t our Surrey orthodontic clinic, patients typically ask almost immediately how much does Invisalign cost or how much do braces cost? Unfortunately, there isn’t one set number for the cost of orthodontic treatment because it depends on a number of factors including the severity of the case, the duration of treatment and the type of braces or appliances the patient chooses. However, most treatments fall within a typical price range, which we’ll use for simplicity’s sake and to give you an idea of how the cost of Invisalign or braces (without insurance) compares to other common life expenses. Since orthodontic treatment typically takes between one and two years, to make a fair comparison, all of the expenses will be based on 18 months worth of bills. • Average Cost of Orthodontic Treatment o Traditional Metal Braces – $3,000 – $7,000 o Clear Braces – $4,000 – $8,000 o Lingual Braces – $8,000 – $10,000 o Invisalign – $4,000 – $7,400 • Average Mortgage Payments – $32,778 Currently, the average cost of a home in Canada is $508,097. Based on a 5-year fixed rate mortgage at 2.34% using a 20% down payment over a 25-year amortization period, the monthly cost would be $1,821. Multiply that by 18 months and you get a whopping $32,778. • Food Costs – $12,327 According to government statistics last compiled in 2014, the average household food expenditures in British Columbia were $8,218 per year.

• Car Payments – $10,260 The average monthly payment on a new vehicle in Canada is $570 per month. • Rent of a One-Bedroom Apartment in Surrey, BC – $13,914 The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Surrey comes out to $773 a month. • Electricity Bill – $1,620 Residential electricity bills for people in BC average $90 a month. • Dog Ownership Costs – $2,055 According to the BC SPCA, the annual cost of owning a dog is $1,370.

APRIL 2017

• Starbucks Grande Latte – $2,162.63 A grande latte from Starbucks averages about $3.95 in the Lower Mainland. If you purchased one every day for 18 months it would come out to approximately $2,162.63 • Tuition & Housing at the University of British Columbia – $18,669 According to the University of British Columbia’s cost estimator, 18 months of tuition, student fees, books and a shared room on campus (not including a meal plan or any expenses) for a Bachelor of Science degree for a British Columbia resident would be roughly $18,669.

/saentertainment_news_magazine

/ansalmedia

•Recreation – $6,270 Canadian government statistics showed that the average household spent $4,180 per year on recreation in 2014. The thing to keep in mind when considering the cost of braces or Invisalign is that the results of a healthy, gorgeous smile can last a lifetime and have a huge positive impact on your health and self-confidence. Plus, at Aura Orthodontics, we make affording orthodontic treatment realistic with our flexible payment options and interest-free monthly payment plans. We even accept insurance if your plan covers it. Contact us today for a free consultation and see how we can make straightening your teeth work for your budget.

s I met Mr. Sahib Thind, Founder president of Professor Mohan Singh Memorial Foundation of Canada, who landed in Canada 33 years back, I found him excited to talk about the great work done by his foundation under his horsemanship. When asked to get myself appraised of the good work done by the foundation, he explained with alacrity and pleasure as follows: “ The mission statement of this beloved foundation, Headquartered in Surrey BC, is to Protect the human rights, bridge cultural diversity and promote cultural harmony among the South Asian diaspora and the world at large” “Gadri Babian Da Mela,” To do so the foundation hold cultural events such as the “Gadri Babian Da Mela,” which is well attended by govt. officials and diaspora from every strata of society for the last 21 years. Folk Singers, dancers, entertainers (from US, India and other parts of Canada) and local dignitaries and politicians attend this function. This festival typically hosts approx. 70,00 guests every year including Prime Minister[s ] and Federal Cabinet Ministers, Bollywood and Punjabi entertainment superstars, and many foreign and

local dignitaries who being the participants bask in the glory of enriched heritage and traditions of Indian culture. Members of the Foundation include current and past members of Parliament, and Provincial and municipal leaders.

Foundation’s role on the Komagata Maru Injustice In 2002 this foundation initiated a petition calling for a respectful apology from the Canadian Government of the day as well as successive governments. The same was denied in succession. After relentless fighting of over 2 decades along with our community,

A hero is someone who has given his or her life to a cause bigger than oneself. The price of victory is always high but so are the rewards beyond an iota of doubt. Surinder Shaun Kochhar in toto, the Government was finally pursued to apologize in the House of Commons on May 18, 2016 for the diabolical wrong done 102 year back. With this the dark chapter

Only those, like Sahib Thind, who work with constancy to purpose and honesty of commitment, can render sincere and selfless service to the community. And by sacrificing their today so that our children can have a better tomorrow, such type of people definitely experience the deepest joy.

