“JAU TAU PREM KHELAN KA CHAO” Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji

T

MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC

his year we will be celebrating the 550 th Prakash Purab of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji in November Although we Correlate birth of Khalsa with Guru Gobind Singh Ji with Events happening in 1699 Vaisakhi, it was Baba Nanak who laid the Foundation for Khalsa. In his Bani “ Jeo To Prem Kkelan ka Choa, Sirr Dhar Tali Gali Meri Aao” the Fundamental Principle of Khalsa is Strongly put Forward. If one want to walk on the Path of Devotional Love, one needs to Surrender his/ her Ego to the Guru First. We will be Celebrating the 320 th Birthday of the Formation of the Order of Khalsa this year. Well Congratulations to you all. Vishal Nagar Kirtan are arranged all over the World. In Canada Several cities also conducts Nagar Kirtan. The one in Surrey BC draws in over 500,000 Devotees Making it the Largest Event in North America. Our First Nine Guru ji’s Shaped us in to being a Human of Highest Character and Morality with Qualities a Saintly Person Possess, it was the Tenth Master who brought in to being Saint,Soldier and Scholar. Several months prior to the Vaisakhi of 1699 Guru Gobind Rai our Tenth Guru invited followers from all over India to come to Anandpur Sahib. Many came as Sign of Respect while some came out of Curiosity. On that Vaisakhi day the Guru Ji. Addressed the Congregation with a most Stirring Oration on his Devine Mission of restoring their Faith and Preserving Dharma ( Righteousness ). After his inspirational discourse Guru Ji Flashed his Sword Naked and asked “ Is there any one among you who is Prepared to die for Righteousness?” This Caused Great turmoil and Confusion. Some left while other began to look at Each other in Amazement. It was a Crowd of 80,000. A brave Sikh from Lahore Daya Ram Stood up and offered his head to the Master. The Guru took him to a tent near by, after some time came out alone with a blood dripping Sword. The Guru then asked for Another head. Dharam Das was the one to obey the order. This act did not end there. Soon Three More. Mohkam Chand,Sahib Chand & Himmat Rai offered their heads to the Guru. Each Sikh was taken to the tent with a sound of Sword being used. A little later the Guru Ji brought these five Braves in New Clothing wearing the 5 Kakkars.

They were Renamed by the Guru Ji and were Called Panj Pyare ( 5 Beloved ) 4 Daya Singh 4 Dharam Singh 4 Himmat Singh 4 Mohkam Singh 4 Sahib Singh These are also the 5 Stages of Spiritual Journey Starting with Daya / Compassion to Giving Birth to Dharam With in then having the Courage and Meditative sense to Merge With Sahib ( God ). Guru Gobind Rai then Stood in Front of these Panj Pyare asking for him to be Baptized also hence Changing his name from Gobind Rai to Gobind Singh. “ Waho Waho Gobind Singh Ji Apey Gur Chela Apey Gur Chela “. This Created Equality, Democracy ,

Common Place of Worship , Common External Appearance with Bhakti and Shakti. Creation of Khalsa Starts with Founder of Sikhism Guru Nanak Dev Ji Who also says. “Jo Tau Prem Khelan ka Chao,Sirr Dhar Gali Mori Aao “. If you want to walk on the Path of Love then put your head on our palm and walk towards me. ( Remove ones Ego / Haumey. ) it took 240 years through the Ten Guru Ji ‘s to Create the Perfect Image of Saint, Scholar and Soldier called Khalsa.

Guru Ji Prescribed Rehat Maryada the Code of Conduct. “ Rehni Rahey Soi Sikh Mera, oh Sahib Mein uss ka Chera “. In Surrey and Vancouver Sikhs are blessed to have Yearly Nagar Keertan where hundreds of Thousands attend as Devotees. This is Guru ji’s Mehar.

4Kesh ( uncut hair ) 4Kara. ( iron Bracelet) 4Kanga ( wooden comb ) 4Kachera ( Military Shorts ) 4Kirpan ( Sword )

Amrit was Prepared in an Iron Vessel with Warer and Patasey ( sugar puffs ) being added by Mata Sahib Kaur Ji. A Khanda ( Double edge Sword ) was used to stir it while Bani of Japji, Jaap, Choupai, Sawaiyiyae and Anand Sahib was recited. The Master Baptised these 5 Sikhs by sprinkling Amrit in their Eyes , Hair and then given them to drink it 5 times while reciting “ Waheguru Ji ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji ki Fateh “

This festival celebrates the welcoming of the harvest season for the rabi crops and people celebrate this day with a lot of zeal and excitement by performing Gidhha and bhangra. The festival holds a great religious significance for the people of the Sikh community because it was the day in year 1699 that the tenth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh laid the foundation stone for Panth Khalsa-the Order of the Pure Ones.

Day of celebration of Baisakhi

Bihu’ in Assam, ‘Pooram Vishu’ in Kerala and Puthandu in Tamil Nadu.

Baisakhi festival for Farmers

For the huge farming community of the state of Haryana and Punjab, this day is believed to mark a new year as it is the time for harvest of the Rabi crops. Farmers take the opportunity, on this day to show gratitude to God for such great harvest and for all the future joyous events ahead. Most people celebrate this day by dancing, singing, buying new clothes and cooking delicious food. Baisakhi fairs are also organized in a number of villages of Punjab.

Every year Baisakhi is celebrated on the first day of the Vaisakh month (that is April or May), which is in accordance with the Sikh calendar and that is why the festival has been given the name of Baisakhi. Every year, Baisakhi falls on 13th of April and on 14th April in every 36 years and this difference is because of the fact that Baisakhi is celebrated on the basis of solar calendar and not the lunar calendar. This pious festival is celebrated all over the country in its different parts with different names and different cultures follow different rituals for celebrating the festival. The date of Baisakhi coincides with that of the ‘Naba Barsha’ in Bengal, ‘Rongali

How do people celebrate the festival of Baisakhi? Most of the major activities`

related to the festival are organized in Gurudwara. People get up early in the morning and start preparing for the day. Also many of them take bath in the holy river as a way of celebrating during the auspicious occasion. People visit to their nearby Gurudwara and take part in the parayer being held at the Gurudwara and after the prayer people receive special Prashad for the day which is then followed by langar which is the community lunch as organized by the Gurudwara authorities. Then, during the day time a Biasakhi procession is taken out by the people of Sikh faith which is lead by the Panj piaras. This procession moves all through the city with devotional songs playing in the background.

