What is Significance of Ligh Diyas on
day Diwali
D
eepawali is an exceptionally popular Hindu festival of India which is celebrated by the people of the Hindu community. The festival is celebrated every year either in the month of November or October. The significance of Diyas at the time of Diwali is reflected in the fact that the word Deepawali has itself been formed from the word Deep and it means a row of glittering lamps. That makes us even more curious to find out about the ex-

traordinary importance of lighting Diyas on Diwali. Lights and Deepawali Each and every household gets decorated with colourful and lovely lights on Diwali! From oils lamps to vibrant electric lights and candles, people never miss on a single chance to make their homes a glowing and lighting place. Traditionally, people celebrate the festival by lighting earthen lamps with cotton wicks. Though, in most parts of the
country the tradition of earthen lamps has gradually faded away but it still the concept of lights remains unchanged. People often are eager to find out on how and why the concept of Diyas came for celebrating Deepawali. Let’s get a clear view on what is the importance of lighting Diyas on the day of Diwali. An earthen lamp or Diya is synonymous to the festivity of Diwali. Diyas decorate every nook and cranny of the home and make it look as bright as the

with his brother Laxman and wife Sita after defeating Ravana. During his 14 years of exile, Lord Rama along with Hanumana, Laxman and the army of monkeys had defeated Ravana who had abducted Sita. This battle itself signifies the victory of good over the evil. Other than that, there is much more to the lighting of Diyas. It is a customary practice in the Hindu community according to which people light diya in their homes every evening. This not only is a customary practice but it signifies the surrender of one’s soul to the almighty. What Does the Oil in Diyas Represent? The oil that is used to light the Diyas represents all the negative human traits and that includes hatred, jealousy, greed, lust, anger and many more. And, the wick represents our inner self, the soul! The lighting of Diyas symbolises that we need our beautiful mind to clear from these negative things by enlightening our inner self. With the disappearing
oil of the Diyas, these negativities from the home get disappeared. It has a hidden message that enlightening occurs only when we walk on the path of righteousness as Lord Rama did. What Does Diya Symbolises? A Diya is symbolic of knowledge! A person who is ignorant will often keep himself in a dark consignment. He will keep in touch with the positivity of the surrounding only when he realises to get access to the knowledge all around that he will understand the need to celebrate his existence. A Diya symbolises that flame of knowledge will remove ignorance!! And, a Diya not merely signifies the light that it spreads in the homes but in essence it signifies the one and only way to merge our souls with that of the God. It shows us the path of gaining knowledge and enlightening ourselves. Courtesy: www.diwalifestival.org

8 Uncommon Orthodontics Questions that Need to be Answered
Dr Vishal Sharma BSc, DDS, Cert. Ortho. FRCD(C), FCDS(BC)
A
s Abbotsford, Surrey and Langley orthodontists, Dr. Sharma and Dr. Lin answer patients’ questions every day. Usually, they’re related to the cost of Invisalign or braces, the length of treatment or the ideal age for kicking off the teeth-straightening process. However, every so often, we’ll get questions that are a little less common or, occasionally, pretty creative or unexpected. Based on our own experiences and the things people are asking on the Internet, here are some of the more uncommon orthodontics questions we’ve come across and, of course, our answers. 1. Can braces cause harm when going for an MRI? We’ve received questions before about an MRI and braces and it’s a good one. MRI, technically called magnetic resonance imaging, is an imaging exam that utilizes a really powerful magnetic field and radio waves to produce
14
www.lifestylesamagazine.ca
detailed images of the anatomy. Because of the magnetic field, it can be dangerous to have metal objects nearby, which is why when you have an MRI, they ask you to remove things like jewelry or coins in your pocket. It makes sense to worry about whether it’s safe to get an MRI with braces. However, studies of MRI and braces have shown that most orthodontic appliances, including braces, fixed retainers and some palatal expanders, are secure enough to be safe and they won’t heat the tissue around them to a worrisome degree. However, while getting an MRI with braces may be A-Okay as far as safety is concerned, it’s important to note that braces can result in artifacts, which are visual anomalies that interfere with the quality of the image. These artifacts usually occur on images of the facial, orbital or, sometimes, the brain and cervical spine regions. If you’re having a brain scan done or a scan of your sinuses, there’s a small chance that this could be an issue. Thankfully, there are different techniques that can be used to alleviate the artifact and get clearer images. It’s rare that a patient would be asked to remove their braces but it could happen if someone is being screened for a serious issue in the head or neck area, the technician can’t get the necessary images and it can’t wait until orthodontic treatment is finished. If you’re worried about complications from a brain scan and braces, talk to your physician and see what they recommend but you can be rest assured that it’s safe. 2. How can I take my braces off at home?
We saw a question on an Internet forum about taking braces off at home. Thankfully, all of the answers strongly cautioned against doing this. The person inquiring had braces on for many years but moved out of state, didn’t have a new orthodontist and could no longer afford to finish treatment. They were interested in a DIY removal process and were wondering about the cons of taking braces off at home. In the best case scenario, a person might be able to remove their brackets themselves. However, a special adhesive is used to bond your brackets to your teeth. Considering braces are a fixed orthodontic appliance and are meant to stay in place for quite some time, the glue is extremely strong. Without the right tools and experience, you’d likely have a good amount of that adhesive residue stuck to your teeth. The more likely consequence of taking your braces off at home is potentially causing harm. You could be left with cracked teeth, damaged enamel or even a missing tooth if you use force to try to remove your braces. Visiting an orthodontist and letting them know your situation is your best bet if you don’t want to continue treatment. We’re always willing to work with our Langley, Abbotsford and Surrey braces patients and we’d never let it get to the point that they felt they had to remove their hardware on their own. We suspect most doctors would also be willing to work with you in this situation. The cost of having a professional remove your braces pales in comparison to the cost of having damaged teeth restored. NOVEMBER 2018

