Daljit Thind announced 7 units for the refugees from Syria. D

aljit Thind has capsized the phrase “build it and they will come.” By transforming his humble beginnings into a path of developing custom homes, townhomes, condominiums, he has now pledged seven units in one of his buildings on Kingsway in Vancouver for asylum-seekers and refugees from Syria. Daljit is the first Indo-Canadian well known developer in the South Asian Community who has taken such a commendable initiative. He is proven himself as one of the outstanding philanthropist in the South Asian community. “I just wanted to help these people. They come with their kids and the kids are so young,” he said. “I thought, they will really need help,” he added.

Up to 3,000 refugees fleeing the Syrian civil war are expected in B.C. by the end of the year as the new Liberal government fulfills an election promise to bring 25,000 asylum-seekers into Canada. Being an immigrant himself, Thind said he understands how tough it will be for the new arrivals to get a fresh start in Canada. In the 20 years since he left India, he’s managed to work his way up from construction worker to become one of the most successful businessmen in the Punjabi community, and he wants Syrian refugees to have the opportunity to accomplish something similar. “Helping out mankind, that’s in our culture,” Thind said. Daljit Thind is just the latest Vancouver developer to offer up space for the arrivals from Syria. Earlier last month, Ian Gillespie pledged 12 units in a West End apartment building, and the Urban Development Institute urged its members to follow suit.

anada and the United States share one of the most unique and prosperous relationships in the world. Our supply chains are so deeply intertwined that we literally build things together. While Canada must continue to diversify its international trade, it must also work to strengthen its relationship with its largest trading partner. To reinforce its relationship with the United States, the Surrey Board of Trade’s policy focuses on the following key areas: working together on energy

security and the environment; ensuring our shared border is efficient and open to legitimate trade and travel; removing unnecessary regulatory differences and enhancing our trade relationship. There were many opportunities for collaboration and a diverse industry base that attended this roundtable. We have $700 Billion dollars a year that moves across the U.S/Canada border. The final details of how the Trans-Pacific Partnership will enhance Canada and U.S. trade are also being watched closely.

SRK-Kajol to Deepika-Ranbir: Bollywood hit jodis back onscreen

T

he magical chemistry between Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in films like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) is remembered even today. So much so that there’s already a lot of buzz around Rohit Shetty’s Dilwale which marks the comeback of the popular on-screen pair after almost five years. Interestingly, apart from SRK and Kajol, various other successful on-screen pairs are set to make a comeback on the big screen. Back again Also, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone will be seen in director Imtiaz Ali’s Tamasha , while Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar, who last featured in Dum Laga Ke Haisha (DLKH), will team up in Aanand L Rai’s next production, Manmarziyan. “I was impressed with the

fearlessness with which Bhumi took on her role in DLKH. Ayushmann seems like a dedicated actor, who is not in a rush to achieve everything quickly. I love such artistes who have patience and control. The script of my next requires such actors. I am happy to work with both of them,” says Aanand. The coming months will also see the Student Of The Year (2012) pair, Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt, reunite for film-maker Karan Johar’s Kapoor And Sons. And Ranveer Singh will team up with Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani (while Gunday was Ranveer’s last with Priyanka, Bhansali’s Ramleela was his previous stint opposite Deepika). Hit formula When asked if the tried-andtested formula of pairs, who have had a successful chemistry in the past

works with the audience, exhibitordistributor Akshaye Rathi says, “Yes, it’s always fantastic to play to the success formula, especially when a pair has had successful outings. The recall value is

superb. For instance, people still feel excited to see SRK and Kajol together.” Apart from clicking with the audience, even actors feel that their chemistry — on and off screen — comes in handy.

Juhi Chawla, Nawazuddin Siddiqui to get Indira Gandhi Award 2015

All India Congress Committee general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi, who both worked with late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for many years, shall be the chief guests and felicitate all the awardees,” Nirupam said. HYPOTHYROIDISM

H

Initially, babies born without a thyroid gland or with a gland that doesn’t work properly may have few signs and symptoms. When newborns do have problems with hypothyroidism, they may include: • Yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice). In most cases, this occurs when a baby’s liver can’t metabolize a substance called bilirubin, which normally forms when the body recycles old or damaged red blood cells.

