How to start a

zero waste

lifestyle

Z

ero waste lifestyle is another trendy internet term that is gaining more and more popularity, but it is definitely for the better. You might have heard of it, or even known about it for a while, but the task of switching to a new lifestyle that requires several extra steps of mindfulness can be rather daunting. With that in mind, here is your guide to starting a zero waste lifestyle that will make it much easier for you to transition, and even if you don’t make the complete move it will significantly help reduce your carbon footprint. 1. Invest in reusables for the kitchen Start with a water bottle, and then get yourself a collection of mason jars, food grade boxes, steel containers, reusable

6

JANUARY 2020

towels and napkins, metals straws, and everything else. Do not make the mistake of throwing away everything in your kitchen to start with, that will create so much waste when you can simply avoid it. Instead prolong the life of items you would otherwise trash mindlessly, and make sure every purchase you make now onwards is oriented towards your zero waste goal. While you are at it, stock up on some reusable bags as well! 2. Grow your own when you can Buying anything from the grocery store means you will have to deal with packaging which is definitely going to end up in the trash. By growing your own veggies and herbs in the backyard or garden you can bring down all carbon emissions related to the produce you use. If you cannot grow your own, consider going to a farmer’s market on a weekly basis to get the supplies you need. You can also find cheese, milk, homemade cleaners, and other useful items there which come in little to no packaging which can also be recycled. 3.Start to recycle and compost As you start the journey, you will realise it is unrealistic not have any excess that you cannot use. The challenge is not to completely free your house of anything

that cannot be used, but rather recycle or compost whatever you cannot use. Dedicate a can to compostable waste and another to recyclable waste. Invest some time segregating through your waste efficiently and you will end up with waste that doesn’t end up in landfills after one use! 4.Practice the principles of self control Get into the habit of not buying anything that tickles your fancy. Everytime you are about to make a purchase take a small moment to consider the impact your purchase will have on the environment and whether or not you will produce waste upon this purchase. 5.Reduce what you use and get support from others too! By reducing the amount of things you use and rationing your supplies you will only use what you need, which in turn will relatively produce less waste. Start reading and researching about the newfound interest and interact with others who are looking to do the same to get support, encouragement, and inspiration! While it is impossible to entirely create no waste whatsoever, being careful of the amount you produce and then recycling, reusing, and composting to make up will definitely all add up to help achieve your goals of a sustainable existence.

Life with Invisalign:

What you need to know about caring for your aligners and lunch so you can maximize your time. Eating and drinking with Invisalign There are no food restrictions with Invisalign since you will take the aligners out to eat. However, when you first begin treatment and when you put in a new set of aligners, your teeth can be a little bit sensitive. So, similar to what I tell our braces patients, if your teeth are sore, stick with softer foods and cold drinks, including smoothies, soup, mashed potatoes, pasta, yogurt, oatmeal, soft cheeses and things along those lines. The discomfort usually goes away in a day or so and some patients find that it’s not even bad enough to warrant changing their diet. If you do, just consider it an excellent opportunity to splurge on a milkshake.

A

s the premier Invisalign provider in the Fraser Valley, my team and I have perfected thousands of smiles with the system of clear aligners. While the fact that the treatment is virtually invisible is, of course, a huge perk, another important benefit our Surrey, Abbotsford and Langley Invisalign patients love is the convenience. The aligners are removable and there are no brackets and wires getting in the way. However, as stressfree and low maintenance as Invisalign is there are still steps you’ll want to take to keep your smile healthy and your aligners clean. Read on for myInvisalign care tips that will help you make the most out of your treatment. How does Invisalign work? First, let’s have a quick refresher on the basics of Invisalign. Invisalign involves a series of clear, BPA-free plastic, removable aligners. Before you kick off treatment, an Aura Orthodontics team member takes a digital scan of your teeth and gums with our iTero® scanner. A computerized, 3D model of your mouth is created based on the scans. Dr. Everett Lin,Dr. Julia Koo or I plan out your treatment directly on

www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

As for drinking with Invisalign, you will need to take your aligners out before drinking anything aside from plain water. Hot beverages, such as coffee, can warp your aligners, which will affect the fit and, ultimately, can impact your results. Additionally, because the aligners fit snug against your teeth, beverages can get trapped between your aligners and your teeth. If they are sugary or dark in color (think coffee, tea or wine), this can increase your odds of tooth decay or staining. To be continued in the next issue

Dr Vishal Sharma BSc, DDS, Cert. Ortho. FRCD(C), FCDS(BC)

the model, moving each individual tooth into place. Invisalign prints out your aligners based on their specifications. Each set of aligners is programmed to achieve certain movements and as you make your way through the trays, your new smile gradually takes shape. When treatment is complete, you’ll wear a retainer to ensure your teeth stay in their new positions. Wearing Invisalign While it can vary depending on your treatment plan, most patients change to a new set of aligners every week. For the best results, I recommend wearing Invisalign aligners for about 20 to 22 hours per day. You will only take your aligners out to brush and floss your teeth and for meals and snacks. You might find you snack less or have to be efficient with certain meals in an effort to wear your aligners for the full amount of time. This is not to say you can’t enjoy leisurely dinners out with friends anymore. A good Invisalign tip is to adjust your day accordingly. If you know you are dining out at night, for example, eat something quick and easy for breakfast JANUARY 2020

ctress Kriti Sanon, who is currently busy shooting for “Mimi”, expresses excitement about the film.

The film has an unusual story by Bollywood standards. It casts Kriti as a young surrogate mother.

“I am very excited. It’s based on the subject of surrogacy but actually it’s the story of this young girl who wants to be an actor. She’s a dancer in Mandawa and she ends up being a surrogate for couple. Then, the things that follow change her life and also change her as a person,” Kriti told in an interview. At the same time, there are a lot of characters you will take back home.” The film is directed by “Luka Chuppi” fame Laxman Utekar. “We’ve shot 40 per cent of the film. 5 ways to be a better earth

Advocate in 2020 I

n rolls the new year, and we have so many resolutions. Some of them are for our own health, some for the ones we love, and some should be for the planet we live in that sustains us. The human race has been ungrateful to the Earth for a very long time; we have done irrevocable damage and now we have no choice but to aggressively advocate for better treatment of the motherland that births and nourishes all of us.

