VICTORIA DAY 2019
V
ictoria Day, also known as May Two-Four, May Long, and May Long Weekend, is a Canadian holiday on the Monday preceding May 25.
House of Commons became more important and powerful in British politics. The monarch’s birthday has been celebrated in Canada since before the beginning of Queen Victoria’s reign. After her death, in 1901, May 25 became known as Empire Day. The sovereign’s official birthday was still celebrated, often on the King’s or Queen’s actual birthday. In 1952, Empire Day was moved to the Monday before May 25 and since 1953, the official birthday of Queen Elizabeth II has been celebrated on this date in Canada. In 1958, Empire Day became known as Commonwealth Day, which was moved to the second Monday in March. The Monday before May 25 then became known as Victoria Day, which is a Canadian statutory holiday. Courtesy: timeanddate.com
Is Victoria Day a Public Holiday? Victoria Day is a public holiday in 10 provinces and territories, where it is a day off for the general population, and schools and most businesses are closed. What Do People Do? In some cities, fireworks display or parades are held to mark Victoria Day. One of the most notable parades is held in the city of Victoria, British Columbia, which was named after Queen Victoria. Many people gather in parks to enjoy fireworks displays, which are particularly impressive in Hamilton and Toronto also. For many people, the long Victoria Day weekend marks the end of the winter and the unofficial start of the spring or summer season. After this weekend, gardeners can be reasonably sure that there will be no more frost until the autumn so they can sow or plant out delicate crops and plants. For the same reason, people with recreational homes in colder parts of the country often go to them to open them up for the summer. In addition, many amusement parks and outdoor attractions open for their summer season this weekend. Notably, stores on Prince Edward Island are permitted to open on Sunday only between Victoria Day and Christmas Day. Victoria Day is marked as a public holiday at a national level. Many people have a day off work and schools are closed. However, it is not one of the general paid holidays listed in the Nova Scotia Labor Standards Code and it is not a designated retail closing day in Nova Scotia. An employer may agree to provide employees with Victoria Day as a paid holiday in Nova Scotia. It is not listed in the Quebec government’s list of statutory general holidays either, although National Patriots’ Day is celebrated in the province. Nor is Victoria Day listed as a paid public holiday in New Brunswick, but it is listed as a prescribed day of rest. It is not listed as a paid public holiday in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Newfoundland and Labrador Lieutenant Governor-in-Council can however, proclaim an additional holiday. Moreover, different holidays can be set by collective agreements to substitute the public holidays designated under the province’s law. Post offices across Canada are closed, while stores may be closed in many Canadian provinces and territories. Public transport services may run on a normal or reduced timetable. Background Queen Victoria was born on May 24, 1819. Following the death of 3 uncles and her father, she became Queen of the United Kingdom on June 20, 1837 and reigned until her death on January 22, 1901. During Victoria’s life, the British Empire expanded considerably. However, her powers as Queen of the United Kingdom were reduced as the

……serving His creation in time and with passion True Health Care does not reside with the Physician all the time, though it does, reside in our kitchens, in our homes and in our communities in most of the cases. All health care is a personal issue. What we eat, at what time we eat and, how much we eat and how we eat, beyond an iota of doubt, do affect our longevity and scale of our health on the ever-moving wheel of time

s I was tearing down the road in my black sedan, for a maiden interface, I was thinking about Genomics, the area of specialization, of Dr Sudarshan Bhagat – a first generation doctor from a Jammu based Dogra family in India. After settling for a pep tête-à-tête, I was in front of a 58 years young, lanky and handsome Piscean- the son of Mr. B L Bhagat- Excise commissioner of Jammu province. As I walked the talk, he informed me that he took the first breath of his life in the Jammu Distt. and is presently settled in Delta BC as an entrepreneur. He completed his MBBS from Govt Medical College Jammu and then went to Chandigarh for higher studies. He completed MD Pathology from PGI Chandigarh in 1988. Dr. Bhagat is Director of Advanced Genomics as well as in the Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia, Canada. He is a member of United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP). He was Professor of Pathology in PGI Chandigarh as well as in Caribbean Medical University. He has been involved in disease testing and prevention since 1980. Dr. Bhagat has many scientific research papers in many national and international journals. A few of his year-wise achievements in chronological order are: 4 1988- 1991- worked as a Senior Pa-
After God and the Mother, a Doctor ranks 3rd on the top priority list of a human being- the most sophisticated creation of God. But, when a mother prays to the Almighty, to relieve the child from the clutches of the nagging ailment, then the doctor jumps a notch ahead of the mother and through him, God finally cures; that is why, every doctor says: I care He cures…

The aim of medicine is to prevent disease and prolong life. Prevention is the only cure that costs nothing and has no side effects. In a bid to take timely cudgels, in the year 2010, this husbandwife team has come out with a unique concept of avoiding the life-threatening disease[s] by taking remedial measures before it is late or too late. thologist in PGI Chandigarh. 4 1991-2000 – worked as an Associate Professor- in Transfusion Medicine PGI Chd. 4 2001 – landed as a PR Holder in Vancouver BC 4 2003 – worked in Vancouver General Hospital as a Visiting Scientist 4 2004-2005 worked as a Faculty in Dentistry dep’t. of UBC Vancouver 4 2006-2010 worked as a Faculty in Xavier University and Aureus University School of Medicine Aruba Caribbean Island. specialized in comprehensive health assessment at molecular level and designing personalized disease prevention programs. Dr. Bhagat is actively involved in promoting awareness to the common public about health and wellness through live seminars, health events and media. He is providing information about role of genes in health promotion as well as in disease prevention. Dr Bhagat is author of book “Success Rituals”-a quote book to empower individuals for daily life challenges. His upcoming book “HealthTime” is targeted to connect with community to create awareness about the value of health. This book can help you to achieve your dream goals and create abundance by restoring your health. When I asked him the main purpose of writing this book, he quantified, “Life style changes [Nutrition, Daily Exercise, Stress Mgt. and Relaxation techniques] need to be better understood by, we the people, to avoid life threatening diseases. We get out of life what we put into it. Now permit me to modify the phrase, as I venture to write that “a Stitch in time, saves ninety-nine.” It will not be out of place to mention that Genomics is the branch of molecular biology concerned with the structure, function, evolution, and mapping of genomes i.e. the complete set of genes or genetic material present in a cell or organism. When I asked him to explain the objective of his organization, he stated, “The mission statement of our organization is Preventive Health Care, as we offer/provide Comprehensive Profiling Equipped with Internal Gene Testing, Cellular testing, Molecular Testing and other Biological testing’s by using Urine and Saliva from the patients. On family front, this husband wife team, is blessed with two sons, who have proved to be a chip of the old block. His elder son is Dr Abhishek Bhagat MD who is a cardiologist and younger one is Dr Abhinandan Bhagat MD. When I queried him the reason to chose Canada- an that too - to be a part of BBC [ Beautiful British Columbia], he replied with a pause, “Canada is a land of opportunities as sky is the limit. It is pollution free and full liberty is there with peace of mind where righteousness prevails and denizens love peace and promote brotherhood and humanity. Canada is a classic example of Unity in diversity.” When I asked him-after 10 years - where he sees himself, he opined, “I wish to open more Clinics in the hinterland area so that denizens of the area benefit immensely from Preventive Health Care Concept. How to Choose Summer Dresses for Your Body Type? How often have you absolutely fallen in love with a dress, only to try and on and be disappointed by how it looked on you? That sort of frustration isn’t something you need to grapple with every time you go shopping. With the temperatures soaring, it’s time to dazzle everyone with the perfect summer dress that helps you beat the heat while staying fashionable. your upper body and drawing the focus to your legs. Other flattering summer dresses include wrap dresses and dresses with wide belts.

