Parenting at its’ best… By: Surinder Kochhar [Shaun]
N
oble parents have noble children. Every wise parent understands that children are mirrors, they reflect back to us, all we say and do. They are the end result of their life time efforts. A Parent sacrifice his today so that his/her children can have a better tomorrow. Grown up children realize better when they become parents. The greatest legacy one can pass on to one’s children and grandchildren is not money or other material things accumulated over a period of time, but rather a legacy of character, respect, dignity and hard work. From my own experience, as a son, a father and a grandfather, I sincerely believe that for the child, and for the parent seeking to guide him, it is more important to facilitate the way for the child - who want to know- than to put him on a diet of facts he is not ready to embrace. There is no better proven friendship, no love, like that of the parent, for the child on this earth

Uri actor Yami Gautam:
Stories on women heroes from the armed forces must be done
Y
ami Gautam, who will next be seen in the upcoming film Uri, says there is a need for stories of more stronger women on the silver screen. Yami is excited to be a part of a real life story based on the armed forces. So much so, that it instantly inspired her to hope to bring forth stories of women who have been trailblazers and pioneers in the armed forces in India. “With the way content is evolving and such compelling stories coming out, there’s a great need for stories of more stronger women. Some amazingly strong powerful women characters have been seen in recent films,” Yami said in a statement. The 29-year-old actor is inspired by two women Punita Arora, the first woman in India to attain the rank of Lt. General in the Indian Army and Priya Jhingan who wrote a letter to the then Army Chief in 1992 to be accepted as a woman in the armed forces and a year later she was, becoming the first
Indian woman to have joined the Army. Yami said that when she was shooting for Uri, she was very intrigued largely with the stories of personnel from the armed forces. She said: “It truly does make me wonder if stories of women from such background is something that could make for compelling stories. We have incredible women heroes from the army, navy who have done incredible acts in their careers. “I think these stories must be done and Uri has really been a reason to bring forth such a thought to me.” Uri also stars Vicky Kaushal, who will be seen playing the role of an Indian commando who is involved in the 2016 surgical strikes.Based on the surgical strikes of 2016 carried out by the Indian Armed Forces, Uri traces the significant event. It also features Kirti Kulhari and Paresh Rawal in lead roles. Produced by RSVP movies, Uri will hit the theatres on January 11, 2019. Cortsey: INDIAN EXPRESS
Rajkummar Rao: Content is the new entertainment
A
ctor Rajkummar Rao, who has delivered some pathbreaking performances since his Bollywood debut, says content is the new entertainment — whether it is through the web, films or audio — and that he is glad to be part of such a welcome change. The actor said, “I think content is the new entertainment. People want to experience something new, be it on-screen or audio. The definition of entertainment is definitely changing and I’m glad that I get to be a part and contribute to this welcome change.” Rajkummar has collaborated with Radhika Apte and Kalki Koechlin for the first time to narrate the audible adaptation of Hussain Zaidi’s novel, “Mafia Queens of Mumbai”. Asked how important is it for such stories to be told, he said, “I think it’s extremely important because till date we only know about the men in mafia, but these remarkable women are worth knowing, the situations that shaped their lives and the emotions that shaped their destiny.” Did he get a chance to read the book? “I did not get a chance to read the

book prior to coming on board for Audible. Thanks to this collaboration, I not only got to narrate the ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’, but also discover the complex situations, characters and uncertainty that shaped each of these women’s stories. Through the book I discovered a whole new Mumbai. “The character that I liked the most was of ‘Sapna Didi’ – the way she changed herself to avenge her husband, her life, her vengeance… It is so powerful. I was narrating her story, but also listening to it for the first time and it was fascinating. For me, Sapna’s story was a thriller and romance combined into one, it was shocking, gripping and impressive to know what she went through. I know it’s going to be a favourite among listeners,” he said. Rajkummar, who was last seen onscreen in Stree, says he would love to work with Radhika and Kalki in films too. “It has to be a story where we can all do justice to our parts and have good roles. But of course, I would love to work with Radhika and Kalki,” he said Cortsey: IANS

FAQs - One Million Life Insurance with Half Million Guaranteed Cash Values at age 65
Sandeep Ahuja
I
n the previous issue, I had discussed the unique features of the extremely remarkable life insurance plan Adaptable underwritten by UL Mutual Insurance Company. While the plan is quite impressive, as a prospective client, one may have queries about the plan. I hope the below-mentioned questions and their answers will clarify your queries: • For how long shall we have to pay? You shall have to pay for a minimum of 20 years. To make it more affordable, we can increase payment period till age 25, 35, 45, 55, 65, 75, 85 and 95 life insurance available at age 75. • Can we buy the lower face amount or shall we have to buy one million dollar coverage? No, it’s not mandatory to buy a million dollar coverage. As per your own affordability, you can purchase coverage for lower amounts starting from $25,000. The great feature is that the cash values will be half the amount of coverage at age 65. For example, for 100,000 coverage- 50,000 cash value; for 200,000 coverage100,000 cash value and; for 500,000 coverage- 250,000 cash values at age 65- in all cases, if you buy the plan before age 45. • Through which insurance company do you do this insurance? The Adaptable insurance plan in which the cash values at age 65 are ‘guaranteed’ half of the sum insured, is offered by UL Mutual. • Since when has this UL Mutual Insurance Company been in existence? UL Mutual is in the insurance business since 1889. Recognized in the insurance and financial services market for its financial strength, UL Mutual has a solvency ratio of more than 200% and has the strength of more than 250,000 members. UL Mutual is a member company of Assuris. Founded as a notfor-profit organization in 1990, Assuris is designated by the federal Minister of Finance under the Insurance Companies Act of Canada. It protects Canadian policyholders if their life insurance company fails. • If I cancel my policy after five years, do I get something back? No, you won’t get anything. Term Life insurance is usually for short-term and Permanent Insurance is for long-term needs. If you cancel the insurance policy within ten years, there are no cash values and you will lose all the money. But, if you are planning insurance for a short-term period, it’s better to buy some Term Insurance such as Term 10, 20, 30 or till age 40. It should be kept in mind though - you cannot treat your life insurance as a bank account which can be encashed within 3-4 years. It doesn’t go like that Life insurance is a long-term plan. • When does the cash value start building up? The cash values in the
Adaptable plan start building up after ten years and the biggest attraction of the plan is that at age 65, cash values will be half of the face value and its guaranteed (applicable before age 45). • Once the market fluctuates in case the interest rate goes down or if the company doesn’t make any income, will my cash values at age 65 change or reduce? No. Adaptable life insurance contract is a guaranteed and permanent plan. It doesn’t fluctuate with the fluctuating interest rate of the market and also, doesn’t depend upon the income of insurance company. If you pay your premium on time as per your chosen period, nothing can be changed. The life insurance contract is ‘fully guaranteed’. • What options do I have, especially at age 65 if I want to withdraw the money? You have a few options: a) Y ou can fully surrender the contract and encash the money/funds but tax will be applicable. The surplus of the total ACB will be imposed in relation to the total net surrender value. b) You can partially cancel the policy as per your requirement and encash the money from time to time. The tax will be applicable. The pro rata surplus of the total ACB will be imposed in relation to the total net surrender value. c) You can borrow against the cash values. In case of a loan, the excess of the ACB is taxable. (Note: Please, must see Provisions Adaptable at our website: https://www. punjabinsurance.ca/pdfs/ Provisions-AdaptableADA11510A.pdf) • I like the plan, but right now, I can’t afford much premium. What shall I do if I want to purchase? You can purchase the plan to select the coverage as per your future needs. Part A coverage ‘Term’ – can be done as per your needs (even for higher amounts of coverage, which is a very affordable/reasonable option). Furthermore, you have the option to upgrade it to Permanent Plan as per your needs, if you feel that your affordability will increase in the future. You will be given this opportunity three times - in 3rd year, 5th year and 7th year respectively. • If I lose the job, how should I pay the premium? We can add a rider on the insurance policy ‘WPLE’. By adding that, your premiums are waived for a maximum of 12 months per 5 years period. Once the insurance policy has been in force for one year and, if you lose your job due to a lay off (due to slow work), merger or acquisition of companies, strike or lock-out as well as pregnancy, your premium will be waived off as long as the disability lasts. For the period specified by Law. If you add disability rider, during your period of disability, after a waiting period of six months of total disability, your premium will be waived as long as the total disability lasts. Premiums paid during this waiting period of six months are also reimbursed. For the first 24 months, total disability means being prevented by an incapacity resulting from an accident or illness from performing each and every task related to insured’s principal occupation. WPLE is also very
www.entertainmentmagazine.ca
good for female clients who are in the future plan of having a baby. If you have this rider, once the policy has been in force for one year, and you go on maternity leave, the premium will be waived off as per government provisions. This Adaptable plan in very unique in nature. It is very close to the needs of the community who always want a secure future for their kids/family and also want to save money for their ‘golden age’. Parents whose kids are studying in some professional field and are planning to enter the workforce soon should purchase
/saentertainmentmagazine
coverage under this plan so that they may help their kids make good financial decisions to start early for life insurance needs and saving habits. Those in 35-45 age bracket- if they don’t have any savings till date for their retirement and don’t have any insurance, they must consider this plan. It is important that Insurance advisors should do proper life insurance and financial needs analysis before advising the clients to opt for this plan. One has to be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident to opt for this plan and the insurance
company has to conduct thorough medical and financial underwriting beforehand. These points have been discussed for information purpose only. Once you do insurance, the underlying provisions of Adaptable plan govern. It gives me delight to convey that due to its immense popularity among clients, this wonderful promotion has been extended till December 31, 2018. To reap maximum benefit of this unique opportunity, without wasting time, please contact me immediately. 5 Unique Christmas Traditions From Around the World
The world is, of course, a multicultural place, with its people celebrating myriad holidays during the final weeks of the year, from Hanukkah to Kwanzaa.
W
ith one-third of the world’s population Christian, Christmas is celebrated in many nations. Yet in places where Christians are in the minority — take Japan, for example, where less than 1 percent of the population follow the religion — many may still honor the holiday, albeit in unexpected ways.
1. The Philippines No other country in the world celebrates the season quite like Filipinos, the third-largest Catholic nation in the world. The Philippines one-up the United States’ propensity for immediately replacing Halloween décor with Christmas lights by commencing celebrations in September — making it the longest Christmas celebration in the world. Christmas the Philippines Christmas is celebrated from September until January in the Philippines. The southeast Asian’s Catholicism is a holdover from the Spanish colonial era of the Philippines, as are traditions like the marathon nine-day series of Christmas masses called simbang gabi.

So, too, are the festive parols, or star-shaped lanterns, that brighten windows during the entire holiday
season. The lights, which are meant to reflect the Star of Bethlehem in design, are named after the Spanish
word for lantern, farol.
2. Sweden www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

The Yule Log is customary in European-derived Christmas traditions. It crackles brightly on many an American TV as something of a faux hearth. The French bake a confectionary version of the holiday-themed tree part. But Sweden skips the wood and goes for the goat instead. The Yule Goat isn’t a real animal; it’s typically made almost entirely of straw. In the Swedish tongue, the Christmas goat is known as the Julbok. The Julbok’s origins are rooted in mythology, but it’s been warmly adopted by Swedes as part of modern Christian tradition — perhaps too warmly. The Swedish town of Gävle has erected a giant version of the Yule Goat since 1966. And every year since, people have tried to torch it, kidnap it and otherwise harass the apparently rather expensive symbol of Christmas joy. At least 28 of the 45 goats have succumbed to what the authorities dub as “vandals.”