Symptoms

• • • •

Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji

ypothyroidism is a medical condition in which our thyroid gland does not produce enough of the hormone Thyroxin that is essential to vitality of each & every cell of our body. Seldom causes symptoms in the early stages, but, over time, untreated hypothyroidism can cause a number of health problems, such as obesity, joint pain, infertility and heart disease.

They may vary from patient to patient, the symptoms are very subtle initially and over period of time it will become more Evident. At first, one may barely notice the symptoms of hypothyroidism, such as fatigue and weight gain, or you may simply attribute them to getting older. But as your metabolism continues to slow, you may develop more obvious signs and symptoms. Hypothyroidism signs and symptom may include: • Fatigue • Increased sensitivity to cold • Constipation • Dry skin • Unexplained weight gain • Puffy face • Hoarseness • Muscle weakness

• • • • • • • •

Elevated blood cholesterol level Muscle aches, tenderness and stiffness Pain, stiffness or swelling in your joints Heavier than normal or irregular menstrual periods Thinning hair Slowed heart rate Depression Impaired

Hypothyroidism in Newborn Babies In Canada we have Universal Screening at birth to rule out Hypothyroidism. A simple Blood test done a day after birth is done from the Baby’s Heel Poke. The Lab Tech takes it on a Blotting Paper; It is then processed in the Lab.

• • • •

Frequent choking. A large, protruding tongue. A puffy appearance to the face. As the disease progresses, infants are likely to have trouble feeding and may fail to grow and develop normally. They may also have: Constipation Poor muscle tone Excessive sleepiness When hypothyroidism in infants isn’t treated, even mild cases can lead to severe physical and mental retardation.

Hypothyroidism in Children & Teens In general, children and teens who develop hypothyroidism have the same signs and symptoms as adults do, but they may also experience: Poor growth, resulting in short stature Delayed development of permanent teeth Delayed puberty Poor mental development.. outh Asian radio station CKYE 93.1 RED FM in partnership with Surrey Memorial Foundation raised over $820,000 in just 16 hours through an annual fundraiser radiothon. Funds raised will be donated to Surrey Memorial Hospital’s Kidney Centre, which will be named Dukh Bhanjan. The funds will help expand the dialysis unit. RED FM’s president Kulwinder Sanghera thanked the community for their outstanding support. “In the past nine years that we have been organizing radiothon, every year we receive exceptionally good response from the community. “Whether it is for a local cause or for an international tragedy, South Asian community never stops helping,” Sanghera adds. Thousands of people called in to make their pledges and hundreds walked in to RED FM studio to donate money. The fundraiser radiothon started at 6 am and was wrapped up by 10 pm. “The power and generosity of the South Asian community to donate money towards improving health care for all, is extremely inspiring,” says Jane Adams, CEO, Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation. RED FM has been organizing radiothon since 2007 and over $6 million has been raised in the past nine years. Besides raising funds for local hospitals like Surrey Memorial and Peace Arch, RED FM has also raised money for natural disasters outside Canada such as earthquake in Haiti, floods in Pakistan, typhoon in Philippines, earthquake in Nepal.

Be on top of the trends this year with top 3 jewelry designs

K

eeping in mind that jewelry is highly personal to your own style — if you love something, wear it as often as you like for as long as you like — there is a trend component to jewelry. Like apparel, some designs are hotter than others this year. Here’s what to look for in the upcoming months and seasons:

1. Single or mismatched earrings Despite what many of us never even thought to question, there’s

absolutely no reason your ear jewelry has to be symmetrical. Different colors, designs or numbers of earrings — it’s up to you. 4 Put a twist on classic pearl studs — one black and one white for high contrast or blue and peacock for a interesting and subtle “are they different?” take. 4 Wear a single earring. Own the look and no one will ask if you’ve lost the other one. 4 Mix a simple earring on one ear with an ear climber or threader earring on the other. 4 Match patterns and designs but wear different colors of gold or gemstones. 2. Brass jewelry Not always thought of as a modern jewelry metal, brass is making a comeback. It complements natural bohemian looks on women and its heft makes it suitable for men’s jewelry. Some things to know: 4 It’s an alloy of copper and zinc, so it is a safe metal for the growing number of people with nickel sensitivity.

