SUPERVISA INSURANCE- KEY ASPECTS
You need not take any medical test prior to purchasing Supervisa insurance.
D
ue to the abundant opportunities that Canada offers, a large number of people from different parts of the world arrive here to settle for a better quality of life. While we strive to establish ourselves, our other major goal remains the ‘reunion’ with our parents/grandparents, and we want that they should stay with us for longer durations of time. To address this pressing need of Canadian citizens and permanent residents, the government of Canada introduced Super Visa on December 1, 2011 which allows parents/grandparents to stay with their children for extended durations of time. We hope that the below mentioned key aspects will help in addressing your concerns about this opportunity. Q: Can I purchase a visitor’s policy for my parents? Yes, you can certainly purchase visitor or super visa insurance for your parents. Q. What is a Super Visa? Though all categories of visitors may come to Canada and can get emergency medical coverage under visitor’s insurance, parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents are eligible for supervisa. This new type of visa has been in existence for over eight years (started- Dec 1, 2011) and is already proving to be an extremely popular option that is reuniting families across Canada as it allows parents and grandparents of Canadian Citizens and permanent residents to visit their children/relatives in Canada for up to two years without the need of renewal of their status. The super visa offers greater flexibility as it is valid for ten years, and allows multiple entries into Canada. Q: Who is eligible for Canada’s Super Visa? To be eligible for a Super Visa, you’ll need to provide the following information: • The person’s ties to the home country • The purpose of the visit • The person’s family and financial situation A written commitment of financial support from the Canadian child or grandchild who meets a minimum income threshold Complete Immigration Medical Examination Proof of Canadian medical insurance (very important) Q: What amount of visitors travel medical insurance

should I purchase? Medical expenses in Canada can be extremely high, amounting to over $3,000 per day of hospitalization, and air ambulance charges to return you home can further escalate to tens of thousands of dollars. The amount of super visa coverage that you need depends upon the length of your stay, and the financial cover required in the event of an accident or illness. As the free healthcare system of Canada doesn’t extend to the visitors, it is recommended that you should purchase $100,000 of medical insurance coverage. It will provide you peace of mind by easing your financial burden in case of any unforeseen medical expenditure. In fact, the government has made it mandatory for the supervisa applicants to provide proof of sufficient emergency medical insurance with a minimum coverage of $100,000 for at least one year. If my parents return home before the end of one year, can they get a refund on the premium? If your parent/grandparent returns earlier than the expiry date of coverage, the premium is refundable on a Pro rata basis. After deducting an administration fee of $25 to 50 (varies from company to company), the refundable amount is calculated on a per- day-basis. What will happen if the visa is denied? In case the visa is not issued, you can cancel the policy to get a full refund. Q: Can I purchase insurance coverage from an insurance company in my parent’s home country? No. According to the rules of CIC, supervisa insurance needs to be purchased from a Canadian insurance company. Q: If I have a pre-existing condition, can I get coverage for that with visitor’s insurance? Yes. Different insurance companies offer plans for both pre-existing condition and without pre-existing condition, but these involve a stability period. Depending upon their provisions, insurance companies demand a stability period of 3 months, 4 months or, 6 months.
What does super visa insurance cover? Every policy is slightly different, but most insurers provide coverage for: • Emergency medical expenses • Routine doctor’s fees • X-rays • Prescription drugs • Emergency dental Are regular checkups covered under visitor’s insurance and Super Visa insurance policies? Visitors to Canada medical insurance and Super visa insurance are intended to cover the expenses for medical emergencies that the visitor may experience during his stay in Canada. However, regular checkups are not covered under these policies. Q: When does my policy start? Your policy starts from the effective date of coverage that you have mentioned to the insurance agent. This can be their arrival date in Canada. It is though advisable to purchase coverage from the day your parent/grandparent leaves their home country to fly to Canada. Q: What is a deductible? A deductible implies an amount that you agree to pay for any medical visit before you submit claim for reimbursement of medical expenses to the insurance company. Insurance companies offer a deductible of $250, $500 and $1000. For a higher deductible amount, there is a corresponding decrease in premium. Q: Are my parents allowed to bring in a year’s supply of their prescription medication? Your parents, in fact, must bring their year’s supply of medicine for any pre-existing medical condition because visitor’s insurance doesn’t cover prescription medicine that has been advised before the effective date of insurance. It only covers prescription medicine that is prescribed by the doctor after patient’s emergency medical visit to the doctor. Q: Is medical test necessary before buying visitors to Canada insurance?
Depending upon their provisions, different insurance companies offer different rates and coverage for visitors with pre existing medical conditions. So you need to understand the insurance coverage that is most suitable for your medical concerns, if any. It is always wise to compare different insurance plans before purchasing one for you. This will relieve you of any undue worries when you need financial assistance during the emergence of a claim. Q: Are the companies on this website reputable? All Canadian insurance companies are recognised by the Canadian government. Depending upon their provisions, they offer insurance coverage based upon the factors of age, pre-existing medical concerns and duration of insurance coverage. As per your requirement, you can purchase insurance coverage from any of these. Q: Can I purchase insurance online without any extra fee/costs? Yes, you can certainly purchase Super Visa insurance as emergency medical insurance online without any extra fee. But it is recommended that you should purchase insurance through an expert insurance advisor. Since various types of coverage options are offered by insurance companies according to your needs, resources and medical concerns, if any, the advisor can explain to you in detail the best insurance plan. This ensures you peace of mind during the emergence of claim, as the right coverage ensures hassle free processing of claims. As an independent insurance advisor working through Punjab Insurance Agency, I deal with different insurance companies offering plans for different types of insurance. I can explain to you in detail, the insurance plan options and coverage that are suitable for your needs and resources. Besides, I can also help you to purchase mortgage insurance, super visa insurance, disability insurance, critical illness insurance, extended medical plans, group medical plans, RESP, RRSP, travel insurance, TFSA accounts, health and dental plans along with estate planning suitable for your needs and resources. Parenting in the digital era
Technology has arguably never had such an impact on government, industry, and society as it has in the previous 20 years. Technological advancements such as the internet and the resulting social networks, media have already altered our daily lives, and AI and automation promise to alter it even further. Even social and cultural organisations have been altered by digital technology.
B
ecause digital media has such a big impact on children’s physical and mental development, parenting in the digital era must obviously take on new aspects. Parents cannot afford to remain passive spectators as the digital world unfolds. They must become an active and alert participant in order for their children to thrive in the new era while being protected from the potential dangers of it. Here are some tips for parents to optimize the digital engagement of their children: Teaching children the value of Real-Life Interaction Humans are social beings, and studies suggest that those who are more socially active, live healthier and longer lives. Youngsters must learn that no amount of digital technology can substitute for faceto-face social engagement. Limiting screen time It is important to set limits on when kids use gadgets or any other devices. To begin with, the use of digital devices must be restricted at the following times:1 hour before going to bed, on weeknights, before they finish their schoolwork, when relatives and friends come to visit, whenever you’re having a meal. Setting these limits will help in reducing the harmful consequences of excessive usage of devices. Considering age factor before introducing technology Usage of digital gadgets can have both beneficial and negative impacts on the youngsters. Therefore, we should be mindful at what age we introduce our kids to digital devices. Children under the age of 24 months should not be exposed to smart gadgets as frequently as a more mature youngster. It is recommended to wait until your child is in school before allowing him or her to use digital tools. Because many children will be obliged to use