I
n our summer dress guide, we’ve listed the best summer dresses for your body type. So take a look at how to choose the right summer dress for your body type. Body type: Apple When your body type is like an apple, your top half is bigger than the bottom half and as a result, you might have a large chest and stomach but small hips. It’s also the body type when your shoulders are broad and you don’t have a well-defined waistline. The problem is finding dresses that are flattering to this body type. Most dresses that fit well around your shoulders tend to hang loose over your waist and hips. They emphasize your lack of a welldefined waistline and make you seem broader than you actually are. While shopping for summer dresses, look for the ones that draw attention to your neckline such as V-neck dresses or dresses with plunging necklines. A-line dresses and dresses with voluminous skirts also do a great job of slimming

Body type: Pear A pear body type is when your bottom half is bigger than your top half and as a result, you might have a small chest and slim waist, but wide hips. It’s the body type where your shoulders are smaller than your hips. Opt for dresses that draw attention to the top half of your body, especially your slim waist. Avoid straight cut summer dresses and balloon dresses. Instead, look for dresses that accentuate your chest and waist. Off-the-shoulder dresses, A-line dresses, belted dresses and wrap dresses are the best choices for this body type. Body type: Hourglass The envy of almost every woman worldwide, an hourglass shape is when both the top and the bottom halves of your body are well-proportioned with a well-defined waist. The body type is considered curvy and while several women consider it to be ideal, dressing this body type isn’t always easy. Avoid loose-fitting and flowy dresses as they don’t do much to accentuate your curvy figure. Instead, opt for dresses that highlight your narrow waist, your chest and your curvy hips. Wrap dresses, fit and flare, bodycon dresses and belted dresses are perfect for showing off your best assets. Any summer dress with a scoop, sweetheart, halter or V neckline
also plays into your strengths. Body type: Straight A straight or rectangular body type is when there is no significant difference between the size of your hips, waist and shoulders. While this body type is waif-like and resembles the build of a supermodel, finding summer dresses that make you look feminine is a challenge. Since lack of curves is a major drawback, look for dresses that create the illusion of curves or accentuate your waistline. Opt for strapless or plunging necklines (with the right push up bra) to make your chest look fuller. Choose summer dresses that create a waistline such as A-line dresses, belted dresses and shirt dresses that highlight your narrow waist and show off your toned legs while adding a feminine appeal to your outfit. To find your dream summer dress, you need to truly understand your body and the way it’s built. Once you know your body type, it’s relatively easy to pick a dress flattering to your silhouette. Everyone is built differently and with this guide, you will be able to pick the right summer dress for your body.

SUPER VISA INSURANCE: IMPORTANT FACTS Sandeep Ahuja
C
anada is a land of abundant opportunities which attracts a large number of visitors every year who arrive in this country to share its opportunities and better quality of life. These visitors include students, businessmen, temporary workers and tourists from different nations of the world. Depending upon their country of residence and the reason for coming to Canada, their entry requirements may vary. In some cases, this will mean applying for a visitor’s visa. While residents of many countries are exempt from these types of visas, for an extended stay, you’ll need to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa. This may lead you to think that there is a backlog of applicants for this type of special visa. However, eligible parents or grandparents have very bright chances of a fast approval by applying for a Super Visa. This new type of visa has been in existence for over seven years (started- Dec 1, 2011) and is already proving to be an extremely popular option that is reuniting families across Canada. Super Visa: Meaning Current Canadian immigration policy allows visitors to stay for only six months at a time under the multiple entry visa. If a visitor wants to stay longer, they’ll have to apply for an extension which also means paying an additional fee. However, if you are a parent or a grandparent who would like to visit family for an extended stay, then you can apply for a Super Visa. The Super Visa allows you to stay for up to two years at a single stretch without need of any renewal. The application process for this group of temporary residents is a lot quicker. Typically, it may take eight weeks to get a Super Visa. The goal is - to get families together as quickly as possible! The Super Visa also allows multiple visits throughout the duration of the visa. To be eligible for a Super Visa, you’ll need to provide the following information: • The person’s ties to the home country • The purpose of the visit
• The person’s family and financial situation • A written commitment of financial support from the Canadian child or grandchild who meets a minimum income threshold • Complete Immigration Medical Examination • Proof of Canadian medical insurance (very important) Keep in mind that even if you’re from a country that doesn’t require a visa, (United States, France, Germany and Italy, to name a few) you can still apply for the Super Visa if you wish to stay longer than six months.
existing condition. It will depend upon what that condition is and, whether or not is has been stable for 3 to 6 months. Worth of Super Visa Insurance Undeniably, at some point in our lives, we’re going to need healthcare. But a major question is - ‘when to buy insurance’ and ‘how much will it cost’? A visitor coming to Canada is not required to purchase insurance; only those applying for a Super Visa need a
policy. However, when you consider that an average day in a hospital could cost above $3,000, (not to mention the additional charges to return to your home country) you can see that a medical emergency could quickly wipe out your savings if you aren’t covered by insurance. Then, why take the risk? Visa insurance policies are a low cost way of providing peace of mind to any Canadian visitor. A simple neglect to purchase adequate insurance may sometimes lead to hundreds/thousands of dollars at stake during a medical emergency. But prior to purchasing insurance, it is extremely important to ascertain the medical history of your parents for any pre-existing medical conditions. Your parents can either tell this to your insurance advisor or, you can confirm the same from your parents and convey to the advisor. It is evident that Super Visa Insurance is a valuable investment which takes care of the medical expenses associated with the necessary treatment of your near and dear ones during their stay in Canada, thereby offering you peace
of mind about their well being. As an independent insurance advisor working through Punjab Insurance Agency, I deal with different insurance companies offering plans for Super Visa insurance. I can explain to you in detail, various insurance plan options and coverage that are suitable for your needs and resources. Besides, I can also help you to purchase mortgage insurance, super visa insurance, disability insurance, critical illness insurance, extended medical plans, group medical plans, RESP, RRSP, travel insurance, TFSA accounts, health and dental plans along with estate planning suitable for your needs and resources. Super Visa Insurance: Meaning The Canadians enjoy the benefits of a first class health care system that provides full coverage for all of its citizens. Just because the Canadians are covered, it doesn’t mean that visitors will be able to take advantage of the same benefits. In fact, any visitor who needs any kind of medical care will have to pay for it out of his/her own pocket. The only exception would be if that visitor had a traveller’s insurance. With the Super Visa application, this type of insurance policy is a requirement. An applicant for a Super Visa must submit proof that they have medical insurance. That policy will need to be: 1. valid for at least one year from their date of entry into Canada 2. provide a minimum of $100,000 in coverage 3. covers the person for health care, hospitalization and repatriation (returning to their home country) Since you have to get this policy in place before applying for the Super Visa, there are refunds available in case you are denied the Super Visa status. This insurance policy should also be issued from a Canadian insurance company which eventually, protects the government and the applicant by making the direct payment process easier. Depending upon the circumstances, you could also obtain Super Visa insurance if you have a pre-

