Bhai Dooj
VERY year, Hindu brothers and sisters come together to celebrate Bhai Dooj. It’s a celebration of sisterly love - when girls perform rituals to protect their brothers, and receive presents in return. IIIIT IS AN INDIAN - CONTRIBUTOR What is Bhai Dooj? Bhai Dooj is a Hindu celebration of brotherly-sisterly love. There are two celebrations of this special sibling relationship every year. The other is called Bandhan. The word ‘Dooj’ means the second day after the new moon, while Bhai means brother. Legend says that, on this day, the Lord of Death Yamaraj visited his sister Yami, who put the auspicious tika (a religious red mark) on her brother’s forehead. The ‘tika’ can also be known as a ‘tilak’ or ‘tilaka’. Hindus believe that any boy who receives a tika from his sister on this day will never be sent to hell. According to another story, Lord Krishna visited His sister Subhadra on this day, after slaying the Narakasura demon. She is said to have welcomed him with the holy lamp, flowers, and sweets and put the same protective spot on her brother’s forehead. Courtesy:thesun.co.uk

Gurjit Bal… a Passionate Entrepreneur
s I was waiting for Gurjit Bal for an interface in a restaurant, I was thinking, how hard working we the human beings are? Moreover,” Punjabian Di Shaan Vakhri” (Punjabi’s are uniquely different on all fronts). As I turned my neck, a sturdily built – 6 feet--handsome man, in his early 30’s, was in front of me with a wide grin on his face. After exchanging courtesies, we settled for an interface. As I walked the talk, he informed me that destiny brought him here in Canada in in the year 2012. He is a born entrepreneur from Jalandhar (Punjab) India. May be Canada gave him a level playing field, where this gentleman ventured into Real estate Business. As they say, “Well begun is half done”, In 6 years he has found his moorings in this property business where he is pleasantly engaged. Remembrance Day
Canada C
anadians recognize Remembrance Day, originally called Armistice Day, every 11 November at 11 a.m. It marks the end of hostilities during the First World War and an opportunity to recall all those who have served in the nation’s defence.
Armistice Day
Armistice Day was inaugurated in 1919 throughout much of the British Empire, but on the second Monday in November. In 1921, the Canadian Parliament passed an Armistice Day bill to observe ceremonies on the first Monday in the week of 11 November, but this combined the event with the Thanksgiving Day holiday. For much of the 1920s, Canadians observed the date with little public demonstration. Veterans and their families gathered in churches and around local memorials, but observances involved few other Canadians. In 1928, some prominent citizens, many of them veterans, pushed for greater recognition and to separate the remembrance of wartime sacrifice from the Thanksgiving holiday. In 1931, the federal government decreed that the newly named Remembrance Day would be observed on 11 November and moved Thanksgiving Day to a different date. Remembrance Day would emphasize the memory of fallen soldiers instead of the political and military events leading to victory in the First World War.
Remembrance Day rejuvenated interest in recalling the war and military sacrifice, attracting thousands to ceremonies in cities large and small across the country. It remained a day to honour the fallen, but traditional services also witnessed occasional calls to remember the horror of war and to embrace peace. Remembrance Day ceremonies were usually held at community cenotaphs and war memorials, or sometimes at schools or in other public places. Two minutes of silence, the playing of the Last Post, the recitation of In Flanders Fields, and the wearing of poppies quickly became associated with the ceremony. Remembrance Day has since gone through periods of intense observation and periodic decline. The 50th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in 1995 marked a noticeable upsurge of public interest, which has not ebbed in recent years. It is now a national holiday for federal and many provincial government workers, and the largest ceremonies are attended in major cities by tens of thousands. The ceremony at the National War Memorial in Ottawa is nationally televised, while most media outlets – including newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations, and internet sources – run special features, interviews, or investigative reports on military history or remembrance-related themes.

During his 14 years of exile, Lord Rama along with Hanumana, Laxman and the army of monkeys had defeated Ravana who had abducted Sita. This battle itself signifies the victory of good over the evil. Bandi Chhor Divas Reflection: A Lesson In Selflessness
T
he Sikhs celebrate Diwali as Bandi Chhor Divas in memory of the return of the sixth Guru,Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji from detention in the Gwalior Fort. When Murtaja Khan, Nawab of Lahore, noticed that Guru Ji had constructed Sri Akaal Takht Sahib, ‘The Throne of the Almighty’, at Amritsar, and was also strengthening his army, he informed about it to the Mughal Emperor Jahangeer. He emphasized that he is making preparations to take revenge for his father’s torture and martyrdom. Jahangeer at once sent Wazir Khan and Guncha Beg to Amritsar to arrest Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji.. But Wazir Khan who was a devotee of the Sikh Guru’s requested the Guru to accompany them to Delhi as Emperor Jahangeer wanted to meet him. Guru Sahib accepted the invitation and reached Delhi. On their first meeting when Jahangeer saw the Guru, he was completely won over by his youthful charm and holiness. The Emperor gave a royal welcome to the Guru. But Chandu Shah could not bear it. His daughter was still unmarried and thus the rotten sore was still bleeding (that Guru Arjan Dev Ji and the Sikh Sangat had refused the offer to marry his daughter with his son Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji). At Agra, the Emperor fell seriously ill. The physicians tried their best but they failed to care him. Then Chandu Shah conspired with the astrologers, who were asked to tell the Emperor that his sickness was due to wrong track of stars and it could, be cared only if some holy man

his Goodness. He ordered Wazir Khan to bring Guru Hargobind Sahib in his court at Delhi with great honour. Jahangeer had realised that he was wrong for torturing and killing His father (Guru Arjan Dev Ji), who had not committed any crime or offense. He exonerate himself by indicting the crime on Chandu Shah and other officers. A Gurudwara known as Bandi-Chhor is built at the place where Guru Ji stayed during his detention. The Sikhs celebrate this day as Bandi Chhorr Divas i.e., “the day of release of detainees” and illuminations are made in the Gurdwaras and in homes. goes to Gwallior Fort to offer prayers to the deity. He also pointed out that Guru Hargobind Ji was such a holy man and he should be asked go to Gwallior Fort. At the Emperor’s request Guru Ji agreed and left for the Gawalior Fort. In the fort Guru Ji met many princes who were detained there due to political reasons. They were leading a very deplorable life. With the help of Hari Dass (the governor of fort) Guru Ji improved their condition. Hari Daas was a Sikh of Guru Nanak and he become ardent devotee of Guru Hargobind. Once when Chandu wrote to Hari Daas to poison Guru Sahib, he at once placed that letter before Guru Ji. When several months passed and Guru Ji was not released then Baba Buddha Ji and other devotees sikhs met the Guru. They informed him about the despicable condition of the Sikhs, who were waiting for him with great eagerness. The Guru assured them that they should not worry, he would
join them soon. In the meantime Sai Mian Meer Ji met Jahangeer and asked him to release the Guru. Jahangeer, who had fully recovered ordered Wazir Khan to release Guru Sahib. But Guru Ji declined to leave the fort unless the princes confined in the fort were also released. When Wazir Khan informed the Emperor about the desire of the Guru Ji, the Emperor was forced to agree, though he didn’t want to free the prisoners. But the Emperor put down the condition that “whoever can hold on to the Guru’s cloak can be released.” Having compassion for others, Guru Sahib was determined to get the fifty–two Hindhu princes prisoners freed. He had a cloak made with 52 corners, for each King to hold on to and Guru Ji finally left the fort with all fifty-two princes. As the Guru liberated all the prisioners he is known as Bandi-Chhor (Liberator). Jahangeer was very much pleased with
What do we learn from Bandi-Chhor Diwas? 52 Hindu Kings were freed with Guru Sahib. Guru Sahib could have left the Fort alone, however, Guru Ji thought of others before himself. For him the ohers freedom and rights were more important than his own. Guru Ji never thought only of his emancipation but was concerned about everyone’s emancipation (SARBAT DA BHALLA). This is the attitude and virtue which Guru Ji wanted to fill within his Sikhs. We should pray for His mercy. May WAHEGURU emancipate our soul from five dreaded vices and help us to enjoy real essence of light within.

