New Year celebrations all over the world New Year’s Eve In many places people stay up late to see the old year out and the New Year in. Almost everywhere in the world church bells ring, horns toot, whistles blow, sirens shriek. London’s Trafalgar Square and New York City’s Times Square swarm with crowds of happy, noisy people. The hullabaloo expresses people’s high spirits at holiday time.
Chinese New Year
Many Chinese children dress in new clothes to celebrate the Chinese New Year. People carry lanterns and join in a huge parade led by a silk dragon, the Chinese symbol of strength. According to legend, the dragon hibernates most of the year, so people throw firecrackers to keep the dragon awake. In the Chinese lunar calendar each of the 12
years is named after an animal. According to Legend, Lord Buddha asked all the animals to come to him before he left the earth. Only 12 animals came to wish him farewell, and as a reward Buddha named a year after each one.

Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur
Songkran
In September or October, Jews believe that God opens the Book of Life for 10 days, starting with Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) and ending with Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement). During these days, the holiest in the Jewish year, Jews try to atone for any wrongdoing and to forgive others. A ram’s horn trumpet, known as the shofar, is blown before and during Rosh Hashanah and at the conclusion of Yom Kippur.

In Thailand, a special three–day water festival on April 13–15 marks Songkran, the Buddhists’ celebration of the New Year. Parades feature huge statues of Buddha that spray water on passers-by. In small villages, young people throw water at each other for fun. People also release fish into rivers as an act of kindness. At Songkran, people tie strings around each other’s wrists to show their respect. A person can have as many as 25 or 30 strings on one wrist, each from a different person. The strings are supposed to be left on until they fall off

naturally.
More New Year Traditions
Indonesia also has two New Year celebrations — the official one on January 1 and another on the Islamic New Year, whose date varies from year to year. The Russian Orthodox Church observes the New Year according to the Julian calendar, which places the day on January 14. In Vietnam the New Year usually begins in February. Iran celebrates New Year’s Day on March 21. Each of the religious groups in India has its own date for the beginning of the year. One Hindu New Year, Baisakhi, comes sometime in April or May. The people in Morocco observe the beginning of the year on the tenth day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic year. The Koreans celebrate their New Year the first three days in January.
New York
The best known New Year’s Eve attraction in New York City is at Times square: it’s the “ball drop”. A big, brightly lit sphere is hoisted to the top of a pole and drops as the clock strikes 12. Officially, you can’t drink on the streets in New York. But you might notice people with beer cans in brown paper bags, cocktails secreted in McDonald’s cups and booze in hip flasks. As you can imagine, Times Square gets pretty busy. Brooklyn is a good alternative. There are fireworks and live music at Grand Army plaza, at the north end of Prospect Park, from 11pm. But there’s more to do than watch fireworks explode and balls drop. If, like me, you don’t mind being a hipster stereotype, there are a number of warehouse parties around Brooklyn’s Bush wick and Williamsburg areas.
Buenos Aires
Even though Buenos Aires is revered for its lively nightlife, year-end celebrations tend to be quite tame and family oriented. In the hot and humid summer locals go to the beach, while those who stick in town gather with family and friends for a meat asado (barbecue) feast, with lots of sparkling cider, red wine, and Fernet (an aromatic bitter) with Coke. When midnight strikes, I make sure to find my way high on a rooftop for a festival of light. The Porteño skyline illuminates with a colourful spectacle, and residents (dangerously) shoot fireworks from balconies and terraces. Shouts of “Feliz Año Nuevo” and even fútbol chants ricochet off the concrete buildings.
San Francisco San Francisco brings in the New Year with a literal
JANUARY 2017
bang thanks to an amazing fireworks display. A romantic view can be seen from Ina Cool brith Park or you can take a boat ride on the bay. The citizens of SF get real flashy this time of year and anything sequined becomes the official fabric of the city. Swanky underground venue Doc’s Lab kicks off 2016 with the North Beach Brass Band. One of my favourite neighbourhoods on NYE is the lively Mission District, which boasts some of the best food in the city and you can laugh your way into the New Year with comedy legend Marga Gomez at Brava Theatre. Gay nightlife is abundant in the Castro and South of Market neighbourhoods.
Bangkok Thais love any excuse for a party. So it should come as no surprise that we end up celebrating New Year twice (and sometimes three times, if we join in on Thai-Chinese New Year’s celebrations). While Thai New Year – held in April when the hot season really gets going – is our chance to mix merry-making and family with the occasional ferocious water fight, the beginning of a new calendar year is more about flocking to the banks of the Chao Phraya river to watch the fireworks, dance badly in public, and maybe have a tipple or two.
