Welcome “To be a good father and a mother, requires that the parents sacrifice or defer many of their own needs and desires in favor of the needs of their children. Because of these sacrifices, conscientious parents develop a nobility of character and learn to put into practice the selfless truths taught by the Almighty Himself. This is the reason, why we all respect our parents unconditionally and forever”

The Parents’ Guide to Invisalign Dr Vishal Sharma

S

BSc, DDS, Cert. Ortho. FRCD(C), FCDS(BC)

o your child or teen needs braces and it’s time to weigh the options. One of the most popular choices for orthodontic treatment is Invisalign. Discreet, convenient and effective. What more could you ask for? As the premier Invisalign provider in the Fraser Valley, we’ve heard all of the questions. Well parents, while we can’t help with soccer practice or math homework, we’ve decided to make your life a little easier on the orthodontic side of things with this guide to Invisalign Teen.

replacement aligners for free, keeping them in a case when not in use is the safest bet 4 Children and teens can brush and floss as usual so no excuses! 4 Have kids brush their aligners and rinse them with lukewarm water every day to keep them clean Questions for Your Orthodontist About Invisalign Treatment

When weighing the options for your child’s orthodontic treatment, don’t be afraid to ask questions! An experienced, dedicated orthodontist won’t mind being grilled and you can come to an informed decision. Here are some sample questions parents should ask their child’s orthodontist concerning Invisalign? 1. Are you trained in Invisalign treatment? 2. How long have you been offering the

treatment? 3. Do you have any before and after photos of other Invisalign Teen patients? 4. What issues will be addressed with treatment? 5. Why do you think Invisalign will be effective? 6. How often will my child need to visit the office? 7. How long will treatment last? 8. How much will Invisalign cost and what factors influence this cost? 9. Are there any additional fees? 10. Is follow-up care required (retainers, etc.)? Put your child or teen on the path to a gorgeous smile today by contacting Aura Orthodontics for a free consultation at our Abbotsford, Langley or Surrey orthodontic office. We can determine whether they’re a good candidate for Invisalign. We’ll examine their mouth, answer any and all of your questions and map out a treatment plan that works best for your family.

How Does Invisalign Treatment Work? Invisalign Teen treatment consists of a series of clear, removable aligners crafted from BPA-free plastic that are custom-made for your child’s teeth. The patient wears the aligners all day and night except to take them out to eat and brush and floss. The teeth slowly shift into place, similar to traditional metal braces but without the wires or brackets. Every two weeks or so, your kid will put in a new set of aligners to incrementally perfect their smile. It’s as simple as that. The Benefits of Invisalign At Aura Orthodontics, we’re big fans of Invisalign Teen and if your child or teen is a candidate for the treatment there are a host of benefits to consider: 4 Clear and virtually invisible, which leads to higher self-esteem 4 Aligners are smooth and comfortable with no poking wires or brackets 4 Removable so maintaining oral hygiene is easy 4 No food restrictions 4 Can treat a host of cases including underbite, overjet, spacing, crowding and crossbite 4 Less visits to the orthodontist (though we know you love to see Dr. Sharma!) 4 Straightens teeth faster over a period of adjustment time The Cost of Invisalign Unfortunately there isn’t a set number we can throw out there regarding the price tag of Invisalign Teen. It varies from person to person and depends on several factors including the complexity of the case and the duration of treatment. The cost is comparable to other braces treatments and Invisalign is covered under some dental insurance policies. At Aura Orthodontics, we work with our patients’ families to file claims correctly and we also offer interest-free financing and flexible payment options. What You Should Watch For As with any orthodontic treatment, there are a few things parents will want to keep an eye on to ensure treatment goes smoothly. Here are some things to consider: 4 Patients need to wear Invisalign Teen aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day 4 A new set of aligners is used every two weeks 4 While kids and teens can eat whatever they like when the aligners are not in their mouth, they shouldn’t chew gum or eat with the aligners in 4 While patients do receive a few

Love and Honesty: What We Hide and Why We Lie?

Relationships are built on trust but when you are dishonest with your partner, you crack the bond slightly. You feel guilty and try your best to avoid it but over time, lying becomes a habit and it doesn’t bother you anymore. It doesn’t limit to lying about something that you did but also emotional honesty, which is allowing your partner to be the way they are. When you are being dishonest, you are simply controlling the experience someone else has of you. You create a fake world for your partner, which sucks out the intimate experience from your relationship. Gradually, the trust with fade away because your partner will eventually find out about the truth. It will also stop you from being completely invested in your relationship and enjoying every second of it.

Ritika Tiwari Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist

Hiding from your partner

Being open from the beginning

n a romantic relationship, honesty is equivalent to intimacy and trust. When you are completely honest with your partner, you get close with each other and that’s when your bond grows. Consider lying as relationship termites, which gradually degrades your relationship until it finally breaks apart. This brings us to emotional honesty, which is one of the pillars of a strong relationship. Only when you are connected with your inner self, you will be able to connect with your partner and succeed in life.

Your past experiences might cause you to build a protective wall around you but when you enter a relationship, you can peel it one brick at a time. Be open to your partner and tell them that some experiences from the past have changed you but with their help, you will try becoming your original self.

I

You would have heard several times that a damaged relationship can’t be ment. Even though the statement is true, you can always go back to how things were. It will take some efforts and but it starts with being honest about your mistakes. Some things that

8

JUNE 2019

you might want to hide your partner include your past, your dreams and aspirations, financial status, and food intake. A relationship evolves gradually and to make your bond stronger, you have to open up about all these things. Hiding or lying is only going to make the relationship fall apart. Why does a person lie in a relationship? Everytime you lie to your partner or yourself, there’s a motive behind it. The primary reason people lie is to protect something or someone from your partner. It usually happens in the beginning

of your relationship and it can be your ego or sense of security trying to protect the truth. If those aren’t the reasons you are lying, other reasons include avoiding conflict and fear of shame. Some people lie to claim power in a relationship, while others lie to control what others think of themselves. When you lie to your partner, there’s something you are running away from -- lack of acceptance. You are avoiding the truth and confronting it is the only way to mend your relationship.

Take the things at a pace you are comfortable with and discuss every little thing with your partner. Only when the two of you are on the page, you will stop lying or hiding things from each other. Communicate your smallest to your biggest insecurities with your partner and reciprocate in the same way. It takes a lot of efforts to build a trusting relationship, so make sure you take every step possible towards that.

STAGES OF LIFE & THE RELATED INSURANCE NEEDS Sandeep Ahuja

L

ife is an ever-changing process. With the passage of time, as we grow older, our needs and priorities keep on changing. This is especially true for our financial needs which keep growing with the increase in our obligations viz. addition of life partner and then kids after marriage. To ensure the protection of us and our loved ones, it is essential that we plan properly as per the needs of our family. In the absence of a suitable plan, we may end up exposing our family to a financial disaster. Below is a description of varying types of insurance suitable for each stage of life.

Young and single If you are young and single, you don’t have any dependent such as a spouse or a child who relies upon you for his/her living expenses. So, your demise won’t affect anybody financially thereby leaving you with little/ no need for life insurance. But, if you have dependent parent(s), purchasing life insurance coverage makes sense. However, it may be wise to ‘lock in your insurability’ since you are young and healthy and have the opportunity to benefit from insurance coverage at a lower rate of premiums, which becomes tougher with changes to your health as you grow old. At this stage, disability insurance and critical illness insurance deserve more consideration. In case of a long term disability, a disability insurance coverage will enable you to pay your bills and save for retirement. You can do so either through a ‘group plan at work’ or an ‘individual disability insurance policy’. But, if due to a critical illness you have to remain without work for a certain period of time while you recover, critical illness insurance will provide you a lump sum payment. You can use this money as per your needs such as income replacement, treatment and medication not covered by the provincial health plan, and even travel out of country for medical treatment. Thus, disability insurance along with critical illness insurance, provide you total protection from any kind of emergency arising due to a disability or a critical illness.

