SAVE WISELY FOR YOUR CHILD’S EDUCATION benefit. Parents can very effectively utilize this financial benefit by investing it in RESP. Along with that, an additional amount of CESG is available for eligible children from middleand low-income families. You need to utilize these grants for maximum permissible benefit.

W

Sandeep Ahuja

e heartily congratulate parents and their children for another wonderful school year! To help you make better informed decisions for your child, we endeavour to make you aware about the current year’s RESP annual grant. We know that the cost of postsecondary education in Canada is quite high. So to ease the financial burden of parents, the government has designed a unique educational savings program namely RESP. Parents who intend to save for the post-secondary education of their children can take advantage of this wonderful savings initiative of the government. Who is RESP meant for? RESP is a great investment opportunity which enables you to save for the postsecondary education of your children. The invested/ accumulated funds can be used to pay tuition fee and other financial barriers of post-secondary education including residence, school supplies, food, and travel. Like RRSP, the funds invested in RESP grow in a tax-sheltered manner until the time you withdraw the money to cover educational expenses. It would be better if you start investing early as it will give your investment the maximum time to grow. Who can open RESP?

Make well- informed decisions about investment- don’t follow the ‘herd behaviour’

$500. But if somebody has not contributed in the past, he/she can carry-back one year and get an additional $500 grant by investing $2500 lump-sum for last year’s contribution. • Total Lifetime Limit per Saving (per Beneficiary): $7,200 • Some provinces offer their own Grant programs in addition to CESG. The federal and provincial governments contribute the grants directly into the RESP, and these additions within your contribution can significantly increase your savings. If your child doesn’t want to study further, how can you utilize the funds? If your child doesn’t wish to continue his post-secondary education, then you can:

Parents, grandparents, maternal uncle, paternal uncle, maternal aunt and friends...anybody can open RESP account for a child, and the same child can be the beneficiary of multiple RESPs.

1. N ominate a new beneficiary

Who can be the named Beneficiary?

3. T ransfer the funds into your RRSP account

You can name any child as your beneficiary and you don’t need to be related to the child.

4. D onate the funds to an educational institution

After the plan comes into force, you still have the option to change the beneficiary. As per the age of the new beneficiary, you can continue contribution within the duration of the policy. How much money can you save? The maximum lifetime contribution limit per child is $50,000 while there isn’t any annual contribution limit. This implies that as per your budget, you can invest up to $50,000 in the plan. To encourage parents to invest funds in post-secondary education of their children as early as possible, the government of Canada has devised CESG plan. CESG in a Glimpse: • Annual Grant: 20% of your annual contribution • Contribution Limit of Annual Grant:

JANUARY 2022

2. T ake back/withdraw the principal amount that you contributed, when your child is at least 21 years of age. The remaining grants and bond must be returned to the government.

CERTAIN POINTS TO BE KEPT IN MIND TO MAKE WISE INVESTMENT DECISIONS RESP is a unique savings tool that enables you to save effectively for your child’s future educational needs. To take full advantage of this opportunity, you need to pay attention to certain aspects as below: Start investing early

Exercise prudence while deciding about the RESP product and company. Instead of simply following the celebrity endorsements or investments recommended by friends; be careful before you choose the investment. Understand how an investment works Before you make any decision, it is very important to do a thorough research about available investments as it ensures that you: •u nderstand the risks associated with the investment, including the potential losses or returns; • c onsider how it fits in your existing portfolio; and, • k now the amount of fees/ any penalties for early withdrawal that you will pay Shop around for an advisor As a first time investor, we feel inclined to approach the same advisor who is being consulted by our parents, friends or relatives. But here, it is important to understand that the advisor that’s right for someone else may not be right for you. You need to choose the advisor as per your needs, the type of clients he/she works with and how involved you want to be in your investing decisions. Pay proper attention to fees You need to understand the fees you pay when you invest as they reduce your return. Before making an investment, ask questions and evaluate the available options. For instance, two investments may carry similar risk and expected return, but one may have higher fees – all else equal, the fees would affect your returns. Make optimum use of RESP as an investment account

It would be better if you start investing early as it will give your investment the maximum time to grow.

It is a proven fact that among the asset classes, equities provide the highest long-term rate of return. An early investment into an RESP will let your stocks grow for 18 years or more.

Utilize the available grant funds properly

Monitor your account statements regularly

We are indeed lucky to be in the wonderful nation Canada where the government understands the importance of healthy growth of children, and it generously supports parents in this endeavour by providing them a tax-free Universal child care

To show the activity in your account and provide an update on your investments, your financial institution sends you monthly or quarterly account statements via mail or makes them available online. Examine your statements to confirm:

• That the investments that you have bought and sold are correct. • The fees and commissions charged on the investment are correct. • The amount of gain/loss of your investments.

If you find anything unclear/incorrect, contact your financial representative immediately. Be informed about the ways you can utilize RESP funds You may use the RESP funds for any reasonable post-secondary education expense of your child in Canada as well as out of country (including apprenticeships). An added advantage is- the capital that you have contributed (not the grants or the money made from the grants) can be used for any purpose as per your need. It is evident that a wisely decided appropriate amount of investment for your child’s post-secondary education will ensure the growth of funds in the best possible manner, which will be readily available when you need them for the intended purpose. In these challenging times of COVID, we understand the value of your safety. To help you save for your child’s future safely, we can conduct the entire RESP process online so that you don’t need to travel to our office for the same. The certificate and details will be delivered to you in the comfort of your home. Besides, we are happy to announce that to commemorate the RESP Awareness Campaign; we have organized a free contest on Lohri Festival in which you can win a total cash prize of $5,000. On January 14, 2022, there will be 5 draws with $1000 cash prize for each of the draws. There is a guaranteed prize for expecting mothers and children celebrating their first Lohri. To participate, you don’t need to purchase a plan. Simply go to our website and register your kid’s name in the contest. As an independent insurance advisor working through Punjab Insurance Agency, I deal with different insurance companies offering plans for different types of insurance. I can explain to you in detail, the insurance plan options and coverage that are suitable as per your needs. Besides, I can also help you to purchase mortgage insurance, super visa insurance, disability insurance, critical illness insurance, extended medical plans, group medical plans, RESP, RRSP, travel insurance, TFSA accounts, health and dental plans along with estate planning. 5 brilliant lessons to take into 2022

What a year 2021 has been. Sadly due to the pandemic, we have all lost someone close to us but here we are alive and kicking and we are about to enter the new year. The year 2021 taught us a lot of new skills and strategies and gave us new ways to look at the little things in life.