Roast turkey, steamed pudding and gingerbread all might end up on the table. But it’s not all about plum pudding, which is increasingly served with ice cream to help tolerate the Australian summer temperatures, anyway. To further beat the heat, up to 40,000 Australians flock to Bondi Beach in Sydney at Christmastime — and beaches mean barbecues.
4. Finland Finland seems made for Christmas. The statement, which has been tweaked a bit since it was first read in the 13th century, offers a surprisingly emphatic reminder that any sort of unruly behavior that challenges the holiday “shall under aggravating circumstances be guilty and punished according to what the law and statutes prescribe for each and every offense separately.”
5. France In France, Christmas Day is always preceded by a “Reveillon”, which means staying awake to usher in the next day, according to Susi Seguret, who leads the Seasonal School of Culinary Arts in several different cities, including Paris. “This means essentially gathering with friends, often a dozen or more, and enjoying a multi-course dinner, in company of many bottles of wine and much champagne,” Seguret says. “This is a time to dress to the nines, even if at home, and to get out the best china and silver and crystal and all the candles.” Seguret says the meal always includes fresh oysters, a fish course, a poultry course, a meat course, an extensive cheese platter and delicate desserts. “In the south of France, around Provence, les treize desserts — the 13 desserts, representing Jesus and the 12 apostles — figure into the season.” Courtesy: coca-colacompany.com
3. Australia In Australia, Christmas falls right in the middle of some of the hottest weather of the year. Because of the extreme heat, Christmas is often marked by electrical storms and brush-fires rather than gently falling snow.

Arjun Kapoor: India’s Most Wanted will bring out everybody’s patriotic side
A
rjun Kapoor believes his next India’s Most Wanted will ignite patriotism in people. The film, a tribute to unsung heroes, centres around the capture of India’s most wanted, without firing a single bullet. The actor, who plays an intelligence officer in the film, wrapped up the project Monday. “It is a scary and real story. It will be fascinating for audience to see it because when I heard about it, it left me in shock. Also, it made me feel proud to be an Indian. It is a film that will bring out your patriotic side,” Arjun told PTI. The actor said unsung heroes need to be respected and praised. “Men in uniform defend and protect us but there are so many young heroes who protect us in plain clothes in plain sight. They are also the true unsung heroes and they deserve to be respected and applauded for keeping our country safe. The film is based on one such important event that changed the course of our country’s history,” he said. Directed by Raj Kumar Gupta, the film is slated to be released on May 24, 2019. Gupta is co-producing with Fox Star Studios. Arjun, 33, also has Ashutosh

ctress Mouni Roy, who made her Hindi film debut with Gold, has said that she can now die happily after working with megastar Amitabh Bachchan in her forthcoming film Brahmastra. “I can die now happily after doing the scenes with him (Amitabh). It can’t get better than that for me working with him in a film,” Mouni said while interacting with media as the newly appointed brand ambassador for RSH Global, a personal care company for their new marketing campaign ‘Beauty By Nature’ on Friday. Mouni is sharing screen space with Amitabh for the first time in their forthcoming film Brahmastra. When asked Mouni if Amitabh gave her any acting advice while shooting for the film, she said, “No... he didn’t give me any specific advice as such while working because Ayan (Mukherji) used to be there on film sets but I just lost my focus on the day when I was working with him.” “I was just staring at his face thinking that what an opportunity God has given me because he is legendary as we all know so, I feel very blessed and lucky to have worked with him,” she added. After making an impressive debut in Gold, Mouni will be seen in Brahmastra along with Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt. She also has Made in China in her kitty along with Rajkummar Rao. She will also star opposite John Abraham in Romeo Akbar Walter (RAW). We start practising sword fighting in the next coming weeks.” The film is slated to release on December 6, 2019.
lia Bhatt has made it clear that her well-wishers have to wait to see her marriage happening whenever it does. There were reports that Alia is going to tie the knot with actor Ranbir Kapoor in 2019 but the actor says that people have to wait. “If people are waiting for my wedding then, they have to wait for it. I think climax should be good and there should be a happy ending to it,” she said while interacting with media at Lux Golden Rose Awards 2018 on Sunday, here. Alia and Ranbir sort of made their relationship official when both of them walked together hand-in-hand at Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja’s wedding reception earlier this year. They are also going to be seen together for the first time in “Brahmastra”. Reacting on Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s impending wedding which
is going to take place in Jodhpur, Alia said, “I am really happy and excited that PC (Priyanka Chopra) is getting married. I am very excited to see PC and her wedding attire. I am very fond of her and I have lot of warmth and love for her. I hope that she will have a beautiful wedding. I am sure she will make a beautiful bride and she should have a beautiful life.” Alia is often being compared with Kareena Kapoor Khan in terms of their look and acting style and when asked that ow does she take that comparison, she said, “It’s a compliment for me but I don’t think it’s true because I think there is going to be only one Bebo (Kareena Kapoor Khan) and I am very different from her so, I don’t think it’s fair to draw comparison between us.” Brahmastra is written and directed by Ayan Mukherji and produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. Motivation: What It Is and How It Works?
Each one of us has some goals in life that we want to achieve. While some of those goals might be easy to achieve, others can be difficult, yet life defining. Though, it’s important to always remember that embracing struggles that come along our way and overcoming them is the only way to succeed in life.
Ritika Tiwari Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist
M
otivation is the force that helps us achieve our goals and keeps us afloat even hard times. In this article, we will be discussing what motivation is and how it works. What is motivation? Motivation is the reason behind people’s goals and actions. It is an internal phenomenon that makes us behave or act in a particular way. It is about the unmet needs that we need to satisfy and the goals that we want to fulfil in our lives. Whether you are doing a simple household chore or making a big life change, all of those movements are made by us for a reason. We do them because those actions allow us to fulfil something that we value. Motivation pushes us to go from the start of the line to the finish. The satisfaction and content that follows after finishing all these tasks empower us to keep moving forward. How does motivation work? Motivation is a driving force -- It all begins with finding the right source. Also, motivation can be intrinsic or extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation roots from achieving a personal goal that gives you intense satisfaction. For example, buying a laptop or the latest mobile phone that hit the market. Extrinsic motivation comes from a source that helps you move to a higher level and get admiration from people around you. For instance, if your professor has given a difficult task at college and you complete it correctly to get extra credits. Here are some ways to keep yourself always motivated: 1. Set smaller goals Break your long-term goals into several small sub-goals, so that every time you achieve a goal you are excited and motivated
14
december 2018
to move forward to the next one until you achieve the final goal. For instance, if you want to buy a house in the next five years, create short-term money saving goals. You can save $500 every month instead of setting a goal to save $6,000 in the entire year, which sounds more difficult to achieve. 2. Follow a motivating mantra Create a short mantra to keep yourself going. Every morning after waking up and every night before going to bed, look in in the mirror and recite the mantra loudly to yourself. It can be some-
thing as simple as -- “I am strong and I am going to accomplish all my goals.” This will help you stay motivated and start your day on the right note. 3. Routine and rituals Set a routine for all five days of the week and relax during the weekends without any fixed schedule. If yoga relaxes you, start your day with it and follow it with a healthy, omega-3 and protein-rich breakfast. End your day by reading a book or listening to calming music to get a good night’s sleep. After all, when your mind is relaxed, you feel
more motivated and confident in achieving your goals. 4. Cut yourself some slack If you can’t get ahead of an obstacle, it is okay to take a step back and rework things. By accepting your shortcomings and fears, you are giving yourself a chance to move ahead. If things aren’t working out as planned, take a few days off to clear the mind only to return feeling recharged and rejuvenated. Practising these habits daily will get you through all difficult times and always keep you motivated to achieve your goals..

How to Stop Babies, Toddlers and Kids from Thumb Sucking: An Orthodontist’s Guide
Dr Vishal Sharma BSc, DDS, Cert. Ortho. FRCD(C), FCDS(BC)
I
’ve had a multitude of parents over the years come in for a visit at Aura Orthodontics and ask me about an easy way to stop thumbsucking. It’s a major concern for them because they’ve heard the horror stories of children sucking their thumbs and needing extensive orthodontic care. While, yes, there is a time to intervene and prolonged thumb sucking can create issues with the teeth and jaws, which we’ll cover shortly, when it comes to infants and even toddlers, you can breathe a sigh of relief because it’s actually completely normal. It’s estimated that somewhere around 95 percent of babies suck their thumb or fingers at some point during the first year of life and occasionally it even begins in the womb.
Thumb Sucking in Babies
When parents inquire as to how to stop thumb sucking in babies, I always tell them that discouraging the behavior isn’t necessary or advised. While if it really distresses you, you could try to introduce a pacifier to your infant instead (pacifiers have the benefit of reducing the risk of SIDS) there’s no need to break the habit in infancy for the sake of dental health. So, what is the cause of thumb sucking? Babies are born with a sucking reflex because it’s how they eat. It’s also extremely soothing to them. Even though infants will suck on pretty much anything, the thumb just happens to be right there on their hand making it an easy target before they have the coordination to reach for anything else. It gives them a sense of security in a new, loud, unfamiliar world. Before you start imagining your kid entering college with their thumb in their mouth, just know that nearly 80 percent of little ones stop thumb sucking on their own by age five and 95 percent quit by age six. While I typically recommend parents start attempting to nix the habit when their child turns four or five, if your kiddo doesn’t have any permanent teeth in, it’s not the end of the world if they continue on for a little bit longer and it likely won’t cause any damage.
How Does Thumb Sucking Affect Teeth?
If your child does continue to suck their thumb after their permanent teeth begin to erupt, it can create some issues. The type and severity of problems will depend on how long the habit persists, the intensity of the thumb sucking (some children suck more forcefully than others) and the frequency. The pressure will eventu-
18
december 2018
ally create movement in the teeth, especially the front ones. Often, the top front teeth will stick out and the bottom teeth will tip inward towards the tongue. Other times, spaces will develop between the teeth. An open bite is also a possibility. This is where the upper and lower teeth don’t overlap even when the mouth closed and the back teeth are touching because they’ve been forced outwards. Since children’s bones are still developing and growing, prolonged thumb sucking can affect the formation of the jaw. The upper jaw may stick out excessively (overjet or overbite) or a crossbite can develop, which is when the upper jaw is too narrow in comparison to the lower jaw and one or more of the top teeth are positioned behind one or more of the bottom teeth. Crossbites can eventually lead to permanent, unwanted changes in facial and bone structure. Occasionally, thumb sucking interferes with the growth of the roof of the mouth, technically called the palate, which can have a negative impact on chewing, swallowing and even speaking.
How Can I Stop My Child’s Thumb Sucking? Understanding the reason for thumb sucking is the key to stopping it. Some kids suck their thumb when they’re nervous or need to relieve stress, while others do it without thinking. If it’s a nervous habit, try to get to the
bottom of what’s causing them to feel anxious and, if possible, make changes to address the problem. Though it will vary depending on the child, these are some basic ideas for breaking the habit: • Have a chat with your child if they’re old enough to understand the concept of bad habits. Explain the risks of continuing to suck their thumb, tell them it’s time to stop and give them verbal reminders if they absentmindedly do it throughout the day. Allowing them to create their own goals will make them feel more invested in the process and increase the odds of success. • Once your child has set their mind to stopping, painting the nail on that finger or putting a Band-Aid on it can be a good physical reminder of their plan to quit. For those who suck their thumb at night while sleeping, have them wear a glove or a sock on the hand at bedtime. • Use positive reinforcement with plenty of praise and encouragement. Avoid the urge to yell at your little one or punish them as this won’t help and will just create more stress
making them turn to their thumb. • S wipe some Mavala Stop on their fingernails if they’re over the age of three. It goes on like nail polish and looks like clear enamel so it’s barely noticeable. This over-the-counter remedy is harmless yet tastes very bitter. The unappealing flavor dissuades children from putting their fingers or thumbs in their mouth eventually helping to break the habit. It’s also great for nail biting! •D on’t overlook the power of prizes. Create a chart or some sort of visual and allow your child to track their progress with quitting thumb sucking using stickers or colorful markers. When they reach a predetermined milestone, reward them with a small toy or by letting them choose a fun activity to do together. •M ake a mental note of when they suck their thumb. If you notice, for example, they always tend to do it after an argument with a sibling or following dinner, plan to distract them with something else at those times. •G ive them emotional support. Breaking a habit is hard, particularly one that brings comfort and a feeling of security. While your child is in the midst of quitting, spend more time with them and always be ready to listen. If you try these strategies and your child still doesn’t stop sucking their thumb, it could be time to call in an orthodontist. As an orthodontist in Surrey, Langley and Abbotsford, I offer complimentary consultations and even monitor the development of children’s teeth and jaws for free until the time is right to start treatment. I can give you additional pointers, support and, if necessary, use certain appliances to eliminate the habit. Schedule an appointment at Aura Orthodontics and we’ll work with you to develop the best solution for your child’s needs.