3. Do people still get braces with headgear? Yes. Headgear still exists and, in some cases, it can be a good treatment option. It’s usually reserved for children in phase I orthodontic treatment who are still developing, as it can help with discrepancies in jaw growth or make space for teeth to come in. In adults or teens, braces and headgear isn’t usually the go-to combination. We have a lot of newer options like TADs (temporary anchorage devices), forsus springs and a slew of other orthodontic appliances that offer a great alternative to headgear. There’s still a stigma around headgear and, when possible, most doctors will try to create a treatment plan that involves wearing it at night or just when a patient is at home, so they don’t have to go to school with it. 4 What are the effects of not brushing your teeth with braces? Patients have asked us this before and it’s usually more out of curiosity and not out of a genuine desire to really skip brushing with braces. The brackets and wires used with braces create a food trap. If you don’t brush away this food debris, it will interact with the bacteria in your mouth and form plaque. When plaque isn’t removed, it releases acids that eat away at your tooth enamel, eventually causing tooth decay and gum disease. In a video Dr. Sharma made about how to brush and floss with braces, he even showed a few images of what happens when you don’t brush your teeth during treatment and, believe us, it’s not good. If the decay is left untreated, you could be looking at the need for extensive fillings or root canals or end up with missing teeth or issues with your gums. You’ll have to put in some extra work to keep your teeth clean when you’re in orthodontic treatment. Correctly flossing and brushing with braces requires learning new techniques but if you’re investing in your smile, it’s well worth it to keep it looking bright. Braces work best in a healthy oral environment and getting cavities during treatment can slow the process down. The bottom line: brush those teeth in the morning, after meals and before bed and be sure to floss at least once a day! 5. Can braces cause loose teeth? Patients sometimes panic because their teeth feel loose after getting braces put on and they’re worried they’re going to fall out. It’s actually perfectly normal to feel like your teeth are loose with braces because your pearly whites are on move. The periodontal ligament stretches when faced with continuous pressure from braces or Invisalign aligners and then the bone that holds the teeth begins to break down in what’s known as bone remodeling. When this happens, the teeth loosen slightly to shift into their ideal locations. When treatment is over, new born forms around the teeth in their new places, the ligament tightens back up and the teeth are secured. If you sustain a blow to the face, however, and you have a loose tooth with braces, it could be another story. Dental trauma, particularly from sports, results in a lot of teeth being

knocked out each year. To protect yourself, always wear a mouthguard. If, after getting hit in the face, you have a fractured, chipped, loose, displaced or completely missing tooth, head to your dentist as soon as possible. Teeth can often be re-implanted for a short time after the injury. Once the immediate aftermath has been dealt with, call our office and we’ll get you in to repair your braces and ensure your treatment stays on course. 6. Can braces change your personality? This one is another question we saw on the Internet. While the braces themselves can’t create any personality changes, you’ll probably notice some changes as you go through treatment and, more so, when your braces come off. We’re not talking about the materials interacting with your brain chemistry or anything but about the huge boost in confidence you’ll get from loving your smile. Our society places a lot of emphasis on having perfect teeth and when you feel good about yourself and how others perceive you, it enhances your self-esteem. You’ll be more likely to take on challenges, interact with others, try new things and grow as a person. That certainly equates to a personality change. Before Dr. Lin and Dr. Sharma were Surrey, Abbotsford and Langley orthodontists, they were braces patients themselves. The confidence they gained from straightening their teeth and how it transformed them for the better were part of the reason they both got into the profession. It’s powerful stuff! Be prepared to become a more
7. Do dental braces commonly cause people to develop lisps? Braces don’t cause a lisp in the long-term and they can actually be a treatment for certain speech problems. Some types of malocclusion (an improper bite) create a lisp and by repositioning the teeth and jaw through orthodontic treatment, it can improve a patient’s speech. In the short-term, there is a relationship between orthodontic appliances, including dental braces and lisps. When you first start braces, particularly if you have lingual braces, or Invisalign treatment, it may feel as if you’re talking funny while you get acclimated to having an appliance in your mouth. This goes away quickly. To speed up the process and help your speech return to normal, talk as much as you can. Practice makes perfect after all. Chat with friends on the phone, sing along to your favorite songs and read aloud to yourself. 8. Is it possible to liproll (beatbox technique) with braces? We’ve come across this question in forums and there are quite a few YouTube videos and tutorials about beatboxing with braces. It’s not a question many orthodontists probably hear very often. However, based on how awesome we’ve seen people beatbox with braces on, we’d say the answer is yes. As for the liproll, if your braces are causing you discomfort when you attempt to do it, you can try covering the brackets that are irritating your lips with orthodontic wax. If you have more questions about orthodontic treatment or you’re ready to start working on your dream smile, book a free consultation at Aura Orthodontics. Bandi Chhor Divas
Reflection: A Lesson In Selflessness
T
he Sikhs celebrate Diwali as Bandi Chhor Divas in memory of the return of the sixth Guru,Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji from detention in the Gwalior Fort. When Murtaja Khan, Nawab of Lahore, noticed that Guru Ji had constructed Sri Akaal Takht Sahib, ‘The Throne of the Almighty’, at Amritsar, and was also strengthening his army, he informed about it to the Mughal Emperor Jahangeer. He emphasized that he is making preparations to take revenge for his father’s torture and martyrdom. Jahangeer at once sent Wazir Khan and

Guncha Beg to Amritsar to arrest Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji.. But Wazir Khan who was a devotee of the Sikh Guru’s requested the Guru to accompany them to Delhi as Emperor Jahangeer wanted to meet him. Guru Sahib accepted the invitation and reached Delhi. On their first meeting when Jahangeer saw the Guru, he was completely won over by his youthful charm and holiness. The Emperor gave a royal welcome to the Guru. But Chandu Shah could not bear it. His daughter was still unmarried and thus the rotten sore
was still bleeding (that Guru Arjan Dev Ji and the Sikh Sangat had refused the offer to marry his daughter with his son Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji). At Agra, the Emperor fell seriously ill. The physicians tried their best but they failed to care him. Then Chandu Shah conspired with the astrologers, who were asked to tell the Emperor that his sickness was due to wrong track of stars and it could, be cared only if some holy man goes to Gwallior Fort to offer prayers to the deity. He also pointed out that Guru Hargobind Ji was such a holy man and he should be asked go to Gwallior Fort.

Buddha Ji and other devotees sikhs met the Guru. They informed him about the despicable condition of the Sikhs, who were waiting for him with great eagerness. The Guru assured them that they should not worry, he would join them soon. In the meantime Sai Mian Meer Ji met Jahangeer and asked him to release the Guru. Jahangeer, who had fully recovered ordered Wazir Khan to release Guru Sahib. But Guru Ji declined to leave the fort unless the princes confined in the fort were also released.
At the Emperor’s request Guru Ji agreed and left for the Gawalior Fort. In the fort Guru Ji met many princes who were detained there due to political reasons. They were leading a very deplorable life. With the help of Hari Dass (the governor of fort) Guru Ji improved their condition. Hari Daas was a Sikh of Guru Nanak and he become ardent devotee of Guru Hargobind. Once when Chandu wrote to Hari Daas to poison Guru Sahib, he at once placed that letter before Guru Ji. When several months passed and Guru Ji was not released then Baba

