Spotlight: B K Singh Rakhra

The untold saga of a cinephile H

e is a local treasure that has been based in Canada for many decades. Although, he has travelled across the globe and secured various acting stints across many genres, he found his home, heart and soul in British Columbia. B K Singh Rakhra, an accomplished actor who has played many prolific roles on both, the small and the big screen is nothing but a treasure of talent. He immigrated to Vancouver from India in 1974 and joined Punjabi theatre as he arrived. At the age of18, he grabbed his first role as the second lead in a Punjabi play Ratta Sallu directed by Yograj Sedha. The play had 3 full house shows in Vancouver in 1974. Director Yograj Sedha was part of well-known director Harpal Tiwana of Patiala Rang-Manch drama group. He was an actor and director with them for many years. Rakhra acted in many revered Punjabi plays and such as Hind di Chader, Sharbatti, Hawai Gole, Kursi Morcha Te Hava Wich Latakde Lok, Dooja Passa, Komagatamaru, Dhalde Parchave etc. to name a few. He has acted in many Punjabi movies like Jindua, Sardaar Ji, Stupid 7, Manje Bistre 2, Killer Punjabi, Masla Roti Da etc. He has acted with well known Punjabi drama directors such as Harpal Tiwana, Rang-Manch Patiala, Yog Raj Sedha, Gurshran Singh of Amritsar Nat- Kala, Mohan Bagan, Gurdeep Bhullar of Gurdeep Arts in Surrey, Ajmer Rodey and Bholi Grewalson.

He has been nominated for the esteemed Leo Awards for best performance in the film, Afternoon Tea .

He is a successful actor who has had the opportunity to work with well-known Hollywood directors like Brad Turner, Martin Wood, Tony Pantages, Jaffrey Hunt, Jay Chandrasekhar, Jeff Ridout, D J Parmar, Luca Brancot, Debra Burns, Garnet Campbell, Tin Pik Lau, Cody Fennel, Daniel Labossiere, Robin Ashmore, Rob Kelley, Jean Francois Depress etc. With such an extensive acting portfolio in a variety of genres and languages, B K Singh Rakhra has been able to accomplish a feat that very few South Asian artists have been able to. He has successfully crossed over into mainstream cinema while representing his culture and roots simultaneously.

Stock the fridge with braces-friendly food Adjusting to life with braces can be tough, especially for kids who might not be used to big life changes. In addition to seeing a new smile in the mirror, they also have to learn what they can and cannot eat. As parents, you can make the process easier by making sure the kitchen is stocked with braces-friendly food. Instead of packing sandwiches in their lunchboxes (bread can get stuck in braces), include easy-to-eat foods like soups, hard-boiled eggs, steamed vegetables or yogurt. At home, make braces-friendly meals for the whole family so your kids don’t feel singled out. Bonus: most foods that are safe for braces are super nutritious! By eating braces-friendly food as a family, your child or teen will never feel like they’re missing out. 4. Use positive reinforcement to reward good braces behaviour Just like your kids will need to get used to eating differently, they’ll also need to develop new habits to take care of their braces. They’ll need to be more diligent about brushing and flossing their teeth, and if they have Invisalign, they’ll need to clean their aligners properly. Offering positive reinforcement when they practice good oral hygiene will encourage the behaviour, making their treatment more effective and protecting your investment in their braces or Invisalign. It can help to continuously remind them to stay focused on the outcome: their perfect smile. Having an end goal to work towards will make it easier for them to stay on track. 5. Alarming Rise of STD in Canada

A

recent CBC news article brought to our attention an alarming rise of sexually transmitted diseases in Canada. The data from World Health Organisation indicates over one million new cases of STD infections on a daily basis worldwide.

Indulging in an act of vaginal sex, oral sex and anal sex can spread these diseases if one’s partner is infected and indulges in un-protected sex. Rates of chlamydia and gonorrhea across Canada have mushroomed, according to the latest figures compiled by CBC News, which comes amid a new surge in syphilis, HIV, hepatitis B, herpes and many more diseases that are often sexually transmitted. The figures show there were more than 126,700 chlamydia infections and 28,300 cases of gonorrhea diagnosed in 2017, the most recent year for which data is available. The federal government also recently announced more than $32 million in funding for research into STIs and bloodborne infections, writing that “rates of sexually transmitted infections in Canada have increased over the last decade — chlamydia increased by 49%, gonorrhea by 81%, and

syphilis by an alarming 178%.” Efforts to contain the spread of STIs, such as interventions aimed at reducing risky sexual behaviour, haven’t been sufficient as behavioural change is a complex challenge, particularly for marginalised populations. Complicating things is the fact that patients may have multiple conditions and coinfections. It may not merely be dealing with syphilis. It could be dealing with multiple infections such as HIV, hepatitis C, drug addiction or dealing with other mental health issues, making the process of being cured and recovered extremely complex. It is hence advised that one should take appropriate care of one’s health. Open communication is important along with safe sex. Avoiding multiple sex partners, seeking

prompt medical help and also getting over the stigma and rising above social, religious and cultural taboos can be a part of educating oneself about the STDs. While most STIs can be cured today, one thing that is on the public health radar is antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea. The concern is that we may be running out of antibiotics in the next few years, potentially, as resistance increases. Other factors that may be contributing to increasing rates include the decrease in the usage of external contraceptives, rise of on-line dating apps, lags in sexual health education, drug addiction and mental health concerns etc. Testing and treatment remain important, in large part because of the long-term consequences of STIs.