am strong believer of above statement, because I can vouch for it. This is taken from title of the famous book ‘Spring of Inspiration’ written by world famous Life Coach and Mind Trainer Dr. Jeetendra Adhia. I am thankful to Punjab Bhawan for hosting an event on last Saturday, regarding book ceremony of ‘Prerna Da Jharna’ Punjabi Translation of above book by renowned Punjabi writer and Journalist Mr Bakhshinder. Events really happen in mind first, who would have thought that my father Mr Bakhshinder and I would meet Dr. Adhia in summer of 2017, and we would be able to get his best seller book translated in Punjabi and gift it to Punjabi readers in Surrey. But wait a minute, it never happened by any co-incidence. When three of us spent some time together, I shared with them that I love Dr. Adhia’s book on Mind Power and I want it to be translated in Punjabi, so that all our community can benefit from it. Dr. Adhia liked the idea and he encouraged my father to do it, he also motivated me to learn more about this subject and do educational seminars in Surrey. Long story short, I went to India in December 2017 to take training from Dr. Adhia and declared it right there that I will get his books translated in Punjabi. I want to thank my father, who is known as a perfectionist in Punjabi writers’ community. He worked hard for so many hours on bringing this book in perfect Punjabi

I observed that everyone in Surrey is concerned about increasing crimes related to Drugs and Violence. I want to offer my help on this. I am ready to volunteer my time for doing seminars for students and teenager in their Schools, Libraries, social groups or any organization who support them. I strongly believe that we need to educate our youth about setting their goals in their lives and how they can achieve these goals by using the power of their sub conscious mind. Please feel free to contact me if any of you could connect me to any such organization who wants to help our youth. Because I believeversion. This book is available in both languages at India Book world in York Centre, Surrey. I feel great to share it with readers of Entertainment magazine that I did about 8-10 seminars on Mind Power (based on above book) at different places in Surrey so far in 2018. I got great response from the participants and I feel good they start
using the ideas in their personal and professional lives. Some people believe that I am doing these seminars to make money and they ask for ticket price. I do these seminars for free. It is not my business; I do it for my passion only. I did a couple of seminars to support my favorite charity and we asked for voluntary contributions from participants.

9 Fashion Tips For Really Cold Winter Weather
With winter comes the age-old dilemma of choosing between comfort and fashion. But that doesn’t always have to be the case. You should always dress warmly to make sure you hold onto as much of your body heat as possible. But you have to sacrifice your sense of fashion. Here are a few handy tips to help you stay warm and fashionable, no matter how frightfully cold the weather outside gets.
Ritika Tiwari Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist
1. Know Your Fabrics To make a super-warm, non-bulky outfit, stick to fabrics that trap in heat like silk, wool, fleece, cashmere, flannel and down. These fabrics allow you to wear fewer layers, stay comfortable, warm, and classy. 2. Layer up What’s the most practical way to dress when it’s really cold? Layering! It might sound cliché, but it’s true and always on-trend. Not only do layers trap the heat to insulate your body, but they are also something you can peel off when you’re indoors or travelling. Ideally, you should wear about four layers. Start with a light, long-sleeved base layer, then a warm inner layer, followed by an insulating layer and lastly, a protective outer layer. An example would be a turtleneck, under a sweater, under a jacket, under a coat. And here’s the good news about layers - more layers mean more styling opportunities! 3. Protect your key points You could lose a lot of heat through your hands, neck, feet, and head. That’s why you shouldn’t forget about these more sensitive regions of your body. Invest in a good pair of gloves or mittens that are warm, yet practical. Use woollen (fleece also works) socks and get multiple pairs, if needed. Be careful to keep your feet comfortable and not completely cut off the circulation. Learn to love and embrace scarves. Not only do they keep your neck warm, but they can be worn in numerous ways. Lastly, invest in a hat that is your style and is something that you actually want to wear. 4. Use a good quality coat You’ll be spending a lot of time with your coat. So don’t cop out on the quality. Owning a good, waterproof coat not only makes you feel warm and cosy but also amps up
24

Use scarves, earmuffs, hats, etc. to stay chic. Lastly, brighten up our outfits by adding some color that’s not the usual grey, white, or black.
your style quotient. Winter coats come in different styles and fits, so there’s always something for everyone. Just remember, don’t sacrifice practicality over fashion when it comes to extremely cold weathers. 5. More layers on legs While most people wear multiple layers on their torso, they only wear one layer on their legs. This winter, keep yourself warm by having at least a base layer below your warm outer layer. 6. Boots
Winter boots are one of those things that are really hard to shop for, as we want them to be warm, comfortable, and fashionable. Invest in warm, waterproof, and insulated boots. The lining should be either wool or synthetic, but not cotton. 7. Stay Chic Just because it’s cold, it doesn’t mean you have to give up on fashion altogether. Add new life to your outer layer by using a belt. It’ll accentuate your waist and make it seem like you have a brand new coat. Also, don’t forget to accessorize.
8. Lip Balm Dry winter air can make your skin extra-sensitive, and make your lips chapped or flaky. Always carry a handy lip balm with you to seal in moisture, no matter where you go. 9. Keep dry All these fashion tips will amount to nothing if you get wet as that will cause the chill to set in more quickly. Make sure all of your outer layers are waterproof or water resistant. In winter, you are never short of choices as you get to wear more clothes than usual. If there’s one thing that’s crucial, that would be coordination. The right balance between your colors and layers is what will give you the complete look.

It is nice to be important but it is more important to be NICE…….
Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Health Coach of University of Victoria
IF YOU THINK DEEPLY, you will realize that kindness contains the whole essence of one’s good character & conduct. This is the best certificate one can get, since kindness is symbol of all good qualities of a person. Your conduct reveals your true character. Its cost’s almost nothing to be nice to someone. Such type of people goes out of their way to be very nice to others. When we do this, we leave there, a good feeling. It feels so much better to be nice than anything else.
Better to give than receive:
Whenever someone says that it is better to give than receive, the truth of that statement depends on who is getting the receiving. If a person has given their whole lives for a cause and haven’t received much, it might be much better for him to receive for a while in case of any eventuality; it is indeed pleasant to have the taste of ones’ own medicine of kindness, which is given and well received by others
Helping others is very important:
To treat the people in dire need of medical help by reaching out to them is a classic example. Doctors Without Bordersa Canadian charitable institution where medical doctors fly around the globe to help for free comes into mind. Contribution of Saint Mother Teresa is also worth appreciating. Giving back to society is what we are supposed to do.
Combine your giving with some form of physical activity, like walking: Volunteering is good to feel important: I’ve have been volunteering for many years in a variety of organizations and I felt I helped people or helped a cause, I
We need to be quick to appreciate the acts of kindness of others. A gesture of kindness deserves to be appreciated by a gesture or plain words. A smile costs nothing, but gives so much as a gesture of goodwill.
26
december 2018
believed in logically. I gained a lot in the process. Fun, frolic, friendship, a sense of purpose, a sense of being valued, is what I experienced. Volunteering gave me back a feeling of belonging and being needed which we all miss in our respective lives. Always remember, you need not be an expert in the field to help out. Always, think outside the box. Reach out, and the organization you want to help, that will facilitate a way for you to help them. Picking up something for someone who doesn’t know they dropped it, giving a cue to other driver[s] to merge ahead of you on the road, helping an elderly person accomplish something difficult e.g. crossing the road and reporting wrong doers/ criminals, are classic examples to quote a few. Our small small courtesies per diem show our love and respect for others and help us to be at cloud nine. I think the most rewarding way of helping others is, when we get the nod in the shape of: smiles, hugs, words of encouragement like Thank You; God bless you.
Charity begins at home:
When we are ready to “give back” then we can start right in our vicinity in general or at our neighborhood school. We can easily donate some of our off- work time to a noble cause. To contribute your hours without remuneration, is one of the best contributions, one can make.
Is It More Important to Be Nice or Kind?
Kindness is a gesture or an action. Kindness is making a decision to place others above ourselves, yield our priveldge/ stand in favor of others. It is the difference between acting and reacting. It’s as big as giving up our own needs and as small as sending an encouraging text. It will not be out of place to mention that there is passion in kindness in its quietest form. Striving for kindness is very important and has some positive side effects. It’s life giving. With kindness, we move with constancy to purpose and in such a way that lifts others up alongside us. Beyound doubt, kindness is a powerful tool to soften hearts when we need it the most. This guarantees good heath.
How the brain works?
The left side of the brain is responsible for controlling the right side of the body.
It also performs tasks that have to do with logic, such as in mathematics. On the other hand, the right hemisphere coordinates the left side of the body, and performs tasks that have to do with creativity. When we do acts of kindness, then, the neurotransmitter serotonin in our brain gives pleasure, which brings feelings of unity, peace and security inside us. These feelings prompt further desires for kindness both in our self and in any and all recipients. These feelings always have a positive side-affect.
Kindness uplifts and heals the world!
So, regardless of how our actions affect others, kindness pays off in the long-term. To be Kind is to be NICE! To be Kind is to love our self and to feel at ease for others. Therefore, if you really want to feel good, to win others and positively influence people and enjoy good health, we need to be kind.
A good attitude matters the most:
A positive attitude is collectively regarded as of far greater importance. To be a good Samaritan one need to be positive most of the time. Then your kindness brings your true conduct & character and becomes an important parameter for others to judge your personality and salute your efforts. As you are already aware, Kindness contains all the good ingredients like
I think a lot of people get intimidated by giving to charity. Perhaps they have this misconception that they have to donate large amounts of money or things of super high value. Well, that’s not true at all. I feel that the charity of your valued time for a noble cause is more valuable than the help in any currency. humbleness, honesty, pity, patience, tolerance, sympathy, love, affection, compassion, integrity, truthfulness, understanding, discrimination, helping attitude, adjustment with others.
Your little help is a boon to others- the needy:
In your daily routine, if you do little help to others, the response from others will be “So kind of you”. The example of Saint Teresa- who served humanity with right approach comes into my mind. It was only her “Kindness” & “Compassion” that lifted her above all others, even though doing right was the main aim & purpose of her struggle. The role played by Mahatma Gandhi of India, Nelson Mandela of South Africa and Edhi comes to my mind. Abdul Sattar Edhi was a Pakistani philanthropist, ascetic, and humanitarian who founded the Edhi Foundation, which runs the world’s largest volunteer Ambulance network, along with homeless shelters, animal shelter, rehab centres, and orphanages across Pakistan. Hats off to these noble and kind souls. There are myriads more. To be kind It requires a great deal of understanding of others, irrespective of their background, caste, creed, culture, ethnicity and heritage. Unless one develops an attitude of oneness of all, in spite of wide differences & attitudes of people, it is extremely difficult to be kind to all.
CONCLUSION:
I love to give because one time in my life, I needed help and people came to my rescue. It is al bilateral and implied arrangement of give and take. Help the needy in his/her hour of desperation is best help anyone can render and make others’ life comfortable and worth
We have the inherent feeling to be nice to ourselves and others. Niceness exhibits in kindness. Kindness is the basis for welfare of all. A person without kindness is susceptible to be just ordinary. The character & conduct of a person, revolves around one’s kindness. When we are Kind, on brain front, we are thinking and acting from the right hemisphere of our brain which governs compassion and wholistic thinking. When we are Right, we are thinking and acting from the left hemisphere of our brain which governs logic and rationality. So, regardless of how our actions affect others, KINDNESS pays off in the shape of long-term dividends to one’s self. Kindness uplifts and heals the universe.