Saif Ali Khan Gets Candid About His Character In Baazaar
A
fter winning hearts with his firstever web series Sacred Games, the Nawab of Bollywood Saif Ali Khan will be next seen in debutant Gauravv K Chawla’s Baazaar. The actor has rendered a variety of character sketches throughout his career and opens up about his role, Shakun Kothari in the film, as he finds it both challenging and complex. The character traces to be of a sharp, astute and money-minded merchant who knows his tricks to extract profit out of every business he undertakes. Saif went on records to talk about the preparations he had to undergo before essaying his on-screen character in the film. Not only reading and research but he categorically chose to get a first-hand experience of the share market before he started off with his schedule. Elaborating the same, the actor says, “I have always had a cursory knowledge of

the market... speaking to friends and reading books by people like Warren Buffet have been very interesting. To research for this specific part, I drew on many personal equations and people I know in Mumbai. The Gujarati businessman is a definite type...the trick was to make him scary, tough and very cool. The accent also had to work, without making it caricaturish.” Baazaar has already piqued up everybody’s interest for its intriguing and powerful narrative and we can’t wait to watch the film exploding with applauds in theatres this month. Viacom18 Motion Pictures, in association with KYTA Productions and B4U Motion Pictures presents in association with Emmay Entertainment, Baazaar, an Emmay Entertainment production in association with KYTA Productions, the film is scheduled to release on October 26. ctress Amy Adams says she likes to control things but to some extent. “I think I’m probably like most people. They like control to a certain extent and then they like to lose control to a certain extent,” Adams said in a statement to IANS. “I like being a bit scared, I like roller-coasters, I like driving a bit fast, I like motorbikes - I like that kind of thing. I like an adrenaline rush, and I like people who are much bigger risk-takers than me,” she added. The actress also got candid about playing a disturbed character Camille in “Sharp Objects”. Her character has Munchausen syndrome by proxy, which is a mental illness and a form of child abuse. The caretaker of a child, most often a mother, either makes up fake symptoms or causes real symptoms to make it look like the child is sick. Adams says it very difficult to connect to her character. “I did a lot of reading on that as well and that strange need for attention -- it’s so crazy to me. It’s so against every parental instinct I have, so I can’t really imagine it. I’ve had my daughter hurt twice in a way that required visits to the hospital and that’s not something I want to revisit ever. It’s traumatising,” she added. On keeping her role away from her personal life, she said: “I had to train myself how to not bring a character home as much as possible. But there were definitely times, whether from exhaustion or just living in the space of Camille, where there was a lot of insomnia, and when I don’t sleep I get a little cuckoo. “But I think age has served me well in that, where I’m able to look at it and say, ‘Okay, I know what’s going on. Nothing’s really wrong. I just need to go to work, do my job and come home. Make dinner, do something grounding.” Sharp Objects is aired in India on Star World Premiere HD. Cortsey: IANS

Layering: For winter, try to go for chic-yet-comfortable clothing like printed palazzo pants in deep, rich colours and team them with long belowthe-knee shrugs for a boho look. Add statement earrings and a scarf.
Voluminous sleeves: While heading for Sunday brunch or an office outing, go for a fitted dress with voluminous sleeves. The key is to let one feature of your clothing do the talking. Add minimal jewellery to keep things trendy. Extensive jackets: Denim jackets got an extensive ornamental update last season and the trend is here to stay this season as well. You can go for an embroidered denim jacket or upgrade your basic ones with a set of enamel pins. Team this with a maxi skirt and a T-shirt. Maxi dress: There is nothing as effortless as a maxi dress. The comfortable fit and flowy silhouette keeps things hasslefree and allows for ample movement. Choose this look for a sundowner by the beach or for a day of shopping. Go for a printed maxi dress along with strappy sandals in tan for the perfect look. Courtesy: IANS

How Do I Love Myself? To be able to love others, you need to learn to love yourself first. You are only able to feel content and happy in life when you are able to accept who you are, embrace your weaknesses, and conquer your fears.
Ritika Tiwari Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist
W
hether you want to build an empathetic relationship with others or find peace in life, it all starts by opening yourself up to the idea of self-love. Here are some ways you can discover self-love and embrace everything that comes with it: 1. Write down things you like about yourself Start by writing down things that you appreciate about yourself and things that you would like to change. Life isn’t easy and is complicated with many disappointments but if you don’t let go of the bad parts, you’ll never accept and love yourself. Take one bad habit a month and try to get rid of it. With every passing day, you’ll start loving yourself more and more. 2. Don’t focus on getting approval from others Everyone’s life comes with their own set of problems, for which they have to bear the consequences. Rather than being concerned about what others think about you, focus on how you are going to get through
26
NOVEMBER 2018
a difficult day. It’s only one life that you get and it absolutely isn’t worth wasting on being approved by others around you. 3. Stay away from negative people Keep your distance from people who don’t want you to succeed. It might difficult to recognize them at first, so take your time and analyse their behaviour. If there’s a particular person who sounds jealous when you talk about something good that happened to you or always gives you negative comments, then that person may not be someone you should have in your life. 4. Forgive your past mistakes The only way to truly move on to the better things in life is by forgiving yourself for your past mistakes. Instead of dwelling in the past and feeling guilty for all the things that
you did wrong, learn from your mistakes and make sure they aren’t repeated. You should also be prepared for the mistakes that you might make in the future and make sure you let them go as well. After all, to err is human. 6. Do something that makes you happy You can truly appreciate yourself and your life when you are doing something that makes you happy. For that to happen, understand the difference between gratifying exhaustion and empty fatigue. Gratifying exhaustion comes from chasing something you feel passionate about and taking a step towards your goal. On the other hand, empty fatigue is an outcome of doing something that isn’t inspiring but you are doing it anyway. Don’t spend the precious years of your life doing something
you don’t want to do. It might take time to quit what you are currently doing but once you are through with it, everything will be possible. 7. Create your own path before helping others Being a person who enjoys helping others is a great quality but don’t keep their priorities above yours. Help someone out when you are satisfied with what you are doing with the life you have got. Helping others by sacrificing isn’t the way to go. Lend someone money when you don’t have any financial problems. Give your time to help someone only when you have enough time to finish up your own work. Follow your heart and accept who you are. You will find this whole new person in yourself who is worth all the love and care.