And STIs such as gonorrhea and chlamydia are major causes of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and infertility, according to WHO. Scarring of fallopian tubes harming fertility of those aged 15 to 29, is a potential consequence of repeated chlamydia infections that go untreated. Congenital syphilis, an STI passed to the baby in utero, can cause a number of deformities, as well as cognitive impairment. The golden rule is to prevent from STDs is to be cautious and act responsibly and if one develops it then early treatment should be sought for recovering the earliest.

All you need to know about dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs

I

n last month’s issue, we discussed the effects of what grain-free diets can do to your dog and cat. We mentioned

that one of the recently researched conditions that may have a link with grain-free pets is Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM).

As promised, we will discuss what this disease is, in detail, in this month, to better inform our readers what signs to look for! DCM is a common heart muscle disease found in dogs. This disease causes weakness in the heart’s muscles making them contract and also contributes towards poor pumping function. Congestive heart failure is often a condition seen with DCM, since the heart chambers potentially begin to enlarge, which allows valves to leak. As mentioned, one recently discovered cause of DCM could be grain-free diets being given to your pet. However, there are other causes as well. DCM can be an inherited predisposition in certain dog breeds, such as: American and English Cocker Spaniels, Afghan Hounds, Boxers, Doberman Pinschers, English Bulldogs, Great Danes, Irish Wolfhounds, Newfoundlands, Saint Bernards and Scottish Deerhounds. DCM can also occur as a consequence, due to a primary infection or toxin found in your pet. A common cause of DCM can be the lack of ‘Taurine’ in the diet. Taurine is a nutrient that aids in providing healthy heart function, reproductive health, retinal function and it also is a component of bile acids. Deficiency in such

case can lead to Dilated Cardiomyopathy. In any such cases, initially DCM does not typically present with any clinical signs. Your dog may show some reduction in wishing to move around or exercise, to which veterinarians refer as ‘exercise intolerance’. Some dogs may also show a small heart murmur upon presentation or abnormal/ irregular heart sounds. A persistent cough can also be seen, along with difficulty in breathing, anorexia (chronically losing weight due to loss of appetite) and even episodes of collapse. If you are at all in any doubt of if your dog may have such signs, then it is highly recommended for you to have your pet examined by a professional. If DCM is not dealt with at the right time, it can potentially lead towards heart failure and other complications. Signs of progressed heart failure would include labored breathing, cough, exercise intolerance, collapse, not wishing to lie down, not feeling at ease and being restless or loss of appetite. When you bring your dog to your local veterinarian, he or she will first conduct a proper physical examination. A cardiac examination will also be performed, in which your vet can determine if there are any abnormalities in your dog’s heart sounds or rhythms. Typically, chest radiographs, electrocardiogram or even an echocardiogram can be done to detect a further diagnosis. These tests allow for your vet to detect the level of severity of his patient at hand. When it comes to treatment, each case is dealt with individually. However, generally dogs showing no particular signs will be treated with drugs like Enalapril or others in its category that allow signs of heart failure to regress. Treatment options will always be subjective to each individual patient and the level of severity of their condition. However, it is important to keep in mind that since DCM is not reversible, the amount of treatment will most likely increase over time as the condition progresses at its rate. o physical endurance prepares you for the pain of a broken heart. There is nothing that compares to the trauma, nothing soothes you either. But eventually, you grow out of it, and when you do, you realise how much you have learnt and grown in the process. The same pain that felt like it would kill you has been survived, and you learnt so much from it. Looking at the brighter side, let’s see how a broken heart helps to fix many other things in life.

There are hundreds of similes that tell you that once your trust is betrayed you do not trust again easily. Past experiences make you more vary, and when your heart is broken you know you cannot depend on another person. You are not naive anymore and you know that those who are to be trusted in life will prove it with their actions and not their words.

Maturity lies in realising how you could be wrong, not once or twice but a few times. When your heart-break is fresh, it might be hard to objectively conclude what your mistakes were. However, when the storm passes you are capable of noticing where you went wrongin ways big and small.

This is not to say you will not trust people, but you will understand that people are imperfect and make mistakes

Unlike Vancouver, which is filled with skyscrapers and a high rises all across, Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia has a laid back and relaxed vibe. 1. Royal BC Museum It is said to be one of the finest museums in B.C and is carrier of a ‘royal’ prefix since 1987. Built in the late 1880s, it drew its architectural inspiration from a medieval Gothic style known as ‘Scottish Baronial’ then experiencing a Victorian revival.

3. Parliament Buildings This beautifully constructed area is the home to British Columbia’s working legislature and is also open to visitors. It is adorned with many turrets, domes and stained glass. Visitors can take a free 45-minute guided tour and also have lunch at the ‘secret’ politicians’ restaurant inside. In the evening, the parliament is a sight to behold as the exterior is illuminated like a Christmas tree. These buildings were constructed in the 1890s in a mix of renaissance, Romanesque and classical styles after the government had outgrown the original legislature. The current ceremonial entrance has a mosaic floor and is embellished with Italian marble, while the graceful dome is topped on the outside by a gold-encrusted statue of George Vancouver (an early explorer of BC’s coastal regions).

