As I met, Mr. Minhas for the first time, I found him at ease and exhibiting an impression of an ever busy entrepreneur. As I walked the talk with this 57 yrs, Virgo Baby Boomer, I found him rummaging with his journey in Canada started thirty four years back, when he married his wife Kulbinder Kaur and did not look back. Like almost every South Asian, starting with a humble beginning, in 1983, he started on a Farm in Richmond on a meagre wage of $3.65 per hour. During his formative years, Sr. Avtar Singh Nijjar, his friend, helped him to find his passion. Then, in 1984, he started plying Taxi in downtown area and engaged deeply in succession, as he owned a Yellow Cab Service. In 1991, he started his present business conglomerate Elegant Development and Holidays Ltd. along with two partners Mr. Surinder Bhatti and Mr. Tesh Chhachhi. It is here he

In 1997 he became the sole owner of this construction and development business in the name and style of Elegant Development Inc. He just moved forward and as of today, he has constructed and sold circa 650 dwellings in Richmond and Burnaby. Some of his prestigious projects are: • Low Rise Kabana on Royal Oak Burnaby built in 2011 spanning 60 units • Low Rise Panacasa on Canada Way and Smith Street Burnaby built in 2012 spanning 50 units. In hobbies front, he loves travelling, socializing, helping the needy and sports. He played athletics and was Kabaddi National Champion. Listening to English, Hindi and Punjabi music is his idea of relaxation. His philanthropic involvement in Canada and back home in India speaks volumes of his giving nature. He has served as President of PICS Surrey for 3 years (2007-2010). Being President, he played a lead role for

the construction of PICS Assisted Living. In India, he has helped in raising 3 projects namely: • Eye Hospital in Adampur, where over 6,000 surgeries have been successfully performed • Sant Baba Bagh Singh University (SBBSU), where he is serving as International Advisor • Guru Nanak Mission Hospital in Mithapur Jalandhar, this hospital has 200 beds, which will be functional by April 2018. For all this, he owes this inspiration to his rev. father, who stated, Garib da mooh, Guru Di Golak (to feed a poor is Guru’s blessings). He is actively engaged in sponsoring poets via NA Writers Association of Canada. He is a Charter member of Canadian India foundation. He served as a President of Rotary Club Vancouver Fraserview. On family front, this son of late Lumbardar Sr. Bhagwant Singh Minhas and mother Sardarni Harbhajan Kaur Minhas, is blessed with 2 lovely daughters named Nina and Rimple. Both are actively engaged in looking after the family business on macro and

micro level. He is ably supported by his wife Kulbinder. When asked, where he see himself in business in the next 10 years, he opined, “I will continue to take risks. If an entrepreneur is not a risk taker, then he should get the hell out of it.” When I left this cool, calm, composed and collected entrepreneur, I could not help thinking about this great person: Picture abhi baki hai mere dost (i.e. Game is still on and best is yet to come). Long live this Minhas family……..

No one ever stated that it was easy being an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurship is not about ideas. It’s about making ideas take a practical shape.

Sikhi Awareness Foundation introduces a $500, 000 Project for Sikligar Sikhs on Bandi Chor (Diwali) Diwas.

T

he Sikligar Sikhs, who made important contributions in the fight against human rights and oppression by the Sikh Gurus, was forced to live a life of a lot of misery due to the helplessness of the nation. While the Sikh militants had fought the enemy with the help of our Guru Sahibs in the battlefield, the Sikligar community was responsible for providing the weaponry in the hands of these warriors, which would also prove to be an important contribution. Unfortunately, the Sikh Nation has not paid much attention to assisting to lift these Sikligar Sikhs out of their poor standard of living. Their children are not able to attend school due to poverty, and those who do go to school, soon drop out. If the future of a community is at stake, then it is very important to connect their new generation with the education of the times. It is for these reasons that this special project for Sikligar Sikhs has been developed by the Sikhi Awareness Foundation of Canada. Responsibility of a village of Sikligar Sikhs in Madhya Pradesh’s district, Burhanpur has been taken to assist with the education of the children of the Sikligar Sikhs, the wives and the men. They will be assisted in working according to their interests. Bhai Shamandeep Singh, CEO of Sikhi Awareness Foundation of Canada, has said that this village is situated in the jungles 25 km from the city. There is no basic facility in this village. There is no water and sanitation facilites around. Young girls have to go in the open for toilet . In the 1st phase, SAF has taken the responsibility of around 70 children that will be put into a private school in the nearest city which is 25kms. He said that under this project, the organization will be spending approximately $500,000 throughout a period of 10 years. In addition to the education of children, sewing, embroidery and such activities will be taught in order to raise the skill level of the women, according to their interests. In addition to this, surveys will be performed on local stones and will also be addressed on their homes and so on. It is worth mentioning that the Sikhi Awareness Foundation is making special efforts for the education of needy children in many different locations, including Punjab. At present, responsibility for the education of more than 500 students is being taken care of with the generosity and participation of the Sangat and Sponsors. SAF Canada is also responsible for the education requirement of 70 children from this Sikligar village. The children’s school is about 25 miles from the village, and the cost of transportation of children is also arranged by the organization. It should also be mentioned that SAF has dedicated this year towards the Sikligars and have so far opened up a free school in Alwar, Rajasthan in January this year, opened up a Gurmat & Tuition Center in Gujarat in May this year and now this 3rd project for the Sikligar Community. Donations can be made using their website www.safcanada.org More videos & photos from this new project can be seen on our Facebook Page.

he organization is operated by leaders from all across the Lower Mainland wanting to bring a positive change within the community. Kids Play believes their work will allow the youth to discover the potential they have within themselves to reach greater heights in any aspect of life.

