Miss Philippines crowned Miss Universe
A
26-year-old actress and model from the Philippines was crowned Miss Universe on 20th December after host Steve Harvey mistakenly first announced that Miss Colombia had won the 64th edition of the pageant broadcast live on the Fox television network. Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, a Filipino-German actress and model born in Stuttgart and raised in Cagayan de Oro, was announced as runner-up to Miss Colombia, before Harvey announced to the audience that he had made a mistake. Ariadna Gutierrez Arévalo, 21, of Sincelejo, Colombia, had already been
crowned by Miss Universe of 2014, Paulina Vega of Barranquilla, Colombia, who was forced to remove the crown and give it to Miss Philippines. Olivia Jordan, 27, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, finished third. “I’d like to apologize wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines for my huge mistake,” Harvey said on Twitter. “I feel terrible.” When asked why she wanted to be Miss Universe, Wurtzbach replied that, “I will use my voice to influence the youth and I would raise awareness to certain causes like HIV awareness, that is timely and relevant to my country.” It was the first Miss Universe title for a
contestant from the Philippines in more than 40 years. Among the more notable moments, Flora Coquerel of France, who was at the Paris stadium the night of the November attacks by militant Islamists, reached the final five and Ariana Miyamoto of Japan, whose father is African-American, reached the top 10 contestants. The pageant was held at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. For the first time, viewers had a chance to vote on the winner, rating contestants in the swimwear, evening gown and interview competitions. Until recently, the pageant was co-owned by Comcast
Corp’s NBC Universal and Trump, who is leading national polls in the 2016 Republican presidential nomination race. Earlier, Trump’s remarks about Mexicans in announcing his presidential candidacy in June drew sharp criticism, and the Spanish-language network Univision pulled out of a deal to televise the pageant. The panel of judges included former National Football League great Emmitt Smith, celebrity blog mogul Perez Hilton and 2012 Miss Universe winner Olivia Culpo. Hilton, a Miss USA judge, said the two most important things about the pageant were the vastly larger audience and that Trump was no longer owner.

By Surinder Shaun Kochhar
IF YOU DON’T FOLLOW YOUR OWN DREAMS, YOU WILL END UP WORKING FOR SOMEONE FOLLOWING THEIRS! This duo of Sandhu Brothers – S Gurdev Singh Sandhu (Developer) and Dale Sandhu (Realtor – Sutton Group West Coast Realty) decided to pursue their dreams rather than to raise their glasses for others. High fat diet can combat schizophrenia
S
chizophrenia is a devastating, chronic mental illness that affects nearly one percent of people worldwide. There is no cure and medications used to alleviate it and can produce side effects such as movement disorder, weight gain and cardiovascular disease. The researchers discovered that feeding mice a ketogenic diet, which is high on fat but very low on carbohydrates (sugars), leads to fewer animal behaviours that resemble schizophrenia. The ketogenic diet has been used since the 1920s to manage epilepsy in children and more recently as a weight loss diet preferred by some body builders. The diet may work by providing alternative energy sources in the form of so-called ketone bodies (products of fat breakdown) and by helping to circumvent abnormally functioning cellular energy pathways in the brains of schizophrenics, said one of the researchers Zoltan Sarnyai from James Cook University in Queensland, Australia. “Most of a person’s energy would come from fat. So the diet would consist of butter, cheese, salmon, etc. Initially it would be used in addition to medication in an in-patient setting where the patient’s diet could be controlled,” Sarnyai explained. The study also showed mice on a ketogenic diet weigh less and have lower blood glucose levels than mice fed a normal diet. The findings were published online in the journal Schizophrenia Research.

K
ids Play Youth Foundation is a registered society which commenced it’s operations in the month of June 2015, and prior to that operated with PALS Society of Canada. The initiative of this program is to develop skills in our youth that will assist them in becoming successful leaders and innovators of the future. Kids Play is working towards keeping kids away from the lifestyle that includes drugs, gangs, and violence. Kids Play holds sports tournaments, conferences, and other projects for the youth community to provide them with opportunities to lead healthy life styles. The organization is operated by leaders from all across the Lower Mainland wanting to bring a positive change within the community. Kids Play believes their work will allow the youth to discover the potential they have within themselves to reach greater heights in any aspect of life. Their vision is to create young leaders within the community through involvement in sports and other recreational activities and wants the youth to obtain opportunities that will allow them to excel in all aspects of life. Their mission is to organize sports tournaments, conferences, and other projects to keep them away from the lifestyle including drugs, gangs, and violence. Each month the program brings to the community resourceful events in the form of educational forums and sports activities. Richmond saw its first ever Western Canada Age Class Wrestling Championships take place at the Richmond Olympic Oval from January 1617, 2015. This Wrestling BC sanctioned event saw almost 800 school age athletes travel to Richmond to compete in two days of youth competitions. Youth of all ages competed in the 12 and under division, all the way up to the juvenile division for 17 and 18 year olds. Kids Play was proud to be a part of this historic event. In March, Kids Play hosted it’s first 3 on 3 Indoor Soccer Classic which took place on March 8th and 9th at the Guru Angad Dev Elementary. Support from community members and local businesses played a huge role in the success of this event. The volunteers put in tremendous amounts of hard work to run the event which had over 400 kids participating. One of the White Caps players, Derrick Bassi, who helped to coordinate and execute this event and also spoke to the players and audience

