S I MET HIM IN HIS OFFICE, for the first time, this 35 years young adult was exuding an air of simple living and high thinking. During my confabulations he apprised me that he was born and educated at England. Navdip, a Bachelor in Business Economics from Nottington University Nottington England , air dashed to Canada- courtesy family decision-in 2004 led by his rev. dad Sr. Balwinder Singh Uppal. Towards his first tryst with commercial world, locally, he made a humble beginning as a Sales Associate with an Audio Video shop to have a feel of self-earned dollars and pay his bills. Meanwhile he helped his dad to set up Select Pizza chain in the City of Surrey which is running successfully at present with 3 locations. His strength, being his Bachelorette in Business Economics, is the under current that drove him to find his moorings in banking

parlance as he worked –for a decade- with various banks namely: CIBC as a Teller, RBC as an Accounts Manager and in TD Bank as a Mortgage Specialist. It was in the year 2014, that he took a plunge to start his own business as a Mortgage Broker with the famous group named The Mortgage Centre- Axis Mortgage. Head Quartered in Surrey. When asked to dwell on his decision, he stated,” In business the more you work; the more you are paid.” When requested to comment on his performance for the last 3 years he informed that he has successfully roped in a business of circa 20 million dollars spanning over 60 deals approx. He hastened to add that it was possible with holistic planning under one roof and relentless team work. His mantra for life is,” Have dreams and pursue them. Try to be better than the previous day. Learn from the past and succeed in life” During his free time, he loves to go on a long drive and spend time with his family with two kids in

6 awesome ideas to make your home ready for

Diwali

I

t’s almost Diwali time! Give your space a neutral shade and then add dramatic pops of celebratory colours with translucent lamps, oversized flowers, cushions, blinds and vases, fairy lights twirled around trees and sequin runners on your dining table. Interior architect Nisha Jamwal shares useful tips... Play with Change You cannot change furniture but you can change the placement and the look. Make your furniture more sassy by using multi-upholstery patterns. Throw out obsolete pieces that hog space. Feng shui dictates that clearing space brings about positive energy. Similarly, to create more ostensible energy, create pockets of space for vibrant design to show through. Walk around from room to room and visualise the points where dashes of change and colour will add life. Select Festive Fabrics Change the upholstery of one otto-

man, a divan or just big floor cushions into more festive colours. Saffron, ochre, crimson, teal, peacock green, when mixed and matched and alternated, produce a sense of attentiongrabbing vibrancy. Go for gold For an ultra luxe feel, bring in some metallic gold into your rooms. Bring in some accents and accessories that have gold leaf. If you are feeling more adventurous, gold leaf a piece of dowdy furniture or one accent wall. Use a combination of matte and shiny gold. Add Accessories Sparkling sequin embroidery, antique banarsi zari, shining metallic copper urns with trees that mount fairy lights... create an exhilarating experience. You can even use an antique zari sari as a wall hanging and celebrate our crafts. Deep royal blue and mustard yellow zari and sequin cushions pepper the colour scheme with life.

/saentertainmentnewsmagazine

@ansalmedia

Use furnishings with rich bold colours — glowing copper rag rugs and throws — but less busy prints around your conversation spots. Pick some flowers Cluster diyas, candelabra, glass lamps and even candles in strategic locations, instead of unimaginative rows, are enough to add atmosphere. Floating candles in large glass bowls with flowers and petals sprinkled don’t cost much but give an exotic feel. Go for inexpensive flowers for a natural fresh feel. The market is flooded with crushed chintz lotuses, chrysanthemums and lilies in silk of muted colours. Marigold is still a favourite, and when set against indigo, looks chic. Only you can give your home that twist that looks truly beautiful. Diwali, after all, is a celebration of

/saentertainmentnewsmagazine

/saentertainment_magazine

homecoming – a home that’s your refuge from all the stresses in your lives. Light the Way l Colored and patterned lamps are always a good way to add to the festive charm. The transparency or translucence of lamps and opulent lighting fixtures, especially pendulums hung in clusters and colours, have very little visual weight, creating impact without eating into your space. Add new dramatic floor lamps and change the shades of existing lamps. Whimsical lamps are very chic. Large oversized works of art when lit well add to the glow of a room. The revival of art deco lamps and organic designs of lighting inspired by sea creatures are a huge hit across the world these days. An antique Osler or Baccarat chandelier can be very dramatic. BCIBN’s Third Diwali Gala 2017 A Grand Success

V

ancouver - Over three hundred people including businessmen, dignitaries, community leaders and representatives from political parties attended BCIndia Business Network’s 3rd Annual Grand Diwali Gala at Fairmont Waterfront Hotel on September 22, 2017. Among those who attended included Hon. Carla Qualtrough, Federal Minister of Civil Supplies and Procurement, Hon. Bruce Ralston, Minister of Jobs, Trade & Technology, Hon. Harry Bains, Minister of Labour, Hon. Abhilasha Joshi, Consul General of India; Randeep Sarai MP, Hon.Ed Fast, former Minister of International Trade, prominent politician Hon.Stockwell Day, Former Federal Minster Herb Dhaliwal; James Howey and Serge Corbeil from Air Canada, Kathy Kinlock, President of BCIT and Dr. Lane Trotter, President of Langara College. The occasion became even more celebratory when Minister Carla Qualtrough and her Excellency Abhilasha Joshi unveiled a special stamp jointly released by Canada Post and India Post on the occasion of Diwali. “It is indeed an honor that the Minister has chosen BCIndia Network’s Platform to release the stamps here in Vancouver. Diwali is one of India’s largest festivals and this gesture showcases the importance the federal government is giving to Canada-India relations,” said Mr. Vivek Savkur, Chairman Emeritus of BC-IBN.

