Why It Is Important And How It Evolves Over Years

Mother-child Relationship: one, be vulnerable, and say what’s truly on their minds. Such boys grow up to be emotionally strong, and capable of loving people.

Doesn’t fall prey to male stereotypes When raised by their mothers, boys don’t easily believe in the male stereotypes of being tough and having to prove their masculinity. These boys are quite confident in being who they are.

s you grow older, your relationship with your parents changes dramatically. It’s a change that’s painful and wonderful at the same time. A mother-child relationship is even more special and complicated because no one understands their child better than mothers do. Mothers play a huge role in how their childs behave and deal with their emotions. A boy raised well by a mother will exhibit the following traits:

Emotionally strong and independent Boys who share a healthy relationship with their mothers ever since they were children grow up to be emotionally intelligent. Through their mothers, these boys learn how to love, cherish, and accept someone unconditionally. The mothers become their confidante and they learn how to trust some-

Respects women Boys raised by their mothers also learn to love, respect and appreciate their mothers as well as other women in general as they don’t have any superiority issues with their female counterparts.

How does a mother-child relationship evolve over the years? The mother is the first perchild with whom a child establishes his first physical and emotional relationship. Here’s how this relationship evolves over the years:

As a child, the child depends on his mother for all his needs As a baby, the child picks up his first emotions from the mother. As he grows up, he depends on his mother for all his needs. When the mother shows love and care, the

child feels safer and learns to trust people and begins shaping his emotional strengths and behaviours.

As a teenager, he is discovering his perchildality and identity Teenage is a tough time as the child is going through physical and emotional changes. He’s also slowly discovering his character, perchildality, and identity. It’s a time when a child needs someone to talk to, guide him, and show him how to make choices. However, it’s also a time he wishes to be treated as an adult and as such, involving him in family discussions and decisions makes him feel more accepted, appreciated and respected.

As an adult, he is trying to build his own world As an adult, the child is busy chasing his passions and dreams and building his career. He needs his mother to counsel him not just on career choices, but also on relationships. At this stage, he’s looking for realistic and practical advice from his mother. The behaviour of the child at every stage of his life somehow reflects the nurturing he received and the emotions he picked up from his mother. That’s why it’s important for mothers to love and support their childs and adapt it as the children grow.

ONE GIFT CAN CHANGE YOUR FAMILY’S LIFE Sandeep Ahuja

F

estival season is in full swing and to celebrate that, we are buying expensive gifts for our loved ones. While we are leaving no stone unturned to enjoy the lovely season and are spending tons of money for the happiness of our near and dear ones, I would like to put a question before you: Have you protected your family’s future by gifting them with a life insurance policy? A recent experience led me to share my thoughts with you. A client’s brother-in-law who was truck driver in America died at the age of 45. He left his young wife with three young children- a baby girl (10 yrs), 2 twins (aged 4 yrs) along with a paralysed mother and a sick father. What is actually worse is that when I asked my client whether the deceased had any insurance coverage, he told that his brother-in-law had not left even a single penny of insurance coverage to pay for the liabilities which include the home mortgage of $700,000 -800,000 besides the expenses needed to take care of her young children and sick parents. His spouse is unable to answer any of the multiple unresolved questions/ responsibilities that she has been left with. Should she go on welfare? Or should she sell her home and go to a basement??? He has left her with a financial question that she is completely unable to answer. It’s like sitting in an exam that is God’s will (is bound to happen), where you are made to solve a question that has been written in a language that you don’t understand. If you are not aware about the very first step in the resolution of the problem, how will you resolve the whole problem! Can any reader come forward and help the surviving spouse overcome this extreme financial crisis that she is facing presently? She is unable to figure out whether she should look after her kids, should look after the disabled parents or, should look for a job. Not only this, she is deeply perturbed by the fear of losing even the roof on her head. Only if he had timely purchased life insurance, the death benefit would have replaced his income and would have helped his spouse meet many important financial needs like funeral costs, daily living expenses, medical expenses of aged parents, educational funding of his children, their marriage in future and especially, monthly mortgages. We give expensive gifts to our children, live in expensive houses, drive luxury cars and most of us have insurance protection in place. But, some people don’t have any insurance protection. Have they ever given a second thought to safeguard the future of their loved ones in case they cease to exist! We don’t wish ill

for anybody; everybody should live a happy long life. But if for instance a truck driver/ construction worker/professional earning $6000-$7000 a month cannot invest say, $50-$100 per month to secure the future of his family, he is putting his family’s security at stake. Don’t leave your spouse with a financial question that she is unable to answer. Life insurance is an extremely valuable gift that can save your family from undue financial stress in case you are not there to cater to their financial needs. Nobody can replace the vacuum created by your absence, but, you can at least save your family from the financial hardships that will otherwise leave them with poor conditions of survival. When we are aware of the significance of life insurance, should it not be on top of our priority list? Don’t we people trust our spouse enough to discuss life insurance with him/ her? Not only for married people, life insurance is equally important for people of different ages and marital status. While for married couples, life insurance can prove a valuable tool for surviving spouse’s financial needs such as home loans, car loans and credit card balance; for parents with kids, it can additionally cover the educational funding needs of their children. Further, it is even more beneficial for single parent who is solely entrusted with all above mentioned financial liabilities/responsibilities. It’s extremely important to safeguard his/her children’s financial future. For retired people, the heirs could be saved from tax consequences applicable to estate, funeral expenses and other debts which could be paid off easily from the tax-free death benefit. This need doesn’t exclude people who are ‘single’ since many times, they have to take care of aged parents or a sibling with special needs. They may even be carrying debts which they don’t want to pass over to their parents. Life insurance can very securely cater to the financial needs of the surviving parents/sibling. Some people say that they don’t believe in insurance. I always advise that life insurance is not a religion to be believed; it is a tool which will pass over the

www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

risk of untimely death to insurance company in case you die. While it will be extremely difficult for the surviving family to bear the financial burden of different liabilities, by merely paying a small premium to the insurance company, that risk will be

/saentertainmentmagazine

@ansalmedia

undertaken by the company which has a much strong financial base and thus can easily pay out the death benefit amount to the beneficiary for his financial concerns. Finally, we do realize that life insurance is an extremely valuable financial resource

@sa entertainment

which can cater to the needs of our loved ones in case we are not there to take care of them. We should never neglect purchasing life insurance and should definitely purchase it- even for a low amount, if we are able to pay only little premium. This would eventually provide our family a secure financial shelter in their times of need. As an independent insurance advisor working through Punjab Insurance Agency, I deal with different insurance companies offering plans for different types of insurance. I can explain to you in detail, the insurance plan options and coverage that are suitable for your needs and resources. Besides, I can also help you to purchase mortgage insurance, super visa insurance, disability insurance, critical illness insurance, extended medical plans, group medical plans, RESP, RRSP, travel insurance, TFSA accounts, health and dental plans along with estate planning suitable for your needs and resources. For a no obligation appointment, please contact me.

Why do we celebrate NEW YEAR every year? Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Health Coach of University of Victoria

Cont. from last edition part 3 The ever-moving hands of the clock have brought us to the close of another year and welcome the New Year 2019. Another year means a new beginning for all of us. This is a perfect time to take stock of the situation. Reminisce the recent past spanning over 12 months and make corrections where ever warranted and get ready for another annual take off. New Year brings new hopes and action plans to each and every one of us. Most of us usually start our year by wishing our family and friends a Very Happy New Year. This is a great opportunity to encourage and to motivate our loved ones to start the New Year rightfully. Learn to be more thankful this year: Remember that New Year is a reminder of how God loves us so much. Let us thank God for all the blessings and for all the things that He has done for us. Also, pray for guidance and protection for the whole year- for all of us. Shun negative thoughts: Throw away negative thoughts and welcome the year 2019 with positive mind. Learn to be more happy and contented. I wish you all the best in the world and a wonderful new year ahead. As this year is ending, I wish all the negativity and difficulties also end with this year and 2019 bring success and desired results for you. Take New Year as a reminder: Every new year is a reminder that there is always hope and good future ahead of us. It is never too late to become the person you always wanted to be. Aim high and hope for the best. Let God and your well wishers always lend a helping hand for enduring success. Focus on the present: Learn to focus on how to make things better this year. Don’t let your past failure[s] define who you are today? Start this year with a cheerful heart and make every moment count. Time to forgive others: This year, let us decide to let go of the

As a new bloom spreads fragrance and freshness around, may the New Year add a new beauty and freshness into your life. Happy New Year.

