lead to a positive attitude. Positive attitude lead to maturity not aging. A child with unbridled emotions becomes a brat. A person who never expresses emotions becomes too reserved. Too much control or too much emoting will both produce problems later in life.in adult life. Parents don’t need a degree in psychology to raise a confident child. Much of parenting is fun and takes it easy. Many parents are already overloaded with guilt because they may not be doing enough to marcher their child’s self-worth. Always remember, children are like a white cloth, whatever color you give or they pick up by default, in their formative years, have nearpermanent hue on them. When we try to give another color, LATER ON, it results into a different - one due to litmus reaction. Inculcate good habits in the children from childhood. My father used to take me to alibrary, in the vicinity, when I was a tween. This is how I developed the passion to read and then write. I owe my writing ability to my late rev. dad. Self-confidence is your child’s passport to a lifetime of goodmental health and overall happiness. It’s the foundation of a child’s well-being and the key to success as an adult. As an Arborist care for a tree, likewise, parents raise a confident child, by nurturing their kids because, parenting is therapeutic. Raise a Confident Child and watch him grow like a great human being.

Why Aamir Khan is not on Forbes list of world’s highest paid actors

B

ollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar are in the top 10 of the Forbes list of highest-paid actors

in the world, which was revealed few days back. But Aamir Khan didn’t make it, despite his last release, Dangal, managing to break the Rs 2,000-crore barrier at the

box office. A Forbes report says Aamir earned Rs 175 crore from Dangal alone, arguably the highest fee for any actor in the world. But still he missed the coveted list. “Mr Khan doesn’t ever get featured in the Forbes list as he doesn’t share, not even (his) rough earnings (sic),” his team said on being contacted. The Dangal star did make it to the Forbes’ Top 100 Celebrities’ list in 2013 when Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots made Rs 200 crore, a first at the domestic box office. He has not featured on the list of world’s highest paid actors ever. Aamir is picky about the movies and brand endorsements he does, but industry insiders believe that has nothing to do with his absence from the Forbes list. Ad

guru Prahlad Kakkar believes that Forbes had messed up. “He has always had this policy of few endorsements. He has always said ‘I will do just four endorsements and charge X amount of money, take it or leave it’. He must have ignored when they (Forbes) approached him and they are being vindictive,” he said.“The Empire strikes back,” he added jokingly. A major share of earnings for our celebs comes from brand endorsements. Being choosy, Aamir mostly works with one brand at a time, according to Forbes. Besides, his overseas earnings are truncated too. Dangal was a super-hit in China, but the government there gives only 25 per cent of the box-office revenue to foreign studios. Most countries give a share of 40 to 50 per cent to studios. Unlike Shah Rukh and Salman who churn out more than one film a year and Akshay who releases at least three or four movies annually, Aamir often takes more than a year on a single movie. Courtesy: HT

Kajal Aggarwal confirms Tamil remake of Queen

A

ctor Kajal Aggarwal, who was recently seen in the Telugu political thriller, Nene Raju Nenen Mantri, opposite Rana Daggubati, is all set to star in the Tamil remake of the 2014 hit Queen, which had Kangana Ranaut in the lead role. Excited to work in the film, Kajal says, “I loved the story ever since I saw the original! But we have to remember that the film, since it was made a couple of years ago, will have to be changed to keep it in sync with the current times.” Kangana had received appreciation from the audience and the critics for her portrayal of Rani, a young girl who goes alone on her honeymoon to Paris after her fiancé, played by actor Rajkummar Rao, ditches her. Kajal doesn’t feel any pressure to recreate the same magic as the original. “The makers of the film and I are very clear that we want to adapt Queen to Southern sensibilities, and do it our own way. While the script will essentially remain the same, the treatment will be personalised. I will also add my own touch to the role”, says Kajal, who has starred in Hindi films such as Singham (2011) and Do Lafzon Ki Kahaani (2016). Courtesy: HT

ctress Nargis Fakhri, who featured in glamorous roles in films like “Main Tera Hero”, “Azhar” and “Housefull 3”, says she is more comfortable doing non-glamorous parts. To a question by IANS on whether she is comfortable doing de-glam roles, Nargis said here: “Yeah sure, why not. It takes less time to get ready (laughed). I am actually much more comfortable in an non-glamorous roles.” She also said that coming from New York, she always believed in easy styling and hates when people make a faux paus. “Coming from New York City, we wear what we feel like wearing and we use fashion as a way to express ourselves and create our own identity. Something I dislike is when certain people deem certain things unfashionable or a faux pas. “Fashion is an art and everyone has different kind of taste. I prefer to wear gym clothes all day every day because

it’s comfortable and casual,” she said. Nargis felt empowered while walking the ramp in one of the creations. Asked if she enjoys cutting herself out from the world for some days, she said: “Every human needs to take time out to connect to themselves and to nature. “My goal is to make my entire life a holiday. If I feel like something is ‘work’, that means I should be doing something else. I’ve learned how important balance is and what is truly important in sustaining happiness in one’s life,” she said. Leonardo DiCaprio to play Leonardo da Vinci in new biopic

