Kal Dosanjh A Bold And Dutiful Senior Cop
By: Prof. Surinder Shaun Kochhar LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM (A freelance writter with 36 Year Exp.)
A
s I waited for this personality from Law Enforcement, with bated breath at a local eatery, scores of thoughts flashed on the prism of my mind as I encapsulated the risky job profile of a police officer, and how they touch our lives. Suddenly, I saw a quick footed, musclebound six foot man in his youth, with a fearless gait, justifying the aura of a UFC champion, rushing towards me.During my preliminary confabulations, I found him at ease for a welcoming interface. He seemed to fight for the needy and dared to win lock, stock and barrel. At the very onset, this Canadianborn 40 years young jatt putter, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology, turned out to be witty, jovial and passionate. He romances with risks so that others can breathe easy in the air of uncertainty bedecked with harrowing moments. When asked, why he chose this risky injury prone profession, pat came wih the reply,“For me Loyalty, Integrity, Fairness, excellence is a way of life. That is why I am madly in love with this job -my first love. It is the duty of the youth to pummel crime out at every level. Peace comes at a price. I am really lucky to serve the community”. To serve the community is what makesl ife interesting, exciting, enjoyable and worth living for this beloved police officer. Excuse me at the risk of pampering this gentleman, as I venture to write that this man is made of different stuff. He is most respected among his peers and the general public. A call for immediate help from 911 sets him, like other Law Enforcement personnel, in motion. Tearing down the road in his shrieking car, amidst obliging traffic, a savior is out to help many, out of life-threatening situations. In his profession, moments count . Every day is a gift from God for us. Every day brings a new challenge on the job for a police officer. A fair, firm or flexible approach guides him to cater to the dignity and respect of the residents and do justice to his job profile. Daily, he is found doling out justice to his multi-risk and multi-task assignments with nearly no input of the danger involved in a good number of cases. The hands that tot the guns and the minds that plot massacres are the staple customers of this peace loving personality. Experience speaks and leads him into daily assignments. Over
40 awards decorate the wall of this brave officer and community activist, which give him a sense of satisfaction. Kids Play Foundation This Police Officer, who brings havoc to perpetrators/wrong doers,is blessed with a golden heart. To serve the community better, he thought to catch the attention of the pre-teens and young adults and prepare them to stay away from crime, violence, gangs and drugs. He went back a little to leap forward. Resultantly, last year, he started a new non-profit organisation named Kids Play as a promoter and CEO along with his spouse Sandy who is an active Director since inception. It will not be out of place to mention that Kal was ably supported by ArjanBhullar, promoter and CFO of the Kids Play Foundation. He is a pride of Canada . His biggest achievement is that he won a Bronze Medal in 2012 London Olympic Games. He is first Canadian of Indian descent having done this charisma. Over 8000 young kids have benefitted from this so far. He feels that these innocent souls [kids], are like a white cloth. He wants to give them the color of sincerity, honesty, hard work, and a crime-free life. He has faith in his philanthropic work and believes that faith can move mountains. Presently working as a Senior Detective, his idea of relaxation is to work on his fitness and spending time with his family - wife Sandy Dosanjh, daughter Afsana and son Roshan. Kal is the end product of a dream his parents had, circa 48 years back. They made forays to make Canada their permanent place of living, so that their kids could be in the Land of Opportunity and dare to win. Community service is in Kal’s blood. He tried his hand in the last City of Surrey elections, and missed it with a narrow margin. Kal is serving on various boards, which includes / has included SOAR Philanthropic Society, BC Human Rights Coalition, Odd Squad Productions Society, Sahara Services Society, and the Junior Chamber of Commerce I hope a better future awaits this noble soul so that he can serve the community better,as success favors a ‘sELF-lESS gIVER’.

Mortgage insurance:
Protect your most important investment
I
f you have a mortgage on your home, there is a chance that you have mortgage insurance. The main objective of mortgage insurance to protect your most important asset. This becomes an absolute necessary for unforeseen emergency such as you become seriously ill or die before paying off the mortgage, the coverage will help to pay off your mortgage. It helps in offering peace of mind and also reassures that your family will continue to feel secure and safe in your own home. Inevitable situation can strike anyone anytime, then why take a chance ?
Buying an insurance policy that really protects you There are many terms and exclusions associated with mortgage insurance policies. Learn thoroughly what they mean and how they apply to you. You should call an insurance company directly (NOT the bank that sold you the coverage) for clarification about pre-existing medical conditions. Call your doctor to clarify details of any pre-existing medical conditions that you might be concerned about. You have time to review. You usually have 10-30 days to review your policy after the initial purchase (this is known as a “cool-down” or “free look” period). If you have already purchased your mortgage insurance you can cancel anytime. Keep in mind, however, that you may lose premiums already paid. Always shop around. Before buying a policy shop around for the lowest rates with best

coverage. Consider buying mortgage insurance from a licensed insurance broker who will explore any medical issues upfront. You should also consider buying or topping up an individual life insurance policy to cover your mortgage. Know your coverage. You may already have adequate insurance coverage through your work or other policies.
Insurance experts say it’s better to buy one traditional insurance policy than purchase a number of small policies for a variety of products. Be sure you need it. The purpose of credit life mortgage insurance is to protect your loved ones from making mortgage payments if something happens to you. This type of insurance may not be applicable if you do not have any dependents whom you would like t protect financially if something happens to you.

