of the way from Hawaii to New Zealand. By flight it is about 4 hours from Sydney or Auckland, and about 10 hours from Los Angeles. Trade between North America and Fiji has been picking up recently with Fiji now exporting close to US$184 million worth of goods into the United States and around US$5 million into Canada. Fiji is actively seeking foreign investment in agricultural and livestock production, dairy, agro-processing, renewable energy, information/communication/technology, manufacturing, infrastructure and various other areas. To attract foreign investment into Fiji, the Fijian government is offering foreign investors a range of investment incentives, including 5-20 years of tax
holiday’s for eligible investments in certain industries. To make it more attractive for foreign investment, Investment Fiji has reduced red tape, by creating a one-stop online investment registration platform, without the investor even leaving their home – and approved or given an answer in 5 days! “Surrey stands at a critical juncture where the right decisions, through foreign and domestic investment, that has and will create economic opportunities for a generation and beyond. This harnesses the ability to bring in international businesses as well as local and national investment opportunities for Surrey. And I think that in Surrey Fijian businesses and Canadian busi-
nesses can focus on the strength and innovation within every entrepreneur to take an idea and use it as the foundation for building a business, locally and globally,” said Dr. Greg Thomas, 1st Vice-Chair and Chair of the Surrey Board of Trade’s International Trade Team. The Surrey Board of Trade has been in Surrey since 1918, businesses and organizations with economic opportunity, workplace development, education, international trade, documentation services government advocacy and business connections. “Customer is king” believes Remo Mastropieri at the Real Canadian Superstore By Surinder Shaun Kochhar
(10)
O
ne does not afford a second chance to create a first impression.
When I met Mr. Remo Mastropieri who is the Store Manager of the Real Canadian Superstore at Marine Drive, Vancouver for the first time, I experienced with alacrity a Canada born 6’ 2” tall Latino, who strikes an aura of an easily approachable executive full of love and life for mankind. As we walked the talk, I found him cool, calm, composed and collected. On being requested to share his professional career he went into a reminiscing mode with an easeful smile on his face and brightness of success in his eyes. He hastened to add that he started his career in 1992 at an age of 24 years as a part time shop floor intern with Loblaws, a thirty one billion dollar company at present with 7 companies in its fold including Superstore, Lowes and Shoppers drug Mart. While explaining his scintillating career growth, he repeatedly reminisced with a sense of satisfaction on his face and hastened to add, “Loblaw- one of the best employers- offers a lot of room to advance in succession and I never thought of leaving this beautiful company”.
Keeping in view his constancy to purpose, loyalty par excellence and honesty of commitment he was suitably rewarded one rung after another on the ladder of a career towards top. At 42, with age on his side and a blotless career spanning over 23 years, a better chair awaits him. The best is yet to happen. Behind every successful man there is a woman as they say. He gives enough credit to his parents, wife and lovely daughters. He is hard working, a karamyogi, an ever-caring father of three, a lovable husband and a successful leader who earns his leadership every day. Success loves the company of a prepared mind and he proves it daily by dint of hard work. Though, in loblaws, he has worked at various places and positions exceptionally well, yet his present stint speaks of his enviable talent. It will not be out of place to mention that he is leading a team of 410 employees, which is not less than a mega corporate establishment. The secret of his enduring success is his firm belief, CUSTOMER IS KING. Second, he loves the flavor of multicultur-
alism in staff as well as customers. He is proud of an efficient multicultural team who works in a spirit of camaraderie. To handle himself he uses his head and to handle others he use his heart. He loves to address the taste a wide multicultural community. Apart from work in his free times he enjoys fishing, playing soccer and engage with the family. He is a great executive who attracts great people and knows how to hold them together. God bless this noble soul to serve the community for many years to come.

“Bajirao Mastani is all consuming and difficult”
Ranveer Singh
A
ctor Ranveer Singh, who is usually active on social media as well as social events of Bollywood, says he has been missing from action as he is “immersed” in bringing alive the “SLB magic” with “Bajirao Mastani”. The “Band Baaja Baaraat” actor essays Maratha warrior Peshwa Bajirao I in the historical drama, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. On the 315th birth anniversary of Peshwa Bajirao I, Ranveer took to Twitter and shared that he is honoured on playing the 18th century character. That apart, he shared “A lot of you are wondering why I’ve been MIA (missing in action) for so long.... it’s because I’ve been completely immersed in ‘Bajirao...’ “It’s difficult and all-consuming... But I must admit, never before have I enjoyed performing this much.” He also extended an invitation to his fans, followers and friends on the social media platform to show support to the movie when it hits the screens on December 18. “You are all cordially invited this December to witness the SLB Magic on the big screen,” added the actor, who shares screen space with actresses Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra in “Bajirao Mastani”. Mastani’s role is essayed by Deepika, while National Award winner Priyanka portrays Kashibai, the first wife of Peshwa Bajirao.

