Thanksgiving Day (Canada)
T
hanksgiving Day is an annual Canadian holiday. Initially it was decided to occurring on the second Monday in October, which celebrates the harvest and other blessings of the past year. Thanksgiving in Canada is celebrated on the second Monday of October each year and it’s an official statutory holiday - except in PEI, Newfoundland, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia - however federally regulated institutions do observe Thanksgiving in those provinces too. In the US thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday in November. The original idea is to give thanks for the past harvest season but for many Canadian families the tradition has changed over time and the focus is now to get together with family and eat a large turkey dinner. Apple cider is a must for any traditional thanksgiving celebration as well as turkey stuffing and pumpkin pie. The first Thanksgiving holiday was held in Canada in 1872 to celebrate the recovery of the Prince of Wales from a serious

illness. After 1879 celebrations were held every year but not always in October - it used to be observed around Armistice Day in November. At the Crawford Lake

History: In response to a downturn in the economy, a coalition of churches opened a food cupboard in Surrey in 1981. Two years later, in June 1983, the Surrey Food Bank Society was formed and opened up in a dilapidated building on King George Highway Surrey. The location and the Society itself were deemed to be temporary measures until the economy turned around for the betterment and people could get back to work. The small sapling planted 3.5 decades back, has blossomed into a banyan tree. The salient features of this beloved organization are: • an 8,000 sq. ft. warehouse in Whalley, • a fleet of five vehicles, • a lift truck, • 400 active volunteers – the back bone • and a staff core of fifteen. The Surrey Food Bank Society currently distributes approximately 2,000 food hampers each week and has expanded support to many other internal programs, agencies and is affiliated with many different food security programs, such as the Food Action Coalition. When I asked Kuldip K Ardawa Community Partnership Manager Surrey, on my maiden visit to this location, she added “After 34 years we have come to the realization that people will always need our help. We like to say we give people a “hand up, not a hand out”. The Surrey Food Bank provides free

It is abnormal not to have much South Asians on screens. We need more people.” Radhika also expressed that people should not only dream of Hollywood but also fight for equal representation in the world. “I want our generation to

This cliched way of thinking should be broken,” she added. The PadMan actress also explained how this showbiz industry works. She said, “Industry is not only driven by talent, it depends upon so many factors. If you need to be successful in this field, one should know how to convert everything into a plus point. If you have a dusky face, make that your plus point. One should know how to compete with challenges like gender and age. A SIMPLE WAY TO UNDERSTAND LIFE INSURANCE Sandeep Ahuja
W
e all have often heard about Life Insurance from financial advisors and insurance agents. While most of us must have felt the need for life insurance at some point of time; purchasing it may seem to be a complicated matter for many people, mainly because of lack of clarity about the concept and its features. Some of the most common questions about life insurance have been answered below. I hope that it will help you in understanding the concept more clearly and may assist you in taking a wise decision in this direction. What does ‘Life Insurance’ mean? Life insurance is a financial resource that the insurer promises to provide to the loved ones of the ‘life insured’ in case he dies. Meaning of Beneficiary: Beneficiary is the person to whom the financial benefit will be paid upon the death of the insured. You can choose your beneficiary and can change him as per your wish. Who needs life insurance? Your need to purchase insurance depends upon your personal and financial circumstances. If you have dependents such as your spouse, children, elderly parent/relative or, if you don’t have enough savings to cover your final expenses or inflation in economy; you should consider purchasing life insurance. Unmindful of your marital status (single/ married), life insurance is equally useful for everybody. It is vital both for the rich and the poor. While for the rich, it helps in estate creation after their death; for the poor, it acts as a valuable financial resource to cater to the needs of their family. Which is the appropriate age to purchase life insurance? The sooner you purchase, the better it is. You can purchase insurance for a new born baby up to the age of 80 years. Though you can chose to purchase insurance at comparatively higher premium rates at a later age if you have enough savings at that time, the best time to purchase insurance is when you are young since due to better health, you have to pay low premiums. It is especially good for young children because of their insurability. Which choices are available? As per your needs and
financial capability, you can choose any plan out of different available options such as Term Life, Whole Life, Universal Life or Variable Life. While on one hand, Term Life plan offers protection with minimum expenses but limited features, Universal Life plan offers most comprehensive coverage and features by investing more payment in the premiums. How much coverage should you buy? Though there is no specified amount, as a thumb rule, it’s usually recommended that you should purchase coverage up to 15–20 times your annual income. As a matter of fact, the amount also depends upon your circumstances/liabilities such a mortgage payment etc. Are medical exams a necessary part of purchasing insurance? While different carriers have different requirements for medical exam, most insurers have made provision for ‘no requirement’ of medical exam for coverage between $100,000 and $500,000. But, age does affect the requirement of basic blood and urine tests. Also, your health history and your insurer’s underwriting guidelines partly affect this requirement. How can we reduce the cost of life insurance? You can achieve this by: purchasing insurance when you are young, shopping around for comparative prices and coverage, opting for higher coverage amounts, adopting a healthy life style and, by paying premiums up-front. How can the beneficiary/insured use the premium? The beneficiary has the liberty to use the financial assistance for any purpose as per his needs/requirement such as mortgage on the home. Depending upon the insurance plan, the insured can also utilize the policy for any required purpose such as children’s college education. Is it possible to include one’s parents and children in the insurance policy? You can certainly include your parents and children in the insurance policy. You can include them in the form of a rider or, can purchase stand alone policy for them. Can I replace my existing policy? In the first place, it is never advisable to change your policy. You must always think ten times before taking such action since a two-year contestability period and twoyear suicide clause will be applicable to the new policy. But, even if you encounter any changes in life such as marriage/divorce, birth of child, change of health, home purchase, career promotion,

value’ It is the amount of money given back by the insurer if you want to surrender/give up your policy. I hope, the above mentioned points should have given you a fair idea about the concept and features of Life Insurance. As an independent insurance advisor working through Punjab Insurance Agency, I deal with different insurance companies offering plans for different types of insurance. I can explain to you in detail, the insurance plan options and coverage that are suitable for your needs and resources. Why Buddies Lose Interest in each other and…….
Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun)
T
LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Health Coach of University of Victoria
hough like me, many are over the hill and well settled in life, yet, millions must be seeking that special person who is right for them. But if you’ve been through enough relationships, you begin to think erroneously that there’s no right person, just different shades of wrong doers. Our inexperience or experience plays a vital role in this regard. Some are experienced on this front. When we meet someone new, down the lane of time, we get swayed by our initial emotions[infatuation] and many do not hesitate to repeatedly declare that things are going great. But once the honeymoon of this upcoming friendship/ relationship is over, we start finding the chinks and we are left wondering. Then we start replaying the chronological chain of events and look for answers to the million-dollar question(s): • What went wrong? • Did I spoil the relationship? •D id other side spoil the relationship? • Why relationship is getting sour? • Am I dealing with a cheat? In case you like the company of a new friend, and like to spend time together with – to explore further possibilities- but the other side is slowly losing interest or has lost interest, then relax, you are not alone. Always remember, Life is a gamble. One has to take a calculated risk to the best of ones’ ability. Everyone passes through the corridor of uncertainty where luck factor plays its role at least 30% to find a soul mate. I hope you are nodding, otherwise
When someone engage with you, love and respect your feelings, then his/ her body language and the style of talking about you on your back or with you is entirely different and appreciable” then you too give this bonding a serious look. The only rider is, you must have the trained eye to read between the lines and take proper cudgels so as to ensure that you are not delivered sugar- coated -quinine of cheating. If your calculations are correct, you will feel protected, comfortable and enjoy the bliss of life.