History related to Baisakhi

The festival of Baisakhi is celebrated as a way of remembering the day when the Khalsa Panth was founded and also as the New Year of the Sikh community. Its origin is related to the year 1699, when Baisakhi day was celebrated which was organized by the Tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh to form Khalsa (the union of the saint soldiers to fight against the oppressive acts). 7 IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF LIFE INSURANCE

Sandeep Ahuja

L

ife insurance is an immensely beneficial tool that offers you financial protection against the risk of death. But there seems to be a lot of confusion in general about the concept due to varied reasons such as the complex nature of life insurance and people’s tendency to avoid discussing about their demise. Below mentioned important aspects about life insurance will help you understand the concept so as to enable you in making the wise decision to invest in life insurance. Life insurance helps compensate for the inevitable financial consequences arising due to the death of the insured. It lessens the sudden financial burden of the family members at the time of unexpected death of their loved one. The family can use the claim benefit to pay the funeral expenses, outstanding debts and mortgages, planned educational expenses and lost income. Thus, a life insurance policy can provide valuable peace of mind to the policy holder as he is assured that it would come to the rescue of his loved ones in case he ceases to exist. Life Insurance is an immensely beneficial financial tool If you have financial dependents, it is vital that you should purchase life insurance. Your spouse or dependent children necessarily require financial protection. But, even if you are someone’s ex-spouse, sibling of a dependent adult, a child of dependent parents, an employer, an employee or a business partner, you may need to purchase insurance. On the other hand, if you are stably retired or financially independent and your absence won’t cause financial hardship for anybody, then you don’t need life insurance. However, you can use life insurance as an effective financial tool. A life insurance policy involves four primary stakeholders/key persons These are- the insurer, the owner, the insured and the beneficiary. Insurance company is the insurer which provides life insurance coverage and pays out claims in the case of a death. The owner of the policy pays premiums to the insurance company. The person upon

whose life the policy is based is the ‘insured.’ And finally, the beneficiary is the person, trust or other entity who will receive the claim (death benefit) in case the insured dies. For example, Mr. A is both the owner and the insured for a life insurance policy with XYZ insurance company (insured). He will pay the premiums to the insurance company. His spouse Mrs. B is the beneficiary. So, she will receive the death benefit in case Mr. A dies. Choices available for life insurance Among the various choices available for life insurance, we can broadly categorize life insurance into Term Insurance and Permanent Insurance. While on one hand, Term Life plan offers protection with minimum expenses but limited features, Universal Life plan offers most comprehensive coverage and features by investing more payment in the premiums. In term life insurance, the policy premium is based upon the probability that the insured will die within a stated term—typically 10, 20 or 30 years. The premiums are guaranteed during the opted term after which they can escalate. But, in permanent life insurance, the premiums are guaranteed for life. Permanent life insurance offers cash build up within the policy. Consult an advisor in-person if you plan to purchase life insurance Though online tools can provide you initial assistance in gaining a general idea about financial requirements (premiums) of life insurance policy, when you actually intend to purchase insurance, it’s always better to consult an expert insurance agent. Since the agent is well aware of the related procedures for application and underwriting and, has a better understanding of various insurance carriers offering insurance, he will help you in choosing the best option available at affordable rates keeping in mind your health condition and financial

capability. If you intend to cancel an existing policy that you consider is inappropriate, proceed carefully If you feel that your present insurance policy is not appropriate or, you don’t require it anymore, take necessary steps before cancelling it. If you need to replace an existing overpaid policy with

an appropriate one, buy the right policy coverage before cancelling the existing one. It’s indeed important because with the passage of time, any change/complication in your health condition may also render you ineligible for a new policy, leaving you without any coverage. A timely consultation with an experienced advisor will help you in getting proper coverage in place before you cancel the existing policy. Life insurance is meant to protect you against the risk of death; it should not be considered as an investment tool Though there is an investment feature in some life insurance policies, insurance is actually meant to provide you protection against the risk of death. It is meant to safeguard your family in the event of your untimely death. But, if you haven’t yet invested in other suitable investment plans, you can purchase a life insurance with an investment feature such as a Whole Life Insurance or Universal Life

Insurance. I hope the above explanation has clarified most of your queries about life insurance and will help you in making the wise decision of purchasing a suitable life insurance in the best interest of your loved ones. As an independent insurance advisor working through Punjab Insurance Agency, I deal with different insurance companies offering plans for different types of insurance. I can explain to you in detail, the insurance plan options and coverage that are suitable for your needs and resources. Besides, I can also help you to purchase mortgage insurance, super visa insurance, disability insurance, critical illness insurance, extended medical plans, group medical plans, RESP, RRSP, travel insurance, TFSA accounts, health and dental plans along with estate planning suitable for your needs and resources.

s I met this 6 ‘lanky, Leonian, an actor, character, producer, script writer and director for a maiden interface, I found him busy with his present assignment of shooting a new Punjabi film as a director in our area. After exchange of pleasantries, we settled for a talk. To walk the talk, I queried this “product of Hollywood” where he took the first breath of his life, and he informed that he was born in Village Dhugga (Distt. Hoshiarpur (Pb.). His rev. father Sr. Bakhshish Singh Dhugga– a military officer and mother Mrs. Gurwant Kaur, a homemaker, led him to England where he grew and studied up. This Punjabi Putre is a Post Graduate in Industrial Engg. He did Masters in Theatre Arts also to follow his passion. When I asked, why he chose this passion, this industry, this profession, named Theatre, He stated “I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms; the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.” To pursue his interests, after completion of education, he moved to Hollywood – the Mecca of film making and opened his own theatre company named Wandering Players’ Theatre Company. The company staged several World and US premieres of plays from India. Western audiences were exposed to the works of Rabindranath Tagore for

Nowadays, Films and Television have become, what I like to say, “Microwave Media,” though majority of matured audiences like the stuff which is well prepared in the oven; giving the production a time to simmer on the burner of time to let the juices flowing- and slow-cook to perfection. May be, your nod is with me now, as I venture to write that a script is a film’s recipe. This recipe is just a piece of paper to the novice cook, but even a recipe needs time, beyond an iota of doubt, to be perfected- in deft and well directed hands -before it’s given to the masses for mental consumption and ultimate relaxation. The 4 -decade experience of Kavi Raj, a Hollywood actorturned story -writer and Director is indeed a force to reckon with in the present scenario -ushering in a change. the first time, in addition to plays like Sakharam Binder and Shakuntala. This was the first professional South Asian theatre company in the USA. This company staged more than 50 Stage Plays down the lane of time. To date he has acted in more than 250 English Films and TV shows. This humongous effort deserve appreciation from any angle. He became the first ever South Asian actor to be signed on as a regular in a major TV series, St. Elsewhere. He was a cast member for the first two seasons of the medical drama, and after being let go continued to appear on a recurring basis. Raz has appeared in over 200 plays, TV

