BROTHERS AND SISTERS…. Nothing Quite Like A Sibling Bond:

O

ur parents, in many cases, leave soon and our kids and spouse come along late in our lives, but our siblings -a brother or a sister- are the only relativeswho are with us through the entire circle of our lives, though exceptions apply. A brother sister relationship is one of the most balanced relationships, I have ever experienced. Even now, as most of us, are separated by thousands of miles and aren’t able to physically see each other for most days of the year, I still feel more connected to them as ever. We may not speak all that often; we may not text at all, but I still know that he/she is

always there for the other one. Approximately four out of five grow up with a brother or sister. On medical front, most siblings only share approximately 50 per cent of the same genes, but the lifelong and perennial connection they feel often, has nothing to do with this biology. The connection may be a hard one to describe in a single word. It’s the comfort experienced from the core of the heart when you sit in the same room with your brother or sister, in an imagery silence, yet you both know how

i Happy Rakh

and what the other is feeling. World knows, beyond an iota of doubt, a brother or a sister is a helper of the first resort. Long live this pure relationship!

Because a sister has a brother, she always has a best friend in her life. She loves him more than the distance between them. And yet their reunion,on occasions, bring thrill in them -more than a reunion -with very close friends.

Spotlight: Sardar Sohi

Paramjit Singh Sohi nay

In theater artists make use of everything -gestures, sounds, words, love, hate anger, crying, screams, light, darkness –and rediscovers themselves, precisely at the point where themind requires a language to express its manifestations. This is how theatre and films touch human lives and thereby create or recreate all existing and possible characters in the society.

Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Health Coach of University of Victoria

A

s I met Sardar Paramjit Singh Sohi nay Sardar Sohi on the locale of local shoot of Punjabi Film Atte Di Chidi, in Surrey BC, I saw him at ease with all the artistes and others- the distinguished few. As I settled for deliberations with, Sardar Sohi, the first impression came to my mind was that this artiste felt settled and satisfied about his forays in his chosen field. As I walked the talk, Mr.Sohi, a 69 years young Scorpion, is in original was born in a village named Tibba in Sangrur Distt. He was born to parents Dr.Shivdev Singh (father) and Sardarni Saroop Kaur (mother). As they say coming events cast their shadows before; because one pursues his passion unknowingly. He did theatre for 12 years in succession. As a teenager he used to copy various roles played by actor Dharminder and Dara singh in front of a mirror Jagga Daku-a Dara singh film, was his first film he watched in a theatre. As they say, one is known by the company one keeps, he learned theatre in the company of Nasserudin Shah, Amrish Puri, Raj Babbar, Girija Shanker, Om and Gurdas Mann to quote a privileged few. To cap it all, he understood the nuances of playing theatre from doyens of Pollywood, husband-wife duo, Mr. Harpal Tiwana and Neena Tiwana. Both loved him from the core of their hearts; courtesy his passion for the craft, his constancy to the purpose and honesty of commitment. Towards his achievements, in early years of his life he did play prominent roles in • Loung da lishkara- a Film by Harpal Tiwana • Diva bale saari raat– a Film by Harpal Tiwana • Loha kutt– a play by Balwant Gargi • Chamkaur di garhi-a play by Dr. Harcharan Singh0 Taya Naara- a character played by Sardar Sohi in Loung da lishkara was a remark-

able one, which is still fresh in the minds of the viewers. In 1980-81 he played Maha Pandit and Lord Hanuman in a theatrical performance named Punjabi Ramayan. With alacrity, poise, pride, love and respect he repeatedly quoted the name of Tiwana duo as thearchitects of his career in theatre and films in Punjabi as well as Hindi. As a mark of respect, he owes his success to Tiwana’s. When I asked him in how many films he has worked; he was now quickly rummaging his chequered journey down the lane of time i.e. over 4 decades; and with a deep breath quoted that,” May be in over 100 films. I do not remember the exact count.” In 1987 he shifted to Mumbai and remained there till 2011. Then compelled by the love and affection for Punjab and her denizens he shifted back to Punjab again. During his stay in Mumbai spanning over 24 years he worked in various Hindi films and serials. To quote, a few, he worked in: • Elaan with Akshay Kumar • Divya Shakti with Ajay Devgun • Mirza Ghalib (serial) made by renowned lyricist, producer and Director Gulzar Sahib • Tehkikaat (serial) by Goldy anand At present he is passing through the best part of life. He is single, not ready to mingle. No

family baggage. His passion is his profession He is moving like a free bird and is very friendly. Looked like he left his ego back home in India. Tiwana duo’s two ventures into film making Long Da Lishkara and Diva Bale Sari Raat became landmarks in Punjabi cinema. Sohi worked in both films, because

as an artiste he ranked very high in their eyes. When asked in the next five years, where he see himself, calmly he stated,” I am there in every 2nd Punjabi film and want to work in succession and be very high in my area of specialization.” Long Live this lovely character!!!! sardar sohi plot nmbr-6,,Garg colony Isher ngr, gurudwara shaheed baba begoana road, post office GNE college,ludhiana-141006, phone 98763-60214

Once an artist performs or does a piece on the stage, he/she becomes or get known for thatpiece. I think that’s why some artists have stage names as you know. Towards an ocular proof, Gabbar Singh is a character being made immortal via Hindi film Sholay. Likewise, Paramjit was given the title name “Sardar Sohi” by his mentor Harpal Tiwana-who was one of the most prominent Punjabi playwrights of all time.

Make-up mistakes we often make

M

ost of us barely have time to spend even 10 minutes on our make-up every morning. Hence, it is important that we utilize those precious minutes like a pro and fix those make-up mistakes without making too much of a mess. Here’s what you can do... • More often than not, we end up with clumps of mascara on our eyelashes, which can be a pain to remove. Instead of trying to immediately remove it, wait a minute or two till it is dry and then peel off. This will prevent smudging. • Not all of us are blessed with thick, dark eyebrows and have to use eyebrow pencils/ mascaras to make them darker. But we often end up over-pencilling. Correct this by using a small eyebrow brush to comb your brows and apply the tiniest bit of concealer on the browbone and just above your brows. • We’ve all been guilty of applying too much of blush. Fix this by using a small sponge to gently remove the excess colour from the apples of your cheeks. Remember not to dab too hard or you might end up smudging the blush, making it Cortsey: TNN appear even darker than before.

TIMELY PROTECTION FROM THE ILL EFFECTS OF CANCER CancerGuard- a shield of protection

Sandeep Ahuja

W

e all yearn for a healthy and blissful life. But in the present materialistic times, irregular lifestyles, adulterated eatables, constant stress and exposure to harmful radiations have led to increasing instances of people inflicted with life-threatening diseases- the prominent one being ‘Cancer’. Summer of Sarees: The Ultimate Guide

Ritika Tiwari

T

Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist

he good old six yards is having a moment in the sun. Even with so many fashion choices for women, saree is a staple in Indian wear that is loved by people all across the world. No matter where you are or how the weather is, there are numerous saree styles and fabrics to inspire you and up your style quotient everyday. The summers call for a breezy version of the saree with a wispy fabric, loose drape and airy blouse. As we enter the summer season, let’s take a dive in and see how you can wear sarees fashionably without the heatwave getting in your way.

Fine fabrics When it’s summer, you are better off wearing a saree with a lightweight and breathable fabric. Get over the notion that you need to wear heavy embroidered sarees and a ton of jewellery to for a festive or wedding look. You can look just as great when you wear a simple gold tissue or sooti saree. For a bright summer festive look, go for luminous and light pastel shade sarees and pair them up with white jewellery like pearls or kundans. When it comes to picking fabrics in summers, it’s all about staying comfortable and fuss free. Sarees and summers go well together since it gives you strategic vents to stay breezy all throughout the day. Here are some fabrics for the summer that you should consider:

Cotton: With the small hollow gaps in cotton that allows the fabric to absorb and release perspiration, it is perfect for summers. You can either wear crisp pure cotton sarees when you have time for proper ironing and draping, or you can go for a cotton blend that are just as lightweight but easier to drape. Linen: Extracted from flax plants, linen offers great durability and breathability. Since its over three times stronger fabric than cotton, it is extremely lightweight and easily washable as well. If you are going for a day event, nothing would look better than a carefully draped linen saree.

Sheer: Unlike other heavy fabrics, sheer is extremely breezy and it doesn’t stick to you at all. It also adds an element of elegance and femininity to Indian outfits. To balance both sheer

10

AUGUST 2018

and traditional elements, you can wear a saree with sheer panels or blouse sleeves.

Chiffon: Much like sheer, chiffon is also completely soft and lightweight fabric, making it a choice for a summer saree. Since it hardly creases and comes in several variations, a chiffon saree can be your best friend in the summer, whether you are going to a small lunch or a wedding reception.

