estival of Baisakhi is celebrated with lot of joy and enthusiasm in the northern state of Punjab and Haryana. Farmers are jubilant over the festival as for them Baisakhi marks the time for harvest of rabi crops. festival as it marks the foundation day of Khalsa Panth by the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. Sikh community located anywhere in the world celebrate Baisakhi by participating in the special prayer meets and Baisakhi processions. “Jatta aayi Baisakhi reverberate in the skies as gaily-dressed men and women move towards the fields to celebrate the occasion. High point of Baisakhi celebrations in villages is the performance of traditional folk dance bhangra and gidda by men and women respectively. The dance is simple in movement but is extremely energetic and is performed in-groups on the beat of dhol.
Baisakhi Special Farmers also celebrate Baisakhi as a Thanksgiving Day. After taking an early bath in ponds or rivers people visit temples or gurdwaras to express gratitude to the Almighty for the bountiful harvest and pray for prosperity and good times in future. At several places in Punjab colourful Baisakhi Fairs are also organized to celebrate the day. People participate in these fairs with lots of enthusiasm and charm. Major attractions of Baisakhi Fairs are the bhangra and gidda performances besides wrestling bouts, singing and acrobatics. Performance of folk instruments - vanjli and algoza is also quite popular. Food stalls and shops selling trinkets make Baiskhi Melas even more joyful. Baisakhi Celebrations by Sikhs
Sikhs celebrate this very important day of their religion with joy and devotion. They take an early bath, wear new clothes and visit the neighborhood gurdwara (Sikh place of worship) to participate in the special prayer meet marked for the day. After a special ardas of kirtans (religious songs) and discourses kada prasad (sweetened semolina) is distributed amongst all
present. Later, people sit in rows to relish the langar or community lunch prepared and served by kar sevaks or volunteers. Major celebrations of Baisakhi are organized at Golden Temple, Amritsar. Most Sikhs strive to visit Golden Temple on the occasion. The Khalsa Panth was founded in Anandpur Sahib in the year 1699.

Another high point of Baisakhi celebrations by Sikhs is the Baisakhi procession or nagar kirtan carried though the city under the leadership of Panj Piaras or the Five Beloved Ones. Men, women and children alike participate in the Baiskhi processions with enthusiasm. Mock duels, bands playing religious tunes and performance of bhangra and gidda dance make Baisakhi processions quite colourful

There were informative presentations and members of the Canadian Armed Forces and the police department spoke to kids about real life super heroes. The camp started with a trip to the Fire Hall where firefighters demonstrated how they help the community everyday. The kids got a tour of the trucks and got to use some of the equipment as part of activities. The purpose of this project is to inspire our youth by introducing them to opportunities for their future. Kids Play hopes that these projects aspire our youth to take up the roles of leaders of tomorrow.

Badrinath Ki
Fashion
Dulhania CAST: Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan DIRECTION: Shashank Khaitan Badrinath Ki Dulhania is a rucksack full of radioactive social issues handled cautiously with bedazzled Dharma gloves. But ‘handled’ is the operative word here. Set in small towns like Jhansi and Kota where patriarchy is as evident as daylight, the movie focuses on Badrinath (Varun Dhawan), a sahukar’s son in pursuit of a bride. He spots Vaidehi (Alia Bhatt) at a wedding and starts wooing her. But Vaidehi refuses to bow down to social pressure and succumb to a marriage nurtured by an IV drip of dowry. Turns out she’s that mutant small-town girl with actual opinions and ambitions and most importantly, a spine. And her character is the backbone of this story, too. She’s fierce and real; she’s pushed down but gets back up; she protects her dreams and for once, doesn’t get emotionally manipulated. Her father’s heart condition be damned! Through Vaidehi, the movie checks all the important boxes: gender issues, feminism, consent, etc. But the story is treated so stylistically (with elaborate song sequences and flashbacks and cinematic moments) that it loses heat. At times, characters speak like public service announcements, and seem a little contrived. The runtime doesn’t help either. This is a story with an obvious climax, so sitting through two and a half hours to find out what you already know might get uncomfortable. But the breezy vibe of the movie and back-toback hilarious lines should get you through it.

Be on top of the trends this year with top 3
jewelry designs
K
eeping in mind that jewelry is highly personal to your own style — if you love something, wear it as often as you like for as long as you like — there is a trend component to jewelry. Like apparel, some designs are hotter than others this year. Here’s what to look for in the upcoming months and seasons: 1. Single or mismatched earrings Despite what many of us never even thought to question, there’s absolutely no reason your ear jewelry has to be symmetrical. Different colors, designs or numbers of earrings — it’s up to you. 4 Put a twist on classic pearl studs — one black and one white for high contrast or blue and peacock for a interesting and subtle “are they different?” take. 4 Wear a single earring. Own the look and no one will ask if you’ve lost the other one. 4 Mix a simple earring on one ear with an ear climber or threader earring on the other. 4 Match patterns and designs but wear different colors of gold or gemstones. 2. Brass jewelry Not always thought of as a modern jewelry metal, brass is making a comeback. It complements natural bohemian looks on women and its heft makes it suitable for men’s jewelry. Some things to know:
24
www.lifestylesa.ca
4 It’s an alloy of copper and zinc, so it is a safe metal for the growing number of people with nickel sensitivity. 4 Depending on the mix of copper and zinc, you could get a “green skin” reaction if copper is the prevailing alloy. 4 It may oxidize (change color when exposed to air). Some brass jewelry is lacquered to prevent this. Make sure you know if it’s been lacquered or not and how to care for it. 3. Earthy bohemian jewelry These designs are intricate and may mix metal colors, different gems or natural motifs like leaves and feathers. Leather necklaces and bracelets and wearing multiple rings on multiple fingers also play into a boho vibe. 4 Earring styles to look for are large diameter hoops — plain or embellished with gems — and feathery or fringy dangles 4 An armful of bangles gives a gypsy feel. 4 Materials to look for are yellow gold and gemstones such as turquoise, opal, moonstone and simulated coral. 4 Play with finishes on your metal jewelry — mix shiny and matte.

