Meet Raj Sidhu:
A community-minded business leader The business of acting local
Sidhu’s story begins in Campbell River, B.C., where he grew up. His parents worked in real estate and had a strong connection with many of the local businesses. Growing up in a tight-knit community taught Sidhu the importance of relationships, reputation and being invested in your backyard. These are all traits that have travelled with him throughout his career. “In a smaller community, it’s all about building genuine relationships, and your brand is critical because everybody knows one another by name. Those are the same philosophies that help guide us in the credit union system as well,” explains Sidhu. After gaining valuable experience working within a few different senior roles at various financial institutions, Sidhu returned to Envision Financial in the spring of 2017 where he now works as the Regional Manager of Commercial Banking, leading the largest centre for First West Credit Union. The advantages of working with a member-owned cooperative were clear for Sidhu. “What I love most about the credit union culture is having the ability to be nimble towards change and staying in tune with what is happening in each community. The needs of business in Surrey could be vastly different than the needs of business in downtown Vancouver. You can’t paint all businesses with a broad brush.” He’s quick to point out why having a local perspective is essential when it comes to supporting the objectives of local businesses. “All of our local communities are unique. They all have nuances and economic differences that play a huge factor in the

decision-making process for local businesses. Being able to support these businesses with their financial strategies and having a seat at the table means that we have earned their trust, and trust is essential in this business,” says Sidhu.
Supporting his community The “act local” mantra isn’t reserved only for the office. Sidhu is heavily involved in his community of Surrey and surrounding areas, where he lives with his wife Ruby, and their two sons, Arjun and Karam. He is very supportive of sharing his leadership lessons through local mentorship— having facilitated development workshops at local schools focused on leadership, public speaking, and personal branding. His main community focus now is on the Swing FORE The Full Cupboard annual golf tournament that he founded two years ago. The tournament raises food, funds, and awareness for Envision Financial’s signature cause, The Full Cupboard – a community program that supports food banks in the communities where the credit union operates. With Sidhu’s guidance and leadership, Envision has been able to raise over $130,000, the equivalent of 490,000 meals that local food banks can provide those in need in the community.
“We know that hunger has no boundaries and that local food banks are such an important pillar in our communities. This tournament is just one of the ways our entire organization is working towards our goal of eradicating hunger,” says Sidhu. He’s also quick to point out that it is a team effort that goes into this tournament. “This event is planned and executed solely by Envision volunteers. It’s inspiring to see the passion, commitment and time that they commit to this tournament, and it’s reflected in the tremendous success that we’ve been able to have thus far,” says Sidhu. Sidhu is extremely proud of the work that’s gone into the golf tournament and hopes that the success will continue for many years to come.

he weather transition as the season changes can be pretty gruesome. During this time, the human immunity is believed to be low and hence, it is advised to take adequate precautions to keep you and your family safe and healthy. Here are a few tips that if followed, can help you sail smoothly through the weather transition.
The single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated each year in the fall. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Wash your hands with soap and water. Stay home if you get sick so that the infection doesn’t spread within other people.

Get involved with your kids’ activities at home and at school to help ensure they are eating right and ensuring an overall healthy lifestyle. The parents also need to educate the children about how safety is important. Education about sports related injuries especially concussion, is important as in winters, injuries take longer to heal. So, it is advised to spend time with your children and see them flourish as happy and healthy humans.
Antibiotics can cure bacterial infections, but not viral infections. The common cold and flu are viral infections, so avoid using antibiotics if you have one of these. Using antibiotics when they are not needed causes some bacteria to become resistant to the antibiotic, and therefore stronger and harder to kill. See your doctor or nurse to find out if your illness is bacterial or viral.
Keep food safe Food is center stage during the holidays. Be sure to keep it safe by following basic food safety steps. Clean hands and surfaces often.

Exercise regularly Indoor or outdoor exercise is essential for optimum health. Indulging into any exercise for about one hour per day would be very good. Aerobics with some weight training would prevent obesity and also maintain your muscle mass. A daily intake of Vitamin D 1000 IU is advised by Health Canada to ensure good health.
Get the right amount of sleep Research suggests that 7 hours of sleep is essential every day. Ensuring this keeps our immune system active and also our hormones in balance. Lack of sleep makes ones’ body weak and prone to infection and inflammation. So get the right amount of sleep every day, remember, you can’t compensate for your sleepless nights of the week during the weekend. A good night sleep is required every single day of the week.

Bandi Chhor Divas A celebration of pride, sacrifice and honour
this young boy, Hargobind, had saved the emperor’s life. The Guru and the emperor became good friends, but this only provoked the jealousy of others who wanted the emperor’s favour for themselves. One such man was Chandu Shah, a rich banker, who had some influence in the court. Chandu Shah had been influential in arranging Guru Arjan’s death and now focused his wrath on his son, Guru Hargobind.
B
andi Chhor Divas which translates to the Prisoner Liberation Day is the day when the sixth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Hargobind ji, was liberated from the Gwalior Fort which is situated in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. He took along 52 prisoners to freedom with him as a sign of love, care and empathy towards his fellow inmates in the prison. This is how this day got its name and origin. The occasion of Bandi Chhor Divas was first observed in autumn of 1619 and is still celebrated in the month October or November in accordance to the dates of the Hindu lunar calendar. It is a day widely celebrated by the Sikh community in order to commemorate the sacrifice, pride, honour and the rich history and culture of the community. How it all started: The saga behind Guru Hargobind being detained Guru Hargobind’s father, Guru Arjan Dev ji, had been

