All about the Beautiful festival of
Baisakhi B
aisakhi is majorly a festival of celebrated by people belonging to the Sikh community in Punjab and by Sikhs around world belonging to the Sikh community. This festival celebrates the welcoming of the harvest season for the rabi crops and people celebrate this day with a lot of zeal and excitement by performing Gidhha and bhangra. The festival holds a great religious significance for the people of the Sikh community because it was the day in year 1699 that the tenth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh laid the foundation stone for Panth Khalsa-the Order of the Pure Ones.
Day of celebration of Baisakhi
Every year Baisakhi is celebrated on the first day of the Vaisakh month

(that is April or May), which is in accordance with the Sikh calendar and that is why the festival has been given the name of Baisakhi. Every year, Baisakhi falls on 13th of April and on 14th April in every 36 years and this difference is because of the fact that Baisakhi is celebrated on the basis of solar calendar and not the lunar calendar. This pious festival is celebrated all over the country in its different parts with different names and different cultures follow different rituals for celebrating the festival. The date of Baisakhi coincides with that of the ‘Naba Barsha’ in Bengal, ‘Rongali Bihu’ in Assam, ‘Pooram Vishu’ in Kerala and Puthandu in Tamil Nadu.
Baisakhi festival for Farmers
For the huge farming community
/saet_ca APRIL 2019
of the state of Haryana and Punjab, this day is believed to mark a new year as it is the time for harvest of the Rabi crops. Farmers take the opportunity, on this day to show gratitude to God for such great harvest and for all the future joyous events ahead. Most people celebrate this day by
dancing, singing, buying new clothes and cooking delicious food. Baisakhi fairs are also organized in a number of villages of Punjab.
How do people celebrate the festival of Baisakhi? Most of the major activities` related
to the festival are organized in Gurudwara. People get up early in the morning and start preparing for the day. Also many of them take bath in the holy river as a way of celebrating during the auspicious occasion. People visit to their nearby Gurudwara and take part in the parayer being held at the Gurudwara and after the prayer people receive special Prashad for the day which is then followed by langar which is the community lunch as organized by the Gurudwara authorities. Then, during the day time a Biasakhi procession is taken out by the people of Sikh faith which is lead by the Panj piaras. This procession moves all through the city with devotional songs playing in the background.
History related to Baisakhi
The festival of Baisakhi is celebrated as a way of remembering the day when the Khalsa Panth was founded and also as the New Year of the Sikh community. Its origin is related to the year 1699, when Baisakhi day was celebrated which was organized by the Tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh to
form Khalsa (the union of the saint soldiers to fight against the oppressive acts). Courtsey: baisakhifestival.com

WE ARE NOT SELLING LIFE INSURANCE, WE ARE SELLING FINANCIAL PROTECTION Sandeep Ahuja
W
e take life insurance coverage to protect our loved ones from the undue financial burden once we leave the world. You’d need to be aware of the course of action that needs to be followed in case a death claim arises. By following that, it would be possible to get the claim process completed in a timely manner. There are assumptions in the market that the insurance companies are solely working as a profit making corporation and they do not pay claim benefit when the need arises. This is not true. The insurance company is not aiming only to make money, they simply need to verify that the claimant/insured didn’t mislead the insurance company during purchase of policy and the intentions were entirely genuine to safeguard their family in the case of any untoward incident. After verification of facts, the insurance company promptly pays the death benefit to the claimant who can use it as per the needs of his/her family. When you purchase a life insurance policy, the insurance company provides you coverage in good faith and uses due diligence to conduct medicals of the client. The insurance company has the right to ask for your medical history from the family doctor or specialist that you have visited in the past for any major health concern. When a claim arises, what should you do! First, immediately, look into your policy and verify with insurance company or
12
www.lifestylesa.ca
your advisor that it is ‘in force’. Then, request the company to send the required claim forms which usually include claimant statement, physician statement, death certificate and additional documents (if someone dies abroad). Gather all documents, get the physician statement completed by the doctor, complete claimant statement and then, submit documents to claims department of insurance company. If you are not certain about any point, you may seek the guidance of your insurance agent since he has a better understanding of the claim procedure. Now, depending upon the time duration that your policy has been in force, it may be subject to contestability period (if it has been in force for less than two years). Contestability period means that the insurance company has the right to probe deeper into the claim. They may probe the details by consulting the provincial health listing to verify the physicians that insured had consulted during the past 5-10 years. For this, the claimant needs to sign an authorization for the release of health records. Then, insurance company requests medical information from the physicians to verify that the medical facts submitted by
/saet_ca APRIL 2019
insured during the purchase of policy are correct and, that the insured didn’t submit any falsified information during the purchase of policy. Also, they verify the facts related to insured’s death to rule out any false information or foul play. It is important that you do not submit any falsified information during the purchase of policy. Because, during the emergence of a claim, the insurance company will verify in detail the medical facts submitted by the claimant and at that time, if any falsified information comes to the notice of insurance company, you will lose the claim benefit. The purpose of buying insurance for your family’s security is defeated. If somebody hides his smoking status or other physical/mental ailments thinking that he can do away without this information during a claim, it may have a derogatory effect on the overall financial estimates of insurance company. The rate of premiums is calculated by taking into account client’s health history and lifestyle. So if at that stage, the actual health history and lifestyle are not brought to the attention of insurance company, the premiums may be undercharged against the actual cost. Also, if the company had come to know about the inaccuracy/ untruthfulness of submitted facts,
it would not have issued the policy at all. However, it doesn’t mean that the insurance company is aiming solely to deny the claim. They simply need to verify that the claimant/ insured didn’t mislead the insurance company during the purchase of policy. Their intentions were entirely genuine and they only meant to safeguard their family in the case of any untoward incident. After verification of facts, the insurance company promptly pays the death benefit to the claimant who can use it as per the needs of his/her family. This information is for general purpose only. Every insurance company has its own internal claim handling procedure and criteria applicable to the coverage that the insured has. For more information, contact your insurance company. Keep in mind that life insurance is a valuable resource to secure your family during their times of need. Always submit true facts to the insurer when you purchase a policy. This will save your family from the unwanted hassles when they actually need that resource to cope up with their financial needs. As an independent insurance advisor working through Punjab Insurance Agency and dealing with different insurance companies, I can assist you to avail the best insurance coverage suitable for your needs and resources. Also, I can also help you to purchase mortgage insurance, super visa insurance, disability insurance, critical illness insurance, extended medical plans, group medical plans, RESP, RRSP, travel insurance, TFSA accounts, health and dental plans along with estate planning suitable for your needs and resources. 5 ways your phone is ruining your skin
M
obile phones can no longer pass off as a luxury. Millennial or not, in today’s tech-savvy world they are an absolute necessity. However, there’s a copious amount of addiction attached to it as well. Whether you’ve caught yourself mindlessly scrolling through Instagram, or constantly refreshing your Facebook and Twitter feeds, we can all admit that our phones have practically joined forces with our limbs to form one bionic monster. While we all know the adverse effects of cell phones on our internal systems, very few people know its consequences on one essential part of the body – and that’s the skin. Here are 5 ways in which your smartphone is ruining your skin. 1. Tech-Neck When you constantly look down on your phone, you develop something that is now coined as ‘tech-neck’. Caused by the repetitive movement, the elasticity of the skin around
16
www.lifestylesa.ca
the neck decreases resulting in a slight sag. To fix this, make sure to adjust your posture each time you look at your phone. Don’t let your neck hang, and keep it upright instead. 2. Acne A cell phone is breeding ground for bacteria. Think about it, it’s thrown in your bag, it’s exposed to dust and dirt, each time you put it against your face it collects sebum and grime, so obviously it becomes party central. And that party is moved onto your skin whenever you answer a call. Disgusting, right? In order to avoid transference of bacteria, make sure to wipe your screen whenever you use it. Try and use an earpiece to answer calls and avoid touching it against your skin. 3. Spots Studies have shown that overexposure to the light from your screens can result in premature hyperpigmentation and age spots, causing skin to look uneven and damaged. Once again, use your earphones instead of placing your phone against your cheek. 4. Contact dermatitis You know how your wrist turns red after
/saet_ca APRIL 2019
wearing a watch for a long time? Similarly, your phone can also do that to you. Phones are made out of heavy metals that obviously consist of harsh chemicals. Exposure to these chemicals can result in skin allergies and rashes. If you’ve ever experienced itchiness or redness across your jawline, you might be allergic to your phone! Besides using your earphones once again, simply cover your phone with a plastic sleeve when in use. This prevents direct contact of the phone against your skin. 5. Premature ageing Think you’re too young to start showing the early signs of ageing? Well, blame your cell phone for it. Anything that emits high energy light, like your TV, computer screen, and mobile phone, can result in collagen damage Courtsey: FEMINA