4 Depending on the mix of copper and zinc, you could get a “green skin” reaction if copper is the prevailing alloy. 4 It may oxidize (change color when exposed to air). Some brass jewelry is lacquered to prevent this. Make sure you know if it’s been lacquered or not and how to care for it. 3. Earthy bohemian jewelry These designs are intricate and may mix metal colors, different gems or natural motifs like leaves and feathers. Leather necklaces and

bracelets and wearing multiple rings on multiple fingers also play into a boho vibe. 4 Earring styles to look for are large diameter hoops — plain or embellished with gems — and feathery or fringy dangles 4 An armful of bangles gives a gypsy feel. 4 Materials to look for are yellow gold and gemstones such as turquoise, opal, moonstone and simulated coral. 4 Play with finishes on your metal jewelry — mix shiny and matte.

Acrylic Poncho: The latest winter fad of 2015

I

t’s often the most likely of trend you end up liking and wearing the most – and for us this season, that trend is definitely the poncho. They first cropped up about 10 years ago – high neck and heavily fringed – but their resurgence can be largely thanked to a stylish makeover. The current poncho incarnation has much more of a cape feel to it and has

been a quick hit with the street style set. From Burberry’s luxury colour block check monogrammed blanket poncho, to more aztec or graphic designs, the poncho is certainly proving to be the cover up of choice for the season. Inspired by the traditional South American poncho, the almost blanket like piece features rich colours,

luxurious fabrics and is a key piece in this season’s play with layering and proportion. The trick to styling these types of ponchos is to modernise the rest of your outfit with plain neutrals or even pastels to add a little colour. The glamorous poncho evokes the feel of the cape, but easier to wear both formally and casually. Rich colours, fabrics and interesting graphic designs take the piece up a notch, and look beautiful paired with a streamlined bottom – think shorts and a lot of leg, or slim trousers and elegant heels. A great way to add

bursts of colour to an otherwise plain outfit, we also love the slightly preppy feel with oversized plaid in bright colours. Winter season brings in vogue the warm outfits, i.e. caps, cardigans, sweaters, hats, scarves, gloves, and trendy ponchos. Cozy and warm fashion details get into fashion in cool winter days. Among the trendiest western winter wears, a poncho is the hottest and also the trendiest winter wear for women especially. Do not miss to buy yours before the winter season is gone!

Kundalini Yoga

A way to experience the divine Kundalini yoga is a school of yoga focused on awakening the dormant Kundalini power in the body. The Kundalini energy can be described as a powerful form of ‘Chi’ or ‘life energy’ in the form of a ‘sleeping serpent’ that upon being awakened leads to a deep feeling of enlightenment and bliss. Dr. Soorya Kaur, a Delhi-based yoga practitioner, nutritional expert and follower of the Yogi Bhajan School on Kundalini Yoga says, “Kundalini in its basic definition is yoga of awareness. It is concerned with inculcating in its practitioners various breathing postures that serves to increase and better the lung capacity while strengthening the nervous system and making it adept at receiving the flow of energy which is generated when the practitioner is engaged in meditation.” The human body is composed of many systems but it is the nervous system which makes the body and core components perform optimally. It serves as the primary mode of understanding impulses and emotions that one experiences. If Kundalini is the life energy present in the body then Chakra points are the containers present in the body to sustain and act as a channel for the energy that travels from the base of the spine up till the crown of the head. Kundalini Yoga taps the dormant power in this system by awakening the Chakra Points that serve to increase awareness, blissfulness and understanding of the human body in its entirety both spiritually and physically. The Chakra Points in Kundalini are traditionally understood to be seven in number, depicted in increasing order below: • Muladhara or Root Chakra located at the end of the spinal column. It deals with survival and is blocked by fear. • Svadishthana or Sacral Chakra located at the tail bone or the pubic bone. It deals with pleasure and is blocked with guilt. • Manipura or Fire Chakra located just below the rib cage. It deals with willpower and is blocked by shame. • Anahata or Heart Chakra located