A film is - or should be more music based than like a fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings on silver screen. The theme behind the emotion, the meaning, all those things come along as a total package. Normally, an artist does not create, God creates it. But an artiste earns, learns, visualise, assemble or may I venture to say- copy or snip from here, there and everywhere to do justice to the character in mind. While talking to himself/herself an artist keeps telling that: Let me act well, my part; there all the honour lies. shows and films, including guest appearances on The A-Team, M*A*S*H and Star Trek: The Next Generation. In the last 10 years he is into the direction field of Film making. Raz began his career as a filmmaker with The Gold Bracelet, a movie about a Sikh man faced with the realities of post-9/11. Among the enormous work he has done, few of his achievements -as a director -are Ut-infra: • The Black Prince • Barefoot warriors At present he is busy making another Punjabi movie Sarabha- Cry for Freedom. Passionately, I feel, life is a moving picture, of which everyone is the writer, director, performer, producer and critic also of his own film called life. When I said these words to him, he stated with a long pause, half lost in reminiscing of his past life to date, “If anyone wants to be a good actor or director in films, firstly one has to see life, secondly see movies/theatre, thirdly read literature and at last talk to the masses about their series of experiences. If someone does not follow this path dedicatedly, persistently and consistently, then he/she becomes an average director. An average director directs. A good director leads and follows at the same time; whereas, a great director gives life to a work of art- gives it a heartbeat… a pulse… opens its eyes to the world of viewing.” True to his name Kavi, being a script writer, himself, births the baby, then a Producer decides to raise the child/

produce the film and sends it off to the school of production. Since- in some cases-he writes the script or screenplay of the play/ drama/ movie[s] etc., then his direction effort becomes near-perfect because he already imagined each shot nicely in his mind while writing the story/screenplay. He even has an image of the artiste who is going to play the particular role; that is why the final product is worth producing. On sports front he is fond of Field Hockey, Football and volleyball. In Field Hockey he was captain of the team in USA at National level. On health front, the secret of his good health is being easy going and preferring healthy food- being health conscious. When I requested him to articulate about his 40 years tryst with Hollywood industry, he stated, “I really feel satisfied and enjoyed working and living there in succession. Industry is very up to date, competitive and amazing with all the logistics in place.” When I asked him, after 10 years where he sees himself; humbly he quipped, “Health permitting, I want to do meaningful Cinema in Punjabi, Hindi and English languages at international level to educate/entertain the masses. With Kavi Raz now finally focussing on Punjabi cinema, we can thoughtfully expect some good stuff down the lane of time. What fascinates me about him the most is that: We can take Kavi Raj out of theater, but we cannot take theatre out of him. Let us wish him further success

It’s official!

Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent 2 gets new release date

W

alt Disney Studios has announced Maleficent: Mistress of Evil will hit theatres on October 18, 2019. The fantasy adventure is moving its release date up by seven months. It had previously been slated to debut on May 29, 2020, reported Variety. The new date pits the second part of ‘Maleficent’ against an untitled film from horror-maker Blumhouse. It will also have to contend with the second weekends of ‘The Adams Family,’ the adaptation of Donna Tartt’s ‘The Goldfinch,’ ‘Zombieland 2,’ and ‘Gemini Man,’ a futuristic thriller that unites Will Smith and Ang Lee. In the film, Angelina Jolie reprises her role as

the villainous enchantress Maleficent. The cast also includes Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville, who appeared in the first instalment, as well as franchise newcomers Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Skrein, Harris Dickinson, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Joachim Rønning (‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’) directs from a screenplay by Linda Woolverton, Micah FitzermanBlue, and Noah Harpster. The first ‘Maleficent’ was a box office smash minting USD 758.5 million globally on a budget of USD 180 million when it released in 2014.

Jennifer Lawrence is engaged to boyfriend Cooke Maroney

J

ennifer Lawrence is engaged! The 28-year-old Oscar winner was spotted with a ring on her finger while enjoying what appeared to be a celebratory dinner with her 34-year-old boyfriend Cooke Maroney, at Raoul’s, a French restaurant in New York City. The actress was seen wearing a cute black dress with white polka dots. A few days earlier, the happy couple was spotted on another date in the West Village, all bundled up to battle freezing temperatures. A source told People magazine in June that the actress was dating Maroney and the two have never shied away from going on dates in public together. Cooke Maroney is the director of New York’s Gladstone gallery. In late June, the couple was photographed enjoying a romantic candlelit dinner in New York City. Known for her roles in films like The Hunger Games series, Silver Linings Playbook, Mother!, and the X-Men series, Lawrence will be seen next in Dark Phoenix in which she’s reprising her role as Raven Darkhölme/Mystique. Lawrence has also won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook in 2012. She’s also the winner of three Golden Globe Awards, a BAFTA award, and seven MTV Movie Awards. Cortsey: ANI

Difficult to look in mirror, see someone double my age: Taapsee Pannu

E

ven as her latest release Badla receives glowing reviews, Taapsee Pannu has little time to celebrate. “When success comes knocking, it’s not the time to get complacent,” says the actor wisely. On her part, she is walking the talk - she has resumed the shooting of Anurag Kashyap’s production, Saand Ki Aankh in Johri, Uttar Pradesh. The Tushar Hiranandanidirected project has Pannu playing Chandro Tomar, one of the country’s oldest women sharpshooters, with Bhumi Pednekar stepping into the shoes of Prakashi Tomar. Acknowledging that biopics are a tricky genre to navigate, Pannu adds that her biggest challenge is to look like a 60-year-old. “Imagine what it feels like to see myself in the mirror and look double my age! My mom was recently on the set and she was amazed to see me. I usually don’t have a habit of looking at the monitor, but I think that people will either love it or loathe

20

it. There won’t be a middle ground.” Stepping into the shoes of Shooter Dadi (as Chandro Tomar is fondly called) has not been an easy journey as Pannu’s muse belongs to a world far removed from hers. “Saand Ki Aankh is the most challenging film of my career. This character has nothing in common with me - neither the struggles nor the background. As someone in my 30s, I can’t comprehend what they were feeling when they were 60. [Fortunately] they are constantly in touch with us and are helping us get the nuances right.” Happy to reunite with Amitabh Bachchan after their courtroom drama Pink (2016), Pannu says that the success of the film only reinstates her faith in good content. “With this, I feel my selection of projects is validated. Badla is an unconventional film with no light moments or songs. It’s usually unlikely for a thriller to do well commercially. Now, I am itching to do a hat-trick with sir.” Cortsey: MID DAY

Parineeti Chopra: I didn’t think of my screen time in Kesari

P

arineeti Chopra plays Akshay Kumar’s love interest in Karan Johar’s production venture Kesari, which is based on the Battle of Saragarhi. It took filmmaker and producer Karan Johar one line and a love song to convince Parineeti Chopra to star in upcoming war film Kesari, the actor revealed on Friday during a media interaction in Mumbai. Parineeti plays Akshay Kumar’s love interest in Kar’s production venture, which is based on the Battle of Saragarhi. The film is helmed by National Award-winning Punjabi director Anurag Singh. “Kesari was that film where I didn’t think about the usual silly things like the screen time, the role and what all needs to be done. Karan called me to

his office and narrated me the film’s one-liner and also the love ballad, which we have in the film and I said yes instantly,” Parineeti Chopra said at the film’s song launch. The actor also shared she is a huge admirer of Anurag Singh’s work and was ready to be even a tree in his film. “I didn’t even have a full narration. All I knew was all these geniuses were making an amazing film and I just wanted to be a part of it so that 50 years from now, I could say I was a part of Kesari. I was so happy. I told Anurag sir, ‘Whatever film you make, I will be a tree in the background but I want to be in it,’” the Kesari actor said. Cortsey: INDIAN EXPRESS

Natural remedies for

dark circles

D

ark circles and puffy eyes, no matter how hard you try to avoid them, they can sometimes creep up when you least expect it. The most obvious reason is lack of sleep. That said, sometimes, it has a lot to do with one’s diet or lifestyle. Eating salty food can cause water retention and lead to puffiness. While conscious efforts can help, if you want to get rid of them stat, these few simple tips and tricks can go a long way.