technology during their schooling, it’s a good idea to start introducing it to your child before they attend full-time school. Make time to interact with your child utilizing digital devices such as computers, telephones or tablets There are various applications available for both parents and children to use together that may provide a fantastic bonding experience. You could also try recommending them to download games that you both enjoy. Inspiring Independence Encouraging your child to be self-sufficient will pay significant returns as they grow older. You may accomplish this in a variety of ways, including encouraging your child to securely explore the digital world. This can begin by allowing your child to browse the web unsupervised while also teaching them on the hazards of online use. Have an open conversation It’s important that you create an environment that encourages
your youngster to open up about anything. If your child is having a negative experience while using their digital device, they need to know that they may talk to you about it. This is why you must tell your child that he or she has the right to bring up any topic with which they are uncomfortable. Have frequent chats with your child Make it a point to positively connect with your child on a daily basis. This will help them develop a positive attitude and create a much better understanding between the two of you. The interaction can be done using digital gadget or without it. Become the pupil As a parent, you would want to teach your child all you know so that they may grow up to be successful adults. However, it is sometimes necessary to set aside time to allow your children to teach you something new every day. Children are notoriously enthralled by a wide range of
subjects. Find something they’re enthusiastic about and invest some time on it. Encouraging them to teach you what they know will help them gain confidence over time, particularly if they are in full-time education. While technology can be beneficial to your child’s development, especially in terms of access to educational materials, it also has the potential to be dangerous. Before allowing your child to use technology freely, it is vital to educate yourself. It’s also vital to have open communication with and teach your child about technology, including the positive and negative aspects. Regardless matter the circumstances, being a parent can be challenging. Parenting in the digital age presents a new set of issues, requiring you to monitor your child’s online activities while simultaneously maximizing their participation with recent innovations in the digital sphere - the requirement of the twentyfirst century industry. When we think about New Year resolutions, losing those extra pounds, reading that book, switching to a healthy diet are some of the few things everyone wants to do. The key is to choose your resolutions wisely and make it happen.
A guide to help you stick to your New Year resolutions!
A
If you decide to eat healthily, create a plan that details out your meals in advance. This way there is no room for cheating on your diet.
Here’s a smart guide to identifying the right resolutions to improve your life, creating a plan on how to reach it, and becoming part of the small group of people that successfully achieve their goal.
Planning ahead for the probable challenges can help you feel equipped to handle the unexpected obstacles that crop up along the way as well.
study conducted by researchers at the University of Scranton found that 23 percent of people quit working on their resolution just two weeks into the new year, only 19 percent of resolution setters stick to their goals over the long haul.
Measurable goal Vague resolutions give no one clarity. A statement like ‘I want to get healthier,’ or ‘I want to be happier’ has more weightage, when it is linked to a number. You can tell yourself, ‘I want to go to the gym three times a week,’ or ‘I want to go for a nature trail twice a month.’ This will add tangibility to your goal. Plan for success

life easy and one should leverage them to their advantage. Internal motivation Internal motivation to do something, makes you feel more confident and stronger through the process. You’re not going to hate it so much because you know you’re training for better habits in yourself. One of the biggest reasons pledges fail
is because they’re externally motivated as it is defined by how other people react to you. It is important to stick to a handful of resolutions instead of a list of countless goals. Adapt targets at a realistic pace so that each victory boosts confidence and carries you forward in ticking them off the list. By: N. Lothungbeni Humtsoe
Self-monitoring Monitoring your progress is key to creating lasting change. Assessing improvements on a regular basis can be enough to keep you motivated. pending time together is one of the greatest gifts families can give to one another. Not only does sharing quality time strengthen and build family bonds, but it also provides a sense of belonging and security for everyone in the family.
You may need to establish some guidelines for the meeting, like setting a time limit for each agenda item and implementing a “no talking” rule when someone else has the floor. Emphasize, too, the need to be kind, considerate, and respectful. The goal for these meetings is to solve family issues in a productive way.
As a parent, you play a key role in cultivating and protecting these family bonds. But building strong family connections doesn’t always happen naturally. In our hectic day-to-day lives, it can take a concerted effort to carve out time for your family. If you want to make this firm foundation a reality in your family, commit to some of these practices.
Encourage support Feeling supported by your family is one of the most important elements of building strong family bonds. Bonds like these will last your kids a lifetime. To create a sense of support, encourage everyone to learn what is important to their family members and to do their best to support each other through the good and the bad times. Everyone in the family should feel empowered to share good news as well as bad and receive a loving response.
Schedule Family Time Whether you have schoolaged children or teens, it takes planning to make sure you’re getting enough quality together time. Set aside time for family. Look at everyone’s schedule to see if there are any blocks of time that can be designated family time. Try to select a regular night, maybe once a week, when the entire family gets together for a fun activity. By keeping this night on a regular schedule, everyone will know that they need to keep that night clear for family time. Plan outings: Another way to incorporate family time into your schedule is to plan regular day trips. If this is something that sounds fun for your family, try to plan the trip at least one month in advance. Post it on the family calendar and make sure that everyone is aware of the plan.
Support your child’s interests
If you’re unable to get together for dinner as a family because of busy schedules, try breakfast. The key is to come together and enjoy a meal free of distractions. Do chores as a family
Eat meals together
Make cleaning your home or caring for your yard a responsibility the whole family shares. Create a list of chores and have everyone sign up. Then set up a time during the week or on the weekend when everyone can tackle their chores at the same time.
Choose a few nights during the week when you expect everyone to gather around the dinner table. Don’t allow phones or other electronics. Just eat a meal (something easy is fine!) and have a conversation together.
If your teens have a demanding schedule and need a little more flexibility, give them a deadline to have their chores completed. But remind them that doing chores together makes the job go much faster than doing them alone.
How to create quality time with your family:
www.entertainmentmagazine.ca
What’s more, doing chores together also can foster a sense of teamwork, especially if someone gets done early and is willing to help another family member complete their tasks. To make doing chores more rewarding, plan a small reward for when the work is done like getting ice cream together, watching a movie, or playing a board game.
Strong families support their family members’ passions. Whether that means attending their soccer games, reading a book series they love, or helping them collect figurines from a movie or TV show, it is important to support your child’s interests.

