DIWALI: CELEBRATE THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS
The South Asian festival known as Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is a joyous five-day celebration akin to the various harvest festivals held throughout the world. Not unlike the Western traditions associated with Christmas, Diwali is a time for gathering with family members and friends, feasting on indulgent meals and sweeping away the trials and tribulations of the current year in order to welcome the new year with clean and open hearts and spirits.

Diwali Origins and Customs
D
iwali is the biggest and most widely celebrated South Asian festival. It is observed by various religious groups, including Hindus and Jains in South Asia, Malaysia and Singapore, as well as by those of South Asian heritage living around the world. Various traditions and customs are observed across the Indian regions, and the holiday also incorporates various legends. For some, Diwali celebrates the return of King Rama from exile following his triumphant battle against an evil king, while for others it is a time to honour Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. The word “Diwali” itself, however, loosely translates to “row of lights.” During the festival, homes and streets are decorated with small clay oil lamps ultimately symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. During Diwali it is customary to completely clean the home, purchase new clothes, forgive adversaries and forget past transgressions, as well as to hope for prosperity in the months ahead. “We would all go to the temple for prayers and eat amazing food from the temple kitchen. My brother would light giant fireworks for us to enjoy and the sky would be filled with the lights for hours because everyone would be on the rooftops celebrating,” recounts Bal Arneson, host of the cooking show Spice Goddess.

Diwali Food Traditions
W
hile many people refrain from eating meat during the holiday, vegetarian dishes such as curries and lentils are enjoyed. However, sweets are one of the most well-known elements associated with the holiday. “Weeks before, my mom would make all these sweets. They’re very labour-intensive, so she would get together with her friends and have these marathon sessions making them. Then they’d split them up and when you visited friends you’d share them,” says Preena Chauhan, Indian cooking instructor and owner of Arvinda’s, artfully created Indian spice blends. “I make gulab jabuns at home,” says Arneson. “They’re like mini doughnuts, and they’re my kids’ absolute favourite.”Every family puts their own spin on the snack-sized eats, and though they are delicious, they’re very much seen as a special-occasion treat. “In my home the favourite was the shakarpara,” says Chauhan. “You would only ever have them during Diwali, but after a couple of bites you would instantly be reminded of that time of the year.”

When enquired about his strengths, pat came the reply, “Leadership, Honesty, commitment, Relationship, Loyalty, and an ever Helpful Attitude is my forte.” Unsuccessful attempts- which the society calls a failure colloquially along the way - do not discourage or dissuade him. His avid experience tells him that success comes after work, unlike in a dictionary. During my confabulations, I found him to be incurably optimistic. As to date, he has amassed 21 awards and 23 achievements awards. Help as many people as possible to bring a positive change, is the mission statement of this philanthropist. He feels satisfied with his innings so far and being handsomely experienced now. He is in an exciting stage of his career to help novus homo. On family front he is blessed with ever supporting wife Mrs. Deep Chohan, daughter Henna and son Armaan. Both are happily married for 26 years. In closing, Chohan advises the community not to regret for the mistakes. Rather learn from them and keep moving. Do not allow fear inside you. A better future waits for him as well as his community. www.lifestylesa.ca

Look gorgeous this Diwali Once again it’s that time of the year when we love to splurge on shopping, clothes, shoes make-up and indulge in some lip smacking authentic Indian delicacies. And in the midst of our busy working hours and household chores, we all want to sport that diva-look at every get-together. Here are some tips: Minimal is the most: Firstly use the concealer to deal with fine lines. Take your khol pencil and draw a fine stroke in the inner and slightly upper lids of your eyes. To get away with the tiring look use voluminising mascara. Shiny lips are always pretty; finish your look with a neutral or pink shade of lipsticks. Highlight your best feature: If you think that the eyes are your best feature give them a pop effect. For a more striking look, draw a small wing. If you have translucent powder use it in between coating on mascara to plump up your lashes. If you want more attention to your lips, apply a dark shade of lipstick. For a fuller look apply a dash of pink or peach blush as it contours and defines your cheek bones. Dramatic eyes: nothing can beat the smoky eyes for your evening look. For the perfect smoky eyes select eye shadows that will compliment your eyes. Since Indians have mostly black or brown eyes warm shades like gold, brown, charcoal black and grey, work the best. For simple and fast smoky eyes, use color eye pencils to draw a thick line on the upper eyelid from the inner corner to the outer corner and smudge it from the outer corner of your eye, follow the same on your lower eye lid to get the complete look. Traditional you: During this festive season we all love to dress in our traditional attire and so should be our make-up as well. Here again your make-up should compliment your getup. If your sari or salwar suit is too heavy it is ideal to keep the make-up simple and minimum and vice versa. For a neutral look that will suit any outfit, use gold on the eyelid and dark brown on the outer corner of the eye and blend it towards the crease line to enhance the shape of the eyes. Finish with a wing liner on the upper lid and a thick black kajal on the lower lid. Wear a bindi for the traditional feel. Natural look: Many women love to flaunt the nude look. Using light pastel shades such as pink and purple on the eyes will add freshness on the skin. Use light orange lipstick on your lips and the cheeks to get a triadic combination of colors.

