s time has passed we as the global community have come to observe a new trend, that is Canada receiving an educational superpower status after what it has successfully achieved with its school student population.

International Pisa tests of the recent years have come to reflect a new trend: the teenagers of Canada are among the best educated in the world as per tests conducted by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Canadians teens are stiff competition to peers in countries that have a reputation for being the best at subjects like science, maths, and reading. This is also reflected in the highest average percentage of working adults having high education qualification - a whopping 55% while other well-to-do countries in this regard are only at an average of 35% as evaluated by OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development).

The education director of OECD, Andreas Schleicher observes that this has to do with the equity offered by Canada to its opportunity seekers. The largest number of students in Canadian schools are from families of migrants where both parents are from outside Canada. The migrants coming into Canada itself are relatively well educated and skilled. This results in a cultural focus from these families on the education of their children as they encourage them to grow further and partake in higher education to hone their skills furthermore than the parents did.
The state in Canada has stood for values like equality of opportunity and had laid a strong stress on literacy. This is reflected in Canada’s teachers being some of the most well paid in the world - an observation that sends its competitors running as they just cannot catch up. The schools are well staffed and libraries are well funded. It is safe to say that the low socioeconomic gap within Canada also helps with the cause of education. While France stands at a socio-economic gap ranging at about 20% and Singapore stands at 17%, Canada has a very low socio economic gap rate at just 9%. The consistency that the state is able to maintain across the board is the reason that Canada has successfully outdone other countries in terms of education, and is now looking at the status of an educational superpower.

Being a harbinger of change
Message from the Founder:
As a high school student, I have noticed that the classroom setting is not always the safest place to share ideas and express ourselves as women. Even though it is the 21st century, women still struggle everyday to make their voices heard, to have rights and to be accepted not just as a woman but as a human being. I found myself asking the question, why are we not fostering a safe and inclusive environment where girls (and guys) can come together, and have inclusive discussions bringing awareness to women’s issues within our high school communities. This inspired me to start Girls Can Talk Society!

ecoming a parent is an intense experience that changes the lives of all those who go through it. However, the charm of your exciting and loving relationship may begin to fade in the early days of caring for your infant. In a time like this, a couple that once was always excited and engaging in endless activities will have more responsibilities than ever before and not enough time to meet even half of them. In such a case, how should you avoid relationship issues after welcoming your baby?
1- Sympathize with the partner
Becoming a parent means to go through a profound identity shift for life. This is a stressful time for everyone, just like it was when you were teenagers. Such a time requires patience and kindness. It is important, then, to remember that both of you are going through the same experience but in different ways. You are the ones who understand each other the most in this time which is why your kindness to one another

2- Take out time to spend with each other
Life is always busy, yet it is busier than it has ever been after you have a baby. Couples simply do not get the time to bond with each other anymore because a significant chunk of their time is spent in devotion to the new member of the family. This can alienate couples who were once well acquainted with each other’s daily routine and patterns. Hence, it is crucial to feel like you still know the other person and both of you evolve into your new personalities together.
3- Find healthy ways to communicate through your issues
Resentment can collect for a long time and there may be no seeming way of communicating effectively with one another. One person might feel overworked while the other person may feel left out. At a time like this, however hard it may seem, couples need to express their feelings to each other. This may be by writing each other a letter or simply going out on a proper date to discuss what each person is going through.
4- Engage in simple behaviours before the baby comes Before your bundle of joy arrived, you
probably had certain activities planned that would be time you would relax, unwind, and bond as a couple. For some couples this may be watching Netflix through the night, for others it may be gardening. Regardless of what it may be, it is important to engage in these activities in order to allow yourself to rebond with your partner over things you are both passionate about.
5- Practice parenting on each other to be better parents in the future
Parenting by no means is an easy task. And to be able to do it well with your child as they start to grow older, it is crucial to start practicing the habits of kindness, forgiveness, better listening, more compassion, and others. The best place to start is with your partner because it allows you to be better parents as well as better people, especially to the person who matters the most.
Conclusion
No turn in life comes smooth, most require hard work and perseverance. When it comes to a person you have shared your deepest darkest fears with and come so far as to have a baby, it is worth everything to push through the tough times and bring back the intimacy and affection that signifies your relationship.