In the last 18 years, the rate of violent crime among young people has increased by 30%. From gangland style killings stretching from Vancouver to Toronto, Canadian cities are struggling with a wave of youth crime that was unimaginable a couple of decades ago. Many experts attribute the spike in youth crime to the increased number of street gangsoften the perpetrators of youth crime. Research indicates that youth seek comfort from those who welcome them and reinforce their sense of belonging. Unfortunately, some youth have no choice to turn to street gangs in order to satisfy their need for approval, belonging and self-worth. There

is no consensus among experts on how to reduce youth crime. Crime involvement usually starts before the age of 15, with first time offences declining markedly once young people reach 20 years of age. There is little evidence that punitive sanctions such as incarceration, community service hours, have been effective at reducing juvenile crime. There needs to be a balanced approach to dealing with young offenders. Some may need to be incarcerated, but many more need to be engaged in community programs that builds character, increases self-esteem and develop life skills. Social development programs that provide youth with positive peer interactions, opportunities to develop problem solving skills and a support adult help reduce the risk factors associated with youth crime. Organized sports being used throughout the world as a dynamic mechanism as engaging youth of all races, genders, and classes. Organized sports programs are not the end all and ball solution to youth crime, however, they can contribute to reducing youth crime by giving young people a positive identity, feelings of empowerment and by helping youth

/saentertainmentnewsmagazine

/saentertainment_magazine

acquire leadership, teamwork and self-governance skills under adult supervision. Although there is limited evidence of a direct causal relationship between youth sport and youth crime reduction, there are several rationales as to why youth sport reduces youth crime such as keeping young people busy and out of trouble, meet a need that youth have for excitement, make young people feel empowered, foster teamwork, and develop self esteem. It is on account of these above mentioned factors that I have been running various sports programs on my own time and with my respective law enforcement agency. The bedrock and fundamental principle of all these programs is to establish a rapport with disadvantaged youth through the medium of sports. These initiatives provide the youth an opportunity to play in an organized sports tournament with the end goals being; building a bridge between these youth and adults in a constructive manner and providing the youth an opportunity to learn and develop sportsmanship, teamwork and leadership skills. Make your lip colour last

Pick the right formula. Swatch test a lipstick before buying. Apply it on your hand, let it dry. Dab an alcohol-based toner on the edge of the swatch. Rub it and see how much it fades. Follow the same with a lotion. This is how you know the formula will not betray you. Don’t apply lipstick on chapped lips. When you apply a matte lipstick on chapped lips, you start picking your lips, because they feel rough. Or you apply lip balm on top. All of these make lipstick peel and come off. Prime your lips by using a hydrating, thick cream as base. Use lip liner. Lip liner might have started out as a product with which one outlines their lips, but off late, it has become very popular for filling in lips. Extremely pigmented and hard, they are formulated to be a lot more matte than lipsticks and hence, stay on the lips longer. Therefore, a lip liner base, is crucial if you want your lipstick to stay put. Layer. First, apply your lipstick. Then, pat the colour down with your fingers. Now, apply another layer of lipstick. After this, dab a tissue between your lips and dust some powder on the tissue. Follow this with one final coat of lipstick. Eat right. Oil can remove any makeup, however stubborn or transferproof. So, eating carefully, and eating the right food, is important. If you are going for a dinner date, or an important meeting which involves food, be careful not to order something very oily. And take small bites. Reapply. If all else fails, reapply your lip colour liberally wthout feeling self-conscious. Courtesy: TNN

Kate Winslet Says She Doesn’t Care About People’s Opinion

H

ollywood actress Kate Winslet, who will be next seen in ‘The Mountain between Us’, has revealed that she does not care about other people’s opinions and can’t conform to expectations. The 42-year-old actress also shared that she was very lucky to be in a position where she doesn’t have to fit in to the society’s expectations, reports Contactmusic. In an interview, Winslet said, ‘I just can’t do the conforming thing at all in life. I am not the kind of person who lives by other people’s judgements and opinions. I dance to the beat of my own drum.’ ‘It’s important for humanity and I am lucky that I can do that. There are many young women in the world who are so fragile emotionally and who don’t believe in themselves.’ The ‘Revolutionary Road’ star admitted that it can be really hard for the youth to be true to themselves, because ‘today’s society has become so judgemental.’ She noted, ‘In life, the most important thing is to be true to yourself. And it’s hard to do that, because we live in an incredibly judgemental world. Particularly in the world of celebrity, it’s unbelievably judgemental. It does actually make me sad. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could all be exactly as we really are and not have to think for two seconds about what we are saying or wearing or what we are doing? Just be free and ourselves.’ It should be noted that Kate Winslet can currently be seen ‘The Mountains between Us’ alongside Idris Elba. The movie has opened to mixed reviews in the U.S.