4. Miniature World This place is a flawlessly maintained reminder of the attractions from the olden days. Tucked along the side of the Fairmont Empress Hotel, The Miniature world has a huge collection of skillfully crafted models depicting important battles, historic towns and popular stories. Divided into themes ranging from Camelot to space and from fairyland to old England, it has plenty of push-button action, several trundling trains and the chance to see yourself on a miniature movie-theater screen. The place is surely far more fascinating than it sounds.

5. Beacon Hill Park

Appropriately known as the City of Gardens, Victoria’s year-round mild coastal climate makes gardening and all things flora-focused a passion of the city, region and visitors alike. The Greater Victoria area, nestled in beautiful, rugged west coast terrain, is home to dozens of gardens and provincial, regional and municipal parks, including some of the most famous in Canada. As early as February, blooms spring up across Victoria while much of Canada is still covered in snow. The Beacon Hill, a waterfront park is ideal for a stroll, a morning run or just enjoying a sunny day picnic with your family. If you’re here with kids, consider the popular children’s farm as well.

After the huge success of the recently held fundraiser event by Hand on Back Community Services Society for Cancer research at the Real Canadian Superstore in King George, Surrey, the organisers want to thank the supporters, volunteers and sponsors for their support and love. The Real Canadian Superstore has been a part of this program from the start and their efforts are highly appreciated. The event saw a great participation, which not only helped the organisers beat their target goal of $50k, but also left them in high spirits. They believe that the event provides an opportunity to the youth to participate and organize various edeavours that can create awareness to fight cancer and benefit the society. The fundraiser was continued till August 30.

So,whenever you are heading out next for your grocery shopping next, make sure to buy the ingredients and make your festive season flavourful with these amazing Indian sweets.

Shahi Saffron Pistachio Seviyan This thick and creamy seviyan recipe is filled with the aromatic and delicious flavors of saffron, pistachio, almond and rosewater for that perfect festive dessert. Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes Total time: 20 minutes Ingredients: 41 cup vermicelli 42.5 cup whole milk 41.5 tbsp ghee 4¼ cup sugar 4 4-5 saffron threads - soaked in 2 tbsp warm milk 4¼ cup pistachio - chopped 4¼ tsp cardamom powder 41.5 tbsp milk powder 41 small silver edible leaf Instructions 4 Heat ghee (clarified butter) in a deep non-stick pan. Add vermicelli and roast it for 2-3 minutes on low flame. 4 Now add 1 curhsed cardamom, 2tbsp pistachio and roast for a minute. 4 Add milk, soaked saffron, stir it continuously till milk comes to a boil and then reduce the heat to low. Let the vermicelli simmer in milk for 3-4 minutes (stir every 1 minute). 4 Now, add sugar and boil milk till it becomes slightly thicker. 4 Mix 2tbsp water in dry milk powder and make a paste. Stir this milk powder paste and mix evenly in the cooked vermicelli. 4 Increase the heat to high and bring to boil. Turn off the heat and let this sit for 2-3 minutes (this thickens the vermicelli and makes it extra creamy). 4 Transfer the cooked vermicelli to a serving bowl. Top with chopped pistachio, some saffron strands and silver leaf.

Malai Chum Chum Malai Chum Chum or spongy milk fudge is an authentic Bengali sweet which has a similar texture like rasgullas but is rich with khoya filling and served with malai or rabdi. Prep time: 20 mins Cook time: 20 mins Total time: 40 mins Serves: 15 people Ingredients To make chenna/paneer: 4Full fat milk - 1 litre 4Citric acid - ¼ tsp 4Cornflour - 2 tsp 4 Orange food color - few drops For sugar syrup: 4Sugar - 1½ cups 4Water - 3 cups For khoya filling: 4Grated khoya - ½ cup 4 Icing sugar/powdered sugar - ¼ cup 4Crushed cardamom - 3 For rabdi/malai: 4Milk - 1 cup 4 Grated khoya/mawa - ½ cup 4Sugar - 2 tsp/as required 4 Crushed cardamom - a pinch To garnish: 4 Coconut flakes/grated coconut - as desired 4 Almonds/pistachios - as required Instructions 4 Take a thick bottomed pan and bring the milk to boil. Once the milk boils, switch off the flame, let it cool a little bit. Then add citric acid and stir well till the milk curdles. 4 Now use a colander/ strainer and line it with one layer of cheese cloth. Pour the curdled milk and pass it through strainer, collect chhenna and let the whey drain out fully. 4 Bring all edges of the cheese cloth together and press hard so that all the whey drains out. Don’t over knead so that oil starts releasing. 4 While kneading, add few drops of food colouring. 4 When kneading is done, start taking little portions from chhenna and shape them long in a long shape. Dont make them very long as they increase in size when cooked. Keep these aside

4 After 8 minutes, remove pressure cooker from flame and bring out all the pressure by pulling the whistle. 4 Open the lid, and you will see the Chums Chums have fluffed up. Now, place the cooker on flame again and do not cover with lid this time. On a low flame, let it boil for 5 minutes. 4 After 5 minutes, remove pressure cooker from

flame and let these cool down. 4 Once cool, take them out from the pressure cooker and keep them on a plate. 4 As they rest, they do not remain very soft. Now start stuffing them one by one. 4 To stuff the chum chums, make a deep cut on each piece vertically and stuff it with the prepared khoya mixture in the cavity made by the cut. 4 Dip stuffed Chum Chum in the prepared rabdi and then roll in coconut flakes. Garnish with chopped almonds/ pistachios and serve on a plate layered with rabdi.

