These funds help support the construction and establishment of these buildings; Mamta hopes to increase education and awareness in the community about many issues that are being faced by orphaned females in Punjab. SGT. JAG KHOSA “People have to see that there is high degree of complexity about BElonging to a gang. It’s a symptom not a problem.” (Greg Boyle)
A
s I was sitting inside a coffee shop reading a news story on a gang related shooting, I glance up and see Sergeant Jag Khosa, a Gang Intervention officer walks in. I quickly put down the newspaper and start walking towards him as my mind floods with millions of questions. Being a journalist, I have interviewed many public figures, but I have never felt so honored and eager to interview a gang investigator who not only believes in service above self but also implements this notion in his everyday life. We have lost so many young lives to gang violence which has deeply impacted our communities. The purpose of this interview with Sergeant Jag Khosa is to learn about his journey and vision as a gang intervention officer and to also educate our readers about various gang prevention and intervention methods so we can collectively save our youth from getting into this negative lifestyle and help those to get out who are already involved. Sergeant Jag Khosa has been involved in policing for the past 12 years in both B.C. and Alberta; and originally was member of the Organized Crime Agency of British Columbia (OCABC) in 2005, before joining the Edmonton Police Service. He came back to OCABC in 2011.

MARCH 2018
As an OCABC police officer, working within the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit-BC (CFSEU). Sergeant Khosa has been a part of many investigations related to homicides, international drug and weapon trafficking, and other activities of organized crime groups in order to disrupt and suppress gangs and organized crime groups across Canada. In 2016, Sergeant Khosa transitioned into the role of a Gang Intervention officer for CFSEU-BC’s (BC’s Anti- Gang Police). Sergeant Khosa is working on putting a greater emphasis in raising gang awareness in the community by educating parents and youth with knowledge and arming them with the appropriate skills to make our communities a safer place. He believes that it is imperative to spread the message that we as a community can take an active role starting at the preventative stage and no one has to fight this battle alone. Tell us a bit about the Combined Forces Special Forces Unit-BC? The Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia is British Columbia’s “Integrated Anti-Gang Police Agency”. The CFSEU-BC is the largest integrated police program in Canada, made up of members from every police department
in B.C., including the RCMP, and are the third largest police ‘force’ in the province with over 400 officers. The CFSEU-BC’s mandate is to target, investigate, prosecute, disrupt, and dismantle the organized crime groups and individuals that pose the highest risk to public safety due to their involvement in gang violence. In 2016 you transitioned into the role of Gang Intervention Officer for the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit-BC (CFSEU-BC). What are the tasks associated with this role? This has been the most exciting, challenging and rewarding role in my career thus far. As CFSEU-BC’s Gang Intervention Officer, I am responsible for providing a combination of community engagement and prevention through gang outreach and proactive intervention across British Columbia. Using highly developed skills in problem solving and mediation, the Gang Intervention Team works to better understand the key determinates of gang violence and works with both internal CFSEU-BC stakeholders and external law enforcement and community partners to develop and implement community mobilization, prevention, disruption, and focussed deterrence strategies. The team has the unique ability to identify and inter-
vene in gang-related conflicts before they amplify. If a shooting has occurred, we have the capacity to engage with operational and investigative units, both within the CFSEUBC and the respective agency, to participate in community engagement, focussed deterrence, and investigative strategies. Our team consists of subject matter experts in conflict mediation and utilize restorative justice techniques to build trust, end gang conflicts, and achieve mutually satisfactory resolutions that are long lasting. Similar to other police collaborations, this role works hand-in-glove with gang investigators and provide assessments, follow-up, and emergency gang intervention to those in need. What are the challenges you face as a Gang Intervention Officer? How do you deal with them? Any new initiatives come with growing pain. CFSEU-BC’s gang intervention initiative is first of its kind in Canada. In its infancy stage we were faced with challenges such as, a gap between the community and the police. Parents were generally afraid of a stigma, which prevented them from contacting us to seek help for their gang involved kids. However, with our continued community based initiatives and enhanced

outreach by the Gang Intervention Team, this gap started to narrow down. I must say that the “code of silence” is starting to diminish as more and more parents are contacting us for help. Despite various forums, interventions and outreach programs organized all around the province, the gang scene still remains existent. What is the reason for this? Measuring prevention and awareness related results have always been tricky. We are doing everything we can to curb the ongoing gang violence on our streets while focusing on long term solutions to this problem. Under CFSEU-BC’s End Gang Life campaign, we continue to educate our youth and parents on dangers of gang lifestyle. To break the cycle of violence, we must focus on prevention. The work we are doing today will show results in coming years. On the enforcement side, CFSEUBC’s mandate is to Target, investigate, prosecute, and disrupt and dismantle the organized crime groups and individuals that pose the highest risk to public safety due to gang violence. Keeping in line with our mandate, we have had many significant successful investigations resulting in seizure of illegal firearms and arrests of high profile gangsters. How can parents, family members and the community help a child stay away from this dangerous, short-lived lifestyle? I strongly suggest parents keep informed of their children’s daily activities, whether it is school or work. Time and time again, children commonly lie about their jobs to their parents. We have come across many cases where drug runners tell their parents that they are helping with their friend’s family business or that they work as a security guard to explain their absence during the day or most of the night. The excuses are endless, but the reality can become quickly obvious if you pay attention as a parent. One indicator that your child may be generating income from an illegal source is unexplained cash. If you witness your child carrying unexplained cash or find bundles of money in your home, it is in your best interest to ask where it came from. I am not encouraging parents to become suspicious of their child’s every action or spy on them. Parents also need to trust their children and provide space as necessary during their teenage years so they grow into confident and independent adults. However, it is very important and critical to know your child’s network is and the type of activities or work that they engage in. The ideal way to become aware of various aspects of your child’s life is not to dedicate your time to keeping tabs on what they are doing, but rather letting them come to you, showing them support, and engaging in positive two-way communica-

tion. Trust is an essential factor that leads to open communication. It is important to make your child feel safe and important. An active role and awareness is importantto prevent your child from falling prey to the lures of gangs and organized crime. As for the community’s role, I strongly suggest that we should all play a positive role in every kid’s life. Community support groups should offer services that involve youth in a positive and healthy activities in their spare time. It is an old saying that it takes a village to raise a child and this saying applies to today’s day and age as well. What tempts youngsters to join gangs? Our research shows that although money, greed, power, peer pressure and pseudo self-respect pushes youth into Gang Life, these are not the only reasons why kids choose to lead a high risk lifestyle.
/saentertainmentnewsmagazine
Lately, we have been digging even deeper and seeing trauma being a leading cause of youth leaning towards gang life. Youth traumatized by childhood abuse or witnessing negative environment at home tend to join gangs to seek comfort elsewhere. In my experience dealing with youth, I found they could not see or foresee any danger associated with selling drugs. In their minds, being gang members, they held the power and maintained autonomy by carrying cell phones, having their own mode of transportation and by making a quick buck. They often appeared ignorant and oblivious to the fact that in business of gangs and drug trade, the individuals involved are often betrayed and setup by their own friends or eliminated by rival gang members in execution style shootings. Is there a solution to these problems and what are the first steps a parent/family member should take if their child shows signs of being involved in a gang or taking the wrong path? Prevention, education and awareness is the key to prevent our next generation from getting into gangs. Enforcement also plays a huge role in holding those accountable who pose the highest risk to public safety. However, if we could educate the parents and the young kids about dangers of gang lifestyle that would go long ways in preventing kids from making poor choices. Parents need to educate themselves on the early signs of gang or drug involvement. Once you determine your child may be involved in such criminal activities, the parent or a family member should seek help immediately rather than waiting until it is too late. Lot of parents feel that by admitting their kid’s involvement in gangs would bring their family name in disrepute. We need to step out of the comfort zone and reach out to those who are in a position to offer help. Any parent who is facing

such issues, can reach our Gang Intervention Team at 604-897-6023. What would you like to say to those who are currently involved in gang lifestyle? On the surface it might look easy to join a gang but what are often forgotten or ignored are some of the realities associated to gang life. About 20% of all murders in British Columbia are gang-related and stats show that the average gang member who dies doesn’t reach 25 years old. I would like to encourage these misguided youths to exit gang life before it’s too late. Often times, gang members recruit young kids by selling them lies and once these kids become part of a gang, they start to feel that there is no way out. The realities of gang life are harsh however, there is always a way out. If you wish to exit this negative lifestyle, you can contact our Gang Exiting Team at 604-897-6023. s I entered the premises of the OpenBox showroom in Surrey, I was welcomed by Mr. Albert Tsui and Mr. Rob Watts. Both founders and joint owners of the business. While walking through and exploring this spic and span store, getting lost perusing the products displayed in an enticing manner, I was eventually showed into a meeting room to have a sit down and a chat with Albert and Rob to discuss OpenBox’s past, present and future. During our conversations, Albert informed me that he has been working in this industry since he was just 18 years young and as such, understands the pulse of this industry and therefore is the ideal candidate to be running a business such as OpenBox.ca. He hastened to add that “… as people are always going to want best value for their money but without compromising on the quality of the product, as a business, OpenBox has a meaningful role to play. We’re proud to have been filling this need and requirement in modern society for the last 25 years and can’t wait to see what the next 25 will hold!”. He continued “Since our products are from top brands such as Sony, Apple and Samsung – most with a one year warranty – our customers are always delighted and confident purchasing these sometimes high value items from a name they trust.” Sinise the first physical store opened in Surrey way back in 2005, OpenBox

You will, no doubt, be seeing a lot more of the OpenBox online shop in the not too distant future.” As well as the exciting new online store, there is also plans to expand their showroom portfolio with a new stores on Vancouver Island and in Victoria. So next time your home is in need of a bit of an upgrade, don’t forget to pop in, call or go online to see how OpenBox can help you. You won’t be disappointed.