Leonardo DiCaprio eyed for Joker origin movie

E

ntertainment company Warner Brothers is reportedly trying to bring Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio into the upcoming Joker origin movie. The studio is eyeing DiCaprio to play The Joker in the movie that will explore the origin story of the Batman supervillain, reports hollywoodreporter.com. The Warner Brothers are allegedly trying to convince Martin Scorsese to get ‘The Revenant’ actor on board. However, no offer has been made to the ‘Django Unchained’ star since Scorsese’s deal to produce the project has not been finalised. Scorsese and DiCaprio are frequent collaborators. They teamed up in ‘The Aviator’, ‘Gangs of New York’, ‘The Departed’, ‘Shutter Island’ and ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’. Actor Jared Leto, who originally plays

the Clown Prince of Crime in the DC Extended Universe movie franchise has reportedly heard of the rumours and he was not happy. According to online theories, the story might continue with another movie that will delve into the mad love between the psychopathic clown and his former psychiatrist Harley Quinn that ends up with

their breakup. The untitled Joker and Harley Quinn project is speculated to pave a way for Harley Quinn’s solo outing with Gotham City sirens. Margot Robbie plays the pigtailed antihero and her relationship with The Joker has already been glimpsed in the 2016 hit “Suicide Squad”. Courtesy: IANS

How to strenghten

an ongoing marriage Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun)

A

LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM (A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp.)

happy marriage is being happy with what you’ve got, rather than expecting your marriage to be in a certain way. Being content and grateful for what you haveinstead of being swayed by some unrealistic standards set by fiction movies and romance novels- is real happiness. In a happy marriage, two people share things equally. It may not sound romantic, but a couple may be happy because the husband does the dishes and the laundry as often as she does. Both cook together, both run errands together. They do not feel burdened and they don’t feel taken for granted. They talk about everything, and they, rightfully, think that is what a happy marriage is. Are any problems affecting your marriage? Though many experts approach this topic from a clinical perspective, for me , saving a marriage is personal. you need to save and restore your marriage, by working on it in succession. Success can only happen, if both are working in the same direction and at the same pace or rhythm. Otherwise relationship will consist of screaming matches, unmerited firing and silent treatments. No one is perfect and if you can just let go of the little things and move on from the bigger things, like arguments, with a forgiving rather than a hating heart, your marriage is in a really good shape. the cockles of the heart. I don’t mean in dollar terms; I’m talking about the emotional pain, the sleepless nights, and the damaging anxiety in your life. Your marriage, at present, rather than being a source of joy, is destroying your quality of life. You have to do something about that or for yourself and for your entire family with kids in particular. Stay away from insanity: Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. If you keep doing the same things, you’ll have the same disturbing re-marriage results. But if you want to change your situation, you need to learn new ways. You need to do things differently. And if you don’t, you may look back one day and think that ,for me- in a marriage- history has the tragedy to repeat itself again and again. Give relationship a try: When both make a commitment to work on their marriage then the positive bonding is further strengthened. A persistent, consistent effort as a team with honesty of commitment and constancy to purpose NEVER FAILS. Women are from Venus and men are from mars: A couple should always remember that biologically both are different in thinking, acting and reacting. And both view life differently. They need to give margin to the imperfect behaviour – in patches- of each other instead of accusing and abusing the relationship. Try to Re-connect Wise couple try to put their energy into trying to re-connect. They use certain relationship techniques that transform and finally seal a happymarriage and blissful life. Not only do they resolve their differences; they fall in love again! They do it by dealing with their problems by establishing new relationship habits that bring positive energy in a marriage. Get your marriage back on track: Accentuate positive re-

Try to become a team rather than two individuals. Do not throw the baby, named Marriage, out with the quintessential bath water. lationship habits that change the way you and your spouse relate. Those changes in turn “stop the continuous bleeding” in your relationship and restore the connection you and your spouse once had. Maturity helps here to succeed. But maturity does not come with age; it comes with positive attitude. Mind it. The solution to most marital situations is to “step away” from the problems first and spend time and energy building a relationship through positive actions. If you do this RIGHT, then your problems will dissipate, the threat of divorce will go away, and the other people invading your marriage will become irrelevant. Slowly but surely you will feel close again. Following tips will strengthen a marriage further: 4Relate to your spouse, your soulmate 4Snap out destructive patterns of behaviour 4Stop dwelling on the past and start moving forward 4Try to get over old hurt slowly but surely 4Do daily small acts that will rebuild love in your marriage 4Engage in those activities that will soften your marital environment 4Do acts that will restore romance between you 4Help to get your spouse to change

4Try to make decisions together 4Try to get YOUR needs met 4Try to connect with an emotionally absent spouse in patches 4Try to keep the small things small 4Try to tickle your spouse’s soul 4Develop a wayto deal with a spouse who won’t listen 4Initiate to break the silence 4Devise ways to spend enough time together 4Get and give the right affection 4Resist temptation to feel attracted to another man/woman 4Handle with care, if your spouse has intimate online friends 4Make persistent efforts to restore honour to your marriage 4Talk effectively so your spouse will listen 4Patiently, listen so that your spouse can talk Bottomline: One might be thinking to do all this years ago to put an ailing marriage back on the rails of normalcy. Well, it’s never too late. Better late thann ever. Not only you will resolve your differences; you will fall in love again! And you will say in chorus: “Happy Days Are here again!”

As per latest stats over 75% of people that go to marriage counseling report they’re WORSE off or divorced less than a year later.

