19th Annual Student Achievement Awards Gala

Written By: Rick Dhaliwal

T

he Indo-Canadian Business Association of British Columbia (ICBABC) held their 19th Annual Achievement Awards Ceremony at Aria Banquet Hall on Friday, May 11, 2018. This event was a huge success, with a sold-out crowd of over 600 people. Students were recognized for their academic excellence, leadership, athleticism, and community involvement. ICBABC was formed in 1992 and has established itself as a well respected nonprofit organization in the community. The directors of this group take pride in being able to give back to the community, to help recognize students and help them achieve their educational goals. Education is the key to bright futures and being part of each student’s journey is rewarding. Since its inception, ICBABC has raised almost $500,000 in scholarships and other projects. Each year the number of sponsors, scholarship applications and recipients are growing. The scholarships are provided in three areas: Academic, Sports, and Special Needs. The number of qualified applicants is impressive with students that have maintained very high marks and have also

volunteered in the community. These students come from across British Columbia. A sponsorship committee that is independent of the board processed over 140 applications this year and of those, 16 were selected. There were also many sponsors that stepped up to the plate to either donate funds or provide their services for the event. The comradery within the community is remarkable and it is our hope that we inspire our youth to make a difference in the future. ICBABC also started a collaboration with SFU for three years, where Punjabi classes are offered at the Surrey campus for the first time. ICBABC arranged a contribution of $30,000 ($10,000 for a period of three years). This commitment has now been fulfilled and it is our hope that the enrollment numbers remain positive and that the classes continue in the future. As we reflect on the event, we are very excited for 2019, where we will be celebrating our 20th anniversary. We look forward to meeting new students and receiving overwhelming support from the community by participating, donating, and attending this event. If you have any questions or wish to become involved as a sponsor or volunteer, please visit our website at www.ICBABC.com and visit the contact section. Photo Credit: ICBA

YOUR GUIDE TO BUYING SUPER VISA INSURANCE IN CANADA Italy, to name a few) you can still apply for the Super Visa if you wish to stay longer than six months.

Sandeep Ahuja

E

very year, approximately 35 million visitors including a wide range of students, businessmen, temporary workers and tourists travel to Canada to share this country’s abundant opportunities and vibrant culture. Depending upon different countries around the globe where you live and your reason for coming to Canada, the entry requirements may vary. In some cases this will mean applying for a visitor’s visa. While there are many countries whose residents are exempt from these types of visas, if you plan on an extended stay, you’ll need to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa. You may tend to think that there is a backlog of applicants for this type of special visa. However, eligible parents or grandparents have very bright chances of a fast approval by applying for a Super Visa. This new type of visa has been in existence for over six years (started- Dec 1, 2011) and is already proving to be an extremely popular option that is reuniting families across Canada. What is a Super Visa? Current Canadian immigration policy allows visitors to stay for only six months at a time under the multiple entry visa. If a visitor wants to stay longer, they’ll have to apply for an extension which also means paying an additional fee. However, if you are a parent or a grandparent who would like to visit family for an extended stay, then you can apply for a Super Visa. The Super Visa allows you to stay for up to two years at a single stretch without need of any renewal. The application process for this group of temporary residents is a lot quicker. Typically, it may take eight weeks to get a Super Visa. The goal is to get families together as quickly as possible! The Super Visa also allows multiple visits throughout the duration of the visa. To be eligible for a Super Visa, you’ll need to provide the following information: • The person’s ties to the home country • The purpose of the visit • The person’s family and financial situation • A written commitment of financial support from the Canadian child or grandchild who meets a minimum income threshold • Complete Immigration Medical Examination • Proof of Canadian medical insurance (very important) Keep in mind that even if you’re from a country that doesn’t require a visa, (United States, France, Germany and

What is Super Visa Insurance? The Canadians enjoy the benefits of a first class health care system that provides full coverage for all of its citizens. Just because the Canadians are covered, it doesn’t mean that visitors will be able to take advantage of the same benefits. In fact, any visitor who needs any kind of medical care will have to pay for it out of his/her own pocket. The only exception would be if that visitor had a traveller’s insurance. With the Super Visa application, this type of insurance policy is a requirement. An applicant for a Super Visa must submit proof that they have medical insurance. That policy will need to be: 1. valid for at least one year from their date of entry into Canada 2 provide a minimum of $100,000 in coverage 3. covers the person for health care, hospitalization and repatriation (returning to their home country) Since you have to get this policy in place before applying for the Super Visa, there are refunds available in case you are denied the Super Visa status. This insurance policy should also be issued from a Canadian insurance company which eventually, protects the government and the applicant by making the direct payment process easier. Depending upon the circumstances, you could also obtain Super Visa insurance if you have a preexisting condition. It will depend upon what that condition is and, whether or not is has been stable for 3 to 6 months. Is Super Visa Insurance Worth It? Undeniably, at some point in our lives, we’re going to need healthcare. But a major question is - ‘when to buy insurance’ and ‘how much will it cost’? A visitor coming to Canada is not required to purchase insurance; only those applying for a Super Visa need a policy. However, when you consider that an average day in a hospital could cost above $3,000, (not to mention the additional charges to return to your home country) you can see that a medical emergency could quickly wipe out your savings if you aren’t covered by insurance. Then, why take the risk? Visa insurance policies are a low cost way of providing peace of mind to any Canadian visitor. A simple neglect to purchase adequate insurance may sometimes lead to hundreds/thousands of dollars at stake during a medical emergency. But prior to purchasing insurance, it is extremely important to ascertain the medical history of your parents for any pre-existing medical conditions. Your parents can either tell this to your insurance advisor or, you can confirm the same from your parents and convey to the advisor.