When I asked Rob for their formula of success, he quipped,”100% dedication and wanting to go the extra mile for our staff and customers is the key.” He then
went on to say that “Being an owner of a business is a huge responsibility to the people that make the business work – be it the staff or customers - and I take this very seriously and am committed to them. Also, the fact that we’re usually 20% – 60% cheaper than most other places is a great USP (unique selling point) that, along with great customer service, brings our customers back again and again.” We then went on to talk about where Albert and Rob see the business going forward and I asked where they see the business in 10 years. It became apparent they were gearing up for a bit of a change of direction with regards to their selling platforms; “We have always supplied the best TV’s, laptops, tablets, cellphones, audio systems, small home appliances and everything in-between at the best prices but we wanted to reach out beyond the vicinity of our showrooms, that’s why we’re starting to implement

Shaheed Diwas March 23rd Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev were hanged on March 23
86 years ago, on March 23 in 1931, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Hari Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar were hanged by the British for their alleged involvement in the killing of John Saunders. The day is also celebrated as Shaheed Diwas or Martyr’s Day. They sacrificed their lives for the independence of India but their inspiring actions continued to stir the desire for freedom until it was achieved in 1947. To respect the trio’s martyrdom, the Border Security Force has decided to put on display the pistol used by the freedom fighter Singh to shoot John Saunders in 1928. The semiautomatic 32-bore Colt-make pistol has been put on display at the School of Weapon Central School of Weapons and Tactics museum. In Pakistan, the Lahore high court directed the security forces to ensure security for those who want to observe martyrdom day of Indian freedom fighters Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev on March 23. SMART PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE and insurance agents. Have a will and keep it updated It is vital that you should have a will in which you will designate your executors, guardians and trustees. Keep the document in a fairly obvious place so that your executor may locate it when required. It is better if you keep it in a sealed envelope labelled with your name and ‘Will’. It should then be placed in a fireproof place such as a file cabinet or home safe.

ife is transitory/uncertain. We don’t know what future has in store for us. It’s important that we make our family secure by taking necessary steps for our family after we cease to exist. This will ensure that our loved ones are protected from financial and legal problems during the time/emergence of any unforeseeable circumstance. By taking below mentioned necessary steps, we can get our affairs in order. Have life insurance, disability insurance and critical illness insurance Purchase adequate life insurance policy which may save your family from any financial crisis even if you are not there to protect them. Also, if you are working in a field involving physical risk, it is essential that you purchase coverage for disability insurance. In addition, critical illness insurance protects you against 25 life-threatening diseases. To understand your requirements, it is vital that you seek the help of a qualified insurance professional from Punjab Insurance Agency Inc. Always keep your address and phone number updated. This will enable various financial institutions/other agencies to be in constant touch with you. In a country like Canada, we all know that the place of residence is usually not stable. Most people move to different places and change their contact number accordingly. If by chance, the insurance premium cannot be deducted from your bank account due to non-sufficient funds or any kind of technical reason/ error, in order to keep your policy active, there is a grace period. After the grace period, your policy becomes voided and necessary steps need to be

taken to reinstate it. In this situation, it is very essential that the insurance company and insurance agent should be able to reach you in a timely manner. It will be possible only if they have your updated address, contact number and email. Always keep your contact details updated. If the mortgage amount changes, you can change the mortgage insurance You can change the amount of mortgage insurance if the mortgage amount changes. We usually tend to upgrade our house with the passage of time. If you upgrade your house, then the mortgage amount also needs to be updated. You may need to adjust your mortgage insurance accordingly. It is suggested to stay in touch with your Insurance Advisor on annual basis, who is local to you. Always check your insurance regularly for your designated beneficiary Your family composition may change with the passage of time. The unmarried individuals get married in future and may want to designate their spouse or children as their beneficiary while those already married may have added new family members. Also, a divorce may lead to other changes. Thus, you may want to modify the beneficiary in the insurance policy. Always keep the beneficiary information updated by regularly monitoring your policy. Keep your insurance updated for any

change in your medical condition It is vital that you must keep a close check over your health for any emerging major health issue. If you experience any such health issue, to cover the corresponding risks, you may want to convert your term coverage to permanent coverage so that you are protected during times of need. In case of any unforeseeable deterioration in your medical condition/health, the document becomes even more vital for you. You should always keep your insurance policy in a secure place. Because, due to deterioration of health, the chances of getting a new policy would become even bleaker. Specify where important financial and non-financial information is located Always keep a list of your financial documents such as bank account numbers, savings and retirement plans, insurance policies, mortgage, college funding plans and non-financial information such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, property papers, passports, jewellery etc. It should then be placed in a fireproof place such as a file cabinet, bank safe, home safe etc. Prepare a list of professionals who help you manage your financial and legal matters such as accountant, lawyer,
Have a health care directive You write this directive in advance to specify your preference for treatment decisions that should be followed in case you are unable to give directions for the same. This document is also known as a ‘living will’. In a country like Canada, where we are seeing increasing instances of people with psychological problems, to ensure proper treatment during any unforeseeable illness, you must have a health care directive. Make arrangements for final rites such as burial/cremation and donation of organs. In this manner, you will bring a ray of light in somebody’s life and will pass over your legacy to future generations. By undertaking such simple measures, you will be able to ensure the well being of your loved ones even when you are not around to fulfil their needs. As an independent insurance advisor working through Punjab Insurance Agency, I deal with different insurance companies offering plans for different types of insurance. I can explain to you in detail, various insurance plan options and coverage that are suitable for your needs and resources. omi Adajania will be directing the sequel to Hindi Medium with actor Irrfan Khan playing the lead. The filmmaker says the film’s story is very “amusing yet emotional”. The news of Adajania getting on board to direct the quirky franchise comedy for Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock films banner was announced in Feb. “I ambled into Dinoo’s (Vijan) room and he was sitting down to a narration. I had enjoyed the first one (‘Hindi Medium’) and the way these writers have taken the narrative forward is very clever,” Adajania said in a statement. “So yeah, I pretty much gate-crashed the narration and it was so engaging and hilarious that I told him I’d be happy to direct it if he had no director attached to the project. It’s been a while since I’ve found
any material so amusing yet emotional,” he added. While Irrfan has come on board for the sequel, there is no word on Qamar getting back for the second part. About roping in Adajania for the sequel, Vijan said: “Homi doesn’t make films very often as he refuses to do stuff that doesn’t bowl him over. But when I narrated this one to him, he loved it. And when I saw his reaction, it was a nobrainer. I guess from Maddock’s stable of directors, Homi was the most unlikely choice for Hindi Medium 2 and that’s exactly I have signed him on.” Hindi Medium 2 story will be flash-forward by a decade and will narrate the story of Irrfan’s character Raj. Aamir Khan’s
Secret Superstar crosses Rs 750 crore mark in China
S
tarring Aamir Khan and Zaira Wasim, Secret Superstar earned Rs 63.40 crore in India, which is superb for a film catering to a niche audience (as opposed to Dangal that was more universal). But overseas, well, Secret Superstar is unleashing absolute mayhem at the Chinese box office. At last count, the film has accumulated Rs 117.61 million dollars, which translates to Rs 750.69 crore. Aamir Khan, clearly, has become a huge star in China. His Dangal too dominated the Chinese box office. It ended its theatrical run around 190 million dollars. If Secret Superstar’s performance continues, it would not take it long to overtake Dangal. Currently, Dangal is the

most successful Indian film in overseas markets. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh posted the figures. “#SecretSuperstar is truly a BLOCKBUSTER of EPIC PROPORTIONS in China… Crosses 750 cr mark in 4 weeks… Still going STRONG… Total till 15 Feb 2018: $ 117.61 mn 750.69 cr].” What explains the popularity of Aamir Khan’s films in China? China is generally the most important overseas market for most Hollywood films that are getting a wide release due to a large number of moviegoers. Traditionally, too, Aamir Khan films have done well in China. But what his most recent films, Dangal and Secret Superstar, have done – is unprecedented. Courtesy: INDIAN EXPRESS