A Girl in a Whirl Contd. from previous issue (Part 30) It was just like yesterday, I had got married with great happiness and excitement. What a joke life had played on me! My Counselor dropped those papers at my home. She told me that I would have to fight the case myself. “I must die. Nobody needs me. What is the purpose of my life? But what will happen to my Nancy? The government will take care of her properly. I have no aim of my life now. All my dreams are badly shattered. Why was I getting this punishment? God knew what I had to see more in future. My death was the answer to all my problems. What to do with my sweetheart Nancy? I wanted to kill her before her birth. She must have born to go through similar pains I was going through. It would have been better if Nanny hadn’t come to this world. If I had aborted her then, I could have married a boy of my choice. The whole problem would have been solved. I wouldn’t have had the responsibility of Nancy. But the pandit had foretold that I didn’t have a happy married life. What if the second boy had been just like Sam? No-no, I would have known the boy pretty well before marrying

him. I had committed a huge mistake. I had taken a very wrong decision on the misguidance of those Christians. I should have killed Nancy before her birth. Then everything would have gone right. What could be done now? Just one wrong decision in life can ruin one’s whole life. I should have gone for a love- marriage. But my mom and dad had an arranged marriage. How happy they have been all their married life! How nice they both are! What is this life? What’s right and what’s wrong? O’ god! Where have you deserted me!”, entangled in my self-contradicting thoughts, I was getting more and more miserable. I was going to get divorced. I was sinking deeper and deeper into my depression. 33. How nice bhua was! I didn’t turn my phone on for two days, and neither did I talk to anyone. Neither I fed Nancy properly nor did I eat well. I just cried and cried on my hardest luck. There was a knock on my basement door on the third day. Bhua had come. I opened the door and cried bitterly putting my head on bhua’s shoulder. She quieted me down with the most loving pats. I told her the whole story. She asked me to think calmly. First of all, she asked me to take care of Nancy properly. Then she prepared food for me and fed me with it. Then she took me and my divorce letter to a government funded

organisation that assured me to provide free legal aid. They provided me with a lawyer to fight my divorce case and get legal compensation. The lawyer photocopied my IDs and papers. Then he asked me to fill out some papers and sign them. He assured me that he would take appropriate legal actions. We came home. My heart was throbbing very badly. I passed out the moment I entered my suite. Bhua sprinkled water on my face and brought me back into consciousness. I was crying and crying, and bhua was consoling me very bravely. When I didn’t stop weeping, eventually bhua scolded me. “Stop crying, Sonia. You are not a kid now. Come to your senses. Take care of yourself and look at Nancy. Be brave and learn to live. If you quit like this, how will Nancy survive?”, Bhua toned down her voice at the end. “Better if she hadn’t come to this world. I could have died alone.”, I said crying bitterly. “No Sonia, no! Don’t say like that. Children are god’s great blessings. Look at my youngest daughter. She has been married for seven years. She has no child yet. I’m lucky I’ve got such a nice son-in-law. God knows what would have happened to my daughter otherwise? What we haven’t done for her to have a baby! Who knows the plight of my daughter yet? I’m bound to Contd. in next issue

Kriti Sanon talks about pay disparity in Bollywood
raan Hashmi to star in #Hindi remake of Malayalam supernatural thriller Ezra... Directed by Jay Krishnan [he directed the original]... Will be shot in Mumbai and Mauritius... Produced by Bhushan Kumar, Kumar Mangat Pathak, Krishan Kumar and Abhishek Pathak.” Hashmi will be working with Jay Krishnan in Mumbai and Mauritius, where the shooting is scheduled for. The Malayalam Ezra had Prithviraj Sukumaran and Priya Anand in the lead. The film was around an antique box that Priya buys from a dealer. Later, Priya and Ranjan start experiencing paranormal activities. Ezra hit the screens on February 10, 2017. Emraan was last seen in the drama Cheat India along with Telugu actress, Shreya Dhanwanthary. The film was based on the malpractices in the country’s education system. He will also be coming together onscreen with Amitabh Bachchan for the very first time, for an intriguing mystery thriller produced by Anand Pandit and helmed by Rumi Jaffrey.
ay disparity has been a concern in the Hindi film industry, but things are changing, believes Kriti Sanon. The actress says the situation is getting balanced out, with female actors also getting what they deserve monetarily. On male actors being paid more than their female counterparts in films, Kriti told IANS over an e-mail interview: “I’ve always believed that pay has to be decided on the amount of work that you put in a film and the numbers your films drive at the box office. “The situation is slowly but steadily balancing out where female actors are also getting their monetary due. But we still have a long way to go.” Ever since her debut in Bollywood in 2014 with Heropanti, Kriti has done her fair share of women-centric films and roles. She says she feels good when films like Bareilly Ki Barfi, Stree and Raazi do well. But ultimately, it’s the content that matters, she said. “The content has today become the king and the deciding factor, which is great,” Kriti said. The 28-year-old’s latest biggest money-spinner was “Luka Chuppi”, a tale about a couple living-in together in Mathura and the complications that follow. The film has managed to cross over Rs 90 crores at the Indian box office.

MALE BIRTH CONTROL PILL Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC
T
he Birth Control Pill revolutionized women’s reproductive health when it was approved in 1960, but it has its downsides: weight gain, mood swings, and tender breasts, to name a few. Some critics have raised an important point: Why should females bear the burden of birth control when males are complicit in the kind of intercourse that risks pregnancy, too? Promising research on Male birth control reveals a new compound that could help even out this inequality — and not scare men off in the process. Currently Men use about 20% Share of Birth Control with Condoms A World Wide Study revealed that Large Number of Men are Receptive to the idea Of birth control if they would not

experience side erects n a presentation at the Endocrine Society’s annual meeting in New Orleans in Late March this year Dr C Wong of the Los Angeles BioMed Research Institute announced that her team’s trial of a male birth control compound called 11-betaMNTDC not only decreased a hormone linked to sperm production in a 28-day trial of 40 men but also preserved their libido. But the majority of the men in this study didn’t report any effect on sex drive. What makes 11-betaMNTDC unique in this regard is its double function, which could allow it to decrease sperm production while sidestepping a moodkilling drop in libido. Two hormones lead to the production of sperm, explained Wang
in her presentation: luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone. To prevent sperm production — and unwanted pregnancy — you want to suppress the function of these two hormones. The problem is that these two hormones also lead to the production of testosterone, which is important in maintaining male sex drive. The new drug, 11-beta-MNTDC (full name: 11-beta-methyl-19nortestosterone dodecylcarbonate), does suppress those two hormones, but it also plays the role of a testosterone mimic. In that way, it is like “a pill with two hormone actions in one,” said Wang. The study was a small one, involving 10 controls who received a placebo drug and 30 men who received either a 200-milligram
or 400-milligram dose of 11-betaMNTDC. After taking the drug or placebo once a day for 28 days, the researchers collected the results: All of the men who took the drug had reduced testosterone levels. Only five men reported mildly decreased sex drive and two reported mild erectile dysfunction, but nobody reported decreased sexual activity. There are still a few kinks to work out, like the fact that this pill would take four to eight weeks to kick in and that it must be taken with food. But when it does happen — Wang predicts hormonal male contraception will be available in 10 years — it will provide a much-needed option in a very limited field. “The overall goal of our work in developing male hormonal contraceptives is to create a menu of contraceptive choices for men (pill, injection, implant, gel), similar to the choices of method that women have,” says Page. By providing an alternative to condoms, vasectomy, and withdrawal, she and her co-investigators hope to get more men to use birth control — and prevent more unplanned pregnancies in the process. It would be about 10 yers from now that we see Make birth control pill in market