then, why are relationships ending in separation. Let us delve deep into the possible reasons as to why people suddenly lose interest and remedial measures there of, to prevent it from happening again? Low in confidence: One of the most common reasons people lose interest is because the person they’re dating lacks confidence. Confidence counts for a lot in every walk of life. Lack of self-confidence may not be obvious right from the start, which is why two people could go out a few times before one person has a change of heart as Cupid strikes. What can be done about it? Boost your confidence! High self-esteem results from being comfortable in your own skin, shun nervousness and try to be normal. Ask yourself, what parts of your life do you want to work upon? If you feel apprehensive about your body, prioritize getting in shape. If you are insecure about your job, enroll in courses that will get you to your desired profession. Such remedial measures will boost your esteem. Keep in mind, there are few things you cannot change. In that case, tackle what’s manageable and accept the things not under your control. Do not be in a tearing hurry to seek relationship: Some people are desperately seeking a relationship. They are unhappy on their own and are in a tearing hurry to find someone to spend their life with. Dating partners who quickly pick up, a buddy, may not get satisfactory outcome. Well-rounded individuals, by contrast, are confident and as such comfortable on their own. Such type of people is skilled, knowledgeable in a lot of different things, or something that covers a lot of different areas or subjects. An example of a wellrounded person is someone who is good in school, plays sports and has a good relationship with his family and friends. What can be done about it? If you find yourself in this situation, talk to yourself. Do a SWOT analysis of your personality. Seek help from others in the know. Have sittings with your counselor. Make amends, wherever warranted. A positive attitude always realigns your personality and make you more confident. Kick away fear of failure. In case you cannot work on these lines, then come to terms with the idea of remaining single for the time being. Once you feel confident and comfortable with this notion, time is opportune to start a healthy partnership. It could be difficult, at the outset, to accept this possibility but it will force you to reflect on who you want to
become as an individual. Then, when the time is right, that special person will come into your life and join in chorus, “happy days are here again.”. When timing is not right: If none of the above work for you then perhaps – may be-the partner lost interest because the timing wasn’t right. Continue to have high confidence, be happy on your own, and available for that person to enter your life. What can be done about it? Stay positive. Every dog has its’ day. You will have your share of luck. Some things in life are a mystery. Have faith that if the relationship is meant to be, it will work out when the timing is right for both people. In the meantime, get busy doing things for yourself like cooking, eating right, exercising, spending time with family and friends, and be on the look to receive all the positive experiences life has in store for you. Do not expect too much too soon: Sometimes both people are in a place to start a relationship, but after a sparkling start, the spark slowly fades away like a soap bubble. This can happen when a relationship accelerates too fast and has nowhere to go but down. The physical attraction that draws two people together is often so intense that the partners want to spend all their time together and when they’re apart, they’re texting constantly and obsessively thinking about each other. Although this can be fun and exciting, the risk is that the relationship doesn’t last, because it is not love; it is infatuation. What can be done about it? Carefully, pace a relationship’s progression. Adopt tortoise, not a hare approach. Speed thrills but kills the relationship. One always need time to understand others in full as people try to hide their weaknesses,
A gal and her pal can be just friends, but at one point or another, they may fall for each other- maybe temporarily, may be at the wrong time, may be at the right time, may be too late, or may be forever and start singing from the same page.
Being inexperienced, at the start of my young adulthood, I no longer believed in the idea of soul mates, or love at first sight. But while moving on the carousel of time, I was beginning to believe that a very few times-may be a few times- in your life, if you were lucky, you might meet someone who was exactly right for you. It is not because he/she was perfect, or because you were so, but because your combined flaws were paired in a way that allowed two separate beings to hinge together and successfully carry the Sky Train of life on the rails of normalcy. demerits or final intentions. Give the relationship more time. More time is the ultimate remedy. In a new relationship, if things are going great, maintaining of balance is very important. Don’t ignore important people or aspects of your life when you get into a new understanding. Also, continue to work on building the friendship within your new relationship. The most satisfying, long-lasting partnerships have a balance of passion and honesty of commitment. Kindly ensure that you and your partner have things in common, beyond the physical chemistry; and both love each other and it is not infatuation. Conclusion: People have things going on that you will never understand in full. A person who doesn’t prioritize you, is not worth your time and don’t get stuck on him/her and thereby suffer from indecision. Keep an open mind, work on yourself, and do not feel low. Continue to be social and wait for your time. Always believe in yourself that best is yet to come. Always remember, connections are made with the heart, not the tongue. If someone likes you and do not want anything from you except the honesty of commitment and purity of relationship that is the moment to lock the relationship. As per my chequered experience, it seems to me that the best relationships the ones that last forever - are frequently the ones that are firmly rooted- like a banyan tree- in a reciprocal, respectful and perennial bonding. Such type of relationship need time to develop with the stipulation that both sides are fair and honest and using, not misusing the platform of dating. If both of you, carefully plan, and execute your moves on the chessboard of time wherein King and Queen always protect each other to be safe and comfortable then both will be joint winners, and live life queen size. Always remember. “We do not make Love, Love makes us.”

Cycling Can Reduce Your Loneliness, Boost Mental Health
F
eeling lonely? Riding your bicycles may not only improve your general and mental health, but also increase social interaction, says a study. The study showed that cycling is the healthiest mode of transport and is associated with better self-perceived general health, better mental health, greater vitality, lower self-perceived stress and fewer feelings of loneliness. “The findings suggest that active transport --especially cycling-- should be encouraged in order to improve health and increase social interaction,” said lead author Avila Palencia from the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) in Barcelona, Spain. The second most beneficial transport mode, walking, was associated with good self-perceived general health, greater vitality, and more contact with friends and/or family. “Ours is the first study to associate the use of multiple urban transport modes with health effects such as mental health and social contact. It also allowed us to highlight the positive effect of walking, which in previous studies was not very conclusive,” she added. The study, published in the journal

3 Things Strong Couples Do For One Another
Environment International, was carried out in seven European cities: Antwerp, Barcelona, London, Orebro, Rome, Vienna and Zurich and included more than 8,800 people. The transport modes assessed in the study were car, motorbike, public transport, bicycle, electric bicycle and walking. Driving and public-transport use were associated with poor self-perceived general health, while cars were linked with fewer feelings of loneliness. “This result is most likely due to the fact that the study population drove very infrequently and most journeys by car were probably for social purposes, such as visiting a family member or a friend,” the researchers explained. The study stressed on the need for “an integrated approach to urban planning, transport planning and public health is needed in order to develop policies that promote active transport, such as adding more segregated cycle lanes for a better environment for cyclists,” the researchers noted. n a happy and successful relationship, your partner is your lover, your best friend and everything else in between. There’s little in life that you can’t or won’t share with them. But no matter how successful your relationship might be, every couple hits a point where everything you do for one another just sort of becomes a given. This point is soon followed by taking everything, including the relationship you share, for granted. No matter how long you might have been together, that’s not a good point to hit, ever. The little things you do for one another might change over time, but in order to keep your relationship a loving and happy one, don’t stop doing them, altogether. Here are a few things partners always ought to do for one another. 1. Compliment each other Yes, something as small as this affects your relationship. Hearing positive feedback and getting validation from someone you love never gets old. You might forget how it feels (because you haven’t heard something nice in a while) or stop feeling the need to tell your partner how great you think they look, or how much you appreciate their support, etc - but these are the things that keep the romance and excitement alive in a relationship. Both of which, believe us, are important. 2. Be honest with each other Even when you think, the truth might be harsh. This applies for the smallest of things. If you think something your partner is wearing is not entirely flattering, tell them. If you think they could be better at work, tell them and be there for them when they put in the extra hours. No matter what the situation, give them your honest opinion. Even if it not well received and leads to a temporary fight, you know you would have done the right thing; and your partner will come to appreciate it. 3. Forgive each other No one is perfect and we all have annoying habits that are hard to get rid of. Not saying one shouldn’t try and improve an obviously bad habit, but nagging your partner about something that might take time to change can actually do more harm than good. Point out what you don’t like, tell your partner you’d appreciate them being mindful of doing that particular thing, and then move on. It’s hard, but unless it’s a serious issue in your life, forgive them. You can deal with a wet towel on the bed, until you can’t. Courtesy: SWIRLSTER

How to Prepare for Your First Job
Interview
Going for your first job interview is like a right of passage -- Like the first day to school or college. It is understandable to be nervous about the whole ordeal. But the more prepared you are, the more confident you will feel during your interview.
Ritika Tiwari Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist
T
o help you ace your first job interview, we have put together some helpful tips:
1- Get to know the company and the job role Before you start preparing for the interview, it’s important to do your homework to get a complete understanding of the company, its culture, and the job you are interviewing for. Start by researching about the company, its reputation online, and the key stakeholders. You should also get a clear understanding of the products and services that the company offers and its key target audience. After getting the scoop on the company, you need to research about the job itself -- The responsibilities, tasks, and duties that it entails. The experience and skills required by the ideal candidate should be your main focus.
The more information you have, the more prepared you will be to answer questions and impress the interviewers. 2- Look the part For your first job interview, you need to look the part and show the interviewers that you truly fit into their company. It isn’t the time to experiment with a new look. You need to look professional, sharp, and smart. Pick out formals with subtle colours and avoid dressing too casual. Also, you shouldn’t wear any loud colours or clashing patterns to ensure
your clothes aren’t a distraction. Check for any stains or wrinkles before you go for the interview and keep accessories to the bare minimum. Personal grooming is just as necessary -- Get a sharp haircut and trim your nails. Even if the company you are interviewing for has a casual dress code, its still best to wear semi-casuals like khakis and collared shirts. 3- First impressions go a long way Imagine the poor impression made when a job candidate
arrives late to an interview. To avoid this disaster, make sure you know exactly where the interview will take place. Also, you should have a good understanding of where to park. In general, show up about 15 minutes early for the interview. And if you can, do a practice run to the site of the interview so that you can get your timing down. When you go inside for the interview, speak clearly with confidence when you introduce yourself. Don’t forget to check your posture and make eye contact with the interviewer. At the end of the interview, shake the interviewer’s hand and thank them for giving you their valuable time. Let them know that they can contact you in case they have any additional questions. 4- Avoid weaknesses that are actually strengths Don’t be that person who lists their strengths as their weakness, like ‘I work too hard.’ The interviewers will see right through you. Instead, pick out a real weakness that you can easily address. It’s also advisable to modify your answer according to the job role you are interviewing for. Though, avoid being brutally honest and mentioning any major weaknesses like -- ‘I am often late to work.’

