Every child is a born artist. Every artist is first an amateur. In his/her formative years when a child pursues his passion and finds a talented Guru and that too happens to be a father; that is ‘Sone Pe Suhaga (an icing on the cake). Being chips of the old block, Arvinders’ Children Asa Singh (son) and Akasa Singh[daughter] are a roaring success. I do not have an iota of doubt, that these precocious children will further add excellence or supremacy to the legacy of their dad- a living celebrity girl Hema Malini. He is blessed with two kids- Akasa Singh (daughter) fame “Tu Kheech Meri Foto” her debut song in Bollywood Movie “Sanam Teri Kasam”. Her latest hit is “Thug Ranjha” with Sony Music fame song and Asa Singh (son) of Channa Mereya fame song- both have made successive forays into the vocal music industry. Why not? After all, being second generationers, they are chips of the old block. A scintillating future is waiting for these talented kids. Arvinder is born to parents -Sr. Darshan Singh and Srdni Maninder Kaur. This triple AAA, triage [Arvinder, Akasa Singh and Asa Singh sings from the same song sheet. 10 THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND BEFORE BUYING SUPER VISA INSURANCE Sandeep Ahuja Continued... from the previous issue

I

n our previous issue, we had discussed the meaning and need of Super Visa Insurance. Before purchasing a Super Visa Insurance, certain important points need to be kept in mind as follows: 1. When can I buy? A super visa applicant is required to attach the super visa certificate along with the super visa application. So you need to buy super visa insurance before applying for super visa. It provides a minimum coverage of one year which can be extended for another one year. If you already have a super visa insurance that is going to expire soon and you want to stay longer, it’s important to purchase insurance before the expiry of existing coverage.

2. Pre-existing medical condition: A pre-existing

medical condition is a medical condition that exists before the arrival of parent/grandparent. As per the criteria of different insurance companies, the pre-existing medical condition needs to be stable for either 120 or 180 days prior to the purchase of policy. Therefore, a detailed research will need to be done to ensure that the plan is affordable and it also covers pre-existing health conditions. Some people do not disclose their pre-existing medical condition during the purchase of the policy. However, it may result in the decline of your claim at a later stage if an emergency arises and your pre-existing medical condition is discovered by insurance company. So always disclose any pre-existing condition in the beginning and purchase a policy that adequately covers the same.

3. Maximum coverage period: Citizenship and Immigra-

tion Canada requires a minimum of one year of coverage but this is not the maximum coverage period. Coverage can be bought for up to 24 months.

4. Basic Plan versus comprehensive coverage: Basic

plans offer only a very basic coverage. These plans can help in super visa application approval. However, for a few extra dollars,

the comprehensive plan can be purchased and things/risk factors such as pre-existing medical conditions, accidental death and dismemberment benefits, follow-up visits and paramedical services will be included.

5.

Deductible options:

Like any other insurance policy, deductible is what you will require to pay out of pocket if there is a claim against the policy. The more deductible you pay, the less is the premium. Insurance companies offer a deductible of $0, $250, $500, $1000 and $10,000. So you can save from 10% to 45% of the premium by selecting the desired option.

6. Refund policy: Different

companies charge an administration fee of $25, $50 and $100 for early departure. However, ensure that there is no claim against the policy, no matter how small; or early refund will be denied.

broker should have the knowledge and experience to answer your questions correctly. As an independent insurance advi-

sor working through Punjab Insurance Agency, I deal with different insurance companies offering plans for Super Visa insurance. I can explain to you in detail, various insurance plan options and

coverage that are suitable for your needs and resources.

email: sandeepahuja@punjabinsurance.ca

7. Accidental death and dismemberment benefits:

Without question, this is a good benefit to have. However, not all companies provide it. The usual cost for this benefit is between $10- $15 per month, depending upon the insurance company. 8. C.I.C. requirements: Ensure that the C.I.C. requirements are carefully reviewed and met. These mandatory requirements include a coverage of $100,000 for one year policy which includes repatriation benefit and emergency medical coverage. 9. Free-look period: Some companies offer the right to look and review the policy for free for 10 days. If, for any reason, within those 10 days you decide to cancel the policy; then it will be done with no questions asked and full premium paid will be refunded, provided the policy hasn’t started yet. 10. Service: One of the most important features of the Super Visa insurance provider is- service. There should be no problems in contacting and communicating with your broker after the policy has been purchased. The purchase of this insurance policy should establish a long term commitment between you and your insurance broker for the life of the policy. The broker should ensure that the effective date of policy is clear and the visa date and arrival date of the insured is confirmed. If this is not the case, then these should be changed as often as necessary before the policy takes effect. Also, while the policy is active and should you require advice, then the

anada became a self-governing dominion of Great Britain and a federation of four provinces: Nova Scotia; New Brunswick; Ontario; and Quebec on July 1, 1867. The anniversary of this date was called Dominion Day until 1982. Since 1983, July 1st has been officially known as Canada Day. Denizens of Canada are proud of their heritage on Canada Day, an event eagerly awaited and widely celebrated throughout the country. In many towns and cities, municipal governments organize a series of events, often outdoors. The celebrations often have a patriotic mood. Canada’s national flag is widely displayed and a lot of people paint their faces red and white, which are Canada’s national colors. The celebrations in Ottawa, which is Canada’s capital city, are particularly scintillating. Public celebration: July 1 is a statutory holiday in Canada. If it falls on a Sunday, it is moved to July 2, except in Nova Scotia and in Newfoundland and Labrador. All provincial governments observe this day. Many organizations, businesses and stores are closed, although some book stores, pharmacies and gas stations may be open. Post offices are closed. As Canada Day falls in the Canadian summer holiday period, all schools are closed.

Public transport services may operate to their usual or a reduced timetable. In some areas, extra services are provided for large scale events. Street closures due to concerts, parades and festivals may cause some local disruption to traffic. Country Background On July 1, 1867, the British North Americas Act created the Dominion of Canada as a federation of four provinces. This event is known as the confederation of Canada. The four original provinces were created from the former British colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the Province of Canada, which was divided into the provinces of Quebec and Ontario. Canada’s boundaries have been extended

since 1867. The country now consists of 10 provinces and three territories. On June 20, 1868, the Canada’s Governor General proclaimed that Canadians should celebrate the anniversary of the confederation. July 1 became a statutory holiday, known as Dominion Day, in 1879. However, no official celebrations were held until the 50th anniversary in 1917 and the 60th anniversary in 1927. After World War II, Dominion Day was celebrated more frequently and more events were organized by the national government. After the centenary of the confederation in 1967, Dominion Day events became more widespread. July 1 became popularly known as Canada Day. The date

was also officially known as Canada Day from 1983 onwards. Symbols Canada’s national flag is seen on Canada Day. This consists of two vertical red rectangles separated by a white square. The white square contains a red image of a maple leaf. Canada’s national colors are red and white and are used in many ways on Canada Day. Some people wear red and white clothing and others paint their faces in these colors. O Canada OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all of us command. With glowing hearts, we see thee rise, The True North strong and free! From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free! Mixing Metal Colours in Jewellery -

How to Get it Right

For some odd reason, it has been instilled in our heads that we can only wear one colour of jewellery at a time. Well, not anymore. Mixed metals are having a moment in jewellery, and it is one of the hottest fashion trends.