favourites for those who enjoy colour drama. You need not match these tones with your outfits necessarily, let it colour block.
4 Pastels: Soft colour tones are always a hot favourite as these are easy going and not a strain to the eyes. Everything around us in monsoon is so lush and green, a little hint of colour does all the work. Soft beige, rose, lilac and sky blue. 4 Red is evergreen: Whether dressing up for your weekend routine or monsoon weddings, red is an all-time favourite. This time this colour can be worn in all tones of red ranging from coral red, to classic red carpet red to deep red. 4 Frost: One may also adorn frosted shades of gold, bronze and rose this season. These frosted shades look good with solid colour dresses or your Indian attire. Keep it strictly for the evenings. 4 Solid colours: Purple, teal and green are the solid colour hot

My joy knew no bounds as I was on my way to engage in conversation with Dr. Avinash aka Avi Verma, promoter and Chairman of NMEC [North Shore Medical Education Center,Chicago,USA], who has been conferred upon an Honorary Doctorate by the Avalon University School of Medicine, one of the prestigious University in the Caribbean Islands. This was for his notable contribution in his field of medical education.

s I was rummaging through the crisp information about Dr. Verma beforehand, I was excited to walk the talk and share his happiness on this maiden lifetime achievement. After I settled for a spirited interaction, Dr. Verma informed that he landed in USA three decades ago for a better quality of life. He felt that the best way to predict his future is to create it. Back home in India, born to a renowned educationist family of Principal B R Verma, he proved to be a chip of the old block. Like his reverend father and by dint of hard work, Dr. Verma began his professional career as an income tax lawyer in 1976 in India. His hardworking nature, coupled with his strong ethical behavior, made him one of the most sought after lawyers in Punjab. Without wasting time, Dr. Verma kept on studying along with work and in 1991, found his niche in the finance business. After working for a small finance company, he ventured to open his own finance company. With hard work ,honesty, dedication and courteous personal service he was extremely successful. For almost fifteen years Dr. Verma dedicated himself to bringing inhonest and high quality financial services to his customers. It was his incurably optimistic thought process and a fair, firm, and flexible approach that helped him to find his moorings in time in USA.

NEW YEAR SPECIAL
NEW YEAR TRADITIONS, CUSTOMS AND CELEBRATIONS FROM
AROUND THE WORLD
Many New Year traditions, customs and celebrations that we take for granted actually date from ancient times. This year, ring out the old and ring in the new with a New Year tradition—or two!
MAKE SOME NOISE In ancient Thailand, guns were fired to frighten off demons. In China, firecrackers routed the forces of darkness. In the early American colonies, the sounds of pistol shots rang through the air. Today, Italians let their church bells peal, the Swiss beat drums, and the North Americans sound sirens and party horns to bid the old year farewell. EAT LUCKY FOOD Many New Year’s traditions surround food. Here are a few: In the southern US, black-eyed peas and pork foretell good fortune.Eating any ring-shaped treat (such as a donut) symbolize “coming full circle” and leads to good fortune. In Dutch homes, fritters called olie bollen are served. The Irish enjoy pastries called bannocks. The tradition of eating 12 grapes at midnight comes from Spain. In India and Pakistan, rice promises prosperity. Apples dipped in honey are a Rosh Hashanah tradition. In Swiss homes, dollops of whipped cream, symbolizing the richness of the year to come, are dropped on the

