odern lifestyle and increasing dependency on the use of frozen and fast foods, plus the use of preservatives to keep foods fresh may be adversely affecting the health of people. The busy schedules leave us very little free time to look after our health. Whole family works to make the ends meet and after a hard day’s work there is hardly any enthusiasm to cook fresh food at home. Even if we do, we rely on the freshness of foods available from our grocery stores that may be as a result of preservatives or genetic modification. This is probably why we are seeing more and more of us ending up in hospitals with some hard to cure diseases, resulting in financial difficulties. Statistics (from Heart and Stroke foundation Canada) show that heart failure in on the rise. 50,000 Canadians are diagnosed with heart failure each year and 600,000 are living with it. And according to Canadian Cancer Society statistics, nearly 1 in 2 Canadians is expected to get cancer. These are just 2 of many critical diseases that make us think about their impact on us and our loved ones when faced. Insurance industry amongst many different kinds of insurances, offers Critical illness insurance plans that can Sandeep Ahuja help people cope up with the hardships faced by people in such instances.

an insurance coverage would make it even harder to cope up with the expenses incurred. On the other hand, people having surplus sources of income feel that they have enough money to cover for their treatment during times of medical emergency. So, they don’t feel ‘the need’ to buy any insurance. But if they are insured, they would be able to leave their capital untouched for further growth instead of being drained away for medical treatment. Thus, by investing only a small fraction of your monthly income in critical insurance, you can save yourself during times of illness. As an independent insurance advisor working through Punjab Insurance Agency, I deal with different insurance companies offering plans for critical illness insurance. I can explain you in detail, various critical illness plan options and coverage that is suitable for your needs and resources. Critical Illness Insurance

Critical Illness Insurance is insurance protection that guarantees a payment of a tax-free lump sum benefit in case the insured suffers from a critical illness. This benefit may be used to pay for insured’s treatment, pay regular bills and help his/her loved ones who may have to take time off their work for looking after the insured.

Eligibility Criteria

4The insured must survive for 30 days after the diagnosis of critical illness. This period can increase up to a maximum of 180 days in certain cases. 4Critical illness should be diagnosed by your family physician. The insured own declaration does not constitute a valid claim. Based on physician’s certification/statement and supporting medical record, the insurance company pays a lump sum payment depending on the coverage purchased.

Positive features

4You can insure yourself for the benefit amount as per your own needs/priority/circumstance and are not bound to spend the benefit amount entirely on your medical treatment. 4In the event of a critical illness, if the illness is considered eligible for payment of benefits, you will receive full payment of the face value. 4You can add features, as a Rider to policy, like ‘Return of premium on Death’, ‘Return of Premium on Expiry of Policy’ etc. 4You are the beneficiary for the Critical insurance but, you can nominate a beneficiary. However, you must name a beneficiary for ‘Return of premium on death’ rider. EXAMPLE: A 35-year old non-smoker female purchases critical illness coverage of $100,000 Plan Term-75 with, refund of premium on death and refund after 15 years riders. Under the policy, she will pay a monthly premium of $136.80 totalling to $1641.60 annually. In the duration of policy, if she makes a claim for an eligible critical illness, she will receive a cheque of the full face amount of $100,000. Any time after 15 years, she can apply for a full refund of premium paid to date. If unfortunately, if she dies after (say) 6 years of purchase of policy for any reason, her family will receive a full refund of paid premium amount of $9849.60. Thus, in all situations, the insured/claimant has nothing to lose. It is a ‘forced investment’ for the benefit of the insured. While the insured is protected from unfavourable financial effects arising from the insured illnesses, it is also a saving for future that can be used as he/she wish. Due to lack of knowledge about its advantages, many people don’t buy critical illness insurance. People avoid it for different reasons. Those on low income feel consider it as an additional burden on their pocket. But, they fail to realize that, at the time of critical need, the absence of

Being surrounded by people who are creative to the core, Raja is pushed to be ultra-creative. Being cool, calm composed and collective, he has the knack of convincing the promoters of Albums to his school of thought. When I asked Raja as he shoot on a video, he has to make a choice; to this he quipped, “I look at the rhythm of the song, and then I replicate an abstraction, which make my videos closer to what the writer, singer and musician usually meant in the beginning. I have a lot of freedom in my area of skill and am very creative when it comes to my videos. Though, I do not believe in fast editing or to shoot from crazy angles but never forget my commitment to the shot.” When opportunity meets consistent preparation then success happens. of Christmas Day Celebration!

Many of the traditions of Christmas that exist today were born centuries ago before the birth of Christ. The modern day traditions of exchanging gifts, bonfires, carnivals, songs of carollers which echo in the cities, huge feasts and many more have all originated from the time of the Mesopotamians. Most of these traditions began when the Mesopotamians started the New Year celebration. Some of the modern day customs and traditions of Christmas day celebration are:

Saint Nicholas a saint of 4th century was a bishop and favourite of children who used to distribute gifts. 6th December his day of feast day started being observed as children’s holiday and was called Saint Nikolaas in Holland. Since the English were not able to pronounce this name they started calling him Santa Claus and started celebrating it on Christmas. In Germany Santa Claus was called Kriss kringle and started celebrating the day on 25th December commemorating the birth of Jesus.