Wine less than 5 Ounces advised Led by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, this Study is the first comprehensive analysis to look at the effect of adopting lowrisk lifestyle factors on life expectancy in the U.S., a country that has a shorter average life expectancy (79.3 years) than almost all other high-income nations. The researchers analyzed 34 years of data from 78,865 women and 27 years of data from 44,354 men and defined the five low-risk lifestyle factors as not smoking, a low body mass index (18.5-24.9 kg/m2), at least 30 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous physical activity, moderate alcohol intake (up to about one 5-ounce glass of wine per day for women, or up to two glasses for men), and a healthy diet For the participants who didn’t adopt any of these low-risk lifestyle factors, the researchers estimated that life expectancy at age 50 was 29 years for women and 25.5 years for men.

16

JUNE 2018

However, for those who adopted all five of the low-risk lifestyle factors, the researchers estimated that life expectancy at age 50 was 43.1 years for women and 37.6 years for men.

For women this meant on average an extra 14 years of life, and for men an extra 12 years, with the combination of all five healthy behaviors linked with the most additional years of life gained.

The researchers also found that both women and men who maintained the healthiest lifestyles were 82% less likely to die from cardiovascular disease and 65% less likely to die from cancer, when compared with those with had the least healthy lifestyles. “This study underscores the importance of following healthy lifestyle habits for improving longevity in the U.S. population,” commented senior author Frank Hu. “However, adherence to healthy lifestyle habits is very low. Therefore, public policies should put more emphasis on creating healthy food ... and social environments to support and promote healthy diet and lifestyles.” The results can be found published online in the journal Circulation

Everything You Need to Know About Getting Braces On ished treatment in 12 to 24 months. Getting your braces taken off is just as painless as getting braces on. After we congratulate you, we’ll slide your wires out and use special instruments to remove the brackets. Then, we’ll get rid of the adhesive and polish and clean your teeth. You can take all the time you want to check out your stunning smile in the mirror. If you’re up for it, we’ll snap some photos to add you to the super prestigious Aura Orthodontics’ Wall of Fame. When your braces treatment is complete, we’ll fit you for a retainer. Wearing a retainer is the only way to hold your teeth in their new places and maintain your results for life. Usually, patients use a retainer full-time at first and then transition to using it only at night. When you see how awesome your outcome from braces is, a retainer won’t seem like a big deal.

Dr Vishal Sharma BSc, DDS, Cert. Ortho. FRCD(C), FCDS(BC)

Cont. from last Edition Your Treatment: Getting Braces Put On, Adjustments and the Big Reveal We know, we know. There are wires, brackets, bands and tools galore at our offices and that isn’t exactly the most reassuring assortment of items but we promise, getting braces put on doesn’t hurt at all and there are no shots involved. After you’ve had your consultation and Dr. Sharma or Dr. Lin has developed a customized diagnosis and treatment plan for you, you’ll hop up in our chair and one of the Aura team members will polish your pearly whites. We’ll apply a special solution that lightly roughens the surface of your teeth so that the glue can penetrate and your braces will stay on. Once it does its job, we wash it off, dry the teeth and apply a conditioner. Next, we place the brackets, which already have the adhesive on them, one by one, removing excess glue as we go and hardening them with a light. When the brackets are where we want them, we run the wire through them, secure the wire with elastics and let you ad-

mire your new tooth accessories. We’ll give you all of the information you need to take care of your braces and we’ll probably call you later to make sure everything’s going okay. That’s it. Getting braces on doesn’t actually feel like much of anything, though your teeth might be sensitive for a few days after. If you want to be extra prepared and find out exactly what you’re getting into, you can even watch a video of Dr. Sharma putting braces on a real patient. Throughout your treatment, you’ll come in for regular adjustments. Appointments are typically spaced about four to six weeks apart but they can be more or less frequent depending on your needs. At your visits, we’ll make the necessary tweaks and keep an eye on your progress. If you have ques-

What to Eat With Braces Getting braces on doesn’t mean you’ll have to give up all of your favorite foods. You can still eat the majority of them with a few exceptions. However, you’ll want to watch your chewing and biting technique so you don’t damage your brackets or wires. Never bite into food with your front teeth. Instead, break or cut up food into bite-sized pieces and chew with your back teeth. Making things as easy to eat as possible will keep your braces in top-notch shape. Cont. on next Edition

riti Sanon says working on the Bollywood comic caper Arjun Patiala was an exciting journey but she doesn’t find comedy an easy genre. Maddock films is bringing actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh back in uniform, this time with Kriti and actor Varun Sharma, for a laugh riot. “‘Arjun Patiala’ was such an exciting journey. Comedy is not an easy genre, and we have added a twist to it. Diljit and Varun have a great comic timing and it was a constant laugh riot on the set,” Kriti said in a statement. Dinesh Vijan, who is producing the film with Bhushan Kumar, said: “Diljit will be seen in the uniform but very different from his avatar in his first Hindi film outing, ‘Udta Punjab’. “This ‘police wallah’ is a laugh a minute character with swag.” Diljit said: “‘Arjun Patiala’ is very quirky. It’s a film that has action, romance and comedy but with a spin on it. It was a blast shooting it and I hope audiences love it as much.” Varun will be seen as a police official with a sarcastic tongue and an arrogant stride, who goes by the name of Onida Singh. “I’m very excited to see the audience’s reactions as it’s very special. They’ve given me so much love and appreciation, I want to make sure they have a great time at the theatre,” he said. Courtesy: IANS