illstream DiabeticFriendly Flour: This unique combination of Whole Wheat, Black Chana, Bajra, Soya, Flax helps to slow down the release of Glucose into the blood thus
keeping the blood sugar level under control. Why Whole Wheat, Black Chana & Bajra? Because fiber delays sugar absorption. Increase intake of fiber in your diet as it delays sugar
beans, peas, cabbage, guava, figs, pomegranate, figs etc. Why Soya? Soy lowers blood sugar. Soya has been shown to make cells more responsive to insulin. While eating soy, insulin resistance improved and blood sugar and cholesterol levels are better.
absorption, helping to control blood glucose levels in a better way. Foods high in fiber include whole grain breads, cereals, brown rice, chickpeas, kidney

Why Flax Meal? Because Flax is high in Omega-3 & Omega-6 acids. The essential fatty acids also affect the ability of the body’s cells to respond to insulin. The more Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are in the cell membranes of adult diabetics, the more their tissues respond to insulin. Populations that eat a lot of fish containing omega-3 fatty acids, such as tuna, salmon, and mackerel, have lower rates of type 2 diabetes compared with those who eat less fish. Things like flax seeds, pumpkin seeds and walnuts are high in omega-3 fatty acids.

Grand opening
@ansalmedia
of warranty-approved OIL CHANGE store by Mr. Lube
T
here is no longer a need to wait long for a warrantyapproved oil change at the dealership anymore. Mr. Lube has just opened a brand new oil change and car maintenance store, located at 520 SE Marine Drive between Fraser and Main, with excellent customer service from certified technicians. On June 4, Red FM was live-on-location celebrating the store’s grand opening by giving away exciting prizes, including 2 IPads. Customers visiting the new store were also rewarded with exclusive grand opening savings, including 25% off any warranty-approved oil change AND a FREE $10 Esso car wash gift card. Additionally, the management and staff were on-site interacting with customers and providing them with free refreshments and BBQ’d snacks.
Some more about Mr. Lube!
Mr. Lube is Canada’s number one warranty-approved oil change service provider for all makes and models. Since 1976, they originated the idea of convenient automotive services with no appointment needed. With 170 locations across Canada, Mr. Lube is known for providing excellent customer care and experience. This year, Mr. Lube is celebrating 40 years of being Canada’s warranty-approved oil changing expert and currently has 15 stores in the Greater Vancouver Area.
What special about the store?
4The technicians will give your car a free top-up of fluids and a courtesy safety-inspection to check your headlights, battery and other parts of your car to make sure everything is in order. They do this for free with every service. 4The store is clean and brand new, along with everything in it. When you pull into the store, you don’t even have to leave your car. You’ll be greeted at your window and offered a free newspaper, complimentary coffee and given a price menu. 4They’re open 7 days a week, until 8pm weeknights. There is no appointment needed, so you can stop in anytime for quick service that fits your schedule. Mr. Lube also offers maintenance services like radiator service, which is great to think about with the summer months around the corner. The last thing you want is a clogged cooling system to damage your engine. • Owner’s Manuals for all makes & models of cars, so they have your car’s information at their fingertips. Not only that, they track your car’s service history so next time you’re in they’ll know the status of your car, just like a doctors file. Information is shared on a screen, where it shows if you’re overdue, close to due or up to date on specific services recommended by your car’s manufacturer.

Kidsplay organise a youth gang and violence prevention forum at abbotsford
KidsPlay is premised on providing underprivileged youth with positive alternatives in a sincere attempt to steer them away from a life of drugs, gangs and crime. The genesis of the Kidsplay Drug and Gang forums is predicated on Kal Dosanjh’s law enforcement experience in the Downtown Eastside. After multiple observations of youth engaging in the open air drug market of the downtown Eastside, DOSANJH designed educational programs for youth who came from marginalized lower socio economic backgrounds, as well as youth most susceptible to entering a criminal lifestyle. The Abbotsford Gang and Youth Violence forum provided educational insight delivered by top key note speakers, who serve as professionals within their respective organizations. The speakers included members of Crimestoppers BC, YO BRO youth initiative, Kaka Canadian, Dr. Kapoor, Gurkirat Sandhu. They provided powerful narratives, accentuating the dangers associated with a drug and gang lifestyle. Approximating 400 Abbotsford residents attended the event. $4000’dollars worth of scholarships were distributed to the students who attended. Kidsplay believes that Sports and education give youth qualities such as self respect, confidence, but most importantly, a sense of dignity.

seva thrift:charity store
S
URREY, B.C. (July 2nd, 2016) – SEVA Thrift is teaming up with East West Thrift store to open a first of its kind store for charity by offering gently used Indian ethnic wear and many diverse range of high quality items. Seva Thrift is accepting gently used ethnic wear, clothing, and small functional household items. Our goal is to resell these items and contribute to the Surrey Hospital Foundation in a meaningful way. Sale Proceeds of this store will contribute towards valuable funds for Surrey Hospital and Outpatient Care Foundation which will support worthwhile medical equipment and services. Seva Thrift provides the venue for sharing while giving back to the community. We need to send the following message out to the public for SEVA Thrift Store: DONATE, VOLUNTEER, AND BUY.
Store Information: Opening Date: July 2, 2016 Store: East West Thrift Store Address: 9430 120th Street, Surrey, BC Hours: Monday to Saturday 10 AM to 5:30 PM Phone: 778 293-0015 DONATE Donations welcome and encouraged. To make a donation, drop off items to 9430 120th Street, Surrey during the hours of operation. We accept the following: • Stitched or unstitched Indian clothing (3 piece outifits [salwar/ kameez/chunni ] outfits, saris,

OUR INSPIRATION We are a practical group. Our inspiration comes from recognizing many people have an abundance of items and are not sure what to do with them, once they are no longer needed or wanted. With that in mind, we have created Seva Thrift, a platform for donating gently used Indian and Western clothing that can be sold to support charitable causes. Our charity of choice is the Surrey Hospital
and Outpatient Centre Foundation who support both Surrey Memorial Hospital and the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre. As we clean our closets and delve into our basements and attics, we reflect on the potential wastage and then embrace in the opportunity to share. In a world driven by consumerism we tend to fill up our homes with various things over time. At Seva Thift we Rethink, Repurpose so you can Reuse. VOLUNTEERS Volunteers are at the core of what we do. Without volunteers we are not able to provide this valuable service to the community. We currently have a committed group of volunteers who work in a supportive, fun, team environment. If you are willing to give your time (4 hours a week) and have a little fun while giving back to the community, we would love to hear from you. Please contact us at: 604 765-2000.