O

scar-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio is all set to portray the leading artist and intellectual from the Italian Renaissance Leonardo da Vinci in an upcoming biopic. The film marks DiCaprio’s ninth project in which he plays a real-life character. In his last film The Revenant, DiCaprio portrayed frontiersman Hugh Glass, the role which won him the best actor Oscar for the first time. The Great Gatsby actor will also produce the latest film under his Appian Way banner, alongside president of production Jennifer Davisson for Paramount, which has acquired the rights to Walter Isaacson’s book on Leonardo da Vinci, reported Variety. Leonardo Da Vinci, who was born in 1452 and died in 1519, is best known for the iconic Mona Lisa, as well as other artworks such as The Virgin of the Rocks,

Evan Rachel Wood

dedicates

The Last Supper, Vitruvian Man and Annunciation. He also was a skilled inventor. Leonardo DiCaprio apparently wanted to play the prominent artist since he was apparently named after him. His pregnant mother is said to have been looking at a Leonardo Da Vinci painting in a museum in Italy when he first kicked; which is why she decided to name her son Leonardo as well. Call it coincidence or just some magical hint by the universe, but both the artist and the actor excelled and gained fame for their work in the creative field. Actor, producer and environmental activist, Leonardo Di Caprio – who started his career with television commercials – has now become one of Hollywood’s A-listers. Daniel Craig confirms James Bond return

‘Edelweiss’ to son

A

“Westworld” star Evan Rachel Wood recently sang an emotional rendition of “Edelweiss” and dedicated it to her three-year-old son. The 29-year-old actor, who is onehalf of a musical group called Rebel and a Basketcase, took to Twitter to share a video of her performing the classic “Sound of Music” tune “Edelweiss”. “Full video of me singing #Edelweiss

at @zanecarney’s amazing show. Held back tears, but felt a lot of hope in the room. Won’t forget it,” Wood wrote. She further said that her dedication was not only for her little one but for anyone who needs hope today. “There’s been multiple times now, my son has woken up and found me in the living room, having watched the news all night, and I am quietly weeping. He doesn’t know hate. He

fter months of speculation, Daniel Craig on Wednesday confirmed that he would be returning to play James Bond one last time in a new film, due in theatres in November 2019. In an appearance on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Craig said, “I have been quite cagey about it. I have been doing interviews all day and people have been asking me and I think I’ve been rather coy. But kind of felt like if I was going to speak the truth I should speak truth to you.” “I think this is it. I just want to go out on a high note and I can’t wait,” he said. In 2015, he had famously said that if he ever played Bond again, “it would only be for money.” After wrapping up Spectre, he was asked if he would play James Bond again. “Now? I’d rather … slash my wrists,” he had replied. “No, not at the moment. Not at all. That’s fine. I’m over it at the moment. We’re done. All I want to do is move on.” Speaking about the outburst, Craid admitted that he should have shown more grace. “Instead of saying something with style and grace, I said something really stupid,” he said. Craig has appeared in four James Bond movies - Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall and Spectre. Courtesy: HT

A Girl in a Whirl Contd. from previous issue (Part 14) The very next Tuesday, we went to the pandit again. He wrote something on a piece of paper, tied a red thread called mauli around it, revolved it around the jyoti and asked me to chant a mantra after him. I complied. Then he asked me to hold that paper in my right fist tightly. He asked me to chant the same mantra seven times after him. I complied again. Then he gave me another slip with the mantra written on it and asked me to put the first one under my pillow. He asked me to chant the mantra written on the second one forty times for forty days every night before going to bed. He warned me to be careful not to miss even a single day. I paid him the remaining Rs 8000/-. He also said that he had started mars’ worship for me. We took those things and came home.