L

ooking back over the last 365 days, Devina Kaur - radio host and producer, and the author of Too Fat Too Loud Too Ambitious shares the top five lessons we can take with us into the New Year: Know yourself and live your dreams

Get to know yourself as an observer of all that you go through, your emotions, your struggles, your heartbreaks. The better you know yourself, the more likely you are to succeed in the things that you want in your life. Self-knowledge which includes knowing your good side and not so good side results in

10

JANUARY 2022

loving every inch of yourself. As selflove is the key to being a healthier, happier, and more courageous person. Self-knowledge also makes you less afraid of following your inner spiritual power. Have faith that self-awareness will always lead you to further happiness. A quote from the book comes to mind “even though I still have fears, I also have a smile and a steady gaze aimed ahead of me. I can be happy that I didn’t let cold logic get in the way of my dreams.” Self-acceptance Learning to accept the full range of your emotions, your divinity, your sexy brilliant self brings new understanding and awareness. Like most people, we were probably never taught how to manage difficult emotions such as anger, guilt, depression. The truth is bad things will happen in life, but instead of attempting to flee or escape from harmful feelings or over-thinking them, practice mindfulness and live in awareness of all that shows. Self-knowledge leads to radical self-acceptance i.e. accepting the good and the not so good that shows up. Through sitting in stillness and silence you can ask yourself what you need in this very moment, and then follow through in action. Increase your selfworth in the new year The funny thing is, when you rise in love with yourself, everyone and everything around you looks beautiful. You attract even more

love into your life. Another part of choosing to live in love by accepting yourself means practising selflove. It’s incredibly challenging to maintain your self-love when you don’t know your own worth. It is possible to not just know your worth, but you can also consciously create it. Self-worth is knowing your value. When you practice selflove, you embrace your strengths and weaknesses; accept that not everyone will see you as the sexy brilliant being that you are; decide to flourish despite others’ judgement, and thrive by showing appreciation to yourself. Only then can you help others embrace their worth. Abundance is your true home In accepting yourself, you can accept others. You’re in charge of your life. Therefore, it’s up to you to love and appreciate your own body, divinity and mind in all of its wholenesses. As you become more empowered in your journey of becoming sexy and brilliant, you may hear statements like, “You’re not the centre of the world.” But,

in fact, each of us is the centre of our own universe: all that you call life unfolds as a result of how you think, feel, intend, speak, and act on the world. You owe it to yourself, and to the universe, to think abundantly. If you believe there is enough abundance for all of us, you will never be poor spiritually. Life is a party Try to look at life as a party: sometimes a good party, and sometimes not such a good party. When we go through dark days, and yes we all go through dark moments, then life is not such a good party. When we go through tough times, we should take care of our emotional, physical, mental, sexual, and spiritual health to the best of our ability. How? By celebrating, being aware, and accepting every situation in a holistic manner as it is. Try to find joy, even if you’re depressed, even in the negatives there is positivity. As we get to know ourselves better, we realize that the qualities we cherish in ourselves are also what we seek in a partner and in others: true honesty, keen friendship, and shared family values. We also value a state of personal awareness and high emotional and spiritual intelligence. We can learn to see our life as a party, no matter how low we may feel. When we do this, we will find ourselves less afraid to unveil our authentic sexy brilliant selves. By: N. Lothungbeni Humtsoe

Soft skills that ensure you succeed in life

S

oft skills are attributes that can either make or break an individual from all walks of life. A person’s manners and attitude towards people and situations is an extension of their personality. How you present yourself in front of the world matters a lot especially when you are stepping into corporate culture. It is an ongoing debate since the inception of the universe whether hard skills trump soft skills or vice versa. The torchbearers of both sides present fierce arguments to prove a point but a third person’s take is extremely neutral on this. Not to avoid any sort of conflict, but to take a very clear stand in this ongoing debate that will never be settled. Maddie Amrutkar, CEO and Founder of Glad U Came says, “I come from the school of thought that you need to take everyone along with you when you are trying to build an empire. No one person can do it all. One man army concept doesn’t work in our sector.” For instance, a fisherman has the knowledge of catching the fish using the bait but what good is his catch when he can’t sell the product to the vendors? And what will happen to the product if the vendors are unable to see it ahead of shops or restaurants? From hiring to promoting an employee in the organisation, these soft skills play a vital role in the employer’s decision. www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

Taking initiative, being a team player, your approach towards a problem, being solution-oriented and much more, all contribute towards the employer’s decision. It will be safe to say that it is only you who can sail or sink your own ship in this ocean of cut-throat competition. 1. Good communication is the most basic soft skill of all. Effective communication with coworkers and clients can help in networking and business development. Being a good presenter along with being a good listener, negotiator and writer to convey things are vital when it comes to communication. 2. Possessing leadership qualities along with being a team player can help your standing in the organisation. No one likes to be dominated so although you are in an authoritative position it is important to maintain a cordial relationship with everyone. 3. Dedication towards getting the work done and knowing how and when to delegate it also plays a huge

role in how well and fast you would move upwards in the organisation and in life in general. Give credit where credit is due, take help when you are in need and maintain an open and proper line of communication with one and all. 4. Having a positive attitude irrespective of the situation can take you miles ahead of your peers. Getting derailed or agitated during adverse situations will cloud your judgement and send you into a downward spiral. Maintaining your cool during turbulent times and keeping a positive mindset will help you tackle the problems in a better way. Also, being respectful towards people’s opinions and showing enthusiasm for new things will make you a more likeable person. 5. Lastly, have patience no matter what. In both the workplace and in life, losing your cool will never put you in a good light. People tend to make impulsive decisions