Sophie Turner Studied Hard To Understand Her Dark Phoenix Role
G
ame of Thrones star Sophie Turner says she studied about schizophrenia and mental disorders to prepare for her role in X-Men: Dark Phoenix. The 22-year-old actor, who reprises her X-Men: Apocalypse role of Jean Grey in the new film, told Screenrant that director Simon Kinberg provided her the study material and she almost experienced what it was like to hear voices in the head. “As soon as Simon [Kinberg] kind of told me what the movie was about we just started straight away sharing ideas, sharing materials. Simon gave me a big, big book on schizophrenia,” Turner
said. “I actually found this thing online, on YouTube. And it was just kind of repeating, repeating, repeating, what it sounds like being a schizophrenic. So I used to walk around town with all these voices in my head. Kind of feel it out. And see what it felt like,” she added. The actor said she wanted to understand the complexity of her character and that is why she devoted so much time in prep work. “Jean is just ... she’s so, so, layered. She’s so complex in this movie. I really don’t think that I’ve done more research for a role than for this one and I loved every minute of it,” she added. Cortsey: PTI

Manushi Chhillar: Want To Do An Action Film
A
ctress Kangana Ranaut says she has never got anything in her life without fighting for it, and she would not want her children to live the way she has. Kangana spoke to the media at the wrap-up party of her film “Manikarnika - The Queen of Jhansi. Asked whether she feels there are any similarities in Rani Lakshmibai and in her own personality, the actress said: “I think her life was very tragic and she struggled a lot in her life. It’s not the kind of life which you will wish for somebody you like or you love at all. “Similarly, I wouldn’t want my children to have the kind of life I have had. I don’t know why but I had to fight literally for everything since I am born and that is the only similarity that I have with her (Rani Lakshmibai). I haven’t got anything without a fight in my life but I am neither proud nor ashamed of it. “I am just okay with the way my life is, but if you ask me that do I want this for my children or for whom I love, then my answer would be ‘No’.” Manikarnika - The Queen of Jhansi has faced a lot of trouble. First, filmmaker Ketan Mehta claimed that the makers of Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi had hijacked his script, but his plea was dismissed. Then, director Krish left the project. Kangana took over the director’s chair. Following that, actor Sonu Sood walked out of the film. Reacting to all the difficulties faced during the film’s making, Kangana said: “Each film has its own journey and this film also had its journey. It is true that we faced some difficulties in the beginning while shooting the film but our team is so strong that we overcame those difficulties and that’s why we feel like doing celebration here.” Courtesy: SIFY

I don’t want to be a damsel in distress. I want to be a superhero. I would love to do that,” Manushi said here on Wednesday at the Big FM radio station when she was present to celebrate women power. There were reports that filmmaker Karan Johar was keen to launch Manushi under his banner when she won the Miss World title, but there isn’t any development on that front. Asked when she will feature in movies, she said: “I don’t have a production house, so I can’t tell you that when my film will come. In life, all things have come to me as a surprise and I didn’t have any plans to do films. So let’s see how it goes.” Manushi went on to win the title of fbb Femina Miss India Haryana in April 2017. She represented the state of Haryana in annual Femina Miss India competition and was crowned

It has been eleven months since I have became Miss World. I have been to all continents of the world. I have travelled a lot and I met lot of people and last eleven months have been a roller-coaster ride for me.”I have learned so many things in the last eleven months which I haven’t learnt in the last eleven years of my life. After all this, I don’t know what next year holds for me.” Manushi was pursuing medical studies. She took a break from her studies for the preparations of the Miss World title. e all are aware of the importance of Insurance and the great financial support it can provide to insured’s family in case the life-insured dies. As per the needs/suitability of the client, insurance companies offer different types of plans such as: Term Life Insurance – It is suitable to cover the financial risk for our temporary needs like mortgage payment, funding education of child or loan payment if the life-insured dies during the period of coverage. It offers coverage for a period of 10 years, 20 years, 30 years or Term 40. For Term Life Insurance, the insurance company will provide death benefit only during the period of purchased coverage- if the life-insured dies within the period of coverage, death benefit will be paid to the beneficiary. But, no benefit will be provided after the period of coverage expires. Term 100 Life Insurance/Whole Life Insurance/Universal Life Insurance – These plans cover the financial risk if the lifeinsured dies. The financial assistance is not restricted to any age and is ‘in force’ for insured’s lifetime as long as he is paying the premiums. While Term 100 Life Insurance
covers financial risk without any cash value, Whole Life Insurance and Universal Life Insurance offer additional advantage in the form of cash value which is built up while you are paying your premiums. To make life insurance a more befitting experience for their clients, life insurance companies keep on introducing lucrative offers for their clients from time to time. For a limited period till November 15, 2018, an insurance company has introduced another remarkable life insurance plan which offers you guaranteed $500,000 cash values at age 65 if you purchase life insurance coverage of $1 million. But, it is not mandatory to purchase life insurance for 1 million. You can purchase insurance for more or less coverage according to your affordability and needs. The best feature of the plan is that

if you want to partially surrender (e.g. 50%) the policy at age 65, you will receive half of the guaranteed cash value and half of the insurance will keep ‘in force’. Let us understand the concept with the help of an example. A 25-year old nonsmoker female purchases one million dollar coverage and will pay $5,060 premium per year. If she pays premium for forty years (till age 65), she will have paid out the whole premium for the policy totalling to an amount of $202,400. But, on reaching age 65, if she wants to surrender the policy, she will have a guaranteed cash value of $500,000. As is evident, the guaranteed cash value that the individual has far exceeds the total premium that she has paid for the policy. Not only this, if she wants to receive a cash value of $250,000 by her retirement,
The cash values offered by this unique insurance plan are: •Among the highest in the industry •Best value for money on the market • Available from 10th policy anniversary • Partial or total surrender is available • Option of borrowing against cash value But again, a reminder! This wonderful opportunity is available only till November 15, 2018. To reap maximum benefit of this unique opportunity, without wasting time, please contact me immediately. A How Self-Improvement Can Change Your Life Facing obstacles and overcoming them is a part of life. We grow and mature by learning lessons from our mistakes and that process is called self-improvement. However, that is only possible when we are aware of our strengths and weakness.

ere are a few things that can help you through your self-improvement journey
1. Build a momentum There are times during the day when you are the most attentive. Utilize that time to get the major chunk of your work done, which might include homework, research or anything that requires complete attention and concentration. Over time, this period of high concentration will increase, so you can get more things done quickly. 2. Take responsibility Embrace the mistakes you commit and take full responsibility for them. Don’t resist and fight off negative emotions that come along with it. Convert sad feelings and disappointments into lessons and use them to avoid repeating the same mistakes in the future. 3. Accept yourself Every person is different and so are their strengths and weaknesses. Being jealous of someone for being better at managing people or doing their work isn’t going to do you any good. Instead, accept your strengths and shortcomings and work on improving them to become a better person. 4. Stay motivated Motivated attitude and selfimprovement go hand in hand.

NOVEMBER 2018
If a person isn’t motivated enough to become a better person, then self-improvement may not work for them at all. It’s important to remember that being motivated doesn’t mean you have to constantly perform tasks and be on your toes 24/7. It means creating a routine to stay on track, and understanding when to let go of it 5. Keep a journal Writing your thoughts at the end of the day in a journal can help give you clarity and improve as a person in the process. If you have a tendency to get into fights and speak hastily without giving any thought, then you should write down the words you said and the things you should have said instead.
Add a planner section to the journal where you can write down your goals and divide them into smaller ones. Make sure you checkmark on every goal whenever you achieve it. 6. Daily self-reflection Reflect how your day was every night for at least five minutes. Question yourself if there were ways you could have handled some particular situations differently. Once in a while, read things you wrote a couple months ago in your journal and analyse if you have improved. You should also check how far along are you in achieving goals that are approaching their deadlines. 7. Engage in mindful activities If you like to run, go on a jog once in a day. You can also do
yoga, if you find it relaxing. In case you have been feeling too stressed, you should let yourself go and relax a bit, only to get back to your work feeling rejuvenated and more productive. Engage in activities that make you feel good about yourself, whether it’s drawing, cycling, or even visiting the beach. You can also include meditation as part of your daily routine. 8. Ask for feedback Ask friends and colleagues at work what they think about you and if there’s something you should change. Make sure you tell them that they can be completely honest with you because you are looking for an opportunity to grow. Remember, self-improvement is a part growing up, so don’t give up without a fight. www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

