As I was tearing down the road, in my sedan, to have a maiden interface with Sr. Amar Singh Dhaliwal Chairman Western Community College Surrey, the images of the journey of this 5 year young college started flashing on the horizons of my mind. Being in the same field, I was thinking how humungous it is, to set up a college in this vying age of competition and successively steer it out of the gravitational pull of initial operating losses, which usually gives sleepless nights to all of the promoters involved.
Prof. Surinder Shaun Kochhar LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM (A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp.)
W
ith these thoughts, I was climbing up the stairs of this immaculately clean college building and was greeted by Sr. Amar Singh Dhaliwal and others. After the initial courtesies were over, I asked Mr. Amar Singh, how the brain storming exercise was conducted; how the pendulum shift finally stayed, towards the risky education field and the idea was finally conceived and locked? Now I saw him losing half of his connection with me and the surrounding environment, and he started rummaging through the early days when brain storming exercise was conducted. After a pause and a deep breath, pat came his reply,” All the three of my daughters are in the medical profession and we, their parents, are from the education field. Our son Gurpal, President of this college, has over two decades of mana-

Dhaliwal gerial experience in Canada. Though this project is a brain child of my son we all took the brave decision by calculating the risk quotient. Primarily there are two types of people. Type one is work hard and type two is work hardly. This septuagenarian- born at the end of silent generation era- definitely belongs to the first type. Though every potter praises his pot, yet- during my conversation he informed me that the unflinching support by a very experienced Core- Think-Tank of very hard working close family members, board executives and the dedicated team of promoter employees/staff of this college made this happen, as one flower makes no garland. As black will take no other hue, in the same vein, hardworking persons will always be productive to the community. This duo of father- son team is behind the successful launch of this college, which is now making further forays in its area of operations. Slowly and surely this college added many courses one by one. Presently, this college is doling out 27 courses and many more are in the pipeline. Over 1000 students have completed HCA program with 99% employment rate. The Unique Selling Point (USP) of this college is: it offers various programs during the day, by the evening or on the weekends so that immigrant students can work on the sidelines to pay their bills. Second, students pay their tuition fee conveniently, on monthly basis. There are about 150 to 200 students enrolled at any given time around the year. Back home in India Mr. Amar Singh, born and brought up in Malwa ethnicity in Punjab, served as a lecturer for over a decade in various government schools and finally worked as Principal in Baba Lachhman Dass Sidh College for Women Mallianwala [Distt Moga in Punjab] before hanging up his boots in India. As a lecturer he loved his students even more than his own children, he stated. He was ably supported by his post graduate wife- Mrs. Amarjit Kaur Dhaliwal who also retired as a Lecturer in a government school in Punjab India.
When opportunity meets preparation, then success happens. The roaring success of this college is a befitting example of unflinching hard work and immense team effort successively put together. On the sports front, he played Kabaddi, Soccer. He is a person of giving nature. Being a post graduate in Punjabi , it is but natural for him to have passion for Punjabi literature/ poetry. He informed that, he has read the works of many legendary writers namely, Shiv Batalvi, Baba Bulley Shah, Amrita Pritam , Surjit Patar to quote a few. What fascinates me is his simple living and great thinking. When I asked Mr. Gurpal the CEO of this college about the fierce competition in education industry, he stated,” Competition is in every field. Ultimately hard work separates the chaff from the wheat. Our future depends on our hard work done at present. God has been kind to all of
us. Our hard work is rewarded as we got accreditation within 3 years. We are blessed with a great team of hard working executives and teaching staff.” Needless to add that he is presently serving as a Manager of a Real Canadian Superstore chain. For over 2 decades he has dedicated himself to this organization. In fine, I can say, Good mind good find. Long live this organization which serves as a base for the citizens of the area to get well equipped as education is an ultimate bread earner. People who make this happen certainly are deserving of a well earned pat on their back. Jai Ho!.
“If you want to empower your community and inculcate perennial peace there in, then EDUCATE it. Growth or development always proves a farce in a community or country where majority is not educated. By opening a college for educating the diaspora vis- a -vis community at large, is one of the best gift, one can give to his/her motherland, Canada and her denizens. Hats off to this Father –Son duo, for this pioneering work.”

RELATIONSHIP movie review
The Black Prince movie review:
T
he Black Prince movie review: In The Black Prince, the only thing that shows any existential confusion is the hairstyle on that boy who couldn’t be king, Duleep Singh. It’s longish, Sikhish, baldish, and then greyish, depending on the time of his life you meet Duleep. The Black Prince movie star rating: 1 The Black Prince director: Kavi Raz The Black Prince cast: Satinder Sartaaj, Amanda Root, Shabana Azmi Once upon a time, there was a prince of the great Kingdom of Punjab, who was taken from his mother at the age of five by the British, transported by them to distant England and converted to Christianity, who grew up feeling something was amiss, but who was
now so used to the life of comfort he led, he couldn’t or wouldn’t do much about it. Couldn’t, or wouldn’t? That makes for a great dilemma. But not in The Black Prince, where the only thing that shows any existential confusion is the hairstyle on that boy who couldn’t be king, Duleep Singh. It’s longish, Sikhish, bald-ish, and then greyish, depending on the time of his life you meet Duleep. It’s never stray-ish, though, much in the nature of this still-born, moribund film with less life than the twirl of a Bhangra move. In the embarrassingly inadequate form of Satinder Sartaaj, Duleep looks far from the Lion of Punjab and his mother, played by Shabana Azmi (trying to give the film a brave, Punjabi kick into action), touts him to be. Not to
speak of the Casanova, who bids women forth with a look from his heavy-lidded eyes. Particularly as Duleep looks at everyone like that. Including his very interesting and loyal sidekick, Arur Singh (Rup Magon). Hmmm. Meanwhile, the film chronologically goes through the motions against the backdrop of a series of imposing mansions, from Aden in Yemen to Nashik in India to Moscow in Russia. Queen Victoria (Root) pops up now and again in ill-fitting gowns and mousey hairdos. And everyone, before dying, unfailingly and aggressively coughs. Shabana Azmi, incidentally, once fronted a delightful film called Loins of Punjab. A kingdom can do with some.