Ritika Tiwari Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist

T

hat means, you can finally dig deep into your jewellery drawer to wear rhodium with copper, pale rose gold with oxidised silver or gunmetal with bright yellow gold. Whether you are wearing a layered neck chain or stacking bangles, the latest mixed metal trend works with everything. Let’s dive deep and see how you can make this new trend work: Hardware isn’t everything From bags to boots and sunglasses, almost everything has some hardware on it. But you don’t necessarily need to match the hardware with your jewellery, whether it’s zippers, buckles, or hinges. Instead, you can use multi-toned jewellery pieces that make your outfit stand out and compliment the hardware as well. Though, if you are someone who gets stressed about the fact that the silver buckles in your boots don’t match with your rose gold watch, then we recommend choosing clothes and accessories that have much less hardware to worry about. Focus on the purpose While mixing jewellery is modern and trendy, you can’t just wear all the different metals colours you have. There has to be some thought put into it. Mixing metals should look stylish and purposeful at the same time. If your jewellery looks haphazard, then you have already crossed the line and made a fashion faux pas. That is why it is important to make sure that the jewellery pieces you choose compliment each other and make sense aesthetically. Mind the ratio When you are mixing and matching different jewellery pieces, it’s important to keep the colour ratio in mind. Instead of going 50/50 with two different colours,

16

JULY 2018

mix jewellery in a way that there is a lot of one colour with just a little hint of the other colour. Think of mixing jewellery like mixing two bright colours together. They can be beautiful when they compliment each other, but things can quickly go wrong if it’s overdone. It all depends on the ratio. Three is better than two When you are mixing metals, you don’t just have to stop at two colours. You can add a third colour to your jewellery to help connect the two metal shades. For instance, if you are wearing a necklace which is silver and black, then you can wear a gold and black ring with it. The colour black will act as an anchor to make both the jewellery pieces work together and look more cohesive. When you are starting to mix metals, and you aren’t confident about your combinations yet, this is the safest way to go.

Get a combination piece Stacking jewellery pieces is fun, but if you are always in a hurry and you don’t want to spend too much time finding the right pieces that work together, then you can just buy a combination jewellery piece which already has multi tones. A piece like that won’t only cut your time into the half, but it can also work as the base for new combinations.

Before you go: Remember to break the rules Mixing metals in jewellery is all about breaking the rules. The clear cut boundaries of wearing jewellery have been blurred by this new trend. For you, it means that there are no set rules to mix colours anymore. Go with what feels the most comfortable for you. From statement pieces to delicate fine jewellery, there is something out there for everyone.

Instead of a basic colour, you could also use a third metal tone like rose gold to make gold and silver jewellery pieces look good together. Layer jewellery pieces The quickest way to wear different coloured metals colours is by layering jewellery pieces. You could wear bangles in two different colours. But make sure that the bangles you are wearing are of the same style and only the colours are different, otherwise the designs may clash with each other. You could also wear a watch of one colour and bracelet of another colour, all on the same wrist. Stack different coloured rings to make your entire outfit look more stylish and international at the same time.

What is Mind Power, how it can help us‌ Whatever your mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve- Budha

Navtej Khela

Realtor and Mind Power Trainer

H

uman mind has been a subject of great curiosity for all of us. Prof. William James of Harvard University once said that the most successful people on this planet have used only 1 to 10% of the powers of their mind. It is said that the famous scientist Albert Einstein used 4.5% of his mind power. So imagine if someone like him can do wonders by using this little mind power, we need to evaluate and understand how much mind power we are using in whatever we are doing? The biggest reason for this ignorance about mind power is that no college or school teaches us anything about it. Let us first understand what is mind? A lot of people confuse mind with brain. They are totally different entities. Mind is a source and centre of energy in our body. Just like electricity it cannot be seen but it is there, working 24 X 7 and all our lives till we die. Brain on the other side is an organ of body which can be dissected and can be seen as well. In computer language we can call Brain as hardware and Mind as

www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

software. The number one job of Mind is to create thoughts. Those thoughts can positive or negative, depending upon the attitude of a person. There are two types of Mind- 1 Conscious mind 2 Subconscious mind Conscious mind is like a boss and subconscious mind is like a servant. It is so funny that our conscious mind (boss) has only 10% powers, whereas our sub-conscious mind (Servant) has 90% powers. Our conscious mind is like a tip of the iceberg, only 10% is visible outside

the water but 90% of iceberg is under the water which is not visible. This invisible part of iceberg is so powerful that it can wreck the strongest of ships. Similarly when we tap into the powers of our subconscious mind we get success in achieving all our goals and dreams. Do you know you can achieve all your dreams with the help of your sub-conscious mind? If you train your mind to create positive and planned thoughts and learn how to communicate with your subconscious mind, you can do wonders in your life and create history in the

field of your expertise. I teach this in my seminars that by using some simple techniques anybody can make this communication possible between conscious and subconscious minds and fasten the process of achieving his dreams and goals. Please feel free to contact me about my next seminar; this one hour seminar could be a life changing moment for you.

ollywood diva Catherine Zeta-Jones says she is done with apologising for her star status. The 48-year-old actor, who is married to Hollywood veteran Michael Douglas, says she no more gets intimidated by the criticism that celebrities receive for their lifestyle. “One thing I’m not is humble anymore. I’m sick of being humble. I really am. ‘So sorry I’m rich, so sorry I’m married to a movie star, so sorry I’m notso-bad-looking.’ No sorrys. Enough. All that is important to me now is my work. That’s what I love, and the rest of my life is a joy because I’ve got two beautiful kids and a healthy, happy husband. It’s all good, and I’m not going to be humble for that either,” Zeta-Jones told Daily Mirror. This American actor doesn’t see the world in ‘Black or White’, knows there’s no gain without pain, and is a high flying superhero at heart. We’re talking about rising superstar Anthony Mackie. The actor said she is happy that her

children, 17-year-old Dylan and Carys, 15, are willing to pursue acting and follow the footsteps of their grandfather Kirk Douglas and father Michael. “I have two kids who want to be actors and I am so proud. It’s not about fame for them. They’ve been brought up around famous people. They know what that is like. They want the craft because that’s what they love. And it gives me such pride that they get it. They understand that this is not a quick fix. They’re so good. I can’t wait for you all to see which way they’re going to go because they’re going to go somewhere, I’m telling you,” she said. Zeta-Jones also said she was not always sure about her work as an actor but became confident with age. “Somewhere along the middle I got frightened again and I started to question myself as an actor, my choices. As I matured as a woman, as a mother, as a wife, I’m not scared anymore,” she said. Courtesy: PTI

Be Flexible, Avoid Conflict When you are open and flexible, you discover unforeseen avenues to avoid conflict

Amrit Sadhana Management Team Osho International Meditation Resort, editor Osho Times International.

W

e all have an internal map of reality, our own subjective experience and everybody is uniquely placed in their own world. If you agree, you will be much more accepting the uniqueness and difference of other people. And, this will allow you and others to be what they are with their attitudes, beliefs, patterns and ways of behaviour. Normally, we presuppose that the other person is going to be difficult. It all depends on how you think about it. If you set up a base that it is “conflict,” you will create conflict. You will create what you don’t want. Think of it as a magical opportunity of expanding yourself, possibility of being flexible, coming up with new creative solutions, then you don’t create the idea of it being a conflict. In all human communications, there are moments of tensions. If you shy away from that, that’s what you tend to create. Think of human relations as full of many different things. those moments when there isn’t an easy flow could be moments when you can learn the most, and come up with new ways of relating with people. It works if you take the word conflict out. Imagine that your relationships are going to have moments of high energy and sometimes low energy. Then, it is not a problem. Osho has a very good insight about conflict. He says, when we meet somebody, we carry a baggage of the history of that person. We are not fresh in the moment. We are responding to many previous stories about that person. So, it is not a meeting of two persons in the moment, it is a meeting of stories from history. Difficult situations I have some frames that are helpful in dealing with difficult situations. One frame is to say, “I am responsible for my relationships with people. If there are difficulties, what can I do to be more flexible?” The difficulties arise because one person says that the others are wrong and he is right. So, the other should change. That is usually the basis for conflict. If you say that I am responsible for my relating, and I don’t necessarily say that I am right, and others are wrong, I say I have my position and others have their positions, where can there be a meeting? There can be