JANUARY 2019

We love New Year because it is the time of the year that brings reunion and get together. I hope you and your family are as happy as we all are today. things that hurts us and forgive those who caused us pain. Also let us say sorry to all those who are hurt due to our unmerited behaviour- in patches- on sidelines.I will try to live this year with no hate in my heart. I will also pray for those who have a hard time forgiving, that someday they will find the peace in their heart to forgive others. The most difficult word to say, to someone in English, in seriousness- is the word SORRY. Time to evaluate yourself: Have a time to evaluate yourself for the past year and plan how you can be a better person for the coming year. May the Lord grant you good health and success in life. New Year, new hopes and aspirations: New year means new hopes and aspirations. Let us all wish for our success in life in our areas of specializations. Let our New Year’s resolutions be clear in our minds. we will be there for one another as fellow members of humanity. It is a time to revisit our plans of the year. For example, to live healthier, better, longer and safe will be my priority number one. New Year’s resolutions are examples of the universal human desires to have some preparation over what lies ahead, because the future is disquieting and certainly uncertain. To counter that corridor of uncertainty, we do things to successfully manage our lives. We can resolve to be on a healthy diet, to exercise, to quit smoking, and to start saving. It doesn’t matter whether we hold our resolve or not, but committing ourselves to these, at least for a moment, gives us a feeling of more preparedness to face the challenges to come. A 2007 study by British psychologist Richard Wiseman found that out of 3,000 people, followed for a year, 88% failed to achieve the goals of their resolutions, although 52% had been confident they

would, when they made them. Interestingly, New Year’s resolutions also include routine things: • like treating people better, • making new friends, • and paying off debts Towards new resolutions, The Babylonians would return borrowed objects. Jews seek, and offer, forgiveness. The Scots go “first footing,” visiting neighbors to wish them well. We have evolved to depend on others, literally, for our health and safety. Treating people well is a good way to be treated well. Many people resolve to pray more. It is good to pray more so that omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent force i.e. Almighty, is more likely to keep us safe. Jews pray at the start of their New Year to be inscribed in “the Book of Life” for one more year. And though death is inescapable, throughout history humans have dealt with the fear of death by affiliating with religions that promise happy endings. Pray more, and fear of death looks less scary, some people say. Good luck rituals: There are scores of good luck rituals woven among New Year celebrations, also practiced in the name of exercising a little control over fate. The Dutch, for whom the circle is a symbol of success, eat donuts. Greeks bake special Vasilopita cake with

I am excited for the new year and for all the things that are yet to come in our lives. This year, I hope to be more productive in my career and be a good example to my fellow workers. May the Lord grant the desire of my heart this year as well as yours.

There is always a better reason to be happy and thankful all the time. And as for this new year, I pray for even more joyous times. May all our wishes be granted. I hope everyone is enjoying today. Happiest another year to all of us. a coin inside, bestowing good luck in the coming year on whoever finds it in his or her slice. Fireworks on New Year’s Eve started in China millennia ago as a way to chase off evil spirits. The Japanese hold New Year’s Bonneau, or “forget-the-year parties,” to bid farewell to the problems and concerns of the past year and prepare for a better new one. Disagreements and misunderstandings between people are supposed to be resolved, and grudges set aside. In a New Year’s ritual for many cultures, houses are scrubbed to sweep out the bad vibes and make room for better ones. I am excited to meet new friends this year. That means new adventures and memories to create. I hope they will bring extra happiness in life. Have a wonderful New Year 2019. As new year has already dawned, I sincerely wish, may your pockets be heavy and your heart be light; may good luck pursue you each morning and night. Once again, Wishing you a Happy New Year 2019. Wishing you good health, happiness, and success in the coming year and always. Happy New Year to all of us!!!

What is Lohri? Why is it

celebrated? T

This Punjabi festival has more to it than just rewri and groundnuts going into the bonfire.

o begin with, it’s a festival that doesn’t play guessing games with us--like our beloved Diwali or Holi, where one complicated calendar or the other decides which day the festival “falls on”. By default, Lohri--a Punjabi festival--is celebrated on January 13 each year. T h o u g h popular belief has it that Lohri is celebrated to mark the end of peak winter, this festival is traditionally associated with the harvest of the rabi crops. The traditional time to harvest sugarcane crops is January, therefore, Lohri is seen by some to be a harvest festival. And thus, Punjabi farmers see the day after Lohri (Maghi) as the financial New Year. Rewri and groundnuts, anyone? As anyone who has ever celebrated the festival in full fervour around the bonfire would tell you--gur rewri, peanuts and popcorns are the three edibles associated with this festival. Besides these, in Punjab’s villages, it is a tradition to eat

www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

gajjak, sarson da saag and makki di roti on the day of Lohri. It is also traditional to eat ‘til rice’--sweet rice made with jaggery (gur) and sesame seeds. The logic behind consuming these food items is--the general time to sow sugarcane is January to March, and the harvesting period is between December and March. The other important food item of Lohri is radish, which can be harvested between October and January. Punjabi folklore If you haven’t heard

The folklore--Sunder Mundriye--is actually the tale of a man called Dulla Bhatti, who is said to have lived in Punjab during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar. Being quite the ‘Robin Hood’ back in the day, Dulla Bhatti used to supposedly steal from the rich, and rescue poor Punjabi girls being taken forcibly to be sold in slave markets. He then went on to arrange their marriages to boys of the village, and provided them with dowries (from the stolen money). Amongst these girls were Sundri and Mundri, who have now come to be associated with Punjab’s folklore, Sunder Mundriye. Cortsey: indiatoday.in

Punjabi women go around the fire singing “Sunder mundriye ho!”, you clearly haven’t had the chance to visit Punjab around Lohri.

Lava Events… Entertainment Extraordinaires……

s I was tearing down the road in my SUV, to have a maiden interface with the owner[s] of Lava Events, I was thinking about the vying age of competition in the field of live entertainment, wherein, it is not the big eating the small, it is the fast and smart eating the slow and the silly. During my initial interface with them in a local eatery, on a wet evening, my first impression was that Nitin Sharma and Gaurav Shaw both, are fully into this first-generation venture of entertainment. And, you know, one does not afford a second chance to create a first impression. During confabulations, as I walked the talk, I was informed by Nitin Sharma promoter owner of the captioned company that basic theme of this company is to promote happiness by organising Private functions viz. Birthday and Marriage parties, inclusive of food and beverages

Music is entertainment. Entertainment is music. Both dovetail with each other so as to relax the attending audience which is hell- bent to see entertainment as a source of relaxation so that They can recharge themselves for another hectic week- days schedule. These live performances are unbelievably charming, funny and poignant”

12

JANUARY 2019

The audience wants something that entertains them, and whether that entertainment is in the form of a physical match or in the form of a comedy skit or video or promo, it is the job of Lava Events to deliver it, to the point where the audience becomes the biggest champion of the brand. And, unequivocally they know, if we can’t match that, then we will be falling short. Since Lava understands the pulse of entertainment, they are successful so far

being served- and entertainment to the core - to the attending audience. Second, the company holds Public Entertainment Events en masse wherein live performances of artistes in the offshoot of vocal and instrumental singing are rendered from the realm of Bollywood, Pollywood and Lollywood, which enthral the crowd, looking for relaxation at the fag end of the week, in succession. When I requested 42 years young Taurian Nitin- a first generation entrepreneur; the background of venturing into this industry, pat came the reply, “To be

Pure entertainment is not, aNovus -homo- emerging- singer delivering boring songs onstage for an hour or two. And people in tuxes clapping whether they like it or not. It’s the real performers on the stage who can hold people’s attention and keep them from walking away.

among the people and with the people always fascinate me. So, I knowingly chose to be in Events management business. Being experienced in this area in India, and an I T Professional, it happens to be easy for me to infuse right kind of technology into our business from time to time. Since I was 9 years old, entertainment fascinated me, and everyone always told me, what - and what not - to do... you just get a tough skin and have to not care about what people think, or you will not end up in a good place. I listened to my heart and I am at the right place.” added Sharma, as I saw him half lost and revisiting his formative years back home in Punjab India. Nitin is ably supported by Sonia Sharma – her wife- who is working as a Managing Director of the company. The third executive in the think tank is Gaurav Shah. Gaurav is a Radio Host with Spice Radio Vancouver. Gaurav is also working as a promotor Creative Director with this 3-years young company. Gaurav is a 32 years young hottie, who is a post Graduate in Mass communications with linkage of working with Zee ETC Punjabi PTC Pbi. back home in India. To cap it all, compering of such events by experienced Radio Host Gaurav Shah, whose one-off style reminisce me into the unique style of Amin Sayani of Binaca Geet mala [ Radio Ceylon] fame in patches- add flavor to the celebrated evenings. When I asked Gaurav on his area of specialization, he quipped,” I’m in the entertainment business, where you’re only as good as your last show is and there is always a room for improvement.” Speaking from my own experience, in such type of events we see the truth of entertainment, because it is not edited. You see it on stage as it is happening; even if a performer fumbles or forget his words, it’s a part of live entertainment. Plus, Youngsters are the most discern-

ing audience. They want entertainment, they want an outlet to express and relax.” Though this 3-years young company, has held scores of such events in Down Town Vancouver BC area, some notable ones are: • Pankaj Udhas Nite • Master Saleem show • Band Baja Hit Barat Show • Mumbai Express • Retro Nite • New Year 2019 Nite celebration At the fag end of the interface, When I asked where this trio see themselves after 10 years, I saw both lost in a profound thinking mode and Nitin started replying with a considered pause, we would like to see ourselves: to be together, hosting more Grand Shows and producing entertainment shows including films. 7 Solutions That Can Save a

Relationship Every relationship has its ups and downs. While having these moments of crisis, it is important to identify the reasons behind them and act on them in a timely manner. person will be responsible for handling which costs and what would each person be willing to give up. Set some money aside for each of you to spend at your discretion. No one likes to constantly account for every single penny they spend.