When Wazir Khan informed the Emperor about the desire of the Guru Ji, the Emperor was forced to agree, though he didn’t want to free the prisoners. But the Emperor put down the condition that “whoever can hold on to the Guru’s cloak can be released.” Having compassion for others, Guru Sahib was determined to get the fifty–two Hindhu princes prisoners freed. He had a cloak made with 52 corners, for each King to hold on to and Guru Ji finally left the fort with all fifty-two princes. As the Guru liberated all the prisioners he is known as Bandi-Chhor (Liberator). Jahangeer was very much pleased with his Goodness. He ordered Wazir Khan to bring Guru Hargobind Sahib in his court at Delhi with great honour. Jahangeer had realised that he was wrong for torturing and killing His father (Guru Arjan
Dev Ji), who had not committed any crime or offense. He exonerate himself by indicting the crime on Chandu Shah and other officers. A Gurudwara known as Bandi-Chhor is built at the place where Guru Ji stayed during his detention. The Sikhs celebrate this day as Bandi Chhorr Divas i.e., “the day of release of detainees” and illuminations are made in the Gurdwaras and in homes. What do we learn from Bandi-Chhor Diwas? 52 Hindu Kings were freed with Guru Sahib. Guru Sahib could have left the Fort alone, however, Guru Ji thought of others before himself. For him the ohers freedom and rights were more important than his own. Guru Ji never thought only of his emancipation but was concerned about everyone’s emancipation (SARBAT DA BHALLA). This is the attitude and virtue which Guru Ji wanted to fill within his Sikhs. We should pray for His mercy. May WAHEGURU emancipate our soul from five dreaded vices and help us to enjoy real essence of light within. History of Christmas
Trees L
ong before the advent of Christianity, plants and trees that remained green all year had a special meaning for people in the winter.Discover the history of the Christmas tree, from the earliest winter solstice celebrations, to Queen Victoria and all the way to the annual lighting of the Rockefeller Center tree. How It All Got Started Long before the advent of Christianity, plants
and trees that remained green all year had a special meaning for people in the winter. Just as people today decorate their homes during the festive season with pine, spruce, and fir trees, ancient peoples hung evergreen boughs over their doors and windows. In many countries it was believed that evergreens would keep away witches, ghosts, evil spirits, and illness. Did you know? Christmas trees are grown in all
50 states including Hawaii and Alaska. In the Northern hemisphere, the shortest day and longest night of the year falls on December 21 or December 22 and is called the winter solstice. Many ancient people believed that the sun was a god and that winter came every year because the sun god had become sick and weak. They celebrated the solstice because it meant that at last the sun god would begin to get well. Evergreen boughs reminded them of all the green plants that would grow again when the sun god was strong and summer would return. The ancient Egyptians worshipped a god called Ra, who had the head of a hawk and wore the sun as a blazing disk in his crown. At the solstice, when Ra began to recover from the illness, the Egyptians filled their homes with green palm rushes which symbolized for them the triumph of life over death. Early Romans marked the solstice with a feast called the Saturnalia in honor of Saturn, the god of agriculture. The Romans knew that the solstice meant that soon farms and orchards would be green and fruitful. To mark the occasion, they decorated their homes and temples with evergreen boughs. In Northern Europe the mysterious Druids, the priests of the ancient Celts, also decorated their temples with evergreen boughs as a symbol of everlasting life. The fierce Vikings in Scandinavia thought that evergreens were the special plant of the sun god, Balder. Courtesy: www.history.com

How to Clean Gold Jewellery Like a Pro Ritika Tiwari
I
Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist
t doesn’t take long to fall in love with a new piece of sparkly gold jewellery. It also doesn’t take long for that gold jewellery to fade, whether you are wearing it on a regular basis or just storing it in a jewellery box. Taking your jewellery for professional cleaning may do the job, but it’s time-consuming and expensive as well. The good news is that, you can easily clean your favourite gold jewellery pieces like a pro, with common cleaning supplies that you might already have at home. Since gold has high chances of tarnish, here are two things you should completely avoid if you often wear gold jewellery: Soap: It’s best to stay away from soaps with unknown ingredients since they may have chemicals which can badly affect your jewellery. That is why, you should always take off your gold necklaces or rings before showering. Chlorine: Whether you are cleaning your house with chlorine bleach or going for a swim, take off your jewellery beforehand. Chlorine, especially at high temperatures, can discolur your precious gold jewellery, or in worst cases, cause permanent damage. Here are some of the house hold items you can use to clean gold jewellery like a pro: 1- Ammonia Mix half a cup of clear ammonia with one cup of warm water and soak your gold jewellery in it for about 10 minutes. After taking it out, gently wipe your jewellery with a soft cloth, and let it dry. Though, make sure to not do this to jewellery pieces with pearls in them as ammonia can damage and dull their delicate surface. 2- Baking soda Add ¼ cup of baking soda to 2 tablespoons of water and make a thick paste. With a damp sponge, rub this paste gently on your
26

jewellery and buff it dry. If your jewellery has been badly tarnished, then replace water with vinegar and follow the same method. Although, make sure to not use this technique with jewellery containing gemstones as the paste could loosen the glue. 3- Beer Walk to your fridge and take out a can of beer to clean your gold jewellery -- Yes, it’s that easy. Pour some bear on a soft cloth and rub it gently on the jewellery pieces. Once you are done, clean the jewellery with a dry cloth or towel and let it dry. 4- Toothpaste A great way to clear your favourite jewellery is by cleaning it with a toothpaste. Just mix the paste in some water and clean the jewellery pieces with a soft toothbrush. You can dip the toothbrush in warm water to make it softer, before you start cleaning. If you are doing it for the first time, make sure to dilute the toothpaste with more water to get an idea about how strong the solution is. After scrubbing, clean the jewellery under running water and dab it with a dry cloth. 5- Soda Add some soda to water and soak your
jewellery pieces in it for about 10 minutes. Take them out, clean jewellery pieces with lukewarm water, and scrub them gently with a soft toothbrush if you think the dirt hasn’t been properly removed. Soak the jewellery in some warm water for a few seconds before you finally clean it with a dry cloth. 6- Boiling water For plain gold jewellery that doesn’t have any stones studded in it, nothing works better than simple boiling water. Leave the jewellery in boiling water for about five minutes, and then put it under warm running water for a few seconds. Dab the pieces with a soft cloth and place them on a table for an hour to air dry them. With these simple tricks, your gold jewellery will always be shining and sparkly NOVEMBER 2018