Cool cucumber Cucumbers have been used for years as a home remedy for puffy eyes. Cucumbers contain antioxi-

dants and flavonoids that help with redness, swelling and irritation. Simply place a cool slice on each eye and sit back for 30 minutes.

a cotton ball into cold milk and squeeze off the excess. Place on eyes to help shrink the under-eye tissue.

Raw potato slices

Tea bags are another popular home remedy. Green and black tea contains caffeine that can constrict the tiny blood vessels in the skin around the eyes. Caffeinated tea also contains tannins that stimulate blood circulation. To make it work, place two tea bags in a mug of hot water. Remove and let the tea bags cool to room temperature and place on eyes for 15-30 minutes. Doing this once or twice a week can help tighten the skin under the eyes, as well as provide soothing benefits.

Try using sliced potatoes in place of cucumbers. They stay cool longer and contain an astringent that helps remove the water from under the eyes. You can also make a finely ground potato poultice by grating raw potato and placing it in a few layers of cheesecloth. Place them over the eyes and reap the benefits.

Milk Whole milk is most commonly used, but soy milk works too. Dip

Green or black tea

Chamomile tea Chamomile tea doesn’t have caffeine, but it does have significant anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. It is used to treat maladies all over the body, so no surprise that it also revives tired, puffy eyes and reduces redness. It can also provide relief for conjunctivitis and pink eye.

Egg whites Beat up an egg white and apply it with a brush or your fingers under the eyes. As it dries, it will tighten and tone the skin. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, then gently rinse. It can also stimulate circulation and reduce inflammation. Cortsey: FEMINA

Will stop acting moment I turn full-fledged director, says

Aamir Khan S

uperstar Aamir Khan says filmmaking does excite him, but currently, he wants to focus on acting. The 54-year-old actor, who made directorial debut with “Taare Zameen Par”, said he will quit acting once he decides to turn full-fledged filmmaker. “I am inclined towards filmmaking and I coincidentally directed ‘Taare Zameen Par’. I have been in love with filmmaking and acting and I can’t alienate the two but what I can say right now is that I began my career as an actor and it excites me. “The moment I become a full-fledged filmmaker I will stop acting. Right now, I don’t want to stop acting, that’s why I am holding back the director inside me,” Aamir told reporters here on Thursday. As a producer, Aamir has backed films like “Lagaan”, “Taare Zameen Par”, “Jaane Tu Yaha Jaane Na”, “Peepli Live”, “Dhobi Ghat”, “Delhi Belly”, “Talaash”, “Dangal” and “Secret Superstar”. The actor said his aim is to support good scripts and making money is not his agenda. “I had not thought at what pace I will make films. Usually, people make films with their production houses for business. That is not our first agenda.

24

APRIL 2019

Creativity is our agenda. Till the time we don’t get a good script, we don’t make it into a film.” When asked if as an actor does he have any Hollywood aspirations, Aamir said he would work in any part of the world if he gets a good opportunity. “For me, as an actor, what is important is what the film is all about and what it is trying to say. It should excite me as an actor. It is not important that it should have a social message. “It does not matter which part of the world it originates from. The actor has announced his next project, “Lal Singh Chaddha”, an official adaptation of Tom Hanks’ 1994 film “Forrest Gump”. He was also in talks for Netflix series on spiritual leader Rajneesh, popularly known among his followers as Osho, but he said the script has not been finalised yet. “Nothing is happening on Osho at the moment. How to fix Acidity problem forever ….

Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Health Coach of University of Victoria

N

owadays, a burning pain- in the lower chest area- known acidity or heartburn, in folk parlance, is happening in you, myself as well as millions of others worldwide. Acid reflux is also known as heartburn, acid indigestion, or pyrosis. It happens when some of the acidic stomach contents go back up into the esophagus. It happens when stomach acid flows back up into the food pipe [ esophagus]. Symptoms: Acid reflux usually produces heartburn, whether it is due to a single episode of overeating or persistent GERD. Heartburn is an uncomfortable burning sensation that occurs in the esophagus and is felt behind the breastbone area. It tends to get worse when lying down or bending over. It can last for several hours and often worsens after eating food. The pain of heartburn may move up toward the neck and throat. Stomach fluid can reach the back of the throat in some cases, producing a bitter or sour taste. If heartburn occurs two or more times a week, it is known as GERD for short. Chronic heartburn can lead to GERD: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is diagnosed when acid reflux occurs more than twice a week. GERD is most common in people on more processed diet. So Western diet being more processed, western countries, have an estimated affected population of 20 to 30 percent . To consume more processed food and acidic in nature is the real cause of acidity. Lifestyle risk factors obesity and smoking also contribute to this malady. Possible Causes are: To help digestion hydrochloric acid [Hcl] is released by the walls of the stomach. Part of this acid content of the stomach flows up into the esophagus, into the gullet, which moves food down from the mouth. Despite the name, heartburn has nothing to do with the heart. Hydrochloric acid, is a strong acid that helps break down food and protect against pathogens such as bacteria. The lining of the stomach is specially adapted to protect it from the powerful acid, but the esophagus is not protected. There is a ring of muscle, the gastroesophageal sphincter, normally acts as a valve that lets food into the stomach but not back up into the esophagus. When this valve fails, and stomach contents are regurgitated into the esophagus back up, the symptoms of acid reflux are felt, such as heartburn. Risk factors: GERD affects people of all ages, sometimes for unknown reasons. Though very often, it is due to a lifestyle factor, but as per medical experts, it can also be due to causes that cannot always be prevented. One cause that is not preventable is a hiatal (or hiatus) hernia also. A hole in the diaphragm allows the upper part of the stomach to enter the chest cavity, sometimes leading to GERD. Other risk factors are: • Obesity, smoking (active or passive), very low levels of physical exercise[ sedentary life style].Medications, including drugs for asthma, calcium-channel blockers, antihistamines, painkillers, sedatives, and antidepressants also create acidity as an adverse effect. Pregnancy