he USP of this beloved non-profit charitable organisation is all the activities of daily life [ ADL] of the inhabitants are well taken care of by the management; namely- food, clothing, shelter, medical help, first aid, medicines, entertainment and extra curricular activities to quote a few. More so the peripheral area will be bedecked with a walking strip. This place is open for occupancy by elderly people through out the universe. The only stipulation is the qualified resident has to come lock, stock and barrel and BREATHING…… This is a unique idea where dear parents are being well taken of by denizens of the area now settled abroad in Canada to start with. Jawahar Padda has raised this institution from his vis-à-vis core family resources. During my confabulations, with Mr. Padda
locally, he informed me that, “it was, during my last visit to Golden Temple complex Amritsar – in the Sanctum Sanctorum areawhile offering my prayers, the idea came to me to help the helpless and needy. Waheguru [Almighty] showered on, we the family, His Blessings and after getting heartfelt and gleeful nod, from my wife and lovely two daughters- I pursued the idea. I successfully carried the responsibility of this herculean task to its fruition. We are like a farmer, who till the land and sow the seed, it is His sweet will to blossom the crop towards its fruition. It is He who does, we just make concerted efforts.” May God bless the Padda family with good health so that they can help as many people as possible and hand over the torch to the next generation…. A Girl in a Whirl Contd. from previous issue (Part 25) She parked her car somewhere at the Scott Road, and taught me how to board a bus and buy a ticket. Both of us got down at Scott Road sky train station. She showed me how to read zones and time validity of my ticket. The same ticket was also valid for the sky-train travel. We boarded a sky-train from there and came to King-George skytrain station. Then she taught me how to change the train to come back. We got off the train at Scott-Road station. We took the same number bus and reached the place where Jasmine had parked her car. We had to cross the road to reach our car, and it was a very disciplined way even to cross a road here. These advanced systems were pretty new for me. I was trying to remember as much as possible. But I was feeling pretty much lost. Then she dropped me at my place. 29. Working out for a job The next day, I was to attend my class. My counselor called me early morning to remind me of my class. She helped me plan my route. I went by myself to attend my class. I was registered for my three-week class by another counselor at another institution for new comers to Canada. I called Jasmine in the evening. She didn’t take my

phone. I left a message for her that I wanted to talk something very important to her. Soon I got a call from her. “Jasmine, I want to talk to you something very important but I don’t understand how to say?”, I said “Sonia, you can talk to me frankly.”, Jasmine encouraged me to speak up. “I don’t want to keep Sam’s any memory with me.”, I said. “I didn’t get it, Sonia. Say clearly what you are thinking.”, She asked. “I don’t want to keep this child.”, finally I said concretely. “Sonia, I can let you know both advantages and disadvantages of keeping your child. But this will be your personal decision. You can get a whole bunch of financial benefits for keeping this child. You will lose several legal and financial advantages for not keeping it. It would be better for you to consult your parents in this regard.”, Jasmine explained me many more things. I called my mom to know in this regard. She could say nothing except for weeping. I could neither understand nor decide anything. My three-week course started. I made many new friends there. Jasvir became my best friend. We were provided with beginners’ knowledge in the classes how to assimilate into Canadian culture. I began feeling at home. We were asked to learn how to

speak English, which is one of the two official languages of Canada. Secondly, we were asked to prepare our resumes and apply for at least labor jobs in order to gain Canadian work-experience. Thirdly, we were advised to gain basic knowledge of how to use a computer. Fourthly, we were advised to do volunteer work at Food Bank, schools, Sikh Temples, Hindu Temples, mosques, churches etc. until we get a job. This way we would get Canadian-work experience. We should shake hand properly when we meet either a male or a female. We were also advised to greet everybody with a smile and to help others in some way, if possible. Jasvir told me that I needed certain hours of work experience in order to get maternity benefits. The other day, my bhua also took my phone number and address from my mom, and came to see me. “Sonia, I had thought if my dear brother’s daughter, Sonia, came here, his whole family would also come to Canada permanently. How could I know that all this bad was going to happen to you? Please forgive me, honey. I’m very ashamed of myself.”, bhua said truthfully and wept. Even my eyes welled up. I quieted her down. “Who can fight against fate, aunt?”, I had nothing else to say. Contd. in next issue

How to plan a kids birthday party that all the kids will love. that work across this mix. Decide whether you are going to provide activities yourself or book an entertainer to provide the fun specialist activities you know your child and their friends will love.
Decide on the venue - at home or hiring a venue.
Think about whether you want the party at home; If so how much space do you have? How many children can you have in your home without everyone standing on each other’s toes? Do bear in mind if you are having a party for an under five-year-old, the parents will probably stay. This means you will need to provide drinks for the grown-ups too. So do think about how much space you have!
If going down the venue route book your venue as early as possible.

4 SERIOUS BENEFITS OF PLAYING DRESS UP FOR
CHILD DEVELOPMENT Confidence and self-esteem are extremely important as an adult. As you know the world can move pretty quickly, and you have to make confident decisions rapidly each and every day. When you promote confidence in your child’s self-expression that is evidenced through the costumes and outfits she wears, you help her become secure with who she is as a human being. This self-belief makes them realize they have the ability to be anyone or anything that they desire.
TEACHES COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Whether your child is wearing a store-bought Halloween costume or creates a simple outfit, communication skills benefit. Dress-up activities often lead to story-based play. This drives home the importance of effectively communicating the character and mindset of the person that your child is dressing up as. Successful communicative development opens a lot of doors for your children when they hit adulthood.
ENCOURAGES HAVING FUN
SPARKS IMAGINATION AND CREATIVITY
Artists and performers may never regain the incredible imagination and creative energy that they had as children. Children should have free reign to harness and express these early abilities. The first steps of brain development and learning in the areas of creativity and imaginative thinking are given a great boost when you encourage dress-up play.
DEVELOPS YOUR CHILD’S CONFIDENCE
www.entertainmentmagazine.ca
The benefits of smiling and laughing have been common scientific knowledge for decades. When your child laughs and smiles, he feels more confident about his actions and who he is. When your little girl laughs at her poorly created outfit in a mirror, she is self confidently admitting mistakes. And dress-up playtime that is full of giggles and laughter is just downright enjoyable and fun to be around. When your little girl wants to mimic your dress and behavior, encourage this desire. If your son wants to create a pirate costume, positively encourage his efforts. Dress-up play can stimulate so many creative and imaginative developmental skills which help make them a well-rounded and successful adult. Courtesy:mommyevolution.com

Why a Strong Employee and Employer Relationship Is Important Your employees spend a lot of time at work. They’re not just names and faces on your staffing rosters but are directly responsible for the success or failure of your organization.
Ritika Tiwari Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist
M
aintaining strong relationships with them is essential to making the workplace a better place to be. Strong relationships between employees and employers have an impact on staff turnover, workplace morale, job satisfaction, and even the overall quality of life. Ultimately, the employee-employer relationship is what makes an organization successful. The benefits of a strong employee and employer relationship include: 1. Fewer workplace conflicts Conflicts reduce productivity and increase disharmony. Employees and employers spend most of their energy arguing and gossiping, instead of working. When employees work at a place that feels comfortable, more like a home rather than a place full of cutthroat competition and conflicts, they work better. They’re less stressed, more trusting and treat each other well, which leads to fewer workplace conflicts. This, in turn, fosters better workplace relationships and great camaraderie. 2. Increased productivity When employees feel happy to work for you, they are more likely to put forth their best effort and maintain a personal stake in the projects they work on. It makes them more dedicated and enthusiastic about their work. Providing adequate compensation, recognition, and equipping your employees with the right tools for them to work better are some of the ways to increase productivity. Such employees even surprise you by coming up with suggestions on improving processes and procedures. They voluntarily take up more responsibilities and learn new skills to get even better at their jobs. 3. Greater morale and motivation Motivation is the reason for people’s actions, will, and goals. Your employees may have all the exper-

tise in the world, but unless they’re truly motivated, they won’t achieve their full potential. Work seems easy when people are motivated. Empowering your employees, valuing their opinions and feedback, providing personalized and constructive feedback, and expressing interest in their work are all different ways to provide motivation and boost morale.
quite costly for the organization. People are less likely to leave an organization when they feel valued, appreciated, and receive recognition for their workplace achievements. In other words, when you’re constantly engaging with your employees, they feel happier, appreciated, empowered, and are far more likely to remain loyal. They know they have a good thing going.
4. Employee retention and loyalty Employees who do not have an amicable relationship with their employers are a flight risk and hence, more likely to leave. Some of these employees may possess skills truly valuable to your organization. It’s an established fact that the cost of acquiring new employees is much higher than the costs of retention. A key departure could end up being
5. Less absenteeism Workplace stress is a major cause of employee absenteeism, wherein employees skip work often. This could be due to abusive behaviour at work, bullying, harassment, unrealistic goals and expectations, etc. When there is a better bond between employees and employers, the employees feel a lot safer, less stressed, and well-cared for.
6. Increased revenue Employees are the most valuable assets of any organization. The success of the organization depends upon their work. If they’re more productive, motivated to give their best every day at work, they do an excellent job, stay longer, and drive your business and revenue growth. Employee-employer relationships are what make or break an organization. Happy employees are more productive and work harder to meet their employees’ expectations. This helps the organization grow and succeed, which brings in more revenue and more business. That’s why working towards building strong relationships between employers and employees is well worth the effort.