3 tips to take heed of in your twenties When we think about our career, friendship, and other aspects of our lives, our minds go cray and blank. If you’ve been there, you know what I’m talking about; otherwise, brace yourself because you’re about to face that phase.

takeaways from his session:
Tip #1 - Find people who are nothing like you and learn from them Go back to the first day of college, job or any social event. Our natural instinct in social situations is to find people similar to us. We want to belong to a certain group aka our tribe. People we can relate to. People who think like us. But being in a circle of people who are identical to us doesn’t promote learning. Ankur says, “You will never learn anything from someone who agrees with you. Consciously, spend time with people who are different from you. Make diverse friends, talk to more people, understand what it is that they know you don’t.” Tip #2 - Growth stops when complaining starts If we draw a comparison at any given point, most of us will find that we are quite privileged. We are a sum total of all the opportunities that our parents’ hard work opened for us. It’s easy to feel entitled and believe that the world owes us power, money, degree or anything at all. Just because something worked once, doesn’t mean it always will. In order to succeed, we truly have to stop cribbing and take control of
our life. Ankur says, “The day you start complaining, you stop growing. The minute we feel we deserve something, we feel entitled. The truth is we don’t deserve anything in life. We are where we are in life because we were just plain lucky.” Tip #3- Comfort breeds mediocrity It’s very easy for us to believe that life’s purpose is to make life comfortable. With everything becoming one-click we are used to having convenience at our
fingertips. Everything around us is designed to give us comfort and comfort creates complacency. Living in comfort is not the right way to think about life. “The most successful people, people who inspire you, people you’d want to be are on a constant daily basis taking the path of maximum resistance. They are challenging their fear and whatever they believe in because that’s the only way to change your orbit,” said Ankur. By: N. Lothungbeni Humtsoe

alling in love with a fellow human, with the equal amount of passion, dedication, and commitment that books and cinema tell us about becomes tricky for the younger generation. This generation has learnt how to draw boundaries and prioritise a career over love. This generation has also learnt how to break toxic cycles, which were previously considered part of everyday love stories. But love has also not necessarily been allowed to slip past. The young cohort has tried to take charge and find love through apps, instead of waiting to meet someone’s eyes across the street. And this generation of lovers has, most importantly, tried to give mental health counselling a chance – to grow as an individual – and to recognise the problems, resolve them and to eventually let love go, if the problems prevail. But how does a young population, simultaneously trying to break so many wheels, deal with the matters of the heart when a health crisis takes over the planet? With an uncertain future and time coming to a standstill, records speak of many people being pushed to a deteriorating stage of mental health. The years of 2020 and 2021 changed the course of many people’s lives, further leading to newer discourses on human interactions, as well as love. While some ended their relationships because of the distance caused by the pandemic, some did it because

of attachment issues caused by the same reason. While some took refuge in dating apps because they were simply bored, some chose to go ahead with them because they genuinely missed intimacy – of the mind, heart, as well as of the body. While it’s not a bad thing to lean into the comfort of an established relationship and some sense of routine during this time, keeping that spark of romance ever-present bodes well for your emotional and physical connection, as well as your mental health. Below we’ve outlined a few ways you can do just that. Make Small Gestures of Love Every person is unique regarding the types of gestures they’ll appreciate most, and you know your partner best. To make your partner feel loved and wanted, you could try doing these little things: 4Shooting them a lovey text message in the middle of the workday (even if you’re only a few feet apart) 4Having breakfast ready for them on a weekend morning 4Tackling a dreaded chore they usually tend to do 4Delivering a cup of soothing tea to them 4Taking time for little hugs and kisses throughout the day The increased amount of time you’re spending together provides ample opportunity to make at least www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

one small gesture every day. It will make you feel good to offer these tokens of love, as well. Check In With Your Partner Regularly Even if you know your partner backward and forward and can usually anticipate their every need, we’re all experiencing something we’ve never gone through before. If you’re in the beginning of a relationship or still figuring each other out, it’s also important to step back and check in with your partner. The bottom line is that taking the time to specifically ask your partner what they might need from you during this unprecedented event signals your love for them, fosters a romantic connection, and can help you both weather the storm. Here’s what you can say to make your partner feel loved: 4How can I best support you today/ right now/in these next months? 4It looks like you’ve been handling all of this really well, but I just wanted to check in with you to make sure. 4Do you want to talk about anything you’re feeling right now? partner. And this definitely doesn’t have to always mean
Some other ways you might foster a physical connection include: 4Kissing 4Snuggling on the couch 4Holding hands on a long walk 4Trading five-minute massages Simply having conversations about physical intimacy can help spark desire and connection, too. You might find that now is a good time to talk about (and/or satisfy) each other’s fantasies or things you’ve been curious about. Interestingly, having sex has also been linked to reduction in stress hormones. Reminisce Together Looking back at the ‘good old times’ can bring happy memories, make you laugh, and make you remember just how far you two have come together over the months or years. If your relationship is relatively new, think back to those initial flirty text conversations, your first few days, or funny moments that might have occurred when meeting each other’s families or friends. If you’re in a more established relationship, go ahead and crack open an old photo album or your Facebook photo reel, look through old cards or mementos, or simply sit face to face recalling hilarious or heart-warming memories. Here’s how you can deal with winter acne breakouts Acne, as we all know, is caused by oil, germs, dead skin cells, and dirt being clogged in the pores. When this happens, a pimple or blemish can appear anywhere on your body, although it’s most common on the face, shoulders, back, neck, chest, and upper arms. You may have acne if this problem affects your skin on a regular basis. Acne is the most prevalent skin problem, and it may be excruciatingly unpleasant, especially when severe. It can also induce mental anguish.