Choosing an Orthodontist Dr Vishal Sharma BSc, DDS, Cert. Ortho. FRCD(C), FCDS(BC)

eciding on an orthodontist is an important choice. Not only do you want to ensure the best possible results and a gorgeous smile, you’ll also be spending time with your doctor throughout the duration of your treatment. Do you want to know how to pick an orthodontist? I’ve got you covered. Here are some things to consider:
The Key Orthodontist Qualifications:
First and foremost, you want to make sure a potential orthodontist is qualified to do the do job. An orthodontist is a dentist who has gone through additional, specialized training. After receiving a bachelor’s degree an orthodontist will have completed six to seven more years of schooling. A certified orthodontist has received a doctorate from a dental school, underwent complete training post-dental school and has successfully passed all examinations. Don’t be afraid inquire about their training.
22
www.lifestylesa.ca
It doesn’t just end with a degree, however. Experience is important as well. You’ll want to determine what types of cases they’ve treated, how long they’ve been practicing and if they keep up with continuing education. Keep your needs in mind. You might require someone with an additional specialty in dentofacial orthopedics or if you’re interested in Invisalign or lingual braces, choose an orthodontist who has been trained in providing these treatments.
Important Things to Look For:
So, the orthodontist you have in mind is fully qualified. Now it’s on to the less tangible qualities. It all starts with the first phone call. The
/saet_ca APRIL 2019
staff should be pleasant and accommodating. When you visit a top-notch practice, the team will be warm and friendly. They’ll answer all of your questions and put you at ease. A clean clinic with a welcoming atmosphere is essential. Though often overlooked, it’s also important to find an orthodontist who speaks in the language you’re most comfortable with to fully meet your needs.
To make sure you choose an orthodontist you
like, talk to them! Kids, teens and even adults are often a little nervous about getting braces. For a low-stress process and positive orthodontist experience, a good rapport will go a long way. If the doctor is knowledgeable,
listens to your concerns and goals and is upfront when it comes to the process, treatment options and costs, things will run much more smoothly. You should always leave the consultation feeling informed enough to make the treatment choice that is right for you. Teens and kids can also help pick the orthodontist. Make sure your child or teen feels at ease during the consultation and the orthodontist is able to alleviate some of their fears and anxieties about treatment. Everyone should feel good when they visit the clinic. If the orthodontist is caring and empathetic, you’re on the right track.