24

JULY 2018

a point of view where we can come together as a shared value; after this a lot of difficulties can go away. It is important to learn how you can build this frame into your communication. And, that needs practice. You can practice it by what frame of glasses you wear when you approach your relationships. What you do inside when you start relating to somebody can lead to difficulties or create possibilities. And, a lot of that literally is the belief you start with. If you believe that you are right and the other is wrong, very quickly you can get into difficulties. Each of us lives in his/her own unique world and there is no right or wrong. If you believe that you are right and the other believes that he is right, then the two rights hit each other and emotions come up quickly. Both feel hurt, offended and it does get into conflict and out of control. Beliefs play a major part in beginning or ending conflicts. If you believe that there are no difficult people, it is you who has to be more flexible; the communication starts on a different level. If you step out of this belief and say that we are different, and meet and share values, then difficulties clear up. Everybody has to see how I am creating the conflict before I have even gone to see this person. With awareness you will find that you have set up that s/he is going to be difficult, and s/he sure will be! Communicate The meaning of communication is the response that is created in the other. So, if you intend to be polite to somebody, you speak in a nice way, and yet they react in an angry way, you can either blame them or say “I was responsible for my communication. If I have to put a particular message across, I need to put it in a way that that person will understand. If they don’t understand it, all that it means is that the way I went about it is not appropriate. I drop the

way I behave and do something else.” It is a great responsibility. It is important not to blame others and not to beat yourself. Communication with people is a possibility of learning something new, developing new capabilities; time will come when what you call difficulties will be opportunities to learn. Instead of putting the energy in blaming others or blaming yourself, say, “Oh! It didn’t work, let me try another way.” When you have this attitude of learning, you develop more and more flexibility in human relationships. Coloured tools Imagine that you have many coloured glasses – wear yellow glasses for one mood, wear green ones for the other. Now, see how your vision changes. This is a very delightful game you can play with yourself. You will enjoy it secretly and nobody will know about it. Try this I want my boss to support my project, but whenever I approach him with this kind of demand, the answer is “No!” Now, the traditional way is to blame the boss. The new way will be to try to look at your own ways: What time I choose to approach him? How do I stand in front of his table? Can’t I ask him to come for coffee and approach in a more cordial atmosphere? So, you are now being creative about your own patterns of behaviour. Normally, if you look at your conflict it is the same old pattern repeated over and over again. Garbage in; garbage out. We keep doing the same thing; we keep getting the same response. And, it’s the same situation with lovers. You normally find conflicts between lovers because it is the same physiology, same gestures, same words, same tone of voice. How could we do something different to get a different response? But, I tell you, sometimes conflict is good! In relationships, sometimes, it

is good not to use your communication skills. Have a good fight, instead. It cleanses the system! So, the keys to good communication are: accepting yourself and others, rejoicing in your weakness, going beyond right and wrong, celebrating your own unique world, and allowing others to live in their world. USE COLORED BOX FOR BELOW PARAGRAPH Positive Outlook to Life Each one of us is made of various physical, vital, and mental parts. There is our physical body and its organs, muscles, and the vital being with its sensations, emotions and feelings, and the mental part with its thoughts, memories, reasoning power, beliefs, etc., Somewhere between our emotions and our thought processing lies our attitudes – our emotional perceptions about life, about others, even towards our own selves. Attitudes generally express positively and negatively. Interestingly, if we can identify a bad attitude and make the effort to change it, we will find that life will co-operate with our inner efforts, bringing us instances of sudden good fortune. So, the next time things start going wrong, wrong, wrong, just stop and ask; what is my attitude right now? Is it optimistic? Is it hopeful? Is it rude? When we change our attitudes, or otherwise elevate our consciousness, life quickly responds with miraculouslike instances of good fortune. Raise the Curb Appeal of Your home Navtej Khela

Realtor and Mind Power Trainer

T

he summer market is around the corner and I would like to share some ideas with home owners who are looking to put their house in the market. As they say first impression is last impression, so first impression of your home is front yard or entry area. These little ideas and upgrade would not cost much but are huge beneficial, especially when these days some buyers just want to drive by the property before even looking inside. So little bit of attention on the curb appeal will be inviting a lot more buyers than an ordinary looking front yard of the house. Here are a few of those ideas which will help to enhance the curb appeal of your home.

color, scale, design, details, and material are compatible with the home’s main features. So, a little bit of investment on these upgrades can get your home sold at top dollars and quicker and can attract more buyers, more buyers means better price for your property.

Navtej Khela Realtor and Mind Power Trainer

1. Dress up the front door Your home’s front entry is the focal point of its curb appeal. Make a statement by giving your front door a blast of color with paint or by installing a custom wood door. Clean off any dirty spots around the knob, and use metal polish on the door fixtures. Your entry should also reflect the home’s interior, so choose a swag or a wreath that reflects your personal style. 2.Replace old hardware House numbers, the entry door lockset, a wallmounted mailbox, and an overhead light fixture are all elements that can add style and interest to your home’s exterior curb appeal. If they’re out of date or dingy, your home may not be conveying the aesthetic you think it is. 3. Install outdoor lighting Low-voltage landscaping lighting makes a huge impact on your home’s curb appeal while also providing safety and security. Fixtures can add accent lighting to trees or the house or can illuminate a walking path. 4. Dress up the driveway If your driveway is cracked or stained or has vegetation sprouting from it, you can upgrade it for curb appeal without doing a complete redo. First repair the cracks and stains (and kill the weeds), then dress it up by staining the concrete or affixing flagstones. If you need more room to move your car or park, add stone, brick, or pavers to the sides of the drive to widen it with flair. 5. Upgrade railings Porch and stoop railings can deteriorate quickly if not treated properly. If your railings are past their prime, look for quality wood or metal components to replace the existing material and improve curb appeal. As with other improvements attached directly to the house, make sure the

3 Summer Trends You Should Work on Mastering This Season

Monochromes Pick a colour tone and set an outfit around it. The monochrome trend is a trend that’s here to stay. To add a dramatic effect, you can add one single accessory of a different colour. Priyanka Chopra has been rocking a lot of monochrome off late. Take cue from her. Oversized clothes We aren’t talking rapper tees and baggy denims that slide off your back. We are talking oversized layered looks that compliment your frame. A pant that folds around the inner seams paired with a loose shirt and a light jacket. Sonam Kapoor wears a lot of oversized stuff, courtesy Bhane.

S

ummer fashion is breezy easy. At least we all believe that. Pick up a white tee and a pair of blue denims and you’re sorted. Or just a coloured crop top and white denims and

you’re all done. It’s possible to look absolutely stylish in the summer without putting in a lot of effort. But the same thing can be done in a different way. What we mean is that your look books can be ex-

panded to include some great looks AND be set to the tunes of the running trends. Here are three easy breezy trends you should try on.

Prints! More prints! Take cue from Sonam Kapoor, again. Or Ranveer Singh. The prints trend ain’t going anywhere because it is so versatile and there’s so much you can do with it. It’s not everyone’s cuppa tea but should be. Prints are an easy way to add some personality to your outfit. And print on print is simply next level if you can nail it. Cortsey: SWIRLSTER

Crying is a healthy response……normally they are two separate problems. Crying over nothing at all, or crying about small things that normally wouldn’t bother you, may be a sign of depression. What happens to your body when you cry a lot? When we cry, our bodies get rid of toxins — with emotional tears, there is a release of leucine-enkephalin, an endorphin that reduces pain and helps to improve your mood. This is a super important detox because it helps to reduce stress immediately.

Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Health Coach of University of Victoria

W

hen we cry, a salty fluid comprising of protein, water, mucus and oil is released from the lacrimal gland in the upper, outer region of our eyes. This fluid, popularly known as tears, then flows down the surface of our eyes, across our faces and get noticed by others with reactions in some cases. Types of tears… Basal tears are ever-present in our eyes. They tear keep our eyes from drying out completely. The human body produces an average of 5 to 10 ounces of basal tears each day. They drain through the nasal cavity, which is the reason so many of us develop runny noses after a fit of uncontrollable sobbing or crying. The second type is reflex tears, which serve to protect the human eye from harsh irritants such as smoke, onions or natural calamities. To achieve this the sensory nerves in your cornea communicate this irritation to your brain stem, which in turn sends hormones to the glands in the eyelids. These hormones cause the eyes to produce tears, effectively relieving them of the irritating substances. The third type of tears is emotional tears. It all starts in the cerebrum[ in the brain] where sadness is registered. The endocrine system is then triggered to release hormones to the ocular area, which then causes tears to form. Emotional tears are common among people who suffer personal losses or experience sadness, sorrow, agony and pain around them Is crying okay? Cry for your own pain, not for others. Crying in movies and when

Crying is a human response to sorrow, frustration and loss in succession. It is termed as healthy. It is a natural remedy to reduce accumulated emotional distress that, if left unchecked, can have negative effects on the body, including increased risk of heart diseases.”

“Some researchers believe that emotional crying is the body’s way of clearing out these toxins and waste products. ... The other chemical found in emotional tears is leucineenkephalin, an endorphin that reduces pain and works to improve mood. Endorphins are our body’s’ in-built system, and are released to fix our pain go away. Endorphins are a group of hormones secreted within the brain and nervous system and perform a number of physiological functions. They are peptides that activate the body’s opiate receptors, causing an analgesic effect and we feel better from the painful event on the anvil “ listening to sad songs is a good way to let off some built-up emotions. Remember it’s okay to cry for yourself Is it OK to cry every day? There are people who cry everyday for no good reason, they are truly sad all the time. And if you are tearful everyday over doings that are normal in your activities of daily life[ADL], that may be depression. And that’s not normal. That needs a visit to your Doctor. Crying make us feel physically and emotionally better: Some scientists agree that chemicals build up in the body during times of elevated stress. These researchers believe that emotional crying is the body’s way of saying good bye to these toxins and waste products. The other chemical found in emotional tears is leucine-enkephalin, an endorphin that reduces pain and works to improve mood. It will not be out of place to mention that; many scientists point out that research in this area is very limited and should be further studied before any conclusion can be made. Some people cry all the time and not feel better…. Crying is believed to be a natural body mechanism. It helps us to heal from the present-day loss and

frustration. But, in case, we selfcriticize ourselves- during crying, -then healing does not happen in first attempt. One need to successfully cry that heart-break out of ones’ system. These people cry frequently, but not fully. That is why they never seem to heal from what’s hurting them. Relationship break -a heartache: When a break happens in a relationship, that has lasted longer, then one may need multiple crying sessions to process all the heartache. Do not criticize yourself and healing will be faster. A breakup do provide an opportunity to revisit earlier losses in our lives. Are there any benefits to crying? As per experts, emotional tears have special health benefits. You don’t want to hold tears back. Biochemist and “tear expert” Dr. William Frey at the Ramsey Medical Center in Minneapolis claim that reflex tears are 98% water, whereas emotional tears do contain stress relieving hormones which get excreted from the body through crying and make us feel better. Why do I feel like crying for no reason? Your emotions are your body’s natural coping mechanism. While it’s true that some emotions can be “irrationally caused,” when the feeling is there it’s because your body needs to do it to feel better. Crying normally helps. Holding back emotions is not good idea. Either cry in isolation or in front of those well wishers who value your sad moments and unflinchingly help you to wade out of this emotional quagmire. Is crying a sign of weakness ? No. Crying is a Sign of Strength, Not Weakness. Crying is the body’s way to not only reduce emotional stress but move ahead full throttle. Think of emotions as an invisible force moving through the body. People tend to think that just because they cannot see or feel their feelings, when they refuse to feel them, they simply go away. They are wrong. Is crying for no reason a sign of depression? You may have symptoms such as anxiety, worry, restlessness, and tension. Anxiety and depression often occur successively, even though

A good cry option … Like laughing Yoga, in Japan, some people have taken the notion of “a good cry” to the next level. They hold organized crying clubs where they watch sad movies and television shows and read tearinducing books. Some people never cry…. Those people, may be, have the inability to feel physical pain. This is another genetic anomaly that can make a person less likely to cry. With an underdeveloped system of nerves for sensing injury, people with Congenital Insensitivity to Pain with Anhidrosis (CIPA) have a pain threshold high enough to ensure that tears flow never or very less often. Follow these tips for a genuinely good cry… • It is OK to cry for your own pain, not just for others. • Crying in movies and when listening to sad songs is a better way to let off some built-up emotions. But this process will not be relieving your own hurt fully. • No need to set a time limit on tears. Your heart will decide when enough is enough. Be patient. • Say only kind words to yourself; When you cry. It helps Bottomline Strong emotions cause our brains to release chemicals that indirectly lead to teary eyes. A flow of tears not only shoots up the level of endorphins and natural chemicals within the body- relieving stress, but also, they kick away toxins — making us feel healthier as usual. Some people cry frequently, some do not. Some are crying daily; some never cry at all. Some cry daily as it is a habitual for them. Though they never seem to heal from what’s hurting them in the light of the fact that they do not process their feelings fully. Crying is supposed to be good for you. Tears contain toxins, after all. And feel-good chemicals are released in the body whenever we cry tears of sadness. Mood-altering chemicals like prolactin, luteinizing hormone, testosterone, estrogen, and prostaglandins – in our bodyalso play a meaningful role in it What is important for a blissful life ahead, is not to carry the albatross of painful events happened in the past. Why? “A strong person moves ahead better, without the soring baggage, of the past.”

A Girl in a Whirl Contd. from previous issue (Part 22) “God knows what will happen in the morning when Sam wakes up? But I won’t remain scared anymore, come what may!”, I thought and finally decided. When I got up in the morning, Sam had left for work. I did my routine meditation. I went downstairs after reading ‘Sukhmani Sahib’. I was cooking something for me when I felt like throwing up. I rushed to the washroom to vomit. I felt I had become pregnant. My mother-in-law also noticed this. I made a cup of tea boiling caraway in that. Just then, my mother-in-law came to me and said, “Your official letter came yesterday. You have been called to an office for making your identity cards. Take your passport and other documents with you and go with Daljit.” I took all my documents and went with Daljit. We went to an office and stood in a line. Our turn came after a long wait. An English lady gathered a lot of information from me and put that in a computer. She told that my SIN card, Care Card and PR card would reach my home in two to four weeks. We came home after about three hours. It was feeling weird. Already I was in a trouble and, for my upcoming child, I had to shoulder additional responsibility. 27. Canada Police After coming home, I first went into my room and read Sukhmani