Forgetfulness - How much is normal? By: Prof. Surinder Shaun Kochhar LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM (A freelance writter with 36 Year Exp.)
A
ge is the biggest enemy of good health. Can we stop aging? The answer is NO. Can we age gracefully? The answer is YES. One of the most common problems with aging is we start forgetting. Everyone is facing it. Though it is normal to forget things from time to time, and it’s normal to become somewhat more forgetful with thage, yet how much forgetfulness is normal or too much? How can you judge whether your memory lapses are within the scope of normal aging or are a symptom of something more serious? Healthy people can experience memory loss or memory distortion at any age. Experts say that memory loss is progressive and it can start after 45 years of age and ramp up even more after 60 years. Types of memory Forgetfulness is linked with memory. Let’s understand memory first. Human memory is a three way process namely:Sensory memory is an ultra-short-term memory which degrades very quickly- typically in the region of 200 - 500 milliseconds (1/5 1/2 second) after the perception of an item. It retains impressions of sensory information after the original stimuli or event has ended. It acts as a kind of a buffer for stimuli received through the five senses i.e Vision, Hearing, Smell, Taste and Touch. Indeed, it lasts for such a short time that it is often considered part of the process of perception, For example, the ability to look at a Car Garage door coming down to lock within just a second of observation is an example of sensory memory. If one does not lock the image ofthe garage door coming down consciously,at least for 8 seconds, through our vision, then our senses deliberately ignore the information and we are not sure that garage has been locked properlyor not. And then we need to recheck it. 2) Short-Term Memory Do you frequently forget why you walked into a room? You may be dealing with short-term memory loss. Short-term memory,or working memory, often acts as a rough paper pad for the temporary recall of the information. It can be referred to as the Brain’s Post-it Note. It helps to hold information (typically around 7 items or even less) in the mind in an active, readily-available state for a short period of time (typically from 10 to 15 seconds, or sometimes up to a minute). However, this information will quickly disappear unless we make an immediate conscious effort to retain it, as long-term memory by, for example, mentally repeating it. Experts say that we can store 7 pieces of information in our short-term memory, give or take 2. To improve our short term memory we need to chunk the information. Chunking is the organization of material into shorter meaningful groups to make them more manageable. For example, a hyphenated phone number, split into groups of 3 or 4 digits, seems to be easier
to remember than a single long number. The use of mnemonicscan significantly increase memory, particularly the recall of long lists of names, numbers, etc. Mnemonics is the study and development of systems for improving and assisting the memory. For example, suppose, a person has diabetes and wants to take care of three things on daily basis. He can make a mnemonic MED to remember the things to do on a daily basis to control the diseasei.e.M stands for medicine, E for exercise and D for diet. 3) Long term memory Long-term memory is intended for storage of information over a long period of time. Despite our everyday impressions of forgetting, it seems likely that long-term memory actually declines very little over time, and can store a seemingly unlimited amount of information almost indefinitely. It will not be out of place to mention that among experts, there is some debate as to whether we actually ever “forget” anything at all, or whether it just becomes increasingly difficult to access or retrieve certain items from memory. However, some of these memory lapses or flaws become more noticeable with age, but — unless they affect us in activities of daily living and prove to be persistent — they are not considered indicators of memory-impairing illnesses primarily Alzheimer’s [a form of Dementia]. Your short-term memory works like your computer’s random access memory (RAM), which provides working space for short computations. Your long-term memory is like your computer’s hard drive where data is stored permanently. Unlike short-term memory, long-term memory can store an indefinite amount of information, potentially for a lifetime. The Following are the normal memory problems every one experience at a later stage of life: Blocking Blocking is when someone asks you a question and the answer is right on the tip of your tongue — you know that you know it, but it is not coming up. This is perhaps the most familiar example of blocking, the temporary inability to retrieve a memory. In many cases, the barrier is a memory similar to the one you’re looking for, and you retrieve the wrong one. This competing memory is so intrusive that you can’t bring forth the memory you want. Scientists think that memory blocks become more common with age and that they account for the trouble elders have remembering other people’s names. Research shows that people are able to retrieve about half of the blocked memories within just a minute.
Absentmindedness This type of forgetting occurs when you don’t pay close enough attention. You forget where you just put your pen because you didn’t focus on where you put it in the first place. You were thinking of something else (or, perhaps, nothing in particular), so your brain didn’t encode the information securely. Absentmindedness also involves forgetting to do something at a prescribed time, like missing a dose of your medicine or failing to keep an appointment. Transience Transience means lasting only for a short period of time. The short term memory has a use-it-or-lose-it quality.Memories that we call up and use regularly or frequently are least likely to be forgotten. Brain specialists regard it as favorable because it clears the brain of unused or unwanted memories, making way for newer and more useful ones. The short term memory which we do not use is lost into oblivion. Contd. in next issue

