food waste
6 hacks to eat smart and cut down As we have stepped into the New Year, we have undoubtedly drowned in the festive cheer and great food! The celebrations however are usually accompanied by a lot of wastage. We can be more mindful about our relationship with food by incorporating these small changes into our daily life to reduce food wastage:
Buy Smart: Stick to your list of needs and avoid impulse buying. Don’t buy in bulk, but make frequent trips to the grocery store instead and coincide it with your jogging schedule or biking time so the trips become fun! This’ll ensure you only buy what you really need. Store Smart: Proper storage of foods will help keep them at their peak for longer. Not all foods need refrigeration - Potatoes, tomatoes, garlic, cucumbers and onions should be stored at room temperature. Some fruits and vegetables produce ethylene gas that causes early ripening (or rotting) of foods that are sensitive to ethylene. These should always be stored separately. Foods that produce ethylene gas include bananas, avocados, tomatoes, cantaloupes, peaches, pears, green onions. Store them in separate bags and away from ethylene-sensitive foods like potatoes, apples, leafy greens, berries and peppers to avoid premature spoilage. Refrigerate Smart: Stock your fridge using the FIFO method (First in, first out). Place newly bought foods behind older ones. For example when you buy a new carton of
6
JANUARY 2021
berries, place the newer package behind the old one. This helps ensure that older food gets used, not wasted. Also when you’ve kept leftovers in the fridge, keep them in glass containers so you don’t forget about them. Smoothie Smart: While the stems, ends and peels of many items may not be appetizing in their whole form, adding them to a smoothie is a way to reap their nutritional benefits. Spinach leaves and stems that turn soggy after just a day or two in the kitchen, can be stored in the freezer and be used to make a super healthy smoothie. Upcycle Smart: Get innovative with leftovers
and turn them into delicious sandwiches and rolls. Leftover white rice can be turned into delicious tomato rice the next day, or even a fried-rice, and leftover cooked vegetables can be used to make healthy parathas and sandwiches! Order Smart: Be mindful of the quantity of food you order at restaurants. When you’re unable to finish, always ask for it to be packed to bring back home. Today there are multiple restaurants that have a special small-plate menu: an initiative that has effectively proven to reduce leftovers. Source: IANS

ohri is one of the most commonly celebrated festivals in India and it is a way to spread the joy of seeing the sparkling pearls of Rabi crops amidst traditional folk songs, dance and food. The festival of Lohri, which is celebrated primarily by Sikhs and Hindus all across India, marks the end of winter season and is traditionally believed to welcome the sun to the northern hemisphere. Observed a night before Makar Sankranti, this festival is celebrated with great pomp and show, especially in the north Indian region. One of the first Hindu festivals of the year, it is essentially termed as the festival of the farmers, the festival of harvest, whereby, the farmers can thank the Supreme Being. Lohri celebrations – History Lohri’s origin dates back to the Indus valley civilisation. Since this civilisation prospered in the areas
of northern India and Pakistan, the festival is primarily celebrated in a similar manner in those regions. It has various other names in the other parts of India such as Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Makar Sankranti in Bengal, Magha Bihu in Assam and Tai Pongal in Kerala. The stories related with Lohri are numerous and are based on religious as well as socio-cultural traditions and events. The most famous and interesting legend behind Lohri is the story associated by Dulla Bhatti. Dulla Bhatti was popular among the poor, akin to Robin Hood, at the time of Mughal king Akbar. He used to plunder the rich community and distribute the loot among the poor and needy. This made him famous and revered among the populace. The other stories say that the word Lohri has come from the root ‘loh‘, which means a big iron griddle or tava on which chapattis are made for community feasts. Another version says that the word Lohri comes from ‘Loi’, who was the wife of the celebrated reformer Kabir Das. Importance Originally, Lohri was celebrated the night just before Winter Solstice. It used to mark the coldest night of the year, which was followed by the longest night and shortest day of the year. Since the night is extremely chilly, people protected themselves by burning

the fire and keeping it throughout the night and spending their time around the fire, propitiating the deities of the sun and fire. This festival also marks the harvesting time of rabi crops, that is, the crops of the winter season. The people of Punjab, the most fertile belt of India, celebrate the harvesting of sugar cane thorough this festival. Sesame seeds, jaggery, radish, mustard and spinach are also harvested, and they are the primary attractions of the festivity. People make sweets called revari and gajak, and staples such as Sarso ka Saag with Makki ki roti. Radish is one of the attractions of the feast and is also included in it.
such as sweets, sugar, sesame seeds, jaggery and cow dung cakes. Since this festival marks a thanks giving to the sun god, the mother earth, the fields and the fire, they offer oblations to the fire in the name of various demigods and chant their names and mantras. People circumambulate the fire, which marks a sign of respect and reverence and pray for their prosperity and health. The whole mood continues and at the end, the feast is organised, which consists of delicious dishes.

Why using sunscreen is important during winters
I
t’s that time of the year when you say hello to all your jackets, hoodies and warm clothes. Winter is finally here and so are your winter skincare routines. Though people often wonder why they need to wear sunscreen during the winter if they are not exposed to the bright sun. Having said so, it is wrongly believed that the sunscreen is more of an option than a necessity during the winter months. While we conveniently associate cold weather with dry skin and windburns, most people are unaware that the winter UV rays can be every bit as damaging as the summer sun. Megha Asher, Co-founder and COO of Juicy Chemistry, explains: “The ozone layer acts as Earth’s sun-shield and absorbs harmful UV rays. The ozone layer is actually at its thinnest in the winter. Windburn and sunburn also act in unison during the rough winter months. The freezing temperatures and vicious winds that leave your skin dry and agitated allow for UV rays to have a better shot at your skin.” Wearing sunscreen on exposed skin, especially when the sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., will keep you protected from these damaging rays, she says. If you’re planning to be outdoors applying sunscreen is very impor-

tant. For adequate protection, select broad-spectrum sunscreens and lip balms with a minimum of 30 SPF with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide as the active ingredient, for those looking for a chemical-free, reef-safe option, choose sunscreens, Asher suggests. As there is less humidity in the winters, your skin is constantly stripped of moisture. Dryness reveals every wrinkle and a fine line in the skin’s surface, and it makes your skin more likely to crack or tear, exposing you to infection risk.
Using sunscreen in the winter can help restore some of your skin’s depleted moisture, she says. “Having said that the sun’s rays are known to accelerate the skin’s ageing process. Sunscreens protect skin from the sun’s rays and add moisture back into dry skin, addressing two concerns at once. The daily application of the right sunscreen slows the ageing process and making the skin looking more youthful.”
entire life is UVA which contributes to skin cancer and premature ageing. We are exposed to UVA rays every time we step out of our house. UVA penetrates through clouds and also window glass, therefore it is imperative to wear sunscreen even when your indoors, Asher points out. This season be ready with your healthy and ever-glowing skin with the right sunscreen to bring that winter glow!