5 eyebrow
A
good set of eyebrows can completely make your look. While some are blessed with the perfect pair of arches, others have to take time out to groom them. If you want eyebrows like Cara Delevingne, you better take care of your brows and steer clear of these common mistakes.
Over plucking When you are picking stray hairs from your eyebrows, try not to go overboard and over-tweeze. Frequent plucking can thin out your brows. After one session of plucking, wait for the hair to grow back before you begin plucking again to get an even shape. Trying to make them identical Eyebrows are not perfectly symmetrical and making them identical
26

mistakes you must avoid will look quite unnatural. Do not try hard, rather stick to the natural shape of each brow for a more natural look. Also, trying to match them can cause over plucking. Too harsh brows Eyebrow pencils are handy but overusing them is not a good idea. Using too much of brow pencil will make the eyebrows look like they’ve been painted. Sharp, angular lines are also a no-no. A few light strokes will suffice. Ignoring the natural arch All eyebrows have a natural arch and

trying to change the shape might make them end up looking outlandish and unnatural. What you can do is trim the extra hair to maintain the shape but avoid changing the natural shape of the arch drastically. Too much gap Most of us do not want unibrows, but removing too much hair from the middle can result in a wide gap between the brows. To find the ideal edge of the eyebrow, hold a pencil vertically from your tear-duct to the brow; this is where your eyebrow should begin from.

Beauty
Season’s top beauty trends Bolts of blue While the previous year saw coral, pink and orange ruling the fashion charts, blue marks its debut this year, not just as an eye makeup, but also as lip stains and hair colours. So, whether it is a slash of electric blue across your lash line or Cerulean blue on your nails - this hue will see a number of takers in the runways this year. It’s a trend that can either be subtle or OTT. Oversized jeweled eye shadow It’s complicated, however, it’s much better than your average eye shadow. Meghna Butani, beauty and makeup professional says, “In the previous years, we have seen jewelled makeup take new heights - in the form of jewelled lips and jewelled eye liner. However, this year, several makeup artists in the country are planning to introduce the trend in the Indian fashion shows. One of the biggest highlights will be the jewelled eye shadow where miniature gemstones and other jewellery forms will be used on the eyes.”
you know how to dress up your hair! Tucked hair Whether bound by a ribbon or tucked in at the back of your shirt, this year we have a new style that may make it onto the fashion charts. Nikos Narkissos, makeup professional, says, “This is a new style that have made way to the style charts this season. It’s a cool, fussfree look and can be sported any time during the day. You can wear this style to work or even at a party.”
Sun-kissed skin Gone are the days when makeup artists would use foundations and compact powders to make the skin look fairer. This year, sun-kissed skin will be a hot favourite with makeup professionals in the country. Sylvia Chen, beauty professional, says, “Foundations will be replaced by bronzer in the upcoming fashion shows. It lends a dewy soft look to the skin.” Doll eyes Ever fancied sporting those Barbie eyes? Well, you can do that this year. Doll eyes are touted to be the next big beauty trend this season. The striking features are the wide and thick, dramatic lashes that not only make your eyes look bigger but also make it look trendy. Fringe, freshly shaved sides and cropped curls While plaits and side-swept buns ruled the fashion carpets last season, this season is all about blow-dried hair,

cropped curls, fringes and freshly shaved sides. Follow Riri’s footsteps and sport the all bold look this year. Comparing the Cost of Braces to Other Life Expenses
A
t our Surrey orthodontic clinic, patients typically ask almost immediately how much does Invisalign cost or how much do braces cost? Unfortunately, there isn’t one set number for the cost of orthodontic treatment because it depends on a number of factors including the severity of the case, the duration of treatment and the type of braces or appliances the patient chooses. However, most treatments fall within a typical price range, which we’ll use for simplicity’s sake and to give you an idea of how the cost of Invisalign or braces (without insurance) compares to other common life expenses. Since orthodontic treatment typically takes between one and two years, to make a fair comparison, all of the expenses will be based on 18 months worth of bills. • Average Cost of Orthodontic Treatment o Traditional Metal Braces – $3,000 – $7,000 o Clear Braces – $4,000 – $8,000 o Lingual Braces – $8,000 – $10,000 o Invisalign – $4,000 – $7,400
The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Surrey comes out to $773 a month. • Electricity Bill – $1,620 Residential electricity bills for people in BC average $90 a month.
• Average Mortgage Payments – $32,778 Currently, the average cost of a home in Canada is $508,097. Based on a 5-year fixed rate mortgage at 2.34% using a 20% down payment over a 25-year amortization period, the monthly cost would be $1,821. Multiply that by 18 months and you get a whopping $32,778. • Food Costs – $12,327 According to government statistics last compiled in 2014, the average household food expenditures in British Columbia were $8,218 per year.
• Dog Ownership Costs – $2,055 According to the BC SPCA, the annual cost of owning a dog is $1,370. • Starbucks Grande Latte – $2,162.63 A grande latte from Starbucks averages about $3.95 in the Lower Mainland. If you purchased one every day for 18 months it would come out to approximately $2,162.63
• Car Payments – $10,260 The average monthly payment on a new vehicle in Canada is $570 per month. • Rent of a One-Bedroom Apartment in Surrey, BC – $13,914

