Mortgage insurance:

Protect your most important investment

I

f you have a mortgage on your home, there is a chance that you have mortgage insurance. The main objective of mortgage insurance to protect your most important asset. This becomes an absolute necessary for unforeseen emergency such as you become seriously ill or die before paying off the mortgage, the coverage will help to pay off your mortgage. It helps in offering peace of mind and also reassures that your family will continue to feel secure and safe in your own home. Inevitable situation can strike anyone anytime, then why take a chance ?

SANDEEP AHUJA CHS

Buying an insurance policy that really protects you There are many terms and exclusions associated with mortgage insurance policies. Learn thoroughly what they mean and how they apply to you. You should call an insurance company directly (NOT the bank that sold you the coverage) for clarification about pre-existing medical conditions. Call your doctor to clarify details of

any pre-existing medical conditions that you might be concerned about. You have time to review. You usually have 10-30 days to review your policy after the initial purchase (this is known as a “cool-down” or “free look” period). If you have already purchased your mortgage insurance you can cancel anytime. Keep in mind, however, that you may lose premiums already paid. Always shop around. Before buying a policy shop around for the lowest rates with best coverage. Consider buying mortgage insurance from a licensed insurance broker who will explore any medical issues upfront. You should also consider buying or topping up an individual life insurance policy to cover your mortgage. Know your coverage. You may already have adequate insurance coverage through your work or other policies. Insurance experts say it’s better to buy one traditional insurance policy than purchase a number of small policies for a variety of products. Be sure you need it. The purpose of credit life mortgage insurance is to protect your loved ones from making mortgage payments if something happens to you. This type of insurance may not be applicable if you do not have any dependents whom you would like t protect financially if something happens to you.

Diwali lets us look past our differences and cherish what we have in common – a love for

celebration!

Deepawali or Diwali is certainly the biggest and the brightest of all Hindu festivals. It’s the festival of lights that’s marked by four days of celebration, which literally illumines the hearts and homes of people with brilliance, and dazzles all with its joy. Each of the four days in the festival of Diwali is separated by a different tradition, but what remains true and constant is the celebration of life, its enjoyment and goodness.

The Origin of Diwali Historically, the origin of Diwali can be traced back to ancient India, when it was probably an important harvest festival. However, there are various legends pointing to the origin of Diwali or ‘Deepawali.’ Some believe it to be the celebration of the marriage of Lakshmi with Lord Vishnu whereas in Bengal the festival is dedicated to the worship of Mother Kali, the dark goddess of strength. Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed God, the symbol of auspiciousness and wisdom, is also worshiped in most Hindu homes on this day. In Jainism, Deepawali has an added significance to the great event of Lord Mahavira attaining the eternal bliss of nirvana. Diwali also commemorates the return of Lord Rama along with Sita and Lakshman from his fourteen year long exile and vanquishing the demon-king Ravana. In joyous celebration of the return of their king, the people of Ayodhya, the Capital of Rama, illuminated the kingdom with earthen diyas (oil lamps).

These Four Days Each day of Diwali has its own tale, legend and myth to tell. The first day of the festival Naraka Chaturdasi marks the vanquishing of the demon Naraka by Lord Krishna and his wife Satyabhama. Amavasya, the second day of Deepawali, marks the worship of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth in her most benevolent mood, fulfilling the wishes of her devotees. Amavasya also tells the story of Lord Vishnu, who in his dwarf incarnation vanquished the tyrant Bali, and banished him to hell. Bali was

9

allowed to return to earth once a year, to light millions of lamps to dispel the darkness and ignorance, and spread the radiance of love and wisdom. It is on the third day of Deepawali — Kartika Shudda Padyami that Bali steps out of hell and rules the earth according to the boon given by Lord Vishnu. The fourth day is referred to as Yama Dvitiya (also called Bhai Dooj) and on this day sisters invite their brothers to their homes.

The Significance of Lights & Fire crackers All the simple rituals of Diwali hold significance and have a story to tell. The illumination of homes with lights and the skies with firecrackers is an expression of obeisance to the heavens for the attainment of health, wealth, knowledge, peace and prosperity. According to one belief, the sound of fire-crackers is an indication of the joy of the people living on earth, making the gods aware of their plentiful state. Still another possible reason has a more scientific basis: the fumes produced by the crackers kill a lot of insects and mosquitoes, found in plenty after the rains.

The Tradition of Gambling The tradition of gambling on Diwali also has a legend behind it. It is believed that on this day, Goddess Parvati played dice with her husband Lord Shiva, and she decreed that whosoever gambled on Diwali night would prosper throughout the ensuing year. Diwali is associated with wealth and prosperity in many ways, and the festival of ‘Dhanteras’ (‘dhan’ means wealth; ‘teras’ means 13th) is celebrated two days before the festival of lights.