We should be ready to roll the movie next year, after Salman finishes all his current films. Kick 2 will release on Christmas 2019. Once I finish penning the script, I’ll be completely sure. But at present, she’s (Jacqueline) there in what I’m writing. But it’s too early to talk about it.” It may be recalled that Jacqueline’s career took a kick-start after Kick. Emma Watson donates 1mn pound to fund victims of sexual harassment
A
ctor Emma Watson has donated one million pounds to a new campaign directed at helping victims of sexual harassment. The 27-year-old actor has contributed the whopping amount to the UK Justice and Equality Fund after nearly 200 female British and Irish stars signed an open letter calling for an end to sexual harassment in the workplace, The Independent reported. Watson is one of the first donors to the campaign, which was set up by the 190 women who signed the open letter, which was published in The Observer. Actors such as Emma Thompson, Carey Mulligan, Saoirse Ronan, Gemma Chan and Keira Knightley, along with a group of 160 academics, activists and charity workers have also signed the letter. The letter comes ahead of the upcoming BAFTA awards ceremony, calling it an occasion to “celebrate this tremendous moment of solidarity and unity
across borders by coming together and making this movement international”. “This movement is bigger than just a change in our industry alone. In the very near past, we lived in a world where sexual harassment was an uncomfortable joke; an unavoidable awkward part of being a girl or a woman. If you have said ‘time’s up’, if the stories you have read in the papers have resonated and distressed you - join us in shifting the dial. Let’s make 2018 the year that time was up on sexual harassment and abuse. This is your moment too,” it further reads. Courtesy: PTI

Pairing makeup with hair colour
H
ave you ever noticed that sometimes, no matter what sort of make-up you apply, it just doesn’t complement your look. The next time you blame it on the dress you are wearing or the colours that you have chosen for yourself, wait! If you have coloured hair, it is equally crucial for you to select a make-up base and shade that suits your hair hue. Take a cue from here. Nude make-up for brown hair Dark brown hair is said to frame the face, creating a gorgeous canvas for bolder hues. Those with brown hair or brunettes need to consider some basic make-up like a lip gloss or a mascara to balance your complexion against your hair. Make sure that you define your eyebrows as well. Remember the deeper your hair tone, is the more washed out the complexion will appear. Brown hair tones are supposed to lend themselves well to peach, bronze and other warm neutrals for cheeks as well as eyes. Use a golden bronzer to warm up your complexion. Opt for a metallic cream-based eye shadow to make your eyes stand out. As for your lips, you can add colour to your face with a soft coral or apricot hue. Dark shade of lipstick for burgundy hair Those with burgundy or a reddish tinge to their hair, should ideally select make-up in shades of maroon or brown. Says make-up professional Amyn Manji, “You can highlight your eyes with light or sparkling greens. As for your cheeks and lips, something like a dark shade of maroon, mauve or brown will complement your skin.” A rosy cream blush will also make your cheeks look natural, while adding a hint of colour. Earthy shades for light brown hair or natural coloured hair Women with light brown hair can play with a wide range of colours. These shades include earthy neutrals to bold, juicy shades of berry, coral and pink. However, you also have to pay close attention to the base that you are planning to use. Meghna Butani, make-up professional, says, “Check your skin tone and the colour of your hair. If they are similar, opt for lipstick shades in pink or coral. You can define your eyes with beige, gray or blue eye shadows. As for your cheeks, apply a tawny or pink blush along your cheekbones and you are ready to make heads turn.” Courtsey:TNN

5 beauty hacks that every girl should know
I
f you think staying beautiful takes a lot of effort, then you need to read this. All it takes to look beautiful are some simple hacks and if you’re wondering what are they, here’s help. We bring to you, 5 super easy hacks that every girl ought to know. Shave with hair conditioner Can never get a smooth shave with a lady’s razor? Guess you are doing it all wrong. Drop the idea of buying a men’s shaving foam, instead, invest in a hair conditioner. If you have a spare one lying in the closet, even better! Yes, a hair conditioner will make the hair on your body softer, thereby making shaving easier. Baking soda for pearly whites You might go wrong with your make-up and that can be corrected, but yellow teeth is an instant put off. And, the easiest way to deal with stained teeth is a mixture of baking soda. Well yes, you can finally bid goodbye to expensive toothpastes and instead make a mixture of one tablespoon of baking soda mixed with 2-3 drops of hydrogen peroxide. Now, use this paste as a toothpaste and you will certainly happy with the result. Honey face pack for pimples ‘Have a party to attend, will get a pimple on the eve’ seems to be the norm every time. But the best way to deal with this evergreen pimple problem is honey. Honey has the best antibacterial properties and applying it regularly on the face will not only help you in getting rid of the acne but also ensure they don’t come back, ever. Rice as a conditioner It’s time to dump that hair conditioner! Try using leftover rice water to rinse your hair after shampooing and let it sit on your head for 5 minutes. Rinse the rice water out and you’ll be surprised at the result - shiny and stronger hair. The magical petroleum jelly Don’t know how to get that natural glow on your face? Well, all you have to do is grab hold of some petroleum jelly and dab a little on your cheeks right before you venture out of your house. Now, wait for all the compliments to flow. Courtsey: TNN

A Girl in a Whirl Contd. from previous issue (Part 19) I took some time to understand why she had a laugh. My mom-inlaw was also there. I felt very much embarrassed. “Look, how her face has blushed.”, Daljit commented and I didn’t find any words to say. “Shall I help you?”, I asked after a pause of thinking. “It’s alright; relax for two-three days. You gotta work all your life”, Daljit said. “Shall I set my clothes then?”, I asked and my mom-in-law allowed me with a closed mouth yes, and I went to my room. My mom-in-law was not cool with me. I was setting my bed and I remembered that I was to put the charm under Sam’s pillow. I was double minded. I didn’t find any need of the charm. “Everything was going fine. But why was my mom-in-law rude with me? If Sam stopped drinking, how nice it would be! If I threw away that charm and there came a problem again, then what? I’d tell a lie to the pandit. Then the pandit would ask for more money. It’d be better of completing the treatment. But where shall I put it? If anybody saw, what would I say? Let me hide this in Sam’s pillow. Yes, this is a good idea!”, lost in my thoughts, I finally decided. I locked the door from inside and hid the charm inside Sam’s pillow. Then I unlocked the door. I began setting my clothes. “Sonia, shall I help you?”, Daljit, standing behind me, asked.

I couldn’t even sense when my jethani came and stood behind me so quietly. My train of thoughts was broken and I felt utterly nervous. I controlled myself and replied. “No sister, it’s ok. Have a seat. When did you come?” “Look, you have turned as white as if a thief is caught red-handed.”, Daljit said “Had my mother-in-law sent her to spy on me to see what I was doing or she herself was doing so?”, I wondered “No bhabi, I was just…!”, I didn’t find anything to say. “Look! You got serious. I thought of helping you in setting your clothes. And I will also have some chat with you.”, Daljit said. “Sure bhabi; why not? It’s better you have come. I was unable to decide alone where to start first?”, I responded to Daljit. “It seems hard in the beginning, then everything becomes fine byand-by.”, Daljit said humorously. “Bhabi, you are so smart to comment.”, I said shyly. “Just wait, you’ll also be the same.”, Daljit again outsmarted me. “Bhabi, you are always being very naughty. I don’t know what to talk to you.”, I said. Daljit and I kept talking about our families and setting my raiment. Sam and I had dinner at relatives’ homes almost every day. Sam had some alcohol daily. I was trying to tolerate his drinking. I was planning to ask Sam sometime to quit this habit. Sam had his day off on Sunday. Sam was to take me

shopping and sightseeing first time. Beautiful Vancouver It rained almost the whole week, but Sunday was a beautiful day. We had breakfast and left home in our car around 11 A.M. We went to the Stanley Park first. We had a beach-walk there. Then we had lunch in a restaurant. Then we visited some stores. I bought a fancy jacket and knee-high, highheel shoes. We went to North Vancouver by a ferry. Beautiful and Blue ocean tides, pretty pleasant blue sky, and scattered-whitemilky clouds seemed to me like a wonderful movie scene. I was extremely happy. Sharp looking English and Chinese people were enjoying themselves. I bought two artificial neck-chains, and earrings. Sam bought me lovely sunglasses. I looked even more gorgeous with those on. Sam clicked several pictures of mine. We asked a stranger to click our pictures on our Iphone. I was also recalling Shimla, but I ignored my past keeping my dad’s advice in mind for my better present as well as bright future of my family members. We visited the Metro Town Mall on the way back home. We had coffee and snacks in the food-court. Sam showed me the passing-by sky train. He told that the sky-train runs without a driver. I couldn’t believe that. Sam bought two tickets of the sky train. Sam had me sit on the very front seat. I was astonished to see how train was running and stopping automatically. Contd. in next issue