Free Yourself From Fashion Rules
H
ere are 5 fashion rules you’ve got to break now. Go, steal the spotlight!
Rule #1: You can’t wear denim to office A District Collector in Odisha may have barred people from visiting him in office wearing T-shirt and jeans, but the truth is that denim has acquired workwear status. You can wear them for interviews and formal dinners. Even the hitherto frowned upon trend of ‘denim-on-denim’ is kosher now. The trick lies in pairing pieces of varying washes - light denim shirt with indigo jeans, or a dark jacket with a lightwash, sky-blue, pencil-fit denim skirt. Just remember: on-trend yet office-appropriate. Rule #2: You’ve to wear red for your wedding Buck the obvious choice and choose colours like soft pink and icy blue or emerald and sunshine yellow. Throw attention on your sexy choli by ditching the dupatta. You can choose black too, which was once considered inauspicious. For the mehendi and reception, black attire paired with

metallics like gold or silver works. Rule #3: You need a model figure to wear Maxis and Midis Don’t have the famous Katrina Kaif curves? But then a few of us do. That doesn’t mean you can’t wear floor-grazing dresses though. Focus on the right fit. For maxis, choose solid colours that skim the length of your body. For midi skirts, go for a high-waisted styles. Say ‘hi’ to heels - if not stilettos, go for wedges.

a time. Rule #4: You can’t sport metallics as daywear Sparkling accoutrements can be worn any time of the day, provided you keep the look dressed down. Add a subtle sparkle by sporting either knitwear, jackets, blouses, jeans, pants, skirts or scarves that have a hint of lurex (gold or silver metallic thread) running through them. Here, the overall shiny effect is restrained. Remember to stick to one sparkly item at

Rule #5: Men can’t wear pink Gender fluidity is the new fashion buzzword. ‘Men in pink’, in fact, was the top trend at most of the Fall 2016 fashion weeks. Take cues from Gucci and Pigalle to sport various shades of pink. If you don’t wish to go all out, start by sporting a pink shirt to work; it looks great with a suit as it complements most colours.

Tips to choose the right accessories to make an impression
O
ne can wear a nice dress, but the look can be incomplete without the right accessories. Accessories can turn an outfit from drab to fab. To look your best, put in extra effort into selecting your fashion accessories as you do the main components of your ensemble. Some of the classic trends that are doing rounds this season are candy-coloured jewellery and chokershaped pieces, say experts. Sanchit Jain and Mohit Malhotra from Kohar Jewels as well as Ageerika Hari from Vaitaanika present a list of accessories that are trending nowadays: 4 Chunky jewellery, is meant to make a bold impact as it adds a pop of colour, texture and shine to your look. Statement earrings goes very well with a dress with high neckline. One can also wear chunky earrings if the dress has embroidery or any interesting pattern. 4 Classic collections include pearl or diamond jewellery. These accessories go well with understated dresses and tops, black and leather accessories. 4 Candy-coloured jewellery pieces like resin bracelets or colourful watches go well with plain tops and dresses. They add a pop of colour and playfulness to the outfit. 4 Delicate jewellery provides a subtle shine to any outfit. Delicate rings, necklaces and earrings can make you look pristine. Any plain outfit will enhance the delicateness of your jewellery and emphasise on design. 4 Wear either gold or silver jewellery but never both. Hair accessories trump the look as these are the accessories that people notice first. Always add a piece of jewellery one cant go wrong with a bit of extra shine. 4 To make your look pop, layer several pieces together. 4 Bright coloured earrings, stacked bracelets of different materials, and vintage jewellery are all great statement accessories. A sleep pendant necklace can make as much of a statement as a bejewelled chocker. Enamel pins are also a form of jewellery, and are incredibly popular right now. 4 For a glamorous look, one can opt for chandelier earrings, statement necklaces, cocktail rings , and stone encrusted accessories 4 Bold and unique accessories or jewellery should be worn with understated clothing, and only one piece per outfit. The key rule that less is more is true. Balance the size of your accessory pieces. 4 If you are wearing a statement necklace, skip wearing earrings or keep it simple. Curtesy: IANS

6 stylish ways to wear a denim jacket
D
enim is the biggest trend of the season and has been ruling fashion for many years now. From denim jackets to shirts and even dresses, this fabric is more than ‘just jeans’. And when it comes to summer layering, a denim jacket is the most versatile look and works with everything. The key to work this piece is all about styling it with the right clothes. Here are 6 fashionable ways you can style this jacket:
Denim on denim look This look is one of the most popular denim trends. This double-denim look works flawlessly and is all about working the right colours. “You can wear a light washed denim jacket with dark blue jeans or vice versa,” says Ritika Taneja, Fashion Director, ShopClues.com. And if you’re all game for shorts this summer, try the shorts + jacket combo. “Go urban with this look and pair your look with reflector shades,” says Rina S Walia, Stylist, Limeroad.
Denim with all-white look Summer is all about light hues, making white a great pick for summers. “Go daring and pair your allwhite look with the jacket,” says Ritika. Complete this look with metallic sandals and funky accessories.
Mix and match Get your summer style on point with mixing the floral trend with denim. “Layer your acid wash denim jacket over a floral top or dress,’’ says Rina. ‘’Complete this look with platform shoes and a cool backpack,’’ she adds.
Wear your jacket as a shirt If you always keep your jacket open, then try the cool buttoned up look. “Wear this buttoned jacket with black skinny jeans or a maxi to get a whole new look,’’ says Ritika.
Casual take Take a cue from street-style fashion and pair your bomber jacket with a skater dress. To refurbish your jacket, you can also add DIY stickers. ‘’Pair your skater dress with a pair of crispy white sneakers, keeping it casual,” says Rina.
Crop top + crop jacket Give your style a 90’s touch by pairing your crop top with a cropped denim jacket. “Pair your favourite crop tees with a jacket for a playful look this summer.’’ Says Ritika. Curtesy: TNN