From Darkness Unto Light... In each legend, myth and story of Deepawali lays the significance of the victory of good over evil; and it is with each Deepawali and the lights that illuminate our homes and hearts, that this simple truth finds new reason and hope. From darkness unto light — the light that empowers us to commit ourselves to good deeds, that which brings us closer to divinity. During Diwali, lights illuminate every corner of India and the scent of incense sticks hangs in the air, mingled with the sounds of fire-crackers, joy, togetherness and hope. Diwali is celebrated around the globe. Outside India, it is more than a Hindu festival; it’s a celebration of SouthAsian identities. If you are away from the sights and sounds of Diwali, light a diya, sit quietly, shut your eyes, withdraw the senses, concentrate on this supreme light and illuminate the soul.

Twinkling Glass lamp using Globule This is one of the best Diwali decoration ideas to implement this Diwali. Stick globule on a waste compact disk (CD). Make a circle over and over to finally get a craft, which looks like a pen-stand. Once done, put a Diwali lamp between the circle and let it twinkle!

Diwali Lamp From Plastic Bottle This beautiful multicolored flower craft requires a plastic bottle, scissors, gum and colored thread. Simply cut the bottles as shown in the picture, put some glue on the outer sides of the plastic and then sprinkle glitter. Once it dries, tie it with a thread so that they don’t fold towards inside. Here I’ve used a candle as a lightsource, you may change it as per your preference. Put this lamp between a Rangoli and make them brighter.

Candle Decoration Using Dry-Leaf You require a few basic things to create this beautiful masterpiece. A candle, glue and simple waste leaves is all you need. Roll over the glue on candle and paste leaves on it. You can make it tight with the help of a spoon. Try making these attractive candles at home as you can even gift these to your friends.

Guidelines to help you out in event of a

vehicle accident

A tips:

n accident or fender bender usually takes up a lot of time and can be very stressful. We need to keep our cool and remember the following

1. Remember to take the other party’s name, contact number, driver’s license number, the plate number and the vehicle description - that is, the make, model and color. 2. If necessary, stop the passing vehicles and try to get witness’s contact numbers. 3. If you have a phone with a camera feature, do take pictures of the vehicle and the scene. It may help the ICBC adjuster make a decision on the claim. 4. Call 604 520 8222 or 1-877-388-4440 for Punjabi speaking Claims Service Representatives to take your claim. Before you make your call, have your plate number and your Driver’s license number ready. You need to know the closest intersection you were at and the direction you were traveling. 5. If you have purchased a Roadside plus coverage or a Roadstar package, you will

be eligible to rent a car up to $50 a day up to a $750 or $500 depending on the package 6. If you have purchased the Roadside Plus coverage, and if your vehicle gets towed to a tow yard due to the accident, you can take a taxi or public transportation to your home or work or to the car rental agency and the expense up to a maximum of $100 will be reimbursed by ICBC. Should you require more information on the Roadplus package and Roadside Package offered by ICBC, please contact your broker. Things to do in case of an emergency • Stay calm, keep yourself and others safe. If you can’t get out of your car, turn on your hazard lights. • If anyone is injured, call 911. • Look at the accident scene and make sure that you are not in danger of being hit by another vehicle. • E xchange information with the other drivers involved. Get their names, addresses, phone numbers, licence information, insurance company name and

policy number. • Obtain the contact information of any witnesses who are at the scene. • Take photographs of the accident, including the damage to the car and road conditions. • Call your insurance company right away. Things to avoid in case of an emergency • Move anyone who is injured – wait for medical help to arrive. • Leave the scene of the accident. • Accept a direct offer of payment of damage from the other driver. Settling for direct payment may not be as advantageous as it seems. If you’re not at fault, the accident won’t affect your driving record nor will you have to pay a deductible. • Sign any documents other than the police report. • Get your vehicle repaired without clearing it with your insurance company; they may refer you to a repair facility where the work is guaranteed.

now at home!

You don’t always have to visit a salon for the same, its pretty easy to do it at home...

D

oing a cleanup at home is not difficult at all. If you have the right products, the process becomes simpler.