Drew Barrymore: D
I know what it’s like to lose and work for things rew Barrymore made it big in Hollywood at the age of seven, only to be blacklisted at the age of 12. The Hollywood actress says living through the turbulent times of her career has made her appreciate her position and opportunities today. “It’s crazy, I’ve never felt more humble and grateful in my entire life than I do right now to be alive, to have two kids that are healthy,” Barrymore told in an interview while looking back at her showbiz struggles. “I don’t know how I ended up here but I’ll never lose sight and I never have lost sight of how lucky I am. I’ve lost my job. When you are blacklisted at 12 you appreciate every job, I appreciate every job I have,” she shared, adding: “I know what it’s like to lose and work for things, and be so lucky and have the opportunities that I have and everything in between.” Barrymore became a star as a child artiste after working in Steven Spielberg’s 1982 global sci-fi blockbuster “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” and then “Firestarter” (1984). With fame came addiction and rejection, making her the wild child of Hollywood. Now sobered up, Barrymore has courted success as an actress, producer, and director. Her resume shines with projects like “Poison Ivy”, “Boys On The Side”, “Mad Love”, “Scream”, “Ever After”, “The Wedding Singer”, “50 First Dates”, “Blended”, “Never Been Kissed”, “Charlie’s Angels”, “Music And Lyrics”, and “Santa Clarita Diet”. She made her debut directorial film “Whip It” in 2009. At the moment, she is busy with “The Drew Barrymore Show”, which she hosts and backs as producer. The show brings forward positive stories, humour along with celebrity guest interviews. “I’m just excited to be able to live the real existence that I do when you don’t see me working. This is so true to who I am, but I’ve gone through a real excruciating, uncomfortable metamorphosis doing a show like this. I’m really glad I met this moment in my life and not another, and timing really is everything,” said the 45-year-old. She continued: “I also want to show up and it’s like, when you have your kids and it’s different, but you get asked to be the best version of yourself. And that was something I didn’t take lightly... The entire time was a really incredible and informative journey.” For the show, she looked at her life for inspiration. “I’ve been out there my whole life and I thought one of the things that made me best suited for this job is interacting with people on a daily basis and respecting people and having kindness and patience and respect and dignity and thinking every meeting with someone was an opportunity to hear their story,” she said. The actress, known for her infectious brand of humour, asserted that she is a “people person”. “I just want to take my life experience and talk about it with other people and figure it out together,” she added. Seven Strategies for Highly Effective New Year’s Resolutions
We have just stepped into a new year and there are so many of us who come up with yearly resolutions to be the best version of ourselves. Be it a friend or a family member, there usually is at least one person that definitely asks you about what your resolutions are for the year ahead. 12
JANUARY 2021
www.entertainmentmagazine.ca
W
hether you like to make them or not, research has found that people who make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than people who don’t make resolutions at all. But, we also understand that it’s not so easy to keep your determination intact as life returns to normal just after this holiday mode ends and your old habits of mind and action start testing your resolution, pulling you away from the new ones you resolved to create. But, there’s a science to success when it comes to achieving goals and making life changes – whether on January 1st or any other time of year. We have accumulated some ways and strategies to help you make the changes you want in the year ahead – together with making the right resolutions to begin with. I hope you will read it, but more so, I hope you will apply them and inculcate them to your daily life so that the upcoming year truly becomes the best year of your life. 1. Know Your Why: For any resolution to stick, it has to be aligned with your core values. We all want to achieve a lot of things, so many thoughts about them cross our heads, for example, looking better or getting richer, but your resolutions have to surpass the border line of just being superficial desires and connect with what truly matters most to you. In other words, as we mentioned above, you have to “Know your why” and feel strictly passionate about the goals you set for yourself. If you don’t, then when the going gets tough or your alarm goes off at 5:30am, you won’t have the determination to stick to your plan. You have to connect your resolutions to those things that give you a sense of purpose and at the same time align with your core values. 2. Be Specific: Random resolutions to ‘eat better, get fitter, be happier,
www.entertainmentmagazine.ca
relax more or have better life balance’ are fated for failure because they lack specificity. When it comes to sticking to plans, the more specific you are, it is more likely that you will be able to succeed. Be it just for your own sake but try to describe your goals and resolutions in ways that allow you to track your growth and development and also assess your success. For example, if you want to build a better connection with your partner, try to have at least one date night per month, or, as I’ve decided with my better-half, one weekend away – without our kids - annually. Likewise if you’re committed to a better health and fitness regime, schedule specifically the number of days or workouts you’ll fit into each week. 3. Don’t Just Think It, Ink it: A Stanford University study found that when people wrote down what they exactly want to achieve, it increased the probability of them achieving it by over 70%. But, don’t just write down the specific goal, note down how you will feel when you’ve accomplished it. What you are going to do when you have achieved the goal. When you have finished penning your desires, write them down on sticky notes, in particular the words that inspire you most about your goal and put them around your home/ office to remind you of why you are dedicated to doing what it takes to bring your goal into reality. 4. Design Your Environment: Never underestimate the power of your environment to support or interrupt your success. Design your environment so that it’s hard not to do what you have decided. Create a improvement chart, have someone from your family and friends to be your cheer squad and celebrate your achievements, find someone to hold you accountable, hire a trainer, join a group, create a blog. Similarly, if there are people or things in your life that pull you down or off track, address them directly and set whatever boundaries to keep them away.
5. Narrow Your Efforts: Trying to do too many things at once can make you so unfocused and confused about what you really want and how you are going to achieve it. You won’t even realize which direction you are going in order to achieve the goal. So, set yourself up for success and start with JUST ONE MAJOR responsibility in the first few days. Then gradually, move up the ladder and break your goal down into small steps. Focus on these little steps rather than a strong start! 6. Focus On The Process: It’s easy to get caught up in an early wave of eagerness, only to come crashing down when your initial efforts don’t produce immediate and amazing results. So focus on the process itself, and develop greater ability of the actual activity, habit or skill you want to acquire. For instance, if you want to become fit, focus on being able to jog a little bit further every time you go for a walk, rather than being able to run 10 miles within a week. Remember, PERSISTENCE ALWAYS PAYS OFF. But, you have to never give in! 7. Forgive Your Failures: Your setbacks and failures will not define your success in the year ahead or any year. HOW YOU RESPOND
WILL. If you happen to mess up, lose your determination, press the snooze button or revert to a familiar well-practiced behaviour, don’t stress or beat up on yourself. It is okay, if you didn’t go to the gym like you’d planned. How about indulging in 5 minutes of stretching? When it comes to slipping up and tripping up, you are in good company. It happens to everyone. Just don’t let your mishaps, setbacks and failures mean more than they do. Reflect on the lessons they hold, make adjustments and alterations accordingly and get back in the saddle. Never forget that life rewards those who work at it. By: Nikita Sharma

