Your Guide to Buying Super Visa Insurance in Canada 4Covers the person for health care, hospitalization and repatriation (returning to their home country) Because you have to get this policy in place before applying for the Super Visa there are refunds available in case you are denied the Super Visa status. This insurance policy should also be issued from a Canadian insurance company. This protects the government and the applicant by making the direct payment process easier. Depending on the circumstances, you could also obtain Super Visa insurance if you have a preexisting condition. It will depend on what that condition is and whether or not is has been stable for 3 to 6 months.

E

very year there are over 35 million visitors who travel to Canada to share in this country’s abundant opportunities and vibrant culture. This includes a wide range of students, businesspeople, temporary workers and tourists. As with all other countries around the globe, where you live and your reason for coming into Canada will determine the kind of entry requirements you’ll need. In some cases this will mean applying for a visitor’s visa. While there are many countries whose residents are exempt from these types of visas, if you plan on an extended stay then you’ll need to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa. As you might imagine, there is a backlog of applicants for this type of special visa. However, eligible parents or grandparents have the opportunity to “jump to the head of the line” by applying for a Super Visa. This new type of visa has been in existence for less than a year and is already proving to be an extremely popular option that is reuniting families all across Canada. What is a Super Visa? Current Canadian immigration policy allows for visitors to stay for only six months at a time. If a visitor wants to stay longer they’ll have to apply for an extension which also means paying an additional fee. However, if you are a parent or a grandparent who would like to visit family for an extend stay then you can apply for a Super Visa. The Super Visa allows you to stay up to two years without renewal. The application process for this group of temporary residents is a lot quicker. Typically it might take eight weeks to get a Super Visa as opposed to waiting several years for a Temporary Resident Visa. The goal is to get families together as fast as possible! The Super Visa allows for multiple visits throughout the duration of the visa. To be eligible for a Super Visa you’ll need to provide the following information: 4The person’s ties to the home country 4The purpose of the visit 4The person’s family and financial situation 4 A written commitment of financial support from the Canadian child or grandchild who meets a minimum income threshold 4Complete Immigration Medical Examination 4Proof of Canadian medical insurance Keep in mind, that even if you’re from a country that doesn’t require a visa (United States, France, Germany, and Italy to name a few) you can still apply for the Super Visa if you wish to stay longer than six months. What is Super Visa Insurance? As a health care debate continues to rage in American, Canadians enjoy the benefits of a first class health care system that provides full coverage for all of its citizens. Just because Canadians are covered doesn’t mean visitors will be able to take advantage of these same benefits. In fact, any visitor who needs any kind of medical care will have to pay for it out of their own pocket. The exception would be if that visitor had visa or traveler’s insurance. With the Super Visa application this type of insurance policy is a requirement. An applicant for a Super Visa must submit proof that they have medical insurance. That policy will need to be: 4Valid for at least one year from their date of entry into Canada 4Provide a minimum of $100,000 in coverage

Is Super Visa Insurance Worth It? It is a simple truth that at some point in our lives we’re going to need healthcare. The question of “when” and “how much will it cost” are the great unknowns. An immigrant coming into Canada is not required to purchase insurance; only those applying for a Super Visa need a policy. However, when you consider that an average day in a hospital could cost upwards of $3,000 (not to mention the additional charges to return to your home country) you can see that a medical emergency could quickly wipe out your savings if you aren’t covered by insurance. Why take the risk? Visa insurance policies are a low cost way of providing peace of mind to any Canadian visitor. Call SANDEEP AHUJA of PUNJAB INSURANCE AGENCY INC today to know more about Super Visa Insurance 604-996-6862.

etter at Home (Surrey-Whalley)’s group social initiative for isolated South Asian Women called Humjoli organized a New Year’s and Lohri celebration this

week. The event organized at Taj Park Banquet Hall was attended by over 100 women and guests of honor were MP Sukh Dhaliwal and MLA Sue Hammell. The women strung together an interesting line-up of items including a skit, group song, a qawaali and much more. A delicious lunch was served and a number of gift baskets courtesy of 411 Seniors Centre Society were also given as door prizes. “Humjoli” meaning friend or buddy is a group

social initiative of Better at Home SurreyWhalley hosted by PICS for Isolated South Asian Senior Women. “The social initiative of the Better at Home Program is a great way for isolated and lonely women to make friends and socialize. The group started with a handful of women, but I am pleased that Humjoli now has more than 100 members who regularly meet and support each other,” said Charan Gill, CEO, PICS. “As our lives are getting busier, our senior population, especially women find themselves increasingly secluded. The program is funded by government of BC, managed by United Way and delivered by local non-profit organizations, such as Progressive Intercultural Community

Services Society, which delivers the program in Surrey-Whalley and South Vancouver. While some services might be offered for free, most Better at Home services are provided on a fee-for-service basis. Services are offered on a sliding scale based on income level and vary depending on the unique needs of local seniors. If you are a South Asian senior woman and would like to be a part of this group, please call 604-596-7722 and speak to Sonia Chaudhry for more information. screen, the fps took a serious hit and