Tokyo It’s no surprise that in the land of the rising sun, the start of a new year is a significant event, but in Tokyo don’t expect the massive parties and firework displays so prevalent in other major cities. Instead, there is a more introspective vibe and a homage to tradition, as most people spend the early evening eating buckwheat noodles at home with loved ones, before heading out to join the huge crowds for hats mode (the first shrine or temple visit of the year) to pray for good fortune and buy lucky charms for the 12 months ahead. At Meiji shrine there is a festival atmosphere, with colourful food stalls and the din of distant ringing bells, as thousands of people patiently shuffle towards the shrine’s inner sanctum from midnight onwards, with festivities (and trains) running until well after dawn. Alternatively, escape the city and hop on a train to Mount Takao (one hour from Tokyo station) to view the sunrise from a sacred mountaintop.
Sydney Sydney relishes its status as the first major city in the world to greet the New Year (sorry, Auckland) and attempts to outdo itself annually with ever-bigger fireworks displays on the harbour. On the night, the waterfront areas nearest the Opera House and the bridge are predictably choked with spectators, but there are several secluded green spaces fringing the harbour where it’s possible to turn up relatively late and still secure a patch of grass for your picnic blanket. For every family or couple that celebrates the evening alfresco, there is another that uses New Year’s Eve as an excuse to stay in and cook a big meal, then watch the fireworks on the television.
Cape Town The city at the foot of Table Mountain takes advantage of its natural splendour to offer a range of New Year celebrations. Locals choose between beach parties hosted by the likes of Pacha Ibiza, psychedelic trance gatherings, such as Resonance, picnics on wine estates, fireworks at the V&A Waterfront, and no end of
themed events, comedy evenings, dinner-show cabarets and swish rooftop soirees. In practice, the typical Capetonian’s mix of laid-back cool and fear of missing the big party – or wave – will render them unable to commit to buying tickets for these events. The typical NYE will start with a sunset picnic on Clifton Fourth Beach, a cable car ride up Table Mountain (last car down at 9pm) or a walk up Lion’s Head. Then it’s on to the bars of Long Street, where punters can pull their own pints and down unlimited beer until the bells at Beerhouse’s Open Tap party. If local hipsters do make it to a venue, it will be an old favourite such as Yours Truly bar; most will more likely stagger between house parties in Woodstock, Obs and Mowbray. A tip for a memorable evening is a candlelit picnic in the Kirstenbosch National Botanic Garden, with live music by local sample-folk-meister Jeremy Loops; needless to say, tickets are still available.
Copenhagen Things that dominate New Year’s Eve in Copenhagen: drunken people and fireworks, and drunken people with fireworks. A lot of Copenhageners imagine they will celebrate New Year’s Eve attending a swanky ball with hundreds of interesting and attractive strangers. What most of us will actually be doing is attending a dinner with people we have known for ages spending hours debating whose party to crash later. Others will be gathering in thousands at midnight at the town hall square, armed with rockets, Roman candles and champagne, ready for the party to evolve. This may include hugging and snogging strangers in a state of champagne-induced bliss. What everyone will be doing on New Year’s Day: tending to their hangovers while watching the New Year’s ski jump in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, on the television.
London New Year’s Eve in London has its own ambience: that of blind-drunk survival. Every year the capital becomes an industrious end-ofdays assault course, as costumed squads litter the streets and the tube turns into a 24-hour nightclub. Choice is another defining factor: parties are sardined into every restaurant, bar and pub back room, all vying to charge you £20 to see their mate DJ. And thousands who “just want to have a chilled one” jostle around the river for the annual fireworks display, only to lose everyone in the rush to the tube afterwards. Tiring of these scenarios, the professional partier knows that New Year’s Day is the new New Year’s Eve. New Year’s Eve night marks the beginning of a new year, celebrating the past and hoping the best for the future. It goes without saying that this night must be celebrated in the best way possible with your l o v e d ones.