when they lose their patience and eventually land them in a puddle. Avoid doing that, and always keep a calm approach towards people and situations. Different things require different approaches but one thing common in all of them is you being a level headed individual. On the ending note, Maddie Amrutkar says, “On a personal level, I’m inclined towards soft skills as it is more about a person’s character and individuality. These mantras in life have certainly helped me grow as an individual and help me make my agency grow with the dream team I have in place. We strive to attain bigger and better milestones every day whilst keeping a higher moral ground. At my agency, Glad U Came, I hire employees based on their soft skills as compared to the hard skills. A person might have multiple degrees but what good are they when they have zero clue about how to use that knowledge. Also, in our line of work, maintaining strong relationships outside the organisation is as important as the oxygen we breathe.” By: N. Lothungbeni Humtsoe

Harnaaz Sandhu S

brings the Miss Universe crown to India after 21 years with my advocacy for women empowerment and menstrual hygiene.

uccessful people often say that the first step toward achieving one’s dreams is to have faith and walk confidently. Harnaaz Sandhu is one of them, who is purposefully and confidently achieving her goal. Sandhu’s Twitter bio reads, “Shine like the whole Universe is yours,” and it certainly is, as she was crowned the 70th Miss Universe at the Universe Dome in Eilat, Israel.

My mom, a gynaecologist has always made sure that I talked about this with the youth who are the future of tomorrow. Women in my community and around the world still feel uncomfortable talking about their health. And I think if somebody wants to achieve the purpose of their life, it can only be done when one is healthy. So I would like to use this platform to talk about these issues.

Sandhu is the third winner of the title from India, after Sushmita Sen and Lara Dutta who won the prestigious spot in 1994 and 2000 respectively. Sandhu has previously won the Femina Miss India Punjab 2019 and Miss Diva Universe 2021 titles. She has also acted in Punjabi films such as “Yaara Diyan Poo Baran” and “Bai Ji Kuttange.” Following Sushmita Sen, actress Lara Dutta Bhupathi became the second Indian to win the title. She was crowned the 49th Miss Universe in Nicosia, Cyprus. Much like her predecessors, Sandhu revealed earlier this year that she too has Bollywood aspirations. In an exclusive interview right after she won, Sandhu spoke to IANSlife of her victory and plans ahead.

How does it feel on winning the crown for India after 21 years? Sandhu: It’s just overwhelming and unbelievable. Finally, India is able to wear the crown of Miss Universe after 21 years, and I think we have been waiting for this for so long; the feeling is just out of this world. You were very confident that you would win and you did... What was the key to your success? Sandhu: Representing your country is a huge thing. It’s about the confidence, you need to have in yourself and the realisation from

within that this is the purpose of your life. You have to want to make the most of the platform and the opportunity that is given to you. We have to actually evolve a lot when we realise what we want to do with our life. With that faith, love and all the prayers of the people from my country, it gave me the drive I needed to win. It’s going to be a busy year. How do u plan to use the platform to make a change? Sandhu: I would love to focus on every possible issue that the organisation focuses on, along

Lara Dutta has welcomed you to the miss universe club. Anything you’d like to say on that? Sandhu: I am actually out of words. One of the queens, who gave me confidence and courage to be one amongst them, is welcoming me to the group. Women empowering women, to change the world and I am fortunate to be among them, this is something I am grateful for. Lara has really helped me a-lot and made me realise that it’s all about believing in myself. We wish the 21-year-old a successful reign as Miss Universe. By: N. Lothungbeni Humtsoe

Five Biggest Money Mistakes at the Beginning of the Year Financial disasters - we all have made them, which resulted in some regret. The beginning of the year usually represents, for many of us, a time of resolution, new goals, or the “New Year, New You” mentality. To make this a year of financial success, it will take some planning and a shift in how you think about money. In this article, we identify the five biggest money mistakes people make during this time of the year and what you can do to avoid these pitfalls!

“What can I buy”? This is where the journey of living a more expensive lifestyle also known as “Lifestyle Creep” begins.

ummer Watson, MHS, PhD and Jen Fontanilla, Certified Money Coach (CMC) from a live show “The Life, Love and Money Show with Summer and Jen” shares five practical steps that will help you avert money mistakes and support your financial success!

No emergency fund

S

Stay away from “Lifestyle Creep” Many of us have done it - we get a raise and we make a little more money, but rather than trying to figure out how to pay down debt or how much more we can save and put away, we think about

16

JANUARY 2022

Take that extra money and prioritize your goals. Do you need to pay off some consumer debt? Are you putting away money for retirement? Do you have a healthy balance in your emergency fund? It may be tempting to tell yourself, “Well, I deserve this. I earned it. I can afford this now.” Celebrate your milestones, but don’t forget to make a money plan and prioritize your financial goals. A big lesson that the pandemic has taught us is how important it is to have an emergency fund. Here’s where you take your extra money and work towards building funds that will sustain six months or more of expenses. When you don’t set cash aside, it will force you to find other expensive ways to sustain your lifestyle. This could lead to putting simple purchases on credit cards or taking out cash advances at high-interest rates. And, if you don’t have a great credit

score, this could cost you even more! Consider taking any bonuses, tax refunds, or any money that is left over from your budget and put it into an emergency fund. Paying the wrong debt first With debt being one of the most stressful financial problems that people have, sometimes we don’t know what we should pay off first. Are you aggressively trying to pay off your home and putting extra money towards your mortgage? Typically, a mortgage has a lower interest rate. However, you might first consider tackling consumer credit cards, which generally have a higher interest rate. Be strategic about the debt you are trying to pay off. By getting rid of your debt, it will improve your credit score and free up money, which will allow you to put more money towards your other financial goals, such as savings and investments. Not monitoring your credit