3 Ways To Use Almonds For Soft And Glowing Skin
A
mong the many natural ingredients that are considered to work like a charm for the skin, one is undoubtedly almonds. Since the ancient times, it has been used in several beauty remedies to nourish the skin and keep it young and radiant. The readily available nut is a powerhouse of nutrients - it is a great source of vitamin E, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, and is known for its skin nourishing, anti inflammatory and healing properties. So if you are looking for ways to naturally take care of your skin, you need to include almonds in your skincare regime. We list out three ways you can make the most of almonds: 1. Almond and honey scrub Most of you may have come across several almond scrubs in the stores, but there’s nothing quite like making it fresh at home. Most people forget but scrubbing or exfoliating is an important part of a skincare regime, and almonds can help in removing dirt from deep within the pores without leaving the skin dry. Soak a cup of almonds in water overnight and then grind into a coarse paste. Take half a cup

of it and add two tablespoons honey and a few drops of milk to make a scrub. Use it to gently scrub the skin. Wash with cold water. 2. Almond and banana moisturising pack Almond is known for its incredible skin moisturising properties. You can use almond milk or ground almond to make a nourishing face pack and double up the benefits by adding bananas too. Take half a cup of almond paste, and add quarter cup of mashed bananas and a tablespoon of rose water. Apply it on your face and neck and leave it on for 20 minutes before washing it with cold water. 3. Almonds to reduce skin tan Another wonderful benefit of almond is it ability to reduce suntan by promoting the growth of new cells and repairing damaged tissues. Take half a cup of besan (gram flour) and mix it with one cup of almond milk and quarter cup of yoghurt. Apply it on your skin and let it rest for 20 minutes. Scrub gently and then wash with cold water. ourtesy: SWIRLSTER

TRAVEL
A Girl in a Whirl Contd. from previous issue (Part 25) She parked her car somewhere at the Scott Road, and taught me how to board a bus and buy a ticket. Both of us got down at Scott Road sky train station. She showed me how to read zones and time validity of my ticket. The same ticket was also valid for the sky-train travel. We boarded a sky-train from there and came to King-George skytrain station. Then she taught me how to change the train to come back. We got off the train at Scott-Road station. We took the same number bus and reached the place where Jasmine had parked her car. We had to cross the road to reach our car, and it was a very disciplined way even to cross a road here. These advanced systems were pretty new for me. I was trying to remember as much as possible. But I was feeling pretty much lost. Then she dropped me at my place. 29. Working out for a job The next day, I was to attend my class. My counselor called me early morning to remind me of my class. She helped me plan my route. I went by myself to attend my class. I was registered for my three-week class by another counselor at another institution for new comers to Canada. I called Jasmine in the evening. She didn’t take my

phone. I left a message for her that I wanted to talk something very important to her. Soon I got a call from her. “Jasmine, I want to talk to you something very important but I don’t understand how to say?”, I said “Sonia, you can talk to me frankly.”, Jasmine encouraged me to speak up. “I don’t want to keep Sam’s any memory with me.”, I said. “I didn’t get it, Sonia. Say clearly what you are thinking.”, She asked. “I don’t want to keep this child.”, finally I said concretely. “Sonia, I can let you know both advantages and disadvantages of keeping your child. But this will be your personal decision. You can get a whole bunch of financial benefits for keeping this child. You will lose several legal and financial advantages for not keeping it. It would be better for you to consult your parents in this regard.”, Jasmine explained me many more things. I called my mom to know in this regard. She could say nothing except for weeping. I could neither understand nor decide anything. My three-week course started. I made many new friends there. Jasvir became my best friend. We were provided with beginners’ knowledge in the classes how to assimilate into Canadian culture. I began feeling at home. We were asked to learn how to

speak English, which is one of the two official languages of Canada. Secondly, we were asked to prepare our resumes and apply for at least labor jobs in order to gain Canadian work-experience. Thirdly, we were advised to gain basic knowledge of how to use a computer. Fourthly, we were advised to do volunteer work at Food Bank, schools, Sikh Temples, Hindu Temples, mosques, churches etc. until we get a job. This way we would get Canadian-work experience. We should shake hand properly when we meet either a male or a female. We were also advised to greet everybody with a smile and to help others in some way, if possible. Jasvir told me that I needed certain hours of work experience in order to get maternity benefits. The other day, my bhua also took my phone number and address from my mom, and came to see me. “Sonia, I had thought if my dear brother’s daughter, Sonia, came here, his whole family would also come to Canada permanently. How could I know that all this bad was going to happen to you? Please forgive me, honey. I’m very ashamed of myself.”, bhua said truthfully and wept. Even my eyes welled up. I quieted her down. “Who can fight against fate, aunt?”, I had nothing else to say. Contd. in next issue

Simple Ways to Organize Your Handbag
A
handbag is very special to woman. Without realizing we do share a bond with it. Not an emotional bond, but one that carries all the baggage literally! Our bag goes through the day holding on to a lot of things, that’s close to us and to keep it organized is nothing less than a task! If you are a stickler for all things organized and want to keep your handbag neat and clean, to avoid the trouble of finding your keys and coins, follow these do’s, our guide on simple ways to organize your handbag.

Empty your handbag: First and foremost empty your handbag, to clear it of clutter. Discard all unwanted items, old tickets , unnecessary bills basically anything that is adding to the clutter. Next, make a pile of all things you need. Minimalism of your make-up box: When it comes to make-up, you will always want to carry your wardrobe along, but remember that’s not possible. Carry only essentials. Also, for everyday makeup for easy carry, purchase travel kits readily available. They are lightweight and extremely easy to carry and maintain. Store your make-up essentials such as lip gloss, lipsticks, nail polish, mascara, liner, bronzer, primer, foundation, makeup remover one of each in a makeup bag all together. Keep hair pins, spray, and ties in a separate zip-lock bag. Arrange your money bag: All the loose coins need to go in a separate coin purse and make sure they don’t float around. Keep your wallet only for notes and cards. So that when you need them in a hurry, you have a quick access to them. General Gadgets: Keep your phones, headphones, iPods, iPads in a section of your purse specifically for them. Use hair elastic to secure your headphones.
First-Aid and Survival: Keep a little pouch for contingency supplies that containstampons, cotton buds, needle, breath mints, aspirin, any other medication you need and Band-Aids. You never know when you might just need them.
This way the gadgets stay safe from any spilling or scratching. Keys Go Safe: Almost all handbags come with a built in section to store your keys. Keys are small and there’s a tendency to loose them easily in the handbag mayhem. To avoid the hide and week game with the keys, always place them in the key pouch, it’s easy to find and also easy to store.
Handbag Organizer: They have been built to make handbag storing easier! And we totally recommend it. Keeping in mind all that needs to be stored and how, the handbag organizers practically do half of your work. All you need to do is make sure you keep the things in the same place as they were before. Handbag organizing was never this easy, right? Plus, imagine everything is so organized you can find it one glance. You too can be one of the organized people, when it comes to handbags. Follow these simple ways to organize handbag and you will walk always with a clean handbag ready to find anything in it. Courtesy: BEAUTYGLIMPSE