Get creative with the drape

We have seen a lot of variations in blouse designs over the years -- From finely embroidered and traditional ones to t-shirt blouses, tube tops, waistcoats, tank tops, and even shirts. But most women aren’t

willing to experiment with the drape so much just because they think it would take a much longer time than the standard ‘nivi’ drape. But the true power of saree lies in its versatility and draping. When you are already opting for lightweight fabrics in the summer, they make for easy draping, giving you the room to experiment more. Of course, safety pins are your best friends when you are experimenting with different drapes, so make sure you pin up everything well.

Experiment with accessories Style your sarees with a tuxedo jacket to give your outfit a power dressing feel. You can also take a

simple saree and pair it with jeans, palazzos, trousers, or your favourite cropped t-shirt. When you are experimenting, make sure to create a finely pleated pallu to go over your shoulder so that there isn’t any extra fabric hanging and you can easily move around. For a more defined waist, you can also tie a belly chain around the saree pallu. While you keep the saree colours light, you can use bright colours for the blouse, motifs or your footwear to make your outfit stand out. This summer, make saree your best friend and have a cool and breezy time

Priyanka Chopra: I love the idea of getting married

A

ctors Priyanka Chopra, who is reportedly dating American singer Nick Jonas, says her marital status will not affect her feminist opinions, and she would like to get married someday. The 35-year-old actor spoke about the things that bring her joy in life and love at a Saks x Vogue event at Wolffer Estate Vineyards in the Hamptons, reports etonline.com. “I love the idea of getting married. I totally want to get married at some point,” Priyanka said. “And I don’t think marriage makes you smaller or bigger or more feminist or not. Feminism basically is women saying give us our own choices without judging us. That’s all it is. It’s not about berating someone. It’s not about proving a point. I totally would love to get married,” she added. Priyanka calls herself “super romantic”. “I’m super mushy, and I think why not? You know, when you love someone or when you care about somebody making them feel special and giving attention is the most important thing.” The actor feels “most beautiful” when she is happy. “I really feel like the best thing a woman can wear is her confidence. Your clothes, your shoes, your bags, all of that is like, that’s the packaging. But when you have confidence, the

world buys whatever you sell.” “I’ve been very lucky in that department. I’ve had very special things done for me… I like thoughtful things done for me. I’m not the chocolate and flowers kind of girl,” the actor added. Priyanka is will soon begin shooting for Bharat with co-star Salman Khan. She will also be seen in The Sky is Pink with Farhan Akhtar. Courtesy: IANS

ctor Kajol says there is no place for fear in her profession as people expect them to be perfect all the time. “I feel that in this profession and in this field, we are not allowed to have fears of any sort. We are supposed to kind of just go out there be perfect, incredible, amazing and not have any faults. We are supposed to be perfect all the time,” Kajol told IANS in a recorded response. “I am very clear on the fact that we all are imperfect. Not only me, we all are imperfect and we all are humans and we have a right to be human as much as we can.” The actor says she has started embracing her fears. “I have a lot of doubts… ‘Can I do this or not, should I do this or should I not?’ Especially, when the stage is big and many people are looking at you, many people are judging you and there is so much of critic happening.” “So, I think yes, you need to have faith in them on a daily basis. You have to calm them down and work through them.” Kajol, daughter of actor Tanuja, made her Hindi film debut with Rahul Rawail’s Bekhudi in 1992 and was known as the most natural actor of the 1990s. She was always clear what type of roles she wanted to do, the genres she wanted to explore and she was confident about taking a break to enjoy family time. She went on to do projects like Yeh Dillagi, Karan Arjun, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Bambai Ka Babu, Gupt: The Hidden Truth, Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, Ishq, Dushman, Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha, Raju Chacha and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… — some bombed and some worked their magic at the box office. Kajol dubbed for the Hindi version of Disney Pixar’s Incredibles 2. She lent her voice to the character of Helen Parr, Elastigirl. What next? “I would like to surprise myself. Currently, I am just challenging myself to go through the promotion of Eela.” said the actor. Courtesy: IANS

AUGUST 2018

t’s been a long journey for Anil Kapoor, who kicked-off his Bollywood career learning to play the harmonium for Woh Saat Din (1983), and is now taking to the trumpet in Fanney Khan. Even though 35 years divide the two films, Kapoor’s process of understanding the instruments has remained as tedious as it always was. Like he did for his debut film, he became proficient at playing the trumpet before filming for Fanney Khan commenced. The toil was essential, says Kapoor. “The trumpet is an integral part of my character. It stays with him throughout the movie as a prized possession. I was excited to learn a new instrument and took lessons from [professional player] Ramesh Kumar Gurung,” he reasons. Despite playing an array of instruments for his films - including the sitar when he was a child artiste starring in Tu Payal Mein Geet (1971) - it is the trumpet that he found the hardest to perform with. “Playing it, and acting whilst playing it, are two different things. It was challenging to emote while using the instrument. My character, Fanney, plays it when he is sad or happy. So I had to make it look real.” Kapoor has often gone to great lengths to pull off some of his most memorable musicals. His effort to learn the sitar had him travel from Chembur to Bandra daily when he was all of 12. As for learning the harmonium for Woh Saat Din, Kapoor trained in semi-classical music to do justice to his act. “I learned to play the harmonium from

Ustad Iqbal Ahmed Khan. Music has played an integral part in my career. I understood melody and rhythm through the characters I have played.” Courtesy: Mid Day

Mystic Mantra:

The art of meditation Swami Chaitanya Keerti

The writer, editor of Osho World, is the author of Mindfulness: The Master Key

W

e need to learn the art of meditation in our busy life- participating in everything can be a

meditation. The walking was a kind of meditation, a walking meditation -ust as Zen people do walking meditation. Most of us live our daily life with a certain routine-which is based on our environment of family, society, nationality, besides our own personal tendencies and weaknesses. We follow a certain way of living and we pick up certain habits to fit with our environment. These habits occupy our consciousness, consume our time and enslave our being. Gradually, it becomes very hard to become free from their bondage. We are expected to attend religious ceremonies and rituals, social functions, group partiesthis way we are forced to conform to everything that makes us a respectable member of the society. We develop certain habits of eating and drinking, smoking and gossiping. All this is so time-consuming that it drains our energy; we are not left with any time and space to be with ourselves. We find no time to meditate and to explore our own being. In such a situation, the question arises how to make space for meditation and become a free individual. Osho gives a clue in one Sufi story: Two disciples of a great master were walking in the garden of the master’s house. They were allowed to walk every day, morning, evening. The walking was a kind of meditation, a walking meditation -just as Zen people do walking meditation. You cannot sit for 24 hours- the legs need a little movement, the blood needs a little circulation — so in Zen and in Sufism both, you meditate for a few hours sitting and then you start meditating walking. But the meditation continues;

14

AUGUST 2018

walking or sitting, the inner current remains the same. They both were smokers. They both wanted to ask for the permission of the master, so they both decided, “Tomorrow, we’ll ask him. At the most, he will say no, but we are going to ask. And it doesn’t seem such a sacrilegious act to smoke in the garden; we will not be smoking in his house itself. ” The next day they met in the garden. One was furious-furious because the other was smoking -and he said, “What happened? I also asked, but he simply flatly refused and said no. And you are smoking?

Are you not abiding by his orders?” He said, “But he has said yes to me.” This looked very unjust. And the first said, “I will go and immediately inquire as to why he said no to me and yes to you.” The other said, “Wait a minute. Please tell me what you had asked.” He said, “What I had asked? I had asked a simple thing, “Can I smoke while meditating?” He said, “No! and he looked very angry.” The other started laughing; he said, “Now I know what is the matter. I asked, “Can I meditate while smoking? He said yes.”

It all depends. Just a little difference and life is totally something else. Now, there is a great difference. Asking, “Can I smoke while meditating?” is just ugly. But asking, “Can I meditate while smoking?”-it’s perfectly okay. Good! At least you will be meditating. We need to learn the art of meditation in our busy lifeparticipating in everything can be a meditation.

ission Impossible: Rogue Nation actor Rebecca Ferguson will still star alongside Ewan McGregor in Warner Bros’ film adaptation of Stephen King novel Doctor Sleep. Published in 2013, Doctor Sleep is the sequel to King’s The Shining, which was adapted in 1977 by Stanley Kubrick for a film by the same name, starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. The new film will feature McGregor as Danny Torrance, the grownup son of Nicholson, who in the original movie had psychic powers and watched his dad descend into a murderous rage, according to The Hollywood Reporter. However, the details of Ferguson’s character have not been revealed by the studio. The story follows Danny, who is an angry alcoholic dealing with his re-emerging psychic powers by working in a hospice, where he helps dying patients and earns the nickname Dr Sleep. Into his life enters Abra Stone, a little girl with psychic abilities of her own, and Torrance finds himself caught up in a battle with a group of murderous kidnappers that want her essence. Gerald’s Game director Mike Flanagan will helm the pic. Trevor Macy, Flanagan’s producing partner, is producing along with Jon Berg of Vertigo Entertainment. Ferguson was last seen in Fox’s The Greatest Showman and is currently awaiting the release of Mission: Impossible Fallout, which marks the sixth outing of Tom Cruise as the famed IMF operative Ethan Hunt. Written, co-produced and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the film also stars Simon Pegg, Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett, Ving Rhames, Sean Harris, Michelle Monaghan, and Alec Baldwin. Courtesy: PTI