HP Star Wars Special Edition Notebook is built for the Star Wars fan in you

W

ith Star Wars being in vogue these days, HP has come out with a Special Edition Notebook to celebrate the release of the upcoming movie. The Star Wars Special Edition Notebook 15 (an003tx) is a treat for the eyes and must have for the Star Wars fan boys. When it comes to performance it executes decently for a mid-ranged gaming laptop, but lacks in the audio department. Here is what sets this laptop aside from its counterparts. Design: The Laptop is all about the design. The matt finish vinyl features Darth Vader on the top of the laptop panel and a red Galactic Empire logo. While on the inside, there is a storm trooper silhouetted by the Empire logo in red again. The touchpad is in the design of a targeting panel that is seen in a Tie-Fighter. That aside, the laptop has the USB and the LED light indicators running on the sides along with the HDMI, power, SD card slot, Ethernet port and DVD-ROM. Flip it around and you will find a detachable battery and a small exhaust vent in the corner. The laptop is not outright bulky and has rounded edges. We absolutely loved the well detailed layout that every star wars fan would love to own.

Specifications: Display: 15.6-inch diagonal FHD anti-glare display Resolution: 1920x1080 pixels Weight: 2.3Kg Dimensions: 26.1 x 38.4 x 2.5 cm Processor: 2.3GHz Intel Core i5 6200U RAM: 8GB DDR3L (Max 16) Hard Drive: 1TB Serial ATA Speaker: Bang and Olufsen Graphics: NVIDIA Ge Force 940M Graphics memory: 2GB Operating System: Windows 10 (Modified)

The backlit keyboards sports a red light that brings out its true Sithcolours. They keyboard is quite ergonomic and we didn’t feel tired after prolonged use. On the software part, the customized Windows with the Star Wars theme really sets it apart and worth the penny spent. From system sounds to the interface, nitbits have been modified to give the user a Star Wars-y feel. Performance: The most phenomenal aspect of the laptop is its display. It holds true to every word and produces crisp images, and can be viewed from any angle without any

distortion whatsoever. But, the underperformers turned out to be the speakers, which had little bass and the treble shook when playing the higher tones. Do not expect more from it in the sound department as the Star Wars movie series is about graphics and super sound. The battery lasted a good 2.5 hours while playing games that stretched out the capacity of the processor, graphics and the RAM. This is standard when it comes to gaming laptops and on regular light usage, namely watching a couple of movies and working on a bit of Photoshop or Microsoft Office, this easily lasts over

4 hours. The laptop scored 7,447 on 3D Mark Vantage and 2,531 on PC Mark 7, both of which indicate mediocre performance. We ran Witcher 3 on it to see how this trooper performs. We first ran it in ‘Ultra’ settings and though everything looked stunning on the full HD 1080p screen, the fps took a serious hit and the game started lagging. Geralt of Rivia (game character) did not look so fancy while taking pauses between each of his steps. So then we ran it on ‘High’ settings and things seemed fine, and even Geralt breathed a sigh of relief.

Ford Takes future’s self-driving cars for Snowy Test Drive

A

uto giant Ford would like the future’s self-driving cars to be more than fair-weather. The company is testing its autonomous vehicles on snow-covered roads. “It’s one thing for a car to drive itself in perfect weather,” Jim McBride, Ford’s technical leader for autonomous

vehicles, said in a statement by the car company. “It’s quite another to do so when the car’s sensors can’t see the road because it’s covered in snow.” Ford, in collaboration with the University of Michigan, is testing its cars under wintry elements at Mcity – a 32-acre (13 hectares) simulated urban environment located at the university.

AIRLIFT MOVIE REVIEW

Star cast of Airlift: Akshay Kumar, Nimrat Kaur, Inaamulhaq, Prakash Belawadi, Kumud Mishra, Purab Kohli, Feryna Wazheir Director : Raja Krishna Menon

It is August, 1990. Kuwait-based Indian businessman Ranjit Katyal (Akshay Kumar) is awoken rudely from slumber by the news that Iraqi forces have attacked the city. It is the sort of awakening that shakes loose Katyal from his cocooned wealthy life, which he shares with his wife Amrita (Nimrat Kaur) and young daughter, forcing him to deal with a series of dangerous situations, and leading to the evacuation of more than a lakh Indians stuck between Saddam Hussain’s brutal forces and an alarmingly slow-to-take-heed Indian state. The film is based on the real-life conflict and bloodshed that took place twenty five years back in Kuwait, and the way it is done—with a sense of urgency and immediacy, bringing alive a city over-run and under siege—sends out a crucial message to star-drivenyet-drivel-producing Bollywood. That given the backing of an A-list star, anything is possible: well done, Akshay Kumar, for donning the producer-withconviction hat to create a crackling film. Bollywood doesn’t do well with basing its films on real-life events because it mostly has no idea how

to straddle the line between fact and fiction, which is so crucial to the genre. It overdoes things, and turns them into melodrama and schmaltz. ‘Airlift’ plays it right, and gives us drama, even if things slow down and turn a trifle repetitious post interval. But overall, ‘Airlift’ is a good film, solidly plotted, well executed and well-acted. Just lose the songs, and the occasional underlined background music the next time, okay?

Fitoor: Lesser known facts the plot to form the perfect backdrop.”