floors (and allowed to remain there!) DRINK A BEVERAGE Although the pop of a champagne cork signals the arrival of the New Year around the world, some countries have their own traditions. Wassail, the Gaelic term for “good health” is served in some parts of England. Spiced “hot pint” is
the Scottish version of Wassail. Traditionally, the Scots drank to each others’ prosperity and also offered this warm drink to neighbors along with a small gift. In Holland, toasts are made with hot, spiced wine. GIVE A GIFT New Year’s Day was once the time to swap presents. Gifts of gilded nuts or coins marked the start of the new year in Rome. Eggs, the symbol of fertility, were exchanged by the Persians. Early Egyptians traded earthenware flasks. In Scotland, coal, shortbread and silverware were traditionally exchanged for good luck.

NEW YEAR SPECIAL
PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD In Scotland, the custom of first-footing is an important part of the celebration of Hogmanay, or New Year’s Eve Day. This practice holds that the first foot to cross a threshold after midnight will predict the next year’s fortune. Although the tradition varies, those deemed especially fortunate as “first footers” are new brides, new mothers, those who are tall and dark (and
32

handsome?) or anyone born on January 1. TURN OVER A NEW LEAF The dawn of a new year is an opportune time to take stock of your life. Jews who observe Rosh
Hashanah make time for personal introspection and prayer, as well as visiting graves. Christian churches hold “watch-night” services, a custom that began in 1770 at Old St. Georges Methodist Church in Philadelphia. The practice of making New Year’s resolutions, said to have begun with the Babylonians as early as 2600 B.C., is another way to reflect on the past and plan ahead. NEW YEAR’S FOLKLORE Some customs and beliefs are simply passed down through the ages. Here are some of our favorite age-old sayings and proverbs. On New Year’s Eve, kiss the person you hope to keep kissing. If New Year’s Eve night wind blow south, It betokeneth warmth and growth. For abundance in the new year, fill your pockets and cupboards today. If the old year goes out like a lion, the new year will come in like a lamb. Begin the new year square with every man.(i.e., pay your debts!) –Robert B. Thomas, founder of The Old Farmer’s Almanac So, whether we resolve to return borrowed farm equipment or drop a few pounds, we’re tapping into an ancient and powerful longing for a fresh start!

Importance of
Health
Insurance in your
life
A health insurance is an important part of making a financial planning in the era of skyrocketing medical costs. Medical inflation has been aggravating at its full spree which makes it all the more important to buy a Health Insurance plan which could sponsor the hospitalization and medical treatment bills or expenses. It is essential to calculate following parameters to get a best health plan for you and your family. 1. Check for the Waiting Period Clause You must be feeling care free after taking insurance, but your health insurance comes with a waiting period clause for specific conditions. There is an initial period clause which says that any hospitalization claim will not be admissible in first 30 days of the policy commencement apart from accidental hospitalization. The pre-existing diseases or conditions are also not covered immediately after you purchase a policy. There is a waiting period ranging from 2 years to 4 years as per the plan conditions in the industry. Also, there are certain surgeries and treatments like hernia, cataract, joint replacement, etc. which can be treated after a specific waiting period of 1 or 2 years. 2. Check for Sub-limits There are certain capping or sub-limits in your health plan which says that the specific kind of expenses are paid by the insurance company upto a specific limit and beyond that the insured or customer has to bear them at his own. Check for the sub-limits in your health plan to avoid any last minute surprises at the time of claim. 3. Check for Network Hospitals The insurance companies offering health plans have certain empaneled network hospitals with whom they have a tie up. Any hospitalization or treatment taken in the mentioned or specified network hospital list is done on the cashless basis subject to
46
www.lifestylesa.ca
policy conditions. Also, a treatment in non-network hospital may not offer cashless treatment and some insurers have a co-pay clause if you take a treatment in non-network hospital. 4. Check for the Claim Process Different insurance companies have different claim procedures. Some settle or administer claims through Third Party Administrators (TPA’s) and some have their own in house claim settlement unit to foster quick and hassle free claim processing. Also, check the claim settlement ratio of the insurer you intend to buy a health plan from to have a clear picture on the number of claims settled by the insurer. It is important
to have handy information on claims procedure to have a smooth and hassle free treatment in the times of hospitalization. 5. Compare & Buy It is important to take a right buying decision which can be done by comparing the available health insurance plans online. You can compare the price, key features, policy benefits, value added benefits, eligibility, exclusions, etc. of multiple health insurance plans to make a right informed choice of your own without any interference of the agents. Do evaluate your need and make a right buying decision by checking the above stated parameters. October 2016