Christmas Tree Trees have ben worshipped in many ancient cultures and quite

often trees were brought at homes and decorated anticipating a good crop growth in the upcoming year. The Christmas tree of modern times was born in around 8th century while the German tribes was being converted by St. Boniface. The oak tree was worshipped by the tribe and St. Boniface cut a massive tree. I n its place a fir tree grew and since then Christians s t a r t e d decorating the evergreen tree to celebrate Christmas. Mistletoe It is thought that mistletoe fell direct from heaven on earth and it grew in the form of a tree. It made people believe that it is the representation of union of earth and heaven. Mistletoe thus signifies reconciliation of God and the mankind. The mention of a kiss under mistletoe represents reception of God’s gift from heaven. Santa Claus

Holly Holly, having sharp edges worn by Jesus Christ at his crucifixion, is one of the most significant symbols of Christmas day celebration. It is symbolises crown of thorns and the red berries symbolises blood.

household from evil spirits. Candy Canes

It is believed that the Candy Canes were developed to represent Jesus. The “J” shape represented Jesus. The white colour there is the symbol of purity and the red stripes are the representation for blood. Christmas Cards

Yule Log The Chaldeans mean infant when they say “Yule”. The Germanic tribes celebrated Yule day or child’s day. The tradition of Yule log started in Italy and France sometimes 1200 years back. People used to cut huge massive log and place them in the hearth. And later the log thus cut is speckled with oil, salt and wine. It was believed that saying prayer with these logs would protect the

The tradition of wishing Christmas by sending cards to each other began in Victorian England. Printers of London Goodall and Sons started to produce Christmas cards in bulk. A card wishing “Merry Christmas” was first fabricated in 1862. They later on designed various cards having various designs like snowmen, mangers, holly and robins. ourtesy: christmas-day.org

For the Women in Your Life

Christmas is here, the time of festivities and celebrations. This is also the time for exchanging gifts with people close to you, your loved ones. Gifting, can be as simple or as intricate a task you make it out to be. The importance though lies in making the gift appear thoughtful and creative.

I

t is a process that also depends on our relationship with the receiver. And it requires a special effort, especially so if the gift is meant for the women in our life. Because, it is the women that give meaning to our lives. Though at times we make the mistake of buying a generalist gift to save time and energy. Such gifts are never valued as much as they should be by the person for whom they are meant. A quick and easy solution is meant to fall short of expectations. And especially so with women, as women are known to have more intelligence when it comes to judging both the emotional value and the commercial value of a gift. Choosing a gift more in tune with the individuality of the receiver always works in the favor of the giver. Here are some Christmas Day gift ideas that might help you in doing the same. 4Clothes – Women love clothes. It makes them feel good about themselves. However, it is very easy to go wrong while buying clothes for women. To avoid making any mistakes, do keep in mind details like personal style, the size and body shape of the person.

www.SAENTERTAINMENT.CA

4Accessories – Accessories are things that complement a dress or a person’s way of carrying themselves. There is a wide range of accessories which can be considered a gifting idea. From watches to handbags to scarves to eye wear, all of them can be a great gifting idea. 4Jewelry – There are mainly three criteria that influence our choices in jewelry. The first one is the budget which influences the price range of the jewelry being bought. The second one which is also relative to your relationship with the person and your budget is the type of metal of which the jewelry is made. Therefore, the jewelry could be made of precious metals like Silver, Gold, Diamond or Platinum. Or, one could go in for artificial or semi precious to precious stone jewelry. The third criteria is the intricacy and detailing in the designing of jewelry. 4Cosmetics – These include gifting ideas like perfumes, fragrances, lip colors, quick makeup products, nail colors and so on. While buying cosmetics, be prepared with the knowledge of what suits whom. And the personal choice and taste of the person for whom the gift is being purchased.

/saentertainmentnewsmagazine

@ansalmedia

Therefore, one should also be particular of things like colors and skin shades while buying cosmetics as gifts. 4Techno Gadgets, Travel or Sports Gear – Such gifts find favor with women who are fond of sports, travel, or, those women who love being in tune with the latest in technology. One could then go in for mobile handsets, laptops, digicams and travel or sports gear. 4Flowers – Flowers are the perfect gift, be it any occasion, and more so since they work best when it comes to expressing feelings and emotions. But, one should be careful in using them as an easy or a generalist gifting idea. It also helps when flowers are a thoughtful add on to a gift. One should be creative with flowers as a gift and thus avoid the impression of having oversimplified the gifting decision. 4Holidays – Plan the perfect winter getaway for the women who give your life meaning and make it special. Make this festive season memorable for them with a day’s excursion to the spa or an exclusive evening at a club. A longer well planned annual holiday or a couple of days’ getaway is also a great idea as it will serve two

purposes at one go. Pamper your loved ones and yourself and carry forward memories for a lifetime with this gifting idea. While selecting a gifting idea, or deciding on that perfect gift, remember that a gift can do more than making the day or occasion special for someone. A gift can go as far as building stronger relationships, keep this in mind and you will never go wrong while selecting that perfect gift for the people who matter to you.

The Colors of Christmas SPOTLIGHT

There are several colors which are traditionally associated with Christmas. This site uses Red, Green and Gold. But why do we have them and what do the colors represent?

M

ost the colors and their meanings come from the western/northern European traditions and customs, when Christmas is in the middle of winter and it’s dark and cold. Green

branches into their houses during the mid winter festivals. In many parts of Europe during the middle ages, Paradise plays were performed, often on Christmas Eve. They told Bible stories to people who couldn’t read. The ‘Paradise Tree’ in the garden of eden in the play was normally a pine tree with red apples tied to it. Now the most common use of green at Christmas are Christmas Trees. Red As mentioned above, an early use of red at Christmas were the apples on the paradise tree. They represented the fall of Adam in the plays. Red is also the color of Holly berries, which is said to represent the blood of Jesus when he died on the cross. Red is also the color of Bishops robes. These would have been worn by St. Nicholas and then also became Santa’s uniform!