Get a face wash that suits your skin type: Before you begin with the process, wash your face with a face wash that is suits your skin type. For example, if you have oily skin, a one that contains salicylic acid is right for you. Similarly, if you have dry skin, a one that moisturises your face is ideal for you. A mild scrub to eliminate dead skin cells: Dead skin cells make your face look dull. Thus to enhance your skin tone, use a scrub that not only suits your skin type but also takes care of blackhead problems. Apply a moisturising face pack: No matter what your skin type is, the application of a moisturising face pack makes your skin soft and supple and also improves your skin tone. Take one spoon of honey along with aloe vera juice or neem powder and apply it evenly on your face. A nourishing face cream to make your skin soft: Another thing that will make your skin soft is the application of a nourishing face cream. Right after you’ve applied the face pack, make it a point to evenly apply the cream on your face and neck.

“For Better experience, Best taste” A recent maiden visit to IHOP- Restaurant company franchisee (20 years in existence) on 82nd ave and 120th street, Surrey(BC Canada)happens to be an interesting one. When I finally arrived, a hearty, hospitable reception by Mr Gary Kelbert Owner/ Operator put me at ease. By Surinder Shaun Kochhar

F

irst of all, an ever smiling logo of this IHOP set me into a good mood with hunger hormone ghrelin gushing in my stomach. As I could not help smiling, what flashed into my mind was an image of laughing Buddha – which depicts plenitude of happiness and satisfaction. “Everything You Love About Breakfast”, the hook line of the company gives a fair idea that they are specialist and cater to breakfast eating in particular. To my pleasant surprise they serve with pleasure a multicultural and wide variety of items which are a part of lunch and supper with their leading competitors as the place [s] are open

up to late hours on seven days a week and around the year. IHOP is an acronym which stands for International House of Pancake. True to its humble beginnings, 58 years back and counting, they started as pancake specialist and now they serve over 12 types of pancakes. More so, French toast with scores of bread types, omelettes, onion rings, waffles, crème crepes, salads, soups, sandwiches, burgers, fish, chicken burgers, beverages hot and cold, deserts, and other non- vegetarian items to quote a few. In fine, one can safely say, that it caters to every strata of society and age group, be it for kids, adults or 55 plus. The food quality with this, over a billion dollor company with charity in their heart, is par excellence. Change is the only constant factor in life. With restaurant industry new items keep on getting added in succession to tickle the taste buds. Further enquiries revealed that they are adding new items in beverages and meals in few weeks with festivities around the corner.

After eating, I came out full and satisfied due to the amazing experience, and the great tasting food. I hope to see you soon. Happy eating!!!!

Kids Play holds an anti- drugs and g

O

n Wednesday, October 14, Kids Play organised an anti Drugs and Gangs Presentation at Taj Convention Centre with over 400 attendees. The audience varied from the age group of 10 to 25 years. Kids Play along with Odd Squad Productions Society, a non-profit organisation which creates multimedia presentations to deliver a message across a large area made it clear through their presentation that if one considers indulging in this sort of negative behaviour, the consequences are frightening. Their goal is to create awareness with the help of communication tools like the usage of graphic images, videos of people residing in the downtown east side and portraying present ruined lives of gang members due to crime and drug addiction etc. “The success of our KidsPlay anti Gang and Drug Presentation is overwhelming. We are truly grateful to the parents, teachers and coaches, who took out the time to bring these youth to a powerful and impactful presentation. Words cannot express gratitude to the organizations which stood with KidsPlay in this collaborative venture”. The organisers believe, “Without the Odd Squad Productions Society, KidsPlay volunteers, CrossConnect Media, Sgt. Jet Sunner from the RCMP, Kaka Canadian, Mr. Thiara and the Surrey Board of Trade, this presentation would not have been possible”.

Blood donors are true heroes. Would you like to be one?

I

t is said that almost half of the population in a country will need blood at some time in their lives, yet less than 5% of the population donates. Disasters like car accidents, fires, and other trauma cases happen every day and these patients need blood, and rarely do they need only one pint. A bleeding trauma victim can run through 100 units of blood in no time. If all eligible donors would donate on a regular basis, four to six times a year, blood needs would be met and shortages could be a thing of the past. For men, there is a life-saving benefit to donating blood. Men are at higher risk for “hemochromatosis or iron overload” a potentially deadly problem where too much iron builds up in the blood. It can lead to heart disease and other major health problems. Research

shows if men give blood 3 times a year, they can reduce their iron overload and therefore their risk of a heart attack by as much as 50%! We believe, blood donors are true heroes. In fact, your one blood donation will be broken down into several components, enabling you, with just one donation, to save up to three lives! So, next time you hear about a blood donation camp, do not be afraid and make an effort to donate. You might become someone’s hero too!

Creamy Christmas Butter Cookies These are very simple cookies -- simple to make and simple to decorate. Just roll dough into balls, imprint each ball with a fork, and sprinkle with colored sugar. The result is an attractive, meltin-your-mouth delicious, perfect-for-Christmas cookie you’ll be proud to share with friends and family. These cookies are delicate and buttery. It’s easy to change the color of the sugars to fit any occasion, too!