amrit pure basmati rice
asmati Rice only 1% production of the total rice grown in India. This rice is different from other rice mainly due to the aroma and elongation post cooking. Basmati rice has been reported in India since the early 19th century though it may have been named differently. `Bas` in Hindi language means `aroma`and `Mati` means `full` of hence the word Basmati i.e. full of aroma. Each grain of aged basmati rice on cooking, separates out and gives a delightful taste. It is truly an Indian delicacy. Amrit Basmati is a specially bred variety of basmati rice with all the great Indian traditional taste but with lower glycemic index value. Lower (GI) foods are good for diabetic patients to help control thier blood suger levels through diet. Accroding to the American Diabetes Association: the glycemic index, or GI, measures Carbohydrate how a Carbohydratecontaining food raises blood glucose. Foods are ranked based on how they compare to a reference food-either glucose or white bread. A food with a high GI raises blood glucose more than a food with a medium or low GI. Meal planning with the GI involves choosing foods that have alow or medium GI. If eating a food with a high GI, you can combine it with low GI foods to help balance the meal. SALT TO EAT OR NOT TO EAT Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC
W
e are cautious of a lot of white ingredients in our diet especially the Punjabi’s When I say white it means Sugar, While flour, too much milk product & Salt The traditional dictum was to eat between 1500 mg to 2300 mg of Sodium as advised by various health organizations in North America which included American Heart Association,Heart & Stroke foundation etc
While a person with high BP these guidelines are very relevant but how about most of us who’s BP is normal.Do we have to restrict Sodium in our diet to this Extent ? In Lancet a recent Study published looked in to this question and suggested that for a Normal person with no High BP actually Low Sodium may cause body harm Now let us see our Table salt in our home, It has 40% Sodium & 60% Chloride There fore One teaspoon of Table salt will have about 2000 mg Sodium The people with high BP are about 29%. For them lifestyle change, medication & salt restriction are essential But for the rest 71% people with normal BP low salt diet may actually do more harm than good, Moderation in salt use was advised Contrary to popular thought, maintaining a
low-sodium diet may not be beneficial to one’s health. According to a recently published study, cutting down your daily salt intake could actually be harmful to your body. A recent global study conducted by researchers of the Population Health Research Institute of McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences found low-sodium diets actually increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and death compared to diets with average sodium consumption. Dr Andrew Mente of McMaster University was the Lead Author, He says Salt is an essential nutrient and is needed by the body, said Mente, a principal investigator of the Population Health Research Institute and an associate professor of clinical epidemiology and biostatistics at McMaster’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine in Hamilton. According to the study, a high-sodium diet is only linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in populations of people with high blood pressure. For people with a normal blood pressure, the study found a high-sodium diet was not associated with cardiovascular disease. The study involved more than 130,000 people from 49 countries. It looked specifically at how the relationship between sodium intake and heart disease, stroke and death differed in people with high blood pressure as compared to those with normal blood pressure. Mente said that over the past five years numerous studies have revealed the dangers of low-sodium diets. This newest study at McMaster just confirms what the latest research has shown, he said. “It appears that low sodium truly is harmful and we need to be cautious before recommending low levels for the entire population,” he said. The current guidelines from Health Canada call for people to cut their salt intake to less than 2.3 grams per day, but Mente said these levels are too low. “The current guidelines need to be updated to reflect contemporary research,” he said To Live s proper life we need Balance of Body , Mind & Soul

novel WRITTEN BY .....PROF AVTAR SINGH VIRDI
I
was getting married in Marvelous Banquet Hall of Ludhiana, India. Because of the 1st week of November, it was neither hot nor cold. Sam was a handsome boy from Canada. Moreover, I was twenty three and Sam was twenty seven years old. I was not getting married to an old man. My match had come to marry me. “Budhe Canada de India ch ghorhi charde (pretty old men from Canada marry young girls in India), a funny song by Gurpreet Ghuggi was coming to my mind. I was feeling proud of my luck. All were saying that the bride looked like a piece of shining moon. My so-called Bhua (Maternal aunt) who lived in Surrey, had brought me this nuptial tie. She knew the groom’s mom and his whole family for the last fifteen years. She also knew us well how nice we all were. I wanted to become a teacher, but my parents had compelled me to take nursing course, as there was a huge demand for nurses in Canada. After completion of my nursing course, my aunt arranged my engagement and marriage in a flash. My marriage was solemnised among great celebrations. My in-laws were also from Ludhiana. It was only about one-

A Girl in a Whirl hour drive by car from our house to theirs. It was Sam’s parental house where his chacha, chachi (father’s younger brother and his wife) and their children were living. Our marriage reception party continued until about 2 A.M. We were to go to Shimla on our honeymoon the next morning. Sam was very happy with his friends. None of them was stopping from dancing. The DJ was playing hit songs one after another. Meenu, my younger sister, and I were avid listeners of Punjabi and Hindi songs. We also used to watch TV programs and movies with great passion. I was extremely happy that day. I was feeling like dancing and showing my best to all. Gosh!... It wasn’t my day. I had danced with Sam just once and that too shyly. All of a sudden, I started feeling very sleepy. My mom saw me dozing and she, along with my mother-in-law, brought me to my in-laws’. They also dropped Meenu to stay with me there. I lay on the bed and fell asleep in a jiffy. My friends and I were performing gidha and singing folk songs so-called, Punjabi bollian, on the college stage. “Bari barsi Khatan gaya si khat ke leyande chaull Mera mahi kala – vekh penn menu haull…”, One of my teammates sang and others joined the course with full zeal.
“Bari barsi Khatan gaya si khat ke leyande dhagge Mera chann mahi – filmi hero lagge…”, I sang and my teammates joined the course with full enthusiasm. Our Gidha was at its peak. “Sonia, get up.”, my mother-in-laws woke me up and left. I got up in a shock. I had had so sound and a carefree sleep that never ever had I had before. “O’ my god! How lovely dream I was enjoying!”, I whispered to myself. “Get ready to go on your honeymoon, didi. Don’t say today – I don’t care.”, Meenu, lying beside me, whispered in my ear. And I ran to the washroom bashfully to get fresh. Actually I had got a habit to utter often - I don’t care. My family members and friends had compelled me to quit that habit by teasing and torturing me mentally. Though Meenu was six years younger than me, she, being jolly, was pretty frank with me. However, I was a bit shy. We both sisters loved each other very much. Our only bother, being very dear to everyone and seven years younger than me, was a bit quarrelsome. He had a good repertoire of jokes. He entertained us with his crackers a lot last night.