Evergreen plants, like Holly, Ivy and Mistletoe have been used for thousands of years to decorate and brighten up buildings during the long dark winter. They also reminded people that spring would come and that winter wouldn’t last forever! The Romans would exchange evergreen branches during January as a sign of good luck. The ancient Egyptians used to bring palm

Gold Gold is the color of the Sun and light - both very important in the dark winter. And both red and gold are the colors of fire that you need to keep you warm. Gold was also one of the presents brought to the baby Jesus by one of the wise men and traditionally it’s the color used to show the star that the wise men followed. Silver is sometimes used instead of (or with) gold. But gold is a ‘warmer’ color.

White White is often associated with purity and peace in western cultures. The snow of winter is also very white! White paper wafers were also sometimes used to decorate paradise trees. The wafers represented the bread eaten during Christian Communion or Mass, when Christians remember that Jesus died for them. White is used by most churches as the color of Christmas, when the altar is covered with a white cloth (in the Russian Orthodox Church Gold is used for Christmas). Blue The color blue is often associated with Mary, the mother of Jesus. In medieval times blue dye and paint was more expensive than gold! So it would only be worn by Royal families and very rich people. Mary was often painted wearing blue to show she was very important. Blue can also represent the color of the sky and heaven. During Advent, purple and sometimes blue is used in most churches for the color of the altar cloth (in the Russian Orthodox Church red is used for advent)

From ‘Miss Campus Princess’ to ‘Miss World’: Manushi Chillar’s ascent within a year It has been a title bagging year for a doctor-in-the-making. Manushi Chillar, the Miss World 2017, has been bagging beauty titles in the past one year even while pursuing her course in medicine in an all-girls medical college in Haryana’s Sonepat district.

T

he 21-year-old beauty was crowed Miss World 2017 at a glittering ceremony in the seaside resort city of Sanya in China last month. Manushi, whose family belongs to Haryana and lives in New Delhi, is pursuing her MBBS degree from the Bhagat Phool Singh Government Medical College for Women in Khanpur Kalan village in Sonepat. A gifted poet, painter and Kuchipudi dancer, Masushi wants to be a cardiac surgeon and has been associated in a project for menstrual hygiene among women. In less than one year, she won the ‘Miss Campus Princess’ title in the medical college in December last year. She went on to pick the ‘Miss Haryana’ title in April this year followed by the coveted Femina Miss India title in June this year. “She had promised us that she will take a shot at winning the Miss World title. She has achieved that and we are all proud of her,” Anjali and Muskan, her co-inmates in the medical college hostel, said. There were joyous celebrations at the home of her parental uncle, Dr Dinesh Chillar, a government doctor in Haryana, and Dr Usha Chillar, an associate professor in Dermatology in Manushi’s medical college. The family members and friends danced and distributed sweets the night after news of Manushi winning the Miss World title broke. There were reports of celebrations in Bamdoli village near Bahadurgarh town in Haryana’s Jhattar district, around 55 km from Delhi, as residents burst crackers on her achievement. “She has brought laurels to our village, state and country. We are all proud of her,” Bamdoli resident Karan Singh said. There were celebrations among students and faculty of the medical college when news came about Manushi winning the Miss World title. After winning the Miss India title, Manushi took a break from her medical studies for one year to pursue her love for beauty pageants. After fulfilling her commitments to the present titles that she is holding, Manushi plans to get back to her studies and complete her MBBS degree. Born in Rohtak town, around 70 km from New Delhi, on May 14, 1997, Manushi studied in St. Thomas School in New Delhi. Good in her studies, she scored 96 percent marks in her Class 12 exams. Her parents, Dr Mitrabasu Chillar and Dr Neelam Chillar, who were with her in Sanya when she was crowned Miss World, are both doctors working in health institutes

in New Delhi. “I will try to win the Miss World 2017 crown for the country and my state,” Manushi had told the media in July this year when she came to meet Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar after winning the Miss India title. Manushi has been associated with ‘Project Shakti’ campaign, initiated by her to make women and girls more aware about menstural hygiene, even before she ventured into the beauty pageants scene. Haryana, infamous for the worst sex ratio among states in the country, has seen young women from sports to science to beauty fields making it big at the international level in recent years. How to control

Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM (A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp.)

Cont. from Last Issue Mindfulness is, when a person learns to be aware of what he or she is feeling physically and mentally from moment to moment. But in addition to mindfulness, keeping a journal of what you eat is another approach that may help you monitor the way food intake relates to changes in emotions.

“Hunger blocking” supplements:

There are plethora of “appetite suppressing supplements” available on shelves of stores but the million dollar question is; are any of these pills worth purchasing? The answer, in short, is no- as per experts and real end users. Many of the over-the-counter appetite suppressants, which aim to blunt appetite-stimulating hormones, are really just stimulants. Researchers have found that these supplements can suppress appetite a bit, and are dangerous because they’re not regulated and affect metabolism in the long run. Ultimately, although some products show modest effects, many supplements have had either no or limited randomized, controlled trials to examine their effectiveness, Unfortunately, Currently, there is no strong body of research evidence indicating that one specific supplement will produce significant weight loss, especially in the long term.

