Hola Mohalla: Punjab’s rich and colorful tradition
A
day assigned for mock battles for his troops by the 10th guru of Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh, has come to be the symbol of Punjab’s own rich religious and cultural tradition. The festival of ‘Hola Mohalla’, as it is known, takes place around Holi in the Sikh religious town of Anandpur Sahib. Hola Mohalla, celebrated a day after Holi, the Hindu festival of colours, has carved out its own unique place in Punjab’s and Sikh religion’s calendar. The festival made its beginning around 1701 as Guru Gobind Singh wanted his troops to have mock battles to keep them battle ready. Tens of thousands of Nihang Sikhs assemble in this town, home to Takht Keshgarh Sahib, the second holiest of Sikh shrines (after Harmandar Sahib or Golden Temple in Amritsar), every year to be part of the festival.

The shrine is famous as it was here that Guru Gobind Singh founded the ‘Khalsa Panth’, the modern day Sikh religion, in April 1699.
earlier used to be essentially mock combat based, these have gradually also turned into a politico-religious affair.
During the festivities, various sects (deras) of Nihangs go in a procession from the main gurdwara and pass through the holy town.
Leading political parties hold their political conferences before the main event. Millions of devout assemble at the shrine to offer prayers on the occasion.
The procession then culminates at a stadium where the Nihang Sikhs perform ‘Gatka’, a traditional form of martial art in which age-old weapons and equipment are used to showcase mock battles. “It is an amazing sight to see the Gatka performance. The festivity around the procession and the colourful atmosphere make it a great spectacle to watch,” travel writer and author Puneetinder Kaur Sidhu told in an interview.
“It is such an enriching and unique experience to be part of the Hola Mohalla. We have been bringing groups of foreigners from various countries since 2009 to see the event. “They are amazed at what is on display. The weaponry and colorful atmosphere are a thing to experience,” Harkirat Ahluwalia, who runs a tented luxury farm resort near Hoshiarpur, 75 km from here, told in an interview.
Ahluwalia even bought a group of 22 Germans for the Hola Mohalla in past few years. “The groups of Nihang Sikhs converge here on foot, on horse backs, elephants, trucks, tractortrolleys and other vehicles,” Sidhu said. “It is a spectacle.” In the buildup to the main event of Hola Mohalla, all roads and highways leading to Anandpur Sahib are choked with people being ferried on trucks, buses and other modes of transport. This year was no different — a virtual sea of humanity thronged Anandpur Sahib. By: Jaideep Sarin

AVOID THESE MISTAKES WHILE INVESTING FOR YOUR CHILD Sandeep Ahuja
W
e, as parents remain concerned about the bright future of our children, and we want to ensure that they receive the best education. To fulfil our dreams for our children, it’s vital that we invest for them wisely, and should avoid certain mistakes as discussed below:
Delaying the investment RESP is a great investment opportunity which enables you to save for the education of your child. It would be better if without any delay, you start investing early as it will give your investment the maximum time to grow.
Improper utilization of the available grant funds We are indeed lucky to be in the wonderful nation Canada where the government understands the importance of healthy growth of children, and it generously supports parents in this endeavour by providing them a tax-free Universal child care benefit. The maximum Canada child benefit you could get is $6,765 per year for children under 6, and $5,708 per year for children aged 6 to 17. Your Canada child benefit is based on your family income from the previous year, the number of children in your care, and the age of your children (source: Government of Canada, Jan. 27, 2020). Parents can very effectively utilize this financial benefit by investing it in RESP. To further support parents in this savings initiative, for an annual deposit of $2500 in their child’s RESP, the government of Canada deposits $500 into this RESP account with a lifetime maximum limit of $7200. Besides, it provides catch-up provisions to parents who are unable to deposit the maximum amount in any given year. Along with that, an additional amount of CESG is available for eligible children from middleand low-income families. You need to utilize these grants for maximum permissible benefit.

investments may carry similar risk and expected return, but one may have higher fees – all else being equal, the fees would affect your returns.
prenticeships). An added advantage is- the capital that you have contributed (not the grants or the money made from the grants) can be used for any purpose as per your need.
Lack of understanding about how an investment works
Not making optimum use of RESP as an investment account
Before you make any decision, it is very important to do a thorough research about available investments as it ensures that you: 4understand the risks associated with the investment, including the potential losses or returns; 4consider how it fits in your existing portfolio; and, 4know the amount of fees/ any penalties for early withdrawal that you will pay
It is a proven fact that among the asset classes, equities provide the highest long-term rate of return. An early investment into an RESP will let your stocks grow for 18 years or more.
It is evident that a wisely decided appropriate amount of investment for your child’s post-secondary education will ensure the growth of funds in the best possible manner, which will be readily available when you need them for the intended purpose.
Avoiding shopping around for an advisor As a first time investor, we feel inclined to approach the same advisor who is being consulted by our parents, friends or relatives. But here, it is important to understand that the advisor that’s right for someone else may not be right for you. You need to choose the advisor as per your needs, the type of clients he/she works with and how involved you want to be in your investing decisions.
Improper Attention to Fees You need to understand the fees you pay when you invest as they reduce your return. Before making an investment, ask questions and evaluate the available options. For instance, two
Irregular monitoring of your account statements To show the activity in your account and provide an update on your investments, your financial institution sends you monthly or quarterly account statements via mail or makes them available online. It’s essential that you examine your statements to confirm: 4That the investments that you have bought and sold are correct. 4The fees and commissions charged on the investment are correct. 4The amount of gain/loss of your investments. If you find anything unclear/incorrect, contact your financial representative immediately.
Lack of information about the ways you can utilize RESP funds You may use the RESP funds for any reasonable post-secondary education expense of your child in Canada as well as out of country (including ap-