6. Don’t fight over household chores

Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist

W

hile in the heat of the moment it might seem like it’s time to call it quits, these seven solutions can help you save your relationship and build an even stronger foundation.

1. Take time to communicate

Communication involves spending some face-to-face time, away from all the distractions, including your work and social media. Listen to what the other person has to say instead defending yourself. Don’t interrupt until your partner has finished speaking. Avoid using phrases like “You always ..”, “I wasn’t wrong …” or “You never …”. Such phrases show that you aren’t really listening and believe that you aren’t at fault. Be quiet, pay attention, nod often, and use your body language to show that you are listening.

2. Be Honest

When things go south, we tend to cover up our mistakes and justify our actions. But in fact, we should be doing the opposite. If you have made a mistake, don’t hide it because of the fear of repercussions. Own up to it and tell your partner what really happened. While they may

14

JANUARY 2019

resent you in the beginning, they will appreciate your honesty and come to terms with the situation. Also, it’s always better they hear it from you rather than someone else.

3. Prioritize your relationship

While it’s easy to get caught up in your own life, making an effort to focus on the relationship is one of the most important reasons why relationships thrive. No matter how busy life gets, plan activities together and spend time out for each other. Movie night, date night, weekend getaways, and even small, thoughtful gifts can go a long way. Give compliments and celebrate your special moments. Show that you still truly care.

4. Respect one another

There comes a time

when you start believing what you do or think is more important. This is dangerous. Relationships thrive on mutual respect. Respect your partner’s job, lifestyle, beliefs, principles, and opinions, even if they differ from yours. At the very least, spend some time to understand what your partner does and how they feel. That shows you’re making an effort out of respect.

5. Don’t let money drive a wedge between you

Issues with money in a relationship often lead to nasty fights and pointing fingers at the lifestyle of the other person isn’t unsupportive and not recommended. If your financial situation isn’t good, then be ready to make some lifestyle changes instead of simply expecting the other person to change theirs. Sit together, and map out your financial situation with pure honesty. Decide which

Most couples in relationships have work outside of their homes. Expecting one partner to take care of all household chores is unrealistic. Instead, map out your respective jobs while at home. Often, there are chores that neither partner likes to take up. In such cases, be open to considering other options, or taking turns doing the chore in question. This is how you can be organized and fair to one another, eventually avoiding any resentment building up over time.

7. Build trust

When a loved one does something unexpected that ends up hurting us, we feel betrayed and don’t trust the other person anymore. Trust is critical to any relationship. If you and your partner don’t trust each other, make an effort to build it. Be consistent, truthful, and deliver on your promises. Don’t dig up old wounds. Consider everything you say as once you’ve said something hurtful, you cannot take it back. There are always problems in any relationship. But if you pay attention and take some measures to resolve your issues, you can save your relationship. Be realistic, caring, understanding, and willing to do what it takes to fix your relationship.

The Ultimate Orthodontic Retainer Guide Dr Vishal Sharma BSc, DDS, Cert. Ortho. FRCD(C), FCDS(BC)

W

hen you get your braces off or finish your last Invisalign tray, it’s a momentous occasion. It means you made it through the teethstraightening process successfully and you have a beautiful new smile to show for it. However, in order to ensure those results last forever, there is one more step in your orthodontic treatment and that’s wearing a retainer. I know, I know, that’s probably not what you wanted to hear but as my Abbotsford, Langley and Surrey Invisalign and braces patients can attest, when you see how awesome your smile looks after your treatment, your main priority will be keeping it exactly how it is. So, wearing an orthodontic retainer actually won’t feel like a huge deal.

have to get acclimated to it again. I’ve been asked, should you wear your retainer if it doesn’t fit? While some pressure is normal after a few days of not using it, if it’s been a while and you have difficulty wearing it or it just randomly stops fitting (a sign it’s been damaged), book an appointment with me and I’ll get to the bottom of the issue and, if necessary, create a new retainer for you.

What is an Orthodontic Retainer and How Does it Work?

Retainers are orthodontic appliances that hold the teeth in their new positions, allowing you to retain your results, hence the name. Orthodontic treatment consists of two phases: the active phase and the retention phase. During the active phase, your braces or Invisalign aligners exert constant, gentle pressure that moves the teeth. This force causes changes at the cellular level in your gum tissue, periodontal ligaments and alveolar bone, which are all responsible for securing the teeth in your mouth. During this process, known as bone remodeling, the bone tissue breaks down and is removed from the body (bone resorption). The periodontal ligaments also stretch due to the force application from braces or Invisalign. This is why teeth can sometimes feel a bit loose during orthodontic treatment. These changes allow the teeth to move freely into place. When new tissue and bone forms (bone ossification) in the spaces where the teeth used to be, they get secured in their new places. All of this happens during the active phase of your treatment. When I take your braces off or you stop wearing your aligners, suddenly, that constant force is gone. Of course, there will be a natural settling process after treatment and the teeth will make almost imperceptible movements. As an orthodontist, I plan for this and some settling can even be beneficial and further improve the bite. However, relapse is a different story. The teeth do have a tendency to want to go back to their old places and this can happen rather quickly, particularly in younger patients with fast metabolisms whose bones are still developing. Additionally, when the bone ossification process I just talked about happens and those ligaments go back to their normal size, the teeth need to be in the correct place so they’re firmly cemented in their new positions. As if this wasn’t complicated enough, there are also gravitational and

18

JANUARY 2019

age-related changes that occur in the body. These changes aren’t limited to our appearance and also affect the bone and tissue in the mouth. Now, throw tooth wear from chewing and pressure from your tongue into the mix and you can see why it is a challenge to maintain the results from orthodontic treatment. So, how do I meet this challenge? I address movement, ward off relapse and keep settling to a minimum with the retention phase, which involves, you guessed it, wearing a retainer after braces or Invisalign. As for how a retainer works, well it holds the teeth in their new position while the tissues and bone reorganize to give you stable results. In the short-term, a dental retainer will essentially lock your smile into place. Over the long-term, with continued use, you can prevent movement from age-related changes too. When you finish the active phase of treatment, Dr. Sharma, Dr. Lin or Dr. Koo will fit you for a custom retainer and give you directions for how long to wear a retainer after braces or Invisalign. Every patient is different and it will depend on the complexity of your case. For a removable retainer, you may need to wear it nightly and for several hours during the day for the first few months. Then, you’ll transition to using just at night for a year or two before eventually only needing to wear it a few nights a week. It’s really important that you follow your orthodontist’s directions for using your retainer (or retainers) since getting lax about wearing it or not using it at all can result in needing orthodontic treatment again down the road. Your teeth can feel a little sensitive when you first start wearing a retainer. The feeling is similar to when you started braces or Invisalign. This will go away in a few days. If you skip wearing your retainer for a little while, you’ll feel the same discomfort and

Types of Retainers

There are two main types of retainers – and some subtypes. Your orthodontist will help you choose the best one for your needs. Here is what is typically on the menu:

• Fixed Retainer – Fixed retainers,

or permanent retainers, consist of a customized wire that is bonded to the back of your teeth on the tongue-side with a special material. They can last for decades with proper care and no one will be able to tell you’re wearing them. The benefit is you don’t have to keep track of it. I’ll often use a fixed retainer if the teeth were rotated, if you had lower crowding or if you had significant gaps between the upper front teeth. It can be used in addition to a permanent retainer or on its own, depending on your case.