7 health mistakes young women are making
W
The more you get into this diet fad, the more you’re messing with your metabolism. There is no way to lose weight fast and the only way you can do it is by sustainable efforts. So, when you’re setting goals, avoid thinking of summer body, friend’s wedding or that trip. Instead, focus on eating healthy and exercising every day.
hether you’re in your 20s, 30s or 40s, your life changes with every phase in life. And to keep up with these changes, you need to stay fit and healthy. However, many of us make the mistake of prioritising everything – be it kids, family, careers – over our health. And this only means that we’re damaging our health without even realising.
Not preparing food Try to get some meal prep done over the weekend so that you spend minimal amount of time in the kitchen. It is important to eat healthy, home cooked meals to stay fit.
If you find yourself making these 8 health mistakes, it’s time to correct them. Too busy to exercise Being healthy and being comfortable in your skin is important. Exercise is an important way of introducing fitness in your lifestyle. Even a 10 minute exercise routine is better than nothing at all. So, go for a quick walk, run, cycle, join a gym, Zumba, yoga – find an activity that you love and you will make sure that you find some time for it. Unaware of your metabolism It is important to know your metabolic rate, gather information on how many calories you should be consuming. Also, there’s a misconception that metabolism decreases as you age. Well, that’s not true. The decrease is minimal with age
Not drinking enough water Hydration is the most important aspect of good health. Try to get at least 3-4 litres of water in your system in 24 hours. Water also helps burn fat. Also, it helps you stay full and avoid cravings.
women tend to become more sedentary. Sitting all day With busy work schedules, it becomes difficult to find activities through the day. Most of us work in sedentary jobs that
require us to sit all day. This decreases metabolic rate, which leads to weight gain. Get up every few hours and go for a quick 5 minute walk.
Not listening to your body Sometimes skipping a workout is ok. Sometimes having a cheat meal is ok. That’s how we’re designed. We can’t be feeling the same way about health every day. It’s ok to give yourself a break, but do remember to get back to routine. Courtesy: HT

Avoid disclosing these 5 things in a new relationship being jealous of that picture on social media with your male colleague, or turn to caustic remarks about such details in the middle of a serious fight. It’s better to keep your stuff to yourself, and leave his stuff to him. Your problems with your family Don’t give in to the temptation to vent about your parents, and other family members to a new SO. While it may prove relaxing to let off some steam with a person who matters to you, think about the fact that you have known your family for a lot longer than him. Before you start pouring your heart out, take a step back and analyse whether it would be appropriate. This information could be used against you at any moment. Take your time to get to know the person and then perhaps open up. That you like someone else’s mannerisms better It’s too early to say anything about mannerisms, and comparisons are a complete no. Drop hints he can pick up on, and perhaps when you are comfortable having an awkward conversation, tell him about your peeves. Comparing to another man will only make him insecure about something inconsequential.
Y
es, trust and honesty are the building blocks of any relationship, but you need to be careful while treading ground with someone you have just met. You are enjoying dating him and perhaps even think it might turn into something concrete in the long term, but understand that often it is not possible to be completely transparent in such situations. We’re not talking of blatantly lying or breach of trust, but

only of showing a little restraint in what you reveal during the initial stages. Details of your past relationships It is a no brainer that you will have to exercise caution in this department. You don’t have to hide from him that you have been in relationships in the past, just spare him the details. No human being likes to be in a conversation which talks of his ‘virtual competition’ even if it is in the past. It might lead to

overthinking of a lot of things, while you may have just casually mentioned what you did in the passing. Your passwords It is surprising how people end up sharing such details with their partners. It may sound like a matter of trusting him or the wonderful feeling of “We don’t hide anything from each other”, but remember that you will offer him access to all kinds of information. He might just end up

Your finances While you may have reached the level of physical intimacy with a new person, take your time to reach a similar level in talking finance. And yes, we mean salary, benefits, investments, the works. Don’t rush into letting him in on your bank balance and FDs. It may seem like you are being a little too cautious, but oversharing on this bit early on is known to have led to many

any of us love the sweet and succulent flesh of ripe papaya. The raw green version of it is usually cooked to prepare a variety of dishes. But what do you people do with the seeds of the fruit? If you are already wondering to see the title of this article (this is true for most of us, of course), you definitely throw them away. Well, do you know that these so-called non-edible seeds can offer multiple health benefits to us, if incorporated in daily diet in small amount? Let us take a look at them through this article. Here we go:

breast cancer, blood cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer and prostate cancer. High in Antioxidants According to a report published on the famous synthetic organic and natural product chemistry journal called ‘Molecules’, fresh seeds of raw papaya fruits work as a great source of antioxidants. They are basically loaded with flavonoid compounds and phenolic acid compounds, which protect our body from free radical damages with their strong antioxidative properties. Good Antibacterial Agent The antibacterial qualities of papaya seeds are quite impressive and they can be used for treating food poisoning. The extract prepared from only a little amount of these seeds can work directly on bad bacteria, such as Escherichia Coli, Staphylococcus, and Salmonella, etc. present in our digestive system. As a result, we can stay away from acute bacterial infections.
Improves Digestive Health Like the flesh of papaya, the seeds of the fruit also contain huge amount of digestive enzymes, especially papain. Being extremely potent, they can facilitate the activities of ‘good bacteria’ and enhance the functionalities of our gastrointestinal organs. Consequently, we get rid of various digestive issues.

he history of Halloween:
Halloween began as the festival of Samhain. It was part of the ancient Celtic religion in Britain and other parts of Europe. Samhain is a festival of the Dead. ... Originating in ancient Europe as a Celtic Fire festival, Samhain is now celebrated worldwide. ON October 31st, merrymakers will be able to enjoy all the hair-raising festivities that Halloween brings to the world every year. With the passing of time, the spooky event presently consists of fun activities and events, including trick or treating, watching frightening films and carving pumpkins…..
passed through centuries, Stingy Jack sells his soul to the Devil. After tricking Satan, Jack manages to keep a hold of his soul, but when he dies God doesn’t let him into heaven. Revelers believed that Jack’s spirit is trapped between heaven and hell, so they started carving the faces to frighten him away and not damage them. The pumpkin tradition was inspired by Irish folklore. Another ritual that has become associated with Halloween is pumpkin carving. According to Irish legend, scary faces had to be carved into a variety of vegetables to scare of “Stingy Jack”.
Where did Halloween come from? Historians believe that Halloween was first celebrated in Ireland. It’s a common misconception that Halloween originated in North America, though the tradition actually started elsewhere.. Experts believe that the spooky festival started in Ireland, where the Celtics celebrated Samhain. This Gaelic festival was held after harvest and honored the souls of the dead to prevent bad luck. Other theories suggest that Pagans have been celebrating Halloween for thousands of years, where people dressed up in costumes and built bonfires to scare evil spirits away. Remarkably, evidence of these early Halloween events can be traced back to over 6,000 years ago.
North America picks up the pace: It’s in America that Halloween has really taken off. Irish immigrants to the United States raised the popularity of Halloween during the 19th century. Down the lane of time, during the 20th century it became more and more popular, with traditions like pumpkin carving and trick and treating becoming part of TV shows, books and movies. Presently, people of canada,America and europe in particular, celebrate by lighting bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trickor-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating sweet treats.
Why do we go trick or treating?

