s I met this 38 years young hunk with athletic build up for the first time in my life, I started experiencing positive vibrations as he looked professional to the core. After settling in his cozy cabin in a spic and span dealership office of OpenRoad Infiniti in Langley, the interface started. When requested, why he chose Automobile Industry as a career he replied.” I love driving and be with people all the time. Being a challenging career, it always fascinates me” When asked to comment on his 17 years career in Automobile and that too with almost one employer, I found him partly losing connection with me and he was revisiting his humble beginnings as a Sales Executive in the year 2000. Then he stated, “My beloved organization gave me the level playing ground and facilitated me to give my best.” When requested on his style of management he stated, “A Leader accept challenges. I focus on the things I can control. Always try to stay productive and effective by focusing on the things, I need to address in a stipulated time frame. I believe in Team work and respect everyone around me.” Mr. Khan went up the rung of his career slowly, surely and steadfastly by proving himself at every step. Being mentally strong, he balances his emotions with logic so that he can calculate each challenge/risk he faces. He is always will-

One cannot survive in a private organizationfor nearly two decades- without proven constancy to purpose and honesty of commitment. This Senior Executive with immaculate mental strength, hard work and responsibility, exhibited his greatest potential in succession. In Mr. Khan I visualized, mental strength is his biggest virtue. “ ing to step outside his comfort zone and grab opportunities that help him reach his career goals in succession. Change is the only constant factor in

life. He reminisces how the automobile Industry has really changed over the years. He further added,” Now the customer is more knowledgeable and savvy about what he wants and very well understands what his requirements are. That way our job is more challenging. This man loves challenges. When challenged he becomes more focussed. At OpenRoad Infiniti, Langley his strength is impeccable Customer Care and a loyal and satisfied clientage. He boosts of having the best automotive professionals in BC, with a customer centric showroom. As an ocular proof, this Auto Group has earned a reputation as a peoplefirst organization with consecutive Best Employer in Canada (2012-2016) and Best Managed Company (20122015) awards, as well as the prestigious CADA Innovator of the Year Laureate (2012) award. On hobbies front, apart from Wrestling, he loved playing cricket in his college days as well as in Canada. Now, since 2015, he is serving as a President of a local Cricket Club named, Pak-Can Cricket Club. Still a better chair awaits him. Only a matter of time that he gets another nod

A 14 years young boy came to Canada- the Land Of Opportunity- with dreams in his eyes, prayer on his lips and strength in his developing biceps in the year 1993. With age on his side and no second option, this lanky 6’-1 Virgonian made continued forays into the realm of hard work, being mentally prepared. When opportunity meets preparation, then success happens. His blotless and successive stint with Open Road Infiniti (HQ at Richmond) – spanning over 17 years- vouch for the traits in his personality.

He practices gratitude as an asset. I found in him a positive attitude. He takes everyday as a gift of Almighty (Allah) and try to control things which he can so as to dole out satisfied Customer service.

He is in full praise of his rev. father Mr. Mohammad Ashraf Khan who advised him that he can decide whatever career he wants to do. But do not be one of them. Be the best.

Successfully he has hitched the bandwagon of his life on the road of time with enduring success. For him success is never ending and failure is never final.

Seven Strategies for Highly Effective New Year’s Resolutions New Year’s Eve is just around the corner. It’s likely that at least one person will ask you what your resolutions are for the year ahead. Whether you like to make them or not, research has found that people who make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than people who don’t explicitly make resolutions. Yet as you know, it’s not so easy to keep your resolve as life returns to normal and your old habits of mind and action start testing your resolve and pulling you away from the new ones you resolved to create.

C

hange is difficult, yet as hard as it is, everyone has the ability to make and keep meaningful changes in their life, regardless of their age, or how well worn their habitual ways of engaging in the world. Indeed there’s a science to success when it comes to achieving goals and making life changes – whether on January 1st or any other time of year. On the link below are 7 strategies to help you make the changes you want in the year ahead – including making the right resolutions to begin with. I hope you will read it, but more so, I hope you will apply them so that 2013 will truly be the best year of your life. Not because everything will go as you want, but because you be firmly at the helm of your own life – living by design rather than by default.

tive New Year Resolutions. 1. Know Your Why. For a resolution to stick, it has to be aligned with your core values. We all want to look better or get richer, but your resolutions have to go beyond superficial desires and connect with what truly matters most to you. In other words, you have to “Know your why” and feel truly passionate about the goals you set for yourself. If you don’t, then when the going gets tough or your alarm goes off at 5:30am, you won’t have the resolve to stick to your plan. Connect your resolutions to those things that

give you a deeper sense of purpose and align with your core values. When your resolutions connect to a deeper sense of purpose, it compels you not to think small or play safe, but to dig deep and stay the course when the going gets tough – no matter how many hurdles. 2. Be Specific. Resolutions to ‘eat better, get fitter, be happier, relax more or have better life balance’ are doomed for failure because they lack specificity. The more specific you are, the more likely you will be able to succeed. Describe your goals and resolutions

in ways that allow you to track your progress and measure your success. For instance, if you want to build a better relationship with your partner, schedule at least one date night per month, or, as I’ve done with my husband, one weekend away - sans kids per year. Likewise if you’re committed to a better health and exercise regime, schedule how many workouts you’ll fit into each week. 3. Don’t Just Think It, Ink it! A Stanford University study found that when people wrote down their goal, it increased the probability of them

achieving it by over 70%. But don’t just write down the specific goal, write down how you will feel when you’ve accomplished it. When you have finished penning your desires, jot down on sticky pads the words that inspire you most about your goal and put them around your home/office to remind you of why you are committed to doing what it takes to bring your goal into reality. 4. Design Your Environment. Never underestimate the power of your environment to support or sabotage your success. Design your environment so that it’s hard NOT to do what you resolved. Create a progress chart, recruit a cheer squad among your family and friends, find someone to hold you accountable,