28

APRIL 2019

The American College of Gastroenterology says that over 60 million Americans experience heartburn at least once a month, and at least 15 million as often as daily. Exact figures vary, but diseases resulting from acid reflux are the most common gut complaint dealt by Physicians in every nook and corner of the Universe. can also cause acid reflux due to extra pressure being placed on the internal organs in women in some cases. Some major symptoms of GERD include: • nausea • vomiting • chest or upper abdominal pain • dry, persistent cough • bad breath. • throat problems, such as soreness, hoarseness, or laryngitis (voice box inflammation • dental erosion Risks and complications: Without treatment, GERD can lead to serious complications in the long term, including an increased risk of cancer. Persistent exposure to stomach acid can damage the esophagus, leading to: • Esophagitis: the lining of the esophagus is inflamed, causing irritation, bleeding, and ulceration in some cases • Strictures: damage caused by the stomach acid leads to scar development and difficulties in swallowing, with food getting stuck as it travels down the esophagus • Barrett’s esophagus: a serious complication where repeated exposure to stomach acid causes changes in the cells and tissues lining the esophagus with potential to develop into cancer cells Both esophagitis and Barrett’s esophagus are associated with a higher risk of cancer. Acid Reflex in infants: Most infants “spit up” milk as part of their daily activities. The action of spitting up milk is known as reflux or gastroesophageal reflux. Reflux is perfectly normal, common in infants, and is rarely serious. During pregnancy 30 to 50 % of women experience heartburn during pregnancy, even if they did not have it before. Lifestyle modifications are recommended during pregnancy, such as not eating too late at night and consuming small meals. Any woman who is experiencing severe reflux during pregnancy should speak to her doctor about treatment options. Overweight or Obesity: Added weight increases the pressure between the stomach and esophagus, forcing stomach acid back up. It’s purely mechanical that way. Over 35% people are overweight in North America. That’s probably one of the most important factors. Obesity is a familiar problem for North Americans, and doctors say it’s not hard to imagine that the obesity epidemic has caused a similar surge in acid reflux in the area . Diet plays a big role: Dietary choices may be as effective as using medicines- allopathic or herbal. Choice of Food and dietary habits that have been linked to acidity problem are: • a diet low in dietary fiber- consume at least 30 gm fiber in your daily diet • eating large meals

• consuming chocolate, carbonated drinks, and acidic juices • c affeine • alcohol • a high intake of table salt • lying down within 2 to 3 hours of eating a meal. Stay up at least 40 minutes after eating your meal and drink water after 30 minutes of meal finish time. Lifestyle matters in a big way: Losing weight and stopping smoking will remove two lifestyle risk factors associated with acid reflux. Lifestyle measures that may help include: • i mproving posture, for instance, sitting up straighter •w earing loose clothing • l osing weight if BMI is over 25 i.e. overweight or obese • a voiding increased pressure on your abdomen, such as from tight belts or doing sit-up exercises • b y stopping smoking Treatment: Remedial measures / drug treatments are the most common therapy and are available on prescription and over the counter (OTC). The main treatment medicine options for people who repeatedly experience acidity or acid reflux in GERD are either Proton Pump Inhibitors[ PPIs ] or H2 blockers. PPIs and H2 blockers decrease acid production and reduce the potential for damage caused by acid reflux. These medications are generally safe and effective, but like any prescription drug, they are not appropriate for all people with reflux disease and can cause side effects. PPIs include Omeprazole, Rabeprazole, and Esomeprazole. H2 blockers, include cimetidine, ranitidine, and famotidine. Go for Modified release[MR version] as it works for 24 hrs. whereas regular one works for 8 to 12 hrs. PPIs and H2 blockers decrease acid production and reduce the potential for damage caused by acid reflux. These medications are generally safe and effective, but like any prescription drug, they are not appropriate for all people with reflux disease and can cause side effects. Over the Counter [OTC] remedies for acid reflux: For people who experience heartburn or

Before prescribing medications, many Physicians recommend that patients try to change their lifestyles to keep acid reflux in check. Avoiding spicy or acidic foods, quitting smoking, minimizing caffeine and alcohol and losing weight are some of the changes recommended by the American College of Gastroenterology.

Not eating before bed helps as does raising the head of the bed on blocks by 2 to 3 inches,” said Dr. Randy Wexler, an assistant professor of family medicine at Ohio State University. “If somebody has problems less than two times per week or in certain situations, over-thecounter antacids like Tums are fine,” but more chronic or severe acid reflux may call for other drugs, such as H2 blockers like Zantac or proton pump inhibitors like Nexium and Prilosec. indigestion infrequently, perhaps in association with occasional food and drink triggers, OTC treatments are available to reduce the acidity of the stomach contents. These liquid and tablet formulations are called antacids, and there are scores of brands available, all with similar effectiveness. They may not work for everyone, and any need for regular use should be discussed with your respective Physician. Always remember that antacids provide rapid but short-term relief by reducing the acidity of the stomach contents. They contain chemical compounds such as calcium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, aluminum, and magnesium hydroxide. They can also inhibit nutrient absorption, may lead to deficiencies of vitamins over a time. Alginate drugs such as Gaviscon Gaviscon is probably the best-known heartburn therapy. It has a different mode of action than antacid drugs. Alginate drugs such as Gaviscon differ in composition, but they usually contain an antacid named alginic acid. The alginic acid works by creating a mechanical barrier against the stomach acid, forming a foamy gel that sits at the top of the gastric pool itself. Any reflux is then relatively harmless as it consists of alginic acid and not damaging stomach acid. The active ingredient—alginate—is found naturally in brown algae. Alginate drugs, including Gaviscon, for instance, may cause problems absorbing nutrients. This can lead to malnutrition. If GERD is severe and unresponsive to medical treatment, a surgical intervention known as fundoplication may be needed. Conclusion: For many, a military rich diet- spicy and fried one in particular- alcohol in abundance, weight gain and stress in succession may lead to one thing: heartburn. But new research finds that an increasing number of people struggle with the burning and pressure of surging stomach acid all year long. In one year in USA total number of prescriptions written for a 36o million people is A new study reports that the number of people who frequently experience symptoms of heartburn, also called acid reflux, has almost doubled in the last 10 years. Acid reflux can mean more than just discomfort -- too much surging stomach acid can create a web of wounds in the esophagus, causing food to get stuck on its way down. Research also has connected acid reflux with an increased risk of esophageal cancer, particularly if it is chronic and left untreated. Women seemed to be more affected by the disease than men, and acid reflux became more common in people of both sexes as they progress toward middle age. In 2006, a study from the Mayo Clinic found that 5 percent of people with acid reflux developed Barrett’s esophagus, a condition that may be a precursor of esophageal cancer.

A Girl in a Whirl Contd. from previous issue (Part 29) siblings to Canada for permanent immigration. There wasn’t even a remote chance that I could sponsor my parents and siblings to Canada. If I thought of a match for Meenu or Sunny, nobody in my circle was suitable for them. How great that would be if my parents, Meenu and Sunny were here, but how? I had no answer to it. I remembered what the church priest had said. A woman would go through so terrible pains giving birth to a baby that it would be like her own rebirth. As my baby-delivery time was nearing, I was getting more scared of the pains I would go through while delivering my baby. Then I thought my mom had also given me a birth. So many children are born everyday. God makes everything all right. I missed my mom very much in that condition. Jasvir, my friend, was helping me a lot. My bhua also helped me a lot at that time. The time came, and I gave birth to a girl. Men can never realize how hard it is to carry a baby in womb for nine months and give birth to a baby. After a few days of my daughter’s birth, my bhua took my daughter and me to a Sikh temple and had a priest to pray for us. She also

asked the priest read a hukum navan (a set of holy lines) from Sri Guru Granth Sahib and get the first letter for my daughter’s name. It was ‘N’. Bhua’s grand children named my daughter Nancy. I, mom, dad, Meenu and Sunny liked this name very much. There was a pleasant hustle and bustle at my basement then. Bhua frequently brought her grand children to see Nancy as her grand children had summer break from school. Children here have great excitement to see and play with a very young baby. They also had many pictures of Nancy on their phones as well as my IPhone. 32. Ties on the worst trot The other day mom told me that Raj and Jassi were recalling me a lot Mom had shared with them my entire story. That’s why Jassi had had a love marriage. Her parents didn’t like the boy, but she had obstinately married him. I took the telephone numbers of both, Raj and Jassi. I called Jassi first and congratulated her for she had married a boy of her choice. She sounded very happy. I also talked to Raj. There was a marriage-tie offer to Raj from Canada. The boy was in Toronto. After learning my story, her parents were worried and scared to accept the marriage-tie for Raj. I advised them to investigate everything properly before going ahead. I wished Raj wouldn’t face the same situations that