thanks to all
Showshaa, a casual dining taproom, is a first-of-its-kind concept in Metro Vancouver. Creative tapas-style eats, juiciest kebabs and authentic sizzlers at Showshaa is the “must-have” food with a handpicked selection of local and international beers, wines and cocktails. The word “Showshaa” is a casual Indian lingo for ‘showbiz’, or being eye-catchy and pompous. Ajay Devgn to essay Taanaji Malusare in upcoming film
The experience of rejection and failure is priceless:
Nawazuddin Siddiqui
H
e came to the city of dreams with Rs 2,500 in his pocket and an ambition to make it big in films. But before giving him his due, Mumbai tested Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s patience so much so that the actor has now become fear-proof. “I have already faced so much in my life. I have seen that time when I didn’t even have a single penny in my pocket. And it stayed like that for two-three years. I used to have lunch at one friend’s place, dinner at other’s and a third friend would get cigarettes for me. I came to Mumbai with Rs 2,500. If I again face a situation where I am left with just Rs 2,500, I would not feel like a failure. I am not afraid of anything,” said Nawaz. His first Bollywood break was a small role in Aamir Khan’s Sarfarosh. The 43-year-old actor continued featuring in blink-and-you-miss-it roles in various films till Gangs of Wasseypur came and changed his fate. From doing walk-on parts to finally being the star of his own films, life has taken a 180 degree turn for Nawaz, but the actor says he is still unaffected by the success he has achieved. “After ‘Gangs...’ I have been continuously busy. I did not get time to sit and analyse my success or stardom. My priority is to act and not think about stardom. Of course, perception of people has changed towards me, but I am still the same. The only change in me is as a performer. I have grown in my craft,” he says. Nawaz says earning money and fame is not his aim and hence fear of losing them does not bother him. “It is not about money, but the experience I have gained during my journey, which matters to me. The experience of rejection and failure is priceless. These things have made me what I am today. Whatever I have today is much more than what I ever expected. I feel very secure in my space.”
A
ctor Ajay Devgn is all set to play the role of Subedar Taanaji Malusare, a military leader in the army of Shivaji and also the founder of the Maratha Empire in 17th century India, in the upcoming period-action film titled “Taanaji - The Unsung Warrior”. Ajay on Wednesday shared the first poster of the upcoming film, which is directed by Om Raut. The look of the upcoming film shows Ajay in a Maratha warrior’s avatar engaged in battle. “He fought for his people, his soil and his king Chhatrapati Shivaji. The unsung warrior of glorious Indian history, Subedar Taanaji Malusare,” Ajay captioned the poster. The film is scheduled to release in 2019. Raut is best known for directing “Lokmanya: Ek Yug Purush”.

6 Make-up mistakes we often make
M
ost of us barely have time to spend even 10 minutes on our make-up every morning. Hence, it is important that we utilize those precious minutes like a pro and fix those make-up mistakes without making too much of a mess. Here’s what you can do... •M ore often than not, we end up with clumps of mascara on our eyelashes, which can be a pain to remove. Instead of trying to immediately remove it, wait a minute or two till it is dry and then peel off. This will prevent smudging. •N ot all of us are blessed with thick, dark eyebrows and have to use eyebrow pencils/ mascaras to make them darker. But we often end up over-pencilling. Correct this by using a small eyebrow brush to comb your brows and apply the tiniest bit of concealer on the browbone and just above your brows. •W e’ve all been guilty of applying too much of blush. Fix this by using a small sponge to gently remove the excess colour from the apples of your cheeks. Remember not to dab too hard or you might end up smudging the blush, making it appear even darker than before. • Getting your eyeliner smudged on your eyelid is a mistake most women have
made. Instead of fretting, simply take apply some concealer on your eyelid and top it up with some a neutral-toned eyeshadow. • Patchy eyeshadow is another common problem. Apply some concealer on a brush and gently blend it with your eyeshadow to get an even tone. • All set to party and realise your face looks like the glitter fairy exploded on it? Instead of using a damp tissue, use scotch tape on a earbud to remove excess glitter. Cortsey: TNN
How to get thicker eyebrows naturally
O
ver the last few years, big and bushy brows have become a rage. The latest brow trend has replaced skinny or pencil-thin brows, which was a big beauty trend in the 90’s. Eyebrows define your face and thicker brows add a youthful touch to your face. If you’re not blessed with a thicker pair of brows, you can always fill in the sparse areas or make them look thicker using brow gels. But if you’re looking for something natural and long-lasting, then we’ve got the right tips for you. Here are 4 ways to get thicker brows naturally: 1. Don’t pluck First things first, don’t over pluck your eyebrows. Excessive plucking and even waxing will prevent the hair from growing back. Eyebrows grow in 2-3 months cycle, so not tweezing for a few months can actually show a lot of difference. 2. Moisturise Your brow area needs to stay hydrated

and nourished. Use some petroleum jelly to lock the moisture. You can apply this 2-3 times a day to promote hair growth. 3. Oil massage The way oil works for your hair, it will do the same for your eyebrows. You can use castor, olive or coconut oil to promote hair growth. Dip a cotton swab in oil and gently massage before you sleep. 4. Egg whites Egg contains protein, which helps to promote hair growth and nourishes hair follicles. Beat white egg and apply this solution for 20 minutes. Cortsey: TNN

