What is a fear of living? It’s being preeminently afraid of dying. It is not doing what you came here to do, out of timidity and spinelessness. The antidote is to take full responsibility for yourself - for the time you take up and the space you occupy. If you don’t know what you’re here to do, then just do some good.

“For Better experience, Best taste” A recent maiden visit to IHOP- Restaurant company franchisee (20 years in existence) on 82n dave and 120th street, Surrey(BC Canada)happens to be an interesting one. When I finally arrived, a hearty, hospitable reception by Mr Gary Kelbert Owner/Operator put me at ease. By Surinder Shaun Kochhar

F

irst of all, an ever smiling logo of this IHOP set me into a good mood with hunger hormone ghrelin gushing in my stomach. As I could not help smiling, what flashed into my mind was an image of laughing Buddha – which depicts plenitude of happiness and satisfaction. “The Everything You Love About Breakfast”,the hook line of the company gives a fair idea that they are specialist and cater to breakfast eating in particular. To my pleasant surprise they serve with pleasure a multicultural and wide variety of items which are a part of lunch and supper with their leading competitors as the place [s] are open up to late hours on seven days a week and around the year.

IHOP is an acronym which stands for International House of Pancake. True to its humble beginnings, 58 years back and counting, they started as pancake specialist and now they serve over 12 types of pancakes. More so, French toast with scores of bread types, omelettes, onion rings, waffles, crème crepes, salads, soups, sandwiches, burgers, fish, chicken burgers, beverages hot and cold, deserts, and other non- vegetarian items to quote a few. In fine, one can safely say, that it caters to every strata of society and age group, be it for kids, adults or 55 plus. The food quality with this, over a billion dollor company with charity in their heart, is par excellence. Change is the only constant factor in life. With restaurant industry new items keep on getting added in succession to tickle the taste buds. Further enquiries revealed that they are adding new items in beverages and meals in few weeks with festivities around the corner.

After eating, I came out full and satisfied due to the amazing experience, and the great tasting food. I hope to see you soon. Happy eating!!!!

Run for With #TEAMVOLKEN Oct. 24-25 / 2015

Addiction and drug culture has plagued our community for decades, and is still on the rise. This is Danial’s story, a shining example that recovery is possible and the tremendous courage it takes to change. My name is Danial, and I am a student at the John Volken Academy. I have battled with addiction for 6 years of my life. I grew up in Pakistan, and later moved to Canada. From the day I started school I was an over achiever. I got top marks in my class, and was playing sports like ping pong, soccer and basketball representing my school. I was very sociable and I got along with everyone. I hung out with the cool kids in my school and took pride in it. Life seemed great. At age 14, I faced some emotionally testing times as there were some major family conflicts. I ended up moving away from the place I grew up in, and had to suddenly adjust to these changes and the hurt that came from this conflict. The next summer, I was hanging out with my cousins and was introduced to heroin. I was 15 at the time. I was hooked from that moment on, and continued for 2 years until my family got me into my first rehab. In Pakistan, very little was known about proper recovery. I was loaded up with psychological drugs and endured beatings almost daily. Afterword, I got on a plane with my mom and moved to Calgary. The savage treatment did not work, and I was still an addict deep down. I looked forward to my next fix. I quickly found marijuana and within the year I was using cocaine. My step father kicked me out after 2 years of dealing with his drug addicted son. Soon after, I found heroin again. I quickly went downhill, associating with the wrong people and everything else that comes along with today’s drug culture.

My mom tried desperately to get help for me. I looked in the mirror and saw a 20 year old kid with bags beneath his eyes, long, messy hair, and bruises across his dirty, unshaved face. At that moment I had hit my rock bottom and I knew I had to change or die. I called my mom and told her I was going to detox and that I needed a serious change. A month later, I arrived at the John Volken Academy. I didn’t know what to think about it, all I knew was I needed to be here. As I got to know others in the program, I wanted what they had; a strong sense of discipline and the confidence to stay sober. They helped me understand the recovery process of NA and the AA 12 steps, and understood where I came from. I learned to keep my room clean, follow a balanced routine, and keep proper hygiene. I started wanting to be more physically fit and everything I needed was provided to me here. The “bubble” that this place put me under helped me deal with my underlying issues and to fix them rather than push them under with drugs. The people here quickly became my brothers and sisters and I started striving to be a better example for other recovering addicts who are newer to the program. I am the most hopeful I have ever been in my life. Thanks to the support system I have at the academy, the traditional 12 steps, and the new direction that I’ve found in my life, I am now over 9 months sober.

Surrey Youth Safety Council – YouthFest Booth, September 19th 2015 Who is the Surrey Youth Safety Council?

T

By: Jashaun Grewal

he Surrey Youth Safety Council (S.Y.S.C) is a youth-led, actionproject group, situated in the city of Surrey. We, S.Y.SC, endeavor to empower youth that feel unsafe regarding many aspects. Presently, in Surrey, the ambience and environment are not very youth friendly. Common public places, in which the population should feel most comfortable going to – especially the youth- are now the places where the majority of the community feels the most unsafe. The crime rates are soaring, and the youth have been exposed to many negative factors that they may be influenced by. S.Y.S.C. is driven and committed to changing this situation, as we believe that the greatest cause that may cause youth to make a negative decision, is a lack of information, and an outreach to external and internal resources of support. S.Y.S.C. targets many issues that can have adversary effects on today’s youth - such as, drugs, gangs, bullying, mental illnesses etc. We attempt to supply the youth with information and resources regarding these issues, as well as a base of support for those in need.