A Girl in a Whirl Contd. from previous issue (Part 16) I got up by 2 P.M. Dad had already gone to the shop. After washing my face, I went to my mom in the kitchen. “Sonia, first have hot lunch. I have made fried spicy seasoned cheese for you. And Sam also had called around 10 A.M. I told him that you were tired and sleeping. If he wanted I could wake you up. He asked me to let you relax. He would call you in the evening again.”, mom told me but I didn’t respond. The cheese dish was really so delicious. I had a good deal of food in my lunch. Then mom prepared tea while having her lunch. Both of us had tea in the TV room. I put my head in my mom’s lap and lay on the sofa closing my eyes. Mom began smoothing my hair. I loved my mom’s loving me like this. I lay there for long. Meenu came from her college by 4 o’clock. Gambolling and singing,

Meenu changed her clothes, went to the washroom, took her meal from mom and sat beside me on the sofa. The whole atmosphere was charged with Meenu’s cheerfulness. “How are you, Princess Sonia? Is you tiredness gone by now?’, Meenu asked me rhetorically. “No Princess Meenu, my head is yet aching terribly.”, I also replied rhetorically. “Don’t worry Princess; let me first finish these challenging chapattis and cheese dish in my battlefield of hunger. Then I’ll give you such a head massage with coconut oil that your headache will vanish just like …as these chapattis and dish will, right now.” Meenu had modified the rest of the proverb ‘as horns from a donkey’s head’ in such a style that I burst out laughing. I hugged Meenu tightly and kissed on her cheek. My sister was my darling indeed. After having her meal, Meenu massaged my head with coconut oil pretty well. I really liked it. Sunny also came after some time. Sunny didn’t talk much to us. He liked boys’ company more. Even our dad didn’t talk much. We often saw him speak to our mom humbly. Just then, I got a phone call from Sam. I stayed there and responded to him in ‘yes, hmmm…’ only. Sam was going to send me my air ticket for Canada. I didn’t talk about anything else. Dad also

came home by 8 o’clock. After having our dinner, mom and dad asked us to assemble in their bedroom. We all huddled together in a quilt on the bed. Mom brought a big bowl full of roasted peanuts, reoris (seasame coated sugar candies) and gachak (Candy made of jaggery and peanuts). She also brought a big empty bowl for putting the peanut husks. We, three siblings, began devouring peanuts, reoris and gachak. Dad also came there. Mom had a lovely smile on her face seeing us. We, three siblings, had finished more than half of the material. We enjoyed ourselves a lot. Dad and mom also came and sat beside us. “Sunny, Meenu, Sonia. I want to share something very important with you guys.”, dad said in cool tone. “When we are children, we all have big dreams. We have tremendous enthusiasm too, which is pretty good. If we have this zeal forever, we can accomplish great missions. When children are studying in schools and colleges, they have no idea what real life actually is. They live mostly in fools’ paradise. When they start a job or get married, they begin to realize how hard real life is.”, dad was speaking and all of us were listening to him very attentively. Dad continued. Contd. in next issue

At that time, the actress said, ‘As a devoted mother and private person and with complete awareness that my daughter will one day be old enough to read the news about herself, I would only like to say that I will never, ever be commenting on the dissolution of my marriage. Out of respect for my desires as a parent and out of respect for all working moms, it is with kindness that I ask other parties involved and the media to do the same. Thank you.’ Romain’s attorney, Hal Mayerson, said his client was in the midst of private negotiations, when Scarlett suddenly filed for divorce and requested sole custody of Rose.

porting a perfect manicure with immaculate nails and an eye catching design can never go out of style. Celebrities swear by this. So, no matter how stunning your outfit is, nail art can make or break your look. Although they’re a small part of our body, nails have the ability to add that extra oomph to your persona. And no, you don’t need to have insane extensions or super complex designs to get the perfect set of nails. It’s about time people realize that beautiful nail art can be achieved on short nails as well! The idea that only people with long nails can get nail art is plain stupid. Examine your nails Before you head out to the nail spa, have a good look at your nails. Please don’t take badly bitten nails, destroyed cuticles or jagged nails to the salon. Before you plan anything, make sure you get a good manicure from the salon itself or a DIY can work too. Although, if you’re not a pro at filing or cutting your nails, then it’s best to rely on professionals. Next, give your nails a symmetric shape, by filing them a little. It’s also a good idea to get your cuticles pushed back, this helps in increasing surface

The new French manicure Add yet another twist to the classic manicure by switching the tips. Instead of painting each tip a boring white, you could paint them in different shades to quirk up the classic you could even choose two different tip shades and apply them at a diagonal angle instead of stick straight. Lastly, remember to keep the base a neutral color to really bring out your nails. Ombre Just like your hair, your nails too can have an ombre look. Instead of getting an ombre on every nail, go for an ombre where the deepest shade is applied to the thumb and the lightest to the pinky finger. Ranbir Kapoor is taking it slow