“Sister, make Sonia chant mantra every night without even a single miss. Don’t let her forget.”, Jassi’s mom reminded my mom. I began the regular chanting of the mantra forty times every night before going to bed. Sam almost called every day between ten and eleven A.M., but he was always drunk. I tried a lot to convince him not to drink. The other day, he was badly drunk. And when I tried to make him understand, he said pretty bad words involving my sister and called me a bitch. I was terribly irritated hearing that. I immediately disconnected the phone. He called me several times after that, but I didn’t take his call. I rather switched off my phone because it was absolutely futile to reason with him when he was drunk. I got terribly restless. “What happened, Sonia? Why are you so upset?”, perhaps mom had read my face. I kept mum for some time. But then I thought it would be better to tell her everything. “I cannot live with this man. Give me something to kill me. Let my story finish right here right now!”, I uttered in utmost frustration. “No Sonia, no! If anything happened to you, I wouldn’t be alive too.”, mom said and burst into cries. “O’ lord! What are we being punished for?”, mom began crying loudly. I had never seen mom cry in my life.

I was gawking at my miserable mom. I saw my mom’s tolerance had given in. I realized my mom needed more moral support than me. “Mom! Please don’t do so! If you did so, what would happen to all of us?”, I got even more nervous. I further realized that parents are also just like babies from inside. We children just keep on bothering them adding to their woes. Both, mom and I, helped each other to calm down. After a while, mom got up and got busy in domestic work. I, completely helpless, kept lying there and slept. Mom woke me up for lunch. Both of us had our lunch in a complete silence. All came home in the evening. All were having dinner. Meenu asked why I was so quiet. Before I speak, mom said that I was unwell. Mom kept an eye on me that I hadn’t read the mantra that night before going to bed. Mom came and asked me to chant the mantra. “I’m not gonna do that. What good has it done so far?”, I almost yelled. “Sonia, don’t miss any day. We will go and ask the pandit.”, mom somehow convinced me to chant the mantra. She sat beside me until I completed my patth. “Sonia, we need you a lot. Swear that you will never have ill thoughts for yourself. If anything happened to you, I would be dead too.”, mom embraced me and began crying. And I couldn’t help crying either. signs you were totally made for each other

You finish each other’s sentences

He makes you want to be a better person

When you pause what you are saying to search for a word, he finds it. You have lost count of how many times you have both started to say the exact same thing at the exact same time. It really feels like you can read each other’s minds. Sometimes you even catch yourself wondering why you bother talking to each other in the first place. You already know what he is going to say.

Both of you are constantly striving to improve yourselves. Not because of criticism or suggestions made; simply being together makes you want to be a better person.

You are unbelievably similar

There is nothing coincidental about it. The more you have gotten to know each other, the more you realize how weirdly similar you are. You like the same music, movies, sports, books and ice cream flavors. Even your beliefs, values, hopes and dreams match up. In fact, sometimes it has freaked you out. Like that time you found out she only eats the yellow and green Skittles, too? Yeah. That was uncanny.

Her problems feel like your own

It is impossible to feel happy when your sweetheart is feeling sad. Empathy comes easily for you both because you seriously seem to feel what the other feels. Dealing with life struggles has been so much easier since you found each other. You go through every up and down together.

STEPS FOR SIDS Walk. A. THON SUCCESSFULLY HELD AT North Surrey Secondary School Track Surrey August 26th

T

he captioned event has been successfully and gainfully run by Rob and Tanya Gill – in the memory of their beloved son- to raise money for further research into a diabolical children’s syndrome named S I D S (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). On February 19th, 2011, their son Azaan Singh Gill lost his life to this, when he was taking his afternoon nap. Although all the preventative safety measures were taken, SIDS still took his life. . Victims of SIDS are usually found in the crib, beds or sometimes in car seats after going to sleep without any struggle or suffering. Healthy Children between 0-24 months of age are most susceptible. The body simply stops, the heart and brain shut off like a light switch. There is no answer to why this happens. There is not enough research done on this cause. Words fail me to thank this parent duo, for arranging this fundraiser which was well attended by people from all walks of life. Apart from unrestrainedly donating, people ran in unison for a noble cause on a well maintained and beautifully decorated track and that too on a sunny day. During my confabulations with Rob and Tanya, it was pleasing to note that the donations received will be passed on to BC Children Hospital Vancouver to be used in the Pathology Research Clinic for

As a valuable member of the community, we invite you to become a sponsor of Steps for SIDS walka-thon. Through your support, we wish to create greater awareness for SIDS and hope this tragedy doesn’t happen to other families.” further research so as to hammer out a cure for this; so that this tragedy doesn’t happen to any other family. Hats off to all noble thinking personas behind this event and successful enactment of the same.

Aries ( 21 March – 19 April ) – It is a great time for you to be productive. Focusing your energy in the work world may be extremely beneficial right now. You will also make creative outlets and see what benefits to your business it makes good development for you.