TRAVEL

hire a trainer, join a group, create a blog. Likewise, if there are people or things in your life that pull you down or off track, address them directly and set whatever boundaries you know you will need up front. 5. Narrow Your Efforts. Trying to do too many things at once can make you so unfocused that you just bounce around like Tigger on Red Bull, not quite sure which direction you are going. Set yourself up for success and start with JUST ONE MAJOR UNDERTAKING come January 1st. Then break that goal down into small bite size steps. Small steps, strong start! 6. Focus On The Process. It’s easy to get caught up in an initial wave of enthusiasm, only to come crashing down when your initial efforts don’t produce immediate and amazing results. So focus on the process itself, and develop greater competence of the actual activity, habit or skill you want to acquire. For instance, if you want to become more fit, focus on being able to jog a little bit further every time you go for a walk, rather than being able to run 5 miles within a week. PERSISTENCE ALWAYS PAYS OFF. 7. Forgive Your Failures. Your setbacks and failures will not define your success in the year ahead or any year. HOW YOU RESPOND WILL. If you happen to mess up, lose your resolve, press the snooze button or revert to a familiar well-practiced behavior, don’t beat up on yourself. Okay, so you didn’t get to the gym like you’d planned. How about 5 minutes of stretching? When it comes to slipping up and tripping up, you are in good company. It happens to everyone. Just don’t let your mishaps, setbacks and failures mean more than they do. Reflect on the lessons they hold, make adjustments accordingly, then tap your inner John Wayne and get back in the saddle. Life rewards those who work at it. Courtesy: FORBES

Will do television if it gives me good content:

Ileana D’Cruz A

ctor Ileana D’Cruz says she will work on the small screen provided the content is challenging and different. Asked if she would like to try the small screen, Ileana told IANS over the phone from Mumbai, “I’ve always been someone who has worked with good content and I like to do so, hence it doesn’t matter to me. If TV gives me good content, I’ll do it. If it’s challenging and pushing me to do something different then why not?” Asked if she feels TV helps in connecting with a wider audience, she said, “I’m really not sure about that but

I do know that sometimes watching a film in the theatre is a different experience and sometimes we just want to sit back and watch the movie…” What is she expecting out of the television premiere of the film? “I think it will be just as good, if not better because it’s a film which you can keep watching over and over again. I love the fact that it’s coming on TV, for everyone who has not watched it yet,” she added. Directed by Anees Bazmee, Mubarakan also stars Athiya Shetty, Arjun Kapoor and Anil Kapoor. After Baadshaho, Ileana is also will be once again

seen reprising her sizzling chemistry with Ajay Devgn in her upcoming film Raid. Helmed by Raj Kumar Gupta the film is set to hit the

Romancing Salman Khan and Aamir Khan onscreen is wonderful: Katrina Kaif

K

atrina Kaif is a self-proclaimed fan of romances, and says the genre becomes more exciting when she has co-stars like superstars Salman Khan and Aamir Khan, with whom she shares a great rapport both on and off the screen. Kat is currently awaiting the release of Tiger Zinda Hai, which brings her and Salman back together after five years and also gearing up for her

next film Thugs of Hindostan costarring Aamir. She was all praise when asked about her working chemistry with both the stars. Talking about reuniting with Salman in Tiger Zinda Hai, Katrina said, “So, it has been five years since ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ released. It’s an incredible story (of ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’). I think Ali (Abbas Zafar, the film’s director) has taken the story forward in an amazing way. It has

been really fun, every day on set with Ali and Salman. It has been really wonderful, the whole experience of filming it has been really nice.” Salman and Katrina were allegedly dating for a few years before breaking up in 2009. The two first worked together in Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya in 2005, which was also Katrina’s third Bollywood film. Kat said their equation has only evolved with time and today they hold each other in high regard. “Salman and I know each other for quite some years (laughs). Let’s put it like that. It has been a few years now and I think we share a really great equation and there’s a lot of respect between each other. So, I think that’s great,” she said. As for roamancig Aamir, with whom the actor did blockbuster film Dhoom 3, Katrina said, “I love romance as everyone does. Romancing people as wonderful as Aamir and Salman is wonderful.” Courtesy: Indian Express

Shahid Kapoor Confirms his Next With Imtiaz Ali

A

ctor Shahid Kapoor says that he is uniting again with his Jab We Met director Imtiaz Ali for a “very different film”. “We are doing something soon together and for that, I am really excited. I think Imtiaz is a phenomenally talented filmmaker,” said Shahid who will work with Imtiaz after almost 10 years. “We made a film together towards the beginning of my career and the absolute beginning of his career. It’s something which people still talk about. ‘Jab We Met’ has been a special film of my life and to work with the guy who gave me the role of Aditya Kashyap is going to be amazing.

16

JANUARY 2018

“The subject that he has is very different from what we have done in the past. It’s very exciting and interesting so right after Batti Gul Meter Chalu, I am going to do his film next,” added Shahid on the sidelines of Zee Cine Awards 2018. Batti Gul Meter Chalu is being directed by Shree Narayan Singh. Talking about the female lead for the film, Shahid said: “As of now, nothing has been finalised yet. We will let everyone know very soon who is the leading lady of the film, as we still have some time to start the film.” “We are going to start shooting of that film in February,” he added. The 38-year-old actor said her role in the Ryuhei Kitamura-helmed movie is powerful, reported Contactmusic. “I’m getting ready to film a movie called ‘The Doorman’, where I play an ex-marine who has to save her family. Jennifer Lawrence J

Was ‘Hit With Fear’ After Oscar Win ennifer Lawrence has revealed that winning a Best Actress Oscar and getting four nominations by the age of 27, has made her afraid of public turning against her. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 27-year-old actress admitted that the more successful she’s become, the more she’s worried people will get ‘’sick’’ of her and she won’t live up to their expectations. While speaking in an interview with Oprah Winfrey for the publication, Lawrence said, ‘With success comes fear. You’re immediately hit with fear. Or at least I was. I had been climbing and working and fighting, and I remember last year just getting hit with fear. All of a sudden it was, ‘They’re going to get sick of me’.’ The ‘mother!’ star added, ‘That’s when all my insecurity came. I’ve been probably more insecure after last year, and I don’t know if that’s just a feeling of: I’ve got more to lose, I have more people to disappoint. I don’t know how to explain it.’ Despite her fame and success, Jennifer considers her lifestyle to be ‘pretty normal’ because she drives

to her appointments herself and she doesn’t have the wild social life people would assume. ‘It’s really not hard. People imagine my life being [different]. It’s actually pretty normal. I drove myself to the laser hair removal today. I have always been a homebody. My social life has always been very boring: I sit around outside my house with my friends and drink wine, and that hasn’t really changed. I don’t really like to go out,’ noted Lawrence. Angelina Jolie

A

ngelina Jolie says she is a proud American but the actor feels a sense of responsibility towards people from different parts of the world. The 42-year-old actor, who was honoured with a humanitarian award from the UN Correspondents Association Awards, said as a “citizen of the world” she empathises people who are struggling for their rights, W magazine reported.”… Like everyone here, I love my own country. I am proud to be American. Feel sense responsibility. But I also feel a sense of responsibility towards all other people all around the world fighting for the freedoms that we are very lucky to have secured years ago. “And for me, this is what it means to be a citizen of the world: seeing yourself in the struggles of others,” Jolie said in her acceptance speech. The actor, a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees special envoy, said considering oneself a global citizen does not make one any less patriotic. Feel sense responsibility “It is being suggested by some people today that to consider yourself a global citizen is to care less for your country, to be insufficiently patriotic. “We’ve been led to believe that international institutions and treaties, commitments on human rights built over generations, are a straitjacket upon the interests of

Patience – a great virtue, towards

Scintillating Success… Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM (A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp.)

