You may be already aware that we celebrate B.C. Day in the month of August. On this day, Canada celebrates its people who were essential in the development of the province, helping it reach the heights it has today. This day is dedicated to learning more about the culture and history of the place. We also celebrate Indian Independence Day on August 15. This day not only signifies India’s independence but also serves as an opportunity for the people of this diverse country to come together and celebrate their shared identity as a nation.

Moving on, in this Summer Special edition, we have an eclectic mix of content to keep you entertained and informed. Gearing up for B.C. Day celebrations

the first Monday of august is known as British columbia Day or B.c. Day in the province of British columbia.

It is a statutory holiday and gives Canadians in the province the chance to celebrate their achievements or relax with friends and family members.

History of British Columbia

Initially, the province which is now known as British Columbia was inhabited by Aboriginal groups of Canada. This changed in 1778, when the first English traveler, James Cook, arrived, paving the way for the British settlers. News of the gold rush reached the crown in 1858 and England decided to turn the region into a British colony. Now British Columbia, the province joined the Dominion of Canada in 1871.

An act focused on the contributions of essential people towards the development of the territory was introduced in 1974. This British Columbia Day Act included in the legislative assembly announced that this day will celebrate the key personalities of British Columbia who played a vital role in the history of British Columbia. Finally, the first British Columbia Day was observed in 1996.

Public Life on British Columbia Day in Canada

The Progressive Intercultural Community Services Society (PICS) is elated to announce the triumphant culmination of its highly anticipated Mega Job Fair, held in Surrey, BC. This year’s event, which ran for 6 hours, witnessed an astounding turnout, benefiting over 5000 registered job seekers in and around Surrey.

Connecting Job Seekers with Prominent Exhibitors

The Mega Job Fair presented a diverse array of employment opportunities from over 80 esteemed exhibitors, encompassing both private and public sectors. Notable exhibitors included BC Corrections, Vancouver Police,

ICBC, City of Vancouver, WorkBC, University Canada West, City of Surrey, SafeGen, and KPU, and Western Community College among others.

Pakistan Expo Vancouver 2023 to forge strong bilateral trade relationships

The Pakistan western Canada Trade Association (PWCTA) is hosting the Pakistan Expo Vancouver 2023, a grand showcase of Pakistani culture and trade in Vancouver. It is the first of its kind milestone event by the PWCTA and will take place in partnership with the Consulate General of Pakistan Vancouver from August 19th to August 20th at the iconic Pipe shop in the heart of the Shipyards District, North Vancouver.

If your answer is ‘none’, you’re either kidding or have been very lucky because there are people who claim to have experienced things that have almost scared them to death.

You still don’t believe? Well, you might want to read these hair-raising experiences of seven different people from seven famous tourist destinations in India.

The umbrella Man - shimla “It was a holiday in school and a friend and I had planned to chill at the Mall Road and have some snacks. However, by the time we reached Mall Road, it was already 7 pm. We had coffee, enjoyed clicking pictures and had amazing momos at a restaurant on The Ridge. At 9 pm, we started walking back to our respective homes. I had barely walked a few hundred metres when it started drizzling. I was at a section of a road which was very quiet and had no shops but some of the streetlights were still on.

As I walked further, I saw a man with an umbrella walking a few feet ahead of me. I thought it would be a good idea to ask if he would allow me to join him if he was going the same way. I walked faster but it seemed that I wasn’t fast enough. So I started jogging but I still couldn’t catch up with him. “Hello!” I shouted loudly and the man turned around. His age must have been somewhere in the late 60s but what surprised me was the fact that despite having an umbrella, he was completely drenched. He started walking again and this time I walked slowly. Perhaps, I didn’t want to be near him anymore.

He slowed down too. I walked

even more slowly and so did he. Finally, I stopped. There was complete silence. He had also stopped. I could feel the fear suffocating my thoughts. Just when I thought that I may not live long enough to share this experience, I heard a siren blaring and a police vehicle stopped behind me. They asked me what I was doing here alone. When I told them this story, they said I was alone. There was no one there with an umbrella and that I should stop sleepwalking.” -

What kind of earthquake was that? Or was it even an earthquake? Well, I couldn’t sleep after that and ended up watching TV the whole night.”

“I had heard many horror stories surrounding the Dumas Beach in Surat. I am not a daredevil but I am an adventurer who loves to travel. So, there I was, at the Dumas Beach on Christmas eve last year. Be it Marie Kondo’s wardrobe-focused tidying technique or Matilda Kahl’s choice to wear one outfit to work for three years, the trend of dressing up consciously and having a capsule wardrobe is gaining traction. Before we get into how to build a capsule wardrobe, let’s know what it entails.