ometimes it is very important to know that acne is a result of PCOS (poly cystic ovarian syndrome) too, explained Dr. Anubha Singh. Hormonal imbalance is at the heart of PCOS. In very simple terms, the condition causes an increase in your levels of “male hormones” - testosterone, for instance. These hormones trigger the sebaceous gland to produce more oil than necessary, which clogs pores and creates the perfect environment for breakouts, resulting in acne. Stay Hydrated So, the main reason why acne is bothering you in winter is the lower consumption of water. Our skin becomes dry because of the

excessive exfoliation can drain the essential oils from your skin and make it dry. Too much dryness can be a reason for winter breakouts.
Keep your face clean
Exercise and Rejuvenate
The one thing that you need to take care of is using a face cleanser that doesn’t dry out your skin but rather hydrates it. The moist winter air can easily clog your pores with various pollutants. Cleaning and exfoliating are necessary for facial hygiene.
Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you can skip your morning routine. It might seem to be a great effort to get up and go for a walk in the cold weather, but so what? You can exercise indoors. Maybe you can do yoga or dance. However, staying indoors all the time isn’t advisable because if you take in the refreshing morning air, it will rejuvenate your skin and keep winter breakouts away from you.
Moisturize, Moisturize & Moisturize Yes, we can’t emphasise enough how important it is to keep your skin moisturised in winter. A common mistake most girls make is using a moisturiser that is oilbased. If you have oily skin, you should prefer to use a waterbased moisturiser or a facial gel. However, having oily skin doesn’t mean you can skip the moisturizing part. We also suggest using facials or face packs that deeply nourish your skin. Fruit packs or facials are good for all skin types. Avoid too much Exfoliation Of course, you need to exfoliate your skin in winter as well, but
cause skin irritation. 4 Do not pick on acne. Source: IANS
What not to do 4 Small things/ changes make all the difference. 4 Do not take long hot showers; you can rather use lukewarm water. 4 Do not use oily cosmetics or skin care products. 4 Strong perfumes or products with pungent fragrances shall be avoided as it can www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

10 smart tricks to drive away dandruff this winter
deficiency and to be safe when used in the recommended amounts. Deficiency can lead to dandruff. Rule out fungal infection, psoriasis if it is not responding to medicines.
A dry, itchy scalp is the most common cause of dandruff in the winter. A number of variables contribute to this, including dry, chilly air and a high prevalence of the Malassezia fungus. If you want to reduce and treat dandruff, you’ll need to utilise the correct hair care products for the job. Dandruff is by far the most inconvenient and humiliating hair issue.
Dandruff can be caused by stress, a change in climate (severe heat or cold), an overabundance of fatty foods, a change in shampoo, excessive sweat, and even pollution. Dandruff flares up when Malassezia, a naturally occurring microorganism on the scalp, is worsened by any of these circumstances. Dr Amrendra Kumar, Consultant Dermatologist and Hair Transplant Surgeon, Director of DermaClinix shares some tricks to drive away dandruff this winter are as followsAvoid direct heat- One of the most common causes of a flaky scalp is excessive heat. why hair dryers are so popular in the winter. However, direct heat exposure, such as from ironing boards and hair dryers, dries the scalp. Instead, towel-dry your hair before allowing it to air dries. Cut down on sugar- Sugar is bad for both your skin and your hair. It turns out that it’s also bad for your hair! Excessive oily flakes are caused by high blood sugar levels, which increase dandruff in the winter. Reduce your sugar intake and replace it with honey or jaggery.
Drink more water- We often forget to drink water during the winter, which dehydrates the skin and hair, causing more dandruff. The average daily water consumption limit is set at 5 litres, but if it’s getting too cold, 4 litres will suffice! Use biotin and zinc supplementsBiotin is a hair vitamin that can be found in a variety of foods and is also available as a supplement in pharmacies and supermarkets. Biotin has been found to be “likely effective” in the treatment of biotin
Use shampoo containing zinc pyrithione, selenium sulphide or 2% ketoconazole- Many antidandruff shampoos contains zinc pyrithione shampoo. It is antifungal, antibacterial, and antimicrobial, which means it, can kill fungus, bacteria, and microorganisms that cause itchy, flaky scalp. If you’ve tried these shampoos and other home remedies and still don’t feel better, then consult a dermatologist. The contact period of shampoo should be a minimum of 5 minutes. Physiotherapy treatment for Tennis Elbow Krishna Jeeja
(CEO MJ Physio)
What Causes Tennis Elbow? Tennis Elbow can be caused due to the stress applied on tendons. The common cause for such stress or strain could be due to repetitive wrist and arm motions. Pain is experienced on the outside of the elbow and often noticed on the forearm and wrist too. Initially, the pain will start in the elbow and then spread up to the wrist. Symptoms of Tennis Elbow Primary symptoms are swelling and pain. Some might experience mild discomfort while you move your arm, or might be worse sometimes that could even disturb your sleep. Pain occurs in the outside of your elbow and sometimes you may feel tender to the touch. Repetitive movements of the wrist will make the pain worse and pain could go further down your forearms. The pain might get worse if you continue with movements especially if you’re into weight lifting. How Physiotherapy could be beneficial in treating tennis elbow? Physiotherapy could be very beneficial in treating severe and acute cases of tennis elbow. In usual cases, most people neglect the pain thinking that it might go away sometime. They only consult physio only if the pain is constant and becomes worse day by day. Here are some of the objectives where physiotherapy could be beneficial: • Reduce pain • Retarding muscle atrophy • Improving flexibility • Improving motor endurance, and • Facilitate in resuming to sports or other activities Treatment for tennis elbow takes six months to two years of time to recover completely. However, in the majority of cases, the pain is recovered fully within a year. Here’s why eating seasonal food is good for you