Mini Christmas Pudding Treats A great little treat that looks like Christmas puddings. These little puddings are so quick and simple to prepare. They always disappear quickly. You can use orange juice or water with a little brandy essence if you do not wish to add the alcohol. Measurements are all approximations- the mixture should be moist enough to easily roll into small walnut sized balls. Use any purchased Christmas fruit cake-even home brand turns out OK. Any sized cake would do. You can add some extra diced glace cherries if you wish. Ingredients • 700g fruitcake, store purchased. I prefer a dark fruit cake • 1⁄4 cup brandy or 1⁄4 cup orange juice or 1⁄4 cup water, with some brandy essence added • 250g white chocolate, melted • 3 red decorative candies, use red snakes lollies • 5 green decorative candies, use green snake lollies DIRECTIONS 1. Crumble the fruitcake with your hands into a mixing bowl. 2. Stir in the brandy and mix thoroughly. Add enough of the brandy (or substitute) so that the mixture will easily roll into walnut sized balls. Roll into balls using your hands. 3. Place the rolled balls onto a lined baking tray. 4. Melt the chocolate and drizzle over the balls to represent the custard. Use a teaspoon and let the chocolate run down the sides of the little puddings. 5. Chop the snake lollies using scissors into small slices. Add two green and one red piece to the top of the puddings. Position the lolly pieces lose together, these become the holly atop of the puddings. 6. Refrigerate until the chocolate has set. Store in an airtight container and keep refrigerated.

Christmas Punch Ingredients

• • • •

2 quarts cranberry juice 2 quarts lemonade 2 quarts pineapple juice 2 quarts carbonated lemon-lime beverage or 2 quarts ginger ale (or less)

DIRECTIONS

1. Pour all of the juices together in a big punch bowl. 2. Add enough soda to give the punch a kick, but not so much that the flavor of the juices is diluted.

INGREDIENTS • 8ounces unsalted butter, softened (2 sticks) • 1 1⁄2cups confectioners’ sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 large egg • 2 1⁄4cups flour • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar • 1⁄4 teaspoon salt • Colored sanding sugar (red, green or color of choice) DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease 2 cookie sheets. 2. In a large bowl of an electric mixer at medium speed, mix butter, sugar and vanilla just until blended. 3. Add the egg and mix well. 4. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, soda, cream of tartar, and salt. Add to the butter mixture and mix at low speed until well combined. 5. Shape the dough into 3/4-inch balls. Arrange the balls 2-inches apart on the cookie sheets. Flatten each ball with a fork as you would a peanut butter cookie. Do this one time. To prevent the fork from sticking to the cookie dough;, dip it occasionally in confectioners’ sugar. Sprinkle tops of the cookies with colored sanding sugar. 6. Bake 8-10 minutes or until lightly colored around the edges. Let cookies cool on the cookie sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely

o you tire from climbing stairs while your dad hops along in front of you? An increasing number of young people are compromising heart health because of lifestyle choices that start in early childhood. A recent report from the British Heart Foundation found that 44 per cent of adults never exercise. The good news is it’s never too early or too late to start. Take their test to check whether you’re as fit as you should be for your age. TOI spoke to Dr Pratik Soni, cardiologist at Wockhardt Hospital to improve your fitness, whatever your age. 20s– You should be at your physical peak in your twenties - but, be warned, the ageing process kicks in at 25, as you start to lose muscle mass at up to 1 per cent a year. CHALLENGE: Bleep Test (Download the app on your cell phone) This involves running between two points, getting faster as you progress. The aim is to keep going for as long as possible.

Set two markers exactly 20 metres apart. Start the app and jog gently to the first marker, jog back when you hear the bleep, then back to the first marker, aiming to arrive at each marker in time for the bleep. The test starts comfortably slowly, but with each minute, the bleeps get closer together. When you can no longer reach the marker before you hear the bleep, stop and check your score.

