Pavittar Singh Mahal

T

his quotation is really a fitting commendation to the untiring efforts of this selfmade personality, who lost his father at the tender age of 8 years - Pavittar Singh, famous among his family, friends and Indian diaspora as Pav. In sport parlance he is lovingingly known as Shambhu Bharoliwala. As I settled to talk, I was mesmerized by his athletically fit body with biceps bulging out of seams. When asked about his journey to Canada way back in 1993, he lost his connection partly with me and started delving deep into the past, and while rummaging through his difficult time, with a lump in his throat he stated, “My maternal uncle S. Surjit Singh Mahal- and my maternal grandfather, S Bhakhshish Singh (the planner)- brought me here. My widowed mother also consented, though a little reluctantlybeing the only son, in the light of the fact that my hard work will fructify better in Canada – being a land of opportunity. “When young teenagers enter adulthood, they bask in the glory of their supportive father. It was my bad luck that my reverend father was not with me when I needed him the most to shape my career. But I consider myself very lucky to have my mum and maternal uncle[s] with me till date”, he says. “During my teenage years, I went to learn the job as a Car Repair Mechanic during my spare time in the evenings and weekends, after finishing my school as a daily routine.” “I worked for over a decade in this field with various establishments where my work was appreciated. It was during these formative years that I learned the tricks of the trade as well as trade”, Confabulated Pav. In 2013, Pav took the final leap to see his dream takes shape, as he ventured to open JP Transmissions in Surrey. The profession to which he gave his youth- the best part of life professionally- has culminated into a business which is now in top gear. He is a participative owner who leads from the front. Being an owner and shop floor Foreman, he leads his team of 9

he is very much attached to his three kids, his better half and reverend mother Sardarni Avtar kaur. A son of a philanthropic father S Karnail Singh, Pav has proved to be a chip of the old block as he is ever ready to help the needy. This God fearing, self- made Karamyogi is a pet lover too. Dogiliciously, he boasts of his three Pit bulls in his possession. With age on his side, I wish him huge success to serve the cause of humanity.

Segregated FundsA Wise Approach To Investing Money For Future Needs

I

n the current volatile market environment, I advise my clients to save wisely for the future. We all work for the prosperity of our family and also very well know that financial security can provide a large umbrella of physical, and emotional protection for us at the times of need. Different people have different future financial needs and goals for their investment; that can be for retirement, child’s wedding, buying a home, or financial safety of the family upon sudden death. Now, the question is how can we assure that the different financial goal can be achieved more efficiently and in secure manner? By making wise investments decisions for the future, consistent & thoughtfully over several years can be an effective strategy to accumulate wealth and achieve financial goals. Investing hard-earned money in investment products that gives maximum favourable returns and assurance for the principal amount that is invested. Due to psychological, historical viewpoint & systematically advertising, majority of people believe Banks are the only financial institution that provide investment options, and it is safe to invest in a bank. This is a myth simply because they do not know that there are other options available which not only give the investor all the investment options that Banks provide but also provide other benefits under the protection of Insurance Laws. Protection of insurance laws give peace of mind to investor that their principal invested amount not only has the chance of higher growth to achieve financial goals but in the event of down trend of the market or sudden death it is protected 75% to 100%, under the provisions of the contract. Due to lack of knowledge about the benefits of protection to investor’s investment in Insurance Companies, still Banks are the holder of huge amounts in RRSP or TFSA account under Mutual Funds that have no protection on the principal invested amount. Insurance Companies provide similar opportunity of growth under Segregated Funds for an investment as the Banks provide under Mutual Funds but with so many additional benefits under the Insurance Law. Let us discuss this in details a bit : Segregated funds, is an investment option provided by life insurance companies only, because they have protection and additional benefits under Insurance Laws. This means your money, not only has chances

of higher growth as per your risk tolerance, but also has the protection around your invested money, under the provision of insurance laws for Maturity & Death benefit guarantee provided by the insurance company. This protection in not provided to your investment in banks under Mutual Funds. 4 First, Under Maturity Guarantee provisions, Segregated funds, provide between 75% to 100% guarantee to your invested money. That means, in downtrend market, say by chance around your retirement or at the time of withdrawal after the maturity date if your portfolio is below than your initially invested money, your money is protected at least up to your principal amount as per the provisions of maturity guarantee. For instance you invested $100000, upon maturity due to down trend of market, money in your portfolio left is $80000, insurance company will put $20000 and give you $100000 if the guarantee is 100%. If due to growth money is more than $100000 you will get the higher amount. So this protection is for the bad times which is not offered under Mutual Fund investment. Similarly, Under Death Benefit Guarantee provisions, upon death 75% to 100% of your principal investment has the protection too, in downtrend market. These Guarantees takes away worries of losing your initially invested money, which makes our investment option more attractive & safe. Please remember this does not apply to a Mutual Fund investment.