I had had to. I told her about my daughter Nancy. She asked me to email Nancy’s photos. Neither I had a computer, nor did I know how to use it properly. Bhua brought an old desktop and a table from her house. Her fourteen-year-old granddaughter, Emily, made my email and taught me how to use it. I also learned how to upload pictures and send to Emily’s email. She also taught me how to use Facebook and WhatsApp. She also taught me how to upload and download pictures. I sent Raj several pictures of Nancy and mine. After learning how to use a computer, I began spending my time pretty happily. Nancy had changed my life completely. I had no problem of money. I was getting maternity benefits. I was also receiving legal support from Sam. One day, I got a call from my counselor that Sam wanted divorce from me. He had sent some papers to my counselor through his lawyer. I felt a terrible shock as I was going to be a divorcee soon. A disgusting title! My life had gone through so many phases in just one and a half years. I kept crying the whole day. I neither talked to anyone nor did I take any call. I had switched off my phone. I wanted to live alone with my sorrows.

On a daily average, two-year olds were in front of screens for about 2.5 hours per day, three-year olds got 3.5 hours and five-year olds used screens for about 1.5 hours, in part because many had started school. “The Canadian Paediatric Society’s recommendation for kids age two to five is that they spend no more than one hour per day watching high-quality programming,” Madigan said. High quality means with a learning component, like Sesame Street, and, in a perfect world, the parent sharing that screen time with the children, she added. “Elmo doesn’t talk back, but par-

ents can provide that feedback loop that helps kids learn.”. The research also suggests that watching an activity does not translate into being able to perform that activity in real Life An hour before you close your eyes, you don’t have a screen in front of you. No screens in the bedroom, period. It’s a no-screen zone,”. “No devices at breakfast, lunch and dinner tables. We are going to focus on each other, we are going to respect each other, we are going to talk to each other.”. Even Learning Blocks on Screen is a 2 Dimension event which does not transform in to real blocks Learning which is a 3 Dimensional thing. Parents need to lead by example, she said, including encourag-

ing quality time online. “There Should be productivity screen time, not zombie screen time. Looking at a screen, flicking your finger up, looking at and liking the next picture, that’s zombie time,”. But once homework, chores and any responsibilities are complete, let the kids enjoy screen time. They’ve earned it. One hour per day of High Quality Screen Time under parental Supervision and also involvement can be the goal. Dance with your child or explain the Learning program your child is watching. “When you’re co-viewing, especially with young kids, there’s a dampening effect in terms of its impact on children’s development,” Madigan said. “So it’s OK to watch screens and use screens, but it’s best if that’s done in an interactive way with caregivers and young children co-viewing together, and then there’s limits on it There should be No Screen Time till Age 2 except brief face time with Close Family such as Grand Parents. The back portion of eye called Retina takes up to 2 years to fully develop or be functional. “Just like we limit the amount of junk food we give to kids, we also need to limit the amount of screen time, because both can have consequences. Nature Time is the best. Spend time in outdoor in Nature as much as Possible.

Happy Couples: How to Keep Your Relationship Healthy? Love is the foundation of every relationship but it takes more to keep it healthy. To make your relationship last and keep it healthy and strong, both partners should put in equal efforts. There are going to arguments and disagreements but you should be able to solve them without biting each other’s heads off. 3. Give your partner personal space Humans want closeness but they also want their own space. Cuddle up on some mornings but on other days, get on with your schedule, so neither of you feel pricked.

Ritika Tiwari Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist

Here are eight ways to your relationship healthy and become a happy couple: 1. Learn to accept and appreciate It is in human nature to make mistakes. You cannot expect yourself or your partner to be the best version of themselves at all times. If your partner is being wrong, use gentle words and constructive criticism to tell it to them. Make sure to tell them that you are always there whenever they need you. 2. Stay playful The secret to a long-lasting relationship is doing fun things together. Take your partner to the movies or drive across town to a new restaurant. If you are feeling defensive about something your partner said, reply using a joke instead of some rude words. Physical affection is important in every relationship. It doesn’t mean you have start making love every change you get. Give random kisses, hold hands, and give hugs as it releases feel good hormones and keeps the two of you close.

4. Use the AAA plan The AAA plan by Mira Kirshenbaum, author of The Weekend Marriage, stands for apology, affection, and a promise of action. If you hurt your partner, apologise to

them before matters get worse, show affection like a kiss or a hug, and promise that you won’t repeat the mistake. 5. Start a tradition Every couple has a tradition, which shows that they are interested in keeping the relationship alive. Go on dates on Saturday night,

plan a weekend trip once every three months, take birthday trips, and plan random surprises to show your affection. Both partners should put in equal efforts as it develops a sense of understanding between a two. 6. Always be supportive If your partner is starting a new business or taking up on a new habit, encourage and support them. The key is to believe in your partner and provide guidance in every way possible. If your partner is working over time, help with the dishes, put the children to bed, and give them a nice massage in the night. 7. Show vulnerability You don’t have to be strong all the time in front of your partner. Showing vulnerability strengthens emotional intimacy between the two of you and helps to understand each other’s strengths, weaknesses, fears, and phobias. Don’t shy away from asking for help whether it is helping with work or coping up with stress. Never miss an opportunity to show how much you love them. Bring them flowers, favorite ice cream, or take them to random dinners at their favorite restaurant.

Salman Khan to produce a wedding drama with Nushrat Bharucha

S

alman Khan started his film production company Salman Khan Films in 2011. Since then he has produced several films featuring other actors. For example, he launched Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty with Hero, Aayush Sharma and Warina Hussain with Loveyatri and by the end of this month, he will be introducing Zaheer Iqbal and Pranutan Bahl in Notebook. And now, according to the latest buzz, after Notebook, Salman Khan is gearing for his next as a producer, a wedding drama set in a small town.

According to a report in Mumbai Mirror, the movie will star Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety actress Nushrat Bharucha. The report states that the movie is in the casting stage and Raaj Shandilya, who is directing Ayushmann Khurrana and Nushrat’s Dream Girl is brought on board as the dialogue writer of the film. Divulging the details about the film, a source told Mumbai Mirror, “It’s a love story set in a small town that revolves around a wedding. The film will go on the floors in the next few months and will be shot in the outskirts of Delhi.”