Saand ki Aankh: Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar’s grey look is out
T
aapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar’s first look from their much-anticipated biopic ‘Saand Ki Aankh’ is out. The poster focuses on Taapsee and Bhumi’s grey look of 87-yearold sharpshooter Chandro Tomar, and her octogenarian sister-in-law Prakashi Tomar. In the post shared by Taapsee Pannu on Instagram, both the actresses Bhumi and Taapsee are seen wearing a Haryanvi outfit - a ghagra, paired with a kurta. The Tomar sisters are seen trotting guns with a smile on their faces. She captioned the post as, “They may be old, but their aim is sure-shot gold!” The film revolves around the lives of India’s oldest sharpshooters, who began sharpshooting in their fifties. Directed by Tushar Hiranandani, Saand Ki Aankh is produced by Anurag Kashyap and Nidhi Parmar. The tagline of the film on its poster reads, “Tann Buddha hota hai, mann nahi hota.” (Body ages, not the heart) Cortsey: MID DAY

n show business, fame has its own side effects. ‘Game of Thrones’ actor Sophie Turner finally opened up about the impact that fame has had on her mental health. “I would just believe it. I would say, ‘Yeah, I am spotty. I am fat. I am a bad actress.’ I would just believe it. I would get (the costume department) to tighten my corset a lot. I just got very, very self-conscious,” the actor said during an interview with Dr Philon in a podcast titled ‘Phil in the Blanks’. She revealed that these feeling eventually manifested into symptoms of depression, including the desire to isolate one’s self and a lack of motivation. “I had no motivation to do anything or go out. Even with my best friends, I wouldn’t want to see them, I wouldn’t want to go out and eat with them. I just would cry and cry and cry over just getting changed and putting on clothes and be like, ‘I can’t do this. I can’t go outside. I have nothing that I want to do,” she said. Mentioning that she has been struggling with depression since five-six years now

she said, “I’ve suffered from my depression for five or six years now. The biggest challenge for me is getting out of bed and getting out of the house. Learning to love yourself is the biggest challenge.” Turner specifies that while her struggles with mental health have been significant since she was about 17, she doesn’t think she would ever hurt herself. “It’s weird. I say I wasn’t very depressed when I was younger, but I used to think about suicide a lot when I was younger. Maybe it’s just a weird fascination I used
to have, but yeah, I used to think about it. I don’t think I ever would have gone through with it. I don’t know,” she said. The ‘X-Men’ actor is currently undergoing therapy and treatment and feels much better. “I’m on medication and I love myself now, or more than I used to, I think,” she shared. The actor can be currently seen in the eighth and last season of ‘GoT’. According to E! Online, Now that the filming of the uber-popular HBO show is over, Turner is taking a break from acting.
ngelina Jolie has dropped ‘Pitt’ from her last name amid her divorce from actor Brad Pitt. The news comes two days after it was reported that Jolie and Pitt, 55, are legally single. According to court documents obtained by The Blast, the former couple filed a judgment on April 12 to move for a bifurcated judgement, which means they could end their marriage even as they continue to negotiate their divorce settlement. Sources told the publication “it was very important for the stars to emotionally break away from each other and begin their new single lives, so the documents were fast-tracked with their private judge”. The former couple’s six children are also listed on the document, but their names will continue to be hyphenated, Jolie-Pitt. “Both parents are focused on what’s best for the kids,” a source told people.com. The couple share six children together, Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh and twins Knox and Vivienne. Pitt and Jolie got married in 2014 but two years later, they filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.

To the World, a Mother ...
Mama or a proud Mother.
Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Health Coach of University of Victoria
A
ll of you will, unequivocally agree that, Mothers hold their children’s hands for a moment, but their hearts forever. My Mama was my greatest teacher, a teacher of compassion, love and fearlessness. She taught me, not to fear the fear. She taught me, to be bold and dutiful. During my early student years on my exam day[s], my mother used to be on the doorway of our house, impatiently waiting for my return from school and the squeezing hug she used to give me- with a flurry of lavish kisses on my forehead- as if I have returned after winning the battle- are still fresh in my chequered memory. The older I get, the more I realized to experience, how she nurtured me to not only grow up but to flourish also. Emphatically, I vouch, every mum is like my mum. This is a unique creation of God on earth. Thank you, every Mom on Happy Mother’s Day. What real moms are: Of all the rights of women, the greatest is to be a mother. Mothers are predestined / wired to love us unconditionally, to understand our moments of foolishness, to caution us for lame excuses while yet acknowledging our point of view, to weep over our pain and brood over our failures as well as cry at our joy and successes, and to cheer us on despite countless start-overs. God knows, no one else will and can do so. For every mom who did it all: Mothers raise their respective families. Many of them work outside the home also, others within their home. They support their extended families, love their friends, and daily try to cook nutritious meals, maybe care for a pet or two -- and this list goes on. Laconically, she is as busy as a bee. The job is humungous, the responsibility is too big. But her heart is intent on being the one to raise her children successfully; the one to have the most influence and the one working hard enough to earn the title of Mum, Mom,
Mother’s inspire us, and…… Every mom has always been an inspiration in progression. For as long as I can remember, my mum, has been there for me every time without fail. My ever-tested chum, my biggest cheerleader, a shoulder to cry on and everything in between. Always ever- ready to help and no questions asked. Maa Tuje Salaam [ Hats off to my dear mum} The best gifts my mom has given me is the ability to believe in myself and be independent. The incurable belief, that it is okay to try and accept failure after giving your 100 per cent. Because, as per her, it is the attempt that counts. She is and always will be our inspiration. For the mom who always looked out for you: She does a lot for her family inside or from the inside out. She takes care of her children, and even takes care of her husband too. She is devoted to do anything for her family. She does even more than one job for the family. I always reminisce my mother’s prayers and they have always followed me like a hawk. They have adhered to me all my life till date.”
For the mom who put her kids first: Mothers hold their children’s hands for a short while, but their hearts forever. For a mother parenting means thinking outside of herself. She is no longer being selfish or putting her own desires first. Parenting is indeed about compromise and sacrifice. But when a parent look into the eyes of her child and see the amazing human being he/she has created and know they are safe and secure because of you; no sacrifice seems too great. A mother clearly knows that parenting also comes with countless rewards that no business or career could ever replace. Only parents best comprehend the joys of parenting. What a mom does for us:
My mother had a slim, small body, but a big heart—a heart so large that – being hospitable- she used to extend a helping hand to everyone, beyond an iota of doubt. She happened to be my first well experienced teacher. What ever I could achieve in life, I owe it to her. My everlasting heart felt Salute to every dear mom, an angel mum and an amazing mama. Blessed is a mother that would give up part of her soul for her children’s lifelong happiness. Every mother is the root, the foundation of the family. She plants the seed that, we the children, base our life on, and that lead to enduring success. The strength of a mom is…. Mothers are definitely strong women. They are not kidding when they say that mothers are strong women. They need to be strong in more ways than their children will ever know. A good mother loves fiercely but ultimately brings up her children to thrive without her on the pedestal of time. She clearly knows that a day will come, when she will be no more. My mother refused to let me fail. So, I insisted and lasting success was the result. We cannot possibly put into words our gratitude for our mother’s love and affection. At least, I am failing to do justice to this Godly character. A mom knows almost everything…. There may be a no -way to be a perfect mother, but there are a myriad of ways, to be a best one. I can imagine no heroism is greater than motherhood. Motherhood is not for the faint of heart, but seasoned moms learn a few things along the way. A seasoned mom can tell when her kid is lying. Obviously, it gets harder to detect, for them, as they get older, but for the most part, moms know! Cont. on Next Page 45
A mother’s love for her children is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity, no boundaries; it surpasses all things and defeat everything and triumphs hardheartedly. A mother’s arms are more comforting than anyone else’s. Being immensely experienced, your affirmation is with me, I know.