the most anticipated romantic thriller of this season
ational award-winning actress Kangana Ranaut says that despite being a love story, “Katti Batti” unfolds like a thriller that would raise the curiosity of the audience. As part of the film’s promotion, Kangana and actor Imran Khan visited a radio station and interacted with the media. “From the promos, what people are feeling is obviously that it is a modern love story. But it’s much more than that. If you see the film, it unfolds like a thriller though it is basically a love story,” Kangana said. “Girl and boy like always are meeting and falling in love, but the difference is that this girl has suddenly disappeared, the mystery about who is she and where has she disappeared unfolds during the course of the film.” Response to the promos has been extremely positive. “Whoever has seen the film has loved it, Aamir Khan loved it. The aspect that people actually love about the film is the innovative manner of narrating the love story. As far as the songs are concerned, ‘Sarfira’ has already become popular and we have received good response for the film till now,” said Kangana. The story traces the journey of Maddy and Payal spanning their love, live-in relationship and separation over a period of time.
Shah Rukh Khan, Alia Bhatt to star in Gauri Shinde’s next
E
nglish Vinglish fame Gauri Shinde is all set for her next film that will be produced by Karan Johar. And guess who are the lead actors? Gauri has cast romance king Shah Rukh Khan and Highway star Alia Bhatt together in her next. KJo, who will be co-producing the film under his Dharma Productions along with Shah Rukh’s Red Chillies Entertainment and Hope Productions, announced the news on microblogging site Twitter on August 18. “Red Chillies Entertainment... Dharma and Hope Productions are proud to present Gauri Shinde’s next starring... SHAH RUKH KHAN and ALIA BHATT,” Karan tweeted. Shinde’s directorial debut, the 2012 entertainer English Vinglish, which also marked the
comeback of Sridevi onto the big screen, found critical acclaim as well as the audience’s love for telling a poignant tale of a woman who learns English in the quest of ‘fitting in’ the life of her husband and children. This will be Shah Rukh’s first film with Alia. It will be interesting to see the duo star together as while SRK turns 50 in November, Alia is less than half his age. Both the actors have big films in their kitty as of now. SRK has three films -- Raees, Dilwale and Fan -- lined up for release, and Alia, 22, has projects like Shaandaar, Udta Punjab and Kapoor and Sons in her kit-

Anticipated problems with ‘Phantom’ release in Pakistan:
K
Katrina Kaif
atrina Kaif, whose “Phantom” has been banned in Pakistan, says such is the subject of their recently released film that they expected problems in its release in Pakistan. Jamat-ud-Dawah chief Hafiz Saeed has filed a petition in the Lahore High Court seeking a ban on the film’s release in Pakistan, alleging that it contains “filthy propaganda” against his country. “It is logical that Pakistan will have problem with this film. A person is doing wrong and the country is not doing wrong. One of the villains in the film may be from Pakistan but that doesn’t mean Pakistan is a villainous country,” Katrina told PTI in an exclusive interview. “He (Kabir) feels the country has suffered and not that the country is bad. There is a lot of conflict and upheaval between the two coun-
tries so there will be stories on it.” The actress said despite being a fictional take on the 26/11 terror incident but it has got its facts right. “There is a very important track of Pakistan in the film… about someone who is in Pakistan. I think we are not here to preach. We are here to make an amazing story. But it has got its facts and base in right place.” Katrina, 32, said when director Kabir Khan first narrated her the story, she was not sure whether they should go ahead with it. “The moment I heard the story, I told Kabir, ‘Are you sure you want to do this’. But he was passionate about the story… It has an important message and beyond that, it is a fiction film. It is an exciting thriller.” “Phantom” is about the aftermath of 26/11 attacks in Mumbai
and global terrorism. The screenplay of the film has been written in co-ordination with author Hussain Zaidi, and is an adaptation of his book “Mumbai Avengers”. When the 26/11 terror attacks took place, Katrina was shooting for “Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani” at a suburban studio in Mumbai. “I was shooting for ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’ and we were at film city. The information was slowly coming in. A small thing has happened…then it turned out to be a bigger thing and I spent the next three days in shock. I couldn’t believe it,” Katrina said. This is the third time Katrina and Kabir have teamed up after “New York” and “Ek Tha Tiger”. So there is a comfort level and trust between the two.

ctor Akshay Kumar says his forthcoming film “Singh Is Bliing”, in which he plays a Sikh character, is not a sequel to his past movie “Singh Is Kinng”. “You have seen me as a ‘sardaar’ in many films, be it ‘Namastey London’ or ‘Singh Is Kinng’, but it’s (this) not a sequel of ‘Singh Is Kinng’. It is absolutely different from that,” the actor said at the trailer launch of “Singh Is Bliing”. The trailer was launched in mumbai with much fanfare with Akshay making a grand entry on a tractor along with director Prabhudheva and co-star Amy Jackson. Talking about the film, Akshay further said: “It’s a very funny story and has a bit of emotions too. If you all remember, Prabhudheva and I did a film called ‘Rowdy Rathore’. This film belongs to that genre. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed working in it.” Produced by Grazing Goat Pictures, “Singh Is Bliing” also features Kay Kay Menon and Lara Dutta. It is slated to release on October 2.

ARJAN BHULLER Founder & CFO of Kids Play

rjan Singh Bhullar is a Canadian Olympic wrestler. Wrestling has a history in the Bhullar family. Father Avtar was the first to excel in both the traditional Indian style of wrestling (Kushti) and Olympic style wrestling. All 10 Bhullar boys of the family were eventually put through the same rigorous training regimen in the Bhullar “Akhara“ (gym), built on the family farm. Equipment was scarce and sympathy non-existent; while work ethic and a desire to become the best abundant. This was the unofficial beginning for Team Bhullar. He went on to wrestle for wrestling powerhouse Simon Fraser University on a scholarship, while pursuing a degree in Political Science. Simon Fraser allowed Arjan to compete in the Canadian University league (CIS) as well as an American University league (NAIA). Under the tutelage of Coach Justin Abdou and personal coach Nick Ugoalah, Arjan was able to win multiple national titles for Simon Fraser, as well as a Bronze medal at the University World Championships. Arjan was the first wrestler in history to win University national titles for the Canadian (CIS) and American (NAIA) leagues in the same year. Building upon his success at the University level, Arjan was able to have some early success while competing for Canada. He was named Wrestler of the Year in 2009 and followed that up with a dramatic Gold Medal performance in Delhi at the 2010 Commonwealth Games over the hometown hero from India. From the outset, Arjan’s goal was always to become a world champion. That was always the mindset, and the ultimate goal. Wrestling at the 2012 London Olympic Games (as the first ever Indian to represent Canada) in Freestyle Wrestling- the stage was set for the Grand Finale. Unfortunately things did not work out in Arjan’s favour as he lost on technical points to the eventual Bronze Medalist.
Julia Roberts’ marriage in trouble, divorce likely?
P
retty Woman actor Julia Roberts’ 13-year marriage to cinematographer Daniel Moder is allegedly hit a rough patch. The 47-year-old Hollywood actor has been married to Moder since 2002 and the duo has three children together. However, reports suggest Moder has “had enough” of the star, reported OK! magazine. “Danny just doesn’t feel like they have a true partnership. (It’s always) been (Julia’s) way or the highway. (She is) very emotional (and can go from) screaming one minute and then apologising the next. (She) goes off on rant after rant, pointing the finger at Danny at ever opportunity. (He’s) had enough!,” a source said. The couple has three children together -- Hazel Patricia, Phinnaeus Walter and Henry. And Roberts has had a tough two years after losing her half-sister Nancy and mother Betty. “(She’s) suffered an emotional collapse. She was already reeling from her mom’s cancer crisis. Now, she’s been deeply hurt and stung by all the criticism after Nancy’s death and feels she doesn’t deserve it. Julia insists that Nancy’s death was not a suicide.” Roberts has a $225 million dollar fortune and may have to fork over a huge amount in case of a divorce settlement. The couple has reportedly put two of their homes on the market, a six-bedroom compound in Hawaii and a West Village pad, possibly in preparation of a settlement.