Contd. from previous issue (Part 13) my mom and Jassi’s mom took me to him on the very next Sunday. There were several pictures of Mata, Lord Hanumaan, Lord Shiva and many more hanging on a wall. There was a one-foothigh and two-by-five feet broad altar at the bottom of the wall covered with a red-silk sheet. Many garlands, flowers and some money were put on it. A jyoti (brass lamp) was lit on it. He asked the date, month, year and place of my birth and made my horoscope. He told us many things about me very correctly. I was really surprised. “Had you asked any astrologer before the marriage of this girl?”, the pandit asked my mom seeing my red-traditional set of marriage bracelets. “No, we didn’t.”, mom said. “If such a person gets married before the age of twenty four, he or she doesn’t have a happy married life.”, the pandit

said. “Then tell some remedy to this problem, pandit ji.”, mom entreated. “Now, the effect of Mars has become so hostile that she can lose her life too. Only Lord Jupiter is blessing as her savior, otherwise she would have been dead by now. Lord Jupiter has given this girl good brain and education. In future she can study further, but there will be some hurdles. You will have to do some remedies for them too. At present, the seven-year main period of Mars is troublesome. She will get mad in a jiffy. Therefore she should wear a pearl called ‘sucha moti’ studded in a silver ring in the little finger of her left-hand. After the main period of Mars, the sixteenyear main period of Rahu will also be unfavorable. The Venus will take her abroad, but there are some obstacles.”, the pandit said. I was astonished that we hadn’t even told him that I was married to a foreigner boy. How did he know so many things about me? “A ceremonial worship of Mars is very essential. And some other remedies for marrying her before the age of 24 are also important. The danger to her life is not yet over.”, God knows how many more things he said after some calculations from my horoscope, I was really astounded. My mom was terrified to learn about danger to my life.

“Pandit ji, please do something. Anything may happen to me, but my daughter should be safe.”, mom almost cried saying so. “Don’t worry, sister. If these astrological treatments are done properly she will be safe.”, the pandit assured us. “How much will it cost?”, mom asked. “It will come out to be Rs 8,500/-”, the pandit said adding a few things on his tips. Mom took out Rs 500/- from her purse and gave him. “Pandit ji, please start the treatment as soon as possible, we’ll pay you the balance this Tuesday. My daughter should be fine.”, mom promised. “Don’t worry at all, sister. She will be safe. All obstacles in her ways to go abroad will be cleared. Once she is abroad, we will have to do some more treatments for her. Then, there will be peace at home. She will never have money problem.”, laughing weirdly, the pandit assured us again. We were coming home. I asked Jassi’s mom if she had told the pandit about my marriage. She negated and affirmed that she had met the pandit the very first time. I was also worried a lot after learning what pandit had told. But mom was extremely upset. Mom made me wear a silver ring studded with a pearl in my left hand’s little finger. Contd. in next issue

Aromatherapy: Prof. Surinder Shaun Kochhar LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM (A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp.)
Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that retain the inherent, natural and healing smell and flavor, or “essence,” of their source Contd. from July Edition
Antibiotic and Antimicrobial Essential oils may have some interesting applications for health. However, more research is needed in humans. Essential oils, such as peppermint and Tea Tree oil, have been investigated extensively in test tubes for their antimicrobial effects. In fact, they have shown some positive results. Other Uses Essential oils have many uses outside of aromatherapy. People use them to scent their homes or freshen up things like laundry and bathroom. They are also used as a natural scent in homemade cosmetics and high-quality natural products. How to choose right Essential Oils Many companies claim that their oils are “pure” or “medical grade.” However, these terms aren’t universally defined and therefore, being a selling gimmick, holda little weight. Re-
High-quality oils only use pure plant compounds extracted via distillation or cold pressing. Avoid oils that have been diluted with synthetic fragrances, chemicals or oils.

An alternative Healer…..
Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine. It deals with essential oils. Aromatherapy is in place, to heal people, for over 6000 years with positive results. Though, some of the health claims associated with it, as echoed by the manufacturers, are controversial. Despite this, aromatherapy sales are leapfrogging. member that that it is an unregulated industry, the quality and composition of essential oils can vary greatly. While purchasing essential olis keep the following in mind: Purity: Shop around to find oil that contains only aromatic plant compounds, without additives or synthetic oils. Pure oils normally list the plant’s botanical name (such as Lavandula Officinalis is), rather than terms like “essential oil of lavender.” Quality: Pure essential oils are the ones that have been changed the least by the extraction process. Choose a chemical-free essential oil that has been extracted through distillation or mechanical cold pressing. Reputation: Purchase a brand with a reputed base/ existence over the years, for producing high-quality products. Safety and Side Effects: Just because something is natural doesn’t mean it’s safe. Plants and herbal products contain many bioactive compounds, which may be harmful to your health in some cases. Essential oils are no different. However, when inhaled or combined with base oil for use on your skin, most essential oils are considered or termed as safe. Inspite of all this, they may cause rashes, asthma attacks. Headaches and allergic reactions. While the most common side effect is a rash, the oils that have most commonly been associated with adverse reactions are lavender, peppermint, tea tree and ylang-ylang. Cinnamon being high in phenols, can cause skin irritation and shouldn’t be used on the skin without first being combined with base oil. Eating essential oils is usually not recommended, as it could potentially be harmful and in some

cases life threatening. As per various studies, which examined the safety of these oils for pregnant or breastfeeding women, It is recommended that they should avoid it. CONCLUSION Essential oils are generally considered safe to inhale or apply to the skin, as long as they’ve been combined with base oil. However, they may cause serious side effects for some people, especially if

applied directly to the skin or ingested. The evidence for many of the health claims by companies is lacking, and their effectiveness is is often exaggerated. For minor health conditions, using essential oils as a complementary therapy is ok. But if anyone is having a serious health condition or are on prescribed or OTC medication, then they should discuss their use with their physician.