o meet our dietary needs, nutritionists throughout the country have begun looking at substances accessible in India. They’re looking at ancient wisdom and seasonal local possibilities, which is unsurprising. These solutions are not only environmentally friendly, but they also help the local economy!
“Each season offers an array of gorgeous fresh vegetables, each rich in nutrients, antioxidants, and phytonutrients in their own way,” explains Dr. Rajyalakshmi Devi of Lovlife Hospital. Furthermore, the climate provided by each season makes seasonal produce easily edible and absorbable by our bodies.” It’s crucial to note, however, that these indigenous fruits and vegetables are sprayed with pesticides to prevent insects and pests from spoiling them. “Always choose seasonal fruits and vegetables as they are filled with the nutrients needed to aid you during that time,” says Chef Kunal Kapur, who promotes eating seasonal cuisine. Further, he also shares his expertise on the various benefits of consuming seasonal food: 4Seasonal food offers high nutritional value - Fruits and vegetables that naturally ripen taste better, are fresh and offer the highest amount of nutrients as compared to those that are preserved. 4Seasonal food is cheaper - Crops produced seasonally are cost effective since farmers invest and harvest them in bulk. Sourcing of local stock also reduces the cost of logistics drastically. 4Seasonal food is ecological - Eating seasonal food decreases the demand of out-ofseason produce, increases the consumption of local farming, and more importantly lessens the time for refrigeration, decreases the cost involved in transportation and irrigation of the crops. 4Seasonal food tastes better - Since the food produced in a particular season is fresh, it tastes better, sweeter and is perfectly ripened. When fruits and vegetables are harvested at the right time, it will be more flavourful. Source: IANS

Superfoods for healthy skin during Winters Y our food habits have a huge impact on your energy levels and even show on your skin. The dietary choices we make every day can either make us feel energetic and look good or can make us look older than our actual age.
Healthy eating is beneficial for maintaining proper body weight as well as boosting the immune system. It rejuvenates your skin and improves your hair quality, thereby leaving you with glowing skin and reduced hair fall. Apart from that, it also helps to smoothen the skin, curb wrinkles and strengthen nails. Skin, during winters, can become dry, and one might not be able to protect it in the right manner despite moisturizers. Certain superfoods can help healthily protect the skinWater: This one is one of the most important elements in our daily diet. Water gives our body and skin the much-needed boost of hydration. Consuming ample water makes the skin soft, smooth and supple. If the opposite is done, it can lead to dryness, clogged pores, wrinkles and blemishes. Further, drinking less water leaves you dehydrated that can trigger fatigue and make you look older. Fatty Acids: Omega-3 fatty acids found in walnuts, flax seeds, and fish like Salmon and Mackerel help in keeping the skin nourished. These polyunsaturated fats accelerate the production of the skin’s natural oil barrier, which is critical in keeping your skin hydrated. It even makes it plumper, and younger-looking. Carrots: Carrots are rich in betacarotene and lycopene that protect skin from UV damage. Although the sun is not too bright in winters, UV rays are still present all around us. Carrots are also packed with Vitamin A, potassium and antioxidants that keep dry skin and uneven skin tone issues at bay. Citrus fruits: Winters are the time when fresh juicy and refreshing citrus fruits such as oranges, tangerine, grapefruit, and lime are available in abundance. These vitamin C rich fruits can be excellent winter superfoods. Some common benefits provided are - Vitamin C can help boost immunity, the water content can help keep the body hydrated, and fibre can help improve digestion. They are essential to boost immunity and help in safeguarding the body against minor ailments. The change in weather demands a change in diet. With Covid cases on a rise again, it poses a lot of health problems as we continue to work from home and there is less physical activity. Joint problems, weight gain, vitamin D deficiency, constipation are some of the common problems people are facing during selfquarantine. With winter stepping in, dry skin and hair fall also become a cause of concern. Enriching your diet with nutrient-rich foods may help deal with all these problems and let you enjoy good immunity, good skin and overall good heal th.

Fun Facts on Daily Cat Behaviour
f you are following our series, then you may have noticed that we have been discussing peculiar behaviours, seen in dogs, and explaining their meanings and origins. This month we have decided to change gears and mention a few behaviours related to our feline companions as well.
You may have noticed your cat chattering his teeth time to time. This behaviour is completely normal and according to experts could have several explanations behind it. Most likely cats will exhibit this jaw movement when they are staring out the window at a bird or insect. Other times they may also display this is when getting ready to catch a toy that they are being teased with. It is highly likely that teeth chattering occurs naturally as an instinct of the feline getting ready to catch its prey and involuntary, natural jaw movement occurs as a process of preparation as a predator. Another explanation is that they are frustrated and chatter their teeth as a sign of being fed up with the fact that they cannot go outside and catch the bird they have been eyeing for some time. We often feel great affection towards our cats when they decide to come rub against our legs. We see it naturally as a sign of love and care. However, this behaviour is quite opposite of what we believe! In fact, cats have a surge of pheromones that are released time to time, which is a process known as ‘blunting’. While they are blunting, they will go rub against their owner as an indication of feeling superior and leaving their mark on that area. Similarly, this can be seen parallel to the action of them urinating in certain areas to allow others to know this is their territory, by leaving their scent in that location. Next time your cat rubs against you in this manner, keep in mind that he or she is simply saying that they are the boss! Cats will often go out and hunt items. They are natural predators from their ancestral chain. However, after a certain time you may have noticed that your cat chooses to bring hunted items to you as an offering or gift. This can range anywhere from a dead
24
FEBRUARY 2022
rodent, insect, bird or even a toy. This offering is a symbol that represents that this cat accepts you as part of its inner circle and gives you gifts as a sign of respect. When a cat brings you an unpleasant meal it has just killed, this is an indication of it wishing to share a meal with you that it hunted personally. The act of sharing a prey that it hunted is the greatest honour you can receive from your furry companion! We hope you enjoyed this month’s article. Please stay tuned for next month’s issue where we will continue discussing more peculiar behaviours seen in cats and what the true meanings behind their actions are.