Music is really a uniting force: Zac Efron
ctor Zac Efron, who features as a disc jockey (DJ) in romantic comedy “We Are Your Friends”, says music is a uniting force and a DJ is the person who is at the helm of that. The 27-year-old, who rose to fame after the “High School Musical” series, will be featuring as a 23-year-old DJ Cole in the film. His character finds his way in the world through nightclubs as an aspiring DJ. Talking about it, he said: “Cole is starting to realise that he’s not truly himself when he’s around his friends, He’s got their unconditional love, but he’s not following his heart. “It’s when he’s behind the decks that a sense of freedom and purity comes out, when he feels at one with everyone around him. Music is really a uniting force and a DJ is the person who is at the helm of that, which is really cool,” Efron said in a statement. “We Are Your Friends” was released across USA and Canada on August 28,2015.

ctress Courteney Cox, who is engaged to Snow Patrol rocker Johnny McDaid, says she is in no rush to get married. The couple got engaged last June and the only factor which is making them consider tying the knot sooner rather than later, is pressure from Coco, who is Cox’s daughter with former husband David Arquette. “Johnny and I are still in the planning stages, although Coco seems to want to be wedding planner and has taken over. We’re in no rush but we’d like to do it some time soon... more for Coco who can’t wait to be a bridesmaid,” said Cox. “We don’t have any plans at the moment. We don’t have any firm decisions yet. But it’s fun thinking about it and figuring out what to do and when to do it. I’m having fun with that,” she added. eral hundred feet, his teenage self is as hefty as Hercules; swinging from vines so as to climb the waterfall his village sits under, he’s as romantic a figure as Tarzan. The film, like its hero, keeps flexing its muscles; Rajamouli clearly asked “What can’t we do with this cash?” You want to
see a man wrestling a bull with his bare hands? You got it. Two lovers fleeing an avalanche on a rock? Check. A hero swatting 10,000 arrows using his sword alone? Why not. N e w frontiers unfo l d before our eyes: one moment we’re w i t nessing mildly risqué canoodling in a forest of orchids, the next prowling the streets of a fortified city where hundreds of flogged and flogging extras have been charged with erecting a towering golden statue. (Again with the Moses comparisons.) The final 45 min-
utes roam a vast battlefield that, with its human shields and B o a d i c e a - st y l e murder chariots, makes Helms Deep resemble a punchup in a chip shop. At each turn, the money’s right there on screen, yet what’s most striking is how these resources have been m a r -
shalled – to enhance, rather than clutter up, the narrative through line. In this, Baahubali demonstrates the pleasing, straight-ahead simplicity of certain videogames: whenever our hero accomplishes a task, some new challenge presents itself. Upon scaling that waterfall, the adult Baahubali (the genial, moustachioed Prabhas) finds he’s strayed into a civil war; only with a glimpse of warrior princess Avanthika (Tamannaah Bhatia) does he sense which side to pick. Their slyly feminist pairing makes some headway, yet that last-act battle forms part of an extended flashback that reveals the full extent of the dynastic tangle they’ve charged into. (The decision to split one epic into two films here makes narrative and economic sense: this mess will require some cleaning up.) Throughout, Rajamouli strikes a nearperfect balance between physicality and poetics. That waterfall becomes both mirror and measure of personal growth; one lingering slo-mo shot of a warrior’s chainmail in motion would stir a Zhang Yimou or Wong Kar-wai into renewed action. It’s merely cute when Baahubali plunges into a lake to paint the hand the dozing Avanthika has let slip into the waters, yet the action has a lovely pay-off: this impromptu tattoo is seen to complete one on the hero’s bicep during a later embrace. Unlike the committee scripting of, say, The Scorpion King, a lot of Baahubalia appears to have been written in the stars. And that’s finally the film’s appeal: it’s a throwback, the kind of peppy serial that would have graced the multiplex in the days before product-placement, billion-dollar PR campaigns and obligation 3D, when the sole components required for a blockbuster were a hero, a villain, a few fights, a few songs, and a happy ending. Rajamouli defers on the latter for now, but his skilful choreography of these elements shucks off any cynicism one might carry into Screen 1: wide-eyed and wondrous, his film could be a blockbuster reboot, or the first blockbuster ever made, a reinvigoration of archetypes that is always entertaining, and often thrilling, to behold. Roll on 2016.

N
itin Mukesh had been saying it in his recorded messages & interviews and after a 5 hour long performance at Surrey’s Bell Centre on Sunday, August 9, it’s safe to say that he stole the hearts & souls of Vancouver’s music loving audience. ‘Remembering Mukesh with Nitin Mukesh’ will remain etched in their memories for a very long time. Nitin, Manasi and the other musicians performed brilliantly forcing many to term the concert as “the finest music concert of their life”. Nitin made people cry, laugh, sing and dance to the evergreen melodies of his illustrious father Mukesh Ji. He received a standing ovation at the end of the event which is a proof of his magical charm with Vancouver’s audience, who continued to throng his performances and remained glued to their seats for over 5 hours. Nanak’s Angoori Gulabjamun were served throughout the performance and the evening was a bit more melodious when Kamal Sharma of KVP Entertainers & Kamal’s Video Palace announced $ 1 from the sale of every ticket going to St. Paul’s Hospital . It certainly was an evening to remember.