Halloween Parties:
Halloween is celebrated in Canada on or around October 31. It is a day to mark the single festive night in the year when, according to old Celtic beliefs, spirits and the dead can cross over into the world of the living. Halloween 2018 occurs in Canada on Wednesday, October 31st. Trick or treating has been a tradition for centuries. It’s thought that this door knocking tradition began when Irish migrants travelled to America to escape the famine of the 1800s. As a part of the Samhain festival, Irish revelers would go from door-to-door to participate in souling. Soul’s would visit the homes of their neighbors to collect food and gifts on the promise that they would pray for the dead on All Soul’s Day. It is interesting to note that people would go guising, where they could earn a ‘treat’ by performing for the house-dweller. Appropriating from Irish and English traditions, North Americans began to dress up in costumes and go house to house

asking for food or money, a practice that eventually became today’s “trick-or-treat” tradition. Young women believed that on Halloween they could divine the name or appearance of their future husband by doing tricks with yarn, apple parings or mirrors.
Why do we carve pumpkins? The pumpkin tradition was inspired by Irish folklore. Another ritual that has become associated with Halloween is pumpkin carving. According to Irish legend, scary faces had to be carved into a variety of vegetables to scare of “Stingy Jack.; the metaphor for spirits. In the haunting tale which has been

By the 1920s and 1930s, Halloween had become a secular, but communitycentered festival, with parades and town-wide Halloween parties as the featured entertainment. The tradition of dressing in costume for Halloween has both European and Celtic roots. Hundreds of years ago, winter was an uncertain and frightening time. Food supplies often ran low and, for the many people afraid of the dark, the short days of winter were full of constant worry. On Halloween, when it was believed that ghosts came back to the earthly world, people thought that they would encounter ghosts if they left their homes. To avoid being recognized by these ghosts, people would wear masks when they left their homes after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits. On Halloween, to keep ghosts away from their houses, people would place bowls of food outside their homes to appease the ghosts and prevent them from attempting to enter. This is the centuries old tradition which has become an annual feature. It is indeed.

A Girl in a Whirl Contd. from previous issue (Part 25) I first had some breakfast. I began waiting for the counselor. 28. Training to be selfdependent Around 12:30 P.M., Jasmine, a Punjabi counselor, came. She listened to my whole story. She told me about my rights in Canada. She also informed me that Canada government would provide me with legal and financial help. She said she would help me understand the Canadian systems to begin with. Then she asked me to bring my passport and landing papers. When she learned that I had applied for my PR card, SIN card and Care cards just a day before that day, she first changed my address for all my documents on my behalf. Then she took me to ICBC where she had me make my photo ID. Then she took me to another government office where she got me registered for a three-hour class for joborientation. I was to attend the class after two days. Then she took me to a bank where she helped me open my bank account. I immediately got my bank debit card. After that she took me to a family doctor for my registration. Jasmine asked me whether I wanted to have lunch in a Punjabi restaurant or somewhere else. I

preferred Punjabi lunch. I ate my full meal almost after six weeks. I had learned a lot that day. I told Jasmine that I wanted to talk to my parents in Ludhiana, India. Jasmine replied that the policewoman would come in the evening and help me in that regard. She dropped me at my house around 5:30 P.M. and left. I went into my room and suddenly I remembered that I was to read Sukhmani Sahib. It was just over forty days “I read Sukhmani Sahib every day and I got free from Sam’s prison. Was that the result of my meditation or mere a coincident?”, I wondered. I took a shower and started reading that. Somebody knocked at my door in about half an hour. I opened the door and saw the same policewoman standing at my door. “How are you doing, Sonia?” “Good!” “Your husband and mother-inlaw have been released on bail of $10,000 for each. But you don’t need to worry about anything. They cannot come closer to you at all. Many cases have been started against them. You will get a lawyer for free. Sam would deposit money in your bank every month. The Canada Government will take medical care of you and your child for free. Your counselor will teach you how to use public transit. a bus and a train. One thousand dollars have been deposited in your account and she will help you buy a cell phone from your money.”, she said I was astonished to find that how god came to save me. Sam and his mom had almost killed me. I was contemplating over the miracle. The policewoman then called my mom from her cell phone. I told my mom all the developments of the day. The policewoman wanted to leave. I disconnected the phone and returned it to her very gratefully. After she left, I completed reading Sukhmani Sahib. To thank god very gratefully, I read ardas with great devotion. I prepared food for myself and had it. I went to bed eagerly waiting for the next day. The next day, my counselor took me to the bank. There were already one thousand dollars in my account. Jasmine arranged a secured visa bankcard for $500 for me. I had got my debit card the previous day. A bank employee taught me how to use my both cards. She also taught me how to do online banking. Jasmine gave me a bus schedule and taught me how to read it. Then she bought me a good cell phone deal. She also helped my get a good deal on my credit card for calling India. She gave me a booklet of city map and taught me how to do my route planning. re you constantly feeling tired and run-down? Do you get a tingling feeling in your hands and feet? Do you find yourself constantly thirsty and thus always going to the bathroom? Does your weight seem to go up and down rapidly? If you get a cut, does it take a long time to heal? Even worse, do you get chronic infections? Well, these are just some of the symptoms of blood sugar problems. A lot of people suffer from fatigue all the time and don’t even know that they may have a blood sugar problem. You may be one of them! We may suffer from insulin resistance or a blood sugar regulation problem even before the blood test confirms diabetes. It takes a long time to see the blood sugar affecting your blood test result. This is the last stage and it’s too late for prevention. Today, some 11 million Canadians (nearly 1 in 4) live with diabetes or pre-

diabetes. If you are tired all the time and can’t focus on your work, you may well have the initial stage of difficulties regulating your blood sugar level. We don’t want your blood sugar regulation issues to turn into a problem that becomes a diabetic condition that needs medication. The compounding issues between chronic fatigue and blood sugar issues are massively distressing and lifechanging. Well, here are some helpful tips. Solutions are fortunately plentiful and very affordable. You can eliminate the early stage of Type 2 diabetes without medications by following simple

five steps that include: Exercise is the best remedy. Do combined exercises for your cardiovascular system and to build your muscles. Optimize your diet: eliminate grains and sugars, especially fructose. Learn to read labels. Eat your vegetables first before eating carbohydrates or proteins. Your veggies must be at least 50% of your meal. Carbohydrates are best at 20-25% of your meal. Of course, avoid simple carbs like refined wheat, rice, or naturally high carbs like potatoes. Monitor your fasting insulin level (If you already have a blood glucose meter).

Optimize your Vitamin D. Probiotics:Probiotics help to strengthen a “leaky gut” - that is, an intestinal leakage that allows pathogens into the bloodstream where they should not be. This invasion causes inflammation, and a host of conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, food allergies, chronic fatigue, hepatitis, and even diabetes. Dr. Mario Kratz, a Research Assistant Professor at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre, has found evidence of the link between inflammation and insulin resistance. So with all of these symptoms, things become complicated. That is where the Health Monitoring Centre helps to sort things out. How do we do this? With proven scientific data accumulation with five different scanners that check your bodies multiple systems at the cellular level – it’s called a Bio-scan. Chicken Manchurian
INGREDIENTS: 4250 gm chicken 41 tablespoon all purpose flour 41/4 cup refined oil 41/4 teaspoon crushed green peppercorns 41/4 teaspoon chopped green chilli 4120 ml chicken stock 41/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 430 ml water 41 tablespoon corn flour 41 beaten egg 41/4 teaspoon crushed ginger 41/4 teaspoon crushed garlic 41 handful chopped into cubes cilantro 410 ml light soya sauce 41/4 teaspoon sugar 1 finely chopped spring onions METHOD: Step 1 To prepare this delicious Chicken Manchurian recipe, take a bowl and add corn flour, flour, salt and pepper along with the beaten egg in it. Mix all these ingredients properly and prepare a batter. Next, dip the chicken pieces in the batter one by one. Make sure it is properly coated. Step 2 Meanwhile, heat oil in a pan over medium flame. Once the oil is sufficiently hot, place the coated chicken pieces in the oil and deep fry till they turns golden brown in colour. Once done, drain the excess oil and keep aside till further use. Step 3 Now, to prepare the manchurian sauce, heat oil in another pan over medium flame. Once the oil is hot enough, add the garlic and ginger in it. Fry till it becomes slightly brown in colour. Now add in green chilies and cilantro leaves. Saute these for about a minute or so. Step 4 Then, bring the flame to low and add in the chicken stock, soya sauce, salt, sugar and pepper. Allow this mixture to simmer and cook for 5 minutes. Once done, add in corn flour along with water in it and bring the mixture to a boil. Step 5 The last step is to place the fried chicken pieces into the manchurian sauce. Bring the flame to medium low and allow the dish to cook for close to 5 minutes. Once done, turn off the flame and transfer the Chicken Manchurian into a serving bowl. Garnish with chopped spring onions and serve hot with fried rice or noodles.