Purpose:

The youth are a foreshadowing of tomorrow. The decisions and choices that they make now, will widely influence not only their future, but also the future of the city as a whole. However, in order to make the correct and responsible decisions, they must be provided with a safe and healthy environment that they are able to grow, develop, and aspire in. Safety in Surrey has become a real growing and upcoming issue. It’s not acceptable for the public to be afraid of and feel unsecure about their home place. S.Y.S.C believes, that if anyone

can take a stand against these issues, it is the youth themselves. We, the youth, DO have the power to make a change for the better. Our city needs a change, and if youth in our community are all better informed and have an understanding of the sensitivity of rising issues in the city, the youth will make better, positive decisions. Furthermore, what’s more helpful then youth to youth engagement, where each person can relate to the other, and express themselves freely, without any limitations. S.Y.S.C believes that we are part of the solution, and it all starts from having the will to make a change, knowing that change is needed - everything else will slowly follow after.

What is YouthFest and why is SYSC here? YouthFest is one of Surrey’s largest youth events, and 2015 is the 11th year that this has been held. It is for youth, ages 13-18 to get involved in the community, participate in a variety of activities, enjoy a time of social bonding, and have a good, safe, time filled with music and fun! The Surrey Youth Safety

Council is at YouthFest as a youth resource table - wanting to showcase our organization and its purposes to a wide variety and number of youth individuals. It is for youth to learn more about the resources that they have access to, that can strongly assist them in making positive and beneficial decisions for themselves and others. We had fun games, giveaways, and great resources and information at our booth to engage the youth in our community.

Future Plans: S.Y.S.C envisions a future with a healthy community, which allows for safe expression, and encourages the growth and development of the youth. S.Y.S.C. is slowly taking steps to achieve this. At the

moment, SYSC plans to launch a mobile app for the public to easily download and use, which will be helpful in how to stay aware and give support to people in need. We are also planning to have our own fundraiser to promote safety awareness and crime reduction. Furthermore, SYSC is also planning their own event about safety in the community which is soon to come.

What Has Inspired Us to Take Action? I, Jashaun Grewal, am just another high school student in our community that sees that Surrey is in need for change. When given the opportunity, I immediately knew that it had to be taken advantage of, and thus, the Surrey Youth Safety Council was founded. I am proud to say that S.Y.S.C. is entirely youth led, by a group of young leaders who have the passion to and strive to make a difference. Over 25 youth around Surrey are working hard as S.Y.S.C. members, and we are making an impact. Slowly, in small numbers, the youth of Surrey are becoming more aware, more engaged. Making a difference in our growing community is what drives our members and me to expand S.Y.S.C. and make it more helpful to our youth. On September 1st, we launched our website (syscsurrey. com), and reached over 500 different people in just 2 weeks. When I see that people are engaged and are looking at how SYSC is making a difference, it empowers me to push our members and our organization to work harder, and really try to get out there in our city. I assure you that SYSC will keep pushing and keep growing! “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” - Socrates

How Bollywood celebrates Ganesh Chaturthi Ganesh Chaturthi is, inarguably, the most revered festival in Maharashtra, and is celebrated with grandeur. This festival is held in honour of Lord Ganesha, who is worshiped for 10 days. Like everyone living in the city, film stars, too, have fond memories of the festival. While some actors have been celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi since they moved to Mumbai, a few have grown up visiting various pandals across Mumbai. These Bollywood stars reveal what the festival means to them, as they also share their fondest memories associated with it.

Ayushmann Khurrana As a kid, I didn’t know much about Ganesh Chaturthi as it wasn’t really celebrated in Chandigarh (Punjab). But when I came to Mumbai, the festival became part of my life. Though we donlt bring the Ganpati idol home, as I donlt believe in rituals, I canlt imagine this city without the Ganpati fervour. People call him the friendly God. I call him the Bollywood God. From the Ganpati puja that is done at the beginning of every shoot to dancing on the latest Lord Ganesha tracks, I feel Ganpati really completes the cultural fabric of this city.

Shraddha Kapoor I have very fond memories of the festival since my childhood days. This is one occasion when my entire family comes together. I will be back in Mumbai for three days to celebrate the festival. We are all very excited to welcome our GanpatiBappa home. Shilpa Shetty Kundra My mom has always been obsessed with Ganpati idols. She is a collector. As kids, we would visit all the big pandals at night. It used to be very fascinating, and we actually looked forward to the festival. My parents would take us to at least five pandals. We looked forward to the outing, and eating the modaks.

Manish Paul It is a very special festival for my family. We have been bringing a Ganpati idol home since 2009, and we make sure it is an eco-friendly one. There is a very positive vibe during the festival, and on those two days, when we have him (the idol) at home, I donlt shoot. I like being around him. Kapil Sharma I was born and brought up in Amritsar, Punjab, where Ganesh Utsav wasn’t celebrated as such. But ever since I have shifted to Mumbai, this festival has mesmerised me, and I enjoy seeing the way people celebrate it. There is so much happiness that is spread across Mumbai during these days. It is truly a blessing to be in the city during this period.

OCTOBER 2015

news magazine

After films starring two heroes and Bollywood bromance, it’s now time for two heroine movies. With the female actors coming into their own and making films a success based on their acting prowess and star value, we welcome the new trend. Kajol and Kriti Sanon Actor Kajol makes her comeback in Rohit Shetty’s Dilwale, in which she will share the screen with actor Kriti Sanon. Kriti says that she loves that Kajol is fearless and natural, and adds that she has learnt a lot from her. The film also stars actor Shah Rukh Khan.

Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone Buzz is that actors Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra got along like a house on fire on the sets of their upcoming film, Bajirao Mastani. In fact, Priyanka ordered -special dance gear for Deepika from the US, as the two have a dance-off in the movie. The historical romance sees Priyanka playing Kashibai, the first wife of Baji Rao, while Deepika essays the role of Mastani, the second wife.