AIM This is a crucial decade for building good exercise habits, muscle mass and bone density — which fall later in life. “Before the age of 20, heart problems are rare unless it’s a congenital defect,” says Dr Soni who has treated one patient aged 16. Patients in their twenties however, are on the rise. “This is due to lifestyle and food. Kids start to accumulate cholesterol at the age of seven and the effects are seen in early adulthood,” he says. Couple this with the fact that they don’t engage in any exercise and you are moving towards dangerous territory. Aim for 200 minutes of aerobic activity per week. It burns calories which controls other parameters like blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Good score Level 10-11 Bad score Level 5 (or less) 30s - For many women, this decade is dominated by pregnancy and young motherhood, and hormonal changes can throw up problems. However, men and women who are active could be at risk of over-use injuries in this decade. This includes damage to the cartilage which cushions the joints. CHALLENGE: Fun Run. Try To Run A Mile (1.6 Km)

www.lifestylesa.ca @saet.ca

A study by the Cooper Institute in Dallas, Texas, showed that the speed you can run a mile by the age of 40 could become a spooky prediction of your risk of heart disease years later. If you take longer than ten minutes (12 minutes for women), you have a 30 per cent greater risk of developing and dying from heart disease in 30 years’ time.

marching on the spot swinging your arms, then start a stopwatch and simply step up and down, one foot at a time, for three minutes. The only way to boost your metabolic rate is to prevent muscle depletion by strength training. This test seems simple, but it is a great measure of fitness, balance, agility and rhythm.

Keeping fit now means working harder than in your 20s. Take time to find a sport or activity you enjoy and which you can fit around the other demands on your time (cycle to work; book an exercise class three evenings a week). Make activity part of your life - stand instead of sitting, take stairs not lifts, never stand still on an escalator and pay attention to your posture. Speed up your mile: start by walking fast, break into jogging intervals as your fitness increases, then run when you can.

This is a challenging decade as most people are torn between the demands of young children and ageing parents. “Cut down on empty calories like colas and alcohol. Take a brisk walk for 15-30 minutes, four times a week. One year of regular exercise can cut your risk of health attack by 10 per cent which is significant,” says Dr Soni. It is important to integrate activity into every opportunity throughout the day to hold back the effects of ageing. Good score pulse should be less than 90 to 95 per minute for men and less than 95 to 100 for women Bad score breathlessness, inability to complete task

Good score 9 minutes for a woman, 8 for a man Bad score Over 12 min 40s - This is the decade of the triple whammy: hormonal decline, gravity pulling everything south and as the reduction in muscle mass accelerates, your metabolism slows - because muscle burns more fat as fuel. As a result, we put on weight. CHALLENGE: Step Test This is a stepup exercise - you will need a high step that’s 12 inches above the ground. Warm up for 10 minutes b y

Why is there a surge of children needing braces? Have you ever heard the following: Why do kids these days need braces, we never had any problems? Dr. Vishal Sharma, BSc, DDS, Cert. Ortho. FRCD(C), FCDS (BC)

Certified Specialist in Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics

T

his by far is the most common question that a parent asks during an orthodontic visit at Aura Orthodontics. It is usually followed by “If I have good teeth, what happened to my children?” Let me just preface this by saying the answer is not straight forward because there are several factors that determine how our teeth look and why braces are needed. The following will explain some of those different factors and the roles they play in answering this question. Let’s begin with the nature versus nurture debate. The nature part of this discussion is our genetics that we receive from our parents and the nurture part is the

environment that we are brought up in. For genetics, a large part of the way we look, including our teeth is determined by our parents – regardless of what the problem is if our parents had crooked teeth, an overbite, an underbite, spacing or crowding – then we will most likely have the same problem. If our parents don’t have any of these problems, then neither should we, right? Not necessarily… This is where the nurture part of the discussion comes into play. When I say environment, I don’t mean the trees, the land or the weather. I am talking about the factors that we expose our teeth to on a daily basis – the oral environment. For example, our dietary habits, which include sugary foods like candy and soda, our brushing habits, and fluoridated water to name a few of the important ones. In some areas of the world, people have fluoridated drinking water - which means fluoride is put into their water. At very low levels, fluoride has been proven to help prevent cavities. When we don’t

www.lifestylesa.ca /saet_ca @saet.ca

have fluoride in our water (like in Vancouver, Surrey, Delta or Abbotsford) – this preventative effect is not there. Additionally, many children these days are exposed to a diet high in refined sugar, with lots of sticky foods. These sticky sugars constantly ‘attack’ the baby teeth and create large cavities. This poor diet, in combination with poor brushing habits and low fluoridation can lead to large cavities, which then require big fillings or an early removal of baby teeth. Baby teeth are important for many reasons – one of which is holding space for our adult teeth. When baby teeth are lost early, the adult teeth lose their ‘guide’ and they erupt into the mouth in a variety of different positions. The bad news is that this is one of the main reasons we see crowding in our kids today – because of early loss of baby teeth. The good news is that this problem is easily prevented with less sugar and better brushing. When baby teeth are lost early – it is very important to see your orthodontist to maintain space for adult teeth. This is why at Aura Orthodontics, we recommend that a child’s first screening be completed by age seven. On another note, if you look back by 40 or 50 years – how many people had braces? The obvious answer is not that many. Next ask yourself, how many of your grandparents have dentures?–Is it accurate to say that probably quite a few. Braces do not necessarily prevent dentures. However, it has been proven that orthodontically straightened teeth have a much better chance of lasting a patient’s life. Straighter teeth have several benefits that allow us to maintain them for the long term. For example, they are easier to clean, which helps to prevent cavities. Additionally, straight teeth can help maintain bone support. If teeth are crooked, biting causes an unhealthy transfer of force to the bone. In fact, the teeth and bone have a very close relationship, similar to that of a fencepost and the ground. Imagine a fencepost in the ground. If you hit the fencepost on its side with a hammer ten times a day, eventually the fencepost will tilt over and fall. Also, the ground that was supporting the fencepost will be soft and become weakened. The same is true with crooked teeth - the

