Remembering the lost

heroes Celebrated throughout Canada, Remembrance Day or the Armistice Day, is observed on the 11th day of November, annually.

R

emembrance Day commemorates those who died in armed conflicts. It marks the end of hostilities during the First World War and an opportunity to recall all those who have served in the nation’s defence. And, to pay our respect to the lost souls, this day is celebrated throughout the country with a great fervor.

local memorials, but observances involved few other Canadians.

In 1928, some prominent citizens, many of them veterans, pushed for greater recognition and to separate the remembrance of wartime sacrifice from the Thanksgiving holiday. In 1931, the federal government decreed that the newly named Remembrance Day would be observed on How it all started 11 November and moved Armistice Day was inaugurated Thanksgiving Day to a different in 1919 throughout much of date. and small across the country. It remained a day to honor the fallen, but traditional services also witnessed occasional calls to remember the horror of war and to embrace peace. Remembrance Day ceremonies were usually held at community cenotaphs and war memorials, or sometimes at schools or in other public places. Two minutes of silence, the playing of the Last Post, the recitation of In Flanders Fields, and the wearing of poppies quickly became associated with the ceremony. Remembrance Day has since gone through periods of intense observation and periodic decline. The 50th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in 1995 marked a noticeable upsurge of public interest, which has not ebbed in recent years. It is now a

national holiday for federal and many provincial government workers, and the largest ceremonies are attended in major cities by tens of thousands. The ceremony at the National War Memorial in Ottawa is nationally televised, while most media outlets – including newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations, and internet sources – run special features, interviews, or investigative reports on military history or remembrance-related themes. You’ll Have Fewer Orthodontic Visits We love seeing our patients’ smiling faces when they come through our doors. But let’s be honest, nobody really likes to go to the orthodontist. With braces, you have to see your doctor every month to get your brackets tightened. With Invisalign Teen, you’ll switch to a new set of aligners every two weeks at home, no adjustments needed. You only have to visit your orthodontist every 6 weeks or so, and appointments are much shorter, so you can spend more time doing what you love.

6. See Your New Smile Every Step of the Way The hardest part of going through any orthodontic treatment is the waiting game. You know what you want your new smile to look like, but you have to wait until treatment ends to see the real results, right? Not with Invisalign Teen! Our iTero scanner has a tool called the Invisalign Outcome Simulator, which reveals the new you before you even get started. You can also use the Invisalign smartphone app to get a peek at your new smile all throughout your treatment. 7. Invisalign is Super Comfortable A major downside to traditional braces is that they can be uncomfortable; the brackets and wires can irritate your lips and the inside of your mouth. Orthodontic wax can help alleviate discomfort but it can only do so much. Invisalign aligners, on the other hand, are smooth, flexible and completely formed to your teeth. They’re so comfortable you’ll forget you’re even wearing them! 8. Invisalign Costs the Same as Braces Parents, this one’s for you. Despite common misconceptions, Invisalign Teen costs pretty much the same as braces, so you don’t have to worry about spending extra cash for a more discreet teeth straightening treatment. 9. Length of Treatment is the Same as Braces People often think that treatment with Invisalign will take a lot longer than with braces, but that’s simply not true. No two mouths are the same, so the length of any orthodontic treatment varies from person to person. That said, the average treatment with either braces or Invisalign is about a year. 10. Vaping:

The good, bad and the ugly

Cigarettes have been used for a long time and we all know its’ association with lung cancer and several other diseases. With the advent of technology, e-cigarettes were made as a step down to someone choosing to stop smoking. Over the period of time these device became fancier and easily available to teens, also the liquids came in candy, menthol, fruit and spice flavors along with nicotine and THC oils, which made the consumption rise even more.

D

The news channels across the world are giving a lot of coverage to a new epidemic that has been linked with taking many lives, recently. At least 18 deaths and more than 1,000 cases of a mysterious lung illness have been linked with vaping by the US health authorities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said cases are on a rise and they may be more cases coming to light as vaping remains a fad amidst the youngsters.

octors have been unable to establish what is causing the illness, whose symptoms include chest pain, fatigue and shortness of breath. Recently published information from various sources suggests a chemical injury to lungs associated with marked inflammation.

It may appear to be a chemical warfare against lungs.

What is vaping? Vaping is the inhaling of a vapor created by an electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) or other vaping device. E-cigarettes are battery-powered smoking devices. They have cartridges filled with a liquid that usually contains nicotine, flavorings, and chemicals. The liquid is heated into a vapor, which the person inhales and that is why using e-cigarettes is called “vaping”.

What are the health effects of vaping? Vaping hasn’t been around long enough for us to know how it affects the body over time. But health experts are reporting serious lung damage in people who vape, including some deaths.

Dr Anne Schuchat from the CDC said the outbreak was expected to continue. “I cannot stress enough the seriousness of these injuries. This is a critical issue. We need to take steps to prevent additional cases”.

Vaping puts nicotine into the body. Nicotine is highly addictive and can:

Investigators have not linked the illnesses to any particular product or compound, but they say that vaping oils containing THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, pose a greater risk. Last month, the CDC advised people to stop using vaping products, or e-cigarettes, regardless of whether they contain nicotine or marijuana.

E-cigarettes also:

Some US states, most recently Massachusetts, have moved to ban vaping altogether until its health effects are better understood. Several countries such as India, Japan & 25 more have implemented a total ban on all Vaping devices and products. In Canada 2 cases of lung disease with vaping were reported needing ventilation and ICU care, both were lucky to survive and are on treatment at home now.