Married For married people, life insurance coverage is of vital

importance. In order to save your spouse from any financial crisis if you pass away, it is important that you should have at least enough coverage to pay off your mortgage and other debts, final expenses and income for a few years. Though Term Insurance would be the most affordable option, before buying insurance, you must ensure that financial needs are taken care of. These include paying off the mortgage and financial stability of your children. Planning ahead not only helps you choose the right term for your needs, but also eases your decision at renewal time. But alongside this primary priority, you should give due consideration to disability and critical illness insurance which will protect you throughout your working years.

your spouse in financial trouble during retirement.

Retiree With the regular inflow of income through your pension and savings, your death should not leave any financial burden on your spouse. You only need coverage to pay for final expenses, leave a legacy or for charity. To cater to these ‘permanent needs’, you can either convert a portion of your term

insurance to permanent, or apply for a brand new policy. Depending on your net worth, you may also want to purchase a joint lastto-die policy with your spouse, which will cover the tax that is triggered on the death of the last surviving spouse. This will ensure that your estate passes on to your beneficiaries intact. By this time, since your disability insurance should also have expired due to the coverage of only working individuals till age 65 by most policies; you should replace it with long-term care insurance. Since there are more chances of a critical illness as you age, if you have a permanent critical illness insurance policy, it may be kept in force. As is evident, our insurance needs undergo a constant change throughout our lives. Careful planning for these needs would save you from any financial crisis in case of an unforeseeable event. To protect yourself and your family from any of the life’s risks, you need to buy the right type of insurance at the right time. As an independent insurance

advisor working through Punjab Insurance Agency, I deal with different insurance companies offering plans for different types of insurance. I can explain to you in detail, the insurance plan options and coverage that are suitable for your needs and resources. Besides, I can also help you to purchase mortgage insurance, super visa insurance, disability insurance, critical illness insurance, extended medical plans, group medical plans, RESP, RRSP, travel insurance, TFSA accounts, health and dental plans along with estate planning suitable for your needs and resources. For a no obligation appointment, please call me at 604-996-6862 or email me at sandeepahuja@ punjabinsurance.ca This article is © Copyrighted 2019-04-24 and can be reproduced only with prior permission.

Sandeep Ahuja

604-996-6862 email: sandeepahuja@punjabinsurance.ca

Married with children During this stage, you need to protect your family completely with the valuable combination of life, disability and critical illness insurance. You need to review these regularly to make sure the coverage is adequate, since at this stage, you have to ensure a larger income protection to account for education funds of your children. With an increase in income, you may review your disability insurance to make sure the monthly benefit is sufficient.

Empty Nest As your children become independent and the mortgage is almost fully/fully paid off, your insurance needs will decrease. At this stage, you should consider keeping a smaller amount of life insurance in place to cover income replacement and final expenses. Besides, you may consider purchasing long-term care insurance. It pays you a weekly benefit if you are unable to perform two of the six activities of daily living (bathing, transferring, feeding, toileting, dressing and continence) or suffer a cognitive impairment. It is designed to pay for care in a nursing home or for professional at-home care. These expenses can end up rapidly depleting your nest egg, leaving you and

Felt trapped by being myself, says Will Smith on his bucket list

A Emma Corrin to play Lady Diana in The Crown

N

ewcomer Emma Corrin has bagged the role of Lady Diana Spencer in the show The Crown. Honoured to be a part of the Netflix show, Corrin said in a statement: “Beyond excited and honoured to be joining ‘The Crown’ for its fourth season. I have been glued to the show since the first episode and to think I’m now joining this incredibly talented acting family is just surreal.” Corrin considers Lady Diana her “icon” and she hopes to do “justice” to the role. “Princess Diana was an icon, and her effect on the world remains profound and inspiring. To be given the chance to explore her

16

through Peter Morgan’s writing is the most exceptional opportunity, and I will strive to do her justice.” Creator Peter Morgan described Corrin as a “brilliant talent” who “immediately captivated” the casting director. “Emma is a brilliant talent who immediately captivated us when she came in for the part of Diana Spencer. As well as having the innocence and beauty of a young Diana, she also has, in abundance, the range and complexity to portray an extraordinary woman who went from an anonymous teenager to becoming the most iconic woman of her generation,” he added. merican actor Will Smith opened up about how he “felt trapped by being Will Smith” and his resolution to tick all the adventures on his ‘bucket list’. The Aladdin actor spoke of his determination to overcome his fears after he turned 50 last September. “A huge part of my childhood was marked by fear and a huge part of my drive in life was marked by fear,” Will said at the Graham Norton Show, reported People.

“You can generate great things, you can succeed and win, but you can never really be happy if you’re scared,” he added. He also went on to say that he was happy with his career and is blessed with a wonderful family but still he “felt trapped by being Will Smith.” Speaking about how he felt constrained and was unable to do what he wished, he said: “I have kids so I can’t do that, or I’m famous so I can’t say that, or people look at me so I can’t behave like that.” “So, part of the bucket list was to give myself the freedom to do all the things that I had put in my mind that I couldn’t do. I’m not being adventurous and I’ve always wanted to be that,” added Smith. Smith’s bucket list is now much

known on social media. The actor handles an Instagram account going by the name ‘Will Smith’s Bucket List’ where he shares snaps and clips from the activities he has completed from his list. Making a past revelation, Will said: “I’ve had an interesting relationship with fear my whole life. Cervicogenic Dizziness: written by Krishna Jeeja (CEO MJ PHYSIO)

D

izziness is a non-specific symptom that is commonly experienced as faintness, unsteadiness, perception of spinning and disorientation. Cervicogenic dizziness is most commonly seen in whiplash patients, affecting 20-58% of individuals with flexion-extension injuries an even after motor vehicle accidents (MVA). In my experience some patients are able to identify the symptoms of imbalance right away and in some instances need to be probed as it could be masked with side effects of pain medications or muscle relaxants after an injury. Other terms used for the same disorder are proprioceptive vertigo, cervicogenic vertigo and cervical dizziness. The deep intervertebral muscles in the cervical spine possess a high density of muscle spindles and are assumed to play an important role in postural control. In simple terms the neck muscles are also responsible for holding the head upright in space along with other systems and when it is strained, can no longer contribute efficiently leading to postural imbalance . One modality that is advocated for cervical pain and dizziness is sensorimotor rehabilitation exercises. These exercises fall under the scope of exercises included in vestibular rehabilitation therapy. These exercises are usually movement based, and can be further sub categorised according to different physiological rationales. Another modality that can be used to is dry needling. There are many researches recently explaining the benefit of IMS/ Dry needling along with vestibular exercises for correcting cervical dizziness and pain . Clinical reasoning: Stability and posture of the cervical spine is achieved by a combination of reflexes mediated by vestibular, visual and cervical sensory input The cerebellum/brain plays an important role in integrating this sensory information.

diagnosed correctly, cervicogenic dizziness can be successfully treated using a combination of manual therapy, IMS/ dry needling and vestibular rehabilitation exercises. At MJ Physio ( Bear Creek Plaza ,Surrey and Fraser Street Physiotherapy, Vancouver )we have Physiotherapist experienced in vestibular Rehabilitation and IMS/ Dry Needling.