How to get sleep naturally- without drugs
W
hen you wake up in the morning, do you feel refreshed or irritated or groggy? I know myriads of people–older adults in particular-who wake up around 3a.m. and look at the ceiling or the clock feeling uncomfortable. Sleep has run away for them. As many of us know, hormone problems do cause sleep disturbances. These don’t just begin at bedtime, and they can’t be fixed by just addressing them at this time. Melatonin is the sleep hormone that induces sleep. Its normal functioning depends on proper hormone functioning during waking hours (serotonin and others). Distress affects this functioning. Distress mainly releases three hormones. They are namely, Adrenaline: Commonly known as the fight or flight hormone which increase heart rate which lead to increased blood pressure. Norepinephrine, like adrenaline, results in arousal and increase blood pressure. Cortisol, a steroid hormone, commonly known as the stress hormone, produced by the adrenal glands. It is a life saving hormone in a life threatening situation. But when distress-real or fake -is continuing in the body, the cortisol production become continuous. It creates havoc, sleeplessness, and more important Weight gain or obesity. Moreover suppress the immune system, increase blood pressure and sugar, decrease libido, produce acne, and contribute to obesity and more. Of course, estrogen and testosterone are also hormones that affect how we react to stress, as are the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin. Most of us also already know that numerous health conditions and medications [including over-the-counter] do interfere with normal sleep. Now, let us discuss, what we can do to get back the sleep you need, so as to ensure your best health, safety, and well-being.
shower before you hit the bed 4 Those who cannot shower, should dip their feet in hot water for 20 minutes at least 4 Give yourself a massage before bed to release stress and help relax 4 Stretch before bed to relax muscles. Many people do not do this as they do not know. 4 If nothing works, time to see a doctor to rule out a medical condition — such as, heartburn, thyroid problems, anemia, sleep apnea, menopausal hot flashes, incontinence, or deadly depression — is affecting the quality or the quantity of your sleep. Treatment of the aforesaid health problems may take care of the sleep problem automatically.
Are there other ways to get a good night’s sleep sans medications? Most often, poor quality sleep stems from one or more lifestyle causes, and it is important to address these underlying issues as they can impact more than just sleep: 4 A daily routine- day and night both- can make a big difference in how easily you fall and experience good quality sleep. Wake up and Foods That Improve Sleep Naturally hit the bed at the same time, 7 days a week to Foods we eat during the day affect our sleep keep your hormone cycle regular. And foods are picked before ripe that is the reason why we have fruits and vegetables available throughout the year as they are shipped around the world. 4 A multivitamin [s] in the morning with breakfast having Vitamin A,D3,E,K2 plus krill oil capsule- for omega 3- is great for promoting hormone melatonin production and improved sleep. 4 Magnesium- Many people are deficient in Magnesium and this particular deficiency can have a big impact on sleep quality. Get your magnesium level checked. It should be normally between 1.7–2.2 mg/dl 4 I often drink a cup of chamomile or herbal tea without sugar or add stevia towards sweetness each night a couple of hours before bed. The Sleep Environment Your sleep environment is also extremely important for sleep quality. Artificial light, warm temperatures and sudden noises can all effect sleep quality, but these things are almost always fixable. Again, you’ll have to experiment to figure out what works best for you, but in general, here
are some tips: 4 Remove or cover, all artificial light, including the light on your alarm clock, TV light, phone, etc. 4 Keep the temperature of room always around 65 to 70 degrees. 4 Try some white noise like sounds, of rain, ocean etc. 4 Keep the color of walls of your bed room very light. 4 Going to bed before 10.30 pm will also greatly impact your body’s healing ability, as there are supposed to be additional benefits to sleep before midnight. 4 Try to go to bed at the same time every night. If you can’t fall asleep with in 15 minutes, leave the bedroom. Sit somewhere. Read a book for 15-20 minutes or until you get sleepy. Then go back to bed. 4 Alcohol with dinner 2 pegs for a man and 1 for a woman [sorry for discrimination] is ok with food at Supper/Dinner time. Since alcohol have dry high calories with sugar in it, may keep you awake in the late night when sugar level keep crashing down and body throwing away extra glucose by way of peeing. 4 Eat a light dinner. A heavy meal can lead to heartburn, which can keep you awake. Avoid caffeinated tea, coffee, and soda, as well as alcohol and chocolate before sleep. 4 Turn off your TV, computer, cell phone or Kindle, and tablet at least 30 minutes before bed. They stimulate the brain. Read a book, not on laptop or cell phone. 4 A warm bath, or listen to soft music to help your body and mind unwind before bed. 4 Get your bedroom ready for sleep. Dim the lights close the curtains. Power nap: Is a short sleep taken during the working day in order to restore one’s mental alertness. This Day time nap can be one way to treat sleep deprivation; one can get incredible benefits from 15 to 20 minutes of napping. Conclusion: Due to aging, elders get less sleep. They should learn to be still on the bed for 7 hours in a row. One should sleep for 7 to 8 hrs. If you sleep for 9 or more hours then get your iron, blood profile checked by a Physician. There are approcimately 10% people in the world who get fresh with 6 hour sleep, for others it is not normal.Sleep is definitely a complex topic and different methods work for different people. My reverend father’s rule has been incredibly helpful to me in developing a schedule and routine that actually allows me everyday to get out of bed on time. What about you? If you feel groggy during the day, a power nap can be useful. This entails sleeping for approx. 20 minutes only. After waking up, you will feel a surge of energy and will be able to live your day happily.