A capsule wardrobe is an edit of clothing that has a long shelf life, is thoughtfully curated, and is interchangeable to make multiple outfits! A capsule wardrobe, in essence, helps you in creating an array of looks with a selected number of pieces.

The term capsule wardrobe was coined in the 1970s by Susie Faux, the owner of a London boutique called Wardrobe. Faux believed that a capsule wardrobe com-

prises a few essential pieces. These can be supplemented with seasonal additions.

Capsule wardrobes in this day and age are having a revival, largely due to an increase in public awareness. The consumer today is much more aware of the harmful effects of fast fashion on our planet and all living species.

A key tip to build a capsule wardrobe and reduce fast fashion consumption, Surabhi Chopra, founder of Surabhi Chopra Label says, “Clothes are often our armor that we do every day, or they are a means to celebrate festivities. The thought of having fewer pieces in your wardrobe can often be overwhelming. Therefore, start with an analysis of your lifestyle. To create a capsule wardrobe, you need to know what your personal style is

and what pieces will be most useful for the kind of lifestyle you lead. Try asking yourselves questions like, ‘Do I need work-specific clothes? Do I need more travel clothes? Do I need more formal wear?’ Consider all your needs so that you are better able to stick to the capsule wardrobe without any impulse purchases.”

“The second step is to declutter your wardrobe. Most of us have a habit of hoarding clothes. Therefore, take out everything you have in your closet and analyze every piece in accordance with your style and lifestyle. While building a capsule wardrobe, it is imperative to have quality pieces that are both fictional and versatile. Do not invest in pieces that will lose their charm after a few wears. The only way to combat fast fashion is to invest in clothing that is useful, practical and suits your lifestyle. A versatile piece of clothing can easily pair with other pieces, be styled in different ways, and be worn in different contexts. Think about the item’s weight, fabric quality, silhouette length, and, most importantly, how easy it is to maintain and wash. For an occasional treat, if you feel that for a particular occasion, you cannot use any of the garments in your capsule wardrobe, then renting something boring can be a great idea!

Although remember that a capsule wardrobe should be built slowly over time. Fast fashion fuels impulse purchases and rapid discards with its low prices and changing trends. This waste finds its way to landfills, where it results in low wages for the workforce and a heavy toll on the environment due to unethical and unsustainable manufacturing practices. It is estimated that the garment industry contributes to almost 10 per cent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Therefore, purchasing clothes just for the sake of trends or impulse comes at a price for the environment.

Nolan masterfully conveys Oppenheimer’s triumph & tragedy

The life of American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the most respected leader of the Manhattan Project, which developed the atomic bomb during World War II, has been the subject of a number of biographies, but history hasn’t been kind to him. His story still needs to be chronicled.

The epic biographical thriller ‘Oppenheimer’, written and directed by Christopher Nolan, gives us a fatalistic view of nuclear weapons, and the trauma that they entail. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning 2005 biography ‘American Prometheus’ by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, the film is about the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, who pioneered the study of the first nuclear weapons as part of the Manhattan Project, thereby ushering in the Atomic Age.

During World War II, Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves Jr. appoints Oppenheimer, along with a team of scientists, to work on the top-secret Manhattan Project. The mission gets completed on July 16, 1945, as they witness the world’s first nuclear explosion, and it forever changes the course of history.

The film begins with a reference from Greek mythology to Prometheus, who stole fire from the gods and gave it to men. For his action, the gods condemned him to being chained to a rock and tortured lifelong.

Thereafter, it shifts focus back and forth giving viewers a peek into the multifarious elements, namely, politics, the effects and limitless possibilities of science, the annihilation that war could bring, and Oppenheimer’s unbridled passion.

The narrative investigates the character of power, and how, if not balanced out, it could lead to shadowy Catch-22s without so much as an explanation for any conclusion in sight.

Interestingly, the three-hourlong film is not about the bomb as much as it is about the U.S. government’s decision and the subsequent bombings in Nagasaki and Hiroshima, and gives us a glimpse into all the paperwork that justified the morality that was ever questioned.

In the film, the physicist (Cillian Murphy) after starting his initial research as a young boy takes to quantum physics, and goes on to lead the Manhattan Project for which he was denounced and even scorned by the government. But being who he was, he neither compromised on his values and principles, nor did he stop dreaming.