Sign up for a free credit monitoring service that alerts you of potential danger. Not paying attention to what is going on with your credit can wreak havoc on your financial situation. Plus, the time it takes to clean it up would be a major time suck. Protect your identity and assets and don’t put yourself in a position of trying to clean the mess up after it’s too late. Not having insurance Insurance is one of those things that we don’t like to think about or pay for, but when we use it, we sure are happy it was in place! Not having insurance can be extremely costly. If you already have insurance for your auto or home, take some time to review your policy with your agent to make sure you have the right amount of coverage. Even more critical, do you have life insurance? This is the foundation of any solid financial plan. Without it, people experience extreme financial hardship. Be wise and protect your loved ones by putting a plan in place and preparing for the unexpected. By N. Lothungbeni Humtsoe

Hair styling trends 2022 W being inspired by the beauty of culture and tradition as well.

hen I’m asked about seasonal trends, perhaps it’s wishful thinking on my part, but I’ve been saying for years that people need to embrace what is naturally their own.

I believe a return to the natural, in terms of texture and hair styles, sort of mirrors what is happening in fashion right now as well. People no longer wear uniforms, which is the same type of clothing defined by a trend. Of course, there are followers and there are, sort of, leaders, but within that, there is a significant enough proportion that seems to have broken out of the pattern of seasonal trends to have an impact on fashion with different choices. Younger people in the West, for instance, look to singer Billie Eilish, who dyed her hair a bright, almost phosphorescent green, as somebody who is a trend-setter. Rihanna, the singer and beauty mogul, is known for creating trends with her fiercely individual style. She often catches a trend far ahead of the changes in fashion’s seasonal cycles, and makes it her own. Short hair, bright colours, braids, accessories, wraps, and even her current cut are very now. Inspired by the infamous Mullet as a nineties staple, Rihanna understands the assignment. She’s playful and experimental with her many iconic looks. The 90’s are definitely a strong influence on shaping and leading fashion everywhere right now. Accessories like snap clips, bobby pins, and barrettes in pop-art colours are great too and are fun additions for styling. These are some of the trending looks in fashion, hair, and make-up on the international runways and editorials. In India, long hair is part of our culture, so I feel like cutting the long hair off symbolises a kind of freedom in a way. Yet I still believe that if long hair is beautiful and in great condition, then that has its own charm. People have progressed to, at least, experimenting with hair colour and with a slightly shorter overall length of hair. Thirty years ago, I would go to a party and I was always the only one with a short haircut. I’ve grown my hair out to a mid-length, and when I go out now, I see a lot of people with a similar length of hair. I feel hair styles are not so www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

definitive anymore. Its statementmaking colours, rather than definitive styles, are trending. Red is a popular colour this winter, or even a violet blue for our more adventurous clients. Hair colour is a great way to experience the same kind of significant, personal transformation as you would with a new cut or style.

As people embrace their natural texture, it means fewer products in their hair. One must also use a heat protection spray that protects as you style with heated tools. For some people, it’s no longer so much about trends. People are working more with their emotions in the choices they make for their looks. Everybody is really trying to do the best they can to work towards a balance in what they wear, in their hair, on their body, in their clothes, working more with their emotions and how they feel about the choices they make. Even in the beauty regimen, the move towards natural ingredients and recognising the benefits of those ingredients I do believe that even if there is a trend that has been created around getting closer to nature and being more in harmony with

nature, it is only good that people are thinking in that direction. Then their actions are also moving in that direction all around them, whether they’re doing it because it’s a fashion trend or whether they actually believe in it. It’s a good change regardless. Is it a “trend” or is it a “demand”? That might be the question to ask. That we are delving into other considerations and deeper conversations in the fashion and beauty space goes with the larger, worldwide trend of people being forced to think more deeply about their choices. Fashion is a thought process in which we express ourselves and our personalities because the consequences and repercussions of our choices are what we are experiencing in our world and in our time. With the winter upon us, festival season, and our great, big, Indian weddings. For a bridal look, I would work with natural texture and more realistic hair, taking weather, comfort and context as considerations, over a contrived or highmaintenance style. Women want to feel special as the bride, as they should, and for me what factors to decide on a look is a blend of personal taste, suitability, character and preferences of the bride, and most importantly how she sees herself. A great cut, colour or style can bring a beautiful balance between the aesthetic of the bride’s bone structure, face shape, body proportions, costume and colours she will be wearing; it’s the same ideating we would go through during a consultancy for a haircut. Bridal hair, and haircuts and styles overall, can be freer, more comfortable, modern and subtly chic, while JANUARY 2022

Fun Facts on Daily Dog Behavior

Continued from previous edition:

n our last two articles, we have started a series explaining peculiar behaviors that you may have seen in your furry companion. In this month’s article, we continue to explain more fun facts of actions that your dog might display. As owners, we may find these to be odd, but in reality, they are not that unusual at all! Dogs eating grass! You may have commonly noticed your dog chewing at some grass in the yard during his washroom breaks. As worrisome as this action may seem, it is in fact very natural for them! This instinct, arguably, can even be traced back to their ancestral roots from wolves. Wolves are known to eat grass as part of their herbivorous diet. As humans, we tend to eat probiotics after an uncomfortable meal. Similarly, wolves and dogs do the same! Dogs will naturally feel inclined to chew on grass if they feel the need to clear their digestive system of any unsettling food, foreign bodies or parasites. The high fiber content of the grass allows for the lining of their stomachs and intestines to cleanse of the unwanted materials. However, despite this natural inclination, some dogs simply prefer to eat grass for the taste! They enjoy the fiber content immensely to the point that some cannot contain themselves and end up eating too much. Too much of anything is bad. In these cases, sometimes surgery is the only method to help relieve them of this medical problem. Grass blades can be very sharp and such can also cause injury or tear inside the lining of the digestive tract’s organs. Thus, enabling more reasons for surgery. Certain cases of excessive grass eating can also be due to a nutrient deficiency in your dog; however, these situations are very rare due to the high balanced quality pet food that is now available in market. Another very common habit seen in dogs of all ages is the act of them eating their own feces, also known scientifically as ‘coprophagia’. One of the most general reasons for why dogs enjoy doing this is because they simply like the taste of feces! Not only can they be seen eating their own feces or other dogs’ excrements, but they also may enjoy eating the waste of other animals,