Let us examine thereasons for excessive hunger ut-infra:

Eating Too Many Refined Carbs:

Refined carbs have been heavily processed and stripped of their fibre, vitamins and minerals. One of the most consumed sources of refined carbs is white flour, which is found in many grain-based foods like bread and pasta. Other foods such as soda, candy and baked goods, which are made with highly processed sugars, are also considered to be refined carbs. Since refined carbs lack fulfilling fibre, your body digests them very quickly. This is a major reason why you may be hungry frequently, if you eat a lot of refined carbs, as they do not promote significant feelings of fullness. Furthermore, eating refined carbs may lead to rapid spikes in your blood sugar. This leads to increased levels of insulin in the blood, a hormone responsible for transporting sugar into your cells. When a lot of insulin is released at once in response to high blood sugar, it works by quickly removing sugar from your blood, which may lead to a sudden drop in blood sugar levels.

your hydration needs.Vegetables that contain 92 percent water include cauliflower, eggplant, red cabbage, peppers and spinach. Broccoli is 90 percent water by weight. Additional healthy hydrating foods include carrots with 88 percent water and green peas and white potatoes with 80 percent water.

If Diet Lacks Fibre Low blood sugar levels signal your body that it needs more food, which is another reason why you may feel hungry often if refined carbs are a regular part of your diet. To reduce your refined carb intake, simply replace them with healthier, whole foods like vegetables, fruit, legumes and whole grains. These foods are still high in carbs, but they are rich in fibre, which is helpful for keeping hunger under control (12). Summary: Refined carbs lack fibre and cause blood sugar fluctuations, which are the primary reasons why eating too many of them may leave you feeling hungry. You’re Not Eating Enough Protein: Consuming enough lean protein is important for appetite control. Protein plays an important role in appetite control by regulating your hunger hormones. Due to this reason, you may feel hungry frequently if you don’t eat enough lean Protein. Fortunately, many foods are high in protein, so it is not difficult to get enough of it through your diet. Animal products, such as meat, poultry, fish and eggs, contain high amounts of protein. For vegans, it is also found in some dairy products, including milk, cheese and yogurt, as well as a few plant-based foods like legumes, nuts, seeds and whole grains to quote a few.

Not Sleeping Enough

Recent research has shown that not getting enough sleep increases hunger. For example, sleep restriction may lead to increase in ghrelin [hunger inducing hormone] and decrease in leptin [hunger fulfillment signalling] hormone. Seven to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep each night is required for the proper functioning of your brain and immune system, and it is associated with a lower risk of several chronic illnesses, including heart disease, obesity and cancer.

fat may lead to the release of various fullness-promoting hormones. Accordingly, for these reasons, you may feel frequent hunger if your diet is low in fat. There are many healthy, high-fat foods that you can include in your diet to increase your fat intake. Certain types of fats, such as medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) and omega-3 fatty acids, have been studied the most for their impact on reducing appetite. The richest food source of MCT is coconut oil, while omega-3 fatty acids are found in fatty fish like salmon, tuna and mackerel. You can also get omega3s from plant-based foods, such as walnuts and flaxseeds. Some other sources of healthy, high-fat foods include avocados, olive oil, eggs and full-fat yogurt.

Not Drinking Enough Water:

You may always be hungry if you’re not drinking enough water. That’s because it has appetite-reducing properties. Additionally, it is possible that you are mistaking feelings of thirst for feelings of hunger. To ensure you’re properly hydrated, simply drink water when you feel thirsty. Eating lots of water-rich foods, including fruits and vegetables, will also contribute to

If your diet lacks fibre, you may feel hungry frequently.Consuming lots of high-fibre foods is beneficial for keeping hunger under control. High-fibre foods slow your stomach’s emptying rate and indeedtake longer to digest than low-fibrefoods. Moreover, a high fibre intake influences the release of appetitereducing hormones and the production of short-chain fatty acids, which have been shown to have fullnesspromoting effects. Several studies have found soluble fibre, or fibre that dissolves in water, to be more filling than insoluble fibre. Many different foods, such as oatmeal, flaxseeds, sweet potatoes, oranges and Brussels sprouts, are excellent sources of soluble fibre. High-fibre diet helpful for reducing hunger, it is also associated with several other health benefits, such as a reduced risk of heart disease, diabetes and obesity. To ensure you’re getting enough fibre, opt for a diet that is rich in whole, plant-based foods, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes and whole grains. Contd. in next edition

When Diet Is Low in Unsaturated Fat

Fat plays a key role in keeping you full.Thereby meaning that it takes longer for you to digest fat and it remains in your stomach for a long period of time. Additionally, eating

TEENAGE RELATIONSHIPSBetter Experience Mixed Taste

If parents keep the lines of communication open and let the child know that they are there to listen, the child will be more likely to come to them with questions and concerns.

Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM (A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp.)

Early teenage (13-15 years)relationships often involve exploring physical intimacy and sexual feelings. Parents may not feel ready for this, in succession, but they have an important role in guiding and supporting their child through this important developmental stage. Teenage relationships- a major development: These relationships come with all the other changes going on during adolescence i.e. physical, social and emotional. And they’re linked to your child’s growing interest in body image and a burgeoning desire to look at best, enjoy independence and privacy in particular. Relationships bring lots of emotional ups and downs for children. And parents are also affected being a part of nuclear or blended family. Normally, the child experience feelings of infatuation which can besome times a bit confronting for parents. But these feelings are leading your child to developa deeper capacity to mature and learn by developing intimate relationships. As the child passes through the corridor of uncertainty, it may give parentsa fair cause of concern. Keeping in view the use, abuse or misuse of relationships here, there and everywhere parents are always worried and want to intervene, though in many cases they feel hapless, hopeless and helpless. When teenage relationships normally start There is no right age to define such relationships in the light of the fact that every child is different, and every family do feel differently about this issue. And as such culture, creed, custom, ethnicity and race also play a decisive role. As per considered view of experts following are some of the behavior pattern of teenagers: 9-11 years old child start exhibiting signs of more independence from the family and now more interested in his/her friends. 10-14 years, child might want to spend more time in mixed gender groups, which might eventually end up in a romantic relationship. 15-19 years, romantic relationships can become central to social life. Friendships might become