• Removable Retainer – Re-

movable types of retainers include a traditional retainer with a thin wire that wraps around the teeth, called a Hawley retainer, or a clear, plastic retainer, referred to as an Essix retainer. A Hawley retainer consists of a small piece of plastic that fits against the roof of your mouth or the bottom of your mouth, depending on if it’s an upper retainer or a lower retainer, with a wire attached to it. The wire goes around the front of the teeth. The wire on a Hawley retainer is visible, however there aren’t brackets or other components so it’s not as noticeable as braces. One of the benefits of a traditional wire retainer is that I can make slight adjustments with it, which I can’t do with the other types of retainers. If, for example, you forget to wear your retainer for a bit and a tooth is slightly out of place, I may be able to shift it back by making an adjustment to your retainer.

Clear retainers, which are technically thermoformed retainers or vacuum formed retainers, are synonymous with the term Essix retainer. However, Essix is actually brand of a material that’s used to make them, so it’s kind of like calling a plastic baggie a Ziploc baggie or a vacuum cleaner a Hoover. Clear retainers are made from a plastic material and are shaped like a horseshoe to fit your dental arch. They go over your teeth just like an Invisalign aligner. Invisalign even has its own brand of retainer called a Vivera retainer. The retainer is extremely durable and resists cracking. How long does an Invisalign retainer last? It can last for many years if you take care of it, however, it will need to be replaced when you notice signs of wear.

Caring for Retainers

Though the specifics will depend on the type of retainer you have and the materials it’s made with, here are some general tips for how to clean retainers, keep them safe and ensure they can do their job to maintain your beautiful smile: • Retainers collect plaque and are in constant contact with spit and bacteria, so they can get pretty gross if you don’t clean them. As for how to clean retainers, for removable retainers, whether it’s a clear retainer or a Hawley retainer, brush it daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Be sure to get all of its surfaces. Toothpaste can scratch your retainer, especially if it’s an abrasive one. Instead, use mild dish soap like Dawn. After brushing your retainer, rinse it off really well. Every once in a while, it will need a deeper clean. I’m often asked can you use denture cleaner on retainers? The answer is, sometimes, but ask me first to make sure it’s okay for your specific type. Some retainers respond well to cleaners like Efferdent for the deeper cleanings. You can also use a special retainer cleaning solution. Invisalign makes them specifically for Invisalign retainers. Don’t feel obligated to spend the money though. A DIY solution of equal parts distilled white vinegar and water is effective too. Mix the solution and let your retainer sit for about 15 minutes.

Felicity Jones strives to do justice to Ginsburg in film

T

he Ruth Bader Ginsburg film On the Basis of Sex was about to fall apart when Felicity Jones got her hands on the script. The origin story about the future Supreme Court justice written by Ginsburg’s nephew Daniel Stiepleman had been in various

20

stages of development since 2012, looking for the right star (Natalie Portman was originally attached), the right director (Mimi Leder could only do it after finishing the third season of the HBO show “The Leftovers”) and the right time to finally hit go. But it was looking wobbly

again and they needed an answer fast. The British actress, fresh off the Star Wars film Rogue One, had been looking for a project about a woman and her career and had recently become familiar with Justice Ginsburg, whose celebrity has only grown of late. And Ginsburg, who had seen Jones in her Oscarnominated role in The Theory of Everything, had already given her informal approval to cast Jones. (“I think the only thing she was nervous about was getting rid of that English accent,” laughed Leder.) Jones read it in a weekend, said yes, and, finally, the stars had aligned. The film was happening. “I didn’t take it on lightly” Jones said despite her quick answer. “It was really intimidating at first, like gosh how do I do justice to this per-

son?” Ginsburg didn’t have advice for Jones when they met (“She said, ‘I’ve seen your work and I know you can do it,’” Jones said.) But she did have one request for the filmmakers: That they would be absolutely precise in capturing the law. Can you blame her? This film is complimentary to the documentary, and focuses in on two very specific parts of Ginsburg’s early days in law long before she would go on to be confirmed as an associate justice in 1993: First as one of the few female students at Harvard Law School in the mid1950s, and then as a professor at Rutgers in the 1960s, when she started getting involved with gender discrimination cases with the American Civil Liberties Union. Best Exercises To Deal With A Weight Loss Plateau When you keep stepping on the weighing scale week after week to see no change in your weight, in spite of exercising and following a rigid diet, it can be an incredibly disheartening feeling. It is mostly because you have hit a weight loss plateau, and it’s time to make some changes in your fitness plan to see changes in your weight.

Ritika Tiwari Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist

T

here are a few exercises that can help you get out of the plateau and back to losing weight.

1. HIIT High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is an exercise routine that consists of short, extreme bursts of physical activity along with your regular workouts. They include several combinations of exercises from burpees to rowing to full-body strength training workouts, all done in short sets in rapid succession. A typical HIIT routine could last from anywhere between 10 minutes to an hour. The aim is to keep increasing the intensity of the workout as you get accustomed to each routine. For great results with HIIT, you need to keep going further out of your comfort zone. 2. Strength Training Working your muscles will help to strengthen bone tissue,

increase lean mass, and ultimately boost metabolic rate. Strength training will burn more calories, boost your metabolism, and build lean muscle mass all at the same time. You’ll also feel stronger and become more injuryresistant. If you’re just getting started with strength training, you might gain a few kilos at first. But there’s no reason to be alarmed. Strength training helps you add lean muscle mass, which is reflected in the minor weight gain. Continuous strength training will keep converting fat to muscle and eventually, you’ll end up looking toned. Just like with every other exercise, It’s important to keep switching your weights once your body starts getting comfortable with the current weights. The secret to weight loss is to keep pushing your body beyond its limits. 3. Running Running is a great cardio activity as it pumps up your heart rate and helps reduce calories effectively. The problem with running is once your get consistent, you might not see the incredible results that you were seeing in the beginning. That’s why if you’ve been running consistently, you should take it a notch further. Either increase the amount of time you spend

5 minutes by running at an easy pace again. Balance this activity with appropriate warm ups and cool downs and a balanced diet.

running, or increase your running speed. So, either run longer or run faster. Another thing to try out would be running short sprints at high speeds. Alternating sprints always helps burn calories faster. For instance, warm up at an easy pace for 5 minutes. Then run 5 minutes very fast, and then recover for

4. Functional training Functional training involves mimicking movements that you do everyday, with emphasis on using multiple muscle groups at once. As you use more energy to perform these movements, you also end up burning more calories. The goal is make work on every muscle in your body and improve muscle stability through safe and injury-free movements. Common functional training exercises are lateral lunges, squats, overhead presses, push-ups, deadlifts, chest press and kettlebell swings. Functional training, combined with your usual cardiovascular workout or strength training routine, will help you achieve your weight loss goals faster. Also, with its myriads of combinations of exercises, you’ll never get bored with functional training. Don’t give up This isn’t an exercise, but a reminder for all those who are trying their best to lose weight. Weight loss is a process, and sometimes you hit a bump in the road. You shouldn’t let that derail your efforts. You’ve come a long way and when you hit a weight loss plateau, it’s important to be patient, switch up your workout routine, and keep working towards your goals. You must believe that you can and you will reach your goal.

“I’m so glad I’m working with Deepika.” – Vikrant Massey

D

eepika Padukone has finally signed her next project after Padmaavat and that has made her fans ecstatic for sure. Deepika has given her nod for Meghna Gulzar’s next titled Chhapaak. The film is based on the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal and will go on floors in March. Deepika and the crew will begin prepping for the film from February. However, not just Deepika, there is another actor who has grabbed headlines as he will be seen opposite the superstar in the film. It is none other than Vikrant Massey. He has earlier worked in films like Dil Dhadakne Do, Lipstick Under My Burkha, Death in the Gunj and a few more of them. And now he will be seen opposite Deepika in Megha’s next film. We chatted with him about grabbing the opportunity, to which he said, “I really don’t know. In the sense Meghna di has been very kind and she said half the things. I’m just very humbled at this point. So ya, we’ve been wanting to work with each other for a while, and the script came to me and this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to actually realise your dream of working with someone you’ve been wanting to and I didn’t want to let this go. And I’m so glad I’m working with Deepika as well at the same time.” Kudos to you, boy! PTI

ense of Balance needed in this Industry, says Sara Actress Sara Ali Khan has emerged as a star right from her debut film Kedarnath. However, the actress has complete clarity on how to deal with pressures from the industry. “This industry can engulf you but you have to have a sense of balance, and you can’t let it get too much on your head. After the release of the film there will be a void. Because acting is a job, many people will be around you. So when you are alone that’s when you learn how to deal with things,” she reasons. In response to her being touted as an intelligent actress, she says, “I am just educated and that’s why they are getting confused.” Ask Sara if she is a feminist and she replies, “I believe in equality. I believe in gender equality, class equality, religious equality and political and social equality. So if this is how one defines feminism, then yes, I am a feminist.” The actress will now be seen in Simmba. Cortsey: DECCAN CHRONICLE

Alcoholic drinks the good, the bad or the ugly? Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Health Coach of University of Victoria

T

he term hard liquor refers to an alcoholic beverage that is produced through the distillation (careful boiling and condensation) of grains, fruit, or vegetables that have already been fermented (converting sugars- like glucose and fructose- into cellular energy, which creates ethanol i.e. alcohol as a byproduct). The distillation process purifies the liquid and removes water from it, which has the effect of increasing the proportion of alcohol content in it. Since the new beverages have a significantly higher percentage of alcohol by volume [ ABV], they are thought of as being “harder” than un-distilled beverages. Beer, wine, cider, and sake [Japanese rice wine] also go through the fermentation process, but they are not distilled, giving them a relatively low alcohol by volume content of 15 percent or less. A drink like Brandy, on the other hand, is produced by the distillation of wine, which gives it a 35 percent alcohol content.