COMBATING LABOR SHORTAGE AMID COVID CRISIS
A
mid the spike in the cases of COVID-19 and Omicron (new variant), Canadian labor market has been hit hard and the rise in labor shortage has just worsened the economy. The surge in the labor shortage has been observed since past few months and employers are struggling to recruit people who are willing to work. It seems like the economy has started failing to recover from the unexpected rise of unemployment cases. This entire scenario has been quite challenging for the employers as they are losing business, new clients and money. In response to the dearth of competent employees in the labor market, the employers are facing challenges such as to increase the wage rate to attract more employees to work for the company and to keep the employees already working in the company. The various sectors such as health, hospitality, transportation, construction, airlines and food service have been hit hard by the pandemic. Stat Canada has reported that BC, Quebec and Ontario are the provinces that have suffered a major labor shortage. More than 30% of Canadian businesses have reported labor shortage last month (a report by Deloitte Canada). Not only this, in response to the labor shortage, the employers have resort to hiring of temporary foreign workers from outside Canada. However, the suffering and challenges have risen altogether for the employers as the processing of these applications by IRCC and
www.entertainmentmagazine.ca
Service Canada have been delayed. In some instances, applications have been in process for over a year and no decisions are being rendered by the concerned officials (reported by anonymous). This has been frustrating for the respective employers and employees and unfortunately, this is not being addressed as it should be. It has been estimated that it will take months for the aforementioned sectors to recover from the labor shortage once the situation resumes back to normal. By: R. Kaur

10 ways to get
fit this year There are many ways to give a healthy start to the new year. Follow these tips:
Eat more whole foods: Making a conscious effort to fill your plate with more whole foods (such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and pure protein sources) and less processed foods is the easiest approach to start a healthy year (like bread, cheese, processed meats & pre-made frozen meals). Choose a sustainable Diet: Rather than following fad diets that promise quick results while jeopardizing your metabolism and mental wellness. Diets that you won’t be able to maintain in the long run once you’ve reached your ideal weight without feeling deprived. Then worrying that your weight will return once you resume eating without a fixed diet is not worth the effort. Choose a dietary plan that not only satisfies your objectives but also fits into your daily routine. Delivers slow but long-lasting benefits. It’s a privilege to have a diet that may become your lifestyle rather than a “diet.” Where you may strike a balance between your social life and your occasional treats without jeopardizing your progress or making you feel bad. Making long-term health a priority, developing self-awareness, and eating intuitively is your recipe to a “sustainable transformation”. Increase Vitamin D intake: Vitamin D supplementation is important not just for bone and immune system health, but it can also help avoid chronic health problems (such as heart disease, diabetes, and some malignancies) and even encourage hair growth. As a result, make sure to catch some sun for at least 15-20 minutes per day and complement with a vitamin D supplement (no more than 4,000IU per day). Incorporate movement into your daily routine: It doesn’t matter if you’re doing a workout, playing a sport, or simply
28
FEBRUARY 2022
going for a walk. For maximum functioning, it’s critical to get your blood flowing and stimulate oxygen delivery to every region of your body. Make it a point to include some type of physical activity in your everyday routine. Prioritize sleep: We often end up preferring socializing above sleeping as overworking has become a badge of honour in our society. We push our bodies to extremes by depriving them of sleep and over-caffeinating them, which leads to anxiety and weakened immunological systems. Sleep deprivation and poor quality sleep can cause major health issues like insulin resistance, neurological issues, weight gain, depression, and anxiety, to mention a few. As a result, it is critical that we obtain 7-8 hours of excellent sleep each night in order for our bodies to function at their best. Reduce stress: Stress is a major contributor to practically all health problems, from heart disease, obesity, and diabetes to digestive disorders (such as IBS, GERD, and gastrointestinal problems) and depression. Internal and external sources of
stress are both possible. Although the ultimate goal should be to eliminate all stress. However, while it is virtually impossible, you may reduce stress by engaging in activities such as meditation, yoga, deep breathing, exercise, counselling, or whatever else you enjoy to help you disengage from the outside world and reconnect with yourself. “Me time” is not a self-indulgent indulgence. Form a morning routine: Having a morning routine is similar to showing up for yourself and prioritizing yourself. It’s the same as honouring yourself and prioritizing your needs. Following a morning routine allows you to get your day off to a good start by allowing you to be in tune with yourself before dealing with the rest of the world. This way, rather of allowing your day to control you, you take charge of it. Say your daily affirmations: Speaking your daily affirmations aloud will not turn you into a narcissist, but it will help you stay on track with the proper energy and mindset. Positive self-talk has the ability
to transform unbelief, self-doubt, negative thinking, and body shaming attitudes into gratitude and romanticizing your existence. So don’t dismiss the importance of positive affirmations. Set daily intentions: Setting your daily aims has a lot more impact than you might believe. It opens up our receptivity, manifests, and sends out what we want to bring into our lives. Intentions provide us with a sense of direction as well as motivation and inspiration to attain our goals. Together, writing down your intentions and saying your affirmations for the day creates the most effective visualizing tool for staying focused and committed to your goals. 10. Choose passion over perfection: Stop doing things half-heartedly. As a result, you put in more effort and become frustrated. However, if you are enthusiastic about a job or work, you should be able to complete it with less effort and more joy. Because you’ll give it your all and put your heart and soul into it. You are defined by your passion. It elevates you and allows you to shine. By: Veronica Kumra

I forbade her several times not to talk about Sam. I was afraid mom-in-law might overhear our conversation. I was completely confused, and I could never reply to Meenu in this regard. About four weeks passed. “Sonia, sign these papers.”, mom-in-law said and gave me a bunch of papers and a pen. “What are these papers for?”, I asked mom while signing without reading anything on them.

I talked to Baljit’s dad. Both I and Baljit’s
dad want Nancy to get her father’s love.”, Mom-in-law explained in plain words. “How is that possible, mom? What will people say?”, I expressed my near denial. “Although I belong to old traditions, I cannot ruin your future for any social stigma. I have talked to Baljit and his father. Baljit has sent these papers from India after signing them. Just sign them and introduce Sam to me ASAP. People are never happy with anyone. We will do our best to help both of you to reunite.”, mom said. Continued in next edition

many characters he could play for the screen, “There is no end to how much I can explore and how many different people I can become. I hope I continue that and if I keep doing the same thing, then I am stagnating. I should probably take a sabbatical, gather more life experiences, put more different characters into my jholi and then come back to work.”
ollywood star Ranveer Singh, who was most recently seen in cricket drama ‘83’, refuses to be put in a box creatively.
The ‘Bajirao Mastani’ actor likes to be limitless and explore his craft in his constant pursuit for artistic excellence. Ranveer reveals, “My constant endeavour is such that you cannot put me in a box. You can’t define me. I don’t wish to be defined because I feel defining something by its fundamental nature would be limiting me. As a creative person I would like to believe that I have no limits. That I the possibilities within my craft are limitless, that they be infinite.”
On the work front, he has a string of upcoming releases including YRF’s ‘Jayeshbhai Jordaar’, filmmaker Shankar’s remake of his blockbuster ‘Anniyan’, Rohit Shetty’s ‘Cirkus’ and Karan Johar’s ‘Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahan’.