Over thousand people attended a Community Safety Forum, that was held on March 18, 2017 at W. J . Mouat School in Abbotsford. Sgt. Jag Khosa of CFSEU-BC delivered an End Gang Life presentation to raise awareness on early signs of gang involvement and also to educate parents on how to intervene before its too late. The fact that over thousand people showed up on a Saturday evening, to this meeting, at such a short notice was indicative of the fact that community no longer wants to sit on the sidelines. They want to engage and assist the police in curbing the ongoing gang violence on our streets. Stage was conducted by Mr. Harjit Singh Gill and this event by Mr. Sarabjit Singh of Gurdwara Kalgidhar Sahib.

Prosperous with the bountiful produce they look forward to celebrating Baisakhi with all eagerness. For the predominant Sikh population of Punjab Baisakhi is one the biggest festival as it marks the foundation day of Khalsa Panth by the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. Sikh community located anywhere in the world celebrate Baisakhi by participating in the special prayer meets and Baisakhi processions. Baisakhi Celebrations by Farmers In the villages of Punjab and Haryana, the day of Baisakhi is full of colors and vibrancy. Cries of “Jatta aayi Baisakhi reverberate in the skies as gaily-dressed men and women move towards the fields to celebrate the occasion. High point of Baisakhi celebrations in villages is the performance of traditional folk dance bhangra and gidda by men and women respectively. The dance is simple in movement but is extremely energetic and is performed ingroups on the beat of dhol.

Baisakhi Celebrations as a Thanksgiving Day. After taking an early bath in ponds or rivers people visit temples or gurdwaras to express gratitude to the Almighty for the bountiful harvest and pray for prosperity and good times in future.

At several places in Punjab colourful Baisakhi Fairs are also organized to celebrate the day. People participate in these fairs with lots of enthusiasm and charm. Major attractions of Baisakhi Fairs are the bhangra and gidda performances besides wrestling bouts, singing and acrobatics. Performance of folk instruments - vanjli and algoza is also quite

popular. Food stalls and shops selling trinkets make Baiskhi Melas even more joyful. Baisakhi Celebrations by Sikhs

Sikhs celebrate this very important day of their religion with joy and devotion. They take an early bath, wear new clothes and visit the neighborhood gurdwara (Sikh place of worship) to participate in the special prayer meet marked for the day. After a special ardas of kirtans (religious songs) and discourses kada prasad (sweetened semolina) is distributed amongst all present. Later, people sit in rows to relish the langar or community lunch prepared and served by kar sevaks or volunteers. Major celebrations of Baisakhi are organized at Golden Temple, Amritsar.

Most Sikhs strive to visit Golden Temple on the occasion. The Khalsa Panth was founded in Anandpur Sahib in the year 1699. Another high point of Baisakhi celebrations by Sikhs is the Baisakhi procession or nagar kirtan carried though the city under the leadership of Panj Piaras or the Five Beloved Ones. Men, women and children alike participate in the Baiskhi processions with enthusiasm. Mock duels, bands playing religious tunes and performance of bhangra and gidda dance make Baisakhi processions quite colourful and enchanting. Later in the evening, people exchange greetings with friends and relatives usually with a box of sweets or other traditional gifts.

Farmers also celebrate Baisakhi

ercedes-Benz Surrey showcased their latest commercial van offerings at the recent Construction Expo at Cloverdale Agriplex over the past weekend. The Construction Expo featured the latest offering in Canadian construction, from solar panels, portable green houses to next-generation artificial turfs. The Mercedes-Benz Vans offering with the Sprinter full size cargo van and the Metris mid sized cargo van were a big hit at the show. Though Mercedes-Benz Vans have been available in Canada for close to 10 years, many construction professionals are unaware of the value proposition. There is a mis-conception that Mercedes-Benz Vans are expensive to own and maintain, but in fact the Sprinter van has been ranked by Vincentric as the

‘Raabta’ isn’t visually inspired by ‘300’: Sushant Singh Rajput

ollywood actress Anushka Sharma says she loves sunglasses as an accessory. “I ove sunglasses. While it most definitely is a fashion accessory, I believe for those who travel frequently or step out everyday, sunglasses are a necessity more than a fashion accessory,” Anushka, who has been roped in as the ambassador for eyewear brand Polaroid, told IANS over e-mail from Mumbai. The 28-year-old actress, who is gearing up for the release of her upcoming production “Phillauri”, also said she has a personal sense of style which is comfortable and chic. And she feels teaming the right pair of sunglasses outfit only adds value to its look. Celebrities and companies have often been blamed for faulty products. Does she think it’s okay to blame a celebrity?