Six tips for whitening skin
W
hite skin is preferred everywhere, especially so in the Eastern part of the world, where the hot sun ensures no one escapes getting tanned. Perhaps, the reason why the women in the East prefer white skin is because blemishes are not so evident and flawed features don’t stand out as they do for those with dark skin tones. Popular amongst Asian people, skin lightening products have become a multimillion dollar industry, with big brands such as Olay and L’Oreal competing with fly-by-night operators packaging their products in home ‘factories’. Literally hundreds of whitening products flood Asian markets, where regulation is either very lax or non-existent. These cheap skin lightening products may
produce fast results, yet the consumer often ends up paying a much higher price later. These skin lightening products can cause permanent skin damage, or worse, organ damage and skin cancer, since most of them use dangerous chemicals like hydroquinone and mercury as active ingredients in their skin whitening creams. Therefore, if you wish to get rid of a skin tan and lighten your skin colour, why not use safer methods of which there are many, such as natural remedies that effectively lighten tans and prevent the skin from darkening. The following home remedies for skin whitening, not only lighten the skin tone but promise a lighter complexion. However, best results are only achieved if they are inculcated as a part of daily routine.
6 Best Home Remedies for Skin Whitening 1. Bring a shine to your face and remove your tan with a mix of one teaspoon each of milk powder, honey, lemon juice, and half a teaspoon of almond oil. Apply on face and wash off after 10-15 minutes. 2. Oatmeal mixed with yoghurt, tomato juice and applied to the face and kept on for 20 minutes, then rinsed off with cold water, helps to lighten the skin by getting rid of the tan. 3. Slices of raw potato placed on the face helps reduce blemishes and other marks. 4. Lime juice being natural bleach when mixed with turmeric powder and applied to the face is helpful in lightening your skin tone. 5. A paste made of crushed, dried orange peels and yoghurt washed off with cold water after 15-minutes, reduces skin blemishes and scars, thereby making the skin look fairer and lovelier. 6. One tablespoon gram flour mixed with two teaspoons raw milk and 2-3 drops of lime juice left on the face for 15-minutes before being rinsed off, works extremely well for lightening dark skin.

SBBS JANUARY 2017
he dream of Sant Baba Bhag Singh Ji, Sant Baba Daleep Singh Ji, Sant Baba Hardial SinghMusafir Ji & Sant Baba Malkit Singh Ji was realized when SBBS college turned into a university. Sant Baba Dilawar Singh Ji, is the present Chairman of the SBBS University, is continuing the vision and ideals of the founding fathers. This huge achievement was made possible by the ‘Tan, Man & Dhan’ support provided by the NRIs and local Sangat. Many students faced with financial burden, would not be able to achieve what they are capable of, without the monetary help from generous NRI donors. Students are given an opportunity to get a university degree locally, thus avoiding long commutes, saving time and money. SBBS also has numerous programs, which inspire graduates every year, to excel in their chosen fields. Apart from the academic achievement, students are also trained on various sports, drama and other forms of arts, thus developing self -expression, self-reliance, self-esteem and confidence. Students are made aware of their surroundings eg. respect for professors, teachers, staff members, helping fellow students, tolerance, integrity etc. Students attain skills and attitudes which will benefit them for the rest of their lives, especially in our rapidly changing world. Students are constantly encouraged and inspired to excel in their careers, lead in their communities and succeed in their lives. Every year, hundreds of students graduate with Science, Arts or Commerce degrees. They are then encouraged to find a job or pursue their studies by becoming doctors, engineers, nurses, teachers or professionals in their chosen field of expertise. SBBS University has achieved immeasurable success over the years. It organizes orientation / training programs, workshop

and refresher courses for teachers and students. It also has wellequipped laboratories, computer centres, library and other necessary amenities. Young women are encouraged to learn sewing, computers and necessary skills, which will enable them to find proper jobs and earn decent income. In normal circumstances, these women would not have had, any exposure or an opportunity to better themselves. he dream of Sant Baba Bhag Singh Ji, Sant Baba Daleep Singh Ji, Sant Baba Hardial Singh Musafir Ji under the able leadership of Sant Baba Malkit Singh Ji was realized culminating in to establishment of Sant Baba Bhag Singh University which would not have been possible without ‘Tan, Man &Dhan’ support provided by the NRIs and local Sangat. May 24, 2015 (Sunday) was a red-letter day for Sant Baba Bhag Singh Educational Complex (established in 2003) when S. Parkash Singh Badal, Hon’ble Chief Minister, Punjab declared open the first Academic Session of Sant Baba Bhag Singh University in the august presence of Local Sangat, Politicians and students of this complex. The presence of prominent NRIs like Mr. Jatinder (Jay) Minhas, Canada, Mr. Ravinder Singh Khera, UK, Mr. Kuldeep Singh Parmar, UK & Mr. Jarnail Singh, Germany added grace to the occasion. S. Parkash Singh Badal especially appreciated the efforts of theses NRIs who even if abroad physically but their heart beats for their native place contributing immensely for the social works undertaken by Sant Baba Bhag Singh Memorial Charitable Society. Mr. Jatinder (Jay) Minhas not only himself but his family and the family run trust ‘Sant Wattan