28

DECEMBER 2017

Parents’ experience- laden - guidance can help their teen child to separate the chaff from the wheat; and take life affecting decisions in time and in a correct manner. The only stipulation is the child should believe in them. deeper, more stable or a break up may happen. Generally speaking, teenage relationships might last only a few weeks or months. The prime reason is the infatuation for the person and nothing else.Though some choose to focus on schoolwork, sport or other interests yet a romantic relationship can occur in the late teens. First crush, an identity crush: Before a child starts having relationships, he might have one or more crushes. An identity crush is when your child finds someone he/ she admires and wants to be like. A romantic crush: It is the beginning of romantic feelings towards person of other gender. It’s about a child imagining another likable person as suitable. These crushes normally do not last very long because ideas of perfection often break down when your child gets to know the other person in a closer manner. Early teenage relationships Younger teenagers usually hang out together in groups. They might meet up with someone special among friends, and then gradually starts pending more time with that person alone. The most influential role models for teenagers are the grown-ups in their lives. You can be a positive role model for respectful relationships and friendships by treating your partner, friends and family with care and respect. Just talking about both men and women respectfully lets your child know you think everyone is equal and valuable. Talking about teenage relationships

with your child Family outlook plays a big part in the way a child thinks about teenage relationships. If a family encourage conversations about feelings, friendships and family relationships, it can help teenager feel confident to talk about teenage relationships in general. If your child knows what respectful relationships look like in general, he/she can relate this directly to romantic relationships. Depending on your values and family rules, you and your child might need to discuss behavior and ground rules, plus consequences for breaking the rules. For example, you might talk about the amount of time your child spends with his girlfriend versus the amount of time he spends studying. You might also want to agree on some strategies for what your child should do if he feels unsafe or threatened.Young people might also talk to their friends, which is healthy and normal. They still need your back-up, though, so keeping the lines of communication open is very important. Sexuality in teenage relationships If your child is in a relationship, it can bring up questions about sex and intimacy. Though not all teenage relationships include sex, but most teenagers will experiment with sexual behavior at some later stage. This is why every school gives clear information on contraception, safe sex and sexually transmitted diseases (STD). Peer Pressure Peer pressure can play a reasonable role. A child may feel compelled to have a boyfriend or girlfriend because other fellow students re into it. If a child is encouraged to have comfortable, open discussions about friends and relationships with parents then the child can actually get more mature to decide the right or wrong. Same-sex attraction For some young people, sexual development during adolescence will include same-sex attraction and experiences. Under 10% of young teens start

realizing they have same-sex attraction. A larger number of such young people might develop bisexual attraction. If a child feels confused about his feelings or attraction to someone else, parents need to respondpositively A big part of this is being clear about your own feelings about same-sex attraction. Sexuality develops and often changes over time. Teenage relationships and break-ups Break-ups and broken hearts are part of teenage relationships; also, the sad part is when some are made public in their social circles i.e.at school, or online on social networking websites. A teenager might be sad and emotional if his relationship ends. Needless to add that this is part of learning as how to cope with difficult decisions and dissipated disappointments. Now a child might need some time and space, a parental shoulder to cry on, and a willing ear to listen with empathy. He might also need some distraction. Active listening by parents can help pick up on your child’s needs. But if your child seems sad or even depressed for more than a few weeks after a break-up, it might be worth getting some counselling from a health professional, such as your Family Physician. Many people and services can help on this score. Apart from parents your family doctor, the school counsellor, your local community health center or a call on 811 can help. As parents, we need to make sure our child has developmentally appropriate sex education at home and at school. Parents must not forget that now the world is a country and every country is a global village and electronic media is playing a huge role to provide tools and platforms for our dear teenage children to engage, disengage and again engage.

If the person your child is interested in, is older or younger, it could be worth mentioning that people of different ages might want different things from relationshipsenmasse.

A Girl in a Whirl Contd. from previous issue (Part 17) “Sometimes a person gets so frustrated that he or she gets terribly depressed. But he or she can make his presence felt in the society when he realizes his obligations and gets up to face the reality practically. Life is replete with terrible sorrows and overcoming those obstacles in one’s own ways is the success of life.”, dad explained plainly. We were listening to dad very seriously. Zindgi ka safar, hai yeh kaisa safar. Koi samjha nahi, koi jana nahi (Life’s journey is so strange, nobody could understand it). Meenu sang Kishore Kumar’s song in a typical style of Rajesh Khanna that we couldn’t help laughing. Despite being serious, dad couldn’t help too. “Everything shouldn’t be taken lightly. Many things need to be taken seriously.”, Mom said controlling her guffaw of laughter. “I’m a lucky father

who has so nice and jolly children like you guys. Our blessings are that you always remain happy. But, we cannot be everywhere with you. Everybody has to face his life’s main problems by himself. That’s why you have to be well prepared and strong enough to live your life. Don’t be scared of problems; rather find out their solutions with the help of your wellwishers, if you cannot do so alone. Never consider yourself alone. Share your heart with true friends frankly before taking any big decision in a difficult situation. Do think about the future of your dear siblings, parents and children who pin big hopes on you. When we start living for others keeping our personal interests aside, we start cherishing our life way more. When we see our children playing and smiling at home, we forget our all worries. This is the greatest blessing and success of our life. Wise people say Never ever think ill of yourself. There are already many to do so.”, dad paused for a while. “One thing more; your grandpa used to ask me to read gurbani every day, but never could I do so. Only I chant ‘Waheguru, Waheguru…’ during my morning shower or just before going to bed. I never get time from business and domestic affairs. Your grandpa told me that he had several hard times in his life. He read ‘Sukhmani Sahib’ once a day for forty days without a miss for his big problems, and all his problems were finally solved somehow.”, dad concluded