The History of Distilling:

Distillation is the action of purifying a liquid by a process of heating and cooling and thereby force water out of it. This happens after fermentation. The fermentation does happen as per procedure. When a wild yeast finds some rotting fruit, it then ferments the sugars in it into alcohol.

Categories of Alcoholic drinks:

An alcoholic drink is a drink that contains ethanol, commonly known as alcohol. Normally, alcoholic drinks are divided into three general classes:

Beers: Beer is one of the oldest and most

widely consumed alcoholic drinks in the world, and the third most popular drink overall after water and tea. Beer is brewed from cereal grains—most commonly from malted barley, though wheat, maize (corn), and rice are also used. Malt is germinated cereal grains that have been dried in a process known as “malting”. The grains are made to germinate by soaking in water, and are then halted from germinating further by drying with hot air. During the brewing process, fermentation of the starch sugars in the wort produces ethanol and carbonation in the resulting beer. Most modern beer is brewed with hops[the flowers of the hop plant], which add bitterness and other flavors and act as a natural preservative and stabilizing agent. Other flavoring agents such as herbs, or fruits may be included or used instead of hops. Wort is the liquid extracted from the mashing process during the brewing of beer or whisky. Wort contains the sugars, the most important being maltose and maltotriose, that will be fermented by the brewing yeast to produce alcohol.

Wines: Wine is an alcoholic beverage

made from fermented grapes. Yeast consumes the sugar in the grapes and converts it to ethanol, carbon dioxide, and heat. Different varieties of grapes and strains of yeasts produce different styles of wine.

Distilled beverages:

Liquor is an alcoholic drink produced by distillation of grains, fruits or vegetables that have already gone through alcoholic fermentation. The distillation process purifies the liquid and removes diluting components like water, for the purpose of increasing its proportion of alcohol content.

Liquor is an alcoholic drink produced by distillation of grains, fruit, or vegetables that have already gone through alcoholic fermen-

tation. The distillation process purifies the liquid and removes diluting components like water, for the purpose of increasing the proportion of alcohol content. In most of the countries, alcoholic drinks are legally allowed and consumed. And more than one hundred countries have laws regulating their manufacturing, sale, and consumption en masse. Needless to add that, such laws specify the minimum age at which a person may legally buy or drink them. This minimum age varies between 16 and 25 years, depending upon the country and the type of drink. Most Nations set it at 18 years of age. In Canada, 19 years of age in BC, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, Ontario, PEI, Saskatchewan, and Yukon. It is 18 years of age in Alberta,] Manitoba, and Quebec.

In Canada, government is also selling liquor from her owned outlets. Liquor stores, agencies and other

retail outlets sold $22.5 billion worth of alcoholic beverages during the fiscal year ending March 31, 2017, up 2.3% from the previous year. The total volume of alcohol sold in Canada in 2016/2017 went up 0.1%, to 3,074 million liters. The net income realized by provincial and territorial liquor authorities increased by 7.0% to $6.5 billion in 2016/2017. All liquor authorities reported positive net income in 2016/2017

The so-called drunken monkey hypothesis proposes that human attraction to ethanol [alcohol] may derive from the dependence of our primate ancestors of Homo sapiens on ripe and fermenting fruit as a dominant food source. Ethanol naturally occurs in ripe and overripe fruits when yeasts ferment sugars, and consequently early primates (and many other fruit-eating animals) have evolved a genetically based behavioral attraction to alcohol. May be that is the reason why we imbibe pleasure by indulging in it as day follows night. However 7 out of 13 jurisdictions reported lower net income compared with the previous fiscal year. Net income and other government revenue derived from the control and sale of alcoholic beverages, including excise taxes, retail sales taxes, specific taxes on alcohol, and licence and permit revenues, was $11.9 billion in 2016/2017, an increase of 3.9% over the previous fiscal year.

Different types of alcoholic drinks are: Beer

Barley, water, hops and yeast are the four ingredients that are required for making beer. The sugar from the barley are extracted and is converted to alcohol by the yeast. Other grains like maize, rice, rye and wheat are also used in making beer as an alternative. The Canadian love affair with hops and barley continues, but more and more drinkers are now opting for the grape. Beer remained the alcoholic drink of choice for Canadians, with $9.1 billion in sales and accounting for 40.6% of total sales of alcoholic beverages in 2016/2017. However, the market share of other alcoholic beverages, notably wine, continued to grow.

Whiskey

Whiskey is type of distilled alcoholic beverage, generally made from fermented grain mash including barley, corn, rye, and wheat. The distinctive taste of the drink is achieved after it is fermented in charred white oak wood. The aging process of whiskey stops once it is bottled from the casks. Up to 40% of alcohol is present in whiskey.

There are various types of whiskey like Bourbon whiskey, Single Malt, Tennessee Whiskey, Rye Whiskey, Cask Strength Whiskey, and many more. It has around 40―53.3% ABV.

As per a recent research, “those who do not drink should not start it; those who are into it should shift to Red Wine [ as it has antioxidants] plus moderation is the key. It will not be out of place to add that drink[s] should be taken with fiber loaded grains or cellulose loaded plants / fruits/ vegetables so that the effect of glucoseloaded -empty -calories in the drink is diluted by decelerating the speed of glucose from digestive system into the blood.

Vodka is traditionally made from potatoes or fermented cereal grains. Some brands also make it from other substances like fruit or sugar. One of the most used and loved alcoholic drink, vodka is either consumed neat or as cocktails like Martini, Bloody Mary and Cosmopolitan. Vodka is a made by distilling fermented grains or potatoes, although some modern brands use other substances such as wheat, rye, corn, fruits, or sugar. It contains purified ethanol and water which, at times, goes through various stages of distillation. Vodka has around 35―50% ABV.

Brandy

Spirits

Cognac

Spirits isn’t a specific name for any drinks or something. It is simply a term used to describe unsweetened and distilled alcohol. To produce any type of spirit, the use of fermented substance is accepted which later goes to the distillation process. This method makes spirits strong and potent. All spirits or hard liquor contain a high amount of alcohol, which is anywhere from 20% to 65% ABV.

Rum

The distilled spirits such as brandy, gin, rum, tequila, etc., have 0% carbohydrates, fats, and cholesterol? Also, all spirits, except for beer and wine, are technically clear and colorless to begin with. The golden-brown hue and other rich colors come from the aging process.

Technically a type of brandy but cognac deserves a special mention because this particular drink can only be made if certain requirements are met. It is made using special Agni Blanc grapes, must be distilled twice in copper pot stills and is normally aged at least two years in French oak style barrels. Rum is produced from sugarcane juice through the fermentation and distillation process, or by molasses. The wonderful flavor of rum comes after aging it in oak barrels. The storage time is as long as 30 years (sometimes even more). The ABV of rum is somewhere between 40―55%. One of the most loved alcoholic drinks, rum is actually made by using the by- products of sugarcane , for example-molasses or sugarcane juice directly and is then distilled. The liquid is then aged in barrels.

Gin

Similar to vodka, gin gets its name from Juniper berries. It is made from juniper, citrus peel, cinnamon, almond citrus peel, cinnamon, almond, coriander, or liquorice, with neutral grain alcohol. The ABV of gin is around 37―40%. Unlike other spirits, gin is meant to be combined with mixers and juices; it is never intended to be served as is.

Wines:

wine

Vodka

An after-dinner drink, brandy is derived from the Dutch word, brandewijn; which means “burnt wine”. It is produced by distilling wine and contains around 35―60% ABV. There are three types of brandy available all around the world―grape brandy, fruit brandy, and pomace brandy. Although brandy can be made from any fruit but in order to achieve higher acidity it is traditionally made from early grapes. Generally, an after-dinner drink, brandy contains 35-60% alcohol. Unlike whiskey, brandy is aged either in wooden barrels or through caramel coloring.