How Social Media is impacting our daily lives and.... Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Health Coach of University of Victoria
Cont. from last edition part 3 You never know when you are visited by any investigation officer regarding any issue that you mistakenly or unknowingly discussed over the internet. Cheating and Relationship Issues – Many people have been cheated on the social media platform to propose and then marry each other. Individuals cheat each other by showing the fake feelings and incorrect/ fake information. Health Issues – The excess usage of social media can also have a negative impact on the health. Being glued to the screen people do not have time for other activities of daily life. Though moderation is the key, but some people fail to put brakes wherever warranted. Silicon Valley parents are raising their kids tech free and it should be a warning for us: Silicon Valley parents can see first hand that technology is potentially harmful to kids. Many parents are now restricting, or putting blanket restrictions for screen time for their children. A 2017 survey conducted by the Silicon Valley Community Foundation found among 907 Silicon Valley parents that despite high confidence in technology’s benefits, many parents now have serious concerns about tech’s impact on kids’ psychological and social development. Low-tech parenting has been a preference among Silicon Valley moguls for years: Turning kids into loyal customers of unhealthy products, companies make,
Social media is neither good nor bad or ugly. It depends on the user[s] when, why and how much one wants to give time for it. People from every walk of life are hooked to Social Media to the extent that it has relegated to the upper rung of addiction. Though we need Social Media from every angle – for the unparallel benefits it is bestowed upon- yet MODERATION IS THE KEY.

sell and make profit - isn’t exactly a new strategy. As per estimates, major tobacco companies spend nearly $9 billion a year, or $24 million a day, marketing their products in the hope that kids will use them for life. The same principle helps to explain why fast-food chains offer kids’ meals. Many parents are now restricting, or outright banning, screen time for their children. The trend follows a long-standing practice among high-level tech executives who have set limits for their own children for years. Silicon Valley’s low- and antitech parents may seem overly cautious, but they actually follow longstanding practices of former and current tech giants like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Tim Cook. In 2007, Bill Gates, the former CEO of Microsoft, implemented a cap on screen time when his daughter started developing an unhealthy habit of engagement to a video game. In Gate’s home kids are not allowed to have their own phones until they turned 14. At present, the average North American get their first phone around the age ten. Late Steve Jobs the ex CEO of Apple prohibited his kids from using the newly-released iPad. He limited the use technology by his kids while at home. Even Cook, the current Apple CEO, has stated that he doesn’t allow his nephew to join online social networks. Excess use of social media by adults can be detrimental to the society. Cook later conceded that Apple products aren’t meant for constant use. In and around Silicon Valley, in California USA, a number of low-tech schools have
popped up in an effort to reintroduce the basics. At the Waldorf School of the Peninsula, a private school in Los Altos, California, kids use chalkboards and No. 2 lead pencils. Faculty don’t introduce kids to screen-based devices until they reach the eighth grade. Schools have started accommodating the anti-tech parental requests for their kids.
Google has been making schools more high-tech with its suite of cloudbased computing apps whereas parents notice a ‘malaise of scrolling - which - they think, is detrimental in excess form for their kids’ health.’ “It is not out of place to mention that, the sooner the kids, adolescents, or teenagers get used to this platform, the easier it will be to make it their lifelong habit – which suits these mega companies.
Social Media is a new marketing tool – for business community in particular- that allows them to get to know their customers and prospects in ways that were previously not possible. Social Media is not a fad, it is proving to be just the beginning of the marketing revolution. Conclusion: Though, people who use social media alone, do not get their face-to-face social needs met. In case they are not having their social needs met in their daily lifestyle, outside of social media, it makes sense that looking at social media might make them feel even more lonelier. Ironically, now, Kids aren’t going out to play in the street or parks in full. Instead of that these lovely angels, when come back home – lock themselves in separate rooms, with eyes glued to devices. Needless to add that, excessive Cell Phone use for social media -very often- in myriads of cases daily, is leading to some tension in relationships-new as well as established ones. Conversely, there are plenty of simple, healthy ways to address these risks without resorting to harsh measures, like abandon the smartphone. In this present era of speedy life style and vying age of competition, where fast is eating the slow, the use of Social Media is quintessential for living life at its’ fullest. Regardless of how WE define social media, one thing’s for certain, it will continue to evolve and its use will expand in the time to come. In the process it will become more integrated into both our business and personal lives. “We do not make Love, Love makes us.”

Save water, and it will save you …. Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Health Coach of University of Victoria
Beyond an iota of doubt, we all are surrounded by water. It covers over 70 percent of our earth’s surface and makes up approximately 60 percent of the human body. So, why are so many people concerned about conserving water? Because, despite the fact that though there’s so much of it around us, yet -only a tiny fraction of that water (less than 1 percent) is accessible and safe for human consumption. Also consider that the average North American personally uses 80–100 gallons of water every day. With all of that water constantly flowing, it can be easy to forget just how rare freshwater really is. And, although it is possible to treat unsafe water e.g. sea water, in order to purify it for consumption, the process itself requires massive amounts of effort and money. So, when it comes down to it, every drop that can be conserved by us, will only help us all out in the long run. But how can each of us do our part to spread the word about the importance of water conservation? Well, believe it or not, sometimes a simple slogan can do wonders. Water is an integral part of our life: No one can survive without water. But nowadays we see that People from urban and semi urban areas in particular, don’t care about the problem. But still, there are many places on Earth where People can’t even Get DRINKING WATER. Conserve water, conserve life: Always conserve it, preserve it, and go with the flow. It takes a lot of Blue to stay Green. You never know the
Without money we can live, but without water we can’t live. To a Thirsty man, a drop of water is worth more than a bag of gold.

If there is no water, there is no life. It is Possible that the wars of the twenty-first centuryGod forbid- will be fought for water. Time to save water now to prevent war.
Water Covers 2/3 of the surface of the Earth but Only 0.002% is drinkable. So, save water. Water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink at myriads of places. This is a clear failure of humanhood. worth of water until the supply runs dry. If we don’t learn to conserve, one day, we all will be like a fish out of water. Water, water, water is every where, but millions of people around the globe are dying due to its nonavailability to drink. How much water we waste daily: As per estimates, about 95 percent of the water entering our homes goes down the drain. Running the tap while brushing our teeth can waste 4 gallons of water. Older toilets can use 3 gallons of clean water with every flush, while new toilets use as little as 1 gallon. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), water leakage may cause a home to waste 10,000 gallons of water per year. United States households lose over 1 trillion gallons in total each year. Ten percent of American homes waste 90 gallons of water on a daily basis. The situation in Canada is also pari- passu with the said stats. Save water to Secure our future: 96.5% of Earth’s water is in oceans as salt water. 3.5% of water is Freshwater lakes, frozen Glaciers & polar ice caps. From 3.5% of Fresh water, 70% - locked in ice caps and less than 1 % is readily accessible world’s fresh water. 50% of worlds’ Freshwater reserves lies in: Canada, Indonesia, Russia, Colombia, China, Brazil. 1/3rd of world’s population lives in such countries.
Water is the most critical resource issue of our lifetime and our next generation’s lifetime too. The health of our waters is the principal measure of how -we live on the land. Without water living is impossible: water is the most important substances on earth. All plants and creatures must have water to survive. In the event that there is insufficient or no water, there would be no life on earth, because, in the absence of water there will be no grains, no vegetation, nothing to cap it all. Water is the driver of all Nature: Nature always wears the colors of the spirit i.e. green in particular. In every drop of water, we drink, some of the water has already passed through many living organisms, [fishes, trees, bacteria, worms in the soil, including people]. Living systems cleanse water and make it fit, among other things, for human consumption. The exhibition of of water in art form- in various paintings et al - has been represented throughout the ages, from as far back as ancient Egypt we know water was displayed
on tomb walls as zigzag lines (hieroglyphic signs). Leonardo da Vinci an Italian polymath of the Renaissance, exhibited water flow in his scores of paintings to drive home the importance of water in our lives. Time is opportune to take remedial
When we save a river, we save a significant part of an ecosystem, and we save ourselves as well, because of our dependence–physical, economic, and spiritual, –on the water and our mere existence on earth. measures: Life on earth would not exist without liquid water. We all need to work -as a unit-to save water, sky and land for ourselves and for our future generations. A river is more than an amenity; it is a treasure. Life depends on water, but the reservoir[s] depend on us. If we don’t learn to conserve, we’ll all be like a fish out of water, and we know the ultimate result. We can save water daily during our activities of daily life, namely: turning off the water- in between- while brushing our teeth, saves more water than we all think. Water is a priceless treasure so please save it with pleasure. Rich or poor; everyone needs water. If we take care of water properly, then a safe and prosperous future is waiting for us. Conclusion: Save water, as we cannot manufacture it. Save Water, as it’s not just a drop in the bucket; it’s life. A drop of water is indeed life for a thirsty person. We, the humans, are wasting water everyday. We need to do our children, a favour by saving tomorrow’s life saver; Water I mean. Water is an essence of life. One can live without food for days but not without water. So, understand the importance of water and value; it not just for yourself but for the future generations. Water is the elixir of life. Save water save future. It takes a lot of blue to stay green. Water= Life Conservation = Future. Make Every Drop of Water Count. Let us save water; it will save our later generation as well!!

Why standing is a great exercise
W
definitely is a better habit than sitting, walking is better than standing. For an average adult, standing would burn about 190 calories in an hour while sitting would only burn 130 and would also contribute to fat storage. On the other hand, walking can burn up to 320 calories in the same time. However, walking may not always be possible for you, but standing mostly is.
e all know that movement constitutes exercise. However, what about just standing? If you sweat at the mere thought of breaking a sweat, this is definitely good news for you. Simply standing too is an exercise and not just that, it has innumerable benefits too.
Fat burns while you stand
When you sit, your body’s metabolism goes for a toss. As against this, just standing can turn the tables for you. Studies show that when you stand, your body starts burning fat, which it was storing when you were sitting. “The enzymes in blood vessels of muscles responsible for fat burning are shut off within hours of not standing,” Professor Marc Hamilton, of the University of Missouri, said.
Prevents diseases
A study published in the European Heart Journal showed that standing has multiples benefits, such as it improves
How many times do you get up from your seat?
one’s cholesterol, controls blood sugar and fat levels, and improved the good cholesterol levels. The study that involved 800 participants, showed that by standing for two extra hours every day, participants reduced their blood sugar levels by 2 per cent and fat levels by a whopping 11 per cent.
Why standing burns calories?
If you are wondering why would a task as simple as standing burn calories, it is because when you stand, you exercise your muscles in your legs, abdomen and butt. This expends more energy than sitting.
Standing vs walking
Now, if you think that standing can do justice to your day’s walking schedule and replace it, that’s not true. Though standing
If you have a job that involves you to sit, it is recommended that for every 30 minutes of sitting, you must stand for 10 minutes. So, let’s say you have an eight-hour shift, it would require you to stand 16 times every day.
What can you do?
If you want to incorporate standing more in your everyday life and replace sitting with it, you can try the following: 4 Look for a standing desk in your office and spend at least two hours of your shift while standing. 4 Walk and talk. If you are on conference calls, just get a headset and stand. It will be even better if you loiter around while you take the call. 4 Watch TV while you stand. Though it may sound like a bad idea, it is a good way to make your body burn more while the mind is elsewhere. 4G et a wearable device that will remind you to stand more. Courtesy: TNN