Anna Faris: I Have Stopped Googling Myself

A

nna Faris says she has made a conscious effort to stay away from the social media chatter surrounding her personal life. The 41-year-old actor, who announced her separation from Chris Pratt in August last year, says she realised after a point of time that she does not need to know everything that is being talked about her online. “I think that I just sort of learned to not Google myself, and when my sweet assistant is like, ‘Look what just popped up.’ I’m like, ‘F**k off. I love you but I don’t know if I need to know everything’,” Faris told Marie Claire magazine. Recently, comments by Pratt, 38, that going through a divorce “sucks” had invited lot of criticism. But the “Mom” actor feels her ex’s remarks may have been blown out of proportion. “It feels like it’s more dramatic than it is. Chris and I have a great friendship and Jack is so happy and so loved,” she said. The former couple has five-year-old son, Jack together. Courtesy: PTI

History of Gol Gappe, Phuchka and even Pani Puri

T

he origin of ‘Gol Gappe’ can be traced back to Magadha region, India, when the puritans existed. Magadha is present day South Bihar where the ‘water bread’ is popularly known as ‘Phoolki’. Its literal meaning points the fact that it might have existed from Varanasi. Little is known about the history of ‘Gol Gappe’ but it is considered to be the king of Indian snacks. In West Bengal, Kolkata, the water bread or Gol Gappe is known as ‘Puchka’. Most regions in India have their own variations of Puchka but it is most popular in Kolkata. What is Gol Gappe known in Lucknow? It is very interesting to note that Gol Gappe is allotted different names in various regions of India. In Lucknow, it is given the name as ‘pani ke bataashe’. It means the crispy round preparation served with spicy water. The one who serves ‘pani ke bataashe’ makes a hole in the ‘Bataashe’ by using the thump and fills it up with boiled

pees and then dips in the spicy and tangy water. Panipuri has various names, depending on the region. In Haryana it is called paani ke patashe in Madhya

Pradesh fulki in Uttar Pradesh golgappa, in West Bengal, Bangladesh, and Nepal, phuchka in parts of Odisha Gupchup, in parts of Gujarat, pakodi in parts of Bihar ,South Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh, gup chup. They are also commonly known as gol gappay in the Punjab region

of Pakistan Puchka differs from panipuri in terms of content and taste. It uses a mixture of boiled gram and mashed potatoes as the filling and is tangy rather than sweetish while the water is sour and spicy. Courtesy:bragstreet.in

Make Time for Meditation

Here are some simple practical techniques to get meditation into your schedule rather than schedule for it separately. managing our emotions. If you are in a bad mood Exhale deeply; as much as you can, throw the air out. With the air, the mood will be thrown out too, because breathing carries the mood. And, then expel the breath as far as possible. Contract the belly in; don’t inhale for a few seconds. Then, allow the body to inhale deeply - as much as you can. Again, stop for a few seconds. The gap should be the same as when you retain the breath out. Exhale totally and inhale totally, and make a rhythm. You will feel a change immediately coming into your whole being. The mood will disappear and a new climate will enter you.

WRITTEN BY Amrit Sadhana

T

here is a sudden interest in meditation and wellbeing all over the world. This is no surprise because the more life becomes hectic there’s more yearning for peace and relaxation. The modern mind is bombarded with information from the electronic as well print media. This creates a problem because there is no time to digest it. In the past, this was just the reverse. There was less information and more time to assimilate it - so, there were silent spaces in people’s minds. Today, our lifestyle has changed 180 degrees: much of the information remains undigested. It is as if you go on eating and stuffing your body. That which is not digested by the body will prove to be poisonous. A really healthy person is one who takes 50 per cent of his/her time to assimilate their experiences. 50 per cent action, 50 per cent inaction - that is, the right balance. 50 per cent mental activity and 50 per cent meditation is the cure for today’s men and women. Meditation, need of the hour Meditation is the dire need for contemporary life and also humanity. What is meditation? It is nothing but a time when you can relax utterly into yourself, and when you close the doors of your senses to the outside stimulus. You are alone in your innermost being, relaxed, at home. In these moments, all that has become accumulated is assimilated and that which is worthless is thrown out. Meditation functions like a double-edged sword: on the one hand, it assimilates all that is nourishing. On the other, it throws out all that is junk. But, who has time to meditate? People have to manage so many things that everybody feels the day is not long enough. In these changed times the concept of meditation has taken a summersault. Now, people need meditation that can be woven into their daily routine, which means they should be able to meditate while doing their job. Sounds impossible? Not at all, if you do it the Osho way. Osho has changed the whole structure of meditation and has created hundreds of short techniques for busy people. These techniques can be practiced while you

Gibberish and silence This is a perfect method when the mind is too much stressed and you can’t think coherently. Close your eyes and begin to make nonsensical sounds. Just speak any language that you don’t know! Allow yourself to express whatever needs to be expressed within you. Let your body express the accumulated stress, too. Imagine you are emptying a garbage can. After 10 minutes, sit silently. The relaxation and silence that follow will be magical.