Tips to dress your best this festive season
W
ant to stand out this festive season? Try a layered outfit and belt up flared outfits with stylish waist belts, suggests an expert.
Here are some pointers by designer Mrunalini Rao to keep in mind for this festive season: 1. Capes, inbuilt dupattas, trails are all some forms of layering with variations in lengths and embellishment. Lehengas, anarkalis and lachas might sound very routine and basic, but we as designers have come up with such amazing variations that an anarkali doesn’t look anymore like what it is called. 2. Printed long dresses with capes, embellished peplums with skirts, layered lehengas with laacha, lehengas with dupattas fixed on the blouses to form trails, cold shoulder and off shoulder choli with transparent dupattas, are a few styles for this season. 3. Silk, raw silk, chiffon, georgette and tulle are the fabrics for the season. 4. A must-have for this season are these new waist belts that a lot of designers have made for this season. Clinch your waist when you wear a lot of these flared layers as suggested, so that you can still look thin and smart while you wear a lot of volume too. 5. Dark colours contrasted with pretty pastels. The look is outstanding when you wear dark colours and layer them with nice pastel shades.

Free Yourself From Fashion Rules Here are 5 fashion rules you’ve got to break now. Go, steal the spotlight! Rule #1: You can’t wear denim to office A District Collector in Odisha may have barred people from visiting him in office wearing T-shirt and jeans, but the truth is that denim has acquired workwear status. You can wear them for interviews and formal dinners. Even the hitherto frowned upon trend of ‘denim-on-denim’ is kosher now. The trick lies in pairing pieces of varying washes - light denim shirt with indigo jeans, or a dark jacket with a light-wash, sky-blue, pencil-fit denim skirt. Just remember: on-trend yet office-appropriate. Rule #2: You’ve to wear red for your wedding Buck the obvious choice and choose colours like soft pink and icy blue or emerald and sunshine yellow. Throw attention on your sexy choli by ditching the dupatta. You can choose black too, which was once considered inauspicious. For the mehendi and reception, black attire paired with metallics like gold or silver works. Rule #3: You need a model figure to wear Maxis and Midis Don’t have the famous Katrina Kaif curves? But then a few of us do. That doesn’t mean you can’t wear floor-grazing dresses though. Focus on the right fit. For maxis, choose solid colours that skim the length of your body. For midi skirts, go for a high-waisted styles. Say ‘hi’ to heels - if not stilettos, go for wedges. Rule #4: You can’t sport metallics as daywear Sparkling accoutrements can be worn any time of the day, provided you keep the look dressed down. Add a subtle sparkle by sporting either knitwear, jackets, blouses, jeans, pants, skirts or scarves that have a hint of lurex (gold or silver metallic thread) running through them. Here, the overall shiny effect is restrained. Remember to stick to one sparkly item at a time. Rule #5: Men can’t wear pink Gender fluidity is the new fashion buzzword. ‘Men in pink’, in fact, was the top trend at most of the Fall 2016 fashion weeks. Take cues from Gucci and Pigalle to sport various shades of pink. If you don’t wish to go all out, start by sporting a pink shirt to work; it looks great with a suit as it complements most colours. Trends 2016
A woman can never have too many shoes. However, we do have a bucket list of shoe styles to swing from one season to another season. Each year brings in a renewed set of footwear trends that zest things up below the ankles and this season’s trends are momentous, daring, and totally drool-worthy!
B
e it the couture heels to comfortable flats, there are preeminent options from designers to brands, who are setting the mood for this season. So, shoe lovers, rejoice there is a pair for everyone! We’ve rounded up the finest of 2016 shoe trends from shelves and fashion weeks around the world just for you, your style, your height and your body type. From the latest “it” gladiators to must-have heel standouts, we’ve gathered the best shoes of the season, courtesy Samarpita Dasgupta, Fashion Director, Roposo. Here’s a look at best of 2016, in the terms of shoe trends: Gladiator bandwagon The gladiator sandals this season deserve some empire hold in your wardrobe, as they are a wardrobe staple. Whether you want classic lace-up flats or the leather high heels with Roman-esque influence, there’s one for everyone. From flow-y summer dresses to off shoulder peasant tops, gladiator sandals redefine the summer trends for footwear. Ankle strap gladiators are the safest and most multi-purpose bet, whereas nude gladiators take away attention from chubby legs. Mojri Magic Commonly known as Juttis, these are particularly in vogue this season, especially when you plan to don that ethnic outfit. Be careful to not pair them with a sari unless you are planning to bring out an all new boho chic. Adorned with pompoms, sequins, embroidery and mirror work, these add a bit of desi twist to the good old bellies.