T

he word patience comes from the Latin word pati which means to suffer. So, patience means suffering- a minor form of despair often referred as a virtue. Those who have the quality of being willing to bear adversities, calm endurance of misfortune, suffering etc. are bestowed with being patient. Such type of people has to control their emotions or impulses and proceed in a cool, calm composed, collected and confident manner when faced with difficulties. They tolerate delay, waiting or frustration due to failure without becoming agitated or upset to the core.

Benefits of Developing Patience:

Helps in reducing stress levels: As we progress in age, we learn and practice patience, so as to control anger, stress or overwhelming in a better manner. Slowly and surely, we are more in control of our emotions and in a better position to deal with difficult situations with ease and poise. This promotes success in succession and makes us a happier, healthier person. Promote better decision-making: When you are patient you take the time to assess the situation, see the big picture, and weigh any pros and cons. The chances of making a big mistake lessen because you avoid making it in haste. Taking the time to solve a problem requires patience and meaningful deliberations. Patience brings empathy and compassion: You are automatically more patient and compassionate with others when you are patient. Patience helps to determine the processes to overcome obstacles so they are solved in time one after another. Definitely, this results in better, more fulfilling relationships with our seniors, juniors, peers, partners, friends and children. Have a patience day once a week: Let one day in a week be your patience

Patience comes with maturity. Maturity comes with positive attitude not age alone. I have seen aged people resorting to unmerited firing as they cannot hold the AK47 of their conscious thoughts from unmerited firing and destroy the mutual peace.

No matter however bad your situation is, just lose your temper and make it worse.

Anger test our patience. Count ten in reverse order before you speak. Take deep breaths and exhale with pursed lips and you will control your temper as the wave of getting berserk will be over. day, where you make patience your goal for the entire day. Make a concerted effort to take your time and hold your nerve by not losing temper. At the end of the day, review all the ways in which you’ve made smarter moves; that is got along better with others and exhibited patience through out the day. Then learn to do it on a daily basis. It will not be out of place to mention that patience is much like a daily physical exercise because it requires persistence, consistent effort. Hold your nerve: In case you are always in a tearing hurry and have the tendency to rush around and try to hurry things up or always want things done immediately and can’t wait for things to take their normal and natural course, then the wise act is to stop and review/evaluate the happenings and environment around you. Take several deep breaths before you act or make a move. For example, if you’re in a long line up at the grocery store or in heavy traffic, make the decision to pause and not get mixed up. Do listen to the radio, music of your choice, read a book or just enjoy the view. Getting impatient won’t make things better, so no need to get worked up for nothing. Rethink before you speak: At times we blurt out the first anger laden thought that comes into our heads without considering the consequences. The wise thing is to show patience, take a pause and go over what we want to say. Reverse counting one to ten and chances are, we

Difficult circumstances test our patience. While passing through these, Weak people revenge. Strong people forgive and Wise people ignore.” can avoid hurting or offending others save our inner peace. Teach our children to be patient: To teach our children, we have to lead our kids by example not by lectures. It is easy for children to pick it up as a habit when they are growing up. Patience and discipline comes hand in hand: Patience could be a habit taught at a younger age. It is damn easy to give any color of your choice to a white piece of cloth: and you know black does not take any other hue. If a child is brought up impatient, it means more difficult for such a child when grown up to dovetail with patience. Genetics and patience: Like father, like son. Some experts say, patience is an inherited trait that gradually shows up as we get older. But, as the years go by I have seen for myself to have more of it. But do remember that half of our characteristics are learned from the environment we are raised in. This means you can successfully change anything about yourself. It’s not all hereditary. Can patience be learned: Daily we learn it the hard way from repercussions resulting from our impatience. And we can also learn it proactively through meditation and patience building habits like checking facts, going through a checklist before a decision, reminding yourself to think beyond the immediate scenario. Patience is very difficult at times: This is the sole reason why it is repeatedly said that” patience is a virtue”. Unfortunately, we the people, go over the hill during our inter -communications and lack a lot of it. Patience is doing something about the situation and wait for the result of what you did to fix it. We need patience in everything. Whether in losing weight, quitting smoking, raising children et al. Keep in mind, that patience will work successfully if you give it the time it needs. Time is a big factor in being patient, so develop ways to be patient when dealing with waiting or delay. Just get your mind occupied with things that you like to do and

Patience does not come easily to nearly all of us and it’s probably harder now to be patient than historically it has ever been; courtesy, changed scenario. It takes years to be successful in exhibiting patience. makes you happy. Patience is a good thing and good things happen to those who keep on improving. Those who are patient have a better chance get the best of what they deserve.

Anything worthwhile and of importance, in our lives, does not take place right away. It takes time, dedication and consistent, persistent effort to achieve in this vying age of competition.; though patience is definitely a great virtue.” If you try to learn to be patient, the world like you. Be patient, and that patience will not be wasted . It will be rewarded. It is the key to success. It is the Smart thing to practice.

Better Patience Better Success.

To reach our goals, to have successful relationships and achieve personal inner peace, the answer is to have and practice patience.

Super cool nail art ideas for short nails

S

porting a perfect manicure with immaculate nails and an eye catching design can never go out of style. Celebrities swear by this. So, no matter how stunning your outfit is, nail art can make or break your look. Although they’re a small part of our body, nails have the ability to add that extra oomph to your persona. And no, you don’t need to have insane extensions or super complex designs to get the perfect set of nails. It’s about time people realize that beautiful nail art can be achieved on short nails as well! The idea that only people with long nails can get nail art is plain stupid.