For Late M.F. Hussain, Rahat Indori was ‘just the greatest’
R
ahat Indori was five-years-old when the much loved poet Majaz died of a stroke after he was found on the freezing terrace of a country liquor shop in Lucknow’s Qaisar Bagh. As someone born to a poor cloth mill labourer, Rahat’s nightmare of financial insecurity increased watching the economically circumscribed lives of Urdu poets. Majaz was only one of them. Rahat worked hard educating himself right up to PhD on a subject which was to stand him in good stead in subsequent years -- Urdu mushaira. And what a performer he became in mushairas charging up to Rs 10 lakh for an appearance -- quite unprecedented. A brief digression might help explain the phenomenon of Rahat Indori, the Urdu poet who died in his hometown on August 11, at the age of 70. Govind Ballabh Pant, UP’s first Chief Minister and Union Home Minister died on the same day as one of Urdu’s greatest ghazal writers of the 20th century, Jigar Moradabadi. But while Pant made banner headlines in newspapers, Jigar received a single column notice, buried in the inside page.
This is precisely the reason why Rahat’s dominance of the media space following his death is such a phenomenon. Andy Warhol’s observation is succinct: society has reached a point where everybody will have fifteen minutes of fame. But applying this quip to Rahat Indori would be an insult. Rahat had an extraordinary follow-

ing for decades. What will be Rahat’s place in literature? There is a singular lack of endorsement of a large swathe of contemporary Urdu poetry by critics, scholars, connoisseurs and those who have grown in an informed Urdu milieu. Ironically, this turns out to be in inverse proportion to the unprecedented popularity of poets like Rahat.
The danger of feudal patronage drying up was real but mostly in North India. The South remains much the more civilized thanks to such institutionalized treats in dance and music annually as “The Season” in Chennai. In the Hindi belt, just as the feudal patronage tapered off, enlightened business houses like the Bharat Rams, Charat Rams and the Sarabhais stepped in massively. They have now been superseded by the unbelievable explosion of music on the social media. Everything, from the earliest recordings in 1900, is available with the flip of a switch. Compared to music, the graph of Urdu poetry is more complex. After Partition, it was assumed that interest in Urdu would decline. Josh Malihabadi’s dictum that “a language which does not give you bread will die” did operate to the extent that the number of scholars, critics, indeed even university faculties dwindled. A more formal and educated appreciation of poetry was a distinct casualty. Highbrow literature did begin to make way for more popular genres. But Urdu was able to frequently shock those who had written its obituary. Never was this shock more
telling than during the unprecedented success of Jashn-e-Rekhta, a celebration of Urdu in all its forms, an annual carnival which fills up half a dozen venues at New Delhi’s National Stadium day and night for three days. This brainchild of a remarkable cultural entrepreneur, Sanjiv Saraf, is an unparalleled contribution towards uplifting the drooping morale of Urduwallas. Urdu’s demise, in any case, was prematurely predicted after the resilience it had demonstrated in Bollywood in the field of lyrics, diction, dialogues both, their content and delivery. Little wonder, Rahat became a sought after lyricist with music directors like Anu Malik and A.R. Rehman.
Remember how Habib Jalib’s “Main naheen manta” became an iconic song during the anti-citizenship stir? Equally evocative and direct was Rahat’s couplet: “Sabhi ka khoon hai shamil yahan ki mitti mein; Kisi ke baap ka Hindostan thodi hai” (The blood of all of us has mingled in this soil; Hindostan is not the property of anybody’s father)