President of BC-IBN Catherine Sas, welcomed the audience to the Diwali Gala and thanked each and everyone for being so engaged with the organization. “It’s wonderful to note that BC-IBN is growing from strength to strength and we sincerely hope that more and more people would become members of our organization,” said Sas. She also announced an Awards Gala that will be organized by BC-IBN on 26th April 2018 and will honour both BC businesses doing work in India and Indian businesses making their mark here. “If you wish to nominate any business please visit our website” she said Speaking on the occasion, Hon. Bruce Ralston, Minster of Jobs, Trade & Technology said that the Government of British Columbia was committed to furthering trade with India and emphasized that he would work proactively with organizations such as BC-IBN to further improve trade. The audience were kept entertained throughout the evening with a host of scintillating dance performances and were also treated to a delicious Indian buffet. Air Canada were the generous sponsors of two pairs of Premium Economy tickets from Vancouver to India and these were won two very lucky guests in the audience. BC-IBN is a networking organization whose mandate is to facilitate trade between BC and India. They have organized a number of networking events which have been highly suc-

cessful. Their next big project is a joint concert by famous Indian Composer Ricky Kej and his Team of Grammy Award winners along with a leading Philharmonic orchestra from BC, in July 2018. “This concert will focus on the ravages of climate change, environment and the Green Peace movement and we are lucky to have SFU as our partner on this big immensely important project,” said Mr. Savkur. Savkur also announced the proposed project HorasisGlobal India Business Meet which will attract approx. 300 businesses from India to BC. “This ambitious project in 2019 is aimed at boosting BC-India trade manifold,” he said.He was hopeful that our BC Government would accept the proposal, which would change the facade of BC Business with India.

Huge responsibility to present Saina Nehwal on big screen: Shraddha Kapoor

A

s Shraddha Kapoor gears up to bring the journey of ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal to the big screen, the actor says it will be one of the most challenging projects of her career. “I feel her (Nehwal) career is going great guns, especially the way she has bounced back after her injury, it is tremendous and so inspiring. It is a huge responsibility on all of us to make sure that we do a thorough job of presenting her on the big screen. It is a daunting and challenging job,” said Shraddha. Shraddha is currently busy doing preparation for the biopic on the 27-year-old London Olympics bronze medallist and the actor says she is enjoying playing badminton. “I fell in love with the game when I started playing it. But it is very challenging. On the days when I practice badminton, my days are completely different and I am a different person when I don’t play. I usually start playing it from 6 am in morning everyday for two hours or so. We aim to practice every day but if my arms or legs get too sore then I don’t do the class. I feel tempted to play that time as well

but I have been advised not to play as I would get prone to injuries.” Shraddha, 30, says she often texts the badminton star when she has queries regarding the game. “She is so prompt and helpful always. I shared a video of me practicing badminton and she gave me her feedback. She is such a inspirational person.” When asked if Saina would be seen in a cameo appearance in the film, the actor says, “It is all work in progress so you never know.” Courtesy: PTI

A Girl in a Whirl Contd. from previous issue (Part 14) We with Jassi’s mom went to see the pandit again and told him everything. “When we pray to god, our sins burn, obstacles are bound to be there. Therefore, when we do astrological treatments and feel hurdles in our way, just understand that treatment is working effectively. Never leave any treatment or prayer incomplete. I’m also praying to Mars for you. That’s why you are feeling so much stress. Just complete your prayer calmly; Mata Rani will bless you with everything.”, the pandit explained. The pandit took out some cardamoms from a red color bag and gave me some of them. He asked us to boil five of them in our morning tea water. He told that the tea would keep our mind calm. He asked me to cast the charm into a water stream after my forty-day

meditation. He also asked me to see him before going for my interview in Canada embassy. We came home. I did as the pandit had told me. My forty-day prayer was complete on March 14. I cast the charm into Sutlej River. I got my interview letter on March 16. Canada embassy had called me to Delhi for an interview March 25. We went to see the pandit again. We told him about my interview. He made another charm and gave that to me. He asked me to keep that in my purse at the time of my interview. My dad and I reached Delhi by Shan-ePanjab train a day before my interview day. I had secured all my marriage pictures, documents and passport in my bag very carefully. I had placed the charm in the internal pocket of my purse safely. I was interviewed. An English lady officer asked me many questions. God knew why I was feeling that it would be alright whether I get the visa or not. I was feeling both ways leading to my death. I answered every question boldly. She asked me to wait in the lobby. My name was announced after about one and a half hours and I was called to the wicket number four. I was given immigration visa. My dad came out very happy. We saw that a married girl like me was crying bitterly. We learned that somebody had stolen her passport from her purse. She was also married