Yes, longer nails provide more surface area to the nail technicians to express their creativity and the same becomes difficult on short nails. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible! Adapting to a fastpacedmodern lifestyle means we’re always short on time. Lesser time means less maintenance and less maintenance means short nails. Let’s face it, who has the time to make regular trips to the nail salon in case of any emergency. Shortnails are easy to maintain, more practical when it comes to following your daily routine and as versatile as long nails. Examine your nails Before you head out to the nail spa, have a good look at your nails. Please don’t take badly bitten nails, destroyed cuticles or jagged nails to the salon. Before you plan anything, make sure you get a good manicure from the salon itself or a DIY can work too. Although, if you’re not a pro at filing or cutting your nails, then it’s best to rely on professionals. Next, give your nails a symmetric shape, by filing them a little. It’s also a good idea to get your cuticles pushed back, this helps in increasing surface creating more surface area especially on small nails. There are many designs to choose from. You’re bound to go crazy and won’t be able to pick any one! Manicure with a twist French tip Give your classic manicure a twist by adding a layer of clear glitter nail paint as a topcoat or at the tip. A French manicure looks super classy no matter how short or long the nails are. By adding a layer of glitter polish you would be adding a fresh spin to the classic.

Striped like candy Super cute and super easy. Candy stripes are hard to mess up. You can team up colors like pale pink, powder blue, lilac, teal or a soft plum with white. The combinations are endless, you go for the one matching your vibe. Embrace the season Match your nails to the season. Try a season specific design, like pineapples and lemons for summer or pretty reddish brown leaves for autumn or maybe a bright floral pattern for spring. Keep the base coat white and outline the shapes in black to really bring out the design. The new French manicure Add yet another twist to the classic manicure by switching the tips. Instead of painting each tip a boring white, you could paint them in different shades to quirk up the classic you could even choose two different tip shades and apply them at a diagonal angle instead of stick straight. Lastly, remember to keep the base a neutral color to really bring out your nails. Courtsey: TNN

Kal Dosanjh, Founder and CEO, is a veteran officer with over 18 years of experience. He also served on the Firearms Interdiction Team, Drug Squad, as an Undercover Operator, Acting Sergeant on the riot squad and has also assisted on large scale investigations in various capacities. The types of calls included homicides,

robberies, serious assaults, in addition to dealing with violent drug dealers, gang members and individuals suffering from mental health issues. On account of the various types of dangerous calls he responded too, and his community work, he received several commendations. Arjan Singh Bhullar, Co-founder, is a Canadian Olympic wrestler. Bhullar wrestled for wrestling powerhouse Simon Fraser University on a scholarship, while pursuing a degree in Political Science. Simon Fraser allowed Arjan to compete in the Canadian University league (CIS) as well as an American University league (NAIA). He is the first Indian to be signed by UFC. Kiran Toor, Founder and Vice President, is a fourth-year student pursuing her Education degree at Simon Fraser University. Kids Play Foundation is currently addressing the issues through sport and other gang and violence prevention programming. As an organization, Kids Play has demonstrated the continued ability to deliver its various youth sports events and anti-gang prevention programs in a professional and organized fashion. While organized sport can help youth develop skills to abstain from gangs, drugs, and violent activities, it is not a stand-alone solution. To prevent illegal and violent behavior, Kids Play Foundation has developed a network of partners that provide wraparound services. These wraparound services ensure that youths’ basic needs are met. Further more, involvement with Kids Play provides opportunities for interactions with positive role models and responsible adults. Addressing needs and a youth’s network are protective factors against illicit behavior. Photo Credit: Aziz Ladha

A Girl in a Whirl Contd. from previous issue (Part 18) “Pandit ji, what could have been the problem in my going abroad?”, I asked the pandit cutting him short. “There could have been many problems such as an incorrect inquiry report could be sent to the embassy, your documents could have been missing on the way or you don’t get them on time. Somebody may not be able to reach embassy on time. The visa officer may not be in good mood. There may be a mistake or wrong information in the papers. Some document may be lost when required…”, Suddenly the face of the crying girl outside the embassy flashed before my eyes. I didn’t ask the pandit anything else. He made a new charm and asked me to put it under the pillow of my husband. He said that it would help him quit drinking and maintain peace at home. Finally the day came when I was to leave for Canada. Sam was busy with his business so he couldn’t come to India to take me. I had to travel alone to Canada alone. I had never done so before by a plane. I was scared a bit. Sam told that everybody is afraid of traveling by a plane first time. But, everything turns out normal automatically. Sam said that they would be waiting for me at the Vancouver airport. My mom and I packed my luggage. Dad, mom, Meenu and Sunny came to see me off at the Amritsar Airport.

Before leaving for Canada, I wept bitterly putting my head on the shoulder of every family member. “Remember all what I told you last night, Sonia!”, dad reminded me of his talk. “Don’t worry at all. Read holy prayer on the way. I have put a small holy book in your purse. Also, take care of all your documents and passport.”, mom said to me. Meenu also wept bitterly hugging me. I said good-bye to all after hugging my bro, Sunny. I was boarding Air-India flight. I had a stay in London for four hours. Then I had to change the plane that would take me to Toronto directly. I had to change the plane again from there to Vancouver. There was an elderly couple sitting beside me in the plane. They were also to go to Vancouver. They had been living in Surrey for the past thirty years. I told them about my in-laws. But they didn’t know them. “Dear, Surrey is just like a mini Punjab. More than a hundred thousand people live there. Punjabis can be seen in every nook and corner now.”, they said. They talked a lot more about surrey. My flight reached Vancouver at 10 A.M. All passengers got up when the plane stopped at the concourse. All started taking out their handbags from over-head closets. All the passengers came out of the plane one-by-one. I also kept walking with other passengers. I stood in an entry clearance line along with other passengers. I was unable to understand their English

pronunciation, and whatever I knew I felt like forgetting all of it. I was feeling very edgy as if they were not going to allow me to enter Canada. I was repeatedly chanting waheguru mantra in my mind. Infact, when a person is alone and in trouble, nothing but god comes to his mind. I hadn’t read the holy book even once on my way. My turn came. I handed over my passport and landing documents to the officer. He was taking time more than I had expected to clear my entry. My nervousness was rising. I started chanting Waheguru in my mind even faster. After about fifteen minutes, the officer stamped my papers several times like a machine and handed me all of them. He asked me to go to another officer. Thanking him, I went in that direction. The second officer took half an hour to prepare my landing papers. He also gave me a separate bunch of papers and asked me to read them sometime. I asked him how to get out of the airport. He asked me to go to carousel number six and collect my luggage first. Then he directed me towards the exit door. Thanking him I went to the carousel number six and began waiting there for my luggage. In a few minutes, my both bags came one-by-one. I picked them up and came out. There were many people standing outside. My whole body was shivering with a strange fear. Contd. in next issue

Why losing weight as we age is brutally hard: Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun)

I

LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM (A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp.)