Leo You may become more aware of the insight needed to elevate yourself to the position you’ve been working so hard to achieve. Abstain from affirming to simply please others. An adaptable state of mind to money can help you grab a surprising open door.

Strong adolescence friendship bond may boost mental health

W

orried over your son or daughter being too friendly with his or her mates? Take heart, having strong and intimate friendships during adolescence may help improve several aspects of mental health such as anxiety, social acceptance, selfworth and symptoms of depression, researchers say. “Our research found that the quality of friendships during adolescence may directly predict aspects of long-term mental and emotional health,” said lead author Rachel K. Narr, PhD candidate in clinical psychology at the University of Virginia. “Highschoolstudentswithhigher-qualitybestfriendshipstended to improve in several aspects of mental health over time, while teens who were popular among theirpeersduringhighschoolmay be more prone to social anxiety later in life,” Narr added.

The study, published in the journal Child Development, looked at a community sample of 169 adolescents over 10 years, from the time they were age 15 to when they were 25. Theyouthwereracially,ethnicallyandsocio-economicallydiverse, with58percentCaucasian,29per cent African American and eight per cent of mixed race or ethnicityandwithmedianfamilyincome

$40,000 to $59,999. Adolescents were assessed annually, answering questions about who their closest friends were, reporting on their friendships and participating in interviews and assessments exploring such feelings as anxiety, social acceptance, self-worth and symptoms of depression. Researchers found that teens

who prioritised close friendships at age 15 had lower social anxiety, an increased sense of self-worth and fewer symptoms of depression by the time they reached age 25 than their peers. Neither having a strong friendship nor being more popular predicted short-term changes in mental health, the researchers noted. The researchers suggested that this may be because positive experiences with friends help bolster positive feelings about oneself during a stage of life when personal identity is being developed. Also, close friendships may set adolescents on a trajectory to expect and therefore encourage supportive experiences in the future. Courtesy: IANS

5 easy steps to get silky straight hair at home

W

ho doesn’t love the idea of silky and smooth straight hair? This chic hairstyle in on almost every girl’s hair lust list. There are a number of tempting hair products and in-salon treatments to choose from. But, what if we told you that you can actually get salon-worthy straight hair at home. No need for expensive sessions, we’ve got you covered! To step out of the house with glossy, smooth and perfectly straight hair is every woman’s dream. And while we all have our own frizz-taming routines, it’s important to get the technique right and use the adequate products and tools, as hair straightening can be very damaging to the hair if done improperly. Hairstylist to the stars Asgar Saboo shares his fail-proof 5-step guide to help you straighten your hair from home and keep your locks looking silky. Step 1: Use a high quality bristle brush to detangle your hair, as these type of brushes evenly distribute the sebum from the scalp to the ends of the hair and will keep your locks looking shiny and frizz-less. Step2:Applyaheatserumtowetor towel-driedhair.Startwithonepump of product and rub it into the palm of your hands before distributing it

evenly.Avoidlettingtheproductget near the roots, as this can make your hair look lank and greasy. Step 3: Divide your hair into sections and clip them up. Blow dry each section going from root to tip, carefully pulling the round brush away from your head as you do so. It’s best to use your hair dryer at medium temperature settings to avoid drying out your hair. Step 4: Once your hair is dry, clamp the straightening iron around your hair and gently smoothen each strand. Choose small strands for more effective results. It’s best to use the straightener about an inch away from the roots to get a little bit of volume, advises the hair expert. Step 5: Apply a shine-boosting serum to finish off the look. Courtesy: TNN

Managing Daily Stress Prof. Surinder Shaun Kochhar LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM (A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp.)

Successfully

If you make your passion your profession, then you are head over heels in love with your work. Such type of work situation relaxes instead of doling out distress.

E

verybody works. And work often leads tostress. Even a homemaker experience stress as it is a full time job. We all are experienced about stress. Whether you’re working as a banker, a realtor or driving a truck or a day care worker corralling a roomful of toddlers, they all experience stress daily without fail. Simply speaking, stress is of two types. Eustressand Distress. Eustress is good for health whereas Distress is bad or very bad for health. Every person has his own style of handling distress and we keep on using the same defense mechanism(s) to tackle this daily monster.

Eustress Defined: Eustress means positive

or beneficial stress—either psychological, physical (e.g. exercise), or biochemical/ radiological (hormesis). The term was-in original- coined by endocrinologist Hans Selye, consisting of the Greek prefix eu- meaning “good”, and stress, literally meaning “good stress. An example of eustress is the positive stress one experiences a night before to board an airplane so as to be awake as planned and be at the airport in time.