Cont from Page22 Questions to ask an Orthodontist:
A main factor in how to choose a local orthodontist you can trust is asking questions. The doctor should be happy to answer and you can determine if they are the right orthodontist for you or your child. Here are some sample questions to get you started: • What kind of qualifications and training do you have? • How long have you been practicing? • What types of orthodontic cases have you treated? • What are your special-
24

ties? • Which types of treatments do you offer? • What are your office hours? • Do you accept insurance? • What type of payment plans are accepted? • Do you require a referral from a dentist?
Once you’ve received a consultation and you’re considering your treatment options you may want to ask: • What exactly needs to be addressed through treatment? • What are the pros and cons of each treatment option? • When is the best time
/saet_ca APRIL 2019
for me, my child, or teen to start treatment? • Which option do you think will be the most effective and why? • How often will we need to visit? • How long will the treatment take? • How much will the treatment cost and how is this cost determined? • A re there any additional fees? • What do you do to encourage proper home care?
• How do you handle braces emergencies? • What types of followup care do you provide (retainers, etc.)? To find an orthodontist it’s often helpful to check out your neighborhood options, conduct some online searches and talk to friends and family. The bottom line is you should feel comfortable and confident when you visit the office. At Aura Orthodontics, myself, Dr. Lin and Dr. Koo are knowledgeable, friendly and experienced. We’ll be more than happy to answer all of your questions and put you at ease. Contact Aura Orthodontics in Langley, Surrey or Abbotsford today for a free consultation.

JET LAG
Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC

ith modern Aviation we all have travelled in Planes. Frequently we travel to South East Asian Countries such as India,Pakistan, Bangladesh etc. We usually cross 12 Time Zones during these Trips from Vancouver BC Jet lag, is a temporary sleep problem that can affect anyone who quickly travels across multiple time zones. Your body has its own internal clock, or circadian rhythms, that signals your body when to stay awake and when to sleep. Jet lag occurs because your body’s clock is still synced to your original time zone, instead of to the time zone where you’ve traveled. The more time zones crossed, the more likely you are to experience jet lag. Jet lag can cause daytime fatigue, an unwell feeling, difficulty staying alert and gastrointestinal problems. Jet lag is temporary, but it can significantly reduce your vacation or business travel
28
www.lifestylesa.ca
comfort. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to help prevent or minimize jet lag. SYMPTOMS Symptoms of jet lag can vary. You may experience only one symptom or you may have many. Jet lag symptoms may include: 4 Disturbed sleep- such as insomnia, early waking or excessive sleepiness 4Daytime fatigue 4 Difficulty concentrating or functioning at your usual level 4 Stomach problems, constipation or diarrhea 4A general feeling of not being well 4Mood changes Symptoms worse the farther you travel Jet lag symptoms usually occur within a day or two of travel if you’ve traveled across at least two time zones. Symptoms are likely to be worse or last longer the more time zones that you’ve crossed, especially if you travel in an easterly direction. It usually takes about a day to recover for each time zone crossed. CAUSES A disruption to your circadian rhythms Jet lag can occur anytime you
/saet_ca APRIL 2019
cross two or more time zones. Jet lag occurs because crossing multiple time zones puts your internal clock or circadian rhythms, which regulate your sleep-wake cycle, out of sync with the time in your new locale. For example, if you leave Vancouver on a flight at 2 p.m. on a Tuesday, and arrive in Delhi at 2 a.m. Wednesday, your internal clock still thinks it’s mid noon That means you’re awake when the Local people are tired to go to sleep And because it takes a few days for your body to adjust, your sleep-wake cycle, along with most other body functions, such as hunger and bowel habits, remains out of step with the rest of Delhi The influence of sunlight A key influence on your internal clock is sunlight. That’s because light influences the regulation of melatonin, a hormone that helps synchronize cells throughout the body. Certain cells in the tissue at the back of your eye (retina) transmit the light signals to an area of your brain called the hypothalamus. At night, when the light signal is low, the hypothalamus tells the pineal gland, a small organ situated in the brain, to release melatonin.
During daylight hours, the opposite occurs, and the pineal gland produces very little melatonin. You may be able to ease your adjustment to your new time zone by exposing yourself to daylight in the new time zone so long as the timing of light is done properly. Airline cabin pressure and atmosphere Some research shows that changes in cabin pressure and high altitudes associated with air travel may contribute to some symptoms of jet lag, regardless of travel across time zones. In addition, humidity levels are low in planes. If you don’t drink enough water during your flight, you can get slightly dehydrated. Dehydration may also contribute to some symptoms of jet lag. RISK FACTORS Factors that increase the likelihood you’ll experience jet lag include: 4 Number of time zones crossed. The more time zones you cross, the more likely you are to be jet-lagged. 4 Flying east. You may find it harder to fly east, when you “lose” time, than to fly west, when you gain it back. Cont. from Page 28 4 Being a frequent flyer. Pilots, flight attendants and business travelers are most likely to experience jet lag. 4 Being an older adult. Older adults may need more time to recover from jet lag than do younger adults PREVENTION A few basic steps may help prevent jet lag or reduce its effects: 4 Arrive early. If you have an important meeting or other event that requires you to be in top form, try to arrive a few days early to give your body a chance to adjust. 4 Get plenty of rest before your trip. Starting out sleep-deprived makes jet lag worse. 4 Gradually adjust your schedule before you leave. If you’re traveling east, try going to bed one hour earlier each night for a few days before your departure. Go to bed one hour later for several nights if you’re flying west. If possible, eat meals closer to the time you’ll be eating them at your destination. 4 Regulate bright light exposure. Because light exposure is one of the prime influences on your body’s circadian rhythm, regulating light exposure may help you adjust to your new location. In general, exposure to light in the evening helps you adjust to a later than usual time zone (traveling westward), while exposure to morning light can help you adapt to an earlier time zone faster (traveling eastward). The one exception is if you have traveled more than eight time zones from your original time zone, because exposure to light in the early morning could be mistaken by your body as dusk. Conversely, evening light might be interpreted as dawn. So, if you’ve traveled more than eight time zones to the east, wear sunglasses and avoid bright light in the morning, and then allow as much sunlight as possible in the late afternoon for the first few days in your new location. If you have traveled west by more than eight time zones, avoid sunlight a few hours before dark for the first few days to adjust to the local time. 4 Stay on your new schedule. Set your watch to the new time before you leave. Once you reach
30
www.lifestylesa.ca
your destination, try not to sleep until the local nighttime, no matter how tired you are. Try to time your meals with local mealtimes too. 4 Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water before, during and after your flight to counteract the dehydrating effects of dry cabin air. Dehydration can make jet lag symptoms worse. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, as these can dehydrate you and affect your sleep. 4 Try to sleep on the plane if it’s nighttime at your destination. Earplugs, headphones and eye masks can help block out noise and light. If it’s daytime where you’re going, resist the urge to sleep. TREATMENT Jet lag is generally temporary and usually doesn’t need treatment. Symptoms often improve within a few days, though they sometimes last longer. However, if you’re a frequent traveler continually bothered by jet lag, your doctor may prescribe medications or light therapy. Medications 4 Nonbenzodiazepines, such as zolpidem (Ambien), eszopiclone (Lunesta) and zaleplon (Sonata) 4 Benzodiazepines, such as triazolam (Halcion) These medications — sometimes called sleeping pills — may help you sleep during your flight and for several nights afterward. Side effects are uncommon, but may include nausea, vomiting, amnesia, sleepwalking, confusion and morning sleepiness. Although these medications appear to help sleep duration and quality, they may not lessen daytime symptoms of jet lag. These medications are usually only recom-