his talk with this story. I could clearly see that dad was trying to make me understand what I needed to do. A father probably cannot talk to his daughter very frankly in our society, but I could see clearly the hidden fatherly love in my dad’s advice. I was beginning to realize that I must take my decisions not selfishly, rather keeping my siblings and parents in my mind. “Zindgi, har kadam ik naee jang hai. Jeet jaaenge hum, tu agar sang hai (Life is a struggle at every step. I will win if you are with me)”, Meenu sang this song hugging me in a movie style. Nobody laughed this time; only smiled. I embraced Sunny and Meenu together. Mom was smiling to see us. Dad was looking at us with a bit worried expressions. After some general gossips, we went to our rooms to sleep. What did my dad want me to do? I was trying to comprehend. Preparing myself psychologically to face my next situations, I fell asleep in about an hour. I got my air ticket in a week. All preparations were done for my going to Canada. Mom took me to the pandit before my leaving for Canada. “I had told you that there was some problem in your going abroad. But we did the treatment in time. The bad time isn’t over yet. More treatment is yet required to be safe.”, the pandit said. Contd. in next issue

and often look like blisters and open scabs. 4To avoid re-infection, use cotton swabs to apply lipstick while sore is visible. 4Also make sure that you do not apply a lipstick or a lip gloss if you have blister on your lips. This can cause further infection and also make your lips drier.

he skin on your lips is much thinner than the skin on the other parts of the body. This makes it easier for it to crack and chap and makes it much more important for you to take extra care of it. Chapping This can occur almost in any season. 4To prevent and treat, apply a good lip balm daily. 4 Do it in such a way that it slightly overlaps the edges of the lips. 4Look for a balm which provides sun protection and has elements like Vitamins A, C or E and AHAs. Splitting Cracks often occur after sleeping in dry air. 4To prevent this, be sure to apply a good lip balm or a thick moisturiser before going to bed. 4Also try to keep your lips as dry

Lipstick bleeding This begins as the skin around the mouth loses collagen and elastic tissue with age. 4Use a waxy lip liner to outline your lips. This will contain the lipstick within the line. 4You can also ensure that your lipstick does not bleed by keeping a thin layer of cotton around your lips to prevent this faux pas to happen. as possible, as bacteria in the air can cause them to crack.

ctress Tamannaah Bhatia, who is essaying Kangana Ranaut’s role in the Telugu remake of “Queen”, is working out harder for her look in the film. The remake titled “Queen Once Again” is being helmed by National Award-winning director Neelakanta. Tamannaah has decided to give the traditional gym routine amiss and train on the beach instead. “It’s a non-polluted environment and I feel it’s doing wonders to my overall well-being. Instead of three times a week which I generally practice in India, I’m doing six times a week in France,” the actress said in a statement. “My trainer felt I needed to shed a few more kilos so I’m waking up real early everyday to ensure I can give in those two dedicated hours. In fact, I have started skipping, something I have never done before and ‘Queen Once Again’ is making me do thing I have never attempted before,” she added. A leading daily reported that Varun Dhawan has been roped in for Remo D’Souza’s next. The film is apparently about a single father who learns to dance for his nine-yearold daughter so that they can compete in a dance competition. Remo D’Souza had written the role keeping Salman Khan in mind, however, Salman was reportedly sceptical about being a part of a dance film from the start. Salman Khan thought that Varun Dhawan would be the right choice and therefore even told Remo about it. Salman opted out of the movie just a few months back and now it has been reported that Varun will be seen playing the role that Salman was first offered. The film has been tentatively titled Dancing Dad. Varun who recently wrapped up the Delhi schedule of Shoojit Sircar’s October seems to be all set to start working on a dance film with Remo D’Souza soon after. Courtesy: FILMFARE

T

hose in a relationship always look for the right spark and those who are willing to be in a relationship, look for the right goal. such things you can do to make your bond stronger. 1.Put mobiles away when you are together: Now day’s social networking happens mostly through mobile phones. Keep your mobiles and social networking tools like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp etc aside when you two are lazing around

2. Spend less time in front of the television: It is good for couples to watch TV together, but spending too much time in front of the idiot box can shift your mind from other important things or the person next to you. When both of you are together at home, try to spend time together by sitting over a cup of tea/coffee, listening to music, engaging in romantic acts like cuddling and caressing each other, and making vacation plans. 3. Explore your culinary skills together: Love can happen in kitchen! Try to cook a dish together as it will keep both of you engaged in the same act and in the same place for a long time. In the middle of cooking, share a warm hug and a gentle kiss to make the environment more romantic and not boring. Know each other’s food

choices before heading for a cooking and dining date. 4. Sit together over tea in the morning: Sipping morning tea/ coffee together can do wonders to a relationship. Before you head for a busy day and hectic work schedule, spend some time together in the morning and keep yourself engaged in small talks. If time permits, have breakfast together and proceed for work like usual. Keep stress and worries away, and start your day on a good and romantic note. 5. Go for a vacation: Take short vacations to bring spark to your relation. Every time you may not get a long leave from work, so head for weekend getaways or short trips. Being together on a holiday away from daily chores rejuvenates you and takes togetherness a step higher. Enjoy adventure activates, plan romantic dinners, explore local life and have a pleasant vacation together. ourtesy: Mid Day