about the importance of sports and how engagement in recreational activities keeps children off the streets and helps instill valuable lessons in their lives. BC Tigers Soccer Club, the largest soccer club of the Lower Mainland, helped to host the event. Free hot lunch was served to everyone – players, volunteers, sponsors, and spectators. In the same month, Kids Play conducted a forum on Anti-Racism with a partner organisation to spread awareness on the ongoing problem of various forms of discrimination. The forum took place on March 21st at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. The event was a houseful with over 200 guests attending it. Prominent members of the society spoke to the audience about creating awareness about the issues prevailing in the society. Member of Legislative Assembly, Hon. Amrik Virk, and Member of Parliament, Jinny Sims also attended the event and said a few words on the various forms and effects of discrimination. Hon. Amrik Virk recognized the efforts of Kids Play’s executive founder, Kal Dosanjh, for his community work and his passion for serving his people through programs which intend to bring about positive changes in the society. For Vaisakhi, in April, Kids Play volunteers got together to represent the organisation in the parade. Everyone wore Kids Play shirts and walked together for the entire day with the parade to aware people of the new opportunities available for the youth. They also teamed up with a law enforcement agency to unfold the largest program of the year for the youth – Kids PlayPAL Youth Soccer Tournament held at BC Place Stadium. Over 1000 youth from elementary schools in the Downtown Eastside participated in the tournament. They had over 80 volunteers from Kids Play, and other non – profit organizations

from the lower mainland. The efforts of the volunteers made this event one to remember. These young students participated in competitive soccer and learnt the opportunities to become leaders and athletes within their communities. For the month of June, Kids Play partnered up with Universal Athletics Club and held a Track and Field meet. The target audiences were the children and families of the Lower Mainland. The event was held at Bear Creek Park on June 27 and 28. Like all other Kids Play events, this event was also free for all attendees. There were over a hundred youth participants at the meet. In August, Kids Play partnered up with BCMCL to bring to the community a cricket tournament. Players from all over BC, along with their families to enjoyed a friendly tournament. The event was an extraordinary success and the plans of holding it annually are gradually coming in place. This would not have been possible without Jimmy Hansraj and all the members of the league! A shout out to our sponsors and volunteers who have made it possible to serve the community in an exceptional manner. In September, they conducted two events– Sports Awards Gala and 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament which went very well. For the basketball tournament, Kids
Play partnered up with another nonprofit organisation, SOAR Philanthropic Society – this organisation provides scholarships to students aspiring to attend post – secondary. Kids Play is providing the organisation with a thousand dollars to fund a scholarship for 2016. At the Sports Awards Gala, young athletes were recognised for their achievements. The purpose of this event was to appreciate those who are representing the community in a positive manner and to encourage those who are yet to be a part of such endeavours to pave their paths in similar directions to attain success. They held an anti-Drug Gang Conference in October with over 400 youth in attendance. The target audience was youth along with families to aware them of the lifestyle of drugs and gangs and the affects that tag along. The event was held along with Odd Squad Productions, a non-profit which aims to bring awareness among youth via powerful multimedia presentations. Many parents were thrilled to bring their kids to this sort of an event to show them what involvement in negative behaviour can do to their lives. Feedback from audience suggested the presentation was informative and powerful and almost everyone looks forward to more of these events in the near future.

U.S.A.V.E holds a forum against the social evils persisting around
U
nite to Stand Against Violence Everywhere (USAVE), Inc. is a federal not-for-profit organization working towards a decrease in violence in our schools and communities by increasing youth awareness of such issues. Through the leadership and participation of students in violence prevention efforts, we want to make our schools and communities safe and violence free. On December 14th, U.S.A.V.E. coordinated a forum at Grand Taj Banquet hall which was attended by more than 500 concerned community members. This event was organized with the purpose of alerting the community regarding anti-violence and gang-related issues.
The presentations were made by CFSEU (Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, British Columbia) and a former gang member, Jordan Buna, which had a great impact on the audience. Through the various engaging presentations, performances, and videos, the presenters were able to establish a connection with the audience. This captivating night left many people wanting more forums like this in the future as these events are critical for increasing awareness for these sensitive issues. Having such compelling performances and powerful messages are crucial for making changes that are necessary for constructing positive changes in our society. We would like to thank Mr. Jag Khosa from CFSEU and Mr. Garry
Thind, School Board Trustee, for the amazing support. “With the tremendous success of this forum, we will be hosting many more informative forums in the coming months,” said Sahil Dhami, President (B.C.) of U.S.A.V.E. Bajirao Mastani
Cast: Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Tanvi Azmi, Mahesh Manjrekar, Milind Soman
Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali Bajirao Mastani starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra is all about controlled hysteria. That is what Sanjay Leela Bhansali set out to do and that is what he delivered with Bajirao Mastani, his first-ever historical epic courtesy a splendid show by Deepika, Priyanka and Ranveer. In fact, the entire cast has excelled. The director, with his sweeping narrative touches, blurs the line between fact and fiction in his quest for the grand dramatic moments and the actors are good enough to carry it out to full dramatic effect. The film has no dearth of sequences designed to dazzle the eye and move the heart. However, the pace of the film, especially in the first half, is somewhat sluggish. But thanks to the strong central performances by Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, the impressive sets and costumes, and the power of the visuals rustled up by cinematographer Sudeep Chatterjee, Bajirao Mastani is never less than watchable. The film gathers momentum in the second half and Priyanka Chopra, playing Bajirao Peshwa’s first wife Kashibai, gets her due in the drama. It is, however, the love story of the Peshwa and the half-Muslim Bundelkhandi princess Mastani that takes
centrestage for the most part. The principal conflict point in the film hinges on the stiff opposition that that the married Peshwa faces from Pune’s Hindu clergy and his own deeply offended family when Mastani arrives and lays claim on the man she believes she is betrothed to, having received his personal dagger as a gift. The two women in Bajirao’s life – his wife Kashibai and his true love Mastani are at odds with each other, but in Bhansali’s universe, neither is allowed to lose her feminine calm and composure in the face of the severest of provocations. A restrained but laboured confrontation scene between Kashibai and Mastani sets the stage for the Pinga number in which the two women come together in an unlikely dance routine. Bajirao Mastani is riddled with several such flights of fancy and Bhansali admits as much in a long disclaimer at the film’s outset. Bajirao Mastani might not be reliable history, but it certainly is pure entertainment of the kind that only Bhansali can deliver. So, not with standing its flaws and avoidable detours, this is a film that stays on course right down to the bitter end. The CGIenhanced battlefield action is impressive – Bajirao Mastani is after all the tale of an 18th century warrior who never lost a battle in a short but eventful life. Bajirao Mastani is an exquisitely, if not accurately, crafted epic designed for those for whom history might not be a big draw.