• Tuition & Housing at the University of British Columbia – $18,669 According to the University of British Columbia’s cost estimator, 18 months of tuition, student fees, books and a shared Dr. Vishal room on campus (not Sharma including a meal plan or any BSc, DDS, Cert. Ortho. FRCD(C), FCDS expenses) for a Bachelor of (BC) Certified Specialist in Orthodontics Science degree for a British & Dentofacial Orthopedics Columbia resident would be roughly $18,669. • Recreation – $6,270 Canadian government statistics showed that the average household spent $4,180 per year on recreation in 2014. The thing to keep in mind when considering the cost of braces or Invisalign is that the results of a healthy, gorgeous smile can last a lifetime and have a huge positive impact on your health and self-confidence. Plus, at Aura Orthodontics, we make affording orthodontic treatment realistic with our flexible payment options and interestfree monthly payment plans. Relationship
Mother-Daughter Relationship:
what is your equation?
T
he relationship between a daughter and her mother is very powerful and second to none. How a woman sees herself, how she is in her adult relationships with a partner[s], and how she mothers her own children, is deeply influenced by her relationship with her own mother, which can affect her health and self-esteem too. The time you are going to start having major problems, nay, concerns with your daughter will be around adolescence. Adolescence is a very testing time for children and their parents alike. Fortunately this wild swing from closeness to remoteness usually lasts until the daughter reaches adulthood. If the mother and daughter can hang in there during adolescence, the relationship moves to a different level and becomes more of a rewarding friendship. And then the daughter gets a job, become independent, may be move away from home and do the adult things in life. There’s a need to grow up and the relationship has a paradigm shift. The relationship changes again when the daughter has children. There’s a greater level of understanding and depth of responsibility that a mother have to her daughter. Needless to add that Mothers are always very mother-daughter frank with their daughters Prof. Surinder relationships are not just Shaun Kochhar and may be vice versa. There a plain vanilla. I’m a big believer in mother-daughter time. I think we under estimate how important it is for mums and daughters to do things together in those early years of adolescence. Doing that lays a foundation that goes a long way for a daughter to face the daily grind of life. Surinder Shaun Kochhar

•D aughters make poor choices e.g. clothing/hair styling •D aughters have no or less time for them. Experts say, a mother-daughter relationship is a complex one. This maternal friendly bond comes in many shades, as below: They are born best friends : So, is your mum your best friend and helper of the first and last resort. I am sure every daughter will agree that no one cooks as willingly or as beautifully as her mother. No one is as sweetly appreciative of her and her children. In short, no one loves a daughter, the way she does. This relationship is so close that mother and daughter even swap clothes/valuables.This catrgory of mother remains gleefully involved in various aspects of her daughter’s life from which most of us kindly shield our parents. They go clubbing and shopping together. They gossip daily and live awfully close. There is nothing wrong in a mother to treat her daughter like a friend. There is nothing wrong and unhealthy about loving your mum a lot and wanting her around, but a daughter cannot be forever in a child relationship with her parent.

Relationship A mother must remember that she is in a supportive, parental role. And her daughter need to live her own life, in her own generation. She need space in her life for her own partner/ husband and kids and other friends. Best friend mothers, can be too involved in daily life of their daughters, which daughters do not like. To have a fulfilling relationship with a daughter and daughter with her husband/ partner, a mother needs to take a supportive back seat in a daughter’s life. The Week End Caller: To move away from your parents and live your own life is normal for a daughter. If you keep in touch once a week, for many daughters that works well but mother may prefer to live with or nearby in the same city, though exceptions are there. These women have a good relationship but the daughter values her independence and is selective -in sharing with her mother- the events happening in her life on daily basis. The love-hate relationship: In this relationship both cannot live with each other and can’t live without. In this situation, small battles are on. But both survive as their love is proven towards each other . Such type of mother have a vision that her daughter could cook , read watch TV and have adventures with her. But the beauty of the relationship is they can argue, make up and still love each other. The glorified babysitter: If a daughter is working, having her mother looking after her children is a lovely way of organising childcare and is working amazingly well. The mother is pleased to be involved and enjoys time with her grandchildren. The daughter enjoys the free babysitting. However, these mothers can occasionally feel unappreciated by their daughters who are prone to occasionally take advantage, though by default or compulsion. I have heard grannies complaining that they are getting too old for this. They are exhausted , nervous and do feel daughters takes them for granted. Another hurdle in this type of relationship is, if the mother starts to dominate or take over and the daughter resists imposing of her parenting values, then conflit happens. Mother or daughter- there is always a room for improvement: Whatever the relationship between a mother and daughter, there is always a room for improvement. . Here’s how to enhance this pious relationship and negate on misunderstandings. Frequent Communication: Lack of communication is a common challenge with mothers and daughters. Each of them should know how the other one feels. They should not communicate harshly, which causes hurt feelings that take time to go away. A mom should treat her grown up daughter like an

Moms and daughters can be really close but they’re not the same. They have different hobbies, goals and ways of handling things. A daughter need not change her choices to please her mom; and mom doesn’t have to change her opinions, either. Both of them have to give a space to each other so that the relation is allowed to continue to breathe alive. Surinder Shaun Kochhar adult. For mothers children are children, even if they are mothers themselves. They always worry about the safety and wellbeing of their daughters. Both should not allow difference of opinion to block the communication. Don’t wait for the other person to make the first move. Have the bonding back on the rails of normalcy as soon as possible. Change yourself: Instead of finding faults with others, we should change ourselves. That is 100 percent in our control. Many think that the only way to improve a relationship is for the other person to change their ways. This is not a correct approach. When one person initiates a change, the other follows suit. Be an active listener: Instead of assuming, you already know, be an active listener. Positively, reflect back on what the other person is saying. Try to understand the core message. Hold your nerves. Remember, temper is a valuable possession, do not lose it. Love and respect the person, we can hate the bad comment. Repair damage quickly: The proven method for a healthy relationship to continue is, not in avoiding a conflict, because conflict is inevitable. The remedy is to deal with it head on. This applies to mother and daughter relationships too. Not resolving a conflict can have negative consequences. There is no logic to be in a tug of war with your mum or daughter. Show empathy by putting yourself in her shoes: In case, you are a daughter, think of your mom as a woman with her own story of life, her own wounds and hurts who was born and raised in a different generation with different values and difficult family relationships and issues. As such, address your mom or daughter’s feelings with empathy and offer an acceptable solution. Learn to forgive each other’s mistakes: Weak people revenge. Strong people forgive. Wise people ignore. Forgiveness is the key for wellbeing. A daughter have to forgive her mom- being wrong- in order to be healthy. The power of forgiveness is really for the person who forgives not the recipient. Forgiveness repair the damage quickly. For a daughter, there is no one