Back home,
Punjab farmers
adding sweetness to protest
T
he sweet fragrance of gur or jaggery fills the air in fields across Punjab these days with wood-fired stills continuously working to make it ‘immunity’ booster for protesting farmers who have set up vast camps for over a month to mark their protest at the borders of the national capital against new farm laws they say will destroy livelihoods.
He said he’s getting gallons of sugarcane juice daily collected from nearby villages and they are making it extra nutritious by adding a lot of nuts and dried fruits like almonds and species.
Besides jaggery, scores of women and children, preferred to stay back in Punjab, are adding sweetness to the protest by their brethren bitter over the farm laws.
“The sugarcane, dried fruits, species and fuel wood are contributed voluntarily by the villagers,” Singh said.
Every early morning they are assembling voluntarily in gurdwaras and community places for making a traditional Punjabi sumptuous sweet, ‘desi ghee pinnis’, for the farmers braving chilly nights on the border.
“By profession we are farmers, not ‘gur’ sellers. Our brothers and sisters have been stationed on the border to fight a battle to save our livelihoods. Back home, it is our duty to take care of them,” another farmer Rajbir Singh said.
Even the aid is pouring from across the sea. Two US-based NRIs, popularly known as Tut brothers, have sent 30 quintals of almonds for them.
He said a tractor-trailer loaded with ‘gur’ is sent to Delhi borders once in two days through village young volunteers. Like this special one, scores of ‘gur’-making units, run by volunteers, have come up across Punjab.
“We have so far dispatched five tonnes of ‘gur’ especially made for the protesting farmers stationed on the Delhi border,” local farmer Lal Singh, who sets up a still in his fields on the outskirts of Jalandhar town, told in an interview.
Likewise, a group of local women and children assemble in a gurdwara at Nauli village of Jalandhar to roll sumptuous ‘pinnis’ for the protesting farmers. “Our village young men have been tasked to maintain the supply line with the protesting farmers. These ‘pinnis’ are not only for the farmers but also served to the security men stationed there,” remarked octogenarian Sarbajit Kaur. She said all ingredients are voluntarily offered by the local villagers.

Added Nach- attar Singh: “We have another team of men and women stationed along with our protesting brothers and sisters to cook and serve ‘kheer’ daily along with the ‘langar’. For the ‘kheer’, the milk is being provided free by our brothers and sisters from Haryana.” A group of volunteers have been serving almonds among the farmers along the Singhu border. “We came with five quintals of almonds and 10 quintals of ‘gur’ yesterday. After distributing this lot, another lot will be dispatched accordingly,” Paramvir Singh said. While serving a palm full of almonds and a cake of ‘gur’ to a Rapid Action Force (RAF) man, he told in an interview that these almonds have been sent by California-based Tut brothers through their cousins based in Jalandhar. “Jaggery is one of the best natural cleansing agents for our body. In this polluted Delhi, it efficiently cleans our respiratory tract, lungs and the stomach,” remarked Ajmer Singh, a protesting farmer from Ropar district. Source: IANS

day-to-day mental health.
As with physical health, nurturing mental health is an ongoing process; simple daily practices and lifestyle changes can aid in this. Kanchan Rai, Mental and Emotional Wellbeing Coach, Founder - Let Us Talk mentions five lifestyle modifications to get you started: Practice relaxation techniques: While sensory input can release stress in the moment, relaxation techniques facilitate to condense overall stress levels. Practices like meditation, yoga, deep inhalation and progressive muscle relaxation can help put the brakes to anxiety levels and help balance your mind and body. Healthy eating is a go-to option: In order to achieve an optimal brain functioning you must increase the intake of wholefoods
like green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, seafood and lean meat in your diet. These foods encompass magnesium, folate, zinc and vital fatty acids which accelerate cerebral function. Edibles rich in polyphenols, such as wine, dark chocolates and berries are also vital in getting the mind activated. Improving mental well-being through physical activity: Fitness activities to get your body moving can offer an instant mood elevation. Activities that involve social interaction and exposure to nature can possibly help mental well-being even further. Reach out when you need help: Positive lifestyle alterations are not a replacement for medication or therapy but, rather, something you can undertake yourself in addition to treatment. While most lifestyle modifications can be encouraging, some
fluctuations may be challenging if used as a emotional crutch. One might be required to deal with it delicately, and with expert support.
Prioritizing sleep: Along with improving sleep patterns, sleep hygiene techniques also help to treat insomnia. These comprise of limiting caffeine usage, regulating your sleep time, limiting screen time and ensuring you wake up at a similar time in the morning. Never force yourself to sleep, if you are unable to sleep within around 20 minutes, it may be best to get up and focus on an activity until you feel tired. The other mainstay of achieving an enhanced sleep pattern is to limit light exposure. This will surge the emission of melatonin, which aids in sleep. Getting quality sleep is significant for regulating stress levels, thus indirectly mending mind health. Source: IANS

“What does this Frenchman know about football? He wears glasses and looks more like a schoolteacher,” Arsenal captain Tony Adams had remarked derisively when Arsene Wenger arrived in 1996, the first foreigner to be appointed manager of an English football club. By the time he left 22 years later, he had 1,235 matches, three Premier League titles, seven FA Cups and seven Community Shield titles under his belt.
Football
shouldn’t be set in stone:
Arsene Wenger
should be made to evolve towards more transparency in the game. This is essential, and that is why I have chosen to get involved in these changes. By getting football to evolve this way, we can restore it to what it really is: an art, a collective art,” he writes of his new role. “Among my missions at FIFA, there is one that is particularly close to my heart: the training of coaches and the followup with former players who after their careers have ended would be keen to occupy leadership positions in clubs or on football’s official bodies,” he adds.
H
e masterminded the 49-match unbeaten run of “The Invincibles” in 2003-04, a record that stands to this day and saw the club’s share price rise from 800 pounds to a staggering 17,000 pounds. He is perhaps the only manager/coach to have turned down offers from Real Madrid (twice), PSG and Juventus and the national teams of France and Japan all because he “had a mission at Arsenal”.
“My responsibility today is to throw myself completely into this role at FIFA and to convey what I have learnt, especially to those youngsters who ask me: ‘What is a coach? What is a manager?’ Nothing can replace what they will discover for themselves, from their own experiences. But they can reflect on and be enriched by the teachings I have been able to draw out of so many years in the profession and involvement in the world of football,” Wenger writes and then elaborates on this.
And yet, his departure from Arsenal was far from pleasant as Wenger writes in his autobiography, “My Life in Red and White” (Weidenfeld & Nicolson) , translated by Daniel Hahn and Andrea Reece. “Things were getting more and more difficult at Arsenal. The supporters were impatient, the public was turning against me and I had the impression that the general atmosphere was just like the one that had greeted me when I first arrived at the club. I know twenty-two years leading a club is wonderful, but I wasn’t ready to go; if it had been just up to me, I would have stayed until my contract expired. I told myself I had given a lot, sacrificed a lot for the club, and I felt the hostility of a section of the fans and the board was unjustified. I felt as if I had built the training centre and the stadium myself brick by brick, and that my car drove there every morning of its own accord. Not being able to go there from one day to the next, no longer going to the matches, no longer living my passion for the club, was very hard, very brutal. Arsenal was a matter of life and death to me, and without it there were some very lonely, very painful moments,” Wenger writes. From the beginning of the century, he writes, Arsenal “was mirroring what was happening around the world: the structure of football was evolving and we were part of that. Bit by bit, clubs were being purchased by foreign buyers and the Premier League no longer belonged to the English. In 1996, I was the club’s first foreign manager, and we all remember the reactions that provoked. Today, the majority of the managers are foreign, as are the owners.