like sets, done up in blindingly bright colours (it’s almost as if the scenarist is scared to miss out a single hue in the palette). The film also takes a detour to Bulgaria (Why Bulgaria? Who cares?) for a most improbable back-story, involving the main lead pair, gangs, and guns and bullets, but gets back to its tiresome old haunts and habits soon enough. This time around Shah Rukh shares space with Varun Dhawan who, in turn has a romantic track with Kriti Sanon, and a bumbling best friend track with Varun Sharma: SRK’s track with old flame Kajol, which is meant to be the

film’s mainstay, keeps coming and going. And the other bit parts come and go, too, pretty much on a whim. It’s almost as if someone says, now let’s bung in a comic track, and out tumble Johnny Lever as a car thief, and Sanjay Misra as a pony-tailed receiver of stolen cars, and Boman Irani as a pink-jacketed mobster with a love of vintage cars. Yes, cars do play a big part here, as they do in most Shetty films. And yes, a couple blow up most satisfactorily. But ‘Dilwale’, on the whole, is a plotless drag: the slaphappy antics you see on

screen are a random jumble of light, camera, action, done in the broadest sense. In this rigmarole, SRK is the only thing worth watching when he switches on the wattage (Kajol can shine, too, when she chooses to), but his twin parts—a ‘car modifier’ named Raj, and a gangster called Kali (yes, that’s right), are both familiar and bland. When old hands SRK and Kajol look into each other’s eyes, they can still make you feel it, except it doesn’t happen enough. Not by a long shot.

The Benefits of Having Straight Teeth
studies show that smiling – even if it’s a fake smile – can enhance your mood and lessen stress. Those with straight teeth are more likely to flash their pearly whites.
Certified Specialist in Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics
H
aving a perfect smile certainly makes you look fantastic, which is always a huge bonus, however, the benefits of straight teeth aren’t just cosmetic. As a Surrey orthodontist, Dr. Sharma sees patients seeking treatment for a variety of reasons and understands how significant a healthy smile is in all aspects of life. So why is it important to have straight teeth? Because it can positively impact our physical health, mental and emotional wellbeing and even have social benefits. Health Benefits of Straight Teeth Many of our Surrey orthodontic patients are surprised to hear that having straight teeth can actually help ward off serious health problems. The health benefits of having straight teeth include: 1. Healthier gums: When teeth are in their proper place, the gums fit snugly around each tooth, plus they’re easier clean, which lessens your chances of developing periodontal disease. 2. Improved oral health: Crooked, misaligned teeth are difficult to clean and oral health drastically improves when you have straight teeth. This means less cavities, plaque and tooth

loss. 3. R educed risk of diseases associated with tooth decay: Tooth decay and periodontal disease are both caused by bacteria, which can lead to a whole host of issues. An untreated oral infection can eventually result in pneumonia, stroke or heart disease according to the American Dental Association. 4. A lleviates problems linked with improper bite: A misaligned bite has its own set of issues. Orthodontic treatment can bring the jaws and teeth into proper alignment and prevent problems like speech and chewing
difficulties, abnormal wear that erodes tooth enamel, jaw problems and headaches and neck pain. 5. Lowers your chances of experiencing a tooth injury: Protruding teeth are more likely to be broken or injured. Straight Teeth and Confidence A stunning smile can boost your mental and emotional wellbeing by giving you tons of confidence. When you’re self conscious because of crooked teeth, it takes a toll on your self-esteem. When you look good, you feel good. This in turn has a positive effect on relationships, school, work and life in general. Plus,
The Social Benefits of Straight Teeth Whether we like it or not, first impressions count and our teeth play a large role in how we’re initially perceived by others. Studies have uncovered that dental appearance holds a lot of weight in social interactions and an attractive smile is particularly valued in western cultures. Kelton Global conducted research for Invisalign and determined individuals see those with straight teeth (rightly or wrongly) as more intelligent and successful, happier, healthier and more trustworthy. A study published in the American Journal of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics revealed that study participants with “ideal” smiles were judged as smarter and were more likely to be hired as compared to those with crooked teeth or “nonideal” smiles. Whatever your motivation for wanting orthodontic treatment is, the bottom line is that straight teeth come with extensive benefits and can improve your life on multiple levels. If you’re ready to find out what type of orthodontic treatment will meet your needs and get you on the path to a perfect smile, contact Aura Orthodontics today for a free consultation.