How Social Media is impacting our daily lives and....
Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Health Coach of University of Victoria

ikipedia, the social media go-to- reference created by the public at large, in the form of thousands of contributors, defines Social media as “media for social interaction, using highly accessible and scalable communication techniques. So, Social Media is the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into an interactive dialogue. Social media is ever evolving. It has its’ own uses or misuses. Though its uses continue to change and expand. We clearly understand that social media relates to the technology and platforms that enable the web’s to content creation, collaboration and exchange by participants and the public. Social media defined: Social media is developed to promote social interaction, by using easily accessible and scalable communication techniques. Social media is the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into an interactive dialogue. Social media consists of various userdriven channels i.e. • Facebook • Twitter • Instagram • Snap Chat • YouTube • various blogs Social Media offers ever growing platforms that enable the interactive communication, by engaging users to participate in, comment on and create content as means of communication. Social media has the following character-
Social media is neither good nor bad or ugly. It depends on the user[s] when, why and how much one wants to give time for it. People from every walk of life are hooked to Social Media to the extent that it has relegated to the upper rung of addiction. Though we need Social Media from every angle – for the unparallel benefits it is bestowed upon- yet MODERATION IS THE KEY.

istics: Under the umbrella of Social Media, a wide variety of content formats including text, video, photographs, audio, PDF and PowerPoint are created. It creates social content with the community, in the community and for the community. The benefits it brings are: • Facilitates enhanced speed and breadth of information dissemination. • Provides for one-to-one, one-to-many and many-to-many communications. • Enables communication to take place in real time over time. • Facilitate interactions between various platforms through social sharing, email and feeds. • Involves different levels of engagement by participants who can create, comment or hang around on social media networks. • Extends engagement by creating realtime online events, extending online interactions offline, or augmenting live events online. Hallmarks of social media: There are three hallmarks of social media: Evolution, Revolution and Contribution. First, it is an evolution of how we all communicate, replacing emails in many cases. It’s indeed a revolution that for the first time in history we have access to free, instantaneous, universal communication. Third, social media is distinguished by the ability of everybody to share and contribute as a writer /contributor. Presently, we can deduce that social media relates to the technology and platforms that enable the interactive web’s content creation, collaboration and exchange by participants and the public which is a beneficial one. Connection and Communication made easy: A decade back, it was very difficult to find and then connect with friends, relatives and others. The social media sites, such as Facebook, What’s Up, Facetime, U Tube and Google et al, are making it much easier for people to find one another and reconnect, even after decades of being apart. Plus, these sites are a great way to see what is happening in the lives of such friends and family, and to meet and dovetail new people who have similar interests and thoughts as yours. Social media caters to every segment of society: Tweens, teens, young and old adults-being always ready to adapt and learn to use new technologies-- are certainly at the forefront of social media of all types. They have more technological know-how than many of older generations as well. Social media, therefore, is certainly having
a rather large impact on their activities of daily lives (ADL) for good or otherwise. There are those who spend too much time on social sites, or who exchange the abuses of online bullying on the sites could have some issues. For parents, even those of teenagers who are 16 and 17, it is important to watch to make sure that social media sites do not take over the intra-day and inter-day living of their children. When used appropriately, it can produce desirable results. Social Media a great form of Entertainment: One of the most compelling reason why people are spending so much time on social media sites is because they get a great form of entertainment and that too almost free. They watch videos that people post to their timelines, view pictures, read stories, and even play games. Whether using a smart phone, a tablet, or a PC -traditional computer- more and more people are utilizing social media in their daily lives. Few things have quite as much impact and affect as social media over the past few years. The sites are certainly a step toward world globalization. HOW HAS SOCIAL MEDIA CHANGED THE WORLD? Whether you’re a staunch user, you’re for it or against it, there is no denying the fact that social media and networking have impacted our lives over the last decade as follows: COMMUNICATION Social media and networking have
Google has been making schools more high-tech with its suite of cloudbased computing apps whereas parents notice a ‘malaise of scrolling - which - they think, is detrimental in excess form for their kids’ health.’ “It is not out of place to mention that, the sooner the kids, adolescents, or teenagers get used to this platform, the easier it will be to make it their lifelong habit – which suits these mega companies.
Social Media is a new marketing tool – for business community in particular- that allows them to get to know their customers and prospects in ways that were previously not possible. Social Media is not a fad, it is proving to be just the beginning of the marketing revolution. broken the barriers in communication, when it comes to communicating and we are spoilt for choice when it comes to ways of getting in contact with someone. Today, voice mail or a massage. Or even better, tweet, Facebook message, or touch base in other ways. We have the ability to see what others are doing, often within seconds of them doing it. AWARENESS The rise of social media and networking has made it faster and easier to access information around the Globe. Whether through a simple tweet, post on Instagram or a status update on Facebook, we can instantly be made aware of different issues around the world than we ever were before. SHARE YOUR OPINION: Social media has given everybody a platform, the opportunity to tell ‘their story’ online. Whether that is through Facebook, Instagram pictures, Tumblr blogs. Normal people now have the capacity to make their opinion known on a massive scale. Before social media was such a big element in our lives, you could have an opinion, or a view on something and only close-knit group of friends or family would know about it. Now social media makes it to reach other people, more people are using social media as an outlet to share their thoughts. Recent research reported by The Guardian UK, states that most young people are more than willing to hand over information. 91% of users share publicly accessible photos of themselves, 71% post where they live and share their location when updating posts, 61 % of users give their email address away and over a fifth share their mobile number. BUSINESSES Social networks enable businesses across the world to amplify their message in a way never thought possible only a decade or two ago. Businesses can now respond to customer queries and complaints in real time, with the ability to converse and engage with their customers on a different level which is continually improving as social media companies’ progress. This in turn is creating a better sense of customer service and brand loyalty among followers. Social media has proved to be an invaluable tool for businesses who want to grow and connect with their audience. Cont. in next edition

“I thought Hrithik would behave like a star” - Super 30 lead Mrunal Thakur
T
V hottie Mrunal Thakur is looking forward to big happenings in her career. Her horizons are widening with two mega projects ready for release. One is the indie film Love Sonia. The other is the Hrithik Roshan starrer Super 30, directed by Vikas Bahl. Talking about her transition from television to films, Mrunal said, “I believe in evolution. When you take up a job, you always have promotion on your mind. You want to reach at the level of the CEO. I too started like that. I started with TV, which was like a ladder. Mujhe bada banna hai. I want to be known for my acting. If I can play a chirpy girl, that is Bulbul in Kumkum Bhagya then people should also appreciate me as an actor, who can do intense roles. That’s why I did Love Sonia,” she says. “I want to be a
versatile actor. I treat every opportunity as a golden one. I’m an actor and I work in several mediums. Today what matters the most is content,” she maintains. Mrunal started her acting career with Khamoshiyan (2012) on Star
Plus. Then she did another show, Har Yug Mein Aayega Ek Arjun. After that Mrunal went into Marathi films and did acclaimed movies like Hello Nandan, Vitti Dandu and Surajya. She also participated in Nach Baliye 7. Mrunal
considers Love Sonia as her indie film debut. Director Tabrez Noorani was inspired to make Love Sonia after he was introduced to human trafficking in Los Angeles in 2003, when some girls were apparently found in a shipping container from China. Mrunal’s big Bollywood debut film will be Vikas Bahl’s Super 30. It’s a biopic on the life of renowned mathematician Anand Kumar. Superstar Hrithik Roshan is playing the mathematician in the film. Mrunal recalls her first meeting with Hrithik, “I thought he’d behave like a star but he’s so down-to-earth. We had a normal conversation. But when you see him on camera, you feel, ‘Wow! I’m working with the Greek god. Sometimes I was like, ‘Mrunal! Wake up, he’s Hrithik Roshan but you have to focus on your work’,” she smiles. Courtesy: FILMFARE

BUY WHEN EVERYONE IS SELLING…
Realtor and Mind Power Trainer
re you ready to put Warren Buffett’s investing advice into practice? Right now is a great time to buy real estate in Vancouver market. The reason being, home buyers have been less active in recent months and we’re beginning to see prices edge down for all housing types as a result. Buyers today have more listings to choose from and face less competition than we’ve seen in our market in recent years. This is a clear indication that in Vancouver real estate market we already have ‘Buyer’s Market’. As per August 2018 stats of Fraser Valley Real Estate board market activity declined further in August and sales dropped to the lowest level this year. Sales number have dropped to 1155 in comparison to 1879 sales in Augut 2017. As on Sep 27, 2018 number of sales in Sept month is 929 as compared to 860 in August 2018, but good
LIFESTYLE
news for buyers is that inventory of new listing is gone up to 2690 listings in comparison to 2072 listings in August 2018. This means now buyers can see an easing of competition with less number of multiple offer situation. This is so strange that in recent years buyers have been looking for ‘deals’ in the market, they were happy to compete in multiple of-
fers. But right now when market has shifted toward ‘buyer’s market’ where are all those buyers gone? This is the time to get real ‘deals’. Well it is understandable that buyers’ pool has shrunken a little bit after recent changes in mortgage rules, but it has been observed in recent weeks that a lot of qualified buyers are backing off from their offers.
Media has a big role to play in this kind of behavior of buyers. Some so called real estate experts scare people every morning in their talk-shows by giving their opinions about real estate market. I was driving with a realtor friend to a client, all of the sudden his phone rings and his client on the other side is asking my friend to turn on the radio channel and listen to real estate talk on it. Whoa! We were so surprised to see this influence media can create in the minds of people. It has been observed recently buyers agreeing on price and terms on one day and walking away from the deals next morning. So my advice to all buyers is to gear up and take action now, The best first step you could take is talk to a local realtor you trust, who can help you determine your best options and a plan to move forward with you home purchase.