E

ven though his debut film, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya alongside Sonam Kapoor might’ve fizzled out at the boxoffice; Ranbir Kapoor was superstar material from day 1. He was touted as the next big thing overnight. With back to back hits and impeccable performances like in Rockstar, Barfii!, Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani and many more… he was far beyond his league of contemporaries. But off late he’s been having a dull phase at the box-office with films like Besharam, Roy, Tamasha and Jagga Jasoos. But that hasn’t stopped filmmakers from

queuing up outside Ranbir Kapoor’s door. Considering his talent that’s hardly surprising. But Ranbir has been turning away everyone. He will hear scripts only after he starts shooting for Ayan Mukerji’s Brahmastra alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Alia Bhatt. The actor wants to now concentrate on the two movies at hand, namely the Sanjay Dutt biopic being directed by Raj Kumar Hirani and the first part of Brahmastra. According to sources, the actor wants to take his time choosing the right ones. Take your time Ranbir and shine bright! Courtesy: Filmfare

ajinikanth starrer 2.0 is one of the most anticipated films of next year. After the enormous success of the first part, Robot (2010), director S. Shankar is going all the way to make 2.0 the biggest project in Indian cinema’s history. The antagonist of this film is being played by Akshay Kumar, who plays a scientist in the film and the lead character will be played by Rajinikanth. But not many know that at one point Aamir Khan was going to be a part of 2.0. In a recent chat with Komal Nahta, Aamir Khan revealed that he was offered Rajinikanth’s role in the film. Aamir said that he read the script and was extremely convinced that this film was going to break all the records. He mentioned that even Rajinikanth called him to take up the project as he was facing certain health issues. Aamir then said that no matter how much he tried, he could have never aced the role the way Rajinikanth did and every time he closed his eyes he could only picture the senior actor doing the character. Shankar is a visionary and it comes as a total surprise that even he could imagine the lead character being played by Aamir Khan but then, one has to believe that whatever happens, happens for the best. arly 2017, Kids Play initiated the first ever youth Kabaddi portfolio with the goal of bringing back the heritage sport of the Punjabi culture. Sports, like Kabaddi, allow youth to utilize their energy in a positive manner with the benefit of cost-efficient partici-

pation. Coaches Amrit Chahal and Avjinder Singh along with 10 members from the Kids Play Kabaddi team were given the incredible opportunity to participate in the World Cup Kabaddi Tournament in Toronto this year. This new experience proved to be memorable for them as they not only learned about teamwork but developed strategies on improving their stamina, speed and agility for better performance. In essence, sports improve physical and psychological health and wellbeing which fits well the objective of KidsPlay to promote physical and mental wellness in the youth and divert away from gang and drug-related activity.

How to control

Hunger

Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM (A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp.)

A

LL OF US get hungry in succession and the wheel of hunger and satiety goes on as we need fuel for the body to keep it on the rails of normalcy. Whenever hunger -the urge to eatstrikes we feel hungry, courtesy, a complex group of signals throughout the brain and body that trigger such reaction. The drive to eat comes not only from the body’s need for immediate fuel/energy, but also a variety of environmental reasons as we feel pleasure in eating. Sugar addiction also plays a big role.

What is hunger?

First of all, it’s important to understand exactly what hunger is — what’s going on inside our brain vis-à-vis body that makes us say, I feel hungry. As per the traditional concept of hunger: when you haven’t eaten in several hours, your stomach is starting to growl or grumble and you’re feeling those usual bodily sensations associated with hunger. This feeling of hunger stems from your body’s need for calories; the need for energy prompts the signal that it’s time to eat. Experts name it as “homeostatic hunger”. Homeostatic hunger is driven by a complex series of signals throughout the body and brain that tell us we need food for fuel. Hormones in the body signal when energy stores are running low. When this occurs, levels of Ghrelin (colloquially referred to as the “hunger hormone”) start to rise, but then become suppressed as soon as a person starts eating. In addition, as food travels through the body, a series of satiety responses (which signal fullness) are fired off, starting in the mouth and continuing down through the stomach and the small intestine. These signals tell the brain, we’re getting food down here. And up in the brain, another series

People do eat even when they don’t need to. And the more often people eat highly palatable foods, the more their brains learn to crave for them. We do so to have much more pleasure, Pleasure and PLEASURE. The sad part is people do not know what they are doing is diabolical to their longevity

50

november 2017

People don’t just eat for energy, they eat for pleasure, but ultraprocessed foods drive the brain to want more of them, essentially overpowering the normal fullness signals firing in the brain. As a result the body of a man becomes apple -shaped and of a woman pearshaped. of signals are also at work. These are the sets of opposing signals: the hunger-stimulating (“orexigenic”) peptides, and the hunger-suppressing (“anorexigenic”) peptides. These peptides are hormones that are responsible for telling the brain that a person needs to eat or that a person feels full.

What filling foods should you choose?

Hunger is your body’s natural cue that it needs more food.Normally, the best way to get rid of homeostatic hunger is to eat. And your best bet to maintain that full feeling for a healthy amount of time is to eat nutritious foods that fill you up for a longer period.A diet that contains fibre, unsaturated fat and lean protein is very fulfilling. And protein is the most fulfilling of the macronutrients. Eating larger amounts of protein does increase feelings of fullness compared to eating smaller amounts of protein. But it’s also important to be careful about certain foods. Zerocalorie sweeteners, for example, can confuse fullness signals and trick your brain into thinking you haven’t eaten much when you actually have, thus leading you to eat more. There is much debate among health experts about the effects of these sweeteners in the body.Zero-calorie sweeteners may impact feelings of hunger and fullness.