The resolution you truly need and cannot do without this year is to be a better Earth advocate in 2020, and if you are looking for meaningful inspiration then look no further. Here is how you can be a better global citizen and advocate for planet Earth in 2020. 1. Start with little things, and celebrate them It is impossible to redo everything all at once. All of our habits and our lifestyle need redoing, and this is a slow process which entails several milestones. To succeed and arrive at the end of the journey, it is crucial to celebrate the first compost pit you make, the first time you create no waste in a day, when you officially switch to reusable containers, and

everything else! Every step has a huge impact, so you must celebrate it! 2. Always stay positive

As you set out on any challenge, you should expect some resistance from your old habits. This shouldn’t put you down, but rather remind you why you started in the first place. There will be days when you will accidentally leave a faucet running or forget to turn the lights off. Forgive yourself for the mistakes you make on the way, and remember to be positive and believe in your ability to do better next time. 3. Set an example for those around you It is much easier to learn by example, and one person has to do it for everyone else. Keep a coffee mug at your desk to inspire your coworkers to ditch the paper cups, and start recycling things around the house to encourage your siblings too. Set an example and see

how others follow your lead to save the Earth! 4. Understand the battles others fight

It is important to be understanding and compassionate through the transformation of becoming a better Earth advocate as everyone does not have the same resources or capacity to

make the changes you are making. Be respectful of others’ wishes, dietary needs and preferences, as well as their pocket. 5. Look forward to making changes, one at a time Trying to do too many things is often the downfall of incredibly motivated people. It is not possible to make all changes at once, one has to start small and gradually scale to involve other things and do better everyday. Start out with replacing tissue papers and paper towels with reusable fabric napkins around the house, and gradually make your way to a zero waste lifestyle. Follow these simple but motivational tips to stay on track and stick to your resolution. Be a better Earth advocate in 2020, and see how it impacts your life in multiple ways.

e’s curated a ‘satvik’ meal for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, hosted four seasons of MasterChef India and an 18-episode “Pickled Nation” TV series. Now, celebrity Chef Kunal Kapur has turned his attention to green coffee that he says “has a neutral flavor, giving it the added advantage of being versatile”.

“I have prepared cookies using green coffee powder and they are fantastic. Because the taste of green coffee is unlike roasted coffee, it can easily blend into different foods. Another way to use green coffee is by adding it in cupcakes, cold brews and even milk and cereals. How did he get involved with this initiative and what has been his role so far in promoting green coffee? Kapur first got introduced to green coffee when he was out of the country travelling, and his initial research was not encouraging -- it was a beverage that was not highly spoken about.

Kunal Kapur turns attention to green coffee

“While there was a certain amount of education involved, not many focused on its flavor and taste. This is a unique beverage that is mild in taste (unlike your regular roasted coffee) with a distinctive aroma. While there is availability of the product, there is also a certain understanding that is needed in terms of its preparation, the experience of drinking it and most importantly, the health benefits it offers. Therefore I hope to encourage people in starting to include this in their daily routine by just making a healthier choice with a healthier coffee,” Kapur explained. How does one extract green coffee?

Coffee beans are actually green seeds with a bright red berry inside. When it is roasted, it turns the seeds brown, giving it a certain aroma along with the flavor of coffee.

For the green coffee bean extract, the seeds are left unroasted and when soaked, it creates a concentrated extract which is known as “green coffee”.

In other words, green coffee is coffee beans in their natural form. There are various forms to consume green coffee. One of the easiest ways to have it is through coffee powder which is soluble in water and easy to prepare, Kapur elaborated. What are the benefits of green coffee? Green coffee is lower in caffeine and is not only packed with health benefits, but is also great to taste, Kapur said, adding that since it is made with only unroasted beans, it doesn’t taste like traditional roasted coffee. “It has a neutral flavor, giving it the added advantage of being versatile. Green coffee beans have up to 3X antioxidant power than regular

coffee, making it a naturally healthy alternative. A natural antioxidant called Chlorogenic acid that is present in green coffee not only protects your health, but also keeps your skin healthy. Moreover, it aids in weight management and helps regulate metabolism, amongst various other benefits,” Kapur said. What is its future?

“I feel green coffee is just a start towards the growing demand in the health segment. There is a huge push needed to make people aware about the availability of healthy alternatives. There are innumerable choices present in categories ranging from breakfast to snacking as well as main meals. Green coffee, oats, coconut, vegetarian protein, moringa etc. are some very unique offerings now available,” Kapur concluded. By: Vihsnu Makhijani

active, hyper dog may create a bit of chaos if the rest of your pets are not as active upon the same level. There are always exceptions to all the generalized information we are providing towards this article; however, we would like to still touch base on the most common scenarios we see arise in our field of expertise.

Which dog breed

I

is best for you?

n this month’s article we will go over the biggest question that every new, aspiring dog owner wonders initially, “Which dog breed will suit me best?” There are many different breeds, along with sizes. Certain breeds have been conditioned overtime to be more obedient than others. Some more active than others, and some outdoors vs indoors. The decision of

which breed will best suit your needs and lifestyle is a very important question each person should ask themselves before adopting and gaining the responsibility of a life on their hands. Choosing the right breed can make or break the amazing experience of having a pet in your life and friendly companion to share activities with. One of the first questions you should ask yourself is if

you wish to have a dog that is just as outdoorsy as you are, or if you wish to have a furry companion that stays indoors mostly as you do. If you live in an apartment or condo, an indoor dog may be a better option overall. For those who live in a house with a back or front fenced yard, a larger dog is a possibility to keep in mind, along with small breeds too. If you already have children or older family members within the household, would they be comfortable around a large dog or would a smaller dog be easier to handle? Some breeds are more vocal than others. Huskies are one among many types of dogs that are famous for making various unique sounds and being very vocal. If you’re looking for a quieter dog that doesn’t bark too much, then maybe a Husky is not meant for you! If you are an adventurous person, who loves to go camping and on hikes, then a larger, active dog may be a better fit for your lifestyle. In this case, dogs like German Shepherds are known for being very active and alert to commands. If you already have other pets in the house, no matter which species, it may be a good idea to consider what type of new family member would help in keeping peace within the household. A more