New year Resolutions
New Year’s resolutions are a bit like babies: They’re fun to make but extremely difficult to maintain.
ach January, roughly one in three Americans resolve to better themselves in some way. A much smaller percentage of people actually make good on those resolutions. While about 75% of people stick to their goals for at least a week, less than half (46%) are still on target six months later. It’s hard to keep up the enthusiasm months after you’ve swept up the confetti, but it’s not impossible. This year, pick one of the following worthy resolutions, and stick with it. Here’s to your health. HERE ARE DR. BHURJI’S TOP TEN NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS, ADOPTING WHICH WOULD BE BENEFICIAL FOR YOUR MIND, BODY AND SOUL. 1) LOOSE WEIGHT The fact that this is perennially among the most popular resolutions suggests just how difficult it is to commit to. But you can Succeed if you don’t expect overnight success. Healthy eating, watching Caloric intake & Regular Physical Activity is essential. Also, plan for bumps in the road. Use a food journal to keep track of what you eat
and have a support system in place. Around week four to six...people become excuse mills . That’s why it’s important to have someone there on a regular basis to get you through those rough times Smart Apps Such as My Fitness Pal can be of tremendous benefit. 2) STAY IN TOUCH Feel like old friends (or family) have fallen by the wayside? It’s good for your health to reconnect with them. Research suggests people with strong social ties live longer than those who don’t. In fact, a lack of social bonds can damage your health as much as alcohol

abuse and smoking, and even more than obesity and lack of exercise. In a technology-fixated era, it’s never been easier to stay in touch—or rejuvenate your relationship—with friends and family, so fire up Facebook , watsapp , and follow up with in-person visits. 3) QUIT SMOKING Fear that you’ve failed too many times to try again? Talk to any ex-smoker, and you’ll see that multiple attempts are often the path to success. Try different Methods to find out what works. And think about the Health
n 2014, it was all but confirmed that Kajol would play the protagonist in husband Ajay Devgn’s next production, helmed by Ram Madhvani. Eventually, the project was dropped. Rumours of their pairing persisted, but Ajay went on to film Shivaay, his dream project while Kajol stepped into Rohit Shetty’s Dilwale to star opposite Shah Rukh Khan. Now that Dilwale is released and Ajay too has plans firmed out for Shivaay with shooting coming to a close in April, plans have been been put into motion for the couple’s next screen outing together. Confirms Kajol, “Yes, we have planned a film under the ADF (Ajay Devgn Films) banner. We have a script in hand and are just refining it further with a couple of important things that need to be sorted.” Ajay plans to put this new film with Kajol on floors in June. He wouldn’t be directing the film though. “We have finalised the director. We’ll
soon reveal the film’s title, genre and my character’s details,” says Kajol. It’s clear that Kajol’s marching to her own tunes. “Ajay’s thinking is different and mine is different. I think of myself from a worker perspective and would basically do what I like doing,” she says, “Fortunately, I have a financial ability to do certain films only if I want to. I would do that from script to script. I would step into a film only if I am able to justify my presence there.” Time and again, she has been considered as someone who is very choosy about her roles, something which is visible in the fact that she has done just 30 films in a career spanning 23 years. “Well, yes, I am very picky. But then you never know, if things are exciting enough, I would do three back-to-back commercial films next,” she laughs.

benefits & the cash you’ll save! (We know you know the ginormous health benefit.) Talk to your Doctor Nicorette & other new modalities would be of help. 4) SAVE MONEY A penny Saved is a Penny earned. Save money by making healthy lifestyle changes. Walk or ride your bike to work, or explore carpooling. (That means more money in your pocket and less air pollution.) Cut back on gym membership costs by exercising at home. Many fitness programs on videogame systems like Nintendo’s Wii and Microsoft’s Xbox Kinect can get you sweating. Take stock of what you have in the fridge and make a grocery list. Aimless supermarket shopping can lead to poor choices for your diet and wallet. 5) CUT YOUR STRESS A little pressure now and again won’t kill us; in fact, short bouts of stress give us an energy boost. But if stress is chronic, it can increase your risk of—or worsen—Insomnia, Depression , obesity, Heart Disease and more. Long work hours, little sleep, no exercise, poor diet, and not spending time with family and friends can contribute to stress. “Stress is an inevitable part of life,”. “Relaxation, sleep, socializing, and taking vacations are all things we tell ourselves we deserve but don’t allow ourselves to have.” Contd in next issue

Ajay Devgn tries to overcome his ‘fear of heights’
A
ctor-filmmaker Ajay Devgn, who is returning to the director’s chair with ‘Shivaay’, got a chance to try and overcome his fear of heights while shooting for the upcoming film. Ajay, who has starred in action movies like ‘Singham’, ‘Singham Returns’ and ‘Action Jackson’, took to Twitter on Saturday to share a photograph of himself hanging from a cliff in the picturesque locales of Landour, a small cantonment town contiguous with Mussoorie. “Trying to overcome my fear of heights, do you guys think this will help?” Ajay captioned the image. ‘Shivaay’ is Ajay’s second venture as a director, after his 2008 movie ‘U Me Aur Hum’. Sayesha Saigal, who is the grand niece of legendary actor Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu, has been roped in to play the female lead in the film. British child actor Abigail Eames will essay the role of Ajay’s daughter in the film. ‘Shivaay’, which began filming in Mussourie in November, will hit the screens on Diwali 2016.

Will Smith Says Donald Trump Might ‘Force Him’ to Join Politics
F
ew days after opening up about his desire to join politics, actor Will Smith said that the kind of comments, Republican party hopeful Donald Trump is making about Muslims, may provoke him to run for Presidency, reported. Us magazine The 47-year-old Focus actor said that the offensive comments Mr Trump made about Mexicans earlier and now Muslims, are “crazy”. “If people keep saying all the crazy kind of stuff they’ve been saying on the news lately, about walls and Muslims, they are going to force me into the political arena,” Mr Smith said. The Independence Day
actor also added that he always dreamt of doing things beyond Hollywood. “I realised that there was no way that I was put here just to be a movie star. I tell my kids, ‘Be as unrealistic as possible, and then figure out how to make it real. The best things that have ever happened were unrealistic before they happened.’ You know, so for me, I think being the biggest movie star in the world as a goal actually was too small,” he said. Not only Mr Smith, but many other celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence, Lady Gaga, J K Rowling, Matt Damon, MSNBC host Joe Scarborough and George Takei called out on Mr Trump following his statements.
Morgan Freeman Safe After Plane Crash Lands in Mississippi
V
eteran actor Morgan Freeman had a big scare on December 5, when a plane carrying him crash landed in Tunica, Mississippi, reported TheWrap. The actor was not injured, but the plane was badly damaged as it careened off a runway during an emergency landing. ‘’I was on my plane on the way to Texas to shoot a segment for the Story of God. Sometimes things don’t go as planned and a tire blew on take-off which caused other problems. But thanks to my excellent pilot Jimmy Hobson we landed safely without a scratch. I cannot say the same about my plane.” No injuries were reported to either the 78-year-old Million Dollar Baby actor or his pilot. The plane was headed to Houston, Texas, from Clarksdale, Mississippi.