18

“I think it’s easier to blame anyone — be it a company, a brand or a celebrity — than to try resolve a problem systematically,” said Anushka, adding that she is endorsing Polaroid for its “reliability and quality”. A new brand campaign is being launched with Anushka on International Women’s Day, introducing a fresh, strong perspective of selfconfidence that personifies the woman of today. “I salute the power of women across the globe,” she said.

ollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput on Tuesday rubbished rumours that his upcoming film “Raabta” is “visually” inspired in parts by Hollywood blockbuster “300”. At the launch of a new campaign, “Behtar India” by NDTV and DHFL Pramerica Life Insurance, the actor who plays the lead in the romantic drama said, “No it isn’t inspired.” Industry hearsay is that Dinesh Vijan’s “Raabta” that travels between two eras seeks inspiration from Hollywood fantasy war drama “300”. “I do films because I love acting. You put me on stage and give me just Rs 500 I would love to act. Even if I can’t do theatre I can gladly do short films. Acting is something else for me,” the “Kai Po Che!” actor said about his passion for acting. Brand ambassador, Sushant Singh Rajput also spoke about “Behtar India” Campaign that aims at mobilising students, ordinary citizens and corporates to join a nationwide movement that focuses on health, hygiene, and environment. “When you become a popular face and people start giving attention on what you say or do then it is important to do things that you are convinced with. That’s why I am associated with this campaign. I think this is high time for all of us to understand how important it is,” he stated. “Raabta” also stars Kriti Sanon in the lead role and it’s scheduled to release on June 9.

Natalie Portman welcomes home a baby girl named Amalia Millepied

T

he Oscar-winning 35-year-old actor Natalie Potman, who was last seen on the silver screen playing the role of former First Lady, Jackie Kennedy, gave birth to a baby girl named Amalia on February 22. The statement by her representative to E! News said, “Natalie Portman and her husband Benjamin Millepied welcomed a baby girl, Amalia Millepied, on February 22. Mother and baby are happy and healthy.” Portman and French choreographer Benjamin Millepied married in 2012. They had worked together in the criticallyacclaimed film Black Swan. The couple is also parents to their 5-year-old son Aleph. The star made her baby bump debut in September at the Venice Film Festival while promoting her movies Planetarium and Jackie. She was a part of Vanity Fair’s shoot where she was featured beautifully with her baby bump by photographer Annie Leibovitz. She also wrote a piece for The New York Times’ T Magazine about how parenthood had changed her as a person. She wrote, “[Parenthood] made me much calmer under stress, because there’s that weird parent thing you develop, that when things get really bad, your voice gets calm and your blood pressure slows, and you can make everything okay again.” Although she attended the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards while expecting, Portman skipped the Oscars ceremony that was held recently, even though she was nominated, due to her delivery. She was, however, seen reading mean tweets on screen as a part of ‘Mean tweets — Oscars Edition by Jimmy Kimmel live’ that was screened at the ceremony.

It’s all in the

bag

No matter what the occasion, here are five arm candies that will stand by you... THE CLASSY CLUTCH Best for: A date night, dance outing or a wedding reception. Hues’ who: Pick a gold or silver box clutch. But black and gold is the most versatile. Checklist: Make sure it’s roomy enough to carry your essentials money, ID, lipstick, keys, mobile phone. Buy a clutch bag with a removable shoulder or crossbody chain. THE ADULT BACKPACK Best for: Offduty bag for days when you don’t feel like

burdening your shoulder. Hues’ who: Soft leather backpacks in neutral colours are classic. For a holiday vibe, pick one in a floral print. Checklist: Useful pockets make it perfect for both work and travel. THE SATCHEL Best for: Workplace. A spacious, well-organised formal bag, in a durable material like allweather faux leather, serves well as an office bag. Hues’ who: Pick neutral colours like black, chocolate brown or dark brown. “Never pick a light-coloured workbag, it isn’t easy to keep it clean,” says designer Pria Kataria Puri. Checklist: Make sure it has a good number of pockets to accommodate everything but the kitchen sink. THE XXL TOTE Best for:

/saentertainment_news_magazine

A last-minute weekend trip! “Classic, effortless, and perennial, a mammoth tote bag is a musthave,” says Parekh. Hues’ who: A canvas tote (any hue). Checklist: The open-top magnet style comes in handy for loading the bag easily. For a polished appeal, opt for one in structured leather. THE COOL CROSSBODY Best for: Casual outings, a fun brunch or a stroll around a park. Hues’ who: “Choose from funky shapes and bright colours. Denim slings with embroidery and tasselled bags are in,” says stylist Devangi Nishar Parekh. Checklist: Half-moon bags spell casual chic. BAG BASICS While leather remains a classic, velvet adds instant richness. Go for metallic. It has made a huge comeback. Animal motifs are popular this season - from oversized elephants, tigers, panthers to birds. Floral and foliage prints are feminine and flirty. Geometric patterns look edgy.