mended for people who haven’t been helped by other treatments. Light therapy Your body’s internal clock or circadian rhythms are influenced by exposure to sunlight, among other factors. When you travel across time zones, your body must adjust to a new daylight schedule and reset, allowing you to fall asleep and be awake at the appropriate times. Light therapy can help ease that transition. It involves exposing your eyes to an artificial bright light or lamp that simulates sunlight for a specific and regular amount of time during the time when you’re meant to be awake. This may be useful, for example, if you’re a business traveler and are often away from natural sunlight during the day in a new time zone. Light therapy comes in a variety of forms including a light box that sits on a table, a desk lamp that may blend in better in an office setting or a light visor that you wear on your head. Sunlight Use sunlight to reset your internal clock. It’s the most powerful natural tool for regulating the sleep-wake cycle. Plan ahead to determine the best times for light exposure based on your departure and destination points and overall sleep habits. Morning light exposure can usually help you adjust to an earlier time zone (traveling eastward), while evening light helps you adapt to a later time zone (traveling westward). Combining light exposure with exercise such as walking or jogging may help you adapt to the new time even faster. Avoiding light at certain times is important too. For example, someone traveling west should avoid
light in the morning on the first few days. During the day, dark glasses can help block out light. At night, draw the blinds or drapes in your hotel room or use a sleep mask. Caffeine Beverages with caffeine such as coffee, espresso and soft drinks may help offset daytime sleepiness. Drink caffeinated drinks judiciously. Avoid caffeinated beverages after midday since caffeine consumed after that time may make it even more difficult to fall asleep or sleep well. Alternative medicine Melatonin As a jet lag remedy and sleep aid, melatonin which is Available over the Counter has been widely studied, and it’s now a commonly accepted part of effective jet lag treatment. The latest research seems to show that melatonin aids sleep during times when you wouldn’t normally be resting, making it beneficial for people with jet lag. Your body treats melatonin as a darkness signal, and generally has the opposite effect of bright light. The time at which you take melatonin is important. If you’re trying to reset your body clock to a later time, such as after flying east, you should take melatonin at local bedtime nightly until you have become adapted to local time. If you’re trying to reset your body clock to an earlier time, such as after flying west, melatonin should be taken in the morning. Doses as small as few mg is effective , although higher doses have been shown by some studies to be more sleep promoting. If you use melatonin, take it 30 minutes before you plan to sleep or ask your doctor about the proper timing. Avoid alcohol when taking melatonin. Side effects are uncommon but may include dizziness, headache, daytime sleepiness, loss of appetite, and possibly nausea and disorientation. Additional possible remedies Although diet hasn’t been proven to help jet lag, some people use diets that alternate days of feasting and fasting and high-protein and low-protein meals. If such a diet seems too complicated, you can try eating more high-protein foods to stay alert and more carbohydrates when you want to sleep. Some people use exercise to try to ease the effects of jet lag.

fines emotion as a mental and physical state, referring to the hormones and other molecules associated with emotion. Emotions are thoughts that we feel whole of our lives. A pregnant woman’s emotions are created based on the way she perceives her: • Pregnancy on the way, • Relationships • Baby shower plans • Nursery decoration • Work routine • Overall Health Persistent, consistnent thoughts of a mom to be, are the originator for her emotions. And her emotions are the precursor for the neurohormones. When a pregnant mother is fearful, anxious, stressed and stressful state, the stress hormones released into her bloodstream cross through the placenta (umbillical cord] to the baby. Hundreds of studies have confirmed that chemicals released by the pregnant mother’s body are transported into the womb and affect the unborn baby accordingly. Negative thoughts during this

