My first impression was, “He has a natural smile in his talk; and this is Gods, gift he is bestowed upon.” And one does not need a second chance to create the first impression. As I walked the talk, this Senior most executive at this new dealership, with an aura of comport around him, informed that he is working since he was a tween [ 14 years]. His first job was a Lot Associate in Saskatchewan, a province where he took the first breath of his life. Being a son of an Automotive Technician, he decided to pursue a career in Automotive. When I asked him why decided in favor

For 13 years- during the prime of his youth – he worked with constancy to purpose and honesty of commitment. Management amply rewarded the core professionalism and a leading loyal leader in him as he escalated the rung after rung to be Western Canada Sales Manager in a record period. It will not be out of place to mention that Open Road Auto group is the largest Auto Group in BC with 22 franchises under their belt and bedecked with a loyal team of over 1300 employees. This twenty-years young group has a turn over of circa millions. This humongous group sells over 18 brands in a row in different cities and places.” When I asked him, how he feels with an eventful career of 18 years in his chosen field, he stated,” I feel good and lucky to be a part of this best Auto Group where I can pursue my passion and I love challenges.” Since he is from Saskatchewan, I asked him how he feels to be in this tranquil area of BC? I saw him losing half connection with me and rummaging through the last 5 years he spent here and then muttered, “I love to be here and I will never leave this area blessed with mountains, ocean, nature bedecked roads and beautiful multi cultured inhabitants.” On clients front he stated, “To dole out Best Customer Service to our customers is our USP and 80% are our repeat customers; and approx. 50% of our clientele is from Indian descent- hard working community which is resourceful and respectful and love to pursue their passion for motors.” On hobbies front he loves, Mountain

On family front, he loves to travel with his spouse Ambelea and two kids- Master Holden [8 yrs.] and Barret [ 4 Yrs.] When I asked him where he sees himself in the next 10 years, he opined.” The future of Auto Industry will be very different and exciting as well as challenging as years unfold in succession. MEDICAL TEST- A VITAL COMPONENT OF LIFE INSURANCE in getting accurate medical results.

hours before the exam.

Sandeep Ahuja

P

urchasing a life insurance policy can prove to be one of the wisest steps in securing your family’s future. If you have made this decision, it’s commendable. While an insurance agent will provide you with various insurance plan options as per your financial needs and capabilities; depending on the insurance plan (for high coverage), the insurance company may require you to undergo a medical test to provide evidence of your insurability.

Meaning A medical test is a physical exam in which a medical professional (licensed nurse) asks the proposed insured questions about his/her medical history and records his blood pressure, pulse, height and weight. Further, depending on insurer’s guidelines for your age, the nurse may also collect your blood and EKG and/or X-ray and, if required, a personal interview to collect information about your medical history. The medical test may be conducted in your home, your workplace or in insurance office as per your convenience and suitability. You simply have to inform in advance so that arrangements can be made accordingly. It may take on an average between 30 to 45 minutes.

Ways to achieve accurate results during Medical Test

While you earnestly want to clear the medical test without any hassle, by keeping these simple points in mind, you will be able to obtain accurate results from the tests covered in this exam: 1. Take a picture ID to the examination- It will facilitate the examiner in confirming your identity. 2. Do not eat or drink any beverage 4-8 hours prior to the exam- Certain lab tests require that you should not have taken any eatable/liquid. So do not take any eatables/beverage 4-8

3. Limit the intake of salt and foods containing high levels of cholesterol for 24 hours prior to the exam- Again, for the accuracy of test results, 24 hours before the scheduled exam, limit the intake of salt and foods rich in cholesterol.

By keeping these simple things in mind, you will be able to gain accurate results from the medical test that is quite crucial for attaining approval of your insurance policy and maintaining its viability. As an independent insurance advisor working through Punjab Insurance Agency, I deal with different insurance companies offering plans for different types of insurance. I can explain to you in detail, the insurance plan options and coverage that are suitable for your needs and resources. 4. Avoid doing strenuous exercise 12 hours prior to the examination- Do not perform any exercise involving high level of physical/muscular strain. 5. Avoid taking alcoholic beverages for at least 12 hours prior to the exam- Consumption of alcoholic beverages may again affect the accuracy of lab test results. So, avoid them.

6. Limit the use of caffeine and nicotine 2 hours before the examination- Limit the intake of drinks containing caffeine and nicotine. 7. Drink a glass of water one hour prior to the examination- While the intake of eatables and beverages may affect the accuracy of results, taking a glass of water can enhance the accuracy of results. 8. Inform the examiner of any history of problems associated with providing a blood sample- Inform the examiner of any medical problems that you face while providing a blood sample such as fainting. 9. Disclose the names of current medications including naturopathic medicines, or vitaminsIf you are taking any medications, be prepared to disclose the same during the exam. 10. Have handy a list of the names, addresses and phone numbers of any doctors that you have visited during the past five years- Also, be prepared to disclose the contact information of any physicians that you may have visited during this period. 11. Have full details of any existing medical conditions, including the dates, durations, results and treatments- These may be asked during the exam. 12. ctor Harshvardhan Kapoor, who was last seen in Bhavesh Joshi Superhero has said that he will start shooting for the biopic of Olympic Gold medallist Abhinav Bindra in January next year. Harshvardhan Kapoor was interacting with media at the launch of Reebok’s fall-winter collection 2018 along with Esha Gupta on Friday in Mumbai. Talking about his preparation to play Abhinav Bindra onscreen, Harshvardhan said, “From September 15, I will start preparing for my role in the film and then, we will start shooting of the film in January. Basically, Abhinav won gold at the Olympics in 10-meter air rifle event so, we have set up a shooting range and I will be shooting about five months every day with the rifle.” He will be spending a lot of time with Abhinav and his father. “My father (Anil Kapoor) will also spend a lot of time with them because he plays my father in the

film so, like Mirzya and Bhavesh Joshi Superhero, it will be another journey,” he said. The actor also said that films like Mirzya, Bhavesh Joshi Superhero and Bindra biopic are very passionate projects. “I like doing movies like these. These all are passion projects so, it leads to tremendous growth and as an actor,” he said. “I believe in longevity in films, I don’t think the audience is going to remember what was the first three-day collection of a certain film. I think cinema and art have to live on and I think Bindra will be the same,” said the actor. When asked if he is going to gain weight to play Abhinav Bindra onscreen, he said, “No.. Bindra film basically tracks his (Abhinav Bindra) journey from him being a 15-year-old to 35-year-old, so basically, I am playing him through two decades so, that will be reverse ageing for me.” Courtesy: IANS

Taapsee Pannu On Working With Both Senior And Junior Bachchan

T

aapsee Pannu has been carving her niche in Bollywood for the past 5 years. After back to back phenomenal performances in Pink and Naam Shabana, the Ghazi Attack actress isn’t afraid of experimenting with her roles and has gone on to star in a complete comedy like Judwaa 2. This year, the talented actress will be seen in three drastically different films. Soorma, the Sandeep Singh biopic, starring Diljit Dosanjh, saw Taapsee playing the role of a professional hockey player, whereas in Mulk she played a lawyer alongside Rishi Kapoor. The Baby actress is now gearing for the release of her next, Anurag Kashyap’s romantic drama, Manmarziyaan, which will see her opposite Abhishek Bachchan and Vicky Kaushal, playing the quintessential Punjabi kudi. This will be the first time Taapsee is acting with Junior Bachchan, who has worked on Pink with Senior Bachchan and will soon be seen sharing screen space with him yet again in Sujoy Ghosh’s Badla. We can’t help but wonder how different (or similar?) it is to act with two such dynamic men and thankfully, Taapsee is here to clear the air. Cortsey: MID DAY

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas Celebrate at Their Engagement Party

A S

inger-actress Jennifer Lopez, who is returning to the romantic comedy genre with the upcoming movie Second Act, says sometimes during a tough life one needs a fun and quirky escape. Lopez spoke about it during an appearance on The Tonight Show, in a chat with host Jimmy Fallon, reports hollywoodreporter.com. “You need that funny, quirky look at life. That romantic look at life. I think things are tough sometimes and we need that escape,” said the star of rom-coms such as Maid in Manhattan, The Wedding Planner, Monster-in-Law and Shall We Dance?.