Is there a Safe Level of Alcohol Use ?
LESS IS BETTER, NONE IS BEST
Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC
M
edical Science has been suggesting that occasionally use of beer or wine may be beneficial for heart as it opens up the Coronary Vessels but a New study in Lancet Journal suggest that there is no Safe level of Alcohol Consumption. Despite Several recent research showing that light-to-moderate drinking reduces heart disease, the new study found that alcohol use is more likely than not to do harm. The protective effect of alcohol was offset by the risks,” Dr Max Griswold the Lead Author of this Study told Media in summarizing the results, published in the medical journal The Lancet. “Overall, the health risks associated with alcohol rose in line with the amount consumed each day.” Compared to abstinence, imbibing one “standard drink” -- 10 grams of alcohol, equivalent to a small beer, glass of wine or shot of spirits -- per day over one year, ups the absolute risks of developing at least one of two dozen health problems by about 0.5 per cent, the researchers reported. That means 914 of every 100,000 15-95 year olds would develop a condition in one year if they did not drink, but 918 people in 100,000 who drank one alcoholic drink a day would develop an alcohol-related health problem in a year. In people who drank two drinks a day for one year, the risk of developing an alcohol-related illness increased to 7 per cent compared to those who opt for abstinence, so that 977 people in 100,000 who drank two alcoholic drinks a day would develop a health problem compared to 914 among the teetotallers. The risk of developing an alcohol-related health problems was 37 higher in people who drank five drinks every day for one year compared to those who did not drink at all. That works out to 1,252 people per 100,000. The “less is better, none is best” finding jibes with the World

Health Organization’s long-standing position, but is at odds with many national guidelines, especially in the developed world. The evidence shows what the evidence shows, like 2.4 billion other people on the planet that also consume alcohol -- need to take it seriously.” Overall, drinking was the seventh leading risk factor for premature death and disease in 2016, accounting for just over two per cent of deaths in women and nearly seven per cent in men. The top six killers are high blood pressure, smoking, low-birth weight and premature delivery, high blood sugar (diabetes), obesity and pollution.
But in the 15-49 age bracket, alcohol emerged as the most lethal factor, responsible for more than 12 per cent of deaths among men, the study found. The Main Cause of Alcohol Related Death was as Follows • Develop Tuberculosis • Accidents • Self Harm ( Suicide) The examination of impacts drew from more than 600 earlier studies, while a country-by-country tally of prevalence -- the percentage of men and women who drink, and how much they consume -- drew from another 700. Both were grounded in new methods that compensated for
the shortcomings of earlier efforts. Among men, drinking alcohol in 2016 was most widespread in Denmark (97 per cent), along with Norway, Argentina, Germany, and Poland (94 per cent). In Asia, South Korean men took the lead, with 91 per cent hitting the bottle at least once in a while. Among women, Danes also ranked first (95 per cent), followed by Norway (91 per cent), Germany and Argentina (90 per cent), and New Zealand (89 per cent). The biggest drinkers, however, were found elsewhere. Men in Romania who partake knocked back a top-scoring eight drinks a day on average, with Portugal, Luxembourg, Lithuania and Ukraine just behind at seven “units” per day. Ukrainian women who drink were in a league of their own, putting away more than four glasses or shots every 24 hours, followed by Andorra, Luxembourg, Belarus, Sweden, Denmark, Ireland and Britain, all averaging about three per day. The most abstemious nations were those with Muslim-majority populations. Again the Main Message from this Large Study Suggest LESS IS BETTER, NONE IS BEST

Are you tired most of the time? You know, I know, we are…… Part 3 think of a relaxing scene. • Avoid sleeping pills. Sleeping pills don’t work in the long term because they don’t address the causes of insomnia. Brisk exercising is though helpful. • Avoid watching TV in your bed room, particularly when sleep is not happening.
Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Health Coach of University of Victoria
Cont. from Prev. edition. When it comes to your energy levels, leaky gut is a problem because it can result in a nutrient malabsorption that hampers supply of essential vitamins and minerals. For example, B vitamins are crucial for energy production because they are responsible for turning the basic compounds found in the foods you eat — like glucose, amino acids and fatty acids — into useable “fuel” for the body. Iron and zinc levels (nutrients important for circulating oxygen throughout the body) may also become low due to leaky gut. Natural Remedies for Leaky Gut Syndrome: To effectively solve leaky gut syndrome, we need to adjust our diet and faulty lifestyle. Towards solution one need to remove foods that harm the gut like gluten and sugar [ man made poison]. Replace these with various healing foods such as fermented foods, bone broth[ watch for sodium]sprouted grains, seeds[ soak them in water for few hours before preparation] and nuts in moderation, lean sources of protein, vegetables and lots of healthy fats. Also consider taking gut-healing supplements like probiotics, L-glutamine, pancreatic enzymes and quercetin. Make sure to fix any nutrient deficiencies by including plenty of whole foods in your diet that supply magnesium, zinc, iron and B and C vitamins. Thyroid Disease: Women and older adults in particular need to be more vigilant to avoid this disease can cause a wide variety of symptoms including; weight gain or loss, moodiness, successive fatigue, muscle stiffness and joint pain, vision problems, changes in body temperature and changes in appetite. This butterfly shaped gland is responsible for regulating body temperature, heart rate, production of protein, maturing of Red Blood Cells and also helps control metabolic rate and energy levels. Thyroid Disease Causes: Due to hormonal imbalances Thyroid functioning is impaired. The main culprit is stress and highly processed and fibre negligent diet. Food intolerances to things like gluten and lactose, radiation exposure and nutritional deficiency in iodine or selenium also contribute to this disease. Natural Remedies for Thyroid Disease: Avoid grains with gluten and mostly dairy. Avoid toxins and heavy metals like BPA (Bisphenol A) found in plastic bottles and aluminum cans. drug and alcohol abuse, poor diet or an unfavorable work situation lead to this.
“Do not run after riches; run after good health, a decent life style and age gracefully on the carousel of time, so as to continuously vouch for self- actualization which is the ultimate goal of a human life.
Natural Remedies for Adrenal & Chronic Fatigue: In order to regain energy, we need to • Change our diet by limiting caffeine, • Avoid excess sugar and simple carbohydrates consumption • Avoid hydrogenated oils and processed and repackaged foods being loaded with trans fat in them lead to heart related diseases • Avoid unhealthy lifestyle choices, • Workplace problems and stress
checked and then include more food sources of both, or taking supplements if need be. Detox your body of heavy metals by using products like milk thistle, turmeric, chlorella and cilantro. Also consider having metal fillings removed from your teeth. Consume adaptogen herbs and superfoods like mace powder, ashwagandha and Tulsi. Adjust your diet to have complex carbohydrates. Try to include plenty of lean protein and healthy fat sources (especially foods like coconut oil, coconut milk/ cream, avocado, cage free, grass-fed red meat, wild coldwater fish, chia seeds, flaxseeds and hemp seeds).
How to Stop Feeling Tired most of the Time:
Adrenal Fatigue or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome As per latest data, Adrenal fatigue is believed to affect up to 80 percent of adults worldwide. Our adrenal glands are extremely important endocrine glands which release more than 50 different hormones, including the energy-regulating hormones cortisol and adrenaline. Chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms: Symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome and adrenal fatigue syndrome are similar and include: fatigue that doesn’t go away even after getting good sleep, muscle and joint pain, stiffness ,frequent headaches, frequently getting sick, such as having a sore throat, cold or flu-like symptoms, weight gain, digestive problems like successive constipation, mental fogginess and trouble concentrating and remembering things clearly. Adrenal Fatigue Causes: When you’re under a high amount of chronic stress due to emotional, physical and mental circumstances, your adrenals can suffer and fatigue can step in. Stressful events, environmental toxins and pollution, trauma and abuse, lack of sleep, over exercising,
Check with your Physician first, to make sure you have aforesaid medical problem[s]. Following are the basic suggestions: Dietary suggestions • Drink lots of water as a dehydrated body, cannot function at par. • Be careful with caffeine. 1 or 2 caffeinated drinks per day like coffee or tea can boost your energy and mental alertness, but more than 6 caffeinated drinks per day may make you anxious, irritable, and negatively affect your performance. • Eat breakfast without fail. Food boosts your metabolism and gives your body energy to burn. The brain relies primarily on glucose for fuel, so choose complex carbohydrates, lean protein and unsaturated fat loaded food. • Eat a healthy diet. Increase the amount of fruit, vegetables, whole grain foods, low fat dairy products and lean meats in your diet. Reduce or avoid the amount of high fat, high sugar and high salt foods in your diet. • Shun overeating: Large meals can drain your energy. Instead of eating 3 big meals per day, try eating 6 mini-meals to spread your calorie intake more evenly. This will result in more constant blood sugar and insulin levels. You’ll also find it easier to lose excess body fat. • Eat iron rich foods. Women and men alike, with women in particular are prone to irondeficiency (anemia). Make sure your diet includes iron rich foods such as lean red meat or add iron supplements e.g. Floravital liquid. 7 to 8 hours Sleep is necessary: A common cause of fatigue is, not enough sleep or poor-quality sleep. Suggestions include: • Get enough sleep. Adults need about 8 hours per night. • Relaxation helps: A common cause of insomnia is fretting while lying in bed Adopt relaxation techniques or example, you could
Lifestyle suggestions: • Do not work more than 12 hours a day: Workplace politics, challenging jobs, failing team work at work and consistent burnout are common causes of fatigue. Take steps to address your work problems. • Have more fun: Laughter is one of the best energy boosters around. Use laughter in uniform. Laughing yoga is indeed beneficial. Play with your family kids, peers, adults and elders. • Smoking is very dangerous, because carbon monoxide in cigarette smoke reduces the amount of oxygen available in the body. Our body needs to combine glucose with oxygen to make energy. This is the main reason why smokers typically have lower energy than non-smokers. • Limit your sitting for longer periods: Reduce sedentary behaviours such as watching television and using computers for more than 2 hours. • Boost physical activity. A sedentary lifestyle is known to cause fatigue. Being active has many healthy effects on the body and mind. It normalizes blood pressure, helps to maintain a healthy weight, and is an effective treatment for depression/ anxiety. A good bout of exercise also helps you sleep better at night. • Substance abuse is indeed life threatening: Seek treatment for substance abuse if you need it. Excessive alcohol consumption or recreational drug use contributes to fatigue. It’s also inherently dangerous. Bottomline: By implementing the aforesaid fatigue fighting strategies into your lifestyle will go long way to age gracefully. A fit, healthy and rested body is less prone to severe drowsiness in the afternoon. Do not eat simple carbohydrates and saturated fat during lunch time. Those who do so, I mean being carbophilic, experience a state of temporary coma which can be good for bad health. Eating a combination of lean protein and complex carbohydrates is the right choice. And do not forget to use adaptogen herbs as they can also be extremely useful for fighting with adrenal and chronic fatigue. Medical studies have shown that adaptogens help balance hormones and reduce the body’s stress response. These herbs can help improve cortisol levels, insulin sensitivity and result in better energy. So, try adaptogens like ashwagandha, holy basil and mace root, in addition to nutrients like omega-3 Krill Oil supplement, magnesium, vitamin B1, B3, B5, B6, B12, vitamin C, vitamin D3, iron and zinc. Continue to limit stress by exercising regularly in a healthy way, getting plenty of sleep, and practicing various relaxation techniques like reading, writing, meditating and any other activities that relax you. Always remember that in this case, a Doctor and the Patient is the same person i.e. you or me or others. What is necessary is basic daily active output, otherwise life puts you out!!!!!