Nuts cut risk of cancer, help weight loss

C

onsuming 20 grams or a handful of hazelnuts and walnuts and peanuts a day can cut risk of heart disease, cancer and premature death. Nuts are rich in heart-healthy polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats, which lower LDL or “bad” cholesterol; plus, they are a good source of phytosterols, compounds that help lower blood cholesterol, reports CNN. A 2016 analysis of 29 studies and up to 8,19,000 people revealed that 20 grams of nuts a day —equivalent to a handful — can cut people’s risk of heart disease by nearly 30 per cent, their risk of cancer by 15 per cent and their risk of premature death by 22 percent. In fact, the research suggests that nuts may help with appetite control, which can prevent weight gain or even help with weight loss. The study included all kinds of tree nuts, such as hazelnuts and walnuts, and peanuts (which are technically legumes). They are packed with fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals, including folate,

health. They also contain the most antioxidants compared with other nuts, according to a study from the American Chemical Society. But the fat, along with protein, is satiating

and helps slow rises in blood sugar. That can prevent cravings for sweets and other carbohydrate-rich foods. Research has also shown that eating nuts daily may help us live healthier lives.

Contd. from previous issue (Part 9) Without saying anything, I rushed into the washroom and locked it. I covered my mouth with my both hands. I couldn’t help wailing bitterly. I was crying wolf covering my mouth with my hands. I was afraid that Sam would bang the door again, and we will face the same embarrassment just like the last night. But Sam didn’t do so.

nice instead of smart. “Hadn’t my parents confirmed this about Sam?”, I asked myself. We had performed Gidha dance in the annual function of our college and the whole college was thrilled. I was recalling one boli of gidha; Ratin dengarh-dengarh hoi (a couple had a big fight last night). I could realize its real meaning only that horrible night with Sam. How much we used to amuse ourselves singing this boli (folk song) without realizing its meaning! My life had turned out to be an ocean of sorrows in just two days. I was never going to get to the shore of relief. I was feeling absolutely hopeless. I don’t remember when I fell on the marble floor of the washroom and slept unconscious right there. All of a sudden, I woke up. My whole body had stiffened for the cold from the floor. My left side had gone numb. I, with utmost effort, got up, opened the washroom door and came out. Sam was sleeping all over the bed with his shoes on. I had fever. I, in terrible pain, took out a pill from my purse, took it with water and slept on the carpet floor with the blanket on. 8. My hospitalisation When I regained

consciousness, I was lying on a hospital bed. I was on a drip. I was burning up. Seeing me opening my eyes, Sam called the doctor. A lady doctor came and checked me. “Now, she is out of danger.”, said the lady doctor and left the room “Hello aunt, please talk to Sonia.”, Sam called my mom and asked her to talk to me. He handed over the phone to me. “Hello…I am fine now…I had a very high fever.”, I didn’t tell my mom what actually had happened; as I had no idea what Sam would have told her. Sam sat on a chair beside my bed. I didn’t even try to look at him so that he could feel I was very angry with him. I could see him from the corner of my eye that he was trying to speak to me. Ignoring him, I was trying to make him realize that I didn’t need any explanation for what he had done to me. I closed my eyes and tried to sleep, and I fell asleep. I don’t remember when I regained consciousness after that. When I woke up my fever was down, but my left shoulder, leg and back were yet pretty numb. I was feeling so weak. Just then the lady doctor came and asked me how I was doing. I told her that I was ok, but my left side was badly numb, and I was feeling very weak. Contd. in next issue

novel half page english I was recalling a yearold college days. We used to make fun of Harjit’s fiancé because he wasn’t handsome at all. Harjit was pretty fair, slim and beautiful. God knew why her parents had selected such a boy for her. The only thing we heard that the boy was very nice. He had no bad habits. So what! At least a couple should match to some extent. How wrong we used to think! I could realize my second night how important it was for a husband to be

The right way to eat fruits

L

oaded with nutrients and fibre, fruits protect us against many health conditions. But how to include these fresh fruits in our daily diet is often misunderstood. There is no right or wrong way to eat fruits but consuming them in an effective way can definitely provide a number of health benefits. The best time to eat fruits The first thing you should do in the morning is eating one fruit before anything else. As our stomach is empty, this practice helps in absorbing its nutrients in the body. Our body can easily digest the fruit eaten empty stomach and allows the stomach to easily process it. THE RULE There applies a rule of eating a fruit empty stomach early in the morning. People who have stomach ulcers or acid reflux should not adapt this practice. Also, people with weak stomach functions like toddlers and elderly people should not consume fruits empty stomach. It is because some fruits like citrus fruits, pineapples, cranberries, grapefruits etc. contain acetic acid. This increases the production of gastric acid and can worsen the condition. Can you eat fruits between the meals? Definitely yes. Fruits are a great snack

when eaten between two meals. This increases the metabolism rate and maintains blood sugar levels. When you consume healthy snack between meals, your body doesn’t store fat or starve. Wrong time to consume fruits

It is never recommended to consume fruits right after a meal. It is a wrong belief that eating fruits right after a meal helps in digesting food and breaking down calories. This is not true. Fruits contain natural sweeteners and calories too. So instead of breaking the calories, they only add up to the number.