Platinum Jewelry is a Hot Trend
P
latinum is the ultimate statement in luxury jewelry today. Whether you want to grab eyeballs at a society gathering or make an impression at a corporate do, timeless platinum jewelry is the perfect way to go. During any festive season, one looks forward to adding some bling to their outfit and the favourite part of festive shopping is the trip to the jewelry store to pick out some shiny new trinket. Platinum has always been the luxury metal of choice for wedding bands and trousseau gifts. A wide variety of precious metals are used to create an array of jewelry and accessories. Traditionally gold has always been one of the most popular precious metals. However, due to strength, durability, rarity, and aesthetic taste platinum jewelry continues to increase in popularity after a surge in demand and popularity over the past 10 to 15 years. Platinum jewelry is one of the hottest trends and as the demand rises, so does the variety of styles and pieces offered by jewelers and jewelry designers. Many couples are choosing platinum for their engagement and wedding rings. The light and lustrous metal is making waves as many brides turn to this white metal for an elegant look. Many youngsters are turning to rings made of platinum for their engagement and wedding. There is nothing like sealing your relationship with that special someone with rings that would never tarnish. Flaunting the white lustre for weddings and even for daily wear is now the latest fad among the people. Wonderfully precious Platinum is a supple, flexible, lustrous, silverwhite and a chemically inactive metal. No other jewelry metal is as long lasting and wonderfully precious with its understated elegance and beautiful design. Platinum is harder, heavier and more valuable than gold, when polished or matt finished with a solitaire it looks great. Platinum does not change shape or wear away so precious stones are held firmly and securely. Found in very few places
around the world, platinum is 30 times more rare than gold. Hence platinum has a snob value like no other. As per market reports the demand of platinum and diamond Jewelry is very high this year. It is a wonderfully rare and wonderfully precious item that makes it desirable for the Richie rich. Platinum is also wonderful for people with sensitive skin as its hypoallergenic properties make it available to wear to anyone. Its ability not to tarnish makes it one of the world’s strongest jewelry products. Light and lustrous metal With lightweight jewelry being the order of the day, the fashion conscious in the city has turned to the pristine metal to add sparkle to their attire. According to Platinum Guild International, sales of platinum have increased at the retail level and even remotely-located jewellers have shown interest in getting into the world of platinum. While earlier most of us admired the beautiful metal from afar, now we can catch the trend early and own a sensational piece of silvery-white jewelry for the years to come. Inspire the designers Platinum, a metal that is naturally white, does not tarnish over time and can withstand high pressure and temperature. As a result, it requires a skilled hand to craft a piece of platinum jewelry. Even though platinum is denser than other metals, it can be drawn into fine threads and can withstand high levels of tension, thereby giving the jewelry greater freedom in terms of design possibilities. Among the main advantages of platinum for jewelry fabrication are its strength and resistance to tarnish. It can be repeatedly heated and cooled without hardening and oxidation effects, while even the most slender sections of platinum permanently retain their shape, providing a secure setting for diamonds and giving jewelry designers a freedom of invention not always possible with other materials. Environmental cost of Tobacco and Health Risk Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC
Environmental cost of Tobacco Smoking kills 7 million people a year, and it scars the planet through deforestation, pollution and littering. Details of the environmental cost of tobacco are revealed in a Study released by the World Health Organization, adding to the well-known costs to global health, which translate to a yearly loss of $1.4 trillion in health-care expenses and Loss of Productivity From crop to pack, tobacco commands an intensive use of Resources and forces the release of harmful chemicals in the soil and waterways, as well as significant amounts of greenhouse gases. Its leftovers linger, as tobacco litter is the biggest component of litter worldwide. “Tobacco not only produces lung cancer in people, but it is a cancer to the lungs of the Earth,” said Dr. Armando Peruga, who previously coordinated the WHO Tobacco Free Initiative and now works as a consultant. He reviewed the new Report for WHO Commercial tobacco farming is a worldwide industry that involves 124 countries and occupies 4.3 million hectares of agricultural land. About 90% of it takes place in low-income countries, with China, Brazil and India as the largest producers. Because tobacco is often a monocrop -- grown without being rotated with other crops -- the plants and the soil are weak in natural defenses and require larger amounts of chemicals for growth and protection from pests. “Tobacco also takes away a lot of nutrients from the soil and requires massive amounts of fertilizer, a process that leads to degradation of the