Singh & Chaudhary Khazan Singh Minhas Charitable Trust, Damunda, Adampur are synonymous with the social works and contribution to the society. An example, starting of Rural Development Centre at village Damunda, Admapur financed by Minhas Family in the sweet memories of Late Numberdar S. Bhagwant Singh Minhas where more than
60 girls & ladies of many villages around are getting training stitching & computer. Icing on the cake was a message of good wishes to Mr. Jatinder (Jay) Minhas on establishment of Sant Baba Bhag Singh University from Premier Christy Clark, Province of British Columbia, Canada which was highly appreciated by Sant Baba Malkit Singh Ji, Chancellor - Sant Baba Bhag Singh University, S. Many of us get confused as to what comes first – eye makeup or foundation, eyeliner or mascara? How to put it all together? This guide is intended to help you in those situations. Hopefully, I have explained the entire look in easy-tofollow steps. So lets get ready for a wedding or party at home!
@ansalmedia
Want to do
wedding/ party makeup
at home?
Step 1: Always begin with skincare and then follow up with foundation Make sure that you are using your regular moisturizer & allowing it to seep into the skin at least for 15 minutes before moving on to foundation. After moisturizer & before foundation, I would strongly recommend using a face primer. A primer makes your foundation last longer, it acts like a barrier between your skin & foundation & also makes the application of the foundation smooth. Next, apply your choice of foundation – powder, liquid
or cream. Make sure that you set the liquid or cream foundation with a loose powder so that your foundation stays put all through! Applying face primer Applying face primer for how to do wedding or bridal makeup at home Step 2: It’s Eye shadow time! Remember, your eyes should not ‘match’ your outfit. Instead it should ‘compliment’ the colors on your dress. The key to applying eye shadow is using a flat eye shadow brush & then using a fluffy dome shaped brush to blend. Make sure to apply a darker color in your crease & follow it up with a highlighter up to your brow bone. This softens any harsh lines that may be visible to the naked eye. Step 3: First comes kajal followed by eyeliner Apply a black, brown, blue or green colored kajal in the waterline & then line the lash line with black eyeliner. You could use a pencil, gel or liquid liner – whichever you feel convenient to use. If you’d like, add a ‘flick’ at the outer corner of the eye to add some
drama. Indian women look great in a winged liner. Never EVER do a smoky eye & a red lip! It’s always ‘smoky eyes with nude lip’
or ‘bright lips with nude/neutral eyes’. Only if you are walking the ramp you can go for ‘smoky eyes & a dark or red lip’! In this case, I would suggest that you do your eye makeup first and then move on to foundation because you are going to have a lot of fall outs from the eye shadow. Step 4: Time to curl lashes & apply mascara An eye lash curler is the most underrated makeup product! Just using a curler can make your eyes look ‘awake’! Apply mascara from the roots of the lashes & wiggle the wand in a zigzag motion till the tip. This will nicely coat the lashes individually & will add definition & volume. Remember, always curl first and then apply mascara. If you do it the other way around, your lashes are going to break! Curling lashes - how to do wedding or bridal makeup at home applying mascara - how to do wedding or bridal makeup at home Step 5: Blush, Contour & Highlight For a natural looking glow, apply blush on the apples of your cheeks upwards, going into the hairline. The best way to judge where blush needs to be applied is by smiling in the mirror… Use a big fluffy brush to blend the blush on the cheeks. Next, use a brown-matte shade which is 2 shades darker than your skin color to contour your cheeks. This will add structure to your face & will make your face look slimmer in pictures! Suck in your cheekbones, notice the hollows & apply the contouring powder just there & blend! No lines must be visible. It needs to look most natural. To highlight, apply a shimmer blush or powder on the high plains of your face, i.e. the T-zone & cheekbones. The idea of applying a highlighter is simple – when light falls on any of these areas; your skin is going to give out a sheen/glow which looks amazing – especially in photographs.