oli, the vibrant spring festival, falls in the month of March. People across the country start looking forward to Holi weeks ahead. This year, the pandemic is a huge spoilsport as there are Covid-related restrictions on big gatherings. It is best to follow the restrictions and be safe. Holi can be memorable with family members at home too. You can cook Holi goodies together, have a Holi quiz and games and hold a Holi poster or rangoli fest with colours. It’s not necessary to go to large gatherings; for a change think how a virtual Holi party will look like.

Holi has a slightly different flavour in the eastern part of the country. While in West Bengal, it’s called Dol Purnima, Doljatra or Basant Utsav, in Assam people often call it Phakuwa or Doul. The people of Odisha celebrate Dola on Holi and Lord Jagannath with Lord Balabharda and Goddess Subhadra
In Uttarakhand, the Kumaoni Holi is a grand and colourful musical affair. People sing local Holi songs and folklore. Down south, in Tamil Nadu people celebrate Panguni Uthiram - a festival of love - on Holi. Holi is called Ukkuli in Konkani and is also referred to as the spring festival - Sigmo. Holi is all about colour, merrymaking, mouthwatering signature delicacies. The most symbolic Holi sweet is ‘Gujiya’, believed to have originated in Rajasthan. Gujiyas are sweet dumplings made of flour and filled with khoya and dry fruits. Malpuas, Dal Kachori and dahi Vada are also Holi specialities and Holi is incomplete without the famous Thandai. Here are some places in India that are famous for their iconic Holi celebrations. All the natives of the area of Vrindavan, Mathura, Nandgoan, and Barsana come together to celebrate Holi with Lathis (Sticks) and colors made up of Kesudo and Palash flowers. As per tradition, Gopalas (men) of Barsana try to invade Nandgaon to play Holi with Gopis (women). People from all over the world come for Lathmar Holi in Mathura every year. 2. Dola - Odisha Dola Holi is celebrated in the coastal region of Odisha province of India. day of Lamda in Manipur province of India. This lasts for six days. The entire valley is covered in festive colors during those days. The youth takes part in this by constructing bamboo huts on the roadside called ‘Yaosang’. An idol of Lord Chaitanya is placed in the hut by a Brahmin (Devotee). Puja is offered and bhajans and kirtans are chanted. On the last day, the idols are removed and the hut is set on fire with the chanting of ‘Hari Bola’ and ‘He Hari’. The Holi is played in the Govindjee temple, colors are mixed in the wells and then sprayed on the people who dance in the beats of the devotional songs in praise of Lord Krishna. 5. hola mohalla - Punjab As we go further up north to Sadda Punjab, an interesting fact comes up. Holi here is actually known as Holla Mohalla here. It is celebrated a day after Holi and is, in fact, a celebration commemorating the bravery of
Sikh Warriors. The celebrations are characteristic of a particular sect, known as the Nihang Sikhs. The festivities include an extensive display of traditional martial arts which is later followed by music and dancing.
Follow these Covid-19 guidelines to play safe Holi. 4 Wear a face mask during Holi celebrations. 4 Make sure no one with signs of cold or fever is involved in the celebration. 4 Avoid large gatherings and play with a small group of people. 4 Avoid the use of watercolours and play with dry colours only. 4 Maintain social distancing, avoid handshakes and hugging. 4 It is advised that children and adults should completely avoid Holi celebrations. 4 Don’t eat anything until you take a shower.