ultan is an upcoming 2016 Indian sports-drama film directed by Ali Abbas Zafar. Produced by Aditya Chopra under Yash Raj Films banner, the film stars Salman Khan and Anushka Sharma in pivotal roles and centers around Sultan Ali Khan (Salman Khan), a wrestler who has problems in his professional and personal life. From a small town wrestler in Haryana, Sultan achieves global fame winning bouts at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, the 2011 FILA Wrestling World Championships in Istanbul and the 2012 London Olympics. The CBFC panel that saw the film is said to have been super impressed by the film’s content and performances and hence cleared the film immediately

without demanding a single cut in the film. Now that for sure is some brilliant news for all Salman fans that have been waiting with bated breath for the film to hit the screens this Eid. Looks like Salman and his fans have already got their Eidi from the Censor Board. On the one hand, while the actor has been heavily criticised for his ‘raped woman’ comment, on the other, CBFC’s decision would give him some respite and a reason to rejoice. Time for some celebrations at the Khan-daan! Salman Khan has created quite a buzz with his role in his upcoming film, ‘Sultan.’ While Salman Khan Movies are said to be all about peppy numbers and smart one-liners, with his recent films he has

broken the stereotype. In an interaction with TOI. com, the director of Sultan, Ali Abbas said, “The aim is that audience should find a new Salman Khan in ‘Sultan.’ The idea is that he can do all this, which lot of people think that Salman Khan Movies are all about - dance and songs and everything. I think he already pushed the bracket with ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan.’ We hope that when people come out of Sultan they say that there is a new Salman Khan in Sultan.” When asked about Anushka’s role in the movie, he quipped, “The girl in the film is very much like today’s girl. She has a point of view about life, she represents the strong segment of Indian women and what Indian women stand for.”

Why is there a surge of children needing braces? Have you ever heard the following: Why do kids these days need braces, we never had any problems? Dr. Vishal Sharma, BSc, DDS, Cert. Ortho. FRCD(C), FCDS (BC)
Certified Specialist in Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics
T
his by far is the most common question that a parent asks during an orthodontic visit at Aura Orthodontics. It is usually followed by “If I have good teeth, what happened to my children?” Let me just preface this by saying the answer is not straight forward because there are several factors that determine how our teeth look and why braces are needed. The following will explain some of those different factors and the roles they play in answering this question. Let’s begin with the nature versus nurture debate. The nature part of this discussion is our genetics that we receive from our parents and the nurture part is the environment that we are brought up in. For genetics, a large part of the way we look, including our teeth is determined by our parents – regardless of what the problem is - if our parents had crooked teeth, an overbite, an underbite, spacing or crowding – then we will most likely have the same problem. If our parents don’t have any of these problems, then neither should we, right? Not necessarily… This is where the nurture part of the discussion comes into play. When I say environment, I don’t mean the trees, the land or the weather. I am talking about the factors that we expose our teeth to on a daily basis – the oral environment. For example, our dietary habits, which include sugary foods like candy and soda, our brushing habits, and fluoridated water to name a few of the important ones. In some areas of the world, people have fluoridated drinking water - which means fluoride is put into their water. At very low levels, fluoride has been proven to help prevent cavities. When we don’t have fluoride in our water (like in Vancouver, Surrey, Delta or Abbotsford) – this preventative effect is not there. Additionally, many children these days are exposed to a diet high in refined sugar, with lots of sticky foods. These sticky sugars constantly ‘attack’
the baby teeth and create large cavities. This poor diet, in combination with poor brushing habits and low fluoridation can lead to large cavities, which then require big fillings or an early removal of baby teeth. Baby teeth are important for many reasons – one of which is holding space for our adult teeth. When baby teeth are lost early, the adult teeth lose their ‘guide’ and they erupt into the mouth in a variety of different positions. The bad news is that this is one of the main reasons we see crowding in our kids today – because of early loss of baby teeth. The good news is that this problem is easily prevented with less sugar and better brushing. When baby teeth are lost early – it is very important to see your orthodontist to maintain space for adult teeth. This is why at Aura Orthodontics, we recommend that a child’s first screening be completed by age seven. On another note, if you look back by 40 or 50 years – how many people had braces? The obvious answer is not that many. Next ask yourself, how many of your grandparents have dentures?–Is it accurate to say that probably quite a few. Braces do not necessarily prevent dentures. However, it has been proven that orthodontically straightened teeth have a much better chance of lasting a patient’s life. Straighter teeth have several benefits that allow us to maintain them for the long term. For example, they are easier to clean, which helps to prevent cavities. Additionally, straight teeth can help maintain bone support. If teeth are crooked, biting causes an unhealthy transfer of force to the bone. In fact, the teeth and bone have a very close relationship, similar to that of a fencepost and the ground. Imagine a fencepost in the ground. If you hit the fencepost on its side with a hammer ten times a day, eventually the fencepost will tilt over and fall. Also, the ground
that was supporting the fencepost will be soft and become weakened. The same is true with crooked teeth - the bone will become weakened after years of unhealthy forces and teeth can become loose. Oppositely, if you hit the fencepost on its top, it will not damage the post or the ground. The same is true for straight teeth when they transfer healthy forces to the bone.Overall, for this reason straighter teeth tend to last longer. Today, braces are far more socially accepted than they were in the past. Again, think back to 20 to 30 years ago and imagine how many people had braces. The fact is that it was not that common back then. With recent advances in technology, treatment is much easier – smaller braces, clear braces, Invisalign and other totally clear options. And as a result, braces are becoming more and more common. This is true for both children and adults. Additionally, more kids these days receive orthodontic treatment because it is becoming less socially acceptable to have crooked teeth. Unfortunately we see this all too often at Aura Orthodontics where a young child is ashamed to smile because of their teeth. It is sad but true that in schools, on playgrounds, in offices and social circles people are ridiculed for crooked teeth. Braces are simply becoming more accepted than crooked teeth because they are considered a proactive approach to treating crooked teeth. This leads us to our last reason. As individuals, we all want to achieve our highest potential. Reaching this level requires hard work, determination, confidence and self-esteem. We must perceive ourselves positively if we are to attain this level of accomplishment. As I have seen in my patients, the transformation from low self-esteem and confidence to high self-esteem and confidence after treatment – is priceless. To be able to smile without fear of ridicule, to be able to express oneself and to feel confident is important for children and adults alike. With braces becoming more widely accepted, it is what makes transformations like this possible. To summarize all the points that we discussed; we are seeing braces more often these days for the following seven reasons: 1. P oor diet and brushing habits can lead to an early loss of baby teeth. 2. M ost families delay the first orthodontic consultation until a child is in their teens, which is far too late. The first orthodontic screening should be completed by no later than age seven. 3. O rthodontically straightened teeth are much easier to maintain and therefore remain longer in the mouth. Overall, this adds to the list of benefits and reasons why one should pursue orthodontic treatment. 4. S ocially, braces are more widely accepted than ever before. So much so, that in some instances, having braces is more acceptable than having crooked teeth. 5. N ew technology has improved the appearance of braces (i.e. smaller, more aesthetic, clear treatment options). 6. O rthodontic treatment has a positive effect on confidence, self-esteem, and personality development. 7. S traighter teeth are more aesthetically pleasing.