5 Tips for Raising a Happy Child
Love Murray says that bringing up happy, optimistic children begins with loving parents who demonstrate love for each other and for their children. “This makes kids feel safe and is the foundation of their happiness,” Murray says. Tell your kids every day how much you love them. Be affectionate and free with your hugs, and encourage your kids to share their emotions too. Time Offering your time is another way of showing love. “Kids need time with parents,” Murray adds. “Initially this is mom’s time, but later on, both parents. The kids who grow up the most secure are those who have been given
34
MARCH 2018
the most parental time.” It can be something simple like having a daily or weekly tradition like reading a bedtime story or going to get ice cream. Every parent is busy and the little tasks in life can seem overwhelming, but it’s important to set aside time every day for each of your kids. Rights “Understanding the difference between their rights and their privileges” is essential to creating a happy child, says Sherkat. “Children should always feel that their loved ones would protect their rights. And a ‘happy kid’ is one who is taught that privileges are always earned. This goes a long way in one, motivating kids, two, teaching
responsibility and, three, teaching selfregulation.” Nature Believe it or not, when your mother told you to play outside, she knew exactly what she was talking about. Dr. Murray suggests giving children as much time in nature as possible. Fresh air and physical activity clear the mind and can invigorate a child’s spirit. In addition, having plants in the home raises the level of happiness and contributes to a speedier recovery from illness. “Pets also are a source of happiness and optimism,” Murray says -- so think about indulging your child’s pleas for a puppy. Structure
Children expect some level of routine and structure from their environment. “This creates a great sense of security and stability in kids, and that is very important for healthy emotional growth,” states Sherkat. Setting boundaries is a key factor in creating that structure. “Be clear about your boundaries and lay down clear and consistent rules which both parents agree on,” says Murrary. “Don’t allow a child to play one parent against the other -- this is especially true of divorced or separated parents. A child’s sense of safety is knowing that his or her parents are in control.” Courtsey: care.com

Sri Yoga Hanuman Temple 13415 Comber Way, Surrey BC V3W 5V8
A ‘must-visit’ religious place -Right here in Surrey BC! By N Bala B.Engg. (Mech) MBA CAIIB
T
his religious praying place is nonpareil and immensely unique in the whole of North America. It is not a hyperbole! What strikes the most is its astounding huge sized idol of Lord Hanuman made of pure black marble, signifying and displaying the power and beauty of divine source; and draws at the very first sight awe of admiration and thaws anyone’s mind in reverence, even the non-believing ones! Who is Lord Hauman? In Hindu mythology, there are said to be a group of Ashta-Chiranjeevis (Eight ‘Immortals’, Chiran- Long, and JeeviLiving). These eight immortals are said to still live even today on the Earth in flesh and blood today, for various different reasons. Specifically, Chiranjeevis are those born humans, who are blessed with extremely long life. Lord Hanuman is the most important of all the eight immortals, others being Markandeya, Bali Chakravarthi, Kripacharya, Parashurama, Vibhishana, Vyasa and Ashwasthama. Lord Hanuman was born to Kesari aka Vayu (father) and Anjana (mother). The legend goes that, Anjanawas an angel, who was born on earth as a Vanara (person living in forest) princess and married Kesari, a Vanara chief. Vayu, God of the wind, carried the divine power of Lord Shiva to Anjana’s womb, and thus Lord Hanuman was born as an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Lord Hauman is also known, among various other names, as Sri Anjaneya for the reason that he is the dear child of Anjana (neya meaning dear). Lord Hanuman is also known as Vayu Putra or Pawan Putra or Pawan Kumar - all meaning the son (Putra or Kumar) of Vayu or Pawan (the wind).

Lord Hanuman is an ardent devotee of Lord Rama and one of the central characters in the various versions of the epic Ramayana found in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Lord Hanuman is the embodiment of Love, Knowledge, Devotion, Courage, Valour, Righteousness, selflessness and Strength. Coming back to Sri Yoga Hanuman temple in Surrey BC Canada, I have visited many Hanuman temples since my childhood days as I hail from Madurai - Tamil Nadu, India aka ‘City of Temples’ and this Lord Hanuman temple in Surrey is easily the best! There are many huge sized idols of Gods and Goddesses else where but they are all in a standing posture. Here in this temple, astonishingly huge sized - about 3 stories tall - main deity Lord Hanuman is in a unique yogic sitting posture which enchants every one at every look! A great assemblage of various Gods and Goddesses adds an inexplicable charm and charisma to the already divine ambience! On every visit, one gets to experience inexpressible exuberance and vibrating positiveness, pervading all through the temple! Adding to the ever-exuding divinity all over within the temple are the programs the Head Priest Sri Ram Shakthi Bhattar conducts every day morning and evening. Sri Bhattar is also the
Founder and Chairman of Yoga Hanuman Cultural Society. Typically, programs include chanting prayers, singing hymns and delivering discourses by Sri Bhattar. He has a profound knowledge of Vedas and puranas and the ability to carry on with the proceedings, quite adeptly. Sri Bhattar is the Master of Ceremonies and comperes all the praying sessions. He is an erudite scholar in the world of music and he has mastered music. He has an excellent wealth of knowledge of everything about music. He is a professional singer and has released devotional audio CDs to his credit. All these CDs have outstanding rendition of religious subjects. Sri Bhattar involves the participants bone deep and mesmerizes with his excellent quicksilver memory quoting from various verses and texts with his unique style! His delivery - say - speeches or songs - is awesome with his clear and resounding voice laced with occasional humour. Attending every session of his is like undergoing heavenly feeling and experience! One is strongly advised to partake and experience first-hand and for real! At the end of the proceedings, we are served with a sumptuous ‘prasad’, (preetibhojan) totally prepared in-house by the family of Sri Bhattar and it tastes amazing! The number of devotees visiting this temple is
increasing by leaps and bounds for obvious reasons. Resultantly, the space of the praying hall is provinginsufficient with every day passing! What is really needed is the support to this temple to grow in size and popularity by any means cash or kind - for the sheer benefit it brings to the entire society! Every visit (is nothing but a sort of a group therapy and purifies the minds, which are otherwise polluted and battered by having countless worries, chasing unfulfilled wishes, dreams and desires) brings peace and tranquility! When we support schools for education, hospitals for health, cinema halls for entertainment, then why not this sacred place which gives so much mental relief. Though all religious places belong to an omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent God, who is One, yet the devotees in their recent reviews have rated this temple at the top of the rung among the temples in whole of BC! Please see the table. Saturdays are the days, devotees never miss in any given week! A visit at least once a week to Sri Yoga Hanuman temple keeps the mind refined, refreshed and recharged with enough strength to face the out side world! No wonder, Sri Yoga Hanuman temple is visited alike by people from many religions, many races and many nationalities! Sri Yoga Hanuman Temple is the place for your spiritual growth. Devotees of Lord Hanuman need not undergo arduous penance and complicated ritualistic practices to realize God. This can be best achieved through prayers, devotional singing, meditation and self-less service to mankind. Sri Yoga Hanuman Temple is one such sacred meeting place for the community to assemble and derive excellent benefits. All the religious prayers and procedures are performed by the very learned Head priest of this temple Pandit Sri Bhattar. Pay a visit once and you are sure to repeat often!