Set yourself on the path of selfimprovement Time management is a subject that is extremely important for us to understand. It’s all about putting in the effort which very few people do. An important aspect of time management is energy management. Managing your energy levels is just as important as your time for fruitful work and outcomes. At times, we may have the time but no motivation or will to make things happen. Understanding your body and the importance of rest and rejuvenation is crucial.
W
The Four Aspects of Energy Management: Energy must be managed at four planes
hile it needs the commitment to develop healthy habits as an adult, for young students and children, starting early can also mean transitioning into adults who are aware. Irrespective, there are a few tips that have been foolproof and have benefited everyone alike. For those who are looking at building a healthier tomorrow, you are already on the right path. Put them into action and watch how you set yourself on the path of selfimprovement. Time Management: Prioritising your work to manage time effectively: One way to keep a tab on how one keeps a watch on time is first identifying the priority tasks. One must prioritise goals that revolve around personal leadership and necessity and these could encompass: Personal Leadership 4Health 4Relationships 4Skill building 4 Identifying new opportunities 4Necessity 4Project Deadlines 4 Addressing issues of an angry client 4Resolving a machine breakdown 4or other emergencies While most of these must be on our top to-do list, people are easily distracted by social media, excessive TV viewing, and aimless internet surfing besides workplace chatter, spending too much time on emails or phone calls. The distractions pretty much sum up the waste of time and deception into doing one’s task less efficiently.
10
MARCH 2022
Physical energy: Physical depletion of energy can be taken care of by tiny breaks every 90 minutes -- light exercise such as walking or going a floor up through stairs and taking plenty of water. One can also get rid of drowsiness through little activities as these. Remember to avoid smoking and junk food and keep heavy exercise for nonworking hours routine.
Time Management Tools: Single Handling: It involves sticking to one task until it is 100 per cent complete without switching tasks in between. One must first make a list of things one needs to do, then apply the popular Covey’s matrix to understand its priority before embarking on the task with singleminded devotion. Always deal with the toughest task first. If you are suddenly reminded of a task that you think needs to be done for the same time, put it down on paper at once. But get back to it only once you complete what you already began working on. Don’t let yourself slip in between. The Pomodoro Technique: One of the most popular techniques to manage time and work efficiently is the Pomodoro technique. All one needs to do is create chunks of the tasks one intends to do while allotting a fixed time limit e.g. 25 minutes for a task. Get rid of any distractions from your surroundings and work honestly through a fixed schedule. Repeat the cycle to hop on to the next task or to complete the existing task.
Deep Work: It is a rare skill today to be deeply focused on anything. To work with total dedication and attention requires that you concentrate on your tasks like a zen master or a monk! While it is true that deep concentration helps navigate time efficiently, it is also highly rewarding when you can wind up your tasks within the given timelines productively. II. Energy Management Tools: Understanding one’s energy level patterns: Different people have different energy levels during the day. Some are early risers and feel motivated to work as soon as they are up and about. Others are late starters. Irrespective of what time one starts the day, it is certain that time progresses, one slows down hour by hour, picking up a little post-lunch and diminishing the energy levels again by the closing hours. One needs to identify the times of the day one is most productive and tap those hours effectively. It may also be a good idea to little breaks to recharge one’s batteries.
Emotional energy: Positivity is the key. Thinking about bad memories only makes energy levels shallow. But talking to well-wishers and loved ones, planning for the weekend, and keeping a track of your goals chart for the coming week can keep your motivation and emotional levels high. Mental energy: Positive affirmations, unwinding with favourite music, and taking short naps can help you keep your mental energies up. Stay away from watching movies or a match as it is time-taking and must be reserved for your free time. Spiritual energy: Yoga leads to holistic well-being. Tap into your energies through the practice of yoga, read a good book, above all take a few minutes to pray. All these help in keeping your spiritual energies high. Successful people are known to plan things ahead of time and that also includes watching their time schedule and energy levels. Certain things might not remain within the given agenda, yet one can stay on top of the game by following these little tips for time and energy management. By: Faheem Sait

Minimal skincare for men
W
hen it comes to skincare, most men prefer to keep things as simple as possible. Men, on the other hand, are becoming more interested in self-care as time passes. Some simple changes are recommended that aren’t taxing and produce long-term results. Men’s skin is typically oily and hard, and it is constantly exposed to external factors such as pollution and sunlight. It also faces difficulties as a result of poor sleep habits, stress, and a poor diet. Oily, dry, normal, sensitive, or combination skin all necessitate a unique set of products to address your concerns. Cleansing
This is the most important requirement for combating pollution and oil leakage. The first step of the day is to cleanse your face with a cleanser. It’s also simple to understand. Simply washing your face with a cleanser twice a day, once in the morning and once at night, helps to remove impurities. Choosing the right cleanser for your skin type will assist you in unclogging your pores and preventing acne. AHA-BHA facewash is recommended for oily skin.

Sunscreen should be used as part of every morning skincare routine before going outside. It is the final
step in skincare. Non-sticky gel-based sunscreens should be suitable for daily use.The most important thing to remember here is that sunscreen should be applied even if we aren’t going outside because it protects us from the UV rays emitted by our screens. If you are constantly exposed to the sun, you should apply sunscreen every three hours. Men can also use an anti-oxidant serum or a pigmentation serum to address their concerns if they are constantly exposed to pollution,
smoke, and so on. This should be done either before or after hydration, depending on the serum’s consistency. It is recommended that a serum with a thinner consistency be used first. Aside from that, men should use a non-sticky, noncomedogenic moisturiser before applying sunscreen. Always be aware of your skin type and make purchases accordingly. The same steps can be followed, but the products will differ. By: IANSlife

In this month’s article, we will be discussing a common condition found in canines, known as “Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome”. In simple terms, one can refer to this condition as Dog Dementia as well. Yes, this is similar to the condition that we can see in humans, as they also age with time.
a mild state; however, they will progress with time and unfortunately worsen and become more severe. This process is known as ‘Cognitive Decline’. The signs of this condition are anxiety, restlessness, not wishing to play
anymore, slow to learn new training, disorientation, decreased grooming, confusion, forgetting previous training, no control over urinating or defecating, sleep patterns altered, decreased appetite, excessive licking, frustration and barking. According to statistics, it is seen that at least one out of every three dogs that are over the age of ten will display at least one sign of Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome. If you feel that your dog may be showing any of these signs, then your veterinarian can perform a full physical examination. He or she will also need a full history of when the symptom(s) initially presented themselves, in order to conduct a proper diagnosis of this condition. Other diagnostic measures may also be performed in order to rule out any other underlying causes for such exhibiting signs. Canines that are diagnosed with Dog Dementia will then begin a long-term treatment of supportive care for this condition. Such care will consist of improving your dog’s living environment and health in order to maintain an ideal condition for improvement. This will allow the Cognitive Decline to be delayed