Happy couples: ip healthy h s n o ti la e r r u o How to keep y
By: Prof. Surinder Shaun Kochhar LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM (A freelance writter with 36 Year Exp.)
“Flatter me, and I may not believe you. Criticize me, and I may not like you. Ignore me, and I may not forgive you. Encourage me, and I will not forget you. Love me and I may be forced to love you” ----William Arthur Ward
C
aring and lovable relationships are important for our well-being and happiness. Yet, it is abundantly clear that relationships aren’t always easy in the light of the fact that more than one person is involved. If the wavelength of both parties matches, the relationship continues to breathe. The testimony to a good relationship is when someone accepts your past, supports your present, encourages your future-with enthusiasm, and celebrates your success with heart-felt pleasure. Such a relationshipis neighbor’s envy and partner’s pride. A true happy couple relationship exists when they talk like best friends, play like kids, argue like husband and wife and protect each other from the world, like a mother protects the child. When caught on the wrong foot one should apologize
and the other should forgive. Although forgiveness does not change the past, it does enhance the future. Where there are human beings, there are human weaknesses. People, who join hands, may come from different strata of society. They may have mutually exclusive styles of thinking hemmed with high or super high egos. My heart comes into my mouth when my mind processes the recent stat that more than 40 percent of new marriages are ending in divorce. Love marriages are failing apart more than arranged marriages. Perhaps, may be, in arranged marriages, the marriage bond is between two families. Though I am in favor of the fact that bride and groom must primarily consent to the decision, yet being inexperienced their impulsive decision is always fraught with risk and uncertainty. Occasional fighting or a difference of opinion between a husband and a wife is normal. But it should not be allowed to graduate into a war of attrition. The need of the hour is to address it. There are steps a couple can take to keep romantic
partnerships in good working order. Talk Frankly It’s important to talk about more than just parenting and maintaining the household. Try to spend a few minutes each day,or week, discussing deeper or more personal subjects to stay connected to your partner over the long term. That means you shouldn’t avoid bringing up difficult subjects. Keeping concerns or problems to oneself results in resentment. When discussing tough topics, though, it pays to be cool, calm, composed and collected. Experts say that a good communication style is more important than commitment levels, personality traits or stressful life events in predicting whether couples will go on to lead a happy life together. In contrast, negative communication patterns such as anger and contempt pave the way for unmerited EXIT from relationship. Disagreements are part of any partnership, but some fighting styles are particularly damaging. Couples that use destructive behavior during arguments — such as assault, battery, yelling, resorting to personal criticisms or withdrawing from the discussion — are more likely to break up than are couples that fight constructively. Examples of constructive strategies for resolving disagreements include attempting to find out exactly what your partner is feeling; listening to his or her point of view and trying to make him or her relax by admitting your mistake. TEJI SANDHU ROCKS IN POLLYWOOD & BOLLYWOOD WRITTEN BY .....PROF AVTAR SINGH VIRDI
T
eji Sandhu is a well-known name in the world of Punjabi music today. Born in a small village Chakoki, district Kapurthala, Punjab, He had been always fascinated by music and acting. He was so-so in studies but always favourite of his teachers and school mates for his singing. For all kinds of special days, Teji used to be the main show maker in his school time. Teji started playing ‘Dafli’ by taking inspiration from a carefree Yogi who sang in the village streets. Teji taught himself how to play ‘Dafli’ all by himself that has become his typical style of singing. Teji is very much inspired bythe singing of Sukhwinder Singh, the famous Bollywood singer who has become a legend in Bollywood by his immortal songs ‘ Laee vi na gayee te nibhaee vi na gayee, Chal chhaiyan chahaiyan’ and many more. As he grew up with all appreciations for his singing talent, he started dreaming to make singing his profession. He started his band and performed in almost all types of yearly big Punjabi melas(festivals). He also won several awards in various singing competitions. Kapil Sharma, the present world famous Bollywood comedian, joined his band and made his band more famous with his comedy and his band became very favourite of Punjabi people. In 1998, Gurpreet Ghuggi looked at their talent and took them into his team. Teji’s first album was released by Music Waves Canada in 2006, in which Teji sang the main song ‘Aja Mere Mapian Di Nuh Ban ja’, written by Gurpreet Ghuggi in which Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh also acted. This song and video brought Teji Sandhu great name and fame. In the parallel, Kapil Sharma won several
competitions of comedy and carved a niche for himself in Bollywood and entered Comedy Circus show in a big way where he left a great impact on show fans all over the world. Kapil got a break through his super hit show ‘Comedy Nights with Kapil Sharma’ and he called Teji Sandhu and all band members to Mumbai where they are presently working as a team. Teji Sandhu and Kapil Sharma have performed their comedy shows all over India besides performing in Australia, Dubai, Muscat and Canada where Kapil Sharma concludes his show by singing with Teji Sandhu. When Sharukh Khan came to Kapil Sharma’s Comedy night show first time for the promotion of ‘Chennai Express’, Kapil
introduced Teji Sandhu to Shahruk Khan and asked him to sing for him on the show stage. Even Sharukh Khan got very impressed with Teji’s singing. Teji has sung some Hindi movie songs which are in the pipeline. He is looking forward to a lucky breakthrough in Bollywood and working continuously with top musicians of Bollywood. Teji Sandhu has been doing many regular shows with Jalandhar Doordarshan for the last several years, and presently he is doing a super hit show ‘DD Punjabi Rocks’ that is telecast every week. Teji’s recent song ‘dade daiyan nahi labhde’ has been highly praised by Punjabi culture-loving people. His famous albums are ‘Gori. Blue Eyes and Sikka with about 40 songs. He is very thankful to Kulwinder Sanghera and the whole team of Red FM 93.1 radio, Vancouver, who always treat him as their own family member. Teji’s fans have very hopes from him. We wish him all the best for his all future projects.