Most Common Transmission Problems
Nitin Mukesh
SORIN
PAV MAHAL
etermining what problem(s) your car has may seem like an impossible task, especially to the untrained eyes and ears of the average driver. It may be helpful to think of your car’s inner workings as similar to that of the human body. For instance, if you have chest pain that could point toward any number of health issues, but if the chest pain exists in addition to difficulty breathing, then it is much more likely that asthma (or something very similar) is the cause. Automotive problems are diagnosed in a similar manner. Problems that involve mechanical systems typically exhibit distinct sensations and sounds that act as indicators that a certain process isn’t working the way it is intended to. As soon as you recognize that something seems a bit “off” with your vehicle’s functionality, it is time to assess the issue and look for a way to fix it. Diagnosing car problems yourself may seem like an impossible task, but try to think of it in terms of your own body. For instance, if your stomach begins to hurt without warning, you’ll probably start thinking of the last thing you ate in order to figure out why you’re having the pain. A similar type of thinking goes into diagnosing car trouble. The moment you start noticing something out of the ordinary, it’s time to start considering the problem and finding a way to fix it. Automatic Transmission Cut AwayYour car’s transmission is a complex mechanical system that controls the application of power from the engine to the driveshaft. It experiences more wear and tear over time than most other parts of your vehicle due to the heat and friction produced by their many moving and interacting components. Major issues are bound to arise if your transmission is not well maintained and/or symptoms of a problem are not checked by a professional soon after they develop. Transmission repairs or replacements are inconvenient, stressful and typically quite expensive, so it’s a good idea to pay attention to any activity that seems unusual. Adhering to the recommended maintenance procedures and schedule intended to prevent problems will help your transmission last longer, perform better and require fewer repairs over its lifespan. That said, if you’re having some car trouble, it is important to
sounds that can be described as being slightly more mechanical, louder and abrupt sounding. A clunking sounds when you shift gears almost always lies within a transmission, while constant velocity joins or the differential may be the source if the clunking is coming from the underside of your car. As mentioned already, it is always best to get the problem diagnosed and repaired as soon as possible and not wait until later when you “find the time” or “have the money”. If you wait until later what would have been a relatively inexpensive repair can easily become a much more costly one.

know what the most common types of transmission problems are so that you can easily diagnose them and get them fixed. Here is a list of symptoms of transmission trouble and what signs you should look for.
Lack of Response Ever notice that while driving that the car hesitates or refuses to go into gear? If you have, then there is definitely something wrong. The moment a driver shifts from park to drive the car should immediately go into the proper gear. For automatic transmissions, you might notice that when shifting into drive or park that there is a delay before you feel the gear engage. This is usually a transmissionbased concern. Manual transmissions can have the same lacking response issue, but after shifting into gear the engine’s RPMs will surge, but the car won’t move as fast as the engine sounds like it’s going. This is usually caused by a clutch that needs to be replaced, but may sometimes point to a more severe problem.
Whining, Clunking and Humming It’s impossible to say exactly what your car will sound like when there is trouble with your transmission, but one thing is for sure, you’ll get a “I haven’t heard that sound before” feeling when you notice it. The sounds that are produced vary widely between different makes and models, but the best way to describe them is that you’ll probably hear a humming, buzzing or whining noise. Manual transmissions will emit