4 Bypassing Probate Laws - The second biggest advantage of segregated fundsunder insurance laws, is that they ensure a speedy, hassle free and confidential transfer of funds to spouse or beneficiary in case of untimely death of the investor, usually within 30 days or so by-passing taxation or probate laws under Insurance law protection. Please remember this does not apply to a Mutual Fund investment. 4 Creditor Protection to investmentAnother major advantage of segregated funds is that it offers creditor protection for the beneficiary (family member); no creditor can take away from the benefit of your family member, the amount goes directly to the beneficiary. However, please make sure one does not do a Segregated Fund investment for the sole purpose of creditor protection. Please remember this does not apply to a Mutual Fund investment. 4 Reset feature of Investment Many insurance companies provide this extra feature of resetting principal upon growth and apply

guaranties to the new amount after reset. This feature may further move the maturity Guarantee date. Again, please remember this does not apply to a Mutual Fund investment. The above mentioned features of investment makes it very attractive for the investors however, still majority of people do not know about all this and make their RRSP or TFSA investments in Banks. Being an Insurance & Investment Advisor I can notonly advise you how to grow your hard earned & saved dollars in an investment, but also can show you the way to grow it safely protecting the hard earned money you are investing. Please come to my office or call me to make an obligation free appointment so that I can tell you more about the hidden facts of the Financial Industry. Forfurther information, contact me at 604-9966862 or email me at sandeepahuja@ punjabinsurance.ca ** Don’t forget the deadline to gain benefit of RRSP- March 01, 2017!!

The ‘feel good’ fashion mantra

F

eel good and look good. Look good and feel good. What comes first . Is it a paradox? Well to look good one must feel good. To feel good one must feel comfortable. Are you comfortable in what you are wearing be it the clothes the perfume or even the tiniest of clip in your hair. The feel good factor is so important when it comes to dressing up. No matter how well a shirt or a dress fits you, no matter what brand or designer-wear or how expensive are the clothes or shoes you wear, it gives you away when you don’t feel comfortable in them. All that worry and edginess in wearing uncomfortable stuff shows on your face, in your walk and in your body movement. It plays on your mind - mood and expression. And all your effort - time energy money - to look good fall away wasted. As much as a comfort level in a relationship between two people is required, the relationship between you and the things you wear needs maximum comfort and care. As in any relationship, many things make up the feel good factor. The dress, design, pattern, print, colour, and size matters. All these should suit your complexion, body, shape, height and weight and the cut of your face. The right match also matters. The shirt and trouser or the top and skirts or the shoes, bags and accessories. Also, the colour and shades of your make-up, nail paint and jewellery. The colour of the things you wear should match or complement each other. Not only clothes, but also every little thing you wear reveals a lot about you and your personality. So sometimes clothes and make-up that doesn’t go with your personality can make

you feel uncomfortable. Wearing the right clothes for an occasion and places is important. Give attention to casuals and formals, office wear, travel wear, beach wear, party wear, etc. Don’t forget the perfumes and sprays. Fragrance they say is the essence of beauty. So wear good sprays and perfume. Smell good and feel good for that pleasant look on your face. Also be conscious of the trend and fashion. While simple clothes can make you comfortable, out-of-date dresses can make you feel out of place and uneasy. However, you may look bad even in the trendiest outfits, hairstyles or beauty products if they don’t suit you and you don’t feel comfortable. So try to strike a balance. Wear comfy clothes and shoes and feel good for that right poise, confidence and a beautiful you.

Elegant hairstyles for long hair

Y

ou may have beautiful long tresses. But looking to surprise everyone with a new look every festive time without having to spend too much time and money can be quite a task. However, one can add a fresh touch of elegance or a quirky twist to our plain Jane look with these few funky hairstyle tricks up the sleeves: Fishtail friendship braid: Make a ponytail at the nape of your neck with an elastic band that you can cut away at the end. Divide your ponytail into two sections. Separate a small section of your hair from the outer edge near the band and cross it over to the other side. Repeat with a small section from the other side. Continue overlapping pieces from both sides of your ponytail all the way down till the end. Try to grab the same size about a half inch parts from each side and maintain evenness. Once you have woven to the ends secure the braid with another rubber band. Cut the elastic band at the base of your ponytail.

Dainty waterfall braid: Starting near your hairline pick up three strands of hair as if you are starting a French braid. Cross the strand closest to the top of your head over the middle section. Cross the bottom section over the new middle section. Cross the new top section over the new middle section and then the bottom over the middle. Drop the middle strand down so it blends in with the rest of your hair. Pick up a piece of hair about the same size from near your part. This strand becomes your new top section. Cross it over the middle to continue the braid. Cross the bottom strand over the new section and repeat second step to the last step all the way around your head. Secure the braid behind your ear with a bobby pin.

pins on all its sides to form a bun. Similarly fix the tail. Settle the extra hair which may come out of the bun. Use hair spray for shiny look and add hair accessories to enhance your look. Criss-cross bun: Section off bottom portion of hair. Secure the bottom portion into ponytail. Tease ponytail lightly. Roll teased ponytail upward and secure with pins on sides. Section off hair at crown tease lightly to create some volume. Twist section loosely and pin at the top of rolled section. Split side section in half. Twist section and secure with pin on opposite side of roll. Repeat with twist and pin. Twist and pin the last section. Pin loose pieces as you like.