Kareena Kapoor Khan and Alia Bhatt Actor Alia Bhatt has always spoken about being a big fan of actor Kareena Kapoor Khan and is thrilled to work with her in Udta Punjab. Buzz is that Alia, even when not shooting, would just observe Kareena on the sets to learn from her. She even tweeted “Beautiful ¬person (sic),” about Kareena.

Completely okay playing non glamorous roles: Lara Dutta B

eing touted as one of the funniest films of the year, Singh is Bling starring Akshay Kumar and Ami Jackson is all set to hit the screens on October 2. Actress Lara Dutta, who is essaying a geeky character in “Singh is Bling”, says she does not have the pressure of playing a leading lady or being glamorous on screen anymore. After giving birth to a child in 2012, Lara took a break from acting. Now she is elated to be back with Akshay Kumar-Amy Jackson starrer film. “There is no pressure of playing the heroine or love interest of the hero. I can actually be the actress and have fun by playing great roles, forget about what your looking like, what your hairstyle and clothes are like,” Lara said. “One can look beyond all these things and focus on acting. It was a good time to be back,” she said. However, the 37-year-old actress has no issues staying away from glamorous roles. “I am completely ok with it (not playing glamorous roles) don’t have any problem with it. For me, its liberating to not have that constant pressure on you,” she said. Lara thinks heroines of Hindi films are stereotypical and

she wants to break away from that. “For the last 10 years or so I was doing the same thing...Doing glamorous films except one or two films ‘Billu Barber’ or ‘Chalo Delhi’. I think the Hindi film heroine is stereotypical. It is nice to have an opportunity to have that freedom to not to do that anymore,” she said. She insists that it does not mean that she hated being glamorous for many years. “I came from modelling industry so I am part of fashion industry. It is not that I hated being part of glamorous film. I like dressing up,” Lara said. “It is just that when you get chance to break away from that... Like in this film the role is different.” In the film the actress plays a geeky character called Emli. “Emli has no sense of style and I am not like her in real life, she is cracked, crazy, quirky and funny,” Lara said. The former beauty queen reveals it was her good actor friend Akshay, who offered the role to her. “Akshay called me saying he needs me and wants me to play a character in “Singh is Bling”. My daughter is three years old... So, I had the time this time as she goes to school,” Lara said. “I thought of putting the time for a film.. It is a fun entertaining film. It is a mad character,” she said. “Singh is Bling” directed by Prabhudheva is a film full of entertainment and masala and surely worth not missing!

Ranveer Singh: I will wait a lifetime for Deepika Padukone

A

ctor Ranveer Singh says he is willing to wait for his rumoured girlfriend Deepika Padukone for a lifetime. “She is so beautiful that I would wait all my life for her,” Ranveer said at a promotional event of Bajirao Mastani in Pune where Deepika was also present. When asked whether she too would be willing to wait for a lifetime for him, Deepika says, “What? You have to ask him in what context he said that. Wait at a restaurant... or...” The 30-year-old actor said it was just a joke before adding, “It was one of those random, smart, wisecracks which I cracked by saying ‘she is so beautiful that I will wait all my life for her’. You guys waited since morning for us. So if you ask me I would say she is so gorgeous that I would wait for her all my life.” To this, Deepika interrupted saying, “I don’t understand English at this point.” Deepika, who has earlier worked with Ranveer in Ram Leela and will next be seen with him in Bajirao Mastani, says that she has not seen any change in him as a person. “As a person I think he is the same... same energy and same enthusiasm, same protectiveness and same warmth. As a person he has not changed,” the 29-year-old actor said.

However, she feels that as an actor Ranveer has grown a lot. “As an actor he has grown tremendously after Band Baaja Baarat. Ram Leela was a defining point in his career. He can do a film like Band Baaja Baarat, Lootera, Ram Leela, Dil Dhadakane Do, he plays different kind of characters convincingly on screen,” she said .

Caution: 4 relationship killers that you should always stay away from

N

o matter how passionate a relationship is at the beginning, eventually there will come a time when the passion will fade and familiarity will creep in. That isn’t a bad thing though. When you’ve been together for a long time, you get used to each other. However, don’t take each other for granted. And definitely don’t allow certain things to erode your relationship... • One of the biggest things that can cause a wedge in your relationship is stress. Stress manifests itself in your life in different forms — it can cause damage to your health and affect your relationships with others. Recognise that you’re stressed and work on dealing with it. Different people deal differently with stress and what works for someone might not work for you. Whatever approach you select, make sure that it improves the bond between you and your partner. • Very often, when one partner has a more active social life, it could lead to friction between a couple. The aim here would be to strike a balance and ask yourself what is more important — your social life or your relationship. • Don’t leave arguments incomplete. Finish off a fight instead of keeping things inside you. It is better to get things off your chest instead of silently resenting things until it gets worse and takes a serious toll on your relationship. • Insecurity is another feeling that could drive a deep wedge in relationships. Sit your partner down and have a heart to heart discussion. Ask them what is bothering them and together try to work out a solution.

Facts you should know about the recently launched Apple Iphone 6s and 6s Plus Apple’s new iPhones are here. The tech giant unveiled the two updated iPhones -- iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus -- at an event in San Francisco’s mega Bill Graham Civic auditorium on September 9, 2015. Talking about the new smartphones, Apple CEO Tim Cook said, “They look familiar, but we have changed everything about these iPhones.” One of the key new features of the new iPhones is the new touch capability called 3D Touch which allows the screen to sense multiple types of pressure.