Prachi Desai turns down offer for Pakistani advertisement
A
ctress Prachi Desai says she turned down an offer to feature in an ad for a Pakistani beauty brand, considering the strained ties between India and Pakistan. “As of now, I am not taking up any endorsement deals in Pakistan and yes I have turned down the offer since I feel it is not the right time.” Prachi said in a statement. According to a source close to the actress, Prachi was approached by a ‘Pakistani beauty brand to endorse one of its products’. “But the actor politely turned it down. She has done this keeping in mind the relations India has with our neighbours at this time. She thought it would be inappropriate for her to be signing up for such a thing right now.”

What kind of socks to be preferred for winters to look fashionable? The winter season brings out a lot of fashion trends such as layering, big colorful coats, and infinity scarves; but you would probably never think that one of the biggest winter fashion statements and trends is socks. Socks are very popular this year and will continue to be during the winter months. There’s nothing better than being fashionable while keeping warm. Here are a couple of styles and ways you can wear socks this winter season:
O
ver-the-knee socks are definitely in this season. They have always been there but not quite as popular as they are becoming nationwide. If you have never tried this look now is the time to gain the courage and see why it’s such a popular trend these days. Knee high socks go great with boots, heels and even sneakers - depending on the outfit. Several types of dresses paired with knee-highs can make for the perfect outfit. For extra warmth, wear the socks over tights. Staying comfy with just a little thigh showing is enough to be sexy, but cute and classy all in one. You can find overthe-knee socks almost everywhere with several options to choose from like retail, designer, shoe stores, and more. For a Boho-chic, comfy, sexy, but urban look opt for knitted ones in grey, black, nudes, or browns. They go with anything and compliment every single outfit: shorts & silky tops or slouchy sweaters, skirts and sophisticated blouses or cardigans worn with a belt, knitted dresses or long sweaters. For more of a holiday party look you can go for black over-the-knee socks or embellished ones with a black dress.
Socks with Heels Socks with heels are the perfect winter trend for 2017. These comfy sexy, fun, playful feet cover-ups offer infinite styling options. Polka dots, stripes, suspender, skeleton & bones mock socks, sheer, black, striped, white, lace, plus so many more! Socks do look fantastic with heeled shoes, chunky thick ones, stilettos, court shoes, sandals, peep toe, pumps. Exposed Boot Socks The big trend this year is pairing kneehigh or over-the-knee socks with long boots that hit below or just over the knee. You want a good inch or two of sock above the boot. Throw in the mix textured socks in grey, creams and generally neutral colors, with the occasional bright color. Exposed socks look great and are super warm over skinny jeans or tights, and by all means play it neutral; For a really fun and on trend look wear boots and socks with a dress or skirt, either with bare thighs or opaque or patterned stockings. It’s just about how you match the colors, textures and cuts of your dress, socks and boots.

A Girl in a Whirl Contd. from previous issue (Part 6) “Don’t disturb me, Sam. I am not in a good mood.”, I almost scolded Sam. “I’m sorry, Sonia.”, Sam said. I kept mum like a statue. It was nightmarish for me. I was feeling it like I was having a bad dream. I wished I opened my eyes and told my mom that I had had really a horrible dream. Alas! That was not a dream. That was my bitter reality. I was going through terrible depressing thoughts. “I’m really sorry, Sonia. Actually the waiter had brought a cheapquality whisky last night. Come on, let’s have dinner outside. Please get ready. And you will also be in a good mood.”, Sam said putting his hand on my shoulder. “Don’t touch me.”, I said rudely. “Why shouldn’t I? You are my wife.”, Sam said with authority. “Sam, I’m in a very bad mood.”, I said even more rudely. “Don’t be so sensitive for so small a thing.”, Sam said trying to convince me. “It was something casual for Sam! Were Sam and I similar in any way? Was Sam able to realize my feelings?”, I didn’t respond.