…to the Family, the World My mom is my hero. She inspired me to dream when I was a kid; to believe that the ability to achieve starts in a mind. So anytime anyone inspires you to dream, that’s got to be your hero. So, my mum is my hero number one. Afterall, it’s hard to be a mom. Cont. from prev. Page 44 Mother- a full-time home maker: Being a full-time mother is one of the highest salaried jobs, since the payment is pure love. The choice to become a homemaker is a very personal decision. Becoming a homemaker is not a negative lifestyle nor should homemakers be compared to career people; it is an alternative lifestyle that a family chooses, to allow ease and happiness within the home and better shape the career of the kids in particular. Becoming a homemaker is one of the most selfless acts a mother can make. For the Grandmother: A mother’s mother also needs a special mention. Mother’s Day is for this super mom, too. A Grandma, have a garden, full of people who love her. The pangs of eustacy she experiences in playing / talking with the grand children have no parallel in life. A Grandma is such an important person in our lives. Thank you for all the time and love you give me. Happy Mother’s Day! Grandmother to a daughter: It moves the heart of a grandma to see her baby with her baby. A grandma is always proud of her granddaughter indisputably. When the grand daughter is grown into a woman of substance, accomplishment and compassion, the grandma feels at cloud nine. On this auspicious day every Grandma say to her daughter: Happy Mother’s Day, dear daughter! I’ve loved being your mom, and I love watching you be one. You do it so well. Beyond an iota of doubt, you’re a wonderful mom to my grandkids, are the pious feelings of a grand ma on this godly day. Spending time with her kids gives her pleasure extraordinaire too. For the Mom-to-Be on Mother’s Day: It’s a time to be filled with curiosity at butterfly kicks and tiny hiccups, to have fun collecting miniature socks and soft sleepers for the family member in the waiting. Soon, your sweet baby will be huddled in your arms, and it will be worth every cry, every caring minute to mother the child you already love so much. For the mother on her First Mother’s Day: The center of attraction is the newborn. All
Motherhood is a choice you make everyday, to put someone else’s happiness and well-being ahead of your own, to teach the hard lessons, to do the right thing even when you’re not sure what the right thing is…and to forgive yourself, over and over again, for doing few things wrong.

Thoughts of a father towards his children’s mother The mothering, the wife pours into his children is indeed a unique gift to the family too. Let her know that you appreciate the time and effort she puts into being a mom. A wife bestows the gift of children, the joy of family, the purpose of life. I believe, for all of us, the wellbeing of our children is the driving force to live in succession.

For those who have lost their mother: It is paining to note that those who have already lost their rev. mother[s] feel very forlorn on this day. I am also the unfortunate one who has lost his mother many years back. When I reminisce the golden period in the company of my late mother, I still get emotionally disturbed and displeased from the cockles of my heart. I fervently feel that whatever our mother[s] expected of us, we should try to achieve so, with sincerity of purpose and honesty and commitment. This way we can give our best tribute to the little angle who gave birth on this earth. Good people die early, because, may be - God also badly need such good people around Him. A mom is a beautiful guardian messenger with mesmerizing gentleness and energized motion. Always full of grace, poise and a lovely heart. A mother is the one, who can take the place of all others but whose place no one else can take. That is why, we love and respect our mums on Mother’s Day and always unconditionally.
In closing Every mom is WORTH the title of the MOTHER. Every mum is a proven guru. She teaches acceptance, tolerance, bravery, compassion, love and fearlessness to her beloved childrenthe gift of God. O Mama, every Mom, your hugs tell us, we are loved, loved, deeply loved, and we love, love, love you back unconditionally. Long live every mom. Long live , all their children. A man loves his sweetheart the most, his wife the best, but his mother the longest ever. As we love our mother forever, time is opportune for, we the children and grandchildren, to join in unison and echo in a chorus: Wishing you all the best, every breathing Mom, today and always…… Celebrating you on Mother’s Day. ……………… Happy Mother’s Day dear Mama!

5 makeup tips for people who wear lenses
F
or all those who have to bear the cross of having weak eyesight, we totally feel you. What’s worse is when you wear glasses or contact lenses, and are a fan of eye makeup. While there are a lot of tips and tricks out there for those who choose to wear glasses, the ones who opt for lenses tend to suffer. No one can understand the pain behind accidentally poking your eye with a kohl pencil, or dusting some eyeshadow under your lens. Yes, the struggle is real! These tips and tricks will help you tackle the lens beauty conundrum instantly. Tip 1: When looking for makeup, make sure you read the fine-print and pick oil-free products – including products that go on your face. Oily makeup can spread into your eyes and mess up your contact lenses. Tip 2: Always wash your hands when you’re using them to apply your lenses or your makeup. You will also need to make sure they’re completely dry, as tap water contains bacteria which can irritate when it comes in contact with your lenses. Tip 3: Skip the clumpy mascara. Yes, we get that it’s an awesome trend…but if you want to save your eyes the trouble, stick to a lighter coat of the product. Also stay away from fibre mascaras as the excess particles are likely to fall into your eyes and get under your lenses. Tip 4: Make sure you use a liquid eyeliner as opposed to a kohl pencil. It might take a little work to work the tip, but it is the better option. A pencil increases the chances of you poking your eye, which is even worse when you wear contact lenses. Tip 5: Steer clear from the ledge of the lid aka the waterline – the area that touches your eyeballs. If it’s blocked with makeup, it can dry your eyes out. Say goodbye to tightlining peeps! Ways to take care of your lips naturally
T
he skin on your lips is much thinner than the skin on the other parts of the body. This makes it easier for it to crack and chap and makes it much more important for you to take extra care of it.
the gym
Chapping This can occur almost in any season. 4 To prevent and treat, apply a good lip balm daily. 4 Do it in such a way that it slightly overlaps the edges of the lips. 4 Look for a balm which provides sun protection and has elements like Vitamins A, C or E and AHAs. Splitting Cracks often occur after sleeping in dry air. 4 To prevent this, be sure to apply a good lip balm or a thick moisturiser before going to bed. 4 Also try to keep your lips as dry as possible, as bacteria in the air can cause them to crack. Cold sores This is caused by viral infections and often look like blisters and open scabs. 4 To avoid re-infection, use cotton swabs to apply lipstick while sore is visible. 4 Also make sure that you do not apply a lipstick or a lip gloss if you have blister on your lips. This can cause further infection and also make your lips drier. Lipstick bleeding This begins as the skin around the mouth loses collagen and elastic tissue with age. 4 Use a waxy lip liner to outline your lips. This will contain the lipstick within the line. 4 You can also ensure that your lipstick does not bleed by keeping a thin layer of cotton around your lips to prevent this faux pas to happen. Belly dancing Focusing mainly on footwork to help move the waist, belly dancing is one of the best workouts out there. Not only that, its Middle-Eastern origins are apparently related to helping pregnant women birth babies more easily with the movements.
Want killer legs and toned thighs? The leaps, kicks and jumps in jazz dancing are perfect for that. Much like ballet, jazz is all about flexibility, balance and great posture. Jazz also involves using a lot of hand movements, leading to a good arm workout as well.
Zumba More than just a dance, Zumba is actually a fitness programme developed around dancing, mostly to Latin American music. The lively music and energetic vibe make you feel like you’re at a beach party. This exercise can be enjoyed by men, women and kids, alike!
Hip Hop If you want to be the best dancer in the room, hip hop is the dance form that needs to be in your arsenal. It works with many kinds of music, involves a fair bit of creativity and free-styling, and gives you an intensive workout.
Pole dancing Great for people who already have good core strength, pole dancing helps develop muscles, balance and flexibility. If you have joint pain, back problems or poor fitness, this might not be the best exercise to start with. Jazz dancing

“My Dog Has Worms in His Heart!”