Thoughts may not be magical , but they cause the formation of specific hormones that have a very real effect on the body of mom to be and her unborn baby. So, during this period a woman has to be kept at ease, from every point of view, otherwise, it will affect the child to be born either way.
period are damaging: Negative thoughts very often, give a fear-based stress response. This stress activates the unborn child’s endocrine system and influences fetal brain development. Research has confirmed that children born to mothers who had intensely stressful pregnancies are more likely to have behavioral problems later in life . Studies show that mothers under extreme and constant stress are more likely to have babies who are premature, under
weight, hyperactive in behaviour, irritable, and colicky. When passing through the placenta, the hormones of a mother experiencing chronic stress will deeplyalter the distribution of blood flow in her fetus and negatively influence the character of her developing child’s physiology i.e. the functioning of various parts of the body.. Positive thoughts are very advantageous: Conversely, positive maternal emotions have been shown to facilitate the health of the unborn child. Thoughts which infuse the developing baby with a sense of happiness or calm can set the stage for a balance, happy, and serene disposition throughout life. When you feel joyful, your body produces natural pleasure chemicals called endorphins and encephalins. When you are peaceful and relaxed, you release chemicals pari passu with prescription tranquilizers. Sans stress, your baby’s nervous system works smoothly. Cont on Page 36

Cont from Page 34 Creative visualization helps: Creative visualization is the fundamental technique underlying reality creation. It is the process of using thought power to consciously imagine, create and attract to yourself that which you intend to experience in your life. Mastering creative visualization grants you direct control over your thoughts at the subconscious level. While there are several ways to programme the subconscious mind, visualization is the most effective and its results in a most rapid manner. This form of mental imagery can program one’s subconscious thoughts, changing perceptions and responses from negative to positive. Research has confirmed that imagery can alter blood flow, grow healthy cells, and destroy cancer cells. A pregnant mother can affect her unborn child’s genetic development. by Whether it’s called imagery, visualization, meditation, or hypnosis, decades of research have established this process for generating a multitude of tangible changes in the mental, emotional, and physical body. If you are a pregnant woman, you may try these visual exercises: In a place that is free of interruptions, close your eyes and practice seeing, feeling, hearing, smelling and even tasting your way into a relaxed feeling, perhaps bringing attention towards your developing baby. The key is to gently feel the ease as you flow through this imagery.Use the richness of your imagination, and go on a daydream. If other thoughts enter your mind, patiently return to your happy self, and healthy baby.. Practicing positive thoughts and feelings will branch neurons and wire parts of your brain to respond accordingly. The more you practice, the faster and better you will learn to retrieve those emotions.

When the mom- to- be is cool, calm , composed ,collected , confident and centered, the baby is able to grow peacefully. A partner/husband and other members of the family must understand it.
A pregnant woman’s thoughts have a physical connection to her unborn child. Everything the pregnant mother feels and thinks is communicated through neurohormones to her unborn child, just as surely as are alcohol and nicotine.
An example of more in depth guided imagery: • Imagine your growing baby by closing your eyes. • Visualize what a healthy child looks like. • Sense what a healthy child feels like. • Hear what a healthy child sounds like. • How does his heart pump blood? • How do her arms are moving inside you
• Feel , your little one smiling in the womb. • Feel her move in joyful motion. Negative thoughts are veryoften the root cause of a fearbased stress response: Stress activates the unborn child’s endocrine system and influences fetal brain development negatively. Children born to mothers who had intensely stressful pregnancies are more likely to have behavioral problems later in life.Studies show that mothers under extreme and constant stress are more likely to have babies who are premature, underweight, hyperactive, irritating, and colicky. As per a well-known expert, cell biologist and neuroscientist, Bruce Lipton, Ph.D. writes, “When passing through the placenta, the hormones of a mother experiencing chronic stress will profoundly alter the distribution of blood flow in her fetus and change the character
of her developing child’s physiology.” Research has confirmed that imagery can alter blood flow, grow healthy cells, and destroy cancer cells. Lipton has even offered that a pregnant mother can affect her unborn child’s genetic development. Whether it’s called imagery, visualization, meditation, or hypnosis, decades of research have established this process for generating a multitude of tangible changes in the mental, emotional, and physical body. Bottomline: The journey through parenthood is filled with joy, but also elements of confusion, and sometimes worries creeps in. How a woman thinks about her baby while she’s pregnant could have a long-term impact on the child’s development. Studies have shown that parent-child interaction is crucial for a child’s development and learning later on. It will not be out of place to mention that a mother’s attitude towards her baby during pregnancy and her later interactionshas an established dovetailing. Increased awareness of the baby during pregnancy: Research has also shown that increased awareness of the baby during pregnancy is associated with healthy behaviors during pregnancy, such as giving up smoking, drugs, alcoholand junk food curtailment go a long way to safeguard the health of an

We all understand that, how it feels like to be criticized/ disliked by someone. That’s why we deal people with the greatest degree of empathy [ not sympathy] and compassion in our hearts. But sometimes we come across a situation where we realize that we need to be more selective in our dealing with others. We cannot just let everyone into our lives. We cannot allow everyone to be in our comfort zone. We need healthy boundaries. I hope you agree with me, dear reader.

we should not deal with…
Biologically, we are hardwired to remain connected with our close friends, relatives et al. We do our best to avoid relationship breakdown. The inherent primitive fear of rejection and abandonment is what motivates us to deal every relationship carefully. The million-dollar question is, on the ever-moving carousel of time, we have to seriously re-evaluate some relationships in our lives. Here is the type of people, we need to review and mark a delete, if need be: The people can not trust any longer: For the relationship to work, as desired, there must be a level of trust present on reciprocal basis.
/saet_ca APRIL 2019
There is no point in sharing with a close person, in case the subject matter will not remain confidential. To feel secure in any relationship, a person must have qualified to be absolutely confidential, to truly keep a secret, the expressed deepest thoughts, feelings, and life experiences. On time front, at some point, we’ve all had our trust tested in a relationship. Maybe our best friend revealed something confidential and we spilled the beans and that resulted in damaged reputation. In such circumstances we start feeling ill-at-ease. A lack of trust is indeed a real barrier to a genuine and authentic connection. A wise and prudent person always mark a delete on a person who violates his trust.
I always feel firmly that I have the right to feel safe in my friendships/ relationships with others. The people who do not respect us as a human being: Rightfully, they say, a man is a social animal. We all are socialized in certain ways of our own. We all have our own level of comfort zone. We have our own likes and dislikes. We have our own preferences. Those who do not respect your feelings, viewpoint in general- have no business to be around you. If a person respect others’ bodily autonomy, caste, color, creed, ethnicity and culture, that is a likable person, in my point of view. Cont. on next page 40