07. Delhi schedule: Many scenes of Fitoor are picturised in the real locations of Delhi. Aditya Roy Kapur was excited to explore New Delhi from a different perspective. The actor, who has visited the Capital a couple of times before, shot there for the first time for Fitoor. Apparently, Aditya plays a Kashmiri lad and was spotted wearing the traditional pheran. Katrina is believed to be sporting a different look with red hair and royal attire. In one of the pictures that was leaked, the two stars share a kiss on the bridge by the Dal lake and this gives an idea of the chemistry their characters share, concluded the report. 1. Katrina Kaif looks stunning in the song ‘Pashmina’ from her upcoming film, ‘Fitoor.’ The actress, during a recent media interaction, said, “To shoot the song ‘Pashmina,’ both me and Aditya Roy Kapur had to give up on our Christmas and New Year’s holidays. We broke a few bones, had few injuries during the shoot of the song.” Kat further added that the shooting of the song included hours of dance rehearsals, lots of yelling, fighting and struggling. However, going by the trailer, we can say for sure that her hard work has paid off. 2. Sushant Singh Rajput, who made heads turn with his fabulous performance in Kai Po Che and Shuddh Desi Romance is miffed with Aditya Chopra, reports dnaindia.com. Sushant had let go of Abhishek Kapoor’s mega project - Fitoor opposite Katrina Kaif as the dates for the film clashed with Shekhar Kapur’s Paani. But the latest news is that YRF is not ready to produce the film now and Shekhar Kapur is looking for an international producer who can take the film under his wings, the report further states. And this does not stop here. Sushant was also offered Ram Leela before Ranveer Singh but due to YRF’s contract he could not sign the film. And last but not the least, Adi Chopra had promised Befikre to Sushant but roped in Ranveer without Sushant’s knowledge, the report adds. Well all this has left Sushant visibly upset with Adi Chopra. 3. Aditya Roy Kapoor rejected two big projects for Fitoor According to a report on Missmalini.com the Indian adaptation of Great Expectations–Fitoor, is taking a lot of time to film which is why Aditya Roy Kapoor hasn’t seen a film since Daawat-eIshq. Reportedly Fitoor is the sole reason behind this, it has gripped Aditya so much so that he has decided to dedicate himself solely to the vision of director Abhishekh Kapoor. The report further states that this is the reason why Aditya has rejected two big film projects, he just doesn’t want his concentration to waver from Fitoor. We’re sure the ‘great expectations’ stemming from the long wait for this Aditya Kapoor starrer will bear fruitful results. 4. Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan has taken the Bollywood by storm and Harshaali Malhotra, who played Shahida (Munni), the little girl from Pakistan who gets lost in India, is busy garnering

accolades for her performance. It is said that Harshaali has already started rejecting film offers. Reportedly, the cute girl was offered the role of young Katrina Kaif in the Fitoor, but her mom rejected it. Apparently, the team of Bajrangi Bhaijaan did not want to overexpose Harshaali. Also, Harshaali’s mom did not want her to do a five-minute cameo after a full-fledged role in Bajrangi Bhaijaan. The report further states that Salman also wanted Harshaali for a role in Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo but her mother refused the proposal. Buzz is that Harshaali’s mother does not want her to do small roles which wouldn’t help her career in any manner. While Harshaali’s mother is carefully planning her career, the makers of Fitoor were in trouble after Rekha opted out of the film. 5. The makers of Fitoor were in dilemma when Rekha opted out of the movie. However, Tabu stepped in immediately to fill in for Rekha and this came as a huge relief for the producers, who were left in a lurch after having shot for the entire film with Rekha. Tabu took only five hours to nod in agreement. The actress was so quick, that within flat five hours, she finalised her costumes, her look-test was done and she was ready to go in front of the camera. Reportedly, the actress had just finished shooting for her portion in the Ajay Devgn-starrer Drishyam when the makers of Fitoor approached her to take up the Begum’s role. Quoting a source, the report stated that Tabu considered the role carefully and only then agreed to do the part. 06 Kashmir schedule: Abhishek Kapoor had planned Fitoor as a story set in the picturesque valley of Kashmir. But floods played havoc with those plans and it was decided that the film will be shot in Mumbai. However, the film kicked off in Kashmir in November 2014, reported Mumbai Mirror. Gattu, as Abhishek is fondly called, put the film on floors with Aditya Roy Kapur, who replaced Sushant Singh as the protagonist. Gattu said, “Kashmir is an integral part of the film. We have kicked off the shoot with Aditya here. The first day happened to be his birthday and that makes it an auspicious start. Autumn is gorgeous hereand we are hoping to have a great first schedule.” Explaining his decision to shoot in Kashmir, Gattu said, “Kashmir has been my muse, it’s synonymous with love and symbolises the many facets of the ever-changing emotion. The breathtaking beauty of the Valley will help bring out the nuances in the story as it intertwines with

08 Katrina Kaif bangs a convertible car: While shooting for Fitoor in Delhi, there was a scene that required Katrina to drive a convertible. According to an Indian daily the camera was in front of her car and she sat in the car and started driving it without realising that the door was left open. And suddenly, there was a loud crash as obviously the car had smashed into a wall with the door open, the report stated. Talking to BT, Katrina had said that it was a very nice convertible, and it hit a wall. Aditya, being the method actor that he is, kept on acting in the shot, just in case Abhishek wanted to use it, she said. So, while Abhishek rushed to see if Kat was okay, true actor Adi was still acting, she concluded.