Fireworks,

housands see the new year in with spectacular shows, while in New York Mariah Carey has a glitch-free set in a frosty Times Square flowers to make your gift more attractive. Thousands of revellers packed cities across the UK to see in the new year with fireworks captivating crowds in London and Edinburgh. Crowds took to the streets to join lively celebrations amid preparations by emergency services to tackle one of the busiest nights of the year. The firework display in London featured a soundtrack dominated by women to mark the centenary of women being granted the vote, while cities around the world also had similarly impressive displays. More than 100,000 ticket-holders watched

the fireworks explode over the Thames to a soundtrack by Aretha Franklin, Annie Lennox, Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa and Florence Welch. In Scotland the forecast of strong wind did not end up affecting Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations as the gales of up to 80mph confined themselves to other parts of the country. Tens of thousands saw in 2018 against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. Underbelly, which was producing the event for the first time, promised the “best party ever” for the 75,000 people attending, with live music, DJs, street entertainment and the “ultimate fireworks display”. Meanwhile in New York, throngs of revellers braved the second-coldest New Year’s Eve on record in New York to usher in 2018 as the glittering crystal ball dropped in Times
Square. The temperature was 10F (-12C), the chilliest celebration since 1917, when it was only 1F (-17C). Partygoers heeded warnings from authorities and wrapped up in extra layers, dancing and jogging in place to ward off the cold. Mariah Carey successfully made it through her set on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest after bungling it last year. Carey had technical difficulties during a live performance of her hit Emotions on the ABC show in 2016. She stopped singing, paced the stage and told the audience to finish the lyrics for her. This year, she performed her 1990s hits Vision of Love and Hero and joked that it was a “disaster” when she could not get any hot tea. Fireworks explode over Big Ben and the London Eye at midnight. Photograph: Leon Neal/Getty Images In Paris, throngs of locals and tourists headed to the Champs-Élysées to attend a fireworks show at the Arc de Triomphe. France’s New Year’s Eve celebrations were placed under high security, following a series of attacks by Islamic extremists in recent years, and 100,000 police officers and soldiers, along with 40,000 rescuers, were deployed across the country. Germans also rang in the new year under tight security from police mindful of widespread sexual abuse of women in Cologne two years ago and of a terrorist attack on a Christmas market in 2016. Police in Berlin put an extra 1,600 officers on duty and said that large bags and backpacks would not be allowed on the “Party Mile” leading from Brandenburg Gate, where NOVEMBER 2018
thousands celebrated at midnight. Police in Frankfurt imposed similar restrictions in the celebration area along the river Main in the country’s financial capital. In Indonesia, hundreds of couples celebrated by getting married in Jakarta in a free mass wedding. The communal event, attended by 437 couples, was staged by authorities to ease residents’ struggles with bureaucracy. Many Jakartans cannot access public services because they have never legally been married, according to governor Anies Baswedan. “If they want to celebrate their wedding anniversaries, they will not only celebrate it with their families but the whole world will celebrate with them because it coincides with New Year’s,” the governor said. Celebrations in Russia were hampered by technical difficulties as Palace Square in St Petersburg was temporarily evacuated and a 25-metre (80ft) Christmas tree in the east of the country went up in flames. In Moscow, the weather was less than festive. Usually blanketed with snow on New Year’s Eve, the Russian capital this year was suffering a long spell of intermittent rain and constant grey skies, but that did not stop the spectacular fireworks display from going

ahead as planned above Red Square. In Dubai the 828-metre Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, once again served as the focal point of the new year celebrations in the United Arab Emirates, though this year authorities decided against fireworks and chose a massive LED light show. How to Make (and Keep) a New Year’s Resolution
Are you making a resolution for 2019? Warning: More than half of all resolutions fail, but this year, they don’t have to be yours. Here’s how to identify the right resolution to improve your life, create a plan on how to reach it, and become part of the small group of people that successfully achieve their goal.
A
lot of these resolutions fail because they’re not the right resolutions. And a resolution may be wrong for one of three main reasons: • It’s a resolution created based on what someone else (or society) is telling you to change. • It’s too vague. • You don’t have a realistic plan for achieving your resolution. Your goals should be smart — and SMART. That’s an acronym coined in the journal Management Review in 1981 for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. It may work for management, but it can also work in setting your resolutions, too.
30
www.lifestylesamagazine.ca
Specific. Your resolution should be absolutely clear. “Making a concrete goal is really important rather than just vaguely saying ‘I want to lose weight.’ You want to have a goal: How much weight do you want to lose and at what time interval?” said Katherine L. Milkman, an associate professor of operations information and decisions at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. “Five pounds in the next two months — that’s going to be more effective.” Measurable. This may seem obvious if your goal is a fitness or weight loss related one, but it’s also important if you’re trying to cut back
on something, too. If, for example, you want to stop biting your nails, take pictures of your nails over time so you can track your progress in how those nails grow back out, said Jeffrey Gardere, a psychologist and professor at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine. Logging progress into a journal or making notes on your phone or in an app designed to help you track behaviors can reinforce the progress, no matter what your resolution may be. Achievable. This doesn’t mean that you can’t have big stretch goals. But trying to take too big a step too fast can leave you frustrated, or affect other areas of your life to the point that your NOVEMBER 2018

resolution takes over your life — and both you and your friends and family flail. So, for example, resolving to save enough money to retire in five years when you’re 30 years old is probably not realistic, but saving an extra $100 a month may be. (And if that’s easy, you can slide that number up to an extra $200, $300 or $400 a month). Relevant. Is this a goal that really matters to you, and are you making it for the right reasons? “If you do it out of the sense of self-hate or remorse or a strong passion in that moment, it doesn’t usually last long,” said Dr. Michael Bennett, a psychiatrist and co-author of two self-help books. “But if you build up a process where you’re thinking harder about what’s good
32
www.lifestylesamagazine.ca
for you, you’re changing the structure of your life, you’re bringing people into your life who will reinforce that resolution, then I think you have a fighting chance.” Time-bound. Like “achievable,” the timeline toward reaching your
goal should be realistic, too. That means giving yourself enough time to do it with lots of smaller intermediate goals set up along the way. “Focus on these small wins so you can make gradual progress,” Charles Duhigg, author of “The Power of Habit” and a former New York Times writer, said. “If you’re building a habit, you’re planning for the next decade, not the next couple of months.” Courtesy: www.lifehack.org

Trust is one of the most important foundational blocks of friendship. It allows us to open up to our friends and safely share our lives with them. At the same time, betrayal of trust can feel devastating in a friendship, or any relationship for that matter. When you betray a friend’s confidence by sharing something they told you in confidence, it can put a dent in your relationship with them.
How to Build
Friends
T
hat is why, it’s important to be clear with your friends about what trust means to you, so that you are both on the same page. There are several ways to build and demonstrate trust in friendships, including:

There are many friends who can show up to a party or to get a drink with you, but true friends are the ones who always return calls and messages, and actually show up when things get rough. Instead of just being available to your friends on your own convenience, go out of your way to show them that you actually care for them and talk to them when they are going through a tough time.
2- Be kind
Friends can make mistakes, give them some room for error and be kinder. If they change or cancel plans, call them up or text them to make sure that everything is alright at their end, instead of assuming that they are just ignoring you. If they say something which hurts you, be honest with them about it and let them know exactly why you felt hurt.
3- Be completely present
When your friend is talking to you about something important, give them your full attention by putting your phone down and try not to interrupt them. If there is an important social media update, it is still going to be there after your conversation with your friend is over. Also, resist from giving

4- Be considerate
While it’s important to bring your walls down around your friends, sharing too much intimate information about your life in the early phases of your friendship can be rather overwhelming, for both you and your friend. Take one step at a time and move slowly instead of rushing into a new friendship.
5- Have integrity
Show your friends that you are the type of person who can be trusted with private and intimate information. True friends never gossip behind each other’s backs. Even if it’s a small detail that your friend shared with you, do not discuss it with others unless you know your friend is alright with it.