Kylie Jenner is Forbes youngest self-made billionaire ever

Dwayne Johnson’s Jumanji 3 To Start Filming In 2019

R

eality TV star Kylie Jenner is on track to become the youngest self-made billionaire in the United States thanks to the booming cosmetics company she launched two years ago, Forbes magazine reported on Wednesday. Jenner, 20, half-sister of Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian, debuted Kylie Cosmetics in 2016 with $29 lip kits containing matching lipstick and lip liner and has since sold more than $630 million worth of makeup. Forbes said it valued her company at nearly $800 million and that Jenner owns 100 per cent of it. Kim Kardashian West has admitted she’s been turning to her half-sister Kylie Jenner for help on all the new “baby gadgets”. In mid july she posted her Forbes cover photo on Instagram with a caption that read “wow. i can’t believe I’m posting my very own @forbes cover.” Adding millions from TV programs, endorsements and after-tax dividends from her company, Forbes said Jenner was “conservatively” worth $900 million. Another year of growth would make her the youngest-self made billionaire ever, male or female, the magazine said. Jenner first grabbed the spotlight as part of the “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” reality TV show with her mother and siblings. Forbes estimated that Kim Kardashian, who has her own cosmetics, clothing and mobile games lines, is worth $350 million. In an interview with Forbes, Jenner

www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

credited social media for helping drive her success. “Social media is an amazing platform,” she said. “I have such easy access to my fans and my customers.” The youngest sibling of the KardashianJenner has a massive following of 110 million on Instagram. Kylie started the company due to her own insecurities over her lips which she wanted to change with lip-fillers. Now, her company includes lip products that are designed to help customers seem to have bigger lips with the help of filling and over-lining.

The filmmaker, who also helmed the last project in the franchise, said Sony Pictures will be creating a third installment of the popular movie format which they hope to begin filming in 2019. “The idea is to make the movie in the beginning of the year if we can get it all worked out. Part of the challenge of figuring out how (the emotional centre of the film) continues is to keep that alive in ways that feel earned... Mother’s attitude to baby during pregnancy affects child’s development • F eel , your little one smiling in the womb. • Feel her move in joyful motion.

Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Health Coach of University of Victoria

B

EYOUND AN IOTA OF DOUBT a“Mother” always connects with her baby during pregnancy, IN MORE THAN A ONE WAY. Such a mom to be, is more likely to interact in a more positive way with their infant after it is born. A mother’s emotions affect her unborn baby Experts suggest, in succession, that positive thinking can shape the body, rectify internally, and a healthier baby of a woman on the family way. A Medical dictionary, defines emotion as a mental and physical state, referring to the hormones and other molecules associated with emotion. Emotions are thoughts that we feel whole of our lives. A pregnant woman’s emotions are created based on the way she perceives her: • Pregnancy on the way, • Relationships • Baby shower plans • Nursery decoration • Work routine • Overall Health Persistent, consistnent thoughts of a mom to be, are the originator for her emotions. And her emotions are the precursor for the neurohormones. When a pregnant mother is fearful, anxious, stressed and stressful state, the stress hormones released into her bloodstream cross through the placenta (umbillical cord] to the baby. Hundreds of studies have confirmed that chemicals released by the pregnant mother’s body are transported into the womb and affect the unborn baby accordingly. Negative thoughts during this period are damaging: Negative thoughts very often, give a fear-based stress response. This stress activates the unborn child’s endocrine system and influences fetal brain development. Research has confirmed that children born to mothers who had intensely stressful pregnancies are more likely to have behavioral problems later in life . Studies show that mothers under extreme and constant stress are more likely to have babies who are premature, under weight, hyperactive in behaviour, irritable, and colicky. When passing through the placenta, the hormones of a mother experiencing chronic stress will deeplyalter the distribution of blood flow in her fetus and negatively

Thoughts may not be magical , but they cause the formation of specific hormones that have a very real effect on the body of mom to be and her unborn baby. So, during this period a woman has to be kept at ease, from every point of view, otherwise, it will affect the child to be born either way. influence the character of her developing child’s physiology i.e. the functioning of various parts of the body.. Positive thoughts are very advantageous: Conversely, positive maternal emotions have been shown to facilitate the health of the unborn child. Thoughts which infuse the developing baby with a sense of happiness or calm can set the stage for a balance, happy, and serene disposition throughout life. When you feel joyful, your body produces natural pleasure chemicals called endorphins and encephalins. When you are peaceful and relaxed, you release chemicals pari passu with prescription tranquilizers. Sans stress, your baby’s nervous system works smoothly. Creative visualization helps: Creative visualization is the fundamental technique underlying reality creation. It is the process of using thought power to consciously imagine, create and attract to yourself that which you intend to experience in your life. Mastering creative visualization grants you direct control over your thoughts at the subconscious level. While there are several ways to programme the subconscious mind, visualization is the most effective and its results in a most rapid manner. This form of mental imagery can program one’s subconscious thoughts, changing perceptions and responses from negative

to positive. Research has confirmed that imagery can alter blood flow, grow healthy cells, and destroy cancer cells. A pregnant mother can affect her unborn child’s genetic development.by Whether it’s called imagery, visualization, meditation, or hypnosis, decades of research have established this process for generating a multitude of tangible changes in the mental, emotional, and physical body. If you are a pregnant woman, you may try these visual exercises: In a place that is free of interruptions, close your eyes and practice seeing, feeling, hearing, smelling and even tasting your way into a relaxed feeling, perhaps bringing attention towards your developing baby. The key is to gently feel the ease as you flow through this imagery. Use the richness of your imagination, and go on a daydream. If other thoughts enter your mind, patiently return to your happy self, and healthy baby.. Practicing positive thoughts and feelings will branch neurons and wire parts of your brain to respond accordingly. The more you practice, the faster and better you will learn to retrieve those emotions. An example of more in depth guided imagery: • I magine your growing baby by closing your eyes. • Visualize what a healthy child looks like. • Sense what a healthy child feels like. • Hear what a healthy child sounds like. •H ow does his heart pump blood? • How do her arms are moving inside you

A pregnant woman’s thoughts have a physical connection to her unborn child. Everything the pregnant mother feels and thinks is communicated through neurohormones to her unborn child, just as surely as are alcohol and nicotine.

Negative thoughts are veryoften the root cause of a fear-based stress response: Stress activates the unborn child’s endocrine system and influences fetal brain development negatively. Children born to mothers who had intensely stressful pregnancies are more likely to have behavioral problems later in life.Studies show that mothers under extreme and constant stress are more likely to have babies who are premature, underweight, hyperactive, irritating, and colicky. As per a well-known expert, cell biologist and neuroscientist, Bruce Lipton, Ph.D. writes, “When passing through the placenta, the hormones of a mother experiencing chronic stress will profoundly alter the distribution of blood flow in her fetus and change the character of her developing child’s physiology.” Research has confirmed that imagery can alter blood flow, grow healthy cells, and destroy cancer cells. Lipton has even offered that a pregnant mother can affect her unborn child’s genetic development. Whether it’s called imagery, visualization, meditation, or hypnosis, decades of research have established this process for generating a multitude of tangible changes in the mental, emotional, and physical body. Bottomline: The journey through parenthood is filled with joy, but also elements of confusion, and sometimes worries creeps in. How a woman thinks about her baby while she’s pregnant could have a longterm impact on the child’s development. Studies have shown that parent-child interaction is crucial for a child’s development and learning later on. It will not be out of place to mention that a mother’s attitude towards her baby during pregnancy and her later interactionshas an established dovetailing. Increased awareness of the baby during pregnancy: Research has also shown that increased awareness of the baby during pregnancy is associated with healthy behaviors during pregnancy, such as giving up smoking, drugs, alcoholand junk food curtailment go a long way to safeguard the health of an incoming baby.