How Social Media is impacting our daily lives and.... Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Health Coach of University of Victoria
Cont. from last edition part 2 Advent of Cell Phone revolutionized the world: The advent and addition of cell phones, laptop, I pad and search engine- Google, Mozilla, Bing, Yahoo, Safari et al brought a revolution in the world of Social media. Out of this Cell phone being handy, being with the user all the time and made tech savvy year after year revolutionized the whole game. Origin of cell phone Motorola was the first company to produce a handheld mobile phone. On April 3, 1973, Martin Cooper, a Motorola researcher and executive, made the first successful mobile telephone call from handheld subscriber equipment. The cell phone goes public in the year 1983 It took ten years for the technology that Dr. Cooper invented to become available to the public. The first public cell phones were put out by Motorola. When we look back over the last ten years and try to find some element that affected society in toto from a technical standpoint, there would be a couple of possible contenders. Towards example, the advancement of smartphone technology in such a short time is certainly impressive. However, the impact of social media, while intertwined with the smartphone is something that made even more of an impression. Consider just how easy it is to see what is happening on the other the Universe. Twitter and Face Book, Twitter, Instagram,
Social media is neither good nor bad or ugly. It depends on the user[s] when, why and how much one wants to give time for it. People from every walk of life are hooked to Social Media to the extent that it has relegated to the upper rung of addiction. Though we need Social Media from every angle – for the unparallel benefits it is bestowed upon- yet MODERATION IS THE KEY.

What’s Up revolutionised the world. This technology has proved that they are important to help people keep in contact and updated particularly during disasters. Cell Phones are Impacting Relationships -Romantic as well as Friendship: • Regularly chatting with friends/peers/ mates is made at ease, as people are only a click away. • Being attached to your phone can be a positive thing at the start of a relationship and a sign of blossoming romance. When you’re sending each other messages, it’s really exciting and pleasurable to get messages from someone who is interested in you.” • A 2016 study from Brigham Young University asked married or cohabiting women how technology (including smartphones, TVs and computers) was impacting their lives and the majority said it frequently interrupted their interactions, such as conversations, and mealtimes with their partners. • The study found those who perceived technology to have the largest impact were also likely to have lower relationship and overall life satisfaction. • This technology is definitely better but overuse affects adversely; the conversations, activities and time with romantic partners. • Users send unspoken messages about what they value most, which is encouraging. • Over Millions are always on the phone to understand each other in a better way. • Like in any relationship the best way to deal with frequent phone use is to start talking to your partner honestly about it. • Sensible people open up a dialogue and establish some ground rules, such as agreeing to certain times of day being the comfort zone for each other, so they connect or disconnect with each other in their comfort zones. • Excessive phone use- may be unintentionally, courtesy smartphones and social media have also made it easier than ever for people to start an emotional online friendship to start with and pursue it meaningfully on the carousel of time. • Honest and genuine people need to be aware of people’s phone habits, because there are cheating boyfriends who always try to defeat others • People do impersonate and play with the genuine sentiments of others to the detriment of others Merits of Social Media: Connectivity: People from anywhere
can connect with anyone anywhere. The beauty of social media is that you can connect with anyone to learn and share your thoughts. Education: Social media has a lot of benefits for people from every strata of society. It is very easy to learn from others who are experts and professionals via the social media. You can follow anyone to learn from him/her and enhance your knowledge about any field. Regardless of your location and educational background you can educate yourself, for free. Help: You can share your issues with the community to seek help and guidance. Whether it is helping in term of money or in term of advice, you can get it from the community you are engaged with. Information and Updates: The main advantage of the social media is that you update yourself from the latest happenings around the world. Most of the time, digital and print media these days are biased and does not convey the true message. With the help of social media, you can get the facts and true information by doing some research. Promotion: Whether you have an offline business or online, you can sell your products to the world at large. This makes the businesses more economically viable and technically feasible. Social Cause: Social media can also be used for the social causes. Social welfare activities and donations for the needy
Google has been making schools more high-tech with its suite of cloudbased computing apps whereas parents notice a ‘malaise of scrolling - which - they think, is detrimental in excess form for their kids’ health.’ “It is not out of place to mention that, the sooner the kids, adolescents, or teenagers get used to this platform, the easier it will be to make it their lifelong habit – which suits these mega companies.
Social Media is a new marketing tool – for business community in particular- that allows them to get to know their customers and prospects in ways that were previously not possible. Social Media is not a fad, it is proving to be just the beginning of the marketing revolution. people are given a wide platform. People are using social media for donation for needy people and it can be a speedy way to help such people. Spread Awareness – Social media also create awareness and innovate the way people live. It is the social media which has helped people discover new and innovative stuff that can enhance personal lives. Expands Business Reputation – Just like it can ruin any business reputation, it can also improve business sales and reputation. Positive comments and sharing about a company can help them with sales and goodwill. Helps in Building Communities – This world has many religions and beliefs. Social media helps in building and participating in the community of own religion and believes to discuss and learn about it. Demerits of social media: Cyberbullying: Since anyone can create a fake account and do anything without being traced, it has become quite easy for anyone to bully on the Internet. Sometimes with the help of social media Threats, intimidation messages are sent, and rumors are spread too to create discomfort and chaos in the society. Hacking: Personal data and privacy can easily be hacked and shared on the Internet. Which can make financial losses and loss to personal life. Similarly, identity theft is another big issue. Daily many personal twitter and Facebook accounts are getting hacked to affect personal lives. This is one of the most dangerous disadvantages of Social Media. Addiction –The teenagers are the most affected by the addiction of the social media. They get involved very emotionally, extensively and are eventually cut off from the society. It also results in wasting individual time that could have been otherwise utilized by productive tasks and activities. Fraud and Scams – Myriads of cases are available where individuals and institutions have been scammed and frauds committed through the social media. Security Issues Privacy of the people has been almost compromised. – Many security agencies have access to personal accounts of people. Which makes the masses to view Social Media as risky? These breakfast ideas will give you a natural beauty boost
T
here’s no denying that your diet plays an extremely important role in how you look and feel. The healthier food you put in your body, the more it reflects in your complexion. After all, as the saying goes: you are what you eat! That said, getting a healthy start to your day isn’t just to give you that energy boost you need to be at your best. Did you know that a good, wholesome breakfast can actually give you a beauty boost? Here are some simple ideas to try out for a beauty ritual that’s as delicious as it is satisfying! 1. Fruity fresh ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away’ is not a cliché for nothing. However, we recommend you switch it up for papaya. Fresh papaya with a spritz of lime first thing in the morning is a great way to start the day. It contains beneficial proteolytic enzymes that aren’t only known to aid digestion, but are also anti-inflammatory. Moreover, you can rub the papaya peal onto your skin as a gentle and completely natural way to exfoliate! 2. Acai berry breakfast bowl If you want a delicious way to load up on antioxidants, load up on acai berries. While a little hard to find, the results are truly worth the hunt. The antioxidants in this wholesome breakfast will protect your skin against free radicals, and combat premature ageing. Moreover, acai is favoured for its anti-inflammatory properties, and is rich in a host of nutrients like calcium, vitamin A, phosphorus, iron, and thiamine. 3. Chia seeds pudding Perhaps an ideal breakfast in these hot months, chia seeds aren’t only a great began alternative, they’re a great source of omega 3 fatty acids, that help keep the skin plump, hydrated and smooth. Moreover, it’s a great booster for those suffering from inflammatory skin conditions such as acne and eczema. If that’s not all, chia seeds are rich in silica which aids the formation of connective tissue, and is therefore essential for hair, skin, and nails. 4. Egg-cellent idea Eggs have invariably remained a breakfast staple the world over, with various ways to cook and savour this everyday ingredient. And as delicious as eggs may be, getting creative with your recipes can only serve to be that pick-me-up you need. For starters, eggs are an excellent source of protein. Including protein in the morning will keep blood sugar levels steady and won’t negatively impact your hormones. They also help boost the production of collagen, and are a good dietary source of vitamin D. Courtesy: FILMFARE