It’s best to talk to your friends about this and be clear about boundaries. You should know what is to be shared and what shouldn’t be shared in order to strengthen and maintain your friendship.
6- Be interdependent
day off to spend time with you and invite you to their house, you should do the same for them as well. By following all these simple tips, you will be able to build trust in friendships and have friends who stay by your side through the thick and thin.
Trusting friends are able to ask each for help even when they are vulnerable, desperate, or scared. Open yourself up more to your friends, it will also help them to open themselves up to you as well and reach out to you when they are facing a problem.
7- Be reciprocative
Friendships can often go sour if one person is always on the receiving end of things. You need to be more reciprocative in friendships and respect each other mutually. For instance, if a friend takes a

Love Marriage vs Arranged Marriage:
Which is Better?
When it comes to marriage, everyone wants to find their perfect match and soulmate. In love marriages, people choose their own partners, while in arranged marriages, families choose their partners for them. Though, we all know that a great marriage isn’t about finding the perfect match, it is about loving each other, despite the differences. your family might be applying to select the potential matches. In most traditional families, parents often think about more superficial parameters like religion, caste, income, and skin colour. That may be important to some, it doesn’t necessarily guarantee that you will meet someone who

he love marriage vs arranged marriage debate has been going on for decades, especially in Indian families. But which one is a better choice? Let’s find out:
Finding prospects
Arranged marriages When it comes to finding prospects, arranged marriages are definitely better since your parents and extended family do all the necessary hard work and all you have to do is meet the matches. With your family vetting all the prospects, you are also assured of their background. For people who are reserved or have been incredibly busy with their work to meet anyone, this is a God sent approach, but it also has its own disadvantages. You have no control over what criteria

right person, at least you have the freedom to pick and choose your own partner. At the same time, it can be difficult to find someone suitable enough to date amidst your busy schedules. You also have to filter through people who are looking for the same thing as you. A large part of people who actively date are not necessarily looking to get married any time soon. Overall, arranged marriages are good when you know your family understands your own personality and expectations from your future partner. If they don’t, love marriages are more suitable.
2- Shortlisting the perspectives Arranged marriages Shortlisting the prospective matches to find that special someone in an arranged marriage process can be rather complicated and tedious. The biggest challenge in this process is that you have to shortlist matches after just meeting them once or twice. Though, since you are essentially meeting strangers, it becomes easier to keep the emotions aside and focus on objective facts during the shortlisting process. But at the
Love marriages With love marriages, you have several opportunities, often years, to interact with someone before you even think about getting married. With the time you spend together, you are able to understand each other’s interests and behaviors. You are also able to discuss your future plans to make sure you are both on the same page. Though with love marriages, when your heart has already decided, it can be difficult to be objective. When you are really into someone, you may not be able to see the differences and signs of the relationship going sour in the future. These differences can often become apparent after marriage. In this case, while the arranged marriage process can allow you to be more objective, you don’t get enough chances to meet and interact with your prospective matches to really understand if they are a good fit for you. Love marriages, on the other hand, offer plenty of opportunities, which is why they win this round as well. At the end of the day, whether it’s a love marriage or an arranged one, what matters is that you are happy with your partner.

breast cancer risk
machine learning tool can help identify which high-risk breast lesions are likely to become cancerous with 97 per cent accuracy, an advance that may help reduce unnecessary surgeries, a study has revealed. High-risk breast lesions are biopsydiagnosed lesions that carry an increased risk of developing into cancer. Surgery is often the preferred treatment option. But a lot of the lesions do not pose an immediate danger to patients. However, doctors tend to over-screen for breast cancer. Using the machine learning tool could help improve detection as well as prevent over treatment, said researchers from Harvard University. The findings showed that the tool could avoid almost one-third of benign surgeries with accurate prediction of 37 out of 38 lesions, or 97 per cent, that were upgraded to cancer.
The tool, described in the journal Radiology, also identified the terms “severely” and “severely atypical” in the text of the pathology reports as associated with a greater risk of upgrade to cancer. “Our study provides ‘proof of concept’ that machine learning can not only decrease
unnecessary surgery by nearly one-third in this specific patient population, but can also support more targeted, personalised approaches to patient care,” said Constance Lehman, Professor at Harvard Medical School. Courtsey: ANI

Try them on, every time, each time When you’re out there, purchasing heels, never buy before wearing it couple of times and walking in it to make sure that it is comfortable enough for you. Sometimes, people are in a hurry and they tend to rush with just putting it on once, gazing in the mirror to conclude that’s it fine and comfortable, when it might not be. This is why, trying them out helps you out more than you might think. 3. Check for problems If you’re done walking in them doesn’t mean you can walk out in them either, when coming to heels, you have to be extra considerate because it’s necessary that a strap, belt, heel are all in place. Even the biggest of biggest brands might falter if put onto the right foot. So before instantly pur-
chasing it, make sure that you’ve seen it and it’s alright. 4. Walk If you’re purchasing it for an occasion or for everyday use, you must work out your buying options accordingly keeping style and both comfort in mind. So you will need to practice walking in them beforehand your occasion or even you buy the best brand, you’ll never know how to walk in them and you’ll end up just stocking them in your home. ourtesy: Femina