martyred almost 13 years before, and the Mughal authorities were carefully watching the young Guru. When he constructed the Akal Takht, the Throne of the Almighty, in Amritsar and simultaneously strengthened his army, the Nawab of Lahore, Murtaja Khan, was alarmed and informed the Mughal emperor Jahangir about these happenings. The Nawab conveyed his fear that the Guru might be planning to avenge the death of his father. Jahangir soon sent his men Wazir Khan and Guncha Beg to Amritsar to arrest Guru Hargobind. Wazir Khan, however, happened to be an admirer of the Guru; instead of arresting him, he persuaded the Guru to accompany them to Delhi to meet the emperor. Even though Jahangir had ordered the execution of his father, the Guru accepted the invitation and journeyed to the emperor’s court. On his arrival, when Jahangir met the young Guru, he was captivated by his charm and purity of spirit. He asked him as to which religion
was better as per him, Hindu or Muslim, to which the Guru quoted lines from poet Kabir asserting that there is “One Lord is within both Hindus and Muslims”. The emperor was spellbound by the wisdom of a young boy and prepared a royal reception for him. Soon, he even invited the young Hargobind to accompany him on his royal hunting expeditions. It is believed that during one of these hunts, the emperor and his troupe were on a lookout for a lion which had been terrorising a village. Without warning, the lion exploded from the bushes and attacked Jahangir. Desperately, the other hunters fired their weapons but failed to stop its attack. Realising this, Guru Hargobind jumped in front of the beast, without a sight of fear in his eyes, yelling that it must deal with him first. Raising his shield to prevent its jaws, as it leapt in the air, he killed the beast with just one powerful stroke. The animal fell dead at his feet and it was surprising that
While in Agra, the Jahangir became very ill. It seemed that nothing could cure him. Chandu Shah cornered the court astrologers and convinced them to tell the emperor that his illness was due to an inauspicious alignment of the stars which could only be cured if a holy man were to go to Gwalior Fort south of Agra and offer prayers for his recovery. Chandu Shah innocently suggested that there was no one more fit for this precious task than Guru Hargobind. Thus, at the emperor’s request, the Guru agreed and left for the Fort with several companions. Rather than being a sanctuary of tranquility, Gwalior Fort was really a prison where enemies of the state, including a number of Rajput princes, were detained. True to his nature, the Guru inspired them to join him in daily prayers and did his best to improve their conditions. In time, they came to hold in the highest regard for him. The governor of the fort, Hari Dass, was a Sikh and a follower of the Guru and hence, turned over to him a letter from Chandu Shah ordering him to poison the Guru. After the Guru had been in Gwalior Fort for several months, his Sikhs, including the ancient Baba Buddha, made the long journey from Amritsar to tell him how greatly they missed his presence. Although the emperor had recovered, still the Guru was held captive. At this time, Mian Mir, a noted Sufi saint, traveled to the emperor’s

court and asked him to release the Guru. Upon his persuasion, the emperor ordered Wazir Khan to free the Guru. Hari Dass informed the Guru of this fortunate turn of events; however, the Guru could not embrace his own fortune at the expense of the other prisoners and refused to leave the fort until all 52 of the Rajput princes were freed as well. When the Wazir Khan put the Guru’s condition in front of the emperor, he initially refused it. It was only when the Wazir Khan reminded the emperor that the Guru had saved his life that he relented. He added a condition of his own: in order to be released from the fort, each prisoner must be holding on to the Guru’s Chola (robe) as he walked out of the prison gates. The emperor was pleased with himself because he was sure that a mere handful would be able to fulfill this condition.

Unbeknownst to him however, the Guru delighted in this challenge by having his tailor make a special robe with 52 panels attached to it. At the appointed time, the Guru donned the heavy Chola, which stretched for yards behind him. The 52 princes each grasped a panel; 26 on the right and 26 on the left. Walking behind the Guru, careful not to let go, they stepped out into the sunlight and freedom, to the cheers of the Guru’s Sikhs. From this time on, Guru Hargobind was known as Bandi (prison) Chhor (liberator), and the day of liberation is celebrated as Bandi Chhor Divas (day). Several days later, when Guru Hargobind reached Amritsar, the Hindu festival of light, Diwali, was being celebrated. In their joy at seeing their Guru again, the people lit up the whole city with candles, lights, and lamps. After almost four hundred years, this tradition continues in Amritsar, and on this day

Hypothyroidism in dogs
I
n this month’s issue we will discuss a common condition seen in various dogs, known as ‘Hypothyroidism’. Before we dive into the details of when this condition may occur and methods
of diagnosing and treating it, we first would like to discuss what it really is. As in humans, animals also contain a thyroid gland. This gland makes various hormones known as Thyroxine
(T4) and Triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones play a major role in some of the physiologic effects that can be seen in your dog, such as increasing his or her metabolic rate; the amount of oxygen they consume; effects on their heart rate; aiding in producing red blood cells (erythropoiesis); effects on muscle and fat tissue; and many other functions. In Hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland does not produce enough of the thyroid hormones that it normally produces. Therefore, we see changes occur in our pet that can have detrimental consequences if not taken care of in time. It is more common to see older dogs develop and be diagnosed with Hypothyroidism. It can also be a congenital, meaning your pet may have been born with this condition, however it is extremely rare. Some of the most common signs you will see in your dog with this condition are: weight gain, obesity, lethargy (feeling very tired) and alopecia (losing patches of fur in certain areas). You may also see your pet to experience pyoderma, which is a skin condition that displays small lesions filled with pus. If any of these signs are seen in your dog, it is highly recommended to consult with your local veterinarian to provide your furry companion with the best care possible.
dog to your veterinarian, he or she may wish to conduct a few tests to determine if there is Hypothyroidism. First, a full physical examination will be conducted as routine procedure. Blood work will be taken to assess the levels and abnormalities present. The preferred ‘screening test’, as the veterinarians call it, is known as the Serum Total T4 level test. Dogs with normal T4 levels are not hypothyroid. Yet, dogs with low T4 levels may be considered to be hypothyroid. However, a screening test is used to first determine whether the patient is a candidate for the condition or disease in question. If the answer is yes, then further testing is required to diagnostically prove that this is a hypothyroid patient. Once your veterinarian has confirmed that your dog is indeed experiencing Hypothyroidism, an oral administration of a drug known as ‘Levothyroxine’ may be prescribed. healthy celebrations