and not progress as quickly otherwise. Changes in exercise routine, playing time and also training, or needing to train again, will be introduced as well. Other adjustments that can be made to facilitate a dog with this condition is to provide night lights for your canine companion to navigate throughout the house easier in the dark. Place training pads near your dog so that there is a place for him or her to use the washroom in case of an emergency, where they cannot control their urination or bowel movement. Certain medications or behavioural treatments may also be advised by your veterinarian based on the individual case of your pet. Diet is also a key component to managing a better lifestyle. Certain supplements can also be added to the diet regiment in order to help with your dog’s cognitive function. Such as: Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Selenium, Beta Carotene, Carotenoids, Flavonoids, Omega-3 and Carnitine. Follow-up appointments with your veterinarian may be needed regularly.

It’s all in the eyes
W
hen it comes to cosmetics, a dramatic eye is a game changer. We’ve seen a lot of shifts in trends over the last few years, from plain natural look to heavy glam. We’ll look at a few different ways to draw attention to your eyes and take your makeup to the next level. Eyes have a lot of power, and when emphasized correctly, they may draw attention to the rest of your face. Tips shared by Nupur Gupta, Founder, CEO and master trainer at the Nupur Gupta Academy. Graphic liners In their daily makeup routines, most people opt for a classic winged eyeliner. You can, however, go for a graphic liner if you want to liven things up. Even though graphic liners have just lately become fashionable, they are sure to make you stand out. You can go with the conventional black or go all out with colourful combos, as many celebrities do these days. There are a lot of various methods to get this look, which makes it even more enjoyable! Smokey
The ideal smokey eye makeup screams big and dramatic more than anything else. It entails mixing dark eyeshadow and giving it a diffused appearance. A smokey eye can be achieved in a variety of methods, including blending the eyeshadow only at the end or all over the eyelid. This look essentially draws attention to and accentuates your eyes, making them the most crucial feature of the complete makeup look. Multicolour If you want to look forceful, a multicoloured eyeshadow or liner might also help. Bold eyes are commonly associated with dark colours, although this is not the case. Using brightly coloured eyeliners, such as blue, purple, or white, can give your makeup a distinct look. Colors like pink, orange, and yellow can be used in bright eyeshadow

Who doesn’t enjoy a little glitz and glam? Glitters are the easiest way to amp up any makeup look without putting in a lot of effort or thinking. You may use either loose glitter or sparkly eyeshadow for this look. The first option will give you the most sparkly look, while the second option is perfect if you’re in a hurry and don’t want to make a mess. In any case, you’ll look tough and glamorous in no time with this style. Stickers Stickers, like graphic liners, are a relatively new trend. Many makeup firms, such as Simi haze beauty, have recently released makeup stickers. These generally consist of eyeliners in various forms and colours that look dramatic and make you stick out a lot. These are a terrific way to think outside the box and try new things. These eyeliner stickers come in a variety of colours, from vivid

Travel in 2022 will be different. Especially after the ongoing third wave of the pandemic. Priorities will be re-defined as there are unique travel sentiments that are emerging.
Emerging unique tr
T
he travel and tourism industry across the world has shown a positive sign of recovery from the effects of the second wave, and more people are looking at 2022 as the year of travel and experience. Based on a strong vaccination drive, travellers who could not travel to their preferred destinations last year are now looking to revive that travel sentiment. This new mindset that travellers need to adopt has also changed the way we travel. Here are a few emerging travel trends that are set to dominate in 2022. Wellness Travel The pandemic has made more people realize the importance of self-care and their well-being. Travellers looking to partake in their next adventure are realizing the importance of managing their wellbeing, even amid their travels. Travellers have been showing a preference for places that help them get away from their routine lives, and are choosing destinations that offer good wellness programs and benefits. Travellers looking to
rejuvenate their mind and body have no shortage of beautiful destinations to pick from, not only the international destinations but within the country as well. Destinations like Kerala, Uttarakhand and Switzerland will emerge as some of the most preferred places for those who are looking to relax, rejuvenate and calm their senses. Sustainable Travel In 2022, we can expect to see a revival of the sustainable travel industry with more travellers opting to visit places that are known for being sustainable, and which have a minimal impact on the environment. Sustainable travel entails not partaking in activities that harm the environment and culture of local people. Many countries are also undertaking measures to reduce the carbon footprint in the
travel industry and support local businesses and people as well. Eco-Tourism is another branch of sustainable travel through which tourists visit destinations that are built around the eco-systems that they are present in, all while doing as minimal damage to the environment as possible. As a part of this, there are also people looking for tourist experiences that offer more meaningful and mutually beneficial experiences. This can include rebuilding rural communities and taking part in impactful conservation efforts. Leisure Travel For nearly 2 years, travel limitations and work from home culture has caused travellers to have to restrict themselves in terms of the places that they wanted to visit. While the world is still reeling from the impact of the pandemic, travellers want to take
a step back, relax and embrace the experiences that they missed out on. While the primary motivation for leisure travel is to break away from the monotony of everyday life, travellers are looking at this kind of travel to engage in new experiences and to visit tourist attractions that have been growing in popularity, even if the destinations are closer to home and places they might have visited in the past. Once in a Lifetime Travel Travellers all over the world realize that the future is uncertain, and lockdowns can be imposed at any moment given the present scenario. This has caused a change in the mindset of tourists who believe that they should focus on the now instead of the distant future. Travellers have been looking to visit places that they have dreamed about and are making plans that they were unable to fulfil over the course of the last two years. Travellers are now significantly more comfortable in spending more on travel and stay options than they were before, thereby making the idea of a ‘once in a lifetime’ travel extremely popular. Tech-driven Travel The pandemic gave a boost to tech integration in the travel industry, which is why it is no surprise that this is a trend that we expect, will surface in 2022. Hotels across the world are already using smart technology and this is only expected to grow as more hotels realize the importance of integrating