She hasn’t appeared in a traditional take on the genre since The Back-up Plan in 2010. Second Act follows a 40-something retail worker (Lopez) who reinvents her life when a friend makes her a fake resume that lands her a job at a prestigious Madison Avenue firm. Lopez said that she personally requested that her co-star on “Second Act” be Milo Ventigmilia, whose most recent claim to fame is playing Jack Pearson on “This Is Us”. “There was only one person I ever saw and it was Milo ... And watching him play a dad I was like, ‘Ugh, oh my God,’” Lopez said.

fter confirming their engagement on Saturday, Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra celebrated their upcoming nuptials with an engagement party. Chopra wore a light pink dress for the occasion and accessorized her look with a sparkly necklace. Jonas wore a patterned shirt and dark pants. The couple seemed to have a blast celebrating with loved ones. The former Jonas Brothers band member showed a video of the Quantico actress dancing the night away on Instagram and captioned the clip “celebration time.” The parents of the future bride and groom were also there to celebrate the major milestone. Jonas posted a picture of himself and Chopra kissing his parents on the cheek. The singer’s mother, Denise Jonas, also shared a few pictures of her enjoying the night with Priyanka’s mother, Madhu Chopra. Actress Alia Bhatt was in attendance, as well. She posted a picture of her hanging out with the happy couple on Instagram and captioned it, “ALL HEART. Congratulations you guys.” It certainly has been an eventful time for the couple. She played Black Widow in this year’s hit Marvel movie Avengers: Infinity War and will return to the role in the 2019 installment from Walt Disney Co’s Marvel Studios. Avengers: Infinity War has become one of the highest grossing films of all times. The MCU superhero film had Scarlett aka Black Widow teaming up with Captain America, Black Panther, Hulk, Winter Soldier, Thor, Vision, Scarlet Witch and the Guardians of the Galaxy, to fight the mighty Thanos and stop him from acquiring all the six infinity stones. Black Widow is one of the few superheroes who managed to survive

thanks mainly to her upfront pay for Maleficent 2. Jennifer Aniston came in third with USD 19.5 million, making the bulk of her profits from Emirates airlines, Smartwater, and Aveeno promotions, Forbes reports. Jennifer Lawrence, 28, was fourth on the list with continued earnings from her role in the “X-Men” series and an endorsement contract with fashion brand Christian Dior. Her USD 18 million income was USD 6 million less than the prior year. Reese Witherspoon, 42, is at number five with USD 16.5 million. The rest of the top 10 were Mila Kunis, Cate Blanchett, Melissa McCarthy and Gal Gadot. The combined earnings of the top 10 women this year is USD 186 million. Are you tired most of the time? You know, I know, we are…… Part 2 and toxicity from heavy metals etc.

Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Health Coach of University of Victoria

Dehydration Dehydration occurs when there is an excessive loss of body fluids, especially of water and electrolytes — or not enough water taken during the day. When you start to feel thirsty, you body is already dehydrated. Causes of Dehydration: Excessive exercise without water/fluids intake, drinking soda or other beverages instead, being outside in the hot sun for an hour or more, particularly during peak hours. Also, certain medical conditions / sickness viz vomiting, diarrhea, sweating, diabetes , menstrual cycle, IBS and certain prescription medications. The most common cause of dehydration is simply not drinking enough water or substituting water intake with only sugar- added -soda or juice. This is a critical mistake as not only does that spike your blood sugar, but also your cells cannot get enough water to function properly! The major electrolytes in the body — sodium, potassium, chloride and bicarbonate — are ion compounds that literally help our body to have energy via the force of electricity that keeps your organs and cells functioning. Some parts of the body that are more “electrically wired” and require a high number of electrolytes and water include the brain, heart, nervous system and muscles. Dehydration affects the actual viscosity (thickness) of your blood and the amount that your heart must beat every minute, as it tries to transport oxygen to all your cells. When you’re dehydrated, your heart sends oxygen and nutrients to your brain, muscles and organs at a slower pace; as a consequence, you begin to feel fatigued/ exhausted, lethargic and moody. Natural Remedies for and Prevention of Dehydration: As everyone knows drink more water throughout the day, increase your intake of vegetables and fruits, and make sure you’re getting plenty of electrolytes in the form of whole foods. When it comes to fruits and vegetables, some of the best options to obtain electrolytes and to stay hydrated include: Watermelon, Cantaloupe, Cucumber, Coconut water, Celery, Kiwi, Bell peppers, Citrus fruit, Carrots and Pineapple. People with Diabetes should eat watermelon and pine apple in moderation as these two fruits have high Glycemic Index [GI].

“Do not run after riches; run after good health, a decent life style and age gracefully on the carousel of time, so as to continuously vouch for self- actualization which is the ultimate goal of a human life. To calculate the amount of water you need to drink daily to avoid dehydration, take your weight in pounds and divide that number by 2. In other words, if you’re a woman who weighs 160 pounds, you need to drink roughly 80 ounces per day, or roughly ten 8-ounce glasses of water to stay fully hydrated. But this is only the amount of water if you do not exercise or do anything vigorous. If you work out or if you are active, then you ideally need to drink at least an extra eight ounces for every 30 minutes of exercise. Emotional Stress: Research has confirmed in succession that tiredness can be psychological in patches. Beyond an iota of doubt an emotional stress can take a huge toll on your energy levels, especially when distress escalates to the point of an anxiety disorder or a sleep-related problem. In any given year, 1 in 5 Canadians experiences a mental illness or addiction problem. By the time Canadians reach 40 years of age, 1 in 2 have—or have had—a

mental illness. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (AADA), anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting more than 40 million adults in the U.S. aged 18 years and older (which is 18 percent of the U.S. population). Causes of Emotional Stress: Stress and anxiety can cause mental or emotional symptoms in addition to physical ones. These can include: feelings of impending doom. panic or nervousness, especially in social settings. Anxiety disorders are caused by a complex set of risk factors including: Genetics, diet, lifestyle and brain chemistry. Unfortunately, It is very common for those with anxiety to also have a form of depression, and vice versa — therefore, energy levels can suffer even more. Natural Remedies for Emotional Stress: To combat emotional stress, you’ll want to focus on adjusting your diet, 7-hour sleep and exercise. Need to avoid stimulants [ e.g. caffeine], including those found in many tea, coffee, soft drinks and processed foods. Also, the use of essential oils, adaptogen herbs, and taking supplements like magnesium and vitamin B Complex that support your ability to cope with stress successfully. Depression: Depression is one of the most common mental disorders and energy killer. Depression is believed to be caused by successive high stress, alcohol, hormonal imbalances, unresolved emotional problems, neurotransmitter imbalances, nutrition deficiencies, Vitamin D3 deficiency

To control tiredness, keep your body hydrated all the time. In case you are a Junk food Junkie you will be peeing more frequently that tend to make the body dehydrated and lose electrolytes in patches. Mindfully, medical experts are telling us to drink half a glass of water after every visit to the loo, so as to negate the chances of dehydration, in case of any eventuality. Water, coconut water and homemade juices with all pulp in the juice and with no table sugar added are the only best choices. Energy drinks are diabolical to good health as they are now banned, though lately, up to an age of 16 in England as an ocular proof. Better late than never.”