Sadhana Shivdasani, the woman who defined elegance and grace for Bollywood and its fans in the 1960s and beyond, died in Mumbai on December 25 following a brief, undisclosed illness at the age of 74.

Hindi film style icon of 1960s, Sadhana, bids good-bye to the world F or over a decade since her debut in Hindi movies in 1960, Sadhana would define style and became an icon through a series of blockbuster movies, which not only shot her to fame, but also created an eponymous haircut that remains popular even today. The “Sadhana Cut” is but one small tribute to an actor whose legacy remains alive with such films as Mera Saaya (1966), Who Kaun Thi (1964), Gaban (1966), Mere Mehboob (1963), Ek Musafir Ek Hasina (1962), Hum Dono (1961), Rajkumar (1964), Waqt (1965), and Ek Phool Do Mali (1969). She was part of several other cinematic landmarks, but was possibly at the pinnacle of her
acting abilities in these nine movies.
Sadhana’s period of influence in Hindi cinema, like other female superstars in Bollywood, was relatively brief; just about a decade and a half. She acted in an era in which other female film icons — Asha Parekh, Vyajayantimala Bali, Sharmila Tagore, Nutan, Tanuja, Waheeda Rahman and Mala Sinha — were involved in an intense competition with each other. Despite that, they all held onto their own and some of them became friends later. Big shoes to fill As a leading heroine of her time, Sadhana had big shoes

to fill, for her era followed the age of three of Bollywood’s greatest female performers: Nargis, Madhubala and Meena Kumari. Despite the fame she achieved, Sadhana’s sunset years were spent in loneliness. Her husband, R.K. Nayyar (her director in Love in Simla), died in 1995, 29 years after they got married. She fought a long-drawn-out legal battle over her tenancy, and her battle with hyperthyroidism left her with a deformity in her eyes. Silent farewell Leave me alone, Sadhana would often say, for she wanted to be remembered just the way she was in the 1960s. She died alone at Fortis Hospital in Mahim on December 25th; alone, and away from the glare of spotlight. Perhaps that is how it should have been. A silent farewell to a woman with quiet grace.

Salman has a special place in my heart: Sunny Leone
ollywood actor Sunny Leone says superstar Salman Khan was quite welcoming when she came to India and hence he holds a very special place in her heart. Before entering Bollywood, Sunny had appeared on Salman’s hit reality show Bigg Boss. “I am a big fan of him. He was one of the first people in the industry to wish me luck and welcome me in India. In that way I have a very special place in my heart for him as those were the first encouraging words that you hold on to especially when you don’t know anything. He said some really nice things,” Sunny sad in an interview. The 34-year-old actor is not in touch with the Dabangg star but is all praise for him. “I am not in touch with him. He is a great person. He does amazing things for people whether they are famous or not famous. He helps a lot,” she said. “Every time, that I have seen him he has gone out of his way to say Hello to me and my

o one remembers her from Samir Karnik’s 2004 romance ‘Kyun! Ho Gaya Na...’ in which she played Aishwarya Rai’s sister, Riya. For many, Kajal Aggarwal made her Bollywood debut opposite Ajay Devgn in the Rohit Shetty-directed cop drama, ‘Singham’, seven years later. And despite the film’s super success, she disappeared down South, only to reappear as Akshay Kumar’s leading lady in the heist thriller, ‘Special 26’ in 2013, followed by another two-year hibernation. Why this game of hide-and-seek? Speaking from Ooty, where she’s filming the Tamil-Telugu bilingual, ‘Brahmotsavam’, with Mahesh Babu, the 30-year-old actress points out that even down South, she’s always opted for quality

over quantity. “In this industry it’s easy to get typecast and I’ve been careful even with my Tamil and Telugu films. ‘Special 26’ was not a substantial role in terms of screen time but I fell in love with the script immediately,” says Kajal, who is gearing up for another comeback with Deepak Tijori’s intense love story, ‘Do Lafzon Ki Kahani’, next year. “I play a blind girl or rather because of a disorder, she suffers from poor sight. So while Randeep (Hooda) trained in martial arts, I went to a Blind School and studied Braille.” So, will the disappearing acts continue? “I hope not,” she laughs, huffing and puffing on the treadmill. “I’d like to strike a balance between Bollywood and the South. After all, Hindi is my language and I am a South Mumbai girl.”
ooraj Pancholi says he would prefer to stay mum on the alleged suicide case of his ex-girlfriend Jiah Khan, even as CBI has in its chargesheet accused the actor of driving her to commit suicide. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed the charge sheet on December 9, citing that Sooraj made false promises to Jiah, who allegedly committed suicide in 2013. “Highs and lows are part of life. God is great. The case is still in court. 10 people have 10 different things to say about it. I will talk once the case is cleared. I don’t want to make a ‘khichdi’ (mess) out of it,” the actor told reporters at the red carpet of 11th Guild Awards. The 25-year-old actor was launched in Bollywood this year by Salman Khan in Hero. When asked if he has the superstar’s support in the case, Sooraj said, “Salman has got nothing to do with it. Like every family, my family is supporting me and I am supporting my family.”