14

Besides exercise and noise levels, another major factor to consider is how much time you are able to provide towards the new dog you wish to adopt. As much as we would all love to divide our time properly and give as much attention as possible to every aspect of our life, we are only human at the end of the day. Certain breeds require a lot of attention and time, such as Huskies, Border Collies, Pugs, Yorkshire Terriers, English Bulldogs, Dalmatians, Jack Russels, Labrador Retrievers, etc. However, some breeds do not require as much attention at all and are very sufficient at self care while owners are gone to work. Basset hounds and bulldogs are both very affectionate and relaxed breeds, however as much as they both love to go for walks and exercise, they can not tolerate extreme amounts. With the amount of time you have for your dog depending on your lifestyle, another thing to keep in mind is the grooming process. Some dogs require regular maintenance of being groomed, such as Poodles, however others require almost none at all, like Beagles. Choosing a breed may feel like a difficult task at hand, however you should always feel free to contact your local veterinarian and discuss which options are best suited for you. Selecting the right breed that is meant for you can make the experience of having a pet dog a beautiful journey. It is better to have done your research and decided fully which breed you wish to adopt than to sometimes go in blindly not knowing what to expect. Such cases can lead to neglect or anxiety that can cross into the borderline area of abuse. To avoid such, it is always important to educate ourselves and better prepare for what is ahead. Knowing all about vestibular rehabilitation

V

estibular disorders are characterised often as problems with symptoms of vertigo, dizziness, visual disturbance, and/or imbalance. Additionally, one of the consequences of having a vestibular disorder is that symptoms frequently cause people to adopt a sedentary lifestyle in order to avoid bringing on, or worsening, dizziness and imbalance. As a result, decreased muscle strength and flexibility, increased joint stiffness, and reduced stamina can occur. We at MJ Physio are aware that symptoms due to vestibular disorders can diminish quality of life and impact all aspects of daily living. They also contribute to emotional problems such as anxiety and depression. Evidence has shown that vestibular rehabilitation can be effective in improving symptoms related to many vestibular (inner ear/balance) disorders. Our vestibular physiotherapist at MJ physio is able to test vestibular abnormalities and identify patients who are “appropriate candidates for therapy. We use diagnosis based strategies for designing and implementing therapy. We apply specific therapy protocols within individualized programs for patients. We Initiate and implement a comprehensive vestibular rehabilitation

Deepika Padukone: Impact, longevity define a film’s success A ctress Deepika Padukone says the success of any film depends on its impact and longevity in the market.

“I feel that now, more than ever before for me, success of a movie is really about the impact it is able to have on people’s lives. Are we able to change mindsets? Are we able to make an impact? And don’t get me wrong, not every story needs to be hard-hitting. It could be a simple emotion, like joy or love. As long as it makes you feel something, think (about) something, and evoke emotions. I think, for me, that truly is the meter of success. Also, the film should have longevity. A film that I would want to watch 10 years from now, for me, is a success,” said Deepika, at the launch of her upcoming film “Chhapaak”.

The trailer launch was also attended by the film’s director Meghna Gulzar and Deepika’s co-star Vikrant Massey. In the film, Deepika portrays real-life acid attack survivor

www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

Laxmi Agarwal.

Deepika also talked about working with prosthetics and make-up artists to get the look of an acid attack victim right. “It is so Ironic, even I didn’t know what I would feel when I saw myself in the mirror for the first time (after make-up). I remember that moment very clearly, when we were doing the look test at Fox Studio office. It took me four to five hours for the look, and when I did look at myself in the mirror, I told Meghna that I still felt like myself. Nothing had changed. That is the day I found my character, and I knew what I need to do in this movie. I don’t think we are defined by our external appearances,” she said.

Talking about taking up such a challenging and gut-wrenching story, Deepika said she found the story inspiring and knew Meghna Gulzar would do justice to the film. “It is not often that you come

across a story that inspires you so much, and it’s not about the incident as much as it’s about the triumph over it. I have been extremely fortunate to meet Laxmi Aggarwal. One of the most important things is the marriage between having that story and also having the right person to tell it. I could see the sincerity and the honesty, and I knew I was in good hands,” the actress explained. Deepika added: “Very often, you come across great stories but you also need a right director to tell the story in an authentic, honest and responsible manner -- especially when you’re narrating a story like this one.” “Chhapaak is produced” by Deepika Padukone and Meghna Gulzar in collaboration with Fox Star Studios. It is scheduled on January 10.

Understanding sustainable fashion: The complete guide to be checked

W

e always encourage you to embrace your individual sense of style and fashion because while trends come and go your individuality sustains, and it must thrive in your self expression. However your individuality cannot sustain unless you understand the impact of your choices in the long run and how it impacts the world that we live in - from society to our beloved planet. Sustainable fashion is a term that has gained momentum in the last few years, though its importance was well acknowledged long before. This popularity has allowed more and more people to understand how the fashion industry impacts the world. If you are confused about the term, or aren’t sure how to indulge into sustainable fashion, and be a better global citizen generally, this is your complete guide to sustainable fashion. What is sustainable fashion?

Production of fabrics, clothing, shoes, handbags, make up, accessories, and other glittery shiny things that we love often has a huge environmental impact. Sustainable fashion simply means products that have been created in a way that is

immediately and aggressively.

truly sustainable for the environment. This means these products are made in such a way that they do not cause serious environmental havoc, limit carbon emissions and reduce carbon footprints, utilise dyes that are friendly for the Earth and minimal chemicals, while using less water and causing minimal impact on the environment. This includes products which are often made using recycled material or materials which can be reused and recycled in the future. Sustainable fashion also extends to products that have a long shelf life and are vegan or at least cruelty free. Sustainable fashion requires products to be high quality as well so they create less waste over a prolonged period of time, which means they are definitely beneficial for buyers and users.

sustainable counterparts, sustainable fashion goods are generally longer lasting and better for your health and wellbeing. Why we need sustainable fashion? Sustainable Fashion is the urgent need of the hour because Mother Earth has taken a beating from human hands long enough. The multiple ways in which the fashion industry has contributed to the deploration of our planet’s condition are

The cost of cheaper production across continents for shoes or apparel is not only that underage workers and unskilled labour is heavily exploited, but the unnecessary and incessant transportation leads to a huge carbon footprint behind each product. There are huge amounts of water which are wasted trying to produce low quality fast fashion that does not last in anyone’s wardrobe for more than one season. Dyes and chemical conditioners pollute the environment, and glittery make up requires excavation and mining of mica and other minerals which is never good for the planet. How can you contribute? You can significantly help the cause of saving our home by being a little more mindful in your purchases and choices. Reading labels and educating yourself about the practices of huge enterprises in the first step towards this long term goal.