in Canada and she had come to get immigration visa. Her mom, dad and brothers were with her. All of them were very upset. They were unable to decide what to do. Then, a well-educated person adviced them to complain to the embassy and find out on their CCTV video footage what had happened. Well, we went to Sri Sees Ganj sahib Gurdwara, paid our obeisance, listened kirtan and had langar. My dad called Sam around 7 A.M. Canada Pacific Time and told him that I had got visa. We also called Ludhiana and gave this news. We went to Paharh Ganj, boarded a bus and left for Ludhiana. We reached Ludhiana around 6 A.M. Mom, Meenu and Sunny were very happy for my visa. But I had no excitement for it. “My didi got visa for Canada. Didi, you don’t look happy.”, Meenu asked my chirpily. “Meenu, I’m very tired because of traveling.”, I replied. We were really very tired. First dad and then I had a shower. Then after having breakfast, I went to my room and slept. Meenu went to her college and Sunny to his school. Mom took care of all my documents and passport and put them at a safe place. Then mom got busy in domestic chores. Contd. in next issue

Diljit Dosanjh looks intense as a soldier in his next movie

A

ctor Diljit Dosanjh has shared the first look at his character from an upcoming Punjabi film he will be a part of. The yet untitled film will be based on World War I and he will play a soldier in it. Diljit also shared a vague release date for the film. “Film Based on #Worldwar1...Releasing Early 2018,” he wrote in a tweet. In the photo, Diljit is dressed in a soldier’s uniform, fastened with leather belts. His face and uniform are splattered with blood and dirt as looks ahead with a stern expression on his face. Is it weird how much he looks like Ranbir Kapoor from this angle? A few days ago, he posted more pictures from the film sets. “Its a moment of Honor to be standing next to living Legend Yograj Singh Ji...#Worldwar1,” he wrote in one of the tweets. His fans were impressed with the new look and showered the actor with several praises. “The much awaited and very promising look...all the best Bhaji,” a fan wrote. “Wow 2018 starting will b rocking with ur movie WW1..all the best. Eagrly waiting paji,” wrote another. Diljit is also working on another film by Shaad Ali, co-starring Taapsee Pannu and Angad Bedi. Courtesy: HT

Priyanka Chopra is all smiles as she meets UNICEF’s youngest goodwill ambassador at UN’s Global Goals Awards

How does she manage to do all this so effortlessly? This is what fans of Priyanka Chopra are asking thinking if the diva has made clones of herself. After rocking the Emmy Awards on Monday, the lady attended the Global Goals Awards held at the UN General Assembly in New York City. She chose a crisp white gown with full sleeves and wore her hair in side waves. A pair of danglers and soft makeup completed her look. It was a night to felicitate and honour young people who were working for the upliftment of war victims and others in various areas. Courtesy: bollywoodlife

Ranveer Singh

talks about the changes he underwent for

Padmavati P

admavati has been making news ever since its announcement and fans could barely hold their excitement to watch DeepVeer in another film together. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Padmavati stars Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor in lead roles. It’s for the first time that RS will be seen playing the role of an antagonist in his film career as Alauddin Khilji in the film who is obsessed with the beauty

of Queen Padmavati. When asked about his role in the movie, Ranveer told a leading tabloid, “It was a very difficult character to play. I am a people pleaser, admittedly. I like to spread cheer and laughter. I like to keep the atmosphere light – even if it means making stupid jokes and acting silly and crass. But, when I became Alauddin Khilji for the movie, there’s no trace of that person. Some actors are that way, where the external starts to affect the internal. At some

point during filming, everybody realized that at one point in the morning you’ll have Ranveer and the rest of the day will be Khilji. My whole energy changed. This is good, be-

cause at least I know I’m doing an honest job in the film. But, yeah, I’m almost done now and I have to say what I told myself holds true to some extent. All the darkness has been lived out, it’s been addressed. It’s almost like therapy.” The teaser of this historical drama released few days back, while the film hits the theatres on November 17.

Alia Bhatt

finally breaks silence on his break-up with Sidharth Malhotra

A

lia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra have appeared in films together and have known to share a really close bond with each other. Some said they were much more than just being good friends and instead were in a romantic relationship for quite some time. Though, both Alia and Sid never really came out and spoke about this. Though, recently their relationship came into spotlight when the rumours of their alleged break up

started doing rounds on the internet. Earlier a source close to the actors told a leading daily, “Sidharth and Alia have split, and unlike previous instances, this time, it seems permanent. They will not get back together again. Alia and Sid are avoiding each other and are not even on talking terms now. Maybe with time, they will get back to being friends, but for now, they are maintaining a distance from each other. They were having a lot of fights in the recent times. Mutually,

they decided it wasn’t working out and it was better to end it.” On the other hand, Alia who has been shooting for Meghna Gulzar’s Raazi finally came out and spoke about these rumours doing rounds. Alia even went on to reveal that she wasn’t aware of these break-up updates at all. In her conversation with a leading daily, she said, “I didn’t know about that at all. Such talks (about breakup) started even before I travelled to Patiala.” She further added, “Yes, all’s good with me (smiles). And as I said, I am good with my films and all. As for break-up talks, I think I will never stop being part of those conversations (laughs). But hopefully, for some time, there will be no ‘breakup’, ‘make-up’ or ‘link-up’ for me as I only want to think about Raazi and my other films.” On the work front, Alia and Vicky Kaushal starrer Raazi will hit the theatres on May 11 next year.