New year Resolutions

New Year’s resolutions are a bit like babies: They’re fun to make but extremely difficult to maintain. Contd from last issue

Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC

E

ach January, roughly one in three Americans resolve to better themselves in some way. A much smaller percentage of people actually make good on those resolutions. While about 75% of people stick to their goals for at least a week, less than half (46%) are still on target six months later. It’s hard to keep up the enthusiasm months after you’ve swept up the

3300 BCR Bhai Kanhayia British Columbia Army Cadet Corps Fundraiser in surrey

confetti, but it’s not impossible. This year, pick one of the following worthy resolutions, and stick with it. Here’s to your health. HERE ARE DR. BHURJI’S NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS, ADOPTING WHICH WOULD BE BENEFICIAL FOR YOUR MIND, BODY AND SOUL. 6) VOLUNTEER We tend to think our own bliss relies on bettering ourselves, but our happiness also increases when we help others, “ Sewa te Sukh upjeh “ And guess what? Happiness is good for your health. A 2010 Study found that people with positive emotions were about 20% less likely than their gloomier peers to have a heart attack or develop heart disease. Other research suggests that positive emotions can make people more resilient and resourceful. “Someone who makes this sort of resolution is likely to obtain a tremendous personal benefit in the happiness department,” 7) UP GRADE YOUR KNOWLEDGE No matter how old you are, heading back to the classroom can help revamp your career, introduce you to new friends, and even boost your brainpower. A 2007 study found that middle-age adults who had gone back to school (including night school) sometime in the previous quarter century had stronger memories and verbal skills than those who did not. What’s more, several studies have linked higher educational attainment to a decreased risk of Alzheimer’s disease. “You are gaining a sense of accomplishment by gaining new knowledge, and you are out there meeting people and creating possibilities that were never there before,”

8) STOP OR CUT BACK ON ALCOHOL While much has been written about the health benefits of a small amount of alcohol, too much tippling is still the bigger problem. Drinking Alcohol in excess affects the brain’s neurotransmitters and can increase the risk of depression, memory loss, or even seizures. Chronic heavy drinking boosts your risk of liver and heart disease, hypertension, stroke, and mental deterioration, and even cancers of the mouth, throat, liver, and breast. 9) GET MORE SLEEP You probably already know that a good night’s rest can do wonders for your mood—and appearance, But sleep is more beneficial to your health than you might realize. A lack of sleep has been linked to a greater risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes. And sleep is crucial for Strengthening Memories (a process called consolidation). So take a nap—and don’t feel guilty about it. 10) TRAVEL The joys and rewards of Vacation can last long after the suitcase is put away. “We can often get stuck in a rut, and we can’t get out of our own way But traveling allows us to tap into life as an adventure, and we can make changes in our lives without having to do anything too bold or dramatic. “It makes you feel rejuvenated and replenished”. “It gets you out of your typical scenery, and the effects are revitalizing. It’s another form of new discovery and learning, and great for the body and the soul.”

Star Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Farhan Akhtar, Aditi Rao Hydari, Manav Kaul, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Seema Pahwa Director: Bejoy Nambiar

W

azir from Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s stable and directed by Bejoy Nambiar is a dramatic thriller that is artistically crafted with a gripping screenplay and brilliant performances by its ace star cast. An original story by Chopra, it is intelligently and emotionally confronting. It is a revenge story where the strategies in the game of chess are cleverly used as an allegory and keep you riveted to the screen till the end. The screenplay co-written by Abhijat Joshi and Chopra is interestingly layered and unfurls the mystery at the opportune moment, making it an intensely intriguing film. It is a tale of the bonding between two disparate individuals, Pandit Omkarnath Dhar, an effervescent old man with a zest for life and chess, and Anti-Terrorism Squad Officer Danish Ali, in their common grief. Every character is well-etched and designed to interlock the plot effectively. Amitabh Bachchan as Pandit Omkarnath Dhar, once again in a new avatar, delivers a power-packed performance with a broad spectrum of emotions ranging from an inconsolable father who has lost his

daughter, to a happy-go-lucky chess player who introduces Danish Ali, to the game of chess with, “Hamara dushman hai waqt, saat baith kar shatranj khelenge to kat jayega”, meaning - our enemy is time, if we sit together and play chess, we will be able to kill time. Farhan Akhtar in an equally dynamic role as an ATS officer and forlorn father, renders a sincere and credible portrayal. His anguish and frustrations as the emotionally drained husband and

father, come across strongly on screen. Aditi Rao Hydari as Ruhana, Danish’s wife, merely contributes to the glamour quotient and fails to impress as an actor. Manav Kaul as the politician Yazaad Qureshi also known as Badshah, although in a fairly predictable role, is convincing and brilliant. In miniscule roles are Neil Nitin Mukesh, John Abraham and Seema Pahwa and the two child actors, one playing Danish

and Ruhana’s daughter Noorie, and the other Yazaad Qureshi’s daughter Ruhi. The two young girls, however, are wellcast and strike an emotional chord. In an otherwise serious themed film, the dialogues are perhaps intentionally ebullient and often arouse chuckles, with a view to making the tenor of the film light. The late-night scene, when Panditji introduces Danish to a unique chess session saying, “Vodka peene ke baad, Pandit, mahapandit ban jata hai” is one such instance. The songs are efficiently used to propel the narration, forward, especially, “Tere bin”, and “Yamaula”. And the background score punctuates the narration, aptly, making the entire viewing experience exalting. Cinematographer Sanu John Varghese captures the visuals perfectly, whether it is the action sequences or emotional turmoil. The frames are pure visual delight. What adds to the aesthetics of the frames, is the lighting, which is deliberate. It succeeds in creating the fitting effect, albeit dramatic. What keeps you immersed to this film, is the captivating story, tight plot and powerful performances. “Wazir” is a must-watch.