Here are important facts you need to know about Apple’s latest iPhones. 3D touch

Most smartphone users are accustomed to kmulti-touchl -- the ability for phones to recognize touches from multiple fingers, enabling such capabilities as pinching to zoom. With new iPhones, Apple brings in 3D Touch. 12MP rear camera

After being stuck with an 8MP camera sensor since iPhone 4S, the iPhone’s range has finally received a substantial megapixel upgrade. iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus sport a 12MP rear camera, with 50% more focus pixels to ensure faster autofocus. 5MP selfie camera

The selfie camera has also got an upgrade this year, jumping from 1.2MP in iPhone 6 and 6 Plus to 5MP in iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. Though it is not backed by a front-facing LED flash, Apple has used a technology called Retina Flash to deliver brighter selfies. This feature increases the brightness of the screen by three times, which Apple claims is comparable to that of its rear dual-LED flash.

A new colour

The new iPhone 6S Plus will also come in a rose gold colour, as well as the standard silver, gold, and space gray hues. More durable body

Though the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus look the same as their respective predecessors, they are made of stronger material. Apple has used aircraft-grade 7000 aluminiumalloy, which is less dense and lighter than standard metals used in smartphones, but is up to 60% stronger. Faster processor

The new iPhone 6S and 6S Plus pack the new 64-bit A9 chip with integrated M9 motion coprocessor under the hood, which processes apps 70% faster and graphics 90% faster according to Apple Faster fingerprint sensor

Apple says that the TouchID fingerprint sensor used in iPhone 6S and 6S Plus is twice as fast as the one used in previous iPhones and iPads.

Improved 4G and Wi-Fi performance

Apple has upgraded the wireless chips in iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus too, which can download/upload data twice as fast compared to last yearls models. The two iPhones now support up to 23 4G LTE bands.

What he can also do justice to, is a paperback on how to pull off a sequel with a wafer-thin script, by leaning on performances and silly dialogues. One of the memorable ones include, “Maine vote daala nahin, toh mukhyamantri mera kaise hua?” a character argues, when his wife asks him to accept the son she had from a previous relationship. It also has songs like, ‘Maa bunty hui, tu bubbly hua, bandh kamre mein 20-20 hua’, which could just be the awkward Ganesh Visarjan number of the year. Bhai is wasted as a deranged don whose signature line, ‘mazaak hai’ perhaps refers to Mr Bazmee’s approach to cinema. Raaj Shandilya’s dialogues can be summed up as cheap insults that work despite being ridiculously silly. Even something as simple as Majnu bhai referring to a portly bhai played by Neeraj Vora as kmooch wale bean bag is gold. From the sound track, Time Lagaye Kaiko rhymes Kaiko with Baiko in John Abraham’s voice. The item number 2020 has six rejects from Calendar Girls who cumulatively don’t manage the job of one. Like many other Bazmee films, this one is a great Sunday afternoon watch at home. You can snooze off at any point, only to catch up on it the following Sunday on the same entertainment channel. But if you’ve had an exhausting week and need some laughs, leave your rational self at home and head for this brain-buster at a theatre near you.

Christopher Nolan’s mystery 2017 project identified as Akira? T

he production history behind Warner Bros. Akira remakes has to be one of the most tumultuous ever. But fresh reports from Den of Geek suggest that not only is the movie getting yet another go-ahead from the studio, but none other than their favourite child Christopher Nolan is the one who’s going to be shepherding the project. Based on Katsuhiro Otomo’s classic manga and anime film of the same name, the American remake has been floundering around for the better part of two decades. Keanu Reeves was set to star initially but when director JaumeCollet-Serra (way too many Liam Neeson movies) came onboard he brought with him Garrett Hedlund

and Kristen Stewart. Last we heard Leonarndo DiCaprio’s Appian Way was producing the film with Sons of Anarchy screenwriter Marco J Ramirez also attached. Den of Geek also reports that not only is Warners going ahead with the film but are bullishly planning a trilogy. And with the latest reports suggesting that Collet-Serra has also moved on from the project that leaves the director’s chair momentarily unoccupied. This comes high on the heels of news that Warners had scheduled the new Christopher Nolan movie for a July 2017 release date. While they offered no further details, the date itself is bang in the middle of the summer movie season.

And since Nolan hasn’t made a ‘small’ movie in a really long time, all signs point to his next film also being big. What must be noted is that while Nolan directed three Batman films, he did put his own unique spin on them. He isn’t one to simply remake a movie. Or this may not be the case at all, because Den of Geek can’t verify in what capacity Nolan’s joined the project. He could simply be only producing the movie as he did with Man of Steel. Whatever may be the case, Akira fits right in Nolan’s wheelhouse: Hard sci-fi with noir undertones. And any form of Nolan involvement is something everyone should be very excited about.

This is what Jennifer Lawrence found when she googled herself The Hunger Games actor Jennifer Lawrence has revealed that she often Googles herself to know what people think about her. The 25-year-old actor admitted that she can’t keep herself from checking social media to know what people think about her. The Oscarwinner, who is writing a screenplay with pal Amy Schumer, jokingly said that once she even Googled ‘Jennifer Lawrence Ugly’. Lawrence was part of the huge celebrity iCloud hack that shook the entertainment world last year. Several of her nude images were leaked. Lawrence will next appear in David O Russell’s Joy around Christmas this year.

That’s bananas! Minions mints $1 billion globally

I

n a rare feat for any animated movie, Minions, a prequel/spin-off to Despicable Me franchise, has crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. The movie, from Illumination Entertainment and Universal, has grossed $321.9 million domestically and $682 million internationally to become the #3 animated film of all time and the top grossing of 2015 to date, said The Hollywood Reporter. This milestone also marks the first time any studio has had three films cross $1 billion at the worldwide box office in a

single year. Furious 7 has earned USD 1.51 billion for Universal, while Jurassic World has earned USD 1.628 billion to date. The only other animated titles that have crossed $1 billion are Disney’s Frozen ($1.274 billion) and Pixar’s Toy Story 3 ($1.06 billion). Pixar and Disney’s Inside Out, the summer’s other animated tentpole, has earned $701 million to date. It is ahead of Minions in the US with $343 million in earnings, and has yet to open in many international markets.