The reason behind Labour Day celebrations Labour Day in Canada is celebrated on the first Monday of September. It originally gave workers the chance to campaign for better working conditions or pay. The day is now part of a long weekend for many Canadians.
T
he origins of Labour Day can be traced back to April 15, 1872, when the Toronto Trades Assembly organized Canada’s first significant demonstration for worker’s rights. The aim of the demonstration was to release the 24 leaders of the Toronto Typographical Union who were imprisoned for striking to campaign for a nine-hour working day. At this time, trade unions were still illegal and striking was seen as a criminal conspiracy to disrupt trade. In spite of this, the Toronto Trades Assembly was already a significant organization and encouraged workers to form trade unions, mediated in disputes between employers and employees and signaled the mistreatment of workers. There was enormous public support for the parade and the authorities could no longer deny the important role that the trade unions had to play in the emerging

Canadian society. A few months later, a similar parade was organized in Ottawa and passed the house of Canada’s first prime minister, Sir John Macdonald. Later in the day, he appeared before the gathering and promised to repeal all Canadian laws against trade unions. This happened in the same year and eventually led to the founding of the Canadian Labour Congress in 1883. Labour Day was originally celebrated in the spring but it was moved to the fall after 1894. A similar holiday, Labour Day is held on the same day in the United States of America. Canadian trade unions are proud that this holiday was inspired by their efforts to improve workers’ rights. MA 1 is a progressive muscle disease which is caused by a genetic defect transmitted as Autosomal Recessive with incidence of about 1 in 10,000 births. Boys are slightly more affected than girls. Due to genetic defect in SMN 1 ( spinal motor neuron ) there is no signal from spinal cord to nerves hence wasting of muscles. If untreated, it leads to death with respiratory failure.
4 Floppy baby. No reflexes in extremities. 4 Muscle weakness which is progressive. 4 Difficulty achieving developmental milestones, difficulty sitting/standing/ walking. 4 In small children: adopting of a frog-leg position when sitting (hips abducted and knees flexed). 4 Loss of strength of breathing muscles. 4 Weak cry , cannot suck or eat well. 4T ongue twitching or fasiculations.
Cause
Genetic defect at Chromosome 5q13 area which is inherited as Autosomal Recessive
Diagnosis
The most severe manifestation on the SMA spectrum can be noticeable to mothers late in their pregnancy by reduced or absent fetal movements. Symptoms are critical (including respiratory distress
and poor feeding) which usually result in death within weeks, in contrast to the mildest phenotype of SMA (adult-onset),
where muscle weakness may present after decades and progress to the use of a wheelchair but life expectancy is unchanged. The more common clinical manifestations of the SMA spectrum that prompt diagnostic genetic testing: Progressive bilateral muscle weakness (Usually upper arms & legs more so than hands and feet). Flattening of the chest wall when taking a breath and belly protrusion when taking a breath in.
No Reflexes
EMG Electromyogram shows poor signals from spinal cord to muscles. While the above symptoms point towards SMA, the diagnosis can only be confirmed with absolute certainty by blood test to check chromosome defect (Genetic Testing), it takes about 2 months to get this report.
Management
In past only supportive treatment was provided, most children did not survive past their second birthday. CPAP / BIPAP ventilation G Tube feeding. Nutritional Support Few years ago Spirnaza was found to decrease progression of muscle atrophy It is given intrathecal ( in spinal cord area). First dose is about $ 800,000 then every 4 months dose is about $ 350,000 Last year Gene therapy came in to light in America. The medicine is called Zolgensma which is a one time dose given by Intravenous route. The cost is about $ 2.8 Million CAD. So far, it is sill not available in Canada. Parents do fund raising for this treatment currently. Although only a few children have been through this treatment, the results are beneficial. A lot of children did not need ventilation support. It works best if given as early as possible. It does not have benefit after age 2.

erry Fox was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) in his right leg in 1977 and had his leg amputated 15 cm (six inches) above the knee. While in hospital, Terry was so overcome by the suffering of other cancer patients that he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He called his journey the Marathon of Hope.