Stay away from people, who are habitual criticizers and are always on a fault-findingmission. They are an incurably negative lot. In case you decide to continue with them, your own reputation may be affected. Always remember, one is known by the company one keeps. Cont. from page 38 If anyone cannot respect that I am a human being with my own desires and needs, I do not have a place for such people in my life. If such a person cannot respect my ability to make my own choices, then polite no will be my answer. Though the boundaries are incredibly hard to set. The ways we interact with each other, depend on our culture and our upbringing always influence our behaviour. We all make mistakes. Others forgive us and so we should also do. This way, we can build healthy boundaries that respect everyone involved. The people who always make us feel guilty: There are always some people in the society ,we move ,who make us feel guilty about something. It is natural for us to feel uncomfortable. We feel like we need to explain to ourselves, and apologize, even when we are not in the wrong. Such type of people plays dirty and they think it is our job to please them. Guilt can be a useful emotion—it tells us when we have done something wrong—but when we are in a relationship with someone who constantly has us feeling like we aren’t good enough, it can drain our energy and hurt our self-esteem. An injured self-esteem opens an exit door for the relationship to ed in near future. The people who are not flexible: We all have our habits, which are not easy to change. Likewise, when those around us have been stuck in the same bad habits for years in succession, it is an indicator that

Love the person, a creation of God, but hate the bad behaviour in him/her. Forgive the mistakes of other people, but always expect improvement from the other side. If, there is, no improvement in a reasonable period, then the time is ripe to mark a delete on such a person. I will say better alone, than in a bad company. something is wrong. There are times when friends, family members and partners get into tacky situations, and they seek our help. It’s normal to lend a helping hand when someone is in need, but there we need to draw the line. We can only help someone who wants to help themselves. Many
we are hardwired with a longing to belong to others. Under the garb of selfishness, others, sometimes try to take advantage of our emotions; and more so show contempt also. Many relationship experts (e.g. scholars, therapists, counselors) have conclusively cited individual or mutual contempt is the best predictor of a relationship failure.

people have a way of saying that they want to change, but their actions tell us otherwise. Maybe they always say how miserable and unhappy they are, but instead of trying to solve the problem, they would rather sit on the couch and engage in Social Media, all day. Nobody is required to be happy and positive all the time, and it is important to honor and process our negative feelings and experiences. But some people seem to thrive on the drama, and at a certain point, we must admit it is important to take care of our own well-being first. The people who only show up when they need favor from us: Relationships thrive if they are based on the doctrine of reciprocity. In a healthy relationship, both sides share the good and bad happenings in their respective lives. They walk together, eat together whenever time permits. Such type of relationships always matters, because they load us with pleasure and happiness. The word of caution is for those selfish ones, who, approach us every time they need something. If they are going through a rough patch in their lives, they need to talk., otherwise they keep the door closed all the time. But when we need help or going through a rough patch, they are not there, Not There and NOT THERE. In such a scenario, I fervently feel, time is ripe to close the door and walk away. The selfish people: Recognizing if and when someone is being selfish in a relationship/ friendship can be difficult, especially when it’s someone that’s close to
you. Most of the people are good at heart, and we should give others also the benefit of the doubt. People who use and misuse others for personal gains are leeches, and they don’t care who it is they hurt. They are selfish by nature. The probable signs that your partner/ friend is taking advantage of you are as follows: • E verything happens on their terms and conditions •A ll the decisions regarding places you go, people you see, and things you do are too frequently theirs • Y our ideas are quickly rebuffed or deliberately ignored •M ost communication from such a person is negative, neutral and discouraging • T hey have contempt in their dealings, which result in relationship failure • T hey exhibit a lack of effort very often which is a sign of disinterest or disengagement. • I f you’re pouring a disproportionate amount of time, money and energy into the relationship and they are not doing so on reciprocal basis, then something is wrong. • T hey are not ready to make your relationship a priority. • Y ou’ve seen them flirting with others. Physical lust is their priority Bottomline: Cutting ties with people we know or care about is a very difficult process. We long to hold the relationship with compassion because we know how difficult rejection can be. But we can’t let compassion turn us into a doormat for use or misuse by others. We have a right to feel safe and loved in our relationships. While it’s important to remember that we’re all human and make mistakes, if someone shows no signs of remorse or no willingness to reciprocate in our relationships, it might be time to let them go for ever. Always remember to have compassion for yourself first. You deserve respect. You are allowed to enforce your own boundaries. And once you do, you open the door for more positive, nourishing connections. Always remember that, “A relationship without sacrifice or compromise is not a real relationship.”