2015 INFINITI Q50 3.7 AWD Limited Edition I

Q50
By Trevor Hofmann
nfiniti replaced its much loved and much lauded G37 with the all-new Q50 in late 2013 as a 2014 model, and we covered a number of trim levels. The first one I drove and reviewed was a Q50 Hybrid, while my colleague followed that one up with a Q50 AWD Premium and I followed him up with a different slant on the same car. It took us until February of this year to get my 2015 Q50 3.7 AWD review published, and here we are again with a very nicely equipped 2015 Q50 3.7 AWD Limited Edition. In case you’re curious, Infiniti’s Canadian division offers the conventionally powered Q50 in five trim levels for 2015, last year’s Premium designation now off the menu and my latest tester’s Limited trim on. The rundown is as follows: Q50 3.7, Q50 3.7 AWD, Q50 3.7 Limited, Q50 3.7 AWD Sport, and Q50 3.7 Sport, while the Q50 Hybrid AWD can only be had in one well-equipped so-named model. Of course, Infiniti shoots back with some innovative technology of its own, and not just copycat systems developed and engineered by Japanese hybrid producers. The Q50, as tested, is the only car in the world to offer Direct Adaptive Steering, a steerby-wire system with no direct mechanical connection between steering wheel and tires. Infiniti took more than a decade to develop DAS and believe me it shows. It has the ability to react much quicker to steering wheel input than a conventional hydraulic- or electric-powered rack and pinion steering setup, specifically responding to what you’re doing rather than the other way around. In a nutshell, an ECU reads the amount of turn-in you’re adding to the steering wheel after which it calculates and provides the appropriate info to the steering motors. Steering feedback, which is no longer physically connected, is instead defined by an electronic control unit, as well as a camera and processing module, all determining the amount of resistance to add back to the steering wheel through a steering force actuator unit. The advantage is the system’s ability to electronically modify the steering ratio and feedback without mechanical revisions, some of that ability right at your fingertips. A chrome-detailed toggle switch on the lower console lets you flick through its Quick, Standard, and Casual ratios, all designed to match a driver’s varying moods, and they really do make a difference. I should mention here that DAS in the 2015 model I drove earlier this year and in this Limited trimmed Q50 felt better than it did last year, much to do with a number of modifications made to steering and suspension tuning in all 2015 Q50 models, increasing the feel and responsiveness of the hydraulic steering system in base models
and adding more feedback from the upgraded DAS setup, so that now it feels much better at high speeds and more natural through fast-paced corners. By the way, if you find the idea of direct steering a bit disconcerting, some relief should come in the knowledge that Infiniti has your back with a failsafe mechanical backup system that will take over within milliseconds if DAS were to have a meltdown. After more than 10 years of development it’s no doubt a safe and sound system, and I certainly never had any problems in any of the four DAS-equipped Q50s I’ve tested. All were extremely responsive to input when the Drive Mode toggle was flicked to its Quick setting, this latest 2015 model unbelievably reactive, making the Q50 feel like a much smaller, lighter car than it is, while cornering grip is shockingly good. I must admit, however, that Casual mode remains much too (yawn) relaxed for the way I prefer to drive, but I can appreciate that some Q50 owners will like it. When you factor in standard equipment the Infiniti star (or rather its never-ending road logo) starts to shine ever brighter, with the base rear-drive model receiving proximity sensing Intelligent Key access with pushbutton ignition, a tilt and telescopic leather-wrapped three-spoke heatable multifunction steering wheel, a leatherwrapped shift knob with aluminum accent, Fine Vision electroluminescent gauges, a multi-function trip computer with fuel range and outside temperature display, Infiniti InTouch dual-display infotainment system (with an LCD/VGA eight-inch upper screen and seven-inch colour vehicle-information lower display) that integrates a rearview monitor, six-speaker audio with high definition AM/FM radio, satellite radio, CD/MP3 capability, RDS and speed-sensitive volume, two USB ports and an aux plug, Bluetooth
hands-free, cruise control, speed-sensitive flat-blade variable intermittent wipers, dual-zone automatic climate control, eightway powered front seats (the driver’s with adjustable lumbar support), leatherette upholstery, a powered moonroof, aluminum front doorsill kick plates featuring the Infiniti logo, automatic on/off LED headlights with integrated DRLs, front LED fog lamps, LED brake lights, LED turn signals integrated within the housings of the power heatable side mirrors, Infiniti’s amazing self-healing Scratch Shield paint, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, electronic brake-force distribution, emergency brake assist, stability and traction control, plus the usual assortment of airbags. Do the same with the Germans and they’ll come up a bit short. DAS comes as part of the $4,300 Deluxe Touring and Technology package, incidentally, which also includes a power tilt and telescopic steering column that can be automatically adjusted via the dual occupant memory system that also sets the driver’s seat and mirrors, plus gorgeous maple hardwood inlays, auto-dimming exterior mirrors with reverse tilt-down, rain-sensing wipers, an advanced Plasmacluster climate control system, adaptive headlights with high-beam assist, intelligent cruise control with fullspeed range and distance control assist, an AroundView monitor with moving object detection, front and rear sonar, blind-spot warning and intervention, back-up collision intervention, an advanced predictive forward collision warning system with forward emergency braking that as you may have seen on Infiniti’s TV ads automatically reacts to the vehicle braking in front of the vehicle you’re following, lane departure warning and prevention with active lane control,
front pre-crash seatbelts, and an Eco pedal system that, if engaged, will press back on the throttle if you’re trying to accelerate too quickly in order to remind you to go lighter on the environment. This package also includes 60/40 split-folding rear seatbacks with a centre armrest pass-through. I’ve gone over the base model’s features and the Deluxe Touring and Technology package upgrades, so I’d be remiss if I didn’t cover the extras that come with AWD Limited Edition trim. Most obvious, the Limited gets a stunning set of 19-inch triple five-spoke alloy rims that are worth the price of admission alone, riding on 245/40R19 Dunlop SP Sport 5000 DSST CTT all-season run-flat performance tires that provide an asymmetrical tread pattern for strong grip on wet or dry surfaces, plus a unique rear spoiler that adds to this Q50’s sportier look. Additional kit includes leather upholstery, heatable front seats, Infiniti’s InTouch navigation system with touchscreen lane guidance and 3D building graphics, Nav Traffic, a one-year subscription to Infiniti Connection that allows automatic collision notification, drive zone monitoring and destination assistance, not to mention smartphone connectivity to the infotainment system’s various functions, a 14-speaker Infiniti Studio on Wheels by Bose audio upgrade with satellite radio, and more. The Q50 is not only a supremely comfortable and accommodating luxury sedan with impressive performance credentials, it’s also the best value in the small premium sedan segment. week after banning the #goddess, photo-sharing app Instagram has now prohibited the popular #EDM, a common abbreviation for electronic dance music because users apparently violated “guidelines around nudity”, a media report said. The tag was blocked because it was being used to share racy photos that fly in the face of Instagram’s high moral standards, a company spokesperson said. “We block (make unsearchable)
certain hashtags when they are consistently being used to share images and videos that violate our community guidelines,” Thump, the electronic music and culture channel from Vice, quoted the spokesperson as saying. It is feared that some users probably were cashing in on the popularity of the #EDM to sell more viagra pills and penis pumps. Earlier this month, the company
also attracted controversy when it ousted the #curvy hashtag. It later restored the hashtag after users criticised the company for banning it. Instagram had earlier come under fire for banning a photo of a fully clothed woman whose menstrual blood showed through her sweatpants.