Needless to mention, they look the best in bright hues with a touch of gold or silver.
Sneaker freak One would’ve thought that sneakers were primarily designed and structured to be worn for outdoorsy activities or occasions that screamed wild and adventurous. Not only do they still fit into that bill, but have also been far taken out of that stereotypical view and used as a very fashionable touch to numerous outfits. Not only giving one a sporty twist, these shoes have been redefined by many who’ve been bold enough to try them on over dresses and more formal pieces of clothing. Not one to wear off easily, sneakers is the in thing and is here to stay. White Streak White has often been an understated colour though used plenty in day to day fashion. With the trending boom of plimsolls, sneakers and canvases, white shoes have become a must have in every woman’s shoe collection this year. These standout shoes are the perfect blend of casual and trendy. One can’t go wrong when pairing them with any outfit in literal terms. Why not wear white all summer long? Slip-on that chic October 2016
This season we are all Yespadrilles for channeling the summer vibes into a style symbol. From the rubber soled to the straw ones, slide into a sporty style with a little lift or a simple black pair with an interesting fit. This is by far the most comfortable trend for shoes for seasons to come and it has taken the fashion world by the storm, from high-streetstyle the international fashion weeks. The slip-ons have many facets, but one of the strongest look is pairing it up with a boxy top and easy pants. Others include the good old white tee and distressed denim and a pretty floral dress with a summer jacket. Unique heels: To stay on the cutting edge of fashion one must introspect about innovative footwear heels designs which imbue metallic hues, geometric forms, embroideries and interstellar designs. From suave shapes, and unconventional structures, these futuristic heels are making its round off the runway and into the markets. From intergalactic stilettos to geometric wedge heel pumps and mirror covered platform heels, these unique heel designs offer the ability to break free from the bandwagon monotone. It is true when they say shoes speak louder than words; however it is important to pick the right words errr shoes! A pair of shoes is just not an accessory that supports your outfit, but a pair can be an outfit by itself. It is okay to reverse match when the shoe is that good.

bout 9 Millions of Canadian kids are heading back to school after the Summer Holidays raising the questions of what age is too young to have a phone and how owning one helps or harms kid. A 2015 Study by MediaSmarts a Canadian not for profit organization says that over 25% of Grade 4 owns a cell phone, this gradually increases as the child ages, by grade 10 About 90% own a cell phone, the youngest age group of age 7 was also found to have a cell phone at school. A question arises how young is too young to have a cell phone in School. The parent of one eight-year-old thinks that’s too young. “I am totally against it,” says Melissa Joyce on her daughter Aniah having a cellphone, although the competitive dancer and avid soccer player keeps asking for one. “Kids should just be kids.” A cellphone for Aniah would open a “whole other realm that she doesn’t need to be exposed to,” says Joyce. She notes access to technology and the internet, notably social media, is especially problematic for young girls.
Media education specialist at MediaSmarts, says the omnipresence of cellphones could keep kids plugged in to social media, which can be problematic. “Social media can exacerbate problems” like bullying, harassment and FOMO (fear of missing out), he says, noting school should be one of place kids can have “digital breaks.” Over half of Grade 11 students sleep with their phones because fear of missing messages. “Bringing cellphones to school could bring with it other problems you might have,” Some schools have considered banning cellphones. The Toronto District School Board, Canada’s largest, did just that from 2007 to 2011. “We all know that technology is here to stay, and so the school board has to get with the times,” However, many schools and classes have increasingly been using technology to teach. The results vary. “There has been a lot of research on whether or not devices in school are useful,” “We are still in the discovery stage.” However, not everyone has been able to integrate technology in the curriculum. movie review
Mirzya Movie Review
M
irzya is inspired by the story of the star-crossed lovers Mirza-Sahiban, a popular folklore from Punjab. In this screen adaptation, the scenario plays out in Rajasthan, shot mesmerizingly by cinematographer, Pawel Dyllus. At the core of the story are Mohnish and Suchi, who were separated when the pre-teen boy is sent to a juvenile correction home for murder. Years later, Suchi returns from London to marry Prince Karan (Anuj). By a quirk of fate, she discovers her childhood friend, who now calls himself Aadil, in the palace stable. During her riding lessons, the curly-haired to-be princess discovers that the embers of her love for the stable-hand have not really died down. On his part, Aadil realises that if he must win his childhood sweetheart over, he has to cross swords with the Prince and Suchi’s father (Art Malik), who is hell-bent on her wedlock to royalty. In the hands of the astute Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra (Rang De Basanti, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag), this musical, which has a melodious score by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy with additional tracks by Daler Mehndi, unfolds languidly in a Broadway-style format. Interspersing the present-day track with a period folklore, Mehra and Gulzar (credited with screenplay and lyrics) give viewers an engaging and lavish big-screen experience. Though not a musical in the literal sense, the songs take the story forward in ballet style. The visuals of the chorus dancers dressed in bright Rajasthani costumes is breath-taking. The downside, though, is that the passion between the lead players doesn’t really set the screen ablaze. Also, there is absence of real conflict and suspense as the folklore is quite known. Harshvardhan and Saiyami come from good acting stock. But they’re still rough around the edges. Harsh manages to give glimpses of his vulnerability and intensity as a performer. And, also his physical strength. While Saiyami, who withholds emotions in a few scenes, sparkles, Anuj makes an impressive debut. If you are drawn to stories that are high on aesthetics with lyrical narratives, Mirzya is a portrait that deserves a long look.