in the centre of the chest close to the heart. It deals with love and is blocked by grief. • Vishuddha or Sound Chakra located at the throat region near the spine. It deals with truth and is blocked by lies. • Ajna or Light Chakra located directly behind the centre of the forehead. It deals with insight and is blocked by illusion. • Sahasrara or Crown Chakra located slightly above the top of the head. It deals with cosmic energy and is blocked by earthly attachment. In order to practice this form of yoga one needs the guidance of a guru as Dr Kaur believes, “A guru is especially important while understanding the intricacies of Kundalini yoga. Books, superficial explanations and online tutorials are not at all advisable for this branch of yoga as it requires a more personal interaction between a guru and his/her disciple.” But before practicing Kundalini Yoga, one needs to be away from smoking and drugs since they are an obstacle to the natural flow of energy. Exercise in the form of asanas is also beneficial to prepare the body to receive the flow of energy particularly padmasana or the lotus position, the vajrasana or diamond position amongst others that stimulate and strengthen the nervous system. Moreover Kundalini Yoga can be practiced by anyone with a deep resolve and focus, to reap the benefits of the natural energy that flows in the body. “Kundalini yoga can be practiced by three to five year old kids as well under proper guidance though the lessons would be introductory in the initial stages with more intricate lessons as the time progresses,” mentions Dr Kaur. Kundalini yoga doesn’t turn oneself into a superhuman, as one might believe, but as one naturally is programmed to be. But at the same time it involves disenchanted and maintaining a balance within oneself, which is an art to master.

3 ways to get great Santa photos

A

yearly photo of your kids with the man in the red suit is not only a special Christmas tradition, it’s also a snapshot of your little darlings in time - their first Christmas, the toddler stage, the year they first started school etc - and these are the photos you’ll treasure forever. Here’s 3 tips to get that perfect Santa photo – instead of one of your screaming child sitting on some stranger’s lap! Great Santa photo tip 1: Arrive early Avoid lengthy Santa photo queues by arriving at the photo stand first thing in the morning when it opens. Not only will the line be short and your child less likely to ‘loose it’ while waiting, but chances are Santa will also be brighter (and smile-ier) first thing - rather than at the end of the day when all he wants to do is get that damn hot red suit off and drink a nice cold beer! Also, if you want to beat the queues, you need to beat the Christmas shopping rush. Get your kids’ photo with Santa done early - even before the shopping mall has decorated its Christmas trees if possible. Great Santa photo tip 2: Find a ‘good’ Santa Claus A good Santa not only has warm

and sparkly eyes, he’ll also talk to your child, and if your little one isn’t in the mood for having his picture taken, a good Santa will be happy to let him come back when he’s feeling happier. A good Santa also has good elves who won’t pressure mums into buying dodgy pictures and will give you time to view all the images and make sure you’re happy with those you’ve chosen - and the price. To find a good Santa you’ll need to ask around. Ask other mums in your mothers’ group, at the kindy/school gate and go to the shopping centre where he’ll be - even if it’s not your local one. The nice photo will be worth the effort.

Great Santa photo tip 3: Break the ice If your kids are apprehensive about sitting on Santa’s knee, walk around Santa’s workshop a few times and let them watch other kids getting their photo taken with the fat man. Also, introduce your kids to Father Christmas before they have their photo taken. You might want to break the ice by initiating a conversation between your child and Santa by asking your child to tell Santa what foods she’s going to leave out on December 24 for him. After a friendly chit-chat she’ll be much more likley to want to sit on his knee.

Benefits of Selling Your Home During the Holiday Season Rahul Gill

A

lthough traditionally spring and fall are the prime seasons for selling a home, circumstances sometimes require homeowners to put their property on the market during the winter. The good news is that, given access to mobile apps and so much information online, selling in mid-winter may not be so tough. The supply of homes for sale (your competition) is light, and buyers are still looking. If you have to list your home during the winter, you’ll get a pass on landscaping and some curb appeal issues. But there are some important points to consider when listing your home during the cold months. With winter approaching it is not uncommon for those of us in the real estate industry to meet sellers who say, “I’m going to wait until spring to sell.” Spring is the busy time of year in real estate. That being said, spring is not necessarily the best time to sell a house. Here are some benefits of why winter might just be the best time to sell your home. 1. Serious Buyers - Homebuyers in autumn are often hoping to be in their new house or condo before the holidays, so they tend to be more motivated to make offers and negotiate quickly. It gets dark out by 4 o’clock in the afternoon and it’s frigid cold.