When the mom- to- be is cool, calm , composed ,collected , confident and centered, the baby is able to grow peacefully. A partner/husband and other members of the family must understand it.” www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

Discover your inner beauty you improve your skills or an outdoor activity that you have been thinking about doing for a long time, pick one that makes you feel happy and content because that is all that really matters.

hey say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You could have the latest fashion forward clothes and flawless makeup on, but if you don’t feel beautiful on the inside, then you will never feel good about how you look on the outside. That is why, before focusing on fixing your outside appearance, focus on the inside and try to feel happy from within. Here are some quick tips to discovering your inner beauty and happiness: 1- Embrace your physical features Society’s idea of beauty changes with every decade and century. Just because your body doesn’t align with the currently accepted idea of beauty, doesn’t mean you aren’t beautiful. The trends will always come and go. Instead of changing yourself according to the new trends, embrace your physical features. After all, beauty doesn’t depend on shapes or sizes, it depends on the kind of attitude you have towards your body. 2- Change your relationship with the mirror Instead of looking into the mirror to

www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

fix your hair or check if that annoying pimple has disappeared, look at your best aspects and focus on them. Pick out three best aspects of your body that you like, every day. As you look in the mirror, give positive affirmations and compliments to yourself. While you are doing that, don’t forget to smile. Initially it might feel weird talking to yourself in the mirror, but its just a part of the process which will eventually make you feel more confident and embrace your inner beauty. 3- Get rid of negativity According to research, women have on average 13 negative thoughts about their body everyday. To really feel beautiful from the inside, you need to reverse that negativity and fix your self image issues. Instead of being harsh /saentertainmentmagazine

and over critical about yourself, put your focus on all the positive things. 4- Confidence is the key Once you have deleted negative thoughts from your mind and braved in front of the mirror, it’s time to be a little more confident and stand taller. Put on a smile, work on your body posture and make sure you look people right in the eye when you meet them. If you don’t feel confident just yet, we recommend faking it till you really make it. Sometimes behaving as if you are confident can indeed make you feel more confident. 5- Develop hobbies Find activities that you are passionate about which have nothing to do with shopping, makeup, or mirrors. Whether its an online course that could help @sa entertainment

6- Weed out your friend circle There are two kinds of people in life -- One who will always give you positive compliments and support you no matter what, and others who will always pick out shortcomings in you even when you look perfect. To truly feel beautiful from the inside, you need to weed out those people from your life who bring nothing but negativity with them. Instead, focus on creating meaningful and nurturing relationships with people who have always seen the good in you and supported you through difficult times. Invest your energy, time, and money in people that make you feel glad that you are alive. 7 - Be yourself At some point or other in your life, you will feel the societal pressure to fit into the norms and change yourself just so everyone around you can easily accept you. While doing that may sound easy, it’s not. You may just end up being unhappy about who you have turned into. Instead, be unapologetically yourself. You should feel comfortable in your own skin. People will appreciate you for who you are, and if they can’t accept you for your true authentic self, then they shouldn’t even be in your life. Are you ready to find a new version of yourself by discovering your inner beauty?

A Girl in a Whirl Contd. from previous issue (Part 23) Take it Sonia, talk to your mom.”, my mom-in-law handed the phone over to me after saying so. I was awestruck with a shock to see my mother-in-law’s dramatic fakepleasing rhetorical talk with my mom. What a big-time liar and cheat she was! “Sonia…Sonia…” my mom’s voice was coming. Repeating his threat, Sam signalled me to talk. “Yes mom!”, responding to my mom, I couldn’t help crying. Sam immediately disconnected the phone. I begged him to let me talk to my mom. My mother-inlaw told me if I talked to my mom showing my miseries, I wouldn’t be allowed to talk to her. I promised I wouldn’t and begged to be allowed to speak with my mom. Sam called Ludhiana again. “Sat Sri Akal bhenji! God knows how the phone got disconnected. These touchscreen phones are so useless if the screen touches our ear they get disconnected. Take dear Sonia, talk to your mom.”, my motherin-law gave me the phone. It was on speaker mode. “How are you mom?”, I asked. “We are fine, Sonia. We were very much worried about you. Why didn’t you call us for so many days? What were you doing? Didn’t you care for us at all?...”, my mom asked me several questions in a

single breath. Before I replied, my sas glared at me signaling to speak as I was directed. “I just got so busy here and I couldn’t get time.”, I lied to my mom. “Sonia, I’m your mom. I can sense your truths and lies very well. Tell me truthfully what’s going on.”, my mom asked me. “Mom, I just …”, I didn’t know how to tell a perfect lie. Neither was I trained by my parents to do so. My mom-in-law snatched the phone from me and started talking to my mom, “Bhenji, they have just come from the market. Let them have dinner. I’ll later get her to talk to you in all details. Sat sri akal.”, my mom-in-law finished the talk and disconnected the phone. Both of them left the room. Lying on the bed, I kept crying. My stomach was aching. In a few minutes, Sam came up. His eyes were red with ire. He was looking at me angrily. He put his cell phone on charge on the side table of the bed and went to have a shower. I was having a premonition of a fight between us that evening. I was getting mentally prepared for any eventuality. I tried to use his phone but I couldn’t because it was locked. I saw a message at the bottom ‘Emergency calls only” Just then, the washroom door made a click. I kept the phone back immediately. Sam came out and slapped me very hard. “Your hands are in a lot of action

these days.”, Sam thundered. I jumped over to the other side of the bed. I threatened him to face dire consequences if he moved ahead. “I’ll break your both hands today that you used to push me down last night. Sam almost ran to pounce at me. I jumped back over the bed on the previous side, picked up Sam’s phone and went into the washroom. I locked the door from inside. Sam began banging on the washroom-door and saying bad words to me relating my mom and my sister. Hearing those bangs, perhaps my mom-in-law, fatherin-law, jeth and jethani also had come up. I could listen their voices clearly. Sam was also threatening to kill me besides breaking my limbs and bones. “That’s it. I’m not going to take it anymore!”, deciding this, I called 9-1-1. “Police, fire or ambulance?” “Police” I replied. “Your name?” “Sonia Brar” “What’s the matter?” My husband beating me.”, I tried to explain in incorrect English. The dispatcher could hear Sam’s banging at the door. “What language do you speak?” “Punjabi” I replied. “Your address?” I didn’t know the address. I tried to remember very hard, but I couldn’t. My eyes rested on the directory that I had forgotten on the toilet water tank. Contd. in next issue

Highlights Of Kids Play - Very First U21 World Cup of Kabaddi

The very first World Cup of Kabaddi which solely was for the youth of our community was held in Surrey, British Columbia on July 15, 2018. Kids Play Foundation, in partnership with New Canada Kabaddi Federation, hosted teams from all around the world at Bell Kabaddi Park for the very first U21 Kabaddi World Cup. Local U17 division and U10 division played with international players. We hosted this world class event to promote culture and sports in the lower mainland. There is an over representation of southeast Asian youth involved in drugs, gangs and crime. Much of this can be attributed to a loss of culture, language and self-respect, which gradually erodes identity. Through this World Cup event, not only did we reconnect youth with their culture, so that they can reestablish a link with their roots, but more importantly, Kabaddi is a positive activity which time and time again has proven to provide youth an outlet away from engaging in a criminal lifestyle. Amtoj Dhaliwal was among hundreds of players who played in Kids Play’s tournament at Bell Centre and noticed the concern about today’s youth as well. “They don’t really have a place of belonging. And they don’t fit in. So, this gives them a way to fit in.”

Are YOU tired most of the time? You know, I know, WE are…

Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun)

L

LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Health Coach of University of Victoria

et us understand the definition of energy: Food, which we eat in succession, day in and day out gives us energy. This energy helps us to keep our body healthy and perform our Activities of Daily Life [ADL]. When we eat big meal- i.e. breakfast, lunch, supper or dinner- the same is broken down by the digestive system. The liquid part in it, such as water, are absorbed through the stomach. The rest are absorbed through the small intestine. The body has three sources of energy to use namely: •C arbohydrates: which get converted to glucose -the body’s mainsource of energy. •P roteins which get converted to amino acids for use in the body as energy source • F ats which get converted to fatty acids for use in the body as energy source

Glucose is delivered to virtually every cell in the body by the bloodstream and is then burned with oxygen to produce energy[power] which we use for body to work. Blood serves as a Sky Train and deliver all energy sources and vitamins/ minerals to cells in every nook and corner of the body. Metabolically, Hormones control every step in this process; for example, the pancreas produce the hormone insulin,

One of the biggest risk factors for feeling tired all the time is being a “carbophilic,” meaning someone who added grains, refined carbs and sugary foods. This same person also doesn’t acquire enough healthy fats, proteins, vegetables and essential nutrients that support ongoing body energy- the fuel. Let us ponder over it and do not commit hara kiri.

AUGUST 2018

If you feel tired all the time, it is important to make a high-quality sleep — a top notch priority. But if you are reaching that eighthour threshold and still feel exhausted, your low energy level may be an indicator of an underlying problem which need to be examined with the help of your Physician.

which helps to control blood sugar levels. We normally ask ourselves, a question. “Why am I so tired?” Despite a 7 to 8- hour sleep in succession, things are not normal on health front. Fear lurks at the back of our minds that- may be, may be -something is wrong, somewhere in my body. Everyone knows that getting a good night’s sleep is important, though, few of us are not following it as day follows night. In this vying age of competition, we work extra hours for a better life and unknowingly- due to peer pressure- compromise on our health. Apart from sound sleep there are numerous factors that contribute to this conundrum namely; • Your diet, • Hormonal balance, • Exercise routine, • The number of mental stressors in your life • And of course, your genetics More so, stimulants like coffee, energy drinks, and external lights — including those emitted by electronic devices — interfere with our circadian rhythm i.e. our natural sleep/wake cycle. The net effect of all of these influences our hormone levels in one way or another. And many find it difficult to sleep at night. Moreover, daily stress, also leave us exhausted. The good part of this riddleis there are plenty of lifestyle fine-tunes that we can put into use in order to fight fatigue and reclaim our energy or health back. Let us find out the possible reasons for the Tiredness and Natural Remedies there of: Sedentary Lifestyle Sitting all the day, is very badfor our bodies and often causes stiffness, back pain and chronic headaches — plus fatigue, making you feel like you’re always tired! Your body is made to move, so when it doesn’t get regular activities, you can experiencetiredness and weight gain. Regular exercise, as per age bracketdefinitely helpunbalancing of hormones and improvement in insulin resistance. This help you to get better sleep, all of which are important for fighting a lack of energy.