How to prevent Sugar Cravings Naturally According to estimates, an average Canadian consumes 72 kg of sugar every year. Ironically, in some cases, it exceeds the weight of an average individual.

By: Surinder Shaun Kochhar LPN, FCN

S

ugar addiction is another name for successive sugar cravings. An overindulgence in sweets and other sugary treats has been stamped as a sugar addiction. This good-for-bad- health sugar addiction daily result in many irreversible/chronic health complications in the long term, including obesity, heart disease, diabetes, gingivitis, tooth decay, certain types of cancer, kidney problems [nephropathy], eye problems [retinopathy] and nervous system break down [neuropathy] are common complications. More amputations are happening in the world due to diabetes than accidents. What a sad state of affairs? Needless to add that a high consumption of sugar, intermittently, do cause mood swings and make you feel fatigued, hyper, irritableanxious, or aggressive.. Some of the negative effects of sugar are linked to its effect on insulin, a hormone that helps sugar to be transferred from the blood into the body cells. There it is used as a fuel/energy along with oxygen for activities of daily living. One table spoon [15 gm] of sugar also known as sucrose has 58 calories. One tbl spoon [21gm] of Honey have 64 calories. Honey is as bad as table sugar in terms of calories for a diabetic person. Though onnutrition front honey is far better than table sugar. Most of the honey available on East Asian stores locally is adulterated. The best choice pure and available locally is Manuka Honey. An average East Indian consumes approx. 200gm of sugar a day per se all the intake . Those who do manual work can partly justify this but for the rest of us, we are inviting trouble by being a slave to our taste buds. An excess of sugar in the blood, hampersthe normal functioning of ten systems inside the body. Refined sugar [table sugar] is void of vitamins and minerals, so your body will have to borrow these nutrients from healthy cells in order to be able to metabolize the sugary food. This will cause your body to deplete its stores of vitamins (especially vitamin C and the B complex vitamins), minerals, and enzymes. Despite having insight onthe ill effects of sugar on health, we seem to surrender to our around 8000 taste buds [gustatory perception] in the mouth and add sugar to our foods. The sad part is, unknowingly, we indulge in highly processed store-bought foods that contain loads of added sugar. According to estimates, the average Canadian consumes 60kg -72 Kg of sugar every year.In some cases even more than the person’s weight as on date. The Nutriion Value Charts are fudged to promote sales. Daily we buy slow death. Eating too much sugar can also have an impact on our mood by making us tired, irritable,

Why is itso difficult to beat sugar craving ? The answer lies in our evolution: Our ancestors , during the primitive age, lived in an environment where quick sources of energy were hard to find , and thus they were always looking for foods which provide an abundance of readily available energy. Sugar is an excellent source of energy plus a sweet taste typically tickled their taste buds. Since all their calories were heavily manual they consumed more calories . But their food was least processed The problem these days is that we eat far more sugar than our ancestors ever could and least manual work in comparison . Also the type of sugar we tend to consume [refined cane sugar] makes us more vulnerable to health problems. Rather than indulging in healthy sweet treats like berries or low GI fruit we often opt for unhealthy snacks containing concentrated amounts of white table sugar. This highly refined sugar has little nutritional value; yet it is high in calories. It is GOOD FOR BAD HEALTH, a proven fact beyond

an iota of doubt. What happens inside our body after we eat sugar Inside our body at a cellular level, sugar and other sweet substances appearto stimulate the brain’s beta-endorphin receptor sites. Endorphins are produced by the central nervous system and the pituitary gland. It consists of two parts: endo- and -orphin; these are short forms of the words endogenous means [originating inside the body] and morphine, intended to mean “a morphine-like substance originating from within the body”.[1] The class of endorphin compounds includes α-endorphin, β-endorphin, γ-endorphin, α-neo-endorphin, and β-neo-endorphin. The principal function of endorphins is to inhibit the transmission of pain signals PLUS they also produce a feeling of euphoria /pleasure, very similar to that produced by other opioids. This is the reason why we compellingly fail to control our sugar cravings at par with drug addicts . Cont. in next issue

Aishwarya, the former beauty queen and one of the recipients of the prestigious civilian award by the French government, ‘Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters’, chose to wear this designer Banarasi silk sari for the special occasion. The sari has been woven by using traditional ‘kadhua’ technique of Banarasi handloom weaves. The kadhua style, in which a design is made in course of weaving, differs from embroidery. “In fact the kadhua

style of weaving, which cannot be imitated on power loom, is the basis of getting Geographical Indication (GI) tag to this famed Banarasi product,” said Rajni Kant of Human Welfare Association, who played a key role in getting GI certification for Banarasi Brocade and Sari. Varanasi’s weaving is famous for its exclusive varieties of the saris like Jangla, Tanchoi, Vaskat, Cutwork, Tishu, and Butidar. During the Moghal period, weaving of brocades with intricate designs using gold and silver threads was the speciality of Banaras.