Buyers that are out looking at homes this time of year are serious buyers. They have narrowed down their search so that they can avoid wasting any time out in the cold. Sellers that list their home now may have less showings than spring months, but every buyer through the door is potentially the buyer for the home. 2. Holiday Decorations - Homes that are warmly decorated for the holidays enable the potential buyers to picture themselves living there. They see themselves enjoying hot chocolate by the hearth that is strung with pine. They picture themselves decorating their own tree and enjoying family holiday dinners in the over-sized kitchen. Holiday decorations create warm emotions for most buyers and emotions often equate to love – you want that buyer to fall in love with your home. 3. Emotions - If you decorate just right when staging your home for sale, you can capitalize on buyers emotions for their own holiday traditions. The key is to lean heavily on warm, festive décor, and stay away from religious and cultural undertones. In this way, you can use the holiday season to appeal to a broad variety of buyers without alienating any particular groups. For instance most Canadians celebrate, or at least appreciate, Thanksgiving. Everyone

nearly feels warmed by fall colors, a display of harvest vegetables and the scent of spiced cider. For winter holidays, a tasteful wreath on the door and some simple, understated strings of plain white lights can exponentially increase your home’s

curb appeal. 4. Competition - There is less home sale competition in the winter. Less competition means you have greater access to the pool of potential buyers. Fewer people are selling homes at this time of year than during other months. When fewer homes are on the market, that’s usually good news for sellers. When inventory is down, your home can show more frequently—and more showings often mean a faster sale. Why sell a home when everyone else is? If you are looking to gain maximum value for your home, the easiest way to do that is to sell when there is very little competition. 5. Close Faster - Selling a home in the winter is a faster process than selling a home in the spring. In the spring, mortgage companies are inundated with mortgage applications. Everyone and their brother starts the home

buying process in the spring which means it typically takes longer to close. A winter buyer can usually close in 30 days, which is practically impossible in the spring. 6. Non-Contingent Buyer - Let’s say that you are planning on buying another house, but not right now. You could sell your house now and move into a temporary housing until spring. This gives you huge leverage when you go to buy a house in the spring because you will not have to make offers that are “subject to selling a house.” In the spring, the market gets competitive so buyers who have to sell a house are pushed to the low end of the totem pole when there is bidding war. If you don’t have a house to sell, you will have an easier time buying your next house. If you’re thinking about selling your home during the holidays this year, we can help. Our innovative marketing strategies help get your home in front of the right buyers at the right times, and we’d love to help you sell your home quickly and at the right price. As always, you want to use an experienced real estate team to sell your home. They will know how to negotiate the price for you and get you the right home in timely manner! DID YOU KNOW?

@saet.ca

When Christmas is Celebrated A

lthough December 25th is the date when most people celebrate Christmas, there are some other dates as well! Some churches (mainly Orthodox churches) use a different calendar for their religious celebrations. Orthodox Churches in Russia, Serbia, Jerusalem, Ukraine, Ethiopia and other countries use the old ‘Julian’ calendar and people in those churches celebrate Christmas on January 7th. Most people in the Greek Orthodox Church celebrate Christmas on December 25th. But some still use the Julian calendar and so celebrate Christmas on 7th January! Some Greek Catholics also celebrate on January 7th. In Armenia, the Apostolic Church celebrates Christmas on January 6th. It also celebrates ‘Epiphany’ on this day.

Advent - The Time Before Christmas Before Christmas, many Christians use the time of Advent to prepare themselves and get ready to celebrate the joy of Christmas, when Christians celebrate of the birth of Jesus, who they believe is the Son of God. Advent is normally a period of four Sundays and weeks before Christmas. In many Orthodox and Eastern Catholics Churches Advent lasts for 40 days, starting on November 15th. In Orthodox Churches which celebrate Christmas on 7th January, Advent start on 28th November! During Advent many people fast (don’t eat certain foods). The types of food people give up depends on their church tradition and where in the world they live.

After Christmas - The 12 Days of Christmas and Epiphany After Advent, traditionally, Christmas celebrations (and often a feast!) started on Christmas Day and lasted for 12 Days - so they were known as The 12 Days of Christmas! The celebrations finished on the evening of 5th January, which is better known as Twelfth Night. Throughout history, the 12 Days of Christmas were a time of feasting and fun. Following Twelfth Night, on 6th January, is Epiphany, when people remember the Wise Men (also sometimes called the Three Kings) who visited Jesus and/or the Baptism of Jesus. Epiphany/Twelfth Night is also the time when it was traditional to take your Christmas decorations down - although some people leave them up until Candlemas.