are working, talking, walking, or doing any kind of activity. Because, basically meditation is not an activity, it is being aware of your activity. If you are watchful of your acts at physical, emotional and mental level, you are in meditation. Here are some delightful and effective Osho techniques for people who have everything, but time. Razor’s edge This can be done while you are booting the computer, waiting for the elevator, and so on. This is literally a one-minute meditation. Hold your watch in front of you. Look at the second hand, witness its movement and try to go on witnessing it. You will find that you can watch for 2-4 seconds - and, the witness is gone, some other thought has come. Then you will be a witness for 4-5 seconds and forget again. In completing one minute you will lose it two, four, or 10 times. If you practice it every day, the span of your attention will increase. If you can watch the second hand for 60 seconds, you will feel integrated. Rub your ear lobes When you are feeling sad, worried,

or angry, hold your ear lobes and rub them hard; there is no need to pierce the ears. You will find a change in your state of mind. Warm hands, cool head Physiologists agree that if you work with the hands, you can change the energy that moves from the head. Your right hand is joined with your left brain whereas your left hand is joined with your right brain. Try this: whenever you feel that there is too much thinking, and you cannot stop it, rub both your hands fast, make them hot by rubbing, and suddenly you will feel the thinking has stopped, the energy is moving in the hands. This is the best medicine for people who cannot sleep - better than any tranquilliser. Just close your eyes and rub your hands, and feel them getting warmer and warmer and warmer. Support it by your imagination - see they are getting warmer. When the hands are warm, the head becomes cool. Now, you can sleep like a baby! Throwing the bad mood Breathing is a powerful tool we have, and it can be used intelligently for

Talk telegraphically For one day, talk telegraphically. Use absolutely only the necessary words, as if you are sending sms. Use only the essential words. Your words will have more power as you will be uttering them consciously, and the impact will be deep. Waiting, the best use of time While waiting focus the attention on yourself rather than the person you are waiting for Waiting is not a futile exercise; when you are waiting, you become more alert Waiting is a relaxed, non-goal-oriented attitude Waiting is a great quality: it requires deep patience, it is great trust The moments of waiting are moments of meditation. Because you are waiting, expectant, your mind stops functioning. You are so concentrated in your waiting that there is no energy left for the mind - that is the secret, the magic.

How much sugar should we eat per day… Part 4 and cholesterollevels. Keto diet show a dramatic increase in HDL (good cholesterol) and a decrease in LDL (bad cholesterol). Studies have shown that low-carb diets show better improvement in blood pressure over other diets.

Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Health Coach of University of Victoria

Cont. from last edition In extremely rare cases, very low-carb diets can cause a serious condition called ketoacidosis. This condition seems to be more common in lactating women and can be fatal if left untreated. However, lowcarb diets are safe for the majority of people. Ketogenic diet: The Ketogenic Diet or – Keto Diet – limits carbohydrate intake to around 50g per day or 5% energy intake. It is much similar to LCHF diet. Strict LCHF diet is <20-gram carbs per day, Moderate LCHF 20-50 grams per day and Liberal LCHF 50100 grams per day. The ketogenic diet is a low carb, moderate protein, and high fat diet which puts the body into a metabolic state known as ketosis. It’s based around the principle that your body was designed to run more efficiently as a fat burner than a sugar burner. When we eat something that is high in carbs (that yummy Jaleb), our body produce glucose and insulin to digest it in the cells. When we eat fat along with carb, then carb is used as fuel by the body and fat is stored, which results in weight gain. Extra glucose also gets converted into fat which is then stored and body does not use it for energy because we are gulping new carbs in abundance daily. This diettrains our bodies to begin to stop relying on glucose and to start relying on fats for fuel. When you lower your intake of carbs, the body begins to look for an alternative energy source and your body enters a metabolic state known as ketosis. Ketosis is the main purpose in Ketogenic diet When your body is in a state of

Always eat stomach full. Eat your Breakfast like a Prince, your Lunch like a King and your supper like a pauper. The only rider is avoiding simple carbohydrates and restrict complex carbohydrates to 60 gm per day plus lavish amount of protein and unsaturated fat. This is a healthy thing to do.

ketosis, it produces ketones. Ketones occur from the breakdown of fat in the liver. Then body start using ketones as a replacement of carbs. This allows the fat cells to release the water they are storing (it’s why you first see a drop-in water weight) and then the fat cells are able to enter the bloodstream and head to the liver to be converted into ketones which is a fuel for the body to stay alive. This is the end goal of the keto diet. You don’t enter ketosis by starving your body. You enter ketosis by starving your body of carbohydrates. Weight Loss Keto diet is one of the most effective ways to lose weight in a healthy manner. On keto, your insulin (the fat storing hormone) levels drop which allows your fat cells to travel to the liver and get converted into ketones; which are used as fuel. Keto Controls Blood Sugar: Unfortunately, many people suffer from diabetes which is caused by a body’s inability to handle insulin. Keto naturally lowers blood sugar levels due to not eating as many carbs so your body can’t produce glucose. Studies have proved that Keto have huge benefits for people that are pre-diabetic or have Type II diabetes. So Keto diet helps to maintain more consistent blood sugar levels. Foods to Avoid • Grains - wheat, corn, rice, cereal •S ugar - honey, agave, maple syrup • Fruit - apples, bananas, oranges • Tubers - potato, yams • Legumes- beans Foods to Eat • Meats - fish, beef, lamb, poultry, egg • Leafy Greens - spinach, kale • Above ground vegetables - broccoli, cauliflower • High fat dairy - hard cheeses, high fat cream, butter • Nuts and seeds - macadamias, walnuts, sunflower seeds • Avocado and berries - raspber-