Distress Defined:

Distress is a number one silent killer. And distress is a risk factor for heart disease, brain stroke and depression. Although the relationship isn’t completely clear, some people with high levels of stress or prolonged stress may have higher blood cholesterol or increased blood pressure or be more prone to developing arteriosclerosis[hardening of arteries] or atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries).

How to handle stress suc-

SEPTEMBER 2017

cessfully:

Try to take the pressure off a.s.a.p. Learn to reduce your stress. Your first line of defense is to identify your stressors and try to remove or control them from your daily life. For example, to the extent possible, you may change the stressful job, alter your schedule or avoid certain people who cause you stress. One way to avoid stress is to make sure you’re not setting unrealistic goals for yourself. If your goals are too difficult to achieve, you won’t achieve them and you will feel distress. Towards solution, try to be SMART. Set your personal goals using the SMART approach:

Specific: Choose one small

goal at a time and write it down. Make sure to include as many details about your goal as possible. Measurable: Make sure you can measure or count the goal. Attainable:.Make sure your goal is attainable by dint of hard work. Realistic: Make sure your goal is something you are willing to work towards it. Time-limited:Make sure your goal has a timeline. Set a specific, realistic date to finish or achieve your goal.

Develop Coping Skills to handle stress: Primary, there are three basic types of coping skills: • Physical/behavioural skills, • Thinking (cognitive)/mental skills and • Personal/social skills.

Physical/Behavioural coping skills: These are skills

that involve taking care of you

/saentertainmentnewsmagazine

and staying stress free: These include

• Physical activity: Physi-

cal activity helps clear your mind, reduce stress and boost your energy. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate- to-vigorous physical activity per week. By having a daily walk, a fitness class or a game of badminton is always helpful. Doing an activity with friends or loved ones is good for your mental health and boosts motivation to be enduringlyactive. • Yoga: Yoga and slow stretching – even just five to 10 minutes a day –promote relaxation to reduce stress. Consult some yoga teacher to understand what type of yoga exercises you need to work on a particular area of your body.

• Relaxation exercises:

There are lots of different relaxation techniques. But breathing exercises are among the most popular and effective. Two simple ones that you can try are exhalation breathing and deep breathing. Look around, many people are there to help you. You can refer to you tube or various websites. Locally free classes are offered sometimes. • Healthy diet: Healthy diet is the key along with daily exercise. If you eat good foods, your body will work better. But a diet that includes too much caffeine, sugar, salt and saturated and Tran fat can make you feel restless, frustrated, and sluggish. Eat a wellbalanced diet with plenty of vegetables, fruit, whole grains, low-fat dairy (and dairy alternatives), and lean

@ansalmedia

/saentertainmentnewsmagazine

meat (and meat alternatives). Limit salt, sugar, saturated and Trans fats. • Proper sleep: A seven hour sleep is necessary. Approx. Only 10 per cent people in the world get freshened up with 6 hr. sleep. If you cannot get sleep on a day, then get up. Don’t even try to sleep if your body won’t let you. Clock watching, tossing and turning will only make you tense, and that leads to stress. Instead, relax in a comfortable chair. Read a book or do a puzzle. Reading a book can easily help you sleep as at time eyes are not prepared to work and melatonin in the blood finally put us in the sleeping mode. The ultimate purpose of reading is to reduce anxiety about not sleeping which will ultimately make it easier to sleep.

Mental coping skills

These skills involve using your thoughts and mind to counteract negative effects of stress in succession. Towards solution, we can try: • Make a list of every possible solution or method of dealing with your stressful situation. • Pick up and implement the best solution you think is going to be. • If the solution solved the problem, well. If not, select the next solution on the list and see if that works, and so on.

Meditation

We can be far from the madding environment. Meditation can help settle your mind, allowing you to think more calmly. It also allows you to recharge your cognitive thinking to get ready for the day. A 20 minute meditation twice a day is good enough. Our Muslim brothers read Names five times a day help in relaxing the mind. Remember, .meditation is not a quick fix: It requires patience and practice but it has lots of benefits as per experts.

Here’s one technique that you can try.

• Choose a quiet place with no interruption. • Don’t rush into meditation. • When you are relaxed, breathe slowly and evenly. Do not forget to close your eyes. You may wish to slowly repeat a pleasant-sounding word or mantra e.g. Om, This will bring peace or harmony, in your mind as you breathe.

/saentertainment_magazine

Do this for 10 to 20 minutes.

Eustress is good stress and Distress is bad stress. To live a long happy life, you need Eustress; It is not the load of stress that breaks us down, it is the way how we carry it. So fine tune your daily stress handling mechanism so as to be a perennial gainer When your mind wanders, gently bring it back to concentrating on your mantra or your breath.