4 By now sugar syrup would be boiling, start adding the prepared chhenna one by one. 4 Close lid of the pressure cooker and keep on a high flame till it whistles once, then reduce the flame and let it cook for 8 minutes more but do not let it whistle again. 4 While the chum chums get ready, make the khoya stuffing and rabdi. 4 For khoya filling, in a plate take grated khoya, icing/powdered sugar, crushed cardamom and mix well using your hands. Drop a little milk to bring the filling together if you feel the mixture is too dry. When ready, keep aside. 4 For rabdi, place a thick

The poem was written by Professor Avtar S. Virdi. These lines helped me to take the most important and difficult decision of my life. I made up my mind to sacrifice my love for the better future of my family members. Amrit wasn’t ready for the exchange marriages at all. He was very tense. I pleaded with Amrit to do so for the sake of his brother and my parents. I implored him for the sake of our love. He became very upset. I made him understand that it would be in favor of all of us what his mother wanted. I told Amrit that he also had an obligation to help his brother. I talked to my parents in this regard. I assured them that Meenu would be very happy with Amrit. They accepted the exchange-marriage plan of Amrit’s mom. The next day, I

When I reached home, I got a call from my lawyer that I had the final hearing on my divorce the subsequent week. I called Amrit the next day. He came. I asked him about his brother. Amrit told me that Baljit was thirty. He wasn’t well educated. Their dad asked him to help in their trucking business when he saw Baljit disinterested in his studies. Unfortunately, one of their company truck drivers lured him into using drugs. Baljit began taking heavy doses of drugs. When his dad learned about Baljit’s condition, he took him to

various doctors to help him get rid of drug addiction. Baljit finally quit drugs, but his health had deteriorated very badly by that time. He turned very quiet after that. He got married three years ago. But he got divorced within a few months. He didn’t take any drugs. He took care of all their transport business. He never spoke anything bad to anyone. But Amrit did tell me that Baljit was no match for me at all. My life was at stake. My personal desires had no values. It was far more important that my family members come to Canada than my personal happiness. Mom had already become a hardcore believer in astrology. She showed Meenu’s horoscope to a pandit. He told that Meenu had a chance (favorable starposition) to go abroad.

One of the cutest looks of this decade is the half updo: part your hair around the crown from one ear to another and put it in a high to mid-high ponytail. Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s life story to hit the big screen

he life story of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is set to unfold on the big screen.

Vajpayee, a senior BJP leader and one of the founding members of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS), died on August 16 in 2018 after a prolonged illness. Shiva Sharma and Zeeshan Ahmad, owners of Amaash Films, have acquired the official rights of the book,”The Untold Vajpaye” written by Ullekh N P, and has decided to unveil the several aspects of Vajpaye’s life from his childhood, college life, him turning into a politician.

“The Untold Vajpayee’ is one of my most ambitious projects and it gives me a feeling of immense honour and joy to be able to put up this unsung hero onto the big screen. Also, I believe not everyone knows the real side of Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji. While reading this book, I also discovered quite a lot about his personality traits, the work done by him during his tenure as a Prime Minister for our country,” said Sharma. “These all unseen and untold traits of his personality inspired me to put his story out to the world and inspire other people as well.” Ahmad shared the scripting of the movie has already started. “Once the scripting is completed, we shall finalise the director and the actors for the film. National Award was always on my bucket list: Ayushmann Khurrana Winning the National Award was always on Ayushmann Khurrana’s bucket list, contends the actor, who is “ecstatic” as his wish has been fulfilled with a double dose of delight.