How Much Sugar Should We Eat Per Day … Part 2 Human beings are the only mammals, always keen enough- for the sake of taste- to process their own food, and the only ones- unwise enough- to eat it towards untimely sickness. The major driver of the Diabetes and obesity pandemic is processed food. Whether we are Diabetic or not, eating too many carbohydrates is the worst thing we can do for our health.
Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Diabetes Coach of University of Victoria
Continued from February issue. NOW the Zillion-Dollar question is to follow the right process while selecting/ choosing our food intake and its timings during the day. There are four main components that influence glucose/sugar in our blood: Diet Healthy vs. Unhealthy: Though food products get the Government approval from to time, yet many of the additives and preservatives contained in them, unfortunately, have not been extensively tested. Sadly, in some cases, we don’t know the interactions of using a number of additives and preservatives together. We also don’t know the total bad effects of these on the human body. We have to always remember that the manufacturers of these products have one thing in mind i.e. to increase the shelf life of their products so that they can sell all of them to the ultimate consumer. HEALTHY DIET IS GENUINE FOOD: All natural, unprocessed i.e. no sugar added or loaded is the stuff we need to eat. Our ancestors used to eat this. The wise thing is to use whole natural unprocessed foods that constitute a healthy diet, while processed packaged foods should make up a minimum [ less than 20%] per day, if you cannot resist. At present, being busy with work outside the home, we’ve definitely lost our way and become too dependent on packaged and processed foods. Even foods we might think
One heart attack happens every 7 minutes in Canada. Close your eyes and think for a minute for possible reasons. So, it’s up to us to take charge and be in control of our own diet, nutrition, exercise and active life style, which is clearly one of the main reason for our suffering

are healthy, often are not. As per Dr. Robert Lustig MD USA out of circa 600000 products, we buy daily, 77% are repackaged or processed; i.e. being heated, processed with sugar [added or loaded]. Due to this, they lose their natural nutritional advantage. Manufacturers remove fat from the food based on Framingham Study and when it becomes tasteless they add sugar and have made us addicted to sugar. UNHEALTHY DIET IS Sick FOOD: Packaged and processed foods full of sugar, refined carbs, additives, preservatives, isolated food chemicals come under this category. When we change our diet from sick food to real food, then sugar intake gets controlled naturally and surely. Milk being pasteurized before packing by the manufacturer [i.e. heated and processed] may not contain the macronutrients as exhibited on the labels. Use milk products in moderation. Home made Yogurt is better than milk. Unsweetened Greek Yogurt another good choice. Read labels carefully before you buy. Daily people get befooled when doing shopping. God has created our bodies as alkaline. He bestowed us with most of fruits, and vegetables which are alkaline in nature. By processing these gifts of God, we make them acidic and then consume it. This is the reason why people are suffering with Digestive System problems and Endocrine system problems. Let me add Heart, Liver and Lung problems too, otherwise you may get uncomfortable on this. So, when we eat natural, real foods, the way nature intended us to, then we stay healthy. Then we experience less inflammation, more insulin sensitivity, stable blood sugar, no cancer, no brain stroke no heart problem, more energy and better overall health. This happens because your entire metabolic function begins to reverse.
You’re providing right fuel to your bodies cells in the way of real food – vitamins, minerals, fiber, phytochemicals, and compounds that help your body function like it should. MACRONUTRIENTS: It is a substance required in relatively large amounts by living organisms, in particular. It is in various type of foods (e.g., fat, protein, carbohydrate). That is why we need them in large amounts in our diet. Out of this, one major thing that influences our blood sugar and A1C levels is Carbohydrates. When you eat carbohydrates, this causes our blood sugar to rise and then insulin released from pancreas rush to respond to this sugar in the blood and get it transferred to various cells of the body, so that blood sugar level is restored back on the rails of normalcy in 2 hours. Kindly refer to Table 1 that shows how macronutrients affect blood glucose. Blood sugar does get affected when you eat protein, but not to the extent that carbohydrates affect the response. And as for fats, well they do not spike blood sugar or insulin at all!Effect of Carbohydrates, Protein and Fat on our blood sugar Researchers agree that the first approach to stable blood sugar and HbA1C is to restrict carbohydrate intake. See the influence that carbohydrates have on your blood sugar in that Table 1 again. Now, beyond an iota of doubt, it makes perfect sense that if you reduce carbohydrates you won’t be getting those big glucose spikes. HbA1C Test If you don’t know what HbA1C is, it’s an average measure (given in %) of glucose in your bloodstream over the previous 90-day period. For healthy people 6% is the benchmark. For Diabetic people 7% is benchmark, though lower is better. Lab results are also skewed/ deviated to the extent of 15% in many cases. This is
what the manufacturers of these lab test machines say. Does Diabetic people live longer than others? Does Diabetic people live longer than others [ non-diabetic], who follow a daily regimen of Diet, Exercise and Medicine. Your food is your medicine. If you are eating junk food more than 20% per diem, maybe it will adversely affect your life span. HbA1c should be taken exactly on 90th day. Why? Glucose/sugar attaches to a protein in our red blood cells in a process called glycosylation. The average red blood cell lives for around 3 months, so when they are doing this blood test they are testing glycated hemoglobin (blood). If we go for this test after say 100 days, then many old Red Blood Cells will die and new ones will be their and it will affect the results. It will show, incorrect. though better results and better control on blood sugar. Diabetes is a blessing in disguise. Though, it’s challenging but it does force you to get and stay motivated to look after your health and that’s a good thing. To help control blood sugar naturally you need to stabilise your glucose levels in the blood. This will lower insulin production by beta cells in the Pancreas, and increase your cells’ insulin sensitivity Not all calories are created equal: We hear it time and time again, over the years , that we need to reduce our calories and eat low fat to lose weight and stay healthy. But this is a myth because not all calories are created equal. 1000 calories of fresh natural unprocessed food are very different to 1000 calories of processed packaged food. Because chemical structure of every food differs. The most important thing is the food quality and the types of foods you eat. Myriads of people have tried a

calorie restricted diet and still struggle to lose weight, then they need to come down to the types of food they are/were eating. Our daily diet defines how much sugar we are getting in. And it is absolutely critical to control it to gain good control and achieve good health. Why manufacturers add sugar while processing? In 1948, with 5,209 adult subjects from Framingham, Massachusetts. USA , a cardiovascular cohort study was conducted. The research is still on. It was in this research that fat – with saturated fat in particular- was considered bad for Heart health. Resultantly, manufacturers started removing fat from the food products en masse for better sales. When they did so, food became tasteless. To make it tasty the mfrs. started adding sugar into these products while processing it and to prolong the shelf life they added hydrogen into the food, which makes fat get converted into Trans Fat. The added sugar and artificial Trans Fat is making us sick. FDA has banned the use of trans fat from our diet since 2018. With Effect from Sept. 15, 2018 Health Canada has also prohibited from using oil, shortening, and margarine contain-
ing artificial trans fats in spreads or for frying, with the exception of deep frying doughnuts. As of 1st January 2011, in California state doughnuts and other baked goods have been prohibited from containing artificial trans fats. How we can enjoy healthy life and age gracefully: The first major step is to • Stabilise your carbohydrate intake to 120 gm per day • Eat real food. Processing and repackaging has no place in our life. • Keep blood sugar under control. Glycemic Index and Glycemic load: Needless to add that these diet changes you need to make in consultation with your doctor and seek help by referring to google and search Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load. The Glycemic Index (GI) is a relative ranking of carbohydrate in foods i.e. how they affect blood glucose levels. Carbohydrates with a low GI value (55 or less) are more slowly digested, absorbed and metabolised and cause a lower and slower rise in blood glucose and, therefore insulin levels. The glycemic load (GL) of food accounts for how much carbohydrate is in the food and how much each gram of carbohydrate in the food raises blood glucose levels. Glycemic load is based on the glycemic index (GI), and is calculated by multiplying the grams of available carbohydrate in the food times the food’s GI and then dividing by 100. Food with a high GI raises blood sugar more than a food with a medium to low GI. But the glycemic index does not take into account the amount of carbohydrate in a portion/food. So glycemic load is a better indicator of how a carbohydrate food will affect blood sugar. Here’s the calculation of Glycemic Load: = Glycemic index x Grams of carbohydrates / 100 Try working out the calculation for a
We can call Diabetes a Processed Food Disease’ because that is the leading reason for this, apart from other factors viz. genetics. As per experts genetics do not play a role more than 30% to have Diabetes Type II.