4 Slow brain development in teens and affect memory, concentration, learning, self-control, attention, and mood 4Increase the risk of other types of addictions later in life

4Irritate the lungs 4May cause serious lung damage and even death 4Can lead to use other forms of tobacco products Some people use e-cigarettes to vape THC oil, and other dangerous chemicals. Besides irritating the lungs, these drugs also affect how someone thinks, acts, and a person’s mood also.

Do I have to vape every day to get addicted? Even if you don’t vape every day, you can still get addicted. How quickly someone gets addicted varies. Some people get addicted even if they don’t vape every day. Cont. in next edition

RESP: A UNIQUE INVESTMENT TOOL FOR YOUR CHILD’S FUTURE

B

eing parents, we are concerned about the future of our children. We want them to receive the best education and become well-settled in their lives. As the cost of higher education is one of the main expenses, it’s important that you start investing for your child’s education when they are young. This will save you from any unwanted financial worries when they are ready for their education. The government of Canada has designed Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) which helps you to accumulate funds for your child’s post-secondary education. The subscriber has to contribute monthly through pre-authorized payments until December 31 of the year in which the designated beneficiary at issue reaches age 17. At the end of the commitment period, your total payout is paid as Educational Assistance Payments (EAP). If you have a Canadian address with a valid SIN number, you can enrol in the Diploma RESP. When you enrol, you need to designate a beneficiary who should be a child of age 14, or under, who will receive the educational assistance payments when pursuing post-secondary studies. He/she needs to be a Canadian resident with a SIN number. Your child can be made beneficiary of more than one RESP. It is important to note that after December 31 of the 31st calendar year following the plan’s creation, no contributions can be made. Also, the plan must cease to exist no later than December 31 of the 35th year following the plan’s creation. The federal government allows you to contribute up to a maximum limit of $50,000 per beneficiary for life while there is no annual limit on contribution towards the www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

plan. You can contribute by monthly deposits, additional deposits and RESP transfers from another institution in the contribution period from January 1 to December 31. The great feature of the plan is that since it has been specially created by the government for postsecondary educational support of students, the government contributes grant to the investment which is called the Canada Education Saving Grant (CESG). It was implemented by the federal government in January 1998. The basic CESG is equal to 20% of the first $2,500 ($2,000 before 2007) of annual contributions made to a beneficiary’s RESP.

interest paid on a loan taken out to make RESP contributions. RESP is a wonderful plan which enables you to save for the educational future of your child in a planned manner. As an independent insurance advisor working through Punjab Insurance Agency, I deal with different insurance companies offering plans for different types of insurance. I can explain to you in detail, the insurance plan options and coverage that are suitable as per your needs. Besides, I can also help you

to purchase mortgage insurance, super visa insurance, disability insurance, critical illness insurance, extended medical plans, group medical plans, RESP, RRSP, travel insurance, TFSA accounts, health and dental plans along with estate planning. In 2005, the government enhanced the program by providing an additional grant based on the parents’ family income. To further help low income families to save for their children’s post-secondary study, the government offers another grant namely Canada Learning Bond (CLB). Eligible parents get $500 in the first year and, $100 in each subsequent year of eligibility until the child reaches 15 years of age. The cumulative limit of CLB offered to a child can therefore reach $2,000. To be eligible, the beneficiary must be a resident of Canada born after December 31, 2003 with a valid social insurance number(SIN). Besides, provincial governments also pay grants to eligible families under the RESP program. Tax Implications The contributions made to subscriber’s RESP are not tax deductible from his income. However, the investment income is tax-free as long as it remains in the plan. Also, the subscriber may not deduct from his/her income NOVEMBER 2019

Stop the stigma! You may have to fight a battle more than once.

M

ental health issues are still fairly stigmatized in South Asian communities. A mental health illness is not a sign of weakness. These are just like any other health issue one may suffer from and needs equal attention. An effort to create awareness about mental health, an event was organized on October 18. Inception Dinner & Dance Gala, an effort by the

Atrium Group, AMG Productions and BM Group was a huge hit. There was dance, music and a lot of amazing live performances. The proceeds from the event are given to the Alzheimer Society Of British Columbia. Such efforts by the community members are making a huge impact on the upliftment of the society. May such endeavors continue to grow and shine.

Brachycephalic syndrome:

Obstructing your furry friends’ breathing Dr. Hakam Bhullar (DVM)

T

his month’s issue we have dedicated towards our beloved breeds: Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Pugs, Pekingese, Boxers, Shar-Peis, Lhasas and Apsos. If you are the proud owner of any of these listed breeds, then you may wish to pay close attention to this. How did this condition develop and why is it in your dog’s breed? This condition was not a natural disorder to occur. It is the result of an evolutionary process that we have created by wishing to breed flat-faced, small, tiny dogs. Despite the level of cuteness that we may have achieved in this process, we have actually caused new abnormalities for these dogs to face in their lifetime. These abnormalities in return have a large toll on the quality of life that these patients experience. The breeds mentioned above are known as ‘Brachycephalic Breeds’; hence, they may develop ‘Brachycephalic Syndrome’. Brachycephalic syndrome consists of four different conditions that make up this syndrome altogether. These conditions are: Stenotic nares, elongated soft palate, hypoplastic trachea and everted laryngeal saccules. Stenotic nares and elongated soft palates can also be seen in certain cat breeds, such as: Persians and Himalayans. Stenotic nares is a condition in which you can see very narrow nostrils on your dog. Elongated soft palate is when you will notice breathing issues occur in your dog, due to his breathing opening (larynx) being blocked by a very long soft palate developing naturally from birth. Hypoplastic trachea is narrowing of the trachea. These three conditions can develop naturally from birth,