Seven

Strategies

for Highly Effective New Year’s Resolutions We have just stepped into a new year and there are so many of us who come up with yearly resolutions to be the better version of ourselves. Be it a friend or a family member, there usually is at least one person that definitely asks you about what your resolutions are for the year ahead.

W

hether you like to make them or not, research has found that people who make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than people who don’t make resolutions at all. But, we also understand that it’s not so easy to keep your determination intact as life returns to normal just after this holiday mode ends and your old habits of mind and action start testing your resolution, pulling you away from the new ones you resolved to create. But, there’s a science to success when it comes to achieving goals and making life changes – whether on January 1st or any other time of year. We have accumulated some ways and strategies to help you make the changes you want in the year ahead – together with making the right resolutions to begin with. I hope you will read it, but more so, I hope you will apply them and inculcate them to your daily life so that the upcoming year truly becomes the best year of your life. 1. Know Your Why. For any resolution to stick, it has to be aligned with your core values. We all want to achieve a lot of things, so many thoughts about them cross our heads, for example, looking better or getting richer, but your resolutions have to surpass the border line of just being superficial desires and connect with what truly matters most to you. In other words, as we mentioned above, you have to “Know your why” and feel strictly passionate about

22

JANUARY 2020

www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

the goals you set for yourself. If you don’t, then when the going gets tough or your alarm goes off at 5:30am, you won’t have the determination to stick to your plan. You have to connect your resolutions to those things that give you a sense of purpose and at the same time align with your core values. 2. Be Specific. Random resolutions to ‘eat better, get fitter, be happier, relax more or have better life balance’ are fated for failure because they lack specificity. When it comes to sticking to plans, the more specific you are, it is more likely that you will be able to succeed. Be it just for your own sake but try to describe your goals and resolutions in ways that allow you to track your growth and development and also assess your success. For example, if you want to build a better connection with your partner, try to have at least one date night per month, or, as I’ve decided with my better-half, one weekend away – without our kids annually. Likewise if you’re committed to a better health and fitness regime, schedule specifically the number of days or workouts you’ll fit into each week. 3. Don’t Just Think It, Ink it! A Stanford University study found that when people wrote down what they exactly want to achieve, it increased the probability of them achieving it by over 70%. But, don’t just write down the specific goal, note down how you will feel when you’ve accomplished it. What you are going to do when you have achieved the goal. When you have finished penning your desires, write them down on sticky notes, in particular the words that inspire you most about your goal and put them around your home/office to remind you of why you

are dedicated to doing what it takes to bring your goal into reality. 4. Design Your Environment. Never underestimate the power of your environment to support or interrupt your success. Design your environment so that it’s hard not to do what you have decided. Create a improvement chart, have someone from your family and friends to be your cheer squad and celebrate your achievements, find someone to hold you accountable, hire a trainer, join a group, create a blog. Similarly, if there are people or things in your life that pull you down or off track, address them directly and set whatever boundaries to keep them away. 5. Narrow Your Efforts. Trying to do too many things at once can make you so unfocused and confused about what you really want and how you are going to achieve it. You won’t even realize which direction you are going in order to achieve the goal. So, set yourself up for success and start with JUST ONE MAJOR responsibility in the first few days. Then gradually, move up the ladder and break your goal down into small steps. Focus on these little steps rather than a strong start! 6. Focus On The Process. It’s easy to get caught up in an early wave of eagerness, only to come crashing down when your initial efforts don’t produce immediate and amazing results. So focus on the process itself, and develop greater ability of the actual activity, habit or skill you want to acquire. For instance, if you want to become fit, focus on being able to jog a little bit further every time you go for a walk, rather than being able to run 10 miles within a week. Remember, PERSISTENCE ALWAYS PAYS OFF. But, you have to never give in! 7. Forgive Your Failures. Your setbacks and failures will not define your success in the year ahead or any year. HOW YOU RESPOND WILL. If you happen to mess up, lose your determination, press the snooze button or revert to a familiar well-practiced behavior, don’t stress or beat up on yourself. It is okay, if you didn’t go to the gym like you’d planned. How about indulging in 5 minutes of stretching? When it comes to slipping up and tripping up, you are in good company. It happens to everyone. Just don’t let your mishaps, setbacks and failures mean more than they do. Reflect on the lessons they hold, make adjustments and alterations accordingly and get back in the saddle. Never forget that life rewards those who work at it. Sonakshi Sinha: I do get nervous before film’s release

S

onakshi Sinha understands that the fate of a film is not in one’s hands and audience is the final judge, but that doesn’t deter her from getting nervous before the release of a new project. “Every film has its own journey in your life, and holds importance. I do get nervous before a release, like anyone,” Sonakshi told in an interview when asked if she has the same amount of anxiety almost a decade later, as she had when her first film released. “I learned quite early in my career to not take it too seriously, since the fate of a film is not in your hands. You do your best and give your 100 per cent and rest is up to the audience eventually,” she added. Sonakshi, daughter of actorturned-politician Shatrughan Sinha and Poonam Sinha, entered Bollywood with Salman Khan’s “Dabangg” in 2010. She credits Salman for making her realise her “true calling”. “’Dabangg’ is what made me realise what my true calling is. I never thought I would end up being an actor till Salman told me that I am doing this film. But from Day one on set I knew this is where I

Talking about her bond with Salman, the actress said: “My bond with him goes beyond a professional relationship of co-actors. I knew him before I started acting. Our families have known each other for a long time now, and I have known him more as a friend than a co-star.”

Sonakshi says she has evolved as an artiste with experience. “I have been lucky enough to have worked on films from different genres enhancing my exp-erience,” she said.

After making a successful debut with “Dabangg”, she has starred in hits such as “Rowdy Rathore”, “Lootera” and “Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty”. However, many of her films like “Tevar”, “Akira”, “Noor”, “Force 2” and “Kalank” fared below expectations, too. She returns as Rajjo with “Dabangg 3”. Directed by Prabhu Deva, the Salman Khan-starrer also features Arbaaz Khan, Amole Gupte, Mahie Gill, and Tinnu Anand. Preity Zinta makes a special appearance, and the film marks the debut of actor-filmmaker Mahesh Manjrekar’s daughter Saiee Manjrekar. “Dabangg 3” is scheduled to open on December 20. Asked if she fears getting trapped in the Rajjo image, Sonakshi said: “Not at all! End of the day it was my first

A

s temperatures start to fall, your risk of a heart attack begins to climb. The drop in weather triggers natural rise in blood pressure and cholesterol. It is believed that the risk of having a heart attack was greatest on days when the temperature was below freezing and there is up to a 31 percent increase in heart attacks in the coldest months of the year compared with the warmest. Winter weather, studies suggest, may be especially risky for your heart if you’ve already had a heart attack, have heart disease, or are older than 65. As per Dr. Bhurji, “cold weather sometimes creates a perfect storm of risk factors for cardiovascular problems.”