Terry’s Marathon of Hope took place in 1980 with the simple objective of informing Canadians of the importance of finding a cure for cancer. With fierce determination, he ran an average of 42 kilometres (26 miles) every day for 143 days. Terry was forced to end his run on September 1, 1980 when the cancer spread to his lungs. By February 1, 1981, Terry’s dream of
raising $1 for every Canadian was realized – the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope fund totaled $24.17 million. Terry died in June 1981. Terry Fox is not just a Canadian hero. Countries around the world stage annual events in support of Terry’s dream of finding a cure for cancer. Nearly all monies raised at Terry Fox Runs outside Canada are retained in the host country, funding cancer research projects at recog-
nized research institutions approved by The Terry Fox Foundation on the advice of The Terry Fox Research Institute.

BC Medical Student Sukhmeet Singh Sachal, one of two Canadians from 38 a second year medical student at the University of British Columbia is one of the two Canadians among 38 youth worldwide to have received a funding from the Clinton Foundation to fight the COVID 19 pandemic.
Youth Worldwide to receive a Clinton Foundation Grant
1400 youth from all over the world had applied to the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) COVID 19 Student Action Fund and after much scrutiny, 38 projects were selected. Sukhmeet has committed to implementing public health interventions at Sikh Temples in British Columbia to protect elderly patrons and the general public. The idea is to create awareness amongst the temple devotees especially the elders about the need for taking precautions during this pandemic. This grant will be used to educate the people about the need to wear masks regularly and use proper hygiene to remain safe. In collaboration with some of the Gurdwaras, regular health monitoring will be done and the temple volunteers and staff will be educated to maintain proper health procedures. Working within the CGI U Commitment to

Action model, this fund is geared towards 38 innovative social impact projects addressing the public health, economic, and societal impacts of the novel coronavirus — with commitments ranging from infectious disease monitoring and response systems; social enterprises; awareness and prevention campaigns; and other emergency response initiatives to provide immediate support for public health practitioners and other essential workers on the frontlines. The fund provides $100,000 in total to select students at universities around the world, with each grant awarded ranging up to $5,000. The Action Fund was first announced by President Bill Clinton during the 2020 CGI U At Home virtual event, which featured conversations with national and international government and public health leaders. These projects are made through CGI U’s “Commitment to Action” model, pioneered by President Clinton and the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) in 2005. From 2005 through 2016, more than 3,600 commitments were made through CGI which have
improved the lives of over 435 million people worldwide. In addition to receiving seed funding from the Action Fund for their commitments, all selected students who are new to the CGI U program will receive invitations to participate in CGI U 2021. With a network of 10,000 alumni from more than 1,100 schools, 160 countries, and all 50 states, CGI U students have made more than 7,000 Commitments to Action, positively impacting their hometowns, their college campuses, and communities around the globe. Furthermore, Sukhmeet is working on another project known as ‘Translations 4 Our Nations’ with Harvard Medical Student Victor Lopez-Carmen, University of Toronto Public Health Graduates Thilaxcy Yohathasan and Sterling Kathleen, and youth from around the world to translate COVID-19 information into over 130 local Indigenous languages from across the world. This is in collaboration with the UN Youth Envoy, UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), and the UN Global Indigenous Youth Caucus (GIYC).

KPU Researcher awarded Canada Research Chair in South Asian Literary and Cultural Studies

wantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) researcher Dr. Asma Sayed has been named a Canada Research Chair (CRC) in South Asian literary and cultural studies. This is a Tier 2 Chair position. The CRC Program supports more than 2,200 chairs across Canada in research and studies across a variety of disciplines. This grant will provide $600,000 to support Sayed’s research over the next five years, with KPU co-sponsoring the position. “With three out of five KPU campuses in Surrey, Asma’s focus on South Asian literary and cultural studies is highly relevant to our communities,” says Dr. Deepak Gupta, associate vice president of Research at KPU. As an English faculty member specializing in postcolonial studies, Sayed is one of Canada’s leading researchers in literary narratives of exile and displacement from South Asia and East Africa. She is also versed in feminist literary and cultural studies related to these areas and in Indian cinema, particularly Bollywood (India’s Hindi language film industry). “Being a public intellectual, I think it’s important to address social justice issues,” she says. “I do so through the lens of literary and cultural texts.” In her role as a Canada Research Chair, Sayed will lead projects that include digitally archiving South Asian artistic productions from 1910 to 2010, a period of historic importance concerning the South Asian diaspora in Canada.