Vintage curls: Start at the top and work down with the curling iron. Make sure that the top and the middle get just as much heat as the ends so that they don’t fall flat. Let the curl cool until the hair feel cold. When you are done with your whole head brush out the curl until you see the pattern form. Low ballerina bun: Pull your hair back neatly into a ponytail at the back of the head or higher using a brush to avoid bumps. Secure ponytail tightly with hair elastic. Twist the ponytail as you gradually wrap it around the hair elastic creating a tight coiled circle inserting u shaped hair pins. Be sure that your hair pins contain hair from both the head and the ponytail to hold your bun close to your head. Once you have created your bun wrap your hair net around it with bobby pins. Spray entire head with a hair spray to control stray hair. Rough low knot: Gather all the hair low on

the neck in a ponytail and secure with an elastic. Loop the tail of the pony through elastic half way leaving several inches of the tail out. Rough up the loop portion with your fingers by tugging on pieces of hair to make the knot fuller and more textured. Take part of the tail and twist it around the loop to cover the hair elastic. Secure the end of the tail on the underside of the elastic with a couple of bobby pins to finish the style. This style can be as loose and messy or as neat as you like. French twist: Comb your hair and separate a section of hair neatly from the central region of the top of your head. Hold using side pins. Again comb your hair entirely including the separately held section and hold them together the same way you do while making a pony. Hold the base of the pony and twist the pony so that it covers your left hand fingers. Now remove your left hand from the centre of the twisted pony keeping it tight and fix it at the top using bobby

Down glamorous wave: Apply a plum size amount of styling mousse into your hair from the tips to the roots. Comb through to distribute evenly. Heat a one inch diameter curly iron to the hottest setting possible. If you have thin hair heat the curling iron to medium heat to prevent burning. Beginning at the top of your crown comb out sections of hair no wider than the length of the curling iron. Open the clamp of the curling iron and wrap the tips of the hair around the clamp and secure. Holding the iron at a slightly horizontal angle roll the hair up to the scalp. Hold for five seconds and then open the clamp. Slide the hair out the clamp and set the curling iron down. Pin the curl to your head with a bobby pin. Repeat the process of combing a small section of hair curling it and then pinning the curl to your head. The curls will remain pinned to your head until your entire head is covered in curls. Coat the pinned curls with a hair spray and wait for 10 minutes. Release the curls one by one and let them fall.

novel FEBRUARY 2017

A Girl in a Whirl Contd. from previous issue (Part 6) “Sonia, India and Canada are two completely different worlds. In Canada, a contractor is himself the owner and has to be the best laborer.”, Sam explained. “Really!”, I exclaimed. “Yes, Sonia! When I went to Canada seven years ago, I also used to think as you do today. Life is very different in India.”, Sam said. Sam’s argument sounded genuine to me. “But Sam, I don’t like your drinking. I cannot tolerate the foul smell of alcohol.”, I pointed. “This is a pretty good quality brand. It doesn’t smell bad.”, Sam emptied the whole peg in just one gulp. I was finding it very hard to handle Sam. “Let me go to the washroom.”, Sam said and left. Lost in my worrisome thoughts, I started sipping my soup. It had been long Sam hadn’t returned. I looked around. He was having the last gulp of his peg at the restaurant bar. “God knows how many pegs he might have gulped.”, I looked at him angrily and got very upset. He also espied me see him. I recalled Sam’s last night’s

condition. I felt very tense. I felt like leaving Sam alone there. “What if Sam did the same what he had done the last night? He would embarrass me publically here.”, I thought and decided to leave for my hotel without Sam. I got up and walked to the door. Sam rushed to me and, clutching my arm very tightly, stopped me. As Sam had sprinted, many people looked at us to see some interesting show. Sam’s grip was so strong that my strong arm began aching. I asked Sam in a very controlled tone to release my arm.