Secure your heart health in winter

Many of these risks stem from a mismatch between supply and demand.

Cold weather can decrease the supply of oxygen-rich blood to your heart muscle. And it can put you in situations that force your heart to work harder; as a result, your heart demands more oxygen-rich blood. Such a mismatch-a smaller supply of oxygen to the heart coupled with a greater demand for oxygen by the heart-sets you up for a heart attack. Below, we summarize some of the many situations that can lead to heart attack during the colder months-and how to minimize them. Risk: Overexertion Winter sometimes causes us to overexert. We walk briskly against a strong wind, shovel the walk, push a car out of the snow. Exertion increases the heart’s demand for oxygen. “If there’s a blockage in a heart artery that reduces blood flow to the heart muscle, supply may not be sufficient to meet the demand,” Many of us have blockages we don’t know about. Solution: “Be especially careful about exerting yourself outdoors in winter. Pushing an inch of snow is one thing, but shoveling heavy, wet, deep snowfall is very risky. I encourage my patients to avoid

www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

doing so, especially if they have risk factors for heart disease,” Risk factors include smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, family history, and obesity. It is better to have someone else shovel snow for you. Risk: Cold exposure When your body is suddenly exposed to icy temperatures, your blood vessels clamp down. Solution: “Don’t head out the door half-dressed. Put on your coat, hat, and gloves in advance.” Risk: Overheating While it’s important to dress warmly in cold weather, it’s also important to avoid getting overheated—for example, from physical activity. If you get overheated, your body will need to release the heat. Too much warm clothing may prevent that, causing blood vessels to dilate, which can dramatically lower blood pressure. “When blood pressure drops, it can reduce the heart’s blood supply, possibly leading to a heart attack.”

Solution: Dress in layers. If you start to sweat, remove a layer until you cool down, then replace the layer. Better yet, go inside and take a break. Risk: Influenza A bout of seasonal flu can trigger a heart attack in people already at risk for heart

disease. The flu causes a fever, which makes your heart beat faster (raising its demand for oxygen). The flu also can cause dehydration, which can reduce your blood pressure (lowering the heart’s supply of oxygen). “Again, when demand exceeds supply, it may lead to a heart attack. Solution: Try to avoid getting the flu by washing your hands often with soap and water and getting a flu shot. If you do get flu symptoms, such as fever, cough, or body aches, call your doctor Avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of fluids or eating waterrich foods such as fruit or soup. Risk: Missed prescriptions Snowy or icy weather can keep you from following through on your doctor visits or getting your prescriptions filled on time. “If you haven’t had your medications, and blood pressure is not adequately controlled, it can increase heart attack risk.” Solution: In winter months, it’s best to have a supply of medication large enough so that you won’t run out if there’s rough weather. “Not waiting until the last minute to fill prescriptions is another wise move, especially if weather can make transportation a problem.”

es, avocadoes taste amazing. They have mighty powers to even cure many ailments and you’ll be pleasantly surprised at what they can do for your heart, mind, and skin.

New York Times best-selling author Frank Lipman, MD, says, “Avocados are truly one of nature’s little miracle foods and I encourage you to enjoy them several times a week.” From adding it to your favorite smoothies or whipping up some tasty guacamole, the options are endless. Here’s what avocados wish you knew. Your cholesterol improves While avocados may have gotten a bad reputation for being high in calories and fat—half contains

113 calories and 10 grams of fat—they mostly give you monounsaturated fat, which is healthy in moderation. The good fat boosts your levels of good HDL cholesterol while lowering the bad LDL cholesterol.

You have better digestion Half of an avocado contains just under 5 grams of dietary fiber (depending on the size). Nutritionist Megan Ware, RDN, reports that adding avocado to your daily dietary regimen can help prevent constipation and maintain healthy digestion. Another benefit of this high fiber fruit is that you will feel full longer. By adding avocado slices to your toast, sandwich, or salad, you can stay satiated for up to three hours. You get protection from disease and infection Avocados are a great source of B vitamins, which help prevent disease and infection, reports WebMD. They are also loaded with vitamins C and E, plus natural plant chemicals that may help prevent cancer.

Because they’re high in antioxidant phytochemicals (such as lutein and zeaxanthin), avocados may help prevent cataracts and macular degeneration, reports Ware. You’ll sleep better

Not only do avocadoes taste great, but they’re also loaded with magnesium (19.5 milligrams for half of an avocado), which experts consider an anti-stress nutrient, says nutrition expert Elise Museles. Just make sure to wash your avocado before eating it. You’ll have a natural glow Glowing skin, bright eyes, and shiny hair are added perks from eating this amazing super food. This is because of its fat-soluble vitamins and monounsaturated fats. While these benefits come from eating avocados, there are also advantages from using them topically, reports Medical News Today. Here’s a trick for ripening avocados in under ten minutes.

Lohri:

History, importance and why it is celebrated

T

he festival of Lohri, which is celebrated primarily by Sikhs and Hindus all across the India, marks the end of winter season and is traditionally believed to welcome the sun to the northern hemisphere. Observed a night before Makar Sankranti, this festival is celebrated with great pomp and show, especially in the north Indian region. One of the first Hindu festivals of the year, it is essentially termed as the festival of the farmers, the festival of harvest, whereby, the farmers can thank the Supreme Being. Lohri is a way to spread the joy of seeing the sparkling pearls of rabi crops amidst traditional folk songs, dance and food. Lohri celebrations – History Lohri’s origin dates back to the Indus valley civilisation. Since this civilisation prospered in the areas of northern India and Pakistan, the festival is primarily celebrated in a similar manner in those regions. It has various other names in the other parts of India such as Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Makar Sankranti in Bengal, Magha Bihu in Assam and Tai Pongal in Kerala.