Kumail Nanjiani was intimidated by massive scale of ‘Eternals’
P
akistani-American actor and comedian Kumail Nanjiani who plays Kingo in ‘Eternals’, initially was intimidated by the film and its cast and crew given its mammoth scale.
But soon he bonded well with everyone on the sets and had an experience of a lifetime while shooting for Chloe Zhao’s superhero film. Recollecting his experience, Kumail, who plays Kingo, a master at combat in the film, said, “It was a little intimidating at first. It’s like we’re supposed to have been family for thousands and thousands of years, and I don’t really know anybody. But everybody was so excited to do this movie and excited to be a group together that we all gelled very quickly.” He further said, “And as we gelled and developed our personal relationships, the relationships between the characters kept evolving too. So, to me, one of the most satisfying parts of doing this movie was working with this incredible ensemble of actors and figuring out the relationships between all the characters.” Expressing his excitement about working with the stellar cast of ‘Eternals’, he said, “It’s really remarkable. What a great group of actors and human beings. I’ve truly fallen in love with all of them.” Source: IANS

How to cover stretch marks with makeup
S
tretch marks may be a fact of life, and while they are certainly nothing to be ashamed of, there may be times where you would like your stretch marks to be out of sight.
Whether there’s a special occasion you’re getting all dolled up for or you simply want to feel most confident on the beach, the right makeup products can be used to cover stretch marks temporarily. Colour correct Using the color wheel you learned about back in elementary school, you can easily neutralize any unwanted tones on your hair or skin. When it comes to covering stretch marks, it’s important to consider their tone. If they’re new and purplish, you’ll want to use a yellow color corrector to cancel out the color of the stretch marks. If your stretch marks are older, you may not need to color correct them as they’re likely already flesh-toned, albeit lighter than the rest of your

skin.
Use full-coverage foundation Of course, a full-coverage foundation is essential for covering stretch marks. Choose a fullcoverage formula that contains high-load pigments and can cover everything from scars to hyperpigmentation. Set your makeup After expertly covering your stretch marks, you wouldn’t want your makeup to budge throughout the day. To keep everything in place and get an extra boost of coverage, use a fluffy powder brush to sweep on a setting powder. Apply self-tanner While not makeup, self-tanner is a holy grail beauty product that can help disguise the look of stretch marks. Not to mention, you’ll get the appearance of beautifully bronzed skin in the process. By IANS with inputs from L’Oreal Paris USA

All you need to know about iron deficiency anaemia doctor will let you know the correct dose for you. Iron is also available in liquid form for infants and children. To improve the chances that your body will absorb the iron in the tablets, you may be instructed to:
Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji
MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC
4 Take iron tablets on an empty stomach: If possible, take your iron tablets when your stomach is empty. However, because iron tablets can upset your stomach, you may need to take your iron tablets with meals.
Cont. from last edition Prevention You can reduce your risk of iron deficiency anemia by choosing ironrich foods. Choose iron-rich foods Foods rich in iron include: 4 Red meat, pork and poultry 4 Seafood 4 Beans 4 Dark green leafy vegetables, such as spinach 4 Dried fruit, such as raisins and apricots 4 Iron-fortified cereals, breads and pastas 4 Peas Your body absorbs more iron from meat than it does from other sources. If you choose to not eat meat, you may need to increase your intake of iron-rich, plant-based foods to absorb the same amount of iron as does someone who eats meat. Choose foods containing vitamin C to enhance iron absorption You can enhance your body’s absorption of iron by drinking citrus juice or eating other foods rich in vitamin C at the same time that you eat high-iron foods. Vitamin C in citrus juices, like orange juice, helps your body to better absorb dietary iron. Vitamin C is also found in: 4Broccoli 4Grapefruit 4Kiwi 4Leafy greens 4Melons 4Oranges 4Peppers 4Strawberries 4Tangerines 4Tomatoes Preventing iron deficiency anemia in infants To prevent iron deficiency anemia in infants, feed your baby breast milk or iron-fortified formula for the first year. source of iron for babies and isn’t recommended for infants under 1 year. After age 6 months, start feeding your baby iron-fortified cereals or pureed meats at least twice a day to boost iron intake. After one year, be sure children don’t drink more than 20 ounces (591 milliliters) of milk a day. Too much milk often takes the place of other foods, including those that are rich in iron. Diagnosis To diagnose iron deficiency anemia, your doctor may run tests to look for: 4 Red blood cell size and colour: With iron deficiency anemia, red blood cells are smaller and paler in color than normal. 4 Hematocrit: This is the percentage of your blood volume made up by red blood cells. Normal levels are generally between 35.5 and 44.9 percent for adult women and 38.3 to 48.6 percent for adult men. These values may change depending on your age. 4 Hemoglobin: Lower than normal hemoglobin levels indicate anemia. The normal hemoglobin range is generally defined as 13.2 to 16.6 grams (g) of hemoglobin per deciliter (dL) of blood for men and 11.6 to 15. g/dL for women. 4 Ferritin: This protein helps store iron in your body, and a low level of ferritin usually indicates a low level of stored iron. Additional diagnostic tests If your bloodwork indicates iron deficiency anemia, your doctor may order additional tests to identify an underlying cause, such as:
4 Endoscopy: Doctors often check for bleeding from a hiatal hernia, an ulcer or the stomach with the aid of endoscopy. In this procedure, a thin, lighted tube equipped with a video camera is passed down your throat to your stomach. This allows your doctor to view the tube that runs from your mouth to your stomach (esophagus) and your stomach to look for sources of bleeding. 4 Colonoscopy: To rule out lower intestinal sources of bleeding, your doctor may recommend a procedure called a colonoscopy. A thin, flexible tube equipped with a video camera is inserted into the rectum and guided to your colon. You’re usually sedated during this test. A colonoscopy allows your doctor to view inside some or all of your colon and rectum to look for internal bleeding. 4 Ultrasound: Women may also have a pelvic ultrasound to look for the cause of excess menstrual bleeding, such as uterine fibroids. Your doctor may order these or other tests after a trial period of treatment with iron supplementation. Treatment To treat iron deficiency anemia, your doctor may recommend that you take iron supplements. Your doctor will also treat the underlying cause of your iron deficiency, if necessary. Iron supplements Your doctor may recommend overthe-counter iron tablets to replenish the iron stores in your body. Your
4 Don’t take iron with antacids: Medications that immediately relieve heartburn symptoms can interfere with the absorption of iron. Take iron two hours before or four hours after you take antacids. 4 Take iron tablets with vitamin C: Vitamin C improves the absorption of iron. Your doctor might recommend taking your iron tablets with a glass of orange juice or with a vitamin C supplement. Iron supplements can cause constipation, so your doctor may also recommend a stool softener. Iron may turn your stools black, which is a harmless side effect. Iron deficiency can’t be corrected overnight. You may need to take iron supplements for several months or longer to replenish your iron reserves. Generally, you’ll start to feel better after a week or so of treatment. Ask your doctor when to have your blood rechecked to measure your iron levels. To be sure that your iron reserves are replenished, you may need to take iron supplements for a year or more. Treating underlying causes of iron deficiency If iron supplements don’t increase your blood-iron levels, it’s likely the anemia is due to a source of bleeding or an iron-absorption problem that your doctor will need to investigate and treat. Depending on the cause, iron deficiency anemia treatment may involve: 4 Medications, such as oral contraceptives to lighten heavy menstrual flow 4 Antibiotics and other medications to treat peptic ulcers 4 Surgery to remove a bleeding polyp, a tumor or a fibroid If iron deficiency anemia is severe, you may need iron given intravenously or you may need blood transfusions to help replace iron and hemoglobin quickly. www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