14

NOVEMBER 2019

known as congenital problems. Last, but not least, is everted laryngeal saccules, which is not from birth, however occurs due to continuous increased respiratory effort. Signs you may notice occurring with this syndrome are: gagging, difficulty in breathing, collapse, respiratory disease, not wishing to exercise, open mouth breathing, very loud breathing and in worst cases – aspiration pneumonia. If you notice any of these signs in your dog, please take him or her to your local veterinarian immediately for appropriate care. Once you bring your furry companion to your vet, he will perform a full, physical examination. Afterwards he may wish to run some thoracic radiographs and even perform an oral examination once placing your pet under anesthesia. In regards to elongated soft palate, everted laryngeal saccules and stenotic nares, the treatment protocol mainly consists of surgical procedures to correct the conditions. Unfortunately hypoplastic trachea does not have any effective treatment in place as of yet, however research proves that if you are able to successfully fix all other underlying issues then it is still manageable for the patient to live with this remaining condition. However, a hypoplastic trachea normally occurs when Brachycephalic syndrome has reached its more advanced stages.

Everything about Radial Shockwave Therapy

S

hockwave therapy is a technique used in physiotherapy, veterinary medicine, orthopedics, urology, and sports medicine. It helps in the restoration of mobility and provides instant relief. It helps in speedy recovery of the patient even without the intake of pain killers. The therapy involves the areas to be treated by mechanical shockwaves (not electric), which heals the tissues. As the body responds to these shockwaves by improving the circulation of blood in those areas which leads to quicker healing. These shockwaves lead to the breakdown of the injured tissues and eventually helps in the growth and development of the finer tissues. Research suggests that there are two main advantages of the shockwave therapy over other programs: helps in way faster recovery and has negligible complications.

Advantages of Shockwave Therapy: 4No anesthesia 4 Fast treatment: only 15 minutes per session (maximum of 4 sessions are required) 4 Non-invasive

4Fewer complications 4No medication 4 Proper result is seen 6-8 weeks after treatment 4No surgery 4No pain after treatment Also See: Best way to avoid knee pain using Physiotherapy

How Shockwave Therapy works? Shockwave comprises of a wave carrying high energy to the painful spots and injured tissues. This energy helps in the reparative procedure and regeneration of the tissues. Shockwaves have high amplitude, jump change in pressure, and non-periodicity. This energy is created by compressed air and passed on to the transmitter that is present at the other edge of the applicator and then to the tissue. 4 The shockwave is applied to the tissue with the help of compressed air impulse that is exerted by a handpiece. 4 The shockwave radiates out and extends to the affected area. 4 Generally, 3 sessions are sufficient to heal the tissues. 4 Each session nearly lasts for 10-15 minutes. 4 Anaesthetic is not needed; one can be free to live well with their day to day activities. One should avoid pain provoking exercises for at least 2 days after the treatment.) 4 Surgery or alternate therapy is not required; the treatment may start straight away.

Medical Effects of Shockwave Therapy: The high amplitude shockwaves have overall medical effects by healing the injured tissues, repairing the tissues, helping in cell growth and restoring the mobility. Mentioned below are some effects of the shock wave therapy.

16

NOVEMBER 2019

4 New Blood Vessel Formation: The shockwave therapy helps in the formation of new blood vessels that help in providing oxygenated blood and nutrients to the affected area, which helps in effective treatment of the area. 4 Substance P | Dispersion of Pain Mediator: The shockwave therapy decreases the concentration of the neurotransmitter called “Substance P” in the affected area. “Substance P” is a pain mediator, it increases the amount of pain in the area. 4 Reversal of Chronic Inflammation: Chronic Inflammation results in the damage of healthy tissues as well. The shockwave therapy halts the inflammatory response 4 Dissolution of Calcified Fibroblasts: As a result of tearing of the tissues, calcium starts to build up. The shockwave removes this calcium build-up, this is called decalcification and helps in repairing of the tendons. 4 Release of Trigger Points: The discomfort in the shoulder, neck, limbs, and back are caused mainly due to trigger points. The waste is build-up due to these trigger points. The shockwave therapy eliminates the waste buildup that may have led to contractions and severe pain. 4 Stimulation of Collagen Production: The production of enough quantity of collagen is important to repair the damaged ligamentous structures and myoskeletal structures. Procollagen synthesis is accelerated by shockwave therapy. The shockwave therapy forces the newly produced collagen fibers into a longitudinal structure which makes the newly formed tendon fibers dense and stiff that eventually creates a firm structure. How can a falling-apart marriage

be fixed? I

t can be utterly painful to see a relationship that was once fruitful and blooming become unhealthy and toxic.

There comes a point when a marriage seems irredeemable and to fix it or to abandon it depends entirely upon those involved. However, with conviction and hard work, you can make any relationship work. Here are some steps to take when your marriage hits the rocks to ensure you survive the turbulence and come out as a stronger couple. 1. Work on problems immediately When you see that you are fighting constantly, this should not be ignored. The constant bickering is a sign of a deeper underlying problem: stress from work, passing away of a parent, discomfort due to injury, or other issues. Arguments are a healthy and natural way to express yourself, but when the people involved start attacking each other instead of the disagreements they are having, you need to look closely to assess why such

behavior might be occurring in an otherwise safe space. 2. Hire a professional for help To seek assistance from a psychologist or marriage counselor is the sign of a strong will to be together and work out the issues you have. Needless to say, the desire to be together and support the partner is much more important in a marriage than a need for comfort.

relationship, you must not give in to this soothing temptation and instead remember the future you want to create for your relationship.