24

JANUARY 2022

such as horses or cats. The taste is considered sweet and is full of many rich nutrients. If your female dog is nursing, you may see her eating the feces of her young to keep her space and den clean. Despite this being seen as a normal act for most, it can however signify a problem existing as well. Your dog may be trying to get your attention by doing this action. They may be waiting for their owner to say: ‘drop it’, ‘leave it’ or ‘stop’, as one would in a childish game. If your dog is experiencing other symptoms that are abnormal and unusual in nature, along with coprophagia, then this can be seen as a symptom added to the list! In these cases, it is highly recommended to see your local veterinarian as soon as possible. Your veterinarian may wish to perform some diagnostic tests in this case to determine a cause for this problem. The third reason for this being abnormal would be anxiety. When a dog is stressed out or feeling anxious, it may find comfort in eating its own feces as a treat to feel better.

While Covid-19 is still in the rearview mirror, an unwavering sense of optimism for the future of travel is taking its place. Booking.com commissioned a thorough research with more than 24,000 travellers across 31 countries and territories 1, including India, to predict how travel would continue to be redefined in 2022, combining it with its own data and insights as a digital travel leader for the past 25 years.

A

ccording to its ‘Travel Predictions 2022 Research,’ 2022 will be the year to capitalise on uncertainty and begin making up for lost vacation time in a big manner, with the percentage of travellers who believe they need to do so increasing 52 per cent year over year*. The forecasts illustrate how individuals will rekindle their passion for travel in the coming year. It’s all about seizing the day in 2022 and making every journey meaningful, whether it’s as part of a self-care routine or the excitement

7 travel pred of just saying yes to whatever travel possibilities and experiences come their way. 1. Vitamin Vacay: Travel will become an essential part of self-care Getting away on vacation, more than daily exercise or mindful meditation, will become the form of self-care in 2022, with over 84 per cent of Indian travellers stating that travel enhances their mental and emotional wellbeing more than other types of rest and relaxation. After more than a year of ever-changing travel restrictions, the significant health and wellness advantages of travel are now being recognised. According to the study, 85 per cent of Indian travellers believe that having a holiday planned improves their mental well-being, and 69 per cent of Indian travellers said they didn’t know how important travel was to their well-being until it was no longer a possibility. 2. Resetting the Out Of (Home) Office: Vacation time will be strictly work free When the epidemic struck, houses all over the world became our offices, and the novelty of working from home became apparent. However, in 2022, we’ll see a significant increase in people wanting to reclaim control in order to firmly re-establish a healthy work-life balance, as 77 per cent of Indian travellers’ vacation time will be strictly work-free, which wasn’t always the case in 2021, when home and remote work lives were blurred. We expect to see more people setting their well-deserved out of (home) office messages in 2022, with 76 per cent of Indian travellers claiming to have worked more hours and used fewer vacation days during the pandemic. 3. All the First-Time Feels: The anticipation of the journey will be as exciting as the

destination While many of us may have forgotten where we left our passports or even how to pack, in 2022, all of our out-of-practice travel awkwardness will give way to true delight in even the most mundane aspects of our visits. Rather of racing through the voyage after feeling’stuck’ for so long, travellers will be savouring every moment. The majority of Indian travellers report that simple joys like feeling the sun on their skin (75 per cent) or seeing a body of water of some kind instantly changes their mood for the better, so each of our ‘first’ visits in 2022 will be a moment to relish (84 per cent). Even the uncertainty of navigating public transit in a new city in a foreign language is something that 75 per cent of Indian travellers say they will appreciate, and 84 per cent think

that travel is more pleasurable when the journey feels like part of the trip itself. Recapturing that firsttime feeling and leaning in to every single moment will be a trademark of journeys in 2022 after such a long period of limited possibilities. 4. Community First: Authentic connection with the local community will be priority Because movement was slowed in many parts of the world due to limitations, the epidemic encouraged us to make the most of what was there in front of us. For many of us, the epidemic meant spending an extended length of time with our closest friends and family, but vacations in 2022 will provide an opportunity to spread out and develop new connections. We expect to see travellers using their vacations to expand their usual social circles, as 81 per cent of Indian travellers want to meet new people while away. Holiday romances are expected to resurface, with 77 per cent of those looking for one on their next vacation. 6. Just Say Yes: People will be saying YES to travel, making up for the lost

After hearing “no” for so long, travellers are recovering a more optimistic outlook for 2022. The finest of improvisation will be brought to travel in the next year, with us reacting with an emphatic “yes, and...” to each unexpected twist and turn in the journey. To that end, roughly 83 per cent of Indian travellers agree that if their budget allows, they will say yes to every vacation option. 79 per cent of Indian travellers are more open to other types of vacations than they were before the pandemic, and 65 per cent don’t care where they go on holiday as long as it’s the type of vacation they want; they’re simply pleased to be away from home. Adopting a positive mindset will allow travellers to see more of the world than ever before, with many taking a more adventurous approach to their vacation plans, and perhaps even their travel companions. 7. Embracing the Unpredictable: People will use technology to embrace travels continued unpredictability In 2022, uncertainty will be a constant in travel, and while we won’t be able to control or forecast

every new surprise and challenge that fate has in store for us, we will welcome it. Over the last year and a half, we’ve relied on technology in a number of ways to stay connected and inspired, and our favourite applications will continue to aid us in navigating the unknown on our travels, with 76 per cent of Indian travellers believing that technology helps ease travel anxiety. With growing refinement and proactivity, technology will continue to smooth out the unexpected bumps on the path. Ritu Mehrotra, Regional Manager, South Asia at Booking.com, said, “As we look towards the year ahead, we’re seeing a lot of anticipation for Indian travellers to return to travel. Whether it’s domestically or abroad, or just saying yes to whatever travel opportunity comes their way, it’s our mission to make it easier for everyone to explore again when the time is right. We will be there for travellers, offering the widest choice, great value, and the easiest experience from anywhere and on any device, so people can reclaim their travel mojo and enjoy all of the unforgettable experiences this world has to offer, when it’s safe to do so again.” By: IANSlife

Talking to IANS about working with Abhay, Karan said, “I live in a family full of legendary actors so I obviously learn from them, with my ‘chacha’ (uncle) there is a level of comfort and ease when he plays as an actor and with that he is a director so I earn quite a bit.”