She will translate works written by Canadian writers of South Asian origin in their heritage languages, such as Hindi and Gujarati, into English. “I want to make these writers more accessible to Canadians,” said Sayed. “There’s a fair bit of work that’s being done in all these languages in Canada, but it’s not an area much known in mainstream Canadian literature.” Her research projects will include working on a book about South Asian Canadian writers and their artistic contributions to social justice discourse, with a particular focus on issues of race, class and gender. “Dr. Sayed’s focus on South Asian literary and cultural studies, embracing digital humanities, and training students via the research program elucidates and reinforces the Faculty of Arts’ plans to expand academic excellence and community impact, and fosters a research-positive culture within the Faculty of Arts and the broader institution,” says Dr. Diane Purvey, dean in the faculty of arts at KPU. “We are particularly pleased with the opportunities the CRC provides to train students, advance their research skills, and deliver career-broadening opportunities.” “Her work exemplifies impactful, community-engaged research and scholarship,” adds Gupta. “It also expands innovative learning opportunities for our students that enhances their polytechnic university experience.”

Legendary classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj passes away at 90

egendary classical vocalist and Padma Vibhushan recipient Pandit Jasraj passed away on 17 August, in the US at the age of 90. The news was confirmed by his daughter Durga Jasraj. “With profound grief we inform, that Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraj ji breathed his last this morning at 5:15 am EST due to a cardiac arrest, at home in New Jersey, USA. May Lord Krishna welcome him lovingly through the doors of heaven, where Pandit ji will now sing Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya exclusively just for his beloved Lord. We pray that his soul rests in eternal musical peace,” Durga said in a statement. Born in 1930 in Haryana, the celebrated classical singer presented the Mewati Gharana to the global music connoisseur. With a career spanning 80 years, Pandit Jasraj’s oeuvre ranged from the world stage to Indian film music. His rendition of “Raga Ahir Bhairav” was used in Ang Lee’s global hit of

usic mogul Simon Cowell has been hospitalised after breaking his back in an electric bike accident.
Cowell broke his back on August 8, afternoon while test riding his electric bicycle in Malibu, reports hollywoodreporter. com. The English record executive and host of “America’s Got Talent” is being treated in hospital and will have surgery. “Simon had a fall from his bike on Saturday afternoon whilst testing his new electric bike in the courtyard at his house in Malibu with his family,” said a spokesperson for Cowell, adding: “He hurt his back and was taken to the hospital. He’s doing fine, he’s under observation and is in the best possible hands.” In a follow-up statement, the spokesperson said: “Simon has broken his back and will be having surgery.” Source: IANS

Carrey opened up about his admiration for West in an episode of “Real Time with Bill Maher”, reports people.com.

I had learned many new English grammar rules, words and inspiring quotes during my study. I began reading ‘Marvelous English Speaking Course’ and my other English books very diligently. I really fell in love with learning English. My teacher recommended me that I get Cambridge books for IELTS with answers and also study from them. I also began reading English newspapers as we were also taught English in the class from them. I got a kind of busy. However, I was not able to attend my classes regularly for my depression. Baljit’s mom was taking care of me and Nancy so much. After about three months, Meenu got a call from Canada Embassy to appear for an interview. In about two weeks, Baljit also got a call from Canada Embassy. Baljit and I were asked to appear for an interview after three weeks of Meenu’s interview. It was the second marriage of Baljit as well as mine. The embassy was very strict with people marrying a second time and sponsoring them to Canada. They investigated very deeply whether that was a marriage of convenience. Meenu went for her interview and she got immigration visa without