A professional can help you look at your personal issues in a new light and enable you to understand your behavioral patterns. Furthermore, they can help you find a middle ground for issues that you otherwise cannot find solutions to and end up arguing about all the time.

This allows you to forgive and forget what is irrelevant to the creation of that future, and allows you to realign your goals with your partner so you can find something to do collectively with a shared goal in mind.

3. Focus on the future you want to create

The little things your partner does seem to disappear as you get used to them holding open doors for you and cooking eggs for breakfast every weekend. These habits are easily forgotten

When things get difficult, it can be tempting to make a run for the hills. The arguments, disagreements, distrust and jealousy, all create an environment that is emotionally and physically draining. In order to sustain your

4. Remember why you fell in love in the first place

as you get used to them and start to take them for granted. However, to save your relationship you must put in the effort to recount the little things they did for you, and why you developed such passionate feelings for them that you decided to get married. 5. Improve yourself and everything will follow suit It is easy to blame all issues on the other person due to simple coping mechanisms. To be mature requires you to take responsibility for your actions, and address the pain you have caused even when you did not intend to. Rekindling love is not a matter of chance, but rather an active choice you have to make in order to fix your marriage. Ritika Tiwari Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist

Basant Motors continues to give back to the society

B

asant Motor celebrated their 28th Anniversary with a generous and noble effort on October 5, 2019 in Surrey. The organization distributed a total of $28,000 worth scholarships to 14 bright students at an impressive ceremony organized by S Baldev Singh Bath, the founder of Basant Motors along with his staff members. Basant Motors may be thought of by thousands of satisfied clients as a premier pre-owned auto dealer; but increasingly to parents and teachers it’s also viewed as a major supporter of excellence in education. “Several hundred people attended the event along with the recipients, and we were honored to present the scholarships because excellence is something we strive for and encourage in others”, said Jas Koonar, Basant’s Operations Manager. The scholarships are becoming a highly-anticipated annual event for regional school systems. Baldev Singh Bath feels that the success of his business was due to

20

NOVEMBER 2019

support from the community and hence, he came up with the idea to stage a scholarship contest in conjunction with Basant’s 25th anniversary in 2016. During that ceremony, $15,000 was awarded to six students who had been selected from several hundred applicants by a fivepanel committee of teachers. The following year, 350 students from across Metro Vancouver applied for $26,000 in scholarships (10 of whom were chosen as recipients), and Amrit Bath, Basant’s General Manager, noted at the time, “We’ll increase the scholarships by $1,000 annually and down the road add more student recipients.” As expected, this October’s ceremony was the biggest yet with many notable presenters including, but not limited to, Neil Dubord,

the chief constable for the Delta Police, and Anita Huberman, the CEO of the Surrey Board of Trade. The scholarships are not the only way Basant gives back to the community. Last year it staged Basant’s Cars for Compassion contest, which awarded Karen Moraes a free 2017 Nissan Sentra for her tireless volunteer efforts. In years past, the dealership became involved in a diabetes fundraiser that generated $70,000 to help combat the disease. But the scholarships remain the most prominent outcome of Bath’s commitment to make philanthropy an integral part of his business, and his staff members are already looking forward to the 2020 event.

7 beauty trends you need to know this

winter

A

s winter approaches fast, it is time to get the wardrobe ready as per the hottest trends of Fall. If you are confused about what statements to make and how to avoid fashion blunders, here is a list of the most acclaimed fashion trends that you have to live by this season.

1. Bright eyelids This look is being dubbed ‘Disco Eyes’ by the industry celebs, but it is nothing more than bright monochrome lids without any glitter or eyeliner. This is the easiest look to replicate, as all you need is a brightly colored eye shadow. Blend the shadow seamlessly with your finger, and you are ready to walk the runway!

2. Glowing skin Gone are the days of matte foundations and full coverage cakey looks; right now the focus is on healthy looking skin which has a natural finish and radiant shine. Avoid using a lot of foundation, and focus on evening out the texture and complexion. Switch to a concealer for areas you need better coverage in instead of using a heavy duty foundation. Minimally powder the face for a glossy, glass-like appearance to

the skin.

3. Shoulder pads Runways recycle trends, and this once-loved favorite is back. It is time to ask your mum if she has a jacket in the back from the 80’s, because shoulder pads are all the rage now. The appearance that padded shoulders give you is of extreme confidence. Mix this shape with prints of your choice and rock the show.

4. Statement red lip An ageless look, this one is more trendy than ever this season. Not only is the fashion world studded with bright red lips, it is also experimenting with shades of red and mixing it with oranges and plums for unique and out of the box looks. The best part of a red lip is that it suits everyone when done with the right shade, and with this bold lip you do not need any other accessories or make up.

5. Punk eyeliner The punk eyeliner includes bold wings extending out to the side of the face and thick round eyes completed on both upper and lower lash lines. It can be further adorned with crystals to make it

glamorous, or smoked out to look even more sultry. With eyes this bold, it is advised to keep the lips nude or minimally glossed.

6. Cruella de Vil style capes The Dalmatian cape coat that Cruella de Vil wanted was a moment in fashion history, and inspired endless looks and designs. The statement look of the long cape coat is a result of its sharp shape that takes over the silhouettes of the body and creates straight lines extending straight from the shoulder to the calves, and is perfect for the Fall weather.