NOVEMBER 2015

treatment – is priceless. To be able to smile without fear of ridicule, to be able to express oneself and to feel confident is important for children and adults alike. With braces becoming more widely accepted, it is what makes transformations like this possible.

bone will become weakened after years of unhealthy forces and teeth can become loose. Oppositely, if you hit the fencepost on its top, it will not damage the post or the ground. The same is true for straight teeth when they transfer healthy forces to the bone.Overall, for this reason straighter teeth tend to last longer. Today, braces are far more socially accepted than they were in the past. Again, think back to 20 to 30 years ago and imagine how many people had braces. The fact is that it was not that common back then. With recent advances in technology, treatment is much easier – smaller braces, clear braces, Invisalign and other totally clear options. And as a result, braces are becoming more and more common. This is true for both children and adults. Additionally, more kids these days receive orthodontic treatment because it is becoming less socially acceptable to have crooked teeth. Unfortunately we see this all too often at Aura Orthodontics where a young child is ashamed to smile because of their teeth. It is sad but true that in schools, on playgrounds, in offices and social circles people are ridiculed for crooked teeth. Braces are simply becoming more accepted than crooked teeth because they are considered a pro-active approach to treating crooked teeth. This leads us to our last reason. As individuals, we all want to achieve our highest potential. Reaching this level requires hard work, determination, confidence and self-esteem. We must perceive ourselves positively if we are to attain this level of accomplishment. As I have seen in my patients, the transformation from low selfesteem and confidence to high self-esteem and confidence after

To summarize all the points that we discussed; we are seeing braces more often these days for the following seven reasons: 1. Poor diet and brushing habits can lead to an early loss of baby teeth. 2. Most families delay the first orthodontic consultation until a child is in their teens, which is far too late. The first orthodontic screening should be completed by no later than age seven. 3. Orthodontically straightened teeth are much easier to maintain and therefore remain longer in the mouth. Overall, this adds to the list of benefits and reasons why one should pursue orthodontic treatment. 4. Socially, braces are more widely accepted than ever before. So much so, that in some instances, having braces is more acceptable than having crooked teeth. 5. New technology has improved the appearance of braces (i.e. smaller, more aesthetic, clear treatment options). 6. Orthodontic treatment has a positive effect on confidence, self-esteem, and personality development. 7. Straighter teeth are more aesthetically pleasing.

“Food, in our own pure Indian tradition, is something very holy. It’s not about nutrients and calories. It’s about preparation. It’s about taste, quality and quantity”. By Surinder Shaun Kochhar

M

y Joy knows no bounds, as I came to know that a new restaurant captioned above has come up --for foodie’s denizens of Surrey and its hinterland -who have an ardent/ refined interest in Indian cuisine as a priority. As I was tearing down the road in my automobile to attend the opening ceremony on October 11, the name Sapphire - a precious gem -flashed into my mind. Wow, an entirely different name to tickle the taste buds of our community. As I approached the dim musical entrance with feeling of glowing generality, I found the 6600 sq. feet sprawling space pegged at 6500 plus sq. feet and what a scenic view. I was greeted by owner Directors and restaurateurs Mr Gurminder Beniwal and Mr Gurpreet Gary Sandhu. As I settled for a exploratory talk with both promoter Director co- owners, I found them cool, calm and composed though a little excited with eustress lurking through their body language, as their dream project see the light of the day. When asked what the USP [unique selling point] of this brand new restaurant is, Mr Beniwal hastened to add that “we serve quality and quantity at inexpensive price. Our motto is to sell more at a reasonable price with quality par excellence so as to