Some diets focus on reducing your appetite, while others focus on restricting calories, carbs or fat. Though all of them claim to be number one, yet it is hard to decide which one is healthy, worth a try and not a fad diet. ries, blackberries, and other low glycemic impact berries e.g. blue berries, black berries and raspberries. • Sweeteners - stevia, erythritol, monk fruit, and other low-carb sweeteners • Other fats - coconut oil, high-fat salad dressing, saturated fats, etc. In keto you need to avoid wheat (bread, pasta, cereals), starch (potatoes, beans, legumes) and fruit. There are small exceptions like avocado, star fruit, and berries . It is one of the best diet to lose weight permanently in a healthy manner. On keto diet, your insulin (the fat storing hormone) levels drop whiich allows your fat to travel to the liver and get converted into ketones. Your body effectively becomes a fat burning machine. Keto Control Blood Sugar: Unfortunately, many people suffer from diabetes which is caused by your bodys’ inability to handle insulin. Keto has been shown to have huge benefits for people that are pre-diabetic or have Type II diabetes.Because the ketogenic diet helps you to maintain more consistent blood sugar levels you find that you have more control of your everyday life while on keto. Keto control Cholesterol & Blood Pressure The ketogenic diet has been shown to improve triglyceride levels

Insulin Resistance Insulin resistance is the reason why people suffer from Type II diabetes. The ketogenic diet helps people lower their insulin levels to healthy ranges so that they are no longer in the group of people that are on the cusp of acquiring diabetes. What Do I Eat on a Keto Diet? Unfortunately, on the ketogenic diet you can’t eat whatever you want. However, unlike many other diets, once you find yourself in ketosis your cravings for the things you can’t eat usually disappear and if they don’t? The Dukan Diet Dukan diet is a high-protein, low-carb diet. Being sugar deficient, it helps in weight loss and to stay fit. It’s a low-calorie diet and can be split into four phases — two weight loss phases and two maintenance phases. Each phase has its own dietary pattern. The weight loss phases are primarily based on eating unlimited high-protein foods and mandatory oat bran. The other phases involve adding non-starchy vegetables at first, then some carbs and fat. Later on, there will be fewer and fewer “pure protein days” to maintain your new weight and stay healthy. Also, many other studies have shown that high-protein, low-carb diets can have major weight loss benefits in particular. This diet promotesa higher metabolic rate, a decrease in the hunger hormone ghrelin[ released by stomach walls] and an increase in the fullness hormones GLP-1, PYY and CCK. Peptide YY: is a hormone concerned with hunger and the lack of hunger (satiety). Soon after eating, PYY is secreted into the blood by cells lining the lower small intestine (the ileum) and the colon. The release of PYY begins before nutrients arrive in the lower small intestine and the colon. Cont. in next edition

The paleo diet is based on eating whole foods and avoiding grains and dairy. It has several health benefits, including weight loss.

A Girl in a Whirl Contd. from previous issue (Part 21) The other day, my mother-in-law brought me my meal and screamed at me, “Your limbs are not broken. Get down and help Daljit in domestic chores.” And she left. I kept quiet. I had my meal and went down to help Daljit. I cleaned kitchen but didn’t talk to anyone. After cleaning kitchen, I came upstairs. I had plenty of my clothes to wash. I had no idea how to wash clothes. I gathered all my clothes and took them to a room that everybody called ‘laundry room’. I didn’t know how to operate those machines. I left my clothes there and came back to my room. I read ‘Sukhmani Sahib’ and slept again. After coming to Canada, I had started feeling like sleeping more than usual. I was missing my parents and siblings a lot. My new responsibility My parents must be very worried about me ‘cause I hadn’t talked to them for several days. I began crying like a baby. I kept crying for long, and don’t remember how long I sobbed and fell asleep. Sam came in the evening. After taking a shower and changing his clothes, he asked me to go downstairs with him. He took me to the laundry room. “Learn properly today how to do the laundry. My mom is not your maid.”, Sam hollered and taught me how to operate them. “Jerk! -- barks on me as the old

witch trains him!”, I talked to myself in my mind. I responded in closedmouth yeses pretending that I had learned everything. I was about to go upstairs when Sam yelled at me, “Go to the kitchen and help bhabi. They are not your father’s servants.” I was infuriated but I controlled myself. I went to the kitchen to help Daljit and Sam’s mother without uttering a word. How much I had changed! Sam had spoken against my dad, and I had tolerated that silently. I served food to all. All of them went into the TV room. Nobody invited me there. I had my dinner in the kitchen and went upstairs into my room. I was missing my dad very badly. I recalled him and wept a lot. Sam came in about forty minutes, after boozing a bit over his limit. I told Sam that I wanted to call my parents at Ludhiana but he was completely out of his senses to listen to me. I was only a sex-object for him. After satisfying his lust, he began snoring like a horse. I kept weeping and couldn’t sleep until two or three o’clock. The next day, when Sam came home from work in the evening, I was working in the kitchen. Daljit and Sam’s mother were also there. “Sam, I want to talk to my mom. Call her in Ludhiana and let me talk.”, I requested Sam Sam looked at his mother standing behind me. God knows what she signalled, he asked me to go upstairs. I went upstairs. Sam

also came up. He closed the door and slapped me very hard. I almost fainted. I thought Sam was going to give me his phone. “You are dead for them and they are no more for you. Be cautious if you dare ask me again to call them.”, Sam held me from my hair, stopped me from falling and slapped me even harder repeatedly. I fell on the floor with a thud. I held Sam’s feet and pleaded, “Sam, don’t be so cruel to me.” “I am in touch with them.”, Sam said and went to take a shower. After taking a shower, Sam began changing his clothes. I begged him. But he didn’t listen to me and went downstairs. I wept very bitterly. I was lying on the floor weeping and literally asking god to punish me with death instead. Sam came up inebriated. As he wanted to lift me from my arm, I pushed him away. He came towards me again in anger. “Don’t come near!”, I pushed him away harder and said. “Why not? Is your darling coming today?”, Sam gargled, and lunged towards me. I slapped him so hard that he fell at least six feet away from me. It was almost more than one and a half months I was living in that hell. He was so much drunk that he couldn’t get up despite his best efforts. After getting exhausted from his unsuccessful attempts to get up, he started snoring right there. I was terribly scared what had happened. I dragged Sam and, with utmost efforts, put him on the bed. Father- is a son’s first hero; a daughter’s first love.