t the National Film Awards 2019, after all, not only did Ayushmann win Best Actor for his role in Andhadhun, but his other release last year, Badhaai Ho, ended up winning the honour for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. “I am feeling ecstatic. Actually, I am still trying to digest this. It on my bucket list when I came to Mumbai to become an actor,” Ayushmann told in an interview. “The kind of films that I do is about credibility and content. I was actually looking forward to this to happen someday in my life. Actually, when you’re doing a particular film, you don’t do it thinking about an award, but I am glad this happened with Andhadhun,” he added. Ayushmann, who has been impressing all with his unique choice of films that focus primarily on content, informed that his family is overwhelmed after his win. “My father was almost choking on the phone when we spoke, after hearing the news. He was so overwhelmed that he could not talk properly. I feel it was even more overwhelming for him than me. Tahira (the actor’s wife) was also emotional,” said the 34-year-old, who shared his Best Actor trophy with Vicky Kaushal’s performance for Uri: The Surgical Strike. Ayushmann was shooting for an ad-film when the news reached him. “I was shooting for an ad-film and there were people around me. So, it wasn’t exactly a ‘me moment’ for me. I was busy with the shot when suddenly congratulatory messages started pouring in on my phone. I was so shocked to learn that all this has happened -it was all so surreal. Incidentally, I was shooting with the cinematographer of Uri (which won Best Actor and Best Director). So, both of us did a high five and the entire crew started applauding. They arranged for a special celebration for me on the set. It was quite overwhelming,” he recalled. This is why all programs have electives so you can do some investigation on different subjects during your first and second year. When you do choose a program, take heart – it is not set in stone. According to a study, it is revealed that an average student across North America tends to change his program three times during the course of his higher education and also often changes careers several times. This could be easily changed if one is aware about a lot of options available in the domain of education. Choosing a program made easier! • If you are looking for a program that will allow you to enter directly into a specific career after graduation, then professional programs like engineering, social

work, nursing etc. will allow you to do so. • Talk to faculty, friends, family and other students about their careers and major choices. • Evaluate your skills. How well do they match your interests? Narrow down your choices by doing research into different areas. • If you are uncertain but you know you want Humanities (English, History, Philosophy), apply to a Humanities program and see if you like it. There are more than enough options for electives built into the first and second year that allows you to change your mind later. • If you know you want to be in Science but are unsure which specific major, use your first year’s electives to try out your options to help you figure it out. • If you are not sure whether to apply for a 3-year BA or a 4-year HBA, apply to the 4-year HBA as you can always go down, but you may not be able to switch up. What is a program Major? • A major is a concentration of courses that will focus and shape your academic, intellectual and developmental experiences. • A major should interest and excite you.

• A major will be one third to three quarters of your total coursework depending on which major you choose. • A major is only one piece of the educational puzzle. • A major does not necessarily define your career path! The curious case of Rishabh Pant R

ishabh Pant is one of the most exciting young cricketers in the world. Right from the day he made his debut for India, there is a lot of excitement among Indian cricket fans and they are hoping that he would go on to replace MS Dhoni as India’s wicketkeeper-batsman in all three formats of the game. The selectors also understand this and they have been backing the young Delhi boy by giving him as many opportunities as they can across all three formats. In Test cricket, Pant has already replaced Wriddhiman Saha as the first-choice wicketkeeper by scoring hundreds in England and Australia. His Gilchrist-like approach in Test cricket has impressed one and all and it would be fair to say that the selectors would want to keep investing on him and give him a long-run in red-ball cricket. However, in white-ball cricket, Pant hasn’t made an impact that fans and selectors expect from him. His shot selection has been outrageous on most occasions and thrown away good opportunities to seal his place in India’s ODI and T20 squad. In the recently concluded ODI series against Windies, Pant faced a lot of criticism for his irresponsible stroke play and his ordinary show has once again opened the ‘Who will replace MS Dhoni?” debate.

Pant batted at the ‘most talked about’ number 4 position but he looked out of place, more often than not. He was not able to absorb the pressure after India lost early wickets and rather than trying to build a partnership and steady the innings, Pant tried to slog his way out and threw his wicket away. The problem with Pant is that he either blocks or tries to for a slog six, and this is the reason why he struggles to rotate the strike, which ultimately results in him playing a shot that isn’t there. If the selectors want to give a long-rope to Rishabh Pant in limited-overs cricket, then he should bat at number 6. It’s a more suitable batting position for his batting style. His natural game is to attack and batting at number 6 will give him that liberty to go after the bowlers right from the word go. He is not someone who can build the innings at the stage of his career but he is a very powerful hitter of the cricket ball who can destroy any bowling attack on his day. It’s a tricky situation for the thinktank and selectors, but considering his overflowing talent and good record in red-ball cricket, India will have to be very careful while managing Rishabh Pant. There are a lot of expectations from the young man as replacing a legend like MS Dhoni is never going to be easy, but the coaching staff, selectors and Virat Kohli need to asses this situation quickly and find a suitable batting position for him, which, presently, is number 6.

opular comedian Bharti Singh feels humour comes naturally to her because she is an Amritsari.

Fans were pouring in at the outdoor shoot, and controlling crowds was becoming a tough task, even as the sun was beating down. “Outdoor shoots can actually be tough. We are here shooting at the BSF camp with soldiers and the 12-noon sun is really scorching the skin. But (I have) no complaints when I look at the enthusiasm of these soldiers,” said Harsh.

When we look for a project, we need a writer, actor and an idea or concept. We had all of it, but nobody would give us work for two years. When a steady career is interrupted by a gap of two years, it can be worrying, but Bharti kept saying, “lage rehte hai, bura waqt chala jayega (let’s bet at it, the bad times will pass).” Finally, Khatra Khatra Khatra happened and we saw light at the end of the tunnel,” shared Harsh.

The ace comedian was at Attari-Wagah border to shoot special Independence Day episodes for the TV show, “Khatra Khatra Khatra”, with the Border Security Force (BSF).

Bharti added: “It is amazing how our soldiers carry out their duty under the scorching heat, wearing those heavy boots and uniform. At least, we are in light cottons -- just look at their heavy uniform.”