Exercise, does wonders for the body by releasing endorphins, boosting your stamina and lifting your mood. Benefits of being Active: Exercise can actually help wake you up. After all, the daytime is meant for us to be active in our house and outdoors for at least 30 minutes a day … rather than cling to your office desk or be in the kitchen most of the time. One study conducted by the University of Georgia, for example, found that when adults who were initially sedentary began exercising lightly over the course of six weeks — just three days a week for about 20 minutes — they had more energy overall compared to when they first began. It helps many people regulate hormonal chemistry that allow them to sleep better at night and shun away terrible tiredness. How to Get Moving: • Brisk walking for 30 minutes for 5 days a week is enough to keep you energised • Try a standing desk or one that adjusts for standing and sitting position when at work • Plan regular outdoor activities or exercise right before or after work. • Take 5-minute stretch breaks for every hour of work.

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases USA, “If you have anemia, your body doesn’t get enough oxygen-rich blood. As a result, you may feel tired or weak. You may also experience other symptoms, such as shortness of breath, dizziness or headaches.

Blood Sugar Imbalance Most people have blood sugar imbalances that can be fixed, but they aren’t even aware that this is a major contributing factor to their health problems and lack of energy. If you’re always tired, your blood sugar may be the culprit. If without effort you have lost weight to the extent of 2.5 kg or more or you have a burning sensation in the sole of your feet’s may be, type 2 Diabetes is setting in. Time to see the Physician.Over time, imbalances in blood sugar can lead to serious diseases like type 2 diabetes, which is sadly taking the shape of an epidemic. In the U.S., presently, over 12 percent of the adult population is now considered diabeticaccording the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. As per Statistics Canada estimated diabetes prevalence is pegged at 3.4 million [ 9.3%] and estimated pre-diabetes prevalence [age20+] is 5.7 million [22.1%]. Time is ripe for us to wage a war against it at community level. City level and State level. Those who are taking their daily dietary habits lightly, by eating unmindfully, they -beyond an iota of doubt-are playing with their health and subconsciously escalate themselves to the terminal station of diabolical diseases – where there is no possible way to be back on the tails of normalcy.Kindly work on your eating habits, dear reader of eating and then sugar high and then sugar very low. This vicious circle goes on Stay active – and do not drink any liquid- for at least 30 minutes after a big meal. If your diet has complex carbohydrates, moderate protein and monounsaturated/polyunsaturated fat you will not feel sleepy and tired.” Natural Remedies for Blood Sugar Imbalances: To get blood sugar levels back under control, you’ll need to really reduce, or even to completely eliminate, all sources of added sugar/refined sugar from your diet. These include: • All sugary beverages — which are some of the worst culprits — like all soda, fruit juice, energy drinks, and sweetened coffee or tea beverages. Use stevia for sweetness instead of table sugar. • Packaged snacks like all cookies[ prepay wale biscuit, dear Punjabis], cakes, cereals and candy. • Even natural sweeteners like raw honey and maple syrup, which can still affect blood sugar levels. Raw honey in moderation is ok. The processed honey we buy from big stores is as bad as sugar. Stevia is a best choice though, because it is made from a green leaf which is 60 times sweeter than table sugar with Zero calories. • Also consider cutting back or eliminating grains, especially gluten-containing grains like wheat and wheat products (including “whole wheat”). These contain large amounts of carbohydrates that are broken down into sugar within a few minutes of consumption. All grains which have a protein named Gluten in them are not good. Why? Gluten make the carbohydrates in the grain break very easily and rush into blood stream and thereby increase blood sugar

level. High Blood Sugar level, most of the time can cause intestinal inflammation that affects hormones like cortisol[ stress hormone] and leptin[ hunger control hormone], leaving you feeling weak and tired. To check your inflammation level, go for a test named CRP test. • C onventional (nonorganic and pasteurized) cow’s milk and dairy products should also be eliminated. Stay away from dairy products that contain A1 casein, which is produced by conventional cows and found in most milk, yogurt and cheese that’s available in the grocery stores. When buying dairy, only purchase raw and organic kinds from pasture-raised animals. The milk we buy from stores is pasteurized and does not have all the nutrients in exact measure as pronounced on the product label, because pasteurizations kills most of it. Goat milk is better than Cow/buffalo milk. Poor Diet You’ve probably learned that almost all of the causes of your feeling like you’re always tired can be fixed by changing your diet. That’s because your diet ultimately impacts your: • Hormones, causing imbalances • Neurotransmitter function, which make you prone to anxiety or depression • Sleep cycles, making it hard to get enough restful REM 3 sleep • Day to day mood • Pessimistic outlook • Motivational level Causes of a Poor Diet Causing You to Be Tired: • Processed food eating habits • Sedentary lifestyle • Convenience • Other influences • Giving exercise a low-priority How to Correct a Poor Diet: Instead of becoming a victim of “postlunch sub conscious coma,” try changing your diet to incorporate more of these energy-promoting foods: • Eat Foods high in B vitamins, B vitamins are abundant mostly in protein-rich diets. Try having plenty of sources like grass-fed beef, wild-caught fish, cage-free organic eggs and poultry plus all kinds of green leafy vegetables. • Foods high in calcium, magnesium, selenium and zinc, which can all help you to relieve stress and get better sleep — these include unpasteurized organic dairy products, avocados, wild-caught salmon, green vegetables, nuts and seeds. • Healthy sources of fats, including omega-3 fatty acids — wild-caught fish, seeds, coconut and olive oil, avocados, and nuts can help stabilize hormones and your mood, so you sleep through the night better and fight

depressing thoughts, stress, and thyroid issues (such as hypothyroidism) or adrenal disorders Always try to limit or avoid the following: •H igh-sugar foods: Consuming too much sugar can negatively impact your energy by giving you blood “sugar highs” followed by “lows.” •P rocessed and refined flour: These “simple carbohydrate” foods act very similar to sugar in the body. They lead to fluctuations in blood sugar, mood swings, hormonal changes and food cravings. White bread and whole wheat bread have the same glycemic index. • E xcessive caffeine: Too much caffeine can cause anxiety and hinder your ability to sleep well, even if you stop drinking it in the afternoon. Caffeine can remain in your system for up to six hours, so if you are going to have some, curb your intake by around noon each day. Prefer green tea or oolong tea • T oo much alcohol: Alcohol may help you to fall asleep, but it also interferes with REM sleep (rapid eye movement sleep), which is the deepest sleep state that’s needed to feel rested the following day. It can also increase anxiety and make it hard for the body to manage stress. Poor Quality Sleep (Not Enough or Not Consistent) Poor quality sleep always makes you feel tired the following day. Most adults need between 7 to 9 hours of sleep consistently, each and every night, to feel their best, according to the National Sleep Foundation. If anyone likes to be in sleeping mode for over 9 years, it can be an iron deficiency. Check with your Doctor. Only 10 per cent people in the world feel fresh after a consistent sleep of 6 hours. Only; others need more Poor Sleep Causes are, poor/junk diet, continuous stress, staying up late, drinking alcohol over the limit, mood or hormone imbalance, chronic paintrauma or abuse, adrenal fatigue, GERD/acid reflux/digestive disorders. This list is suggestive. It is important to actively pursue healthy sleeping habits. Sleep deprivation studies repeatedly confirm a negative impact on mood, cognitive performance, and motor function,” state researchers from the Department of Neurology, Emory University School of Medicine. A power nap during the day for 20 to 30 minutes do rejuvenate the body. Those suffering from sleep apnea think that they actually get good sleep. To confirm whether or not you have sleep apnea, a sleep study test called the polysomnogram need to be performed. Those suffering from narcolepsy[a chronic neurological disorder that makes it difficult for the brain to control sleep-wake cycles need to see their doctor. This disorder adversely affects the quality of life, as symptoms include extreme drowsiness and falling asleep unwillingly during an activity like work or school and feel tired most of the time. Natural Ways to Get to Sleep Fast: •P ractice relaxation techniques that help you to unwind and fall asleep, such as journaling or reading. • T ake an Epsom salt [Lavender flavor] bath to soothe muscles and ease your mind. Make your you sit for at least 12 minutes in the stored tub water with this salt • T ake magnesium supplements in the range of 300–400 milligrams, which promote relaxation and relieve muscle pain. •U se essential oils such as lavender or frankincense. •A void sugary and carb-heavy meals before bed which can give you a “sugar high,” keeping you up. To avoid tiredness, check your hydration level per diem. To avoid dehydration, I drink only two drinks i.e. clean Tap water [ courtesy BC Hydro] and Coconut water. All energy drinks or sodas and colas are good for bad health. Health experts categorise it as Junk food, though manufacturers and venders call it part of a happy meal. What a hoax? bedtime consume one small apple and one tablespoon of peanut butter. Those who have an allergy from peanut can use almond butter. Stay away from Indian sweets Laddoos, Jalebis, Gulabjamun, Rasgulla, Burfi at this time. Also, do not eat watermelon and pine apple at this time as they are high glycemic food. • Turn off all electronics two hours or more before bed to avoid blue-light exposure, which can disturb the release of melatonin [sleep hormones] levels and make it hard for your mind to become sleepy. Anemia Anemia is one of the main reason for tiredness. Anemia is a condition where a person has a lower than normal level of red blood cells. Anemia is related to a low supply of oxygen reaching cells and tissues throughout the body. Some of Anemia symptoms are: feeling tired all the time, despite how much you sleep, aching muscles, being unable to concentrate, digestive issues, yellowing of skin, heart problems, chloasma and melasma. spleen dysfunction Causes of Anemia are: Anemia occurs when there’s a problem with red blood cells making hemoglobin, a protein that carries oxygen throughout the body, especially to the brain where it’s much needed. It’s connected to insufficient iron levels within the blood, in addition to low vitamin B12 and folate levels.Anemia can also be caused by a loss of blood or a diet that’s too low in those essential nutrients and, thus, hinder the body’s ability to make enough hemoglobin. Natural Remedies for Anemia: Anemia symptoms can be greatly reduced by improving your diet and including plenty of foods that are rich in iron, vitamin B12 and folate. These include: Liver (from beef, chicken etc.) that’s extremely high in iron and B vitamins. Blackstrap molasses, which a healthy natural sweetener high in iron. Foods high in vitamin C that help in iron absorption, such as citrus fruits and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage or cauliflower. Drink homemade orange/ lemon juice only made in a Nutri-Bullet type of juicer with fiber of orange in the in juice. Green leafy vegetables that have a significant amount of iron and folate, though iron therein being non-heme is not absorbed well like heme in non- veg options in our body.