eventually Sam said seeing me so quiet. I raised my head a bit and tried to control myself. I had a glass of water. I very coolly convinced Sam that I wanted to go to washroom. I was afraid he would make hullaballoo again. I looked into his eyes until he was fully convinced that I was speaking the truth. Down with my concerns, I sat there in the washroom. I was dead sure Sam would be in the same condition of the previous night again. I came out of the washroom and reached my car hiding myself from Sam and. I asked the driver to take me to the hotel. Before the driver asked me anything, I told him that I was feeling unwell and he could come back to pick up Sam. And I put my cell phone on silent mode, as I knew Sam would call me soon. My phone started vibrating. I sent Sam a text message that I had reached the hotel. He could have his meal and the driver was going to pick him up later. I turned off my phone immediately because I didn’t want to indulge in any nonsense arguments with Sam. After sending the driver back, I ordered my meal into my room. After changing my clothes, I thought of telling my mom everything. At least, that would unburden my mind a bit. Contd. in next issue

novel half page english “What’s your problem, Sonia?”, Sam asked so loudly that almost all started looking at us in such a way as if they were waiting to see the next interesting scene. My anger began intensifying. “Release my arm, Sam. People are watching your circus.”, I said angrily looking into Sam’s eyes. Sam loosened his grip on my arm but didn’t release it. He tried to pull me to the table. I thought something and came back to the table myself. I sat there holding my head. I didn’t want to be a part of Sam’s circus anymore. Sam yapped for a few minutes. I didn’t respond at all. The waiter brought our meals. I didn’t lift my head up. “Ok Sonia!!!, have your meal.”,

Rangoon trailer: Bold, beautiful and classy, courtesy Kangana Ranaut

K

angana Ranaut is back and how. The lady is a scene stealer in every true sense. She looks terrific on screen, acts pretty well and gets the best dialogues to mouth. And you will see her do all of that once again in Rangoon. The just released trailer has the actress playing Jaanbaaz Julie, a leading female action star from 1940. From unleashing the hunter to shouting out ‘bloody hell’ in her ultra husky seductive voice to seducing her two leading men — Saif Alia Khan and Shahid Kapoor

(she even asks Shahid Kapoor if he wishes to join her while she is about to take a leak) — Kangana holds your gaze with her magnetic screen presence and ‘taalimaar’ dialogues. And not to forget, Kangana seems to have pushed the envelope as far as boldness goes with Rangoon. While kissing is routine, the actress appears to have done an almost frontal topless love-making scene with Shahid Kapoor. And we trust director Vishal Bhardwaj to have got the aesthetics right on this one. The movie is a period film set in 1940s in the good old Bombay before it takes a long travel to the east. Shahid and Saif play Kangana’s love interests and both actors are in their elements. While Saif is classy as he sports his aristocratic look with panache in the film, Shahid is all massy as he gets down and dirty. The neatly cut trailer establishes the relationship that Kangana shares with Saif and Shahid and gives ample space to all three actors to display their wares. Kangana looks equally at ease while romancing both the leading men. The face-off sequence between Shahid and Saif will be one of the most keenly awaited moments. The film will bring back memories of British India and an era gone by. Given Vishal’s penchant of extracting career best performances from every actor he has directed, one can expect to see just the same from the cast and crew of Rangoon.

8 tips to get your eye makeup right

H

aving the right kind of eye makeup is one thing, having it all in place is quite another ballgame. If you are facing problems like oily lids, uneven liner or racoon eyes, these pointers will guide you to do it right. Clean your eyelids Just like in painting, you need a clean canvas, aka, clean skin. While washing your face, ensure that the eyelid and eye area are clean. Use a primer The right eye base is important. Using a primer creates the right base and helps the eyeshadow and liner to stick to the skin, making it last longer. Don’t skip the concealer Using a concealer around the eye area will help hide flaws like dark circles and pigmentation. This will make your eye makeup pop out. Curl the lashes Curvy lashes open up the eyes, making them look bigger. It will make your mascara look more enticing. Shape your brows Well-groomed eyebrows play an important role. Brush your brow to make it look neat, and if it you have sparse hair, fill with the right eyebrow pencil. Then use a brow gel or highlighter if required. Use powder between coats of mascara

Yes, a trick that simple can make a lot of difference. After applying the first coat of mascara, try dusting your lashes lightly with some translucent powder. Then apply the second coat. The powder adds length and volume. Create prominent eyebrow arch Arched eyebrows look fab. If your eyebrows are flat, you can create the illusion of an arch by using a highlighter to trace the bottom line of your eyebrow. Blend it well. Make your eyeshadow pop Try mixing two or more colours when it comes to eyeshadows. Start with a base shadow that is neutral or closest to your skin tone. Create a base all over the eyelid and layer the darker shades on top of it.