Sahib. I started pondering over my upcoming responsibility. I was feeling a kind of anxiety. I didn’t feel relaxed even after reading the bani. My eyes rested on a thick book lying on the shelf of the fireplace. I started going through it. It was a business directory. I rummaged through it. There were many business advertisements. There was an ad of Sam’s company too. There were Sam’s telephone numbers and perhaps the home address too. I was having stomach ache. I went into the washroom and took the directory with me. I was feeling like defecating, but I was not able to pass my stool. I read the directory and saw the names of various societies and agencies. Some of them, I learned, could help me. But I didn’t have a phone. I was scared to use landline in the kitchen because my mom-in-law or Daljit were always there. I also read about 9-1-1 emergency services. I was having terrible pain in my stomach. I put the directory on the toilet water-tank and came out holding my tummy. I lay on the bed with my tummy down. I was crying out of pain. “If my mom were here, she would give me some sort of herbal medicine. But I had all my enemies around me here.”, Eventually I called Jassi pretty loudly. She came running into my room. “Jassi, tell your mom to help me. I am having a terrible pain in my tummy.”, I told her. In a few minutes, Daljit came up with

caraway, salt and hot water. I thanked Daljit but she left without responding. I took that stuff with hot water and felt a bit relieved. Then I slept. I woke up when Sam and his mom entered my room. “Sam, call her mom. First let me talk and then let her do. And also tell her what she is supposed to say to her.”, my mom-in-law instructed Sam. “You are only supposed to say that you are ok. You are pregnant. If you said anything else, I would chop you into pieces.”, Sam threatened me. “I won’t say anything else. I promise. Let me talk to my mom.”, I implored. Sam called my mom and handed over his cell phone to my mother-in-law. “Sat Sri Akal bhenji! Congratulations to my kurhmani! We have good news.”, my momin-law talked to my mom so dramatically like it was a great celebration time at her house. “Really bhenji! Can I speak with Sonia?”, I heard my mom’s voice. Sam had put cell phone on speaker. “Sure bhenji! How this one and a half month flew away, we have no idea. Sonia’s presence at our house has charged the atmosphere with happiness and excitement. We had our relatives’ invitations almost daily. There were some official documents of Sonia to be prepared. We had to visit so many offices for that. I asked Sam to spare some time today and give you the good news, and let Sonia also talk to you. Contd. in next issue

How much Sugar should children eat per day? Part 5 Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Health Coach of University of Victoria

Dear readers, we need to understand the science of sugar. Foods high in added sugars, Dr. Lustig – a renowned American Pediatric Endocrinologist in an interview, are metabolized differently than those that are naturally sweet. An apple has fibre, which creates a type of gel in our small intestine that effectively blocks a certain amount of sugar from being absorbed by the body and instead causes it to be devoured by bacteria in the intestine. The fructose in sugary soda can only be metabolized by the liver and is then converted into fat. That fat either remains in the liver, potentially leading to life threatening fatty liver disease, or is converted as a triglyceride, possibly leading to cardiovascular disease and obesity. Sugar does not discriminate. Sugar is deemed toxic for all age groups - at least in overweight /obese kids. Unfortunately, world at large, continues to gulp down more sugar than ever before. Thepresent-day dietmade available to children is not health food at all; instead it is “kid food” like potato chips, pizza, bagels and Samosas. This completely proves that it’s not just the fat or the oils from junk food which are the bad guys, sugar is muscling in to be the real villain. Sugar turns into fat in the liver and affects the insulin resistance. Clearly, sugar is toxic irrespective of its calories and the weight gain it causes. How much sugar is OK for children? I asked renowned pediatrician Dr Pargat Singh Bhurji about sugar’s role in a child’s diet. Pat came the reply, “Let’s

36

JULY 2018

An alarming new study published in medical Journal Obesity, claims that sugar is actually toxic to your body. Intake of extra sugar itself or the weight gain caused by eating lots of sugar, lead to health issues.Overweight or obese children are much more likely to be dangerously overweight in adulthood and thus increase their risk of developing 11 forms of cancer. start by looking at American Heart Association (AHA) recommendations. The new guidelines call for less than 25 grams (6 teaspoons) of sugar per day for children ages 2 to 18 years. That includes no more than 8 ounces of sugarsweetened drinks per week. Children younger than 2 years should have no sugar at all.” Children and young people aged between 10 and 18 years typically have an intake of 73.2 grams of sugar a day, far in excess of the 30gms – or seven teaspoons – maximum recommended by medical fraternity.

Those 73.2gms are at par with 20 chocolate chips or custard cream biscuits or 4.8 jamfilled doughnuts. It also found that four- to 10-year-olds are consuming 53.5g of sugar a day, while the figure among 19- to 64-year-olds is 59 gm. daily. Now let us understand the logic behind the revised guidelines. Why AHA adjusted sugar limits downward? Because eating lots of added sugar early in life is linked to obesity, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. And those problems put children and young adults at higher risk for heart disease. Plus, filling up on sugary treats leaves less room in young tummies for heart-healthy food like fruits, veggies, whole grains and low-fat dairy products. Sugar - aman- made sweet poison: WHEN WE EAT MORE SUGAR than what is optimally required,it makes our organs fat by triggering the liver to convert it into fat and store it. Over time, a diet high in sugar could lead to globules of fat building around the liver, often the first step of non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases, something which was unheard of till the

1980s. Sugar mallets your heart: Heart disease, High Blood pressure, Brain Attack and diabetes are inter-related. It will not be out of place to mention that HeartDisease and Brain Attack are the number one cause of death among people with type 2 diabetes i.e. accounting for more than 65% deaths. Sugar primes our bodies for overweight, obesity and diabetes: A study found that for every 150 calories from man- made sugar, your risk of diabetes goes up by a little more than 1%. Due to extra sugar gushing recklessly in our blood vessels, they lose their elasticity. Added sugars cause release of excess insulin in the bloodstream, which tense the artery walls. Now that puts you on the road to high blood pressure, and ultimately, makes a Brain Attack or heart attack more likely. Parents should read labels, understand the mathunderneath it: Parents needto read food labels, find ‘sugar,’ and do the math — every 4.2 grams of sugar equals 1 teaspoon. That can add up fast, espe

Successive sugar consumption turns you into an addicted junkie. It will not be out of place to mention that sugar addiction makes the same chemical changes in your brain[ at serotonin level] as sexual pleasure or heroin and other hard drugs so as to experience pleasure. cially when kids ask for more and more. The worst sugars are in processed foods, sports drinks, pop, desserts and fruit juice [ purchased from market]. So, don’t rush to introduce this fruit juice to your kids — it has no nutritional value. The smart move is to make a juice in your home with fiber in it by using Nutri Bullet type of juicer. By July 2018, as per U.S. Food and Drug Administration, all manufacturers will clearly call out added sugars on food labels. In Canada it is being made mandatory. Meanwhile, review a product’s ingredients list for sugar (also known by names like highfructose corn syrup, dextrose, fructose, fruit juice and honey). Sugar is listed on product-label under 56 different names so as to befool us. We need to get more educated. Parents need to regulate: Parents need to regularly offer kids healthy choices at every meal and let them choose whatthey need. It may be fruit salad or eggs ormeat or vegetables first thing in the morning rather than at lunch or dinner — and that’s a smart thing to do. Children have an inbornability to adjust their diet to their energy intake. They can self-regulate the triage need of protein, fat and carbohydrates.”

sweets as the first thing to a child immediately at the time of birth. Do not give honey to the new born, as it can result in Botulism;an uncommon, but potentially very serious illness, a type of food poisoning, that produces paralysis of muscles via a nerve toxin called botulinum toxin (“Botox”) that is manufactured by bacteria named Clostridium botulinum. A question may be hitting at the doors of your minds; honey is given as first thing in South Asian culture to the new born baby yet no reaction happens. The reasoning is, in most of the cases the honey is fake i.e. it is nothing but man-made sugar or quantity of honey given is very less. For the first six months a child does not have an immunity of his/her own [ as the same is provided by mothers’ milk.]