If you have any questions you can email us at care@mjphysio.ca Krishna Jeeja. J Registered Physiotherapist &CEO MJ Physio Clinics M.Sc (Psychology), M.P.T ( Sports Physio ) Additional training in Acupuncture , Vestibular Rehabilitation and Concussion

How can you be tested for cervicogenic dizziness? Book an appointment with one of our MJ Physiotherapist. During your assessment your physiotherapist will ask you questions regarding your symptoms and also ask you to perform neck movements and other physical test. The diagnosis of cervicogenic dizziness is dependent upon correlating symptoms of imbalance and dizziness with neck pain and excluding other vestibular disorders based on history, examination, and vestibular function tests. Conceal your dark eye circles Other than making your face look drained, exhausted and aged, dark eye circles also add weight to your face. Get rid of them by covering them up using a good concealer. After applying the concealer, put on white eyeshadow on the inner and outer corners of your eyes to help them stand out. 3. Contour to get rid of the double

Start just below your hairline and keep going down until you reach the middle of your eye. Apply a thin line of contour just above the arch of your eyebrow, down the sides of your nose and just under the hollows of your cheeks. Lastly, apply some contour right along and under your jawline to get a more chiselled look and make your double chin disappear. Then blend as much as possible to make the contouring look natural. 4. Complement the contour with a highlighter Contour works wonders when complemented with a highlighter, which emphasises the slimmer and angular parts of your face. Apply highlighter just above your cheekbones to make your cheeks look sharper. Also, dab some highlighter on the bridge of your nose

and under the arch of your brows to shrink the size of your face.

on the inner half of the crease and an even darker shade at the outer corner of your eye.

5. Use bronzer for a sharper look

While applying the eyeliner, do not follow the natural shape of your eye and angle it higher than usual as a winged eyeliner draws attention upward.

A bronzer creates natural shadows that sculpt your face and give it more definition. Apply some bronzer along the sides of your nose to make it look thinner. Also, apply some bronzer on the hollows of your cheeks and at the bottom of your jaw to make your features look more slender and pronounced. 6. Fill up your eyebrows Define the shape of your eyebrows and create a slight arch using an eyebrow pencil. Afterwards, fill it up using some eyebrow powder or dark eyeshadow. Make sure to keep the shape angular for the slimming effect on your face. 7. Accentuate your eyes Focus on getting some dramatic, smokey eye makeup to draw attention to your eyes. Start by choosing a shimmery eyeshadow on your brow line, a slightly darker shade

Finish off your eye makeup by curling your eyelashes and applying a heavy mascara to add volume to your lashes and make your eyes pop. 8. Plump up your lips If you have thin lips, that might make your face look more round. Use a lip liner on your lower lip to plump up your lips. Fill up your lips by choosing a shade of pink lip colour that suits your complexion. Steer away from nudes and bright shades as they make the lips look thinner. While every woman is beautiful in her own way, makeup is the art that enhances the best features every woman has. Makeup is a powerful tool that makes you feel slimmer, more confident and beautiful. Follow these techniques to miraculously transform your face and look fabulous all the time, no matter what.

IF YOU’RE WASHING YOUR HAIR LIKE THIS, YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG

L

ather, rinse, repeat. The procedure that’s been drilled into our heads from childhood sounds innocuously easy, but the industry’s top experts would have you know that there’s a chance you’ve been washing your hair wrong all your life. The one-size-fits-all philosophy doesn’t apply to your daily shampoo and conditioner—different types of hair demand varying levels of care to maintain the tresses. Straight hair requires an extra boost of hydration, while anything that contains parabens or sulphates can cause the pigments in coloured hair to wash away rapidly. To help you customise your daily haircare routine, we got renowned hairstylist, Rod Anker of Rod Anker Salon, and skincare specialist, Dr Madhuri Agarwal, to draw up a handy cheatsheet for every type of hair. Scroll ahead for their recommendations. The expert haircare tips to washing every type of hair Straight hair Dr Agarwal says, “Straight hair is pretty easy to maintain and usually starts looking oily from the second or third day onwards. Opt for washing your hair every third day using a dime-sized amount of shampoo to generate lather without using too much of the product. Start by applying the shampoo on the scalp and spread it over the area by gently rubbing it in. Then, spread the product through the length of your hair and rinse it off. Follow up with a gentle, mild conditioner by applying it from mid-length to the end of the hair shaft. Leave it on for a few seconds

Fine hair

before washing it off with cool water. Avoid keeping the conditioner on for a long time, as it will weigh down the hair and make it look limp. Also, look for lightweight shampoos that provide shine and hydration to the hair without weighing it down when shopping. Choose products that can help add some bounce since a straight mane has the tendency to fall flat. If you’ve been facing frizz, use a moisturising hair mask once a week.” Curly, thick hair “People with curly hair require less shampooing as frequent usage of products can dry out the curls. Since oil does not build up quickly in curly hair, it can be washed once or twice a week,” says Dr Agarwal. “Depending

on the length of your hair, squeeze out a proportionate amount of shampoo, and work it from the roots till the ends using your fingertips,” adds Anker. “Once it is rinsed out, apply conditioner from the mid-lengths to the end of the hair shaft. It is extremely crucial to comb it through while the conditioner is still in to displace any knots. Don’t shake your hair once out of the shower. Gently pat it dry, but avoid rubbing the towel in as this can make hair frizzy.” Long hair “Long hair should ideally be washed twice or thrice a week as frequent shampooing can strip natural oils from the scalp and induce frizz. It is essential to bear in mind that you

“People with fine hair people generally face the issue of oil build-up, causing the tresses to look limp and greasy easily—oil from the scalp freely flows downwards in the case of straight hair. It is advisable to wash this hair type frequently, and if required, on a daily basis. Add a volumising shampoo and conditioner to your daily routine to boost density and ensure that you steer clear of heavy products. You can also opt for a dry shampoo in between two washes to prevent a greasy look. Begin by diluting a quarter-sized amount of shampoo and applying it on the scalp. While washing it off, ensure that the ends are thoroughly cleansed too. Use the conditioner downwards from the mid-length of the hair, and rinse it off after a few seconds,” she recommends. don’t use an excessive amount of product on long hair, so as to avoid weighing it down. Start by massaging the shampoo over the scalp and spreading it till the ends, before rinsing to clean the entire length,” the Mumbai-based dermatologist explains. Colour-treated hair “Coloured hair requires care for shampooing, as frequent or daily washing can cause the hair colour to fade out sooner. The natural oils of the scalp help to maintain the hair colour, which can be stripped away by frequent washes,” Dr Agarwal cautions. Anker also recommends factoring in the environmental aggressors your hair is exposed to. “If you spend most of the day indoors, washing your hair every second day is enough, but bearing in mind the scorching heat and increased levels of pollution, you can also opt for a daily wash to keep the scalp clean. When washing your hair, it is best to dampen it to rinse any existing product out of your hair and squeeze the excess moisture out. Then, apply a sulphate and parabenfree shampoo from the roots to the ends, making sure to use your fingertips to untangle any knots. Rinse well until all the shampoo is removed, and repeat if necessary. Squeeze the water out and apply a similar conditioner, free of sulphates and parabens, from the mid-lengths to the ends. Gently comb through to remove any knots, and rinse gently to ensure you don’t tussle the hair and keep it smooth,” he advises. Courtesy: VOGUE

Other factors responsible for diabetes are: Chlorine : which is used to bleach wheat flour; it destroys beta cells in the pancreas. Refined sugar: is like a time bomb in your body, triggering diabetes and problems with blood sugar, im-

mune system, hypertension, even cancer. Chronic stress: high insulin, cortisol, and inflammatory compounds, which lead to weight gain, insulin resistance, and ultimately result in diabetes. A Girl in a Whirl Contd. from previous issue (Part 31) be in the bad books of everyone, however good I do to them. I had thought that my dear brother and his other family members would come to Canada because of you. You became so miserable and helpless here. I’m in your bad books and in your parents’ too. Tell me where I go and seek solace?”, even bhua burst out crying. “No bhua ji, don’t weep. You are so nice. I have no grudges against you.”, I tried to calm her down very respectfully. “Honey, you cannot have any idea how miserable I am.”, bhua wept and hugged me very lovingly. She asked me to feed Nancy. Then she made one more dish for me and left. I was recalling what bhua had shared with me. How nice bhua was, and upset too! I had a false grudge against her that I had been in that condition because of her. But I was left with no grudges against her anymore. My heart was filled with respect for bhua. I had got some strength to live after realizing bhua’s troubles. I began living positively and taking care of Nancy more. The other day, bhua came to me with her grandchildren. She said her grandchildren liked Nancy and me very much.