Many Congratulations to KAL DOSANJH for receiving the BHARAT SAMMAN AWARD in ENGLAND!
Photo with: Nadir PATEL, Canadian high commissioner to India and Janice Charette, Canadian high commissioner to the UK With over 17 years of law enforcement experience with the Vancouver Police Department, Dosanjh served in one of North America’s most challenging and violent environments, the Downtown Eastside for approximately 8 years. As 1 of the 15 officers of the Beat Enforcement Team responsible for policing Downtime Eastside, Dosanjh also appeared on the second season of the hit reality series, The Beat. The dangerous environment, the open air drug market, and the constant exposure to extreme risk, was the premise behind the series, which followed Dosanjh in action on the streets as he responded to calls of homicides, robberies, serious assaults, and dealings with violent drug dealers, gang members and individuals suffering from mental health issues.
His work in the Downtown Eastside, and the steady proliferation of youth entering the open air drug market, became the basis for ratifying and implementing programs for youth under the umbrella of the police athletic league. The programs focused on providing youth constructive outlets through the portal of sports. This served as the genesis in the founding of Kids Play Foundation, a non-profit organization committed towards keeping kids away from the lifestyle of drugs, gangs, and violence, by reinforcing a sense of belonging and self-worth. Thus far, with 500 members,
spearheading over 60 projects and 140 events, Kids Play has impacted over 40,000 youth through free programs and scholarships since its inception in 2015. The bedrock and fundamental principle of these programs is to establish a rapport with the youth through the medium of sports. Organized sports are being used throughout the world as a dynamic mechanism to engage youth of all races, genders, and classes. Through the initiative of providing the youth with an opportunity to play in organized sports tournaments, Kids Play strives to bridge a gap between the youth and adults in a constructive manner. In doing so, providing young people with a positive identity and feelings of empowerment, whilst simultaneously developing sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork and self governance skills. A former VP of the BC Human Rights Coalition, Dosanjh has garnered numerous commendations, community leadership awards and accolades for his contributions in policing and towards bridging a gap in barriers faced by the community youth through the Kids Play initiative. Ultimately, as a prominent and influential leader, the impact of Dosanjh’s community service has initiated a movement in BC, and other parts of Canada, and the ripple effects of which are being felt globally.

FLU ( INFLUENZA) Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC
FLU Winter is around and so is the Flu Season In Canada Flu related admissions to hospital is about 13,000 and about 3500 deaths each year We can prevent it by Simple Measures and of course the Flu Shot Let us Learn Some aspects of Flu ( Influenza ). Influenza is a viral infection that attacks your respiratory system — your nose, throat and lungs. Influenza is commonly called the flu, but it’s not the same as stomach “flu” viruses that cause diarrhea and vomiting. For most people, influenza resolves on its own. But sometimes, influenza and its complications can be deadly. People at higher risk of developing flu complications include: • Young children under age 5, and especially those under 2 years • Adults older than age 65 • Residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities • Pregnant women and women up to two weeks postpartum • People with weakened immune systems • People who have chronic illnesses, such as asthma, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease and diabetes • People who are very obese, with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher Though the annual influenza vaccine isn’t 100 percent effective, it’s still your best defense against the flu. Symptoms Initially, the flu may seem like a common cold with a runny nose, sneezing and sore throat. But colds usually develop slowly, whereas the flu tends to come on suddenly. And although a cold can be a nuisance, you usually feel much worse with the flu. Common signs and symptoms of the flu include: • Fever over 100.4 F (38 C) • Aching muscles • Chills and sweats • Headache • Dry, persistent cough
48
NOVEMBER 2018
• F atigue and weakness •N asal congestion • S ore throat When to see a doctor Most people who get the flu can treat themselves at home and often don’t need to see a doctor. If you have flu symptoms and are at risk of complications, see your doctor right away. Taking antiviral drugs within the first 48 hours after you first notice symptoms may reduce the length of your illness and help prevent more-serious problems. Causes Flu viruses travel through the air in droplets when someone with the infection coughs, sneezes or talks. You can inhale the droplets directly, or you can pick up the germs from an object — such as a telephone or computer keyboard — and then transfer them to your eyes, nose or mouth. People with the virus are likely contagious from the day or so before symptoms first appear until about five days after symptoms begin. Children and people with weakened immune systems may be contagious for a slightly longer time. Influenza viruses are constantly changing, with new strains appearing regularly. If you’ve had influenza in the past, your body has already made antibodies to fight that particular strain of the virus. If future influenza viruses are similar to those you’ve encountered before, either by having the disease or by vaccination, those antibodies may prevent infection or lessen its severity. But antibodies against flu viruses you’ve encountered in the past can’t protect you from new influenza subtypes that can be very different immunologically from what you had before. Complications If you’re young and healthy, sea-
sonal influenza usually isn’t serious. Although you may feel miserable while you have it, the flu usually goes away in a week or two with no lasting effects. But highrisk children and adults may develop complications such as: •P neumonia • Bronchitis • Asthma flare-ups • Heart problems • Ear infections Pneumonia is the most serious complication. For older adults and people with a chronic illness, pneumonia can be deadly. Controlling the spread of infection The influenza vaccine isn’t 100 percent effective, so it’s also important to take measures such as these to reduce the spread of infection: Wash your hands. Thorough and frequent hand-washing is an effective way to prevent many common infections. Or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers if soap and water aren’t readily available. Contain your coughs and sneezes. Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough. To avoid contaminating your hands, cough or sneeze into a tissue or into the inner crook of your elbow. Avoid crowds. Flu spreads easily wherever people congregate — in child care centers, schools, office buildings, auditoriums and public transportation. By avoiding crowds during peak flu season, you reduce your chances of infection. And if you’re sick, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever subsides so that you lessen your chance of infecting others. Diagnosis Your doctor will conduct a physical exam, look for signs and symptoms of influenza, and possibly order a test that detects influenza viruses. The most commonly used test is called a rapid influenza diagnostics test, which looks for substances (antigens) on a swab sample from
the back of the nose or throat. These tests can provide results in about 15 minutes. However, results vary greatly and are not always accurate. Your doctor may diagnose you with influenza based on symptoms, despite having a negative test result. Treatment Usually, you’ll need nothing more than bed rest and plenty of fluids to treat the flu. But in some cases, your doctor may prescribe an antiviral medication, such as oseltamivir (Tamiflu) If taken soon after you notice symptoms, these drugs may shorten your illness by a day or so and help prevent serious complications. Antiviral medication side effects may include nausea and vomiting. These side effects may be lessened if the drug is taken with food. Oseltamivir has also been associated with delirium and self-harm behaviors in teenagers. Lifestyle and home remedies If you do come down with the flu, these measures may help ease your symptoms: Drink plenty of liquids. Choose water, juice and warm soups to prevent dehydration. Rest. Get more sleep to help your immune system fight infection. Consider pain relievers. Use an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others), to combat the achiness associated with influenza. Use caution when giving aspirin to children or teens because of the risk of Reye’s syndrome, a rare but potentially fatal condition. To help control the spread of influenza in your community, stay home and keep sick children home until fever has been gone for 24 hours For further information Consult your Doctor or visit the Flu Clinic bear you.