serve our community. Every week you will have new modified dishes to satisfy the taste buds and healthy too”. As I delved deep into the menu items to my pleasant surprise, they have very competitive prices and full range of vegan and non-vegan items viz., snacks, appetizers, main course [vegan/non vegan ], deserts, beverages and a Bar with 10 type of beers on the tap – a kind of first in the city. On staff front, the team of 25 is spearheaded by well experienced GM Mr. Prabhjot Sandhu. Being from hospitality and food and beverage industry, both the directors have a vivid vision of a recipe to dole out excellent customer service and Zaiqa of our community. A very roomy Banquet Hall for a party of 80 to 100 people capacity with utmost privacy is a treat to watch and feel all the stuff under one roof. More so it has a comfortable parking space and in the heart

of the city. This brand new bistro also has live singers, group band music, east Indian entertainment, DJ service and live sport matches to put the foodie at ease. Buffet is not their forte as the management feels food lacks freshness being heated and reheated till it is sold out or dispensed with. For an explorer of food a maiden visit to this brand new place is worth a visit, which entertains to the core. Also, as time progresses, an open air patio will be very tempting to enjoy fresh food in the basking in the glory of sun. I feel a recipe is only a theme, which an intelligent chef can play each time with a variation with customers and community in mind. Make a visit and check for yourself a place where taste matters, quantity is paramount and quality is excellent.

There are many women out there who wishes and fantasises of having that perfect 10/10 nails, which they can flaunt by wearing the latest and trendiest nail enamels or going for that latest nail art.

Brittle nails?

Here’s a perfect guide to rescue H

owever, brittle and weak nails can wash away your dreams of flaunting those picture perfect nails. In today’s busy schedule we might not always get time to go for those expensive manicures but there are certain home remedies which if practiced regularly can help you to keep those pretty nails strong and in shape. 1. Olive oil and lemon juice mixture: Take a teaspoon of olive oil and infuse it with few drops of lemon juice. Now take small portions of this mixture and apply it on your nails and massage it. Let it remain overnight and wear soft hand gloves after massage so that your nails aren’t exposed to water. Do this atleast twice a week for better results. 2. Coconut oil massage: Take few teaspoons of coconut oil and warm it a little. Apply the same on your nails and hands and gently massage it. Along with making your nails stronger it will also improve your

blood circulation while keeping your nails moistured. You can also mix warm coconut oil with few drops of lemon juice. Soak your nails in this mixture and then gently massage it. After massage wear gloves and keep them overnight for good results. 3. Sea Salt mixture: Not only will sea salt help strengthen brittle nails, it can also soften cuticles adding a dazzling shine to your nails. Mix tea tablespoons of fine grain sea salts in a small bowl of warm water and add two drops of wheat germ oil, frankincense oil and few drops of lemon oil. In this solution soak your nails for approx 10-15 minutes and rinse it off with warm water, now pat dry and apply a hand cream. Repeating this procedure thrice a week can give good results. 4. Keep them moisturized: Rub petroleum jelly or a moisturizer cream around your nails throughout the day. During nights

make sure that you wear thin cotton gloves after massaging with oil so that to get the maximum benefits of the same. Also you can wear vinyl gloves while doing dishes or laundry. Nail polish removers that contains high content of acetone or formaldehyde, as they do harm your nails, instead use acetatebased removers instead. 5. Proper Diet: Your diet and lifestyle has a lot to do with how strong or brittle your nails are. If your body isn’t getting enough protein, fats, vitamins and minerals then no amount of home remedies o manicures will be able to keep your nails strong. A healthy and balanced diet which contain vitamins A, C, D, E, as well as many B vitamins, and folic acid, zinc, iron, calcium and biotin can reduce your risk of brittle nails. Not only will your nails grow stronger, you can also see improvements in your skin, hair and will feel healthier from inside.

here are many reasons kids should play outside, from expressing creativity to running freely to making messes without worrying about dirtying the house. In addition to these fun reasons, there are also many health benefits that make outdoor play great for children. Here is an insight on the physical and mental health benefits of getting kids outside.

Improves Vision A study reported by Optometry and Vision Science found that children who spend time outside have better distance vision than those who primarily play indoors.

Promotes Social Skills Ross believes getting kids outside and having unstructured play promotes a wide range of skills. “On a playground not everyone gets to go down the slide first.

Going to a playground with your kids is not just about running around and being active, but it’s also about learning social skills, executive functions and behavioral skills as well through play.”

to rely on natural remedies. “Spending time outside playing is such a huge outlet for stress. It’s relaxing; it is healing.” There is even research showing that seeing green spaces can help decrease kids’ stress levels.”