t is not myth that as we get older, the weight loss achievement, becomes difficult. Women struggle hard to shed the weight after pregnancy. The present data supports that it is harder to lose weight at 40 years than at the age of 20 years, in the light of the fact that body wants to hang onto it. Why can’t we lose weight?: Our Metabolism has a direct link with our weight. Let us understand first the metabolism of the human body. Metabolism is your body’s ability to create energy (power) out of the food we eat daily. This is accomplished by the energy mechanism in our cells, called mitochondria. The key to a healthy weight is therefore healthy mitochondria. Energy is key. Energy is a life force. Mitochondria make energy for us. How do mitochondria affect weight loss: In a healthy body, where your metabolism functions like a welloiled machine, your body takes the food you eat and does two things: 4Uses a portion immediately for energy* production and 4Briefly stores the excess as fat to be accessed as a source of energy between meals. *Our cells need oxygen and this energy (fuel) to function properly 24x7. With less fuel the organs will fail slowly. But what happens in people who have unhealthy mitochondria?: The food cannot be converted to energy; therefore, it gets successively stored as fat. Insulin resistance (in Diabetics) plays a role here. The process creates a vicious cycle. Your cells struggle for energy and send a signal to brain that they need energy. So wrongfully your brain tells you to eat more, and everything you eat gets immediately converted to fat, with no chance to give you energy/ fuel. In the midst of this mess your Physician advises you to exercise. How are you supposed to exercise when you have no energy?! It’s actually much worse than that. Unhealthy mitochondria, while they are trying to make energy for you,

38

JANUARY 2018

Plan to eat every three to four hours during the day and don’t skip breakfast. When we’re very hungry, we tend to eat more than we usually need, resulting in additional calories and resultant weight gain. Eat your breakfast like a Prince, Lunch like a King and Supper like a Pauper.

On food front, primary there are two types of people: Eat to live and live to eat. Put on your thinking cap, close your eyelids and search for an honest answer, where you stand. Knowingly or unknowingly, daily we buy slow death, as out of 600000 productsin toto- we buy, 77% are processed, sugar laded and trans fat loaded (to increase the shelf life of a product). Those who continue to eat products made with Milk, Processed and Repackaged, unmindfullywith sedentary life style to the core, are in for trouble on health front. Needless to add that they are in a tearing hurry to get the picture finally framed at an early date. actually release free radicals that cause inflammation. Then your cells, in the absence of well-functioning mitochondria, try to make energy on their own, through a process called Gamma Oxidation. This causes more inflammation for the cells and can limits their ability to function properly. Why Mitochondria malfunctioning happens: Mitochondrial malfunctioning happens due to diseases that are caused by abnormal genes that lead to flawed proteins or other molecules in the mitochondria. The various

subtypes are caused by alterations in different genes, leading to worn-down cells in different parts of the body. Hardest hit are organs and tissues that need a lot of energy, like muscles, brain, heart, kidneys and liver. When the energy supply slumps, cells can become damaged or destroyed. Even in healthy people, researchers have found, mitochondria can gradually deteriorate as we grow older. Malfunctioning mitochondria have been linked to Diabetes, Heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and even normal aging. So now we understand that Mitochondrion that lives in every cell, becomes less efficient, as we get older. It does not process carbohydrates and fat in food very well and lead to fat accumulation. Fat increase is the weight gain in us as our body is 60% water. Right combinations of food and exercise is the only remedy. And daily many people fail on this front as we surrender to our taste buds and sedentary life style. Muscle loss in your 40s plays a role too: Up to 30’s our metabolism is more active. Meaning there by Muscle is more metabolically active than fat tissue. Our muscle mass start to gradually decline beginning in our 20s. There is a decline in Resting metabolic rate (RMR). RMR is the energy or calories required to perform vital body functions, such as respiration and heart rate while the body is in a resting mode. As we add years, our RMR continue to go down naturally. Resultantly, though we eat the exact same number of calories and do the same amount of exercise in our 40s that we did in our 30s, we actually would

gain weight since we have more calories than we actually need since our RMR use less calories to manage vital functions. Studies show that our RMR declines about 2 percent every ten years. Lifestyle definitely plays a role: From mid thirties onwards, people are financially stable and due to ever busy schedules they are left with little time for work out. And more so, both partners working, with demanding careers to cap it all, healthy eating slowly slide backwards and go back to the back burner. I regularly see even many Physicians eating fast food daily, at a lunch time, courtesy pharma companies. We can eat once a week this good- for- bad health fast food on our cheating day, otherwise health is compromised on the carousel of time. Many opt for Crash diets: Unfortunately, crash diets also lower the metabolic rate. During this rigmarole body ends up burning muscle for daily energy. When people stop dieting, they gain the weight back in fat since the body then start storing up for the next time you go on a diet and when the body thinks it is starving.

Fill up the plane of your life with the fuel of healthy food, to travel safe in the diseased air of uncertainty so as to land at the aerodrome of longevity where life threatening diseases are non- existent.

give you healthy mitochondria. Drinking water could be the key to lose weight: Check on the bottom of the bottle there is a triangle sign and there will be a number on it. Generally, safe, reusable plastic containers should have a #2, #4 or #5. Other numbers are not safe as per experts as those are recycled plastic. When we deposit used and empty water/soft drink bottles, they are finally sent for recycling. This plastic does not melt. To do so a chemical named BPA is added into it which helps it in melting. This chemical remains in the recycled plastic bottles other than 2, 4 and 5. This chemical seep into the fluids – for example water- and can cause cancer and affect our metabolism adversely.

Drink, clean and lukewarm tap water and coconut water. Home made orange juice with fiber in it- by using Nutri Bullet type juicer- without any addition of salt or sugar is good. Use less or no alcohol, which is high in calories but low in nutrition. Ramp up the intake of vegetables and Low Glycemic fruit and cut back on refined carbohydrates and processed foods. The brain mechanism backfires. Gender Difference: Men have a distinct advantage over women when it comes to shedding extra pounds. Biologically men have greater capacity to lose weight because of the metabolic system. Men inherently have a greater amount of skeletal muscle mass. Skeletal muscle mass burns six calories whenever it needs a repair, and fat cells use about two calories. Muscle cells need a lot more energy, and you will grab energy from fat cells and burn your fat cells to get that energy over to the muscle cells. Weight loss experts always confirm that men always tend to lose weight faster than women. Gender differences also exist due to medical conditions that cause weight gain. Hypothyroidism-one of its key symptoms is weight gain- for instance, is five to eight times more common in women than in men. Women also have the added challenge of losing weight gained during pregnancy, and hormonal changes associated with perimenopause can also make it harder to lose weight. Needless to add that men also experience And ropause and resultant hormonal changes after 50 years, colloquially we call it middle age bulge. For men, habits play a vital role: Usually we find that a change in the men’s lifestyle from being physically active to being more sedentary slowly increases their weight. Let us take the example of a soldier. They are in fine fettle, when in service; and after retirement, over the years, many start flaunting a beer belly. More so many senior Army Officers- while in service- greet us with middle age bulge as hard exercise is out of their daily regimen. Moral of the story is: you are what you eat and exercise there of. I have seen sports men who are used to having a few beers and red meat after playing the game of their choice keep their weight under control. But when suddenly get injured or are unable to participate for other reasons and when they continue having a few beers and eating high calorie foods out of habit, then you can see how the pounds creep up fairly easily on them.”’ What can men and women in their 40s do to successfully shed pounds and keep them off? For starters, exercise is the lesson