Ultra -Processed foods:

These foods are loaded with saturated fat and glucose/sugar.Ultra-

/saentertainmentnewsmagazine

@ansalmedia

processed foods are those that, in addition to sugar, salt, oils and fats, include additives like emulsifiers, flavours and colors e.g. potato chips or frozen pizza. It’s probably best to say no to these foods most of the time. Though occasional bite may be harmless. If a person only eatbecause the body need energy/calories, food would be beneficial. But that’s not the case.People “don’t eat necessarily because of the signals that govern our energy stores. Rather, sometimes, you just want food for pleasure. The best practice for fighting hedonic hunger is to keep those highly palatable (pleasant to taste.) and tempting foods out of sight. Keep treats in portion-controlled servings

When you’re hungry, your stomach may “growl” and feel empty, or you may get a headache, feel peeved at or be unable to concentrate.” also may help. For example, instead of buying ice cream in bulk and in the freezer, buy chocolate ice cream pops and eat just one, as a dessert.

Food Cravings v/s Hedonic hunger

The burgeoning desire to eat may sound similar to cravings, and there’s definitely an overlap between the two. However, a craving is a desire for a specific food, whereas hedonic hunger is a desire for palatable foods in general.

LIFESTYLE

sports

A person who hasn’t eaten in 5 to 6 or more hours is experiencing homeostatic hunger, whereas a person who wants dessert after finishing a full meal is experiencing hedonic hunger. asking people to picture a food can trigger a craving. So, to stop a craving, your best bet is to thwart the mental processes needed to imagine food. And thinking about other visual imagery is a good place to start. Just knowing how cravings start and stop can help you let them fade away without having to react to them. Most cravings fade by themselves if you can resist them.

Eating for reward and pleasure:

When eating is provoked by pleasure, rather than hunger, endogenous rewarding chemical signals are activated which can lead to overeating, according to a recent study. The phenomenon ultimately affects body mass and as per experts, may be a factor in the continuing rise of obesity. When one is eating for pleasure not hunger, then every bite is goodfor- bad -health.

Stress

As we all know chronic stress in particular influence eating habits. But different types of stress can have different effects on different people. Major stressors — such as war, famine and severe trauma — are associated with an increased risk of developing serious mental illnesses, such as major depression and posttraumatic stress disorder, both of which have been linked to changes in appetite.Who has researched the neurological basis of feeding and disordered eating? People generally report that they eat in response to stress, but another 40 percent say they experience a decrease in their appetite in response to stress. Though it is unclear what’s going on in the body to drive stress-induced eating, yet cortisol [the stress hormone] has been primarily linked to stress-induced eating, Experts suggest that ghrelin, and possibly leptin, also likely contribute to changes in food intake and body weight in response to chronic stress Contd. In Next Issue

How craving for a particular food develop: Imagining foods in greater detail can lead to emotional responses that further fuel cravings. In fact, research has shown that visualizing foods play such a strong role in cravings that even

P

eople married to a frail spouse are likely to become frail themselves and a person married to a depressed spouse is more likely to be sad, say researchers, adding that in older adults, frailty and depression are connected within couples. Frailty, a condition that affects 10 percent of people aged 65 and older, can make older adults more prone to disability, falls, hospitalisation and a shorter lifespan. They found the frailer an older person is the more likely it is that he or she will become depressed. The more depressed an older person is the more likely he or she is to become frail. The study, published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, examined the effects of frailty and depression on married couples. These findings are based on a study of data from 1,260 married couples, aged 65 and older, collected during the Cardiovascular Health Study.

www.SAENTERTAINMENT.CA

Although we know much about the effects of frailty and depression on individuals, up until now, little has been uncovered about how these two conditions may be connected within couples. Interestingly, older husbands tended to be more depressed and frail than younger husbands. Older wives were not more depressed, but were frailer than younger wives. Generally, people are considered frail if they have three or more of these conditions: Low body weight (unintentional loss of 10 pounds in the past year), weakness, exhaustion, slowness and physical inactivity. Frailty and depression symptoms may be intertwined for spouses, suggesting that senior living facilities might consider ways to increase couples’ engagement in physical activities, social activities and mutual support, the researchers suggested. nfluenza is a viral infection that attacks your respiratory system — your nose, throat and lungs. Influenza, commonly called the flu, is not the same as stomach “flu” viruses that cause diarrhea and vomiting. For most people, influenza resolves on its own. But sometimes, influenza and its complications can be deadly. People at higher risk of developing flu complications include: • Young children under 5, and especially those under 2 years • Adults older than 65 • Residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities • Pregnant women and women up to two weeks postpartum • People with weakened immune systems • People who have chronic illnesses, such as asthma, heart disease, kidney disease and diabetes • People who are very obese, with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher • Your best defense against influenza is to receive an annual vaccination. Symptoms Initially, the flu may seem like a common cold with a runny nose, sneezing and sore throat. But colds usually develop slowly, whereas the flu tends to come on suddenly. And although a cold can be a nuisance, you usually feel much worse with the flu. Common signs and symptoms of the flu include: • Fever over 100.4 F (38 C) • Aching muscles, especially in your back, arms and legs • Chills and sweats • Headache • Dry, persistent cough • Fatigue and weakness • Nasal congestion • Sore throat When to see a doctor Most people who get the flu can treat themselves at home and often don’t need to see a doctor. If you have flu symptoms and are at risk of complications, see your doctor right away. Causes Flu viruses travel through the air in droplets when someone with the infection coughs, sneezes or talks. You can inhale the droplets directly, or you can pick up the germs from an object — such as a telephone or computer keyboard — and then transfer them to your eyes, nose or mouth. People with the virus are likely contagious from the day or so before symp-