iwali is a festive celebration where families and friends get together and eat a variety of flavourful food such as pakoray, samosa, jalebi, gulab jamun, butter chicken, shahi paneer, dal makhani and even mango shakes. Eating in moderation and choosing healthier options will help you and your family to reduce your risk of disease such as diabetes and heart disease. South Asians are 2-3x more likely to get heart disease and diabetes.
So when you are attending a Diwiali celebration and reach for a samosa, remember that is is like eating four teaspoons of sugar and about three teaspoons of fat. Pick up three pakoras and you are adding three more teaspoons of sugar and one more teaspoon of fat. Add something sweet and deep fried like a jalebi, and you are looking at six more teaspoons of sugar and almost three teaspoons of fat. Grab a cup of sweet chai made with homogenized milk, you are
drinking three teaspoons of sugar and one teaspoon of fat. This appetizer meal contains a grand total of sixteen teaspoons of sugar and eight teaspoons of fat.
During Diwali consider these healthy tips to reduce your intake of sugar and fat: • Balance your plate - half of your plate should be fruits and vegetables • If you choose to eat foods high in fat and sugar remember to take smaller portions and eat in moderation • Make water your choice of drink and cut back on sugary beverages • Eat a healthy snack before you leave home like an apple Eating foods high in unhealthy carbohydrates and unhealthy fats can take a toll on your body. Carbohydrates are used as fuel for our body, when eaten they are converted into energy. There are two types of carbohydrates: simple and complex. When simple carbohydrates are eaten in excess they can lead to diabetes, high cholesterol and weight gain. Simple carbohydrates are found in sweets, potatoes, roti, white pasta and noodles, pizza, white atta flour and rice. These foods spike blood sugar and digest quickly, leaving you hungry shortly after. Complex carbohydrates are found in whole grains, vegetables, dahls, nuts and seeds. They are high in fiber so they digest slowly, thus helping control blood sugars, managing weight and may also lower cholesterol. Fat is important for good health but remember not all fats are the same. Eat fats that are high in unsaturated fat to keep your heart healthy. Examples of unsaturated fats are canola, olive and mustard oil, nuts, and avocados. Avoid or limit fats that are high in saturated fats and trans fats to reduce your risk of heart disease. Examples of saturated fats include butter, cheese, coconut oil, ghee, buttermilk, and sour cream. Examples of dishes that are high in saturated fat use cream such as butter chicken, dal makhani and shahi paneer, and fried and processed food. Making small changes to your diet can make a huge impact on your health. How to style the six-yard wonder in the best ways All of us have an arsenal of our best sarees for the most important events and occasions where we must steal the show. You can go around and use your entire saree to create this skirt, or you can use the pallu to hang on your shoulder from the back for an even more interesting look. 5. Draped like a dress For a very modern and chic look, you can drape your saree in a very non-conventional way. To do this, you can wrap the pallu around your neck like a scarf to achieve a halter dress look. You can also skip the front pleats altogether to give the body of the saree a fish-cut look. With these tricks you can completely renew your saree and make it look like a brand new piece of clothing that will turn all heads at every party, all you have to do is be adventurous!

A harbinger of new beginnings Diwali, a festival of light, hope and happiness is one of the biggest cultural celebrations that take place in India. It is celebrated across the length and breadth of the country in diverse ways and with great enthusiasm. The festive fervour brought along Diwali is seen months before the occasion; people are excited, markets are decorated and the houses are illuminated with all sorts of beautiful lights. It’s a cultural extravaganza witnessed at its best. Diwali is not just a festival but a feeling that brings joy and happiness in the lives of many people. For some, the festival is associated with new clothes, shopping and a lot of festive food binging, for others it’s a reason to indulge in parties and gatherings, and for many it is that time of the year when they get their long due bonus and gifts at work that bring nothing but happiness. In short, a spirit of cheer and merriment engulfs every other person due to innumerable reasons. But do you know how and why this all started? Let’s take you to the roots of the festival.

The history of Diwali can be traced back to thousands of years in ancient India. There are various legends revolving around the origin of this festival. Some believe it to be

the celebration of the marriage of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, with Lord Vishnu and others believe it to be the birthday of goddess Lakshmi. The most widespread belief is that the festival is celebrated to mark the return of Lord Rama along with his wife, Sita and brother Lakshman, from a 14-yearlong exile to the kingdom of Ayodhya. To commemorate the return of their king, the people of the kingdom illuminated each and every household with earthen lamps and hence, the festival of lights was observed. For some the origin of the festival lays in Bengal, where the festival is dedicated to the worship of Kaali, the dark goddess of strength. The elephant-headed god and symbol of auspiciousness and wisdom Ganesha is also worshiped in most Hindu homes on this day along with goddess Lakshmi. For people who practice Jainism, Deepawali has the added significance as it is believed that it is on this day that Lord Mahavira attained the eternal bliss of