any hitch. I was very happy. A week before our interview, I took Nancy with me and left for India. We reached Amritsar airport at 4 A.M. Baljit, Sunny, Meenu and dad had come to receive us. Dad and Sunny were very happy, especially to see Nancy. Nancy had a very fair complexion. She was roly-poly and looked like a Barbie-doll in her pink frock. I hugged Meenu. “Meenu, How are you, my chirpy sister?”, I asked. “I’m fine. How are you didi? How are all in Canada?”, Meenu asked me with a fake smile. She had changed so much. I wondered where Meenu’s all cheerfulness had gone. Sunny set our luggage in the car. Baljit was on the driver’s seat. Sunny was beside him. Dad, Meenu, Nancy and I were at back seats. What sort of relation I had developed with Meenu! How will the relation move ahead? The second one with Baljit! It was no less than a soap opera or a movie story. How different Bollywood movies are from reality? How beautiful dreams we weave watching those movies! All of a sudden, I felt anxiety and passed out. When I regained consciousness, my dad was sprinkling water on my face. Baljit had pulled over and stopped the car.
“Are you alright, Sonia?”, dad asked me. “Yes, I’m fine. I don’t know what happened, I just felt giddy and fell unconscious.”, I said. “May be, it happened due to change of weather for you.”, Dad said. He gave me a few segments of an orange with salt. I felt better. We reached Ludhiana without stopping at Baljit’s house at Jalandhar. I hugged my mom and we both couldn’t help crying for long. God knows what had happened to us, both of us wept unstoppably for long. Finally dad scolded and asked us to stop that. “Look, our Nancy has come. And Baljit is also here. Just welcome them too.”, Dad said to change the topic. My mom first cleaned my face with her dupatta, and then her own. Mom wanted to hold Nancy but Nancy resisted. And as the virus grows globally, being smart about planning travel, be it domestic or international, and how to protect yourself is crucial.
Here are some helpful guidelines to follow. Do your research
Countries across the world have been updating their travel warnings as the virus continues to spread to regions across the globe. Many counties have declared emergencies and even closed their borders for travel. So, before planning your itinerary, check the health notices and the particular ountry’s travel advisories for any guidance on where – or where not – to visit.
Several airlines and cruise lines have also suspended or altered their service to specific irports and ports of call. Remember to consult h your travel providers to ensure there won’t be changes in service to your destination.
To avoid contact, do not touch shared or potentially germ-ridden surfaces and avoid touching the eyes, nose or mouth before washing your hands. Respiratory illnesses, like coronavirus, generally spreads through contact with an infected person’s saliva or mucus. Droplets from a sneeze or cough can land on surfaces and potentially infect a nearby passenger sharing the enclosed space.

Do not go directly to the hospital, where you may infect other people.

Finally, consider travel insurance when booking your trip. Though most travel insurances only cover outbreaks in specific instances, having insurance coverage with a “Cancel for Any Reason” policy can help save you some money if you need to cancel your itinerary due to medical reasons or another emergency.