more special than a mother to forgive. Never forget that your mother is on the wrong side of age, being too old. The mother, being more mature is expected to be equally responsive and up to the mark. Agree to disagree: Moms and daughters disagree on many topics, such as marriage, parenting and career. And they usually try to convince the other to change those opinions. Moms feel threatened and rejected that their daughters are making different decisions. Daughters think their moms disapprove of them and get defensive. Live in the present: Moms and daughters should avoid bringing up old gripes from the past and try to focus on the present. Avoid sarcasm as it is easily misinterpreted, causes hurt feelings and takes you further away from solution. Do not involve third parties: It’s common for mothers and daughters to bring someone else into their conflict. A daughter might involve dad because mom is driving her crazy. Mom might involve her sister because she feels like she can’t talk to her daughter. Either way, it is always better to talk directly to the person. Women talk more than men. Talk is like a gorilla glue that holds a relationship together, for both of them. But, too much talk is fraught with a risk of imposing on each other. Moreover, it’s important, as a mother, not to offer advice or criticism-especially about appearance-unless you are asked. Do not forget the power of praise. Mothers crave this stamp of approval from their daughters. For a thumping majority, the mother-daughter relationship is finally fulfilling. Despite conflicts and complicated emotions, 80 to 90 per cent of women, in a survey, reported a good relationship with their mother. It is normal and really healthy for moms and daughters to have disagreements, subject to a stipulation that they have a redressal mechanism in place. Both should try spending time in talking and doing things. Go out for a lunch or shopping or getting their nails done more often.

You put me on stage and give me just Rs 500 I would love to act. Even if I can’t do theatre I can gladly do short films. Acting is something else for me,” the “Kai Po Che!” actor said about his passion for acting. Brand ambassador, Sushant Singh Rajput also spoke about “Behtar India” Campaign that aims at mobilising students, ordinary citizens and corporates to join a nationwide movement that focuses on health, hygiene, and environment. “When you become a popular face and people start giving attention on what you say or do then it is important to do things that you are convinced with. That’s why I am associated with this campaign. I think this is high time for all of us to understand how important it is,” he stated. “Raabta” also stars Kriti Sanon in the lead role and it’s scheduled to release on June 9.

The right way to eat fruits

oaded with nutrients and fibre, fruits protect us against many health conditions. But how to include these fresh fruits in our daily diet is often misunderstood. There is no right or wrong way to eat fruits but consuming them in an effective way can definitely provide a number of health benefits. The best time to eat fruits The first thing you should do in the morning is eating one fruit before anything else. As our stomach is empty, this practice helps in absorbing its nutrients in the body. Our body can easily digest the fruit eaten empty stomach and allows the stomach to easily process it. THE RULE There applies a rule of eating a fruit empty stomach early in the morning. he Kundalini energy can be described as a powerful form of ‘Chi’ or ‘life energy’ in the form of a ‘sleeping serpent’ that upon being awakened leads to a deep feeling of enlightenment and bliss. Dr. Soorya Kaur, a Delhi-based yoga practitioner, nutritional expert and follower of the Yogi Bhajan School on Kundalini Yoga says, “Kundalini in its basic definition is yoga of awareness. It is concerned with inculcating in its practitioners various breathing postures that serves to increase and better the lung capacity while strengthening the nervous system and making it adept at receiving the flow of energy which is generated when the practitioner is engaged in meditation.” The human body is composed of many systems but it is the nervous system which makes the body and core components perform optimally. It serves as the primary mode of understanding impulses and emotions that one experiences. If Kundalini is the life energy present in the body then Chakra points are the containers present in the body to sustain and act as a channel for the energy that travels from the base of the spine up till the crown of the head. Kundalini Yoga taps the dormant power in this system by awakening the Chakra Points that serve to increase awareness, blissfulness and understanding of the human body in its entirety both spiritually and physically. The Chakra Points in Kundalini are traditionally understood to be seven in number, depicted in increasing order below: Muladhara or Root Chakra located at the end of the spinal column. It deals with survival and is blocked by fear. Svadishthana or Sacral Chakra located at the tail bone or the pubic bone. It deals with pleasure and is blocked with guilt. Manipura or Fire Chakra located just below the rib cage. It deals with willpower and is

blocked by shame. Anahata or Heart Chakra located in the centre of the chest close to the heart. It deals with love and is blocked by grief. Vishuddha or Sound Chakra located at the throat region near the spine. It deals with truth and is blocked by lies. Ajna or Light Chakra located directly behind the centre of the forehead. It deals with insight and is blocked by illusion. Sahasrara or Crown Chakra located slightly above the top of the head. It deals with cosmic energy and is blocked by earthly attachment. In order to practice this form of yoga one needs the guidance of a guru as Dr Kaur believes, “A guru is especially important while understanding the intricacies of Kundalini yoga. Books, superficial explanations and online tutorials are not at all advisable for this branch of yoga as it requires a more personal interaction between a guru and his/her disciple.” But before practicing Kundalini Yoga, one needs to be away from smoking and drugs since they are an obstacle to the natural flow of energy. Exercise in the form of asanas is also beneficial to prepare the body to receive the flow of energy particularly padmasana or the lotus position, the vajrasana or diamond position amongst others that stimulate and strengthen the nervous system. Moreover Kundalini Yoga can be practiced by anyone with a deep resolve and focus, to reap the benefits of the natural energy that flows in the body. “Kundalini yoga can be practiced by three to five year old kids as well under proper guidance though the lessons would be introductory in the initial stages with more intricate lessons as the time progresses,” mentions Dr Kaur. Kundalini yoga doesn’t turn oneself into a superhuman, as one might believe, but as one naturally is programmed to be. But at the same time it involves disenchanted and maintaining a balance within oneself, which is an art to master.