land and desertification, with negative consequences for biodiversity and wildlife,” Peruga said. The use of chemicals directly impacts the health of farmers, 60% to 70% of whom are women. This is especially prominent in low- and middleincome countries, where some compounds that are banned in high-income countries are still used. 300 cigarettes = one tree Farming also uses a surprisingly large amount of wood, rendering tobacco a driver of deforestation, one of the leading causes of climate change. About 11.4 million metric tonnes of wood are utilized annually for curing: the drying of the tobacco leaf, which is achieved through various methods, including wood fires. That’s the equivalent of one tree for every 300 cigarettes, or 1.5 cartons. This adds to the impact of plantations on forest land, which the study describes as a significant cause for concern, citing “evidence of substantial, and largely irreversible, losses of trees and other plant species cause by tobacco farming.” Deadly gases In 2012, 967 million daily smokers consumed approximately 6.25 trillion cigarettes worldwide, the WHO
/saentertainmentnewsmagazine
@ansalmedia
estimates.”That means about 6,000 metric tonnes of formaldehyde and 47,000 metric tonnes of nicotine are released into the environment,” Peruga said. Tobacco smoke contains about 4,000 chemicals, at least 250 of which are known to be harmful. It also contains climate-warming carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxides. “The combination of greenhouse gases from combustion is equivalent to about 1.5 million vehicles driven annually,” Peruga said. Secondhand smoke is particularly deadly: It contains twice as much nicotine and 147 times more ammonia than so-called mainstream smoke, leading to close to 1 million deaths annually, 28% of them are Children Some of these pollutants remain in the environment (and our homes) as “third-hand smoke,” accumulating in dust and surfaces indoors, and in landfills. Some, like nicotine, even resist treatment, polluting waterways and potentially contaminating water used for consumption, the study notes. Non biodegradable Litter Tobacco litter is the most common type of litter by count worldwide. “We calculate that two-thirds of every cigarette ends up as litter,” Peruga said.
/saentertainmentnewsmagazine
/saentertainment_news_magazine
The litter is laced with chemicals including arsenic and heavy metals, which can end up in the water supply. Cigarette butts are not biodegradable, and tossing one on the ground is still considered a socially acceptable form of littering in many countries. The WHO estimates that between 340 million and 680 million kilograms of tobacco waste are thrown away every year, and cigarette butts account for 30% to 40% of all items collected in coastal and urban clean-ups. “In addition to that, there are 2 million tons of paper, foil, ink and glue used for the packaging,” Peruga said. “Tobacco threatens us all,” WHO Director-General Margaret Chan said in a note. “It exacerbates poverty, reduces economic productivity, contributes to poor household food choices, and pollutes indoor air.” Let Us Explore What Harm Cigarette Smoking does to our Body Cigarette smoking harms nearly every organ of the body, causes many diseases, and reduces the health of smokers in general Quitting smoking lowers your risk for smoking-related diseases and can add years to your life Smoking causes more deaths each year than the following causes combined. Why you should practice
Pranayama every day P
ranayama is a practice that dwells into giving energy to every cell of our body. It is a Sanskrit word which means ‘mastery of life force’ or quite literally, to draw out life force or the breath that sustains our body. It may seem simple, but includes regular training. According to yogic science, the aim of Pranayama is to regulate and guide the life force. It typically includes the practice of correct breathing. Since Pranayama requires you to breathe right, it involves all body parts. This means that fresh oxygen reaches every organ of your body. Regular practice of Pranayama has the following benefits:
1. It is known to purify as many as 80,000 nerves in the body. Since it balances out the energy flow of the body, Pranayama is known to affect our overall wellbeing. There are many health as well medical practitioners that recommend the practice daily. It is said that this consistent practice brings with it a steady mind and a disease-free body. 2. Many have dismissed yoga for ‘just another meditation practice’; however, Pranayama is a practice that can help you achieve physical fitness. Since, oxygen is reaching all your organs, it balances digestive system and gives a natural glow to your skin. It is known to increase vitality of a person. 3. Pranayama also builds mental health when it comes to concentration, memory and stress reduction. Our mind is a powerful tool that can guide what our entire day will look like. It helps bring serenity to our mental nerves as it increases oxygen supply in the body. This means that blood circulation increases and helps the mind to relieve stress.
turn releases hormones that relax the body completely. Along with blood pressure, severe issues like diabetes and depression can also be helped with the regular practice.
5. Many studies have proven that Pranayama can increase life span of a person. This is because it helps a person to breathe systematically. The main problem with many of us is how we breathe. According to yogic philosophy, “our longevity depends on our breathing rate.” 6. Pranayama is great for those who want to lose weight. This is because it helps you in taking control of your body. When we start practicing it regularly, our craving for many foods decreases as it starts eliminating the imbalances in our body. When our body is in a tired, fatigued state, we tend to eat unhealthy foods. However, practicising Pranayama balances and increase our awareness towards the food that we consume. How to do Pranayama: 1. Sit in a cross-legged position on your yoga matt/ folded sheet. 2. Close your right nostril with your thumb. 3. Inhale from your left nostril. Remember to keep your back straight, body relaxed and the left hand on your left knee. 4. Next, close your left nostril with your ring finger of your right hand, and then release breath from the right nostril. 5. Repeat the same for 15 minutes. Take a break every 5 minutes, if needed. Cortsey: TNN
4. For those suffering with high blood pressure problems, Pranayama is an ideal practice for them. Since blood pressure spikes at an increased speed in this condition, it helps bringing this sudden rush in control. Since Pranayama is a meditative state, it calms body and in

Your parents may expect from you, different things than other parents do. Try to successfully figure out your parents’ expectations and try to exceed them. If they are angry with you, try to understand why they are? Accept responsibility for your actions that led to their anger, and take remedial measures with self -imposed discipline without complaint. Visualise and learn what you can do to be considerate of them. Below are some suggestions for you depending on your age and the cycle of life you are in:Regularly do your housework /chores: Your parents