www.SAENTERTAINMENT.CA

number one: Cardiovascular and resistance are two types of exercise. Consult with your Physician, though experts, recommend in any weight management program to try to work on 30 percent of a resistance activity where you’re actually ripping muscles. For example, by lifting weights (a resistance activity-, you are actually causing tiny tears (known as “microtears”) in the muscle fibers, which the body then repairs and adapts the muscles to better handle the stimulus that caused this damage. This is the process by which muscles grow. In medical language it is called hypertrophy. But these exercises must be done in the presence of a Physical Trainer for new entrants. The remaining 70 percent would be cardio, which helps to maintain weight over the longer period. When you can’t do cardio—say due to injury in the lower extremities—you can do sitting exercises that engage muscles, so you can continue to be active. Mild Pilates or mild yoga can help a little but ripping of the muscle will give desired results. You are what you eat: Be mindful of what you put in your mouth. Monitor everything you eat on weekdays as well as weekend days. We tend to eat differently when we are off work. Plan to eat every three to four hours during the day and don’t skip breakfast. If you do, then it may affect your metabolism. When we’re very hungry, we tend to eat more than we usually need, resulting in additional calories and resultant weight gain. Aim for at least 30 minutes of activity 5 times a week, plus that aforementioned resistance weight training, and avoid sitting as much as

Let one day in a week be your cheating day. On this day you can eat whatever you like. But allow discipline on your food intake on weekdays to maintain a balance. Do not set yourself up for failure.

@ansalmedia

Do not use over-the-counter “weight loss” pills: “they’re all deceptive. There’s no scientific evidence that they work to fully fix the issue possible. Any activity that you do that prevents you from sitting allows your body to burn calories. Avoid sitting for longer hours. Eat healthy fats: Mitochondria prefer to use medium-chain triglycerides as fuel. These are found in coconut oil. Other healthy fats include avocados, extravirgin olive oil, nuts, seeds, and wild fatty fish. (Sock eyed wild pacific Salmon, Mackerel (Atlantic), Sardines, Red Herring] to quote a few. Eat colorful foods: The darker colored the better. These foods, like berries and dark green vegetables are rich in polyphenols, which have anti-oxidants that help mitochondria stay healthy. Avoid sugar and processed foods. These foods cause inflammation, and inflammation damages mitochondria and other damages beyond repair. As per leading Endocrinologists maximum limit for sugar per day (24 hours) is 25 gm. Protect your gut microbiome, the beneficial bacteria that live in your intestines. A healthy balance of good bacteria prevents accumulation of bad bacteria that release lipo polysaccharides, compounds which cause inflammation and damage mitochondria. A good probiotic will help, as will eating naturally-fermented foods. Homemade yogurt is very good. Greek Yogurt with no added sugars is also very good. Have high-quality sleep. Conclusion Finally, if you are carrying what you (forget about others) perceive as a small amount of extra weight (calculate your BMI) and have no associated medical problems, then it is ok to live with it. Since it’s not a medical issue but a cosmetic issue, maybe acceptance of certain things is a remedial measure. Nothing else need to be done. What’s necessary is to feel at ease. Many people use the holidays as an excuse to indulge in an extra drink or two…or more. But, you’d be surprised at just how many calories are packed into your favourite seasonal cocktails. Add in mixers, syrups and sodas, and you’ll be battling the holiday bulge along with a bad hangover. Increase in weight happens due to medical conditions also. For example, Hypothyroid, Doctor prescribed medicine’s adverse effect, drugs taken at will over the counter. Towards remedial measures, we should rely on home made food, Thai food – which is primarily Indian food- as it was taken away by various monks when they went to Thailand. Shun away western junk food, prepare your own pizza at home. Drink Hot water -one liter -first thing in the morning without brushing your teeth as the saliva made overnight in the mouth should go down the stomach; and being anti inflammatory help clean the stomach. Japanese live longest on this earth. Follow Japanese and Chinese style of living and dining wherever warranted. In 5 blue zones areas in this world people live for over 100 years at present. Humza Valley- in the Karakorum Mountains of Northern Pakistan-. people live over 100 years. What is common in all these areas is that they do not eat processed or repackaged food at all and have a very active life style. Their daily food input matches daily output and they score 100 not out on age parameter. There is no need to despair. There is hope. I believe the key to a healthy weight is having healthy mitochondria. For this we need to do our home work sincerely and eat sensibly. In this case the Doctor and the Patient is the same person i.e. you, You and YOU. If you will not take care of your health, then who will, my dear friend?

Four basic skincare tips to follow in winters

W

ith the season change, you must change your skincare routine. The winter chill can take a toll on your skin and make it extremely dry or sensitive during the cold weather. Just like your layers of sweaters, your skin needs extra care during winters too. Read through and follow these four simple steps. 1. Cleansing Over washing your face during winters can cause dryness. However, cleansing your face is recommended in winters too. You can limit the washes to 2-3 times a day. Also, look for hydrating face washes. 2. Exfoliation Just like cleansing, you can limit exfoliation during winters by once a week. You can look for natural home-made packs instead of harsh exfoliators. 3. Sun Shield Your skin needs protection from the sun in the winters too. Make sure you apply a sunscreen before you head out. Apply the sunscreen 15 minutes before, for it to get effective. 4. Moisturizer Lastly, don’t forget to moisturise your skin. The winter chill can be harsh on your skin and make your skin extremely day. And that’s why applying a cream is a must during this weather change Courtsey: TNN

conditioner should be light so that it doesn’t weigh down the hair in humid weather conditions.