Himachal’s resorts can be positioned better for foreigners:
Travel guides Tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh could turn out to be hotter for international backpackers too if positioned properly. Members of the international hospitality industry say the authorities need to showcase the state’s potential to the global travellers in their dialect, through micro-blogging and online videos.

“When a tourist is planning his foreign trip, he may not know exactly where to begin. But he’s interested to know the visiting place’s culture, history, nature, people and the local facilities,” visiting Germany’s travel guide Eu-Asien De’s managing director Mark Lich said. He said a lot of German travellers say India is their dream destination. “But the only hiccup with the German visitors, who prefer spending lavishly overseas, is that they expect that they should have all first-hand information before finalizing their itinerary,” the 27-year-old online travel guide said. He was here along with his Russian-born father Gennady Lich - who migrated to Germany in 1995 - at the invitation of the state tourism department to attend the two-day Himachal Travel Mart over the Weekend. During the first such event to showcase the state’s potential, 1,260 business-to-business (B2B) meetings were held between the state tourism stakeholders and the travel delegates mainly from Britain, France, Germany, Greece, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the UAE, besides India. Britain-based travel guide Anita Larkin was impressed with the grand British-era heritage of Shimla, once British India’s summer capital. “It is lovely and homely to be in this town,”
she said as she took a casual stroll through the streets of this capital town. Strolling down the Mall, a famous shopping street, she said: “This is my first visit to the town and the state. It, of course, gives me a feeling of my hometown in Yorkshire. Before coming here, I was not familiar about the grand legacy of the British still preserved here.” “I would love to bring tourists from Britain to this place where my grandfather’s sister’s husband, a man named Bancraft, spent his lifetime,” Larkin, who runs Ladies on Tour agency that organises holidays for women only. She also visited the local Christ Church - built in 1857 in neo-Gothic style. Echoing Lich’s views, restaurateur-cum-travel advisor Richard Key of South Africa said tourist destinations in this Himalayan nation have much potential to allure high-end tourists from his country. “The whites are difficult to convince. They prefer to travel to Europe and Australia. They have misconceptions that they will fall sick if they travel to India. They are also fearful about chaotic traffic, filthy surroundings and noise and air pollution,” he said. “The pollution-free environs of this state can be an allurement for them. For me it’s the
October 2016
travel most beautiful place but it needs to be showcased at the international expos to change their mindset,” said Key, who is a fan of India. Second, he said, the state tourism agency needed to develop tour packages to allure international travellers. Records with the state tourism department said 406,000 international tourists arrived in the state last year against 17.125 million domestic travellers. The hill state has a bed capacity of 70,869 in about 2,600 hotels, including state-run Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation’s 59 units. Lich said there was no authentic travel information available in German about the favourite tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh. “The state tourism department should provide the literature in German online and promote its destinations through videos on YouTube,” he said. Writer Anoj Tillekeratne from Sri Lanka’s travel magazine Travel Talk said before coming here he had no information about this state’s tiny helmets spread over the