Exercises for toned and strong thighs O ur legs are the pillars that support our body and it’s easy to take them for granted. We use them every day and assume the walking or running we get in are sufficient to stay in shape. But to improve the tone of your leg muscles, you need to incorporate more focused exercises in your routine. Before we take you through the basics, let’s start by identifying the most important muscle group in the thigh area. The quads are a large muscle group that form the front of your thighs and include four muscles, namely rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis and vastus intermedius. Hamstrings are found at the back, and the abductor muscles found on the inside of the thighs. Make sure you stretch and warm up before you jump into this workout.
Squats
Target your hamstrings and quads, and tone your glutes too in the process. To do a squat, stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and your hands outstretched in front to help you balance. Now lower yourself, without bending your back, as if you were sitting on an imaginary chair. Your head and chest are likely to extend forward. Remember, your thighs should be parallel to the floor and your knees should bend at a 90-degree angle, without extending over your toes. Come back up to the starting position and do three sets of 10 reps each. Side-lying leg lifts All you need is a mat. Target your inner thighs with this exercise. Lie down on one side with your body forming a straight line. Extend your bottom arm for head and neck support, and place the top hand in front of your chest. Joining both legs together, lift the top leg off the floor as high as possible. Your hips should be stationary and toes should point forward. Hold the pose for two seconds and then lower the leg without touching the mat. Repeat the action and do two sets of 15 reps on each side.
27th
Lunges
This exercise also targets the leg muscles, but the effect is more on the hamstrings due to the greater range of motion. Stand straight with your hands on your waist. Now move one leg forward and lower your hips until both your knees are bent at a 90-degree angle. They should not extend beyond your ankle and the knee of the back leg should not touch the floor. To avoid straining the knees, put your weight on your heels while returning to the starting position. Repeat the motion with the other leg. Do two sets of 10 lunges for each leg.
Elliptical workouts
If you hit the gym regularly, spend a little more time on the elliptical machine. Even though it is a cardio exercise, it’s great for toning the thighs. The motion does not put excess pressure on your joints, and you can go on for good 20-30 minutes at a stretch. It is, however, advisable that you consult your physical trainer once and start slow. How Many Calories Should Every One Eat Intraday? table spoon of fructose has calories
Prof.SurinderKochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Health Coach of University of Victoria
A
calorie is a unit that measures energy. Energy helps our body to run smoothly; and without it we cannot survive. In case we eat more calories than we expend, intraday, then it results in increase in weight at a snails’ pace. With weight being on the plus side of normal BMI i.e. more than 25, we become a candidate of overweight and vulnerable to some diseases. As a corollary, we use calories to measure the energy content in numerous food items and beverages we consume. An average woman needs to eat about 2000 calories per day to maintain, and 1500 calories to lose one pound of weight per week; and an average man needs 2500 calories to maintain, and 2000 to lose one pound of weight per week, though the source of the calorie is quintessential. What is a calorie actually? Calories are the physical units for measuring heat and energy. The nutritional energy contained in fat, protein and carbohydrates is expressed in kilocalories (kcal or Cal) and makes up your daily caloric intake. Our bodies need the energy provided by these three macronutrients in order to function properly. All calories are not created equal: Burning more calories each day than we consume may have been the diet advice from the past, for years in succession. However, as per present considered view by many renowned medical Doctors and Scientists it is not correct. They opine that - Instead, the focus should be on eating whole foods and avoiding processed carbohydrates — like crackers, cookies, or white bread- all being made from white flour. Before the 1980s, regulations did
Instead of the number of calories, what matters most is the source of the calories coming from the food we eat. Looking only at calories ignores the metabolic effects of each calorie; the source of the calorie affects how you digest it and how you retrieve energy from it.

not require researchers and physicians to declare conflicts of interest before publishing a paper. By not announcing affiliation, research was swayed by money and funding. The companies that fund the research, influenced the research outcome also. That’s why, experts do not agree to the research outcome in many cases. Does fat and cholesterol a bad dietary choice? A research study funded by the Sugar Research Foundation (SRF) in the 1960s wrongly published that cholesterol and fat were the main contributors to weight gain and responsible for an increased risk for heart disease. Resultantly, manufacturers removed fat from the food items during processing process. With fat removed, food lost taste and appeal, so manufacturers added sugar to make it tasty and look good. In continuation, the country’s intake of sugar and processed carbohydrates went up, while our intake of fat went down. Dr. David Ludwig, MD, PhD Endocrinologist in Pediatrics, a professor in the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, says “Overall, these processed carbohydrates are worse than the fats they replaced.” This is the prime reason that in the last 6 decades we have become addicted to the taste of sugar- a man- made poison. The added sugar consumption increased by 30% between years 19977 to 2010 throughout the world. As per The Journal of the American Medical Association [JAMA] it is found that the doctors involved with the captioned study were in fact paid by the SRF. Their research was tainted due to conflict of interest. The SRF — and thus the doctors paid by the SRF — directly benefited from the results of this 1960s study, and they profited tremendously from the extra sale in sugar sales, while consumers made health decisions on the basis of questionable information and crying all the way to clinics/hospitals. Good vs. bad calories Imagine for a moment if you nourished yourself only with pure sugar. If you didn’t consume more calories in sugar than you expended, your weight would remain the same. What would happen to your body though? First, you’d be suffering from some significant nutrient deficits, and therefore your body would not be able to maintain proper functioning. After all, sucrose doesn’t actually provide you with any valuable nutrients. The effects will be visible in your general health, including
appearance of your skin and the functioning of your immune system. Always remember that food consists of much more than just calories. More importantly, look for the vitamins, minerals and fiber. The test check of a healthy diet is you feel full for 4 hours at least. In case your food intake is loaded with Simple carbohydrates, you will feel hungry after one hour. You can easily check for yourselves, dear folks. Let’s compare the calories in some common foods and soft drinks: Towards good calories, adapt to the principle of ”clean eating” — so give preference to unprocessed foods in the purest forms. This includes things like fruits, vegetables, legumes/beans, nuts, or eggs. You can fill up on these foods without giving much thought to your daily caloric intake limit. Variety amongst these items is key though. The bad calories can be found in highsugar foods or fast food, which follow exactly the opposite principle. They offer you almost no nutrients, but a ton of empty calories. If you’re trying to maintain your weight, you’ll have to pay attention to your “bad” calorie intake. They only make you feel full temporarily, but usually lead to cravings shortly after. You can enjoy a bad calorie from time to time, but keep it to a minimum. The American Heart Association recommends 100 calories or less from sugar each day for women, and 150 calories or less from sugar each day for men. One tablespoon of honey contains 64 calories, which is higher than that of sugar at 49 calories per tablespoon. One
To lose weight, you need to eat fewer calories than your body burns each day. Keep a calorie deficit, otherwise your body will not shed weight as desired. As per Dr. Ludwig leading endocrinologist “It was this calorie-focus approach that got us into trouble with the low-fat diet in the first place.
Calories coming out of: Carbohydrates or Fat It is true that fat has more calories [ 9 calories] than carbohydrates [4 calories], Sugar- including fructose, glucose, and lactose- comes under simple carbohydrates. Starch is in complex carbohydrates. Starch is found in foods such as starchy vegetables, whole grains, rice, and breads and cereals. If we go by that logic, a sugary beverage should be better for you than a handful of nuts. That’s just not what the transparent and unbiased studies – at present-have shown us. Carbohydrates have been categorized as simple or complex in the past. As per Dr. Ludwig, these classifications are misleading. Many doctors are moving away from these narrow categories to the concept of checking the food on the scale: High Glycemic Index and low Glycemic Index. An apple is a simple carbohydrate because it is digested quickly by the body, but fruit is better for you than other simple carbohydrates like chips or crackers. That’s why Dr. Ludwig views the glycemic index as a more accurate measure of a food’s value (good or bad). When something has a low glycemic index, it raises your blood sugar levels slowly, increasing your insulin levels gradually. Please understand that abrupt and continuous release of Insulin – more than required- is the villain that converts the extra intake of glucose into fat and thus increase our weight as this fat is stored in our body. Excess release of Insulin does the damage not calories alone: That’s correct. Because too many insulin spikes result in insulin resistance, where your body stops responding to insulin it is producing (also known as type 2 diabetes). High-glycemic foods, on the other hand, cause blood sugar levels and thus insulin to rise quickly, prompting the overproduction of insulin which result in fat storage. Dr Ludwig recommends that we should focus on low-glycemic foods like whole-grain pasta, wheat bread, fruits, beans, and nuts. High-glycemic foods include dates, potatoes, candy, croissants, and scones et al. By choosing the low-glycemic foods and the minimally processed foods, we the people, can lose more weight, feel fuller longer, and remain healthier. Can you make peace with fat? We need to look at food differently. Counting calories alone doesn’t work because ultimately it matters where those calories are coming from; this matter more than the number of calories ingested. Dr. Ludwig says, “It was this calorie-focus that got us into trouble with the low-fat diet in the first place.” So, don’t be afraid to go back to fat. Just make sure it’s the healthy fats like avocado, olive oil, and nuts. Don’t cut out the fat, and don’t make a habit of eating products labeled “fat free. However, this depends on numerous factors. These include age, height, current weight, activities of daily life [ADL] levels, metabolic health and several others.

How calories affect weight? Calories can affect your weight by increasing it or decreasing it. All considerations aside it can even keep weight at the same level. To lose One pound of weight, one need to burn 3500 calories. So, when we are looking at losing weight we must be sure to burn more calories than we eat. Also, the source of calories matters.
takes up more calories than what they inherently contain. Hence, nullifying the calorie addition. This does not mean that these foods do not contain calories but only the fact that your body ends up burning more calories than what you consume. A win-win situation.
Calorie intake is key The formula is simple: if you consume fewer calories than you burn, you’ll lose weight. In order to burn 1 kg (2.2 lb.) of fat, you need to burn about 7,000 Cal. What if you consume more calories than you burn? The consequence is weight gain. In this case, the ratio of carbs, protein and fat in your daily caloric intake is irrelevant. Those ratios do, however, determine how you feel, or if you’ll be fighting with cravings two hours after mealtime.
Empty calories: Empty calories are the ones, which when consumed generate immense number of calories (main sources being fast food and refined sugar). These contain no nutritional value.
How to Reduce Calorie Intake Without Starving Yourself? In order to gain weight, more calories need to be entering your body than leaving it. Conversely, you lose weight if more calories leave your body than enter it. By cutting calories without taking the foods you eat into account is usually not a sustainable way to lose weight. Though it works for some people, the most end up hungry and eventually give up on their diet. For this reason, it’s highly recommended to make a few other permanent changes to help you maintain a calorie deficit in the long term, without feeling starved. Shift on Negative Calorie foods. Eat Negative Calorie Foods: Certain foods burn more calories during digestion than what they have in them. These are foods high in fibre and have a low glycaemic index [GI]. Apples, carrots, cucumber and lettuce all are negative calorie foods We can have as much of these foods as we like without any weight gain, and that’s because digesting these foods

Calories are classified in two categories: negative calories.
Negative calories: The other, negative calories, come from foods that are nutritious and low on calories. They are great to be added to your diet if you want to lose weight as your body does require bare minimum calories to generate energy and sustain. High fibre foods come under negative calorie foods. High fibre foods fulfil two purposes. Our body takes longer to digest out fibre from the body, hence they stay in the body and delay the early movement of glucose into blood steam and thereby hunger. Rich in nutrition and extremely low on calories, load your plate with the following delicious foods. • Celery: Containing barely 16 calories per 100 grams, celery is ranked high among negative calorie foods. Packed with fibre, celery is also rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, and folate. • Berries: Indulge in these sweet and tangy treats with no guilty. Raspberries, blueberries and strawberries contain just 32 calories per half a cup (as per USDA). Known for their anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants, berries are really good for your heart too. • Grapefruit: Containing about 40 calories per 100 grams, grapefruit is a storehouse of vitamin C, folic acid

and potassium along with soluble fibre pectin. • Carrots: Carrots contain about 41 calories per 100 grams. They are also low in cholesterol and saturated fats which can work wonders if you happen to be struggling with hypertension issues. Along with being a good source of dietary fibre, carrots are also rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K, manganese and potassium • Tomatoes: This fruit contains a minimal of 19 calories per 100 grams. Apart from being a juicy and delicious source of dietary fibre, potassium and vitamin C. it also contains lycopene, an antioxidant known to protect the skin from harmful UV rays. Tomatoes can also prove effective in lowering your cholesterol levels. • Cucumbers 16 calories per 100 grams! Yes, our favourite salad is that low on calories. Cucumbers are full of minerals, vitamins and electrolytes and are extremely hydrating. It is also known as the classic cooling food which helps maintain the body’s water balance in high temperature days. Watermelon: Another summer favourite, watermelons contain 30 calories per 100 grams. Watermelons are also rich in lycopene [which gives it red colour] which can help protect the heart. The citrulline in the rind and the flesh of watermelon can also ensure smooth blood flow and enhanced immunity. Apples: Containing about 50 calories per 100 grams, apple is the fibre-rich snack you must keep in your bag to beat your mid-day hunger pangs. Apples are high in pectin, a type of soluble fibre that encourages weight loss, and releases sugar gradually to help regulate the body’s glucose level. The fibre present in apples also provides relief from constipation. Zucchini Containing as low as 18 calories per 100 grams, zucchini is one of the highly recommended nega-