technology into their hotels, for their visitors. Right from keyless doors, VR tours and QR code-driven menus to robot housekeeping and voicecontrolled rooms, the hospitality
industry is set to completely change in the coming year. Many destinations are also now offering virtual reality tours of their destinations to give travellers a glimpse of what they have to
offer. This can give travellers an idea of what they will expect when visiting these destinations, and can also help travellers who are undecided on which places to visit in 2022.
are likely to showcase what travel is like in a post-pandemic era and are probably here to stay for the next few years. However, it is imperative to follow all safety precautions while travelling..

Things to consider before planning a journey with pets
P
ets perfectly encapsulate the notion of unconditional love. They provide us affection, instill a sense of responsibility in us, and are the most powerful stress buster. Nothing could ever match their pure sensation of sincerity. They are an intrinsic part of our life. Even the thought of leaving our most vulnerable family member at home is unsettling. Then why leave your pets at home? So, think about bringing your furry companion wherever you go. Even if it may appear to be a difficult task, having a great vacation with your four-legged companion is still manageable if you follow a few guidelines shared by Faisal Islam, Cofounder, Carry My Pet. Consult with the vet before planning a trip
As a pet owner, it is your responsibility to speak with your veterinarian before taking your pet on a trip. Whether it’s a veterinarian for a health and medical check-up or an international pet relocation expert for the documentation process, it is a good idea to consult them before you start planning your trip. Based on their examination, they can tell you whether your pet is fit for travel or should be left at home. Depending on your location, even a healthy pet may need additional vaccines or a health certificate before you go. Don’t forget to carry your pet’s medical documents Every airline has its own pet-travel policies, and each country has its own pet-health regulations. So make sure you get your pet’s medical records from the vet before embarking on a journey with your pet. You’ll need copies of an animal’s medical documents and certificates, as well as proof of vaccinations

(particularly rabies) if you’re moving it to another state. Prepare the pet for the journey The pets experience anxiety in the same way that humans do. It is vital to acclimate your pet to the voyage before beginning a journey to avoid putting your pet in an unpleasant scenario. You can quickly assist your pets in overcoming their concerns by gradually exposing them to new situations. Take him on a short drive once or twice a week to help him with this. This will assist you in understanding their behaviour and keeping track of what causes them to fidget so you can work around it. Don’t forget to update the pet’s microchip If we look from the safety point of our litter critters, they must have a microchip on them when travelling abroad. If you’re going
on a trip with your pet, make sure you don’t forget to get your pet microchipped. Pet microchip comes with a unique code and has pet’s basic information like breed, age, colour, owners details. It helps government authorities confirm with the microchip number mentioned in the microchip certificate whether it is the same pet for whom the documents were filed or not. Choose a comfortable carrier Each airline has its own set of regulations for transporting a pet. However, as a pet parent, it is your responsibility to select the suitable crate size for your pet and ensure that the cage is provided with proper food and water arrangements, an absorbing carpet, and a few toys to keep your pets entertained. There are some airlines that allow small dogs and cats to travel in soft carriers in the cabin, while
others insist that all pets be transported in the cargo hold. It is your responsibility to check the rules and regulations in advance to avoid causing any discomfort to your pets. Avoid feeding your pet right before travelling Flying can sometimes make your pets feel uncomfortable. So make sure you don’t feed your pet any solid food a few hours before your trip, or try to keep them lightly fed. If you’re travelling, make sure to arrange ahead of time for your pet’s meals to avoid any unpleasant surprises along the way. Just like you, your pets are entitled to a break. Travelling with a pet, on the other hand, necessitates considerable forethought. However, if you have all of your cards in order, you and your furry companion can have a lovely vacation. By:IANSlife

Because they keep the body warm from within, hot beverages are synonymous with winter. Wearing your cosiest woollens and sipping a steaming hot beverage on a bright and sunny day is the order of the day this season. Spices such as cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, nutmeg, saffron and ginger warm the body while also increasing metabolism and immunity. Three of the most well-known spiced teas that should not be overlooked in the winter are: Masala chai, also known as “chai tea”, is a popular spiced beverage. It was her very brave decision. I prayed to god in my mind and signed the papers. Mom-inlaw asked me to call Sam. My heart, all of a sudden, began beating very fast. I called Sam at the number given on his company card. I told him that Baljit’s mom wanted to see him. Sam invited us to see him at his house. His house was near Laxmi Narayan mandir and Ramgarhia Sikh temple on 140th street and 83rd avenue of Surrey. Mom-in-law proposed to meet at Laxmi Narayan mandir because she knew some of her relatives almost daily visited the Sikh temple. She didn’t want them to see us meeting Sam. She also proposed that after everything is settled, we could visit Sam’s house. She wanted to make sure that Sam had his own house and he was speaking the truth.