According to the couple, their concept started out as an experiment with 20 episodes, and now with the show gaining popularity, it is running in its 100th episode.

Bharti and her husband, screenwriter Harsh Limbachiyaa, also shot across various locations in Amritsar along with Avika Gor, Aditya Narayan and Gaurav Dubey. Different parts of the city where they filmed the show included the famous 100-year-old eatery Kesar Da Dhaba and the BSF camp. They also interacted with locals, most of who were huge fans of Bharti.

So, what is her best memory of Amritsar? “Honestly, my memories as a little girl, of my mother struggling to feed me and my siblings, are ones I would rather never revisit. I worked hard to get rid of those days. I am happy now. I am married. After the shoot Harsh and I will explore new places to eat. We shot at Kesar da Dhaba and, of course, ate sinfully!” she replied.

“So far, 2019 has been a good year for us. It was our dream to do a special episode with the BSF soldiers and getting permission is usually tough. But we are lucky that our show is popular among their families and they have readily given us permission. Since childhood, I struggled but everything I have achieved made me realise that hard work pays off,” mentioned Bharti.

“Being an Amritsari, I think comedy comes naturally to me. I feel it is in my blood. I will continue to do comedy because, in this stressful life, nothing is a bigger blessing than becoming a source of laughter and entertainment. I am a Punjabi, so I take everything lightly, with a laugh,” Bharati said, about why, instead of experimenting with various genres, she prefers sticking to comedy, which comes naturally to her.

Batla House: Facts messed up by fiction

Article 15 BY: VINAYAK CHAKRAVORTY Cast: John Abraham, Mrunal Thakur, Ravi Kishen; Direction: Nikkhil Advani Rating: In various interviews, the Batla House team has declared that their film is an attempt to seek definite answers to questions that still remain, regarding the alleged Batla House encounter in Delhi’s Okhla area that happened in the aftermath of the 2008 serial blasts. Ironically, in a crucial courtroom scene of the climax, when the defense and prosecution are arguing to establish the guilt or innocence of a key suspect, an announcement appears on the screen stating that the filmmakers “do not endorse the viewpoint of either party”. You realise at that point where the problem with the film lies. Like most other mainstream Bollywood efforts claiming to bare truths, Batla House, too, is hesitant when it comes to bluntly stating facts. When it does take a stand in the end, the film seems almost apologetic to do so – the protagonist doles out a lecture on how the impressionable youth who get sucked into terrorism are not to be blamed, that the fault lies with the harbingers of religion who abuse faith to brainwash them. It takes a while for the film to reach that sort of an indecisive stage, after the advantage of an impressive start is squandered away over the larger part of its nearly two-and-half hour runtime. Nikkhil Advani has credibly handled the genre of gritty thriller based on real-life terror in his 2013 release, D-Day. With Batla House he somehow struggles to maintain an urgency in the drama that unfolds. An elaborate statutory note right at the start, in Hindi and English, declares that the film is fiction based on facts. Probably Advani forgot a balance between fiction and facts had to be maintained. He allots too much screen time to unnecessary melodrama – mostly concerning the hero’s troubled marriage, his wife’s travails because she is a TV journalist and hence has to face the heat when he lands in controversy, the hero’s inner demons that continue to torment him after the killings. John Abraham cuts a pic-ture of gravitas as the film’s hero Sanjay Kumar, the top cop in the line of fire after the encounter-op, because he headed it. The film would have us believe ACP Sanjay Kumar, who was in charge, did not give the go-ahead for the operation – that his immediate subordinate, Kishen Kumar Sharma (Ravi Kishen), took it upon himself to lead the cops into the building even before Sanjay reached the spot. John carries off the quasifictional creation Sanjay Kumar with admirable restraint, in what has to be a career-defining role. As flawed screenwriting leads to uneven storytelling, the actor exudes tremendous screen presence to keep you engaged.

Ritesh Shah’s writing sets up the encounter incident right at the start, with pulsating suspense and drama. As things go horribly wrong, the police are forced to open fire. Getting out of the area would have been a problem for ACP Sanjay and his team, unless back-up force arrived in time. Thereafter, things go downhill for the cops. The film loses its initial inertia as Advani spends too much footage explaining how the whole world starts to hate Delhi Police, and dubs them as murderers of innocent students after the Batla House killings. Activists, students, placard-flashing protestors and news channels alike demand ‘justice’ for the young men, convinced they are innocent students. For Sanjay, the deal is tougher because higher authorities seem obsessed on hushing up further probe. The political top brass would rather confer a bravery medal to Sanjay and get him off the

case, than allow him the scope to investigate and clear his name. Batla House names Indian Mujahideen as the masterminds of the serial blasts but refuses to probe deeper. Sanjay’s entire operation is overwhelmed by the demands of fiction, which affects its search for truth. While scenes of the hero’s topsy-turvy marriage hinders pace in the first half, Nora Fatehi’s item number seems wholly out of place in what should have been an edge-of-the-seat second half. John Abraham’s act apart, there is not much to talk about among the cast. Mrunal Thakur, seen recently in the Hrithik Roshan-starrer Super 30, suffers from a badlypenned role. Even a proven talent as Rajesh Sharma (as the defence lawyer) slips into the tendency to ham. Batla House could have been a terrific film. It remains a tepid effort. Source: IANS