As an actor, Salman Khan’s next is going to be Bharat, which will hit the screens on Eid this year. Yesterday, Salman also announced Dabangg 3 and revealed that the movie will go on floors on April 1 for a December release. While he didn’t reveal the release date, speculations are rife that he might clash with Ranbir Kapoor starrer Brahmastra or Arjun Kapoor starrer Panipat. Or he might go the Simmba way and release his film on Birthday, a week after the release of Brahmastra. Cortsey: TIMES NOW

Why is education so important in our life? Why some of the countries could become developed because the basic education up to Grade 12 is provided – for free-- by the respective Govt. and the standard of education is maintained par excellence. Asian subcontinent has around 40 % of the worlds’ resources, but this area is still not developed, because we are lacking in providing education to our children who are our future. Unfortunately, all of our current generation of children do not attend school.

ducation is indeed a quintessential part of our lives. It helps us to attain success in any walk of life. Education is important for the personal, social and economic development of any nation. Education is critical to live with happiness and prosperity. Education guide a human to fight for success in life: Education empowers minds and helps develop logic. It enables us to conceive and perceive logical thoughts and ideas. It helps us in making logical life decisions. Education is not about doing a degree, it is about how you can live gracefully on your own. Education helps to become successful students, parents, entrepreneurs, doctors, engineers, pilots and to cap it all, honest citizens. Being in contact with an educated person and having an intelligent conversation with him expands knowledge base and introduces a certain creativity and joy in the mind. Education makes the national development process a fast one: Education develops a good political ideology. The standard of living of the citizens of a country is largely dependent on the level of education they are able to acquire. Parents, siblings and teachers – being very import-also impart priceless knowledge about ethics and morals right from the beginning at a tender mind stage so that these qualities stay with him for his entire life in the form of prerequisites. Initial education begins at home: How we behave-as a child, tween, teen or young adult- with our parents and how much regard we have for our elders, peers and juniors, is a direct result of our initial education in our childhood days. So, it wouldn’t be

Developing countries can become developed only if every child in the country get educated in a meaningful manner. This can only make a nation of intellectual minds and where vertical growth will be the only possible outcome. For this to happenas day follows night- the role of a father, a mother and a teacher is of paramount importance

throws at them.

According to my own consciousness, based on my experiences, I believe that a real educated person is one who is able to adapt to his situations as per the need of the hour. He should be able to utilize his skills and his education to overcome, inter- day and intra- day difficult obstacles in any area of his life so that he can take the correct decisions in succession. That is what I believe make a person educated in true sense of the word. wrong to say that a person’s primary education begins at his home wherein a child learns behavior, morality, and respect parameters. As the child grows older, his ambitions and desires grow bigger and parents try their best to provide him the best educational environment to make his dreams come true. Rapid commercialization of education sector: If you look at the existing educational system today, you will notice that education has been reduced to an exchange of instructions and information and nothing more nothing less. Whereas in earlier times the motive of education was to infuse good values and morals also in an individual’s consciousness. Today we have drifted away from this ideology because of the rapid commercialization in the education sector. Parents sacrifice their today so that their children can have a better tomorrow. But when parents need help, from their children, in the last phase of their life, then all not fortunate. Lack of moral values in children is the culprit. That is why the institute of marriage and children there of is waning in some parts of the world. Education scene in this Modern Era: The following points, shed light in what way is the importance of an education is perceived in the modern era: • a child is pushed into a school at the tender age of 3 where the child goes through a mindless routine. It is not that the parents

The mind once enlightened with education cannot again become dark. In fact, this light enlightens the whole Universe by preventing the World at large to stay away from the path of cocky ignorance to miserable uncertainty. want him to attain some knowledge; it is due to the “demonstrative effect”. Since others are doing it, let me do also, is the mere thinking. •A ll of you will agree, the market for education has gone very competitive. Similarly, the most prevalent psychology among students today is to fight intense competition for a certain degree to get a certain job. Resultantly, education has become highly commercialized and almost like a business today, with institutes charging very high fees for their degrees which promise good placements because they have “tie-ups” with the companies. But still many of them are leaving their jobs after 3-4 months or most of them are not satisfied or fire from the job. • In this age of vying competition, educational institutions are spending lot of money on marketing and advertising during admission times to entice new admissions. So sometimes people are not influenced by the teachers and the quality of teaching but are influenced by the advertisements and promotional campaigns being run by the institute. • Since the market has gone global and every country is like a city on the map of world, today the sole objective of getting an education has been reduced to earning money and nothing more. The point I want to drive home is the fact that we are getting bookish knowledge along with a degree in the end, which is done so that we can get a certain job. What is more important is to make use of our education in a way that unleashes our creativity and eventually brings behavioral changes in us for the greater good of mankind. In present times, there are innumerable methods of getting what we call education. But the students are still not knowledgeable enough to face the real challenges that life

Problems associated with the modern educated society today and its impact: • Young students are spending lot of money on their education today, but many of them fail to get or retain a decent job. • Society today is well educated and modernized to a great extent, but many are still superstitious. • Though many are educated and aware that cleanliness is essential to prevent diseases, yet we see heaps of garbage lying around everywhere. • If we are educated and know very well that certain politicians are corrupt, why do we still vote for them into powerful positions and then become submissive to them? Parental attitude towards education is most important: They are the first influence when a child is born and they inculcate or impart good values, morals, and ethics in their child from the very beginning. Parents try to develop good habits in their children about respecting elders and supporting them in their old age. It is heart breaking to see some people sending their old and ailing parents to old age homes when they don’t want to take their responsibility. Conclusion: To lead a good life and to get the spiritual and material happiness that lasts for a life time, it is absolutely essential to get educated. Only education can help our society to progress further and education is the only element that is equally significant for all of us. Education teach us how to think, not what to think. The task of the Govt. is not to cut down jungles, but to irrigate deserts. We need to educate the minds. But always remember, educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all. Needless to say, “the mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled and rekindled.” Education produce a mindset without fears. When the children of a country have a fertile mind and a good heart -always a formidable combo -with a literate tongue and a mightier pen to support, then that nation is bound to grow and register her supremacy. Educate the World, Modificate the World

“Feline Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)”

F

Dr.H.BhullarDVM

52

APRIL 2019

eline Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), is a handful of words put together; however, what do they mean? HCM is the most common heart disease seen in cats. As its name suggests, it is a heart condition in which swellings

are seen in different areas of the heart. This can cause changes that can affect the cat’s overall health. Male cats are more commonly seen to have this condition over female cats. Comparatively, it is very rare to see this disease of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy occur in dogs. The major signs that your cat will display with HCM are open mouth breathing, weight loss, cyanosis (blue discoloration) and increased breathing. Congestive heart failure is a very common effect that can occur due to HCM. When you present your pet to your veterinarian, he or she may wish to conduct a few diagnostic tests in order to ensure that your cat is experiencing this heart disease. Typically, veterinarians will perform thoracic auscultation, in which they will listen to your cat’s chest area with a stethoscope. Chest radiographs,