he Indian women’s recurve team squandered a two-set lead, going down to the topseeded Russians in the shootoff to bag a silver medal at the World Archery Championships in early August. The trio of Deepika Kumari, Laxmirani Majhi and Rimil Buriuly put pressure on the Russians opening up a 4-0 lead but could not wrap the issue as they lost the next two sets before going down in the shoot-off 27-28. India thus picked their second silver in the ongoing World Archery Championships where compound archer Rajat Chauhan opened the account with a historic individual medal. This is India’s best ever show in the World Archery Championships, where they are in the hunt for a third medal, and a double for Majhi, who will fight for a bronze in the individual re-
curve section later in the day. Having grabbed an Olympic quota place for India in the women’s section, the second-seeded Indian eves kept shuffling their order with former world number one Kumari either shooting first or last after her teammates Buriuly and Majhi as the Russians slowly recovered
from a slow start. The trio of Tuyana Dashidorzhieva, Ksenia Perova and Inna Stepanova had a series of 9s against India’s three perfect 10s and one closest to the centre (X) to trail 54-56. The Indians maintained their lead to wrap the second set 4-0 but failed to wrap the issue in the
third as Majhi and Buriuly shot seven each. Buriuly bounced back shooting a X while Kumari, shooting last, had a perfect 10 but it was not enough as they lost the third set by two points. Under pressure in the fourth set, Kumari started the proceedings with a 9 in the first end only to be let down by Majhi and Buriuly again as they shot a poor 7 and 6 in the fourth and fifth ends respectively. Kumari once again shot a perfect 10 to end the sixth end and the fourth set but only to lose by four points as the Russians made a spirited comeback to level 4-4 to take the summit clash to the shoot-off. In the ensuing shoot-off, Dashidorzhieva made a perfect 10 which was matched by Majhi while in the second end Perova shot 9 while Buriuly faltered again with an 8 to put pressure on Kumari again.

Delhi-based Jannat Mehra, who manages her label under J By Jannat name, lists out easy ways to help you turn up as a style diva: Let go of Indian ethnic: Beach weddings are more of a western affair thus making gota-patti, anarkali and lehengas seem out of order. Instead, opt for contemporary Indian wear, like simple fullskirted lehengas, elegant gowns, dhoti pants with a shirt style blouse. Go for prints: A solid botanical print is an exquisite way to brighten any beachfront affair. Big ‘no’ for heels: Heels and stilettos on the beach will act as a hindrance to enjoy the sunset and the beach. Also, the chances are that they are likely to get spoilt in the sand. These should be avoided so the obvious choice should be to stick to flats, chappals and thong slippers. The idea is to travel light and heavy velvets and embellishments act as a deterrent in travelling light. Also, these do not

Experience extreme fatigue? E Arvin Dhillon You maybe suffering from A IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA
PART 1
The upcoming dance sensation -
Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji
Specialist in Pediatrics
As the name implies, iron deficiency anemia is due to insufficient iron. Without enough iron, your body can’t produce enough of a substance in red blood cells that enables them to carry oxygen (hemoglobin). As a result, iron deficiency anemia may leave you tired and short of breath. Symptoms Initially, iron deficiency anemia can be so mild that it goes unnoticed. But as the body becomes more deficient in iron and anemia worsens, the signs and symptoms intensify. Iron deficiency anemia symptoms may include extreme fatigue, pale skin, weakness, shortness of breath, chest pain, frequent infections, headache, dizziness or lightheadedness, cold hands and feet, inflam-
mation or soreness of your tongue, brittle nails, fast heartbeat, unusual cravings for non-nutritive substances such as ice, dirt or starch, poor appetite, especially in infants and children with iron deficiency anemia and an uncomfortable tingling or crawling feeling in your legs (restless legs syndrome). Causes Iron deficiency anemia occurs when your body doesn’t have enough iron to produce hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the part of red blood cells that gives blood its red color and enables the red blood cells to carry oxygenated blood throughout your body. If you aren’t consuming enough iron, or if you’re losing too much iron, your body can’t produce enough hemoglobin, and iron deficiency anemia will eventually develop. Causes of iron deficiency anemia include: • Blood loss: Blood contains iron within red blood cells. So if you lose blood, you lose some iron.
Women with heavy periods are at risk of iron deficiency anemia because they lose blood during menstruation. Slow, chronic blood loss within the body — such as from a peptic ulcer, a hiatus hernia, a colon polyp or colorectal cancer — can cause iron deficiency anemia. Gastrointestinal bleeding can result from regular use of some over-thecounter pain relievers, especially aspirin.
from breast milk or formula may be at risk of iron deficiency. Children need extra iron during growth spurts. If your child isn’t eating a healthy, varied diet, he or she may be at risk of anemia.
• A lack of iron in your diet: Your body regularly gets iron from the foods you eat. If you consume too little iron, over time your body can become iron deficient. Examples of iron-rich foods include meat, eggs, leafy green vegetables and iron-fortified foods. For proper growth and development, infants and children need iron from their diet, too.
• Frequent blood donors: People who routinely donate blood may have an increased risk of iron deficiency anemia since blood donation can deplete iron stores. Low hemoglobin related to blood donation may be a temporary problem remedied by eating more iron-rich foods. If you’re told that you can’t donate blood because of low hemoglobin, ask your doctor whether you should be concerned.
• An inability to absorb iron: Iron from food is absorbed into your bloodstream in your small intestine. An intestinal disorder, such as celiac disease, which affects your intestine’s ability to absorb nutrients from digested food, can lead to iron deficiency anemia. If part of your small intestine has been bypassed or removed surgically, that may affect your ability to absorb iron and other nutrients. • Pregnancy: Without iron supplementation, iron deficiency anemia occurs in many pregnant women because their iron stores need to serve their own increased blood volume as well as be a source of hemoglobin for the growing fetus. Risk Factors These groups of people may have an increased risk of iron deficiency anemia: • Women: Because women lose blood during menstruation, women in general are at greater risk of iron deficiency anemia. • Infants and children: Infants, especially those who were low birth weight or born prematurely, who don’t get enough iron
• Vegetarians: People who don’t eat meat may have a greater risk of iron deficiency anemia if they don’t eat other iron-rich foods.
Complications Mild iron deficiency anemia usually doesn’t cause complications. However, left untreated, iron deficiency anemia can become severe and lead to health problems, including the following: • Heart problems: Iron deficiency anemia may lead to a rapid or irregular heartbeat. Your heart must pump more blood to compensate for the lack of oxygen carried in your blood when you’re anemic. This can lead to an enlarged heart or heart failure. • Problems during pregnancy: In pregnant women, severe iron deficiency anemia has been linked to premature births and low birth weight babies. But the condition is preventable in pregnant women who receive iron supplements as part of their prenatal care. • Growth problems: In infants and children, severe iron deficiency can lead to anemia as well as delayed growth and development. Additionally, iron deficiency anemia is associated with an increased susceptibility to infections.