A

daughter may outgrow the lap of a father but she’ll never outgrow his heart. A son is a love that lasts a life time. Bringing up a child with healthy habits, great discipline and a successful career is no easy task. A father’s deep affection to his children, offers a sense of impeccable security and assurance that no one else can give. The heart of a child is beautifully designed to respond to that love; it’s a bond strong enough to last more than a lifetime. Three persons are very quintessential in the life of a child, namely:

you’ve always wanted to try. Sometimes there are memories waiting to be made right in your own backyard

A Father, a Mother and a Teacher. Experience: A memory made together is a gift that can last a lifetime. Consider treating Dad to something he’s never done. Take him on a special trip (even a short road-trip!) to a new place, or surprise him with a unique experience – skydiving, horseback riding, canoeing, bird-watching. Plan a weekend outing to a local event

Sanjay Dutt signs the Hindi remake of Telugu hit Prasthanam

A

fter a gap of seven long years, Sanjay Dutt is all set to return to producing a film. The actor will be seen producing the remake of 2010 Telugu hit, Prasthanam. The actor will not just be producing the film but will also be seen playing the lead role along with Ali Fazal and Amyra Dastur, who will be essaying the role of his son and his son’s lover respectively. Deva Katta will be directing the film. He is the same man who directed the original film in Telugu. Deva has made certain changes in the script keeping in mind that he has to cater to an audience across India. The name of the movie has been retained. The Hindi remake will also be called Prasthaanam. It is a political drama that is scheduled

to go on floors during the first week of June in Mumbai.

Previously, Sanjay Dutt has collaborated with Sanjay Gupta on

the action-thriller Zinda in 2006 as production-presenter. Dutt was the associate producer of Gupta’s Shootout at Lokhandwala in 2007 and Dus Kahaniyaan in the same year. Sanjay Dutt also produced David Dhawan’s Rascals in 2011. But ever since 2011, the actor has not produced any project. Now, he will be seen returning to the business of producing films with Prasthaanam. The Telugu version of Sanjay’s upcoming project was a blockbuster down South and bagged three Filmfare awards (South). The story revolved around exposing the connection between politicians and businessmen. Well, we are super excited to watch Sanjay Dutt back in action, we are sure you are too! Courtesy: FILMFARE

Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem Got Equal Paychecks For Cannes Movie

T

he entertainment industry has a long way to go when it comes to pay disparity. However, that isn’t the case with popular Hollywood couple Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem as the actress has revealed that the duo received equal paychecks for their new movie Everybody Knows. Cruz discussed her and Bardem’s salary for the movie at its premiere at the 71st Cannes Film Festival , reports Variety. When asked if the couple both received the equal paychecks for their latest movie, Cruz broke out a sly smile and replied: ‘Actually, yes.’ The Oscar-winning actress then

spoke about how she works with her real-life partner, who she first collaborated with in 1992 film ‘Jamon Jamon’. “We don’t take the characters home at the end of the day. We have similar ways of work. The fact that we know each other and trust each other helps,” Cruz said. Cruz, 44, admitted that she had a different approach to roles when she was younger. “When I was in my 20s, I thought the more I would torture myself and the more I would stay in character for months, the better the result would be. I learned it’s not really related to that. I have a life and I have a job. That allows me to jump from reality to fiction,” she said. Courtesy: ANI

Forget the gadget world and indulge in some special talks. You will surely have a lot to share and lot to express to each other. 2. secrets of people who stay effortlessly slim

T

here are people out there who seem to look and feel good effortlessly. If you’ve ever wondered what their secrets are, a new study may have uncovered a couple of clues. “Most slim people don’t employ restrictive diets or intense health regimes to stay at a healthy weight,” Dr Brian Wansink, the study’s coauthor, said in a statement. “Instead, they practise easy habits like not skipping breakfast, and listening to inner cues.” It appears maintaining simple, healthy routines may be one overarching rule to easily maintaining good health. Researchers analysed the habits of 147 adults who participated in the study. Registered users responded to questions about exercise, diet and daily lifestyle habits. The participants’ responses highlighted one major takeaway for healthy living -routine is key. For many, routines are a necessity to success. When healthy habits are built-in to a person’s schedule, they become second nature, and feel less chore like. While adding new habits to your lifestyle won’t exactly feel natural or necessarily simple at first, the more you continue to include them, the easier they’ll be able to do. Here are five simple and healthy habits thin people enforce in their daily routines...