I called India and told my dad everything. First, dad didn’t understand anything. Then he advised me that I should do as my parents-in-law say. Well, we reached the mandir, paid our obeisance and sat on one side. A pandit was telling a holy story. “Sudhama hadn’t got any food in alms today. He was very sad. His hungry family was waiting for food to be brought by him in alms. Laxmi Ma, the goddess of wealth, couldn’t tolerate his miserable condition. She requested Lord Vishnu to help Sudhama. He told Laxmi Ma that nobody could get anything before time and more than one’s luck. But Laxmi Ma didn’t feel satisfied from this reply. She appeared before Sudhama incognito with a bowl full of rice pudding. Sudhama was very happy to get that. He was in fact so excited that he rushed home in haste resulting in a fall on the
ground. The rice pudding also spilled on the muddy path. A dog came running to lick that. He and his family had to sleep hungry again that night. Praise Lord Karishana!”, and the pandit concluded the holy tale. We took Prasad and came down to the langar hall. Sam also followed us and sat across our table. Mom-in-law was talking to Sam but my mind was stuck at the line that nobody could get anything before time and more than one’s luck. When mom felt satisfied with what Sam told her, she told him frankly my whole story. Sam felt sorry for all I had gone through. Continued in next edition

reminiscing Melody legend Lata Mangeshkar’s musical journey On a cold Sunday morning, India awoke to the heartbreaking news that the “Nightingale of India” and legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar passed away. On December 29, 1929, in the home of musician Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, a daughter named Hema Mangeshkar was born. Five years later, her name was changed to Lata.
P
andit Deenanath Mangeshkar was a Marathi performer, and Lata appeared in his musical plays as an actress. The family surname was changed from Hardikar to Mangeshkar in order to identify with their birthplace, Mangeshi in Goa. Lata Mangeshkar was the eldest of the Mangeshkar siblings, which included sisters Meena Khadikar, Asha Bhosle, and Usha Mangeshkar, as well as brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar. Each sibling is a well-known artist, and have left their mark on the country with memorable gems.
Lata plays an important and sweet role in her siblings’ lives. When Lata was 13 years old, the family’s sole breadwinner, her father, died, and Lata, as the eldest had to begin working. Lata Mangeshkar went on to create an illustrious career which spanned over six decades and thousands of songs. The veteran singer sang melodies in over thirty-six Indian and foreign languages, with a focus on Hindi and Marathi. She is known as the Nightingale of Bollywood and was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 2001, making her the second vocalist to receive this honour after M. S. Subbulakshmi. She was named the Nightingale
of India and the Nation’s Daughter, receiving numerous awards and accolades throughout her career. She travelled a long road, from her family life to her love life. According to reports, Lata Mangeshkar was in love with Maharaja Raj Singh of the Dungarpur royal state, her brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar’s best friend. Raj was once invited to tea at Lata’s house after playing cricket. This is Raj
Singh’s first meeting with Lata, and they quickly became friends. Raj used to call her “Mithoo” because he adored her. He always carried a tape recorder in his pocket, on which he recorded Lata’s songs. Lata and Raj were in love. Raj is said to have promised his parents he would not marry a non-royal, and so

5 ways to practice self-love
When you hear the term “self-love”, images of sheet masks or spontaneous road trips in films and spa days come to mind. However, self-love is more than this. It can take different forms for each of us. A rigorous pilates workout can be as relaxing as a spa treatment. Self-love entails accepting your true self -- with all of the flaws and imperfections that make you unique as an individual. Smytten lists down five ideas to kick-start your self-love journey! Clean and organise: There is nothing better than getting something done first thing in the morning. Starting your day with a win can instantly boost your mood and self-esteem. You will end up getting more done than usual as a subconscious attempt to replicate that feeling. Devoting some time to organising your room can also significantly aid in the decluttering of your thoughts. Meditate: Meditating allows you to quiet your mind and refocus your attention on the present moment. While there are numerous approaches, here’s one you can try: spend at least three minutes doing a slow, breathwork meditation that focuses on your inner strengths. Finally, express your gratitude for a fully functional body. And, while it may seem counterintuitive, complimenting yourself aloud can be a game-changer! Experiment with self-care: The internet is flooded with self-care

tips that can confuse a reader to the point of doing nothing. This is where experimentation comes into play! Find what works for you, whether it’s the viral Moroccan Argan Oil Facial Kit or
taking a bubble bath. Although it may appear time-consuming and tedious, trying something new is always rewarding. At the end of the day, when you find the perfect match, it will all be worth it!
Maintain a journal: Write as if you were writing to a friend. Document your dreams, goals, dilemmas, or even a single day in your life. Simply put, allow your thoughts to flow. Proactively writing allows you to set intentions that lead to positive thoughts, self-image and overall happiness. Buy yourself flowers: Break the stereotype of waiting for someone else to present you with flowers by representing a tangible form of love. Shower yourself with fragrance and love by selecting the right flowers and bringing freshness to your home or office. Alternatively, you could treat yourself to the ideal floral perfume -- the choice is entirely yours! Finally, choose to love yourself on a daily basis. It’s simple: hydrate, eat at least three meals a day, get eight hours of sleep, limit screen time and avoid activities that are harmful to your physical and mental health. By:IANSlife