‘Mission Mangal’: Ordinary film about an extraordinary feat

Dattatreya Director: Jagan Shakti Rating: Going to Mars is about as much of a challenge as chomping on a Mars chocolate bar -- at least, that’s the impression “Mission Mangal” gives you. Akshay Kumar’s latest ode to the nation prioritises the need to match the feel-good spirit of an extended holiday weekend, so much so it misses out on setting up the drama and thrill of a scientific feat that is nothing short of historic for India. “Mission Mangal” packs in essential masala. There is a pleasant undercurrent of humour all along. Director Jagan Shakti and his battery of co-screenwriters (R. Balki, Nidhi Singh Dharma and Saketh Kondiparthi) sets up smaller subplots of melodrama within the basic storyline to describe the personal lives of its protagonists -- in rather unnecessary detail. For the lack of a genuine antagonist in the real-life sage it is based on, the script invents a ‘villain’ too -- by way of Dalip Tahil’s NASA-returned Indian expert at ISRO, who sneers and snarls at every ‘desi’ effort by Akshay Kumar and team to do something original without foreign aid. Notably, for a film that narrates a national achievement, “Mission Mangal” is lower on the jingoism quotient than many of Akshay’s past odes to the

nation. Of course, there is a line by our hero advocating why Make In India matter in ISRO’s scheme of things, but the idea is kept to a minimum. Director Jagan Shakti maintains pace through most of the first half, as the story begins at a point where an ambitious ISRO project goes kaput. Rakesh Dhawan (Akshay Kumar), a maverick genius scientist who was in charge of the project, takes blame, although it was project director Tara Shinde (Vidya Balan) who was actually at fault. Following the failure, Rakesh is shunted to a project no one believes will ever take off -- in a country that was still struggling at that point to send a rocket to moon, Rakesh is asked to head India’s mission to Mars. Only, despite the odds stacked up against the project, Tara is confident that Mars may not be a distant dream, after all. She manages to convince Rakesh the project could actually take off, with the right team and execution. That build-up portion of the script intertwines personal lives of Tara and her team with the account of the mission itself. So, Eka Gandhi, the propulsion control expert (Sonakshi Sinha), starts off as a youngster who hates most things Indian and looks for the first chance to get away to NASA. Spacecraft anatomy designer Neha Siddiqui (Kirti Kulhari) is fighting social ostracism owing to her minority status. The navigation expert Krittika Agarwal (Taapsee Pannu) must, as a devoted

wife, tend to her armyman husband when he is injured in the line of duty. Varsha Pillai (Nithya Menen), the satellite designer, battles her mother-in-law’s taunts at home for not being able to bear a child. Tara herself has her days full, balancing career, home, husband and two teenage kids. Too much footage is allotted to each of these substories, which distracts from what the film was essentially supposed to be a gripping drama of an overwhelming achievement. ISRO’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) was accomplished in record time, using minimal funds and skeletal infrastructure. It had to be realised in one attempt, as the reluctant space organisation was not too keen to shell out any more funds for the project. The gravity of such an achievement never really comes across. To their credit, Jagan Shakti and his co-writers have managed to keep the narrative lucid despite the fact that they were dealing with a storyline that is heavily technical. The cinematography and special effects are functional, though a lot of the melodrama could have been edited. For Akshay Kumar, this is a very different national-

ist hero. For a change, he is only a catalyst to the epic achievement. Despite enjoying maximum footage, Akshay is actually letting the female protagonists push the plot. In fact, it is interesting to note how, in a particular Metro Rail sequence when he is tipsy after a pub-hopping spree, the macho Rakesh is protected from a bunch of ruffians by the gang of girls. “Mission Mangal” is a feelgood toast girl power, and the fact is an advantage for its female cast. Vidya Balan, Sonakshi Sinha, Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari and Nithya Menen get wellcrafted roles that fit seamlessly to give the film its multistarrer entirety. Sharman Joshi and veteran National Awardwinning Kannada actor HG Dattatreya complete the team of scientists who made MOM possible. They get the odd scene to shine, providing able support to the lead cast. The cast overall remains a big draw in a film that somehow becomes mediocre somewhere down its runtime, despite its subject. “Mission Mangal” ends up an ordinary film about an extraordinary feat. U

rvashi Rautela, an acclaimed name in the modeling industry, made her Bollywood debut with Singh Sahab the Great opposite Sunny Deol. She was next seen in Bhaag Johnny, Sanam Re, Great Grand Masti, Hate Story 4 to name a few. The actress has also given a shot in the Kannada and Bengali cinema. Apart from that she has also featured in various music videos like Love Dose, Laal Dupatta and Gal Ban Gayi. Rautela has loved modeling ever since she started walking! Urvashi won the title of Miss Teen India in 2009. During her teenage years, apart from being a super model, Urvashi walked for various designers at various fashion shows and no doubt, she is one of the favourites of many fashion designers. At the age of 17, Urvashi won Indian Princess 2011, Miss Tourism World 2011, Miss Asian Supermodel 2011, Miss Tourism Of The Year 2011. Not only that, in 2012, she won the coveted crown of I AM She Miss Universe India and also a special award for Miss Photogenic. She is the only Indian to have won Miss Universe India, twice. Last month, she walked the ramp for the 10th time as a show-stopper at the LakmĂŠ India Fashion Week held in

In the last 30 years medical science has developed a lot. There are some areas- with surgery in particular - where Allopathy scores better than alternate therapies.