Fashion style tips for working women

T

he work wear trend for women today is bending a lot towards floral miniatures in bold colours, and interesting capes and jackets too, say experts. Shweta Sharma, Founder at lifestyle brands ombrelane.com and Sneha Mehta, Founder at kukoonthelabel. com, have listed work wear trends that could be looked at by the modern woman:

ries are the way to go. There is nothing more crisp and classic than pairing white and black separates together. This combination can be a go-to look if you are running late and have no time to dress up.

Prints: Incorporating prints into work wear has given an opportunity for the modern working woman to explore several prints and motifs that describe her. Prints can be easily incorporated into any occasion — for a meeting it can be paired with a blazer and for an evening out it can be highlighted by a necklace.

Wear Prints: Printed scarves in bright colors can instantly perk up your look. Keeping the entire look minimal and wearing solid colors will help you stand out. It’s a great option for mid-week meetings.

Try Pastels: Neutral and darker tones are not the only options available anymore. Invest in eternal pastels, but also of the bolder ones ranging from deep reds to natural greens.

Skirt it Up: Pencil skirts to ankle-length flared ones, paired with the right top and polished accessories can be your Friday favorite.

Monotones: Monotone blazers, solid flared pants, minimal, classic accesso-

Capes and long jackets are a great investment: Important meetings are to be dealt with looking powerful and the look should command attention. A smart cape is a fashion essential. Courtesy: IANS

Lipstick trends making waves this season : Shift from matte to creamy

I

n today’s world, people are not only conscious about how they look but also how their skin feels and lipsticks are an important factor in making or breaking your image. This makeup tool is not just about different shades or textures but also about ingredients, application and choosing the right trends, say experts. Sargam Dhawan, Director of cosmetic and personal care brand Paul Penders India, doles out tips on some lipstick trends that are making waves this season. The herbal route: Using vegan and organic lipstick not only protects the lips from harsh chemicals but also preserves the natural texture and colour of the lips. Applying lipsticks with less chemicals reduces chances of lip discolouration. Shift from matte to creamy: Creamy matte or satin finish provide a soft and smooth look while leaving the right amount of colour and shine. Creamy Matte texture is also known to stay on the lips for longer hours and avoids the lipstick to get flaky on the lips. Ditch the nudes: Get over with the nudes already. A pale pink, a peachy coral or a vibrant fuchsia would be the perfect pick for the Indian skin this festive season. Applying natural pink lipsticks is perfect for the desk to dine look. The blend of orange: As we know, red never goes out of style. However, this season it’s raining orange. A subtle blend of orange in your red can get you the perfect glamorous look for the season. Annanya Sabarwal, Country Head of cosmetic and personal care brand KIKO Milano India shares some finest trends to wear your pout in 2017.

Top glitter coat: A glitter top coat adds a gorgeous shimmering sheen, be it over a lipstick or applied straight to bare lips. Applying a subtle hint of glitter over your lips can make your lips pop just how you want them to. Apply your favourite lip colour and then a little amount of transparent gloss. Then add the glitter — this way, it will be fixed in all your lip. The unconventional bold shades: Unconventional bold shades like blue, purple and grey can be a game changer for parties if worn with confidence. Rocking a bold hue draws attention to your lips and makes you stand out.. Nude mattes: Everyone is well acquainted with nude shades, natural matte lipsticks are perfect for day wear and also go with smokey eyes for evening wear. Use natural matte shades, a tone lighter or darker to give the perfect definition to your lips. Courtesy: IANS

ion and lifestyle brand — on how to rock your festive dressing with fusion wear: Fusion dresses: Offbeat dressing is what you should be looking at to ace your festive look the right way

— from modest midi dresses with a hint of silver, embroidery work and prints, to an elegant, embellished maxi gown that can give everyone a run for their money. Dresses are the best and the most chic way to start this season on a fresh note.

Evergreen dhoti pants: For those who are a little sceptical about their outfit and want to play it safe, one can always pick up dhoti pants along with basic plain t-shirts to go with them. Ways to travel with jewelry and keep it all 2) Buttons: Extra buttons can be made useful by using them to hang small earrings and studs and they can be put in a small box or zip pouches. 3) Straws are easy: Another creative and safe way to keep your neckpieces and chains is to put them between the straws and carry them without having to worry about breaking or the chains getting tangled. 4) Baby towels: Travel towel can be useful as well if you put your jewellery safely in between and then wrap in a soft baby towel and tie the end of the towel with hair ties.

W

hile travelling is fun but packing jewellery can be cumbersome. Disposable plates, buttons are some of the elements that can be used to save your jewellery and time, suggest experts. Manju Kothari, creative director at Entice and ShehzadZaveri, creative director at Minawala (jewellery brands) have listed few tricks that could work wonders:

5) Tin cases with cotton balls: The useless small tin containers can be used ideally for storing small jewellery like stud earrings and pendants that you don’t want to lose or break. 6) Socks: This can be the smartest option while packing jewellery in your travel bag. This will save your time in going nuts over jewellery storing options and this will work as a multipurpose compact deal of storing one necessary thing into another that will let you save a lot of space.