Offer sweets to children in mod eration: Sweet treats, definitely have a place in your child’s diet, but it shouldn’t be every day. Dear Parents/ Grand-parents, sweets should be given strictly as a treat, in reasonable portions, on special occasions or days. Eating brings joy, but that joy should be geared toward the process of satisfying hunger. Children can’t choose a wellbalanced diet, but their parents can and should do so, right from the beginning. Do not give

Honey should not be given to a new born at least for one year, as per pediatricians. Other alternatives available…. Treat kids to oranges, apples, avocados, dried fruit or trail mix rather than ice cream, cookies and sugary cereal. When we are hungry, food tastes delicious. Parents should lead by example not by advice. Advice does not work, if parents are into junk food stuff themselves. It helps when parents model good eating habits and choose to eat fruits and veggies every day without fail. The food and drink industry also, can play a vital role, in

helping tackle obesity rates by reducing the sugar content in their products and making the healthy choice the easy choice. Sugar Tax slapped in some countries: Some countries have introduced similar measures. Mexico introduced a 10 per cent tax on sugary drinks in 2014 and registered a 12% reduction in sugar in soft drinks over the year by manufacturers.Hungary did the same and saw a 40% decrease in the amount of sugar in the products. Many European countries have initiated similar measures in place on soft drinks namely in UK, France, Finland. Norway has upped chocolateand sugar products tax by 83% as compared with last year to curtail sugar adding. What Canada is doing amid the global sugar tax initiatives In our country childhood obesity rates are on the rise. To take proper cudgels against added sugar in soft drinks and fruit juices, we need to do much more. Scores are in favour of a sugar tax on manufacturers– the list includes the WHO, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and Diabetes Canada. These organisations advocate the tax levy, will save lives and reduce health-care costs while at the same time raise billions for health-related initiatives. The good news is, soft-drink consumption in Canada, has already declined significantly in recent years and is the game is still on. So far, the government has announced changes to food

and beverage labels, including a nutritional fact-table wherein Sugar-based ingredients, such as honey and syrups, will be grouped together under the generic term “sugars” in the ingredients list. The government has also held public consultations on new regulatory measures to restrict the marketing of unhealthy food and beverages to children, as well as on a revision to Canada’s Food Guide and front-of-package nutrition labelling.A number of health organizations” had urged the government to implement a tax. Bottomline: THE SCIENCE OF SUGAR “Sorry to Ruin Your thinking; sugar is a man-made poison. This sweet stuff is wrecking our bodies. Death by sugar’ is not an overstatement. Mind it Sweet treats fascinate children. It’s tempting for parents and grandparents to reward good behavior of their children to see little faces light up. Dear parent, moderation is the key. It is time for Canada to move forward with a Sugar tax on manufacturers of water based and juice based added sugar beverages,it will earmark revenues for health care and include fruit juice, which is “liquid sugar” infused with a few synthetic vitamins that give parents the illusion that it is a healthy choice. Laconically, I can say: “Situation calls for a surgery not a minor incision.”

The Best At-Home Teeth Whitening Kits for After Braces or Invisalign

Dr Vishal Sharma BSc, DDS, Cert. Ortho. FRCD(C), FCDS(BC)

A

gorgeous smile with straight, white teeth gives the impression of good health and vitality. While, in many cases, the color of your teeth is more of a cosmetic concern, we place a lot of importance on smiles in our society and it’s understandable you’d want your smile to look its best after investing in orthodontic treatment. You wouldn’t be alone either. A survey of orthodontists in the United States found 88.8% of their patients requested tooth whitening and we’d guess it’s probably pretty close to that number in Canada. However, we know professional whitening isn’t easy on the wallet. Being the helpful Surrey orthodontists we are, we’re sharing the best at-home teeth whitening kits to give you a brighter post-treatment smile. Can You Whiten Teeth With Braces? A common question we get from our Abbotsford and Surrey braces patients is can your whiten teeth with braces? The answer is, unfortunately, we don’t recommend it. It’s best to save teeth whitening until after you’re finished with your braces treatment. This actually goes for most Invisalign patients too. Teeth whitening with braces or Invisalign attachments will lead to darker squares because the solution can’t reach underneath them. Additionally, sometimes crowding and spacing will cause some surfaces of the teeth to be whitened and others not. You only have to wear braces or Invisalign for a short time in the grand scheme of things, so it doesn’t hurt to be cautious and wait until you have a straight, new smile before whitening. That isn’t to say all hope is lost if your teeth aren’t as bright as you’d like during your orthodontic treatment. The best way to keep teeth white with braces or Invisalign is to brush after every meal and floss at least once a day. Also, avoiding foods and drinks that stain the teeth, like coffee and red wine, and not engaging in yellowing habits, such as smoking, will go a long way in your braces teeth whitening efforts. Another helpful tip is to drink lots of water. It will get your saliva flowing and aid in rinsing away cavity-causing food debris and acids. Maintaining excellent oral health is im-

portant because tooth decay certainly isn’t going to make your smile more dazzling. The Best Teeth Whitening Kits You can’t match the results from professional teeth whitening with an over-the-counter product. If your teeth need significant whitening, visiting a dentist is your best bet because a dentist can use stronger bleaching agents (usually hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide) and they have the knowledge and training to pull it off without damaging your teeth. With that being said, over-the-counter, at-home teeth whitening kits can give your smile a boost and make teeth noticeably whiter. You also have the obvious benefit that they’re much more affordable. So, if you’re looking to boost your teeth by a few shades, try it. Just be sure to talk to your dentist first if you have sensitive teeth and always read the package insert as not all whitening agents are appropriate for everyone, including those that shouldn’t be used by pregnant or nursing women. Now that the warnings are out of the way, here are some of the best home teeth whitening kits you can do without changing out of your pajamas: • Crest 3D White Professional Effects Whitestrips – Whitening strips are notoriously annoying and never seem to stay put. Thankfully, over the years, the design and materials have improved, so they’re more user-friendly. Crest Whitestrips are among the original at-home whiteners and they’re still popular because they work well to get your smile a bit brighter. The latest incarnation includes no-slip strips that are a million times better than they used to be. The drawback is that you have to remember to put them on

it once a day for 30 minutes for seven to 10 to days, making it a little more convenient than the usual hour-long process involved with some strips. The kit contains a 35% carbamide peroxide agent, trays and an LED light that attaches to the trays. Squirt the syringe of whitening gel into the mouthguard, bite down and relax while the system does its thing. every day for quite a while to get the best results. For those who want a high-tech upgrade, the company also has Crest 3D White Whitestrips with a handheld blue light that they say helps weaken stains, making the whitening ingredient work better. • Active Wow Teeth Whitening Charcoal Powder – Active Wow is an all-natural charcoal teeth whitening product and these seem to be all the rage. It doesn’t contain peroxide or other bleaching agents and is made from coconut sources. If you’ve seen the videos online, brushing your teeth with charcoal looks a little scary but it contains natural ingredients and it’s easy on your gums and won’t cause any additional sensitivity. A really big perk is you don’t have to use strips or paint anything on your teeth; you just brush your teeth with it like you would with your normal toothpaste. While some of the other teeth whitening products with a lot of buzz like 360 Teeth Whitening and Miracle Teeth Whitener have pretty mediocre ratings, Active Wow has thousands of glowing reviews and people really love the results they’re getting it from it. • AuraGlow Deluxe Home Teeth Whitening System – We promise we didn’t choose AuraGlow because of the similarity between our names. It’s one of the top-rated at-home teeth whitening kits. Also, you only have to use

• Rembrandt 2 Hour Whitening Treatment – Many of the best at-home teeth whitening kits, while way less expensive than professional whitening, are still $50 or more. However, Rembrandt’s 2 Hour Whitening Treatment is about half the price and you wear the customizable strips for 30 minutes for four consecutive days, as opposed to over a week. Each kit contains a primer, innovative strips that stay in place and mold to your teeth and a whitening rinse. At-home teeth whitening kits have seen a lot of upgrades over the years and they’re a cost-effective way to whiten your teeth by several shades if an in-office, professional whitening treatment isn’t in your budget. You could also choose the middle ground with a take-home kit from a dentist. The bleaching agents in these kits usually contains a higher concentration of peroxide and, sometimes, even customized trays – you can buy some of them online instead of from a pro but we’d caution against that because you want to make sure you’re getting the real deal. However, if you do choose to whiten your teeth at home when you’re finished orthodontic treatment, there are a number of tried and true products out there. If you have questions or you’re ready to straighten your newly white teeth, contact Aura Orthodontics today!