• Towards finish, you can say your mantra out loud, deliberately and slowly. Then open your eyes and look around for a minute and thentend up and stretch.

Personal/Social coping skills

Spend time for things that give you pleasure and feed your spirit, is an important coping tool. Some of the most effective activities are to: • Spend quality time with your friends and family. • If you follow a religious faith, then explore your spirituality. Get involved in a place of worship, such as a Mender, Gurudwara, .Church or mosque. Spend time in the company of nature. • Nurture your hobbies and personal interests. • Enjoy outings in nature, whether it’s a city park, a beach or a country road. • Try volunteering in succession. It helps divert attention from yourself and can reduce your anxiety. In fine, we can conclude that it’s important to keep workplace stress under control. No matter how busy our job is. By taking a walk with friends or family members, meditation and playing a game of our choice surely relax us. By confabulating with people around, whom we are comfortable with a little humour in place, we can handle distress successfully and lead a happy life sans disesase.

The Ultimate Toothpaste Guide

A

re you feeling overwhelmed by the dizzying number of options in the toothpaste aisle? Hey, Dr. Sharma is a Surrey orthodontist with serious teeth expertise and even he admits that differentiating between the different types of toothpaste can take some work. Undergoing orthodontic treatment makes the choice even more daunting and patients at Aura Orthodontics frequently ask what the best toothpaste for braces is. To help demystify it, we’ve compiled the ultimate toothpaste buying guide to keep your mouth healthy and happy.

Some Toothpaste Background Toothpaste, officially known as dentifrice, is an important part of your tooth cleaning routine. Found in gel, paste and powder form, the product helps to amp up your toothbrush’s cleaning abilities and remove plaque. However, the mechanical action of brushing your chompers is way more crucial than the type of toothpaste you use as long as your paste contains fluoride. In fact, a good chunk of the toothpaste features are really just marketing gimmicks and the formulas don’t make your mouth any healthier than a regular old fluoride variety does. There are some exceptions, which we’ll get into. Just be sure your toothpaste is approved by the American or Canadian Dental Association (CDA). While a CDA seal of approval isn’t a requirement for toothpaste makers, those that are stamped with it have given the CDA data that shows their toothpaste is beneficial to consumers’ oral health. Types of Toothpaste and Ingredients to Look for Like we said, fluoride is the most important ingredient in toothpaste and it’s a must even if your water has fluoride in it. While there are some conspiracy theories about it being dangerous, it’s perfectly safe in small amounts and adding it to water sources dramatically decreases the incidences of tooth decay in communities. Fluoride is a natural mineral that hardens the enamel. Additionally, it helps in the demineralization and remineralization processes that occur in our mouths. Acids in the saliva attack the mineral layers in the teeth (demineralization) and if remineralization, which is when minerals are redeposited, doesn’t occur, cavities form. Fluoride helps protect the teeth from the acids and also hastens remineralization and makes it more effective. Any toothpaste with fluoride will do for most people as long as they’re brushing, flossing and visiting a

phates, triclosan and zinc citrate can reduce tarter, which is hardened plaque, a little more effectively than run of the mill formulas.

That’s not to say there aren’t other toothpastes that could work for you, particularly if you have a specific issue like sensitive teeth. What Toothpaste to Use With Braces If you’re straightening your teeth with Invisalign, your oral hygiene routine will stay the same. If you have braces, you’ll have to work a little harder to maintain clean, cavity-free teeth. At Aura Orthodontics, we recommend any fluoride toothpaste with the CDA seal of approval. Choose one that tastes delicious so that you’ll want to brush and be sure to follow the brushing and flossing techniques recommended by Dr. Sharma. If you experience sensitivity, a toothpaste for sensitive teeth might be a good bet for you and could make your braces-wearing experience a more comfortable one. We do typically advise our patients to stay away from whitening toothpaste while they’re rocking their braces. It will only whiten the visible areas of the teeth and not the parts hidden by the brackets, which could lead to an uneven color when your braces come off. Additionally, it can make teeth more sensitive and that’s not something you want when undergoing orthodontic treatment. Whether it’s offering toothpaste recommendations or demonstrating how to use a floss threader, Dr. Sharma pulls out all of the stops to ensure his Surrey and Abbotsford braces and Invisalign patients feel confident in maintaining good oral hygiene throughout their treatment. If you have a question, we’re always happy to answer it at Aura Orthodontics. Feel free to give us a call or ask at your next appointment. Not a patient? Schedule a free consultation and learn about your options for achieving a smile you love.