1) Disposable plates: The plastic disposable plates can be used to insert your earrings and studs. Wrapped in a plastic pouch, they are super accessible to carry and travel.

Fill Your Kitchen with Positive Energy for positive vibes in

Food You EAT Daily... Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM (A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp.)

The ancient Greeks vouch that if the food they cook had positive energy and unconditional love, their dishes would be masterpieces and would heal them at the same time.

Be calm and happy when cooking food for positive vibes else the food will have negative vibes and the food will not be tickling the taste buds in toto.

A

s they say coming events caste their shadows before. When you walk into a house for the first time, you instantly get a sense that the person who lives there in is happy and relaxed or a worried one — and some of those good vibes rub off on you, too. The point I want to drive home is the correlation between a person’s mood and the space they inhabit or co-inhabit. Likewise, everyone- with womenfolk in particularspent some time daily in the kitchen to prepare or reheat food; they need to be cool, calm, composed, collectedand in good mood when cooking food in the kitchen for positive vibes of energy otherwise the food will be missing the taste it ought to be. The mood inside the house gets percolated into the person preparing the food. Let us discuss the tips to have a balance in your kitchen towards positivity, gratitude, and gracefulness: Color in your kitchen drives the mood: It’s well established that mood drives kitchen and color can affect our mood. While it’s correct that certain colors tend to be associated with certain moods; it’s also true that color is extremely personal to all of us. So, even though yellow is an optimistic color, exhibiting hope, you won’t experience it that way if you do not like yellow. Your positive associations are what count, so trust your intuition Makeuse of essential oils, a daily routine: Just as color can lift our mood, scent can be calming, reenergizing, or clarifying. all-purpose cleaner; and orange oil is cheerful and works well for degreasers. Refer to various Kitchen archives for recipes for any mood or event. Eat food which is good to give positive energy: We’re all made of energy, and we therefore require the receipt of energy in the form of food, air and water for sustenance and continuous good health. We also require thoughts made up of positivevibrational energy. We can improve our energy vibration and better connect to ourselves, nature and Almighty by eating highly nutritious energetic foods and eliminating unhealthy thoughts and relationships. Eating high-energy foods help us reach higher consciousness and better connect with our higher or ultimate source. When eating fresh organic fruits and vegetables off the tree, the vibrational energy benefit of the food is high and rich in nutrients from the sun. Many fast food restaurants, large grocery food chains, and even middle-of-the-road eateries offer food that is of a very low vibrational quality, which doesn’t add any valuable nutrients to the body. Eating high amounts of these foods can result in bad health. Food that’s prepared by loving and caring hands adds to the good energy of the dish. Prepare food slowly, lovingly and peacefully. Above all, the Greeks show gratitude by giving thanks to God for his guidance and for the wonderful food they are about to enjoy. Gratitude, truth and love play a great role to have the highest energy of vibrations. Foods with high vibrational energy and nutrients include organic nuts, fruits, vegetables and fresh herbs. Avoid or Keep to a minimum foods such as meat, poul-

They have little or no good vibrational energy and nutrition to add to your body. As per experts, to lift the energetic vibration of your food, give thanks and bless your food before eating, and even while preparing and cooking it to decrease the negative energy vibration left on these ingredients when eating, it’s also important to create an aura of peacefulness. Think positive thoughts and pour your own positive energy into what you are eating. Below is short list of highand low-energy foods: High • Fresh, certified organic fruits and vegetables • Natural supplements, like spirulina for iron • Herbal Teas and spices,Pure or filtered water • Healthy oils, like olive oil and coconut oil • Nuts and seeds,•Fermented foods • Raw chocolate,Raw honey • Legumes,Grains such as buckwheat, brown rice, amaranth, and spelt Low • Genetically modified (GMO) food, and conventional food that’s been treated with chemicals and pesticides • White rice, basmati rice and flours • Sugars, sweeteners (artificial etc.) but Stevia is ok. • Coffee ,Sodas ,Alcohol • Meat, fish and poultry. Moderation is the key. Consumption of red meat once a week is ok. • Processed, packaged, canned and fast foods • Unhealthy oils, like canola, cottonseed, margarine, and vegetable oils

• Frozen foods,Pasteurized cows milk, yogurt and cheese • Cooked foods, deep fried foods , chips and microwaving food Fill your kitchen with leafy greens. Vegetables bring your kitchen to life. Certain types are even said to bring luck too. Irish tradition recommends clover and Chinese Feng Shui values lucky bamboo. Both have great medicinal value. Use salt to kick away bad vibes. Salt does more than just flavouring a food. Because of its ability to absorb and dry, it’s also used to clear negative energy from a home. Some cultures, just leave a bowl of coarse kosher or sea salt in each of the four corners of kitchen for 24 hours, and then flush the salt down the drain and not use it, as it may have bad vibes in it.! Spend some time to de-clutter on regular basis. When we clear space, we shift something inside, too. It doesn’t take a lot of time, either. It gives a soothing effect on our inner being also as it takes overbearing weight of negative energy out of us. Turn your dish soap into an aromatherapy experience. Most of us, every day, do the dishes, and the scent in the dish soap really impact our mood. If you’re dealing with heaps of greasy pans and chemical dish soap, it’s going to impact you down. On the bright side, small changes can boost you up. You can either invest in a great-smelling store-bought soapor add a few drops of your favourite essential oil. I prefer citrus scents i.e Satsuma, lemon and orange. Bring something handmade into your kitchen. There’s an undeniable energy that is held within