Eat these fruits in moderation Fruits that contain a high amount of natural sweetness like pomegranate, mangoes, grapes, fig, lychee and watermelon should be consumed in a moderate amount, especially for those who have high blood sugar levels.

cientists have developed a new wireless internet based on harmless infrared rays that is 100 times faster than existing wi-fi network and has the capacity to support more devices without getting congested. Slow wi-fi is a source of irritation that nearly everyone experiences. Wireless devices in the home consume ever more data, and it is only growing, and congesting the wi-fi network, researchers said. The wireless network developed by researchers at Eindhoven University of Technology in The Netherlands not only has a huge capacity – more than 40 Gigabits per second (Gbit/s) – but also there is no need to share since every device gets its own ray of light. The system is simple and cheap to set up. The wireless data comes from a few central ‘light antennas’, for instance mounted on the ceiling, which are able to very precisely direct the rays of light supplied by an optical fibre. The antennas contain a pair of gratings that radiate light rays of different wavelengths at different angles (‘passive diffraction gratings’). Changing the light wavelengths also changes the direction of the ray of light. Since a safe infrared wavelength is used that does not reach the vulnerable retina in your eye, this technique is harmless. If you walk around as a user and your smartphone or tablet moves out of the light antenna’s line of sight, then another light antenna takes over, researchers said. The network tracks the precise location of

www.saentertainment.ca

every wireless device using its radio signal transmitted in the return direction, they said. It is a simple matter to add devices: they are assigned different wavelengths by the same light antenna and so do not have to share capacity. Moreover, there is no longer any interference from a neighbouring wi-fi network. Current wi-fi uses radio signals with a frequency of 2.5

APRIL 2017

or five gigahertz. The new system uses infrared light with wavelengths of 1,500 nanometres and higher. This light has frequencies that are thousands of times higher, some 200 terahertz, which makes the data capacity of the light rays much larger. Researchers managed to achieve a speed of 42.8 Gbit/s over a distance of 2.5 metres. Even if you have the very

best wi-fi system available, you would not get more than 300 Megabit/s in total, which is some hundred times less than the speed per ray of light achieved by the new system. The system has so far used the light rays only to download; uploads are still done using radio signals since in most applications much less capacity is needed for uploading.

uying or renting a home is one of life’s biggest decisions – and one of its biggest financial responsibilities. We have seen record price-rise in Vancouver region in recent years. Regardless of this recent price rise, demand for houses is going up. Every time we sit with a home buyer they ask questions like, “Should I buy now or wait?” Or “How much my house would be worth in a year from now?” I strongly believe that A home owner’s net worth is 30 X GREATER Than that of a renter. By buying a house you are putting your housing cost at work for you. Simply put, homeownership is a form of ‘forced savings’. Every time you pay your mortgage you are contributing to your net worth. Every time you pay your rent, you are contributing to your landlord’s net worth. The Housing Pulse Survey from NAR reveals that 80% of consumers believe that purchasing a home is a good financial decision. “Though there will always be discussion about whether to buy or rent, or whether the stock market offers a bigger return than real estate, the reality is that homeowners steadily build wealth. The simplest math shouldn’t be overlooked.” Why Own? 1 Enjoy the fact it’s all yours. It’s a cultural thing with Canadians to want to buy a home about 70 per cent of us do. Pride of ownership, the ability to decorate how you like (even if your favourite wall colour is purple), and the stability of knowing no landlord can force you to move are big motivators. People want peaceful life and are fed up of complaints of landlord about ‘wrongly parked car’ or ‘only two loads of laundry allowed’. 2 Put your money to work. Typically the biggest motivator is dollars and cents. Renting means every penny of your monthly payment is spent gone for good period. On the other hand, a portion of each month’s mortgage payment goes to reducing your principal it’s like putting cash into your own savings account rather than someone else’s.

real estate

A home owner’s net worth is 30 X GREATER Than that of a renter

And with time your home’s value will probably go up. Historically, housing values continue to rise steadily over time, thus creating a solid investment in your future. As they say in real estate, it’s not timing the market, it’s time spent in the market. Then there’s the leverage factor. Let’s consider a hypothetical $500,000 house. A 20% down payment would mean an actual investment of $100,000. As your property value increases, however, you reap the benefit on the entire $500,000 so an annual increase of just 2.5% in property value translates to $12,500 or a whopping 12.5% return on your initial investment. Of course, you could always settle for something closer to the current return of 3% or less on a term note. Most insiders agree that today’s historic low mortgage rates show no sign of bumping up any time soon. And while a 25-year amortization on a mortgage may sound like a long time, it goes by fast and suddenly you’re mortgage free with only property tax and maintenance to pay. Rent, on the other hand, never ends it only increases. 3 Make tax-free profits. Final thought to ponder. Although an RRSP should be part of every retirement plan, you will always need a roof over your head. You’re also forced to convert an RRSP at age 71 and begin withdrawing funds and paying tax on them. But only you choose when to sell your home. Best of all, when you do sell, that profit is tax free on your primary residence and after all, who doesn’t like to get a tax-free windfall?