Ways to take care of your lips naturally
T
he skin on your lips is much thinner than the skin on the other parts of the body. This makes it easier for it to crack and chap and makes it much more important for you to take extra care of it.
“For Better experience, Best taste
Wishing you all a very Happy Diwali, Merry Christmas & New Year
Chapping This can occur almost in any season. 4To prevent and treat, apply a good lip balm daily. 4 Do it in such a way that it slightly overlaps the edges of the lips. 4Look for a balm which provides sun protection and has elements like Vitamins A, C or E and AHAs. Splitting Cracks often occur after sleeping in dry air. 4To prevent this, be sure to apply a good lip balm or a thick moisturiser before going to bed. 4Also try to keep your lips as dry as possible, as bacteria in the air can cause them to crack. Cold sores This is caused by viral infections and often look like blisters and open scabs. 4To avoid re-infection, use cotton swabs to apply lipstick while sore is visible. 4Also make sure that you do not apply a lipstick or a lip gloss if you have blister on your lips. This can cause further infection and also make your lips drier. Lipstick bleeding This begins as the skin around the mouth loses collagen and elastic tissue with age. 4Use a waxy lip liner to outline your lips. This will contain the lipstick within the line. 4You can also ensure that your lipstick does not bleed by keeping a thin layer of cotton around your lips to prevent this faux pas to happen. Depressed spouse can make you weak too
P
eople married to a frail spouse are likely to become frail themselves and a person married to a depressed spouse is more likely to be sad, say researchers, adding that in older adults, frailty and depression are connected within couples. Frailty, a condition that affects 10 percent of people aged 65 and older, can make older adults more prone to disability, falls, hospitalisation and a shorter lifespan. They found the frailer an older person is the more likely it is that he or she will become depressed. The more depressed an older person is the more likely he or she is to become frail. The study, published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, examined the effects of frailty and depression on married couples. These findings are based on a study of data from 1,260 married couples, aged 65 and older, collected during the Cardiovascular Health Study.
60
www.lifestylesamagazine.ca
Although we know much about the effects of frailty and depression on individuals, up until now, little has been uncovered about how these two conditions may be connected within couples. Interestingly, older husbands tended to be more depressed and frail than younger husbands. Older wives were not more depressed, but were frailer than younger wives. Generally, people are considered frail if they have three or more of these conditions: Low body weight (unintentional loss of 10 pounds in the past year), weakness, exhaustion, slowness and physical inactivity. Frailty and depression symptoms may be intertwined for spouses, suggesting that senior living facilities might consider ways to increase couples’ engagement in physical activities, social activities and mutual support, the researchers suggested. TEENAGE RELATIONSHIPSBetter Experience Mixed Taste
Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM (A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp.)
Early teenage (13-15 years)relationships often involve exploring physical intimacy and sexual feelings. Parents may not feel ready for this, in succession, but they have an important role in guiding and supporting their child through this important developmental stage. Teenage relationships- a major development:
62
www.lifestylesamagazine.ca
These relationships come with all the other changes going on during adolescence i.e. physical, social and emotional. And they’re linked to your child’s growing interest in body image and a burgeoning desire to look at best, enjoy independence and privacy in particular. Relationships bring lots of emotional ups and downs for children. And parents are also affected being a part of nuclear or blended family. Normally, the child experience feelings of infatuation which can besome times a bit confronting for parents. But these feelings are leading your child to developa deeper capacity to mature and learn by developing intimate relationships. As the child passes through the corridor of uncertainty, it may give parentsa fair cause of concern. Keeping in view the use, abuse or misuse of relationships here, there and everywhere parents are always worried and want to intervene, though in many cases they feel hapless, hopeless and helpless.
Parents’ experience- laden - guidance can help their teen child to separate the chaff from the wheat; and take life affecting decisions in time and in a correct manner. The only stipulation is the child should believe in them. When teenage relationships normally start There is no right age to define such relationships in the light of the fact that every child is different, and every family do feel differently about this issue. And as such culture, creed, custom, ethnicity and race also play a decisive role. As per considered view of experts fol-
NOVEMBER 2018
If parents keep the lines of communication open and let the child know that they are there to listen, the child will be more likely to come to them with questions and concerns. lowing are some of the behavior pattern of teenagers: 9-11 years old child start exhibiting signs of more independence from the family and now more interested in his/ her friends. 10-14 years, child might want to spend more time in mixed gender groups, which might eventually end up in a romantic relationship. 15-19 years, romantic relationships can become central to social life. Friendships might become deeper, more stable or a break up may happen. Generally speaking, teenage relationships might last only a few weeks or months. The prime reason is the infatuation for the person and nothing else.Though some choose to focus on schoolwork, sport or other interests yet a romantic relationship can occur in the late teens. First crush, an identity crush: Before a child starts having relationships, he might have one or more crushes. An identity crush is when your child finds someone he/ she admires and wants to be like. A romantic crush: It is the beginning of romantic feelings towards person of other gender. It’s about a child imagining another likable person as suitable. These crushes normally do not last very long because ideas of perfection often break down when your child gets to know the other person in a closer manner. Early teenage relationships Younger teenagers usually hang out together in groups. They might meet up with someone special among friends, and then gradually starts pending more time with that person alone. The most influential role models for teenagers are the grown-ups in their lives. You can be a positive role model for
NOVEMBER 2018
respectful relationships and friendships by treating your partner, friends and family with care and respect. Just talking about both men and women respectfully lets your child know you think everyone is equal and valuable. Talking about teenage relationships with your child Family outlook plays a big part in the way a child thinks about teenage relationships. If a family encourage conversations about feelings, friendships and family relationships, it can help teenager feel confident to talk about teenage relationships in general. If your child knows what respectful relationships look like in general, he/she can relate this directly to romantic relationships. Depending on your values and family rules, you and your child might need to discuss behavior and ground rules, plus consequences for breaking the rules. For example, you might talk about the amount of time your child spends with his girlfriend versus the amount of time he spends studying. You might also want to agree on some strategies for what your child should do if he feels unsafe or threatened.Young people might also talk to their friends, which is healthy and normal. They still need your back-up, though, so keeping the lines of communication open is very important. Sexuality in teenage relationships If your child is in a relationship, it can bring up questions about sex and intimacy. Though not all teenage relationships include sex, but most teenagers will experiment with sexual behavior at some later stage. This is why every school gives clear information on contraception, safe sex and sexually transmitted diseases (STD). Peer Pressure Peer pressure can play a reasonable role. A child may feel compelled to have a boyfriend or girlfriend because other fellow students re into it. If a child is encouraged to have comfortable, open discussions about friends and relationships with parents then the child can actually get more mature to decide the right or wrong. Same-sex attraction For some young people, sexual development during adolescence will include same-sex attraction and experiences. Under 10% of young teens start realizing they have same-sex attraction.
If the person your child is interested in, is older or younger, it could be worth mentioning that people of different ages might want different things from relationshipsenmasse. A larger number of such young people might develop bisexual attraction. If a child feels confused about his feelings or attraction to someone else, parents need to respondpositively A big part of this is being clear about your own feelings about same-sex attraction. Sexuality develops and often changes over time. Teenage relationships and break-ups Break-ups and broken hearts are part of teenage relationships; also, the sad part is when some are made public in their social circles i.e.at school, or online on social networking websites. A teenager might be sad and emotional if his relationship ends. Needless to add that this is part of learning as how to cope with difficult decisions and dissipated disappointments. Now a child might need some time and space, a parental shoulder to cry on, and a willing ear to listen with empathy. He might also need some distraction. Active listening by parents can help pick up on your child’s needs. But if your child seems sad or even depressed for more than a few weeks after a break-up, it might be worth getting some counselling from a health professional, such as your Family Physician. Many people and services can help on this score. Apart from parents your family doctor, the school counsellor, your local community health center or a call on 811 can help. As parents, we need to make sure our child has developmentally appropriate sex education at home and at school. Parents must not forget that now the world is a country and every country is a global village and electronic media is playing a huge role to provide tools and platforms for our dear teenage children to engage, disengage and again engage.