Candlemas - The End of Christmas

You might think that Christmas ends when you take the Christmas Decorations down - but it doesn’t! After both Christmas and the season of Epiphany, the end of the Christmas celebrations comes on February 2nd, 40 days after Christmas, with Candlemas. Candlemas, also known as the ‘Presentation of Jesus at the Temple’ or the ‘Feast of the Purification of the Virgin (or Mary)’ is the when some Christians remember the time when Mary and Joseph took the baby Jesus to the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem to give thanks to God for giving them a son. It’s a very important day in some Orthodox and Catholic churches. The name Candlemas comes from ‘Candle Mass’ because in many Candlemas services, the candles are blessed to be used in churches during the coming year or are given out to people for them to use in their homes and private prayers. In many Catholic churches, it’s a time when people remember and renew promises they’ve made to the church and celebrate some of the prophecies, which were given about Jesus. In many Eastern/Orthodox churches, an all night vigil is held on the night before the candle blessing ceremony. In the morning, the candles are blessed and are given out to people.

Many people think Christmas is on December the 25th and that’s all there is to Christmas. However, for many people around the world, in different countries and in different Christian traditions, Christmas lasts for a lot longer than that - and it’s even celebrated at different times!

The easiest egg salad recipe in the world! If you ever come home late, and find only eggs and mayo in your fridge; worry not. That much is enough to rustle up a delicious and filling egg salad. These recipes are so popular with bachelors that in youth hostels around the world, one will often come across such helpful messages stuck on the fridge by other young people. So here’s how you do that... What you have? Half a dozen eggs A jarful of mayonnaise A jar of mustard sauce How you do it? • Take around six eggs and boil them for around 10 minutes on a medium flame. • Turn the flame off and let them sit for another five minutes. • Pour some cold water on them so you don’t get burnt when you peel them. • Peel off the eggs and check if they’re cool enough. • Mash the eggs with your hands or a ladle. • Pour half a cup mayonnaise and 1 tablespoon mustard. • Mix it all properly together. • Add salt and pepper to taste. • If you want, let the salad sit for a while in the fridge, while you grab a beer Or freshen up. • A few minutes in the fridge will help the flavours mix together well. • Garinsh with coriander if you like. You can eat the egg salad with bread or even plain. Whichever way you eat it, it’s just as yum!

Too lazy to cook? Try these one pot dishes! A few dishes that save time and trouble both, no slaving over a hot stove anymore! Here are a few dishes that are not just quick and easy but high on taste, flavour and nutrition too. And the great thing about these onepot dishes is that all the ingredients are according to taste, so - no measurements! Sausage hot pot: Everybody loves sausages! And they are handy and can be kept in the deep freezer for when emergency (read: laziness) strikes. If not feeling upto cooking, one can simply boil a pot of chicken or vegetable stock, add seasoning an chopped veggies like tomatoes, onions, potatoes, pumpkins and even the ones we don’t like to eat, like bottle gourd (they don’t lend much to the taste but give the stew good consistency). Now the best part is, that stews don’t require the sausages to thaw you can simply take them out of the freezer and put them in the boiling concoction of pure goodness! Of course, it helps if they are allowed to sit for a while, but if you’refeeling too lazy or have no time, simply dunk the frozen franks in and watch the magic happen as they become soft and juicy.

Dill and lentils: People who have a hard time trying to eat spinach or feed them to their children, this is a great way to do so! Fragrant, flavourful dill combined with split yellow gram makes not only a nutritious pot dish but is great as comfort food too. Just heat a little ghee in a nonstick skillet and saute some gingergarlic paste and some finely chopped green chillies for some minutes. Add washed and soaked yellow gram and finely chopped dill and saute again for some time. Add some water, season with some salt, lower the heat, and cook covered its less watery. Serve hot and enjoy! Cauliflower and cheese: Okay, so this isn’t exactly a one pot dish, but its still simple. Everyone loves bechamel sauce, so why not put some of that love to good use! Cut the cauliflower florets into tiny pieces and pan fry them till they are golden brown and slightly crispy. Make your cheese sauce and add enough crisp cauliflower to cover the sauce. A favourite with kids adults alike! Once you master this, try experimenting with different veggies like crisped carrots or french beans also!