This festival also marks the harvesting time of rabi crops, that is, the crops of the winter season. The people of Punjab, the most fertile belt of India, celebrate the harvesting of sugar cane thorough this festival. Sesame seeds, jaggery, radish, mustard and spinach are also harvested, and they are the primary attractions of the festivity. People make sweets called revari and gajak, and staples such as Sarso ka Saag with Makki ki roti. Radish is one of the attractions of the feast and is also included in it. There are various customs and traditions associated with the festival of Lohri. A few days before the onset of the festival, children and the girls of the house go from door to door asking for Lohri items such as sweets, sugar, sesame seeds, jaggery and cow dung cakes.

She knew nothing about Baljit before that.”, I replied. Meenu held her head in shock and began contemplating the situation. “Didi, you put your life on stake to bring me and all of us to Canada. You are a goddess of love. I never knew you love us so much. I bow before you. You are out of this world, didi. “Swear by me that you won’t do anything like this. What will everyone think? I’m fine with whatever god has given me. All of you love Nancy so much. Sometimes, my mind wanders with such meaningless thoughts. Come on, it’s going to be dinner time for all. Let’s prepare dinner.”, I said and both of us went to the kitchen leaving Nancy and Vismad playing together in the family room.

“So, what are you thinking now, didi?”, Meenu asked. “What can I think? All my charms have been ruined completely. Mom left all of us. Baljit isn’t mine despite being mine. I have no ambition to live with. I feel pity on Nancy when I think about her future. What’s her fault? She is not getting her father’s love despite it being there.”, I said.

Lily Collins talks about what makes ‘Emily In Paris’ so popular

ctress Lily Collins, who reprises the role of Emily Cooper for the second series of the Netflix show ‘Emily In Paris’, has opened up the growing popularity of the comedy drama series. The actress says it is because of the emotions of fun, laughter and humour that helped the show connect with the audiences during the pandemic last year. Lily joined a select roundtable with journalists, including an IANS representative, to talk about the series.

“I think humour, laughter, smiling and anything that is fun is universal. You don’t have to understand the language to know when something feels bright, funny and bold,” Lily told IANS. She added: “I think humour translates to any language and something that offers a sense of escapism especially at a time during the first

season that the pandemic came out.” The actress says it is the feeling of being able to experience new things that comes with the series. “We are still finding ourselves in the middle of the pandemic and some of us are more isolated. We weren’t able to go to Paris… We are back in LA… In order to feel that you are able to feel like you are able to travel and experience new things and have a sense of fun and familiarity that comes with the series.” She added: “And it is a mixture of when it comes out with what the show represents that offers that and I think people were craving that they didn’t know that it can be quite therapeutic because it expresses emotions like laughter, fun and smile things you need during a dark time.” Source: IANS

magine surviving deadly riots and migrating to a progressive country for a better life. Now imagine starting from zero and applying to numerous jobs only being turned down simply because you look different from others. Now visualize yourself being called a “towel head” because of your turban. Pause, and think for a second, how it must feel coming to a new country of your dreams with fifty dollars in your pocket and not being able to find a suitable job because of blatant racism. Let’s fast forward a few years and picture going through all these challenges yet still making it big.

How Nav Bhatia, the Superfan, changed my perspective on life believed in countering negativity with a harsh response, but Nav’s message, “When they go low, you go high,” resonated with me. This powerful line means if someone wants to disrespect you, find a way to respectfully find a solution instead of stooping down to their level. Nav believes in educating others about his faith rather than engaging in negative social media interactions with those who pass racist remarks.

Nav is not just a Superfan anymore; he symbolizes determination, perseverance, and love. The ring that was such an attraction for me also represents an immigrant success story. When asked about the ring, Nav said, “It’s not about the expensive diamonds or the wow factor; it’s my life’s work symbolized in this ring.”

This is the story of an immigrant who broke barriers and made it to the top despite all the past traumas. This is the success story of Nav Bhatia, who we all know as “Superfan.” Before meeting Nav Bhatia in person, I knew him as the “Super Fan” for the Toronto Raptors and the only non-NBA player to receive the expensive NBA championship ring with 640 diamonds. When Rinku Ghei invited me to attend an invite-only movie premiere showcasing Nav Bhatia’s journey, I was beyond ecstatic. I was super excited to meet the most recognized non-player at any Raptors game. Many community leaders attended this Red-Carpet movie premiere. Many thoughts crossed my mind while eagerly awaiting Nav Bhatia’s arrival. I wondered how Nav would be as a person. After all, fame does change people. Nav arrived on time, and we all walked to take our seats to watch his life journey through his documentary “The Superfan.” From the very first scene to the last, it was a rollercoaster ride of emotions. I learnt so much from this documentary. It empowered me to do more as a youth. The message in this documentary

Nav is so humble that he let thousands of fans wear and take photos with the NBA Championship ring. He wants every young mind to know that no dream is too big to achieve. He also says that this ring belongs to the fans, not just him.