Jake Kasdan signed to helm ‘Jumanji’ remake

D

irector Jake Kasdan, known for directing a few episodes of TV comedy show ‘New Girl’, has been tapped to helm the muchanticipated remake of 1995 Robin Williamsstarrer superhit ‘Jumanji’. The original movie adapted Chris Van Allsburg’s Caldecott Medalwinning adventure book and told the story of two kids who let loose a man trapped for decades in a board game. With this, they also unleash a jungle’s worth of creatures into the world. The upcoming film is being described as a new take on the book. Produced by Columbia Pictures, the remake is set for a December 25 release. Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner have written the script, working off of a draft by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Kasdan has shown a deft hand for sweet-natured comedy, directing episodes of TV’s ‘Freaks and Geeks’, besides ‘New Girl’, as well as the Cameron Diaz black comedy ‘Bad Teacher’ (2011). He also helmed the 2014 comedy ‘Sex Tape’.

5 firsts at the 67th Republic Day

parade in Delhi

The 67th Republic Day parade on New Delhi’s Rajpath on January 26 was a spectacular display of India’s military might and rich cultural diversity. The event, with French president Francois Hollande as guest of honour, also witnessed a few firsts. Here they are: 1. French army contingent became the first-ever foreign military group to march in the parade For the first time in the history of the Republic Day, foreign troops joined the celebrations as soldiers from France’s 35th Infantry Regiment, one of the country’s oldest active regiments, marched alongside their Indian counterparts. France’s participation was a reciprocal gesture after Indian troops marched down

Paris’s Champs-Elysees on Bastille Day in 2009. 2. Army dog squad returns after 26 years After 26 years, the Indian army’s unsung heroes returned to the parade. A dog squad drawn from the Army’s Remount Veterinary Corps -clad in maroon and gold striped coats -- marched along with dog handlers. The squad, comprising Labradors and German Shepherds, works in the restive northern region of Kashmir detecting explosives and landmines and tracking avalanches. Only 36 of 1,200 army dogs were chosen and underwent weeks of training in

preparation for the march. 3. Ex-servicemen tableau instead of a parade This was a break from tradition. Instead of a marching contingent of former servicemen, there was a tableau dedicated to the army veterans in the first part of the parade. 4. Motorised sliding glass roof for VVIPs It rained on the Republic Day parade last year, forcing the then guest, US President Barack Obama, to take shelter under a large

umbrella, in what was said to be an embarrassment for the organisers. This year, the VVIP enclosure had a motorised sliding glass roof in case there was rain. The roof was rolled back for the Air Force fly past for a clearer view of the spectacle. 5. Bravery award-winning children marched at the end of the parade In another break with tradition, the young recipients of the National Awards for Bravery marched only towards the end of the parade. In earlier Republic Day parades, the children rode on elephants, in what used to be one of the highlights of the parade.

Make-up guide to wearing any lip colour right Red Classic and always trending, red is best worn with jet black liquid eyeliner and liberal coats of mascara. However, try keeping the focus only on the lips. Keep your skin natural and dewy with sheer foundation. Ditch the blush and eyeliner and just swipe on a few coats of mascara. Pink Baby pink looks great on paler skin tones while deep pink is great if you have dusky skin. To avoid looking too girly, try monochromatic makeup. Use eye, lip and cheek colours in different shades and textures of pink. The trick works with almost every skin tone.

Purple The colour is so rich and vibrant, it’s best to have subdued make-up on the rest of the face. Sheer-coverage foundation and soft eye make-up will let blue take centre stage. A light dusting of coral blush will complement the deep lipstick hue. Gold Although unusual, shades of yellow gold can lend a high-fashion feel to your beauty look. Reach for a high-coverage foundation to create a flawless base. On the eyes, play up the energy of the lip colour by drawing a cat-eye and then tracing over the top of the black line with a white liner pencil to create a dual look.

Green Whether applied lightly for a sheer look or slicked on heavily for a dramatic effect a la Rihanna, green looks gorgeous. Since the shade tends to hide your natural lip colour, pair it with pink and red hues on the cheeks and eyes. This will bring back your natural flush to other areas of the face. Orange The colour complements a sunkissed glow. When going for an orange lip, apply bronzer wherever the sun would naturally hit your face — on the forehead, highest points of the cheekbones, point of the nose, chin, and shoulder — to warm up the skin. Sweep pink blush on the apples of your cheeks for a natural warmth and balance. Blue Blue has the ability to make your teeth appear whiter. Keep it simple when wearing blue lipstick by framing the eyes with a thin line of liquid eyeliner and using a sheer, tinted moisturiser. Black Take away its goth associations, and the colour black gets sophisticated. Keep the skin natural in coverage and finish. Pair the dark hue with a diffused smokey eye and surprise people who expect bold eyeliner.

You do not need any moisturiser if you use this face pack on a daily basis, as it makes you skin extremely supple.

Go natural for longer, voluminous tresses

I

f you have a healthy crop, your typical hair growth would be approximately half-an-inch per month. But if your hair is not growing as rapidly, a few lifestyle changes can go a long way in changing the way your hair grows. Read on to get that envious long mane.

Oil Massages Essential oils such as almond or cold-pressed coconut and olive oil stimulate the scalp. A few minutes of massage can increase circulation to the scalp, keeping the follicles healthy.