7. Faux-fur and feathers Harsh winters call for fluffy and warm clothing that keeps you warm and looks inviting, and faux-fur and feathers do exactly that. While synthetic fibers usually fail to keep you warm, the multiple layers of this look keep you warm. Not only is this look super chic, it is also functional. The simple trends of fashion are always subject to your interpretation and your desire to experiment. When it comes to fashion, always remember that you make the rules.

Winter wardrobe

ready!

As the weather gets chilly, we pull out the heaviest of our clothing. And while we try to invest in chic and statement making pieces, we often have to figure out how to style our wardrobe effectively.

W

ith monochromatic looks and oversized heavy pullovers and coats, you risk looking bulky and compromising the shape of your visage. Follow these tried and tested fashion tips that never disappoint and give you an edge dressing for the very cold times.

1. Balance shapes with one well-fitting piece While heavy overcoats and fluffy sweaters make you look tawny and often compromise of solid shapes of www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

the body, you can exaggerate your stature by choosing to have a bodyfitted article in each ensemble. This could be a pair of skinny jeans, or calf-length boots that emphasize your contours. You can opt for a fitted sweater with loose pants and leave your jacket unzipped for a classy look.

2. Attract eyes to a pop of color Winter clothing is often in dark colors like black, brown, blue, or grey. This is well fitted to the season, but can make you look heavy and put on weight around areas where you are not chubby due to a washed out appearance. Combat this with a brightly colored heavy belt around the midriff area, or opt for a light washed denim with a dark sweater and coat combo. You can take the idea a step further by choosing brightly colored accessories in the form of bags, shoes, and even nail lacquer!

3. Choose pastel hues Another tip related to color is to bring in a variety of colors in your wardrobe. When you go shopping, find winter appropriate shades which aren’t basic blacks and grays. Find maroons and mauves, shades of brown and tan, offwhites and mustard yellows. You can also go for light colors in pastel so that they blend smoothly with other pieces in your wardrobe but add color and shape into your outfit.

4. Vary fabric textures Another reason outfits look bulky during winters is that they are all the same fabric or are very similar. Mix up denims, faux furs, leather, wool varieties, and even silk to get a multidimensional appearance. Every piece of clothing should stand out on its own with its own personality, without competing with another.

5. Get the right accessories While you are wearing heavy and dark

ensembles, you should stick to dainty jewelry and smaller accessories. You should avoid heavy neck pieces or dangling earrings and opt for thin chains around the neck and studs in the ears. Instead of carrying big handbags, go for sling bags with thin belts and even clutch purses. Get belts which are narrow in width and scarves that aren’t very voluminous. Winter fashion requires an extra step to balance out the elements of your outfit so they work in tandem and balance out each other; but with these simple tricks up your sleeve, you are going to rock the winter season.

4 things that could be making your

happening any longer. 1. You are brushing or combing it too much

G

reasy hair can ruin the best of days, making the prettiest outfits look lifeless and your face look flat even when you are well-rested and free of any breakouts. For some of us, greasy hair is very common, making every other day a bad hair day. There are many reasons your hair can get greasy quickly, and many of them are easy to avoid, but we simply don’t know about them. Here are some possible reasons why your hair is greasy and how to avoid this from

24

NOVEMBER 2019

When the teeth of your comb consistently hit the scalp, it stimulates the scalp and results in excessive production of oil. While some amount of natural oil is necessary for the health of your hair, too much can obviously make your hair greasy and make it look limp and lifeless. Avoid brushing or combing your hair unless you have to, and if you have flyaways, tame them with your palms and use some hairspray. 2. You are washing your hair too often Shampoos, no matter how mild or even organic, contain a certain amount of chemicals which enable them to wash off the gunk and build-up in your scalp. These chemicals can be harsh on your scalp if you wash your hair too often and either trigger the production of oil at the scalp or completely dry it out, leading to dandruff and

Wash your hair not more than three times a week, and consider conditioning your scalp with hot oil or a deep conditioner one to two times a month. 3. You are using the wrong products and tools When was the last time you washed your comb with soap and water? The dirt, oil, and hair products you use can collect on hairbrushes, combs, straighteners, and curling irons. These get transferred back to your scalp every time you use them and cause your hair to become greasy.

not know it. Heat treatments and styling, dry shampoos and styling moose, hair spray and other products can affect the hair in multifold ways. It may block the pores on the scalp, clog the roots of hair, or form a thin film across the length of the hair upon repeated use. All of this can make the hair lose its shine, affect its texture and quality, and more. Use a clarifying shampoo to detox your hair and avoid this from happening. Getting a haircut and laying off color treatments for a while can significantly help improve the texture of the hair. These tips are simple but can be easy to miss if you are not reminded once in a while. Cultivating better hygiene habits and paying attention to your everyday behavior can help you avoid greasy hair and rock voluminous locks any day.

Wash your combs and clean hairbrushes once in at least two weeks. Ensure you wipe clean your styling tools with rubbing alcohol to sanitize them. 4. Your hair needs a detox Sometimes the hair needs deep and intense rejuvenation, and we do

Miracle ingredients

S

from your kitchen for a radiant skin

kin care is a crucial step you should never skip because the consequences affect your appearance immediately. Sensitive skin or not, homemade concoctions for skin care are safer and gentler for your skin while also giving you excellent results. Using homemade skin care recipes allows you to adjust them to your personal needs and target the problem areas you have. Here are some indigenous skin care recipes you can use, and adjust them to meet your skin care needs. 1. Turmeric for radiance Make a thin paste of turmeric with water if you have oily skin, or milk if you have dry skin. Apply this paste to darker areas of the face such as near the mouth or on the forehead to eliminate tanning, or apply all over the face for an overall glow. 2. Honey for dry skin To bring in moisture into dry skin, use honey straight from the jar. Ensure you are using organic honey for this purpose. Not only is honey great for moisturizing purposes but it also contains minerals which help retain moisture in your skin for a long time.