taught me that no matter how many obstacles may come in your way, one must not give up. Nav Bhatia moved to Toronto, Canada, amid the anti-Sikh riots in India as he searched for a better life and a safe future for his family. With only a few dollars to his name and an engineering degree on his resume, Nav struggled to find a job because of his “long beard and turban.” Many people told him to cut his hair to blend in with this new environment as that would

increase his chances of getting a job. But Nav wasn’t willing to give up on his faith in exchange of an easy journey. He had promised his mother that he would never drink or smoke, and he would always keep his turban. Due to his determined and warrior mindset, Nav quickly climbed the ladder of success. His journey is truly inspirational. Nav had started his first job as a car salesman and quickly set a record of selling 197 cars in his first 90 days of getting hired. A record that still holds to this day. Nav eventually bought the two car dealerships he worked at previously. After the documentary ended, Nav addressed the attendees and gripped everyone with his “straight from the heart“ talk. He shared numerous real-life experiences of facing racism but always kept his head high. The beauty of his message is that everyone can relate to it. He has a certain charisma that makes him a likeable personality. He changed my perspective on many things that day. I always

38

JANUARY 2022

Overall, it was an amazing experience to meet Nav Bhatia in person, and what surprised me the most was that despite his huge success and following, he is as humble as you can imagine. He didn’t let the success change him. As they say, “nothing fails like success if you forget who you are.” Through his Superfan Foundation, Nav is heavily involved in running charity programs in India and worldwide. Nav Bhatia represents much more than basketball. He represents faith, diversity, and inclusion. Mr. Bhatia has helped countless people irrespective of their cultural background and made his vision to bring communities together through basketball. It’s not about the money, the nice house, or the fancy NBA and Hall of Fame ring he owns. It’s about learning and understanding what he preaches and the morals he lives by every day. Nav Bhatia is truly a remarkable man we can all learn from. I hope every young kid watches the “Superfan – The Nav Bhatia Story” documentary made by Rinku Ghei of Yellow Mango Films. www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

A luxurious house makeover might seem to be an expensive and overwhelming task but it isn’t. In winter, when hibernating homes battle to remain awake, a need to provide style and statement - a vivacious home renovation is suddenly felt. In the midst of the relaxed seasonal mood, winter homes need to find a balance between relaxation and rejuvenation, all wrapped in a swirl of unique decor ideas. Interior Designer Punam Kalra, Creative Director of I’m the Centre For Applied Arts shows you how:

5 ways to brighten up your home in Winter

Rich Colour Palettes

the relaxing atmosphere.

The warmer tones of the season’s colours counteract the season’s cold breeze. Summer memories are evoked by vibrant, richer hues with a reflected face-a fresh tint of tangerine, a deep sheen of coral, or a more neutral-sided shade of mustard. These hues can be used as solid paints or textured wallpapers on the walls, in unique abstract designs, sensuous art, or natural stone grains, with a slight metallic accent to bring a dramatic twist to

Plush Furnishings Warm upholstery-velvet, fur, suede, and other luxurious fabricwas used to combat the cold in earlier framed pieces. Wrap everything up, from huge pieces like sofas and recliners to small pairings like ottomans, pouffes, and coffee tables. Overshadow the backdated diamond tufts with blind and channel tufts for a modest yet whimsical effect in the overall interior design. Non-chalant Moodboards Every place needs a chance to appreciate the season’s real personality. This is why extra throw pillows and blankets can be brought in, with an overabundance of patterns and textures-modest plaids, checks, and other patterns mixed with dense textures and bold-neutral colour duos to evoke winter symbolism. You may unashamedly enjoy the winter scene by laying an oriental carpet, an abstract rug, or a solid dhurrie near your tea tables, along the fire place, or on your couches. Extroverted Ambience Winter’s compulsion to obsess about light is palpable. Remove the window screens to make room for sunbathing areas. Sheer curtains in private spaces and attractive valances in living and other

communal areas can help to break up the monotony of the inside. Set up a window view with a coffee table, a wingback chair, and a homemade fur rug to look out the window at the grey outdoors and bask in the season’s vibe. Warm Details Wood, candles, fireplaces, open BBQs, and other warmer matters come to mind at this time of year. In furnishing, decorating, and even re-decorating, the season honours these components of thermal comfort. Vintage candles, with or without scent, can be placed in an antique candle stand, or warm lighting can be added with vintage chandeliers or rustic pendants that complement the natural goldenyellow glow. Distressed wood can be used as sidetables, shelves, wall hangings, personalised showpieces, and more. You can replicate the summery vibe with artisanal flower vases, fresh indoor houseplants, cosy pottery, earthen tableware, and more, in addition to the usual, demode statements. In addition, fireplaces exemplify flair and sophistication, and they now serve as a fashion statement. Electric and ethanol fireplaces have taken over the residential scene thanks to their hassle-free operation and aesthetic appeal. By:IANSlife

All you need to know about iron deficiency anaemia Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji

I

MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC

ron deficiency anemia is a common type of anemia — a condition in which blood lacks adequate healthy red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen to the body’s tissues. As the name implies, iron deficiency anemia is due to insufficient iron. Without enough iron, your body can’t produce enough of a substance in red blood cells that enables them to carry oxygen (hemoglobin). As a result, iron deficiency anemia may leave you tired and short of breath. Symptoms Initially, iron deficiency anemia can be so mild that it goes unnoticed. But as the body becomes more deficient in iron and anemia worsens, the signs and symptoms intensify. Iron deficiency anemia signs and symptoms may include: 4 Extreme fatigue 4 Weakness 4 Pale skin 4 Chest pain, fast heartbeat or shortness of breath 4 Headache, dizziness or lightheadedness 4 Cold hands and feet 4 Inflammation or soreness of your tongue 4 Brittle nails 4 Unusual cravings for nonnutritive substances, such as ice, dirt or starch 4 Poor appetite, especially in infants and children with iron deficiency anemia Causes Iron deficiency anemia occurs when your body doesn’t have enough iron to produce hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the part of red blood cells that gives blood its red color and enables the red blood cells to carry oxygenated blood throughout your body.