This is the reason why many people use bamboo kitchen gadgets for steaming the food. Add a bit of brass, copper, or bronze. According to some Feng Shui schools, the kitchen symbolizes prosperity and the metal element helps to boost positive health. Let us add some iron, copper, brass, or bronze into your kitchen for a positive reason. It adds warmth to your decor also. Wash your windows. Natural light is a powerful healer, and most of us don’t get enough of it daily. One simple way to reconnect with light is to live in a house or place where there is enough fresh air and light. Keep your windows clean also so that you experience fresh vibes of positive energy on continuous basis. Conclusion Put fresh flowers in the kitchen to make it look acheery one. Simple thoughts of gratitude for the nice cookware, appliances and dishes we own, lift our spirit. Keeping the kitchen clean helps in a long way. Keep the counter decluttered, neatand clean. The ancient Greeks vouch that if the food they cook had positive energy and unconditional love, their dishes would be masterpieces and would heal them at the same time. To lift the energetic vibration of your food, give thanks to Almighty and bless your food before eating, and even while preparing and cooking it to decrease the negative energy vibration left on these ingredients . it’s also important to create an atmosphere of peacefulness. While preparing food , always think of positive thoughts and pour your own positive energy into what you are eating. Ameen.

udden infant death syndrome (SIDS), is the sudden unexplained death of a child less than one year of age. Diagnosis requires that the death remains unexplained even after a thorough Autopsy and detailed death scene investigation. There is usually no evidence of struggle and no noise produced.90% Cases Occur before 6 months of age,Typically between 2 to 4 Months,Boys are more Affected than Girls In BC about 30 Families Every Year will face this Devastating Situation The cause of SIDS is unknown. Although studies have identified risk factors for SIDS, such as putting infants to bed on their stomachs, there has been little understanding of the syndrome’s biological process or its potential causes. The frequency of SIDS does appear to be influenced by social, economic, and cultural factors, such as maternal education, race or ethnicity, and poverty. SIDS is believed to occur when an infant with an underlying biological vulnerability, who is at a critical development age, is exposed to an external trigger. It is seen in Higher Incidence in Mothers Who Smoke during Pregnancy, Nicotine may Alter

Placing an infant to sleep while lying on the stomach or the side increases the risk.[This increased risk is greatest at two to three months of age.Elevated or reduced room temperature also increases the risk, as does excessive bedding, clothing, soft sleep surfaces, and stuffed animals.Bumper Pads may increase the risk of SIDS due to the risk of suffocation. They are not recommended for children under one years of age as this risk of suf-

Genetics Plays a role also, it is Much more common in First born Males Drinking of alcohol by parents is linked to SIDS.A particular study found a positive correlation between the two during New Years celebrations and weekends. A number of measures have been found to be effective in preventing

SIDS including changing the sleeping position, breastfeeding, limiting soft bedding, immunizing the infant and using pacifiers. The use of electronic monitors has not been found to be useful as a preventative strategy. The incidence of SIDS has fallen in a number of countries in which this recommendation has been widely adopted.Sleeping on the back does not appear to increase the risk of choking even with Gastro Esopha-

geal Reflux. While infants in this position may sleep more lightly this is not harmful.Sharing the same room as one’s parents but in a different bed may decrease the risk by half. Product safety experts advise against using pillows, overly soft mattresses, sleep positioners, Bumper Pads (crib bumpers), stuffed animals, or fluffy bedding in the crib and recommend instead dressing the child warmly and keeping the crib “naked Blankets or other clothing should not be placed over a baby’s head. Many other studies have also reached conclusions that vaccinations reduce the risk of SIDS. Studies generally show that SIDS risk is approximately halved by vaccinations. Families who are impacted by SIDS should be offered emotional support and grief counseling. The experience and manifestation of grief at the loss of an infant are impacted by cultural and individual differences. More Research is Required to Figure out the Cause and then Develop Strategies to Prevent it.