Herbs and Plants Sage, rosemary, gooseberry, aloe vera and henna are among those herbs and plants that are touted to be hair and scalp restorers. Another herb that works is saw palmetto — native to South-Eastern US — it should be used in a tablet form because it has been scientifically proven to block DHT, a metabolite of testosterone that is related to hair loss.

Check your hormones Low levels of oestrogen or high levels of testosterone (these are usually related to each other) can lead to thinner, weaker or even hair loss in women. The same could happen as a result of imbalanced thyroid levels. See your gynaecologist or GP for a blood test to see if your hormones are all in order.

Tips to add a dash of elegance to your jewellery

I

ts the season for bold, statement jewellery that can elevate your party dress into something positively festive. Here’s what you can do...

Bangles: Stacked bangles were a huge jewellery trend in 2015, and will remain in vogue this year too. Mixing a palette of colourful metals — from radiant rose gold to sleek sterling silver cuffs — creates a fresh statement style. Rings: Glamorous rings provide an elegant finishing touch to any ensemble. If you have a knack for elegance, then opt for a stud solitaire ring. Earrings: Fashionable and unconventional earrings in precious and semi-precious stones are pretty much what every woman desires. Boost the wow factor of any outfit with tassel earrings in gold or rose gold and get more mileage out of your standard ensembles. Show off some old-fashioned pair of gemstone danglers. Super sparkly chandelier earrings, pave encrusted danglers and drop earrings with pearl are a must for your jewellery collection this party season. Necklaces: A gemstone station necklace adds a chic pop of colour to your party look. Whether set with cool-toned stones such as topaz and moonstone, or rich hues like purple, station necklaces have an elegance that can be enjoyed for years to come.

WAYS TO KEEP YOUR CUT FRUITS FRESH FOR HOURS USING LEMON JUICE Lasts upto 6 hours Lemon juice inhibits the oxidation of the fruit which prevents browning as well as loss of crispness. One lemon can provide enough juice for a 1.5 quart bowl of cut fruit. One needs to just squeeze it on the fruits and brush the juice without bruising it. The best way for effective results would be to keep the fruits separate. Fruits like kiwis don’t require much of lemon juice as the fruits itself carries a lot of citrus acid. After adding lemon juice, the fruits should be stored in refrigerator. PLASTIC WRAPS Lasts upto 3-4 hours If you don’t like the first idea, considering

it may affect the original flavor, you can store your cut fruits in bowls with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Make sure you poke a few holes into it. Covering is necessary primarily to protect your fruit from picking up other odors within the fridge and the holes permit the fruit to breathe. However, this is not a fool-proof method. There is still a small chance of oxidation because of its exposure to outer air. POWDERED FORM OF CITRIC ACID Lasts upto 10-12 hours Other than lemon juice, you can also use the powdered form of citric-acid. It does not hamper the flavour of the fruits too much and makes them last for longer. USING COLD WATER Lasts upto 3-4 hours Putting the fruits in cold water with ice keeps the fruits fresh for a period of 3-4 hours.

Top 10 tips to increase stamina

S

tamina not only means having strength and energy to endure an activity for an extended period but also helps fight illness and stressful situations. Want to increase your stamina? Then, Try these stamina-boosting tips by Mike Jackson - Nutritional Consultant and Physique Transformation Specialist. 1: Get a physical test If you are intent on increasing your stamina, like your favourite athlete, you should start with a baseline medical test. This will help you to find out, how fit you are, in order to overcome injuries, fatigue and other problems. 2: Start with a balanced diet To build your stamina, don’t just rely on physical activity, you also need to watch what you eat. Include a well-balanced diet by adding low-fat products, plenty of fruits and vegetables and lean meat. 3: Play your favourite sport All types of outdoor sports are best to overcome fatigue and boost your stamina level; this is because it is a form of aerobic exercise. Sports like football, basketball and all other sprinting games will help strengthen your heart so that more oxygen reaches all parts of your body. 4: Start slowly If you have just begun your stamina boosting routine then, Mike advices you to take baby steps rather than push yourself into a hectic and rigorous programme. If you wish to run a desired distance in a required amount of time, then start with walking or by running, shorter distances until your body builds up enough stamina.

8 ‘Super foods’ every woman must eat

W

5: Take up cardiovascular exercise One of the best and simplest ways to build your stamina is by dedicating a certain time for cardiovascular exercise. Include cardiovascular exercises running, swimming etc. For best effects, increase the intensity of these exercises slowly. 6: Reduce your ‘rest’ days If you want stamina like Usain Bolt, you need to avoid resting between sets. But if you feel the strain, then rest for a few seconds. Mike says, “at the end of every exercise, you should feel the burn and should be breathing heavily and sweating.” 7: Eat several smaller meals To maintain the continuous supply of energy to your body, eat small meals at regular intervals. 8: Increase your water content Make sure you drink enough water to reduce dehydration and fatigue. If your body has less fluid, it will curdle your blood and thus slow down the blood flow and make your cells oxygen deficient. 9: Manage your sodium level If you do rigorous exercise throughout the day in hot climate, you tend to sweat more; as a result, your body loses a lot of salt during perspiration. 10: Choose carbohydrates Make sure you add carbohydrate rich foods to your diet, so that these foods provide your body with starches and sugars that your muscles can use as energy to boost endurance. Include carbohydrate rich foods like cereals, bread, fruits, vegetables, pasta and milk.

hile eating healthy is essential for both the sexes, men and women have different dietary requirements. Here are some foods that every woman must include in her diet:-

Cranberries Certain studies over the years have found a link between eating cranberries and how it reduces the risk of breast cancer and heart disease. Also, they have the ability to prevent and cure urinary tract infections.