Cure common cold while relishing hot flavoursome Jalebis
M
any of us must have heard our grandparents and parents who always used to say nothing cures a cold better than a couple of hot Jalebis, washed down with a glass of warm milk? That’s right. Hot, syrupy Jalebis are definitely favourite way of keeping warm in the winter and getting rid off the common cold too. But despite it being a hot favourite among the North Indians, the Jalebi’s origins can be traced to Iran and Persia, where it is called Zulbiya. It is made by deep-frying batter in a pretzel shape and then soaked in sugar syrup. The Jalebi is also very popular in Pakistan and Bangladesh, where it’s got a Bengali name - Jilapi. A very similar sweet is also very popular in the middleeast. It’s called Zangoola there. But, if you’re in Nepal, you’ve got to ask for Jeri (named after the Mughal emperor Jahangir), if you get Jalebi cravings. In India, though, Jangiri - a much-favoured Jalebi-like sweet down South (called Emarti up North), is the closest that the Jalebi comes to being named after emperor Jahangir, who brought it to India. The ultimate Jalebi is crisp on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside and has to be had with Rabri - a sweet, slightly thick in consistency, made by boiling milk for long hours. So, go have a helping of Rabri-Jalebi from your fa-

he Flying Gora Dhaba is a food stall that has been turning heads and pleasing taste buds at this year’s Surrey Night Market. Selling Indian inspired street food, the stall’s name is a playful reflection of the couple who run it. When John Gattey, a veteran of the Vancouver restaurant scene and the stall’s ‘gora’, met Kendra Sidhoo,
he began to teach himself to cook some classic Indian dishes in an effort to learn more about her background and culture. They are happily married now, and to the rest of our benefit, they are also making some amazing food. With Kendra’s help, John has been impressing everyone with his authentic Indian flavours. John serves up classics like Chole
Bhature (with bhature as big as your head!) and Kheer that will bring back memories of your bibi. He also mixes it up with dishes like Curried Fried Chicken, a plate of crispy fried drumsticks tossed in his own signature spicy tomato curry, topped with toasted almonds and a cooling raita. Move over lehengas, anarkalis and try the latest
fashion fad!
Twirling lehengas and floor-sweeping anarkalis continue to attract would-be brides. But the dhoti skirt, a silhouette that reflects both the traditional and contemporary aesthetics, is also becoming a hot favourite this wedding season in India, especially for pre-wedding celebrations, say designers. By Natalia Ningthoujam
A
dhoti is typically worn by Indian men, and over the years, designers have fused it with western silhouettes to bring out the now globally popular dhoti pants. A dhoti skirt, for women, is an interpretation which has found prominence of late. Ace Indian designer Anita Dongre has launched her latest bridal collection, ‘The Wedding Diaries’; an album of memories of the modern-day bride. While the bespoke bridal couture looks feature lehengas, gowns and anarkalis, there is also a pink dhoti skirt to be paired with a bandi. “A dhoti skirt is a fresh approach to classic skirts with its draped silhouette. This traditional yet funky option is extremely versatile and can be worn with a short tunic, crop top, bandi or even a trendy asymmetrical jacket,” Dongre told in an interview. National Award-winning costume designer and stylist Niharika Khan also agrees that people are “willing to experiment”, and that dhoti skirt is a good option. “You can style it with a cape or jacket. You can wear it with a chunni on top and a choli. There’s a lot of fun and play you can have and still look feminine in it,” said Khan, who designed costumes for Yash Raj Films’ “Band Baaja Baaraat”. Fashion designer Anju Modi believes that nowadays unisex concepts in fashion are gaining ground and dhoti skirts “too fall in this bracket”. “It is a silhouette that reflects both the traditional and contemporary aesthetics. It’s sexy, comfortable ... and I feel that it is the personality that should be better matched to pull off such a strong and standout look,” added the designer,
who has worked on the costumes for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Bajirao Mastani”. “On a lighter note, till now it’s all about who is wearing the pants in the house, but it will now also be who is wearing the dhoti,” she quipped. According to Modi, any woman with a “confident demeanour would easily slip into the dhoti skirts, irrespective of the region or the profession”. Anaita Shroff Adajania, fashion director, Vogue India, has also given thumbs up to the trend. As the designers have given the green signal to the look, even some young would-be brides are happy to incorporate it in their wedding ceremonies, as indicated by a random survey. Ranjita Singh, 24, said “Wearing dupattas can be annoying at times, so a dhoti skirt with a traditional top is fun and goes well with the wedding ceremonies. Maybe not on the wedding day, but on sangeet or mehendi day or pre-wedding parties would be fun.” Another bride-tobe, Leena Manchanda, 28, said she found Sonam Kapoor’s dhoti look in “Abhitoh party shuru hui hai” song from “Khoobsurat” suitable if someone wanted to make a unique style statement at an event, when all eyes would be on you.