Dr.Allama Iqbal day was celebrated by PCCA
Here are reasons why you could be eating more than you should
D
o you go crazy with excitement every time you see your favorite food or order all the interesting dishes on the menu just because you can’t decide on one? Is binge eating while watching TV or allowing yourself a treat while on a diet familiar to you? No matter how you describe these situations, overeating is never a good idea. Identifying the triggers of overeating and following a few steps make keep you from eating more than you should. Read on to know more what could be causing you to overeat... Friend circle There are times when even if you are on a healthy diet, you end up going to restaurants with friends and get tempted to have fried food. Remind yourself of your healthy diet plans because you want to lose weight and stay fit — it will make you feel better for yourself, not for
your friends. Be firm and stick to your decision. Soon your friends will accept your choices and maybe even start following the same. Crockery The size of your crockery could be a major contributor to overeating. Big, fancy plates might look great in restaurants but for everyday meals, plates should ideally be medium or slightly small. Make the change and see how it affects your food intake. Burning out More often than not, we end mistaking symptoms of tiredness for hunger. Make sure you get enough sleep every night — anything between six to eight hours. Also keep a note of the times when you feel the most tired. Once you figure out a pattern, you can fight it by opting for healthier snacks instead of gorging on junk food. Fast eating Do you gobble up your food and finish your meal in less than 10 minutes? If you can clean your plate in less than 20 minutes, you could be at risk of overeating. Eat slowly and savour every morsel — chew your food properly and put the fork or spoon down after every bite.
Pakistani Canadian Cultural Association celebrated Dr.Allama Iqbal Day at studio 7 at Sukhi Bath Motors. Renowned speakers of the Pakistani community presented their views at this time. Tea and snacks were served to all the guests by Studio 7.
Ganga Sagar web site was launched by Rai Azizullah khan Ganga sagar web site was launched by Rai Azizullah Khan at Studio 7. At this time many pakistani and sikh personalities were present . All of the speakers appreciated the cause. At the end of the programme Rai sahib was honoured and tea and snacks were served by team of Studio 7.

Here’s how jogging can help you stay sharp
D
id you know that exercise is not only good for your body but your brain too? Exercise can enhance the development of new brain cells that play an important role in learning and memory of adults, new research has found. The process of developing new brain cells in the adult brain is called adult neurogenesis, the scientists explained. The researchers found that mice that spent time running on wheels not only developed twice the normal number of new neurons, but also showed an
increased ability to distinguish new objects from familiar objects. “Our research indicates that exercise-induced increase in neurogenesis improves pattern separation by supporting unique and detailed long-term representations of similar but nevertheless different memory items,” explained lead investigator Josef Bischofberger, professor at University of Basel in Switzerland. “Pattern separation is involved in many memory tasks of everyday life.
For example, when learning the game of chess, it is critically important to remember the different shapes of pieces like the pawn and bishop,” Bischofberger explained. For the study, the researchers tested two groups of mice that were housed either without (sedentary) or with running wheels (voluntarily running) using a novel object recognition task to assess learning and longterm memory. The researchers found that whereas distinct objects were remembered and recognised by both cohorts of mice, only the running mice could faithfully distinguish similar looking objects. Investigators determined therefore that the running mice had developed better pattern separation capabilities than sedentary mice. To investigate further, the researchers looked for changes in the brains of the mice. By using markers that could identify newly-formed brain cells, they found that running mice developed about twice as many new cells. The study was published in the journal of Brain Plasticity.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Shares First Photo Of His Newborn Daughter
A
proud Dwayne Johnson shared the first photo of his newborn daughter, Jasmine, in a heartfelt Instagram post recently. “Christmas came early! Within minutes of being born she was laying on daddy’s chest. And being a grateful man takes on a whole new meaning,” Johnson wrote. The former wrestler expressed his gratitude to his fans and praised his girlfriend, Lauren Hashian, who gave birth on December 16. “It’s a miracle we should witness because it’ll give you a whole new respect for the strength and beauty of a woman,” he said on the post. Johnson then offered up advice to all the young men who would become fathers. “To all you young men out there who will be fathers one day, the goal of ‘being better’ will never steer you wrong. Trust me. Something else that’ll never steer you wrong is ‘walking thru the fire’ with your baby’s mama. “I was right there during labor, helping her breathe, every highly intense contraction, every second of pain, right there watching the actual birth, cutting the cord and wiping the tears. Incredible.” Johnson also wrote that he was present during labor, watching his daughter being born and helped cut the umbilical cord. The new parents first announced their pregnancy news on an Instagram post in November. Jasmine is Johnson’s second child. He has a 14-year-old daughter, Simone, with his ex-wife Dany Garcia.