Well, a portion size of around 2/3 cup of white rice has about 36 grams of available carbohydrates and a glycemic index of 72. Here’s the math: 72 x 36 = 2,592 / 100 = 26 glycemic loads. Foods with GL of 10 or less are considered healthy for all of us. 10 to 20 moderate and over 20 bad. Stress: Excess sugar intake in succession make us sick. Sickness brings stress. Medical condition[s] and stress force us to make a change, educate our self, and eat in a sensible and correct manner. It is a daily challenge then. Being a Diabetes Coach of University of Victoria, and otherwise also , I have met many people who experienced some reasonable success in few weeks and now feel more disciplined, determined, dedicated and driven. If it is Eustress it helps. If it is DISTRESS it harms. Lifestyle i.e. Activity levels If you empower yourself with the right nutrition and lifestyle [ include exercise] and follow your Doctors’ advice, then you can eliminate or minimize medications, and prevent the gradual decline in health. In many cases, people are even putting their diabetes into full remission – meaning their body is functioning as normal – it is possible. Many proved it. Latest research says that Type 2 Diabetes can be reversed in the first 10 years of its’ onset. Blood Sugar/Blood Glucose: Both of these terms are used interchangeably. They mean the same. Blood sugar is measured in two ways. One is mg/dL [Milligrams per Deciliter]. mg/dL gives the concentration by the ratio of

We really have to change the way we think about food, because for a large part of our lives we have been misled. Billions of dollars of marketing, by Food companies will continue to promote unhealthy ‘food products’ as healthy food sources. Resultantly, we the people, have become sugar addicted and disease oriented.

weight to volume, in this case milligrams per decilitre. 1 L = 10 dL. mmol/L: Molar concentration is a measure of the concentration of a solute in a solution, or of any chemical species, in terms of amount of substance[sugar] per unit volume. mmol/L: is the most common measurement used in Canada and UK with mg/dL predominantly used in the USA, India and continental Europe. mmol/L [Millimoles per litre]. The conversion factor from mmol/l to mg/ dL is to multiply it by 18 or vice versa. These are the diagnostic ranges. Normal range for fasting glucose is under 100 mg/dl or 6 mmol/l. 2 hours after a meal, the maximum reading you ideally want to see is 140mg or 7.8mmol. If you’re getting readings above this, you would be diagnosed with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, as shown in the charts above. For Diabetic people, Diabetes Blood Sugar Level Goals are: Upon waking before breakfast (Fasting) • 70-130 (Ideal under 110) mg/dl • 4-7.2 (Ideal under 6.1) mmol/l Two hours after meals • Under 180 (Ideal is under 140) mg/dl • Under 10 (Ideal is under 7.8) mmol/l Bedtime • 90-150 mg/dl • 5-8.3 mmol/l The above levels, for people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, are the general goals set by the American Diabetes Association and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and Health Canada. It will not be out of place to mention that, there is some variation in the blood sugar levels goals set by different organizations. And additionally, your physician may set your goals at a more inflexible level. Bottomline: In fine, we can safely conclude that we have to take care of our own health. In this case Doctor and Patient is the same person. Try to stick to natural sources of • Lean Protein [ food with lot of natural protein and fiber in it], • Unsaturated Fat I.e. Polyunsaturated [ Walnuts, Sunflower seeds, Flax seeds or flax oil, Fish, such as salmon, mackerel, herring, albacore tuna, and trout etc.] • Monounsaturated Fat I.e. Extra Virgin, Olive Oil, Avocados. Nut butters. Nuts, such as almonds, cashews, pecans, Peanut and Macadamias. Eat nuts in moderation because they are high in calories. In case you are not conscious about your Food Plate, then the life will be fraught with risk factors on health front and such people cannot help singing:

Stay away from Negativity and Negative People... Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Diabetes Coach of University of Victoria
E
veryday God gives us a gift. That gift is a new day. It is our attitude positive or negative that make us choose positivity or negativity. Every morning a positive person chooses joy, happiness, and not negativity or pain. Negativity is the enemy of creativity: We Know that it’s not weird to have negative thoughts. It doesn’t make us different or unusual. It doesn’t make us odd or unique. Negativity is a part of the human experience. We however, can make a conscious choice to ignore it as and when it happens. Just because negativity is present in our mind, doesn’t mean we have to allow it to overwhelm and control our life and actions. Negativity and the submersion of our mind in negative thoughts, in succession, will never allow us to create that positive and abundant life we desire. We must monitor how we speak to ourselves because if left unchecked, negativity will root itself within our subconscious mind. Make it your mission to look for the positives in your everyday life. Choose to live a life full of gratitude, faith, and possibility. Beat back the natural impulse to grasp at the negative. Know that through your thoughts you can shape your own future. Believe that your future holds more positive opportunities and you’ll be surprised at just how many more you find. Negative people complain successively: To complain is always non-acceptance of what it is. It invariably carries an unconscious negative charge. When you complain, you make yourself into a victim. So, change the situation by taking action or by speaking out if neces-
Negativity is a tendency to be gloomy, disagreeable, and doubtful. It’s a pessimistic attitude that always expects negative things will happen. We should not make an opinion about a person on the basis of unmerited firing by others, as they are jealous with that person.

Our mission in life is not merely to survive, even animals, insects survive; so, it is not a big deal. Our sole purpose is to thrive. To do so one need to stay positive not negative. Positivity set the undercurrent and with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some welcoming style we achieve the ultimate bliss.
when negative people discourage us continuously, chances are we can become a victim of our circumstances and thereby feel sad, scared or angry; or instead, we could choose to deal with injustice gently and break the chains of negative thoughts and energies, and not let ourselves drop into it. sary. Either leave the situation or accept it. Negative people can only infest you with discouragements when they find you. Avoid their company. Better alone than in a bad company. Do not listen to negative thoughts, yours or anyone else’s. Disregarding negative thoughts isn’t hiding our head in the sand, but simply not allowing the negative to mess and influence our experience of the present moment. The moment is never improved or helped by negativity, though we are programmed to think our negative thoughts, worries, and fears plays a big role. When you really examine this idea, you will see that negativity doesn’t serve any purpose. Criticism Sandwich: The Sandwich Method (or Sandwich Technique or Hamburger Method) is so named because the pieces of bread represent positive feedback/compliments while the meat of the sandwich (or innards if you’re vegetarian) represents constructive criticism. That is offering someone a few words of praise, then getting to the meat of the problem i.e. criticism; and finally adding a few more words of praise. Bad Is Stronger Than Good: It’s in human nature, and there are even signs of it in animals as experiments with rats prove
it. Bad emotions, bad parents and bad feedback have more impact than good ones. Bad impressions and bad stereotypes are quicker to form and more resistant to fade away from our subconscious mind. That is why, bad events wear off more slowly than good ones. Daily, we tend to see people who say negative things as smarter than those who are positive. Wrongly, we give more likely to give greater weight to critical reviews. Positive outlook: Some people do have a more positive outlook, but almost everyone remembers negative things more strongly and in more detail. There are physiological as well as psychological reasons for this. The brain handles positive and negative information in different hemispheres. Negative emotions generally involve more thinking, and the information is processed more thoroughly than positive ones. Thus, we tend to contemplate more about unpleasant events — and use stronger words to describe them — than happy ones. We need to correct ourselves over here, in case anyone happens to be here. Positive people are definitely drawn to positive energy and negative people are drawn to negative energy. Stay away from negativity: You cannot expect to live a positive life if you hang with negative people. In their company you will ingrain negativity that you fail to notice. If so, you can’t stop attracting the wrong people, the wrong situations, and the wrong feelings You are responsible When good things happen to you, praise yourself. Gracefully acknowledge that you are responsible for the good things – as, you worked very hard; you earned it but do not blame external events or other people for your failures. Nobody likes to hear that. Own your failures too. Conclusion
Assuming that things happen to you and put you in the role of a victim. But. have you noticed that positive people seem to get what they want out of their life, and even if things don’t go their way, they still enjoy their lives. while negative people whine and moan about their misfortunes and even the good things in their lives. To clear negative energy, one can try this 3 -step process: • Take ownership: When we believe everything is someone else’s fault, we continue to suffer a lot. When we take ownership, we realize and learn to forgive ourselves thereby enjoy peace and joy.” • Cancel negative thoughts and replace them with positive thoughts: With practice, dedication and decision making we see the world through the eyes of “what can go right” instead of “what can go wrong. Be incurably optimistic about life but be prepared to deal with the negative. • Realize you have control over your situation: When you realize that the future is NOT cast in stone but that you have more control over your circumstances than you believe that things are in your control to the extent possible. Of course, chance plays its role. In fine, I can say that, nobody wants negative energy to permeate their lives, yet many of us allow it unconsciously, based on past conditioning. The smart thing is to learn from the past to secure a blissful future.
Negativity diminish our self-image; it deteriorates our spirit and deplete our energy. It blunts our creativity, and prevent us from being able to create the future we would like for ourselves.