How does technology affect the human body?

Is Tech Good or Bad for the Body? After researching “How To Improve Your Health With Technology” and with more and more of us using technology in our daily lives, we became curious about the impact of technology on the human body. And not just with the use of smart phones by your ear, we are talking about habits beyond this. Simpler Days versus Modern Medicine: During meetings, doctors often debate the impact of technology on the human body, and there are broadly two camps: the traditionalists who want a return to the long forgotten “simpler days”, and the modernists who embrace the rapidly changing landscape of modern medicine. Whatever your view, there are compelling arguments on both sides and I would place myself somewhere in the middle. While I appreciate technology and the possibilities it brings to the lives of mankind, I am less enthralled with the way that it has influenced individuals in recent times. Glued to Our Screens As you’re sitting on the tube, or enjoying a coffee, take a look around you right now and count how many people (including you) are glued to a screen at this very moment. Nobody can deny that technology pervades almost every living moment, in some cases permeating our very essence. Given the rapid advances we have seen recently, we must acknowledge what effects (good and bad) technology is having on our bodies and our health. The Good Improved Medicine Makes Us Live Longer On a macroscopic level, technology is doing great: we’re living longer with advances in healthcare, pharmacology and molecular biology. Modern medicine has effectively doubled the average human lifespan in a little over a century. When we get sick, what can’t a modern doctor do? On a normal day at work we could spot an early cancer and have it staged within two weeks, work out someone’s risk of having a stroke or a heart attack and then reduce it with the click of a button, inject medicine into a joint to make it move again and prescribe a pill that, for a depressed patient, would make life worth living again.

There was a time, not long ago, when snapping your cruciate ligament would result in a lifetime of disability leading to misery and sometimes poverty. Such an injury is now a badge of honour amongst wealthy middleclass skiers and would cause no more than an inconvenient visit to the doctor. Self-diagnosing with Dr Google Whereas in the past, people had to depend primarily on their doctors for information and advice about their health, now the Internet has evolved, stepping in as an amazing resource for those seeking health-related information. Dr Google has fuelled a certain amount of hypochondria around personal health but it has led to patients feeling more involved in their health choices. Medical data is frequently being published online and Google is currently taking steps to make symptom-searching less scary by adding sensible medical advice, written by its own team of doctors. Studies predict that within ten years a medical check-up could involve more interaction with sensors, cameras and robotic scanning devices than human doctors and nurses, as healthcare organisations rebuild services around the Internet of Things (IoT). Using app-based and wearable tools to monitor your health and even carry out your own scans, patients will finally have the ability to self-diagnose a wide number of conditions at home, without needing to visit a surgery or hospital. Tech Gadgets Enhance Health and Fitness As the health tech revolution

continues to develop at pace, it has become easier for us to access our health metrics through our smart devices. This information can be extrapolated, and AI can suggest changes which could improve your health and help to manage health conditions. From fitness bands to smart watches and sensors, and tech with medical applications like blood glucose monitors, health tech is now being widely adopted by many people who want to take personal responsibility for their health. For example, using a smart scale which hooks up to an app, enabling you to track your weight loss goals and progress. Many health commitments fail because of lack of focus or because we struggle to fit them into our day to day lives. But with fitness gadgets, we can find motivation by setting ourselves daily goals and activity reminders to move more. The Bad Smartphones cause ‘musculoskeletal problems’ If we narrow our focus we get a snapshot of the ‘trickle down’ effects that technological advancement is having on our daily health. The single biggest culprit may be the device you are reading this article on right now: your smartphone – a device which allows us to communicate with anyone in the world, have access to almost all known human knowledge, and which guides our health decisions daily – a device which we are hopelessly addicted to. This ubiquitous gadget might be harming your health and there seems to be more and more evidence to support this theory.

With increased usage of smartphones, tablets and laptops, more people are visiting their doctors with musculoskeletal complaints such as ‘tech neck’ (neck strain) or ‘text claw’ (tenosynovitis). Scrolling on Instagram for hours and incessant text messaging is negatively affecting our posture and putting pressure on our necks and backs. The repetitive motor activity of texting and grasping our smartphones can cause muscle tension and pain in our forearms, wrists and fingers. Sleep deprivation and screen strain There is evidence that our daily ‘screen time’ has multiple negative effects on our mental health, causing sleep disturbance, headaches and mood problems including Generalised Anxiety Disorder and Depression. Staring at a screen for too long can exhaust our sight, causing our vision to become blurry, and drying out our eyes. You may also experience tension headaches as another result of digital eye strain. Research shows that excessive tech use – particularly right before bedtime – can have an adverse impact on our sleep cycles thanks to the glowing light that’s emitted from screens.