5 mood-boosting foods to include in your diet W orking long hours under stress and eating irregularly and mindlessly can lead to depression. So make sure you are eating right, say experts. The road to a happier you is right nutrition and mindful eating as well as staying away from too much of caffeine and sugar, suggests Rueben Ghosh, co-founder and culinary director at Yumlane, and Kashmiri Barkakati, food expert at Momspresso. Type of people we should not deal with….
Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Health Coach of University of Victoria
W
e all understand that, how it feels like to be criticized/ disliked by someone. That’s why we deal people with the greatest degree of empathy [ not sympathy] and compassion in our hearts. But sometimes we come across a situation where we realize that we need to be more selective in our dealing with others. We cannot just let everyone into our lives. We cannot allow everyone to be in our comfort zone. We need healthy boundaries. I hope you agree with me, dear reader. Biologically, we are hardwired to remain connected with our close friends, relatives et al. We do our best to avoid relationship breakdown. The inherent primitive fear of rejection and abandonment is what motivates us to deal every relationship carefully. The million-dollar question is, on the evermoving carousel of time, we have to seriously re-evaluate some relationships in our lives. Here is the type of people, we need to review and mark a delete, if need be: The people can not trust any longer: For the relationship to work, as desired, there must be a level of trust present on reciprocal basis. There is no point in sharing with a close person, in case the subject matter will not remain confidential. To feel secure in any relationship, a person must have qualified to be absolutely confidential, to truly keep a secret, the expressed deepest thoughts, feelings, and life experiences. On time front, at some point, we’ve all had our trust tested in a relationship. Maybe our best friend revealed something confidential and we spilled the beans and that resulted in damaged reputation. In such circumstances we start feeling ill-at-ease. A lack of trust is indeed a real barrier to a genuine and authentic connection. A wise and prudent person always mark a delete on a person who violates his trust. I always feel firmly that I have the right to feel safe in my friendships/ relationships with others. The people who do not respect us as a hu-
Love the person, a creation of God, but hate the bad behaviour in him/her. Forgive the mistakes of other people, but always expect improvement from the other side. If, there is, no improvement in a reasonable period, then the time is ripe to mark a delete on such a person. I will say better alone, than in a bad company.

Stay away from people, who are habitual criticizers and are always on a fault-findingmission. They are an incurably negative lot. In case you decide to continue with them, your own reputation may be affected. Always remember, one is known by the company one keeps. man being: Rightfully, they say, a man is a social animal. We all are socialized in certain ways of our own. We all have our own level of comfort zone. We have our own likes and dislikes. We have our own preferences. Those who do not respect your feelings, viewpoint in general- have no business to be around you. If a person respect others’ bodily autonomy, caste, color, creed, ethnicity and culture, that is a likable person, in my point of view. If anyone cannot respect that I am a human being with my own desires and needs, I do not have a place for such people in my life. If such a person cannot respect my ability to make my own choices, then polite no will be my answer. Though the boundaries are incredibly hard to set. The ways we interact with each other, depend on our culture and our upbringing always influence our behaviour. We all make mistakes. Others forgive us and so we should also do. This way, we can build healthy boundaries that respect everyone involved. The people who always make us feel guilty: There are always some people in the society ,we move ,who make us feel guilty about something. It is natural for us to feel uncomfortable. We feel like we need to explain to ourselves, and apologize, even when we are not in the wrong. Such type of people plays dirty and they think it is our job to please them. Guilt can be a useful emotion—it tells us when we have done something wrong—but when we are in a relationship with someone who constantly has us feeling like we aren’t good enough, it can drain our energy and hurt our selfesteem. An injured self-esteem opens an exit door for the relationship to ed in near future. The people who are not flexible: We all have our habits, which are not easy to change. Likewise, when those around us
have been stuck in the same bad habits for years in succession, it is an indicator that something is wrong. There are times when friends, family members and partners get into tacky situations, and they seek our help. It’s normal to lend a helping hand when someone is in need, but there we need to draw the line. We can only help someone who wants to help themselves. Many people have a way of saying that they want to change, but their actions tell us otherwise. Maybe they always say how miserable and unhappy they are, but instead of trying to solve the problem, they would rather sit on the couch and engage in Social Media, all day. Nobody is required to be happy and positive all the time, and it is important to honor and process our negative feelings and experiences. But some people seem to thrive on the drama, and at a certain point, we must admit it is important to take care of our own well-being first. The people who only show up when they need favor from us: Relationships thrive if they are based on the doctrine of reciprocity. In a healthy relationship, both sides share the good and bad happenings in their respective lives. They walk together, eat together whenever time permits. Such type of relationships always matters, because they load us with pleasure and happiness. The word of caution is for those selfish ones, who, approach us every time they need something. If they are going through a rough patch in their lives, they need to talk., otherwise they keep the door closed all the time. But when we need help or going through a rough patch, they are not there, Not There and NOT THERE. In such a scenario, I fervently feel, time is ripe to close the door and walk away. The selfish people: Recognizing if and when someone is being selfish in a relationship/friendship can be difficult, especially when it’s someone that’s close to you. Most of the people are good at heart, and we should give others also the benefit of the doubt. People who use and misuse others for personal gains are leeches, and they don’t care who it is they hurt. They are selfish by nature. The probable signs that your partner/ friend is taking advantage of you are as follows: • Everything happens on their terms and conditions • All the decisions regarding places you go, people you see, and things you do are too frequently theirs • Your ideas are quickly rebuffed or deliberately ignored • Most communication from such a person is negative, neutral and discouraging • They have contempt in their dealings, which result in relationship failure
we are hardwired with a longing to belong to others. Under the garb of selfishness, others, sometimes try to take advantage of our emotions; and more so show contempt also. Many relationship experts (e.g. scholars, therapists, counselors) have conclusively cited individual or mutual contempt is the best predictor of a relationship failure. • T hey exhibit a lack of effort very often which is a sign of disinterest or disengagement. • I f you’re pouring a disproportionate amount of time, money and energy into the relationship and they are not doing so on reciprocal basis, then something is wrong. • T hey are not ready to make your relationship a priority. • Y ou’ve seen them flirting with others. Physical lust is their priority Bottomline: Cutting ties with people we know or care about is a very difficult process. We long to hold the relationship with compassion because we know how difficult rejection can be. But we can’t let compassion turn us into a doormat for use or misuse by others. We have a right to feel safe and loved in our relationships. While it’s important to remember that we’re all human and make mistakes, if someone shows no signs of remorse or no willingness to reciprocate in our relationships, it might be time to let them go for ever. Always remember to have compassion for yourself first. You deserve respect. You are allowed to enforce your own boundaries. And once you do, you open the door for more positive, nourishing connections. Always remember that, “A relationship without sacrifice or compromise is not a real relationship.”
Our brain process rejection much like we handle physical pain. When we feel small or slighted, courtesyunmerited behaviour of others- our brain releases a chemical named endorphin [ a neurotransmitter-a painkiller], to heal our sufferings. It is always wise to give yourself time to heal from the unmerited firing and move on.” www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