or this month’s issue, we will be focusing on a disease known as Canine Heartworm Disease. In most cases, there will be no signs seen in heartworm infected dogs. However, for the patients who do elicit signs; the
most common one seen is coughing. Other major signs can include weight loss, exercise intolerance, difficulty in breathing and even ascites (fluid accumulation within the abdominal region). If your dog displays any of the fore-mentioned signs, it is highly recommended that you bring him or her to your veterinarian immediately. Your vet may wish to conduct a few tests in order to confirm if your dog has heartworm disease. The most common test performed is called a Heartworm Antigen Test. This test detects the adult, female worms present in the heart. Another known test is called the Filter or Modified Knott’s Test, which helps to detect specific organisms, known as microfilariae.
LIFESTYLE
sports
He or she may also wish to perform chest radiographs or an echocardiogram, depending on the severity of each individual patient’s case. The main protocol towards treatment of Heartworm Disease consists of three factors. A drug known as Melarsomine is normally administered in three doses. The first two are given 24 hours apart, while the third one is given 1 – 3 months later. Exercise restriction plays a significant role in the health management of a patient with this disease. It is especially recommended for 4 – 6 weeks after every dose of Melarsomine is given. Other medications, such as Prednisone or NSAIDS can also be considered in order to aid with decreasing any inflammation seen around the injection site. Before the worms enter into their adult stage, a preadulticide treatment plan can also be given for 1 – 3 months. This includes the recommended medication of Doxycycline, which kills a specific bacteria known as Wolbachia. This bacteria is known to live within the immature stages of an adult worm. Monthly heartworm preventatives can also be given as a precautionary step towards avoiding this disease in your pet. When dogs with heartworm disease become severely infected, they can develop another condition known as Caval Syndrome. This disease displays a sudden onset of signs, which include severe lethargy, pale coloration, weakness and difficulty in breathing. This condition is taken as a medical emergency. Its treatment involves surgical removal of the worms; otherwise, the patient can deteriorate very quickly.

How to Avoid Stress While Studying for the Final Exam?
Did you know that stress has been labelled as “the silent killer” because it can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, chest pain, and an irregular heartbeat? With exams looming, stress (a.k.a. the silent killer) might have already come knocking at your door, which is understandable. 6. Talk to someone Letting it all out is a great way to soothe tension. Talk to a close friend or family member and tell them how you truly feel. Giving voice to what you’re going through can help you process your feelings, see the bigger picture and feel better about yourself. After all, a problem shared is a problem halved!

owever, becoming stressed while studying hard for the final exam isn’t going to help your performance, and in fact, it will do the opposite -- hamper your ability to perform well and score decent grades. That’s why it’s important to keep stress at bay and focus on your well-being while studying. Here are some amazing ways to avoid stress while studying for the final exam: 1. Exercise Exercising by doing aerobic activities such as running, dancing or spinning boosts your heart rate and causes your body to produce endorphins -- chemicals in the brain that act as natural painkillers. Endorphins help you reduce stress, anxiety and even sleep better. So get your heart pumping to get rid of the exam stress! 2. Step outside According to research, nature is

one of the best stress relievers. Spending some time outdoors walking in the sun or catching up with friends and acquaintances outside can help alleviate stress and make you feel rejuvenated and energized.
let it relax. When you’re stressed, your heart rate goes up and you breathe faster than normal. Deep breathing helps you slow down your breathing, which in turn reduces tension and relieves stress.
3. Take a shower Taking a hot shower can not only help relieve tension and soothe muscles but also let your mind wander. Letting your mind wander from time to time is useful in reducing stress and fueling creativity. So take a break and hop into the shower to calm your stressed mind.
5. Eat healthy food On stressful days, it’s extremely important to regulate your diet, reduce sugar intake and eat foods that help in relieving stress. Stress releases cortisol, the stress hormone, which also spikes your blood sugar level. Regulating your sugar intake can help you combat stress. Eat high protein meals and snack on mood-enhancing foods such as dark chocolate, pistachios, blueberries and pumpkin seeds.
4. Practice deep breathing Deep breathing is one of the best ways to calm your mind and
7. Get some sleep While studying long hours before the final exam might seem like a good idea, it won’t help your body in any way. Lack of sleep would, in turn, contribute to your stress levels, which isn’t going to help your performance during the exams. According to the Dalai Lama, sleep is the best meditation. A good night’s sleep helps your body feel relaxed and well-rested. This, in turn, gets rid of the negative emotions and makes your mind feel fresh and recharged. So make sure that you get some decent hours of sleep before and during your final exam. Follow these tips to ensure that your studying is optimal, productive and stress-free. Don’t let the pressure of the final exam derail you and affect your performance. Give yourself a break, don’t stress yourself too much and believe in your ability to do well in your exams.

Diet good for the heart can also benefit the brain: Research
M
aintaining a healthy lifestyle and diet has several benefits, and according to a new research if one starts eating a hearthealthy diet from their early 20s, it can benefit the brain by the time they are middle-aged. The study, which was published in Neurology, assessed around 2,621 people on the basis of three different kinds of diets that are believed to be good for the heart. The research has been quoted in The New York Times. All the diets focused on the importance of including fruits, vegetables, and whole grains while lessening saturated fat consumption. The diets were the Mediterranean diet, the DASH diet which emphasised on low-sodium

foods, and a research-based diet plan, which provides ratings to food groups on the basis of their favourability. The diets were examined by researchers when the participants were at different ages – like 25, 32 and then 45 years. Later, their mental acumen were assessed when they were 50 years and then later at 55 years. It was found out that those who followed the food group diet or the Mediterranean diet showed improved signs and did better in activities like planning and organising. After accounting for different health and behavioral factors, those who adhered to these diets exhibited a 46 to 52 per cent lower risk of poor cognitive functionality.

Train your brain to form good habits through repetition
I
f you want to form good habits -- like going to the gym and eating healthy -- then you need to train your brain by repeating actions until they stick, a new study suggests. The researchers have created a model which shows that forming good (and bad) habits depends more on how often you perform an action than on how much satisfaction you get from it. “Psychologists have been trying to understand what drives our habits for over a century, and one of the recurring questions is how much habits are a product of what we want versus what we do,” said Amitai Shenhav, Assistant Professor at Brown University. “Our model helps to answer that by suggesting that habits themselves are a product of our previous actions, but in certain situations those habits can be supplanted by our desire to get the best outcome,” Shenhav added. For the study, published in the journal Psychological Review, the researchers developed a computer simulation, in which digital rodents were given a choice of two levers, one of which was associated with the chance of getting a reward.
The lever with the reward was the ‘correct’ one, and the lever without was the ‘wrong’ one. The rodents preferred to stick to the repeated action that they were used to, rather than have the chance for a reward. Cortsey: IANS