How To Make Your Hair Colour Last Longer

G

etting your hair coloured is in itself a bold move for many. Not too many of us are comfortable with the idea of applying chemicals to our hair and changing our natural look. But let’s be honest, once you’ve taken the step and leave the salon with perfectly coloured hair, you really can feel like you’re on top of the world. Before you know it, you’re addicted to getting your hair coloured exactly the way you like it. Here’s the thing, though, getting your hair coloured at the salon requires spending a decent amount of money - and having the hair colour fade away sooner than you’d anticipated can be a downer. What

46

JULY 2018

if we told you there were ways in which you can make that colour last longer (and save your money, obviously)? Here are a few simple things to remember that could save that colour from fading away sooner than you’d like. 1. Avoid hot water showers Taking a hot water shower can not only dry out your skin, but it can also deplete your hair of moisture and decrease the life of your hair colour. Hot water causes your cuticles to open, hence letting out that moisture and colour. Instead, switch to a warm water shower for your body and try to use room temperature water

to wash your hair. After washing, apply a conditioner and rinse off with cold water. This ensures that your cuticles seal shut. 2. Skip a shampoo No, we’re not asking you to let your hair stay greasy and dirty - but yes, we are asking you to put off shampooing your hair for as long as you possibly can. Decreasing the frequency of shampooing your hair can be a boon to newly coloured hair. The less often you wash your hair, the longer your hair colour is likely to last. So if you have the urge to wash your hair everyday, try fighting it and wait at least 48 hours before you shampoo away.

3. Take a break from your hair straightener And your curling tong. Also your hair dryer. We’re serious. We get that you love these tools and sometimes, using them is absolutely necessary. But when you’re not in dire need of a hair lift, avoid them. Using these hot tools on your hair too often can lead to your hair colour fading away sooner. Especially in the first week to ten days after getting your hair colored, avoid using these heat producing machines. Cortsey: SWIRLSTER

7 hacks to reduce oil on your face

A

cne or pimples are common, but they leave behind marks, making skin appear dull and scarred. It’s important that you cleanse, exfoliate and moisturise the skin and keep the pores clean and clear from make-up, dirt and oils to avoid acne. While some look for medical intervention to treat acne, in most cases, home remedies can also work effectively. Here are some ways to prevent and reduce acne at home. LEMON Cut a lemon and rub it over the skin. You can also use diluted lemon juice (with water) to cleanse and exfoliate the skin. The acidity in lemon helps to dry out acne and heal the scars. TEA TREE OIL Add a drop of tea tree oil to your regular cleanser. This will help prevent acne breakouts. Tea tree oil also works well to get rid of whiteheads and blackheads. CINNAMON Cinnamon is known for its anti-bacterial properties. Mix three tablespoons of honey with one teaspoon of cinnamon and make a face mask. Apply on the face for at least 10 minutes and wash it off thereafter. GREEN TEA Green tea is said to have anti-inflammatory properties. Add two tablespoon of green tea leaves to a cup of water and

48

MAY 2018 JULY

allow them to steep for 10 minutes. Dip a cotton pad in the tea and apply it directly to the skin. Allow it to remain on the skin for 10 minutes. EGG Eggs can help to tighten the skin pores. Mix one portion of egg white with honey and apply the mixture on your face. Leave the pack on for 10-15 minutes before rinsing. APPLE CIDER VINEGAR Apple cider vinegar has antibiotic properties that can destroy bacteria causing acne. Mix one part apple cider vinegar with two parts distilled water. You can use this lotion as a toner on acne-prone skin. HONEY Honey is a natural antiseptic and can help heal acne scars. Dab a small amount of honey over the affected area and leave it for 30 minutes before rinsing it off.

U

se Gentle Face Wash : Invest in oil-clearing face wash for yourself and use it religiously (twice, daily). By doing so, you’re going to ensure you eliminate the oil build-up that clogs pores on the skin. However, stay away from very harsh cleansers – instead of stripping your face off the excess oil-spill, they’d leave your skin dry. Result? Over time, a lot more oil on the face. Use Micellar Water: Micellar water acts as a toner and helps in removing unnecessary sebum and ensuring your skin doesn’t get too dry. Use Blotting Sheets: Blotting sheets contain glycolic acid that works on oil reduction. Use an occasional sheet or two every day.

Mask Yourself: Clay masks are the best bets for you to reduce oil and impurities. Use once a week. Throw in ingredients like honey and shea butter for hydration. Watch your diet : Foods rich in anti-oxidants and Omega 3 fatty acids facilitate the process of healthy skin. In general, stay away from anything high on sugar/fat. Get a facial: If you frequent a salon for a facial, don’t go for steam facials. Simple reason: they strip the moisture off your skin and in turn, make it oilier. Get a dermatologist: Maybe your oily skin has a medical condition. Get yourself a good dermatologist for some expert help. Cortsey: TNN

Sarah Paulson:

Ewan McGregor to star in Shining sequel, Doctor Sleep

Quality of television has surpassed film

A

ctor Sarah Paulson believes the quality of television has superseded that of movies and probably that is why more people are turning towards the medium. Paulson, who won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her role in the series. “There was a time where nobody wanted to do television, it was just a bunch of dodos, and it was like, ‘you can’t get any film work huh? Going over to TV? Aww, I’m sorry’,” Paulson told BBC. “And now I feel like very accomplished

people in the film world know that where the storytelling is, where the writing is, where the roles are, tend to be in television right now,” she added. With big guns likes Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and Meryl Streep also coming to the small screen, Paulson joked, “I’m like, this was my place, and now like I can’t compete when Meryl Streep is doing Big Little Lies, like, what’s going to be left for me?! Nothing. Maybe we can go and be the movie stars!” Courtesy: PTI

A

ctor Ewan McGregor will star as Danny Torrance in an adaptation of the Stephen King novel Doctor Sleep, the sequel to horror classic The Shining. According to sources, King has given his blessings to McGregor’s casting, reports variety.com. Mike Flanagan, who helmed Netflix’s adaptation of the King novella Gerald’s Game, is directing it. Flanagan’s producing partner, Trevor Macy, will produce it along with Vertigo Entertainment’s Jon Berg. Warner Bros had been developing this film, as well as The Shining prequel Overlook Hotel for years, but the studio struggled to secure a budget for either film. Following the success of It, every studio with any sort of King IP under its roof has fast-tracked each property into pre-production. Doctor Sleep begins as Torrance carries the trauma of the Overlook Hotel into adulthood. He has become a reflection of his murderous father, with lingering rage and a drinking problem that dulls his pain as well as his “shining” powers. Those powers return when he embraces sobriety and uses his gift to help the dying at a hospice. He establishes a psychic connection with a young girl who shares his extreme abilities, and who is being targeted by a group with similar abilities. They have found that their powers grow if they inhale the “steam” that comes off others with the power to shine, when they are suffering painful deaths. Stanley Kubrick directed the original adaptation of The Shining, starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. Danny Lloyd played a young Danny Torrance. At the time, the film was considered a box office disappointment, earning $44 million on a $19 million budget. ourtesy: IANS