hat is why, before focusing on fixing your outside appearance, focus on the inside and try to feel happy from within. Here are some quick tips to discovering your inner beauty and happiness: 1- Embrace your physical features Society’s idea of beauty changes with every decade and century. Just because your body doesn’t align with the currently accepted idea of beauty, doesn’t mean you aren’t beautiful. The trends will always come and go. Instead of changing yourself according to the new trends, embrace your physical features. After all, beauty doesn’t depend on shapes or sizes, it depends on the kind of attitude you have towards your body. 2- Change your relationship with the mirror Instead of looking into the mirror to fix your hair or check if that annoying pimple has disappeared, look at your best aspects and focus on them. Pick out three best aspects of your body that you like, every
66
www.lifestylesamagazine.ca
day. As you look in the mirror, give positive affirmations and compliments to yourself. While you are doing that, don’t forget to smile. Initially it might feel weird talking to yourself in the mirror, but its just a part of the process which will eventually make you feel more confident and embrace your inner beauty. 3- Get rid of negativity According to research, women have on average 13 negative thoughts about their body everyday. To really feel beautiful from the inside, you need to reverse that negativity and fix your self image issues. Instead of being harsh and over critical about yourself, put your focus on all the positive things. 4- Confidence is the key Once you have deleted negative thoughts from your mind and braved in front of the mirror, it’s time to be a little more confident and stand taller. Put on a smile, work on your body posture and make sure you look people right in the eye when you meet them. If you don’t feel confident just yet, we recommend faking it till you really make it. Sometimes behaving as if you are confident can indeed make you feel more confident. 5- Develop hobbies Find activities that you are passionate about which have nothing to do with shopping, makeup, or mirrors. Whether its an online course that could help you improve your skills or an outdoor activity
that you have been thinking about doing for a long time, pick one that makes you feel happy and content because that is all that really matters. 6- Weed out your friend circle There are two kinds of people in life -- One who will always give you positive compliments and support you no matter what, and others who will always pick out shortcomings in you even when you look perfect. To truly feel beautiful from the inside, you need to weed out those people from your life who bring nothing but negativity with them. Instead, focus on creating meaningful and nurturing relationships with people who have always seen the good in you and supported you through difficult times. Invest your energy, time, and money in people that make you feel glad that you are alive. 7 - Be yourself At some point or other in your life, you will feel the societal pressure to fit into the norms and change yourself just so everyone around you can easily accept you. While doing that may sound easy, it’s not. You may just end up being unhappy about who you have turned into. Instead, be unapologetically yourself. You should feel comfortable in your own skin. People will appreciate you for who you are, and if they can’t accept you for your true authentic self, then they shouldn’t even be in your life. How to hide
belly fat by dressing smartly, 10 tips to guide you
D
ressing for your body shape is very important to look good. But if a bulging tummy or belly fat is turning out to be a problem, there are ways to dress that can help you hide it. Bhavya Chawla, chief stylist at Voonik and fashion designer Reynu Taandon list ways to hide your tummy fat: 4Wear dark colours or busy prints on your upper body. This will help you look slim and hide your tummy fat. 4Avoid wearing shiny and bright colours on your upper body. 4Avoid wearing too tight or too loose cloths on your upper body. Too tight cloths will highlight your tummy even more, and your body looks shapeless if you wear too loose cloths. So, try to wear medium-fit cloths. 4Go for mid-rise when it comes to jeans, pants, shalwars or skirts. Wear them around your navel. This will help in concealing the tummy. 4If you are wearing tops, then body suits are the best option for you. This gives you a sleek
look. 4Girls tend to buy clothes a size smaller thinking that it will make them look slimmer. On the contrary, this highlights your tummy and makes you feel uncomfortable. Therefore, the size of your body shaper should be one size larger. 4While buying undergarments, make sure you buy mid-rise panties. Avoid low or highrise. 4Choose high slits while opting for kurtis. This helps in concealing the tummy. 4Layering is a good technique to conceal tummy fat. This divides your body into three parts and it helps in looking slimmer. For example, wear a contrast coloured jacket on your kurti. But the kurta should be of a different colour and the buttons should be kept open. 4With make-up as well as big earrings and neck pieces, you can attract the attention of others to your face and people won’t notice your tummy fat. It’s a simple game plan in this novel attraction in the suburbs east of the Strip: throw hand axes at painted wooden bullseyes in one of 23 chain link-fenced lanes. An endorphin rush soon follows. Newbies are given expert instruction from trained staff on safety protocols and proper aiming form, including underhand. One you’re in the literal swing of things, there are a number of organized games like ‘Canadian Cricket,’ ‘Around the World,’ and ‘Monkey See, Monkey Do’ to put your newfound axe hurling chops to competitive use. ourtesy: www.lonelyplanet.com

Simple ways in which you can reduce stress
W
e lead a fast-paced life these days. And stress has become an integral part of it. From the daily commute to work, and the constant FOMO, there are a lot of things that add to stress and it is fast emerging as one of the major reasons affecting the health of people around the world. The American Medical Association has even identified stress as the cause of more than 60 per cent of all human illness. High levels of stress can lead to heart disease, intestinal problems, diabetes and even cancer. Here are a few ways in which you can cut down stress in daily life. Meditation The ancient practice of meditation has stood the test of time. Indian yogis and sages have been meditating for centuries. Mediation is, in fact, a way of life which teaches you to focus on the present moment and cut out all the thoughts that crowd our heads. Yoga says that to achieve the true states of meditation, you need to go through several stages like physical position, breath control, relaxation and the advanced stages of concentration, contemplation and absorption. Mediation helps you relax, and focus on the moment, while ridding your mind of the stream of thoughts that cause stress. Deep breaths While meditation involves slow and relaxed

breathing, deep breathing involves contraction of the diaphragm. When you take deep breaths, air enters the lungs and your chest rises and the belly expands. Deep breathing, says The American Institute of Stress, is the body’s natural relaxation response. This technique helps combat stress by reducing the heart rate and lowering blood pressure. Taking deep breaths activates the hypothalamus, to send out neurohormones that keep stress-producing hormones at bay and triggers a relaxation technique in the body. It allows the lungs to take in more oxygen, slowing down the heartbeat and lowering the blood pressure, making you feel relaxed. Stretching When you are stressed, the blood flow in the body is restricted. As a result, there will be knots in the muscles in the shoulders and neck. Your joints and back will hurt, and the body will become stiffer. When you stretch, it simulates the receptors in the nervous system that bring down the production of stress hormones. According to the Mayo Clinic, stretching increases the blood flow to the muscles. This, in turn, improves blood circulation. So the muscles become relaxed, and heart health and cardiovascular functions vastly improve. Stretching also increases the circulation of new blood to the brain, improving your mood.
Music Music is a great way to calm down and improve your mood. It is a recognised form of therapy. The National Center for Biotechnology Information, conducted a psychosocial stress test on 60 healthy female volunteers in 2013. They were randomly assigned to one of three different conditions prior to the stress test—relaxing music, the sound of rippling water and rest without acoustic stimulation. The findings indicated that listening to music impacted the psychobiological stress system, and those who listened to relaxing music recovered from stress faster compared to the other groups. Laugh Laughter is the best medicine when it comes to reducing stress. A 2008 study by researchers at the American Physiological Society, investigating the interaction between the brain, behaviour and the immune system found that simply anticipating laughter boosted health protecting hormones and significantly brings down the levels of stress hormones. A hearty laugh will lighten your mood, increase your intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulate the heart, lungs and muscles and boost the endorphin levels released by the brain. It stimulates circulation and relaxes the muscles, reducing the physical symptoms of stress.Courtesy: FEMINA NOVEMBER 2018