Natural Remedies for Depression: Fortunately, changes in diet can really help ease depression. This is because foods can significantly affect our mood via the actions of neurotransmitters in our brain. It is prudent to follow an antidepression diet that boost the ability to produce “feel-good hormones. There are four primary chemicals in the brain that make us feel good/effect our happiness viz dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins. By sensible food planning and exercise one can activate these chemicals and thereby increase increase Vitamin H- I mean happiness. So, the smart thing is to drastically reduced your intake of processed and refined foods, fast/junk foods, sugar-heavy/ sugar added foods, large amounts of simple carbohydrates, and caffeine and alcohol [ in case it is more than 2 drinks]. Red wine in moderation, for those into the drinking, is a better choice unequivocally. We need to add energy-boosting foods viz proteins, vegetables, healthy fats like omega-3 fatty acids and coconut base foods, and other whole foods that make up a curative diet. We do not need omega 6 and omega 9 as our liver makes it daily as per our body requirement. Supplementation of Omega 6 in excess can lead to Hypertension. Do not forget to incorporate exercise, relaxation techniques and Epsom salt [lavender flavor- as it relaxes our nervous system] bath. The smart thing is to do it regularly. Use of Essential oils is an allnatural and cost-effective way to boost up mood. Essential oils like lavender, eucalyptus, rose, bergamot and roman chamomile which have been proven to help elevate mood for many people suffering from depression and anxiety. Leaky Gut Syndrome Leaky gut syndrome is a condition in which digestive tract becomes damaged as gut lining becomes impaired Small particles that normally can’t pass through a gut wall now start seeping through bloodstream. When someone has leaky gut syndrome, some of the things that can pass through the gut lining include proteins like gluten, bad bacteria and undigested foods particles to quote a few. Symptoms of leaky gut syndrome include: feeling tired most of the time, cramps, bloating or diarrhea and skin irritations. Plus, muscle and joint pain, weight gain and changes in mood happens. Leaky Gut Syndrome Causes: The number one reason is very frequent use of antibiotics, eating foods high in phytates and lectins — such as glutenous grains, nuts, seeds (not soaked or sprouted) GMO foods processed foods, added refined sugars, high fructose corn syrup, thyroid disease and autoimmune conditions Cont. in next edition.

4 Beauty Hacks For The Best Manicure At Home

M

any believe that the best set of nails come at a hefty price. That isn’t necessarily true. Sure gel polish and acrylics do look fantastic but it really is possible to have a stunning manicure at a quarter of the cost right at home. If your at-home manicures up until this point have only been goopy and messy, we’re about to change that. Find out how you can get the best manicure of your life for a fraction of the cost with these 5 hacks. 1. Start Right Before you even begin painting your nails, make sure they are well prepared for it. Soak a cotton pad in nail polish remover, leave on each nail for 10 - 15 seconds, then remove the old polish, which will come out much easier. If it has stained your nails, apply white toothpaste to your nails, scrub gently and wash off after a few minutes for a clean finish. 2. Base First Don’t ever skip a coat of base polish. It may seem like an unnecessary step to breeze through when you’re short on time but take the effort and paint a thin

layer of base nail polish. Base acts like a canvas for the nail which helps the final colour appear more vibrant, adhere to the surface of the nail and prevent chipping. 3. Cleanup Is Key Don’t you just hate those messy bits of nail polish that get stuck to your cuticle when painting? Not only do they look terribly untidy, they are a dead giveaway of a subpar manicure. After you apply a base, use a cotton bud to neatly apply Vaseline at the sides of the nail over the skin with none on the nail itself. Paint your nails as usual and wipe off the Vaseline for a neat finish. 4. Card Tricks Can never seem to get the French manicure right on your own? A simple business card will do the trick. Position any old paper business card horizontally across the nail, just below the tip according to the space on the nail for the desired white strip. Tape it down on either side, keep your nail still and paint the tip in white. All done, now wasn’t that simple? Courtesy: SWIRLSTER

ctor Amy Adams has said that she needs to know the background of a character before she can embody it on screen. According to Femalefirst, the “Arrival” star said that it adds to her performance if she can give her character a good back story. “For each character, I build a psychological back story from the age of around three - I’ll imagine their whole life leading up to the present day,” Adams said. Adams most recently starred in HBO series “Sharp Objects” where she played Camille Preaker, an emotionally troubled reporter who returns to her hometown to cover the murders of two young girls. The 43-year-old actor said she is very grateful to her family for helping her during the making of show which often required her to visit “uncomfortable” places. “You have to go and live in a place that’s rather uncomfortable, but I am lucky that I have great friends and family and they pull you right out at the end of the day. It was darker and deeper than I first thought though,” Adams said.

Love Marriage vs Arranged Marriage:

Which is Better?

When it comes to marriage, everyone wants to find their perfect match and soulmate. In love marriages, people choose their own partners, while in arranged marriages, families choose their partners for them. Though, we all know that a great marriage isn’t about finding the perfect match, it is about loving each other, despite the differences.

Ritika Tiwari Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist

T

he love marriage vs arranged marriage debate has been going on for decades, especially in Indian families. But which one is a better choice? Let’s find out:

Finding prospects

Arranged marriages When it comes to finding prospects, arranged marriages are definitely better since your parents and extended family do all the necessary hard work and all you have to do is meet the matches. With your family vetting all the prospects, you are also assured of their background. For people who are reserved or have been incredibly busy with their work to meet anyone, this is a God sent approach, but it also has its own disadvantages. You have no control over what criteria your family might be applying to select the potential matches. In most traditional families, parents often think about more superficial parameters like religion, caste, income, and skin colour. That may be important to some, it doesn’t necessarily guarantee that you will meet someone who will make you happy Love marriages When it comes to love marriages, you have to wait for destiny to find your soulmate. Though it can often be frustrating to date people and realise that they might not be the right person, at least you have the freedom to pick and choose your own partner. At the same time, it can be

22

september 2018

difficult to find someone suitable enough to date amidst your busy schedules. You also have to filter through people who are looking for the same thing as you. A large part of people who actively date are not necessarily looking to get married any time soon. Overall, arranged marriages are good when you know your family understands your own personality and expectations from your future partner. If they don’t, love marriages are more suitable.

2- Shortlisting the perspectives Arranged marriages Shortlisting the prospective matches to find that special someone in an arranged marriage process can be rather complicated and tedious. The biggest challenge in this process is that you have to shortlist matches after just meeting them once or twice. Though, since you are essentially meeting strangers, it becomes easier to keep the emotions aside and focus on objective facts during the shortlisting process. But at the same time, just because a person is a good match for you on paper, doesn’t mean you will have good

chemistry with them. It takes more than a just a few meetings to really understand a person. Love marriages With love marriages, you have several opportunities, often years, to interact with someone before you even think about getting married. With the time you spend together, you are able to understand each other’s interests and behaviors. You are also able to discuss your future plans to make sure you are both on the same page. Though with love marriages, when your heart has already decided, it can be difficult to be objective. When you are really into someone, you may not be able to

see the differences and signs of the relationship going sour in the future. These differences can often become apparent after marriage. In this case, while the arranged marriage process can allow you to be more objective, you don’t get enough chances to meet and interact with your prospective matches to really understand if they are a good fit for you. Love marriages, on the other hand, offer plenty of opportunities, which is why they win this round as well. At the end of the day, whether it’s a love marriage or an arranged one, what matters is that you are happy with your partner.