tive calorie foods by the nutritionists. The phytonutrients in Zucchini also promote bowel regularity and aid water balance in the body. • Broccoli: is plant-based and high in fibre and great calorie burners. Containing barely 34 calories per 100 grams. Broccoli is ranked high amongst superfoods. It is packed with fibres and antioxidants and studies have shown that they may also have certain anticancer properties. Lettuce: Containing only 6 calories per 100 grams, lettuce is not only low in calories but it is also rich in fibre, vitamin B, folic acid, and manganese. In case we load the aforesaid lowcalorie foods in our daily food regime, it can really help, remember that it is equally essential to maintain a balanced diet with all-round nutrition. It’s highly recommended to use a calorie counter for at least a few days [seek Google help], to see how many calories, carbs, protein, fat, fiber, vitamins and minerals you’re actually eating. Conclusion: How many calories you need per day, depends on whether you want to maintain, lose or gain weight, as well as various factors such as your gender, age, height, current weight, work activity levels and metabolic health to quote a few Reducing calories does not have to mean starving yourself. A few simple diet and lifestyle changes like exercise, proper hydration[2000ml] and increased protein and reduced carb intake can help you lose weight and feel satisfied. You can also go to five to two diets a week pattern of eating by consulting your Physician. It is a diet that involves eating normally for five days out of a seven-day period and greatly restricting the amount of food eaten on the other two days. So are you …. … On your mark, get set, go!

Irina Shayk feels mom guilt every day
S
upermodel Irina Shayk, who shares 19-month-old daughter Lea De Seine with Hollywood star Bradley Cooper, says she is hard on herself as a mother and experiences “mom guilt” every day. “I’m the mom who’s always checking in. “I’m really hard on myself,” Shayk told people.com of having mom guilt, which she said she suffers from “every day” just like everybody else. Her way of dealing with it is to recognise that she is not alone. “Everyone has it,” Shayk said, adding: “Time passes so fast. You just have to try to live in the moment.” “I’m not good, but I’m working on it. You just have to let it go and not be hard on yourself.” Shayk, 32, has made motherhood look easy. Cooper and she welcomed

their daughter in March 2017, and just nine weeks after giving birth, the model attended the Cannes Film Festival. Most recently, she and the “A Star Is Born” actor and director, 43, walked their first Met Gala red carpet together in May, where she wore a gold high-slit ruffleembellished gown by Versace. The 32-year-old is not afraid to be open about the fact that her life isn’t always as perfect as it looks. “When I’m not on set, I want to be a regular person because I am a regular person,” Shayk told people. com. “I want to be myself. I don’t want to be judged about not looking together,” she said. “I wear comfortable shoes. I wear sweatpants. I’m also a human being who wakes up and has a thousand things to do.” Courtesy: IANS

Rosamund Pike fought for her role in A Private War
A
ctress Rosamund Pike says she had to fight to get the role of Marie Colvin in “A Private War”. Directed by Matthew Heineman, “A Private War” chronicles the life of Colvin and is based on Marie Brenner’s 2012 Vanity Fair article “Marie Colvin’s Private War”. Colvin died in 2012 while covering the siege of Homs in Syria. When Pike first heard the script through Amma Asante, she instantly fell in love with the story. When she discovered that Heineman was attached to direct it, she pushed for a meeting. “I knew that Matt was a very original storyteller from seeing his docs,” Pike said in a statement to IANS. However, landing for this role wasn’t easy for Pike. “I had a lot of convincing to do,” she said. The actress added: “I don’t look much like Marie. I’m younger than her, I’m not American. There’s a lot going against me. But I really wanted it. She entered my soul somehow when I first read that article. I don’t know why. “I don’t have the desire to serve like she did. I don’t have the courage. But I do understand about having a vocation that takes you suddenly out of your own daily life and then drops you back in. The distortion, or the disjunction between the two, can be troubling.” Heineman wasn’t much convinced with Pike. Hence, after their meeting Heineman and Pike wrote each other essays of who they thought Marie was and found them to be strikingly similar. “I knew right away that I wanted her to
be Marie. Rosamund has that tenacity that Marie had. She fought for that role and she nailed it. She spent so much time researching Marie, understanding Marie, climbing inside of her head, her body, learning how Marie moved, how she held her tension in her neck and shoulder, really down to every single detail,” the director said. Is Canine Parvovirus a Concern?
There are several different viruses that can affect our beloved pets at home. However, the main question that most pet owners experience is, ‘which viruses should I be scared of?’ Do not be scared, instead educate yourself with a few of them that are pertinent in your area and learn how to protect your small family member from them. Throughout the next few articles, we will go over some of the more prevalent viruses or conditions that you may want to keep yourself aware of, as an active pet owner. In the following article, we will discuss the concerns related to Canine Parvovirus and also answer a few common questions that come to mind.
Dr.H.BhullarDVM
C
anine Parvovirus infection is a highly contagious virus, which mainly affects canines in their gastrointestinal system. It can also affect their cardiac system, but this is less common. It can be spread through unvaccinated canines, especially via the fecal-oral route. Commonly affected breeds are: Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, German Shepherds, Dachshunds and Pitbulls. Mainly puppies that are less than 8 months old or adults who are unvaccinated are seen to be at most risk.
52
december 2018
Puppies who are unvaccinated and are less than 7 weeks old, with poor maternal immunity, will prove to be high candidates. Unvaccinated canines are known to be 10x more prone to developing parvoviral enteritis. It has been proved in studies that intact males are noted to be more at risk than intact females.
Common signs associated with Parvovirus are lethargy, anorexia, dehydration, diarrhea & vomiting. Other signs you may also see are abdominal pain, fever, a high heart rate or low body temperature. If you see any of the signs mentioned above, please contact your local veterinarian as soon as possible. How will your veterinarian know that he or she is dealing with a case of Parvovirus? Your veterinarian will diagnose this virus based on your pet’s physical appearance and laboratory tests conducted. Based on blood work, your veterinarian may wish to perform further specific tests, such as: ELISA, fecal flotation or abdominal radiographs. This will help him or her to gain a better understanding of your dog’s health status. My dog has Parvovirus! Can it be treated? Treatment is initiated by controlling immediate problems at hand, such as vomiting, dehydration, blood pressure, electrolyte imbalances or pain. For chronic treatment, your pet may be placed on fluids and isolated from other animals in the clinic to prevent further spread of the virus. The patient may also receive medications to prevent further vomiting and pain. Bloodwork may
also be repeated to monitor progress, until the patient is eating well again. Are there any ways to prevent my dog from contracting this virus? Yes, there are many ways! The best way to prevent your dog from experiencing Parvovirus is by vaccinating your him/her. The vaccine is considered a core vaccination. This means that your veterinarian will highly recommend giving your dog this vaccination as protocol. A modified-live vaccine can be given at: 6 – 8 weeks of age; then 10 – 12 weeks; followed by 14 – 16 weeks; a booster at every 1 year. Do not allow socialization with outside dogs until at least two weeks after the last vaccination. Dogs are known to be immune lifelong if they recover from the virus. However, it is strongly recommended that a solution of diluted bleach (1:32) should be used for disinfecting areas of contact and prevention of viral spread. Please contact your veterinarian if any of the signs described in this article are noted in your pet. Unless your dog has received his complete series of vaccinations, please avoid public gatherings, such as: pet shops, puppy classes, training programs, doggy day cares, parks, kennels, etc. Do not allow your puppy or adult dog to be in contact with fecal waste from other dogs when walking. Avoid any dogs who are known to be infected at all costs. Please ensure your pet’s vaccinations are always up to date, to prevent spread of such contagious diseases.

4 natural make-up removers for sensitive skin
M
ake-up removal is an essential aspect of skincare. And there are few things that are as bad for your skin as sleeping with make-up on. But, using a harsh make-up remover can damage your skin. So, a good option is to choose a natural make-up remover. Here are 4 options: Coconut oil: The natural oil is an allin-one moisturiser, works wonders for the hair and is also an effective makeup remover. Massage your skin with the oil, rinse it with warm water, and wipe off excess oil with a wet cloth. Yoghurt: Yogurt is not just a good probiotic. It can also moisturize the skin and relieve sunburns. For make-
up removal, use cotton dipped in plain yogurt and apply it to your face and later rinse off with cool water. Cucumber: Cucumbers boast of anti-inflammatory properties and can give relief from irritated or acne-prone skin. Make a paste out of a cucumber and use it as a cleanser. You can add milk and olive oil to moisten the mixture, then apply and rinse. Milk: Drinking milk is healthy but applying it to your face or using it to remove your makeup is also a good option. Take a tablespoon of almond oil and add it to a bowlful of milk and apply with a cloth or cotton ball. Cortsey: HT

egardless of what time or season of the year it is, be it summer, autumn, winter, monsoon or whether it is spring, Jackets are pieces of clothing that remain timeless and indispensable to us. They play a huge part in the way we dress, in creating a perfect look. Do you also keep wondering what’s so attractive about jackets that you can’t keep your hands off them? Well not only do they look chic and sophisticated, but they also feel good, comfortable and give you enough space to be confident about yourself and let you carry yourself off in style. We have put together a list of some jackets that we think are absolutely necessary in a woman’s wardrobe, they are given as below:
Maybe it’s the look of a rebellious individual who is not afraid of whatever is thrown at him or perhaps the I don’t care about the world – biker look that it has to it that has had people hooked on to leather jackets for ages. Leather jackets are definitely here to stay and definately for not shorter time span. It is one of those few classic statement piece of clothing that remains immortal with you. The patterned jackets seem to have become more popular now but nothing will come close to the classic black leather jacket. It doesn’t go out of style, and will make your professional, casual and any other kind of outfit more glam.
2. Blazer
A Blazer is a kind of jacket that usually goes well with formal occasions and therefore we find ourselves resisting this almost impossible because you need to have this in your wardrobe as there are just too many formal occasions where you need to look rightly dressed, ready to make an impression! Along with, you can also simply pair up any jeans that you might be wearing with a well fitted blazer that will look gorgeous!
3. Denim
The denim jacket is a kind of a trend that existed before we were born and will most probably after we’re gone. It’s eternal. The

Must Have Jackets For Women In Your Wardrobe

patterns, shades, textures are the kind that not only do they go well with almost any outfit you’re wearing but it’s impossible to find flaws with it. So put on that denim jacket with shorts, jeans, dresses and you’re bound to rock any party that you’ll end up going to! The trench coat is what would be called classic by fashion critics. You can never go wrong with a trench coat and if you want to wear it the right away, it’s better to strut it during the fall, when it’s worn best. A trench coat adds some volume to your outfit by adding on another layer of elegance as you go by. Browns and ochers are the perfect selection of the trench as they are the perfect example of keeping it simple yet fabulous.
4. Rain
Not to mistaken the rain coat for the one that is typically worn during the monsoon, but a version better than that of it, that looks pretty appealing, even while helping to keep the raindrops away. You can get them in whichever sizes and shapes you need and it’s the ability of being protective under good quality and yet being able to be trendy and stand out on its own that’s very attractive and makes it a must have. Jackets also make a great way to hide flabs and still look prim, proper and refined. Jackets are a great way to make an impression. If you too love wearing jackets, make sure you have each of the above mentioned jackets in your wardrobe. Courtesy: BEAUTYGLIMPSE