Why Aren’t My Child’s Permanent Teeth Coming In? ditions like cleft palate, Gardner’s syndrome, or cleidocranial dysostosis, though they may just occur on their own. These additional teeth crop up anywhere in the dental arch and have the potential to block the permanent teeth. While treatment varies, most of the time, it will involve extracting the supernumerary tooth. If it led to tooth or jaw misalignment, this can be corrected with orthodontic treatment.
Dr Vishal Sharma BSc, DDS, Cert. Ortho. FRCD(C), FCDS(BC)
M
ost kids lose their first primary tooth around six-yearsold (though it can occur earlier or later) and the visits from the Tooth Fairy typically continue until they’re 12- to 13-yearsold. As cute as children look with those missing teeth, the thing parents usually want to know off the bat is how long does it take for a tooth to come in to replace the one that was lost? Well, it varies pretty dramatically and the permanent tooth can make an appearance in as little as a week or take as long as six months to fully erupt. If the permanent tooth is growing in on the slower side, it’s likely nothing to worry about. However, if you’re really concerned about permanent teeth not coming in or it takes longer than six months, you should make an appointment with an orthodontist to have your kiddo’s teeth and jaws evaluated. In the meantime, we’ll be going over some of the common reasons for delayed eruption. 1. Losing Primary Teeth too Early – Primary teeth are extremely important. One of their main roles is to save space for the permanent teeth to come in property. Ideally, a child loses a primary tooth because the corresponding permanent tooth begins to erupt and pushes it out. When a baby tooth is lost early, whether from injury or tooth decay, the permanent tooth likely won’t be ready to come in. Without a replacement quickly filling the void, the rest of the teeth have a tendency to shift into the empty area. This can cause significant misalignment. Occasionally, it’s so crowded that it blocks the permanent tooth from erupting altogether and the tooth gets stuck in the jaw bone. Or, it will only partially erupt making it appear that the permanent tooth stopped growing. When this happens, the tooth is said to be impacted. Extraction or oral surgery (similar to getting wisdom teeth removed) could be necessary to remedy the situation. To avoid this whole scenario, prevent premature tooth loss by making sure your child practices

good oral hygiene, visits the dentist regularly and wears a mouthguard when playing sports. If a baby tooth is lost early, don’t ignore it. An orthodontist can use an appliance to maintain space until the permanent tooth is prepared to make its debut. 2. Not Enough Space in the Jaw – The early loss of primary teeth isn’t the only reason permanent teeth may not have room to erupt. It can also occur if the jaw isn’t large enough to accommodate them. Parents sometimes panic when gaps form in between their child’s baby teeth and think their little one will experience major spacing when they’re older. However, it can actually be a good thing! Grown-up teeth are bigger than their primary counterparts, so when baby teeth are very close together without even the tiniest gaps, it’s a signal there won’t be enough room. When kids have a jaw that’s too small or teeth that are too wide, it’s a recipe for impacted teeth or severe crowding and other forms of malocclusion. Interceptive orthodontics while a child is still growing can help encourage jaw development and ensure permanent teeth will have plenty of space to do their thing. 3. Directional Problems – Sometimes, teeth have a mind of their own and instead of following the primary tooth’s path, they head in the wrong direction as they try to break through the gum tissue. Unfortunately, this can occur even if they have all of the room in the world. When it happens, the permanent tooth may not erupt or parents will notice permanent teeth not coming in straight. At Aura Orthodontics, tooth extraction is always the last resort but, if it can’t be helped, a primary tooth may need to be removed to encourage permanent teeth to stay on course. Orthodontic treatment can redirect wayward teeth as well.
4. Congenitally Missing Teeth – Congenitally (meaning present at birth) missing teeth are actually a lot more common than many people realize. While it’s most frequently the wisdom teeth, some people are missing one or both of their upper lateral incisors or second premolars. Since it’s genetic, it’s very likely someone else in the family has the same condition. With congenitally missing teeth, the permanent teeth never develop at all. Often, the primary teeth will stay in place since there’s nothing to push them out. If they are lost because of tooth decay, gum disease or trauma, no permanent tooth exists to take its place. A bridge or partial denture can be used to replace the missing tooth – or teeth – but dental implant surgery will bring about the most natural-looking, lasting results. Keep in mind, however, it can’t be performed until the jaw is done growing. Regardless of the route you choose to take, orthodontic treatment may be recommended to shift the rest of the teeth into place prior to getting a dental prosthesis. For an implant, an appliance will be fitted to save space until the time is right for surgery. 5. Supernumerary Primary Teeth – Less commonly, in a case of permanent teeth not coming down, supernumerary teeth are to blame. Supernumerary teeth are extra teeth. They can develop in association with different con-
6. Failure of Eruption – Primary failure of eruption (PFE) is extremely rare. It occurs when the permanent teeth are present and have a clear path but fail to erupt or only erupt partially and then stop. PFE is genetic. When multiple teeth are affected, treatment can take several years and consist of different steps. The most common approach is using oral surgery and orthodontic treatment to coax the teeth out. If extractions are needed, then a good option is braces to close the gap followed by dental implant surgery. Mechanical failure of eruption is another type and may involve ankylosis, which is when the tooth or teeth are fused to the bone and can’t break loose. There are a number of treatments including leaving the tooth where it is and making it look better with cosmetic dentistry procedures, using a surgical procedure to loosen the tooth followed by orthodontic treatment to shift it into place or extraction and placement of a dental prosthesis. While all of this information can be a little overwhelming, many of the causes are rare and, in most cases, the problem can be treated. Both the Canadian and American Association of Orthodontists say children should see an orthodontist by age seven so they can have their developing teeth and jaws evaluated. Well, in addition to being super friendly Surrey orthodontists, Dr. Sharma and Dr. Lin are both trained in dentofacial orthopedics, meaning they’re pros in growth and development and troubleshooting issues. They can assess your child and make sure everything is on track. If they do spot red flags, they’ll make an accurate diagnosis and recommend the correct treatment to guide the permanent teeth into their proper places. This will help your child avoid more extensive, costly correction down the road. Schedule a free consultation at Aura Orthodontics and we’ll team up with you to bring out the best in your child’s smile.

Fashion lovers, Here are 11 ways to make a statement with your footwear T
he right pair of shoes can transform your body language and attitude tremendously. Pair up Garfield or Mickey Mouse print shoes with loose and ankle-length cargo pants or opt for bold colours and attractive heels that can be paired with an all white attire, say experts. Saket Agarwal, founder at Lazy Jojo, and Surabhi Agarwal, Head of Merchandising at Crocs India, have listed a few ways of amping up the style quotient with footwear:

4 Experiment with loafers or funky sneakers as these days people prefer comfort over style. You can pair your sneakers with kurtis and saris as well to make the look edgy. 4 Pair up Garfield or Mickey Mouse print shoes with loose and anklelength cargo pants and knotted shirt. 4 Add a bit of dazzle with striking metallic heels or colour rich pumps. 4 Opt for big bold colours and attractive heels that can be paired with an all white simple and sophisticated attire. 4 A formal look can be transformed into a fun look by just changing your shoes. Pastel shoes are your classic shoes that go with any and every outfit and are rightly termed as a universal pairing. 4 A boring, mundane jersey dress can give a different look if you pair it with shoes that have a subtle, but quirky print. 4 Formal attire is usually seen as plain and dull, but you can brighten it up by adding a pair of canvas shoes with an attractive doodle print. 4 Adding a clog to your shoe-drobe can actually enhance your look. 4 A statement dress can be paired up with floral print shoes, just to add a small element of peculiarity.* Iridescent arrow-like prints, zigzags, squares and many other shapes can be worn with a number of attires. 4 If you are travelling in a gang, or having a major get-together, a fun thing to do would be everyone wearing a pair of shoes with the same print, basis the theme of the party, like Halloween, Christmas or Courtsey: IANS Holi.