Nuts cut risk of cancer, help weight loss
C
onsuming 20 grams or a handful of hazelnuts and walnuts and peanuts a day can cut risk of heart disease, cancer and premature death. Nuts are rich in heart-healthy polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats, which lower LDL or “bad” cholesterol; plus, they are a good source of phytosterols, compounds that help lower blood cholesterol, reports CNN. A 2016 analysis of 29 studies and up to 8,19,000 people revealed that 20 grams of nuts a day —equivalent to a handful — can cut people’s risk of heart disease by nearly 30 per cent, their risk of cancer by 15 per cent and their risk of premature death by 22 percent. In fact, the research suggests that nuts
may help with appetite control, which can prevent weight gain or even help with weight loss. The study included all kinds of tree nuts, such as hazelnuts and walnuts, and peanuts
(which are technically legumes). They are packed with fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals, including folate, vitamin E, potassium and magnesium. Walnuts are a winner among nuts, because unlike their siblings, they have a significant amount of essential omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for skin health. They also contain the most antioxidants compared with other nuts, according to a study from the American Chemical Society. But the fat, along with protein, is satiating and helps slow rises in blood sugar. That can prevent cravings for sweets and other carbohydrate-rich foods. Research has also shown that eating nuts daily may help us live healthier lives.

Mercedes Benz Surrey Participating in The construction expo 2017 Cloverdale Agriplex ¡ Surrey

ercedes-Benz Surrey showcased their latest commercial van offerings at the recent Construction Expo at Cloverdale Agriplex over the past weekend. The Construction Expo featured the latest offering in Canadian construction, from solar panels, portable green houses to next-generation artificial turfs. The Mercedes-Benz Vans offering with the Sprinter full size cargo van and the Metris mid sized cargo van were a big hit at the show. Though Mercedes-Benz Vans have been available in Canada for close to 10 years, many construction professionals are unaware of the value proposition. There is a mis-conception that Mercedes-Benz Vans are expensive to own and maintain, but in fact the Sprinter van has been ranked by Vincentric as the No.1 truck with the lowest total cost of ownership in North America. The Sprinter and the Metris have service intervals of 30,000km and 20,000km respectively. Sucha Randhawa is the Vans Manager at Mercedes-Benz Surrey and has been nominated into the Circle of Excellence for 5 consecutive years since Mercedes-Benz introduced their commercial vans in Canada. He was on hand to demonstrate the vans and explain to show visitors why Mercedes-Benz is the best value for construction professionals, especially owner and operator contractors. Located on 104th Ave, two minutes east of Guildford Town Centre, Mercedes-Benz Surrey is Fraser Valley’s MercedesBenz dealership for over 15 years.

A home owner’s net worth is 30 X GREATER Than that of a renter
B
uying or renting a home is one of life’s biggest decisions – and one of its biggest financial responsibilities. We have seen record price-rise in Vancouver region in recent years. Regardless of this recent price rise, demand for houses is going up. Every time we sit with a home buyer they ask questions like, “Should I buy now or wait?” Or “How much my house would be worth in a year from now?” I strongly believe that A home owner’s net worth is 30 X GREATER Than that of a renter. By buying a house you are putting your housing cost at work for you. Simply put, homeownership is a form of ‘forced savings’. Every time you pay your mortgage you are contributing to your net worth. Every time you pay your rent, you are contributing to your landlord’s net worth. The Housing Pulse Survey from NAR reveals that 80% of consumers believe that purchasing a home is a good financial decision. “Though there will always be discussion about whether to buy or rent, or whether the stock market offers a bigger return than real estate, the reality is that homeowners steadily build wealth. The simplest math shouldn’t be overlooked.” Why Own? 1 Enjoy the fact it’s all yours. It’s a cultural thing with Canadians to want to buy a home about 70 per cent of us do. Pride of ownership, the ability to decorate how you like (even if your favourite wall colour is purple), and the stability of knowing no landlord can force you to move are big motivators. People want peaceful life and are fed up of complaints of landlord about ‘wrongly parked car’ or ‘only two loads of laundry allowed’. 2 Put your money to work. Typically the biggest motivator is dollars and cents. Renting means every penny of your monthly payment is spent gone for good period. On the other hand, a portion of each month’s mortgage payment goes to reducing your principal it’s like putting cash into your own savings account rather than someone else’s. And with time your home’s value will probably go up. Historically, housing values continue to rise steadily over time, thus creating a solid investment in your future. As they say in real estate, it’s not timing the market, it’s time spent in the market. Then there’s the leverage factor. Let’s
consider a hypothetical $500,000 house. A 20% down payment would mean an actual investment of $100,000. As your property value increases, however, you reap the benefit on the entire $500,000 so an annual increase of just 2.5% in property value translates to $12,500 or a whopping 12.5% return on your initial investment. Of course, you could always settle for something closer to the current return of 3% or less on a term note. Most insiders agree that today’s historic low mortgage rates show no sign of bumping up any time soon. And while a 25-year amortization on a mortgage may sound like a long time, it goes by fast and suddenly you’re mortgage free with only property tax and maintenance to pay. Rent, on the other hand, never ends it only increases. 3 Make tax-free profits. Final thought to ponder. Although an RRSP should be part of every retirement plan, you will always need a roof over your head. You’re also forced to convert Nav Khela an RRSP at age (Real Estate 71 and begin Consultant) w i t h d r a w i n g funds and paying tax on them. But only you choose when to sell your home. Best of all, when you do sell, that profit is tax free on your primary residence and after all, who doesn’t like to get a tax-free windfall? 4 Benefit from competition for your dollar. In today’s competitive market, developers are offering increasingly innovative incentives for buyers considering a brand-new home. No strata fees for a year or more, legal expenses, exotic vacations, upgrade packages, custom vintage wines, even cars have made appearances as no-cost buyer incentives. Bottom line is that if you are interested in finding out if you could put your housing cost to work for you through homeownership, meet with a real estate professional in your area who can guide you through the process.