Chloe Grace Moretz Says She Once Faced Career Crisis
A
ctor Chloe Grace Moretz has said that she went through career crisis a couple of years ago as she was contemplating what she should do next in her life. In an interview with The Telegraph, the 21-year-old actor said she reached a point where she had no idea about who she was. “I didn’t even know acting could be a job until I was about 13, ‘cause I saw it as like playtime. But then when I was 19, I had a moment of being like, whoa, I’m 19, I’ve done 50-something movies, what am I? Who am I? “I felt the flame that I’d had my entire life start to dwindle and that terrified me,” Moretz said. The actor said
she then decided to take time off from acting to reflect back. “I didn’t know what to do. It was the silence that I was unaware of, because I’d always been around so many people and then to just wake up and not have anything to do and know that there’s no meetings to go to, no script to read, was the most jarring, silent moment of my entire life. I realised in that moment that I’d never had quiet,” Moretz said. She will be next seen in Desiree Akhavan’s “The Miseducation of Cameron Post”, alongside John Gallagher Jr and Sasha Lane. You can keep your spinal cord perfectly straight while practicing this exercise in your office during the free time. • Stand straight in front of a wall by keeping your feet at a little distance from it. • Now, create a position as if you are sitting on a chair. Lean towards the wall and let your back touch the wall. But push your feet slightly away. • Hold the position as long as possible and then, relax. 4. Elbow to Knee It is another wonderful office exercise that offers great movement to our body and work directly on our abdominal muscles. • Sit erect on your chair and place both of your hands at the sides of your head. • Bend your entire body to the left side, while raising your left leg as well as bringing your right elbow up in the direction of your knee. • Stay in this position for 5 to 10 seconds and then relax. • Now, change the side and repeat the process again. 5. Praying Position It is one of the best desk exercises for arms that you can do anywhere and everywhere literally. • Sit straight on the chair with your feet lying flat on the floor. • Bring both of your palms towards your chest and place them together as if you are praying. • Push your hands outwards, while keeping the palms together. • Stay in this position for 10 to 20 seconds and then, relax. Western Home Decor – How to decorate your home in Western Style!
S
o if you are planning to decorate your home in Western style that too matching with your pocket and looking like you live in a barn ! There are some few tips to help on your way to a beautifully decorated Western style home. • Consult any good decorator that will tell you how to start by keeping a focus on inspiration piece. It can be of architectural designs like a special art piece, fireplace or any beautiful view. If in your mind there is any inspiration piece that you cannot purchase it right way, decorate that piece in mind and purchase when you can. • Start the decoration with the paint color : Dark color make a small room look smaller so before making a selection of color always keep in mind the size of the room. Western color themes are cactus greens, sunset reds, earthy browns, clay yellows and deep sky blues. Paint is the easiest, most affordable way to set the stage for western decorating throughout your home. • Start with small, choose several pieces of room that you like: If you are starting it with a bathroom, then start with a cabinet hardware. There are many types of cabinet knobs and hardware in old western styles equipped with a shotgun shells, equestrian style, barb wire, using Conchos western belts and other items seen in the Horse show ring. The best part about this is that all of these are available in rustic Western themes, featuring sculptures, iconic symbols, and ranch capes cowboys. Choose the style that you like the best and gradually make an addition of some quality pieces. Soap dishes and dispensers, containers for bath items, and necessities like linens, bath mats and shower curtains can all be used to enhance the western theme. Spend the most money on the things you touch like towels, rugs and bathroom accessories to create a feeling of luxury. Hang western art work or rustic signs on large blank spaces; frame the bathroom mirror with old barn wood. • Decorating the Bedroom: If you are decorating a bed room, then make use of the western style photo frames and some small knick knacks to bring the western touch to the room. Table tops and shelves give a great look to homes for wrought iron sculpture and small collectibles like spurs, Stirrups and wagon wheels. Cowhide rugs and pillows enhance the western scheme. Add character with western sculptures or items like horseshoes, stirrups and wagon wheels. • Put more concentration on the artwork: Simple way to incorporate the western décor is to put focus on the artwork. Framed artwork featuring western wildlife, pastoral ranch lives or a traditional cowboy culture put a great addition to any western room décor. • Always choose a comfort set in a color that you like the most and

make it your color inspiration: If your son loves horses a cow boys then make your inspiration piece a western comforter and choose
the color scheme as per that compliments it. You can also make use of accent wall to bring another color into the room. You can
use many different patterns and textures keeping in mind one color scheme it all works together. • Pick furniture that goes with the size of the room; don’t fill a room with furniture that overpowers it. Personalize it to make is special with his/her name in rope or engraved it on a wall with other western shapes. • When you are making a transformation of your living room then start with the furniture: Always choose furniture that is large over stuffed with chairs and sofas. Tables can be rustic using reclaimed wood or iron. Lamps can be unique, made with horseshoes, driftwood, stirrups, spurs or anything your imagination can come up with. Courtesy: SWIRLSTER

How to Help Students Believe in Themselves N
ew research on hope suggests that believing that you “can” is critical to success. “She’s just going to be a maid
anyway.” This was the reason given to me by a fifth grade teacher as to why I, a student teacher at the time, shouldn’t give extra help to a child who was working hard to improve her reading. Once my shock at this disturbing statement wore off, I realized that the teacher’s beliefs and assumptions were potentially jeopardizing the quality of life and future aspirations of this student. Bar none, reading skills are essential to life. And while there is absolutely nothing wrong with domestic work, what if this student wanted to become a cancer researcher or an airline pilot or a Pixar animator? As educators, the most important—and rewarding—part of our work is to recognize the vast potential within our students and to help them see it within themselves, and then support them in reaching that potential. “She’s just going to be a maid anyway.” This was the reason given to me by a fifth grade teacher as to why I, a student teacher at the time, shouldn’t give extra help to a child who was working hard to improve her reading. In other words, we need to help them cultivate hope.
What is hope? Researchers have taken hope, a somewhat ephemeral concept, and made it practical. Hope is about one’s ability to achieve goals. It has been linked to greater academic achievement, creativity, and problem-solving skills, as well as less depression and anxiety. Hope requires two components: pathways and agency. A “pathway” is a roadmap to reaching a goal, one that is created by the student and that includes alternate routes when obstacles arise. “Agency” is the student’s belief, motivation, and confidence that he or she can achieve the goal. While both pathways and agency are central to hope, new research being published soon by the journal Learning and Individual Differences suggests that agency might be the more critical part of the equation. Dante Dixson and his co-authors found that “high hopers” (students high in agency and pathways) and “high agency thinkers” (students high in agency, but low in pathways) had better academic and psychological outcomes, including the belief about their chances of success in the future, when compared to “low hopers” (students low in agency and pathways) and “high pathway thinkers” (students high in pathways, but low in agency). Travel in Mauritius: Moniker of Paradise
Islands
Mauritius is a volcanic island nation situated in the Indian Ocean, famous for its beaches, lagoons and reefs. The mountainous interior encompasses Black River Gorges National Park, with rainforests, waterfalls, hiking trails and native fauna like the flying fox. The capital, Port Louis, blends foreign influences and offers sites such as the Champs de Mars horse track, colonial Eureka plantation and 18th-century botanical garden.

or every person who is activity lover, visiting Mauritius is one of the best options. The best part about this place is just thatit is tiny. This means that you can easily travel from one end to other easily in a little more than two hours by the car. For adventure in Mauritius there are lots of choices ranging from plethora of water sports to land activities such as scuba diving, sunrise cruise, kite skurfing and many more. If you will come back without making an experience of these activities, visiting that place will be waste of time and money both. All these activities are the main attractions of Mauritius.
Activities are:
Walking with the lions: There is plenty to do at the ‘The Casela World adventure’, it is an amusement park where you explore quad bikes, Zip lines, Segway rides, safaris, Canyon and the list goes on. The best here is walking with the lions-an opportunity for you to be in close proximity to the majestic animal. One catch: these activities allowed only for the people who are aged 15 and above. The other absolute with the young one is the Petting farm where you can feed deer and rabbits. It also houses animals such as ostriches and wallabies.