Sri Yoga Hanuman Cultural Society - Surrey BC deserves larger premises

N. Bala B.Engg, MBA, CAIIB Techno-Banker / Writer / Blogger

Sri Yoga Hanuman Cultural Society is a charitable organization engaged in various activities for the betterment of people and the society. It also manages Sri Yoga Hanuman Temple, an immensely popular holy place of worship. Sri Yoga Hanuman Temple is situated at 13415 Comber Way Surrey BC and it is growing in its popularity, by leaps and bounds. With every day passing, the footfalls in this temple are on the rise. And that is because of many reasons. Among them, few are listed here below: • This temple has more than 24 deities under one roof! • The main deity Lord Hanuman in a unique sitting (yogic) posture is one of the largest statues, measuring 2 stories high, weighing 20 tons in weight and made out of one single black granite stone!

26

september 2018

• The quality of renditions of hymns and discourses by the Head Priest Sri Ram Shakti Bhattar are absolutely par excellent. The temple enjoys five-star reviews by the visitors. • The serene and divine ambiance of the temple is exceptional. • The prayer ceremony proceedings in the temple are as per procedures. • This temple attracts people from all walks of life, including India, Canada, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, USA and Fiji come to worship. • This temple offers, at the end of the prayers, a sumptuous meal prepared in-house by the Head Priest and his family members!

The temple is managed by Sri Yoga Hanuman Cultural Society, which has multi-faceted activities for the betterment of the people and the society. Presently, the temple is operating from a small place and space is completely inadequate, thanks to the burgeoning of worshippers! The place becomes too much crammed and tight during the praying sessions and many people do not even get into the temple. They stand outside. This includes ladies, seniors, and children. Sri Yoga Hanuman Cultural Society needs larger premises for

the temple and its other activities, urgently. The Society is currently in hot pursuit of a piece of a spacious land that can come from wealthy donors, well-wishers, federal or provincial governments either for free or on a very low long -term lease! It is an appeal through this article that this Society must be supported for its wonderful presence and immensely serving the community! Once the land is available, the Society can build and relocate the temple. It is a humble plea through this article that the contents of this article are propagated in the right earnest by every one who reads so that the Society gets much-needed land very soon from any source. Sri Yoga Hanuman Society is a charitable organization recognized by the Government of Canada and any donation will be exempt from tax! Any donors? Please come forward. Kindly contact either Sri Ram Shakti Bhattar – Founder-Head Priest, Sri Yoga Hanuman Cultural Society-Sri Yoga Hanuman Temple phone: 604-780-9196/778-5931898 email: yogahanumantemple@ gmail.com or N. How to Build Trust in

Friendships

Trust is one of the most important foundational blocks of friendship. It allows us to open up to our friends and safely share our lives with them. At the same time, betrayal of trust can feel devastating in a friendship, or any relationship for that matter. When you betray a friend’s confidence by sharing something they told you in confidence, it can put a dent in your relationship with them.

Ritika Tiwari Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist

T

hat is why, it’s important to be clear with your friends about what trust means to you, so that you are both on the same page. There are several ways to build and demonstrate trust in friendships, including:

1- Be more dependable

There are many friends who can show up to a party or to get a drink with you, but true friends are the ones who always return calls and messages, and actually show up when things get rough. Instead of just being available to your friends on your own convenience, go out of your way to show them that you actually care for them and talk to them when they are going through a tough time.

2- Be kind

Friends can make mistakes, give them some room for error and be kinder. If they change or cancel plans, call them up or text them to make sure that everything is alright at their end, instead of assuming

that they are just ignoring you. If they say something which hurts you, be honest with them about it and let them know exactly why you felt hurt.

3- Be completely present

When your friend is talking to you about something important, give them your full attention by putting your phone down and try not to interrupt them. If there is an important social media update, it is still going to be there after your conversation with your friend is over. Also, resist from giving unnecessary advice unless you can really help your friend.

4- Be considerate

While it’s important to bring your walls down around your friends, sharing too much intimate

information about your life in the early phases of your friendship can be rather overwhelming, for both you and your friend. Take one step at a time and move slowly instead of rushing into a new friendship.

5- Have integrity

Show your friends that you are the type of person who can be trusted with private and intimate information. True friends never gossip behind each other’s backs. Even if it’s a small detail that your friend shared with you, do not discuss it with others unless you know your friend is alright with it. It’s best to talk to your friends about this and be clear about boundaries. You should know what is to be shared and what shouldn’t be shared in order to strengthen and maintain your friendship.

6- Be interdependent

30

september 2018

Trusting friends are able to ask each for help even when they are vulnerable, desperate, or scared. Open yourself up more to your friends, it will also help them to open themselves up to you as well and reach out to you when they are facing a problem.

7- Be reciprocative

Friendships can often go sour if one person is always on the receiving end of things. You need to be more reciprocative in friendships and respect each other mutually. For instance, if a friend takes a day off to spend time with you and invite you to their house, you should do the same for them as well. By following all these simple tips, you will be able to build trust in friendships and have friends who stay by your side through the thick and thin.

A Girl in a Whirl Contd. from previous issue (Part 24) “Wait”, saying this I began searching Sam’s company ad in that. I was rummaging through the directory but I couldn’t get it. “Did you get it?”, the despatcher asked. “Just wait”, I pleaded. I was afraid that the dispatcher might disconnect my phone if I delayed telling her the address. “Where are you now?” “In my washroom” I replied. “And your husband?” “Outside washroom. I door locked”, I explained her in my poor English. Meanwhile I found the ad that probably had our home address. I told her that. Sam was continuously banging on the door. Just then I heard hooters of police cars. I heard a knock at our main door. Sam’s banging on the door stopped. In a while, I heard an English lady’s voice outside my washroom. “Police here, Sonia! Open the door.”, I heard a knock at my washroom. That was unbelievable that I was talking to the dispatcher and police was there outside my washroom. “Don’t worry, Sonia. Police are at your washroom door. You can open the door now. Tell them your problems.”, I heard from the dispatcher on

the other side of my phone. Still a bit scared, I opened the door. Police had taken all other family members downstairs. There were an English policeman and a Punjabi policewoman only. She asked me the whole story. I cried and told her all the cruelties Sam and his mom had inflicted on me. Finally she asked me if I was feeling any danger to my life in that house. I said ‘yes’. The police asked me to take all my documents and my other stuff, and accompany them. The policewoman told me that they were taking me to a shelter where I’d have no danger. I’d be fully safe. When I came out of the house, police had handcuffed Sam and his mom. They were taking them to one of their cars. Police took me in another car. I was unable to understand what my fate would be. The policewoman took me to a house and gave me a room. She asked me if I wanted to tell police anything or ask anything else. I told her that I was pregnant. I also asked her to let me talk to my parents in Ludhiana, India. She first talked to the police control room. Then she called my parents on her cellphone. Crying bitterly, I told my mom the whole story. Mom was dumbfounded. Learning my tale, my mom burst out crying. I told my tales for about ten minutes. The policewoman asked me to finish my talk.

“I’ll call you again tomorrow, mom. Don’t worry now.”, I finished the talk and disconnected the phone. I returned the policewoman her phone. She asked me to have a comfortable sleep. She told me that she’d come the next morning and let me know what I need to do further. She also assured me that I didn’t need to worry anymore. I was feeling freed from one prison. But I was unable to see anything for me in future. I could sleep only at about 3 A.M. Somebody knocked at my door next morning around 10 A.M. It was the same policewoman standing outside my door. She asked me to come to the living room. I quickly got fresh and went there in about ten minutes. She told me in Punjabi that several charges have been framed against Sam and my mother-in-law. They had no idea where I was. A counselor was supposed to come to see me after some time. She asked me if I had any question. I told her that I wanted to talk to my parents in India. She noted it down and asked me to have some breakfast from the stuff in the kitchen. She also told me that I was free to prepare anything for my meals. There was lots of food in the kitchen. She warned me not go anywhere alone; my counselor would take me with her if I wanted. And then she left. Contd. in next issue

Everyone wants a change but nobody wants to change …….

Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun)

LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp. A Health Coach of University of Victoria

veryone wants to own the result, nobody wants to own the process. Everybody want progress, but no one- with few exceptions- is ready to be a part of it. Change brings progress. Change is the law of nature. Everyone wants a positive change. For that we need to contribute by adapting to a change. Since we are hard wired on cognitive front, not to risk, so we resist the change. Why we continue to resist a change? Being creatures of die- hard habits, we often have difficulty incorporating even small changes into our daily routines, no matter how beneficial they are for us, because we tend to do the things that make us remain safe and comfortable. No one wants to be in the corridor of uncertainty which a change brings to start with. Sometimes we fully understand the realm of change: and being convinced make reasonable efforts to change, but why -Owhy, is it that we are still so resistant to changing our behavior, even when these changes are healthy or beneficial to us? Let us understand it. Our inertia works against us to achieve a change: Inertia is a tendency to do nothing or to remain unchanged. The logic is our brain is hard wired to avoid risk and change always comes with risk. Inertia any initiative at the headwinds of any change that we make in our lives. It helps to describe why our bodies tend to act against us when we try to begin a new diet or an exercise routine. Our bodies’ complex inertia, or resistance to change, is important for maintaining a state of equilibrium in our bodies. It is known as Homeostasis. Homeostasis helps our bodies to maintain a normal body temperature, metabolism, weight and other quintessential functions that are necessary for our survival. Think about homeostasis as a micromolecular

Change is the only constant factor in life. Those who do not adapt to the changedown the lane of ever moving wheel of time- are not most successful in life.

I think, we reject change due to the fear of failure. As a human being our mind is designed to protect us. It will always try to find a safe way. When we want to change, we fear of its negative consequences since it is never tried before. neurophysiological thermostat, e.g. when a fridge is too cold, the thermostat helps to adjust the temperature by turning off the air conditioner of the unit. But if you pursue a change for 3 weeks in succession then the change gets accepted. For example, if you have started a new low carb diet to lose weight or normalize blood glucose and pursue it continuously for at least 3 weeks, the brain starts accepting the change. There are millions of examples as we people have quit smoking, drinking and drugs. Neurobiology of change: It might also be interesting to note that the steps to making meaningful life changes can further be implicated by areas of the brain that control our habits and conscious decision-making abilities. Our basal ganglia in the ancestral or primitive brain are responsible for “hard wired” habits. This cluster of nerve cell bodies is involved in functions such as automatic

or routine behaviors (e.g., habits) that we are familiar with or that make us feel good. Such behaviors might include nail biting, alcohol, drugs, smoking cigarettes or following the same routine every day [e.g. Food habits] without making changes to it. Habits like exercise is another example. When we repeatedly exercise- say over 3 weeks in succession- or perform a certain behavior in a specific environment or context then it becomes our daily new routine. Any type of change like incorporating a physical activity into our routine after a period of being sedentary[ lazy life style] can go against the neural pathways that have become automatic to us. That is why we tend to fall back on our default or automatic behaviors when we try to implement changes like a new diet or physical activity after a period of inactivity. Having a mental disorder can affect our ability to change behavior People with some mental disorders like Depression, ADHD can have difficulty changing their behaviors, especially as an aspect of the therapeutic process, because finding motivation to exercise and incorporate other positive changes, by these sick people, can be difficult when experiencing a lack of interest in activities, which were at one time enjoyable. Symptoms such as these can make a change to the neuro-psychological state of their inertia damn difficult. Depression involves numerous mechanisms including neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters [ namely Serotonin] send signals through circuits in the brain and are involved in processes such as regulating mood. These neurotransmitters

can also become chronic and resistant to treatment, or in a state of negative inertia. The result is known as treatmentresistant depression, when a person does not respond to medications. Why not others’ take an initiate attitude: The real problem is each individual feel that someone else should initiate for a change as one is busy. Everyone thinks someone will do and this attitude results in no one coming forward. Each person feels that the responsibility to start a revolution is distributed among masses and I’m not as much required or needed to bring something new to the world. That’s why everybody wants change but no one wants to initiate. Change is a mind set: It is easy to talk about change, but it is difficult to make a change. If you lead to make a change, you will be a role model for others. So, keep trying yourself hard.

Change is a very slow process. You cannot expect one overnight. If one pursues it with constancy to purpose and honesty of commitment, then one day the positive change will happen as success likes the company of a prepared mind.

the first step and wait for some crusader to come, give a big lecture, make us realise how powerful we are and then lead the masses to a better change. But we forget that no such superhero exists in reality.

When we are afraid of criticism, we tend to stick with present position rather than changing it. It is quite obvious that we all love to talk about ideals and principles, but when it is time to change our behaviour, we prefer status quo thinking. We always prefer to do it after someone else initiate it. Since every human mind function in the same manner, no one normally dare to initiate it Fear of criticism: Everyone wants a change but they don’t want to be the first one. They think that they will be criticized but the less they know that only great minds are criticized. To bring a change is difficult: To register a change is difficult and wanting a change is quite simple. It is similar to like, we want no one should throw trash in the city but won’t hesitate littering the city. Its easy imposing things on others than imposing on ourselves. We think it is not our responsibility and that we are perfect as a citizen or resident. So, others should change to bring the change. Also, sometimes we are scared to take

Fear of failure I think its fear of failure. As a human being our mind is designed to protect us to be on the safe side. It will always try to find a safe way. When you want to change, you fear of its consequences as it is never done before. Afraid of criticism: Also, if you are afraid of criticism, you tend to stick with present position rather than changing it. It is quite obvious that we all love to talk about ideals, principles. But when its time to change your behaviour, we prefer status quo, by thinking that some one will initiate it. Since every human mind function in the same manner, no one venture to initiate it. Humans vary in their pre-disposition: Humans vary in their pre-dispositions, effects of parenting, schooling, and socializing to cap it all. Wanting a change is comfortable, but their changing it, or themselves, involves honest introspection which is painful. we judge things as good or bad. The things which are bad according to us, we want them to change because we don’t like those things. The main problem is we don’t look within ourselves. We consider ourselves perfect, love what we do, think that we have good qualities & we are doing everything properly. This is the real main cause of the problem. If some crusaders decide to take the bull by horns they did not get support of people and system. If powerful institutions and leader encourage people in a positive way, then the change happens. Change involves coming out of the

comfort zone, which is a very difficult task for many. But Change is not something magical, unless we make a try, change is not going to happen any time soon. Bottomline: When I turn on the radio or watch TV I find that everyone’s talking about what they want to change? And how they want change. People want a better economy, but nobody’s willing to share in the financial burden it’ll take to get us back on the rails of normalcy. It is a persons’ mind set. It is easy to talk about change, but it is difficult to make change. If you succeed to make change, you will be a role model for others. People want better schools, but nobody wants to revisit the system, review the role of parents. People want lower health care costs, but nobody wants to endure the changes to medicine, law and bureaucracy it’ll take to get it. People want lower insurance, but nobody wants to adopt the changes in lifestyle and behavior that’ll facilitate it. People want to be thinner, healthier and happier, but nobody wants to own actions it takes to get there. People want lower gas prices, but nobody wants to effectively control the consumption pattern. Those are people of words and not of deeds. One thing we all should know is “To want a change, we first need to become the change”. We need to create a life worth living by ourselves. We are so engrossed in reading and intellectualizing everything that concerns us that we blindly say yes change is good for us, but since we also feel secure staying in our own comfort zone, we are inclined to not change or resist change! Its only when we challenge our limiting beliefs that we give our informed consent to a change and evolve and grow. Another obstacle to change is when we think it is not our responsibility and that we are perfect as a denizen and

Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones that have been waiting for. The first step toward change is awareness. The second step is acceptance. Third step is Get Set Go. expect others should change to bring the change. Such type of people prefers to be a part of the celebration not a part o the solution. Moreover, sometimes we are scared to take the first step and wait for some superhero to come. World leaders like, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela and Nobel Laureate Saint Mother Teresa are classic examples as they were a part of the solution process till final change saw the light of the day. Changing requires effort and humans in general, being lazy do not wish to apply that effort. Changing oneself is the hardest thing and we come up with thousands of reasons to defy a change. People are busy to make their both end’s meet. so, their first priority is to address the bare necessities of life and as such show a cold shoulder to a change. People who have time, resources and influence they choose not to take initiative and do not come forward to bear the burden. If some crusaders decide to take the bull by the horns, they do not get support of people and system. If powerful institutions and leaders encourage people in a positive way, then the change is bound to happen.