Nav Khela (Real Estate Consultant)

4 Benefit from competition for your dollar. In today’s competitive market, developers are offering increasingly innovative incentives for buyers considering a brand-new home. No strata fees for a year or more, legal expenses, exotic vacations, upgrade packages, custom vintage wines, even cars have made appearances as nocost buyer incentives. Bottom line is that if you are interested in finding out if you could put your housing cost to work for you through homeownership, meet with a real estate professional in your area who can guide you through the process.

How to prepare for a Doctor’s

appointment?

Contd. from previous Issue.

normal? Do you have any pains? How’s your mood? Your night life? Are you feeling unusually tired? It will be prudent to add that a doctor is watching your face reactions while asking the questions. Studies show that 85 to 95 percent of diagnoses can be made by the medical history alone. Your doctor is also a good listener. It’s really amazing that a doctor accomplish a diagnosis in 10 to 15 minutes in most of the cases. God bless these angels to serve the humanity successively. • Be a good listener: Do not interrupt the doctor. Stay fully focused and maintain an eye contact during your confabulations. Rather, write important stuff lest you will be forgetting. Speak when the doctor ask for it. • Carry your medical records with you: Bring medical records from other physicians with you, including X-rays/ MRIs as applicable. If another physician has referred you, try to expedite the exchange of medical records. Very often, you must authorize the release of your records to the new physician. Not every doctor’s office will anticipate this or contact you beforehand to arrange for the transfer of records. Call ahead and ask how these arrangements should be made. The successful transfer of your records may help you avoid the expense and medical risk of repeat diagnostic tests. • Know what medications you’re taking: Bring all your medications- prescription, non-prescription, vitamins, herbs, minerals- in their original containers to your appointment. This way the doctor understands the medication dosage, frequency and their deadly side effects. If you take medications, in succession, keep an updated record of the names of the drugs, dosage and frequency. This helps your physician avoid potential drug interactions. It’s not uncommon for patients to be seen by several specialists, each of whom prescribes different medications. Also let the doctor know about medications you have tried that caused side effects or didn’t work. The patients who frustrate the doctor most are the ones who say I take a little white pill or the triangular pill. They don’t know what their medications are or what they’re for. One question a doctor is going to ask is, “Do you have any allergies? You must know accurate answer about it. • While booking an appointment, if need be, ask for more time: Sometimes time restrictions decrease the amount of verbal reinforcement the doctor can offer. Ask for a little bit more time, at the time of booking appointment, so that all pointsare covered and necessary details are confabulated upon... Ask what kind of follow-up is needed. Be prepared to take notes, wherever warranted. A recent study revealed patients couldn’t remember more than two-thirds of the medical problems their doctor diagnosed following a general

Questions you should ask during a visit with your Doctor • What is this problem possibly? • What can I expect from the natural course of this problem? • Is there treatment available to modify the course? • How long before I should see the side effects of the medication? • Under what circumstances should I notify the doctor again? • What is the prognosis? • Can I have a medical certificate to • Keep an open mind: The patients, give it to my employer? who trouble, a doctor, are those Do not forget to re-check who come in with your medicine with the a fixed idea about Prof. Surinder the treatment they Shaun Kochhar pharmacist: LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM should receive.“I Repeated instances (A freelance writer with have a stomach ache have happened that a 36 Years Exp.) and I need an MRI,” pharmacist or his peers is not a good line and your misread the hand written prescription of doctor may be ill at ease. Your role is to provide the accurate information so that he does not treat you by guess and by gosh. If you do not feel comfortable or get emotional, then it is better to write on a piece of paper and hand it over at reception. This will go in your file and Doctor will read it immediately before the appointment

place in a doctor’s exam room locally, a guideline reading as follows: A patient cannot discuss more than 2 problems during an appointment. If so seek another appointment. Conversely, I am incongruent with this thought process in the light of the fact that a patient has approx. 20 minutes. However, towards a solution- while booking an appointment- request for more time. The receptionist is trained by the doctor to accommodate you every time. Your physician needs your help without fail. If your expectation is that all you have to do is put in appearance for an appointment and the doctor will do the rest, your visit is likely to be a frustrating one, and you may put yourself at a risk for incorrect diagnosis. If you are in front of a Homeopath, come prepared to answer many questions. Remember, your doctor is also a human being. He does not have special scanners that he can pull out of his pockets to miraculously diagnose your problem. The doctor’s appointment is your opportunity to discuss your medical problems and immediate concerns. By preparing well for the appointment, you will be less likely to waste the opportunity, and more likely to gain a degree of satisfaction from the visit. To take proper cudgels, I always prepare, in writing- a list of questions to be asked or information to be provided to the Doctor- to avoid the risk of forgetting some important information at the time of reckoning. What about you?