Lohri is one of the most commonly celebrated festivals in India and it is a way to spread the joy of seeing the sparkling pearls of Rabi crops amidst traditional folk songs, dance and food. religious as well as socio-cultural traditions and events. The most famous and interesting legend behind Lohri is the story associated by Dulla Bhatti. Dulla Bhatti was popular among the poor, akin to Robin Hood, at the time of Mughal king Akbar. He used to plunder the rich community and distribute the loot among the poor and needy. This made him famous and revered among the populace. The other stories say that the word Lohri has come from the root ‘loh‘, which means a big iron griddle or tava on which chapattis are made for community feasts. Another version says that the Lohri word comes from ‘Loi’, who was the wife of the celebrated reformer Kabir Das. Importance Originally, Lohri was celebrated the night just before Winter

Solstice. It used to mark the coldest night of the year, which was followed by the longest night and shortest day of the year. Since the night is extremely chilly, people protected themselves by burning the fire and keeping it throughout the night and spending their time around the fire, propitiating the deities of the sun and fire. This festival also marks the harvesting time of rabi crops, that is, the crops of the winter season. The people of Punjab, the most fertile belt of India, celebrate the harvesting of sugar cane thorough this festival. Sesame seeds, jaggery, radish, mustard and spinach are also harvested, and they are the primary attractions of the festivity. People make sweets called revari and gajak, and staples such as Sarso ka Saag with Makki ki roti. Radish is one of the attractions of the feast and is also included in it.

Customs and Traditions There are various customs and traditions associated with the festival of Lohri. Two-three days before, children and the girls of the house go from door to door asking for Lohri items such as sweets, sugar, sesame seeds, jaggery and cow dung cakes. Since this festival marks a thanks giving to the sun god, the mother earth, the fields and the fire, they offer oblations to the fire in the name of various demigods and chant their names and mantras. People circumambulate the fire, which marks a sign of respect and reverence and pray for their prosperity and health. The whole mood continues and at the end, the feast is organised, which consists of delicious dishes.

A case for migration

This Land is Our Land: An Immigrant’s Manifesto

People have migrated through the ages, in search of greener pastures, more abundant food sources, better climatic conditions, and after defeat in wars or to escape them. Modern day migration is often to flee from war, ethnic rivalries, effect of colonial practices that denuded the land and made it unproductive or to seek better economic prospects. But migration has become a controversial term as politicians have used racism and xenophobia to divert attention from their policies by demonizing migrants.

I

brought political instability and strife that often forced people to flee their homes. In the 1950s, it overthrew a Guatemalan leader whose land reform polices went against the interests of the USowned fruit company.

llegals, migrants, aliens, foreigners, stateless are some of the terms used to describe the newcomers, while US President Donald Trump typically uses much harsher epithets. In the past decade, anti-migration rhetoric has come to rule the public discourse in the West and many other countries. But, it is those migrants that boost economic activity and perform the dirty work that residents of the host country are loathe to undertake. Suketu Mehta’s “This Land is our Land: An Immigrant’s Manifesto” is a searing broadside on migration that describes the historical causes of migration, the impact of migration on individuals as well as the native and the host countries, dispels the myths and falsehoods that surround migration and presents a well reasoned argument in favor of migration. According to Mehta, about one-quarter billion people or one in 29 humans live in a country that is not their country of birth. He explains how the West has benefited from migration and how western countries need and will continue to need migrants to boost their economies.

A migrant to America himself, Mehta arrived in the United States from India in the mid1970s. He describes his family moving “all over the earth, from India to Kenya to England to the United States and back again -- and still moving.” He relates the racism and discrimination, he and his family encounter in America despite being part of the so-called privileged “model” minority.

Mehta’s grandfather had a pithy response when asked in a London park in the 1980s, “Why are you here?” He said: “Because we are the creditors. You took all our wealth, our Mehta calls the debate on diamonds. Now we have migration as “hypocritical”. In his come to collect.” It was an apt book, he juxtaposes his personal response to British colonialism, experience of migration, his but Mehta extends it not just family history, research and to the old imperialists but also other tales of migration, to the United States for its together with reportage from economic colonialism. And with ground level and the various it, he provides the basis for the underlying causes of migration demand for reparations. to construct a powerful When there is talk of vindication for migration. reparations for slavery,

36

JANUARY 2020

colonialism is not far behind as brutally oppressive and exploitative. Mehta holds that present day migration is a long-term effect of colonialism. Colonialism and slavery destroyed economies and displaced thousands of people to meet labour requirements in new colonies and at home. Colonial powers like Britain and France drew up borders (about 40 per cent of national borders worldwide, according to Mehta) without regard to ground realities. They drew straight lines on a map of Africa to divide the homelands of tribes into new nations that resulted in huge displacement during the ensuing wars and civil strife. The US did not have colonies like the major imperial powers but it has controlled and influenced nations with its economic power. America’s arbitrary interventions in many countries, especially in Central America, propping up dictators and repressive regimes

Mehta travelled to the migrant crossing places to learn about what he describes as ‘survival migration’ and listen to migrant stories. He visited arrival points in the Mediterranean coast and the Wagah-Attari border. He describes Friendship Park at the border of California and Mexico where people gather to catch a glimpse of loved one across on old wire mesh fence which allowed them only the faintest touch if they pushed their little finger through the fence. Migrants are not a drain on society, according to Mehta, they contribute to the places they go to and also to the places they leave in the form of remittances. Wealthy countries with aging populations need migrants to revitalize the economy. Migrants constitute three per cent of the world’s population and contribute nine per cent of the gross domestic product. The book is a significant contribution to the discussion on migration. It is an angry book, polemical in nature with a wealth of data but written in a highly readable style. (Shubha Singh is a foreign policy and strategic affairs commentator. A Girl in a Whirl Continued issue (Part 38)

IELTS exam preparation

The other day, my mom-in-law took me to Prof. Virdi, the director of GTP Marvelous College, Surrey. I had seen their ads and several interviews of Prof. Avtar S. Virdi on Lashkara program, Vision TV. I had also seen their ads in many Punjabi newspapers. Their most impressive ad I had heard on Red FM 93.1 radio. I learned that I would have to take the academic IELTS exam and score 7.5 bands. I also had to teach in a school voluntarily for certain hours. I decided to prepare for the IELTS exam first. My mom-in-law had me registered there for the IELTS coaching. I started my classes from the very next day. I learned Past, Present and Future Simple tenses from his ‘Marvelous English Speaking Course part-1’. Prof. Virdi claimed that he had prepared a special chart with his research, and students were learning English easily with its help. I learned many grammar rules on the very first day. This also developed my interest in learning English. I got six books at my admission time all authored by Prof. Virdi. The main thing I liked was that nobody was making fun of anyone in the class. Especially, all students got new ideas besides