SANJU MOVIE REVIEW Critic’s Rating: 4.0/5 Ranbir’s top gun act Sanju Story: Sanju explores some of the most crucial chapters from movie star Sanjay Dutt’s dramatic and controversial real life. It gives a lowdown on his tryst with drugs and his trials and tribulations in the Arms Acts case and the 1993 Mumbai blasts. Sanju Review: One man, many lives is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Sanjay Dutt. Rajkumar Hirani’s film presents a vivid and very dramatic look in this biopic of sorts. The film starts off with Sanjay Dutt (Ranbir Kapoor) wanting a writer for his biography even while he’s preparing to surrender himself to the Supreme Court’s judgement in the Arms Act case. A film writer fails him miserably, so Sanju turns to a more established writer Winnie (Anushka Sharma) to pen his biography. His confessions and recollections to Winnie are intimate and give us deep insights into the highs and lows of his life, which is nothing short of a roller-coaster ride. Like any Rajkumar Hirani film, Sanju blends humour with drama effortlessly. While it doesn’t reveal much about the protagonists’ relationships and marriages, it does tell a strong story of an unbreakable bond between a father, son and a best friend. In fact, Sanjay’s relationship with his father Sunil Dutt (Paresh Rawal) forms the major

40

AUGUST 2018

part of this story and some of the most heart wrenching and touching moments in the film belong to both of them. Manisha Koirala as Nargis Dutt (Sanju’s mother) has a brief role, but the scenes between the father, mother and son move you to tears. There’s also his best friend Kamlesh (Vicky Kaushal) who’s one of the most important characters in the graph of the story and he leaves a solid impact. Maanyata (Dia Mirza) his wife’s strong presence is felt right throughout the film, but his previous marriages have been completely left out of the narrative. Even the birth of his first child, daughter Trishala doesn’t feature in this heart-rending story. The ab-

sence of these aspects of Sanju’s life leave the viewer craving for a tad bit more. The first half is extremely gripping, with Sanju struggling with his inner demons. The second half is spent on elaborating his court cases and it reiterates the thought that he’s not a terrorist. The fact that Sanjay Dutt’s real life presents great material for a story on celluloid is unquestionable. Hirani beautifully taps into some deep emotions that keeps the audience drawn to the screen. Even though the film feels long, the film industry nostalgia and the many references to old Hindi film music keep you hooked on. AR Rahman, Rohan-Rohan and Vikram Montrose’s music sets mood right. Songs like Kar Har

Maidan Fateh and Ruby Ruby add to the experience of the film. The background score is top notch too. Presenting a biopic on a man with so many shades and one who’s lived a life of such extremes is a no mean feat. Hirani, in his signature style, takes you through Sanju’s remarkable journey with the finesse and commitment it needs. In the film, Sanju’s wife says that he’s the king of bad choices, and Hirani’s idea of making a film on his life has certainly paid off. Yes, there’s a lot missing, but even then, this is still an incredible story of a man and a movie star who made massive mistakes, walked through fire, survived it and lived one heck of a life. o, you have your outfit, shoes and bag all sorted. But have you given a thought to which necklace you should wear? V-neck tops Repeating the shape of your neckline is one of the simplest tricks to nail this look. Choosing to wear a v-shaped slim pendant is a good idea. This neckline is perfect to show off your pretty pendants. V-shaped chunky necklaces that draw attention to your cleavage also work. You must make sure that the neck-piece you wear finishes at least an inch above the ‘V’. A simple strand of pearls will also look good and give an understated, classy look.

Collared shirt Usually a slim choker or chain with a small pendant goes well with your collared button-ups. You can also pair them with statement necklaces, to get that unbeatable subtle, yet striking, look. Strapless dresses or tube tops Though chokers are most flattering when worn with strapless outfits, usually all kinds of jewellery complement this timeless neckline. Pair your strapless top with a contemporary choker. The straight cut of the outfit shows off your necklace and also helps give your neck a slender look by elongating it.

Square-necked outfits Multi-strand chokers, dramatic double strand necklaces work nicely with square necked tops. These necklines draw attention to your neck. Angular, geometric neckpieces compliment the square neck. Boat neck dresses and tops Long beaded necklaces look great with the boat neckline. This simple neckline draws attention to the neck-piece you will wear. Key points to remember: • When wearing open necklines, you must pick necklaces that fill the open space and match the neckline of the top you are wearing. • When wearing high necklines, you should pick necklaces that can balance the neckline of the garment.

Extend The Life Of Your Makeup In 5 Ways

T

he saddest part of a wellloved beauty product is when it comes to its expiry date and needs to be chucked into the trash. What hurts even worse is when a tender young product passes away long before its time. When makeup isn’t cared for properly, it can spoil much quicker than its expiry date. Especially when you’ve splurged a good chunk of your salary on it, the pain can truly be deep. Today, we’re telling you how you maximise your makeup products by extending its lifespan in 5 ways.

3. Wash Away Makeup brushes have a whole different system of caring for them as they can be as fussy as toddlers. However, a definite way to make them last longer is by washing them regularly. A simple solution of baby shampoo and oil can remove residue makeup and keep each bristle in good shape, rather than being brittle and ridden with bacteria. 4. Shake It Up Even if you aren’t using foundations or eyeliners on a daily basis, go through your makeup kit, hold the bottle securely within your palms and roll for a few seconds. Liquid products are made from numerous ingredients which separate when unused for very long. A good shake will combine the layers temporarily.

1. Store Well The most important thing to do when you purchase any kind of makeup is store it properly. Most commonly, that is in a cool, dry place that’s away from direct sunlight. Keep liquid makeup products like foundation or liquid lipstick standing upright. Powder and gel products can be placed flat. Ensure that your makeup is kept away from moisture or humidity, which can spoil the product quicker. 2. Tighten Up It may seem like a no-brainer but tightening the caps or lids of your makeup once you’ve used them is essential. If you leave them uncapped, you open up the product up to moisture, dust and

bacteria will can quicken the spoilage of products and even transfer it to your

face. Once you’ve applied it, tightly cap it and store inside.

5. Freeze It This may sound absurd to you but is frequently followed by many. The low temperature in your refrigerator can work well for certain products and prevent them from spoiling quicker by keeping them cool and of the ideal consistency. Products like nail polish, perfume and eye cream are best used 15 minutes after sticking them in the fridge. Cortsey: SWIRLSTER

Are you washing your face too much?