Nieva to be India’s Kohli is on new boxing coach a different

planet, says Flintoff

S

antiago Nieva will be India’s new foreign coach for men boxers, succeeding Cuban BI Fernandes. “Nieva has been recommended by AIBA to us and he comes with good experience,” Boxing Federation of India (BFI) president Ajay Singh said. Nieva, an AIBA three-star coach, was attached with the Swedish men’s team until last year. He quit the position after the Rio Olympics. The Sweden-based coach, who represented Argentina during his competitive days, is being

brought on board till the World Championships (August 25 to September 3 in Hamburg). He will arrive in India and immediately take charge in Patiala, where one of the two national camps is currently being conducted. The 42-year-old, a former bantam and featherweight boxer, served as the Swedish national coach for eight years and was inducted into the AIBA coaches commission in 2015. Nieva has also served as a manager of the Argentine team and even competed for the country at the 1997 World Cup.

D

escribing Virat Kohli as “head and shoulders” above his international contemporaries, former England captain Andrew Flintoff says the Indian skipper is “on a different planet”. “He’s absolutely on his own. You look at the four main captains; Steve Smith, Kane Williamson, Joe Root and Virat Kohli. They’re all very, very good players but Virat is head and shoulders above all of them,” Flintoff was quoted as saying in the Cricket Australia website. “You watch him play and the one thing that’s so impressive is that in Test cricket he’s got all the shots and tricks but decides to get his head down and grind runs out. “And then in the short-form of the game he just hits boundaries without looking like taking a risk. He’s in complete control. The other three I mentioned are very good players but Kohli is on a different planet,” he added. In his only Test series in England in 2014, Kohli was dismissed four times by English seamer Jimmy Anderson as the right-handed batsman could not cross the 50-mark in any of his 10 innings. However, Flintoff said Kohli will silence his critics, who believe he can’t bat on seaming tracks, when India tours England next time. “It frustrates me when everyone says ‘he just does it in India, wait until he gets to England’,” Flintoff said. “That’s nonsense, he’s a fine player. When he comes to England the ball will nip around a bit and he’ll adapt his game accordingly. I would’ve loved to have a bowl at him but I honestly don’t know (what his weaknesses are).”

Exploring the highlights of Japan: from busy Tokyo to the majestic Fuji Exploring the highlights of Japan: from busy Tokyo to the majestic Fuji

J

apan is cherry blossom, and Japan is Hello Kitty. It’s neon signs, sushi, and it’s Sony, Nikon, and Nintendo. But beyond the brands and stereotypes which Japan exports, you will find a culturally rich, and a surprisingly diverse, country of fascinating sites to explore. Tokyo – a megacity The chances are that any visitor will

fly into Tokyo, a mega-megacity with nearly 40 million people living in the metropolitan area. The skyscrapers soar towards the heaven, and the city glitters with lights, but behind the modern veneer is a city with a long and illustrious history. Imperial Palace The Imperial Palace, still home to the Emperor of Japan, sits amongst

formal gardens; there are numerous Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples; and Tokyo National Museum and the city’s other galleries have world-class collections on show. Allow time to walk around the city. Seek out the various shopping centres such as Ameyoko Arcade, the city’s only open-air pedestrianised market and the shopping centre at Hachimandori for its enjoyable mix of high and low end shopping.

in heritage pilgrims’ hostels, Walk Japan’s is the best way to explore this wintery wonderland. If you are feeling less energetic, take a trip instead to the Jigokudani Yaenkoen Park, famed for its naturally occurring hot springs. You won’t be the only one in the pool, however, as the local Japanese macaque (also known colloquially as snow monkey) roll in the snow and then hop into the steaming hot springs to warm up!

Hakone – Shinto and Fuji From Tokyo you can reach Hakone on a day trip: it’s a little over an hour’s drive away. Historically this was the site of an important Shinto shrine, the Hakone Gongen, which lies on the shore of Lake Ashi. There has been a shrine here since 757, though the current structure was rebuilt in the late 16th century. It’s within the UNESCO-listed Hakone Geopark and the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, and the snow-capped peak of Fuji (which means “mountain” in Japanese, so you don’t need to say Mount Fuji) is just as captivating as it appears in the ancient woodblock prints. If you have the time, go out on a boat trip on one of the lakes, visit the islands and hot springs, and hike to the Shiraito Falls, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nagano – see the snow monkey The mountainous region of Nagano — accessible from Tokyo on the bullet train — gets some of the heaviest snow fall in the world, and yet, remarkably, people still manage to live here. If you are interested in learning about the area’s history, walking pilgrims trails and staying

Kyoto and the cherry blossoms Kyoto is Japan’s touristic heartland, and understandably so. It was Japan’s Imperial capital for more than 1,000 years, and 20 per cent of the country’s national treasures are located here. Of course it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and during hanami (cherry blossom season) from late March to May, the city is packed with visitors. This is the cultural centre of Japan, its history, arts, and people. There are an extraordinary 2,000 temples and shrines, and Kyoto is also the ideal location to learn about the art of the Japanese tea ceremony, the highly stylised Noh theatre, and ink and wash painting. Lovers of architecture and aesthetics will be in their element. Year on year, Japan is rated as one of the safest travel destinations in the world. It’s not a cheap place to visit, but what you can guarantee is that Japan will challenge and exceed your expectations, from the first petal of cherry blossom, to the very last sip of sake. It’s one of Asia’s most enthralling countries, and once you’ve had a bite of Japan, you’ll be desperate to return.