STROKE:
your brain become narrowed or blocked, causing severely reduced blood flow (ischemia). The most common ischemic strokes include: Thrombotic stroke. A thrombotic stroke occurs when a blood clot (thrombus) forms in one of the arteries that supply blood to your brain. A clot may be caused by fatty deposits (plaque) that build up in arteries and cause reduced blood flow (atherosclerosis) or other artery conditions. Embolic stroke. An embolic stroke occurs when a blood clot or other debris forms away from your brain — commonly in your heart — and is swept through your bloodstream to lodge in narrower brain arteries. This type of blood clot is called an embolus.
Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC

stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted or severely reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. Just to explain, about one Million of our skin cells gets replaced daily, Every Minute the brain Cells do not get Blood supply or Oxygen more than 1.9 Million Brain Cells die Every Minute Hence Stroke is Some what like a heart Attack of the Brain A stroke is a medical emergency. Prompt treatment is crucial. Early action can minimize brain damage and potential complications. SYMPTOMS Watch for these signs and symptoms if you think you or someone else may be having a stroke. Note when your signs and symptoms begin, because the length of time they have been present may guide your treatment decisions: Trouble with speaking and understanding. You may experience confusion. You may slur your words or have difficulty understanding speech. Paralysis or numbness of the face, arm or leg. You may develop sudden numbness, weakness or paralysis in your face, arm or leg, especially on one side of your body. Try to raise both your arms over your head at the same time. If one arm begins to fall, you may be having a stroke. Similarly, one side of your mouth may droop when you try to smile. Trouble with seeing in one or both eyes. You may suddenly have blurred or blackened vision in one or both eyes, or you may see double. Headache. A sudden, severe headache, which may be accompanied by vomiting, dizziness or altered consciousness, may indicate you’re having a stroke. Trouble with walking. You may stumble or experience sudden dizziness, loss of balance or loss of coordination. When to see a doctor Seek immediate medical attention

if symptoms go away. Every minute counts. The longer a stroke goes untreated, the greater the potential for brain damage and disability
Think “FAST” and do the following: • Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop? • Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? Or is one arm unable to raise up? • Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is his or her speech slurred or strange? • Time. If you observe any of these signs, call 911 immediately. Call 911 or your local emergency number right away. Don’t wait to see
CAUSES A stroke may be caused by a blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or the leaking or bursting of a blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke). Some people may experience only a temporary disruption of blood flow to their brain (transient ischemic attack, or TIA). Ischemic stroke About 85 percent of strokes are ischemic strokes. Ischemic strokes occur when the arteries to
Hemorrhagic stroke Hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in your brain leaks or ruptures. Brain hemorrhages can result from many conditions that affect your blood vessels, including uncontrolled high blood pressure (hypertension), overtreatment with anticoagulants and weak spots in your blood vessel walls (aneurysms). A less common cause of hemorrhage is the rupture of an abnormal tangle of thin-walled blood vessels (arteriovenous malformation) present at birth. Types of hemorrhagic stroke include: Intracerebral hemorrhage. In an intracerebral hemorrhage, a blood vessel in the brain bursts and spills into the surrounding brain tissue, damaging brain cells. Brain cells beyond the leak are deprived of blood and also damaged. High blood pressure, trauma, vascular malformations, use of bloodthinning medications and other conditions may cause an intracerebral hemorrhage. Subarachnoid hemorrhage. In a subarachnoid hemorrhage, an artery on or near the surface of your brain bursts and spills into the space between the surface of your brain and your skull. This bleeding is often signaled by a sudden, severe headache. A subarachnoid hemorrhage is commonly caused by the bursting of a small sack-shaped or berryshaped outpouching on an artery known as an aneurysm. After the hemorrhage, the blood vessels in your brain may widen and narrow erratically (vasospasm), causing brain cell damage by further limiting blood flow. Cont. in Next Issue

O
ur living spaces are a reflection of who we are. More and more of us want to come back home to a beautiful home which we call our own, and for good measure considering the taxing lives we live. Our havens, den, our roof under the sun, the place we lick our wounds, grow, sleep, and mostly chill in should be comfortable, warm and reflect our personalities. The home is where the heart is they say, so how about taking some time (and tips) to make your room homely and heartwarming. Few easy tips, a weekend, and you

can easily revamp yours to look more classy and nice. 1. Keep it clean Don’t clutter the room up; too much of anything ruins the effect - take some time and throw ut anything that
2. Add some lights No, not the white tube light. I am talking yellow fairy lights, stream of bulbs, statement lamps...the likes. They add an ambient touch to the room and give off warm vibes. In short, they have the room happy. 3. Think plants and flowers I know you might scoff but apart from building your taking-care skills, indoor plants are a great touch to any room. Buying fresh flowers also does the trick - a pop of color for your room. What is that hash tag? #GoodVibesOnly. 4. Mirror on the wall One full length for one side of the room, or a beautifully framed mirror on the wall - whatever the choice, mirrors change the way a room looks. There are a lot of vintage, elegant frames available in the market for one to choose from. 5. Accent furniture

isn’t needed. The idea is to give the idea of spaciousness in limited space. Push the furniture pieces to the four walls of the room which leaves the space in the centre to you.

The one thing, and just one, that draws (and compliments) when someone walks into the room. Statement furniture that can be thrifted from an old furniture market is a beautiful way to add some personality to your room - it can be a beautiful vintage chair, a distressed chest of drawers, a French trunk, a chintz armchair, the likes. 6. Get quirky with decor Take an old ladder, put it against a wall, and deck it up with fairy lights. Or get empty wall frames and mount them on the wall in a pattern. Invest in some printed bed sheets or patchwork quilt. But with these, make sure these things standalone. 7. Don’t overkill The idea is to keep it simple and clean. Another good idea will be to paint the walls white, they make the room look spacious and cleaner. But any way, make sure you don’t have too many things that draw everyone’s attention and overwhelms the senses. Courtsey: SWIRLSTER

How to Wear Yellow in Winter
W
ho says the cold season is just about grey, maroon and white? There’s every reason to sport a bright hue like yellow in your wardrobe. Here are tips to get the sunshine shade fashionably right... 4Waiting for when the chills come on? Opt for a long yellow trench coat to keep you warm. 4How about a long, floral maxi dress that allows for a breezy look? It’s loose, swingy style can work for the day and evening. 4Swap the dull, grey sweater for a bright-yellow cardigan. Wear it with a white shirt, black trousers and a string of pearls. 4If you are wearing a yellow top, pair it with neutrals such a blue denims or black pants so that the hue does not overpower the look. 4You can also opt for a floral peplum, which acts as a smart trick to hide your waist. 4Show off some panache in a bold yellow jumpsuit. Wear it with sandals and long, metal chains. 4Wear tailored yellow trousers to the workplace with a white and black ruffled shirt. 4To go casual, pair a yellow T-shirt with your denims and an A-4 clutch. Aries ( 21 March – 19 April) – This month will see expansion through philosophy, travel or education. It promotes the flow in your life so that things are easier than they have been in the past. You will find ways to express your unique identity in the outer world, preferably while promoting social justice.
Leo ( 23 July – 22 August ) - You might encounter a physical or emotional blockage that demands healing before you move forward. If you do not recognize your feelings, a situation may drop in from the sky that will remind you of circumstances of the past. You will be prone to overreact.

MANISH’S ZODIAC PREDICTIONS - MARCH 2018
****Dates of Zodiac Signs have been taken according to Vedic System of Astrology
Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May ) – You will be preoccupied in issues ranging from the mundane study of the budget to important discussions with partners over the need for greater intimacy. You may be organizing business issues related to an inheritance or your own legacy. You will back out of unviable professional commitments.
Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September ) - A new vision for your life will take its place as the month moves forward, but be patient. It will be your responsibility to maintain the opportunities you’ve been given. You will be adding new spirit to an ongoing relationship. Many possibilities for reaching people will develop.
Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June ) - This is a propitious time for you to begin new things, especially if they involve travel or communications. Give special attention to investments and other shared resources. Ease up on the energy output. Your physical body may feel sluggish and your primary focus should be on internal healing.
Libra ( 23 September – 22 October ) - This should be an exciting month; something long in the making will show signs of fruition. There are still some loose ends that need to be tied up, though. You are setting and achieving goals and you must also learn compassion to manifest your best results.
Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July ) - You will feel the need to mature and to solidify your identity, in a new or additional field of work. Changes have come into your life through relationships with those who have minds of their own and they will teach you to set boundaries and claim your independence in a relationship.
Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November ) - Positivity, affirmations, being kind to yourself, celebrating your talents and successes – all of this will create fertile soil for your dreams to take root and grow. You will need to let go of any desire to have power over others and focus on developing your inner strength.
Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December ) - A pervading sense of ambivalence is creeping into your life just when you think it’s safe. You’ve been putting too much emphasis on some form of security: a relationship, job or lifestyle. It is holding you back as you’re overlooking an opportunity right in front of your eyes.
Capricorn
( 22 December – 19 January ) - You should be inspired to achieve greater spiritual understanding by clearing your mind of past thoughts. Being true to yourself will bring about the happiness you seek. Progress will be made and stability is just around the corner! Take this inspirational energy and put it to good use.
Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February ) - Concentrate on your strengths and abilities and let go of what you cannot complete or what you don’t possess. Start creating very specific financial plans and goals to get yourself there. It will help. get your life on track and put more trust in your own thoughts and ideas.
Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March ) – You are in the midst of warmth, brightness, and beauty. Keep reaching for the skies, to stay connected with nature and grasp the full power of your capacity and set yourselves free from all restrictions. Work on self-care, selfassessment and the choices you need to make in life.