Considering the biography ‘American Prometheus’ took 25 years to be completed and is a 600-page tome, encapsulating all of it in three hours is rather unfair. But then, Nolan strives to tell us how condemnable the development of nuclear weapons and their existence can be. It is also a story deeply germane to what the invention eventually does to change the history of the world. Oppenheimer spent his remaining years opposing the militarization of the very weapons he invented, and destroyed himself in the bargain.

Filmed in a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film, including sections in IMAX black-and-

white film photography, the film has utilized extensive practical effects and minimal computer-generated imagery.

Not made in a linear narrative, the protagonist’s life is shown in three main acts that are interwoven together. There are scenes from his college life, and later, two separate hearings, and of course, the process of creating the atomic bomb itself.

An important scene based on an insignificant meeting between Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) and Albert Einstein (Tom Conti) is almost missed until it appears that it is central to the narrative.

In a track shown there are different aspects of his life filmed. In one, there is a lot of criticism that Oppenheimer faces. Viewed from the perspective of Lewis Strauss (Robert Downey Jr.), a senior member of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, the encounter sparks intrigue, leading him to obsess over its content.

An agitated Strauss holds a serious grievance against Oppenheimer for seemingly badmouthing him to Einstein in a conversation he views from afar at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, and publicly dismisses his bete noir’s concerns regarding the export of isotopes.

By exploiting these allegations at a hearing intended to remove Oppenheimer from any position of political influence, he makes sure Oppenheimer’s security clearance is revoked. Alongside, Oppenheimer’s perceived communist ties and

affair with fellow physicist Jean Tatlock (played by Florence Pugh) lead to his public fall from grace.

Strauss’ personal grievances against Oppenheimer get exposed, but it also leads to the physicist’s downfall. This section named ‘Fusion’ is in black and white, and is followed by another ‘Fission’.

Switching back and forth between black and white and color, Nolan tries to depict the difference between the objective (black and white) and subjective (color) points of view. Actress Sheebha Chaddha, who is known for her work in films such as ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’, webseries ‘Mirzapur’, ‘Raees’, ‘Badhaai Ho’, ‘Gully Boy’ and others, has shared about the kind of music she likes to listen to. The actress said that she loves listening to Jazz and Indian classical music.

She said: “Old bollywood songs are great, just the black and whiteness of it is so innocent, so beautiful, I love that. So I think I am somebody who always felt like I really like music but put very little effort into it like finding or setting up a good music system at home.”

All you need to know about dementia in dogs

This syndrome correlates with the aging of the dog’s brain, which causes them to eventually lose their sharp awareness of their surroundings, learning capabilities, responsiveness and even memory.

The symptoms will first appear to be of a mild state; however, they will progress with time and unfortunately worsen and become more severe. This process is known as ‘Cognitive Decline’.

The signs of this condition are anxiety, restlessness, not wishing to play anymore, slow to learn new training, disorientation, decreased grooming, confusion, forgetting previous training, no control over urinating or defecating, sleep patterns

altered, decreased appetite, excessive licking, frustration and barking. According to statistics, it is seen that at least one out of every three dogs that are over the age of ten will display at least one sign of Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome. If you feel that your dog may be showing any of these signs, then your veterinarian can perform a full physical examination. He or she will also need a full history of when the symptom(s) initially presented themselves, in order to conduct a proper diagnosis of this condition. Other diagnostic measures may also be performed in order to rule out any other underlying causes for such exhibiting signs.

Canines that are diagnosed with Dog Dementia will then begin a long-term treatment of supportive care for this condition. Such care will consist of improving your dog’s living environment and health in order to maintain an ideal condition for improvement.

This will allow the Cognitive Decline to be delayed and not progress as quickly otherwise. Changes in exercise routine, playing time and also training, or needing to train again, will be introduced as well. Other adjustments that can be made to facilitate a dog with this condition is to provide night lights for your canine companion to navigate throughout the house easier in the dark. Place training pads near your dog so that there is a place for him or her to use the washroom in case of an emergency, where they cannot control their urination or bowel movement. Certain medications or behavioral treatments may also be advised by your veterinarian based on the individual case of your pet. Diet is also a key component to managing a better lifestyle. Certain supplements can also be added to the diet regiment in order to help with your dog’s cognitive function. Such as: Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Selenium, Beta Carotene, Carotenoids, Flavonoids, Omega-3 and Carnitine. Follow-up appointments with your veterinarian may be needed regularly.

How to take care of your furniture during rainy season w

hile there is a constant call for the warm daylight and wide-open windows at one time of the day, but at the same time there is a strong urge to shut down the door and windows at the other. The entire shell of the space looks out for a fresh aesthetic that delves into practical, re-imagined layouts, along with an indulgent choice of décor that speaks for the vibe of the season.