38

learning English from ‘Marvelous English Multi-Purpose Guide’. Our group discussion was very interesting part of our class. Quiz was even a better way to make us think and learn more. My favorite topics of discussion were – • Do you believe in god? Why or why not? • Do you like music? Why or why not? • Will you like to become what your parents want? Why or why not? • Why do people believe in God? • Do you believe in ghosts? Why or why not? • Do you believe in witchcrafts? Why or why not? • Do you believe in palmistry? Why or why not? • Do you believe in previous births? Why or why not? • Why do people work? • What do you think is success? • Is it necessary to have a good qualification in order to succeed in life? Why or why not? • If god comes before you, what will you ask for? • Should we tell a lie sometime? Why or why not? The most interesting thing was that all these questions were answered in a very interesting way in ‘Marvelous English Multi-Purpose

Guide’.

Is love marriage better? The other day, we had essay-writing session. We were told very important topics that had come in previous IELTS exams. The common topics were – • Should seniors live with their families or be kept in senior homes? •C an the damage done to our environment be fixed? • I nformation Technology has made this world a better place to live. Do you agree? Discuss. •U niversity education is a lifetime experience. Discuss. • Terrorism in the world can be curbed. Discuss. Prof. Virdi had mentioned both sides of the topics with a great conviction in his book ‘Marvelous English Essays’. But the most interesting topic I liked was – A love marriage is a better way to find our life partner or an arranged marriage?

‘Jumanji: The Next

Level’ is fun on the run for the gang to be sucked into the game again. Whata¿s more, Spencer’s grandpa (Danny DeVito) and his buddy (Danny Glover) get pulled in, too. The world of Jumanji is unpredictably dangerous as ever but the twist here is that the human protagonists don’t end up as the same gaming characters as they did in the last film. This leads to random humour.

By: Vinayak Chakravorty/IANS Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Awkwafina, Nick Jonas Direction: Jake Kasdan Rating:*** The odd bunch is back again, in the oddest game you have known. “Jumanji: The Next Level” keeps things in more or less at the same level as its 2017 predecessor, and still manages to pack a punch. In many ways, this new film of the franchise would seem like an easier job than the 2017 release, “Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle”. The challenge for that film was to bring

back an idea which worked over two decades ago, in the 1995 Robin Williams-starrer “Jumanji”, and reorganise the 90s fantasy comedy for the new-generation mind space. “The Next Level” is merely following up what worked a couple of years ago. Like any smart sequel aimed at cashing in on the popularity of a franchise that’s up and running, “The Next Level” tries to deliver what worked once, with a bigger bang. Most of it should thrill the humongous hardcore fan base. The big action scenes and boisterous gags are all in place, and the climax ties up the adventure with

trademark aplomb. A minimal storyline takes off a couple of years after the incidents of the 2017 film. Spencer, Bethany, Martha and Fridge are in college now. His friends aren’t aware, but Spencer had kept the broken Jumanji video game, and he now gets it going after repairing it. Which means it is time

The CGI work and choreographed action sequences are nothing exceptional, but are sufficient to regale and also carry the plot forward. As always, the film is mainly enjoyable for its quirky mix of characters, along with a plot that runs thin but is nonetheless wacky and never dull. “Jumanji: The Next Level” is fun on the run, aimed at pleasing the whole family, just right for the holiday season coming up. It continues to be a ride on the wild side. Will there be a next level beyond “The Next Level”? Hang around for the mid-credit scene at the end, and you’ll know.

‘Pati Patni Aur Woh’ is a fun watch

Cast: Kartik Aaryan, Bhumi Pednekar, Ananya Panday, Aparshakti Khurana Direction: Mudassar Aziz Rating:***

The interesting thing about the reimagined “Pati Patni Aur Woh” is its setting. Version 2019 is based in smalltown Kanpur, and it narrates the story of a middle-class couple in that city. In BR Chopra’s 1978 original, the protagonists belonged to the middle-class too, but they lived in Bombay. It seems pertinent how, 41 years on, this remake picks the plot’s extramarital core from the megapolis and puts it right in the centre of smalltown India, which is learning to openly discuss sex, fidelity, virginity and marriage (the idea is wittily underlined in the opening scenes, where the hero asks his prospective bride her hobbies and she replies: “Humein sex karna pasand hai”). At a time when remakes, reboots and recreations have become the norm, writer-director Mudassar Aziz’s reorganising of a BR Chopra comedy classic to woo new-age viewers would seem like an ambitious idea. His credibility lies in the

42

JANUARY 2020

Aziz cannot resist the odd moment of melodrama. Such sequences slow down the story and also break the rhythm of humour. Overall, however, this is enjoyable fare. Maintaining a simple, straight narrative that does not delve deep into relationship complexities, Aziz’s screenplay lets the cast have a field day.

fact that his version holds its own. For those who may not be familiar with Chopra’s 1978 film, it is a comedy of errors centred on the extramarital fling of a middleaged man (played impeccably by Sanjeev Kumar). Aziz retains that basic idea in his 2019 redux, but changes everything else in the new film, including key plot points, character details, plot progression and a lot of what happens towards the end. Like its original, and despite acquiring a new-age irreverent edge, “Pati Patni Aur Woh” 2019 manages to stay funny without losing out on decency, despite moving dangerously close to the domain of political incorrectness. Kartik Aaryan makes an amusing Chintu Tyagi, hero of the piece. He has been papa’s boy for most parts and, after topping his engineering exam, has landed a cushy government job, just as dad wanted. Time now to wed, declare his parents, and soon, he finds a perfect arranged match in physics teacher Vedika (Bhumi Pednekar).

The marriage is blissful till Tapasya Singh (Ananya Panday) from Delhi arrives in Chintu’s life. He won’t cheat on his wife, but Chintu finds the idea of spending a lot of ‘fun time’ with the gorgeous Tapasya too tempting to resist. He starts lying to Vedika, in order to spend more and more time with Tapasya, and the situation only gets more complicated for Chintu. Although funny for most parts,

Kartik Aaryan is fast emerging as one of the most bankable comic heroes of GenNow Bollywood. As Chintu Tyagi, he once again plays out the believable and harried Indian male with aplomb. His transition from the bumbler with a goofy laugh to a man stylish enough to be spotted at Tapasya’s side is gradual and effortless. Bhumi Pednekar’s as the ‘patni’ Vedika gets an interesting twist towards the end, which changes much of the climax, giving the reworked story a contemporary edge. Comparatively, Ananya Panday as Tapasya, ‘woh’ of the tale, banks wholly on screen presence to rise above her archetypal character. For a two-film old, Ananya does admirably.