Whether you are scheduling a quick pollu-cation or heading for that longawaited annual holiday, you know that packing right needs top priority. Along with packing your bags, pay heed to your travel beauty kit too, else you can say bon voyage to looking your best. Here’s a little primer on what you should stow before you go... If it’s a beach holiday

Keep a hydrating mist (for face and hair) handy because too much of sun and the moisture-heavy climate of the area can make your skin sore and tresses frizzy; keep spritzing on your face and hair every two hours. If it’s a hilly vacay Make sure you carry a face and body cream rich in ‘ceramides’ because cold winds make the skin very

dry and even patchy. You also require a sunscreen with more SPF than usual because of the harsh hillside sun rays. And a creamy hair conditioner to keep your strands soft. If it’s a desert region Pack a ‘silicone-based sunscreen’ to help you deal with sweat that can make your skin look greasy. For hair, a gentle shampoo will do, and the hair

What else? A skin serum application at night is great for all climatic zones because it heals and repairs any damage (via sun, humidity, cold wind) that your skin may have suffered during sightseeing. Keep a dry shampoo in your travel kit to use it as a quick-fix on days you are too busy or pressed for time to wash your hair 4Ideal Travel KIT 4Face cleanser & toner 4Skin serum 4Sunscreen 4Shampoo and conditioner 4BB cream 4Razor Courtsey: TNN

Trump’s biggest fans? Canadian universities

C

anadian universities are seeing a surge in applications from overseas students, with the country’s liberal, migrant-friendly image appearing to be an important attraction. Students who might once have headed for the United States now seem to be reconsidering and seeing Canada as a North American alternative. The University of Toronto, one of Canada’s top-ranked universities, has seen interest rising sharply, including a 57% increase in applications from India. This interest has converted into acceptances, says the university - with an overall 20% increase in overseas students accepting places for the autumn. Wilfrid Laurier University says it has had a 32% increase in overseas students and McMaster University has seen an annual rise of 33%. This is a valuable market, with overseas students bringing in tuition fees and local spending power. A study last week suggested that overseas students were worth $36bn (£28bn) per year to the US economy.

“The US political climate might indeed be one reason why more students are choosing to come to Montreal and Canada generally.” The idea of an “open and welcoming city” has a strong appeal to students coming to Montreal, she says. “They can have a North American study experience here, in a safe environment.”

Best student city This year saw Montreal getting top place in the QS Best Student Cities rankings, replacing Paris which had been in first place for the four previous years. Among the measures were Montreal’s access to employers, safety, pollution, desirability for student life and sense of tolerance. Another advantage for this part of

Canada is that it can offer courses in both English and French. There is also a rising stream of US students heading to Canada. Apart from any political considerations, those heading over the border will also be attracted by tuition fees, which can be cheaper for US students than studying at home, even at overseas student rates. But the US university system remains a powerful magnet for overseas students, with numbers rising to more than a million students last year, with almost 330,000 from China alone. This annual increase, up by about 7% in 2016, was valued as being worth another £3bn to the US economy. By Sean Coughlan Education correspondent

Tolerant image But Canadian universities are seizing an opportunity from the Trump administration in the US and the Brexit vote in the UK to present themselves as a more outwardlooking alternative. There are more than 350,000 overseas students already in Canada, with research from the Canadian Bureau for International Education suggesting that the image of a “tolerant and non-discriminatory society” is a major attraction. Perception is a powerful force in this market and Canadian universities are contrasting their warmer welcome to international students with the tough messages on immigration being transmitted by the Trump administration. The University of Montreal has set up its own travel fund for its international students who would once have attended conferences in the US, but now face difficulties getting into the country. An Iranian student who says he spent two hours being “interrogated” at a US airport was among those who would be funded to go to conferences elsewhere. International cities Professor Ted Sargent, responsible for the University of Toronto’s international outreach, says the response of overseas students to such changes in the US has been to “go back to first principles”. “Events in the US and the UK have reverberated around the world,” he says. “It makes people go back and think again.” Canada can offer top-ranked universities, he says, but the country is also sending a “message about being open to the world”. Prof Sargent says that half of the population of Toronto is non-Canadian born and that Canada’s strategy has been to “attract the brightest and the best” from around the world. A spokeswoman for the University of Montreal says: “Of course, it is also difficult to ignore what is going on south of our border.

Simple ways in which you can

reduce stress W

e lead a fast-paced life these days. And stress has become an integral part of it. From the daily commute to work, and the constant FOMO, there are a lot of things that add to stress and it is fast emerging as one of the major reasons affecting the health of people around the world. The American Medical Association has even identified stress as the cause of more than 60 per cent of all human illness. High levels of stress can lead to heart disease, intestinal problems, diabetes and even cancer. Here are a few ways in which you can cut down stress in daily life. Meditation The ancient practice of meditation has stood the test of time. Indian yogis and sages have been meditating for centuries. Mediation is, in fact, a way of life which teaches you to focus on the present moment and cut out all the thoughts that crowd our heads. Yoga says that to achieve the true states of meditation, you need to go through several stages like physical position, breath control, relaxation and the advanced stages of concentration, contemplation and absorption. Mediation helps you relax, and focus on the moment, while ridding your mind of the stream of thoughts that cause stress. Deep breaths

56

JANUARY 2018

While meditation involves slow and relaxed breathing, deep breathing involves contraction of the diaphragm. When you take deep breaths, air enters the lungs and your chest rises and the belly expands. Deep breathing, says The American Institute of Stress, is the body’s natural relaxation response. This technique helps combat stress by reducing the heart rate and lowering blood pressure. Taking deep breaths activates the hypothalamus, to send out neurohormones that keep stressproducing hormones at bay and triggers a relaxation technique in the body. It allows the lungs to take in more oxygen, slowing down the heartbeat and lowering the blood pressure, making you feel relaxed. Stretching When you are stressed, the blood flow in the body is restricted. As a result, there will be knots in the muscles in the shoulders and neck. Your joints and back will hurt, and the body will become stiffer. When you stretch, it simulates the receptors in the nervous system that bring down the production of stress

hormones. According to the Mayo Clinic, stretching increases the blood flow to the muscles. This, in turn, improves blood circulation. So the muscles become relaxed, and heart health and cardiovascular functions vastly improve. Stretching also increases the circulation of new blood to the brain, improving your mood. Music Music is a great way to calm down and improve your mood. It is a recognised form of therapy. The National Center for Biotechnology Information, conducted a psychosocial stress test on 60 healthy female volunteers in 2013. They were randomly assigned to one of three different conditions prior to the stress test—relaxing music, the sound of rippling water and rest without acoustic stimulation. The findings indicated that listening to music impacted the psychobiological stress system, and those who listened to relaxing music recovered from stress faster compared to

the other groups. Laugh Laughter is the best medicine when it comes to reducing stress. A 2008 study by researchers at the American Physiological Society, investigating the interaction between the brain, behaviour and the immune system found that simply anticipating laughter boosted health protecting hormones and significantly brings down the levels of stress hormones. A hearty laugh will lighten your mood, increase your intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulate the heart, lungs and muscles and boost the endorphin levels released by the brain. It stimulates circulation and relaxes the muscles, reducing the physical symptoms of stress. Courtesy: FEMINA