HIV AND AIDS-HOW TO TAKE PROPER CUDGELS AGAINST IT?

What is HIV? HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system. Immune system is our body’s natural defense against sickness. The virus slowly destroys a type of white blood cell in the immune system called a T-helper cell, and makes copies of it inside these cells. T-helper cells are also referred to as CD4 cells in medical parlance. Since HIV destroys more CD4 cells and makes more copies of it, it gradually breaks down a person’s immune system. This means someone living with HIV, who is not receiving treatment, will find it harder and harder to fight off infections and diseases. However, the speed at which HIV progresses normally varies depending on age, health, ethnicity, race, area and background. they are at high risk of HIV infection via unprotected sex, they should talk to a healthcare professional about whether PrEP is right for them. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) PEP is the use of antiretroviral drugs after an event that puts you at risk of HIV - such as unprotected sex - to stop HIV from spreading in the body. It must be started within 72 hours of possible exposure. However, PEP is not 100% effective, and should not be viewed as an alternative to condoms.Your doctor or healthcare worker will advise you on whether you could take PEP. If you are having a tattoo or piercing, make sure that a clean, sterilized needle is used. It is always better to buy a sterilized needle yourself and make sure that only this one is used on your body. It is always better to have a friend or relative with you as an extra pair of eyes has its own benefits. How is HIV transmitted from mother-to-baby? In case of a pregnant woman being HIV positive, HIV can pass into the baby’s body. This is most likely to occur in the last few weeks of pregnancy, during labour, or delivery. Breastfeeding your baby can also transmit HIV, because HIV is found in awoman’s breastmilk. There is a 15-45% chance of passing HIV to a baby if neither of you take HIV treatment. Protecting your baby during childbirth If the HIV+ve mother –to- be had taken treatment correctly, it will lower the amount of HIV in her body so much that it is said to be ‘undetectable’ (undetectable viral load). In such a situation a normal, vaginal delivery can happen as the risk of passing HIV to the baby during childbirth will be very less.If you don’t have an undetectable viral load, you may be offered a caesarean section, as this carries a smaller risk of passing HIV to your baby against a vaginal delivery. Protecting your baby during breastfeeding Breast milk contains HIV. Then bottle feed is the best remedy. If you do not have access to formula and clean, boiled water all of the time, you may be advised by your physician to breastfeed while both you and your baby are taking antiretroviral treatment. Can the baby have HIV after birth? Attending doctors’ will be checking/testing the babyfor HIV at birth, and again after six months and then after 18 months. How is HIV passed on by blood transfusions and transplants? A person who is Hive cannot donate blood or blood products, such as an organ or tissue, because the person who receives this blood product is likely to develop an HIV infection too.To prevent this, blood products are tested for HIV before they are given to anyone around the globe. How I can check the blood transfusion/transplant I’m receiving is safe? To be vigilant and on the safer side, always ensure that the blood product is checked and is HIV free. It is your right to ask the healthcare professional if it has been tested for HIV or not. Can I get HIV from donating blood? No. New, disposable and sterile needles will be used to collect your blood, meaning there will be no blood from an HIV-positive person on the needle. If you suspect that the needle your healthcare worker is using is not new or sterile then ask them to change the needle before agreeing to give blood. Conclusion It’s now 35 years since HIV was finally discovered in USA and research for cure started... The virus is treated and managed with acombination of medications — termed ‘highly active antiretroviral therapy’ or Haart. Haart have resulted in being able to maintain the infected person’s immune system and therefore prevent the opportunistic infections that resulted in the development of AIDS and led to death. High-risk groups of this disease are sex workers and drug addicts. Doctors now categorize this as a chronic disease, though social stigma is attached to it. Due to its fear affect, depression in those with HIV is nearly ten times higher than among the general public. According to 2014 National HIV estimates, an estimated 75,500 Canadians were livingwith HIV at the end of 2014. The Supreme Court of Canada, in the year 1998, formalized the ruling –in a case known as R v. Cuerrier- that an HIV +ve person has to declare his status to his life/sexual partner or client beforeengaging in behaviors that could put someone else at “significant risk of serious bodily harm.” Some people wrongly believe that HIV can be spread by the air. The HIV virus can’t survive outside the body after 72 hrs. And other ways such as by touching toilet seats or from mosquito bites it does not happen. There is no need to panic while dealing with these persons, though properand cudgels are life sustaining.