Movie Review: Raees

Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Mahira Khan, Atul Kulkarni Director: Rahul Dholakia Raees, directed by Rahul Dholakia and starring Shah Rukh Khan, is the fascinating story of the rise and rise of a small time bootlegger into one of Gujarat’s most notorious liquor barons and also, ironically, into a revered Robin Hood-like figure. If you’ve ever wondered what the love child of a staunchly realistic filmmaker and Bollywood’s most unabashedly populist star might resemble, you’re looking at it. Dholakia, who wrote and directed the deeply affecting film Parzania, about a Parsi family caught in the midst of the Godhra riots of 2002, brings a thorough understanding of the times and the landscape the film is set in. Shah Rukh, meanwhile, who is also a co-producer on this project, seems clear about the tone he wants to take. The result is a mostly compelling drama that is fast paced, despite feeling over-plotted and bloated at times. We’re first introduced to our protagonist, Raees, as a young boy in Fatehpura in the 1970s. He is poor but industrious, and works as a runner to a local bootlegger. The signs are all there. He has a short temper, he holds on to grudges, and resents being referred to as ‘Battery’ although he wears oversized spectacles. By the time he’s older and has had some practice on the field smuggling alcohol in and out of the Prohibition state, he branches out to set up his own business, emboldened by his mother’s teaching that “no job is too small” and reassured by a mentor that he’s got a “baniye ka dimaag aur Miya bhai ki daring”. The film’s first half is riveting stuff as we watch our anti-hero expand his enterprise on the strength of his quick thinking and sheer ruthlessness. It is precisely these qualities that make him such a magnetic figure, but post interval it feels as if the writers decided to trade his grey shades and blunt his edges to make him more likeable. By now Raees has become a messiah

for his people, the mobster with a heart of gold, a staunchly secular humanist. The plot too slips into repetition and predictability, and characters like the corrupt chief minister and other venal politicians come off as caricatures. It is the presence of Nawazuddin Siddiqui, as Majmudar, an incorruptible police officer obsessed with taking Raees down, and the thrilling interplay between both men that keeps you invested despite these bumps. Exploiting his relationship with powerful political figures, Raees routinely thwarts Majmudar’s plans, but the cop remains steadfast in his resolve. The scenes between both actors, featuring some terrific clap-trap repartee, are easily the best bits in the film. Nawazuddin, who appears to be having a blast, cast against type and allowed to really sink his teeth into the part, once again reveals his gift for vastly improving a film by merely being in it. The other supporting cast doesn’t have it as good. Mahira Khan is confident as Raees’ love interest, but it’s not a role that requires any heavy lifting. Meanwhile, a consistently reliable Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub suffers on account of an underwritten role, reduced to a sidekick in the part of Raees’ loyal friend. Evidently inspired by the true-life story of Abdul Latif, the illegal liquor kingpin of Gujarat who was charged for his involvement in the 1993 blasts, Raees shrewdly steers clear of naming names and only hints at true events. Still, it’s a well-made film that benefits from Dholakia’s keen eye for period and atmospheric detail. Although crammed with too much plot, and overlong on account of a screenplay that could’ve done with further tightening, the film nevertheless offers enough to enjoy. As a throwback to those thrilling gangster films from the 70s, many starring Amitabh Bachchan and scripted by Salim-Javed, Raees delivers ample bang for your buck. I’m going with three out of five.

ishi Kapoor’s autobiography Khullam Khulla: Rishi Kapoor Uncensored is ready for the reads now. According to media agency, doting son Ranbir Kapoor has written a rather touching foreword for it. It reads… “I am closer to my mother. I feel that Dad modelled his relationship with me on the one he shared with his own father. And it is true that I have never crossed a certain line with him. But there is no sense of loss or vacuum here. I do wish sometimes that I could be friendlier with him or even spend more time with him.” “Sometimes I wish I could just pick up the phone and ask him, ‘Dad, how are you doing?’ But we do not have that. We do not have a phone relationship. When I get married and have children, I would want to change that dynamic with them. I don’t want my relationship with my children to be as formal as the one I have with my father. I want to be friendlier, be more connected, and spend more time with them than he did with me.” The formal relationship aside, Ranbir writes dearly about his love for daddy dearest, “I love my father dearly and have immense respect for him. I’m inspired by him and never want to let him down. I know he has only my best interests at heart. He also takes care of the financial side of my work. So we are more connected now. His confidence in me and my work makes me take pride in it. I persevere that much harder because of this. His belief and his encouragement are important to me.”

Is our Cookware slowly killing us?