3. Potato for dark spots Potato has a huge amount of starch, and this makes it very effective for treating dark spots. You can grate a potato and use squeezed juice all over your face to help reduce dark spots. Alternatively, you can also place thin slices of potato over your skin where it needs lightening. 4. Acne control with gram flour Acne is a result of many factors and prolonged acne requires medical attention. However, with minor cases of few breakouts, one can avoid it by using gram flour mixed with milk or water and applying it over the face as this helps unclog pores and reduce bacterial growth. 5. Detox with lemon After using make-up and chemical based products for a few days, your skin can start looking dull due to the composition of these products. To revive your skin and bring back its freshness, you can use freshly squeezed lemon juice. Lemon juice also works well on dry and darkened patches and helps brighten the complexion. It is important to avoid putting lemon juice around pimples, open faced breakouts, and any cuts or rashes as it can irritate your skin really badly.

6. Scrub away dead skin with wheat flour Every few days you should scrub away the gunk and dead skin that gathers over your face, and the best natural recipe to use is whole wheat flour mixed with water or milk. Make sure to make a viscous paste that you can use to scrub your skin properly, and then wash your face in cold water. 7. Deep moisturizing with cream, honey, and cocoa Deep condition your skin with a thin mixture of cream and honey which are very hydrating. In case of oily or pimple-prone skin, replace cream with milk. Add cocoa powder to the mix as it has antioxidants, and smells great which is important for any face pack. Using the right ingredients, you can find solutions to all your skincare needs with what you have in your kitchen and see the great results of these in real time.

Natalie Portman defends Marvel movies

A

mid criticism from Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola, “Thor: The Dark World” actress Natalie Portman has come forward to defend Marvel movies, saying there is room for all types of cinema.

“I think there’s room for all types of cinema,” hollywoodreporter.com quoted Portman as saying. “There’s not one way to make art,” she added. Portman is set to reprise her role as Jane Foster when she returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2021 with “Thor: Love and Thunder”. She defended the comic book adaptations, saying that movies allow viewers a chance to escape from their day-to-day lives. “I think that Marvel films are so popular because they’re really entertaining and people desire entertainment when they have their special time after work, after dealing with their hardships in real life,” said Portman. Earlier this month, Scorsese spoke with Empire magazine about his views towards the Marvel movies, expressing that he regards them as “not cinema” and likens them to “theme parks”. Since his initial remarks, Scorsese repeated the “theme parks” analogy at the BFI London Film Festival. Filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, best known for directing the “Godfather” trilogy, also said that “Marvel movies are not cinema”. Source: IANS

Arnold Schwarzenegger:

I don’t feel my age

A

t 72, Hollywood icon Arnold Schwarzenegger completely defies age, be it with his work or physical fitness. While promoting his upcoming film “Terminator: Dark Fate” in Korea, Arnold, who is reprising his popular role of T-800 in the movie, shared his views on getting old, saying he doesn’t feel his age. “When it comes to age, I really don’t feel it. It’s just because I get training all the time. I train every day. I was kind of waiting for a movie like that, and to prepare for the role I prepared myself for months in advance. I practiced the different stunts and coordinated with the stunt department because I believe in reps, reps and reps. I really feel that I am getting older but not obsolete for sure,” Arnold laughed. He also reminisced how he rose to fame with James Cameron’s action thriller “The Terminator” film in 1984. “I feel blessed that Cameron asked to act in his 1984 film. The film really helped my career, elevated my career. And after that film, I was offered so many action movies, and the list went on and on and on. And then we did another ‘Terminator’, a sequel which became the highest grossing movie of the year. That was awesome. And now we are back again. It really feels good to be a part of such popular franchise,” he said. Although “Terminator: Dark Fate” is the sixth installment in the franchise, it is being touted as a direct sequel to 1991’s “Terminator 2: Judgment Day”. The film ignores the events of the three films that released in between. The latest part also marks the return of filmmaker James Cameron as producer and actress Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor after 28 years since they worked on the second installment, “Terminator 2: Judgment Day”. “Terminator: Dark Fate” will release on November 1. PM Modi to Bollywood: Create films on Gandhi and Gandhism to Bollywood: Create films on Gandhi and Gandhism

bringing us all together, that too for a cause such as this. I feel we need to re-introduce Gandhi ji to India and the world. The film industry can get self-obsessed and it is important we create work that is not only about business,” said Shah Rukh, about the need of the industry to come forward and make films on Gandhi that can help in the nation-building process. Said Aamir, about the interaction session with the Prime Minister: “It was a wonderful interaction we had with the Prime Minister. He was very inspiring, very warm and very deep in what he had to say. I want to appreciate the PM for thinking about this effort. As creative people, there is much we can do, and I assure the PM that we will do even more.” For Kangana, the effort underlines the fact that Prime Minister Modi has recognized the power of the film industry. “Modi ji is the first Prime Minister who is so inclusive of art and artistes and the film industry. Nobody has recognized the soft power of art and artistes in the country before. From the bottom of my heart and on behalf of the film industry, I thank the Prime Minister,” said Kangana.