I

s there such a thing as over-washing your face? Yes, there certainly is! In the quest to keep your skin oil-free and germ-free, it’s easy to cross the line. But how exactly will washing your face too much affect your skin? Let’s find out. How often is too often? The optimal washing schedule is twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Washing your face in the morning helps slough off dead skin cells, making your skin look fresh. On the other hand, washing your face in the evening removes impurities accumulated through the day. If you engage in intense physical workouts, sweat profusely, or if your skin is subjected to excess dust or pollution, you can do with a third wash! The need for a third wash will depend on the weather too; you might not need one during monsoon or winter as much as you would in summer. Anything beyond this is too much! What happens when you over-wash? When you wash your face too much, you strip your skin of natural oils that are necessary to keep it healthy. If your skin becomes overly dry, your oil glands will automatically start producing more sebum, which can cause acne. Over-cleansing also means a damaged

www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

skin barrier. Cosmetic products that are meant to stay on the surface of the skin can now permeate into it, causing rashes or eczema. Environmental irritants like pollution and UV rays can further cause irritation and damage since your skin lacks protective oils. What to do? You can sport fresh, glowing skin all day without having to over-cleanse. Here are some skincare tips: • Use a gentle face wash that is free of oils, alcohol and fragrances. ourtesy: Femina

Heat related Health issues Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji

I

MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC

n summer we love to enjoy outdoors Sun is good for our health but we need to know. Heat Exhaustion & Heat Stroke. Symptoms Symptoms related to heat stroke or heat exhaustion can be very serious. Developing muscle cramping may be the first indication that you are developing a heat-related illness. Other symptoms include: A heat stroke can be much more serious that heat exhaustion. Causes The main cause of a heat-related illness is your body’s inability to cool itself. Sweat is your body’s natural tool for cooling you down. If you overexercise or work strenuously in hot weather or a heated room, your body may have difficulty producing enough sweat to keep you cool. Other causes of heat exhaustion include: • Dehydration • Wearing heavier, tight clothing • Consuming alcohol If you are experiencing heat exhaustion for an extended period of time, it can lead to heat stroke. Heat stroke can come on quickly if it is very hot or you are overexerting yourself. That’s why it’s important to begin treatment at the first signs of heat exhaustion. Factors Certain factors can increase your risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke, though anyone can develop either condition. The following factors can increase your risk for heat sensitivity: • Age. Infants and children under the age of 4 and adults aged 65 and older are at increased risk for heat-related illnesses. That is because your ability to regulate temperature is more difficult at these ages. • Prescription medications. Some medications used to treat high blood pressure or heart conditions may reduce your ability to stay hydrated. Dehydration can cause heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Possible Fainting Pale, Cold, Clammy Skin

• Obesity. Your body retains more heat when you weigh more. It can also be more difficult to cool your body down if you are overweight. • Sudden temperature changes. When you rapidly move from a colder to a warmer climate, such as going on vacation in a hotter location, your body may not be able to adjust to the warmer weather. You may have more difficulty regulating your body temperature as a result. • A high heat index. Heat index is a measurement that factors in humidity along with the outside temperature to determine how hot it feels to you and your body. If the humidity is high, your sweat evaporates more easily and you may have a harder time cooling yourself down. If the heat index is greater than 91°F(32.8°C), you should focus on prevention methods. Diagnosis Seek medical attention immediately if you believe you’re having a heat stroke. Your doctor will likely be able to diagnose heat exhaustion or heat stroke based on your symptoms, but they may decide to run tests to confirm the diagnosis or check for complications: • A blood test may be used to check your sodium or potassium levels to help determine if you are

a bath of cold ice water to lower your temperature quickly. They may also mist your skin with water, pack you in ice packs, or wrap you in a special cooling blanket. If the coldness causes you to shiver, your doctor may give you medications to stop the shivering. This might increase your body temperature. Here are some prevention tips:

dehydrated. • A sample of your urine may be taken. Dark yellow urine may be a sign of dehydration. • Muscle function tests may be performed. • Your doctor runs tests to check your kidney function. • X-rays and other imaging tests can be used to determine if you have any internal organ damage. Treatment If you begin experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion, try to find a cooler location if possible. For example, if you are outside, look for a shady area. If you are indoors, remove a layer of clothing or turn on the air conditioning. You may also want to lie down, or if that isn’t possible, stop doing any strenuous activities. That may help your body regulate temperature. Drink water or a sports drink to help rehydrate yourself. Sports drinks have electrolytes, which your body loses through excessive sweating. If you have become nauseated or vomit, seek help from a medical doctor right away. A heat stroke is considered a medical emergency. Call your local emergency services immediately if you suspect that you’re having a heat stroke. Your doctor may place you in

• Stay hydrated. Drink two to four cups of water every hour that you are doing activities outside in the heat or direct sun. Your body needs more water than usual when working in a hot environment because you’ll lose more fluids through sweating. • Avoid alcohol or caffeinated beverages if you are doing strenuous activities, especially in the heat. The caffeine increases your risk for dehydration. • On hotter days, try to do more activities inside in a temperaturecontrolled or air-conditioned environment. • Try to avoid doing activities outside during the hottest parts of the day and in direct sunlight. • Wear light-colored, loose, lightweight clothing when doing activities outside in the heat. A widebrimmed hat will keep sun from your face and help you stay cooler. • Take cooler baths or showers on a hot day to help cool you down. • Take frequent breaks when working or exercising in the heat. This includes activities like hiking or playing sports. • Never leave children, infants, adults, or pets in a closed, parked car. The temperature inside a closed car can become very hot, even if the temperature outside is mild. That can lead to heat-related illnesses.

Get Soft And Beautiful Hands Naturally!

Daily Regimen To Get Soft And Beautiful Hands Your hands do so much for you. Can’t you spend just ten minutes every day to care for them? You can actually follow some very simple steps to get soft and beautiful hands at home. In fact, there is no need for visiting the salon for getting a manicure done all the time. Then, why wait till your hands start showing signs of lack of attention? Start following your daily hand care regimen right from today. Here we tell you how: 1. Clean And Wash Hands Thoroughly Sounds quite easy, right? After all, we all tend to wash our hands many times a day. But here comes the importance of following the right method of cleaning and washing. Use a good handwash and be as thorough as possible. Make sure that the handwash you use multiple times throughout the day is a mild and gentle one. It is even better to find a hydrating formula infused with herbal ingredients so that it does not strip the natural moisture of your skin. Using too hot water can also dry out your skin. So, always use tepid water while washing your hands. 2. Try The One-Minute Magic Scrub Your hand has a lot of dead skin cells just like your face and they also need to be exfoliated regularly. For this, you can either use a good store-bought body scrub or simply make your own natural version at home. Take a tsp. of sugar crystals, half a tsp. of olive oil. and half a tsp. of lemon juice onto your palm, mix them well and smooth it out on both of your hands. Focus on the backsides of palms as well as the elbows. Rub in circular motions for a minute and wash the scrub off. Pat dry with a soft towel. In this mixture, sugar acts as the scrubbing agent, olive oil moisturizes the skin, and lemon juice lightens its tone. Thus, doing this at least twice a week can give you softer and lighter hands. 3. Moisturize With A Hand Cream Be it washing or scrubbing, follow it up with a generous dose of moisturization every day. A light yet super hydrating hand cream will give you the best results. However, do not use the cream when you still have your chores pending. Once you wrap up with all the work, apply the hand cream all over your hands and massage it into them nicely. Make sure that you rub the fingers and the cuticles as well and let the hands rest for half an hour. This will hydrate the skin by inducing enough moisture into it, thereby neutralizing the effects of hard work from your hands. Cortsey:Femina

What Causes a Gummy Smile and How Can a Gummy Smile Be Fixed?

Dr Vishal Sharma BSc, DDS, Cert. Ortho. FRCD(C), FCDS(BC)

A

gummy smile, technically referred to as excessive gingival display, is when a person smiles and shows too much of their gums above the top of the front teeth. It can be a source of insecurity for some people and make their smile less aesthetically appealing. As a Surrey orthodontist, I’ve had patients visit the office concerned about a gummy smile and under the impression that it can’t be fixed. Fortunately, as with most orthodontic and dental issues, there are solutions available. Treatment options will depend upon what the underlying cause of the gummy smile is. Yet, once we pinpoint a cause, we can start on the path of creating a smile you’re proud to show off. What is a Gummy Smile? What is actually considered an excessive gingival display varies and studies have shown that people differ in their aesthetic perception of gummy smiles. Yet, most will rate a smile as appealing in cases where less than 3mm of gum tissue is exposed. What this means in simpler terms is that a smile is often considered gummy and rated unattractive when approximately 1/8 of an inch of gum tissue or more is visible.

makes them appear shorter because excess gum tissue is covering the crown. Gummy Smile Correction Gummy smile treatment options depend on what’s causing it and how severe the problem is. If the upper jaw or teeth are only a little bit too long, sometimes braces or Invisalign alone or braces with temporary anchorage devices (TADS) can do the trick. When worn teeth are the culprits, orthodontic treatment followed by crowns can restore the appearance of the smile. If the cause is skeletal and moderate to severe, jaw surgery combined with orthodontic treatment may be the answer. This will create the most dramatic, stable results. If the upper lip is too short or is hyperactive, surgery can be performed to lengthen it and limit the retrac-

tion of the muscles when smiling. Lip repositioning procedures paired with orthodontic treatment have started to become a viable alternative to jaw surgery in certain instances. There are other less invasive treatments like Botox injections, which paralyze the muscles and prevent the lip from lifting too high when smiling. However, the results of Botox are only temporary. When a gummy smile is from large

gums, a periodontist can remove the extra tissue. For teeth that haven’t fully erupted, crown-lengthening surgery will remedy the problem. In this procedure, gum tissue, bone, or both, are removed to expose more of the tooth and allow the gums to retract back to a desirable position. If you’re interested in treatment for a gummy smile, you’ll first want to schedule a consultation with Aura Orthodontics. The key to success is receiving a diagnosis from a knowledgeable orthodontist like Dr. Sharma. From there, we can discuss how to address the issue. Whether it’s a matter of wearing braces or undergoing jaw surgery, we’ll work with you and any other specialists involved in your care for a comprehensive approach. Contact our Surrey or Abbotsford orthodontic clinics today and love your smile!