5 eyebrow mistakes Hacks to keep your hair colour game strong you must avoid
A
good set of eyebrows can completely make your look. While some are blessed with the perfect pair of arches, others have to take time out to groom them. If you want eyebrows like Cara Delevingne, you better take care of your brows and steer clear of these common mistakes. Over plucking When you are picking stray hairs from your eyebrows, try not to go overboard and over-tweeze. Frequent plucking can thin out your brows. After one session of plucking, wait for the hair to grow back before you begin plucking again to get an even shape. Trying to make them identical Eyebrows are not perfectly symmetrical and making them identical will look quite unnatural. Do not try hard, rather stick to the natural shape of each brow for a more natural look. Also, trying to match them can cause over plucking.
All eyebrows have a natural arch and trying to change the shape might make them end up looking outlandish and unnatural. What you can do is trim the extra hair to maintain the shape but avoid changing the natural shape of the arch drastically.
Too harsh brows Eyebrow pencils are handy but overusing them is not a good idea. Using too much of brow pencil will make the eyebrows look like they’ve been painted. Sharp, angular lines are also a no-no. A few light strokes will suffice.
Too much gap Most of us do not want unibrows, but removing too much hair from the middle can result in a wide gap between the brows. To find the ideal edge of the eyebrow, hold a pencil vertically from your tear-duct to the brow; this is where your eyebrow should begin from.
Ignoring the natural arch

et’s face it, salon-perfect hair colour doesn’t last for as long as we’d want it to. A few weeks into the colour application and you start seeing signs of fading! That being said, you don’t have to simply wait for the inevitable to strike. Use these hacks to keep your hair colour to stay put for a little longer. Wait to shampoo Always wait for a full 72 hours after colouring your hair before you shampoo it. This allows your hair cuticle enough time to close, making your colour last longer. Thereafter, try to fit in as many days as possible between hair washes. That’s because shampooing not only gets grime off but also strips your hair of natural oils and dislodges colour molecules. If your hair tends to become greasy, use a dry shampoo at the roots. Shampoo right When you do wash your hair, use a sulphate-free shampoo or one that is meant for coloured hair. Go a step further and use filtered water to wash your tresses. This will limit the amount of chlorine and minerals reaching your hair and will keep the hair colour from fading. Most importantly, avoid hot showers as they open up the hair cuticle, releasing moisture and hair colour. Reverse wash While conditioning after shampooing is the norm, go for the reverse wash system to keep hair colour locked in. Condition your hair, rinse, shampoo, and rinse! This way, you reinforce the protective layer of

your hair, preventing colour molecules from washing out. Protect your hair Wear a hat or bandana every time you step out in the sun to prevent colour from fading. Prevent hair colour from seeping out when you hit the pool by simply rubbing coconut oil into your hair. Avoid heat when styling your hair as much as you can. If you need to apply heat, use lower temperature settings, and always use a heat protectant product first. Stretch mileage Opt for balayage or ombre as these hair colour styles work with natural hair growth patterns, meaning your hair will continue looking gorgeous even as it grows. A semi-permanent way to enhance existing hair colour is to glaze your hair. Glazing will add much-needed shine to your hair, making the hair colour look vibrant and as good as new. Cortsey: FEMINA

Tips for Starting Your Morning off Right
M
uch has been written about the power of your morning routine to set your day on a positive course, and science backs those assertions. Research by a German biologist found that people are most proactive and productive first thing in the day, and research published by the American Psychological Association concluded that people who are more active early in the day (early risers) are less stressed, depressed and anxious than night owls. A call for morning practices from entrepreneurs and businesspeople netted fascinating and creative rituals. These power players typically included practices that address five parts of your being—listed here. The key is to identify habits that resonate with you. Be playful and try different things until you find a groove that works. If the effects wear off or you get bored, switch it up with abandon. 1. Fitness “Within 10 minutes of waking up, I do 50 pushups. It clears my mind and instantly makes me feel like I’ve done something productive,” says Jason Parks, a digital marketing expert. Each morning Emily Skye, an Australian health and wellness influencer, goes for a barefoot beach walk with her boyfriend—leaving electronics at home. 2. Nutrition These practices include slamming down a liter of water, drinking the juice of a fresh lemon, or otherwise enjoying a planned, healthy and satisfying breakfast. 3. Spiritual Life coach Maria Salomao-Schmidt spends 20 minutes of chanting, yoga, meditating and journaling with her 13-year-old daughter. It is a practice that began when her daughter was going through a tough time and has resulted in household harmony. Others pray or read from sacred texts. 4. Emotional “Each morning for the past 10 years, I write two- to three-sentence love notes to my wife,” reports lawyer Craig Tractenberg. “Sometimes they are inventories of gratitude and thanks. Other times they are lovingly tawdry. I write them on a notepad and read the note to my wife when she is still in bed. Composing the note is meditative and often humorous.” 5. Mental and Intellectual “In my first hour of the day I do something I enjoy—either an hour of DJ-ing in the bedroom, listening to my favorite motivational podcast or watching some old cartoons,” says London music producer Gareth Bishop. Is Orthodontic Treatment Inevitable? Dr Vishal Sharma BSc, DDS, Cert. Ortho. FRCD(C), FCDS(BC)
C
onsidering 80% of North American teens are currently undergoing orthodontic treatment, braces and Invisalign Teen seem like a rite of passage. Every day, parents visiting our Abbotsford or Surrey orthodontic clinic ask, “Will my kid need braces?” or, “Are braces inevitable?” There are a variety of factors that determine the answer to those questions. To shed light on the subject, I’ll go over when braces are needed, the causes of malocclusion, or an improper bite, and if orthodontic treatment can be avoided with preventative measures. Will My Child Need Braces? Haven’t we all crossed paths with one those lucky people who have a fantastic smile without the help of orthodontics? Yet, they seem so few and far between. That’s because research indicates that 80% of kids and teens have some degree of malocclusion with crowding being the most common, followed by overjet, often referred to as an overbite. While anyone in this 80% could benefit in some way from braces or Invisalign, not all of them will be in jeopardy if they skip the teethstraightening process, particularly those with very mild cases. The majority of the time, treatment is recommended to improve oral hygiene, for cosmetic purposes and to ensure long-term oral health. All of these are important, valid reasons for undergoing treatment. Yet, it’s estimated that around 15% of patients have a serious, handicapping malocclusion, meaning it interferes with chewing, speaking or even causes pain. In these cases, it’s absolutely necessary for your child or yourself to seek out treatment and the earlier you do it, the better the outcome will be. To get back to the question at hand, statistically, it’s highly likely that your child will have a degree of malocclusion. Whether or not they wear braces, unless they fall into the 15% with serious orthodontic issues, will be a personal choice. However, when weighing the pros and cons, know that the benefits of straight teeth include being able to properly clean them to avoid expensive, painful dental work, having aligned jaws, which may ward off TMJ pain, headaches and changes to facial structure, preventing future bone loss, and more. Also, considering we’re a society that really values the appearance of people’s smiles, even patients whose crooked teeth are merely a cosmetic concern, particularly kids and teens who are vulnerable to teasing, will still want to consider braces or Invisalign. The power of self-confidence shouldn’t be underestimated! What Causes Crooked Teeth? A lot of orthodontic issues are caused by genetics. Crowding and spacing
54