How To Respect Our Parents And Keep Them At
Cloud Nine……
Treat others like you want to be treated. If you would not like to be treated or talked to in a certain way, do not do that to your parents and others. Your parents fervently expect that their own children and grandchildren should treat them , by the same caring way they treat or treated their parents. expect that you do your stuff yourself. Take care of yourself, to the extent possible. Take care of the cleanliness of your room et al. This is a great way to show your parents, you care about their concerns. Do your chores without being asked to. That burgeoning desire to help yourself will –without failbe much appreciated by your reverend parents. Do more than you are asked to do: If your weekly chore is to iron your clothes, then iron that of parents and other family members too. That will lighten the burden off your parents and really mean a great thing to them. That will be an icing on the cake. Help your parents in and around the house: your dad is cutting the grass outside the house, go grab the lawnmower and help him and age permitting. If your mom is mopping the floor, take the mop from her and let her get a break. Your parents are doing a lot, and it would make them happy if you were considerate of all that they do. Do well in studies: The biggest relief one can give to parents is by focussing on the studies. So go to school/college/ university

regularly. Study every day and dedicate yourself to your studies. Do not skip school. This could create a plethora of problems for yourself and your parents. If you have to skip a class for something, tell your parents in advance before the institution tell them. In case you are struggling in a subject, share with your parents first. And get their help, instead of hiding it or just giving up. Deal this with maturity as you really care about your performance at school. Be good in extra-curricular activities: Find out what you like to do and are being good at. Remember that you do not have to be the best. Your parents will be happy just knowing you are trying your level best. Communicate freely with your parents: There should not be any block in communication. If you have a different opinion on any issues, discuss in a cool, calm, composed and collected manner. Difference of opinion is natural and must be respected on both sides. Be a good listener: Parents have reasons, why they tell you to do things or set rules. Listening to them will help you to understand their logic and benefit from their chequered experi-

ence. If you have questions, just ask them and be open to their perspective. But mutual respect must not be compromised. Respect house rules. If you know your parents would be uncomfortable with you doing something in the house, and then opt to not do it. If they do not like alcohol in the house, only drink when you are socially out. Better to tell them what you are doing outside? Avoid arguments: Due to generation gap and changed scenario, you may not always agree with your parent’s way of doing things, but you must respect it. Experts say, please do not force your way of doing things on them in their own home. Though-on occasions- argument happens, and then talk to your parents, on the subject under reference, after at least 72 hrs. or when you feel both sides have cooled off. If you try and talk to them during the heat of the moment, it may further aggravate the issue. Unequivocally, admit your wrongs. It is easy to blame the other person for doing something wrong to you, but you also must consider how you contributed to the problem. You have
/saentertainment_news_magazine
to be more mature and own up to your mistakes. Maturity comes with positive attitude and not by aging. By admitting your mistakes you will be able to keep a happy relationship between you and your parents. Do not defend yourself to the point where you are not able to learn from your mistakes. Be a daily learner. Respect the space: Your parents spent many years raising you. Now, they probably want some emotional time to themselves. A healthy sense of space from you will keep your parents happy. If they are in a room watching TV, let them do so in camera. Befriend them: You are at a different phase in your life than your parents. As an adult, you can enjoy a mature relationship with your parents. Try activities with them. For example, watch a family movie or a sports event or help in preparing food. Since you live together, you will have plenty of time to spend together in a happy manner. Try and make it as relaxing as possible. That will be an icing on the cake. Cont. on Pg 52

Cont. from Pg 50 Learn to confide in them. As a teen, you may not be willing to discuss everything with your parents, yet wherever feasible, be bold enough to discuss and benefit from an advice that will be quite useful. Do not forget, your parents are more experienced down the lane. Letting them be of help will keep them close to your interest and engaged towards best solution. Be sincere to your parents: Being sincere and straight forward with your parents, will go a long way in making your parents feel as if you understand them. That always lay a foundation for a happier relationship. When parents are living separately and independently: Needless to add that your parents always want to talk to you. Call them to see how they are faring. Make them feel that you care and understand them and vice versa. Set a weekly schedule to call or visit to touch base. Following points can help in strengthening this sacred relationship: 4 Try to talk to both the parents 4Regularly visit them 4 Regularly text them or talk to them so that they feel you remember them. 4 Help them to be mobile, to keep up their appointments, if need be. 4 Help them keep their appointments and buy their groceries. 4 Give them gifts they need in

Offer emotional support wherever warranted. If your mother is worried about a health issue or your father has stress at work, hear them out and offer them encouragement and any suggestion you think is helpful. Do not take advantage of their kindness, patience, and generosity with you. If so, that can cause perennial tension in your relationship. Make it easier on yourself by honouring that they have the final say within their own house. This will ease any distress and keep your parents as happy as a clam.