4 Blood loss. Blood contains iron within red blood cells. So if you lose blood, you lose some iron. Women with heavy periods are at risk of iron deficiency anemia because they lose blood during menstruation. Slow, chronic blood loss within the body — such as from a peptic ulcer, a hiatal hernia, a colon polyp or colorectal cancer — can cause iron deficiency anemia. Gastrointestinal bleeding can result from regular use of some over-the-counter pain relievers, especially aspirin. 4 A lack of iron in your diet. Your body regularly gets iron from the foods you eat. If you consume too little iron, over time your body can become iron deficient. Examples of iron-rich foods include meat, eggs, leafy green vegetables and iron-fortified foods. For proper growth and development, infants and children need iron from their diets, too.

If you aren’t consuming enough iron, or if you’re losing too much iron, your body can’t produce enough hemoglobin, and iron deficiency anemia will eventually develop.

4 An inability to absorb iron. Iron from food is absorbed into your bloodstream in your small intestine. An intestinal disorder, such as celiac disease, which affects your intestine’s ability to absorb nutrients from digested food, can lead to iron deficiency anemia. If part of your small intestine has been bypassed or removed surgically, that may affect your ability to absorb iron and other nutrients.

Causes of iron deficiency anemia include:

4 Pregnancy. Without iron supplementation, iron deficiency

anemia occurs in many pregnant women because their iron stores need to serve their own increased blood volume as well as be a source of hemoglobin for the growing fetus Risk factors These groups of people may have an increased risk of iron deficiency anemia: 4 Women. Because women lose blood during menstruation, women in general are at greater risk of iron deficiency anemia. 4 Infants and children. Infants, especially those who were low birth weight or born prematurely, who don’t get enough iron from breast milk or formula may be at risk of iron deficiency. Children need extra iron during growth spurts. If your child isn’t eating a healthy, varied diet, he or she may be at risk of anemia. 4 Vege tarians. People who don’t eat meat may have a greater risk of iron deficiency anemia if they don’t eat other iron-rich foods. 4 Frequent blood donors. People who routinely donate blood may have an increased risk of iron deficiency anemia since blood donation can deplete iron stores. Low hemoglobin related to blood donation may be a temporary problem remedied by eating more

iron-rich foods. If you’re told that you can’t donate blood because of low hemoglobin, ask your doctor whether you should be concerned. Complications Mild iron deficiency anemia usually doesn’t cause complications. However, left untreated, iron deficiency anemia can become severe and lead to health problems, including the following: 4 Heart problems. Iron deficiency anemia may lead to a rapid or irregular heartbeat. Your heart must pump more blood to compensate for the lack of oxygen carried in your blood when you’re anemic. This can lead to an enlarged heart or heart failure. 4 Problems during pregnancy. In pregnant women, severe iron deficiency anemia has been linked to premature births and low birth weight babies. But the condition is preventable in pregnant women who receive iron supplements as part of their prenatal care. 4 Growth problems. In infants and children, severe iron deficiency can lead to anemia as well as delayed growth and development. Additionally, iron deficiency anemia is associated with an increased susceptibility to infections. Cont. in next edition www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

‘Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui’:

Crackling chemistry in this rom-com with a twist Reviewed by: Troy Ribeiro Duration: 116 minutes. Director: Abhishek Kapoor Cast: Ayushmann Khurrana, Vaani Kapoor, Abhishek Bajaj, Kanwaljit Singh, Gourav Sharma, Gautam Sharma and Yograj Singh.

G

Rating: *** (three stars)

arbed in gloss and glamour, ‘Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui’ is a well-meaning film with good intentions at its core, but somewhere along the line, the message gets lost, and the film fails to make an impact. Manvinder Munjal aka Manu (Ayushmann Khurrana) is a typical Punjabi lad from a middle-class business family in Chandigarh. He is a body-builder and gym trainer. Manu’s entire life revolves around bodybuilding, his aim being to win the ‘Best Gabru of Chandigarh’ title, which has forever been eluding him, making him play second fiddle to Sandy, owner of another gym. His family does not support him and his goals and keeps pressuring him to get married.

Other actors, including Kanwaljit Singh, who plays Maanvi’s father, and Anjan Shrivastav as Manu’s grandfather, are wasted and fail to wow you with their performances. Manu’s loud and boisterous sisters overact and are anything but humorous.

Maanvi (Vaani Kapoor), a stunning-to-look-at instructor, joins his gym to take Zumba classes, and the inevitable happens. The physical attraction between the two is strong, and soon, the duo gets comfortable with each other.

Created on a rom-com template, the film entertains in parts. The first half fails to engage you as you wait for that big moment, which arrives a tad too late and is a bit of a damp squib. The sensitive message, which the film strives to convey, is not handled as well as it could have been. By the end, it almost feels as if with all the boxes having been ticked by the director, he is in a hurry to wrap up the film with an ‘all’s well that ends well’ stamp.

As their relationship progresses, Maanvi drops a bombshell and is accused of deceit and concealing facts. An enraged Manu breaks up with her. How he overcomes the social barriers ingrained in his psyche and allows his love for her to take over, and motivated by her, wins the coveted title, forms the crux of the film. On the performance front, while Ayushmann Khurrana looks every inch the ‘gabru’ lad from Chandigarh, with ‘dollesholle’, et al, a coterie of friends in tow always driving around in an open jeep, somewhere, he lacks conviction and merely walks through his role. Except in the competition and gym scenes, where he gets to show off his well-sculpted body, he is a tad disappointing.

JANUARY 2022

The dialogues are replete with the local Punjabi flavour and even crass in parts. The music is nothing to write home about, and it is only ‘Mainu maafi de de maafi’ that is well-picturised and melodious. The film boasts of good production values, and Chandigarh at various times of the day or night is captured with honesty. Vaani Kapoor’s Maanvi grows on you as her inner turmoil and past

are revealed, and the audience connects with her pain.

Overall, the ‘aashqui’ flavour in ‘Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui’ dominates, and the message takes a backseat, almost getting lost. www.entertainmentmagazine.ca