Autism Spectrum Disorder Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC
A
utism spectrum disorder is a condition related to brain development that impacts how a person perceives and socializes with others, causing problems in social interaction and communication. The disorder also includes limited and repetitive patterns of behavior. The term “spectrum” in autism spectrum disorder refers to the wide range of symptoms and severity. Autism spectrum disorder begins in early childhood seen 1 in 60 Children and eventually causes problems functioning in society — socially, in school and at work, for example. Often children show symptoms of autism within the first year. A small number of children appear to develop normally in the first year, and then go through a period of regression between 18 and 24 months of age when they develop autism symptoms. While there is no cure for autism spectrum disorder, intensive, early treatment can make a big difference in the lives of many children.
Symptoms
pears not to hear you at times 4 Resists cuddling and holding, and seems to prefer playing alone, retreating into his or her own world 4 Has poor eye contact and lacks facial expression 4 Doesn’t speak or has delayed speech, or loses previous ability to say words or sentences 4 Can’t start a conversation or keep one going, or only starts one to make requests or label items 4 Speaks with an abnormal tone or rhythm and may use a singsong voice or robotlike speech 4 Repeats words or phrases verbatim, but doesn’t understand how to use them 4 Doesn’t appear to understand simple questions or directions 4 Doesn’t express emotions or feelings and appears unaware of others’ feelings 4 Doesn’t point at or bring objects to share interest 4 Inappropriately approaches a social interaction by being passive, aggressive or disruptive 4 Has difficulty recognizing nonverbal cues, such as interpreting other people’s facial expressions, body postures or tone of voice
Some children show signs of autism spectrum disorder in early infancy, such as reduced eye contact, lack of response to their name or indifference to caregivers. Other children may develop normally for the first few months or years of life, but then suddenly become withdrawn or aggressive or lose language skills they’ve already acquired. Signs usually are seen by age 2 years. Each child with autism spectrum disorder is likely to have a unique pattern of behavior and level of severity — from low functioning to high functioning. Some children with autism spectrum disorder have difficulty learning, and some have signs of lower than normal intelligence. Other children with the disorder have normal to high intelligence — they learn quickly, yet have trouble communicating and applying what they know in everyday life and adjusting to social situations. Because of the unique mixture of symptoms in each child, severity can sometimes be difficult to determine. It’s generally based on the level of impairments and how they impact the ability to function.
Autism spectrum disorder has no single known cause. Given the complexity of the disorder, and the fact that symptoms and severity vary, there are probably many causes. Both genetics and environment may play a role. 4Genetics. Several different genes appear to be involved in autism spectrum disorder. For some children, autism spectrum disorder can be associated with a genetic disorder, such as Rett syndrome or fragile X syndrome. For other children, genetic changes (mutations) may increase the risk of autism spectrum disorder. Still other genes may affect brain development or the way that brain cells communicate, or they may determine the severity of symptoms. Some genetic mutations seem to be inherited, while others occur spontaneously. Environmental factors. Researchers are currently exploring whether factors such as viral infections, medications or complications during pregnancy, or air pollutants play a role in triggering autism spectrum disorder.
A child or adult with autism spectrum disorder may have problems with social interaction and communication skills, including any of these signs: 4 Fails to respond to his or her name or ap-
autism spectrum disorder is rising. It’s not clear whether this is due to better detection and reporting or a real increase in the number of cases, or both. Autism spectrum disorder affects chil-

dren of all races and nationalities, but certain factors increase a child’s risk. These may include: 4 Your child’s sex. Boys are about four times more likely to develop autism spectrum disorder than girls are. 4 Family history. Families who have one child with autism spectrum disorder have an increased risk of having another child with the disorder. It’s also not uncommon for parents or relatives of a child with autism spectrum disorder to have minor problems with social or communication skills themselves or to engage in certain behaviors typical of the disorder. 4 Other disorders. Children with certain medical conditions have a higher than normal risk of autism spectrum disorder or autism-like symptoms. Examples include fragile X syndrome, an inherited disorder that causes intellectual problems; tuberous sclerosis, a condition in which benign tumors develop in the brain; and Rett syndrome, a genetic condition occurring almost exclusively in girls, which causes slowing of head growth, intellectual disability and loss of purposeful hand use. 4 Extremely preterm babies. Babies born before 26 weeks of gestation may have a greater risk of autism spectrum disorder. 4 Parents’ ages. There may be a connection between children born to older parents and autism spectrum disorder, but more research is necessary to establish this link
ment. The goal of treatment is to maximize your child’s ability to function by reducing autism spectrum disorder symptoms and supporting development and learning. Early intervention during the preschool years can help your child learn critical social, communication, functional and behavioral skills. The range of home-based and schoolbased treatments and interventions for autism spectrum disorder can be overwhelming, and your child’s Neeru ds may change over time. Your health care provider can recommend options and help identify resources in your area. If your child is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, talk to experts about creating a treatment strategy and build a team of professionals to meet your child’s needs.
Treatment options may include:
Your child’s doctor will look for signs of developmental delays at regular checkups. If your child shows any symptoms of autism spectrum disorder, you’ll likely be referred to a specialist who treats children with autism spectrum disorder, such as a child psychiatrist or psychologist, pediatric neurologist, or developmental pediatrician, for an evaluation. In British Columbia we have a Diagnostic Team at Sunny Hill Health Centre Vancouver, However the wait time is over 9 months. Local Speech & Language Program helps , Child Development Centre Helps. 4 Private assessment cost few thousand dollars 4 A thorough History & Physical Examination is Necessary 4 We do Blood test to Check Blood Count , Thyroid Function , Iron Level & Chromosomes 4 Vision & Hearing Screen also to be done
Behavior and communication therapies. Many programs address the range of social, language and behavioral difficulties associated with autism spectrum disorder. Some programs focus on reducing problem behaviors and teaching new skills. Other programs focus on teaching children how to act in social situations or communicate better with others. Applied behavior analysis (ABA) can help children learn new skills and generalize these skills to multiple situations through a reward-based motivation system. 4Educational therapies. Children with autism spectrum disorder often respond well to highly structured educational programs. Successful programs typically include a team of specialists and a variety of activities to improve social skills, communication and behavior. Preschool children who receive intensive, individualized behavioral interventions often show good progress. 4Family therapies. Parents and other family members can learn how to play and interact with their children in ways that promote social interaction skills, manage problem behaviors, and teach daily living skills and communication. Other therapies. Depending on your child’s needs, speech therapy to improve communication skills, occupational therapy to teach activities of daily living, and physical therapy to improve movement and balance may be beneficial. A psychologist can recommend ways to address problem behavior. 4Medications. No medication can improve the core signs of autism spectrum disorder, but specific medications can help control symptoms. For example, certain medications may be prescribed if your child is hyperactive; antipsychotic drugs are sometimes used to treat severe behavioral problems; and antidepressants may be prescribed for anxiety. Keep all health care providers updated on any medications or supplements your child is taking. Some medications and supplements can interact, causing dangerous side effects.
No cure exists for autism spectrum disorder, and there is no one-size-fits-all treat-

4500g pack sweet shortcrust pastry 41 tsp cinnamon 4or a grating of nutmeg (optional) 4300g jam 4icing sugar, for dusting Method 4 Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and put a baking tray in the oven to heat up. On a lightly floured surface, roll out two-thirds of the pastry to a circle about 0.5cm thick. If you’re adding a spiced flavour to your pastry, sprinkle with the cinnamon or nutmeg, fold in half and repeat, then roll it out again to a circle about 0.5cm thick. 4 Press the pastry into a 23cm metal pie tin or tart tin and trim off any excess pastry hanging over the edge. If you’re using a deep tin, roll the edges down a little to make a lip (you only want to make a shallow tart). Spread the jam over the pastry base.
4 On a lightly floured surface, roll out the remaining pastry to a thickness of 0.5cm and use small cookie cutters to stamp out shapes. Re-roll the trimmings and cut out more shapes if needed. Arrange the pastry decorations over the jam layer. 4 Put the tin on the hot baking tray and cook for 40 mins, then leave to cool for 15 mins. Dust the pastry toppings with icing sugar. Serve warm or cold with custard, cream or ice cream.
PREP: 45 MINS COOK: 30 MINS Ingredients 4Zest 1 orange, plus juice ½ 44 tbsp Cointreau 485g dried cranberries 485g mixed dried fruit 4550g strong white bread flour, plus extra for 4kneading 42 x 7g sachets easy-bake dried yeast 485g golden caster sugar 4Good grating of nutmeg 485g butter, plus extra for the tin 41 large egg 4250ml warm milk 4Sunflower oil, for the bowl 425g pistachios, chopped 4300g golden marzipan To decorate 4 Stir together the zest and juice, Cointreau, cranberries and mixed fruit in a small bowl and leave to soak. 4 Meanwhile, mix the flour, yeast, caster sugar and nutmeg in a large bowl. Add ½ tsp salt and rub in the butter. Beat the egg with the warm milk, then pour onto the flour mix. Stir with a round-bladed knife, then use your hands to bring the mixture together as a soft dough. 4 Tip onto a work surface and knead for a couple of mins, adding a little flour only if you need to stop it sticking. Oil the bowl, return the dough and cover with cling film. Leave to rise for 45 mins-1 hr in a warm place until doubled in size. 4 Line and butter a large roasting tin with baking parchment. Roll the risen dough out firmly to a long strip about 70 x 18cm. Add the pistachios to the soaked fruit, then scatter the mix along the dough. Roll the marzipan into a sausage the same length as the longest side of the dough, then place it down the centre of the dough and roll up together firmly, a bit like making a sausage roll. Trim the ends, then cut the rest into even lengths and arrange, cut side up, in the tin. Cover with cling film and leave to rise for 45 mins-1 hr until really well risen. 4 Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Bake for 15-20 mins until golden. Will freeze for up to 6 weeks. Brush with melted butter and dredge with icing sugar, or mix a little water into the icing sugar, drizzle over the buns and scatter over the nuts. Eat within 2 days.

Of 8th Annual Vancouver International South Asian Film Festival 2018
S
urrey, BC, Nov 27, 2018 The 2018 Vancouver South Asian Film Festival wrapped up on Sunday night after 4 days of successful screenings and events. The festival kicked off with the North American premiere of the award-winning-film, Mehsampur and closed with two feature presentations; Nandita Das’ biopic Manto [Closing Day], and Sikh Musical Heritage; The Untold Story [Closing Gala] In attendance at the festival were special guests Kabir Chowdhry (Director Mehsampur), Sapna Bhavnani (Creative Producer, Mehsampur), Danish Renzu (Director Half Widow), Jasbir Kaur Rababan (Producer, Sikh Musical Heritage; The Untold Story), Azadvir Singh, (Producer, Sikh Musical Heritage; The Untold Story) VISAFF provides a platform to share and promote South Asian stories, culture, and perspectives that go unrepresented by mainstream cinema or Bollywood film. Which is why this year the festival was especially excited to host 40 plus films. The films
were enjoyed Beyond the films, VISAFF includes a whole host of workshops ranging in topics from acting, production, and casting. A highlight of the festival was the Outstanding Speakers Panel that featured film and television industry speakers who shared their experience and expertise and was followed by a Q&A. “Ultimately, we can only do 10% of the work. The other 90% is all about audience engagement. Festivals, especially this one, are not possible without our patrons.” - VISAFF Producer, Mannu Sandhu