Canada Labour Day Celebrations….

F

or many, Labour Day signals the end of summer. But what evolved into just another long weekend began as a massive working-class demonstration in the streets of Toronto. In a time when workers’ rights are taken for granted and even workers’ benefits have come to be expected, it’s no wonder that the origins of Labour Day are confined to the history books. What evolved into just another summer holiday began as a working-class struggle and massive demonstration of solidarity in the streets of Toronto. Canada was changing rapidly during the second half of the 19th century. Immigration was increasing, cities were getting crowded, and industrialization was drastically altering the country’s economy and workforce. As machines began to replace or automate many work processes, employees found they no longer had special skills to offer employers. Workers could easily be replaced if they complained or dissented and so were often unable to speak out against low wages, long work weeks and deplorable working conditions. This is the context and setting for what is generally considered Canada’s first Labour Day event in 1872. At the time, unions were illegal in Canada, which was still operating under an archaic British law already abolished in England. For over three years the Toronto Printers Union had been lobbying its employers for a shorter work week. Inspired by workers in Hamilton who had begun the movement for a nine-hour work day, the

46

september 2018

Toronto printers threatened to strike if their demands weren’t met. After repeatedly being ignored by their employers, the workers took bold action and on March 25, 1872, they went on strike. Toronto’s publishing industry was paralyzed and the printers soon had the support of other workers. On April 14, a group of 2,000 workers marched through the streets in a show of solidarity. They picked up even more supporters along the way and by the time they reached their destination of Queen’s Park, their parade had 10,000 participants – one tenth of the city’s population. The employers were forced to take notice. Led by George Brown, founder of

the Toronto Globe and notable Liberal, the publishers retaliated. Brown brought in workers from nearby towns to replace the printers. He even took legal action to quell the strike and had the strike leaders charged and arrested for criminal conspiracy. Conservative Prime Minister John A. Macdonald was watching the events unfold and quickly saw the political benefit of siding with the workers. Macdonald spoke out against Brown’s actions at a public demonstration at City Hall, gaining the support of the workers and embarrassing his Liberal rival. Macdonald passed the Trade Union Act, which repealed the outdated British law and decriminalized

unions. The strike leaders were released from jail. The workers still did not obtain their immediate goals of a shorter work week. In fact, many still lost their job. They did, however, discover how to regain the power they lost in the industrialized economy. Their strike proved that workers could gain the attention of their employers, the public, and most importantly, their political leaders if they worked together. The “Nine-Hour Movement,” as it became known, spread to other Canadian cities and a shorter work week became the primary demand of union workers in the years following the Toronto strike. The parade that was held in support of the strikers carried over into an annual celebration of worker’s rights and was adopted in cities throughout Canada. The parades demonstrated solidarity, with different unions identified by the colorful banners they carried. In 1894, under mounting pressure from the working class, Prime Minister Sir John Thompson declared Labour Day a national holiday. Over time, Labour Day strayed from its origins and evolved into a popular celebration enjoyed by the masses. It became viewed as the last celebration of summer, a time for picnics, barbecues and shopping. No matter where you find yourself this Labour Day, take a minute to think about Canada’s labour pioneers. Their actions laid the foundations for future labour movements and helped workers secure the rights and benefits enjoyed today. Courtesy: Canadashistory.ca

Mind Power and Healing Navtej Khela

O

ur subconscious mind has enormous healing powers because it controls all systems of our body. We believe we have control over our well being by taking good diet and required medicines. But, for a perfect healthy living and healing ourselves from diseases the power of our subconscious mind plays a major role. It has been proved that almost all major health challenges are caused by stressful lifestyle of us. Disease is actually a combination of words Dis & ease, which clearly means a state of mind which is not at ease or not relaxed. Various studies on patients show that patients with calm and positive mind-sets get cured quicker than patients with fearful mindsets. Our wellness is first created inside our mind, and that will replicate outside of the body. Many of us might have noticed that half of our illness is healed once we meet our doctor, the rest is healed through the medicines that doctor prescribes. This is the truth that our mind accepts, also the faith we have for the doctor and his treatment helps us recover quickly. Your Physiology = Your State of Mind Let us understand above equation. It means our physiology has a direct correlation with our state of mind. Let us say we are feeling mentally down or low because of some situation, all we need to do is move our body or do something. For example, take a little walk or do some exercise, maybe water plants in your backyard or do any kind of physical activity. You will notice by bringing your body in action, your mood changes quickly, your feelings are not the same, you will definitely feel a good change in your state of mind. Similarly on the other hand let us say you are feeling physically down or have low energy, all you need to do is lift yourself mentally by listening to your favorite song or music, watch a motivating video, read a book that inspires you, or call a supportive friend. This will make you feel a lot better and your body will become active and ready to take some action. This means in above equation if you lift one

Tips for Quicker Healing 1. Write down with your own hand, all the activities you will do after your recovery.

component other component is automatically lifted. Understanding this equation should help us to take care of physiology and state of mind. In order to maintain a healthy lifestyle we need to watch both sides of the equation and keep lifting ourselves by working either side of equation. This will also help to keep you in positive state of mind. It has been proved that people with positive attitudes live healthier and longer lives that people with negative attitudes towards life. So in order to enjoy a healthier life we need to nourish our mind regularly by meditation, exercise, yoga, engaging in hobbies, laugh a lot, play a sport, do volunteering or do what makes you happy. My mother and grandmother enjoy a very healthy living style by taking good care of their minds. At 95 years of her age my grandmother walks faster than my mom. Both of them never miss their early morning meditation hours. About 5 years back my mother got both her knees replaced at the same

time. The doctors were surprised to see how quickly she recovered and started living her normal life. During her recovery days, I kept her motivated every day by keeping calm and not talking much about her pain. I gave her pen and paper to write all the stuff she will do after recovery, and made her visualize those activities. We read numerous examples of cancer survivors who made miraculous recoveries with their internal strength and optimistic attitude. We also read and heard stories about people who controlled their deaths by the power of their minds. On the other hand we also know people who invited untimely deaths by holding thoughts of death in their minds. I read a story of a mom who was praying for the recovery of her son. She said “Hey god please add my years of life to my son’s life, and heal him.” It was said that the son recovered from his fatal surgery but, the next day, that mom passed away. This is an example of programming your subconscious mind the wrong way.