A

s you already know that our health is greatly influenced by the food we eat, the method of our cooking and the cookware/utensils we use for it. The nutrient density of food – i.e. the quintessential vitamins, mineral set all in the food-can be easily damaged by overheating our foods. Experts are repeatedly telling us to not cook / overheat food more than 93 degree Celsius [200 degree Fahrenheit]. It will not be out of place to mention that the boiling point of water is 212 degree Fahrenheit [100 degree Celsius]. The most important mistake we continue to make is when, for cooking, we overheat our utensils, say when we fry food. Resultantly, the damaging Non Stick chemicals and heavy metals in the cookware start leaching into our food. These heavy metals from cookware alter enzymes and tastes in our body when consumed. Ultimately, they end up in our body and play havoc. One can buy the very best organic food, yet a wrong style of cooking can turn it into a slow poison. What cooking utensils are good for cooking? Some cooking utensils are better than others and some are just deadly for our body. Let us have a peep into their good and bad points: Aluminum cookware being not costly and its ability to effectively conduct heat - is one of the most common cookware in use. It can be very toxic as this heavy metal is slowly absorbed into all food cooked in it. And when we eat these foods aluminum ends up in our body. Excess aluminum in a human body has been associated with estrogen-driven cancers and Alzheimer’s disease in which thinking, memory and judgment is severely affected. Some cheaper pressure cookers are made only with aluminum as aluminum heats up quick and is a cheaper metal. The high end ones are made with a combination where the core is aluminum I’m guessing because it heats up quick and is encapsulated with stainless steel to allow an even cook. We need to buy a pressure cooker that has a higher ratio of stainless steel with a heavy base. A good pressure cooker is costly but it’s worth it. The amount of this metal that leaches into food from aluminum cookware depends on a variety of factors. Acidic foods- with PH. of less than 7, such as tomato sauce, prepared in aluminum cookware causes more aluminum to leach from this cookware compared to the effects of lower-acid foods, such as chicken or meat. Prolonged food contact with this metal -- such as longer cooking or storing in it -- also increases the amount that seeps into the food. Older aluminum pots leach more of this metal into foods compared to new pots and utensils. Ingested aluminum gets into the blood, most of which is excreted in the urine. However, people with severe kidney disease can retain higher amounts of aluminum in their bodies, which can lead to dementia, anemia or bone disease. While aluminum cookware may not pose health concerns, if we cook low-acid foods in these pots and pans, and not to store foods in aluminum containers. Anodized aluminum may be a better option. Anodization is a process that hardens the cookware surface, sealing the surface to prevent the leaching of aluminum into food. Care should also be taken to discard aluminum ware that is damaged in any way. If you have kidney disease, you are at greater risk for aluminum toxicity, so discuss ways to avoid excess aluminum with your reverend Doctor. Copper cookware is the choice of many because it conducts heat so well. Copper cookware releases copper into the food to be eaten. Though an adult body needs some amount of copper[900mcg per day] to function at peak, these copper utensils also have nickel in the coating, which is another toxic heavy metal and can be very allergenic to humans. Our body needs copper. Copper and iron help form red blood cells. Copper also helps to keep our blood vessels, nerves, immune system and bones healthy. Copper is found naturally in certain types of shellfish, whole grains, potatoes, dried fruit and dark leafy greens. Most people get enough copper in their daily

diets. Copper in large amounts is poisonous, though a specific toxic amount has not been determined yet. Copper pots that are lined with materials like tin and stainless steel can protect you from potential toxicity related to copper. The metal is easily dissolved by some foods and large amounts can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. According to the Food and Drug Administration, acidic foods cause copper on unprotected cookware to dissolve into foods. If you use unprotected copperlined pots and pans, look around the acidity of certain foods. Copper is easily dissolved into food so don’t leave food in it for too long or cook really acidic things. This is the reason why Copper cookware is having a lining of tin or stainless steel.

We are what we eat. By ignoring the life threatening ramifications of cookwarewe use daily and being in a tearing hurry to save some minutes in kitchen we have embraced Non Stick Cooking which may be good-for –bad health. While the manufacturer is laughing all the way to the bank –and in a bid to lengthen our pleasure time- for a bargain - we have given a nod, though unwillingly, for a sick life or a shorter life span.” Surinder Shaun Kochhar

This seasoning fills in the porous surface of the cookware. Now temperature matters. A medium heat temperature at 212 degree F is suggested. To eat in pure cast iron ware is beneficial. Experts are in tune on one front i.e. The danger begins when Teflon cookware is overheated, at temperatures above 500ºF, the breakdown begins and smaller chemical fragments are released. Even DuPont, inventor and manufacturer of Teflon, agrees that 500 degrees is the recommended maximum for Teflon cooking. Higher than that releasetoxic particles and gases, some of them are carcinogenic [lead to cancer]. \Teflon coating contain many fluoropolymers, the chemicals from which these toxic compounds come, are a big part of the coating

formula — and the very reason that foods don’t stick to nonstick. Heating Point Now how fast will a nonstick pan reach 500°F, the point at which its coating can start to decompose? At very high temperatures — 660° F and above — pans may more significantly decompose, emitting fumes strong enough to cause polymer-fume fever, a temporary flu-like condition marked by chills, headache, and fever. (The fumes won’t kill you — but they can kill pet birds, whose respiratory systems are more fragile.) At 680° F, Teflon releases at least six toxic gases, including two carcinogens, according to a study by the Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit watchdog organization In 2004, DuPont agreed to pay up to US$343 million to settle a lawsuit alleging that PFOA, used in the manufacture of Teflon at a certain plant in USA, had contaminated drinking water nearby. In the meantime, the EPA has reached an agreement with eight companies, including DuPont, to phase out the use of PFOA completely by 2015. The truth is since the launch of Nonstickcoating, the cancer disease have increased manifold. The logic is, when by mistake, we overheat these utensils[ for example during the frying method] the PFOA seep into food. Cook-Smart Precautions Some experts say that we can use nonstick safely, as long as we use it properly. Any food that cooks quickly on low or medium heat and covers most of the pan’s surface area (which brings down the pan’s temperature) is unlikely to cause problems; that includes foods like scrambled eggs, pancakes. Ladies and Foodies, love non- sticky ware as it is very easy to cook and clean thereafter. If one cannot resist the temptation of using Non Sticky cook ware keep these tips in mind without fail: 1. N ever preheat an empty pan. In a test, each of the three empty nonstick pans were heated on high and they reached temperatures above 500 degrees in less Cont. Next page