Do you have certain experiences from your childhood that are ingrained in your memory that you will never forget? Maybe the annual visit to a family member, the smell and taste of a food that was prepared in your house, or a funny moment that seemed to happen a lot.

T

hose memories and habits may have been created by activities that were done regularly in your household growing up. We’ve learned those activities have a powerful impact on how we function as individuals and family today. Once we realized this we decided to be intentional about our family activities to positively impact the relationships we have with our children and relationships they will have in the future. Below we compiled a list of 5 intentional family activities that a family should do or plan to do consistently. We believe if done consistently over time these activities will help to create better relationships and stronger bonds within your family, while preparing your children for future relationships.

Family Night (movie, game, etc.) Movie Night is one of our favorites. We select a family movie that we haven’t seen yet and enjoy watching it (in the dark) with popcorn, cookies, or fruit. Sometimes well pull out blankets and all lay right on the floor or couch.

important because it models a great relationship for the kids and sets the standard that mom is important to and loved by dad and vice-versa.

BIG celebrations for special days We think birthdays should be a BIG DEAL. They only happen once per year and on that day (and sometimes the entire week) we want to make the birthday person feel extra special. It hasn’t always been the case and I am still a work in progress, but I’m doing better.

2.

Dining at home This is a challenge for many families with work, school, extracurricular schedules, but I am proud to say we typically have family dinner, with all of us, at our dining room table almost every night of the week. It has been a practice for many years. We want to do the same with breakfast, but not all of us are morning people. We talk about

everything: school, sports, finances, goals, and food (of course). I can’t think of a better way to fellowship and bond than doing this on a consistent basis.

3.

One-on-one time nights, mom/daughter days, father/son days, as well as daddy/daughter and mommy/son “dates” are great things. I think Date Nights are most

Reading and learning There are so many benefits to reading and learning together it amazes me. We typically read a bed time story to our kids and this has helped to build strong reading, writing, and communication skills. We strive to be lifelong learners, not just taking classes or courses, but all the time for life. Studying new things with our kids shows it is okay if they don’t know something, but at the same gives them confidence that they are capable and skills to learn anything they desire.

ealth care in Canada is delivered through a publicly funded Health Care system, which is mostly free at the point of use and has most services provided by private entities. It is guided by the provisions of the Canadian Health Act of 1984, which came in to effect by Vision & Lobbying of Tommy Douglas. The government assures the quality of care through federal standards. The government does not participate in day-to-day care or collect any information about an individualls health, which remains confidential between a person and his or her physician. Canada’s provincially based Medicare systems are cost-effective partly because of their administrative simplicity. In each province, each doctor handles the insurance claim against the provincial insurer. There is no need for the person who accesses health care to be involved in billing and reclaim. Private health expenditure accounts for 30% of health care financing.

in Canada, makes a compelling case for expanding our universal public health care system to include the cost of prescription medicines. Not only would a national pharmacare program ensure that all Canadians have access to drugs they need, it would save billions of dollars. Authored by six health policy experts, the study was published by the Pharmaceutical Policy Research Collaboration at the University of British Columbia. “Full implementation by 2020 is both desirable and feasible,” researchers concluded. “Canada has been waiting for pharmacare since the 1960s.” The provinces are aware of what’s needed and Ontario Health Minister Eric Hoskins, in particular, has been pressing hard to put pharmacare on the national agenda.

What’s lacking is the bold federal leadership. Canadians appear strongly supportive. A recent poll by the Angus Reid Institute found that more than 90 per cent of Canadians back the concept of pharmacare. The Survey also revealed that more than one-in-five Canadians say that they themselves or someone in their household resorted to saving money this past year by not buying drugs ordered by a doctor or by skimping on doses. That’s a prescription for ill health. The existing system is ridiculously expensive for all concerned, including governments. Other countries achieve lower drug costs by purchasing medicine through a single, national buyer of pharmaceuticals. Canada, in contrast, funds drugs through a hodgepodge of private plans and disjointed federal, provincial and territorial systems that still leave many people paying out-of-pocket. It’s estimated that one-in-five households spend $500 or more on prescription medicine annually. And about 7 per cent pay more than $1,000 each year. This occurs because many Canadians aren’t covered by workplace drug insurance plans. And those who are, commonly face extra charges such as deductibles and prescription co-payments. Pharmacare is the answer. Potential savings from bulk-buying through a single system are substantial. The study’s authors cited the example of Lipitor. A year’s supply of this brand name cholesterol-lowering

needs a National Pharmacare Plan The Canada Health Act does not cover prescription drugs, home care or long-term care, prescription glasses or dental care, which means most Canadians pay out-of-pocket for these services. There are several other countries providing Universal Health Care such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Mauritius, Denmark & Chile. All these countries also have a national medication or pharmacare program; it is only Canada which has a universal health care but not a universal pharmacare. Demand appears to be growing for a national pharmacare plan covering prescription drugs costs for all Canadians. And no wonder high prices are forcing a troubling number of households to avoid filling prescriptions, and even more are resorting to steps such as skipping doses or splitting pills in an effort to make medicine last longer. It serves as an evidence that thousands of Canadians are risking aggravated illness and needless suffering because they can’t afford the rising price of drugs. That’s a troubling gap in our health system. And it shouldn’t have to be this way. A study released earlier this year, The Future of Drug Coverage

www.saentertainment.ca

drug costs at least $811 in Canada, according to the report. In New Zealand, where a public authority negotiates prices for the entire country, it’s $15. “In terms of drug prices, Canada’s multi-payer system is among the most expensive in the world,” they conclude. Various studies have pegged Canadawide savings from national pharmacare between $4 billion and $11 billion per year, depending on how the program is structured. That’s based on savings seen internationally. Canada is, in fact, the only country with a universal health care system that doesn’t also cover the cost of prescription medicine. Administration costs represent another burden. Authors of the report note that every public and private drug plan operating in this country spends money on revenue collection, claims management and other bureaucratic functions. Savings from ending this duplication alone were valued at between $1 billion and $2 billion. The March Issue of Canadian Medical Association Journal researchers say the extra total cost to government of providing universal pharmacare could range as high as $5.4 billion a year, but would likely be about $1 billion, depending on exactly how much can be saved through bulk purchases of medications and other measures. At the same time, it would save the private sector the $8.2 billion annually it spends on prescription drugs, mainly through employee health plans.