Gummy Smile Causes There are a number of conditions that can cause a gummy smile, however, they tend to boil down to a few main contributing factors: 1. The Jaw and Teeth: When the upper jaw is too long, it’s known as vertical maxillary excess and it can create a gummy smile. This is a skeletal issue. Worn teeth or teeth that are too long may also disrupt the ratio of gum to tooth. 2. Lips: The lips can play a role in excessive gingival display. When the top lip is too short it may fail to cover the gums and teeth properly or lip hypermobility can be a cause. This is when the upper lip is normal in length while a person’s face is at rest but is overly active and lifts up too high when they smile revealing excessive gum tissue. 3. The Gums: The problem can occur if gums are too long or enlarged (gingival hypertrophy). It could also manifest if the teeth don’t erupt fully which

Failure to capitalise on nature’s bounty

E

ndowed with picturesque landscapes, sterling beaches and nature’s generous gifts, the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago has sadly failed to realise its full potential as a tourism hub for India due to infrastructural inadequacies, lack of free enterprise and the fear psychosis of natural calamities. The group of 572 emerald islands in the Bay of Bengal, out of which only 36 are inhabited, is surely

waiting to be discovered. With its exotic looking beaches and pristine islands having equally exotic names, wonderful opportunities for adventure sports like snorkelling and sea-walking and a vast succulent array of seafood delicacies that come cheaper than the vegetables brought from the mainland, the Andamans can compare with many other dream tourist destinations across the globe. One can laze around the enticing

beaches at Havelock Islands, or Ross and Smith - the twin islands joined by a bewitching sandbar. Sea-bathing and sun-basking at the Corbyn’s Cove beach helps one to unwind and destress while the Hilltop Gallows on Viper Island and Port Blair’s Cellular Jail are sure to overwhelm the visitors with a sense of patriotism as the clock ticks back to the days of India’s freedom struggle. Before the infamous Cellular Jail came up in 1906, Viper Island was the jail house for convicts and freedom fighters of 1857, many of whom were sent to the gallows at the hilltop. The now-dilapidated red building stands testimony to the unbearable tortures and hardships inflicted by the British on the freedom fighters. But located in Zone V, the highest seismic zone, the islands are highly prone to quakes and frequent cyclones. The scars of the devastating 2004 Tsunami - which ravaged the economy and the population, with the unofficial death toll estimated at about 7,000 are still fresh. “Being prone to devastating cyclones, the people have developed a fear psychology. They opt for the safety of government jobs. We lack the free spirit of enterprise here. Industries are very small and the opportunities are therefore very limited,” said the union territory’s Lieutenant Governor, Lt. General (retd) A.K. Singh. According to official estimates, the flow of tourists doubled to nearly 300,000 in 2012 from 130,000 in 200809. Less than 10 percent were foreign visitors, officials said. The tourism department however feels that the growth rate of even domestic tourists should have been much higher, considering attractions like the Radha Nagar beach - chosen as Asia’s best in 2004. “The tourist inflow has been growing, but not at the desired rate. The growth can be far more if we can improve the infrastructure, including connectivity and hospitality. Higher flight rates act as a hindrance,” Andaman Tourism Department Director P. Viswakannan said. Other stakeholders squarely blamed the lack of infrastructure and civic maintenance, especially on the cleanliness front, the bane of Indian

tourist spots. “The region’s infrastructural deficiency makes it entirely dependent on the mainland. We have so few educational institutions that people here are not adequately qualified,” said Jesu Manick of the Strategic Urban Rural Advancement Backing Institute (SURABI), an NGO that imparts industrial and other training to people. Andaman Chamber of Commerce and Industry president G Bhasker pointed to other shortcomings. “We have so much potential in the fishing sector but we are not making much progress. Electronic communication is poor, there is lack of power, and transport facilities are inadequate. Once these problems are sorted out, there won’t be any dearth of enterprise,” said Bhasker. With its stress on eco-tourism and adventure tourism, the administration is involving self-help groups (SHGs) and ensuring increased private participation to better the infrastructure. The focus is on fisheries and tourism - the two sectors which form the backbone of the economy. Viswakannan said the administration was working on creating more projects under the public-private partnership model. “The administration has been working on developing the islands as a major tourism hub, but we also need increased private participation,” he added. Connectivity is another grey area. Despite its international tag, the Port Blair airport currently gets no overseas flights. Work is on to develop night landing facilities and is expected to be completed within six months. The administration hopes the airport will at least get a few stopovers of international flights. On the security front, a host of safety guidelines, including setting up SOS kiosks and an enforcement agency to ensure the safety of tourists, have been chalked out. The SOS kiosks will be set up at the jetties across the islands, while the enforcement agency comprising police and tourism department officials will ensure tour operators comply with the prescribed safety guidelines. How to Dress for a Business Meeting: Yes, Seriously

Ritika Tiwari Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist

W

hether you want to make a lasting impression or seal an important deal -- Identify the intention behind the meeting in order to dress sharply for it. Depending on the clients you are going to meet, it’s also essential to look for any guidelines that might be set for the meeting’s dress code. In case there aren’t any guidelines, its best to tread cautiously and use your best judgment to dress appropriately. To help you get dressed for your next big business meeting, we have put together some really helpful and simple tips: 1- When in doubt, go for business casuals Business casuals are a combination of classic office formals, and trendy modern prints and designs. For women, business casuals include well-fitted chinos, knee length pencil skirts, tailored shirts, and of course a dapper blazer that hugs your shoulders nicely. 2- Find the perfect blouse The perfect blouse for a business meeting is the one which flatters your upper body, but at the same time isn’t too revealing. A silk blouse or a close weave sweater would be the most apt for a business meeting. When you are buying a new blouse, go for rich hue patterns on silk or solid colours. 3- Make sure you aren’t exposing too much skin One of the biggest faux pas you can make while dressing for a business meeting is showing too much skin. You should avoid wearing sleeveless blouses and check the length of your skirt from all sides as well. Dressing inappropriately can be easily mistaken as a sign of unprofessionalism and incompetent-ness.

4- Match your trousers with your jacket While it’s safest to wear a twopiece suit to a meeting, if you have bought trousers separately, then make sure its colour compliments the colour of the jacket you are going to wear. Bright or printed jackets go well with dark

trouser. 5- Wear perfectly fitted clothes Whether you are wearing a formal suit or a complete business attire, it’s important to make sure that your clothes fit you perfectly. It can look rather inappropriate if your clothes are too tight on you. At the same time, lose clothes might make your colleagues think that you borrowed them from someone and didn’t want to put any effort into dressing for the meeting. When you are buying business attire, make sure it suits your body shape. A suit is a perfect fit for you only when the trousers end right before the shoe line and the shoulders sit square. 6- Pay attention to details Just wearing a fitted suit is not enough, you also need to pay attention to details to make sure you look sharp as ever. The clothes you will be wearing should be clean, fresh, and well ironed. When you are getting ready, make sure to check for any creases, lose buttons, or stains. At the same time, your nails shouldn’t be too long or have

any bright or funky nail paint. Instead go for lighter and nude shade nail polishes for a business meeting. 7- Your shoes can say a lot about you When it comes to shoes for a business meeting, comfort and confidence is everything. While a high heeled shoe may look a lot better, if it’s not so comfortable that you can easily wear it for a few hours, then it’s best to replace them with a pair of classic low-heeled shoes. It is also not necessary for your shoes to be black. Just make sure to go for a subtle colour that matches with the rest of your outfit. 8- Your business attire is incomplete without the right hairstyle All the effort you take to create the perfect look for your business meeting can quickly go down the drain if you don’t pay attention to your hairs. Women should make sure their hairs are brushed and not unruly. It’s best to tie the hair up in a loose ponytail or bun. With these simple dressing tips, you will be able to ace your business meetings successfully.