LIFESTYLE

sports

an echocardiogram or other various tests may also be performed to confirm the diagnosis. Stabilization for your pet would be the main focus of starting treatment. Avoiding any further stress, by enforcing cage rest and gentle handing would be recommended. Based on your pet’s individual case, your veterinarian may wish to provide supplemental oxygen or certain diuretics, if needed. In the case of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, fluids are often contraindicated and not suggested to be given. These mentioned fluids can cause more harm than good towards helping your pet’s state of health. Healing options will vary when tackling either acute treatment or chronic treatment of HCM. Based on your pet’s diagnostic results, your veterinarian will have a better picture of which treatment plan is best for your cat’s health management. There are certain breeds of cats, which are genetically predisposed to developing HCM, compared to others. The most commonly documented breeds for such predisposition are Maine Coons and Ragdolls. However, despite the more commonly mentioned breeds, others are still susceptible to acquiring this cardiac disease. One way of preventing this disease, to progress out of hand, is by conducting a genetic screening test on your pet, beforehand. This test would look for something specifically called ‘MyBPC mutations’. If they are present in your pet, it would be recommended to set up an appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible, in order to educate yourself properly on how to best help your pet through this process. Client compliance in such conditions goes a very long way in helping to effectively manage the health of your pet with this disease. Such compliance can significantly affect the prognosis status of your cat with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.

Reason behind back pain in women and how to overcome it

charge This International Women’s Day take charge of your health. Whether you’re a working woman or a housewife, massive workloads and long working hours, take a toll on your body. Your spinal cord, which is the pillar of your body, will be the most affected- back pain being one of the leading symptoms. Women of different age groups experience back pain for reasons ranging from gradual wear and tear of bone and muscles to hormone level fluctuation, menstruation, pregnancy, and degenerative diseases at an advanced age. “Back pain can be debilitating and life-changing. Home remedies such as hot and cold compress and pain killers only delay the right treatment. The pain usually returns after a short while,” said Dr Neha Narula, Senior Spine Specialist, QI Spine Clinic. “If you have a back pain that is recurrent in nature or doesn’t improve even after taking rest, consult a spine specialist before it’s too late,” she added. Women of different age groups suffer from back pain for different

reasons. Following are some causes and tips to help overcome it:

weight backpacks- pack them using the right technique.

If you’re in your 20’s In order to avoid developing back pain at a young age, it is important to maintain the right posture. Avoid slouching, sitting in one place for a long period of time, limit the use of gadgets, especially mobile phones. Use laptop stands and ergonomic furniture if you have to work for long hours. Tips: Warm up before exercising, utilise the right techniques while working out, avoid high heels and tight clothes, and don’t carry over-

If you’re in your 30’s Bone degeneration starts in your 30’s. It is a normal biological process but improving the back muscles to prevent axial overload can delay the process. Tips: Maintain the right posture while sitting, standing, bending (while picking up things or children) or lifting weights. Take care of your spine during pregnancy. Bone resorption (calcium homeostasis) in lactating women results in bone loss- your basic nutri-

If you’re in your 40’s, 50’s and 60’s After menopause, the rate of bone degeneration increases. This leads to a loss in bone mass (osteoporosis). Your back muscles weaken, increasing pressure on your spine, causing nerve impingement, the narrowing of the spinal canal (stenosis) or bone fuse. Other common conditions include disc protrusion and the development of bone spurs. Tips: Exercise to build muscle strength so that your spine can carry your body weight better. Take food and health supplements to compensate for bone mass loss. If you have back pain, check with your doctor. “Women’s sex hormone- estrogen, plays a significant role in causing musculoskeletal degenerative diseases. Lack of it accelerates bone degeneration, post menopause for which women experience lower back pain more often.” – Dr Neha Narula, Senior Spine Specialist, QI Spine Courtsey:MID DAY Clinic.

Fashion tips on how to

embrace your curves I

t’s time for all of us to make a resolution to not fall prey to body figure stereotyping and make it all about self-love. Not trying to hide behind frumpy clothes that do you no justice is one way to do that. Finding out and understanding your body type is something to be thankful for, however making it a stereotype is not. So all the apple body-shaped woman, pear bodyshaped and also the full-sized hourglass body-shaped ladies, stop being used to the embarrassing yourself, rather start embracing yourself! With numerous brands breaking the beauty taboo with real-body campaigns and policies we celebrate every woman with perfection. If you are curvy, it is important to dress according to your size. Say goodbye to every oversized clothes and slide into the outfits with the

makes the viewer’s eye move up to down, or vice versa, forming one uninterrupted line, which makes you look tall and slim. If you’re looking to enhance those curves, then opt for a bodycon dress in the right fabric like jersey. You can also wear ensembles that have lines narrowing at the waist and spreading away at the bust and the hips. The lines can be in the form of a print, stitches, pleats, etc. A dress with a plunging V-neck and a cinched waist which then flairs out below, also gives the illusion of an hourglass figure.

right fit that will hide your problem areas and highlight the right angles of your frame. Styling from top to bottom can bring a vast change in your look. Have a look at some great style tips for real girls who felt too voluptuous to wear certain items, and we’re here to blow those myths right out of the water.

The hem of the jeans should be at the ankle, or (even better) an inch or two below. If you are not of average height, buy your clothes, specifically the bottoms from a retailer that gives you perfect length options. Well, hems can be tricky sometimes but the best thing is to not to have a clue about it and find a tailor with a good eye, trust them and learn as you go.

LINES AND SHAPES You need your first impression to be fab-worthy, and it is all about your lines and shapes that draw the eye. One great trick is to wear monochrome ensembles. This

THE RULE OF THE HEM Knowing where hems or borders should be on your body can help you lengthen the frame. A kneelength skirt, for example, should sit just right under the knee, never around the biggest part of the calf.

oversized dresses. Instead, pick the clothes that are body-skimming (not too tight) and show your curvy side. Say no to a giant t-shirt, but a maxi or kaftans that skim the curves and have some belt at the waist is cool. If you want an easy profile, or if you got your favourite graphic on a tee or tunic then pair it with tighter trousers or jeans and make it to your advantage.

MIND THE SHOES It’s always a head-to-toe thing and what you put on your feet that matters. Pointy tips and low heels can make you look slim, whether you are pairing it with a skirt or a pair of pants. Try to find a shoe with a vamp the ends at the top of your toes, other than halfway around. Shoe styles with low vamps include ballet flats and pumps. High-vamp shoes include Mary Janes and

loafers.

VOTE FOR LAYERS Contrary to stereotypes, layering doesn’t necessarily add volume. Instead, it sometimes gives your body a definition. Wearing a tank top with a pretty cardigan instead of one-piece dress or T-shirt can help to underline your shape. Ensure though that you don’t layer with bulky garments.

EMBRACE YOUR HIGH WAIST High-waisted pants are your companion. They help tuck in folds and fat and minimize muffin tops since they end at the slimmest part of the waist. Ensure they’re long, finishing at the lower leg or underneath, following the rule of the hemline.Dress to make yourself feel good, and you will make heads turn! Courtsey: FEMINA

SAY ‘NO’ TO OVERSIZED CLOTHES Just beanpoles look great in larger than the average dress size! Don’t add volume to your body by wearing