nirvana. They say there is no other country as diverse, secular and vibrant as India and so many stories and legends pertaining to just one festival leaves no doubt about it. We now take you on a journey and give you a glimpse of this festival through the eyes of a common Indian man. We bet you don’t know the reasons behind the celebrations across different parts of India and the significance of the celebrations. The significance of the five days of celebration Each day of celebration of the festival has its own tale to tell. As per the legends, the first day, Naraka Chaturdasi marks the conquering of the demon Naraka by Lord Krishna and his wife Satyabhama.This is followed by Amavasya, the second day of Deepawali, which marks the worship of Lakshmi as she is said to be in her most benevolent mood, fulfilling the wishes of her devotees. The no moon day or Amavasya also tells the story of Lord Vishnu, who, in his dwarf incarnation, overcame the bully Bali and banished him to hell. It is believed that Bali is allowed to return to earth once a year to light millions of lamps and dismiss darkness and ignorance while spreading the radiance of love and wisdom. On the third day, famously known as Kartika Shudda Padyami, it is said that Bali steps out of hell and rules the earth according to the boon given by Lord Vishnu. The fourth day is referred to as Yama Dvitiya (also called Bhai Dooj), and on this day sisters invite their brothers to their homes for a Teeka ceremony. This is similar to the spirit of Rakshabandhan wherein, the brothers vows to protect the sister. Diwali also instills charity in the hearts of people. Govardhan Puja, a commemoration by Vaishnavites, on the fourth day of Diwali is observed by feeding the poor on an incredible scale. The fifth day is observed as Dhanteras wherein many indulge in gambling and consider it to be auspicious. The Hindi word ‘Dhan’ means wealth and ‘Teras’ stands for the 13th. This celebration of wealth and prosperity occurs two days before the festival of lights. Card parties are a big trend due to this day. The tradition of gambling on Diwali also has a legend behind it. It is believed that on this day, Goddess Parvati played dice with her husband Lord Shiva. She decreed that whosoever gambled on Diwali night would prosper throughout the ensuing year. The significance of lights and firecrackers Every ritual practiced on Diwali has its significance and a story behind it. Homes are illuminated with lights, and firecrackers fill the skies as an expression of respect to the heavens for the attainment of health, wealth, knowledge, peace, and prosperity. As per a belief, the sound of firecrackers indicates the joy of the people living on earth, making the gods aware of their plentiful state. many insects, including mosquitoes, which are plentiful after the rains. However, with the alarming rise of global warming and pollution levels, this practice should be discouraged. The spiritual significance of Diwali Beyond the lights, gambling, and fun, Diwali is also a time to reflect on life and make changes for the upcoming year. With that, there are several customs that revelers hold dear each year. 1. Give and forgive: It is common practice that people forget and forgive the wrongs done by others during Diwali. There is an air of freedom, festivity, and friendliness everywhere. 2. Rise and shine: Waking up during the Brahmamuhurta (at 4 a.m., or one and a half hour before sunrise) is a great blessing from the standpoint of health, ethical discipline, efficiency in work, and spiritual advancement. The sages who instituted this Deepawali custom may have hoped that their descendants would realise its benefits and make it a regular habit in their lives. 3. Unite and unify: Diwali is a unifying event, and it can soften even the hardest of hearts. It is a time when people mingle about in joy and embrace one another. 4. Prosper and progress: On this day, Hindu merchants in North India open their new account books and pray for success and prosperity during the coming year. People buy new clothes for the family. Employers, too, purchase new clothes for their employees. Homes are cleaned and decorated by day and illuminated by night with earthen oil lamps. 5. Illuminate your inner self: The lights of Diwali also signify a time of inner illumination of the soul. It is an opportunity to cultivate and enjoy eternal bliss. 6. Moving from darkness into light: The light empowers us to commit ourselves to good deeds. It was a hit, and Ajay’s winning streak started there. “Luckily, I never had to go through struggle in my life. Everything just fell in place. The thing I learnt from my journey is to work hard,” Ajay told in an interview, adding that he doesn’t believe in comparing himself with others, and doesn’t look back but “look at today”. “I don’t get carried away by success too much or bogged down by failure,” said the actor, who is married to Kajol.
How does he detach himself from his stardom? “I don’t think about it. I don’t care about it. I don’t go out much. I don’t show my power. I think both (Kajol and him) don’t care about it. We are happy in our space,” he said. Hollywood star Ben Affleck went on record to say that he doesn’t want his kids to pay price for his fame. Cookies Deep-fried olives Coat feta-stuffed olives with juniperflavoured breadcrumbs to make these easy canapés. Serve on skewers with a lemon and vermouth mayonnaise on the side
Ingredients 4 100g panko or coarse dried breadcrumbs 44 crushed juniper berries 4160g feta-stuffed olives 43 tbsp plain flour 41 egg, beaten 4300ml vegetable oil
For the lemon and vermouth mayo 42 tsp dry vermouth 4100g mayonnaise 41 tsp lemon juice
Method 4 Crush the breadcrumbs in a bag using a rolling pin or in a food processor. Tip into a shallow dish with the berries, then season and set aside. Toss the olives in the flour. Put the beaten egg in a large bowl, add the coated olives and move them around to coat. Turn them one by one in the breadcrumb mixture, then put on a plate until ready to fry. 4 Heat the oil in a large pan to 180C, then fry the olives for 1-2 mins, or until golden and sizzling. Drain on kitchen paper and leave to cool for a few mins as they’ll be very hot inside. 4 To make the lemon and vermouth mayo, mix the vermouth with the mayonnaise and lemon juice. Serve the warm, deep-fried olives alongside the mayo.