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with members of the film industry last month in New Delhi, and several of Bollywood’s top stars were present at the event. The focus was on inviting the film industry to create films and television shows that popularize Mahatma Gandhi and Gandhism, to mark the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation. “Gandhi is synonymous with simplicity. His thoughts reverberate far and wide. The power of creativity is immense, and it is essential to harness this spirit of creativity for our nation. Several people from the world of films and television have been doing great work when it comes to popularizing the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi,” noted Prime Minister Modi. Spotted at the occasion were several eminent stars and filmmakers, including Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Kangana Ranaut, Jacqueline Fernandez, Imtiaz Ali, Ekta Kapoor, Anurag Basu, and Boney Kapoor. “I would like to thank the Prime Minister for

Jacqueline said it was “an extreme honor be in the presence of PM Modi ji, and also to have a Prime Minister who is so willing to lend a helping hand to the film fraternity”. After the session with the PM, producer Ekta Kapoor said she felt that “for the first time it seemed like there is someone who knows our industry better than us”. Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali noted the tone of informality about the session helped. “The best thing about the session was that it was very informal. The film industry understands the informal language the best. The idea to make films on Gandhi ji will help reintroduce ourselves to Gandhi ji’s philosophy,” he noted. Said filmmaker Anurag Basu: “When we make films, there are moments we wonder why are we doing this. Today, we got a reason, a direction. All the creative people here are extremely upbeat after the session. I feel we will see results in a year’s time.” Producer Boney Kapoor added: “This government has always been sympathetic to the film industry right from (Atal Bihari) Vajpayee saab’s time when we were recognized as an industry. Since Mr Modi came in, he has made it a point to ensure every glitch is solved instantly.” Source: IANS

A Girl in a Whirl Continued issue (Part 37)

“Are you not happy from this marriage?”, when Baljit didn’t respond to my question, I turned side to him. I saw tears were streaming down his eyes. He was silently weeping. I was surprised and shocked. “What happened, Baljit? What’s wrong with you?”, I asked. “I am no good for you.” , Baljit finally uttered. “Why do you think so?”, I asked. “Sonia. In fact, I’m not good for any girl. I’m sorry, Sonia”, I gawked at Baljit and couldn’t believe what he meant. My luck had played another joke on me. I swallowed hard. I was recalling the pandit’s prediction that I didn’t have a happy married life for getting married before the age of twenty-four years. “Was it all happening coincidently? Do horoscopes foretell truthfully?”, I was utterly baffled. I spent the whole night with several other stupid thoughts. My luck had awarded me a dry well unable to quench my thirst. My thirsty soul kept ruffling in desperation all the night. We stayed at Shimla for three nights and four days. We visited several places. Seeing other couples, I was having an inferiority complex. I felt like everyone knew what wrong was with me, and everyone was making

fun of me. I was unable to look into others’ eyes confidently. I had lost my self-confidence. We returned home on the fifth day. We visited many relatives and friends for lunch and dinner. The inferiority complex in me was deepening further day-by-day. Amrit’s parents, elder sister, brotherin-law and their children left for Canada after two weeks of our marriage. I, Nancy and Amrit were to leave two weeks later, and our tickets were booked too. The other day, Baljit and I were sitting, basking the sun on the roof. I was reading a paper where I read advertisements by various doctors claiming to recharge any impotent man with virile power. “Bajit, if you don’t mind, shall I say something?”, I asked. “Yes, Sonia!”, Baljit said in a charmless response. “Why don’t you get some kind of treatment?” I asked showing the ads to Baljit. Baljit’s eyebrows wrinkled in worries and his eyes welled up. “What happened? Did I say something hurting to you? I’m sorry!...please don’t feel bad!”, I apologized sincerely. “Baljit, I didn’t mean to hurt you.”, I said affectionately. “I have tried numerous treatments. Those medications worked temporarily but after sometime…! One day, I had

terrible stomach ache. I consulted a specialist. I told him my whole story. The doctor advised that I must stop taking such medications or there could be very adverse effect on my kidneys. I also consulted many other doctors. All advised me to avoid such medicines.”, Telling me that, Baljit almost burst out crying. “Drugs have ruined my life completely. What the heck bad time was when I fell in a bad company.”, Baljit kept weeping like a baby. It took me a lot to quiet him down. IELTS exam preparation All three of us, Amrit, Nancy and I, returned to Canada two weeks after others had left. I turned unhappier further. The only hope that my parents, Meenu and Sunny would come to Canada was soothing me a bit. Amrit held my hand in his hand for long during our flight. I made him understand that we had to respect our new relations. Bygone was our past. Reality was staring at us.

‘Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil’ is an engaging sequel

Article 15 By: Troy Ribeiro Cast: Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sam Riley, Harris Dickinson, Ed Skrein, Michelle Pfeiffer Direction: Joachim Ronning Rating:*** “Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil, is the sequel to the 2014 released, dark fantasy adventure film, “Maleficent”, which was the original live-action, re-imagining of the classic, fairytale, “Sleeping Beauty”. The story takes a leap here. It stretches the original tale. Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) is put in a tight corner when her adoptive Godchild, Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning), aka Sleeping Beauty, agrees to marry Prince Phillip (Harris Dickinson) when he proposes. The lovers’ union would be a blessing, so thinks everyone, as it would unite and bring peace between the human Kingdom of Ulstead and the Kingdom of Moors, where the mystical creatures reside. But then, despite being happy for Aurora, Maleficent warns her, “Love does not end well...” Aurora, thinks that her Godmother is just being difficult and coaxes her to visit her future in-laws as the Prince wants her mother to meet his parents, King John (Robert Lindsay) and Queen Ingrith ( Michelle Pfeiffer) . Maleficent reluctantly agrees to visit the castle in Ulstead. But with the treatment she is meted out, she is forced to unleash her wrath, which she does, with the help of a hidden tribe of her people, led by a peacemaker, the compassionate Conall (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and a battle–hungry,