our bodies and brains, including reducing stress and depression symptoms as well as the risk of diabetes and a host of other conditions. One more really cool side effect of habitual exercise is that it’ll make you crave a healthier diet. That’s a win-win for weight loss. The endorphin rush you get from a sprint around the neighbourhood might help you resist temptation, whether that’s alcohol or a big slice of chocolate cake. THEY HAVE A SCALE : The people of the slim group check in with them selves, including the use of weekly weigh-ins. About 50 per cent said they weighed themselves at least once a week. THEY DON’T RESTRICT WHAT THEY EAT : According to the research, 44 per cent of participants reported at least one ‘non-restrictive strategy’ to their eating, such as listening to inner cues, eating high quality and lowprocessed foods and cooking at home. All three of these practices are proven to lead to healthier lives. If you’re on the job and hungry after lunch, consider cutting out vending machine snacks for more nutritious ones you bring from home. THEY EAT BREAKFAST : A whopping 96 per cent of study participants reported eating breakfast nearly every day. While it’s up for debate whether breakfast is the most important meal of the day, there’s no denying it’s significant. Research finds that those who forgo a morning meal tend to consume more calories at lunchtime. Skipping breakfast is also associated with increased weight and increased weight gain over time. This doesn’t necessarily mean that pushing past those scrambled eggs causes people to gain; eating breakfast could, instead, really be a sign of living healthfully. It’s routine, people. ay be a father is a poor man all through his life but a father will try to work to exhaustion to give his children every richness of the world possible. His intentions are beyond an iota of doubt. A father is a person who brings all the comfort, pleasure and money for all the activities of daily living (ADL) to his children by working very hard and teaching every beautiful thing of the world so as to hammer out, as you grow up, the best human being out of your personality. A father is in his happiest state of mind when he watches his son/daughter growing as responsible as he has always wanted. A father never feel defeated when he experience tat his son is outsmarting him in any walk of life.

Fathers’ Day in Canada: Father’s Day is celebrated worldwide to appreciate the contribution that fathers and father figures make to the lives of their dear children. This day applauds fatherhood and male parenting. Although it is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide, many countries

observe this day on the third Sunday in June including Canada. Father’s Day is celebrating its 18th anniversary this year on June 17, in Canada. A Father always expects from his children ut infra: Be nice to Others: A father always wants his children to behave very well with others because that is the reflection of how a person has been brought up. Being good to everyone will surely make your father be at cloud nine and feel satisfied. Deal elders with courtesy: Every father wants that his children know how to behave in a courteous way with people elder to them. And, if you can make your elders feel nice and comfortable with your behavior then your father is undoubtedly going to feel proud of you. Manage things the way your father used to do: All your childhood you have seen your father managing every occasion in the best sensible way and he must have expected his children to be good at managing life ,by involving his spouse in the most efficient way. Learn from the mistakes your father did. Learn from bad decisions he made. Do not vicariously criticize him unequivocally, as may be, those decisions were taken in the corridor of uncertainly. It hurts a father when the kids squarely blames him. Balance parents, work and Family: Our main goal , in this world, is to be in a state of selfactualization i.e. to be blissfully happy and in fact everything that we do is just to make ourselves happy. A father has always maintain a kind of soothing balance between work and family

AS I compose myself to pen this article, being a very emotional subject, I could not help rummaging through my tween years when my reverend father took initial control of me to understand the nuances of mother tongue i.e. Punjabi and inculcate in me the good daily habits – along with my mum - which are the sheer basis of my personality even now. Whatever I am today, I owe my living to my parents. The best Thank You, we can give to our dads on Fathers’ Day is to make them feel proud of you by virtue of your commendable deeds. A father does not like that any one beat him by being better, but rejoices when his own children do better than him as likes to be known in the society as a father of his precocious and prodigious sons or daughters

Like every dad, my dad was like a coconut, he was hard on me from outside so that I can get good grades and behave well, but he was very sweet from inside. During my tween and teen years, I used to think, my dad should be sweeter to me like my mum, yet now I feel he was always right. Many times, on my mild disapproval on certain issues, he used to say that, I quote” When you will become a dad, you will understand that I am right. Now I feel his advice was hundred per cent correct. Though he happened to be one of the poorest fathers financially, yet he left his children the richest inheritance of how to work, behave, live and lead life in this materialistic world. and he would be a proud father if you can prove to be a chip of the old block. Love and respect your Mother and siblings; A father will love you and be proud of you because you are being respectful, loving and caring towards your mother and siblings. So, learn to be good to your mother as your father has been all these years, and he will be proud to have a son/daughter like you. Believe in your Father’s experience and Decisions there of: Often times children start overlooking their father’s decision after becoming independent, but that’s one of the biggest discouragement any father feels deep inside his heart. Before starting any big project, ask your father, he will feel happy about it and you will gain out of it. Love and guide your kids: A father will respect and appreciate watching his children being loving and affectionate towards their kids. He has always done everything to make his children happy and now he will be a proud father to see his children performing as a responsible and caring father. Work dedicatedly towards your goal: After becoming a father our achievements influence our children and they successfully make forays in their chosen field and register even better results. A father love watching his son/daughter escalate, rung after rung , up the ladder in life and working succeesively in the right direction of achieving his/her goals. Be a chip of the old block: As an adult ,take care of the family as your father set an example. Now that you are grown up, your father will be more than relaxed to see you taking the

WHEN I delve through my childhood, and as a father- nowadays- to my children things are pole apart. Time has changed and so the kids. Children should always remember that their blessed, reverend and alive “Parents” are not fore ever. Those who have their parents on their side are extremely fortunate and blessed ones. And those parents who are breathing in the same city and living separately-against their willare indeed unfortunate ones when kids are not on speaking terms with them. My whole body goes into trepidation, when I see some parents or single parent living alone or in long term facilities, sans money- haplessly and hopelessly- waiting vicariously for the death to happen