Himalayan peaks, adjoining Tibet, that takes one to a land of Buddhism and virgin nature. “Every year tens of thousands of Sri Lankans travel to India to visit Bodh Gaya, considered the birthplace of Buddhism, for spirituality. In this travel mart I came to know about a treasure trove of Buddhist monasteries that this state hosts,” Tillekeratne said. For instance, near Kaza in the remote Spiti Valley is Tabo, known for a more than 1,000-year-old cave Buddhist monastery. Founded in 996, Tabo is located at an altitude of 3,050 m and is also called the Ajanta of the Himalayas. Tourism commissioner Mohan Chauhan
said the response of the international travel delegates was positive. “The participants, mainly comprising members from the hospitality industry, got 40 to 50 business queries from the national and international delegates. The results will start coming after five to six months,” he said. Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation managing director Dinesh Malhotra said they are going to redesign the existing literature around the state’s allures -- the majestic Himalayas, gurgling rivers, virgin mountains, cool hills coated with Himalayan cedars and rich culture. Tourism contributes 7.2 percent of the state gross domestic product..

ew Year is considered to be an important time by the Canadian people, and therefore, grand preparations go into organizing mush grander New Year celebration events. Prior to the day of the New Year, i.e. on the occasion of New Year Eve’s, small as well as big parties are organized all around the Canada, which go on till the early morning of the New Year Day. Apart from social parties organized in club, bars, and discotheques, people also organize private parties at home in which all near and dear ones are invited. These parties are bursting with great music, great dishes, and vibrant drinking options on the feast. Everyone eat, drink, sing, and dance all through the night till the dawn to mark a grand welcome to the coming time of the New Year. Party culture is more prominent and visible in the urban part of Canada. People living in rural areas celebrate more of a traditional New Year. People living in the rural part of Canada, and particularly in the Canadian province of Quebec, usually go out with their friends near a pond or a river for ice fishing on New Year’s Eve. They spend the entire night together while ice fishing and celebrating New Year. The long night parties leave little for everyone to hold anything on New Year Day, and therefore, it is mostly spend in resting and

recovering. However, some people prefer to plan a picnic to nearby panorama, popular markets, or a tourist place. However, tradition of bursting fireworks is something which is enthusiastically and evenly followed in both the urban and the rural part of Canada. Some of the most extraordinary crafted show of fireworks occurs in the major cities of Canada including Montreal and the capital city of Ottawa, where technology driven fireworks are blown off as soon as the midnight brings New Year on its rucksack. These firework shows are enthusiastically awaited by everyone. People from distant places come and participate to be a part of such extravagant celebration affairs. They are well complemented by the great music, which is served during the entire night by prominent deejays, musicians, singers, and different bands of the country and the world. These celebrations draw thousands and millions of people from around the globe. With the moment of the arrival of New Year, everyone wish each other, and spiritedly pray for a peaceful and pleasant time ahead. Other than these, there has been an increased trend of organizing sports events, magic shows, and special cultural programs on the occasion. Among sports centered events, the adventurous winter
sports of snowboarding and skiing draw maximum visitors. There are few customs and traditions which are rigorously followed with a belief that they bring good luck, peace, and prosperity to everyone. One such belief calls for going for a polar bear swim on New Year. There is also a tradition of clapping and roaring at the time of midnight when New Year arrives in Canada. It is done with a belief that it sways away all the past evils and negative energies. In Canada, kissing is considered to be a traditional way of showing love and conferring wishes to someone, and also a way of strengthening pleasant ties with people. Therefore, people in Canada prefer to kiss and wish Happy New Year in the midnight. Also, exchanging New Year gifts is also a way of expressing New Year wishes in Canada. First footing tradition is also prominently followed in Canada, as a part of which a male and preferably a young person is expected to enter the household on the midnight of New Year. Other than that, consuming a bowl of black-eyed pea soup, collecting coals from hearth in the midnight, visiting friends’ place in early hours of New Year, etc. are other prominent New Year customs, which are still followed by almost everyone in Canada.