JULY 2016
very year, Greece welcomes visitors from everywhere in the world, especially during the course of summer. As the Greek sun is synonymous with freedom and a carefree lifestyle, yet the country’s mild climate and many attractions, along with its excellent infrastructure, have made Greece a favourite destination in winter too. One can travel to Greece via many different means: by road, plane, train or sea. There are major road links for going to Greece with Europe and Asia. The country’s airports provide top-notch services. Rail connections with Europe allows lovely nostalgic journey. On the other hand Greek ports welcome ocean-going ships and local ferries all year round. Places to explore in Greece Visit the Acropolis – Located in Athens, this magnificent temple is a great place to learn about Athen’s history while you get a great view of the city and the nearby ruins. During the summer, the place is swarming with tourists and sadly, the Parthenon is always under construction, but the views are great! Explore the past – Greece is where western civilization began and everywhere you turn, you will find ruins that are thousands of years old. Start in Athens with the museums, the Acropolis and surrounding ruins (the Agora is wonderful), and then set off to explore the ruins of Delphi, Sparta, and Crete. If you love history, you’ll love Greece. Explore the beaches – From Crete to Santorini to Corfu, the Greek islands are some of the best in the world. Soak in the sun, admire the white sand and blue-roofed houses, and just relax. Santorini is famous for couples, while Ios is great for parties and meeting other young travelers. Some off the beaten path islands include Rhodes, Kos, or the ones in the far east. During the summer, most of the islands are full so book early. Read More: My guide to the Greek Islands. Attend the Hellenic Festival – Every summer, the Hellenic Festival in Athens has concerts and performance theatre, including re-enactments of Greek tragedy. It’s one of the

Travelling in Greece country’s top cultural events and if if coincides with your visit, you’ll see just how proud the Greeks are of their past. Olympia – See the ruins of Olympia, the place where the famous Olympic Games all started. There is also a great reconstructed Temple of Zeus here. Meteora – Located mid-way through Greece, Meteora is famous for its monasteries that sit at the top sheer of Rock Mountains. It’s a wonderful experience to see and worth the steep trek up to the top. Although more than twenty monasteries used to perch on the steep rocks, only six remain today. Take in the sun in Corfu – The Greek Islands may get all the press but sunny Corfu on Greece’s west coast is also a good place to enjoy the beach too. It’s a popular destination for young backpackers. Delphi Ruins – Delphi has always been a place of historic and spiritual significance. This is where the omniscient Oracle would contact Apollo and give advice to those seeking good fortune. Melissani Cave – A boat tour will take you into these caves, where you can admire the magical quality of ultramarine water and monumental walls that surround you. Mount Olympus – Mount Olympus is the home of ancient gods. From here the
gods would control the lives of mortal men. Any climb to Mount Olympus starts from the town of Litochoro. A walk up this mountain will be strenuous and mystical and you’ll see why Greeks thought it was this mountain from which the gods ruled. Hike the Samaria Gorge – For the outdoor enthusiasts out there, this is considered one of the best hiking experiences in Greece. The Samaria Gorge does promise beautiful landscapes, fantastic photo opportunities, and a great workout. Patra Carnival – Every year in midJanuary, the city of Patra is host to what is basically a month-and-a-halflong party. There are a slew of events, both major and minor; increasingly crazy weekends; and various costume parades, which even feature floats. It’s usually a good idea to make hotel reservations well in advance for this shindig. Archaeological Museum of Heraklion – The number one attraction on Crete, this museum also happens to be Greece’s second largest archaeological museum next to the museum in Athens. There is a stunning collection here, which highlights the Cretan civilization (dating back from Neolithic
times, through to the Roman Empire). Santorini – Although it but one of the numerous Greek islands, many consider it to be the most spectacular. Aside from the beautiful landscape and volcanic presence, it is a great place for beachside camping, winery tours, scuba diving, and more. Temple of Olympian Zeus – While you are walking about Athens, this is a great archaeological site to stop at. This temple is massive and took over 700 years to construct (dating back to the sixth century). There are a number of Corinthian columns still standing, though many have fallen. It’s quite an impressive sight. Greece is not only beautiful with its ocean landscapes, distinct architecture and delectable food, but it’s also incredibly affordable. Things costs half what they do in other parts of Europe. As one of the continent’s most popular destinations during the summer times, people from around the world flock to its famous islands for the sun, and to the cities for the history. I love Greece. It’s warm; it’s cheap; it has delicious food, beautiful islands, and lively and friendly l ocals. It’s the perfect summer destination.