often present themselves because of an imbalance in the tooth-to-jaw-size relationship. With crowding, teeth can be too large for a smaller arch and spacing is sometimes thanks to teeth that are too narrow for the jaw. Overjet and underbites are typically skeletal in nature and result from a discrepancy between the jaws. Crossbites, especially a back crossbite, are also subject to the genetic lottery. Even with two parents who never wore braces, the mixture of genes passed onto the child won’t necessarily result in perfectly straight teeth. The massive number of individuals who need orthodontic treatment these days even goes beyond traits inherited from family members. In fact, overjet is actually more common in certain ethnicities including Caucasians and South Asians. A study found that humans’ transition from hunting and gathering to farming may have led to a shortening of the jaw that left less room for teeth (remember, I said crowding was the most common orthodontic problem?). This is because with the advent of farming, easier to chew, processed foods became the staples of our diet and we no longer needed such robust jaws. While genetics play a huge role in the alignment of our teeth and jaws, certain habits and environmental factors can also create problems or worsen existing ones. Thumb sucking, extended pacifier and bottle use, nail biting and pen biting and losing baby teeth too early are tied to a range of diagnoses, including front crossbites, crowding and spacing.
How Can I Prevent Braces for My Child? Sorry, mom and dad, there’s nothing you can do to prevent orthodontic problems that are hereditary unless you have some scientific secrets I don’t know about yet. There are habits and environmental factors you do have a bit of control over though. Here are a few ways you can prevent certain orthodontic issues, or at least reduce their severity: • Schedule your child’s first visit to the orthodontist by age seven! I know, I know, you’re thinking this means your kid will be even more likely to wear braces. That’s actually not the case. Only about 10 to 15% of children can benefit from early intervention. The overwhelming majority will simply pop in occasionally over the next few years so the doctor can monitor the development of their teeth and jaws and let you know when, and if, it’s time for treatment. If action should be taken that could help your kiddo skip braces, like extracting baby teeth to make room for permanent teeth or using an appliance temporarily, they’ll let you know. • Visit the dentist regularly and ensure your little one practices proper hygiene. While a lot of people don’t worry too much about cavities in children and think the primary teeth are just going to fall out anyway, they serve an important purpose. They save a place for the permanent teeth so they’ll have room to come in properly. Losing baby teeth early can cause the adult teeth to
erupt incorrectly, resulting in a need for treatment. • Make sure your child wears a mouthguard for any contact sport or activity that has a risk of dental injury. Like I just mentioned, losing baby teeth too early can create issues and knocking out permanent teeth has the potential to be even more problematic. • Keep an eye on harmful habits like nail biting or pen chewing, both of which are associated with a front crossbite. While recommendations vary, the American Academy of Pediatrics takes the stance that children should stop drinking from a bottle by age two and sippy cups should only be used as a brief transition to regular cups. The majority of experts say parents should try to wean toddlers from their pacifier by age three. When it comes to finger or thumb sucking, which is a bit harder to put the kibosh on than pacifier use, I usually tell parents to try to break the habit when a child is four or five. I even have a recent post on the topic if you need some guidance. So, is orthodontic treatment worth it? For people with moderate or severe malocclusion, it definitely is. Even for those with more mild cases, the boost in confidence and improved oral hygiene are certainly valuable. Schedule a free consultation at Aura Orthodontics to have your child evaluated by calling us at (604) 593-5225.. I’ll examine their mouth, chat with you about your options and help you decide if they need treatment. If they do, I offer metal braces, clear braces, lingual braces, Invisalign and Invisalign Teen in Surrey and Abbotsford. My team and I have the expertise and technology to ensure treatment is as fast and comfortable as possible to give your child the healthy, beautiful smile they deserve.

How to use your fingers to apply makeup T
he magical world of makeup can be quite daunting, especially if there are a million wands involved. Like every painter requires a paintbrush, every makeup junkie requires a set of makeup brushes that help with application. There are a plethora of tools available in the market and these brushes go beyond the basic. After all, is there a difference between a foundation brush and blush brush? That’s when makeup rookies bring up the frequently asked question, ‘Can’t I just use my fingers instead?’. The answer to that is yes. Here’s how you can ditch those tools for your fingers, when applying the basics. P.S: Your fingers need to be sanitised before application, so make sure you clean them really well. Foundation Using your fingers to apply foundation across your face and neck allows you to get into the nooks and crannies of your face, making sure the product is applied evenly. Taking a small amount of liquid foundation, dot it across your face. Using the fingertips, gently tap the product into your skin – make sure your blend it evenly, just like you would when applying a moisturiser. Blending in smaller surface areas such as your nose and around the lips is a lot easier with your fingers. Blush Applying blush with your fingers allows for precise blush application. All you have to do is swatch some cream blush on the back of your hand and warm the product a little with your fingers. Dab the colour on your cheeks and blend it in really well. The warmth from your fingers makes blending easy, giving your cheeks a natural flushed glow. Shadow Using your ring finger, sweep some eyeshadow pigment over your lids and blend it in. An alternative would be to smudge your kohl pencil along your lash line for smoky effect. This gives a nice, grunge look to your eye makeup. Cortsey: FEMINA

If this describes you, there are still opportunities to make a career transition to pursue the job you’ve always wanted. To make a career change, you might have to obtain more education. Whether you enjoy learning or want a higher paying job, continuing education can be pursued at anytime during one’s working life. In fact, continuing education can open up previously closed doors or lead to better job opportunities. Continuing education usually refers to college courses or other vocational training obtained by older adults or working professionals. This has been corroborated by research, which finds that students in continuing education programs are usually older adults or working professionals.

Benefits of Continuing Education
Rising Numbers
According to the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics, demand for continuing education for adults aged 35 or older should grow by 7 percent until 2016. Economic conditions are one of the main reasons driving demand for continuing education, and many people enroll in continuing education programs during recessions. Likewise, during recessions, many workers seek to improve skills to remain hired or find new job opportunities. The following benefits can be derived from obtaining more education: Those with jobs who obtain graduate degrees improve promotion opportunities and can qualify for higher wages. It is often required to complete specialized training to quality for certain jobs, such as management or administration positions. Obtaining additional education can also increase one’s marketability in the job market. Continuing education is the way to develop new skills or knowledge necessary for a career transition. Continuing education is a great way to learn about subjects of personal interest. Courses taken do not necessarily have to be related to an individual’s job. Obtaining more education can improve one’s image in family or social circles. Obtaining additional education or completing a college program can enhance self-image and have positive effects on other aspects of a person’s life. Some people enroll in college because they love learning, while some do so to qualify for certain jobs. However, many people feel unable to re-enroll in college since they must keep their full-time jobs. Working professionals wanting to keep their jobs but obtain more education can enroll in online continuing education programs. People can return to school at any age. In fact, many older adults and working professionals are taking advantage of the opportunities provided by returning to college or earning additional degrees. Cortsey: www.educationcorner.com