Directions • In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until blended. Beat in eggs and vanilla. In a small bowl, whisk flour, baking soda
and salt; gradually beat into butter mixture. Stir in chocolate chips and walnuts. • Shape 1/4 cupful’s of dough into balls. Flatten each to 3/4-in. thickness (2-1/2-in. diameter), smoothing edges as necessary. Place in an airtight container, separating layers with waxed paper or parchment; refrigerate, covered, overnight. • To bake, place dough portions 2 in. apart on parchment-lined baking sheets; let stand at room temperature 30 minutes before baking. receipe not recd Ingredients 4 Powdered sugar for filling 3 cups 4Mawa (khoya) 500 grams 4 Desiccated coconut 3 1/4 teaspoons 4 Cashewnuts blanched and chopped 15 4 Almonds blanched and chopped 15 4Raisins 20 4 Green cardamom powder 1/2 teaspoon FOR COVERING 4Refined flour (maida) 4 cups 4Ghee 5 tablespoons 4Salt 1/2 teaspoon Method Step 1 Mash khoya and roast it in a deep pan on medium heat till pink. Take off the heat and let it cool. Add all the other filling ingredients to the khoya and keep aside. Step 2 To prepare the covering, sieve flour and salt and rub in five tablespoons of ghee. Step 3 Cover it with a moist cloth and keep aside for fifteen minutes. Divide the dough into small balls and roll each ball into a small puri of four inches diameter. Step 4 Spread a puri on a greased gujiya mould and fill a tablespoon of the filling mixture on one side. Moisten the edges of the puri and fold one side of the mould over the other. Step 5 Press the edges and remove the excess dough and reuse. Prepare all the gujiyas and spread on a damp cloth. Step 6 Heat sufficient ghee in a deep pan and deep-fry the gujiyas, in batches on medium heat, till golden brown. Step 7 Drain onto an absorbent paper. Cool and store in an airtight tin. God knew why Baljit’s eyes were so tired either because of his bad health or for any other sorrow of his life and what he was thinking. I was sad for handing Amrit over to my sister, but I was happy because my mom, dad and brother had got a hope to come to Canada because of my sacrifice. We had two adjacent rooms booked in the same hotel. We checked in the hotel and set our luggage in our rooms. Then, we had dinner in the hotel restaurant. We were quiet for most of the time. Meenu didn’t look up even for a moment. Baljit too was looking somewhere else. Amrit was looking at me with tired eyes quizzically. Casting a fake smile with secret indications, I was trying to convince him that what was happening was the best for all of us. But Amrit wasn’t able to accept the reality. Well,
after having dinner, we went into our separate rooms. Amrit’s sad face was flashing before my eyes time and time again. Baljit went into the washroom, changed his clothes, came out and lay on the bed. Then I did the same. I switched off the main light. I lay on my back looking at the ceiling of the room. Two side-table lamps were lit. Each was emitting light like a candle. Baljit was lying on the bed motionless looking at the ceiling. A number of questions began arising in my mind. “Baljit, are you ok?” finally I mustered courage to ask him after almost twenty minutes. I got no response. “Now, you will also be able to move to Canada and live with your parents.”, I said very politely. I waited for his response again for almost five to seven minutes.

hy is it just studies that we should focus on when it comes to bringing up a child? As the kids grow, along with studies, extra-curricular activities play a vital role. There are seemingly various options and activities to get your kids excited about, from soccer to music and painting to dance. So, the question arises, how are children be benefited from such activities? Here, I have listed some reasons, that why should kids participate in activities, beyond the matter of the fact, just to list it on their CV.
Extracurricular activities can foster an open mind These activities will provide an opportunity for the kids to explore the environment that they will not be able to encounter at home or even in school. Once they step out often and interact with different kinds of individuals, they will be exposed to new ideas and interests and may indulge in innovation, creation and many such facets. It is also a very great way to encourage curiosity. Researches have indicated that volunteering and community service broadens a child’s perspective of the world. The perks of extracurricular activities just not include building relationships but also thinking and leading a path for their future. Indulging in activities after-school is great way for kids to spend time in a non-academic environment with their peers. This will allow them to build optimistic relationships at a common space with others, and that too, when they share a mutual interest. Such extracur-

Salman Khan ‘will definitely have a release on Eid’ next year
Salman Khan’s planned Eid 2020 release “Inshallah” may have been shelved, but the superstar insists he will have a release on the festival next year. “Yes, we will definitely have a release on Eid. ‘Dabangg 3’ is scheduled to release in December and after that we will have another film releasing on Eid,” declared Salman, while interacting with the media at the red carpet of IIFA Awards 2019 in Mumbai.

e did not divulge any further details of his new plans for an Eid 2020 release, but confirmed he is not a part of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Inshallah” any more. “Now, ‘Inshallah’ is not being made but inshallah, I will work on some other film. I can say that it (Bhansali’s film) is not being made with me,” clarified Salman, who was accompanied with “Dabangg 3” debutante Saiee Manjrekar at the IIFA awards night. “Inshallah” was supposed to star Salman Khan with Alia Bhatt, but the actor backed out of the project, reportedly due to creative differences with Bhansali. Subsequently, there was a buzz that Salman’s other upcoming biggie, “Kick 2” would make it to the theatres for Eid 2020. However, that film’s director Sajid Nadiadwala soon came out to declare that his film would not be ready by then. The speculation about “Kick 2” had gained ground because of a cryptic tweet Salman posted shortly after “Inshallah” was shelved, for his fans. “Itna mat sochna mere baare mein, Dil mein aata hoon.. aur Eid pe bhi (Don’t worry about me, I live in your heart.. and also arrive on Eid),” went Salman’s tweet, taking off from a dialogue in his Eid 2014 blockbuster “Kick”. Meanwhile, Salman will soon begin shooting for “Bigg Boss” 13. Talking about attending IIFA awards for the first time in Mumbai, Khan said: “It is really good because it is near the house, so I feel good to be here. Otherwise, we used to fly to faraway destinations to perform at IIFA” About performing live on stage, he said: “I still feel nervous while performing on stage. Letting kids choose what they wear but, your way!
P
arenting is inarguably a very hard job, and it gets harder when there are some unexpected curveballs. You may have to juggle between household chores, your job, and making lunch for the picky eater while also doing a million other tasks. Adding to the misery, when kids start going to play school, they realise they want to dress up on their own. No longer do they need their favourite soft toy, they need to wear the latest top they got in their favourite colour when it is freezing outside and it is no less than a challenge to cater to all their requirements. It is a challenge to let kids dress how they want to, but here is how you can be a great parent and let them express
themselves while also making sure they are safe and comfortable. 1. Do not argue, give them options Children don’t take nicely to being told ‘no’, telling them no makes sure they resist you. The trick is to make them think they are making the decisions; instead of letting them run to the wardrobe, give them three to four pre-picked outfits to choose from. This makes them feel as if they are making the calls themselves. This saves you time, and a morning argument with an unrelenting child. 2. Accommodate their tastes Your child is developing their own tastes and habits, and it is important to let them set these boundaries and respect them. If your child does not like the feel of wooly fabric, or the colour yellow, then you must not ask them to do it against their will. They can instead wear something in a colour or fabric which they like. 3. Let them do it themselves Children must learn that picking the outfit is only one part of getting dressed. The real challenge is to start putting on the outfit they have selected so carefully. Teach them to put on their own clothes, most kids start picking up this habit by age 4. Eventually they will start wearing t-shirts as they realise