Is Orthodontic Treatment Inevitable? C

onsidering 80% of North American teens are currently undergoing orthodontic treatment, braces and Invisalign Teen seem like a rite of passage. Every day, parents visiting our Abbotsford or Surrey orthodontic clinic ask, “Will my kid need braces?” or, “Are braces inevitable?” There are a variety of factors that determine the answer to those questions. To shed light on the subject, we’ll go over when braces are needed, the causes of malocclusion, or an improper bite, and if orthodontic treatment can be avoided with preventative measures. Will My Child Need Braces? Haven’t we all crossed paths with one those lucky people who have a fantastic smile without the help of orthodontics? Yet, they seem so few and far between. That’s because research indicates that 80% of kids and teens have some degree of malocclusion with crowding being the most common, followed by overjet, often referred to as an overbite. Whileanyone in this 80% could benefit in some way from braces or Invisalign, not all of them will be in jeopardy if they skip the teethstraightening process, particularly those with very mild cases. The majority of the time, treatment is recommended to improve oral hygiene, for cosmetic purposes and to ensure long-term oral health. All of these are important, valid reasons for undergoing treatment. Yet, it’s estimated that around 15% of patients have a serious, handicapping malocclusion, meaning it interferes with chewing, speaking or even causes pain. In these cases, it’s absolutely necessary for your child or yourself to seek out treatment and the early you do it, the better the outcome will be. To get back to the question at hand, statistically, it’s highly likely that your child will have a degree of malocclusion. Whether or not they wear braces, unless they fall into the 15% with serious orthodontic issues, will be a personal choice. However, when weighing the pros and cons, know that the benefits of straight teeth include being able to properly clean them to avoid expensive, painful dental work, having aligned jaws, which may ward off TMJ pain, headaches and changes to facial structure, preventing future bone loss, and more. Also, considering we’re a society that really values the appearance of people’s smiles, even patients whose crooked teeth are merely a cosmetic concern, particularly kids and teens who are vulnerable to teasing, will still want to consider braces or Invisalign. The power of self-confidence shouldn’t be underestimated! What Causes Crooked Teeth? A lot of orthodontic issues are caused

Like we just mentioned, losing baby teeth too early can create issues and knocking out permanent teeth has the potential to be even more problematic. • Keep an eye on harmful habits like nail biting or pen chewing, both of which are associated with a front crossbite. While recommendations vary, the American Academy of Pediatrics takes the stance that children should stop drinking from a bottle by age two and sippy cups should only be used as a brief transition to regular cups. The majority of experts say parents should try to wean toddlers from their pacifier by age three. When it comes to finger or thumb sucking, which is a bit harder to put the kibosh on than pacifier use, Dr. Sharma usually tells parents to try to break the habit when a child is four or five. We even have a recent post on the topic if you need some guidance. So, is orthodontic treatment worth it? For people with moderate or severe malocclusion, it definitely is. Even for those with more mild cases, the boost in confidence and improved oral hygiene are certainly valuable. Schedule a free consultation with Dr. Sharma at Aura Orthodontics to have your child evaluated. He’ll examine their mouth, chat with you about your options and help you decide if they need treatment. If they do, we offer metal braces, clear braces, lingual braces, Invisalign and Invisalign Teen in Surrey and Abbotsford. We have the expertise and technology to ensure treatment is as fast and comfortable as possible to give your child the healthy, beautiful smile they deserve.

Intercontinental Six- A- Side By Harjit Sandhu

A

nnual Intercontinental Six A side was hosted by Cricket BC at Stanley Park on September 4th, 2017. 10 teams participated in this one day event, and Team India led by Harmandeep Singh beat USA in Finals. England team won against South Africa to claim consolation winners trophy. Yudha Gill won Most sixes (India), Sunny Dogra won Best Batsman and Jasmeir and Rajbir won best bowler awards. Few teams were dearly missed for this tournament (especially Sri Lanka and Pakistan) this year Due to BCMCL season still going and some of the teams playing double headers in month of September to finish season. In absent of senior players, lots of junior players shine and kept the entertainment going. Thank you Cricket BC, Amjad Bajwa, Harjit Sandhu, Damanvir Sandhu, Inamul Desai, Nidhan Rekhia, Trideep, and Umer Azam for assisting with this event to make it successful.

Robots will become

smarter than humans by 2029

T

he ‘singularity’ event that scientists talk about in artificial intelligence (AI) -- when robots would outsmart human beings in reasoning -- has just been moved up, according to a top scientist at HP Inc. The progress in AI and machine learning has been so rapid that scientists have upped the estimate for the ‘singularity’ to happen in 2029 from 2040, shaving off 11 years of development time, says Shane Wall, Chief Technology Officer at HP, who also heads the HP Labs which is at the centre of innovation within the company. Wall, who was speaking at the HP Reinvent Partner Forum here, said there may be some who watch with fear for that event to happen but taken adequate precautions, this change would bring in much good for everyone -- be it in manufacturing, health, innovation or elsewhere. He said AI handles huge amount of data and can discern patterns to take decisions. “Machine learning uses AI and big data to learn and it can find things that no humans can see,” Wall noted. According to him, already there are massive data farms which are crunching big numbers and there are research labs and companies where machines are taught how to use data to managing things around us. Wall, who joined HP over a decade ago, drives the company’s technology vision and its strategy and helms the innovation community within. According to him, machines have become smart enough to predict failures within a system and 3D manufacturing is a massive revolution in the making. “Already, 3D printing is handling intricate products and in the future this will bring about a disruptive change,” Wall said. Much of the manufacturing at present is done by transporting the raw materials, parts and de-

signing to various places in the world. “When machines are able to print or manufacture whole systems, this transportation would be limited. Machines are today making their own parts and in tomorrow’s world, this would become much more refined,” the HP executive noted. In this context, he said, it was interesting to see what had happened to photography in the last 30 years. Pictures were taken on films and then sent for processing and you would get the results after a while. “Today, you cannot find film anywhere. Not in Africa. Not in India. Something similar would happen to the $12 trillion manufacturing worldwide,” Wall added. The rapid changes in AI will further accelerate,