honi posted a video montage with pictures at different points of his career along with a caption: “Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired (sic).” The two-time World Cup winning skipper didn’t give details of the development as to whether he is retiring from the game entirely or if he is only bowing out from international cricket. Dhoni is currently part of the Chennai Super Kings training camp at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai and is expected to lead the team in the 2020 season of the Indian Premier League which is set to start on September 19. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan had recently said that the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman would be a part of the franchise, even for the 2021 and 2022 editions of the IPL. Dhoni’s last appearance in the blue jersey came in India’s semi-final defeat to New Zealand at the 2019 World Cup after which he took a break from professional cricket. In this time, Rishabh Pant and later KL Rahul took his place as wicketkeeper of the Indian limited-overs side. Earlier, head coach Ravi Shastri had said that Dhoni’s chances to make it to the Indian team that goes to the 2020 T20 World Cup - originally scheduled to be held in Australia in OctoberNovember this year - would depend on his performance in the IPL. uthor, podcaster and blogger Fred Ferriss has famously said: “Forget New Year’s Resolutions and Conduct a Past Year Review instead.” Inspired by this, Eika Banerjee, a top honcho in the leadership development space, and her husband Siddharth, who operates in the marketing and IT sectors, while sitting amidst the "lush greens of a tiger reserve" on the New Year’s Eve of 2018, decided to take the bull by the horns as it were.
The outcome? “ Red Pills - A New Age Playbook To Become Healthy, Wealthy and Wise”. The authors have been together since reading for their MBAs at FMS-Delhi and are Chevening Scholars at Oxford University.
“When faced with a situation, both of us would always seek to enquire, learn, distil and then act (wisely or unwisely so), rather than wait to get answers from somewhere or to follow an existing paradigm,” the authors write. So, how did they take their journey of self-learning "into the next orbit” By embarking on a “52 Weeks Learning Challenge”, ambitiously penning down a long list of 63 actions or subjects they would cover across the 52 weeks of 2018, encompassing a vast gamut of ideas and themes, from the art of making fine coffee to mind maps, from how billionaires think or how pro-marathoners train, from mindfulness to ‘muay thai’ (kickboxing) and from ancient medicine practices to cutting-edge technology. Youth create a network of safe spaces for domestic abuse survivors “In this time of crisis, we must support those fighting the silent pandemic of domestic abuse happening behind closed doors.” says Vedanshi Vala, Co-Founder and Executive Director of BOLT Safety Society, a youth-run, federallyregistered not-for-profit. “Our new initiative, Safe Hubs, is about taking immediate action to support victims and survivors.” Domestic violence reports have surged astronomically as more people are home, isolated, in alignment with COVID-19 health guidelines. The Safe Hubs project collaborates with local businesses to create a network of safe locations, and is supported with a grant from TakingITGlobal, the Government of Canada, and Canada Service Corps. “Safe Hubs is the start of a community-wide movement to create awareness around the somewhat taboo subject of abuse, rape, and domestic violence. Everyone should be comfortable talking
about these issues, and Safe Hubs is paving the way.” says Ravi Nichols, Co-Founder, Financial and Human Resource Manager at BOLT Safety. Upon the launch of the pilot project on August 31st, Safe Hubs resources will be available for free to members who join BOLT Safety’s mobile platform (boltsafety.org/join). Members will be able to find safe locations on a map, get information on support resources, watch self-defense tutorials from community experts, and connect with their own network of ‘Safe Buddies’. BOLT Safety is continuously working on expanding their network of safe spaces, and currently has confirmed partnerships with the Sabzi Mandi franchise and Apple Farm Market. Interested businesses and community leaders are encouraged to contact BOLT Safety to support the initiative (boltsafety.org). “Safety is our common right, responsibility, and duty. Let’s create safer homes and communities, together.” says Vala.
‘Black Panther’ star Chadwick Boseman dies of cancer at 43

ctor Chadwick Boseman, popular for his role of the superhero Black Panther, is no more. Boseman, 43, had been battling colon cancer since 2016, according to a statement posted on his official Twitter account. The statement read: “It is with immeasurable grief that we confirm the passing of Chadwick Boseman. Chadwick was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016 and battled with it these last four years as it progressed to stage IV.” “A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much. From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more, all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy,” the statement said. “He died in his home, with his wife and family by

his side. The family thanks you for your love and prayers, and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time,” the statement concluded. He is survived by his wife, singer Taylor Simone Ledward. Boseman became a global star playing the titular superhero in the 2018 film, “Black Panther”. He also played the role in “Captain America: Civil War”, “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame”. His last release was Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods”, which opened digitally on Netflix on June 12 this year amid lockdown. Starting his career on television with shows like “Law & Order”, “CSI: NY” and “ER”, Boseman gained prominence with films where he played real-life figures, such as baseball great Jackie Robinson in “ 42”, and soul singer James Brown in “Get On Up”.