“For me a coach is somebody who knows what they want, who has a clear vision, a strategy. “Who is capable of expressing it clearly. “Who puts their ideas into practice and is capable of getting their players to support their plans. “So they should be a good communicator.
Only the crowd, the supporters, have not changed. We have moved gradually from supporter-owners to investor-owners, with the new rules this has imposed: all clubs have to become corporate entities. The human aspect has been lost, or at least diminished. “Organisations are more top heavy, and the technical side - the team, the players, the academy - is becoming smaller within companies where the commercial, marketing and press departments take up ever more space. When I started, the club had 70-80 staff, then we went up to 200, 400, up to 700 staff when I left Arsenal in 2018. In the academy alone, there were 200 staff. “When a club, an organisation gets too
big, there is a risk it might lose its performance culture, and instead think more about protecting personal interests and preserving the status quo. As a result, this does not allow any real innovation or genuine risk-taking. “The time available to dedicate to pure technique was reduced. I became more frustrated; it was as if I were being prevented from doing my work while I was doing it,” Wenger writes. If you read between the lines, you will realise he was past his “due date”. Wenger has moved on in life and is today overseeing a larger canvas as FIFA’s Chief of Global Development. “Football should not be set in stone. It
“A coach is somebody who can handle stress, judgement, pressure. Who remains lucid, who in difficult situations in able to take a step back, look at the situation from above. Who does not respond to stress with passivity or aggressiveness,” he writes. “Coaches ought also to be aware of the responsibility that football has, the power this sport has for young people, for society, the appeal it exercises, the fascination, sometimes the devotion it elicits. A coach, then, is someone who has a duty to be equal to this power and to make this game as beautiful as it can be, to show the art of football at its purest,” he concludes. Given the passion he displayed at Arsenal, there is no doubt that Wenger will scale new heights at FIFA. By: Vishnu Makhijani www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

Everything you need to know about gallstones Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji
MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC
Contd. from last edition
The diagnosis of gallstones: 4 Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) 4 Open pop-up dialog box
Tests and procedures used to diagnose gallstones and complications of gallstones include: Abdominal ultrasound: This test is the one most commonly used to look for signs of gallstones. Abdominal ultrasound involves moving a device (transducer) back and forth across your stomach area. The transducer sends signals to a computer, which creates images that show the structures in your abdomen. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS): This procedure can help identify smaller stones that may be missed on an abdominal ultrasound. During EUS your doctor passes a thin, flexible tube (endoscope) through your mouth and through your digestive tract. A small ultrasound device (transducer) in the tube produces sound waves that create a precise image of surrounding tissue. Other imaging tests: Additional tests may include oral cholecystography, a hepatobiliary iminodiacetic acid (HIDA) scan, computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) or endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Gallstones discovered using ERCP can be removed during the procedure. Blood tests: Blood tests may reveal infection, jaundice, pancreatitis or other complications caused by gallstones.
Treatment options for gallstones include: 4 Laparoscopic cholecystectomy 4 Open pop-up dialog box Most people with gallstones that don’t cause symptoms will never need treatment. Your doctor will determine if treatment for gallstones is indicated based on your symptoms and the results of diagnostic testing.
20
JANUARY 2021
Your doctor may recommend that you be alert for symptoms of gallstone complications, such as intensifying pain in your upper right abdomen. If gallstone signs and symptoms occur in the future, you can have treatment. Surgery to remove the gallbladder (cholecystectomy): Your doctor may recommend surgery to remove your gallbladder, since gallstones frequently recur. Once your gallbladder is removed, bile flows directly from your liver into your small intestine, rather than being stored in your gallbladder. You don’t need your gallbladder to live, and gallbladder removal doesn’t affect your ability to digest food, but it can cause diarrhea, which is usually temporary. Medications to dissolve gallstones: Medications you take by mouth may help dissolve gallstones. But it may take months or years of treatment to dissolve your gallstones in this way, and gallstones will likely form again if treatment is stopped. Sometimes medications don’t work. Medications for gallstones aren’t commonly used and are reserved for people who can’t undergo surgery. www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

Ways in which hyaluronic acid benefits your skin Hyaluronic acid has recently become such a hyped ingredient, but the popularity is acceptable because the ingredient provides what it claims to - anti ageing.
W
hat exactly is Hyaluronic acid (HA)? It is simply a sugar that already exists in our skin tissues and with time and age, the content of it keeps on decreasing. It is that part of the skin which helps maintain and retain the moisture and keeps our skin hydrated. It is an extraordinary ingredient and a boon to skincare, says Rajat Mathur, Senior Education Manager at Kiehl’s India.
fine lines and make your skin smoother and help you look younger all day. Similarly, using it at night will cause it to work it magic all night resulting a radiant skin when you wake up in the morning.
What does Hyaluronic acid do? Mathur explains... The skin requires a certain amount of water for it to be healthy and look hydrated and radiant, but the skin tissues lose ability to retain the water with time and age resulting in the skin looking dehydrated and dull. Dehydrated skin, then results in wrinkles and fine lines which automatically make your skin look old, and it losses its firmness too. This is where Hyaluronic acid steps in and works its magic. It is basically an anti-ageing ingredient which does wonders for your skin. It revitalizes not only the outside layer of your skin but the tissues as well increasing the skin immunity, he says. The damage that even the sun does to your skin can be tackled with hyaluronic. Fine lines are such a common effect of exposure to sunlight but using a product with HA in the morning can reduce the appearance of these
www.entertainmentmagazine.ca
Mathur says: “Hyaluronic acid has become so trendy this past year and that is such wonderful news because it is an ingredient that is so important for the skin. People tend to put back the product on the shelf after reading the word ‘acid’ and that stigma shouldn’t be around skincare. Awareness regarding this ingredient is so important and products with hyaluronic acidshould be made a part of your skincare routine to maintain the glow and avoid dullness. It is an ingredient we have included in quite a few of our products here at Kiehl’s too because we want our consumers to fall in love with their skin every single day and HA will only make your skin look younger.” Hyaluronic is a very important skincare ingredient which should be used in your routine regularly to keep the wrinkles and fine lines at bay and your skin glowing and radiant. The basic logic is that if your skin has enough hyaluronic, it will stay moisturized and look healthy but with age, it is necessary that we incorporate products that include this acid in particular to help you keep your skin youthful, glowing and healthy. New Zealand helps turn 2020 disappointments into hope
I
t’s been a tough year, with cancellations, postponements, and missed weddings, graduations, birthdays and celebrations. As the first country in the world to welcome in 2021, New Zealand is well placed to make sure that it starts off with a dose of positivity. Tourism New Zealand is partnering with Trees That Count to build a Forest of Hope. Share your disappointment from 2020 and they will help to turn it into hope by planting a native tree. Give back to yourself, gift a tree to a friend, or simply better the environment by purchasing a tree for $10NZD. When travellers are able to travel again, they can visit the tree that they helped grow, either in Northland or Queenstown. Forest of Hope went live on December 2 at 3 am NZT / December 1 at 7.30 pm IST and went on till December 31, 2020. Trees That Count is a conservation charity that started in November 2016. Their vision is to help plant 200 million native trees across the country, done through a community marketplace that connects tree funders to tree planters. Since they started, they have planted over 32,432,000 trees. That’s a lot of trees! Over 50 years, these native trees have the potential to remove a lot of the carbon dioxide that would otherwise be sitting in our atmosphere, estimated between 5 to over 7 million tonnes of it.
www.entertainmentmagazine.ca
Over 500,000 trees have been gifted since it started, with over 500 planting projects taking place and almost 15,000 funders and planters lending their support. Trees That Count is New Zealand’s community marketplace to connect tree funders and planters. Becoming a part of this movement is contributing to an initiative that will make a lasting difference to New Zealand and benefits the climate of the world over. One of the best actions we can take to tackle climate change and to improve our environment is to plant more native trees. Watch the Forest of Hope video and motivate yourself and those around you to plant some seeds of hope. Commenting on the partnership with Tourism New Zealand, CEO Adele Fitzpatrick, Trees That Count says: “Our partnership with Tourism NZ will enable us to extend our optimism for the environment to audiences outside of New Zealand, with the message that native trees are part of our culture, wellbeing and future prosperity. Native trees are one of the most powerful tools we have available to help fight climate change while protecting our unique biodiversity, and it reinforces existing international visions of Aotearoa as a country of breath-taking natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and unique experiences keyed to nature.” Source: IANS