Engage your toddlers indoor
K
eeping a toddler busy indoors can be difficult, as they are at an age where they would like to run, explore and be free! Even after spending a fair share of time in the park, kids persist to spend more and more time outside. While parents try their best to entertain them, at times it gets challenging for them to engage their toddlers at home. Here are some innovative tips from young parents and paediatricians on how to engage your toddlers indoors:
Sonal Sneha, mother of a super active three-year-old girl said: “Managing work and household work alongside my daughter was getting a bit tedious as I was not able to play with her all the time. It’s when my husband and I decided to bring a pup, Maggie, into her life. Now, all my daughter wants is Maggie’s company, where she spends most of the day laying around with our pup on the floor playing all sorts of games with her. As both of them spend so much time on the floor, we make sure that it is cleaned with a herbal product like ITC’s Nimyle.” Dr Kalaiarasi K, a paediatrician says balancing games can be great for younger kids and toddlers and helps them improve motor skills and their balance. “Young parents can

stick different coloured tapes on the floor, where the child has to balance himself/herself and walk only on the tape. If he falls off the tape, he’ll be out of the game. You can have different rules to walk on to make it more fun and interesting. For example, you can ask the kid to walk on one leg on the red coloured tape and walk fast on the green. Parents and caretakers can also encourage children to help them in watering indoor plants as well as helping in small household chores such as bringing the clothespin while drying the clothes on a line.”
Alka Srivastava, mother of two said: “My younger one is 9 months old and at this stage, kids learn to recognise themselves in pictures or mirrors. Securely set up a mirror on the floor and let your child explore his or her face. Ask ‘Where’re your eyes?’ or ‘Can you lift your arm?’ or ‘Crawl towards the mirror to touch your reflection’ etc. My elder one turned four, so we have to play a little more challenging game with him. “So, whenever I am on a video call with a relative or friend, I
introduce him and later show him different pictures, videos and ask him to identify them and different questions like ‘what is your relation with him/her’, ‘Find grandma in the album’, or ‘when did you last meet them’. I also encourage my kids to play together, where I just place some jigsaw puzzles on the floor or create easy huddles on the living room floor for them to cross together. These games also help in creating a bond between them.” Source: IANS

all you need to know about SEASONAL ALLERGIES Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji
MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC
Allergies occur when your immune system reacts to a foreign substance — such as pollen, bee venom or pet dander — or a food that doesn’t cause a reaction in most people. Spring means flower buds and blooming trees — and if you’re one of the millions of people who have seasonal allergies, it also means sneezing, congestion, a runny nose and other bothersome symptoms. Seasonal allergies — also called hay fever and allergic rhinitis — can make you miserable. Symptoms Allergy symptoms, which depend on the substance involved, can affect your airways, sinuses and nasal passages, skin, and digestive system. Allergic reactions can range from mild to severe. In some severe cases, allergies can trigger a life-threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis. Hay fever, also called allergic rhinitis, can cause: 4Sneezing 4 Itching of the nose, eyes or roof of the mouth 4Runny, stuffy nose 4 Watery, red or swollen eyes (conjunctivitis Risk factors You might be more likely to develop an allergy if you: 4 Have a family history of asthma or allergies, such as hay fever, hives or eczema 4 Are a child 4 Have asthma or another allergic condition Diagnosis To evaluate whether you have an allergy, your doctor will likely: 4 Ask detailed questions about signs and symptoms 4 Perform a physical exam 4 Have you keep a detailed diary of symptoms and possible triggers 4 Skin test: A doctor or nurse will prick your skin and expose you to small amounts of the proteins found in potential allergens.
34
MARCH 2022
If you’re allergic, you’ll likely develop a raised bump (hive) at the test location on your skin. 4 Blood test: Specific IgE (sIgE) blood testing, commonly called radioallergosorbent test (RAST) or ImmunoCAP testing, measures the amount of allergy-causing antibodies in your bloodstream, known as immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies. A blood sample is sent to a medical laboratory, where it can be tested for evidence of sensitivity to possible allergens. Reduce your exposure to allergy triggers To reduce your exposure to the things that trigger your allergy signs and symptoms (allergens): 4 Stay indoors on dry, windy days. The best time to go outside is after a good rain, which helps clear pollen from the air. 4 Delegate lawn mowing, weed pulling and other gardening chores that stir up allergens. 4 Remove clothes you’ve worn outside and shower to rinse pollen from your skin and hair. 4 Don’t hang laundry outside — pollen can stick to sheets and towels. 4 Wear a pollen mask if you do outside chores. Take extra steps when pollen counts are high Seasonal allergy signs and symptoms can flare up when there’s a lot of pollen in the air. These steps can help you reduce your exposure: 4 Check your local TV or radio station, your local newspaper, or the Internet for pollen forecasts
and current pollen levels. 4 If high pollen counts are forecasted, start taking allergy medications before your symptoms start. 4 Close doors and windows at night or any other time when pollen counts are high. 4 Avoid outdoor activity in the early morning when pollen counts are highest. Keep indoor air clean There’s no miracle product that can eliminate all allergens from the air in your home, but these suggestions may help: 4 Use the air conditioning in your house and car. 4 If you have forced air heating or air conditioning in your house, use high-efficiency filters and follow regular maintenance schedules. 4 Keep indoor air dry with a dehumidifier. 4 Use a portable high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter in your bedroom. 4 Clean floors often with a vacuum cleaner that has a HEPA filter.
pseudoephedrine (Sudafed, Afrinol, others) can provide temporary relief from nasal stuffiness. Decongestants also come in nasal sprays, such as oxymetazoline (Afrin) and phenylephrine (Neo-Synephrine). Only use nasal decongestants for a few days in a row. Longer-term use of decongestant nasal sprays can actually worsen symptoms (rebound congestion). 4 Nasal spray: Cromolyn sodium nasal spray can ease allergy symptoms and doesn’t have serious side effects, though it’s most effective when you begin using it before your symptoms. Immunotherapy Allergy shots are some times necessary if allergy symptoms are worse. SLIT: Sub Lingual Immunotherapy with Grastek or oral air as per your Allergist advice. See your health care provider before use of any medication.
Try an over-the-counter remedy Several types of nonprescription medications can help ease allergy symptoms. They include: 4 Oral antihistamines: These can help relieve sneezing, itching, a runny nose and watery eyes. Examples of oral antihistamines include loratadine (Claritin, Alavert), cetirizine (Zyrtec Allergy) and fexofenadine (Allegra Allergy). 4 Decongestants: Oral decongestants such as www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