Distance doesn’t matter for Deepika Padukone and her family
W
hatsApp groups have become more or less ubiquitous these days, with nearly everyone opting to make a group to stay in touch with their family, friends or colleagues. In fact, the same holds true for Deepika Padukone as well. A source says, “It’s well known that Deepika hails from Bangalore (Karnataka) and lives by herself in Mumbai, but like many others, she has also gotten on to a WhatsApp group to stay in touch with her family. This way, she is always aware of what’s happening in her family.” Apparently, the actor’s parents (Prakash Padukone and Ujjala Padukone), her sister Anisha Padukone and Deepika are connected at all times through this WhatsApp group. “Her family can also stay aware of her whereabouts, especially since she doesn’t live with them. Since they keep traveling for work, this group lets them feel connected,” says an insider. It’s believed that the group sees discussions ranging from big news to smaller details like who is going where and what meals are being cooked.

5 easy ways to get gorgeous
hair
W
hether wearing it long or short, we all love a healthy head of hair. Our crazy lifestyle coupled with pollution and weather causes a lot of distress to our hair and leaves them damaged. It is disheartening to see our tresses go dull, limp and lackluster. The least we can do is invest time in our hair and give it a little TLC. Here are some hair care tips to help keep your hair shiny, healthy, and beautiful. Beer treatment Apart from being your company at parties, beer can do wonders to your hair. Rinsing your hair with beer will perk it up in no time. 1. T ake half a bottle (or 1 bottle depending on your hair length) of regular beer and leave it overnight to eliminate the fizz. Make sure you use only flat beer for this treatment. 2. P our beer on your wet hair in small quantities. 3. D istribute it across your hair and use your fingers to massage your scalp lightly. 4. P our more beer and let it stay on the head for 5 minutes. 5. |Rinse thoroughly and let hair dry naturally for shiny and silky hair. Indulge in hair masks Give your tresses the natural treatment with homemade masks that will provide the requisite nourishment. Whip up a homemade mask with kitchen ingredients and pamper your hair from the roots to the tips. Coconut oil, bananas, mayonnaise, eggs, olive oil, aloe vera, honey and yogurt are some of the common mask ingredients. Pick the right one for your hair type and get set go. Use baby shampoo Take a break from high chemical shampoos and try a mild baby shampoo instead. It is great for all types of hair, including dry and coloured hair. The gentle formula in baby shampoo is light, and will treat your hair just right. Keep a bottle of baby shampoo handy when you want to give relief to your hair from chemicals. Give your hair a break Let your hair be au naturel from time to time. Give your hair a breather from hair tools, styling, chemical sprays, mousses and gelsto give it a chance to relax. This will help prevent product build-up, and will also save your hair from the wear and tear caused by regular styling. This is a great way to let your hair down and enjoy it in the natural form. Thorough cleaning Over time products might buildup on your hair, settling on the scalp and causing itchiness and other hair woes. Give your head a good cleaning to clear out all the build-up. Baking soda can be used to clean out all traces of products from your hair and scalp. 1. Take 1-2 tbsp of baking soda and mix it either with 1 tbsp of water or lemon juice. 2. W ork this into your hair, along the hair strands and in the scalp. 3. R inse with tepid water and let it dry naturally.

6 reasons you could be overeating
firm and stick to your decision. Soon your friends will accept your choices and maybe even start following the same.
Here are reasons why you could be eating more than you should
Crockery The size of your crockery could be a major contributor to overeating. Big, fancy plates might look great in restaurants but for everyday meals, plates should ideally be medium or slightly small. Make the change and see how it affects your food intake.
D
o you go crazy with excitement every time you see your favorite food or order all the interesting dishes on the menu just because you can’t decide on one? Is binge eating while watching TV or allowing yourself a treat while on a diet familiar to you? No matter how you describe these situations, overeating is never a good idea. Identifying the triggers of overeating and following a few steps make keep you from eating more than you should. Read on to know more what could be causing you to overeat... Friend circle There are times when even if you are on a healthy diet, you end up going to restaurants with friends and get tempted to have fried food. Remind yourself of your healthy diet
Burning out More often than not, we end mistaking symptoms of tiredness for hunger. Make sure you get enough sleep every night — anything between six to eight hours. Also keep a note of the times when you feel the most tired. Once you figure out a pattern, you can fight it by opting for healthier snacks instead of gorging on junk food. Fast eating Do you gobble up your food and finish your meal in less than 10 minutes? If you can clean your plate in less than 20 minutes, you could be at risk of overeating. Eat slowly and savour every morsel — chew your food properly and put the fork or spoon down after every bite. Boredom How many times have you plonked yourself in front of the TV and reached out for a pack of munchies? Even at work, there are times you are unhappy and end up munching something. Experts say there are millions who overeat just because either they’re bored or have nothing interesting to do. It is time to identify to the root of the problem, whether at home or at work. id you know that exercise is not only good for your body but your brain too? Exercise can enhance the development of new brain cells that play an important role in learning and memory of adults, new research has found. The process of developing new brain cells in the adult brain is called adult neurogenesis, the scientists explained. The researchers found that mice that spent time running on wheels not only developed twice the normal number of new neurons, but also showed an increased ability to distinguish new objects from familiar objects. “Our research indicates that exerciseinduced increase in neurogenesis improves pattern separation by supporting unique and detailed long-term representations of similar but nevertheless different memory items,” explained lead investigator Josef Bischofberger, professor at University of Basel in Switzerland. “Pattern separation is involved in many memory tasks of everyday life. For example, when learning the game of chess, it is critically important to remember the different shapes of pieces like the pawn and bishop,” Bischofberger explained. For the study, the researchers tested two groups of mice that were housed either without (sedentary) or with running wheels (voluntarily running) using a novel object recognition task to assess learning and longterm memory. The researchers found that whereas distinct objects were remembered and recognised by both cohorts of mice, only the running mice could faithfully distinguish similar looking objects. Investigators determined therefore that the running mice had developed better pattern separation capabilities than sedentary mice. To investigate further, the researchers looked for changes in the brains of the mice. By using markers that could identify newly-formed brain cells, they found that running mice developed about twice as many new cells. The study was published in the journal of Brain Plasticity.