Tips to choose the right accessories to make an impression

O

ne can wear a nice dress, but the look can be incomplete without the right accessories. Accessories can turn an outfit from drab to fab. To look your best, put in extra effort into selecting your fashion accessories as you do the main components of your ensemble. Some of the classic trends that are doing rounds this season are candy-coloured jewellery and choker-shaped pieces, say experts. Sanchit Jain and Mohit Malhotra from Kohar Jewels as well as Ageerika Hari from Vaitaanika present a list of accessories that are trending nowadays: 4Chunky jewellery, is meant to make a bold impact as it adds a pop of colour, texture and shine to your look. Statement earrings goes very well with a dress with high neckline. One can also wear chunky earrings if the dress has embroidery or any interesting pattern. 4Classic collections include pearl or diamond jewellery. These accessories go well with understated dresses and tops, black and leather accessories. 4Candy-coloured jewellery pieces like resin bracelets or colourful watches go well with plain tops and dresses. They add a pop of colour and playfulness to the outfit. 4Delicate jewellery provides a subtle shine to any outfit.

www.SAENTERTAINMENT.CA

Delicate rings, necklaces and earrings can make you look pristine. Any plain outfit will enhance the delicateness of your jewellery and emphasise on design. 4Wear either gold or silver jewellery but never both. Hair accessories trump the look as these are the accessories that people notice first. Always add a piece of jewellery one cant go wrong with a bit of extra shine. 4To make your look pop, layer several pieces together. 4Bright coloured earrings, stacked bracelets of different materials, and vintage jewellery are all great statement accessories. A sleep pendant necklace can make as much of a statement as a bejewelled chocker. Enamel pins are also a form of jewellery, and are incredibly popular right now. 4For a glamorous look, one can opt for chandelier earrings, statement necklaces, cocktail rings , and stone encrusted accessories 4Bold and unique accessories or jewellery should be worn with understated clothing, and only one piece per outfit. The key rule that less is more is true. Balance the size of your accessory pieces. 4If you are wearing a statement necklace, skip wearing earrings or keep it simple. ourtesy: DAILYPOST

OUR INNER CLOCK (BIOLOGICAL CLOCK)

MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC

W

e are visually used to seeing the clock several times a day for our daily chores. We also adjust it is Spring going an hour Ahead & Last Month to set it an hour Behind, This is for Day time Light Saving Efforts. You will be Surprised to Know that there is an Inner Clock which Runs in Each & Every Cell of our body, for that matter in all Animals, Birds, Trees, Aquatics and each and every living thing. This is our Biological Clock which is dependent on Light & Dark the Circadian Rhythm. In most living things, internally synchronized circadian clocks make it possible for the organism to anticipate daily environmental changes corresponding with the day–night cycle and adjust its biology and behaviour accordingly. The term circadian derives from the Latin circa (about) diem (a day), since when taken away from external cues (such as environmental light), they do not run to exactly 24 hours. Clocks in humans in a lab in constant low light, for example, will average about 24.2 hours per day, rather than 24 hours exactly. The normal body clock oscillates with an endogenous period of exactly 24 hours, it entrains when it receives sufficient daily corrective signals from the environment, primarily daylight and darkness. Circadian clocks are the central mechanisms that drive this Rhythm. They consist of three major components: •A central biochemical oscillator with a period of about 24 hours that keeps time. •A series of input pathways to this central oscillator to allow entrainment of the clock. •A series of output pathways tied to distinct phases of the oscillator that regulate overt rhythms in biochemistry, physiology, and behavior throughout an organism. The clock is reset as an organism senses environmental time cues of which the primary one is light. Circadian oscillators are ubiquitous in tissues of the body where they are synchronized by both endogenous and external signals to regulate transcriptional activity throughout the day in a tissue-specific manner .The circadian clock is intertwined with most cellular metabolic processes and it is affected by organism aging. The basic molecu-

54

lar mechanisms of the biological clock have been defined in Almost All Vertebrates. In vertebrates, the master circadian clock is contained within the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN), a bilateral nerve cluster of about 20,000 neurons. The SCN itself is located in the hypothalamus , which is a small region of the brain situated directly above the Optic Chiasm , where it receives input from specialized Photosensitive Cells in the retina. The SCN maintains control across the body by synchronizing “slave oscillators”, which exhibit their own near24-hour rhythms and control circadian phenomena in local tissue.Through intercellular signalling Mechanism the SCN signals other hypothalamic nuclei and the Pineal Gland to modulate Our Body Temperature and production of hormones such as Cortisol and Melatonin , these hormones enter the Circulation and induce clock-driven effects throughout the organism. The Noble Committee Awarded 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to three American biologists for their research on the control of circadian rhythms Jeffrey C Hall. at the University of Maine, Michael Rosbash at Brandeis University and Michael W Young at the Rockefeller University share the prize for their discoveries of the genetic and biomolecular mechanisms that help the cells of plants and animals (including humans) mark the 24-hour cycle of day and night. That research became a cornerstone of the science of chronobiology, the study of how organisms track time and adapt to its cycles. Almost every aspect of physiology and metabolism will be controlled by the circadian clock.” For example, in the case of mammals, he said, 20–30 percent of the genes in any given tissue may be under the control of an internal clock. “But if you take all the