‘Uncharted’: Despite flaws, a popcorn blockbuster
By: TROY RIBEIRO
Duration: 116 minutes. Director: Ruben Fleischer Cast: Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, Sophia Ali, Tati Gabrielle, Antonio Banderas, Patricia Meeden, Sarah Petrick, Rudy Pankow Rating: **1/2 ‘Uncharted’ is an actionpacked adventure film based on a video game series- of the same name. It is an origin story that introduces us to treasure hunter Nathan Drake. At the same time, it is an action thriller about two lethally competing scavengerhunt teams. Squeezing action sequences from the multiple games series, ‘Uncharted’ ironically does not waste any time- in explaining the backstories of any of its characters or unnecessary
exposition. It directly plunges into action and adventure that takes place, in the air, on the water, and in the tombs.
Tom Holland plays Nathan Drake, an orphan whose only close relative is his brother Sam (Rudy Pankow), who he has not seen in years. Now older, Nathan works as a bartender and petty thief who snatches jewellery off his customers while waiting for them. Then one day, he meets Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg), who recruits him to find the legendary stash of gold, which essentially is pirate booty that was dumped- by the survivors of the Magellan expedition in 1522. Sully also assures Nathan that they might find his long-lost brother Sam. The two of them soon plan an auction-house heist which does not go as planned.
It does not take long for them to meet other mercenaries and henchmen, whether they are allies or adversaries. Topping the list are; Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas)- the pair’s chief rival whose ancestors had funded the Magellan mission, Chloe Frazer (Sophia Ali) - an associate of Sully with whom Nathan shares a relationship, Jo Braddock (Tati Gabrielle) an associate of Moncada, and the Scottish hooligan (Steven Waddington) whose brogue is so thick that it is virtually difficult to understand him. They all keep everyone in this world spinning on their toes. The narrative navigates through a razor-thin script overloaded with mad-dash caper, propelled by actors you wish after a while had more meaningful things to exhibit. On the performance frontTom Holland pulls off Nathan Drake with aplomb. In a rough and beefed-up mode, Tom exhibits physical flair as well as the same boyishly ingratiating persona that he displayed as Peter Parker, but with a hint of darkness added. On the other hand, Sully, Mark Wahlberg does a decent job of playing the wise-cracking mentor to Holland. Making his eyes go opaque, he has a funny way of simultaneously making you want to trust and distrust
36

him that balances well with Holland’s goofy, clumsy nature. Nevertheless, both display a fair amount of chemistry as their characters- try to solve clues leading to the treasure. However, very often, their banter seems forced to generate a laugh or distract the audience from the lacklustre, cat-andmouse plot. Antonio Banderas is spot-on as the ruthless Spanish tycoon who would do anything, even eliminate the members of his own family, who might come in his way of finding the loot. So is Tati Gabrielle as the sexy Jo Braddock, who has a penchant for using knives in combat. Sophia Ali is competent as the unreliable Chloe Frazer, an offand-on ally of Nathan. Mounted with ace production values, the absurdity of the action set-pieces proves more exhilarating than exhausting. There is a breathless chase through Barcelona’s tourist sites, a flamboyant plane sequence that also involves - a falling car, helicopters in an action explosion, and a fair number of fights. Overall, ‘Uncharted’ despite its flaws, is a popcorn blockbuster that you will enjoy if you keep your mind aside.

Dating dictionary circa 2022 entire relationship, if you can call it that, is built on convenience.
The paradox of today’s awakened people is that, on the one hand, they claim to despise labels, but on the other hand, they methodically define every single phenomena or behaviour in their lives, be it their work surroundings, sexuality, relationships, etc. With this in mind, MatchMe co-founders Mishi Sood and Tania Sondhi, released a dating dictionary for 2022: Bread Crumbing: This is a timeless classic.