Try these fashion tips to let out your inner gypsy and nail the bohemian look this season. 4 Avoid neon as much as you can. Bright colours always attract more heat and light to your boho-chic outfit. 4 Don’t forget fringe bag and batik tote. 4 Instead of wearing a scarf on your body, wrap it around your waist or head. It is the perfect way to add some dazzling style to your look and it also helps cover up a bad hair day. 4 Wearing a floppy and tanned hat can not only protect you from the sun, but also be a bohemian chic accessory. 4 Wearing a floppy and tanned hat can not only protect you from the sun, but also be a bohemian chic accessory. 4 Look into what your mother and grandmother’s closets hold for you, something which didn’t attract you a while ago might solve the purpose now. For instance, unique vintage pieces such as flare pants, floral shirts or skirts, halter tops or swing skirts are the basics of boho-chic look. 4 Interestingly, the shawl/dupatta reserved for special occasions could be a great addition to your outfit. Look for beautiful ethnic prints and patterns such as ikat and accentuate your regular outfit with a touch of ethnicity. Layer the shawl on your shoulders or knot it in the front. 4 Make your tank top and bottoms more interesting by adding a colourful kimono or colours as basic as white and pastel to your basic outfit or dress. Pair up your kimono with a romper for the casual look. 4 Even if you go with your favourite slim fit denims or with your summer dress, try layering it with a loose and long kimono, shrug, a printed jacket or a scarf to make it more appealing. Add the touch of femininity by layering loose layers over fitted outfit, the key here to balance the outfit. 4 Vintage belts are the saviour to every plus

One-minute party hairstyles

Lazy girls, rejoice. These sexy hairdos take less than a minute to pull together. Clip up half A All you need for this nifty hairdo is a hair clip and a creative streak. Pull up a section of hair on either the left or the right side, or pull the front section back and clip it at the crown. Tease the hair at the crown before you pull it back for volume. Team it with: A structured ensemble or a skirt-and-jacket combination. Even Kate Middleton swears by this style when she’s going from a day event to a brunch. Low pony The low ponytail is a glamorous yet low maintenance style and needs a minute to create. Spray your hair and smooth it down. Pull it into a low-slung pony that sits on the nape of the neck. Attach a floral or a studded decorative pin over the band to look party-ready. Team it with: A feminine knee-length dress or even a jumpsuit. This is a versatile hairdo that looks effortless with androgynous outfits, too. 5-Second top knot Hide your frizz with a top knot. Gather your hair into a high ponytail and twist it into a bun. To smoothen it out, apply a shine serum. Embellish the knot with beads. You will look cool and relaxed without giving away last night’s escapades. Team it with: A sequinned maxi dress and an animal print coat to keep warm. Feather dusters or long danglers on your ears will make things ultra sexy. Courtesy: PTI

OF DRESS-UP PLAY FOR CHILDREN By allowing children to act out their fears through dress-up and role playing, we are helping their emotional development. Wooden Toy Bow and Arrow Bella Luna Toys

6. Motor Skills Children develop fine motor skills by putting on dress-up clothes, whether buttoning a shirt, zipping up pants, or tying on a pirate’s bandana They use their large motor skills when engaged in role-play, whether they are jumping like a superhero, running like a baseball player, or twirling like a ballerina. 7. Gender Exploration When children choose costumes and characters to be, they are able to explore different gender identities and the behaviors of those characters. While boys often want to be superheroes, firemen, or pirates, and girls often want to be fairies and princesses, it is normal and healthy for children to try on different gender roles as they learn about the world. A child should never be ridiculed for pretending to be a different gender.

Children are naturally imitative creatures. They learn about the world by imitating the lives of the adults and others around them. Through dress-up and dramatic role-play, children explore the lives of other people by imitating their actions, feelings and words. 9. Socialization Dress-up play encourages cooperation and taking turns. Children learn how to negotiate as they agree on stories and rules. They develop interest in others and learn how to give-and-take. 10. Imagination Children’s imaginations are limitless, and have not yet been hardened and constrained by the “realities” of the world. Rudolf Steiner, the founder of Waldorf education, believed that imaginative play in early childhood is the key to creative thinking during the adult years. When children engage in dressup play, their imaginations are given free reign. There is no limit to who, where, or what they can be. Wishing the children in your life many hours of fun dress-up play!