toms first appear until about five days after symptoms begin, though sometimes people are contagious for as long as 10 days after symptoms appear. Children and people with weakened immune systems may be contagious for a slightly longer time. Influenza viruses are constantly changing, with new strains appearing regularly. If you’ve had influenza in the past, your body has already made antibodies to fight that particular strain of the virus. If future influenza viruses are similar to those you’ve encountered before, either by having the disease or by vaccination, those antibodies may prevent infection or lessen its severity. But antibodies against flu viruses you’ve encountered in the past can’t protect you from new influenza subtypes that can be very different immunologically from what you had before. Risk factors Factors that may increase your risk of developing influenza or its complications include: • Age. Seasonal influenza tends to target young children and older adults. • Living or working conditions. People who live or work in facilities along with many other residents, such as nursing homes or military barracks, are more likely to develop influenza. • Weakened immune system. Cancer treatments, anti-rejection drugs, corticosteroids and HIV/AIDS can weaken your immune system. This can make it easier for you to catch influenza and may also increase your risk of developing complications. • Chronic illnesses. Chronic conditions, such as asthma, diabetes or heart problems, may increase your risk of

influenza complications. • P regnancy. Pregnant women are more likely to develop influenza complications, particularly in the second and third trimesters. Women who are two weeks postpartum are also more likely to develop influenzarelated complications. •O besity. People with a BMI of 40 or more have an increased risk of complications from the flu. Complications If you’re young and healthy, seasonal influenza usually isn’t serious. Although you may feel miserable while you have it, the flu usually goes away in a week or two with no lasting effects. But high-risk children and adults may develop complications such as: • P neumonia •B ronchitis •A sthma flare-ups •H eart problems • E ar infections Pneumonia is the most serious complication. For older adults and people with a chronic illness, pneumonia can be deadly. Prevention Health Canada & The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends annual flu vaccination for everyone over the age of 6 months. Each year’s seasonal flu vaccine contains protection from the three or four influenza viruses that are expected to be the most common during that year’s flu season. Controlling the spread of infection The influenza vaccine isn’t 100 percent effective, so it’s also important to take measures such as these to reduce the spread of infection:

Wash your hands. Thorough and frequent hand-washing is an effective way to prevent many common infections. Or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers if soap and water aren’t readily available. Contain your coughs and sneezes. Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough. To avoid contaminating your hands, cough or sneeze into a tissue or into the inner crook of your elbow. Avoid crowds. Flu spreads easily wherever people congregate — in child care centers, schools, office buildings, auditoriums and public transportation. By avoiding crowds during peak flu season, you reduce your chances of infection. And, if you’re sick, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever subsides so that you lessen your chance of infecting others. Diagnosis Your doctor will conduct a physical exam, look for signs and symptoms of influenza, and possibly order a test that detects influenza viruses. The most commonly used test is called a rapid influenza diagnostics test, which looks for substances (antigens) on a swab sample from the back of the nose or throat. These tests can provide results in 30 minutes or less. However, results vary greatly and are not always accurate. Your doctor may diagnose you with influenza based on symptoms, despite having a negative test result. More-sensitive flu tests are available in some specialized hospitals and labs. Treatment Usually, you’ll need nothing more than bed rest and plenty of fluids to treat the flu. But in some cases, your doctor may prescribe an antiviral medication, such as oseltamivir (Tamiflu) or zanamivir (Relenza). If taken soon after you notice symptoms, these drugs may shorten your illness by a day or so and help prevent serious complications Lifestyle and home remedies If you do come down with the flu, these measures may help ease your symptoms: • Drink plenty of liquids. Choose water, juice and warm soups to prevent dehydration. • Rest. Get more sleep to help your immune system fight infection. • Consider pain relievers. Use an overthe-counter pain reliever, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others), to combat the achiness associated with influenza.

machine learning tool can help identify which high-risk breast lesions are likely to become cancerous with 97 per cent accuracy, an advance that may help reduce unnecessary surgeries, a study has revealed. High-risk breast lesions are biopsy-diagnosed lesions that carry an increased risk of developing into cancer. Surgery is often the preferred treatment option. But a lot of the lesions do not pose an immediate danger to patients. However, doctors tend to over-screen for breast cancer. Using the machine learning tool could help improve detection as well as prevent over treatment, said researchers from Harvard University. The findings showed that the tool could avoid almost one-third

of benign surgeries with accurate prediction of 37 out of 38 lesions, or 97 per cent, that were upgraded to cancer. The tool, described in the journal Radiology, also identified the terms “severely” and “severely atypical” in the text of the pathology reports as associated with a greater risk of upgrade to cancer. “Our study provides ‘proof of concept’ that machine learning can not only decrease unnecessary surgery by nearly one-third in this

specific patient population, but can also support more targeted, personalised approaches to patient care,” said Constance Lehman, Professor at Harvard Medical School. “Our goal is to apply the tool in clinical settings to help make more informed decisions as to which patients will be surveyed and which will go on to surgery,” added lead author and radiologist Manisha Bahl, from Massachusetts Courtsey: ANI General Hospital.