Saving billions of dollars “When we did the analysis, we were, at first, a little bit surprised,” said study author Steven Morgan, a professor of health policy at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. “Wow. Canada can really save billions of dollars by covering everybody for virtually every drug? And then we started the strongest argument for pharmacare, however, doesn’t concern the money it would save. It’s about giving all Canadians fair and equitable access to medicines they need — drugs that work to keep them healthy, ease their pain, and save their lives. Until that’s done the promise of Canada’s publicly funded health care system will remain only partially delivered”. During the recent election the main issue being economy, we should also focus on the need for a universal pharmacare plan in our country.

Genes, Alcohol and Asian Flushing Dr. Nisha Dogra PhD. MHSc.

Member of American College of Healthcare Executives & Canadian Association of Natural Nutritional Practitioners

W

estern social and cultural trends in alcohol use among Asian American youths demonstrate a great influence by social pressures to consume alcohol. Due to severity of the public health implications, it is important to educate and raise awareness of this health risk and explore a harm reducing method in order to facilitate safe alcohol consumption for affected individuals. Approximately 30 to 50% of Asian populations suffer from the ‘Asian flush reaction’, which is characterized by adverse reactions upon the consumption of alcohol. The Asian flush, sometimes called the “Asian glow,” refers to a common reaction to alcohol among Asians carrying genetic mutationin their alcohol metabolizing enzymes found in the liver. About 50% of people with Asian ancestry are

deficient in the enzyme ALDH that limits the formation of aldehyde dehydrogenase, resulting in a build up of acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde is 30 times more toxic than alcohol itself and is a known carcinogen. Flushing is a result of an accumulation of acetaldehyde in the blood that causes dilation of the capillaries.

Common symptoms include 4Heart facial flushing 4Heart palpitations 4Nausea. Every second of every day, trillions of cells in your body absorbs nutrients and excrete acid waste. Genes give us the enzymes to metabolize alcohol; society gives us the alcohol to metabolize; and our psyches respond in wondrous ways to these combined gifts. Risk factors: This targeted population faces an increased risk of developing disease including colorectal cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and markedly head and neck cancers. Genetic “switch”: A counterpart human gene contributes to a shift from metabolizing alcohol to the formation of fat in heavy drinkers. This

shift can lead to fatty liver syndrome -a precursor to cirrhosis. Researchers at North Carolina State University have found a genetic “switch” in fruit flies that plays an important role in making flies more tolerant to alcohol. In looking at corresponding human genes, a counterpart gene called ME1 was associated with alcohol consumption in humans, as people with certain variations of the gene showed a

tendency to drink stronger alcoholic beverages. Discoveries from model organisms can be applied to insights in human biology, can help us understand the balance between nature and nurture, why we behave the way we do, and -- for better or worse -- what makes us tick.” www.advancedgenomics.ca, email: info@advancedgenomics.ca

s sun tanning leaving your skin with problems or is excessive sweating, heat and dust making your hair dull and lifeless? Easy home therapies using natural ingredients as well as aromatherapy sessions can alleviate your troubles, suggests Blossom Kochhar, a pioneer in the Indian beauty and cosmetic industry. Having spent her childhood in the Nilgiris, Kochhar’s love for nature and her belief in the power of natural, alternate lifestyle inspired her to lay the foundations of Blossom Kochhar Aroma Magic, which offers a range of aromatherapy products for retail. Talking about the effects of aromatherapy that involves the use of essential oils, Kochhar told in an interview “Aromatherapy shows

positive results as it works on your entire system. Usage of essential oils and aromatherapy-based nature derived products, following a proper diet, meditating, exercising and staying fit and healthy, helps in bringing forth the inner beauty of a person.” There are little things one can do to bring a change in appearance even if the summer heat takes a beating on the skin or hair. Excessive sweating, for example, can cause limp, flat and brassy hair. Cure this by washing it out as soon as possible with a mild shampoo and add a teaspoon of instant coffee to the conditioner before using it, she suggested. “Over exposure to sun strips the hair of moisture: so wear a hat or use a hair sunscreen. Humidity is a reason for frizzy and uncontrolled hair, so use a moisturizing hair cream conditioner for it,” Kochhar said. Skin too gets affected by heat and the

Braids

B

consequences can be harmful. So, it’s best to take extra care. “It is very essential to soothe your skin during the dry summer heat. During summer, the most common problem that people face is of either getting tanned or sunburnt. So it is necessary that every two to four hours, one should apply iced water to your skin with a few drops of lavender essential oil,” said the chairperson of the Blossom Kochhar Group of Companies. There’s more you can do to save yourself from harmful sun rays. “Apply a sunscreen at least 15 to 20 minutes before stepping out in the sun. If you’re out in the sun for a longer duration, then apply the sunscreen with a gap of three hours. “To remove the sun tan, use a milk pack once a week. Apply it and leave it on for 20 minutes and then rinse it off,” she added. She believes sweating is one of the key problems in summer

and one can counter this by keeping in mind a few things: Washing the face with cold water and applying aloe vera juice are some of the solutions. “Aloe vera juice is a more watered down version of the popular aloe vera sold as a moisturizer. When applied to the skin, aloe vera has a nice cooling effect. This makes it particularly useful during warmer seasons like summer,” she said. And if you’re someone who believes in homemade remedies for haircare, then Kochhar has some handy tips. “Take a cup of coconut milk and add two tablespoons of gram flour or one teaspoon of shikakai. Apply on the scalp and hair and massage gently. Rinse it out after five minutes. Carrying this out weekly will help you keep off the heat,” she said. Rest, as many would advise, drink a lot of water: Ten glasses minimum, if youlre to follow Kochhar’s advice.