Is It Unhealthy to Eat Before Bed?
M
any of us eat before hitting the bed. Is it ok to do so? Many people think it’s a bad idea to eat before bed. This often comes from the belief that eating before you go to sleep leads to weight gain. On the other hand, some opine that a bedtime snack can actually support a weight loss diet. So what is the truth? The answer isn’t the same for everyone. It depends a lot on an individual. On metabolic front, inside us, we all are different
Eating Before Bed Is Indeed Controversial Whether or not you should eat before bed [the time between dinner and bedtime] is a billion dollar question. Conventional wisdom says that eating before bed causes weight gain because your metabolism slows down when you fall asleep. This causes any undigested calories to be stored as fat. Yet some health experts confirm that eating before bed is perfectly fine and may even improve sleep and even promote weight loss. Due to these conflicting schools of thought many people are incurablyconfused.
72
www.lifestylesa.ca
The problem is that the evidence on the matter actually appears to support both sides. Although many believe that a slower metabolism during sleep leads to weight gain yet evidence suggests that your nighttime basal metabolic rate remains the same as during the day. Your body still needs plenty of energy while you sleep. Also calories do Prof. Surinder not count more Shaun Kochhar before bedtime than LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM they do at any other (A freelance writer with time of the day.Yet 36 Years Exp.) despite the fact that there seems to be no physiological reason why, several studies have linked eating before bed with weight gain. Does eating before bed lead to weight gain? The current evidence shows no physiological reason why eating before bed should cause weight gain. However, several studies show that those who eat before bed are more likely to gain weight. It turns out that people who eat before bed are more likely to gain weight simply because a bedtime snack is an extra meal and, therefore, extra calories and the body will be in a resting mode for 7-8 hrs
/saet_ca APRIL 2017
of sleep. Moreover, the evening is the time of the day when many people tend to feel the hungriest. This makes it even more likely that a bedtime snack will end up pushing your calorie intake over.Add the fact that most people like to snack at night while watching TV or working on their mobile/ laptops, and it’s no surprise that these habits might lead to weight gain. Not being 100% conscious ,they eat more inadvertently. But if you choose your snack properly, you can eat guilt free. It is not how much you eat, it is what you eat. Unknowingly we make a wrong choice and hence gain weight. Some people also become extremely hungry before bed because they don’t eat enough during the day. Extreme hunger can cause a cycle of eating too much before bed, then being too full to eat much the next morning, and again becoming overly hungry before bed the next evening. Eat after every two to three hours. You should have knowledge of what you are eating. Unfortunately myriads of people do not have the basic knowledge and in some cases the labels on products are misleading and incorrect. Contd. on Page 74

73
Health Contd. from Page 72 Kindly understand that the problem with eating at night is not that your metabolism switches to storing calories as fat at night. Instead, weight gain is caused by the unhealthy habits that successively accompany bedtime snacking. Eating Before Bed May Have Some Benefits While eating before bed may not be the best idea for some people, it can be beneficial for others. It May Curb Nighttime Eating and Aid Weight Loss. Some evidence suggests that, rather than causing weight gain, eating a bedtime snack may actually help some people lose weight. If you’re a person who tends to eat a big portion of your calories during the night (usually after going to bed), having a snack after dinner can help control your desire for nighttime snacking. Studies suggest that adding a small after-dinner snack may help night-snackers feel satisfied enough to eat less than they would otherwise. Over time, it may also have the possible benefit of weight loss. It May Help You Sleep Better Not much research has been done on this topic, but many people report that eating something before bed helps them sleep better or prevents them from waking up hungry during the night. This makes sense, as a snack before bed may help you feel full and satisfied during the night. Getting enough sleep is extremely important, and sleep deprivation itself has been linked to overeating and weight gain. There is no evidence that a small, healthy snack before bed leads to weight gain. Therefore, if you feel that eating something before bed helps you fall asleep or stay asleep, and then you should feel good about doing so. Go for it. Now what you eat really matters. Junk food is the villain, here. It May Stabilize Morning Blood Sugar In the morning, your liver starts to produce extra glucose (blood sugar) to provide you with the energy you need to get up and start the day. This process doesn’t cause much of a change in blood sugar for people without diabetes. However, some people with diabetes can’t produce enough insulin to remove the extra glucose from the blood. For this reason, diabetics commonly wake up in the morning with high blood sugar, even if they haven’t eaten anything since the night before. This is called the Dawn Phenomenon. Other people may
74
www.lifestylesa.ca
experience nocturnal hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar during the night, which can disturb sleepif you experience either of these phenomena, you might need to talk to your doctor about having your medication adjusted. What should we all eat Before Bed? For most of the people, it’s perfectly okay to have a snack before bed. There is no recipe for the perfect bedtime snack, but there are some things you should keep in mind namely: Avoid Desserts and Junk Foods While eating before bed is not necessarily a bad thing, loading up on traditional dessert foods or junk foods such as ice cream, pie or chips isn’t a good idea. These foods, which are high in unhealthy fats and added sugars, trigger cravings and overeating. They cause us to exceed our daily calorie needs. Eating before bed doesn’t necessarily make you gain weight, but filling up on calorie-dense foods before bed certainly can and you should really avoid them. We should prefer nutrition dense foods. If you have a sweet tooth, try some berries or 2 -3 squares of dark chocolate over 70% (unless the caffeine bothers you). Or, if salty snacks are what you prefer, have a handful of nuts instead. Eat cashews and ground nut in moderation. One small apple
/saet_ca APRIL 2017
with skin and a tablespoon of almond butter is what I prefer. Combine Carbs with Protein or healthy Fat Pairing of complex carbs and protein, or a little healthyfat, is probably a good way to go. Complex carbs such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables provide you with a steady source of energy as you fall asleep and keep your blood sugar stable. Low fat dairy, fish, poultry or lean red meat is a good choice. Moreover, tryptophan a chemical in these foods regulates sleep. Other snack ideas include an apple with almond/peanut butter, whole grain crackers and a slice of turkey, or cheese. A combination of carbs and protein or fat is a good thing as a snack. Prefer oats[ steel cut], quinoa over wheat as it is genetically modified. Conclusion The answer to, whether or not it’s a bad idea, to eat before bed really depends on you and your habits. It’s not a good idea to make a habit of snacking on unhealthy foods before bed. It’s also incorrect to eat a large portion of your calories during the night. However, it’s perfectly fine to have a healthy snack before bed. Finish your eating 2 hours before you hit the bed. So eat healthy food that is low in calories, and high in protein and healthy fat. This will support good sleep no weight gain.