2. Put pictures on your wall, doing all the actives when you enjoyed perfect health. 3. Visualize yourself doing all the activities you would do when you’re in perfect health. 4. Do relaxation or meditation on a daily basis and visualize your perfect body in the alpha state. 5. Avoid watching the news, reading the newspapers, or listening news on the radio. 6. Do not talk about pain or tell stories about your bad health. 7. Engage yourself with activities which make you feel happy, like your hobbies, watch comedy movies. Each one of you has a substantial amount of power within you to heal yourself. You should know how to scientifically use the power within you. If you don’t want to heal any particular disease or problem, you can apply the powers of your subconscious mind to keep your body healthy. Your subconscious mind is a faithful servant, it only follows the pattern of our thoughts and images that you hold. It never argues, it only accepts your commands. It accepts what you believe as the truth and manifests it according to those beliefs. Remember, your mind can be your best ally, or your worst enemy. It all depends how you want to use it.

This will help you look slim and hide your tummy fat. 4Avoid wearing shiny and bright colours on your upper body. 4Avoid wearing too tight or too loose cloths on your upper body. Too tight cloths will highlight your tummy even more, and your body looks shapeless if you wear too loose cloths. So, try to wear medium-fit cloths. 4Go for mid-rise when it comes to jeans, pants, shalwars or skirts. Wear them around your navel. This will help in concealing the tummy. 4If you are wearing tops, then body suits are the best option for you. This gives you a sleek look. 4Girls tend to buy clothes a size smaller thinking that it will make them look slimmer. On the contrary, this highlights your tummy and makes you feel uncomfortable. Therefore, the size of your body shaper should be one size larger. 4While buying undergarments, make sure you buy mid-rise panties. Avoid low or high-rise. 4Choose high slits while opting for kurtis. This helps in concealing the tummy. 4Layering is a good technique to conceal tummy fat. This divides your body into three parts and it helps in looking slimmer. For example, wear a contrast coloured jacket on your kurti. But the kurta should be of a different colour and the buttons should be kept open. 4With make-up as well as big earrings and neck pieces, you can attract the attention of others to your face and people won’t notice your tummy fat.

8 Uncommon Orthodontics Questions that Need to be Answered

Dr Vishal Sharma BSc, DDS, Cert. Ortho. FRCD(C), FCDS(BC)

A

s Abbotsford, Surrey and Langley orthodontists, Dr. Sharma and Dr. Lin answer patients’ questions every day. Usually, they’re related to the cost of Invisalign or braces, the length of treatment or the ideal age for kicking off the teeth-straightening process. However, every so often, we’ll get questions that are a little less common or, occasionally, pretty creative or unexpected. Based on our own experiences and the things people are asking on the Internet, here are some of the more uncommon orthodontics questions we’ve come across and, of course, our answers. 1. Can braces cause harm when going for an MRI? We’ve received questions before about an MRI and braces and it’s a good one. MRI, technically called magnetic resonance imaging, is an imaging exam that utilizes a really powerful magnetic field and radio waves to produce detailed images of the anatomy. Because of the magnetic field, it can be dangerous to have metal objects nearby, which is why when you have an MRI, they ask you to remove things like jewelry or coins in your pocket. It makes sense to worry about whether it’s safe to get an MRI with braces. However, studies of MRI and braces have shown that most orthodontic appliances, including braces, fixed retainers and some palatal expanders, are secure enough to be safe and they won’t heat the tissue around them to a worrisome degree. However, while getting an MRI with braces may be A-Okay as far as safety is concerned, it’s important to note that braces can result in artifacts, which are visual anomalies that interfere with the quality of the image. These artifacts usually occur on images of the facial, orbital or, sometimes, the brain and cervical spine regions. If you’re having a brain scan done or a scan of your sinuses, there’s a small chance that this could be an issue. Thankfully, there are different techniques that can be used to alleviate the artifact and get clearer images. It’s rare that a patient would be asked to remove their braces but it could happen if someone is being screened for a serious issue in the head or neck area, the technician can’t get the necessary images and it can’t wait until orthodontic treatment is finished. If you’re worried about complications from a brain scan and braces, talk to your physician and see what they recommend but you can be rest assured that it’s safe. 2. How can I take my braces off at home? We saw a question on an Internet forum about taking braces off at home. Thankfully, all of the answers strongly cautioned against doing this. The person inquiring had braces on for many years but moved out of state, didn’t have a new orthodontist and could no longer afford to finish treatment. They were interested in a DIY removal process and were wondering about the cons of taking braces off at

home. In the best case scenario, a person might be able to remove their brackets themselves. However, a special adhesive is used to bond your brackets to your teeth. Considering braces are a fixed orthodontic appliance and are meant to stay in place for quite some time, the glue is extremely strong. Without the right tools and experience, you’d likely have a good amount of that adhesive residue stuck to your teeth. The more likely consequence of taking your braces off at home is potentially causing harm. You could be left with cracked teeth, damaged enamel or even a missing tooth if you use force to try to remove your braces. Visiting an orthodontist and letting them know your situation is your best bet if you don’t want to continue treatment. We’re always willing to work with our Langley, Abbotsford and Surrey braces patients and we’d never let it get to the point that they felt they had to remove their hardware on their own. We suspect most doctors would also be willing to work with you in this situation. The cost of having a professional remove your braces pales in comparison to the cost of having damaged teeth restored. 3. Do people still get braces with headgear? Yes. Headgear still exists and, in some cases, it can be a good treatment option. It’s usually reserved for children in phase I orthodontic treatment who are still developing, as it can help with discrepancies in jaw growth or make space for teeth to come in. In adults or teens, braces and headgear isn’t usually the go-to combination. We have a lot of newer options like TADs (temporary anchorage devices), forsus springs and a slew of other orthodontic appliances that offer a great alternative to headgear. There’s still a stigma around headgear and, when possible, most doctors will try to create a treatment plan that involves wearing it at night or just when a patient is at home, so they don’t have to go to school with it. 4 What are the effects of not brushing your teeth with braces? Patients have asked us this before and it’s usually more out of curiosity and not out of a genuine desire to really skip brushing with braces. The brackets and wires used with braces create a food trap. If you don’t brush away this food debris, it will interact with the bacteria in your mouth and form plaque. When plaque isn’t removed, it releases acids that eat away at your tooth enamel, eventually causing tooth decay and gum disease. In a video Dr. Sharma made about how to brush and floss with braces, he even showed a few images of what happens when you don’t brush your teeth during treatment and, believe us, it’s not good. If the decay is left untreated, you could be looking at the need for extensive fillings or

root canals or end up with missing teeth or issues with your gums. You’ll have to put in some extra work to keep your teeth clean when you’re in orthodontic treatment. Correctly flossing and brushing with braces requires learning new techniques but if you’re investing in your smile, it’s well worth it to keep it looking bright. Braces work best in a healthy oral environment and getting cavities during treatment can slow the process down. The bottom line: brush those teeth in the morning, after meals and before bed and be sure to floss at least once a day! 5. Can braces cause loose teeth? Patients sometimes panic because their teeth feel loose after getting braces put on and they’re worried they’re going to fall out. It’s actually perfectly normal to feel like your teeth are loose with braces because your pearly whites are on move. The periodontal ligament stretches when faced with continuous pressure from braces or Invisalign aligners and then the bone that holds the teeth begins to break down in what’s known as bone remodeling. When this happens, the teeth loosen slightly to shift into their ideal locations. When treatment is over, new born forms around the teeth in their new places, the ligament tightens back up and the teeth are secured. If you sustain a blow to the face, however, and you have a loose tooth with braces, it could be another story. Dental trauma, particularly from sports, results in a lot of teeth being knocked out each year. To protect yourself, always wear a mouthguard. If, after getting hit in the face, you have a fractured, chipped, loose, displaced or completely missing tooth, head to your dentist as soon as possible. Teeth can often be re-implanted for a short time after the injury. Once the immediate aftermath has been dealt with, call our office and we’ll get you in to repair your braces and ensure your treatment stays on course. 6. Can braces change your personality? This one is another question we saw on the Internet. While the braces themselves can’t create any personality changes, you’ll probably notice some changes as you go through treatment and, more so, when your braces come off. We’re not talking about the materials interacting with your