Jennifer Lawrence learning Spanish from Venezuelan actor
V
enezuelan actor Edgar Ramirez has said he was the one who taught Oscarwinning actress Jennifer Lawrence to speak Spanish in David O. Russell’s new movie ‘Joy’ starring Niro and Bradley Cooper. The actor plays wannabe singer Tony Miranne, who is the ex of the leading character, a self-made woman who builds a business empire based on her inventiveness and sales skills, and despite having all the cards stacked against her. Ramirez, who debuted in American movies with ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’, said he was interested in the character he plays in ‘Joy’
‘Star Wars’ blasts box office
because it was all about a man who “goes against the macho rules imposed by society”. Ramirez said his character was an example of “true love”, since the exhusband, a would-be singer who never quite made it, shelves his dreams in order to aid the mother of his children. “I think one of the most beautiful things about love is helping the person you love become the best she can be,” he said. And his ex-wife does just that, becoming a huge success in the business world. The actor noted the message of gender equality in the film and said that “the world is a lot more difficult for women”.
Adele’s ‘Skyfall’ voted best Bond theme

he Force is really strong with Star Wars, which destroyed records at the US and Canadian box office to earn a gargantuan $238 million (app Rs 1428 crores) in sales over the opening weekend, Walt Disney studios said. The figure shatters the previous record set by Jurassic World earlier this year when it premiered at $208.8 million. Globally, Star Wars: The Force Awakens space epic raked in an estimated $517 million, Disney said, breaking records for biggest opening weekend abroad in 18 other countries, including Russia
and Germany, and second biggest across four nations. The worldwide figure puts the film in second place behind Jurassic World, which earned $524.9 million globally in its first weekend. The highly anticipated Force Awakens has blazed a recordsetting trail since its domestic debut taking the prize for highest-grossing domestic opening night with $57 million and biggest domestic singleday sales with $120.5 million. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, previously held both records at $43.5 million for an opening night and $91 million for a first day.
dele’s Oscar-winning song “Skyfall” has trounced Sam Smith’s writing’s on the wall to be voted fans’ favourite James Bond theme tune. The British pop star scored a huge hit with the title track from 2012 movie “Skyfall”, winning her an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a BRIT Award. Smith became the latest artist to take on the job of recording a Bond theme, providing “Writing’s on the Wall” for this year’s spy adventure “Spectre”, but it has failed to match the popularity of Adele’s song in a public vote. “Skyfall” topped the poll, put together by bosses at Britain’s ITV network to find Britain’s best-loved Bond theme, followed by Paul MCCartney & Wings’ “Live and Let Die” at number two. Shirley Bassey claimed the third and fourth spot with her two 007 hits “Goldfinger” and “Diamonds are Forever” respectively, and Smith’s track rounded out the top five.

9 Reason Why We Should Respect Our Elders 9. As you sow, so shall you reap. When practicality has more ears than emotions, lets be brutally practical and selfish for couple of minutes. Will you choose to trade places with the grandmother living next door when you see her being disrespected day in and day out? Will you trade places with the old couple in the park, which is ill-treated by people every day? In the local transport when you sit through the journey and elders stand all the way for hours until theend? Is this the future you wish for? So, for a practical, more head – less heart generation, here is aquestion, is this how you want your life to be? If not, then lets sow our seeds right rightaway so that our plant grows taller and standsstraight. The idea of being humiliated by younger generation is gut wrenching so lets not do it to them because we do not want it to happen to us. Respect begets respect so invest respect at present to insure respect in future. 8. Humanity Pushing an elder to get a better seat or the last piece of cake is never worth it for it never feels right. We happily help a child when he is about to fall, why? Because he can notmanage it on his own and we know it. Similarly, the elderlies need a helping hand. Humanity, this is another reason to respect elders. We all share a bond as human beings. As a child people, we know and those we do not know help us at every stage. This is because we need it andcan not survive without it. This is instinct imbibed in all to protect theyoung ones.Similarly, when elders who face health problems and vision problems, the more able-bodied generation should take the responsibility because it is nothing less than their duty to respect and help their elder generation. It is a payback for safe childhood and a hope for a comfortable old age. 7. Knowledge Bank Wisdom is in the eyes and eyes give away the age. This adage is true and this is again a reason to respect your elders for they have seen it all. They already experience the phases of our life, they know what we are going through and can guide us through the unknown. Mountaineers have the most experienced player ahead so that the amateurs step correctly and not hurt themselves or kill themselves. The idea is that an expert can guide, the young-lings should learn from them and respect their knowledge. The life is short for the try and learn method, playing smart in every field is important and not using the living breathing knowledge bank is plain stupid. We have amazing asset that deserves to be valued. 6. They love you Our elders love us; they want the best for us. We have to keep in mind the generation gap and meet them half way to understand their motive. We should respect people who love us and have their best interest in our well-being. We are the children whom the elders have seen growing up, they have a say in our life for they care, and we have the responsibility
to appreciate them. The least we can do is respect them. 5. Heritage The Indian weddings, right from the beginning is laced with rituals which is rarely understood by the younger generation. These rituals have deeper meaning and without elders, we would be lost to say the least! The reading of the scripts, the ‘tithe’ and ‘kundli’, the drawing of auspicious dates and answers to the right handed cooking questions are all known to elders. The tricks to the trade and the traditions are best understood and implemented by the more experienced section of society. Every family has that special recipe which other just cannot get right, its handed down in family and elders. Elders make the heritage of any family, the elders are the gatekeepers to endless family treasure and it makes sense to respect the gatekeeper. 4. Family tree We all have a beautifully laced family history which is no less that a classic movie. We have heard tales of our elders picturing them in slightly faded picturesque background, running around trees. Who does not like to hear stories about their fathers as burly teenage boy and mothers as shy teenage girl, their grandfather as proud freedom fighter and grandmother as coy homemaker? This family tree is where we come from, who we are and how we became what we are. This gives us roots in this world and backstory to depend upon. We should respect our history and those who create it. 3. Strong morals In this world, the elder teach the younger. Whatever we learn is from them. If you have a sound value system and moral values, If you can instinctively tell what is wrong and what is right, thank your elders for teaching you the distinction. The society is made from us; if the base is weak the buildings will not survive, whenever you see a strong building, thank those who strengthened the foundation. A man is judged over his character and this is a gift by the elders. So respect is an obvious to follow. 2. Love We know that they love us, but do we love them back? One of the simplest reason to respect the elders is that we love them. They care for us when we are sick, cook for us, care for us, talk to us teach us and love us more than life itself. We love them; we follow them and their words. They show us their love by the acts of kindness and care, we show it by respect. The touching of feet in morning or daily evening walks are not just a rule, they are acts of our love. Respect is part of love, love doesn’t exist without respect and respect is one of many signs of love. To let the elders know you care just respect their words and actions. This will cement your relation and trust will multiply in no time. Life becomes easier for us when we have our elders on our side during our struggles.
1. Experienced guide to life The confusion of teen and tension of early twenties and frustration of late twenties, what if we have an experienced person to guide us through it all? Someone who knows what it feels like to be in love? To be indecisive about life? To not know what to do? To deal with peer pressure?
To deal with family pressure? Well, wake up people! We all have these friends/ philosophers/guides. Look around and take your pick. Life hands you trouble and solve it for you as well. We have the puzzles and a key that solves all puzzle. Respect the help for it is what makes life livable.