Their one bedroom suite was getting vacant the following month. They wanted me to rent their basement. Then bhua wouldn’t have to come to see me especially. Thence, she would be able to take care of Nancy more. That sounded a good idea. I gave one-month notice to my house owner. I moved to bhua’s basement. Days went by. My divorce case was in progress. Whenever my lawyer called me I went to him and signed some papers. He apprised me of all the latest developments. 34. My first love Once I went to buy some grocery. A girl met me at the store and invited me to her office to tell me something very important about Canadiantax system. I liked the way she gave me the invitation. I went to her office. She explained me Einstein’s rule of seventytwo. That appealed me a lot. I began visiting there regularly and learning new things. One day, the girl booked my test. I started preparing for that. I brought many new people to this company. The other day, Nancy had a fever. I had to go for shopping alone leaving Nancy with bhua. I saw a pretty handsome boy in a mall. He was gazing and smiling at me. We were trained to invite all sorts of people to our office to enhance our business. I went to him and gave him my card. “Hi, myself Sonia.”, I said.

@sa entertainment

“Hi, I’m Amrit.”, He replied. “I invited him to my office. He came there the very next day. I explained him all the business. He instantly joined the business. Amrit had come to Canada just six months ago. He was from a very rich family of Jalandhar city. They had their own trucking company. His sister was married in Canada who had sponsored all of them. She was married in a family who had a big trucking company in Surrey. Amrit was unable to say anything frankly. But I liked him for many reasons. “Sonia, I like you very much.”, he said the other day holding my hand in his hands when he and I were alone in a room. “Leave my hand, Amrit!”, I pretended to be angry. Actually, Amrit had given me goosebumps out of love. Instead of releasing my hand, he began caressing my face with his hand. My whole body felt electrified with several kilovolts. I felt dead sure that only Amrit was my true love. “Do you know I’m five years older than you? And I also have a daughter too.”, I shammed again not to accept his advances. “Doesn’t matter to me. Sachin Tendulkar’s wife is also five years older than him. Sonia, I don’t know what has happened to me since I saw you first time. And this has happened to me first time in my life. Day and night, sleeping and awake, I only see your face everywhere around me.”, he said. Contd. in next issue

Strong Buyer’s market in Fraser Valley Navtej Khela

Realtor and Mind Power Trainer

R

ecent stats of Fraser Valley real estate board has indicated that although April month was very slow, but we still see strong sales in specific property types and price range. Detached homes under one million price range and attached homes in the range of $400,000 to $700,000 are still in demand. This segment of buyers are very active and putting offers on properties they like. They don’t want to miss the opportunity to move in to their dreams homes and benefit from this slow market. My realtor friends are worried that a lot of offers are collapsing due to financing, and we are hoping the government would make some changes in regulations regarding mortgages. Buyers may not have purchasing power now but they have strong desire to either upgrade their homes or to stop renting and own their own homes. First time buyers would like to move into their own condos because rents have go so up. The positive impact of this slower and stable market is that affordabil-

ity have improved. Prices to typical

residential home in Fraser valley have come down by 5 to 8% in last year, and even more than 10% in some cases. Single family homes stay around 37 days in the market now before they get sold. Sellers have to reduce prices in some cases as well. Benchmark prices of single family homes in Fraser Valley is $964,600 which is 4.8 percent less that 2018. Town homes benchmark price is $521,800, condos $420,700 which is also around 5-7% decreased from April 2019. As per CMHC Housing update Surrey has topped at 8.9% for new households driving housing demand. In other words Surrey’s population is growing big time after recent surge in a lot of new immigrants and students mov-

ing to Surrey. This has lead to high construction activity in Vancouver. Condo and apartment completion has increased by 34% in 2018. CMHC is offering 25% refund on insured mortgage on energy efficient houses. They call this plan as CMHC Green home. They also offer purchase plus improvement plan, where buyers could finance renovation of their homes as well. J. Paul Getty wrote- “Buy when everyone else is selling and hold until everyone else is buying.” This is not just a catchy slogan, it is very strong fundamental of investing. Right now real estate market is great for buying. There are plenty of ‘deals’ that you were looking. It is time to take action. You are never too late to start. Nav Khela Realtor 604-700–8568

Lie straight on the floor (on your back). Lift the lower part (hips and legs) of your body slowly, while providing support to your lower back with both of your hands. Make sure that your body is balanced perfectly. Stay in this position for next 15 seconds. Then, get back to the initial state. 2. Sarvangasana

4. Better Posture While communicating with someone, your posture needs to be correct. It is your ‘body language’ that shows how actually you hold yourself, which is enough to make a difference. Practicing yoga is extremely beneficial in getting right posture, which helps us conveying the right messages to the people at

Stylish Ways To Drape Your Scarf

I

t does not go out of everyday style and it is your companion for life, it is the scarf. Scarfs are of so many types of colours, patterns, designs that you’re only left, spoilt for choice. your outfit than you would thought of! If you’re to make a dress out of a scarf, you first have got to have that scarf draped out well, isn’t it? This article is to enlighten you of the in-numerous types of ways there are to drape the scarf that you’re wearing and jazz up your look a little more: 1. Wrap it up! This might just be the easiest and well known ways of draping a small or fairly medium length scarf around your neck. All you need to do is wrap your scarf around you. Now, take the two ends of your scarf and throw it around back and tie a loose knot so you’re good to go. It’s quick and classy, how could anyone not love this? 2. Turtle neck For the turtle neck style, first, keeping one end of your scarf longer than the other, drape one side of it

over your shoulder. Next, loop the scarf around your neck a few times in one direction. Then, to keep your scarf in place tie a knot to both sides and another one just to keep it intact. Fit your knot under the loop of the scarf that you made and make sure no excess cloth is showing, and voila! You’re ready, and you look sophisticated and chic! 3. Celebrity-like We have all been obsessed or inspired by some celebrity or star in our life that we repeat the things they do without questioning them at all, so it’s but natural that the glamorous stars that we see carrying off those scarfs like they own it are meant to taken inspiration from. For this, it’s pretty easy. Just drape one end of your scarf around your neck. You’ll notice one end is marginally, smaller in visibility than the other for obvious reasons. Now, tie it around for about 3 or 4 times, in such a way that it befits and hangs down underneath your third loop. The end that you didn’t loop goes under the last one and you’re done!

LIFESTYLE

sports

Braids have always been a part of a woman’s life as a hairstyle but this time around we give you a whole new aspect and outlook on them by telling you that you can actually braid your scarf too, yes it’s true! Don’t worry, it’s extremely doable too. Just fold your scarf in half, keep the folded scarf draped around your neck and keep your non folded end longer than the other one. Make sure to fit the end of the non-folded end to fit right into the folded one and leave a little space. After which twist the folded end over itself and fit the nonfolded end into the loop that you made and you’ll find your scarf transformed into the perfect braid, and you didn’t even have to practice! Sshh, don’t tell anyone!

5. Bohemian Bunny! This is rather different and unusual, which might further attract your attention, as it goes not around your neck or shoulder, but instead, your hair! Exactly.

After writing an article on Mothers’ Day last month, as I sit down to write an article on Fathers’ day, the primitive thoughts hitti ng the cockles of my heart are; A Mother and a Father are the two wheels of the hitch wagon called Family. If both the wheels of the family wagon are lubricated with the lube of love, passionately coordinated, with single ultimate goal, then the core family passengers-i.e. the children assuredly pass through the journey of life and find their destination in succession.

dad is definitely the one you look up to, no matter how tall you grow. A Dads’ guiding hand on the shoulders of the children, will continue to remain forever. A dad is someone who wants to catch you before you fall and instead pick you back up, brushes you off, and lets you try again. A father knows that failure is- temporary and a great teacher - whereas success is never ending and may be permanent and appear in different shapes. On my sixteenth birthday, when I went to my dad to seek his blessings on the auspicious day, my dad rhymed to me, “Happy Birthday, my dear son.” Before I could thank him, he hastened to add in Punjabi

To be a good father and a mother, requires that the parents sacrifice or defer many of their own needs and desires in favor of the needs of their children. As a consequence of these sacrifices, conscientious parents develop a nobility of character and learn to put into practice the selfless truths taught by the Almighty Himself. This is the reason, why we all respect our parents unconditionally and forever”

[ how are you friend?] I then queried, “why he is saying that he is my dear friend whereas I am his son?” I still vividly remember that he started losing eye connection with me and while reminiscing with a sense déjà vu, he replied,” Today, you are sixteen and grown up. Your feet fits well into my shoes and your ego have fully developed now. From today onwards, I will treat you like a very very close family friend, otherwise you may react – may be badly- and I do not want be in such an unfortunate situation which can affect your attitude- the core

From this day onwards, my father, happened to be my friend, my mentor, my guide. This special day – in my life- always reminds me of how often he has been there for me. There’s no substitute for a full-time dad. Dads who are fully engaged with their kids overwhelmingly tend to produce children who believe in themselves and live full lives, though exceptions are there. Dads are most ordinary men turned into Family heroes. As we get older, we become the person we always should have been, and I feel that has happened to me also. I’m rather surprised at who I am, because I’m actually like my dad. He used to take me to the local library on evenings and week ends as he was fond of reading. It is due to this initiative of my dad that I am into reading and writing for the last 48 years. I owe this habit of writing to my rev. dad.

One of the great lessons, I remember, my dad constantly emphasized in our family-while I was growing up- happened to be, believe in yourself, be confident, take calculative risk[s], be fully prepared, use your resourcefulness and let timely initiative lead you to fruition. cases though exceptions are there. The safely and success of the children, is what, the driving force of the whole Universe. Based on my own experience, I personally feel Children on the other hand also work very hard because they get the family supported diving board where they get the momentum to do the somersault of life and delve deep into the challenging waters of life and come out triumphant.

When you are a father to be: As a Dad-to-be, your primary job is to make sure Mom-to-be doesn’t see red during this stressful time of emotional and physical upheaval for her. Make sure that she has your unflinching support on physical as well as emotional front. A caring father always lead the periodical visits of the expecting wife to the Physicians/ Hospitals, plus take care of the nutrition, vitamins and immunizations et al.

When you are a father, for the first time:

HOROSCOPE

Of course, Becoming a father is a challenge to any man’s psyche and there is a fundamental reorganization that you cannot avoid when you begin this journey. Becoming a father increases your capacity for love and your level of patience towards the family. For a father- along with his wife- his children are his greatest joy- out of everything in his life. Anyone can be a father, but a father is a special dad when he proves to be a caring dad and lead the welfare of the family as a head. My rev. dad taught me the game of life and he taught me how to play it rightfully too.

Every father is a great teacher: My father was my in- house teacher. But most importantly he was a great dad. Every father has the mindset that being a dad is his most important job. Being a father is about adaptation and about making the most of the opportunities that are available to you. Every child normally looks up to the father for stability and strength and, therefore, every dad must strive to be a good role model for his children. Being a father means, you have to think fast on your feet. You must be judicious, wise, brave, tender, and willing to help your kids- even if it cost you some loss of money. When I was a kid, my little elder sister informed my dad that, during sleep, she was imagining animals running under her bed. Read the solution of a smart father; he cut all the legs of the bed and my sister never complained again on this. Dads are indeed intelligent people. My dad, always treated me like a chum and slowly but cleverly put the habit of reading inside me as he used to take me to the local library after I wrote my matriculation exams.

A son needs a father:

It was a dramatic life change, that took place, when I became a dad for the first time. I wouldn’t trade the life I have with my kids for anything in the entire world.

As a boy grows up, on the pedestal of time, many people influence him and his development into adulthood. Clearly, a father is and

A father is your best friend- particularly in formative years: Every dad, leads from the front, to be the parent to his children on any given day. Whenever we need advice or someone to just listen, Dad is always the man. The confidence he has in children is tremendous and encouraging all the same time. Needless to add that a good Dad is able to smile when there is little to smile about. As an educator, I’ve experienced, the positive influence that my father had on me. My dad was my best friend and greatest role model. He was an amazing dad, coach, mentor, security guard and a great husband to my mom. He was there, when I didn’t understand, he was there when I was wrong, he was there when I cried, he was there when I lied. For some reason my dad was always there, when I needed him the most. His love was never ending. And now that he’s gone, there is an emptiness in my world but not in my heart. I like to think, my dad was easy going and kind, and I think some of those things have been passed down in me. I am like him in a sense of being positive and hopeful. He was compassionate, and I’ve got a lot of that in me as well. Now being a dad and a grand-dad, I just copycat his style of parentage because this approach is already tested and trusted.

should be, his most important role model. Every son expects the following from his father: • Every son wants his father to love and respect his wife i.e. his mother. By doing so a dad is showing him how to treat his mother, his sisters, and all the women he’ll meet in his life. This will set the foundation for the relationships he will have later in his life. In case there is a divorce between the parents or the father-mother relationship is difficult, do what you can to treat his mother with respect. • The best teacher is, failures of others, and how it is handled. When a son sees his father fail, and handle the failure well, he sees that it is normal to make mistakes and that mistakes can be fixed. Such a son will be primed to , not to be afraid of making mistakes and will grow into a man positioned to accept and conquer great challenges. • A son always wants to see a dad lead the family by serving; this way, he will better understand leadership. As he grows, he will better lead his family, lead at work and lead in his community. • He needs you to be present in his education, in his social life, in other areas of his life. A dads’ presence in all areas, will give him the timely support he needs. • A son always needs, dads’ love regardless of what choices he makes. He needs a dad to love him, unequivocally, even if they are different. A dads’ love and guidance always open the door to trust and acceptance that build relationship. • A son needs his dad to affirm him. “I love you, my son.” “I’m proud of you, my son.” “You are amazing, my son.” “I know you can do it, son.”. “You are a hard worker.” “You messed up, but I know you’ll bounce back.” These are the lines my dad used when I needed encouragement. A son always needs to hear the words that let him know you- the father. • A dad needs to discipline/ guide his son – in patches- being on the learning curve. This must be done with love and mutual respect. When you discipline your son, yet set boundaries and expectations as a dad. He is going to make mistakes just like you did, dear dad, as a kid but he also needs to know that his actions have consequences. Disciplining him with love will teach him to consider the consequences, his actions will have. This will prepare him to think and evaluate the choices he makes both now and in the future.

A daughter needs a father: As a girl grows up, men will come in and out of her life, but the one man who will always be there is her father. The fatherdaughter relationship plays a vital role in a girl’s chequered journey. Following things, a daughter expects from her dad: •A daughter needs her father to be actively interested in her life. A father

When you are grown up: Children do outgrow the lap of a father but they never outgrow his heart. Parental Love for children lasts a life time. Bringing up a child with healthy habits, great discipline and a successful career is no easy task, particularly in this vying age of razor-sharp competition. But almost every dad, being the family head, along with his better half make things happening in the interest of the family.

We, the children- were when born- do carry the spirit and blood of our respective fathers, mothers and our ancestors. So, we are really never alone. Our identity is through that ancestry line. That is why every parent wants to be known – in the community- as the father/ mother of the wellestablished child.”

should encourage his daughter to pursue her education, hobbies and activities by displaying interest. • A daughter needs you, to demonstrate a healthy marriage, dear dad. A father that displays heart felt affection, respect, and a true partnership with his wife provides a good example that his daughter will want to mirror in her own life. • A daughter expects a dads’, support. When a father supports his daughter, fully and wholeheartedly, she will develop a strong self-esteem and a positive self-image. This doesn’t mean that you always have to agree with her, but show her that while you might not agree with a choice she is making, you will always believe in her as a dad and have confidence in her abilities. • A daughter always wants to trust, her dad as a confidante. When your daughter does come to you and discusses personal issues and problems, she needs to know that you will treat her with respect and confidence. • A daughter needs unconditional love from her dad. Unconditional love requires that a daughter knows, no matter how badly she messes up, her father will be there, not to ridicule and demean but to forgive her and suggest remedial measures.

Conclusion: The greatest gift, I ever had, came from Almighty; I call him Dad. The power of a dad in a child’s life is unmatched. Becoming a dad is one thing - being a dad is many things. Being a dad is a diverse responsibility, and it is also defined by providing support to your partner in the glorious journey of parenthood. Being a son, a father and a grand father, without an iota of doubt, is one of my greatest sources of achievement, pride and inspiration. Fatherhood has taught me about unconditional love, reinforcing the importance of giving back and taught me how to be a better person. Like countless other dads, I believe that my children are the best kids on the planet. Not a day goes by that, I don’t thank God for placing them in my life.” Dear children, “Parents are not perfect, nor are they saints. Dads and moms make mistakes all the time. How you handle these situations will be an important life lesson for you. Please consider it, in the light of the fact, that they are not with you forever.” Dear Dads, you are needed today and every day. Thank you for doing your part in saving our youth and making our society better. A Dad is the one, who is always there; can always be counted on- always has time, always encouraging, that is your Dad, my dad and every dad.

Thanks for all you do, dear dads. To the WORLD you are a DAD; To the FAMILY, you are the WORLD. Happy Fathers’ Day to all !!!!!

De De Pyaar De

Movie Review: Rating: 3 stars Review By: Gaurang Chauhan

A

jay Devgn’s return to the romantic comedy genre after 8 years has turned out to be an entertaining affair. Ashish (Ajay Devgn), a 50-year-old man who is separated from his wife Manju (Tabu), falls in love with a 26-year-old girl, Aisha (Rakul Preet Singh). Things take a turn when he decides to make Aisha meet his distant family that includes his two kids who are of the same age as her. Editor Akiv Ali makes his directorial debut with De De Pyaar De and he makes a good first impression. For the most part, he is in control of the narrative. The first half is mainly about the affair between Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh. While their chemistry is odd as it is supposed to be due to the huge age difference, the dialogues in these scenes are hilarious. One of the most hilarious scenes of the film is the one involving Sunny Singh (special appearance). Watch out for that scene. The sequences involving Jaaved Jaaferi and Ajay Devgn are funny as well but there was no pay off of it.

27th

The second half has some funny as well as powerful moments. Tabu’s outburst scene is brilliant and one of my favourite scenes in the film. The biggest plus of the film is its mature take on relationships. The movie touches upon several relationship taboos like the age difference and live-in relationships. Kudos to the makers for that but their idea of a relationship was also quite messed up. The movie tries to justify infidelity and the relationship Ajay Devgn shares with Tabu was too complicated for its own good. In fact, the story by Luv Ranjan is confusing at times. Having said all that, the biggest let down of the movie was its editing. Akiv Ali, who has edited several popular films like Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, Bang Bang etc, fails to make the movie fast paced and crisp. There are several unnecessary scenes, where the story takes a back seat. The movie should’ve been shorter by at least 20 minutes. And makers could’ve focused more on Jimmy Sheirgill’s character, who showed promise in his limited screen time. Performance wise Ajay Devgn has done a great job. There are several “Uncle” jokes that are cracked on him. I don’t think there is any other superstar who could’ve agreed be the butt of jokes. He looks handsome and once again displays solid comic timing, There are several moments in the second half where the movie could’ve fallen flat if not for Tabu’s presence. She just nails it. Be it comedy or emotional scenes, she is at the top of her game. And did I tell you how gorgeous and hot she looks? This is the best role Rakul Preet Singh has got in Bollywood so far. She has done a great job. She looked sexy throughout and I just loved her bickering with Tabu in the film. She is a natural. Courtsey: timesnownews.com

Why you should add oats to your beauty regime

A

mong the fitness-conscious, nothing says good morning like a bowl of oats. It packs in quite a punch. Being a great source of dietary fibre, iron, protein and vitamin B1, consuming oats can help prevent heart diseases, lower blood sugar and improve the functioning of the nervous system. What’s best, however, is that its superpowers go beyond health. It has a range of beauty benefits. Here are all the things you can do with oats to update your beauty regime.

dry. Do this twice a week, and your skin will thank you. Balances the oil in your skin

Repairs your skin Long hours of exposure to the sun, along with pollution and dust, can damage the skin, making it dull and dry. This dryness also results in other skin problems such as itchiness and infections. What better way to provide your skin with nutrients, vitamins and other supplements than pampering it with oats, which is known for its moisturising, cleansing, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties? Make yourself a royal bath by grinding one cup of dry oats in a blender.

Add this powder to your bathtub and fill it with warm water. Use your hand to swirl the water a few times and evenly distribute the mix. Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil such as rose, lavender or lemongrass. Soak in this for 15 to 20 minutes, and pat yourself dry with a soft towel. It is best to draw this bath twice a week. Banishes acne If you want to score a clear and healthy complexion, it’s important

Offers deep cleansing Instead of opting for a facial or nose strips, get rid of pesky blackheads and dead skin cells with the help of oats. It makes for an excellent exfoliator, leaving the skin soft and supple in spite of the harsh scrubbing. To get started, mix one tablespoon of unpasteurised yoghurt to a tablespoon of ground oats powder. Add a few drops of honey and mix to form a smooth paste. Apply this on your face, leave it on for 15 minutes and rinse off with warm water. You could also mix two tablespoons of oats powder with one tablespoon each of milk, honey and olive oil. Apply directly on your face and leave it on for five to 10 minutes. Then massage it on your face in circular motions. Rinse with lukewarm water. Pat dry. that you have a closer look at your plate. Begin your day with a bowl of oats, as it is one of the best sources of fibre and antioxidants. It helps detoxify the body from the inside out. For topical application, mix the juice from half a lemon with an egg white and one tablespoon of oats powder to make a smooth paste. Is blotting paper your best friend? Lead the fight against oily skin with oats, which acts as a great natural absorbent that helps get rid of excess oil. Additionally, owing to its saponin content, it works wonders as a natural skin cleanser for sensitive or dry skin. Grind two tablespoons of oats into a fine powder. Next, purée one tomato and add this to the oats powder along with two tablespoons of rose water. Apply this on your face and neck, and let it sit for 15 minutes. Wash with lukewarm water. Combats oily and itchy scalp Treating your itchy and oily scalp can be as easy as picking up a bottle of an anti-dandruff shampoo. But it doesn’t necessarily treat the underlying cause of itching. You can solve this problem by treating your scalp with some oats, which also doubles up as a natural soothing and moisturising agent. Mix one tablespoon each of oats and raw milk in a bowl. Next, add one tablespoon of organic almond oil to it and mix well. Apply this on your scalp and roots, and leave it on for 30 minutes. Wash your hair with cold water and a mild shampoo. Gets rid of facial hair Facial hair can be quite a task to remove. You have to go all the way to the parlour and then deal with the pain that comes with threading or waxing. Get rid of unwanted facial hair at home simply by mixing one mashed banana with two teaspoons of oats. Massage this paste on your face for 15 to 20 minutes in circular motions and wash it off with water. For best results, use it twice a week. Courtesy: FEMINA

personalities, whereas others are very unique. Whether we are discussing a dog or a cat, personalities play a large role towards the potential dynamic of their future friendship.