n this month’s article, we will be discussing a very important disease that is known to be found in felines. We aim that this article will especially be helpful towards our readers who are pregnant or know of those who are expecting. Being well informed in this topic will allow yourself or others you know to be more equipped with how to practice precautions with your pet cat at home during this important time. Toxoplasmosis is a disease that is mainly caused by a well-known parasite called, Toxoplasma gondii. This parasite is able to affect not only animals, but also humans. Hence, it is known as a zoonotic disease. The concerning fact of this disease is that at many times if your cat is infected, she or he may not even show any symptoms at all. Consequently, this allows owners to feel at ease and let their guard down on precautions that should be taken. Therefore, being infected themselves by silent carriers. According to the statistics done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is recorded that approximately more than 60 million people in North America are suspected to be dealing with toxoplasmosis, whether silently or blatantly. When it comes to the life cycle of Toxoplasma gondii, many characters can be involved. Your cat can become infected by ingesting raw meat or an outdoor wild prey that contains Toxoplasma gondii organisms already in it. This parasite targets the gastrointestinal system of the feline.
“TOXOPLASMOSIS IN CATS”
Hence, this is why a form of the parasite is commonly shed then in the feces of your cat. The contaminated feces can be ingested by a mouse and then in return spread to another healthy cat when it is hunted down and eaten. Or those who handle the litter boxes of infected felines and do not regularly wash their hands, maintaining good hygiene, can also acquire this condition zoonotically. Felines who are raised
on farmland with other farm animals can also spread this disease through their feces to animals (cattle, sheep, pigs) that ingest it accidentally. This again can cause potential harm and exposure to personals handling farm animals without proper cleaning protocols.
If your cat is infected with Toxoplasma gondii, it is possible that it may present to be asymptomatic. However, it is also common to see signs, such as: lethargy, fever and loss of appetite, anorexia, diarrhea, eye issues and even neurological signs like an unusual walk or seizures, etc. If you feel that your pet is exhibiting any of the forementioned symptoms, please contact your veterinarian immediately and have your cat examined professionally. A diagnosis for toxoplasmosis can be established by taking the cat’s full history, the symptoms shown and the results found after performing a few laboratory tests. Cats infected with Toxoplasma gondii will reveal high levels of two types of antibodies known as IgG and IgM. Tissue samples can be taken from your cat and examined under a microscope to see the presence of When officially diagnosed for toxoplasmosis by your veterinarian, he will most likely prescribe a specific antibiotic course of treatment known as Clindamycin. If there are other complications or symptoms showing, your veterinarian will also focus on giving a specific treatment plan towards healing them. The outcome of this condition’s prognosis will be better if treatment is started earlier rather than later. Two categories of individuals that are at most risk from toxoplasmosis are pregnant women and individuals who have weaker immune systems for whatever health reasons. These two populations of people can have detrimental outcomes from being exposed to Toxoplasma gondii. For pregnant women, this parasite can

provide the greatest concern of all. Expecting mothers should avoid changing litter boxes of their pet cats during their course of pregnancy. Other individuals within the household should be given this duty and should be aware of properly cleaning their hands and the box. If there is no one else to do this, then it is strongly advised that gloves be worn when cleaning. Majority of women who become infected while pregnant will not necessarily exhibit any signs, however it can affect their children developing inside the womb. Many of these children will be asymptomatic at the time of birth; however, may show signs later on in life, such as: mental retardation, blindness, deafness or even death. Pregnant women and immunodeficient individuals are the two populations most at risk of developing health problems after T. gondii exposure. In utero infection is of the greatest concern in humans. Between one-third and one-half of infants born to mothers who acquired Toxoplasma during pregnancy are infected. The vast majority of women infected during pregnancy have no symptoms themselves, and the majority of infected infants will show no symptoms of toxoplasmosis at birth. Many of these children, however, are likely to develop signs of infection later in life, including loss of vision and hearing, mental retardation, and, in severe cases, death. For those who are immunodeficient, this parasite can cause complications of enlarged lymph nodes or even disturbances in almost any other organ system of the body. There is unfortunately no vaccination that can help protect you or your pets from toxoplasmosis. It is a disease of which necessary well-informed awareness and precautions must be taken.

Must-know financial terms for every millennial
We have all been in situations that make us feel like we are back in our school classrooms - from eating at our desks to snapping to attention when seniors pass by. But as an adult one of the most common situations we have endured is drawing a blank when a certain financial term comes up in conversation that we are unsure of.
W
hether you are early into your professional life or well a few years into it, it is important to be aware of terms related to money management. With finances being central to the life we lead and the lifestyle we aspire to lead, it is important that we equip ourselves with sufficient knowledge in order to start our journey towards taking control of our finances. Here is a roundup of terms that you should be aware to make the most of your financial journey Compounding: This is one of the fundamental concepts in growing wealth and is basically the interest accumulating on the money you have deposited. For example, you have deposited one lakh in the bank and you get an interest of Rs 10,000 for the first year. For the second year, assuming you do not add on more investment amount and the interest rate remains the same, the interest amount generated would be Rs 11,000 as the first year’s interest has generated additional interest in the next year. Compound Interest is based on the same concept and is a means to make your money work hard for you. Credit Score: This score is important in determining an individual’s creditworthiness. It varies from 300-900 and a higher score is achieved by cultivating healthy financial habits- timely repayment of EMIs and dues, no default on loans, avoid taking too much debt at one time, regular checking of your score to ensure no errors are being made. These are some of the habits that ensure you have a good credit score. This is important as it is analysed by banks when you approach them for a

loan and could be your trusted tool during emergencies. Asset allocation: It is basically where you choose to put your money, dividing it between risks and rewards. Your financial portfolio division should be based on short- and long-term goals along with your risk appetite and time sphere. The three major asset classes include equity (stocks), fixed income (bonds) and cash (cash equivalents). Your choice of investment could also be other physical assets like real estate which is considered “safer” by many. All of these are subject to market fluctuations over time hence put in some research when allocating your assets. Capital Gains: This is simply the value increase of an asset or investment, like real estate or stocks, over time above its original purchase value. Keep in mind that the gain comes to fruition only when the asset is sold. The flip side of this is “Capital Loss” where there is a decrease in the value of the asset since its purchase.
individual’s credit profile and an interest would be levied only on the amount utilized. This is best suited for short term requirements as a personal loan is suited for larger amounts or more pressing needs.