Show off your vintage glam in style From a winter old-school textile, the vintage pattern of houndstooth (pointy-shaped checks) has now become a favourite. From designers to celebrities, the nifty design that was once primarily used for trench coats, blazers and winter dresses, is now making its presence felt in other seasons as well.
W
hile this pattern, which originated in Scotland, looks classic in black and white, other variations, like black on red, black on beige, and beige on white for a softer look, are also being explored now. In fact, washed yellow on light grey and red on white also work wonders. And if one wishes to keep it simple, then black and white teamed with colour highlights will do the trick. On the other hand, even though traditionally, houndstooth is woven in wool, it is now being used in fabrics such as chiffon, georgette, crepe, mulmul, linen, and cotton, among others. “It will also look great as a lightweight stole, and can be paired with a plain tee. Even houndstooth print canvas shoes, paired with plain trousers look extremely cool,” says designer Sougat Paul. English model Cara Delevingne rocked the pattern in a short skirt. Instead of its classic monochromatic version, the 22-year-old mixed it with colours like yellow and brown, which actually gives surprisingly alluring results. Men can also experiment with this pattern to raise their sartorial tempo. From prints on shorts, to T-shirts, houndstooth is pretty unisex in its approach. Kareena Kapoor Khan recently attended a promotional event in a houndstooth high-neck top. Since it was sleeveless, it gave a sense of summer wear. She paired it with a black midi, and the result was a nifty ensemble. American actor Olivia Wilde sticks to the classic version of the pattern. She opted for a houndstooth jacket and paired it with a shirt dress for a vintage appeal. If you wish to flaunt this trend, here are some ways you can incorporate houndstooth in your ensemble: Wear your style = Asymmetric chiffon tunic with houndstooth print, paired with narrow cotton black trousers or cotton-knit leggings. = A sleeveless houndstooth printed top with a white linen jacket and white linen cropped trousers. = A white tee or georgette ruffle top with pencil houndstooth trousers. = A houndstooth georgette shift dress with a white linen peplum jacket. = A houndstooth printed chiffon saree with a solid-coloured blouse. = Houndstooth shorts with a basic white tee. = A waistcoat in houndstooth print, paired with a pair of denim and white shirt.
Dos and Don’ts
= Don’t overdo the print. Balance it out with a solid coordinate so that it is does not overpower the look. = Don’t accessorise too much. You can wear a pair of earrings and a small wristlet that will not attract too much attention.

Hire A Top Listing Agent When Selling A Home For The First Time Part 1
Before you sell your home for the first time, make sure you check out some of the most important first time home seller tips and tricks below. Rahul Gill
Real Estate Expert
B
y following these tips and tricks, you will put yourself in a much better position to sell your first home and will make the home selling process seem rather easy! Prepare Your Home For The Market One of the biggest mistakes made by first time home sellers is that they do
not know how to or understand how important it is to prepare a home for the open real estate market. Before selling a home for the first time, it’s important you realize how important it is to make sure your home is show-ready as soon as it’s listed for sale. One of the biggest suggestions for any first time home seller is having a home inspection completed before the house is listed for sale. The likelihood that a home buyer will decide to have a home inspection is very strong. Today’s home buyers are scared away from homes relatively easily and correcting problems that an inspector finds before listing your home for sale
can greatly decrease the chance that a deal may fall apart due to a buyer getting scared off. Another excellent way for a first time home seller to prepare their home for the market is by making low-cost home improvements before listing the home for sale. Just a few of the most popular low-cost home improvements to consider making before selling your home for the first time include; • Freshly painting rooms • Professionally cleaning floors and/or carpeting • Replacing outdated light fixtures • Replacing outdated hardware on cabinetry It’s important that first time home sellers understand the importance of making a great first impression on potential home buyers. By not properly preparing a home for sale, a first time home seller could potentially be costing themselves thousands of dollars and also valuable time, in the event their home takes longer to sell. First time home sellers need to understand the importance of having a top producer representing them during the sale of their home. Selling a home is not an easy task, so don’t attempt to sell your home by owner. For sale by owners, also known as FSBOs, have a failure rate of 85%-95% . In any given real estate market, there can be several hundred to several thousand real estate agents who have the ability to sell a home. It’s important that first time home sellers understand that not all real estate agents are the equal. Even real estate agents within the same company are not equal. Some real estate agents are part time real estate agents, some are primarily buyers agents, and other agents may only have had their real estate license for a month or two. How can a first time home seller ensure they hire a top producing listing agent? It’s actually a fairly simple answer, you know how to properly interview real re-
state agents. A first time home seller who knows how to properly interview prospective real estate agents will have a much greater chance that they hire a top producer and not a dud. It’s important that first time home sellers don’t always assume that the real estate agent who sold them their home is capable of selling the home. There are several things that home sellers should expect from their real estate agent when selling their home. Some of the things a top producing listing agent will provide to a seller may not be able to be provided by the buyers agent who sold them their current home, such as a comprehensive marketing plan. Understand Your Local Real Estate Market Real estate markets can vary significantly from one neighborhood to another. First time home sellers need to understand what the current state is of their local real estate market. Generally speaking there are three “states” of a real estate market, a sellers market, a buyers market, and a balanced market.

Silicon in beer may prevent osteoporosis
B
eer is a significant source of dietary silicon, a key ingredient for increasing bone mineral density, and hence a moderate consumption may help fight osteoporosis. Food science and technology researchers from the University of California-Davis (UC-D) sought to determine the link between beer production methods and the resulting silicon content, concluding that beer is a rich source of dietary silicon. Based on these findings, some studies suggest moderate beer consumption may help fight osteoporosis, a disease of the skeletal system characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue. “The factors in brewing that influence silicon levels in beer have not been extensively studied,” said UC-D’s Charles Bamforth, who led the study. “We have examined a wide range of beer styles for their silicon content and have also studied the impact of raw materials and the brewing process on the quantities of silicon that enter wort and beer.” Silicon is present in beer in the soluble form of orthosilicic acid (OSA), which yields 50 percent bioavailability, making beer a major contributor to silicon intake in the diet. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), dietary silicon (Si), as soluble OSA, may be important for the growth and development of bone and connective tissue, and beer appears to be a major contributor to Si intake. The study also tested 100 commercial beers for silicon content and categorised the data according to beer style and source, said a UC-D release.

They already know that you told them so, why rub it in? • A family court judge once commented that in 99 percent of the divorce cases he presided over, the couples were upset over very trivial things. Wouldn’t it be ironic if a marriage was strong enough to stand up to all the big challenges, but couldn’t get past the minor irritations of daily life? Here’s a secret from my own happy marriage. • Don’t go through your partner’s things out of curiosity or i n an effort