The Confusion over the Best Before Date Leading to

Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC

T

he Confusion over the Best Before Date Leading to food Wastage When ever our purchased food Label Showing best before date is even a day over we throw away perfectly healthy nutritious food away with fear that it is unsafe . Contrary to the belief this food is perfectly healthy , Nutritious and eatable even over a week of the best before date Let us explore some facts & figures Canadians are some of the biggest food wasters in the world. We throw away 400 kilograms of perfectly good food per person a year. Research shows that you’re probably contributing to our colossal food waste problem by what’s in your garbage right at this very moment. 47% occurs at home, this collectively amounts to loss of Food Worth 31 Billion Dollars Every Year Most Canadians have no clue what the best before dates on food actually mean, and are throwing things out for no reason as a result. If you’re one of these people, you’re also spending way more money on food than you need to be.

perts, perishable foods like yogurt and hummus last longer than the best before date makes people believe. Many products that have a best-before date don’t even need them. Here’s how long these foods are safe to eat after their best before date, if they’re stored properly: • Milk, opened or unopened: 7 days • Yogurt, opened or unopened: 1 to 2 weeks • Butter, opened or unopened: 4 weeks • Eggs, in shell: 3 weeks • Salsa, opened: 1 to 2 weeks • Hummus, opened: 4 to 6 days • Crackers: 2 to 4 weeks Several Foods Such as Milk

Products can be changed to Dahi or home made Paneer Expiration dates are different. There are only a few products that actually require an expiration date, and you probably don’t even buy them - meal replacements, supplements, baby formula, pharmacist-sold foods and formulated liquid diets. No product should ever be consumed after the expiration date. But, there are some foods where the best before date really does matter. Foods with a lot of pathogens, like packaged deli meats, fresh meats, ground beef and cheese, can become unsafe to eat after the best before date, even if they look and smell fine.

Chips that are past their best before date probably won’t taste as good, but could quickly become unsafe to eat if too many people are sticking their hands in the bag, or double dipping in the salsa. If you’re unsure, it’s always better not to take any chances. When in doubt, throw it out! Measures are being taken to bring in a term called “ Best Taste “ rather than “ Best before “ The Collective Goal is to Reduce food waste by proper labelling and Education Be Creative in buying small amounts of fresh produce and learn simple steps to Re Utilize the food or convert it in to other eating modalities

So, here are all the things you probably didn’t know, and definitely should, about the dates on your food.some times it is written Best before 1/3, one does not understand if it is 3 Rd January or 1st March. Proper information is necessary First of all, there’s a huge difference between best before dates and expiration dates. The best before date tell you how long the food keeps its flavour and nutritional value if it’s stored properly. It has nothing to do with the food’s safety. In other words, you won’t get sick if the best before date has passed, it just won’t taste as fresh. According to food waste ex-

Whiten your teeth with

strawberry

No tobacco: Tobacco stain the teeth and it is hard to remove the stain left by consuming any form of tobacco. So quit the habit of smoking and consuming all tobacco products. Strawberry paste: Mash three strawberries in a cup and add half teaspoon of baking soda in it. Clean your teeth with this paste few times a week. The citric acid present in strawberries help in removing stains and plaque from teeth. Cold-pressed oil: Sesame oil, coconut oil and olive oil contain lipids that stop bacteria from sticking to the walls of your teeth. Take a spoonful of any of these oil and swish it inside your mouth for a minute. Spit it out and rinse your mouth well preferably with lukewarm water. Rich in antioxidants and vitamin E, these oils will help in whitening the teeth. Apple Cider Vinegar: Whiten your teeth with ACV which has natural whitening properties. Mix two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar with half teaspoon of baking soda and use it few times a week to remove surface stains. Mint leaves: Mix two grams of crushed mint leaves with two to three tablespoons of coconut oil to make a whitening paste. Coconut oil is a natural emulsifier which helps in reducing stains and fighting off plaque and cavity causing bacteria. The mint leaves keep your breath fresh throughout the day. Baking soda paste: Take a teaspoon of baking soda and mix it to two teaspoons of water to make a paste. Brush your teeth few times a week with this paste and make your teeth brighter. Bleaching agent hydrogen peroxide can whiten your teeth very effectively. But it has some side effects too. So use it under the supervision of a good dentist. No aerated drinks: Regular consumption of carbonated drinks cause discoloration of teeth and enamel wear. Replace these unhealthy drinks with plain water to have healthy glittering teeth. None of the above techniques can do miracles overnight. You have to follow these procedures for a couple of weeks and decrease the frequency to once or twice a week to gain natural whitening. But, these natural whitening home remedies cannot replace brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing them on regular intervals with healthy toothpaste, soft bristled toothbrush and dental flosses. Make sure to visit your dentist on a regular basis for professional care of your teeth. Now a sparkling smile is not difficult to achieve. Sparkle up your teeth and keep smiling. Cortsey: TNN

Western Home Decor-How to decorate your home in Western Style!

So if you are planning to decorate your home in Western style that too matching with your pocket and looking like you live in a barn ! There are some few tips to help on your way to a beautifully decorated Western style home. • Consult any good decorator that will tell you how to start by keeping a focus on inspiration piece. It can be of architectural designs like a special art piece, fireplace or any beautiful view. If in your mind there is any inspiration piece that you cannot purchase it right way, decorate that piece in mind and purchase when you can. • Start the decoration with the paint color : Dark color make a small room look smaller so before making a selection of color always keep in mind the size of the room. Western color themes are cactus greens, sunset reds, earthy browns, clay yellows and deep sky blues. Paint is the easiest, most affordable way to set the stage for western decorating throughout your home. • Start with small, choose several pieces of room that you like: If you are starting it with a bathroom, then start with a cabinet hardware. There are many types of cabinet knobs and hardware in old western styles equipped with a shotgun shells, equestrian style, barb wire, using Conchos western belts and other items seen in the Horse show ring. The best part about this is that all of these are available in rustic Western themes, featuring sculptures, iconic symbols, and ranch capes cowboys. Choose the style that you like the best and gradually make an addition of some quality pieces. Soap dishes and dispensers, containers for bath items, and necessities like linens, bath mats and shower curtains can all be used to enhance the western theme. Spend the most money on the things you touch like towels, rugs and bathroom accessories to create a feeling of luxury. Hang western art work or rustic signs on large blank spaces; frame the bathroom mirror with old barn wood. • Decorating the Bedroom: If you are decorating a bed room, then make use of the western style photo frames and some small knick knacks to bring the western touch to the room. Table tops and shelves give a great look to homes for wrought iron sculpture and small collectibles like spurs, Stirrups and wagon wheels. Cowhide rugs and pillows enhance the western scheme. Add character with western sculptures or items like horseshoes, stirrups and wagon wheels. • Put more concentration on the artwork: Simple way to incorporate the western décor is to put focus on the artwork. color that you like the most and make it your color inspiration: If your son loves horses a cow boys then make your inspiration piece a western comforter and choose the color scheme as per that

compliments it. You can also make use of accent wall to bring another color into the room. You can use many different patterns and textures keeping in mind one color scheme it all works together.

• Pick furniture that goes with the size of the room; don’t fill a room with furniture that overpowers it.