Rebalancing: This is the periodic practice of bringing your assets back to the desired percentage. For example, if your current asset distribution is 40 per cent stocks, 30 per cent bonds and 30 per cent cash and you would like to leverage the stock market when it is doing well, you could relocate it to 60 per cent stocks, 20 per cent bonds and 20 per cent cash. Rebalancing could be necessary in order to ensure you meet your financial goals. Come winter, we are faced with huge piles of clothes that just refuse to fit into assigned spaces in our wardrobes. While we look forward to the season to wear amazing jackets, sweaters, denim etc this year we also have the additional consideration of keeping our winter wear disinfected.
Keeping your winter garments
healthy and germ-free
M
ost of the heavy garments we use are not of the ‘wash after every wear’ variety. The continuous tension of cleaning and disinfecting our surrounding and clothes is a serious and tedious task, especially when stepping out of our homes has increased manifolds. Here are some easy hacks to manage and disinfect our winter garments: Purge - While we all have out routines of transitioning our wardrobes from summer clothes to winter clothes, we often forget to sift out the
clothes we are done with. It is hard yes. One often feels ‘Maybe I’ll wear it with something else’, ‘Maybe I’ll use it at home’ etc, but do we really? Purging always helps. Separate fresh clothes from the ones that have been worn before - Having an assigned rack space or hanger space to hand jackets/sweaters that are used on the regular helps to separate them from the garments that are only used on occasion. Especially this year, creating this designated space frees up the mind from clothes and disinfection management worries. You know where each item belongs, and you don’t need to mess up the section of clothes not used often. Keep a clothes spray handy -- Every time we come home from outside, the hand washing ritual has become sacrosanct. We usually go straight in to the shower and add the clothes we have been wearing to the ‘to be washed’ pile. This doesn’t work for winter clothes though does it? In the area designated for ‘already worn’ garments, keep a clothes disinfectant spray like the one from Savlon handy. This products doesn’t need any water for use, disinfects clothes in-between washes while also leaving a fresh smell behind. And it is completely safe for all a wide variety of materials (like shirts, pants, jackets, kurtas, etc). Instant rescue.
The steam in the bathroom helps remove creases from velvet, mildly disinfects and adds new life to the garment. 4 Allow 24 hours before wearing wool items you have already worn again to get rid of wrinkles and allow the elasticity of the knit to bounce back. This also gives enough time for your clothes spray to work its magic into the garment. 4 Triple fold cashmere items so there is no middle fold visible and put it back in the cupboard wrapped in a sheet of paper with some mild clothes fragrance pouch. This helps keep the garment fresh and last longer. 4 When throwing winter garments into the washing machine, remember to not mix wool with denim etc. Use a clothes disinfectant liquid for the final rinse cycle to ensure maximum germ protection. Keep calm and disinfect on. Source: IANS
Here are a few more cool tricks: 4 If you have garments in velvet, hang them in the bathroom inside out, after you have taken a hot shower.

Moreover, having that special work station that is not only fun but also with the right kind of decor to help your days and evenings, will be fruitful in getting through the week.
T
ry out these seven simple updates to your work space, shared by Vishal Kaul - Vice President - Lighting, Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals Ltd, to turn your corner into something you actually enjoy working in.
Make way for brightness:
Lighting has become an essential part of our lives where it can augment the space we are living in and completely transform the mood and ambience. Lighting is more

Amp up your WFH corner in 7 simple steps than just filling a dark room as it will affect your productivity, work performance and depending on how tired your eyes are, they can get tired faster in weak light. While natural lighting is great, it does not survive the long hours especially when work moves into the night and can cause eye strain. Moreover, adding the right kind of lights can also, in turn, enhance your space décor adding more value to your room. Hence a bright workspace can make a significant difference to your health, budget and mood. Thus, one should go for LED light panels that ensure maximum brightness. Some panels have ultra slim rims that are quite stylish and seamlessly fit into your ceilings turning your WFH corner into one of the brightest spots in the room!
Bring your walls to life
One can go for wallpapers, paintings or photos with some motivational quotes that can be attached on the walls to keep you going and focused. You can also accentuate certain objects, cabinets, pictures or points on your wall for that dramatic effect through lights. By lighting up these areas with bright LED panels, it an enhance your work space and prevent
any dark shadows that can cause a hindrance, enhancing more luminous and stylish walls.
Lamp up your focus
For a brighter and focused illumination, invest in some task lighting by opting for desk lamps. Consider a good table lamp with a functionality of changing colours and light intensity or portable table lamps that not only prevent disturbing other family members during extended working hours but also reduces eye strain. And if one experiences a power cut, always have a back-up lamp to let you work / study uninterruptedly.
Get a pop of colours going
Environment impacts creativity. Embrace colours in your WFH corner for an instant burst of creativity and fun. From grabbing a favourite pillow, attaching some pastel-coloured lamps, bringing some funky coffee/tea mugs to even adding some life by lighting a fragrant candle, keep the space lively to make you feel livelier.
Break the monotony of your seating
Working at one place for long hours can be exhausting. Even if you sit at one corner for long, your mind and body will crave for a change and a
break from the mundane. Hence, try accent chairs, bean bags, floor cushions etc. Shift your body to a comfortable seating for just about 20 minutes or so and get back to your desk to avoid postural issues.
Add a touch of green with some good ol’ plants
The green hues of a plant always tend to add a positive vibe. Bring some mini plants or succulents etc. that immediately brighten up the corner. If your desk isn’t big, you can hang some plants on the window curtain rods/ window sills or go for a large plant on the side to give you the zest to work better.
Sneak in some luxury and accessorize
Luxury comes in many forms. Once you declutter your space to make it more efficient, add in a few accessories that are hard to come by when you’re in the office. From an aromatherapy diffuser to a gorgeouslydesigned digital calender table lamp that can highlight your area; even a small board with pins and anything else that helps make your space more organised, aesthetic and colourful to look and help keep you motivated and energetic through the day. Tom Cruise takes early break from ‘Mission Impossible’ shoot after Covid meltdown?
T
he actor lost his temper with crew several times over the unit’s failure to follow Covid guidelines. This led to five staff members quitting, reports thesun.co.uk.
“It has been exhausting keeping the production on track for so long, and it’s not getting any easier – Christmas can’t come soon enough. Tom had decided he’s was ready for a break and is now going to wind up filming for 2020 and then decided to fly to Miami over the weekend on his private jet to spend Christmas with his son,” said a source. “It’s the end of a really tough year, and a bit of time out seems like a good idea for everyone as tensions have been mounting for a while,” added the source. Earlier last month, thesun.co.uk reported how the actor lost his cool after two crew members broke Covid rules by standing too close together. Another eruption took place on the sets and the news of his rant surfaced again. A source said: “The first outburst was big but things haven’t calmed since. Tension has been building for months and this was the final straw. Since it became public there has been more anger and several staff have walked.”
Cruise, who plays super spy Ethan Hunt and is a producer of the film, has reportedly spent a lot of money to ensure Covid measures are followed. They include hiring a cruise ship so staff can isolate. In October, he had crisis talks with director Christopher McQuarrie days