09 Simple and Easy Tips to Take Care of Your Pearl Jewelry
W
ho does not love to wear a beautiful set of pearl jewelry? But when it comes to maintaining those gems and ornaments, most of us go wrong. Today, let us have a look at the ways to take utmost care of your pearl jewelry. Here are 10 tips for you: 1. First of all, never ever wear your pearl jewelry prior to applying makeup or fragrances. It is actually true for all types of ornaments. The chemical compounds present in makeup items or perfumes can damage the color as well as the structure of the jewelry. So, always wear your makeup and perfume first. 2. If there is any particular item of pearl that you need to wear for long time, make sure that you remove it each time before taking a bath. Pearls can get affected by excessive water. Besides, the soaps, shampoos and other products that we use during bath time can also react with the natural gems. 3. Do not apply and skin care product while wearing your pearl jewelry. Moisturizer, body lotion, and other similar products contain a lot of chemicals that are enough to make your bangles, rings, anklets, etc. look dim yellow. 4. While cleaning off your pearl jewelry, keep a piece of thin soft cloth handy. A silk or muslin is always the best choice. Using something thick and rough can be harsh for the pearls and you might end up scratching its nacre coating. 5. Be as gentle as possible while cleaning your dull or dirty pearl ornaments. It is recommended that you grab the cloth with three of your fingers and wipe the pearls softly instead of rubbing them. 6. Sometime a simple wiping cannot take out the dirt from the surfaces of the gems. In such situations, damp the cloth in plain water a little and use it for cleaning purpose. You need to be very careful at this step as making the cloth too much wet may loosen the pearls from the base and damage the entire piece of jewelry. 7. Many of us simply pack off pearl jewelry right after cleaning them with a damp cloth. It is absolutely a wrong process. There must be a gap of at least 10 minutes, called ‘breathing time’, between cleaning and packing. During this period, keep the ornaments under the fan and let them dry completely. It is very important for maintaining the quality and beauty of pearls. 8. Stuffing all pearl ornaments in a small cramped box is a strict ‘no-no’. If each of them is not provided with enough room, the settings will get damaged and the gems will easily get detached from the base. 9. Keep and store your pearl jewelry separately. It is essential for their proper maintenance. If you store them with other ornaments, the shine of the pearl coating will get reduced due to friction. Moreover, if there is any item with pointed borders, the chance is big that the coating will get scratched out.

How to Get Back
Happiness in Life?
It’s no secret that everyone wants to be happy. However, it’s not always easy to stay happy. When life gets monotonous or things don’t work out the way you imagined in your head, you tend to be miserable and nothing seems to make you happy. surrounded by some really toxic people in your life. While completely severing ties with toxic people might be quite painful and a bit extreme, sometimes it’s the only choice. Focus on surrounding yourself with happy and fulfilling relationships. If cutting ties entirely isn’t feasible, make sure that you establish boundaries and define what you will tolerate. Toxic people are prone to creating drama in their lives to seek attention. Whenever that happens, stay away and don’t get pulled into their drama.

hile it’s difficult to feel happy when you’re down in the dumps, it’s not completely impossible. Here are some incredible ways to get back happiness in life: 1. Accept yourself It’s quite common to get upset over your shortcomings in life, be it your body image, your income, your lifestyle or your career. While being ambitious is a good thing, it shouldn’t make you feel disappointed with yourself. Loving yourself and accepting yourself for who you are -- the victories as well as the shortcomings -- is the first step to being happier. Stop being so hard on yourself and focus on building more self-love. 2. Do something you love When was the last time you did something you absolutely loved and

completely lost track of time while doing it? If your answer is never, then now is a good time to ask yourself what would you really enjoy doing. It could be anything from art and music to dancing or photography. Find what you love and start doing it right away. 3. Take some risks A ship is always safe at the shore, but that is not what it’s built for. What Albert Einstein meant with this quote was that for you to live a fulfilling and purposeful life, you must step out of your comfort zone. That involves taking risks and pursuing life choices that might scare you at first. If you’re too scared to try something new, your life may never change and your misery
might continue. 4. Become more active Exercising or engaging in physical activity helps your body produce endorphins, which are feel-good chemicals that relieve stress and boost happiness. Exercising regularly also ensures that your body stays active and your mind remains sharp and alert. The hardest part about exercising is mustering up enough motivation to go through with it. Pick activities that you enjoy doing and loop in some of your friends or family members to keep your commitment towards exercising. 5. Get rid of the toxic people in your life It’s hard to stay happy if you’re
6. Go for a walk outdoors We spend so much of our time indoors that a walk in the sun surrounded by nature might prove refreshing. Being in the presence of the sun and nature works wonders for our bodies and minds. Take advantage of what nature has to offer and make these walks a habit. Let your mind wander and simply focus on breathing deeply and soaking in as much sun as possible. Things don’t need to be perfect for you to be happy. Happiness is letting go of what you think your life should look like and focusing on doing what you love and enjoy the most. By simply changing some habits and adopting a positive mindset, you can easily get back happiness in life.

How to Stop Mindless Eating … Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Health Coach of University of Victoria
M
indless eating can be defined as eating food without paying adequate attention to -what and how much and at what time -it is being eaten. We make many decisions about our food choices per diem sometimes unconsciously and falling victim to our taste buds. We have about a total of approximately 10,000 taste buds that are located along the tongue, palate, pharynx, and larynx. Our unconscious mind, normally speaking, refer to mindless eating, which may cause us to overeat, promoting weight gain and other life-threatening diseases viz. Heart disease, Hypertension, Stroke and Cancer. Eating mindlessly, also undermines weight management efforts by causing people to eating too much, making poor food choices, and losing touch with feelings of hunger and satiety [feeling full]. The Effects of Serving Size: Visual cues affect decisions around how much to eat and drink. A tall skinny glass easily looks fuller than a short, wide one, so more tends to be poured into a shorter glass. Portions that are the same size will look smaller on a large plate than on a smaller one, leading to larger portions being served when a plate size is bigger. Putting food on a small plate has the opposite effect; the portion looks larger and for many, the meal is over when the plate or bowl is empty so making these small changes can be helpful for healthy eating. Friends and Family members influence eating: We, the people, are influenced by the eating habits of those with whom we eat. In one study, when two friends restricted the amount of food, they ate without telling a third friend, the third friend also ate less. Conversely, diners eat more when the people they are eating with consume large portions. Environmental Changes to reduce Mindlessness: A series of small changes to one’s environment can reduce mindless eating and its effects on food intake. These can include switching to smaller plates and bowls; using tall, thin glasses; measuring and serving appropriate portions; and being aware of the influence of others at mealtime. Use visual reminders: Behavioral scientists believe one of the main reasons people overeat is because they rely on external rather than internal cues to decide whether they feel hungry or not. Unfortunately, this leads to eat more than you
Thanks to smart marketing, even foods labeled as healthy can push some people to mindlessly overeating. Towards proper cudgels, we need to master the technique of reading labels correctly and unmask the jugglery of numbers. Lowfat” labels are a prime example, as foods low in fat are not necessarily low in calories.