“Come on, get ready in fifteen to twenty minutes, I’ll be back from reception soon.”, Sam said and left. I was pretty much double-minded. I thought of my parents and younger siblings. How many hopes they had pinned on me! My dad was very sick of court dates regarding the dispute of our sixteen acre agriculture land at our village. He was running a bookstore in Chaurha Bazaar and he was making good money. But, he also wanted us to settle abroad somehow for he was going through many problems. Our parents had brought us up with great comforts. We had no idea what problem a person can have. But, I was feeling like a helpless imprisoned bird. I had no idea what to do to make the things right. Finally, I decided to sacrifice my happiness for the better future of my siblings and parents. I started getting ready. Sam came and became very happy to see me ready. Sam could have easily judged from my face that I was upset. Many people are hypocritical, but I was pretty straightforward; always calling a spade a spade. Our parents had never taught me any bluffs. Sam embraced me. But my charm had turned completely into mourning. Sam took me to an expensive restaurant. Our car driver parked the car outside the restaurant. After
taking seats in the restaurant, Sam asked me to order the meal. I ordered my favorite dishes. The waiter first brought me soup and a peg for Sam. I was enraged to see the peg. Sam was again going to drink the same enemy of mine that had ruined my last night completely. I was very badly irritated. “Sam, If you are to drink I’m going back to the hotel.”, I declared “Relax Sonia. I’ll drink very little.”, Sam said “Not at all, I’m leaving!”, I whispered rudely, but firmly. “Just listen to me, Sonia. You know, when I come home after so hard work in Canada, my whole body is in terrible pain. I can sleep only after having two pegs before my dinner. Otherwise I would keep tossing the whole night in pain. It has become my habit, Sonia.”, Sam said. “But you have your own construction company! You don’t have to work. Aren’t you the owner of the company?”, I asked Sam. “You are very innocent, Sonia. I have to work even harder than my men. It’s not easy to earn dollars in Canada.”, Sam said. “But, company owners don’t work here. Only their workers and labourers do.”, I contradicted Sam.

Understanding A Generation Gap
A
generation is a group of people born around the same time scale, a decade or two apart, and raised around the same place, area or region. People in this “birth group” exhibit similar characteristics, preferences, and values during their lifetime such as communication, shopping, and motivation preferences. For example baby boomers love to read a Newspaper than to go online for news. In a specific Generation period, trends are most influential as people come of age, which means that members of a particular generation will develop and share similar values, beliefs and expectations. It is important to remember that at an individual level, everyone is different. But looking at people through a generational lens offers useful predictability for those trying to reach, inform or persuade a large cross-section of a population. Currently, five generations make up our society Each of those five generations has an active role in the marketplace. Depending on the specific workplace, the workforce includes four to five generations. Here are the birth years for each generation: Key trends that shape generations The three key trends that shape generations are parenting style, technology and economics. For example, many Baby Boomers have the parenting philosophy, “We want it to be easier for our kids than it was for us.” This philosophy in turn helped create and reinforce Millennials and Centennials a sense of entitlement, which is at present a hotly debated topic. Parents of baby boomers or Traditionalists or Silent Generation (1919 to 1940) Using birth records, it is possible to identify, by birth year of mothers, the proportion of births that occurred during the baby boom period. Mothers born between 1919 and 1940 had a high proportion of their children during the baby boom. Based on this
Generation gap is widening among Baby boomers and Generation X ,Y,Z, courtesy, the different style and shaping of these new generations. They grow up with latest technology, high tech communication devices and booming social media, there by leading to regular conflict of interest and difference of opinion. The baby boomers, barring a few exceptions, are laggards andbeing not in congruity with technology is on the receiving end. Now-a-days it is not big eating the small; it is fast eating the slow.
Surinder Shaun Kochhar demographic criterion, the parents of baby boomers generation can be defined as all individuals born during this 22year inter-war period.According to 2011 Census data, 3.1 million persons, about 1 in 10 Canadians (9%), were parents of

born between the mid 1960’s and the early 1980’s. Gen X grew by witnessing global political events that occurred during this generation’s youth. Events such as The Vietnam War, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the end of the Cold War, and the Thatcher-era government in the UK were events that helped to influence the culture and upbringing of Generation X. Relative to previous generations, Gen X is wide open to diversity and has learnt to embrace differences such as religion, sexual orientation, class, race , culture and ethnicity. Millennial or Gen Y(1977 to 1995) Millennial are getting so much attention. At global level, Millennial are also the fastest-growing generation of customers in the marketplace, bringing the greatest lifetime value. More so, Millennial exhibit different attitudes toward parents, elders, employment, sales, marketing and spending which are challenging many conventional strategies and approaches all together. They have been shaped by the technological revolution that occurred throughout their youth. Gen Y grew up with technology, so being connected and tech savvy is in their DNA. Equipped with latest technology and gadgets, such as Cell Phones, laptops, tablets and daily Apps., Generation Y is online and connected 24/7, 365 days a year. Many Millennials grew up seeing their Baby Boomer parents working day and night doing stressful corporate jobs, which has shaped their own views on the workforce and the need for work and life balance.