RELATIONSHIP

Tequila

The use of a plant, blue agave (found in a town in Mexico) is important to make tequila. However, due to a change in a Mexican law, tequilas don’t necessarily need to be made with only distilled blue agave. There are different types of tequila available which do have 100% agave. The various colors of tequila are obtained due to aging process, method, and time duration. It has 40―50% ABV.

First of all, wise people know that it is not the drink but the quantity you drink that matters. However, some alcoholic drinks are better than others. Red wine appears to be particularly beneficial because it is very high in high concentration of healthy antioxidants, being derived from chlorophyll laden colored grapes. Plus, red wine is linked to more health benefits than any other alcoholic beverage. It will not be out of place to mention that consuming high amounts of red wine does not provide greater health benefits. Heavy drinking causes health problems — regardless of the type of beverage.

How much is too much?

Alcohol intake recommendations are usually based on the number of standard drinks taken per day. The problem is, most people have no idea what qualifies as a “standard drink.” To confuse matters, the official definition of a standard drink differs between countries to countries. As per National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, USA, one standard drink is any drink that contains 0.6 fluid ounces (14 grams) of pure alcohol (ethanol). Moderate drinking is defined as one standard drink per day for women and two for men, while heavy drinking is defined as more than three drinks per day for women and four for men. Drinking patterns are always important. Binge drinking is not advisable and is a form of alcohol abuse and can cause harm to health.

Hard Truths about Hard Liquor

Infused with roots, barks, flowers, seeds, herbs, spices and fortified by adding brandy, vermouth is actually an aromatized wine. Generally, it is of two types - sweet and dry. This drink is famous as an ingredient in Martini.

Each spirit is its own world of taste, history, culture, science, ABV and personal experience. But for a lot of people, the line between elegant enjoyment and a crippling drinking problem is very thin; and what can be an enlightening, rewarding hobby quickly becomes a addicting dependence on alcohol and by being drunk, sometimes our health, finances and relationships are adversely affected.

Which drink is one of the best:

Chronic Alcoholism:

Vermouth

Wine can be categorized into 5 fundamental groups―red, white, rosé, sparkling, and fortified. Within each group, there are hundreds of different grape varieties and winemaking styles. Wine is produced after the fermentation process of grape juice is complete. The process takes a month or even years to complete. Depending on the particular wine, the aging process can vary. It is said that the longer the aging process, the better it tastes. To make wine, grapes are crushed with various kinds of yeast. This yeast is the main ingredient which produces alcohol after converting the sugars in grapes. Most wines are below 9% ABV to above 16% AVB.

The percentage of pure Alcohol by volume in various beverages is:12 Oz. of regular beer= about 5%, 12 oz. of glass malt liquor= about 7%, 5 oz. of Table Wine = about 12% and Hard Liquor[ whiskey, gin, rum, vodka, tequila etc.] 1.5 oz. 80-proof spirit is about 40% alcohol.”

Conclusion:

At the end of the day, the effects of alcohol range from a positive impact on your wellbeing to a health disaster. Drinking small amounts — especially of red wine — and with supportive food is linked to various health benefits, as per experts, though there are views on the contrary. On the other hand, alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction are linked to severe negative effects on both physical and mental health. If you enjoy alcohol within limits and don’t binge, there is no compelling reason to avoid it. Apart from drinks, there are many different ways to enjoy the finer things in life without raising a toast. Treatment and rehabilitation help individuals find a healthier and productive path to claim as their own. However, if you tend to drink excessively or notice that alcohol causes problems in your life, you should avoid it as much as possible. Because alcohol impact depends entirely on the individual it’s good for some and terrible for others. The smart thing is, “watch the type of drink, the quantity, your capacity, accompanying food and to cap it all the time and

live life king size

Those with chronic alcoholism can receive inpatient treatment; those who get help early might qualify for outpatient services; and there are combinations of both, specifically designed to address the behavioral and psychological causes and effects of the drinking problem. Clients might receive medication to lower their physical dependence on alcohol and deal with the side effects of weaning off alcohol, as well as counseling and therapy to address the mental health fallout of the addiction. Once formal treatment has completed, aftercare support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous and other sober programs can show clients how they can apply the fundamentals of treatment in everyday, real-life living.

6 Make-up mistakes we often make

M

ost of us barely have time to spend even 10 minutes on our make-up every morning. Hence, it is important that we utilize those precious minutes like a pro and fix those make-up mistakes without making too much of a mess. Here’s what you can do... •M ore often than not, we end up with clumps of mascara on our eyelashes, which can be a pain to remove. Instead of trying to immediately remove it, wait a minute or two till it is dry and then peel off. This will prevent smudging. •N ot all of us are blessed with thick, dark eyebrows and have to use eyebrow pencils/ mascaras to make them darker. But we often end up over-pencilling. Correct this by using a small eyebrow brush to comb your brows and apply the tiniest bit of concealer on the browbone and just above your brows.

32

JANUARY 2019

• We’ve all been guilty of applying too much of blush. Fix this by using a small sponge to gently remove the excess colour from the apples of your cheeks. Remember not to dab too hard or you might end up smudging the blush, making it appear even darker than before. • Getting your eyeliner smudged on your eyelid is a mistake most women have made. Instead of fretting, simply take apply some concealer on your eyelid and top it up with some a neutral-toned eyeshadow. • Patchy eyeshadow is another common problem. Apply some concealer on a brush and gently blend it with your eyeshadow to get an even tone. • All set to party and realise your face looks like the glitter fairy exploded on it? Instead of using a damp tissue, use scotch tape on a earbud to remove excess glitter. Cortsey: TNN

I opened the book and read a few lines – Man marzi kar mapean kite viah diti (Parents married her as they wished) Mel jorh na koi jis larh la diti (He was no match for her at

all) How beautiful lines these were! I read the name of the writer – Jasbir Gunachauria. I saw Jasbir’s signature gifting that book to her husband. “Can I see him?”, I asked Jasvir when she came back. “I’ll ask my husband for that.”, Jasvir replied. “Wow! Some Punjabis are extremely wonderful people.”, I mused. 30. Adam and Eve The other Sunday evening, I was having a walk in the nearby park. A Punjabi girl, Manjit, met me there. She asked me about myself very sympathetically. I liked that very much. I told her my whole story. She was a Punjabi girl but she had become a Christian after coming to Canada. She invited me to her church the next Sunday. I told her that I didn’t have a car. She assured me that she would pick me up and drop back home. Her nice behaviour impressed me a lot. The next Sunday, Manjit came to pick me up. We reached a church at 9:30 A.M. A group of English People had gathered on the main floor for service. A group of Punjabi people had gathered in its basement for service. Service meant a lesson from the Bible to be read and explained by a pastor and songs in praise of Jesus to be sung by all. The service time was from 10 A.M. to 12 PM.

After the service, people from both groups gathered on the main floor for brunch and met each other with great affection. The people who had invited all new comers introduced them to others. That was a wonderful get-together. Finding a suitable opportunity, I asked manjit and three other Punjabi ladies that I wanted to abort my baby. They forbade me even to think like that and adviced, “A mother or father can be guilty; what crime should the baby in the womb be punished for? Abortion is a crime and God punishes us severely for this crime.” The Punjabi Priest and his wife also met me with great warmth. They repeatedly requested me to come to the church every Sunday. I felt those people were the happiest people on the earth. Manjit dropped me at my house later on. I learned a great many things from this church. I began feeling at home there. They believed that God created Adam, the first man, in the Eden Garden for his pleasure. God allowed him to enjoy everything there. God had forbidden him from eating fruits of a tree that enlightened with differences between good and evil. God told Adam that he would die if he ate the fruit. Once God felt that it wasn’t nice if Adam lived alone. Then God created a woman and called her Eve. Contd. in next issue

Diversity Village is a culturally sensitive “complex care” or “long term care”

Written By Dorothy Poudel

O

n this festive occasion PICS Society is pleased to announce that the Diversity Village proposal has been submitted to Fraser Health on December 20, 2018. Diversity Village is a culturally sensitive “complex care” or “long term care” facility to meet the needs of seniors who require the support of full nursing services. The proposed facility will accommodate

125 residents in private rooms on 2.7 acres of land. It will be a multi-storey concrete building, built to hospital standards, designed in the style of a village. The cost of this project is estimated to be approximately $66 million, we have the available land, purchased and paid for. The land procured for

PICS Diversity Village passed the Third reading at the Surrey Council on January 22nd following a public hearing and has been rezoned, subdivided, and redesignated as Multiple Residential. We would like to take the opportunity to thank the community and our partners for their continuous support for PICS Society’s programs and services. The Diversity Village Program has especially been supported by the media, politicians and community partners like the City of Surrey. PICS C.E.O. Mr. Satbir Cheema is grateful to be part of a society that takes pride in caring for our seniors and recognizes the founding C.E.O. for his

extraordinary vision for the South Asian Community, “we have reached this stage because of the Founding C.E.O. Charan Gill and the PICS Board of Directors who set the process in motion in order for PICS to be eligible to place the bid,” Satbir Cheema, C.E.O. Culturally sensitive health care is proved to be a successful and beneficial approach, especially when it comes to caring for our seniors in a society and community that has become increasingly multi-cultural. With the strong support of that community, this much needed project will become a reality in the near future.