brain chemistry or anything but about the huge boost in confidence you’ll get from loving your smile. Our society places a lot of emphasis on having perfect teeth and when you feel good about yourself and how others perceive you, it enhances your self-esteem. You’ll be more likely to take on challenges, interact with others, try new things and grow as a person. That certainly equates to a personality change. Before Dr. Lin and Dr. Sharma were Surrey, Abbotsford and Langley orthodontists, they were braces patients themselves. The confidence they gained from straightening their teeth and how it transformed them for the better were part of the reason they both got into the profession. It’s powerful stuff! Be prepared to become a more confident you when you’re finished treatment. 7. Do dental braces commonly cause people to develop lisps? Braces don’t cause a lisp in the longterm and they can actually be a treatment for certain speech problems. Some types of malocclusion (an improper bite) create a lisp and by repositioning the teeth and jaw through orthodontic treatment, it can improve a patient’s speech. In the short-term, there is a relationship between orthodontic appliances, including dental braces and lisps. When you first start braces, particularly if you have lingual braces, or Invisalign treatment, it may feel as if you’re talking funny while you get acclimated to having an appliance in your mouth. This goes away quickly. To speed up the process and help your speech return to normal, talk as much as you can. Practice makes perfect after all. Chat with friends on the phone, sing along to your favorite songs and read aloud to yourself. 8. Is it possible to liproll (beatbox technique) with braces? We’ve come across this question in forums and there are quite a few YouTube videos and tutorials about beatboxing with braces. It’s not a question many orthodontists probably hear very often. However, based on how awesome we’ve seen people beatbox with braces on, we’d say the answer is yes. As for the liproll, if your braces are causing you discomfort when you attempt to do it, you can try covering the brackets that are irritating your lips with orthodontic wax. If you have more questions about orthodontic treatment or you’re ready to start working on your dream smile, book a free consultation at Aura Orthodontics. Our Surrey, Abbotsford and Langley orthodontists will help you decide on the treatment option that’s best for your needs and answer all of your questions. Kundalini Yoga A way to experience the divine Kundalini yoga is a school of yoga focused on awakening the dormant Kundalini power in the body.

The Kundalini energy can be described as a powerful form of ‘Chi’ or ‘life energy’ in the form of a ‘sleeping serpent’ that upon being awakened leads to a deep feeling of enlightenment and bliss. Dr. Soorya Kaur, a Delhi-based yoga practitioner, nutritional expert and follower of the Yogi Bhajan School on Kundalini Yoga says, “Kundalini in its basic definition is yoga of awareness. It is concerned with inculcating in its practitioners various breathing postures that serves to increase and better the lung capacity while strengthening the nervous system and making it adept at receiving the flow of energy which is generated when the practitioner is engaged in meditation.”

The human body is composed of many systems but it is the nervous system which makes the body and core components perform optimally. It serves as the primary mode of understanding impulses and emotions that one experiences. If Kundalini is the life energy present in the body then Chakra points are the containers present in the body to sustain and act as a channel for the energy that travels from the base of the spine up till the crown of the head. Kundalini Yoga taps the dormant power in this system by awakening the Chakra Points that serve to increase awareness, blissfulness and understanding of the human body in its entirety both spiritually and physically. The Chakra Points in Kundalini are traditionally understood to be seven in number, depicted in increasing order below: • Muladhara or Root Chakra located at the end of the spinal column. It deals with survival and is blocked by fear. • Svadishthana or Sacral Chakra located at the tail bone or the pubic bone. It deals with pleasure and is blocked with guilt. • Manipura or Fire Chakra located just below the rib

cage. It deals with willpower and is blocked by shame. Anahata or Heart Chakra located in the centre of the chest close to the heart. It deals with love and is blocked by grief. Vishuddha or Sound Chakra located at the throat region near the spine. It deals with truth and is blocked by lies. Ajna or Light Chakra located directly behind the centre of the forehead. It deals with insight and is blocked by illusion. Sahasrara or Crown Chakra located slightly above the top of the head. It deals with cosmic energy and is blocked by earthly attachment.

In order to practice this form of yoga one needs the guidance of a guru as Dr Kaur believes, “A guru is especially important while understanding the intricacies of Kundalini yoga. Books, superficial explanations and online tutorials are not at all advisable for this branch of yoga as it requires a more personal interaction between a guru and his/her disciple.” But before practicing Kundalini Yoga, one needs to be away from smoking and drugs since they are an obstacle to the natural flow of energy. Exercise in the form of asanas is also beneficial to prepare the body to receive the flow of energy particularly padmasana or the lotus position, the vajrasana or diamond position amongst others that stimulate and strengthen the nervous system. Moreover Kundalini Yoga can be practiced by anyone with a deep resolve and focus, to reap the benefits of the natural energy that flows in the body. “Kundalini yoga can be practiced by three to five year old kids as well under proper guidance though the lessons would be introductory in the initial stages with more intricate lessons as the time progresses,” mentions Dr Kaur. One-minute party hairstyles Lazy girls, rejoice. These sexy hairdos take less than a minute to pull together. Clip up half A All you need for this nifty hairdo is a hair clip and a creative streak. Pull up a section of hair on either the left or the right side, or pull the front section back and clip it at the crown. Tease the hair at the crown before you pull it back for volume. Team it with: A structured ensemble or a skirt-and-jacket combination. Even Kate Middleton swears by this style when she’s going from a day event to a brunch. Low pony The low ponytail is a glamorous yet low maintenance style and needs a minute to create. Spray your hair and smooth it down. Pull it into a low-slung pony that sits on the nape of the neck. Attach a floral or a studded decorative pin over the band to look party-ready. Team it with: A feminine knee-length dress or even a jumpsuit. This is a versatile hairdo that looks effortless with androgynous outfits, too. 5-Second top knot Hide your frizz with a top knot. Gather your hair into a high ponytail and twist it into a bun. To smoothen it out, apply a shine serum. Embellish the knot with beads. You will look cool and relaxed without giving away last night’s escapades. Team it with: A sequinned maxi dress and an animal print coat to keep warm. Feather dusters or long danglers on your ears will make things ultra sexy. Cortsey: IANS

WESTERN COMMUNITY COLLEGE WELCOMES YOU BACK TO SCHOOL

F

all is that time of the year which reminds everyone of an important part of their life, that is, education. Students are excited to go back to school and learn new things. For some students, this will be the first time entering a school, college or university. This is a new beginning towards their bright future. Western Community college also welcomes people who have been postponing the thought of going back to school and giving a new beginning to their lives. Western Community College has been offering a variety of career-oriented programs to the people in the community since 2012. The college offers Diploma and certificate programs in the field of office administration, business, accounting, health care and accounting. Some people are hesitant to apply for further education as they are not much conversant in English. This bars them from striding their way towards success. Western Community College offers tailored English classes, which not only prepare the students to appear in various English assessment tests, but also to make them confident to appear for any job or immigration interviews. This fall, Western Community College invites you to come and get perfect advice for your career. The college also offers a unique program, HCA-Access, for the Internationally educated nurses who have been referred by the BC Care Aide Registry. This helps them to save time and money to enter the health care field. In the last one year, due to the opening of several jobs in Fraser Health, a lot of graduate students from the Health Care Assistant program from Western Community College have got Fraser Health jobs and have made their alma mater proud. To get more information about any programs or to enroll for the fall intake programs, feel free to contact Western Community College – Surrey