Learn to eat food, but not too much. Fuel the body rightfully by planning breakfast, lunch and dinner. Stay away from processed food to the extent possible. Always remember that moderation is the key. Eat to live, don’t live to eat. need to. Use visual reminders of the foods and drinks you consume to help you stay mindful of how much you’ve already consumed. Favor smaller portions: Favoring smaller portions or packages can help you reduce the number of calories you consume by up to 25% without even noticing it. It will not be out of place to mention that we need to keep in mind what is, known as the portion size effect, otherwise it may contribute to significant weight gain over time. Use smaller plates and taller glasses: Replacing large plates with smaller ones and wide, short glasses with tall, thin ones are two easy ways to reduce your portion sizes and limit the effects of mindless eating. Studies suggest that people tend to eat 92% of the food they serve themselves. Therefore, reducing the amount of food you serve yourself can make a significant difference in the number of calories you consume. One easy way to reduce portion sizes is to use smaller plates and thin and taller glasses. Simply using 9.5-inch (24cm) plates instead of 12.5-inch (32-cm) plates can help you easily eat up to 27% less food. Therefore, pick wide, short glasses to help you drink more water and tall, thin ones to help you limit alcohol and other high-calorie beverages. Decrease variety of food: Reducing the number of food items and different varieties of the same food class you’re exposed to, will help prevent you from eating more junk food than your body can tolerate. For example, if for desert there are 5 items, then we consume more [ by 20%] as compared with one item. As per medical experts, this happens due to “sensory-specific satiety” phenomenon. The basic idea is that your senses tend to get numb after you’re exposed to the same stimulus- the same flavors- many times. Having a wide variety of flavors in the same meal can delay this natural numbing, and thereby pushing you to eat more. To make sensory-specific satiety work for you, try limiting your choices. For instance, pick only two appetizers to start with and stick to it. Keep in mind that this school of thought mainly applies to junk food only. Eating a variety of healthy foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and nuts, is immensely beneficial to your health. Keep, tempting treats, out of sight: Keep some
foods under cover or out of sight. Rightly they say “out of sight, out of mind”. This helps in avoiding mindless eating. Scientists believe that seeing food, pushes you to consciously decide whether to eat it or not. Seeing it more often increases the chances you’ll choose to eat the food. That is the reason, why many stores exhibit numerous things near the cash register area. Increase the inconvenience of eating: Take the convenience out of eating. Adding extra steps will allow you to turn a mindless eating behavior into a conscious choice, reducing the chance of overindulgence. If you keep late night snack out of your bed room, chances are you will eat less, because you get time to re-think. In some houses, there is a rule that, food will be served on the dining table only- not bed room; this inconvenience promotes eating less. The more work is needed to eat a food, the less likely you are to eat it. Slowly eat your food: Slowing down your eating speed is an easy way to consume fewer calories and enjoy your meal better. Medical experts believe that taking at least 20–30 minutes to finish a meal allows more time for your body to release hormones [ leptin] that promote feelings of satiety i.e. fullness. Slow eaters tend to eat less, feel fuller, and rate their meals as more pleasant than fast eaters. The extra time also allows your brain to realize you’ve eaten enough before you reach for that extra serving. Eating with your non-dominant hand or with a baby spoon reduce your eating speed and can make this tip work for you. Chewing more often [ at least 20 times per bite] can help as well. Unplug while you eat: Eating without using your TV, computer, or smartphone may help decrease the amount of food your body needs to feel full and satisfied. These gadgets distract us in succession. Eating while you’re distracted can lead you to eat faster, feel less full, and mindlessly eat more. For instance, people watching television while eating their meals ate 36% more pizza and 71% more macaroni and cheese. Longer distractions extend the amount of time spent eating, making you more likely to overeat. In addition, eating while distracted may cause you to forget how much you’ve consumed, leading to overeating later in the day. Choose your dining companions wisely: When dining in groups, it is wiser to sit next to people who eat less or at a slower pace than you. This can help prevent overeating. As per recent surveys, sharing eating with just one other person can push you to eat up to 35% more than when you eat alone. Eating with a group of 7 or more people can further increase the amount you eat by 96%. Experts are of the view that when we eat with family or friends, we spend more time in eating. So extra table time is the culprit. Eat according to your hunger signal: When
hormone Ghrelin is released by the walls of the stomach, we start feeling hungry. Wise people rely on internal cues of hunger rather than external ones – like clock time or surrender to the taste buds-to decrease the likelihood of eating more than your body needs. Beware of health foods: Learn to read the product labels. Manufacturers are out to befool you and sell their products and go laughing all the way to the bank. Not all foods labeled as healthy are good for you. Focus on ingredients rather than health claims. Human beings have the tendency to unconsciously overeat foods that are considered healthier, or compensate for them by having a side of something less healthy. This is commonly known as the “health halo” also. Steer clear of the effects of the health halo by picking items based on their ingredients rather than their health claims. Also, remember to pay attention to the side items you choose. Buying in bulk and stockpiling foods: Stockpiling foods increases the likelihood of overeating. Instead, get in the habit of buying only what is necessary for the week under reference. Maximize food volume: High-volume foods help you feel full for longer period of time and decrease food intake at the next meal. Eating fiber-rich foods is an easy way to do this. A smart way to add volume to your meals without increasing the calorie content is to pick high-fiber foods with a low calorie density, such as vegetables. Fruits with low GI index and nuts in moderation with ample protein for feeling full is the key. Extra fiber and water add volume, which stretches your stomach, helping you feel fuller. Fiber also helps slow down the emptying rate of your stomach and can even stimulate the release of hormones that make you feel satisfied. A good rule of thumb to maximize food volume is to fill at least half your plate with vegetables at each meal. To consume vegetables in raw form or steam or blanch form is excellent. Tadka.com Conclusion: We can classify eaters in two categories. One type is Eat to Live and second type is Live to Eat. If you belong to first category, chances are you will healthy. If you qualify for the second category, then , time is opportune to transition from mindless to mindful eating. Kindly try some of the simple tips mentioned above. In doing so, you can definitely improve your overall health and even lose weight in a way that feels acceptable and can be maintained over the lane of time. Time is ripe for you to consistently eat food rich in lean protein, unsaturated fat and low in carbohydrates. For the best results, take a healthy decision and apply them consistently for around 9 weeks — the average time it takes to create a habit. Then healthy eating, will be a routine for you. Wish you enduring success, dear folks.

When you feel good about yourself, it trickles over into every aspect of your life. While it might seem like the cosmetic benefits of braces for adults aren’t as important as the oral health aspects, you can’t overlook how powerful boosting your confidence is. What Types of Problems Can Braces and Invisalign Fix? Clear braces, metal braces and Invisalign can fix a host of orthodontic issues. These are the ones I most commonly address with adult orthodontics at our practice: • Spacing – Spacing is when there are gaps between the teeth. It can be the result of teeth that are too narrow for the jaw, certain oral habits or missing teeth. • Crowding – Crowding is the opposite of spacing. It happens when there isn’t enough room for the teeth to fit normally in the jaw. You’ll often have teeth that are overlapping, protruding or blocked out of line. Crowding is typically caused when there is an imbalance in the tooth-to-jaw-size ratio. It can also happen if you lost your baby teeth too early or if you lose a permanent tooth. Cont. in Next Issue

Decoding the dress code for women
G
etting ready for work? Are you going with business casual or formal? Do you wear a uniform to work? Does casual dressing mean shorts and flipflops? Everyday office dressing throws up many style dilemmas but follow basic rules and you are good to go. GET THE FIT RIGHT Wear clothes that are well-made and fit right. Oversized clothes look shabby. Clothes that are too tight can be restrictive and highlight areas they shouldn’t. These need to be altered or replaced. Tip: Invest in crease-free pieces. RIDAY DRESSING The idea for Friday dressing is to retain the formal feel with a more relaxed weekend accent in your clothes. This can often be misunderstood. Just think of it as a casual take on your everyday dressing - think chinos, loafers and casual sweaters. Tip: When in doubt, ape what the boss wears on Fridays. DON’T BE BORING Make a conscious effort to look and dress distinctly different from the rest. Besides black and white, you can wear colours like subtle shades of blue, brown, green or grey, even a hint of red. Avoid gold, silver and other metallic tones. Tip: Change it up by rethinking colour combinations. JEANS AT WORK? Casual work wear should be distinctly smart and sharp. Jeans are okay to wear if you work in an environment like media, arts, advertising, start-ups, IT. Tip: Wear jeans that are plain in colour with no texture. Yes, no destroyed denims, please. CAN I WEAR INDIAN WEAR TO WORK? Occasionally, yes. In an ever shrinking world and a global economy, the more ‘universal’ you look the better. Dress in clothes that are globally accepted as regular office or work wear. FOR AFTER HOURS If you are going for a drink or party immediately after work change one strong element in your look. Men can lose the tie, roll up the sleeves and unbutton the shirt, while women can add a scarf, stole or some colour to their makeup. AVOID... • T-shirts with tongue-in-cheek messages • Garments with prominent branding • Loud and busy prints • Flip-flops • Shorts Courtsey: TOI