Increases Attention Span

Provides Vitamin D

Huang notices the benefits of playing outside in her own kids: “The difference I see is both of my children have a high attention span comparatively speaking, and much more self-directed (they want to investigate things), where other kids might just sit back.” Studies have also shown that green outdoor settings appear to reduce ADHD symptoms in children. Exposure to natural settings through after-school and weekend activities may be widely effective in reducing attention deficit symptoms in children.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, lots of kids are suffering from vitamin D deficiencies. This vitamin has several health benefits, including preventing kids from future bone problems, diabetes and even heart disease. Vitamin D can be received by supplement, but you can also get it through its free and natural version: sunlight. Have your kids play outside for a few minutes without sun screen (which blocks cancer-causing rays, but also vitamin D). Then slather on the lotion. Of course, if your child burns easily, use the sunscreen and increase the vitamin D-heavy foods and supplements.

n ancient India the birth of a girl child was hailed as auspicious. An old Indian proverb lies down that a home without a daughter is like a body without soul. The coming of a daughter in the house was compared with the advent of Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth and Saraswati, the Goddess of fine arts. The usual blessing of a father at the time of his daughter’s marriage was: “May you excel in learning and public speaking”. No ceremony was considered complete without presence of women. The belief was that “No home is complete without a woman.” The situation, however drastically changed during the later years when India was subjected to frequently foreign invasions. The invaders brought along practices that made women suffer badly; infanticide and ‘Purdah’ became prevalent. Sending a girl to school became risky. There was, therefore, a sudden decline in female literacy and the position of women in society. The problem of female fetus is widespread in urban centers. With the help of new techniques it has become possible to determine the sex of the unborn baby or the fetus, and if it is found to be a girl child then, this is followed by abortion. Clinics offering such services have come up in many countries despite of being illegal. There are severing laws against the misuse of parental diagnostic techniques, which are meant only for detecting abnormalities in the unborn infant. The doctors, however, violate this law. Not a single case has been filed so far under the law, which forbids such an unethical practice. To day, the problem is quite widespread in the northern states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Rajastan. There are pockets of Tamil

The tribes, the Toda, The Kallar and the Gounder, earlier lived in war zones are facing torture of army solider. They started to kill the girl child in order to keep the population of women down and thus save them from rape by invading armies. In Rajasthan also, a girl child is looked upon as a curse because her father has to lie low before the father of boy at the time of match finding. Upon attaining puberty, a girl is considered to be a security risk, a likely source of trouble for the family’s honor and reputation. Then there are economic reasons for her killing. She is a liability for her parents from the cradle ceremony to the marriage. There has been not let up in the dowry system, which breaks the back of the parents. In some communities there is a dirty superstition that is a daughter is killed, the next child will be a son. In China also, the eldest male child inherits the property

look upon the male child as their protector and supporter in old age. This gender-bias leads to the killing of girl child. The greatest tragedy is that women themselves permit the death of their daughters as mercy killing. Imagine a world without women! Doesn’t it seem horrific? A world without women would be lacking of some serious talent. The stage for the New York City Ballet would be bare. Tennis rackets would just be lying on the court at the US Open. There would be less laughter, without actresses like Amy Poehler and Cameron Diaz. Imagine your home without your mother, sister and daughters; wouldn’t life be incomplete without them? Who would you marry your sons to if there were no girls? If you got the message, spread it as much as you can and make sure nothing as such is practiced around you.

Soon, you can pop a pill for workout D

rugs that mimic the benefits of exercise could soon become a reality, thanks to a breakthrough research which discovered around 1,000 molecular reactions to exercise. The research exposed that molecular changes occur in our muscles when we exercise, providing the world’s first comprehensive exercise blueprint. “Exercise is the most powerful therapy for many human diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and neurological disorders,” said David James, head of the research group. “However, for many people, exercise isn’t a viable treatment option. Thus the drug will become essential in these cases,” he added. The researchers analysed human skeletal muscle biopsies from four untrained, healthy males following 10 minutes of high intensity exercise. Using a technique known as mass spectrometry to study a process called protein phosphorylation, co-author Dr Benjamin Parker discovered that short, intensive exercise triggers more than 1,000 changes. Thus, any drug that mimics exercise will need to target multiple molecules and possibly even pathways. The majority of changes they discovered have not previously be en associated with exercise, with existing research focusing on just a small number of changes. “Exercise produces a complex, cascading set of responses within human muscle. It plays an essential role in controlling energy metabolism and insulin sensitivity ,” said co-author Dr Nolan Hoffman.”While scientists have long suspected that exercise causes a complicated series of changes to human muscle, this is the first time we have been able to map exactly what happens,” he added. With this long-term goal in mind, researchers narrowed down the therapeutic possibilities within the blueprint using mathematical and engineering-based analysis.