Beauty Trends You Must Know About

Natural and organic beauty products, once a niche market, are now mainstream. From local manufacturers to big-box retailers, everyone is adding natural beauty products to their catalogs.

Ritika Tiwari Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist

W

hile some of these may seem to be ancient remedies getting a modern makeover, others are fantastic and sustainable new technologies. People are turning towards natural and organic beauty products because they are finalising understanding the long effects chemical products can have on their body and the environment as well. With so many trends popping up every minute, it’s hard to keep track of what’s genuine and what’s not. To help you out, we have put together the ultimate list of the top clean and green beauty trends to follow 1. Natural deodorants Antiperspirants have a notorious reputation for their aluminium content, which clogs our sweat glands to minimize perspiration and body odour. While there have been several studies linking aluminium to breast cancer and Alzheimer’s, nothing’s conclusive. But it’s better to be safe than sorry. That’s why aluminium-free deodorants made of natural ingredients have gone mainstream and are trending right now.

2. Activated charcoal From face masks to toothpaste, activated charcoal is everywhere. It is a great absorbent and has become the new detox trend. When mixed with face masks, it helps remove dirt and oil from the skin’s pores, thereby unclogging them and making the skin firmer, cleaner, and brighter. Studies claim that activated charcoal in toothpaste naturally whitens the teeth and reduces bad breath. Other studies claim that activated charcoal helps reduce bloating and flatulence. 3. Beauty superfood and supplements Due to growing awareness and education on the harmful effects of preservatives and chemicals associated with traditional skin care products, many are embracing natural alternatives such as beauty superfoods. Popular super-

foods include goji berry, pomegranate, cranberry, coffee berry, acai, turmeric (or curcumin) and chia seed oil. Sometimes, the skin needs a boost from within and that’s where supplements come in. Supplements for Vitamins A, C, E are being used to rejuvenate hair, skin, and nails. Others in demand include supplements for collagen, biotin, Coenzyme Q10 (or CoQ10), hyaluronic acid, and phytonutrients. 4. Probiotic skincare Probiotics are live bacteria found in yoghurt and other supplements that generally treat problems in the stomach. In skin care products, probiotics are supposed to rebuild your skin cells and bring a glow to the skin. They are particularly helpful with repairing sensitive skin, acne, and combating the effects of

free radicals. 5. Crystal rollers Rollers made from jade or rose quartz are in demand because they are amazing for the skin. These rollers massage the skin, detoxify it, and tone the facial muscles. This, in turn, helps reduce wrinkles and puffiness. 6. Locally-sourced ingredients With growing awareness of the presence of pesticides in skin care products, many brands are sourcing local, organic ingredients for their products. In addition to being more effective, local, organic ingredients are often produced without pesticides and other toxins. Being locally grown, they also cut transportation costs which helps reduce environmental pollution caused by machines and vehicles. 7. ing

Eco-friendly packagReducing plastic use has a huge impact on environmental pollution. Several beauty companies are now switching to environmentally-friendly, biodegradable packaging to alleviate the dangers of climate change. While some brands are using recyclable materials, others are coming up with plant-based packaging to do away with even recycling. Everyone craves beautiful skin. With these natural beauty trends, glowing, radiant, and refreshing skin has become a lot easier. With natural ingredients, the effects would also be long-lasting and not have adverse effects in the long run.

Kangana Ranaut: Nothing I love more than directing

K

angana Ranaut, who is making a controversial directorial debut with Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi after its original director Radha Krishna Jagarlamudi left the project, says she loved sweating it out like a technician on the film. At the Manikarnika trailer launch, Kangana said she loved being out in the sun and would swap the luxuries of a star for a seat behind the camera without any hesitation. “I don’t know what is it about me, but I really love working as a technician. No actor wants to be out in the sun as opposed to being in the AC van. No actor wants to be among 80 sweaty people who are asking you 100 questions,” she says. “I don’t know what is it about me that I am so comfortable in this job. There is nothing I love more than directing. Even though I don’t get to wear make-up or

look like my star self or get any special treatment,” she adds.”It is absolutely a worker’s life to be honest, but there’s something so amazing about this job that I don’t know why people even consider this a job.” “It is so much fun. I think acting is more like a job, but directing is a lot of fun. I hope I get more chances to do this. This seems like my first love,” she told the media. Kangana has been credited as co-director on the film. Jagarlamudi left the project abruptly reportedly due to creative differences with Kangana who plays the title role. Jagarlamudi has not commented on his departure, but the producers said he left the film midway as the dates clashed with his forthcoming project, a biopic on the late Telugu movie legend and politician Nandamuri Taraka Ramarao, NTR. ternational for IMDb, Neha Gureja said in an official statement, “Deepika Padukone’s strong performance in this year’s Padmaavat pushed her into the top spot on the 2018 IMDb Top Stars of Indian Cinema list,” Another statement read, “Radhika Apte delighted audiences this year, appearing in two of the IMDb Top Indian Movies of 2018 – Andhadhun (which ranked #1) and Padman (ranked #6). Shah Rukh Khan confirms Aamir Khan will play Krishna in

Mahabharata A

ctor Aamir Khan experienced disappointment this Diwali with the release of his film Thugs of Hindostan, which failed to perform well at the box office. However, it seems there is no looking back for the actor as he is working on his next, bigger project Mahabharata. The idea has been in the pipeline since long but his friend and actor Shah Rukh Khan has now confirmed that Aamir is indeed making efforts to revive it. On being asked about what kind of role he would like to play during a chat with DNA, Shah Rukh replied ‘Krishna from Mahabharata’ but went on to add “Krishna from Mahabharata has already been taken by Aamir so I will not be able to do that.” Media reports suggest that Mahabharata was to be made on a budget of around Rs 1000 crore but will now be made as a seven-part web series. Earlier, Aamir was to star in astronaut Rakesh Sharma’s biopic but forwarded the offer to Shah Rukh in order to work on his dream project. Writer Anjum Rajabali had also confirmed the same and said, “Frankly, I was very keen that Aamir should do the film. He liked the script, we discussed it a lot and we had a lot of hopes about

46

it. Unfortunately, Aamir is consumed with a larger sort of project called Mahabharat.” It has been a rough year for Aamir as Thugs of Hindostan, also starring Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh, failed to impress the audience. The actor even apologised to movie goers for

not being able to entertain them. He had said on the sidelines of an award ceremony of India’s Storytellers Script Contest, “I would like to take full responsibility for that. You can be sure that we tried our level best. There are people who have liked the film a lot and we would like to thank them. Major-

ity of the people did not like the film and we are aware of the fact. So there is no doubt that we did go wrong. I want to apologise to the viewers who came to watch my film in the theatres as I was not able to entertain them despite trying my best.” Cortsey: HT

“Feline Calicivirus & Its Effects”

I

Dr.H.BhullarDVM

52

JANUARY 2019

n the December 2018 Issue, you may have read our article on Canine Parvovirus and the key points to keep in mind towards being actively aware for your little companion at home. In this month’s edition, we will continue our discussion on various viruses to keep an eye out for, by focusing on

Feline Calicivirus. This virus is commonly seen to occur in cats and mainly affects their respiratory system. This means that you may see physical signs occur at the nose and mouth regions. Unvaccinated cats are more significantly prone to contracting this virus; therefore, vaccination against Calicivirus is strongly suggested to all cat owners. This virus can occur in a cat of any age, however, kittens older than six weeks old have been seen to show this virus more commonly. It can usually be found in multi-cat facilities, such as: shelters, multi-cat households, kitty daycares, breeding catteries or households with poor ventilation. If you suspect that your feline friend may have caught this virus, some signs to look out for are: nasal and/or eye discharge, loss of appetite, ulcers in the mouth region (on tongue, hard palate, lips) or on the tip of the nose & claws, difficulty breathing, lameness or pain seen during their walk or any sort of bleeding spotted. Cats can derive Calicivirus from other infected cats or an infected environment. This virus is known to be very persistent and is therefore hard to remove from an environment in which these infected cats may come into contact with. Your cat will especially be prone to