Flax seeds Have flax seeds daily for overall good health. They are a good source of Omega-3 fatty acids and are known to reduce the risk of heart disease and breast cancer. They also have anti-inflammatory properties that prevent arthritis, apart from digestive properties which help ease irritable bowel syndrome.

Spinach While this might not be a muchloved food, spinach is packed with a host of vitamins, minerals and high amounts of magnesium. And magnesium is known to help reduce the physical symptoms of PMS like swelling, breast tenderness, bloating and weight gain.

Salmon Not only is salmon rich in iron, which is usually lacking in women, but it is also full of omega-3 fatty acids, which improves your mood.

Walnuts Experts say that walnuts have omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and phytosterols — all important in reducing the risk of breast cancer.

Oats Oats are bursting with healthboosting nutrients, great for female health. They keep your heart healthy, are great for digestion, keep blood pressure levels in check and also contain vitamin B6, which helps prevent PMS and mood swings. Milk Calcium deficiency is one of the major health concerns that affects women worldwide. Milk is an absolute must for women at any age. Tomatoes A carotenoid that is essential for good health is lycopene, which is a pigment found in tomatoes. And several studies have said that lycopene can help prevent breast cancer. Have you ever heard of the

Indian Amazon? T

emples, backwaters, endless paddy fields and golden beaches that stretch for miles. This is the imagery that a travel through India’s southern peninsula evokes. Imagine then, thick evergreen forests hidden behind the gently swaying palm trees. Sholas are high-altitude evergreen forests found along the Western Ghats in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The name is probably derived from the Tamil word ‘cholai’ meaning thicket or bamboo clump. Alternatively, it could have originated from the Prakrit golla which, in turn, is derived from the Sanskrit ‘gulma’ meaning a thicket. A distinct feature of shola forests is that while they grow thick in the valleys and folds of mountains, the mountains themselves are rolling hills of grass. Together, they form the shola-grassland mosaic landscape. One patch — the Kukkal shola — is easily accessible from Kodaikanal. It is the only little patch of shola left on the flanks of the Kukkal plateau, an hour long idyllic drive to the west of Kodaikanal and the Kukkal village in the Dindigul district in Tamil Nadu, from where it gets its name. Beyond the shola is the most extensive remaining grassland of the Palani hills, in which Kodaikanal sits, providing a glimpse into how these hills must once have appeared. The villagers will tell you that at one time before the Europeans arrived in these parts, the sholas extended from the peaks of the Palani hills (where Kodaikanal

Nalanda Tourist Attractions

N

alanda is mainly known for its university, though not in existence as of now. The Nalanda University was a flourishing center of higher learning. Other than the university which is in ruins, Nalanda has other tourist attractions that include Nalanda Museum, Buddhist Monasteries, and Nalanda Mahavihar. Here are a few places that are a must visit if you are planning a trip to Nalanda. Hieun Tsang Memorial Hall The memorial was built in the memory of Hieun-Tsang, the famous Chinese traveler and scholar. Hieun Tsang came to India in fifth century AD and studied at the famous university of Nalanda. The remnants of Nalanda University Nalanda University, once great center of higher learning, is now in ruins. The ruins of Nalanda University take you to the glorious past. The ruins of the university are spread in 14 hectares. Chinese traveler Hieun Tsang writes that the university had more than ten thousand students and more than one thousand faculty members. Nav Nalanda Vihar In the year 1951 Indian government decided to reestablish the past glory of Nalanda and in this effort it decided to institute a center of higher learning. The center aims to study Buddhism and its

essence in modern times. Near the place is another institute which aims to research the ancient language Pali, which is now out of tongue in India. Kundalpur Kundalpur is located at the distance of 1.6 kilometers from the remnants of the Nalanda University. The place is an important destination for Jains, particularly for the Digambar sect of the Jains. Digambar Jain followers believe that the 24th and the last Tirthankar, Lord Mahavira was born here. Surya Mandir Surya Mandir houses numerous statues of Hindu gods and goddesses. Located adjacent to ruins of the University of Nalanda, the temple has Buddha’s statues other than the statues Hindu deities. The Museum Any society which has a glorious history wants to save the same in various methods, and one of them is to preserve all those historical materials in a museum. The museum meant to preserve the golden past of Nalanda was instituted in the year 1971. The museum has a huge collection of ancient manuscripts and Buddhist statues. Archeologists found these manuscripts during excavation of the sites at Nalanda.

sits), almost touching the plains. Because the timber here held no commercial value, large tracts were cleared to monetise the land by planting eucalyptus, pine and wattle. While the conditions are right for these alien species to flourish, they don’t support life and walking through these silent plantations leaves you with the eerie feeling that you are on a ghost planet. The 10-minute walk from Mannavanur village, 35 km from Kodaikanal, could leave you a little out of breath. But, when you step foot into the Sholas you will be reminded of ever single shot of the Amazon forests you have caught in a Hollywood movies.