they are the easiest to put on. 4. Preplan the outfits, yours and theirs The worst part of a morning argument isn’t how annoyed you are, but that you are running late. To avoid wasting precious time, get your clothes out the night before and ask your kid to do the same. It is easier for your child to follow with an example, and by picking out clothes the night before you can avoid the early morning fuss altogether. 5. Layer it, but gently Children do not realise how not dressing appropriately according to the weather might be harmful for them, which is why they wear what they want to. If your child wants to wear a fullsleeved sweater on a hot day, make them wear a tank top underneath as underclothes. This way they can ask you to take off the sweater when they are hot. Similarly, carry a jacket when your toddler refuses to put on warm clothes. These tricks will help you understand what your child wants, and give it to them. By respecting the wishes of your child you let them establish independence, which is an important part of raising your children to be confident.

Rajkummar Rao thrilled for his film with Priyanka Chopra
Actor Rajkummar Rao, who will be soon collaborating with Priyanka Chopra for the Netflix film “The White Tiger”, has said that he is looking forward to working with her. He also hoped that they will have good time while shooting for the film.

ajkummar was interacting with the media at the trailer launch of “Made In China” along with his co-actor Mouni Roy, film’s director Mikhil Musale and producer Dinesh Vijan in Mumbai last month. “The White Tiger” is an adaptation of Aravind Adiga’s Man Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name. Sharing his thoughts about the project, Rajkummar said: “I am very excited about that film. It’s a great book and has a beautiful story. I have met (director) Ramin (Bahrani). He is a great guy. I am really looking forward to start working with Priyanka in the film. I think Priyanka is phenomenally talented, so we will have a good time together while shooting the film.”
Bahrani, who will also write the screenplay, is known for films like “Chop Shop”, “99 Homes” and “Fahrenheit 451”. “Made In China” will see the Rajkummar Rao essay the lead role of a Gujarati businessman named Raghu who becomes successful thanks to ‘jugaad’. Talking about his character in “Made In China”, Rajkummar said: “Raghu is one
of the exciting parts that I have played. I played a Gujarati businessman in ‘Kai Po Che’ but it was a subtle character, but in this film I had a chance to go all out. I stayed in Ahmadabad to prepare for my role. Our film’s director (Mikhil Musale) has been brought up in Gujarat and I feel we were able to create such a beautiful world that I started smelling Gujarat in my film’s script. ewly crowned US Open teenage champion Bianca Andreescu feels her hard work has finally paid off after she stunned 23-time major champion Serena Williams 6-3, 7-5 in the final held in New York. “I was feeling many, many things before the match, more than any other match. In the finals, playing against Serena was overwhelming. I just tried to breathe as much as I could from the

I
Death of young brother creates a project that’s helping thousands in India
t isn’t every day that one gets a chance to make a difference in a stranger’s life. Sometimes the only silver lining tragedies have are that they give one huge opportunity for change. Change that can make a difference in the lives of thousands.
Many individuals in Houston and Vancouver were inspired by the work being done by those involved with this organisation, and their compassion for those in need. Through the Gift a Vision project, we aim to help children who may be hindered by a lack of resources and basic medical attention to reach their full potential. We always look forward to working with other organizations and learning from their experiences.
Life is no longer taken for granted. If the death is unexpected, there may have been loose ends in the relationship that have not been dealt with. The death of a sibling brings upon a search for meaning. We may ask ourselves if we are accomplishing the goals that we have set for ourselves.
This year, FFCF has set their goals high. They plan to provide 500+ free cataract eye surgeries under Gift a Sight, and hope to provide vision tests to 20,000 children under the Gift a Vision project. The ones requiring surgery will be shifted to the Gift a Sight project, while free eyeglasses will be given to those who need them (1 in every 25 children is the ratio we have found). The approximate cost for both the projects comes out to be $40,000. A surgery is approx $50 per person, while the eyeglasses cost $3 per person.
Yogesh Bhatia was a new immigrant in 2010, and had only been in Canada for 6 months when he lost his younger brother (a military pilot in India) in a crash at the India- China border. In a few moments, his life changed drastically. “My brother was commissioned in the Indian Army in 1997 & lost his life in 2010. He was the most loved one because he was the youngest. I still remember my days of school when I would carry him on my old cycle” says Yogesh. “In 2010, before my family immigrated to Canada, we stayed with him for 25 days in Bangalore. The day we took off from Bangalore was the very same day he left for Sikkim where his unit was. That was the last I saw him... 20th September 2010, around 3 am.” His brother’s helicopter crashed in April 2010. Yogesh Bhatia and his family got on a plane as soon as they heard the news of the crash. By the time they reached India, Lt. Colonel Nitin Bhatia had been found dead. In his grief, Yogesh turned to the thing him and his only brother had loved doing as young men: charity work. The first man he helped had incredible pain in his eyes. The place that man and Yogesh met? Nitin’s funeral. Initially, the family used their personal funds. Then, some donations from friends started coming in. Slowly, but surely, the charity work grew-- all with the word of mouth. Well, what exactly does he use these funds for? Several things, as it turns out. Over the years more projects have opened up under FFCF, but the majority are used to provide cataract surgeries to the extremely impoverished in India, under a project known as Gift of Sight. Yogesh founded the non-profit organisation – Friends for Cause Foundation (FFCF) – in 2012 in Canada and flies to India every year to carry out the project. He makes sure