8. Imitation

C

hildren throughout the ages have enjoyed dressing up in costumes and engaging in dramatic roleplaying. Whether your child is a dragon, a princess, or a fairy, your child’s brain is going into high gear when she puts on a costume! And although it may appear to you as just play, when your child dons that cape, crown, or pirate’s eyepatch, his brain is developing in more ways than you can imagine. As early childhood educators know, play is the work of the child, and children benefit cognitively, physically, socially, and emotionally through dress-up play. Here are 10 developmental benefits of dress up play for kids: 1. Brain Building Dress-up engages your child’s brain and memory. Dramatic play requires kids to remember what they’ve seen or heard. They remember how their mother behaves when performing household chores when they are imitating her. Or they recall the details of a fairy tale they’ve heard before acting it out. 2. Vocabulary Building Dress-up play builds vocabulary as a child decides what his or her character would say. It gives them a chance to expand their vocabularies

with words and phrases that they might have heard in stories, but wouldn’t ordinarily use. Children may then begin to use these new words in conversations. 3. Problem-Solving Who’s going to be the doctor? Who’s going to be the patient? Children must make decisions when they engage in dress-up play. They practice problem-solving problems when deciding on what costumes elements and props each character needs to act out a scenario. 4. Empathy When a child is engaged in role-play, it helps her see the world through another’s eyes which increases empathy – whether pretending to be a parent nurturing a baby, a doctor taking care of an injured patient, or a firefighter putting out a fire. Dramatic play helps children understand the role that helpers play in in our lives.

A1SPORTSLTD

5. Emotional Development Children are constantly confronted with scary situations that they don’t understand – whether witnessing an accident in real life, or seeing violent images on TV. Children process their fears through play, which helps them make sense of the world, and overcome their feelings of helplessness.

Have you ever heard of the

Indian Amazon? T

emples, backwaters, endless paddy fields and golden beaches that stretch for miles. This is the imagery that a travel through India’s southern peninsula evokes. Imagine then, thick evergreen forests hidden behind the gently swaying palm trees. Sholas are high-altitude evergreen forests found along the Western Ghats in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The name is probably derived from the Tamil word ‘cholai’ meaning thicket or bamboo clump. Alternatively, it could have originated from the Prakrit golla which, in turn, is derived from the Sanskrit ‘gulma’ meaning a thicket. A distinct feature of shola forests is that while they grow thick in the valleys and folds of mountains, the mountains themselves are rolling hills of grass. Together, they form the shola-grassland mosaic landscape. One patch — the Kukkal shola — is easily accessible from Kodaikanal. It is the only little patch of shola left on the flanks of the Kukkal plateau, an hour long idyllic drive to the west of Kodaikanal and the Kukkal village in the Dindigul district in Tamil Nadu, from where it gets its name. Beyond the shola is the most extensive remaining grassland of the Palani hills, in which Kodaikanal sits, providing a glimpse into how these hills must once have appeared. The villagers will tell you that at one time before the Europeans arrived

alanda is mainly known for its university, though not in existence as of now. The Nalanda University was a flourishing center of higher learning. Other than the university which is in ruins, Nalanda has other tourist attractions that include Nalanda Museum, Buddhist Monasteries, and Nalanda Mahavihar. Here are a few places that are a must visit if you are planning a trip to Nalanda. Hieun Tsang Memorial Hall The memorial was built in the memory of Hieun-Tsang, the famous Chinese traveler and scholar. Hieun Tsang came to India in fifth century AD and studied at the famous university of Nalanda. The ruins of the university are spread in 14 hectares. Chinese traveler Hieun Tsang writes that the university had more than ten thousand students and more than one thousand faculty members. Nav Nalanda Vihar In the year 1951 Indian government decided to reestablish the past glory of Nalanda and in this effort it decided to institute a center of higher learning. The center aims to study Buddhism and its essence in modern times. Near the place

in these parts, the sholas extended from the peaks of the Palani hills (where Kodaikanal sits), almost touching the plains. Because the timber here held no commercial value, large tracts were cleared to monetise the land by planting eucalyptus, pine and wattle. While the conditions are right for these alien species to flourish, they don’t support life and walking through these silent plantations leaves you with the eerie feeling that you are on a ghost planet. The 10-minute walk from Mannavanur village, 35 km from Kodaikanal, could leave you a little out of breath. Kundalpur Kundalpur is located at the distance of 1.6 kilometers from the remnants of the Nalanda University. The place is an important destination for Jains, particularly for the Digambar sect of the Jains. Digambar Jain followers believe that the 24th and the last Tirthankar, Lord Mahavira was born here. The Museum Any society which has a glorious history wants to save the same in various methods, and one of them is to preserve all those historical materials in a museum. The museum meant to preserve the golden past of Nalanda was instituted in the year 1971. The museum has a huge collection of ancient manuscripts and Buddhist statues. Archeologists found these manuscripts during excavation of the sites at Nalanda.