temperatures, the more we devastate the nutrients in the food and compromise the integrity and safety of the cookware. Cont. from Previous page than five minutes — and the cheapest, most lightweight pan got there in under two minutes. Even pans with oil in them can be problematic; as cheapest pan zoomed to more than 500 degrees in two and a half minutes. 2. Don’t cook on high heat. Most nonstick manufacturers, including DuPont, now advise consumers not to go above medium heat. Needless to add that DuPont thoughself-claims that Teflon does not pose any health risks, and that its guideline is simply meant to maximize the life of the product. For companies to make wrong claims is a reality though, so far it serve their purpose. To play it safe, set your knob to medium or low and don’t place your nonstick cookware over so-called power burners (anything above 12,000 BTUs on a gas stove or 2,400 watts on an electric range); those burners, seen more often in recent years, are intended for tasks like boiling a large pot of water quickly. 3. Ventilate your kitchen. When cooking, turn on the exhaust fan to help clear away any fumes. 4. Don’t broil or sear meats. Those techniques require temperatures more than 500 degree Fahrenheitwhat nonstick cannot usually handle. 5. Choose a heavier nonstick pan. Lightweight pans generally heat up fastest, so invest in heavier-weight cookware — it’s worth the extra money you pay. 6. Avoid chipping or damaging the pan. if pans do chip or flake, they may be more likely to release toxic compounds 7. Avoid scratching, use wooden spoons to stir food, avoid steel wool, and don’t stack these pans. (If you do, put a paper towel liner between them.) 8. As per Environmental Working Group, nonstick coatings can “reach 700 degrees Fahrenheit in as little as 3-5 minutes, releasing 15 toxic gases and chemicals, including two carcinogens.” 9. Additionally, overheated chemical nonstick finishes release fumes that cause an illness in humans known as polymer fume fever. The fumes are known to kill birds, and manufacturers warn against use of these pans in homes with pet birds 10. Never leave nonstick pans unattended on an open flame or other heat source, and keep cooking temperatures below 500 degrees. 11. Don’t use metal utensils on nonstick cookware, and wash the pans by hand using nonabrasive cleaners and sponges, not steel wool. Watch for wear and tear or flaking of any nonstick surface. 12. Keep pet birds out of the cooking area. DuPont’s estimate to use, based on moderate usage, is three to five years. Some experts advise replacing your nonstick cookware every couple of years. Or if the pan does become damaged, throw it out.Healthconscious peopleshould follow this practice as the affected piece might emit suspected carcinogens. Titanium cookware seems to pose the least health risks and doesn’t react with food while cooking. Part of a good cancer prevention plan is to ditch all others and buy high quality titanium cookware. Premium titanium cookware is more expensive but inferior cookware, being life threatening, will actually cost more over time. Buy only Titanium products which are having 316Ti Grade. They are available locally but not on stores and shops. There are over 20 manufactures of Titanium Ware in the world. Why Titanium ware is best: As I explained elsewhere in this article the metal made utensils expand while heating. Titanium does

47

not expand. So while heating the titanium in the pot does not allow the pot to expand and then an extra space is not created and the food does not stick in it. So you do not need oil /clarified butter for cooking. These utensils have, may be 5% titanium and rest is Stainless

steel. Plus cleaning has to be plain and simple. Do not use steel wool and other abrasives. Conclusion/ Bottom-line: One thing we should all avoid is cooking at higher temperatures. The higher the

Conversely, some antioxidants are activated by cooking. This includes lycopene in tomatoes and beta-carotene in carrots and sweet potatoes. Researchers found that you actually multiply the antioxidant power of your carrots three times by cooking them, and then pureeing them which releases cancerfighting compounds from the carrots. For healthy eating, Cast iron ware is a good choice but one has to use oil with such style of cooking which is not recommended by health experts as it increase the level of triglycerides. Find some quality titanium cookware and learn to cook foods below 200 degrees F to preserve the nutrients and receive the best value out of your food.