The 26-year-old actress and model also admitted that she loves working with Karl Lagerfeld, the creative director of Chanel, because unlike the majority of fashion industry figures, the German designer is very accepting of her individuality. “Karl has always, from the very beginning, made me feel like being myself was the right thing to do. Meanwhile, Stewart, who has starred in films like “Twilight”, “Equals” and “Snow White and the Huntsman”, said that she has made a “million bad movies” during her career. “My favourite thing in the world is when it feels like something starts to get up and walk itself. When something’s really good, and it’s rare — honestly I’ve made a million bad movies… “Not bad, it’s just like sometimes they don’t come together in a way that feels miraculous and when they do, it genuinely feels like something is floating and you’re all sort of blowing on it to keep it up and it’s like, that fully happened,” she said.

Natalie Portman welcomes home a baby girl named Amalia Millepied
T
he Oscar-winning 35-year-old actor Natalie Potman, who was last seen on the silver screen playing the role of former First Lady, Jackie Kennedy, gave birth to a baby girl named Amalia on February 22. The statement by her representative to E! News said, “Natalie Portman and her husband Benjamin Millepied welcomed a baby girl, Amalia Millepied, on February 22. Mother and baby are happy and healthy.” Portman and French choreographer Benjamin Millepied married in 2012. They had worked together in the criticallyacclaimed film Black Swan. The couple is also parents to their 5-year-old son Aleph. The star made her baby bump debut in September at the Venice Film Festival while promoting her movies Planetarium and Jackie. She was a part of Vanity Fair’s shoot where she was featured beautifully
with her baby bump by photographer Annie Leibovitz. She also wrote a piece for The New York Times’ T Magazine about how parenthood had changed her as a person. She wrote, “[Parenthood] made me much calmer under stress, because there’s that weird parent thing you develop, that when things get really bad, your voice gets calm and your blood pressure slows, and you can make everything okay again.” Although she attended the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards while expecting, Portman skipped the Oscars ceremony that was held recently, even though she was nominated, due to her delivery. She was, however, seen reading mean tweets on screen as a part of ‘Mean tweets — Oscars Edition by Jimmy Kimmel live’ that was screened at the ceremony.

diseases and cancer, with the majority of deaths occurring in low and middle-income countries. While sugars are found naturally in many foods, including fruits and milk, the addition of sugars to food products adds to the total energy content of the product. Sugar-sweetened beverages contain added sugars such as sucrose or high fructose corn syrup and a 330ml or 12oz portion of sugar-sweetened carbonated soft drink typically contains some 35g (almost nine teaspoons) of sugars and provides approximately 140 kcal of energy, generally with little other nutritional value. of the countries with the highest percapita consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages in the world - it is estimated that nearly 10% of total energy intake of adults comes from sugar-sweetened beverages. Evidence indicates that while nutrition education and other behaviour-change interventions designed to decrease consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages can be effective in reducing intake at the individual level .widespread and lasting behaviour change may be difficult to achieve in adults, as behaviours and food preferences are often established during childhood and can be difficult to modify later in life. To complement interventions targeting individual behaviour, regulatory actions designed to reduce consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and other energy-dense foods are being considered, including limiting the single serving size of such foods, limiting or removing access to such foods (e.g. vending machines) in public places and taxes or other pricing disincentives. Particular attention has been paid to taxing sugar-sweetened beverages as evidence suggests that such taxes could substantially reduce consumption and may contribute to a reduction in overweight and obesity. Some countries have already implemented taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages including Hungary, France, several states in the US and most recently Mexico, where (approximately 10%) tax on sugar-sweetened beverages is projected to decrease consumption by 10-12% and may have a substantial impact on reducing the prevalence of overweight and obesity in that country However in Denmark the Sugar & Fat Tax was in effective, People went to Neighbouring countries such as Sweden & Germany to buy Cheaper sugar products there.