Age-wise facial guide Here are some things you should know before opting for a facial or a facial routine The sun, dirt, grime, pollution, stress - they’re all taking a toll on your skin. You may not immediately realise it, but over time it shows. Dehydration due to sun causes fine lines and pigmentation. You could also face breakouts and suffer from blackheads. Hence, it’s essential to follow a facial routine that’s right for you. Happy 20s At 20, most men and women are just starting to get rid of teenage acne and working towards clearer skin. A monthly visit to the spa for a clean up can help delay the ageing process. Go for something herbal and light that provides a moisturising treatment to balance the skin. Ingredients like fresh ginger, turmeric, mint leaves along with tangerine, cucumber and honey can help. A fruit moisturiser treatment can also be beneficial and will exfoliate, moisturise and soften the skin. Ensure that you use all organic and natural products. Trying 30s

www.slanow.com

This is the age when your skin starts to change. A facial should rebalance the hydration, balance the sebum and moisturise and improve your complexion. Opt for a facial that includes a gentle massage which will relieve tension. An exfoliating substance will help clear out dead skin cells and should be finished off with a hydrating mask. Essential 40s Those with mature skin, aged 40 and above, should be careful of what they use. Cleanse your skin thoroughly and then use a light fruit based gel or cream. Steam can be harmful for older skin. Instead, use a face pack of cold milk, cucumber juices, papaya or even mashed banana according to your skin type. Handy tips No matter your age, there are certain ingredients that can work wonders. A light skin polishing that uniformly clears dead skin cells is recommended. Try out a de-stressing aloe vera facial massage that removes impurities and rejuvenates the skin. Always go for fresh fruit, rose, marigold and jasmine based masks that add a radiant glow to the skin.

Getting to know your Orthodontist Dr. Vishal Sharma,

BSc, DDS, Cert. Ortho. FRCD(C), FCDS (BC) Certified

W

Specialist in Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics

hat is an Orthodontist? What kind of training do they have? Is it necessary to see an Orthodontist? How do I see an Orthodontist? These may be some of the questions you are asking yourself after reading the title to this article. When I started my training program to become an Orthodontist, I thought most people were aware of what we did and how we did it. However, since I graduated I have realized that this is not the case. Hopefully, I can help clear things up by helping you get to know your Orthodontist and help you appreciate the valuable role that they can play in your family’s health. What is an Orthodontist? First, a simple definition: the word ‘orthodontist’ has its origin in the Greek language - when translated literally it means ‘tooth straightener’. That’s exactly what we do – straighten teeth. Of course, it’s a lot more complicated than that and I’ll be sure to explain throughout this article. What kind of training do they have? For now, let’s take a look at how one becomes an Orthodontist. Here is a description of the process: Complete High School ↓ Complete Bachelors at University (4 years) ↓ Complete Doctorate at Dental school (4 years) ↓ Complete Specialist training after dental

school (3 years) ↓ Complete all examinations to become a Certified Specialist in Orthodontics This means that after grade 12, the process takes 11 years. Learning in a specialist training program is different from most schooling becauseit is largely clinically based. This means that most of the learning comes from treating patients and gaining experience. The remainder of the learning comes from the classroom, studying for exams, giving presentations, attending seminars, and doing research. Ok, so there’s a lot of school! The important thing to remember is that a Certified Orthodontist is a specialist specifically trained to straighten teeth. Is it necessary to see an Orthodontist? In orthodontic terms, ‘malocclusion’ is the word for crooked, crowded, spaced, protruding, or overlapping teeth. In other words, if teeth don’t fit together perfectly, you have malocclusion. It is fairly easy to tell if your teeth don’t fit together properly; you could check in the mirror right now! When the teeth

don’t fit together perfectly there are two main reasons: dental and skeletal; in other words, the teeth and the jaws. The question is, how much of the problem is due to the jaws, and how much of the problem is due to the teeth? Let’s start with the jaws. For the most part, the way the bones grow is determined by our genes– so, it is out of our control. If our parents have small jaws, we will have small jaws. If they have a small chin, we will also have a small chin. This doesn’t mean that these issues can’t be corrected, because they can. Most people don’t know that an Orthodontist is also trained to knowhow and when to manipulate bone growth to correct some of these genetic problems – possibly avoiding the need for corrective surgery in the future. Of course, any time you can avoid a surgery – it is a good thing! Teeth are very similar to the jaws in that they are also largely influenced by our genes. The shape, size, and position of our teeth are all determined by our genes. However, there are several other reasons why teeth may not be properly aligned, such as: 1. trauma or injury 2. different sizes and shapes of teeth, and 3. bad habits (for both children and adults) Habits such as nail biting, pen chewing, and most commonly – thumb sucking! Does anyone you know have