tissues of the body, the vast majority of genes are under clock control in one tissue or another.” New research shows that heart operations performed in the afternoon produced better outcomes than those done in the morning. Because afternoon heart surgery syncs with the body’s circadian clock (the internal body clock that controls when people sleep, eat and wake up), it reduces the risk of heart damage, the French researchers said. “Currently, there are few other surgical options to reduce the risk of postsurgery heart damage, meaning new techniques to protect patients are needed,” said study author Dr. David Montaigne, a professor at the University of Lille. Timing of injury Wounds, such as burns and cuts, heal nearly 60% faster when the injury occurs during the day rather than at night, Scientists from the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England, analyzed the records of 118 burn injury patients who had been cared for in England and Wales. They found burns that happened at night (between 8pm and 8am) took longer to heal than burns that occurred during the day (between 8am and 8pm), the researchers found -- an average of 28 days compared to only 17 days. One reason for this faster daytime healing was that skin cells moved much more quickly to repair the wound site when the body clock was set for daylight, the team said. Within individual cells, this speed was driven by increased activity of proteins that are involved in cell movement and repair. Mouse experiments, where the researchers made incisions to the skin, also showed wound healing to be sig-

nificantly greater when wounds were inflicted during the animal’s active phase compared with the rest phase. Further examining this process in the lab, the researchers “found that the microscopic architecture of the cell, the actin cytoskeleton, has a 24-hour rhythm in skin cells grown in a dish,” said Ned Hoyle, lead author of the paper and a postdoctoral fellow at the MRC Laboratory. “One of the main jobs of these cells in a whole animal is to respond to wounds by moving into them and secreting proteins to repair the damage,” said Hoyle. The researchers believe this healing process is driven by individual cells’ internal circadian clocks -- and not signals transmitted throughout the body. Hoyle also speculated that cellular clocks at the site of surgery could be “adjusted to the best time for healing before the operation,” while more generally, “the time of surgery could be scheduled to coincide with each patient’s biological time.” So that “larks,” or early risers, could see the surgeon in the morning, while “owls,” or late risers, would be treated in the afternoon. And there are other examples as well. The existence of daytime variation in Chemotherapy efficiency and toxicity has been well known for many years. And more recent experiments have shown that Morning Vaccination with a flu shot enhances immune response more than afternoon vaccination. Understand this more in years to Come will Lead to Cure of Jet Lag one day. A HOME DREAM OR DREAM HOME..?

O

wning a place in Vancouver is becoming a dream for average Canadians after this longest boom in real estate history of the city and recent changes in mortgage rules. “What will happen to real estate market after January 2018? Are prices coming down?” Realtors and mortgage professionals are asked this question so many times in a day. As professionals, we try our best to answer their concerns based on what they want to do and what is their future plan. This is hard to predict what exactly the market will be like after January 2018, but one thing is for sure that market will be shifting towards stability. Based on law of demand supply, it is so easy to

predict that housing needs are not met foreign buyers. Jaipur Gets a New Sculpture Park: Here Is What You Need to Know about It Jaipur, the pink city, is getting a new sculpture park at one of its most famous landmarks.

R

ajasthan’s capital city of Jaipur is also the one with the most historical riches. Jaipur showcases the royal heritage and flamboyance, and the chaotic hustle and bustle of the state, all within its city borders. You’ll see sprawling palaces and forts, loud street shops, cycle rickshaws and camels, and people dodging their way through all of that. And come December 2017, you’ll also see a sculpture park in one of the most recognizable landmarks of a city that is chockfull of them. Here’s everything you want to know about the Jaipur’s brand new sculpture park. ALSO READ: Here are 5 things you should definitely do in Jaipur It is India’s first sculpture park In a city full of attractions that are centuries old, the sculpture park will be a draw thanks to its newness. This is India’s first ever sculpture park. Interestingly, the idea of sculpture parks, of viewing art in the fresh outdoors, is something that dates back to the 18th century, when Rajasthan’s Rajput kingdoms ruled the land. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park in Wakefield, England was one of the earliest examples of a sculpture park. It is located in the Madhavendra Palace of Nahargarh Fort We mentioned before that Jaipur’s new sculpture park will be located in one of Jaipur’s most renowned landmarks: the Nahargarh Fort. the show promises to be very interesting. It will showcase both Indian and international artists’ works. This year, the works of 15 Indian and nine international artists will be shown. Major international art galleries like Salon 94, New York, Livingstone Gallery, The Hague and Hauser & Wirth, London are lending their works.

overlooks the city from a ridge towards the north. The sculpture park is at the Madhavendra Palace, once the main palace of the Rajput kings that reigned from the fort. The two-storied palace has multipled apartments across two stories, each with their own name and once dedicated to royal family members.

It will host an annual exhibition of art The sculpture park at the fort is going to host an annual art and sculpture exhibition, with the first one starting on December 10, 2017. Dedicated to contemporary art and placed in a historic setting,

This is the first initiative of its kind The park itself is a first in India, and so is the public-private partnership that brought it to life. The government of Rajasthan has come together with the non-profit Saat Saath Arts for the park, collaborating with a number of corporate sponsors and private contributors to showcase contemporary art at a heritage site. Peter Nagy, the Director of Nature Morte Art, is curating the exhibition. NOW READ: Nahargarh Fort Near Jaipur in Rajasthan May Soon Get A Thrilling Zipline The new sculpture park in Jaipur is a creative experiment by the state’s tourism to highlight India’s artwork and one of the city’s historical treasures. Jaipur, of course, is no stranger to mixing contemporary culture with heritage. The Jaipur Photo international photography festival and Jaipur Literature Festival are examples of similar initiatives in the past. Based on their success, the Sculpture Park at Nahargarh Fort should be a hit as well. You’ll have to travel to the pink city this December to find out.