5 things to do for a happy and healthy relationship
T
hose in a relationship always look for the right spark and those who are willing to be in a relationship, look for the right goal. It may take years for a relationship to turn into a ‘lived happily ever after’ story, but it takes only few minutes to break the walls and part ways off. So for those who are looking for tips to a healthy relationship, here are seven such things you can do to make your bond stronger. 1.Put mobiles away when you are together: Now day’s social networking happens mostly through mobile phones. Keep your mobiles and social networking tools like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp etc aside when you two are lazing around and spending quality time together. Mobile phones can bring a lot of distraction in communication. Forget the gadget world and indulge in some special talks. You will surely have a lot to share and lot to express to each other. 2. Spend less time in front of the television: It is good for couples to watch TV together, but spending too much time in front of the idiot box can shift your mind from other important things or the person next to you. When both of you are together at home, try to spend time together by sitting over a cup of tea/coffee, listening to music, engaging in romantic acts like cuddling and caressing each other, and making

vacation plans. 3. Explore your culinary skills together: Love can happen in kitchen! Try to cook a dish together as it will keep both of you engaged in the same act and in the same place for a long time. In the middle of cooking, share a warm hug and a gentle kiss to make the environment more romantic and not boring. Know each other’s food choices before heading for a cooking and dining date. 4. Sit together over tea in the morning: Sipping morning tea/ coffee together can do wonders to a relationship. Before you head for a busy day and hectic work schedule, spend some time together in the morning and keep yourself engaged in small talks. If time permits, have breakfast together and proceed for work like usual. Keep stress and worries away, and start your day on a good and romantic note. 5. Go for a vacation: Take short vacations to bring spark to your relation. Every time you may not get a long leave from work, so head for weekend getaways or short trips. Being together on a holiday away from daily chores rejuvenates you and takes togetherness a step higher. Enjoy adventure activates, plan romantic dinners, explore local life and have a pleasant vacation together.

Top 8 Health Benefits of Papaya Seeds
M
any of us love the sweet and succulent flesh of ripe papaya. The raw green version of it is usually cooked to prepare a variety of dishes. But what do you people do with the seeds of the fruit? If you are already wondering to see the title of this article (this is true for most of us, of course), you definitely throw them away. Well, do you know that these so-called non-edible seeds can offer multiple health benefits to us, if incorporated in daily diet in small amount? Let us take a look at them through this article. Here we go: Packed with Nutrition Fresh papaya seeds are highly nutritious. Several researches have revealed that they are loaded with nutrients like proteins and fats. While a cup of (1 ounce) papaya seeds acts as a good protein serving, it should also be taken in moderation at the same time due to its high level of fat content. They are also rich in micronutrients like magnesium, calcium and phosphorus. Improves Digestive Health Like the flesh of papaya, the seeds of the fruit also contain huge amount of digestive enzymes, especially papain. Being extremely potent, they can facilitate the activities of ‘good bacteria’ and enhance the functionalities of our gastrointestinal organs. Consequently, we get rid of various digestive issues. Detoxifies and Heals Liver Regular consumption of a small amount of papaya seeds can make our liver toxin-free, thereby perking up our overall health to a great extent. Apart from liver detoxification, they can also heal severely damaged liver in an efficient manner. Studies have proved that drinking crushed papaya seeds with one tablespoon of lemon juice twice daily can cure liver cirrhosis (shrinkage and hardening of liver due to excessive alcohol consumption) successfully within just a month. Averts Renal Diseases Fresh papaya seeds have immense positive effects on our kidneys. It has been found that these seeds are highly beneficial for kidney diseases that are associated with body poisoning. They not only help in treating various fatal kidney diseases efficiently, but also play a key role in preventing kidney failure. Keeps Cancer at Bay Intake of papaya seeds can even help our body fight against the rapid growth of cancerous tumors. Researchers have found the presence of certain immunomodulatory compounds in them, which are known to slow down the formation as well as development of cancerous cells and tumors. In fact, the isothiocyanate components of papaya seeds can help us stay away from breast cancer, blood cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer and prostate cancer. Courtesy: BEAUTYGLIMPSE

If you have done something wrong, seek apology, bring some small gifts for your better half and resolve the matter at the earliest. Even if you cannot forgive at times, just let it go. Start a new day on a new and good note, because that’s the way you can heal an ailing relation.Courtesy: Mid Day

Importance of Feng Shui Home Decor
W
hat is feng shui? A belief or pure science? Some say it’s a science while some say it’s just a mere belief. Well, I think it’s both, now take an example of a doctor, before visiting any doctor you need to believe in him or else how will you follow his guidelines. Coming back to feng shui, the basic problem is that we have no idea exactly what kind of science it is and honestly it is much deep-rooted than we think. Perhaps now we all know that feng shui is a kind of process that entirely affects your surroundings, and many homeowners think of buying these kinds of products. Tip 1: Make your mouth delightful: The entrance gate is more entrancing in order to attract all good opportunities and besides, it makes you so inspiring and fresh once you enter your space. From a fresh doormat to colorful pots of flowers, newly placed bulbs, etc can be done to enhance your entrance. Tip 2: Place your furnishings properly: Feng shui home decor always emphasizes on placing the living room furnishings in such a way that you can easily see the entrance exactly from where you are sitting or lying but make sure it’s not in the direct alignment. Apart from this get rid of those products where you can easily bump your head on or stub your toe as they are unsafe for you and your loved ones.

Tip 3: Keeping Living areas clean and decluttered We all are indirectly connected with the things that we own, so having lots and lots of stuff is not good. Always keep this in mind your home is the metaphor of your life, so keep your lives clean by keeping your living areas clean and de-cluttered. Tip 4: Buy always Feng Shui crystals or Himalayan salt crystals You can think of buying those rare feng shui crystals or Himalayan salt crystal
lamps or bookends made from crystal and place them near your living area or home entrance, outside or inside, etc. Tip 5: Re-arrangement of bed room space While re-arranging your bedroom space, always remember that bedrooms are passive in nature while office areas have to be active. So always make sure to keep your bedroom areas more relaxing that provides you a good night sleep. So this is it! These are some of the basic tips to consider while executing home decor.