LIFESTYLE

sports

contracting this virus if it has not had the proper vaccination protocol for it, or has a preexisting condition or disease, which may lower its immune system and cause your pet to be more susceptible to further illness. “I feel my cat may have this condition. What can the veterinarian do about this?” If you see any of the forementioned signs appear in your feline friend, it is very important to keep him or her away from other cats and bring them to your local vet right away. Your veterinarian will perform a simple physical examination and may wish to conduct further diagnostic tests for a confirmed diagnosis, dependent on each individual case. Once confirmed, initial treatment or hospitalization may be offered, depending on the severity of the condition your cat displays. There is no specific medication for this virus, however, your vet may provide prescribed antibiotics to eliminate the chances of the disease spreading and causing further damage. Different medications may be given for specific signs your cat may be showing on an individual basis. In some cases, certain cats experience a level of pain, while eating, due to their developed mouth ulcers. In this scenario, a feeding tube may even be placed to ease discomfort for this task, until the patient is able to eat on their own once more. The management of this condition requires patience and love from the owner towards their furry companion. Proper eye and nose cleaning, applying medication and preparing a special diet may be needed. Cleaning all the surfaces in your household, with extra care, is advised when bringing your cat home after hospitalization. This is important, especially if there are other cats in the household. The vaccination for this virus does not eliminate it entirely, however, it is the best tool an owner can provide to help prevent their cat from experiencing Calicivirus. The vaccination booster series are given to kittens and then administered every year as adults.

Disha Patani’s

Remarkable Dedication On The Sets Of Bharat

D

isha Patani, who was taking gymnastic lessons to perform the stunts of the film, sprained her knees earlier. Once again Disha had to meet with an injury in her leg while the actual shoot was going on. While filming for a stunt scene she met with an injury. Disha did not stop there, she had completed her shoot that too with three retakes till the time it was perfect. Everyone on the set was impressed by her dedication but they were also advising her to take it easy. After that, a doctor was kept as a standby to ensure that the injury didn’t get worse. In fact, Disha opted to perform the required stunts and refused a body double. As a trapeze artist, she has performed some high octane action sequences in a circus set up and also shot for some risky scenes involving fire. The actress underwent rigorous training and

followed strict routines. To prepare for her role, she practiced drop kicking and added pilates and parkour to her regular workout routine that already included Mixed Martial Arts. Time and again Disha has been treating her fans with the insights into the practices as she preps for her role. Disha is working hard for all of her acts and so the actress has earned many accolades and has become a prominent name in the industry in the short span of time. Disha shared, “The year 2018 has been great for me. I have always been fond of working in action-packed films and luckily both my films this year have fulfilled my wishes.” After the back to back success of M.S. Dhoni and Baaghi 2, which raked more than 100 crores at the box office, Disha Patani will be seen next in Bharat along with Salman Khan. Cortsey: BUSINESSOFCINEMA

Small Bathroom Decorating Ideas

Bathroom Makeovers for Renters

After perusing umpteen photos of dreamy bathrooms with fancy faucets, gorgeous tile, and of course storage galore, it’s pretty easy to hate the old, cramped washroom in your rental (thank you and damn you Pinterest and Instagram). But you don’t have to continue living with awful. Trust us: With your landlord’s permission a few simple changes, no renovation required, will make things better without draining your checking account — And lucky for you, we have no shortage of tricks for adding color, pattern, and even practical storage. Here are 21 decorating ideas for refreshing small bathrooms.

Paint-Free Bathroom Makeover If your landlord prohibits painting or if you think the task is too messy, then it’s time to get creative with peel and stick vinyl. Options that stand up to moisture and condensation work best in bathrooms. This vanity update by Brian Patrick Flynn is a fantastic example. The gray leather veneer is actually (surprise!) removable, vinyl wallpaper. There are other types of peel and stick products available that make bathroom decorating super easy. For instance, you can duplicate the striped bathroom wall shared here using self-adhesive vinyl stripes. A favorite is Tempaper Mini Stripes. It’s available in four inch wide rolls.

Install a Temporary Vanity

Can’t stand that old oak cabinet in your bathroom? Or maybe you wish your wallmounted sink had built-in storage? Whatever the case, consider swapping it out with a vanity suited for your taste and needs. When your lease is up, take it with you. Just get your landlord’s written consent before installing. New vanities like the IKEA GODMORGON / BRÅVIKEN that sells for $329 come with a sink and cabinet. Some different options sold at major home improvement stores also include a faucet. One example designed for small spaces is the Maelynn by Home Decorators Collection for $209. This bathroom vanity tutorial by Hej shares how to install.

Spruce Up Your Bathroom With Plants Add a punch of pizzazz to a lackluster bathroom by heading out to your local garden center. A few houseplants suited to your bathroom’s unique conditions (think natural light and room temperature) will brighten the space with color and texture.

Refresh an Outdated Bathroom With Paint

When it comes to decorating, paint is a silver bullet for ugly. Here its magical powers turned a beige builder grade bathroom into a chic powder room. But our favorite idea from this transformation from The Makerista has nothing to do with painting. See the lovely round mirror?

DIY a Rustic Feature Wall

What to do with that big bare wall? Turn it into a snappy feature with removable peel and stick floor tile. You’ll need to use the vinyl stuff that stands up to water and humidity. Home Depot and Lowes offer different options in a wide range of textures, colors, and sizes that resemble real wood and luxurious stone.

Why you should practice

Pranayama every day

P

ranayama is a practice that dwells into giving energy to every cell of our body. It is a Sanskrit word which means ‘mastery of life force’ or quite literally, to draw out life force or the breath that sustains our body. It may seem simple, but includes regular training. According to yogic science, the aim of Pranayama is to regulate and guide the life force. It typically includes the practice of correct breathing. Since Pranayama requires you to breathe right, it involves all body parts. This means that fresh oxygen reaches every organ of your body. Regular practice of Pranayama has the following benefits: 1. It is known to purify as many as 80,000 nerves in the body. Since it balances out the energy flow of the body, Pranayama is known to affect our overall well-being. There are many health as well medical practitioners that recommend the practice daily. It is said that this consistent practice brings with it a steady mind and a disease-free body. 2. M any have dismissed yoga for ‘just another meditation practice’; however, Pranayama is a practice that can help you achieve physical fitness. Since, oxygen is reaching all your organs, it balances digestive system and gives a natural glow to your skin. It is known to increase vitality of a person. 3. P ranayama also builds mental health when it comes to concentration, memory and stress reduction. Our mind is a powerful tool that can guide what our entire day will look like. It helps bring serenity to our mental nerves as it increases oxygen supply in the body. This means that blood circulation increases and helps the mind to relieve stress. 4. F or those suffering with high blood pressure problems, Pranayama is an ideal practice for them. Since blood pressure spikes at an increased speed in this condition, it helps bringing this sudden rush in control. Since Pranayama is a meditative state, it calms body and in turn releases hormones that relax the body completely. Along with blood pressure, severe issues like diabetes and depression can also be helped with the regular practice. 5. M any studies have proven that Pranayama can increase life span of a person. This is because it helps a person to breathe systematically. The main problem with many of us is how we breathe. According to yogic philosophy, “our longevity depends on our breathing rate.” 6. P ranayama is great for those who want to lose weight. This is because it helps you in taking control of your body. When we start practicing it regularly, our craving for many foods decreases as it starts eliminating the imbalances in our body. When our body is in a tired, fatigued state, we tend to eat unhealthy foods. However, practicising Pranayama balances and increase our awareness towards the food that we consume. How to do Pranayama: 1. S it in a cross-legged position on your yoga matt/ folded sheet. 2. C lose your right nostril with your thumb. 3. I nhale from your left nostril. Remember to keep your back straight, body relaxed and the left hand on your left knee. 4. N ext, close your left nostril with your ring finger of your right hand, and then release breath from the right nostril. 5. R epeat the same for 15 minutes. Take a break every 5 minutes, if needed. ctor Emily Blunt says she is open to reprising her role of Mary Poppins for another film. The 35-year-old actor has taken on the iconic role in Disney’s latest film Mary Poppins Returns, which is a direct sequel to the 1964 original. In an interview with CBS, Blunt said like most superhero films, Mary Poppins Return should also get a sequel. “If Mary Poppins is a superhero, most superheroes have sequels,” Blunt said.

When asked whether she would reprise the role in another film, the actor replied, “Yes. I want to be her again. I like being her.” She also described the character as “completely bizarre and unknowable”. Directed by Rob Marshall, Mary Poppins Returns also features Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer and Julie Walters. The film releases in India on January 4, 2019. Cortsey: IANS