The 2020 Acura MDX: Acura’s Journey Towards Sustainability

Luxury Sport Hybrid power starting at $ 56,590

The next level Acura MDX is one of the best in the luxury crossover SUV segment, one of the most affordable and represents attainable luxury with an ecoconscious agenda. The 2020 Acura MDX is a 3-row luxury SUV seating up to seven passengers, offering a generous suite of driver-assist technologies, standard features and is available in six different trim variations with three powertrain options. Of these trims, the MDX Sport Hybrid garners attention by combining sport level performance and conservative emissions for those who aren’t prepared to go fully electric.

Performance Every Acura MDX powertrain is adapted from Acura’s NSX supercar, featuring the optional SH-AWD® system that enhances all-season traction and handling for optimal fuel conservation. The 2020 MDX Sport Hybrid executes smooth and assertive steering, and 312 horsepower is derived from a powerful 3.0-litre i-VTEC V6 engine combined with an electric 3-motor hybrid powertrain. For fuel preference drivers, a 3.5-litre Direct Injection i-VTEC® V6 engine is available on non-hybrid trim variations. Fuel economy is outstanding for a luxury midsize size SUV with an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.

Design Generous standard features lend to the affordable nature and value of the Acura MDX Sport Hybrid. A comfortable and spacious cabin functions as a quiet respite from the outside elements, while added features such as tri-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, heated front seats and a power moonroof create a relaxing environment with luxury functionality. Added design elements from Jewel Eye LED headlights to a convenient power tailgate put the MDX Sport Hybrid among the top in its segment.

Sustainability The Acura brand champions sustainability and environmental protection among its core values by implementing green initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and incidents of pollution. A luxury division of Honda, Acura Canada shares the same initiatives as the Honda Canada Foundation who support organizations like Earth Rangers, A Greener Future, and Forest Recovery Canada, resulting in 180,000 new trees planted across Canada. By 2030, the goal is for twothirds of sales to be electrified vehicles in efforts towards a carbon-free society. At present, vehicles have maintained 90% design recyclability since 2004.

Acura’s eco-conscious agenda extends far beyond selective partnerships and electrified intentions for the future. At present, Acura offers various hybrid powertrain options, with vehicles crafted to promote fuel efficiency down to aerodynamic designs. Dealerships and offices, manufacturing operations, recyclable vehicle materials and waste disposal strategies are all designed to reduce our environmental impact. Leading by example, Acura is among the first North American automakers to gain the ISO 14001 certification, the international standard for effective environmental management systems.

driver technologies are highly intuitive safety features that contribute to vehicle stability, traction, steering and parking, including a multi-view camera system and Lane Keeping Assist system. Acura is committed to the safety of all passengers and consistently strive towards building the best vehicles to encourage joyful and confident driving.

Technology & Safety The 2020 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid offers a diverse suite of standard safety and technology features that would typically be provided by upgrade. Premium driver connectivity is offered with 3D View Navigation, SiriusXM satellite radio, and AcuraLink system with wireless Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone compatibility. ou may live sustainably at home but what about when you travel? What does that even mean? Does green travel begin when you reach your destination or does it start when you’re sitting in work on a project sitting at your office desk, desperately plotting your next escape? Is it about keeping your carbon footprint light or should you also be conscious about giving back to local communities? To break it down, sustainable travel is about being a responsible traveler and making smarter choices in every aspect of your trip. That doesn’t mean you need to totally overhaul your vacation though. We’ve put together a list of practical tips that will help you along the way, even if you’re just getting started on your sustainable travel journey.

Travel off-peak or off-beat European capitals like Tallinn, Ljubljana and Belgrade offer centuries-old architecture, hip art scenes and plenty of winding streets to explore without jostling through hordes of limbs and selfie sticks. And Canada’s national parks are just as breathtaking as the ones you’ll find in the US but with a fraction of the crowds. You should also travel off-peak.

Go by road or rail Trains, planes and automobiles. Which one is best? Air travel is the natural enemy of sustainable travel because it wreaks havoc on the environ-

Ways to make a positive impact on your next trip To break it down, sustainable travel is about being a responsible traveler and making smarter choices in every aspect of your trip. ment. The Swedes have even coined a new phrase, ‘flygskam’ or ‘flight shame,’ referring to the feeling of environmental guilt

travellers have over flying. Unfortunately though, sometimes flying is non-negotiable. If you live in New York and need to visit Shanghai, you’re not going to take the slow boat to China. So the best solution is to fly less.

Opt for eco-conscious accommodation Eco-conscious accommodation has come on leaps and bounds in recent years thanks to changing attitudes among consumers. Now the industry knows what’s good for the planet is good for profit and hotels are starting to rack up serious eco credentials. There are CO2-neutral stays on offer in places like The Brando in Tahiti, the Olakira Camp in the Serengeti, Vienna’s Hotel Stadthalle and Kong Arthur in Copenhagen, part of Arthur Hotels, which was the world’s first carbon-neutral hotel group. You can even try Zero Island, a

tourist-friendly island in Sweden that managed to go carbon neutral in one year.

Pack reusable items The best way to reduce your waste output is to produce less and packing light and purposeful. “Stick to the basics and take reusables like a water bottle, coffee cup, steel or bamboo straw, food container (collapsible ones are great for travelling), and bamboo cutlery or a spork so you can avoid single-use plastics. Take a reusable shopping bag and produce bags so you can shop plasticfree, and take zero waste toiletries, such as shampoo bars, deodorant paste, and tooth tablets. You’ll create a lot less waste.

Spend your money locally If you choose locally-owned accommodation, eat at independent restaurants, buy locally made products and choose local experiences you can make a positive impact.

Choose your animal experiences carefully Animals shouldn’t be used for human entertainment and they need to live as free from human interference as possible. If you are keen to see wild animals in their natural habitat, choose places that offer ethical and sustainable animal interactions such as elephant sanctuaries and marine conservation volunteer projects. Elephant rides should always be given a miss and avoid all experiences where animals are behaving unnaturally. The best way to travel sustainably is to be more mindful. By: Kriti Bhasin