but everyone had to exercise caution on cyber security against malicious operators. In this context, he pointed to the cyber-attack on Equifax, the credit reporting agency in the US which had compromised sensitive information of over 140 million people. “I have been affected by the Equifax hacking and almost half the people in this hall have been,” Wall said, adding that robust systems would have to be developed to protect data. Despite the threats, the potential for AI was so great that it would have profound impact on all sections of the society. Wall gave the example of DNA editing being done through AI which will bring about revolutionary changes in tackling diseases. “Technology can be used for all sorts of things good and bad,” he said, “but one had to focus on security and how to develop a new model of safety.” The blockchain technology, used in cyber money like bitcoins, was bringing changes which would have an impact on the political scenarios of countries. “This money is not being controlled by any person or government. Blockchain technology basically ensures the ownership of money in the cyber world which cannot be changed or attacked,” the HP CTO stressed. At the same time, Wall said, quantum computing would make it possible to take the work which takes years to do in computers and reduce it to minutes. “This would be a fundamental challenge to cryptography and blockchain technologies,” he said. In the future, the ‘battle of bytes’ would be tackled with cyber resilience. That would include making it possible to protect, detect and recover systems from malicious attacks, Wall sa By Hardev Sanotra id.

Sleepless in Sin City:

Fun, frolic and I

gaming

n the heart of the Nevada desert lies a city with over a million lights, burning bright in the night like a shining diamond against an otherwise dark background. It is sin city -- one that never sleeps.

Ocean’s Eleven.

Many of the hotels are made on themes to attract punters and tourists. The large-sized Eiffel Tower catches your eye at Paris Las Vegas and an entire stretch designed like Venice entices you with a gondola ride at the Venetian. The Pyramids and Sphinx at the Luxor remind you of a different era and country. Much thought -- and money -- has gone into these attractions to just say, come hither.

Propitiating a hedonistic God, Las Vegas has just one goal -- to let you have fun, whatever may be your idea of fun. Music, dance, drama, fashion and sex are offered round the clock to those who seek it. And, of course, there’s gambling -- its lifeblood and raison d’etre. According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, around 43 million people visited the place in 2016, bringing in some $6.3 billion dollars of revenue for just the casinos on the Strip, which houses most of the well-known gambling joints. Compare this with another of the world’s top tourist destinations, London, which attracted around 20 million tourists last year. Surrounded by mountain ranges on all sides, the area was named Las Vegas, which in Spanish means “the meadows”. The iconic “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign, was created in 1959 by Betty Willis, who never copyrighted it. Las Vegas thrives on glitter and glam. There are always top-level musicals or sport shows happening here. Whether it’s Celine Dion or Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears or Ricky Martin, or top names in boxing, they have all been there and done that. And these are really the sideshows. The main activity, of course, is inside the casinos -- on the green felt tables where you can bet from $1 or less to a thousand dollars (or a million if that’s your style) in the hope of making more. Of course, mathematically speaking, many would

The city also attracts hundreds of conventions and celebrations, since it has the ability to cater to tens of thousands of officials from multinationals. Every year, hundreds of such gathering are held here, with the gambling tables and tourist places adding a touch of fun to serious business. have to lose for some to win, even as casinos keep on raking in the moolah. Many amateurs hang around the slot machines, hoping to hit the jackpots which may range from a lowly $100 to $12 million dollars in mega prize machines, often shared by several casinos. Most professionals, though, are seen at the tables -- Black Jack, Poker, Baccarat, Roulette, Craps and others games. The gambling arena in some of the casinos reminds one of James Bond movies. Well-dressed men and women with a glass of liquor in hand completely engrossed in trying to beat the odds. The casino capital of the world makes people feel at ease. Dancing fountains, colourful, well-lit streets, live songs and music at every corner of the Strip vie to make it a dream destination -- an enchanting la la land which seeks to cast

its spell on every visitor. If there are sinners here, so are the redeemers. Dozens of Christian Firsters carry around signs trying to dissuade the punters from the life they have chosen. Jesus Christ will punish you, is a theme which emanates from the loudspeakers they carry. The attraction of the city is such that many visitors come here again and again. “Me and my husband have been coming here for the last 25 years. We have seen Frank Sinatra perform in this city,” septuagenarian Suzanne from Boston said striking up a conversation. She still loves to roam around the city and enjoys standing by the dancing fountains, shooting video for the times when she’s not here. The gigantic Bellagio Hotel and Casino is one of the more attractive places on the strip, made famous by George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts through their iconic roles in the Hollywood movie

If you get tired of the gaming tables or machines, you can always imbibe other attractions in the city -- wax museum of Madame Tussaud’s at the Venetian with statues of famous and the notorious, the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay or the High Roller -- a giant ferris wheel at The LinQ. For those who want an extra high, not necessarily from the flowing liquor, there’s the Stratosphere -- the tallest freestanding observation tower in the United States. If you don’t end up spending all your money in casinos, you can also visit the premium outlets at either end of the Strip. The shopping centres offer discounts, yet prices can be steep. But if you love branded stuff, finding many brands in one place can be tempting. Las Vegas may be fun, but its expensive fun. Go there with your wallet full and with money you can lose. Or just visit the Grand Canyon -- four hours away -- and avoid the epicurean and libertine centre of the world. By Aparajita Gupta