‘Carbon’: A refreshingly fresh investigative thriller that impresses audience has no trouble in understanding the emotion the director is looking to convey.
Duration: 125 minutes. Director: Srinuvasan Cast: Vidhaarth, Dhanya B., Marimuthu and Munar Ramesh.
Vidhaarth as Shankar is just outstanding in the film, which incidentally happens to be his 25th. He plays the part to perfection and wins your heart hands down.
Rating: ***1/2 Director Srinuvasan’s ‘Carbon’ is a refreshingly fresh investigative thriller that keeps you hooked from start to finish, thanks to an innovative plot that has some really interesting twists right till the very end.
Dhanya B, who appears in the film just before the intermission, is perfect for the role and delivers a commendable performance. The reason why the second half is as intense as the first is primarily because of Dhanya’s characterisation and contribution.
The film’s story revolves around Shankar (Vidaarth), a wannabe policeman who ends up taking up a job in a private firm because of a quarrel with his dad (played by Marimuthu).
Maarimuthu as Vidhaarth’s dad delivers a commendable performance. The care and concern that he showcases while appearing to be strict to his son is just so adorable.
Shankar has a strange gift. He often has dreams and more importantly, his dreams come true. One night, the man dreams of his dad being hit by a black SUV. The nightmare leaves him shaken. He wakes up breaking into a sweat and frantically begins to search for his dad only to realise that he has had an accident just as he had dreamed. Shankar rushes his unconscious dad to the hospital, where doctors tell him that it’s imperative that they perform a surgery that is going to cost him a fortune. The only way out for Shankar will be to find the person responsible for the accident and claim the insurance amount. With the cops not making any serious effort to find the driver of the vehicle, Shankar realises he will have to carry out the investigation himself It is at this point that one
night, sitting beside his dad’s bed, he dozes off out of sheer exhaustion. That’s when he has a dream in which he sees the SUV that caused the accident. The door of the SUV opens and just as the driver is to get out, Shankar is woken up by the woman who cleans the hospital ward. In the desperate hope that the same dream could reappear if he did all the tasks that he did that particular day, Shankar attempts a repeat the next day. Things don’t work out initially and the dream does not appear. Waiting for the dream to recur, Shankar, with the help of his sharp sense of observation, realises that it was not just a
hit-and-run case; it was actually an attempt to murder his dad. Who would want to murder his dad and why would they want to do it? Does Shankar find out the criminal? And does he save his dad? ‘Carbon’ gives you the answers. The film is a gripping thriller and full marks to director Srinuvasan for having told the story in a neat and compact manner. Half of the credit for the film being tight and gripping should go to editor K.L. Praveen for his brilliant cuts. There are absolutely no unnecessary scenes and the story moves at a blistering pace, right from the word ‘go’. Within the first 10 minutes of the film, the director showcases the strong bond of love between the father and son, who despite not being on talking terms with each other, deeply care about one another. And within the same period, he also explains everything about Shankar’s dreams and their tendency to come true. Sam CS’s background score provides ample support to the director who is looking to narrate a gripping thriller. His score captures the mood and amplifies it, making sure the

Director Srinuvasan, while narrating a thrilling entertainer, also actually highlights a fact that Tamil cinema has often chosen to misinterpret. It looks to set the record straight with regard to dad-son relationships and highlights that for every son his dad is a hero. And that invariably, sons love their dads as much as their mothers, if not more. Some of the dialogues in the film are deep and hit the nail on the head. For instance, there is this scene in which the heroine asks the hero, “Sons are supposed to be close to their mothers. You seem to be different.” To this, the hero replies, “When a man’s mother passes away, her place is filled by his wife. But when a man’s dad passes away, that place remains vacant. Which is why sons miss dads a lot more than their mothers. The position that dads hold in a son’s life is special.” It is not as if the film has no problems. There are some lapses in logic towards the end of the film. Also, the manner in which cops are showcased in the film dents the realism somewhat. But these are small lapses which can be forgiven. On the whole, ‘Carbon’ is a good, neat, sleek investigative thriller that is definitely worth your time. By:Manigandan K.R. www.entertainmentmagazine.ca