T
he battle between the makers of ‘Udta Punjab’ and Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has finally come to an end with the Bombay High Court approving of only one cut against the 89 cuts suggested by CBFC. The makers, along with many members from the Hindi film industry are delighted at the decision, which is being touted as a ‘landmark decision.’ But of course, the fight hasn’t been an easy one for the makers. We spoke to the director of the film, Abhishek Chaubey to know what all has he been through in the past few days, his thoughts on Censor Board chief Pahlaj Nihalani and more. Kashyap was at the forefront of the fight against the board, which had asked for multiple cuts in the drug-themed drama, directed by Abhishek Chaubey. The producers had moved the Bombay High Court against the the Central Board of Film Certification’s decision (CBFC). The court cleared the film for release with just one cut. Kashyap said they were careful in not letting the film get dragged into politics while they were fighting the censorship.

Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Vidya Balan (special appearance). Direction: Ribhu Dasgupta. Genre: Thriller. Duration: 2 hours 17 minutes John Biswas’ (Bachchan) life is torn apart when his young granddaughter Angela Roy is kidnapped. Though Martin (Nawazuddin), the police inspector who handled the case has quit; John refuses to do so. Eight years after her disappearance, a similar kidnapping puts the spotlight back on the case. John, Martin and a new Inspector Sarita Sarkar (Vidya Balan) begin their hunt for the criminal. What is intriguing is that the modus operandi seems to be similar to the Angela case. The storyline of the movie was based on the Korean film, Montage; Te3n is a whodunit that is simple in its intention but clever in its execution. The disappearance of an abducted child has turned two people’s lives upside down; one is that of John and the second is that of Martin‘srole played by the Nawaz, who is flawless as a policeman-turned-padri seeking atonement. John makes it his life’s mission to resolve his granddaughter’s abduction and murder. Nothing will stop him— not old age, an erratic scooter or his caregiver duties to his wheelchairbound wife. TE3N
Piku, is superlative. Having mastered every mannerism of a senior citizen, whether it is the mouth-agape expression or looking over the rim of his spectacles, his nuances are spot on. And that isn’t the only aspect of the film that is right. The plot starts with introducing the audience to the eight-yearold kidnapping case through a conversation between John and investigating officer Sarita (Vidya is dynamic). And its strength is that it never wavers from around its three principal characters - the granddad, cop and priest, each of who is involved with the case for reasons of their own. Impressive part of the story What is also impressive is that the mystery is kept alive right through. As the jigsaw puzzle falls into place, the protagonists’ feelings towards the situation and themselves falls perfectly into place, keeping the viewers pleasantly engaged with the plot and the people. The film’s ability to maintain the suspense right till the end makes it a must-watch for those who like whodunits. However, a better pace could have lifted this film a notch.

Fashion Tips for men! • F itting of clothes – Make sure that everything you wear fits impeccably. Most guys wear clothes that are too large. Make sure everything you wear is almost hugging the shape of your body – without being tight. Bad fit is an epidemic. •A lways follow simplicity – You want a wardrobe that looks great on you, but don’t overdo it. Don’t wear more than three pieces of jewellery or more than three colors. Doesn’t dress like a rock star unless you’re in a band? If you want to be flashy, a simpler but stylish look would be sporting a black striped dress shirt with a white blazer, a dark pair of jeans, a dressy belt, and your sharpest dress shoes. You could also add a flashy watch or a simple accessory like an interesting necklace, but nothing more. •C hoosing of shoes – If it’s one thing that women will notice, it’s your shoes. Especially how clean and sharp they look. It’s easy to wash and press the rest of your clothes to keep them looking new, but most guys disregard their shoes. Show that you’re a man of taste by getting a great pair of shoes and keeping them in pristine
condition. • Fashion Tees with logos – When you prefer a big logo on your shirt, you risk looking like a walking billboard. Lose the lame Coca-Cola shirt and go for a classic V-neck tee or something arts. • Improvising your image – Invest more time and money into your image. Cultivate your fashion sense. Your style is a huge mode of communication, and is worth caring for as much as your education, career, and relationships. • Upgrading your shave – Even if your fashion is golden, an unkempt beard can be an attraction killer. Achieve a perfect shave by trying a shave brush & old-fashioned double-edged razor. • Experiment with style – The only way you’ll really learn, is if you go out there and try new things. There are many times when you’ll end up loving something you never thought you would. If you make mistakes, life goes on. So many guys are afraid to express themselves through their style, doesn’t be one of them.