pMjwbI i&lm ‘j`j isMG AYl ` .AYl ` .bI.’ dI pRmS o n leI rivMdr gryvwl srI kYnf y w puj ` y srI (kYnyfw) – pMjwbI i&lm ‘j`j isMG AY`l.AY`l. bI.’ dI pRmoSn leI i&lm dy hIro qy au~Gy gwiek rivMdr gryvwl srI kYnyfw ivKy

these bad habits? If so, they could pose a large problem for both the jaws and teeth and is one of the main reasons to see an Orthodontist to help break the habit! A professor of mine once told me ‘if you don’t know what is causing a problem, you won’t be able to fix it’. If you’ve ever had a problem in your relationship, nursing a baby who won’t stop crying, or just trying to perfect your favorite recipe – you know what I’m talking about! Well, the same is true for teeth. This is why learning diagnosis is such a large part of being trained as an Orthodontist. We must first know what went wrong in order to fix the problem. Equally important is knowing what the possible solutions are. The old adage goes ‘if all you have is a hammer, everything will look like a nail’. This is not how you want to approach your orthodontic treatment. There are metal braces, clear braces, Invisalign®, and hidden braces that go on the back side of your teeth. The important part is knowing the strengths and weaknesses of each type of treatment and coming up with the perfect combination that is just right for you or your child. An Orthodontist can help you with making the right decision. How do I see an Orthodontist? There’s good news – an Orthodontist is easy to see. There is no referral necessary and you can usually get a complimentary consultation. Like many things, the art and science of Orthodontics is complex – the most challenging part of malocclusion is knowing why it exists and how to treat it. With specialty training in this field, an Orthodontist can help educate you and guide you towards the right treatment – and this is why you should include an Orthodontist as a member of your families healthcare team.

One-minute party hairstyles

49

Lazy girls, rejoice. These sexy hairdos take less than a minute to pull together.

Clip up half A All you need for this nifty hairdo is a hair clip and a creative streak. Pull up a section of hair on either the left or the right side, or pull the front section back and clip it at the crown. Tease the hair at the crown before you pull it back for volume. Team it with: A structured ensemble or a skirtand-jacket combination. Even Kate Middleton swears by this style when she’s going from a day event to a brunch. Low pony The low ponytail is a glamorous yet low maintenance style and needs a minute to create. Spray your hair and smooth it down. Pull it into a low-slung pony that sits on the nape of the neck. Attach a floral or a studded decorative pin over the band to look partyready. Team it with: A feminine knee-length dress or even a jumpsuit. This is a versatile hairdo that looks effortless with androgynous outfits, too. 5-Second top knot Hide your frizz with a top knot. Gather your hair into a high ponytail and twist it into a bun. To smoothen it out, apply a shine serum. Embellish the knot with beads. You will look cool and relaxed without giving away last night’s escapades. Team it with: A sequinned maxi dress and an animal print coat to keep warm. Feather dusters or long danglers on your ears will make things ultra sexy.

Govt: Parents JAGRAJ ENTERTAINMENT Liberalsponsorship: ltd. $11000 Donate to BC CANCER FOUNDATION P Jasvir Singh

arent’s sponsorship has always been a topic of concern for all immigrants in Canada. Conservative govt made changes to this program and made it very difficult for immigrants to apply for their parents by : 4Limiting number of applications to 5000 each year. 100Increasing required income to 30%. (for example, a family of 5 people that includes husband, wife and 1 child in Canada plus

JAGTAR UPPAL & RAJ SHERGILL (JAGRAJ ENTERTAINMENT LTD) DONATED A 11000 DOLLERS CHEQUE TO B C CANCER FOUNDATION IN THE MEMORY OF JAGRAJ SINGH UPPAL & HARDIAL KAUR GILL AT DANCE CANADA DANCE SHOW. THEY PROMISED TO DONATE THE CHEQUE AT DR JASPINDER NARULA SHOW.

both parents in India, previously required income for 5 was around $51000 but now it is $65000 around.) 4Required 3 years of income before submitting parent’s sponsorship application. Now as Liberal govt is in Parliament and we all are waiting and hoping to get these rules amended to make it easier for us to apply for parents permanently. If the Liberal govt only increase number of applications from 5000 to 10,000 Then it wont make our life easier in terms of other criteria of income that again has to be met with 30% increased level. So , lets see in coming days and hope for the best.