The hottest Winter Fashion trends from head to toe
A
s the runways have revealed the best of fashion, the hottest winter trends are quickly making their way to racks and hangers at stores. To make the best choices and pick out the hottest trends of this season, here is a guide to tell you what is ruling the world of fashion in the fall and winter of 2019.
1. Puff up those
6. Sequins in the sequence
the
shoulders Puffed powder shoulders and sleeves that are bold and extravagant reel in an element of confidence that you can never say no to. This trend can be embraced in any way, on shirts, dresses, or on statement making blazers and jackets. Try this trend with some bright colours, especially bright yellow, which was also a hit this season. 2. The bigger the bag, the better Thanks to the popularity of tote bags in the last couple of years, the favoured types of bags are shifting from the smaller ones to big bags. These range from jumbo size hand bags to huge totes to also gym style duffel bags. Find the best match to your outfit and get strutting. 3. Show some skin (on the ankles) As the days and nights get colder, we often cover ourselves completely from head to toe, and

for
right reasons. But the catwalks have inspired all of us to show some ankles by wearing hemlines on outfits, ranging from skirts to pants. This creates a very graceful and elegant look, and you have to try it for your next dinner party! 4. Cosy up with the capes The retro vibe in latest trends has been undeniable, and this trend plays on the vintage vibe heavily by introducing rug like capes that keep you warm while giving your body a unique silhouette of straight lines. If you are looking for a new coat this season, our recommendation would be to switch to a cape altogether. 5. Need more neutrals Neutral colours like beige, nude, mild browns, and all their stunning varied shades are once again the talk of the town: but to do it right there is a catch. To do the neutral look, you have to commit to it entirely and only wear shades of neutral beige. So, have some fun and play around with different shades and tints of the same colour.
This is no boring fall, and to match the heat you better line up some sequinstudded attires in your rotation. The runways showed us the way and now the streets have caught up, sequins are the best way to brighten up the winters that can sometimes get lazy and boring. Jazz up simple outfits with a statement piece full of shiny sequins, or find yourself a bold showstopper piece. 7. Hotter with the headgear Hats and caps and scarves are all mandatory to finish your look this season because balance is key, and your look should be well put together and coordinated from head to toe. You can either go the basic chic route and coordinate your headgear, and if you want to be experimental you can make it the statement piece of your look. While the trends are always here to guide you, fashion is always personal and intuitive. Jazz up every trend with your personal style, and always express yourself with your clothing choices.

Simple ways in which you can
reduce stress W
e lead a fast-paced life these days. And stress has become an integral part of it. From the daily commute to work, and the constant FOMO, there are a lot of things that add to stress and it is fast emerging as one of the major reasons affecting the health of people around the world. The American Medical Association has even identified stress as the cause of more than 60 per cent of all human illness. High levels of stress can lead to heart disease, intestinal problems, diabetes and even cancer. Here are a few ways in which you can cut down stress in daily life.
Meditation The ancient practice of meditation has stood the test of time. Indian yogis and sages have been meditating for centuries. Mediation is, in fact, a way of life which teaches you to focus on the present moment and cut out all the thoughts that crowd our heads. Yoga says that to achieve the true states of meditation, you need to go through several stages like physical position, breath control, relaxation and the advanced stages of concentration, contemplation and absorption. Mediation helps you relax, and focus on the moment, while ridding your mind of the stream of thoughts that cause stress.
Deep breaths
www.entertainmentmagazine.ca
While meditation involves slow and relaxed breathing, deep breathing involves contraction of the diaphragm. When you take deep breaths, air enters the lungs and your chest rises and the belly expands. Deep breathing, says The American Institute of Stress, is the body’s natural relaxation response. This technique helps combat stress by reducing the heart rate and lowering blood pressure. Taking deep breaths activates the hypothalamus, to send out neurohormones that keep stressproducing hormones at bay and triggers a relaxation technique in the body. It allows the lungs to take in more oxygen, slowing down the heartbeat and lowering the blood pressure, making you feel relaxed.
Stretching
Music
Laugh
Music is a great way to calm down and improve your mood. It is a recognised form of therapy. The National Center for Biotechnology Information, conducted a psychosocial stress test on 60 healthy female volunteers in 2013. They were randomly assigned to one of three different conditions prior to the stress test—relaxing music, the sound of rippling water and rest without acoustic stimulation. The findings indicated that listening to music impacted the psychobiological stress system, and those who listened to relaxing music recovered from stress faster compared to the other groups.
Laughter is the best medicine when it comes to reducing stress. A 2008 study by researchers at the American Physiological Society, investigating the interaction between the brain, behaviour and the immune system found that simply anticipating laughter boosted health protecting hormones and significantly brings down the levels of stress hormones. A hearty laugh will lighten your mood, increase your intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulate the heart, lungs and muscles and boost the endorphin levels released by the brain. It stimulates circulation and relaxes the muscles, reducing the physical symptoms of stress. Courtesy: FEMINA
When you are stressed, the blood flow in the body is restricted. As a result, there will be knots in the muscles in the shoulders and neck. Your joints and back will hurt, and the body will become stiffer. When you stretch, it simulates the receptors in the nervous system that bring down the production of stress hormones. According to the Mayo Clinic, stretching increases the blood flow to the muscles. This, in turn, improves blood circulation. So the muscles become relaxed, and heart health and cardiovascular functions vastly improve. Stretching also increases the circulation of new blood to the brain, improving your mood.

Natalie Portman was bullied for being a child actor Natalie Portman opened up how she was bullied in school for being a child actress, while she spoke to actress Drew Barrymore. The two actresses were discussing their experiences as child stars.
“I read this thing about how you didn’t have an easy time in school because you would go out to movies and then come back and just have an awkward time with the other kids at school... I haven’t really read that from a lot of people and that was totally my experience, I really related to that,” Portman said, while speaking on The Drew Barrymore Show, reports femalefirst. co.uk. She added: “I mean I think people get bullied for all sorts of reasons and that’s a lucky reason to be bullied for because you are doing something that you love, I mean if you are doing something that you love. I do think that that sort of creates your empathy like being on that side of the teasing certainly makes you never want to make anyone feel like that ever again.” Barrymore was a child actor and starred with Portman in the 1996 film, “Everyone Says I Love You”. Portman shared that she found the experience tough. Barrymore said: “The irony is that they would always say to me, ‘You think you’re so special’. And I really read that in what you said in the copy and I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh that’s exactly what they would say to me’ and