Farhan Akhtar: Influence Of Women In Any Field Is Good

A

c to r-f i l m m a ke r- s i n ge r Farhan Akhtar hopes that actresses backing films as producers is not just a passing trend as he believes that women’s influence, irrespective of the field, is good for everyone. Over the years, actresses like Dia Mirza, Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma, Chitrangda Singh and Richa Chadha have shown interest in contributing to filmmaking as producers. Asked what he thought about the trend, Akhtar told IANS here: “That’s how it should be. Not just actresses, there are also a lot of female producers and women who are working in different companies and handling the creative aspect of those companies.” “It is amazing to see that. The more influence that we have of women in any field, why just films... it can be sports or politics also, it’s good for everyone because they have a different perspective on things because they have experienced life in different ways from what we (men) have; so, it makes a difference,” added the brother of director Zoya Akhtar. The first look of his next coproduction “3 Storeys”, starring Pulkit Samrat, Sharman Joshi, Richa Chadha and Renuka Shahane, was

unveiled last month. So, is a multistarrer the formula for a hit film? “I don’t think so. Eventually, a good story should be the formula for success... whether it is about one person in a room or 21 people in a colony like in ‘3 Storeys’. Our emphasis is on trying to tell good stories. “Arjun Mukerjee, who is the director and writer of this film, has truly put together something that we consider very special. Now we are excited to share it with others,” he said. Farhan is also passionate about fitness, among other things. The actor, who has fronted ads of vitamins and dietary supplements brand, is now endorsing Apollo Munich Health Insurance. Is he deliberately focussing on healthrelated brands? “It is not deliberate. I do feel good about doing it when it does happen. I don’t go around looking for it, but I guess the lifestyle that I lead, the kind of work that I do, information on my life and focus on health and fitness, encourage people to come and speak to me about it,” said the 43-year-old.

ctor Bhumi Pednekar, who has played characters such as a overweight woman in Dum Laga Ke Haisha and a vivacious girl in Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, feels lucky for the roles that have come her way. “You feel happy when your films do well commercially but I feel extremely lucky about the kind of roles I have got. Yes, it is great to be part of a film that has done well but it is even better to have something substantial to do in a film,” Bhumi, told IANS. The actor hopes to get such roles in the future. “I really hope to continue getting such roles. I am really happy the way life is going on,” she added. Bhumi Pednekar has not only kickstarted her career with back to back hits but has also encouraged her mother Sumitra Pednekar to take up films, Bhumi’s mother will make her debut as a producer with a low budget youth centric film The Journey of Bhangover. Talking about the film, Sumitra had earlier said, “I came into

films because of my daughter, Bhumi Pednekar. She is doing so well and she urged me to start doing something as she said, ‘Mom, why don’t you start doing something. You are sitting at home and killing your talent’.” Bhumi is gearing up for her fourth film Chambal, which revolves around the Chambal dacoits. The film is directed by Udta Punjab famed Abhishek Chaubey and also stars Sushant Singh Rajput. ourtesy: IANS

Lohri RELATIONSHIP Celebration

EDUCATION

TRAVEL

This Punjabi festival has more to it than just rewri and groundnuts going into the bonfire.

What is Lohri? Why is it celebrated? T

o begin with, it’s a festival that doesn’t play guessing games with us--like our beloved Diwali or Holi, where one complicated calendar or the other decides which day the festival “falls on”. By default, Lohri--a Punjabi festival--is celebrated on January 13 each year. Though popular belief has it that Lohri is celebrated to mark the end of peak winter, this festival is traditionally associated with the harvest of the rabi crops. The traditional time to harvest sugarcane crops is January, therefore, Lohri is seen by some to be a harvest festival. And thus, Punjabi farmers see the day after Lohri (Maghi) as the financial New Year. Rewri and groundnuts, anyone? As anyone who has ever celebrated the festival in full fervour around the bonfire would tell you--gur rewri, peanuts and popcorns are the three edibles associated with this festival. Besides these, in Punjab’s villages, it is a tradition to eat gajjak, sarson da saag and makki di roti on the day of Lohri. It is also traditional to eat ‘til rice’--sweet rice made with jaggery (gur) and sesame seeds.

The logic behind consuming these food items is--the general time to sow sugarcane is January to March, and the harvesting period is between December and March. The other important food item of Lohri is radish, which can be harvested between October and January. Punjabi folklore If you haven’t heard Punjabi women go around the fire singing “Sunder mundriye ho!”, you

clearly haven’t had the chance to visit Punjab around Lohri. The folklore--Sunder Mundriye--is actually the tale of a man called Dulla Bhatti, who is said to have lived in Punjab during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar. Being quite the ‘Robin Hood’ back in the day, Dulla Bhatti used to supposedly steal from the rich, and rescue poor Punjabi girls

being taken forcibly to be sold in slave markets. He then went on to arrange their marriages to boys of the village, and provided them with dowries (from the stolen money). Amongst these girls were Sundri and Mundri, who have now come to be associated with Punjab’s folklore, Sunder Mundriye. ourtesy: indiatoday

Securing Peace of Mind during Holidays-

Travel Insurance

Sandeep Ahuja

H

oliday season is in full swing, and to spend quality time away from our busy life schedule, we are making arrangements for travel- alone or with our family. While our aim is to have peace of mind during our vacations, it can be achieved fully if we have enough protection during times of any unforeseen medical emergency. While we feel protected due to the coverage provided by our provincial health coverage, we need to realize that it guarantees medical treatment coverage only ‘within the province’ and if we move out of the province, the maximum amount of coverage provided by the provincial health plan is minimal; and any expenditure incurred above this amount has to be paid by the traveler. To protect you and your loved ones totally from all medical expenses, insurance companies offer many useful plans as per your needs and financial reach. There are a number of options that you can choose from: You can buy individual travel insurance or travel insurance for your family. Certainly, Family Plans are a ‘more economical option’ and are available for both Single Trip and Multi Trip Annual plans. This coverage proves to be immensely useful during your trip; especially in US, where the medical expenses can be exceedingly high. The insurance companies provide coverage from 5 million to 10 million dollars. These plans are available only for those people who have medical services plan coverage from their home province. Some real instances of claims that have been approved and paid by insurance companies have been given below:
