njuries are quite normal in our life. If we talk about athletes or sports person then it is the part of their daily routine. Am I right? Well, playing sport is not an easy task as you don’t know how you are going to get an injury. Sports injury occurs while doing exercise, playing any sport, inappropriate way of doing any sport, overperforming, etc. These are not similar to regular injuries. Hence, care must be taken. Do you know how important is to warm up your body before any rigorous physical activity? Without warming up, you are actually putting pressure on your muscles which may result in wear and tear of internal tissues. Therefore, to maintain the flexibility of your body prior to a workout or any sporting activity is mandatory. If anyone of you has fallen prey to such situations, then sports physio Vancouver is the best option for you. Therapists of MJphysio are well-trained and efficient enough to treat your sports injury without any surgical method. They preferably work on tissues and muscles with various treatments plans that are designed according to the needs of the patient.

Mjphysio is one of the best physiotherapy clinics in Vancouver with another branch in Surrey which is recognized as the best physio in Surrey. Whether you are living in Vancouver, Surrey, or nearby locations; distance is not going to be the hurdle for all physiotherapy seekers. Physical therapies are actually the most powerful ways to treat any body pain or internal sports injury. You might have seen athletes getting physiotherapies. These not just relax their tissues but also improve their blood circulation. Class 4 laser therapy is one of its kind, suitable for recovering from all sort of pain. Though these therapeutic sessions do not give instant relief like medicines, but the positive point is that it does not have any side effects as we might get due to medicines. You all have heard that slow and steady wins the race. The same phenomena can be applied to physical sessions as well. Slower your therapies, more effective are the results. Physiotherapy Vancouver deals patients patiently and same is expected from your side as well. Doctors’ advice for postvaccine care at home

sore injection site, pain in the injected arm, mild fever, moderate fatigue, headaches, chills, and even diarrhoea are symptoms commonly seen after administration of the Covid-19 vaccine. While one may have taken the right step towards protection from the virus, doctors say the post-vaccination symptoms can be managed at home.

yond 2-3 days, you need to consult a physician,” said Khan Amir Maroof, Professor, Department of Community Medicine, University College of Medical Sciences and GTB Hospital, Delhi.

According to Sujeet Ranjan, Executive Director of The Coalition for Food and Nutrition Security (CFNS), after vaccination, staying on site for monitoring is crucial. The healthcare provider should observe you for about 30 minutes after the vaccine is administered to make sure there are no immediate reactions. However, it is extremely rare to have severe health reactions.

Navneet Kaur, General Physician, Apollo Spectra Nehru Enclave, New Delhi suggests: “Eat anti-inflammatory foods like strawberries, cherries, oranges, mackerel, green vegetables, and nuts after vaccination. Limit your intake of processed and junk food. Remember that a healthy diet will reduce inflammation and strengthen your immune system. Moreover, you will have to get a good night’s sleep and avoid exertion.”

“Vaccines are designed to give immunity without the dangers of getting the disease. While it’s normal to build immunity without side effects, it is also common to experience some mild-to-moderate side effects that go away within a few days on their own,” Ranjan told IANSlife. Tejaswini Deepak, Physician, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Koramangala, Bengaluru, says that getting vaccinated does not guarantee full immunity against the virus but it is a wise decision to get the dose to move towards a collective fight against this pandemic. The vaccine has mild side effects depending on the body of an individual and these symptoms can be easily managed at home. “Fatigue, headache and body weak-

ness are a few ailments that can be noticed post the vaccination. Adequate water intake is important to stay hydrated. Alongside proper sleep, a balanced diet, less strenuous exercise and low intake of caffeine is recommended. A paracetamol tablet can be taken to reduce the body pain,” says the physician. “The pain at the local injection site usually resolves within one day, while fever and body ache resolve in 2-3 days. First of all, you should not worry about the side effects and be completely relaxed as these are minor side effects. For pain

at the injection site, you can keep a wet cloth (cool) or if necessary some medicines to reduce pain. For fever, you should take antipyretics (medicines to reduce fever) and keep yourself hydrated. You are also advised rest, in case of fever. “You should avoid googling about side effects and try to manage it by yourself. We have seen that people panic after reading up on the internet and this leads to irrational and harmful practices. Better to consult a physician. If you have any other side effect, or if the pain persists beyond one day or the fever persists be-

Maroof adds: It takes around two weeks after the second dose for the immunity to develop. Also, the vaccine is not 100 per cent effective and so there are some chances of infection (known as breakthrough infection) even after being vaccinated. While opinions on post-vaccine alcohol consumption vary, many doctors are advising a distance from liquor and smoking. Needless to say, compulsory wearing of masks, continuous washing of hands and maintaining social distancing should still be followed. These side effects should not discourage you from taking the second dose. By: Siddhi Jain

‘Disco Dancer’ W musical planned for release around Diwali ork on the project, helmed by composer duo Salim-Sulaiman, started last year and initial plans were to launch the musical in May 2020. However, it had to be stalled in March due to lockdown, and a new date of release is now being planned around Diwali.

“We are restarting Disco Dancer. Some of us are vaccinated and some of them need to. Things have changed a lot right now and we want to restart it when everyone has taken the first dose. We are almost ready to release it, but things are a bit preliminary. We are hoping to release it near Diwali,” Salim Merchant told in an interview.

“The Mithun Chakraborty-starrer evergreen dance musical blockbuster “Disco Dancer” is being made as a musical, and plans are to release it around Diwali this year. Talking about why they decided on “Disco Dancer”, he said: “It was Mithun Chakraborty’s biggest film. All the songs of this films are massive hits, whether it is ‘Yaad aa raha hai’, ‘I am a disco dancer’, ‘Goron ki na kalon ki’, ‘Jimmy Jimmy’, ‘Auva auva’ -- musically, it has a lot of amazing songs. In terms of the music style, which is disco, it can never go out of fashion. It’s still present right now and people still move to it, dance to it, enjoy it, listen to it. It has a classic touch.” “We have taken the rights for ‘Disco Dancer’ from B. Subhash. Our company Gravity Zero (Entertainment) is basically a company that makes musicals. We made ‘Umrao Jaan’ before this,” Salim said. Source: IANS

ife insurance is an immensely beneficial tool that offers you financial protection against the risk of death. But there seems to be a lot of confusion in general about the concept due to varied reasons such as the complex nature of life insurance and people’s tendency to avoid discussing about their demise. Below mentioned important aspects about life insurance will help you understand the concept so as to enable you in making the wise decision to invest in life insurance.

Life insurance helps compensate for the inevitable financial consequences arising due to the death of the insured. It lessens the sudden financial burden of the family members at the time of unexpected death of their loved one. The family can use the claim benefit to pay the funeral expenses, outstanding debts and mortgages, planned educational expenses and lost income. Thus, a life insurance policy can provide valuable peace of mind to the policy holder as he is assured that it would come to the rescue of his loved ones in case he ceases to exist.

Life Insurance is an immensely beneficial financial tool If you have financial dependents, it is vital that you should purchase life insurance. Your spouse or dependent children necessarily require financial protection. But, even if you are someone’s ex-spouse, sibling of a dependent adult, a child of dependent parents, an employer, an employee or a business partner, you may need to purchase insurance. On the other hand, if you are stably retired or financially independent and your absence won’t cause financial hardship for anybody, then you don’t need life insurance. However, you can use life insurance as an effective financial tool.

They would always aspire to become someone as wonderful and humane as their fathers are. Even for the grown-ups fathers will remain to be looked up to for wisdom and advise that is in the best of interest. It is also a great day to say SORRY DAD. One of the best times to say ‘I’m sorry Dad’ would be now. The times when we as children take all the love and affection of our parents for granted and hurt them with insensitivity, the affection on their part still remains unfaded. Now that we realize how significant they are in our lives, an apology should work as a balm to heal the pain they felt within their souls. In turn we are forgiven and blessed.

Arjan Bhullar: MMA champion with fighting passion honed in Indian wrestling tradition His great grandfather landed in Canada over a century ago, and the passion for wrestling in the family of Punjab origin has produced a world champ.

I

t’s a story that will find resonance in many Punjabi households. A youngster leaves home in search of better opportunities and lands in Canada. He takes his family there in the next few years, and reminiscing about their roots becomes a constant theme. The Bhullar family in Richmond in that sense is like any other from Punjab that emigrates to the destination familiar to people from the northern Indian state. Unlike most who seek a livelihood in Canada, this migration has produced a world champion. Arjan Bhullar last month

became the first Indian origin MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighter to win a world title. He knocked out AmericanFilipino Brandon Vera, champion in the division since 2015, claiming the ONE Championship heavyweight title in Singapore this week. “My whole family has been into wrestling, even before my birth. I also tried team sport but it was the one-on-one sport that attracted me. I liked to take responsibility for my actions. If you train hard, you get your arm raised, you improve and you go on to the higher level,” Bhullar says. “I have known wrestling since I was in diapers. We had a wrestling arena at home. We were 10 boys. Everyone wrestled. Lot of memories, and I was able to reach a higher level,” he says in a video call. Bhullar’s victory is culmination of a cherished dream of his family that made Canada its home in the early 1900s. Bhullar’s great grandfather was the first to leave the Indian shores, and worked in a railway com-

pany. In the 1950s, he took his sonin-law (Bhullar’s grandfather). It The desperation was such that he had to leave his wife behind and missed the birth of his son (Bhullar’s dad Avtar). Only in early 1970s would Avtar move to Canada from his village near Jalandhar, to meet his father for the first time. He completed his high school in Canada and initially worked in a saw mill. All through those years, the family’s love for wrestling remained intact. At least once a year, Bhullar’s father would travel to India to test himself against the best in dangals (mud-pit wrestling), which has a huge fan following. Avtar even formed the Bhullar Wrestling Club to encourage children in the community to take up the demanding sport. Bhullar, who was born in Canada, was a natural in wrestling. He was national champion from 2008 to 2012 in the 120kg category. At the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, in the land of his family, Bhullar won gold, notching up victory over India’s Joginder Kumar in the final. At London in 2012, he became the first Canadian of South Asian descent to compete at the Olympics. “Anytime you are first at something, it’s always special. I have had many firsts in my life. It’s a life I chose. I don’t think apart from combat sport I could have anything else,” Bhullar

says. “When you are a kid you look for inspiration, hope. Sometimes you search that in other people. I found my inspiration in my dad. I guess my achievement will be an inspiration for more kids in my community here.” After the 2012 Olympics, Bhullar quit wrestling. “I thought I had played the sport all my life. I wanted to do something different. I wanted to learn other techniques and fight in different ways. It led me to MMA. I took my time to learn the nuances and then got going.” Bhullar took a three-year break from competition until his first MMA fight at the Battlefield Fight League in 2014. He spent time at the American Kickboxing Academy in California to improve his striking power. In 2017, he became the first fighter of Indian origin at the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He has a 3-1 win-loss record there. He joined the ONE Championship in 2019. “I want to defend the heavyweight title now, for sure. I am also looking for opportunities in professional wrestling (WWE). The hard work is the same everywhere. It’s the technique that is different. I am 35 and still strong enough to move ahead.” By: Abhishek Paul/ HT

Students at L.A. Matheson raise $7,000 to support Guru Nanak Diversity Village

P

rogressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society is proud of youth at L.A Matheson Secondary School in Surrey who have decided to dedicate the next 4 years for fundraising towards Guru Nanak Diversity Village (GNDV). L.A. Matheson students and teachers chose to actively fundraise during April to celebrate Vaisakhi and Sikh Heritage Month, raising $7,000 in just 3 weeks! This is just the beginning and the efforts are going to continue over the next four years to raise more funds. Inspired by the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s principle of “Seva – Selfless Service”, the youth took the initiative to contribute their efforts in a meaningful manner and also involved their families and friends to support GNDV. Mr. Peter Johnston, Principal at L.A. Matheson said, “I am so impressed with the extraordinary efforts put forward by our Mustangs in fundraising. Our students are hard working and have build capacity in connecting with the community to make a difference. They were able to raise 10 times more than their original goal of 700 and this speaks to their dedication and commitment to the cause” COVID-19 pandemic has taught the importance of quality publicly-funded care for our seniors. PICS Society currently delivers an Adult Day program, Senior Independent and Assisted Living Facility programs. This culturally-sensitive long-term care facility is a step towards that direction and will bridge the gap between existing culturallysensitive programs by providing

long-term care services to our seniors. Construction for the facility, to be located in Surrey, is to start in late 2022 and it will be operational with seniors residing by 2024. “On behalf of PICS Society, I want to thank and commend the participating students and teachers of L.A. Matheson for choosing to fundraise for this important community project for our seniors,” said Satbir Cheema, President and CEO of PICS. “It is very heartening to see our youth taking this initiative and in turn raising the bar manifold for the rest of us. Now, I am very confident that we will definitely exceed our target of fundraising $5 million for the GNDV project.” GNDV is a $58.3 million provincially funded project, with $5 million to be raised through community contributions. This 125-bed, 3-storey long-term senior care home is a project for the community, by the community. “We hope the initiative taken by L.A Matheson students and teachers, will inspire others in the community to initiate fundraising activities towards Guru Nanak Diversity Village,” said Ankita Grewal, Fundraising Officer for Guru Nanak Diversity Village. “I encourage other local schools and organizations to connect with us and share their ideas.” Through community’s positive and generous support, over $1 million has already been raised for the facility. If anyone would like to collaborate or donate to Guru Nanak Diversity Village, you may contact or send in your donations directly to PICS Society. Tax receipts will be issued for all eligible donations.

Besan or gram flour has long been used in India for its many benefits for skin and hair care. In fact, it is a traditional home remedy used right from the time when one is a baby.

Use gram flour for

skin and hair problems will have to repeat the treatment a number of times before you get the results you want.

Remedy Step 1: Make a paste with gram flour and fenugreek powder and yoghurt. Step 2: Apply this over the areas where you want to remove hair. Step 3: Allow it to dry. Wet your face with a little water and scrub away the paste.

B

esan can be used in the form of uptans or epilation formula for baby hair, during adulthood in a myriad number of packs and scrubs to take care of beauty issues right from acne to tanning, cleansing and exfoliating. If you are tired of threading and waxing your face, you could try gram flour hair removal as well. Just keep a few things in mind before you start. For starters, steam your face so that the pores open and the hair is easier to remove from the roots; Don’t rub too harshly as that might cause your skin to become inflamed and irritated. Don’t forget to do a patch test first to check if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the home remedy and don’t be impatient because you

But there are certain home remedies to help you to get rid of dark and black elbows. Gram flour cleanses the area and also provides mild exfoliation. Lemon juice acts as a natural bleach that will help to reduce the darkness from your elbows.

Remedy Add a teaspoonful of lime juice to a

teaspoon full of gram flour to make it a paste. You have to balance out the consistency of the paste by carefully adding or reducing the lemon juice to make it little thicker. Apply the mixture and rub in circular motion on your elbows. Allow it to dry and wash it off with cold water.

4. Cures dry skin Are you wondering how we can make such contradictory statements, especially when we have just talked about how gram flour can help deal with oily skin? Well, that is the wonder of gram flour that helps control oiliness and also tackles dry, scaly skin. When besan is mixed with milk cream (malai), it acts as a wonderful moisturiser. You could also add some olive oil or almond oil and get the same results.

Remedy Step 1: Mix gram flour and milk cream to make a paste Step 2: Apply this to your face and neck Step 3: Wash it off before it dries completely

5. Best for exfoliation Exfoliating should be an essential part of your beauty routine because if you do not scrub away all the dead skin cells, the debris starts to pile up leaving your skin looking dull and lifeless. While there are hundreds of scrubs available in the market, there’s nothing like a good, home-made gram flour scrub to get the glow back on your face. And its environmentfriendly as well.

Remedy Step 1: Combine 3 teaspoons gram flour with 1 teaspoon ground oats, 2 teaspoons cornflour and milk. Step 2: Gently rub this on your damp face and leave on for about 10 minutes.

Step 3: Wash off

6. Hair cleanser Has your hair turned dull and lifeless because of all the commercially available shampoos and cleansers? Well, maybe its time to try a homemade hair cleanser.

Remedy Step 1: Make a simple thin paste of besan and water. Take as much gram flour and water as you think is necessary to cover your scalp. Step 2: Apply the paste evenly all over your scalp. Step 3: Leave on for 10 minutes and wash off.

7. Tan lightener If you want to go back to your natural colouring, ditch the harsh chemical tan lighteners and try gram flour instead for tan removal. With its multipurpose benefits, there is nothing quite like gram flour and the best part is that it is almost always available in your kitchen. Gram flour has been used for de-tanning and brightening one skin tone for centuries and its super cleansing properties leave your face looking its best ever. Try this kitchen remedy today.

Remedy Step 1: Mix 4 teaspoons gram flour with a pinch of turmeric, 1 teaspoon of curd and the juice of a lemon. The vitamin C in lemon will reduce pigmentation, while dahi will moisturise your skin. Step 2: Add a pinch of salt for exfoliating benefits Step 3: Apply to your skin and face daily and you will see results after prolonged use. By: Puja Gupta

PF known as Sun Protection Factor is an indicator of how effectively it can protect the skin from harmful of the sun rays. We need to buy a good sunscreen with a good amount of SPF. But we also need to keep in mind certain factors while choosing the right SPF. Aseem Sood, Managing director Proveda India shares how one has to be careful while choosing a right SPF for their skin. Go for broad-spectrum: Knowing the importance of SPF, better choose the cream which has broad-spectrum as it will create a shield around your skin from UVA rays as well, besides UVB rays. Dressing up

is important when working from home

D

uring the pandemic, people’s relationship with clothes has shifted significantly, as people prioritise comfort and convenience over appearance. Furthermore, the lockdown has left most of us with little or no desire to prepare a new look daily. For working women, it has actually become an even greater burden and source of anxiety. Rupanshi, founder of Qua says,”Dressing up can motivate you and increase your productivity as well. The flared and relaxed fits of the shirts, co-ords and dresses make dressing up easier, without compromising on comfort. On days when you are feeling uninspired,

you can wear the co-ord or dress as it is and still look dressed up. These outfits can be elevated further by layering them with shirts and blazers, on days when you want to feel like a true professional.” There have been studies that show how dressing up for work can improve performance. The brand also conducted a poll, where 100 women participated, which revealed that 84 per cent of women felt unproductive while working from home and 85 per cent of women agreed that dressing up for work increased their productivity. Despite the shift in the workplace due to the pandemic, dressing up for work still holds much value as it gives people a sense of professionalism. By dressing up appropriately even for zoom meetings, you can adequately prepare yourself for the day ahead, otherwise you might get caught in the ‘working from bed’ vortex. By: Puja Gupta

How to take

yoga off the mat and into your everyday life

Y

oga is a powerful practice that works on both the body and mind; that is why it helps in transforming the whole personality and not just the physical body. However, there’s a common misconception that yoga is all about complicated postures. That by doing a complicated backbend, or after achieving the full splits, we somehow become ‘better than we were before’. It limits the concept of yoga to something that you only do on the mat. It assumes that if you can’t do extreme postures, you can’t ever be good at or practice yoga. Namita Piparaiya, Yoga and Ayurveda Lifestyle Specialist, Founder, Yoganama shares few ways you can extend your yoga practice into your daily life.

Moderation As we learned from Goldilocks, moderation is the approach of ‘neither too much nor too little’. Moderation can be followed in all aspects of life, such as diet, speech, exercise, possessions, and everything else. The opposite of moderation would be either overindulgence which is harmful. Or completely denying ourselves to the extent of suppressing our needs which almost always backfires in the long run. Moderation keeps you away from extremes and therefore is a very sustainable strategy as it takes up very little energy. You experience this in a yoga class when you hold postures for a more extended

20

JUNE 2021

period. If you push yourself too much, you’ll come out of the pose before the time is up due to pain or extreme discomfort. Equally, if you are lazy while practicing, you won’t benefit from the time you’re spending on the mat. Apply the right amount of effort, and you have a rewarding yoga practice that leaves you feeling recharged and refreshed. And the ‘right effort’ can be different for everyone; that’s why everyone’s yoga practice will look different.

Mindfulness Mindfulness refers to present moment awareness. It is a very powerful and wellresearched practice that can change the very structure of our brain. Mindfulness meditation makes us more rational, less impulsive, and even increases our grey matter. The good thing is mindfulness can be practiced anytime during the day and not just while you’re meditating. You can be mindful when you’re eating, when you’re brushing your teeth, when driving, and so on. All you have to do is become completely aware of the activity you’re doing by observing it in full detail. If you’ve done a yoga class, you’ve undoubtedly experienced mindfulness. Yoga is a great mindfulness practice because all postures are done with

breath awareness. Even in Sun Salutations, you follow a specific breathing pattern. Each movement or transition is accompanied by an instruction to either inhale, exhale or hold the breath. When you hold a difficult single-leg balance like Natrajasana, you automatically become more mindful that you would lose your balance without awareness. In this way, yoga trains you to become aware of what you’re doing with the help of the breath or the difficult nature of posture. It is a great skill to start applying in your everyday life -- both in emotional moments or while doing banal tasks like washing dishes.

Equanimity Try doing a single leg balance when very angry or emotional, and you’ll likely have some trouble. In extreme circumstances, our inner emotional balance gets disturbed, reflecting in our physical state. In yoga, you learn to bring your balance back by taking some deep breaths or doing some gentle kriyas to re-center the body and mind.

And you can employ the breath anytime during the day when you feel overwhelmed. It could be if you’re angry at your boss or had an argument with a colleague, have received a defective product, or are stuck in traffic! With Yoga, you’ve trained yourself in resetting your nervous system by using your breath. And that’s a skill that you can employ multiple times during the day to be stronger and more patient to deal with the stresses of modern life. In fact, without this skill, you cannot sit in meditation because the mind would be highly distracted. That is why in yoga, you practice pranayama before meditation as the breath helps your thoughts settle down. After that, your meditation can be productive as you will have better focus and concentration. With consistent and regular yoga practice, you learn the value of the right amount of effort that teaches you the concept of moderation. A new or challenging posture leads you to stay in the present moment and be more mindful. And by employing the breath, you learn to consciously relax and unwind even in stressful situations such as a challenging posture. In this way, you develop the mental stamina and fitness to navigate your everyday life.

ask to mask kiss -- a new trend popularized by celebrities. Recently Kamala Harris, Vice President of the US and second gentleman Doug Emhoff kissed before heading their separate ways on flights with their masks on. Actor Varun Sood kissing his girlfriend Divya Agarwal at the Mumbai airport with a mask on before leaving for Cape Town, South Africa raised many eyebrows. The question that rises: Is it safe? Let’s see what experts have to say about it in a world that is partially vaccinated. Delhi-based Dr Anubha Singh, Gynecologist and Medical Director from Shantah Fertility Centre says: “Remember, a mask protects the other person in how it limits the spread of your respiratory droplets. For masks to truly reduce the risks of getting COVID-19, both people would have to wear a mask: a mutual masking. But

it might not be a strategy that works for everyone. Dr. Singh further added: “You see masks are like condoms until you know how to wear them correctly and yes they are not 100 per cent safe. Hence be very very careful while kissing”. The consequences of dropping the mask and kissing publicly can go beyond one person getting COVID-19. Dr. Shobha Gupta, Medical Director and IVF Specialist from Mother’s Lap IVF Centre explained: “It’s very dangerous as the outer surface of the mask has the maximum virus of other people. Hamid: Irresistible piece on peace

that punctuate little Hamid’s dialogues with ‘God’. The film’s only unconvincing moments are those that show the characters losing their equilibrium. Hamid’s desperate desire for the return of his missing father, his unlikely phonefriendship with the trooper Abhay (what if Ritesh Batra’s “Lunchbox” was about a long-distance friendship between a fatherless child and a man seem to be in some way responsible for the little boy’s tragedy?) and his eventual realisation that the father he so anxiously awaits will never return, are mapped in a labyrinth displaying the pathway of pain and suffering into the human heart. Adapting this poetic political parable to the large screen, director Aijaz Khan forfeits none of Kashmir’s scenic outdoor beauty, nor at the same time, does the film’s frames look like touristic brochure. As the story of little Hamid unfolds in a tapestry of pain

Cast: Talha Alshad Reshi, Vikas Kumar, Rasika Duggal Director: Aijaz Khan Rating: * * * * and 1/2 (four and a half stars) By: Subhash K. Jha Political turmoil and separatist violence have now become synonymous with Kashmir. It wasn’t always that way. Once known as heaven on earth, the paradisical importance of the violent valley is celebrated in muted shades of innocence and redemption in this gentle saga of love trust and belief during times of acute strife. This is a film that Majid Majidi could have made. The blend of blood and innocence is the hallmark of the Iranian auteur’s filmmaking style. and self-realisation, we are taken on a subtle tender yet revealing voyage into the valley of violence. While the little boy Talha Alshad Reshi with his big questioning eyes is a naturalborn scene stealer, Rasika Duggal as an impoverished single parent struggling to come to terms with the immensity of her loss, is the portrait of supreme conviction and credibility. Curiously the film daintily steers away from getting into the murkier aspects of the mother’s singlehood in a state ridden with predatory aggression. For better or for worse, this gem of a film wants to steer its boat away from the violence that stares little Hamid and his mother in the face. Rounding out this resonant raga of hope, the narrative concludes with little Hamid receiving some expensive paint to colour the boat the boy builds by embracing his father’s craft of carpentry. Red is the colour of blood and bloodshed. But in this film it is also the colour of hope and positivity. It’s time to paint the Green Valley into postcard-perfect shades again. Hamid brings hope. It’s an irresistible piece on peace, and one that every Indian must see.

in militancy and yet salvaged by redemptive twists of fate which perhaps would stump even God. Standing tall in this slender parable of strife and humanism is little Hamid, played with a instinctive gravity and artless wisdom by Talha Alshad Reshi. Casting him is half the battle won. As little Hamid converses on his missing father’s cellphone with ‘God’ (who turns out to be a troubled CRPF trooper with a Bihari accent) the plot puts forward a sturdy yet subtle argument for dialogue, albeit on an artless “poetic” level, which for all practical purposes serves no purpose in the real world of stone pelters and human bombs. And yet in spite of the film blissfully burying its head in the clouds, there is a burning yearning for peace underlining the treacherous tranquility of the film’s surface. book review

‘More than failure be afraid of not trying your best’

T

or a Bohra Dam Biryani.

his is a classic chicken and egg situation: a son seemingly sets out to cure his mother of her obsession with “saas-bahu” soaps on TV and focus on her culinary skills but instead finds his own feet as an entrepreneur!

Next up is the hand churned Sancha Ice Cream made in a wooden barrel with a steel cylinder fitted inside, followed by a Gundi Paan. The aim is to ensure that “when someone is done with the meal and leaves our home, they do so not only with full stomachs but full hearts and minds as well.

“The greatest irony of all is that the world believes that TBK was born out of a son’s desire to help his mother realise her dreams. While it may have started out that way, it really became about my mother helping me realise my own,” Munaf Kapadia, founder of the hugely successful The Bohri Kitchen that in five years, hosted close to 4,000 home diners on weekends and at its peak in 2019 was delivering 1,000 biryanis a day across Mumbai, writes in “How I Quit Google To Sell Samosas” (HarperCollins).

“The world’s best brands and businesses are built on authenticity, creativity and their ability to give customers something unique. “Now, imagine of you knew nothing about our culture and eating practices, and you were taken through the whole experience of eating home-made Bohra fare in the home of a Bohra family as their guests. Wouldn’t that be an experience worth hosting every weekend,” Kapadia writes.

“Over the last five years of being CEO of TBK, personally and professionally. I have grown by leaps and bounds. Mom, who has won awards and achieved semi-celebrity status with a growing list of fans in Bollywood (serenaded by Shaan on her birthday!) food and politics, hasn’t changed one bit.

“Since the inception of TBK, we have gone from strength to strength where the brand’s PR, outreach and visibility were concerned. I have made the cover of Forbes India, featured in Conde Naste Traveller and Entrepreneur magazines. TBK is a two-time winner of the Times Food Award. Mom has been recognised as the Best Home Chef of the Year (2018) by the Indian Restaurant Congress. We won the rising star award at Mid-Day’s The Guide Restaurant Awards 2018; Mom was thrilled to receive the award from Shilpa Shetty Kundra, one of her favourite Bollywood actors,” Kapadia writes.

“Today, when I look at Mom, she seems as content and satisfied as she’s always been. I’d like to think that TBK has done something for her too. I hope it gave her a sense of fulfilment and joy. I hope it made her look forward to her days in a way that only having a purpose or being brilliant at doing something makes you,” Kapadia writes. TBK had come to a grinding halt after a nationwide lockdown was declared on March 24, 2020 because of Covid-19 and “we’re just about getting back on our feet” a year later, Kapadia writes, exuding confidence about the future. “I do believe that the brand that we created because of a fight with Mom over a TV remote can survive a global pandemic. After all, #BOHRIFOODCOMA (the state in which some guests found themselves in after a meal at the TBK Home Dining Experience) is considered a pretty dangerous affliction by itself. “Through this book, I hope to inspire you. I hope to make you laugh a little and I hope that you take away this, if nothing else -- if I can do it, so can you,” he maintains. This confidence, in fact, grows out of one of the 10 “Samosa Gyans” that Kapadia offers in the book: More than failure be afraid of not trying your best.

JUNE 2021

Central to the TBK Home Dining Experience is the Bohra Thaal that Kapadia (then still with Google but quit soon after) and his mother devised. This is how it works: The average thaal is a large steel platter three feet in diameter placed slightly elevated on a square cloth mat called a safra around which seven or eight guests are seated, either cross-legged or somewhere between cross-legged and a padmasana. Once all the guests arrive, the preplated thaal is placed before them with condiments that include pudina chutney, pineapple and boondi raita, aam chunda (a sweet raw mango preserve with chilli powder, kokum aloo, Bhavnagri nirchis, aamba halad (two types of fresh turmeric and black pepper pickled in vinegar) and a bowl of lemon wedges. The food is served on the thaal coursewise, starting with a kharaas or a savoury item such as TBK’s now famous

Smoked Mutton Kheema Samosas. This may be followed by a Nariyal Kebab (tiny vegetarian kababs stuffed with mashed potato, spring onions and desiccated coconut). Eating the samosa is an art in itself. You bite off the top and squeeze in some lime juice and green chutney to get the full flavour of the smoked mutton kheema -- an experience that invariably has guests asking for more! The kharaas is followed by a meethas or sweet dish (to help balance the gut), for instance, a Malai Khaja, a kind of Bohra Baklava. Then comes the more serious food like the Raan in Red Masala -- a one kilo plus a leg of a goat marinated for over two days and cooked on a high pressure flame for a couple of hours. The next up is the jaman aka main course -- it could be either Kaari Chawal

And, with the Home Dining Experience on firm ground, it was time to expand TBK’s reach with a second kitchen at Worli for the delivery business and five cloud kitchens in the suburbs that were each clocking 200 biryani deliveries a day -- collectively doing business of Rs 35 lakh a month by August 2019. On the comeback trail since January, TBK is currently servicing from its Worli kitchen five to 20 pre-orders a day depending on the day of the week. The extensive Ramzan special menu includes an Iftar Meal Box, Haleem with Khammi Roti, Mutton Paya with Sheermal Bread, Raan in Red Masala, and, of course, Smoked Mutton Kheema Samosas. As Kapadia puts it in one of his “Samosa Gyans”: I might not be a billionaire, but I know I’ve achieved enough to inspire you to get off your seat. By: Vishnu Makhijani

How to Avoid Relationship Issues after having a Baby

B

ecoming a parent is an intense experience that changes the lives of all those who go through it. However, the charm of your exciting and loving relationship may begin to fade in the early days of caring for your infant.

Ritika Tiwari

Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist

In a time like this, a couple that once was always excited and engaging in endless activities will have more responsibilities than ever before and not enough time to meet even half of them. In such a case, how should you avoid relationship issues after welcoming your baby?

1- Sympathize with the partner

Becoming a parent means to go through a profound identity shift for life. This is a stressful time for everyone, just like it was when you were teenagers. Such a time requires patience and kindness. It is important, then, to remember that both of you are going through the same experience but in different ways. You are the ones who understand each other the most in this time which is why your kindness to one another means the most.

2- Take out time to spend

www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

with each other

Life is always busy, yet it is busier than it has ever been after you have a baby. Couples simply do not get the time to bond with each other anymore because a significant chunk of their time is spent in devotion to the new member of the family. This can alienate couples who were once well acquainted with each other’s daily routine and patterns. Hence, it is crucial to feel like you still know the other person and both of you evolve into your new personalities together.

3- Find healthy ways to communicate through your issues

Resentment can collect for a long time and there may be no seeming way of communicating effectively with one another. One person might feel overworked while the other person may feel left out. At a time like this, however hard it may seem, couples need to express their feelings to each other. This may be by writing each other a letter or simply going out on a proper date to discuss what each person is going through.

4- Engage in simple behaviours before the baby comes

Before your bundle of joy arrived, you probably had certain activities planned that would be time you would relax, unwind,

and bond as a couple. For some couples this may be watching Netflix through the night, for others it may be gardening. Regardless of what it may be, it is important to engage in these activities in order to allow yourself to rebond with your partner over things you are both passionate about.

5- Practice parenting on each other to be better parents in the future

Parenting by no means is an easy task. And to be able to do it well with your child as they start to grow older, it is crucial to start practicing the habits of kindness, forgiveness, better listening, more compassion, and others. The best place to start is with your partner because it allows you to be better parents as well as better people, especially to the person who matters the most.

Conclusion

No turn in life comes smooth, most require hard work and perseverance. When it comes to a person you have shared your deepest darkest fears with and come so far as to have a baby, it is worth everything to push through the tough times and bring back the intimacy and affection that signifies your relationship.

Understanding the importance of salt, oil, spices and sugar Ayurveda teaches that salt is essential for growth, maintaining water electrolyte balance, and proper digestion, absorption and elimination of wastes. It creates flexibility in the joints, stimulates the appetite and helps digest natural toxins, clearing the subtle channels of the body.

t has a calming effect on the nerves and emotions, replenishing and energizing the entire body. Salt balances Vata and can imbalance Pitta and Kapha when used excessively, causing premature wrinkles, thirst, skin problems and weakness. Throughout time, salt (sodium chloride) has played a vital role in human societies. However, excessive salt consumption could result in serious health problems as it directly impacts the energy levels in one body. Salt is typically made up of the fire and water elements and a small amount regulates moisture level in the body which promotes better absorption of nutrients from food, regulates blood pressure and are vital to the functioning of the brain and nervous system. Eating too much salt can have a range of effects. In the short term, it may cause bloating, severe thirst, and a temporary rise in blood pressure. In severe cases, it may also lead to hypernatremia, which, if left untreated, can be fatal. In Ayurveda,it is established that over indulgence or ati of any ingredient can cause various imbalances in the human body. From a holistic perspective anything overused, misused or used in a high amount leads to an imbalance and causes destruction. Similarly, Ayurveda teaches that the Sweet taste nourishes and invigorates the mind, relieves hunger and thirst, increases tissues and improves the immune system. Importantly, it is associated with the positive emotions of happiness, contentment, calmness, cheerfulness, love and satisfaction when eaten in appropriate amounts. But again, in mod-

Fun ways to stay healthy at work

I

n the corporate world, most of our days are spent sitting at our desks for a long period of time. It is hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle especially when it comes to balancing both work and good health together. Stuck in the monotonous routine and with the roller coaster ride of life, our routine has now been just rushing to work and somehow getting through the day no matter how we feel. Moreover, before we even realize, this sedentary lifestyle coupled with unhealthy eating, high stress levels and inadequate sleep will give us a set of various lifestyle diseases in the long run. Even though there is a constant competition in the workplace, a little dose of healthy eating and exercises in simple forms always does the trick. And how can office life and a happy life go hand-inhand? Sheryl Salis, Dietician and Diabetes Educator, lists below a couple of fun ways to make your life easier, healthier, and happier.

Take up smart snacking!

As the evening strikes and the hunger pangs kick in, we automatically navigate towards that bag of unhealthy food. Knowing how hungry we get especially in the evenings, we forget how many of those unhealthy calories we take in. Instead of binging on chips or fries, indulge yourself in nutritious meals that are high in protein and superfood nourishment like soups. The one minute instant soups are the ideal evening healthy snack as they are convenient to make, healthy and filling. These days you even get soups that have 4X* protein compared to regular soups.

Moreover, as the chilly days continue, soups do create a nourishing option to keep you warm and agile thereby making it the perfect snacking option in the evenings.

Don’t just sit there!

Considering that many of us have desk work, we tend to spend a lot of time sitting and as per studies, sitting for approximately more than 9 hours a day could conjure up a lot of health risks. Sitting is the new smoking. So get moving! Take a break between your mails, back-to-back meetings, work calls and indulge yourself for a stroll for at least 5 minutes after every 30 minutes. This will help you concentrate more, boost your mood and help you avoid those muscle cramps.

Don’t let it be the hunger games but make it the Office Games!

As soon as you see those shoulders drop and eyes droopy, it is high time to play a few games. Call it a fun team bonding

session or stress-busting games, there are various means to ensure a fun time. One of the best ways to club fitness and entertainment together is to go to an indoor adventure and a trampoline park. Bouncing on a trampoline creates the perfect playground to beat the stress in the most fun way and at the same time helps you burn those calories and has multiple health benefits too. Whether it is a Cliff Jump, landing onto a giant air bag, a Slam Dunk bouncing basketball or dodgeball war game, it surely will help you relive those childhood memories and for that matter, even beat your colleagues to a fun game.

Be positive!

With the amount of stress that keeps building up, it’s no wonder you feel so bogged down with work. The pressures of your job ultimately make your tasks even more difficult to complete. It is important to start your day with a positive mindset and filled with energy. Try to take criticism as constructive feedback. Ensure your work place (a place you spend almost your entire day) is a fun place and not a war zone that tends to surround you with negativity. Find your source of happiness in the little things like a completion of a task or a compliment from the boss.

All you need to know about Separation Anxiety in Dogs

I

n this month’s article, we will be discussing a very common behaviour that is seen in many dogs and even cats. This behaviour is termed as, “Separation Anxiety”. This term can be linked to your furry companion if he/she is seen being destruc-

tive at home when left by themselves for a period of time. Such destructive manners may include barking, chewing, defecating, urinating, digging, clawing or escaping when left alone. The common root cause to this problem is often seen to be distress. These

signs of distress can also be seen initiated once the pet comes to understand that preparations of leaving the property are being made by the person, who they are most attached. This can be seen as a triggering event to their Separation Anxiety. This anxiety, like human anxiety, can be portrayed through different set of emotions. Your dog may show agitation, depression or anxiousness during this time. The main goal we wish to achieve when treating a dog displaying signs of separation anxiety is to show your dog that it is ok to be left alone and that it can be enjoyable at times too! When treating a dog with separation anxiety, the goal is to resolve the dog’s underlying cause of uneasiness by teaching him to enjoy, or at least tolerate, being left alone. This is accomplished by setting contributing factors in a way so that the dog experiences the said situation without feeling the accompanying anxiety. Common signs we may see with

28

JUNE 2021

this category of anxiety is: urinating/ defecating (which occurs in reciprocation of the owner leaving the pet alone); barking/howling; destruction of things (a dog may chew on objects or furniture, he may dig his nails into the front or back door of the house or destroy things in retaliation to being left alone); pacing (dogs may be seen showing restless behaviour of walking in circles or pacing back and forth); escaping (if a dog feels very anxious of being left alone in a confined space then his instinct will be to run away as soon as he sees the opportunity). There are many causes to why a dog may experience separation anxiety, such as a change in schedule, location, ownership or absence of a family member (death or moving away). It is important to have a visit with your local veterinarian if your dog is experiencing the signs above. Your veterinarian may conduct a few tests first to rule out any underlying medical issues before bringing attention to the possible cause of separation anxiety. Treatment for such a condition is very doable but requires complete compliance of the owner, in order to sufficiently help the pet. A method in behaviour medicine, known as Counterconditioning, will be applied. This method allows for your dog to replace the anxious feelings surrounding an event of being left alone into a relaxed state instead. In next month’s article we will discuss a more detailed lay out of what the treatment plan for separation anxiety looks like.

A Girl in a Whirl

Continued from issue (Part 50)

We went upstairs on the second floor of the Golden Temple. Nancy felt very happy and started running hither and thither. Sunny held her while she was running towards a window. “The windows are too low here. You, sit somewhere, I’ll take care of Nancy.”, Sunny said. I looked at Sunny with great sisterly love. “What happened, didi?”, Sunny asked me. “I am seeing that our quarrelsome brother has become so sane.”, I said smilingly and began reading patth sitting near a window. Baljit and dad also sat beside me. After reading the patth, we had langar, the holy food. We left Amritsar in our car. We came out of the city. Dad bought some bananas with some salt. God knows why the taste of fruits and vegetables of Punjab was so good. Nancy loved that banana with salt. Then we left for Ludhiana. “Dad, now tell me why you smiled at me in Darbar sahib.”, I asked dad on the way home to Ludhiana. “I was seeing that god has made

his relationship with our Sonia. I was thanking god for that. I felt very happy for you.”, Dad replied. “I didn’t get it, dad.”, I said. “God is so mysterious. He Himself makes his eternal relationship by troubling His devotees whom He loves. Your granny used to say that He puts his devotees and beloved ones in challenging situations. Then He awards them salvation by making them meditate a lot. I felt so good to see that you read gurbani with so much devotion now. Your life has become successful in the divine court.”, dad replied. “Dad, why do I feel that I have begun to know you more closely now?”, I asked. Dad said nothing, just smiled. We reached home and met mom. I gave Nancy a shower first, and then I had a shower. Then we gossiped for a while and had our meals. After our meal, we all went out for a walk. After coming home, mom gave Baljit and me a glass of milk and we went to sleep. “Baljit, don’t take me wrong. I want to say that these English people consider liars very bad people. We have told lies to the

visa officer which is not good. I think we should tell them the truth. They will surely give you visa.”, I assured Baljit truthfully as I had no bad intention for Baljit. He replied that he would think over it and let me know. I realized Baljit’s mental condition and stopped further discussion. By reading gurbani, my heart was filled with so much love for everyone and everything that I was seeing god in everyone everywhere. Despite so many problems in my life, I was feeling a spiritual comfort and an eternal strength to cope with all of them. I always felt that some supernatural power was helping me every moment. The next day, I went to the washroom. I was terribly scared to see dark circles under my eyes. I heaved sigh of sorrow. I was turning to be old. Gosh! My lovely face was looking so ugly.

What’s in a banana?

A

re you willing to jump a little high on the fitness bar this season? Well, fitness is not just about a balanced diet and a routine, it’s also about exercise and monitoring your food intake. If you have newly begun your journey to fitness, it’s recommended that you start slow, and focus on one single aspect of your diet. But fitness and health is more about being consistent, so what can help you remain on track? Add bananas to your diet; this small yet necessary change in your food consumption will benefit you in the long run. A workout followed by a reward is more likely to sustain than ones with extremely highintensity moves. Bananas can be a journey of sweet pleasures, so make it your best bet if you’re looking for a balanced diet amidst a messy schedule. Kimaye Health underlines why you should include bananas in your everyday diet!

Why bananas?

Safe and healthy in its natural form, it serves as a balanced fruit with a perfect blend of vitamins and nutrients. Bananas

38

JUNE 2021

offer massive health benefits and can be squeezed into your regular diet with zero effort. In a fast-paced unorganized schedule that most of us follow, we miss out on the right time to consume our meals. While there are multiple reasons to include a nutritious banana in your daily routine, we’ll bring it down to the 3 most important ones.

1. A full-fledged meal

Good quality bananas are 75% water with very little density. As summers in India can be harsh, you can rely on bananas to keep you well hydrated. Consuming two of them is equal to one full fledged meal and can keep you sufficed for a substantial period of time. So, if you skip your workout for a day, this habit will balance out your fitness goal. They also help to improve digestion, heart rate and blood pressure in control.

2. Effortless and delicious

Banana is a good substitute for breakfast or pre & postworkout meals. In case you crave something sweet and delicious, a banana delicacy

can easily be squeezed into your fitness regime. Bananas make the best base ingredients for pancakes and smoothies, as they taste heavenly, and are also quick and easy to prepare. Its natural essence of sugar makes the fruit a preferred choice. How effortless could it get?

3. Burst of nutrients

Bananas are rich in nutrients, especially potassium and Vitamin C. These elements can help to bring down blood pressure and improve the health of your heart. It could be a perfect aid to save you from unseen health problems that might arise in the future. Why should one wait to fall sick to disrupt a healthy routine? So, if you’re taking baby steps to fitness, bananas should definitely be on your list! While they’re easily available, it’s always good to check before you purchase them. You won’t compromise on the quality of fitness, so why compromise on the diet? Cross two more streets maybe, but pick your bananas from the right store. Source: IANS

NEW IMMIGRATION PATHWAY- A MAJOR HEADWAY TOWARDS PERMANENT RESIDENCY

C

anada set the most ambitious immigration goals in its history last year, aiming to accept more than 400,000 new permanent residents in 2021. With an aim to achieve the set targets, IRCC sent invitations to 27,000 plus applicants eligible under the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) of Express Entry in the month of February 2021. Moving forward, Canada launched six new streams, with over 90,000 new permanent residents planned. The new policy was launched on May 6, 2021 and it will remain open until November 5, 2021, or until the set number of applications are submitted and/or received, whichever is earlier. Temporary staff in hospitals and long- term care homes, as well as those on the frontlines of other essential sectors, as well as international student graduates from Canadian educational institutions, are eligible for this temporary public policy (TR to PR Pathway).

The list of new streams and their set target numbers are as follows: a) Essential workers: Stream A- Health Care Work-

42

JUNE 2021

ers with a quota of 20,000 applications Stream B- Essential nonhealth care workers with a quota of 30,000 applications b) International Graduates with a quota of 40,000 applications (40,000 target met within 24 hours) c) French Speaking Essential workers: Stream AHealth Care Workers (Unlimited) Stream B- Essential nonhealth care workers (Unlimited) d) French Speaking International Graduates (Unlimited) Workers need to have at least one year of work experience in a qualifying profession in Canada, be currently working in Canada, and plan to live outside of Quebec. International students must have completed their studies at a Canadian university or college within the previous four years to be qualified (not having graduated before January 2017), must be employed and intend to live outside Quebec. Notably, French- language speakers will be able to apply through their own sperate route, which will be similar in any way except for the quota exemption. It was not very surprising to see that the category for International Graduates with a quota of 40,000 applications took no less than a day to be completely filled. A lot of hustle-bustle was observed on the day the policy was launched which slowly returned to a normal steady pace the very next day. The other categories are still open and accepting applications and have not reached their specific targets yet. This new policy however will help those with temporary status to prepare for their future in Canada, play a key role in our economic recovery, and help the economy rebuild better.

For more updates, stay tuned.

Celiac Disease: Everything you need to know Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji

MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC

C

eliac disease, is an immune reaction to eating gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye.

If you have celiac disease, eating gluten triggers an immune response in your small intestine. Over time, this reaction damages your small intestine’s lining and prevents it from absorbing some nutrients The intestinal damage often causes diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, bloating and anemia, and can lead to serious complications. There’s no cure for celiac disease — but for most people, following a strict glutenfree diet can help manage symptoms and promote intestinal healing.

Symptoms The signs and symptoms of celiac disease can vary greatly and differ in children and adults. Digestive signs and symptoms for adults include: 4 Diarrhea 4 Fatigue 4 Weight loss 4 Bloating and gas 4 Abdominal pain 4 Nausea and vomiting 4 Constipation However, more than half the adults with celiac disease have signs and symptoms unrelated to the digestive system, including: 4 Anemia, usually from iron deficiency 4 Loss of bone density (osteoporosis) or softening of bone (osteomalacia) 4 Itchy, blistery skin rash (dermatitis herpetiformis) 4 Mouth ulcers 4 Headaches and fatigue 4 Nervous system injury, including numbness and tingling in the feet and hands, possible problems with balance, and cognitive impairment 4 Joint pain 4 Reduced functioning of the spleen (hyposplenism)

Children 4 Children with celiac disease are more likely than adults to have digestive problems, including: 4 Nausea and vomiting 4 Chronic diarrhea 4 Swollen belly 4 Constipation 4 Gas www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

4 Pale, foul-smelling stools The inability to absorb nutrients might result in: 4 Failure to thrive for infants 4 Damage to tooth enamel 4 Weight loss 4 Anemia 4 Irritability 4 Short stature 4 Delayed puberty 4 Neurological symptoms, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disabilities, headaches, lack of muscle coordination and seizures

Causes Your genes combined with eating foods with gluten and other factors can contribute to celiac disease, but the precise cause isn’t known. Infant-feeding practices, gastrointestinal infections and gut bacteria might contribute, as well. Sometimes celiac disease becomes active after surgery, pregnancy, childbirth, viral infection or severe emotional stress. When the body’s immune system overreacts to gluten in food, the reaction damages the tiny, hairlike projections (villi) that line the small intestine. Villi absorb vitamins, minerals and other nutrients from the food you eat. If your villi are damaged, you can’t get enough nutrients, no matter how much you eat.

Risk factors Celiac disease tends to be more common in people who have: 4 A family member with celiac disease or

dermatitis herpetiformis 4 Type 1 diabetes 4 Down syndrome or Turner syndrome 4 Autoimmune thyroid disease 4 Microscopic colitis (lymphocytic or collagenous colitis) 4 Addison’s disease

Complications Untreated, celiac disease can cause: Malnutrition. This occurs if your small intestine can’t absorb enough nutrients. Malnutrition can lead to anemia and weight loss. In children, malnutrition can cause slow growth and short stature. Bone weakening. Malabsorption of calcium and vitamin D can lead to a softening of the bone (osteomalacia or rickets) in children and a loss of bone density (osteopenia or osteoporosis) in adults. Infertility and miscarriage. Malabsorption of calcium and vitamin D can contribute to reproductive issues. Lactose intolerance. Damage to your small intestine might cause you abdominal pain and diarrhea after eating or drinking dairy products that contain lactose. Once your intestine has healed, you might be able to tolerate dairy products again. Diagnosis Serological testing to check TTG ( Tissue Transglutaminase levels )Normal is less than 12. If more than 250 then 97% chance of celiac disease Endoscopy with biopsy Genetic testing for human leukocyte antigens (HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8) Treatment

A strict, lifelong gluten-free diet is the only way to manage celiac disease. Besides wheat, foods that contain gluten include: 4 Barley 4 Bulgur 4 Durum 4 Farina 4 Graham flour 4 Malt 4 Rye 4 Semolina 4 Spelt (a form of wheat) 4 Triticale A dietitian who works with people with celiac disease can help you plan a healthy gluten-free diet. Even trace amounts of gluten in your diet can be damaging, even if they don’t cause signs or symptoms. Gluten can be hidden in foods, medications and nonfood products, including: 4 Modified food starch, preservatives and food stabilizers 4 Prescription and over-the-counter medications 4 Vitamin and mineral supplements 4 Herbal and nutritional supplements 4 Lipstick products 4 Toothpaste and mouthwash 4 Communion wafers 4 Envelope and stamp glue 4 Play dough Removing gluten from your diet will gradually reduce inflammation in your small intestine, causing you to feel better and eventually heal. Children tend to heal more quickly than adults.

With home sheltering for months on end during the lockdown, many of us have quite simply got sick of the sloppy dressing and carefree hair and makeup routine. If you can afford to, continue to stay at home despite the Unlock, because the pandemic ain’t going away in a rush, but step up to the plate and take care of your locks.

Salon style hair at home W

e spoke to expert is Shilpa Joshi Halder, Hair Color & Care Development Manager South Asia for L’Oreal Paris for some do it yourself hair care tips with the help of an oil based serum so you can have shiny hair in an instant.

Effortless Styled Hair at Home With staying indoors, we all are on a lookout for chic updos for our zoom calls. You can try a sleek wrapped ponytail which is perfect for your office calls as well as your zoom parties. To accomplish this look, untangle your hair with the help of the serum, take a couple of drops and apply it the whole way across the length of your hair. Put your hair in a tight pony; take a strand

44

JUNE 2021

from the ponytail and fold it around the hair and then tie it with a rubber band. Set up those strands of the baby hair with a tiny bit of the hair serum, and voilà you’re ready!

Add a finishing touch If you have dry hair troubles and leave-in conditioners aren’t doing the job, an instant shine and smoothing serum is your BFF. Smoothing serums are also one of the most effective ways to manage your hair in humid climates. My recommendation is to go for a serum as it helps give an instant nourish to dry and frizzy hair. Take 3-4 drops of serum on the palm of your hand and rub it well to make it warm. Now, start applying serum to the back of your hair first and then come to the front and midsection of the hair so your hairstyle

stays intact.

Before a blow dry Before attempting a blow dry at home, it’s a good idea to pre-treat your hair with heat-protecting serum. Depending on your hair length take two to five drops of the serum in your palm and rub it well. If you have fine hair and wonder why it always struggles to hold a blow dry, I recommend using any serum which is enriched with a blend of natural oils. Such serums are specially curated for hair of all textures and are the perfect choice for a styling aid. The usage transforms the hair texture from the very first use, delivering extraordinary nourishment and protects the hair from heat as well. Source: IANS