Discover your inner beauty embrace your physical features. After all, beauty doesn’t depend on shapes or sizes, it depends on the kind of attitude you have towards your body.

hey say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You could have the latest fashion forward clothes and flawless makeup on, but if you don’t feel beautiful on the inside, then you will never feel good about how you look on the outside. That is why, before focusing on fixing your outside appearance, focus on the inside and try to feel happy from within. Here are some quick tips to discovering your inner beauty and happiness: 1- Embrace your physical features Society’s idea of beauty changes with every decade and century. Just because your body doesn’t align with the currently accepted idea of beauty, doesn’t mean you aren’t beautiful. The trends will always come and go. Instead of changing yourself according to the new trends,

2- Change your relationship with the mirror Instead of looking into the mirror to fix your hair or check if that annoying pimple has disappeared, look at your best aspects and focus on them. Pick out three best aspects of your body that you like, every day. As you look in the mirror, give positive affirmations and compliments to yourself. While you are doing that, don’t forget to smile. Initially it might feel weird talking to yourself in the mirror, but its just a part of the process which will eventually make you feel more confident and embrace your inner beauty. 3- Get rid of negativity According to research, women have on average 13 negative thoughts about their body everyday. To really feel beautiful from the inside, you need to reverse that negativity and fix your self image issues. Instead of being harsh and over critical about yourself, put your focus on all the positive things. Cont. on next page

4- Confidence is the key Once you have deleted negative thoughts from your mind and braved in front of the mirror, it’s time to be a little more confident and stand taller. Put on a smile, work on your body posture and make sure you look people right in the eye when you meet them. If you don’t feel confident just yet, we recommend faking it till you really make it. Sometimes behaving as if you are confident can indeed make you feel more confident. 5- Develop hobbies Find activities that you are passionate about which have nothing to do with shopping, makeup, or mirrors. Whether its an online course that could help you improve your skills or an outdoor activity that you have been thinking about doing for a long time, pick one

matter what, and others who will always pick out shortcomings in you even when you look perfect. To truly feel beautiful from the inside, you need to weed out those people from your life who bring nothing but negativity with them. Instead, focus on creating
meaningful and nurturing relationships with people who have always seen the good in you and supported you through difficult times. Invest your energy, time, and money in people that make you feel glad that you are alive.

How to Prepare for Your First Job
Interview
Going for your first job interview is like a right of passage -- Like the first day to school or college. It is understandable to be nervous about the whole ordeal. But the more prepared you are, the more confident you will feel during your interview.
Ritika Tiwari Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist

o help you ace your first job interview, we have put together some helpful tips: 1- Get to know the company and the job role Before you start preparing for the interview, it’s important to do your homework to get a complete understanding of the company, its culture, and the job you are interviewing for. Start by researching about the company, its reputation online, and
52
www.lifestylesa.ca
the key stakeholders. You should also get a clear understanding of the products and services that the company offers and its key target audience. After getting the scoop on the company, you need to research about the job itself -- The responsibilities, tasks, and duties that it entails. The experience and skills required by the ideal candidate should be your main focus. The more information you have, the more prepared you will be to answer questions and impress the interviewers. 2- Look the part For your first job interview, you need to look the part and show the interviewers that you truly fit into their company. It isn’t the time to experiment with a new look. You need to look professional, sharp, and smart. Pick out formals with subtle colours and avoid dressing too casual. Also,
/saet_ca APRIL 2019
you shouldn’t wear any loud colours or clashing patterns to ensure your clothes aren’t a distraction. Check for any stains or wrinkles before you go for the interview and keep accessories to the bare minimum. Personal grooming is just as necessary -- Get a sharp haircut and trim your nails. Even if the company you are interviewing for has a casual dress code, its still best to wear semi-casuals like khakis and collared shirts. 3- First impressions go a long way Imagine the poor impression made when a job candidate arrives late to an interview. To avoid this disaster, make sure you know exactly where the interview will take place. Also, you should have a good understanding of where to park. In general, show up about 15 minutes early for the interview. And if you can, do a practice run to the site
of the interview so that you can get your timing down. When you go inside for the interview, speak clearly with confidence when you introduce yourself. Don’t forget to check your posture and make eye contact with the interviewer. At the end of the interview, shake the interviewer’s hand and thank them for giving you their valuable time. Let them know that they can contact you in case they have any additional questions. 4- Avoid weaknesses that are actually strengths Don’t be that person who lists their strengths as their weakness, like ‘I work too hard.’ The interviewers will see right through you. Instead, pick out a real weakness that you can easily address. It’s also advisable to modify your answer according to the job role you are interviewing for. Though, avoid being brutally honest and mentioning any major weaknesses like -- ‘I am often late to work.’

“Twilight Princess” By Sid Bhullar
S
id Bhullar, a 21-year-old upcoming, rap artist from Vancouver, British Columbia has begun to make a name for himself in the community. Recently, he has released his new, hit single, “Twilight Princess,” on February 25, 2019. The music video was released through the worldfamous organization, known as, ‘WorldStar HipHop’. This organization, given the title of ‘Top Hip Hop and Urban Culture Website’ by BET, has been well known for promoting and supporting various, famous artists, such as: P. Diddy, Machine Gun Kelly, Tory Lanez, 6ix9ine, and many more. Currently, the organization stands at over 19.5 million subscribers on Youtube. Sid Bhullar began his rap career at the age of 12, when he released his first single ‘Won’t Stop’, sending a positive message towards Anti-Bullying awareness. He now has self-written, produced and sang over 15 singles since then. Each music video on his account has over half a million views. In his latest hit, he creates a metaphor using video game characters to depict the harsh realities of women in adultery jobs. The lyrics outline the struggles of self-confidence and self-esteem that many of these workers face through the pain of raising and providing families on the side. The metaphor creatively appeals to the young generation of millennials in this era, while the underlining message shows a strong concern towards raising awareness for gender and working equality. In controversy, some have addressed concerns towards the inappropriate dancing and borderline nudity seen in the music video. When questioned on this matter, Bhullar expressed, “My main goal is to raise awareness towards topics that affect us all in one way or another. The characters presented by these strong women, seen in the music video, have my highest respect for all the struggles they face every day. They are no different from the rest of us, and should not be treated so.” Bhullar has announced his debut album release this coming summer. He will soon be graduating from medical school, and plans to continue his singing career alongside his academics. His new track ‘Twilight Princess’ can be found on iTunes for purchase.