I had talked to Baljit on Sunday evening. He asked me to maintain the same statements that we had given in the embassy. Neither Baljit had told the truth to his parents, nor could I tell anyone to avoid embarrassment. I didn’t want to hurt my mother-in-law anymore by sharing another sorrow. I told the lawyer as we had planned. The lawyer began filing our case. I restarted my IELTS preparation. I had also fallen in love with reading the atlas. I read Metro and 24 hours local newspapers. I read online www. tribuneindia.com and learned great new ideas every day. I took everything very seriously what I read. I began to see everything retrospectively too. I read editorials in newspapers and magazines that made me realize this world was full of intellectual people who were capable of putting everything in black and white. The more I read, the more I knew myself. Some writers were able to support both sides of an issue very convincingly. Wow! What a great feeling I had when I fell in love with reading and pondering over quality

stuff. I was enjoying a lot while preparing for the IELTS exam. While studying I realized that one section of people in the world had nothing to say. But they spoke just to make their presence felt. The second group was of those people who saw only weak points of people. The third group of people was who was trying to find solutions of public problems by analyzing them and going public. The fourth group was a small one that was always busy in helping people quietly. “Why doesn’t every person realize others’ pain and at least sympathize with others? If we guided others, nothing could be better than that.”, I was contemplating. The other day, we learned that Meenu was pregnant. Our allfamily members celebrated this news. All of us began caring for Meenu even more than before. I was working very hard on my English. I had made my routine to watch news on BBC, CNN besides some other channel news. The other day I read a tip that one should repeat what one hears on the IELTS CDs. I began doing so. There was considerable improvement in my English
accent. Sometimes even bhaji used to comment that I spoke English like a Canada-born person. I booked my IELTS exam date. Meenu was learning how to drive. Soon she learned how to drive and got class-five driving licence in about two months. Meenu sometimes came home early from work because of her pregnancy. She was in the sixth month of her pregnancy. The other day, I received a call from Surrey Memorial Hospital. I picked up the phone. I received the call. I almost passed out. Meenu was coming home from work. She had met with an accident while turning left at an intersection of the Scott road and Nordel way. “What happened, Sonia?”, mom asked me “Mom…mom…Meenu…”, I was unable to speak a full sentence even.

Ayurvedic
home remedies to shield your lungs
T
It is now known that Covid-19, which is a respiratory system-related disease, weakens the lungs of those who contract it. The pollution and dust while frequently stepping out can make the breathing process difficult for many. According to Dr Partap Chauhan, Director, Jiva Ayurveda, the chemical in the smog gets deposited within the respiratory tract and causes symptoms like wheezing, breathlessness, suffocation, and heaviness in the chest. “This is caused by the accumulation of Kapha Dosha in the body. Other than an increase in air pollution, tobacco smoking, use of coal for cooking, construction work and indoor pollutants (radon gas) are all causes of bronchitis, cancer, and other serious respiratory disorders.”
“Air pollution aggravates the imbalance in Prana Vata and Shleshaka Kapha, which leads to the production of shleshma (mucus) and settles in the nasal area and clogs the channels of the sinuses. Due to the underlying imbalance in Prana Vata and Shleshaka Kapha, Sinus is caused,” he adds. The ayurveda expert lists herbs and Ayurvedic home remedies that protect and strengthen your lungs and keep your respiratory system healthy: Kavala (oil pulling): Kavala or Gandusha is a process of gargling with oil. Usually, sesame oil is used for the process. This process cleanses the throat of phlegm, clears the sinuses and reduces the risk of allergic reaction in the respiratory system. Take a small amount of any edible oil, sesame or sunflower, and swish around your mouth for a few minutes and spit out. Repeat this process every morning for a few days. Lung Toner Ayurvedic Tea: Take 3-4 tulsi leaves, a small www.entertainmentmagazine.ca
amount of mulethi and pipali, blend and boil them in water until it is reduced to half. Strain the water in a cup and add mishri (cane sugar). Sip the tea warm. This will cleanse the lungs and liquefy the Kapha. Ghee in Nostrils: Dip your little finger in liquid ghee and massage each nostril. Sniff deeply allowing the ghee to get inside the nasal passage. You may also lie down and pour 2-3 drops in each nostril. This helps in clearing the nasal congestion and balancing Kapha. Vasp Swedana (inhaling steam): Mucosal secretions produced in the nose and throat expel pollutants, smoke and dirt particles that are inhaled daily. Vasp Swedana is an Ayurvedic process that keeps the mucosal layer healthy. You can do it at home; in 1 litre of steaming water, add 2-3 drops of Eucalyptus or peppermint oil and inhale the steam. Pranayama: Pranayama helps in increasing the capacity of the lungs and boosts your immunity to fight lung diseases. Practicing Kapalbhati helps in relieving shortness of breath, congestion in the chest and clears mucus in the air passage. Ujjayi, Shitali and Anulom Vilom are some other Pranayama techniques that will help in keeping your lungs healthy. Source: IANS

clothing fits you well, and your shoes are shined. If you are unsure about what to wear, email or call the person who scheduled the interview and ask about the typical dress code. It is always a good idea to dress just a little bit more professionally than the dress code requires. Your goal is to make the best impression possible. How to Handle the Day of the Interview It is very important to be on time for the interview. On time means ten to 15 minutes early. If need be, take some time to drive to the office ahead of time or check out other options for getting there so you know exactly where you are going, how long it will take to get there, and what the transportation and parking situation looks like. If you’re running late you’ll be stressed, and that’s no way to start an interview for what could be your new job. Interview Etiquette Remember that it’s not only the hiring manager who makes the decision on who to hire. Be polite and gracious to everyone you meet from the time you walk in the door to when you leave. The people you meet could be your future co-workers, so make the best impression on them that you can. When you arrive, introduce yourself to the receptionist. Make sure you know the interviewer’s name and use it as soon as possible during the interview. If you’re not sure of the name, call and ask prior to the interview. Also, remember to take a extra copy of your resume, a list of references, and any work samples you want to show the employer. Bring a list of questions to ask the interviewer. It’s a good idea to bring a notepad and pen to take notes. Stay calm and avoid stress! Good luck! By: Kirti Bhasin

The pandemic has indeed harmed the progress of the society, of the common man. These crises have however led to some metamorphosis in the system as a response. One such innovation has been acknowledged by the longawaited Permanent Residents of Canada who has been aspiring to become Canadian Citizens. The human race has been ungrateful to the Earth for a very long time; we have done irrevocable damage and now we have no choice but to aggressively advocate for better treatment of the motherland that births and nourishes all of us. The resolution you truly need and cannot do without this year is to be a better Earth advocate in 2021, and if you are looking for meaningful inspiration then look no further. which entails several milestones. To succeed and arrive at the end of the journey, it is crucial to celebrate the first compost pit you make, the first time you create no waste in a day, when you officially switch to reusable containers, and everything else! Every step has a huge impact, so you must celebrate it! 2. Always stay positive
4. Understand the battles others fight It is important to be understanding and compassionate through the transformation of becoming a better Earth advocate as everyone does not have the same resources or capacity to make the changes you are making. Be respectful of others’ wishes, dietary needs and
As you set out on any challenge, you should expect some resistance from your old habits. This shouldn’t put you down, but rather remind you why you started in the first place. It is much easier to learn by example, and one person has to do it for everyone else.