that the process follows all medical guidelines of Government of India – from picking out people on the streets to having their vision tested, and having the surgeries done on those who require it; it is all planned and executed under his guidance. Providing a vision test and a pair of glasses fall under the project “Gift a Vision”, whereas providing a surgery if required falls under the project “Gift of Sight”. The Indian community has also come to trust Yogesh’s work and started helping him to collect funds for Gift a Sight Project. Yogesh has also been able to partner up with various organisations here in Canada and in India who help him raise funds and awareness when he implements this project. People with great financial need are given priority and they are provided with the necessary care as soon as possible. To date, 1,527 people have been provided with free cataract surgeries and over 10,000 people have been provided with free eyeglasses. Friends for Cause is organising Joy of Giving, a charity dinner, on Friday, Oct 4th at Dhaliwal Banquet Hall, with the help and support of the Indian Cultural Association Vancouver (ICA Vancouver). Neeraj President of ICA Vancouver says that his organisation found a true cause to support in India. And he is proud that their group has been able to make huge difference for Gift of Sight Projects. “We request others to come forward
and join us because together we can make a great difference in the lives of those less privileged than us,’’ says Mani Arora another member of ICA Vancouver. FFCF also has huge support from the youth. The Campaign Manager, Tanmai Bhatia, makes sure to present many talented young acts in the Joy of Giving (their annual charity dinner) , as well as giving youth an opportunity to volunteer. A result is a charity event like no other you might have seen- a charity event runs entirely by youth volunteers. The youth group of FFCF hopes to make a big impact on the lives of many by providing them with the resources that they would not have had access to otherwise. “Through the Gift a Vision and Gift Of Sight projects, we provide children in countries such as India freedom from the struggles eye problems can cause. With our help, children who couldn’t see the board have been able to go back to school, parents who lost jobs because of eye problems have been able to work again. Theirs are the struggles we can’t comprehend, living here in Canada. Our other projects are not so public yet, but I have huge plans for Gift A Life Project. We are funding some dozen children right now through school, and plan to expand this project to help hundreds, if not thousands, of children, go to school,” says Tanmai Bhatia, Yogesh’s daughter, about her future plans for FFCF.
India has the highest number of blind people in the world. The issues start with early childhood. Uncorrected vision can have a big impact on children’s lives. If a child’s vision is not corrected while they are in school, they may find it hard to break free from the poverty cycle due to lack of education and eventually become blind in old age due to poverty. An eye exam and a pair of glasses can set off a chain reaction that dramatically improves their lives. “Gift A Vision is a critical step in transforming their future,’’ says Sapna, Yogesh’s wife and co-founder of FFCF. “They can get educated and help their family. There is so much potential in this generation and the waste of such potential is not something that sits easy”, says Navtej, a wellknown realty broker and a steadfast donor to FFCF projects. Another great supporter Mr Major Ghag had been to India during 2017 project and again joining Yogesh this year. He says his life changed drastically after Volunteering in the Gift Of Sight Projects in India. Joy of Giving, our Charity Dinner is being held on Friday, Oct 4th at Dhaliwal Banquet Hall. 500 tickets have been sold, but we welcome all who wish to come to buy a ticket at the door ($40 per person) and support Friends For Cause Foundation in its dedicated work.

Cont. from last Issue After researching about How To Improve Your Health With Technology and with more and more of us using technology in our daily lives, we became curious about the impact of technology on the human body. And not just with the use of smart phones by your ear, but beyond this. On the whole, surely it’s a good thing? But there must be some negatives too? Combining our position at the coal-face of consumer tech, we enlisted the help of Dr Jet Khasriya, an NHS-registered and private GP for GPDQ (the UK’s first doctor-on-demand app) to investigate.
How does technology affect the human body?
Simpler days versus modern medicine: During meetings, doctors often debate the impact of technology on the human body, and there are broadly two camps: the traditionalists who want a return to the long forgotten “simpler days”, and the modernists who embrace the rapidly changing landscape of modern medicine. Whatever your view, there are compelling arguments on both sides and I would place myself somewhere in the middle. While I appreciate technology and the possibilities it brings to the lives of mankind, I am less enthralled with the way that it has influenced individuals in recent times. As you’re sitting on the tube, or enjoying a coffee, take a look around you right now and count how many people (including you) are glued to a screen at this very moment. Nobody can deny that technology pervades almost every living moment, in some cases permeating our very essence. Given the rapid advances we have seen recently, we must acknowledge what effects (good and bad) technology is having on our bodies and our health.
The Good Improved medicine makes us live longer On a macroscopic level, technology is doing great: we’re living longer with advances in healthcare, pharmacology and molecular biology. Modern medicine has effectively doubled the average human lifespan in a little over a century. When we get sick, what can’t a modern doctor do? On a normal day at work we could spot an early cancer and have it staged within two weeks, work out someone’s risk of having a stroke or a heart attack and then reduce it with the click of a button, inject medicine into a joint to make it move again and prescribe a pill that, for a depressed patient, would make life worth living again. There was a time, not long ago, when snapping your cruciate ligament would result in a lifetime of disability leading to