All this while, the three actors have been busy shooting their other films as well, while King Khan did shoot some portions of the film, Katrina and Anushka will soon join him as they wrap up shooting for their current films. Speaking about the same at a promotional event, Anushka mentioned, “I’ll start that after I’ve wrapped up Pari. She continued, “With Shah Rukh this will be my fourth film, the maximum I have worked with any actor. I have a great professional relationship with him and Aanand L Rai is a director I have always appreciated.” Sources inform that Anushka and Katrina won’t really have confrontation scene together in the film but their individual scenes with Srk in the film. An informer told, “In the movie, Anushka plays a character, who is in love with Shah Rukh and is an ordinary village girl. SRK’s character is in love with Katrina, who plays an actress in the film. The story has been altered a lot from its first script to now, and there is absolutely no interaction between the two ladies.” The film is produced by Red Chillies Entertainment, and is slated to release on December 21, 2018. Tom Cruise’s film in legal trouble over plane crash deaths
T
he producers of Tom Cruisestarrer “American Made” are being sued by the families of two men who died in a September 2015 plane crash on the film’s set.Three of the pilots hired for the movie were involved in a plane crash during filming when their twin-engine Piper Smith Aerostar 600 went down in the mountains. Alan Purwin and Carlos Berl died at the scene, while Jimmy Lee Garland was left without feeling in the lower half of his body. Purwin and Berl’s families are both suing the producers -- Imagine Entertainment, Vendian Entertainment and Cross Creek Pictures -- for wrongful death and damages, according to court documents obtained by people. com. They allege that the production companies ignored safety procedures before the flight in order to save time and money. The families are also suing each other, with Berl’s family filing
a suit against Garland, the only survivor. There is uncertainty as to who was actually flying the small aircraft. Berl’s family’s suit names Garland, the survivor, as the pilot - a claim Garland denied to The Hollywood Reporter, saying he was there “as a mechanic”. The Berl family suit alleges that the flight was “rushed” in order to save money because the movie was “behind schedule”, reports people.com. Furthermore, the suit alleges that the terrain over which the plane flew was “unsuitably difficult for such an instructional” flight, especially considering it was allegedly rushed, unscheduled and had “limited flight data and weather instrumentation” onboard the aircraft. The lawyer representing Berl’s family said they hope their lawsuit establishes stricter regulations on safety. Courtesy: IANS
Priyanka Chopra to play yoga ambassador in her next Hollywood rom-com
Film industry is in a sad state, says Naomi Watts
A
fter making bad look sexy in Baywatch with her character Victoria Leeds, Priyanka Chopra will be seen alongside Rebel Wilson, Liam Hemsworth and Adam Devine in her second Hollywood film Isn’t It Romantic?, as a yoga ambassador. The production of the romantic comedy is underway. Principal photography has begun on Isn’t It Romantic?, under the direction of Todd Strauss-Schulson, read a statement. The film follows the life of a New York City architect Natalie, who works hard to get noticed at her job, but is more likely to be asked to deliver coffee and bagels than to design the city’s next skyscraper. She has an encounter with a mugger that renders her unconscious, waking to discover that her life has suddenly become her worst nightmare. Rebel Wilson stars as Natalie, alongside Liam Hemsworth as Blake, a handsome client; Adam Devine, as her earnest best friend, Josh; and Priyanka as yoga ambassador Isabella. Strauss-Schulson is helming the project from a screenplay by Erin Cardillo, Dana Fox and Katie Silberman, and Paula Pell. The filming is taking place in and around New York City. The film is set for release beginning Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2019.
Isn’t It Romantic? is Priyanka’s third Hollywood project after Baywatch, which released earlier this year, and A Kid Like Jake that is slated for a 2018 release. Baywatch marked Priyanka’s Hollywood debut. While the film was panned

aomi Watts has slammed film industry for its sad content. The 48-year-old actress, who can currently be seen in Netflix series Gypsy, believes television has become a far more adventurous medium than film, The Times reported. “I definitely noticed that a lot of great writing was taking place in the TV format now, probably because of the sad state of the film industry and how all the films getting made are mostly in the franchise world, or superheroes or big comedy blockbuster-type movies. “Since the film industry was bottoming out, all the writers moved over to TV and we have to follow those stories, those writers…The female-driven drama writers moved to TV, and that is where a lot of us have ended up going, to get the storytelling,” Watts says. Earlier the actor told People magazine,”I feel I’m in a good place in my life and I want to make sure my kids are healthy, my kids are happy and things are going to go well. Those are my hopes for me and for all of us.” Courtesy: PTI

Failure to capitalise on nature’s bounty
E
ndowed with picturesque landscapes, sterling beaches and nature’s generous gifts, the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago has sadly failed to realise its full potential as a tourism hub for India due to infrastructural inadequacies, lack of free enterprise and the fear psychosis of natural calamities. The group of 572 emerald islands in the Bay of Bengal, out of which only 36 are inhabited, is surely waiting to be discovered. With its exotic looking beaches and pristine islands having equally exotic names, wonderful opportunities for adventure sports like snorkelling and sea-walking and a vast succulent array of seafood delicacies that come cheaper than the vegetables brought from the mainland, the Andamans can compare with many other dream tourist destinations across the globe. One can laze around the enticing beaches at Havelock Islands, or Ross and Smith - the twin islands joined by a bewitching sandbar. Sea-bathing and sun-basking at the Corbyn’s Cove beach helps one to unwind and destress while the Hilltop Gallows on Viper Island and Port Blair’s Cellular Jail are sure to overwhelm the visitors with a sense of patriotism as the clock ticks back to the days of India’s freedom struggle. Before the infamous Cellular Jail came up in 1906, Viper Island was the
Advancement Backing Institute (SURABI), an NGO that imparts industrial and other training to people. Andaman Chamber of Commerce and Industry president G Bhasker pointed to other shortcomings. “We have so much potential in the fishing sector but we are not making much progress. Electronic communication is poor, there is lack of power, and transport facilities are inadequate. Once these problems are sorted out, there won’t be any dearth of enterprise,” said Bhasker.
jail house for convicts and freedom fighters of 1857, many of whom were sent to the gallows at the hilltop. The now-dilapidated red building stands testimony to the unbearable tortures and hardships inflicted by the British on the freedom fighters. But located in Zone V, the highest seismic zone, the islands are highly prone to quakes and frequent cyclones. The scars of the devastating 2004 Tsunami - which ravaged the economy and the population, with the unofficial death toll estimated at about 7,000 are still fresh. “Being prone to devastating cyclones, the people have developed a fear psychology. They opt for the safety
of government jobs. We lack the free spirit of enterprise here. Industries are very small and the opportunities are therefore very limited,” said the union territory’s Lieutenant Governor, Lt. General (retd) A.K. Singh. According to official estimates, the flow of tourists doubled to nearly 300,000 in 2012 from 130,000 in 2008-09. Less than 10 percent were foreign visitors, officials said. The tourism department however feels that the growth rate of even domestic tourists should have been much higher, considering attractions like the Radha Nagar beach - chosen as Asia’s best in 2004. “The tourist inflow has been growing, but not at the desired rate. The growth can be far more if we can improve the infrastructure, including connectivity and hospitality. Higher flight rates act as a hindrance,” Andaman Tourism Department Director P. Viswakannan said. Other stakeholders squarely blamed the lack of infrastructure and civic maintenance, especially on the cleanliness front, the bane of Indian tourist spots. “The region’s infrastructural deficiency makes it entirely dependent on the mainland.