responsibility of the family. All through his life, your father has taken care of the family- with your mum- and now it is your turn to responsibly take care of everyone in the family. Your father will be more than happy about that Things that melt a Dad’s Heart: A father is a picture of love so strong, who carefully, silently and consciously steer the family ship and intervene and interfere with his better half to give shape to the career of his lovely children. And, these are just my words that are a shadow of my thankful heart and I will my deeds utter those words of gratitude sometimes in the near future. A Thank you note for the dad: Thank you, dad, for being my father, for teaching those extremely helpful lessons of life, for making me strong at every stage of my life, for being with me in every thick and thin as day follows night. Thank you, dad, as I can visualize the mental picture of all that you have been doing and all that you are doing and believe in me dad; all these sacrifices that you have done are never going to go in vain. I carry your DNA. By being successful, I will bring about the happiness that a soul like you [ every dad] deserves. Thank You, dad, for holding my little hands and take me to the divine connection to the Almighty and finding out everything about Him. It is you who instilled that faith in the Almighty that has made me feel strong, optimistic and confident every day. Thank you, dad, to make me feel happy and joyous for being successful in bringing about the best version of their children with all the sacrifices you have done all through their lives. A father is someone who creates a strong building block for kids, life and he is the one who teaches us all the basic lessons of life. Fathers’ day is around the corner and it is going to be celebrated on 17th of June. It would be a fabulously great idea to write some Father’s Day notes on this special day and let him know that the most precious thing that surrounds you is his love

A father is a person who brings all the happiness to his children by working hard and teaching every beautiful thing of the World. And, when they grow up, expects them to bring about one of the best human beings out of their personality, because they are known in the society to be sons/ daughters of so and so. A father is in his happiest state of mind when he watches his son/daughter find his/ her moorings and the mission of life is accomplished more likely to commit suicide; depending on the scale of their age cycle. They are vulnerable to being the victims of high level of aggressive behavior. • The root cause of poverty is, not being educated or skilled. It is usual that children follow their father- by example- when it comes to learning so many things so as to learn and then earn. For those children, who are given no time to learn from their father, it is likely for them to become casual with their education and so struggle neve leave them. • There is a chance that Drug and Alcohol may enter into the lives of some fatherless children, in case they fail to hold their nerve. • The whopping number of young criminals out there in the Jails vouch that most of these children are brought up in an environment without father and vulnerable get involved in such activities. • Out of fear of not being recognized as normal as others, these fatherless children drop out of schools. They prefer abandoning schooling rather than being bullied by their fellow classmates. And, this becomes the reason they do not get proper education.

Father vs Mother Mothers reading this article may be feeling little jealous now for lopsided view of mine in favor of a father but a mother scores better IN THE HEARTS OF THEIR CHILDREN though exceptions are there The role of a father has never been appreciated to the extent as that of the Mother; nevertheless, both play a very important role in the overall growth and development of a child. A child learns a lot of things in his life from father that nobody could ever teach. From the very childhood we start observing a lot of things from our father and inculcating them in our lives. There are an uncountable number of traits that we take from our father namely: • Fearlessness. • Ability to take challenges • Ability to Analyze • Being Responsible • Taking Care of Loved Ones in an affectionate manner • Respecting women Like in billions of cases, I easily envision the architect of my success is my father and my mother made it sure that happen by managing at micro and macro level.

Conclusion: There is nothing that can actually pay off for all the love and affection that a father bestows upon his children but yes there are things children can do to make their father feel happy and proud. That way he will feel that all of his investments be it emotional or financial is being paid off. On Father’s day let us pledge to be nice, gentle, cool, calm, courteous, composed, laborious, loving and that would be the greatest gift for any father. As all of you are aware and know this from your very childhood that a “Father” work for the family and not himself. He sacrifices everything; never had the privilege to sit quietly at home, like all the family did, with mother as an exception. And he works [ed] 7 days a week -day in and night out to make our lives better. I salute every dad. Let’s celebrate Father’s Day this year with sheen and lucre to feel thankful for this beautiful gift of God called “Father”. Words fail me, to thank my father who is in scintillating heaven at the lotus feet of Almighty, along with my mum, still wishing the best for me and my children; after all we proudly carry his DNA and he is proud of being the father and grand father of us. Long live every Dad, his better half and his perennial investment of life- the children!!!!

Those children who are being Fatherless: It has been found in various studies, that children who do not have their fathers with them are more likely to get involved in social ills like alcohol and drugs and are more likely to be struggling, go through mental and physical issues, drop out of schools, fall in bad company and much more. These children are vulnerable to being the victims of various psychological disorders including fear, low self confidence, and in facing people in an assertive manner. These children most often feel to be out of the society, this feeling that they have been abandoned prevails for whole of their life if not treated. WINGS Restaurants & Pubs Helps Prevent Animal Awareness with month-long Pints for Paws Fundraiser $1 from every house beer sold in June will be donated to local BCSPCA branches

D

uring the month of June, all WINGS Restaurants & Pubs (WINGS) across British Columbia are spreading their wings to help protect and enhance the quality of life for local animals. For every pint of Fiji Blond beer, the restaurant’s house brew, sold, $1 of the sales will go directly to local BCSPCA locations in markets where there is a WINGS location. This is the first year WINGS will be running the fundraiser, Pints for Paws, in support of the BCSPCA and all 10 BC locations will be participating with hopes to reach a collective goal of $4,000. The Marketing Team at GoldWings Entertainment Ltd., the parent company for WINGS Restaurants & Pubs, hopes Pints for Paws will become an annual fundraising event. The team at GoldWings selected to run this program company-wide for the month of June since there were no other major fundraisers going on for the BCSPCA. “June is the official start of summer, so why not help prevent animal cruelty by simply having a cold beer on a hot summer day,” says Jeff Perham, Brand & Marketing Manager for GoldWings. “Everyone who works for WINGS or GoldWings is very passionate about giving back to local

communities and we are all animal lovers, so it just made sense to reach out to the BCSPCA. We thought about doing the program for only one night, but we wanted to make it as big as possible in hopes to reach our $4,000 goal”, he says. Participating Markets Include: Abbotsford, Langley, Surrey, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Vancouver, Kelowna,