misery and sometimes poverty. Such an injury is now a badge of honour amongst wealthy middleclass skiers and would cause no more than an inconvenient visit to the doctor.
Self-diagnosing with Dr Google Whereas in the past, people had to depend primarily on their doctors for information and advice about their health, now the Internet has evolved, stepping in as an amazing resource for those seeking health-related information. Dr Google has fuelled a certain amount of hypochondria around personal health but it has led to patients feeling more involved in their health choices. Medical data is frequently being published online and Google is currently taking steps to make symptomsearching less scary by adding sensible medical advice, written by its own team of doctors.
“Am I sick?” Ape selfdiagnosing via Google Studies predict that within ten years a medical check-up could involve more interaction with sensors, cameras and robotic scanning devices than human doctors and nurses, as healthcare organisations rebuild services around the Internet of Things (IoT). Using app-based and wearable tools to monitor your health and even carry out your own scans, patients will finally have the ability to self-diagnose a wide number of conditions at home, without needing to visit a surgery or hospital.
Tech gadgets enhance health and fitness As the health tech revolution continues to develop at pace,
it has become easier for us to access our health metrics through our smart devices. This information can be extrapolated, and AI can suggest changes which could improve your health and help to manage health conditions. From fitness bands to smart watches and sensors, and tech with medical applications like blood glucose monitors, health tech is now being widely adopted by many people who want to take personal responsibility for their health. For example, using a smart scale which hooks up to an app, enabling you to track your weight loss goals and progress. Many health commitments fail because of lack of focus or because we struggle to fit them into our day to day lives. But with fitness gadgets, we can find motivation by setting ourselves daily goals and activity reminders to move more.
The Bad Smart phones cause ‘musculoskeletal problems’ If we narrow our focus we get a snapshot of the ‘trickle down’ effects that technological advancement is having on our daily health. The single biggest culprit may be the device you are reading this article on right now: your smart phone – a device which allows us to communicate with anyone in the world, have access to almost all known human knowledge, and which guides our health decisions daily – a device which we are hopelessly addicted to. This ubiquitous gadget might be harming your health and there seems to be more and more evidence to support this theory.
With increased usage of smart phones, tablets and laptops, more people are visiting their doctors with musculoskeletal complaints such as ‘tech neck’ (neck strain) or ‘text claw’ (tenosynovitis). Scrolling on Instagram for hours and incessant text messaging is negatively affecting our posture and putting pressure on our necks and backs. The repetitive motor activity of texting and grasping our smart phones can cause muscle tension and pain in our forearms, wrists and fingers.
Sleep deprivation and screen strain There is evidence that our daily ‘screen time’ has multiple negative effects on our mental health, causing sleep disturbance, headaches and mood problems including generalised anxiety disorder and depression. Staring at a screen for too long can exhaust our sight, causing our vision to become blurry, and drying out our eyes. You may also experience tension headaches as another result of digital eye strain. Research shows that excessive tech use – particularly right before bedtime – can have an adverse impact on our sleep cycles thanks to the glowing light that’s emitted from screens.

Spotted Lake Location: Northwest of Osoyoos, British Columbia One of the most beautiful and distinct looking lakes you would ever witness is this polka-dotted body-of-water. he trick never fails. Put a Bollywood leading man in a woman’s garb, and watch the box-office rock. Kamal Haasan did it in “Chachi 420” and there was Govinda’s “Aunty No. 1”. Actors from Amitabh Bachchan, Mithun Chakraborty and Rishi Kapoor to Aamir, Salman and Shah Rukh Khan, and Akshay Kumar, couldn’t resist the odd dance in drag, or the random comic scene. Jog your memory further, and you’re thinking Shammi Kapoor and Biswajit, too. In “Dream Girl”, it is the turn of Ayushmann Khurrana, new-age darling of the multiplexes, to invoke girl power and woo the box-office. His act is slightly different from most of what Bollywood heroes have done so far within the theme. Although Ayushmann also gets to play out a sariclad naari in parts, the crux of his role lies in impersonating a woman’s voice. Debutant director Raaj Shaandilyaa uses that idea to touch upon the contemporary malady of loneliness. In an era of frenzied social media following, it is often ironic how one is left with no actual friends in life. Ayushmann as smalltown boy Karamvir Singh finds a lucrative job-op thanks to that sad reality. Son of a debt-ridden, middle-class shopowner (Annu Kapoor) in Mathura, who sells items for Hindu last rites, Karam accidentally stumbles upon a call centre for sex chats. His knack at mimicking a woman’s voice lets him assume the sultry, imaginary avatar of Pooja for lonely callers. Life is a cruise for a while, and the moolah rolls. The trouble starts when Pooja’s regular bunch of callers start falling in love with her voice. To add to Karam’s woes, many of these callers turn out to be people he knows closely. While on funny moments, the film has enough of them to keep you regaled. As a comedy, the film’s winnability lies in its writing - especially the dialogues. To Shaandilyaa’s credit, he resists giving in to bawdy slapstick that films of this genre often tend to succumb to while passing off a man as a woman. The writing manages to keep melodrama at bay too, despite the obvious tragicomic undercurrent about Karam’s reality. The trouble is there isn’t much of a story to narrate, over nearly two hours and 15 minutes of runtime. The funny lines and the often hilarious situations spawned out of Karam’s quandary don’t seem to carry the story anywhere beyond a point. Post interval, the narrative becomes a routine about Pooja being chased by her assorted bunch of lovers, and how she desperately tries to outsmart them, till the film draws to a rather predictable end. It could all have seemed rather mediocre despite the random laughs, but for a few brilliant performances. Ayushmann and Annu Kapoor stand out in particular. For Ayushmann, “Dream Girl” is an assurance to his fans that he is wholly capable of turning on the mainstream mojo. Ayushmann’s reunion with his “Vicky Donor” co-star Annu Kapoor once again triggers off comic chemistry. This time pitted as a father-son duo, whose relationship is fated to see a bizarre twist in the second half. “Dream Girl” is your film if you are looking for a couple of hours packed with feel-good fun. Only, don’t go in looking for deeper nuances just because the film flaunts Ayushmann Khurrana as its hero - there are none. Source: IANS