Real life is also like cricket : Dhawan
T
he line between a bad shot and a good one is thin. If it goes to the boundary it is hailed as good. If it travels to a hand then, obviously, it is bad. Shikhar Dhawan views it differently. For him, it is just a shot. “The end result is the remuneration for your effort,” he smiles. It does. It can stall the team’s progress or propel his reputation high. It is all subjective. “Sometimes you have to play cross-batted and take smart risks. I always back my shots. I know this particular shot gives me runs. It can also cost me my wicket. “I have to accept it because only I know what is best for me. It is not that I am irresponsible because I get out playing shots,” said Dhawan, prepared to give his best on Australian pitches. He does give the impression of nonchalance on being dismissed. “No. That is not me. I try to hit the ball by stepping out. I do it to unnerve the bowler. “I like to make an impact with aggression. Rohit (Sharma) and I approach the task in a similar manner. But people say we appear lazy. We are not casual and certainly not reckless.” Shades of Virat Kohli? “I admire Virat for his self belief and amazing fitness. We look up to him. He is so grounded despite fame and success.”
For Dhawan, with four Test and eight One-Day International centuries, the important thing is to stay fit. “My basics are strong and I know my preparations are also strong because I work on my skills all the time. You can’t do this unless you are fit. People miss this point. “They mostly look at results and not the effort. I am improving and believe me I am at peace with the world. I laugh away my failures because that is the best way to deal with them.”

ames and sports are a necessary part of education. The students can build their health in good shape by playing different games. It is truly said that Education without games is incomplete. It teaches us discipline, patience and sportsmanship. It also provides a good excitement and enjoyment in the dull and boring life of students. The aim of education is the all round development of a complete personality of a person so, physical aspect of a student should not be neglected. As, we all know that development of mind and body are equally important in the way of good education. Along with the education, games also prepare all of us to stand up and face all the hard challenges of life.

7 Tips for gorgeous eyelashes

M
Keep tissue handy Wipe off excess mascara from your wand before applying to avoid clumps from forming. Make sure you do this at least for the first few uses when extra formula accumulates on the wand. 2. Sprinkle some baby powder For voluminous lashes dust some translucent powder of baby between each coat of mascara. 3. Long luscious lashes To get long lashes wiggle the brush back and forth at the base of your lash and lightly comb through the tips. This will ensure that the thicker coat is at the roots and not weigh down your lashes. 4. Thicken your lashes If you have light coloured or scanty lashes, coat both the sides of your eyelashes with mascara. 5. Hold the brush right Holding the brush in a particular manner can decide the results. For volume, wiggle the brush horizontally and for longer lashes, swipe the mascara on the lengths holding the brush vertically. 6. Try spooning Applying mascara on the lower lash is a tough job and many of us end up having it all over our skin. Place a spoon below your eye with the curved side facing outward and apply your mascara. This will save you from the mess. 7. Make your mascara new again If your mascara has dried out before reaching it expiry date, add a few drops of saline solution to the bottle/tube to re-wet flaky formula.

Close-cropped A short hairstyle is the perfect balance between sophisticated and daring, which will show the world that you like to have a unique look but appreciate classic icons of the past like Audrey Hepburn. A short haircut shows you’re not afraid to take a risk, which is why Emma Watson chose this style after she had finished work on the last Harry Potter film. Says Savio John Pereira, “A longer bob look on a woman, as seen on Victoria Beckham, shows that you like to feel glamourous but young and fresh, since it can be so modern if you go for a choppy cut.” Curly hair While many women prefer to straighten their curls, choosing to go natural and show off natural body and texture suggests that you’re not afraid to be in the limelight and prefer
Chitrangda Singh and Kendall Jenner and suggests a different personality to your regular pony style — this one says to the world that you’re organised, professional and want to be taken seriously. This is why it’s perfect for the office and important meetings, showing off your ambition and level of perfectionism. Bipasha Basu wore this hairstyle practically throughout her film Corporate where she played a powerful business executive. Needless to say, it goes best with suits.
a more natural, laidback style. Curls are particularly suitable for bohemian fashion, but they also work well with dramatic silhouettes, as seen on the likes of Kangana Ranaut. “Having curls isn’t always fun as this hair requires extra conditioning, so make sure you use a hair masque each week and work an oil or curl cream through the hair after each wash,” says hairstylist Asgar Saboo. Blonde highlights Highlights in light shades like blonde yellow shows that you’re a confident woman, like to turn heads and enjoy attention. It’s often seen as the ultimate symbol of femininity and indicates that you have a glamourous side. Women also go for a dramatic shade to mark a new chapter in their life, such as when Kim Kardashian West went blonde after the birth of her daughter. Says Saboo, “Be prepared for the maintenance, as you’ll need to use a specialised purple shampoo and good hair treatment at least once a week to maintain this look.”