Approved Tips To Pull Off Red Lipstick
A
sk any beauty editor or makeup artist about a classic makeup look and red lipstick will undeniably be a part of it. And why wouldn’t it be - it’s rich, intense and looks good on every skin tone...when worn well, that is. You see, when it comes to that elegant rouge tube, it isn’t as easy as applying it and heading out of the door. No siree, with red lipstick there’s a lot of care you need to take before and after applying it. Luckily for you, we spoke to Mansi Mehta Kothari, Makeup Artist and Creative Director, Makeup at MyGlamm to impart her wisdom with us. So if you’re apprehensive about pulling off a fiery red lip, theseseven makeup tips are all you need to know. 1. Know Your Undertone Just as you would choose foundation and concealer based on how cool or warm your skin undertone is, you must do the same when it comes to red lipstick. For skin with cool pink undertones, bright fire-truck reds look lovely. For warmer yellow undertones which is usually medium to dusky skin, deeper reds like brick to crimson shades really pop against the skin. 2. Easy On The Eyes
72

Says Mansi, “When you wear red lipstick, ensure that you keep your eye makeup clean and minimal. Neat winged liner with a flick at the end is classic choice to wear.” Red lips are attention-grabbing in themselves and don’t need the drama of heavy eye makeup so definitely no smokey eyes. Even just concealed eyes with a few coats of mascara looks fantastic with red lips. 3. Choose Blush Right Even if poppy pink tones are usually your shades of choice when applying blush, they’ll prove to be a clash of colour when wearing red lipstick. “Along with red lips, keep your blush neutral toned and close to the shade of your own skin. Terracota to bronze toned blush is an ideal choice for this look”, advises Mansi. 4. Take Your Pick Once you’ve decided to wear red lips, take your pick whether you’d like to opt for a juicy glossy finish or a stark matte one. This is because the rest of your face depends on the finish of your lips. Here’s what Mansi has to say - “If you’ll be wearing matte lipstick, make sure your face is hydrated and dewy. If it’s glossy lips that you are going for, then
/saet_ca APRIL 2019
your skin should be mattified.” This ensures that there’s a balance of finishes across the face, without looking too harshly matte or greasily glossy. 5. Make It Pop Especially if you have pigmented lips, the rich red colour showing up on your lips can be problematic. To make sure they truly pop, follow this makeup tip from Mansi. “Apply a thin layer of concealer that matches your skin tone all around your natural lip line and slightly inside the edges of your lip. Once it has dried,
move on to lipstick.” This works as a primer to remove any traces of pigmentation and prevents lipstick from bleeding outside. 6. Colour In The Lines Red lipstick is unforgivable when it comes to application because it requires clean, precise application. Ideally, a red lip liner can be helpful as a starting step to first draw the natural lip line and fill it in. If you’re unsure about applying lipstick directly, a lip brush can give you more control over the colour. Word of advice though, don’t try this when you’re running late and sitting in the back of a cab. Courtsey: TNN

5 signs your hair is due for a haircut
‘When’s the last time you got a haircut?’ How many of you have lied through your teeth when visiting a hairstylist for a much-required chop? We all tend to procrastinate, especially when it comes to a haircut. While you think that not cutting your hair will help you achieve those Rapunzel-esque locks, what you don’t realise is that you’re damaging them even further. The first step to restoration lies in accepting that your hair needs restoring. And that comes with a lovely haircut. If you’re waking up with an angry mane every other day, here are the tell-tale signs that your hair needs a trim, or more. 1. It’s falling more than usual Losing hair in the shower? Keep finding it on your pillow? Your hairbrush is more hair
74

than bristles? Well, that means your hair is weak and brittle and therefore needs a whole lot of TLC. 2. It has lost shape
/saet_ca APRIL 2019
Your hair loses shape as it grows out and when you’ve outgrown the style, you end up going from a lovely layered haircut, to a Christmas tree.
That’s when you need to visit your stylist and get it restyled. This way, you will also chop off any dead ends that make your hair look lifeless. 3. You’ve got too many split ends If you’ve got way too many split ends, you’re due for a haircut. Wrap your ends around your finger and see how it looks. If it’s smooth, with a couple of strands sticking out, you’re good to go. However, if your hair looks more porcupine-like, then it’s probably time. 4. It’s falling flat When they say hair gets lifeless, they mean it. If your hair loses volume it usually tends to fall flat, which means you need to revive it with a haircut to get it back to shape. Why you should always remove your make-up
W
e have all been there, when we are too lazy to remove our makeup. From attending late-night weddings to a long day at work, removing make-up seems like a tedious job at night. But, do you know that this habit can take a toll on your skin? Missing that one step at night is one beauty sin a girl should never commit. Don’t agree? Read through and know all the things that can happen when you don’t remove your make-up regularly. 1. Eye infection Getting that eye make-up right is an achievement for every girl. But, do you know that those hot smokey eyes or those colourful shadows can cause an eye infection? From mascara to shadows, the tiny particles can slip into your eyes and cause irritation, redness and even a severe infection. 2. Stubborn Blackheads No one is a fan of those hid-

eous blackheads on the face! When you don’t remove makeup, you’re only clogging your pores, leading to blackheads. 3. Pimple One of the most obvious thing that can happen when you don’t remove make-up is acne. Clogged pores and not removing make-up can cause infection and lead to pimples. 4. Dry Lips Removing that long-lasting lip colour is a task, we know. But is it worth getting dry lips? No way. When you don’t remove your lipstick at night, your lips can become dry as the colour leaches the moisture away from them. 5. Skin Ageing It’s always better to take care of your skin at an early stage than going for treatments later on. Not removing your make-up, creates a barrier leading to dry skin. Also, the make-up attracts free radicals which can cause early signs of ageing. Courtsey: TNN