“How Can My Pets Be Friends?”

I

Dr.H.BhullarDVM

n this month’s issue, we will discuss a topic that is addressed more often than you will imagine. Owners will frequently question their decision on having more than one pet in their household. This debate will typically be based upon if all the animals can get along with each other well. Many owners will opt to disowning a new dog or cat

family member, if their original pet at home is not happy. In these cases, we strongly advise any pet owners to carefully inform themselves on the steps to creating a happy household. It is more wise to educate and prepare yourself beforehand, so that the trauma an animal experiences when being disowned can be avoided. We advise that if you plan to have more than one pet in the household, then ideally you should allow the pets to become comfortable with each other by raising them together from day one when they are still very young. However, if you are in the situation of already owning one furry family member, and bringing in another, then please take this article into consideration. It is very important to take into account the personalities of the two parties involved. Some animals have quiet

JUNE 2019

Cats prefer to naturally have a part of the house be their territory to claim. If you are able to give your cat a specific room or living space area to be known as theirs, then you are establishing a sense of boundaries in which your cat can feel comfortable. If your original pet at home is a cat, then instituting this step is even more important. This allows your cat to feel safe in its prime environment. You should also make sure to keep the cat’s litter box, food and water in this safe zone. Normally, cats do not feel comfortable using their washroom if they feel the presence of a dog nearby. This also allows the avoidance of a dog eating the contents in the litterbox. If your dog still does not understand the set boundaries, using a baby gate to divide that area can also be useful. If you wish to keep your cat in a specific room, with a closed door, then we highly recommend placing enrichment items within the room, such as a cat scratcher, tall cat trees, placemats located at high areas (on top of a bookcase, shelf, window panel, etc). You can also help to prepare your dog individually for the soon encounter of its new sibling. Teaching your dog to control its impulses can be extremely helpful in the situation of meeting another cat or dog for the first few times. Impulse control is also very useful for other general case scenarios as well. Training your dog to stay put even with a treat dangling in front of him will show that he is prepared for a more challenging situation, such as an unfamiliar cat that he is excited to chase. It is wise, to however, keep a leash fastened to your dog during the first few meetings with the new pet. This can be seen as having a ‘Plan B’ in case the impulse control training results to be unsuccessful in the new heightened situation. Cont. in next edition

5for beauty tips big, brighter eyes

Y

our eyes are the window to your soul. They can also say a lot about your mood and health. We all want sparkling youthful eyes that sparkle and make us appear youthful; here are five ways to get pretty eyes naturally. Age, stress, long hours in front of the computer, poor diet, pollution, lack of sleep—all amount to poor eyesight and make your peepers look duller. But, here’s how you can bring them back to life – 1. Start your days with berries Eat a bowl of fresh berries such as blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and mulberries, every morning to get bright eyes. Berries are rich in antioxidants and vitamins that give you healthy boost to your eyes and skin. 2. Tea bag and olive oil You may have heard that placing chilled used tea bags are wonderful for the eyes. But here’s a trick to try next time—dip cotton ball in olive oil and swipe it on your eyes. Then place the chilled tea bags and relax. 3. Keep your eyes hydrated Using the computer or phone for too long can strain your eyes and make it look tired. Make sure you keep them hydrated by blinking often. Take a break from your computer screen every 30-40 minutes. 4. Natural eye masks Give a break to your iPad and say hello to eye pad. Natural ingredients like potatoes and cucumber have high water content that reduce puffiness and erase dark circles. 5. Be happy Lastly, be cheerful and happy. Your eyes instantly brighten up when you’re excited, smiling and laughing. Stress, anger and fatigue can make your eyes unattractive. To stay happy and relaxed, get proper sleep, meditate and stay positive. Courtesy: TNN

LAUGHTER: THE BEST MEDICINE and deaf still retain the ability to laugh

creased platelet aggregation.

Structure of Laugh

Research indicates that laughter is linked with the activation of the part of the Brain that produces Endorphins

Laughter has proven beneficial effects on various other aspects of biochemistry. It has been shown to lead to reductions in stress hormones such as Cortisol and Epinephrine

Scientists have shown that parts of the Limbic System are involved in laughter. This system is involved in emotions and helps us with functions necessary for humans’ survival.

When laughing the brain also releases Endorphins that can relieve some physical pain.

A normal laugh has the structure of “ha-ha-ha” or “ho-ho-ho.” It is unnatural, and one is physically unable, to have a laugh structure of “ha-ho-ha-ho.” The usual variations of a laugh most often occur in the first or final note in a sequencetherefore, “ho-ha-ha” or “ha-haho” laughs are possible. Normal note durations with unusually long or short “inter-note intervals” do not happen due to the result of the limitations of our vocal cords. This basic structure allows one to recognize a laugh despite individual variants.

Health Benefits A link between laughter and healthy function of blood vessels was first reported in 2005 by researchers at the University of Maryland Medical Center with the fact that laughter causes the dilatation of the inner lining of blood vessels, the endothelium and increases blood flow.Drs. Michael Miller (University of Maryland) and William Fry (Stanford), theorize that beta-endorphin like compounds released by the hypothalamus activate receptors on the endothelial surface to release Nitric Oxide thereby resulting in dilation of vessels. Other cardioprotective properties of nitric oxide include reduction of inflammation and de-

Laughter also boosts the number of antibody-producing cells and enhances the effectiveness of T-cells, leading to a stronger immune system. It has also been determined that eyes moisten during laughter as a reflex from the tear glands. Laughter yoga (Hasyayoga) is a practice involving prolonged voluntary Laughter Laughter yoga is based on the belief that voluntary laughter provides the same physiological and psychological benefits as spontaneous laughter. Laughter yoga is done in groups, with eye contact, jokes and playfulness between participants. Forced laughter soon turns into real and contagious laughter.

In the mid-1990s, laughter yoga was practiced in the early mornings in open parks, primarily by groups of older people. Laughter yoga was made popular as an exercise routine developed by Indian physician From Mumbai Dr Madan Kataria We as Human are the only ones who has Ability to Laugh Be Happy and Healthy with a Daily dose of Laughter Laughter is Contagious So Spread it That is why it is the Best Medicine

The ability or willingness to tolerate something, in particular the existence of opinions or behavior that one does not necessarily agree with, is called tolerance.

Power of tolerance and understanding It is not for you, me or others to judge another man’s life. We have the right to judge, choose, reject, purely for ourselves, not others. Think for a moment, sometimes in life, we all have been all of these. Think for yourself and let others enjoy the privilege of doing so too.

community / few people who do not want peace to prevail- as it suits their interests.

Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Health Coach of University of Victoria

B

eing tolerant of each other and caring for each other is what makes us human. By teaching tolerance, we allow individuality and diversity and promoting peace for our community. Our success, in the struggle of intolerance, depends on the efforts we make to educate ourselves and others including our children. Is tolerance a value? Tolerance between people makes it possible for conflicting claims of beliefs, values and ideas to co-exist as long as they fit within acceptable moral values. Tolerant people always value the individual, his or her independence and freedom of choice. Does unlimited tolerance work: If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them per se. We should consider that any movement preaching intolerance places itself outside the law, and we should consider incitement to intolerance and persecution as criminal, in the same way as we should consider incitement to murder or to kidnapping. We need not be in a hurry to con-

Education leads to tolerance in most of the cases. Intolerance is the first sign of an inadequate education. An ill-educated person behaves with arrogance, impatience, whereas truly profound education breeds humility, beyond an iota of doubt.

We need to be tender down the lane, all the time- with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and the wrong.

demn others, because they do not do what you do or think as you do. There was a time when you didn’t know what you know today. Please give margin to these people as they are also on the learning curve, like you in the past. Never judge someone by the way he looks: There’s a lot to be discovered. We try to judge people- in the first instance- by their looks and immediate behaviour. While having interaction with others, very often we do think, about the importance and necessity of tolerance in our respective lives. Tolerance is the ability or willingness to bear something, in particular the existence of opinions or behavior that one does not necessarily agree with. The meaning of tolerance to me is to just accept that you have the same right to your life choices as others have to. Tolerance pave the way to a better understanding: Tolerance benefits us to accept/ understand others as our co-inhabitants on the earth. For me, understanding means that although I may not like or agree with everything others do or say, but they deserve a difference of opinion. Every difference of opinion should be respected. We need to be a good listener: We need to develop the ability to

listen to each other and understand the reasons for the differences among us in our approach to life. We may not always agree, but by understanding the basis for differing ideas about various parts of our lives, we can find the common ground that enables us to work together for the good of all. We’ve all seen compassion and cooperation emerging in times of crisis for people around the world, but our challenge is to make that cooperative spirit the norm all of the time. We need to understand each other: we need to be less judgmental about others and try to accept others with their strengths and weaknesses to the extent possible within the moral limits. Our way may not be the only way. No religious belief, ideology or “pressing need” justifies the violation of another person’s basic human rights. If we do not respect other religion[s], then they will never respect ours. Instead of criticizing other religion[s] as below par/bad, we should say, my religion is ‘best of the best’. When every religion preacher/ follower says our religion is the best, then ALL RELIGIONS WILL BE THE BEST. Instead, what we are wrongly, and deliberating preaching is other religions are bad, so come to us. This is the reason, why we are in quagmire intolerance. Every religious sacred book says that God is one, but still we keep on disliking people from other religions and some fanatics try to decimate those. If we start thinking about ourselves as cosmopolitans or a citizen of the world then most of the problems will vanish. We need to relate to people from all different cultural, religious, political, ethnic, economic, age, and gender backgrounds. That makes our living easier. Anyone with strong commonsense can easily understand it. Unfortunately, commonsense is very uncommon, in this present-day world. There are group of countries/

What is the solution: In my opinion, tolerance is the key. Tolerance come out of education. Education is indeed crucial to global peace in the long run. Multiculturalism, higher order thinking skills and global peace should be incorporated into the curriculum explicitly everywhere. Children need to be exposed to many different cultures, religions and world views. They need to develop analytical skills in order to differentiate objectivity from emotion and value judgments. Schools should pay a lot of attention to the hidden curriculum, as well. They must review their norms and assumptions about how teachers and students treat each other. Any kind of violence in everyday interactions is unacceptable. As an example, there should be zero tolerance for bullying. In religious schools [ like Madrasas], perhaps inter-faith dialogue experiences should be part of the curriculum. Children need to learn that in the end, we are all the same. No one is better than anyone else. We just come from different places, but we are the children of the same omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent God. Every religion says God is one. We call Him by different names only. If global peace is our goal, then we must be willing to elevate the importance of listening to each other with open, non-judgmental minds in the spirit of respect for—and even celebration of—our differences. Cont. in next edition

Tolerance is a fair, objective, and permissive attitude towards those whose opinions, practices, race, ethnicity, culture, religion, nationality, etc., differ from one’s own. Tolerance only for those who agree with us is no tolerance at all.

How to wear statement sleeves like a celeb

T

his season, it’s all about statement sleeves. From Deepika Padukone to Alia Bhatt, everyone’s sporting this trend. Bonus: this trend can actually make your arms look thin too—as the flowy and big silhouettes can make give an illusion of slimmer and toned arms. We got in touch with Tanvi Malik, CEO and Co-Founder of FabAlley on how to work the statement sleeves. Bell Sleeves These can be either long or short as they flare toward the bottom hem. They help balance out a bulky upper body and are also great for shrinking shoulders that are broad. Opt for narrow silhouettes such as pencil skirts or jeggings to balance out the overall proportion of your bell sleeve top. Bishop Sleeves The Bishop Sleeve is a large sleeve which is fuller at the bottom than the top and gathered at the cuff. It gives a bohemian look to an outfit and is used for dramatic effect. It looks best on a flowy relaxed outfit like a shift dress. Boxy Sleeves Loose short sleeves that resemble a box are referred to as boxy sleeves. The proportions of a boxy top with loose sleeves will help to create the appearance of thinner arms by comparison. Boxy sleeves look best when paired with shorts or mini-skirts. Cap Sleeves Cap sleeves are very short in length and they cover only the shoulder and do not enlarge at the armpit level. They are worn to give a sleeveless look while balancing out broad shoulders. They look best on maxi dresses as they balance out the shoulders and the long silhouette gives an overall svelte look. Kimono Sleeves Borrowed from the traditional Japanese garment, Kimono sleeves have a wide sloping shape. As the name suggests, it is worn to give a kimono or cape type effect to an outfit. It helps balancing out heavy upper body and arms. Kimono gives a heavy upper body look, thus it should be paired with fitted jeans. Courtesy: TIMESOFINDIA

Choose

necklaces that work for your neckline

H

ere are a few things to keep in mind when you are choosing the necklace you want to wear.

V-neck tops Repeating the shape of your neckline is one of the simplest tricks to nail this look. Choosing to wear a v-shaped slim pendant is a good idea. This neckline is perfect to show off your pretty pendants. V-shaped chunky necklaces that draw attention to your cleavage also work. You must make sure that the neck-piece you wear finishes at least an inch above the ‘V’. A simple strand of pearls will also look good and give an understated, classy look. Collared shirt Usually a slim choker or chain with a small pendant goes well with your collared button-ups. You can also pair them with statement necklaces, to get that unbeatable subtle, yet striking, look. Strapless dresses or tube tops Though chokers are most flattering when worn with strapless outfits, usually all kinds of jewellery complement this timeless neckline. Pair your strapless top with a contemporary choker. The straight cut of the outfit shows off your necklace and also helps give your neck a slender look by elongating it. Scoop necks There are a variety of necklace styles that complement this neckline. Dramatic multi-strand pearls, stones, crystal necklaces or chokers look great with scooped out necklaces. Contemporary and delicate ‘Y’ necklaces, or ones with stunning pendants also work well with scooped out necklines. When you are wearing a dress with a scooped out neck, sport a shorter pendant that has volume. Square-necked outfits Multi-strand chokers, dramatic double strand necklaces work nicely with square necked tops. These necklines draw attention to your neck. Angular, geometric neck-pieces compliment the square neck. Boat neck dresses and tops Long beaded necklaces look great with the boat neckline. This simple neckline draws attention to the neck-piece you will wear. Key points to remember: • When wearing open necklines, you must pick necklaces that fill the open space and match the neckline of the top you are wearing. • When wearing high necklines, you should pick necklaces that can balance the neckline of the garment.