The best emergency hairstyle for you

raids can be a saviour as an emergency hairstyle when youlre unable to wash your locks. From a French braid fringe to snake braid, you can experiment with different types of the hairdo.

Here’s a list of braid styles: • French braid fringe: Create a side parting and, taking the front section from the bigger side, make a plait. Secure it with a thin elastic band or add a flower to hide the elastic. • Front cascading braid: Create a side parting and start braiding directing the hair towards the face as if achieving a braided fringe.

To make a neat braid, make sure you have three hair bundles of equal volume. • Snake braid: Create a side parting and part your hair into three sections. Braid as normal, but take more hair from the top with each twist. Control the shape of the braid by taking looser sections of the hair from the top so the braid goes down on the slight angle. When you reach the opposite side of your head drop the braid down and turn to start braiding to create the second part of the snake. It will almost go like a soft zigzag. Once you finish plaiting, secure your braid using an elastic band or bobby pins.

Store your luxury handbags with love How do you store your handbags? Are they lovingly tucked away waiting to be worn out or are they stuffed under the bed gathering dust? It’s time to give equal importance to your handbags like the way you give to your wardrobe.

Here are 5 ways to keep your priced possessions with care: • Put handbags at eye-level so you have visibility of what you own - this helps you to avoid the 80/20 rule, where most women only use 20 percent of their bags 80 percent of the time. • Handbags need to be contained so they don’t fall over - pop them in pigeon holes to allow them to retain their shape. • Filling your bags with bubble wrap (or

ow long have you been wearing the same shoe size? It is important to realise that women’s feet are constantly changing due to factors such as ageing, weight gain or loss and pregnancy. Still there are a few mistakes that women make when buying that perfect pair. From buying unfit shoes to wearing heels for a long time are the few basic mistakes that ladies make while buying shoes. They are

* Buying shoes that do not fit now. Always buy shoes that fit you now. People constantly try on shoes (especially when the heels are in sales), think to themselves “they feel a little tight”, and then convince themselves “Well, they’ll stretch…”. Nine out of 10 times, they won’t, or at least not enough to make them really comfortable. Don’t buy a pair of heels with the hope that they’ll fit in the future. Also, the majority of us have one foot bigger than the other, so when buying shoes fit the shoe to your larger foot.

* Buying heels in the morning. Shop for heels towards the end of the day where possible. Our feet swell towards the end of the day and this will give you a truer fitting of the shoe by the end of the day. As well as being uncomfortable, no one wants a foot muffin top on a sexy pair of heels.

* Wearing heels for way too long. Wearing heels for a prolonged amount of time is not good for your feet, neither on a short nor long term basis. But letls face it, every lady loves a good pair of heels to complete that perfect OOTD (outfit for the day). If you wear heels to work or on a night out, try to bring a comfortable pair of shoes along with you so you’re not having to wear them for a prolonged period of time. Once youlve finished at work or your event is over, swap those heels for a comfy pair of shoes.

plastic bags if you don’t have bubble wrap) is also great for shape retention. • Use dust bags as daylight and dust aren’t kind to luxury leather so keep them protected. • Don’t let your bags be an afterthought. Ensure they are given their own shelving space where they will not get damaged by other items.

Hire A Top Listing Agent When Selling A Home For The First Time Rahul Gill

Real Estate Expert

Decide What Your Next Move Is First time home sellers often neglect to figure out what their next move is after selling their current home. Will you move into an apartment? Will you be buying a new home? Will you be building a new home? Itls important when selling a home for the first time, you have a strong game plan for your next move. If the game plan is to purchase another home, a first time home seller needs to determine whether they can get preapproved for a mortgage without being contingent on the sale of their current home. While it’s uncommon in most cases that a buyer is able to purchase a home without selling their current home, it’s extremely important to know. Buying and Selling a home simultaneously can be tricky and itls important that a game plan is in place if this your next move!

Price Your Home Correctly First Time Home Sellers Need To Understand The Importance Of Correctly Pricing Their Home!

Before you sell your home for the first time, make sure you check out some of the most important first time home seller tips and tricks below. The number one reason a home doesn’t sell in real estate is because the property is incorrectly priced. There are lots of different reasons why home owners incorrectly price their home and it’s important the first time home sellers don’t make those common real estate pricing mistakes. First time home sellers often have no clue on how a listing price is determined in real estate. There are many different ways a listing price can be determined and it’s important that you understand the various ways. The most common real estate pricing practice is a Comparative Market Analysis that is completed by a real estate professional. A comparative market analysis, also commonly referred to as a CMA, can be summarized as a review of local active homes for sale, past home sales, and also past expired listings. A top producing real estate agent should be able to determine a probable sale price of a home by completing a detailed market analysis. While a CMA is the most common way to determine the price of a home, another accurate way to produce a listing price of a home is by having an appraisal completed on the property. It’s critical that first time home sellers avoid some of the inaccurate ways to

price a home, such as using the homes assessed value or using an online home valuation estimate. There is no possible way an online website based out of Victoria can accurately determine the price of a home in Surrey.