44

NOVEMBER 2019

upstart Bora (Ed Skrein). The first act of the film is frivolous followed by lots of fun which is essentially, a magical ‘meet the parents’ act. The final showdown, a pitched war, is a full-on blast that keeps you engaged with your jaws wide open. Technically, the film does not lack in any division. The Special effects and 3D animation are simply perfect. As for the action sequences, the frames feel overwhelmingly computer-generated. Mounted on a grand scale with an elaborate texture, the film is visually splendid. The camera movements are smooth and provide a panoramically full-spectrum view, that makes this fairytale appear crackling with energy, especially during the climactic sequence. Jolie, Fanning and Pfeiffer are the holy trinity of this narrative but unfortunately, their character arcs are imbalanced. The trio are brought together only twice and fail to make an impact on both occasions. The plotline marks the transition of Maleficent from a concerned and protective Godmother to a warring Mistress of Evil, but truthfully, her character is far from cruel, and thus does not carve a niche in ones’ mindframe. Ingrith’s antagonistic leanings are one-dimensional, far-fetched and unconvincing. Whereas, Fanning appears as a weightless damsel keen for adulthood and marriage. She is denied a strong arc due to the script writers’ oversight.

Similarly, Prince Philip, King John, Conall, Bora, the troll alchemist, Lickspittle (Warwick Davis), the shape shifting Diaval (Sam Riley), the three fairy aunts -- Thistlewit (Juno Temple), Knotgrass (Imelda Staunton) and Flittle (Lesley Manville) -- are all underused and wasted despite having

their moments of onscreen glory. Overall, Mistress of Evil never manages to justify the return of all its characters, but it does delve deeper into its fantasy world, and it keeps you engaged. Source: IANS

Abundantly loved around the world, Thai cuisine expresses fundamental aspects of Thai culture: it is generous, warm, refreshing and relaxed. Thai dishes rely on fresh and locally sourced ingredients like the pungent lemongrass, searing chillies and plump seafood. A diverse and elaborate national menu is built around the four fundamental flavors: spicy, sweet, salty and sour. Wandering foodies must go on eating tours of Bangkok’s noodle shacks, seafood pavilions in Phuket, and Burmese market stalls in Mae Sot. You can also take some cooking classes while in the country. These will take you on

Tripping through the Thai kingdom

a culinary journey showcasing the simplicity behind the seemingly complicated dishes, and mastering the market is an important survival skill.

Fields and forests

Outside the cluttered cities and towns lies Thailand’s rural heartland, a mix of rice paddies, tropical forests and villages where life is dominated by the rhythms of the agricultural clock. In the north, the forests and fields bump up against the lush mountains adorned with milky waterfalls and deep caves. Down south, scraggy limestone cliffs poke out of the cultivated landscape like prehistoric skyscrapers, or emerge dramatically out of the turquoise sea. The usually arid northeast turns an emerald hue during the rainy season when tender green paddy carpets the landscape.

Sacred spaces

Gleaming temples and golden Buddhas frame both the rural and the urban landscape. Ancient banyan

trees are ceremoniously wrapped in sacred cloth to honor the resident spirits, fortune-bringing shrines decorate humble homes as well as monumental malls, while garland-festooned dashboards ward off traffic accidents. There are thousands of temples across the length and breadth of the country and are a hot spot for the tourists flocking to the country. Visitors can indulge in some of the remarkable meditation retreats in Chiang Mai, religious festivals in northeastern Thailand, underground cave shrines in Kanchanaburi and Phetchaburi, and hilltop temples in northern Thailand.

Sand between your toes

gentle waters off Koh Lipe, dive with whale sharks around Koh Tao, scale the sea cliffs of Krabi, kite-board in Hua Hin, party on Koh Phi-Phi and recuperate at a health resort on Koh Samui.

There are an abundance of options to indulge into and everyone can make the most of their time in the country. So, pack your bags and head to one of the emerald beaches the next time you want to have a budgetfriendly vacation.

How does technology affect the human body? Cont. from last Issue

working from home now: this is good for the employers and possibly for the environment, but what about us?

All of these things can cause increased levels of pain and in a world where there is a growing problem of opioid addiction, could we infer that technology, in part, is the pernicious element at play?

Conclusion: The irony of technology is that it is the cure and the disease. We can improve our exercise with fitness trackers, become healthier with calorie counters, control chronic illness with biometric analyzers and take as much needed time out with supersonic aeroplanes.

Sedentary lifestyle and mental health Our abode has changed drastically with advancing technology. Modern architectural techniques and town planning mean that we are living in cavernous, heavily insulated mega-structures. We seldom have to move further from the television to the bed when we are at home. With the proliferation of mobile technology there is now an app for everything. Taxis, dry cleaning, massages: you name it, they have it. You might wonder, how is this harmful? Apart from the obvious issues related to a sedentary lifestyle, such as obesity and diabetes due to poor diet and lack of exercise, we must also consider the effect of modern living spaces on our mental health. Knowing that we are a community-orientated species, could isolated dwelling

It’s not all doom and gloom for us. Are we destined to become hyper-anxious myopic cave dwellers? The answer to this depends on our ability to manage our rapid ascent on our journey to becoming a superspecies, the likes of which the world has never seen before. and fractured communities explain the increasing levels of depression and anxiety we are seeing? We’ve never been more connected and being able to contact anyone, anywhere and anytime is great – but is the experience the same as talking

to that person face to face?