Great Habits of a Couple in a Strong and

Healthy Relationship

W

hat makes a healthy relationship? Does it differ from couple to couple? Forming a trusting and positive partnership involvesa lot of effort and time. And it doesn’t just happen overnight. For any relationship to grow well and stay strong, one needs to put in great amount of effort. Below are some habits that will help create and maintain a happy and healthy relationship:

Communication Communication is the key. It is one of the most important qualities a healthy relationship must have. However, not everyone knows how to communicate properly. But if you a good listener and learn along the lines of sincerity, then improvement works as a binding agent to cement the perfect relationship. Happy and mature couples develop good communication skills. They learn from each other, each day. They vocalize their love for one another by saying “I love you” often and offering compliments. They discuss the issues instead of sweeping them under the rug. They truly talk about their feelings. No matter how awkward or uncomfortable the experience feels, they admit their mistakes and try not to repeat it and register improvement on the horizon of time. This is a perfect recipe for a long-lasting and fulfilling relationship. Mutual Respect Every couple wants to maintain a joyful relationship. Simply this means respecting your partner’s time, space, profession, heart, character and trust. However, there are many things people do in relationships that can lower respect, like name-calling, talking negatively about the other to friends or family, and/or threatening to expunge the relationship. When respect is missing then the time is opportune to see a graceful exit in a relationship. Unfortunately, myriads of people continue to suffer from indecision and life becomes a quagmire. Quality Time Matters It doesn’t matter how much time you and your partner spend with each other. The most important part is about the quality of this time. It is always beneficial to spend time together to maintain a deep connection. They

If a couple talks like close friends, plays like kids, argues like husband and wife, and protect each other like a mother protects her child, that is a perfect relationship. Surinder Shaun Kochhar should meet enough so that they do not crave opportunities to be in each other’s presence, and miss each other in their absence. They should not expect their partner to mirror their needs. As the relationship becomes the center of individuals’ lives, it becomes increasingly important to seize chances to nourish it with quality time together. While giving each partner the space they need to be the best partner they can nourish in the relationship. Spending Time Apart Spending time together with your partner is indeed quintessential. Conversely, it is important to spend time apart. Being able to do your own things and remain independent is very vital. For example a partner can say, during each weekend 2.00 pm to 5.00 pm is my own time. Nobody will disturb me. I may spend these 3 hrs. of the day, the way I want. When couples spend too much time together, it can create an unhealthy co-dependence. Maintaining healthy boundaries and some autonomy will make for a long-lasting partnership.

Love Languages People have unique ways of feeling loved. There are words of affirmation, receiving gifts, spending quality time, acts of service, and physical touch. It’s important to know which love language work for the couple. Telling each other what makes you feel loved, respected and special helps both of you stay connected. Furthermore, make sure you are attending to your partner’s love language correctly and consistently.

in contrast to the negative. Nobody is perfect, and that includes our significant other. So instead of focusing on the bad, let’s make a conscious effort to look at the good side. Difference of Opinion There are arguments to be had in every relationship. It’s crucial to bring issues to the forefront, and work through the hard times together. Choose your encounters wisely, because people in happy and healthy relationships do. In German Armed Forces, a soldier cannot lodge a complaint against his fellow colleagues till 72 hours are over and the volume of complaints due to this hold has nosedived to below 15% approximately. It is always excellent to discuss the difficult issues at least after 72 hrs. as tempers are back in the barracks.

“2016 was a hatke year for me.” -

Arjun Kapoor

A

rjun Kapoor made a lot of difference in 2016 by choosing unique and different paths and making important decisions. He began it on a positive note with making his television debut as the host of Khatron Ke Khiladi. Then his film Ki & Ka with Kareena Kapoor Khan won audience’s attention and earned good money at the boxoffice. It was not an easy film to do but the actor made a brave choice and it became the first of its kind film. Talking about the past year with Filmfare, Arjun Kapoor says, “It was really good. Khatron Ke Khiladi was starting point for me. For me

it was a big decision to bring the change because I never believe playing by the rules. So I wanted to break the rules and change the rules in my own way. I thought this was a nice way of me being able to do something unique as a young actor and to connect with a lot of people. Thankfully, the result was very good. People were happy, the channel was happy. That was a great start of the year followed by of course, Ki & Ka which again was something different. And it worked.” He adds, “Before the release people thought it was such an off idea as Indians don’t necessarily accept a man sitting at home, running a home that kind of thought. I was happy that it got accepted. On his way forward, the young star says, “I have completed Half Girlfriend. It was a fantastic experience to shoot with Mohit Suri with

whom I always wanted to work. I have never done a panIndia passionate love story. It was exciting play a character from Bihar.” And finally this year Arjun got an opportunity to work with his chachu, Anil Kapoor. He says, “I always wanted to work with Anil chachu and to do it with a comedy film, which was again unexplored by me. I have never done a proper out and out family entertainer. We always end up doing films that are more multiplex films. I feel Anees Bazmi’s Mubarakan is one of those films that’s all India friendly again.” Arjun sums up his enthralling year in a short and sweet way. “So I think 2016 was a year of me doing genuinely making different decisions and seeing results. It was hatke year for me. It all worked out well for me this year,” smiles Arjun.