new technology promises to speed up slow Internet at home, say researchers, adding that the new hardware can enable speed up to 10,000 megabits-per-second (Mbps) or 10 gigabits-per-second (Gbps). For a super-fast yet low-cost broadband connection at home in Britain, the new receiver technology can enable dedicated data rates at more than 10,000 Mbps from the current 36 Mbps, noted researchers from the University College London. “Although 300 Mb/s may be available to some, average UK speeds are currently 36 Mb/s. By 2025, average speeds over 100 times faster will be required to meet increased demands for bandwidth-hungry applications such as ultra-high definition video, online gaming and the Internet of Things (IoT),” explained lead researcher Sezer Erkilinc. “The future growth in the number of mobile devices, coupled with the promise of 5G to enable new services via smart devices, means we are likely to experience bandwidth restrictions; our new optical receiver technology will help combat this problem,” he added in a paper published in the journal Nature Communications. Importance of Feng Shui Home Decor W

hat is feng shui? A belief or pure science? Some say it’s a science while some say it’s just a mere belief. Well, I think it’s both, now take an example of a doctor, before visiting any doctor you need to believe in him or else how will you follow his guidelines. Coming back to feng shui, the basic problem is that we have no idea exactly what kind of science it is and honestly it is much deep-rooted than we think. Perhaps now we all know that feng shui is a kind of process that entirely affects your surroundings, and many homeowners think of buying these kinds of products. Tip 1: Make your mouth delightful: The entrance gate is more entrancing in order to attract all good opportunities and besides, it makes you so inspiring and fresh once you enter your space. From a fresh doormat to colorful pots of flowers, newly placed bulbs, etc can be done to enhance your entrance.

Tip 2: Place your furnishings properly: Feng shui home decor always emphasizes on placing the living room furnishings in such a way that you can easily see the entrance exactly from where you are sitting or lying but make sure it’s not in the direct alignment. Apart from this get rid of those products where you can easily bump your head on or stub your toe as they are unsafe for you and your loved ones. Tip 3: Keeping Living areas clean and decluttered We all are indirectly connected with the things that we own, so having lots and lots of stuff is not good. Always keep this in mind your home is the metaphor of your life, so keep your lives clean by keeping your living areas clean and de-cluttered. Tip 4: Buy always Feng Shui crystals or Himalayan salt crystals You can think of buying those rare feng shui crystals or Himalayan salt crystal lamps or bookends made from crystal and place them near your living area or home entrance, outside or inside, etc. Tip 5: Re-arrangement of bed room space While re-arranging your bedroom space, always remember that bedrooms are passive in nature while office areas have to be active. So always make sure to keep your bedroom areas more relaxing that provides you a good night sleep. So this is it! These are some of the basic tips to consider while executing home decor.

volving around Alauddin Khilji and his obsessive love for the queen of Mewar, Rani Padmavati who was then married to Rana Ratan Singh. The queen was utterly famous for her beauty, intellect, charm and courage. Legend says that Alauddin heard about the unparalleled beauty of Rani Padmini and was eager to see her in person. When he got a glimpse of her, he got so dazzled by her beauty that he decided to capture her. He ordered his army to attack the Chittor fort and invade the kingdom. Even though the Mewar Army was outnumbered, Rana Ratan Singh declared that they would fight till their last breath. Rajput fought with great courage to protect their pride but in the end lost the war. When Padmavati got to know about the developments, she decided to commit Suicide (Jauhar). As the men marched towards the fort, celebrating their victory, a huge pyre was lit up. Following their queen, Rani Padmini, the women of Mewar jumped into the pyre. It will be very interesting to see Ranveer Singh playing Alauddin Khilji as he is considered to be the most brutal humans to be ever born on earth. Courtesy: padmavati-moviereview.in

Taurus (20 April – 20 May ) - You’ll be in a great mood and have a lot of energy, so that you’d better do some sport or any other kind of physical effort to use the surplus. You may also build a business partnership or work closely with someone to further your career.

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September ) – This month will see a boost of supreme inner confidence rise to the surface that will encourage you to take on many new things. You’ll enjoy a burst of energy and new responsibilities. A romance or deep friendship may flower.

Gemini (21 May – 20 June) - The next four weeks will bring a time for you to work hard for the money and see an increase of work projects and tasks. You’ll either start a new sentimental relationship, or revitalize the old one.

Cancer (21 June – 22 July ) - It is a great time for you to build connection and see an increase of clients and customers. You would move ahead in your career and build more financial security. All social relationships will probably undergo changes, and experience new parameters .

Libra

Scorpio

(23 September – 22 October) - You can be in fine creative form, bringing extra oomph to the work you do or standing out for your services and efforts. This month is also strong for bonding with a partner or special friend, particularly through conversation and entertainment.

(22 November -21 December) - You’re finding your voice and set to focus on new initiatives and interests. Decisions come more confidently now, and you’re looking ahead rather than behind you. Inspiration may come from a private moment with someone, or from within.

(23 October – 21 November) - This is a good time for looking and feeling good, stepping outside of your comfort zone a little in order to reach out to others or express a hidden side of yourself, and attempting projects that require more verve or confidence.

Capricorn (22 December – 19 January ) - A sense of mission or purpose is with you now when it comes to business and possibly self-care and health efforts. Much focus will be on harmonizing with a romantic interest, or getting in touch with your creative muse.

Aquarius (20 January – 18 February ) - You might find powerful inspiration to enjoy and express yourself. You’ll enjoy making others feel appreciated with your special attention. Your affections might be kept especially private as you sort out what and who you truly want.