Know What Your Closing Expenses Are When Selling Your Home First time home sellers are often shocked when they learn about the seller expenses that they traditionally are responsible for. One of the hardest pills to swallow for a first time home seller are Realtor fees. First time home sellers often forget that the previous owner of their current home paid the Realtor fees when they purchased their home. Realtor fees are normally the largest expense incurred by a home seller. Other home selling expenses that first time home sellers need to consider include the cost of property transfer taxes. When selling a home for the first time it’s important to keep an updated mortgage pay-off balance handy, if applicable, so when a purchase offer is received you can determine what your closing expenses

will be and there are no surprises a few days before closing.

Final Thoughts Selling a home for the first time can be extremely stressful and exhausting. A first time home seller who has a top producing listing agent in their corner will have a much greater chance of a smooth and successful home sale. The above tips and tricks are some of the most important for any first time home seller. Make sure when selling your home for the first time youlre mentally prepared for the possible upcoming home selling challenges that you may encounter. As always, you want to use an Experienced and Top Real Estate team to list your home. They will know how to present your home in its best possible light, minimizing any flaws, and highlighting all the key assets. It is crucial to selling your home that you choose the right agent! Health benefits of munching on walnuts A

ccording to U.S researcher, Joe Vinson of the University of Scranton, “Walnuts rank above peanuts, almonds, pecans, pistachios and other nuts. A handful of walnuts contains almost twice as much antioxidants as an equivalent amount of any other commonly consumed nut” But unfortunately, people don’t eat a lot of them. “Antioxidants in walnuts were two to 15 times as potent as vitamin E- renowned for its powerful antioxidant effects, which protect the body against damaging natural chemicals involved in causing disease,” Vinson says. In fact in a U. S. study, nut consumption was associated with a significantly lower risk of weight gain and obesity. But you need to keep the portion small (maximum 7 walnuts a day).

Care for the heart Being a rich source of Omega-3 fatty acids they keep the bad cholesterol level in check and also raise the level of good

cholesterol in the body. A handful of these can keep you away from cardiovascular diseases, stroke, coronary artery diseases and other potential dangers related to the heart.

Beats inflammatory diseases They have the power to tackle inflammatory diseases like asthma, psoriasis, eczema and rheumatoid arthritis.

Walnuts also boast strong astringent properties that protect the skin from dryness. In fact, for the same reason, they are also used since ages in massage therapy, aromatherapy and cosmetic products.

Fight constipation Walnuts can also be consumed as laxatives as they can help against constipation.

For beautiful hair Walnuts are a key hair food, as they are an excellent source of biotin, an essential nutrient known to strengthen hair, improve hair growth and reduce hair fall. A deficiency of biotin leads to frequent hair loss and breakage.

here are several possible ways to skim through one’s hectic unhealthy lifestyle and criticize him for it. In between myriads of health books and advises from health experts--there will always be a fraction of doubt about its authenticity. Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo with Allan Richards introduced an interesting theory behind the Blood Type Diet in their book ‘Maximise Your Health With The Blood Type Diet’, nearly 30 years ago. Dr. D’Adamo states that the food type can be segregated according to the blood groups. For instance, one has to diet according to his blood type, which will help him digest the food more efficiently and manage weight loss quickly. “A person’s blood type reflects on his/ her internal system. Their blood type in fact regulates the way their body absorbs nutrients from the food they eat. Healthy eating majorly depends upon the way the body reacts towards metabolizing a particular food type. I recommend to eat according to your blood type in order to stay fit and healthy,” says Neeraj Mehta, a fitness instructor and nutritionist. So, let’s have a look at the various blood groups and understand their characteristics.

Blood Group A To have a healthier mind and body, blood group A requires nutrients from carbohydrates. Due to low levels of hydrochloric acid and intestinal alkaline phosphatase with high intestinal disaccharide digestive enzyme levels in the stomach, the body can digest

health carbohydrates more efficiently than digest and metabolize animal protein and fat. Blood type A must consume soy proteins, grains and vegetables frequently during the day. Especially, eat fruits that are

Syndrome X as it produces higher cortisol levels in stressful situations. Blood type B must avoid chicken, wheat, corn, lentils, tomatoes, peanuts and sesame seeds as it will affect the metabolic process resulting in fatigue, fluid retention and hypoglycaemia. Bs must have larger intake of red meat, green vegetables, eggs and low fat dairy products.

Blood Group AB

Food guide according to your blood type alkaline based like apple, dates, berries, peaches etc. Type A should strictly avoid papayas, mangoes and oranges as it will affect the digestive system. And not to forget dairy products, they are not good for As, as they provoke insulin reactions in the body. This also makes them prone to higher risks of getting cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. With proper diet plan, it will give them higher performance, mental clarity, greater vitality and increased longevity. Type A should try and eat foods in their natural state and avoid skipping meals.

Blood Group B Blood type B are more flexible compared to A or O. Unlike, these two blood groups,

This rare blood type as Dr D’Adamo claims, “Type AB has Type A’s low stomach acid, however, they also have Type B’s adaptation to meats,” which can be a problem as the meat stored in the body turns into fats. ABs should also avoid caffeine and alcohol during stressful situations. Especially, smoked or cured meats can cause stomach cancer. ABs have a sensitive digestive tract, so one must eat at small intervals to manage insulin levels. Seafood is the best source of proteins for AB blood type, particularly mahimahi, red snapper, salmon, sardines and tuna. It is also advisable to not mix starches and protein in the same meal as it will create indigestion. Thus, eggs, tofu, seafood, veggies and cultured dairy such as yogurt or kefir make an ideal diet for AB type. ABs can eat red meat, but sparingly.

Blood Group O Blood type O carry higher levels of acid, which has the ability to digest both protein and fat easily. Cholesterols from animal products help the digestive tract and absorb calcium in the body.