The baby boomers (1946 to 1965) A baby boom, by definition, is a sudden rise in the number of births observed from year to year after World War II. Since half a million people approx... were lost during World War one and two, governments of the day encouraged parents to go for babies to increase the population and there were incentives for that. The word “Baby Boomer” was coined thus for this post-world war period. This baby boom lasted 20 years in Canada. During that time, more than 8.2 million babies were born, an average of close to 412,000 a year in Canada. The average number of children per woman was 3.7 during the baby boom period, compared to about 1.7 in recent By: Prof. Surinder years. WEST COAST REALTY KILLARNEY OFFICE VANCOUVER CHRISTMAS PARTY AT THE ARBUTUS CLUB....
Margot Robbie Seemingly Actress Urmila Matondkar ties Confirms Wedding Rumours the knot In a low key ceremony With Photo of Diamond Ring! ollywood actress Urmila Matondkar tied
T
he Australian actress seemingly confirmed all those wedding rumours with a telling photo of her ring finger on Instagram Monday. In the shot, Robbie’s hand ― which is wearing a simple but gorgeous diamond ring ― is in focus, while the actress and her partner, British director Tom Ackerley, and are blurred in the background, sharing a kiss. Details of the couple’s wedding are sparse, but according to Vogue they got married in a secret ceremony over the weekend in Byron Bay, Australia. The outlet reported that Robbie was spotted wearing a shirt that read, “Say ‘I Do’ Down Under,” prior to the nuptials. Robbie and Ackerley met while filming the 2014 drama “Suite Française,” on which he served as third assistant director, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The couple is often quite private about their relationship, so it’s no surprise they kept their wedding out of the public eye.
B
the knot with Kashmiri businessman and model Mohsin Akhtar Mir.The only Bollywood personality who attended the wedding, solemnised as per Hindu rituals at Matondkar residence, was designer Manish Malhotra. Matondkar, who debuted in the movies as a child artist in Marathi film Zaakol (1980), went on to do memorable roles in movies such as Rangeela, Satya and so on. We kept it an exclusive wedding with just family and friends at the celebration. Since our families wanted the wedding to be a low key affair, we mutually decided to keep it private. We seek your blessings on embarking this new journey of our lives,” Matondkar said.

A
utumn seems to be fading out and the cold, darker days of winter are approaching fast. We all know to wrap up warm and how keep our bodies well in winter but many of us forget to pay attention to our eyes and how the harsh conditions can affect them. Here are some simple easy tips on how to give your eyes some TLC this winter. 1. Protect Against the Sun You might have already put away your sunglasses for next summer but they should be worn all year around. Snow and ice reflects the sun’s UV rays whether you are walking around, skiing or driving. Over exposure to UV rays over a long time can put your eyes at risk from such diseases as age related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts. Also, glare caused by the sun on icy roads can make it harder to see, so you should also make sure you have a pair of sunglasses handy in your car and these should be prescription sunglasses if you wear prescription glasses. Make sure you have regular checks with an eye doctor or eye clinic to keep your glasses and sunglasses up to date. 2. Humidify During the winter months, the air is dryer and the humidity in your home can drop. This dryness can cause your eyes to become dry, or dryer if you already suffer with a dry eye disease. A good way to combat this dry air to is use a humidifier in your home. 3. Keep Hydrated Even a slight bit of dehydration can impact on the dryness of the eyes and during the winter months the cold can change the body’s thirst cycle and central heating can dry the eyes out even more. Try to increase your fluid intake by drinking water, soup, decaffeinated teas and even eating more fruits and vegetables with a

high-water content. 4. Don’t Dry Your Eyes There are a lot of things you may do in winter that dry out your eyes and these things can be avoided. Try to reduce the high temperate of your central heating if possible, having high heat can cause your tears to evaporate more quickly. Also, if you use a blower heater, such as in the car, try to direct the airflow away from your face or try to warm up using a seat warmer for example. Having dry heat blowing directly in your eyes severely dries them out unnecessary. When you are in a dry environment that you are unable to change the temperate of, such as in an office, make sure you blink plenty to keep your eyes lubricated and use artificial tears if needed. Your ophthalmologist can advise what type of artificial tears are better for you. 5. Watering Eyes? Many people in the winter months suffer from watering eyes, this can be due to the cold and windy environment. If you go outside and it is very cold and/or windy wear some protective glasses to help and if it is sunny too your sunglasses will help with the cold and wind. For some people over watering eyes can be a symptom of an infection or blocked tear duct, so if you do have any concerns get an appointment at your local eye clinic. 6. Feeling Tired? In the winter months, there is less natural light which can make certain activities harder, such as reading and writing. This can cause eyestrain which in turn can make your eyes feel tired quicker than normal. If you do find your eyes struggling in low light conditions you could get a lamp and put it close to you while you are carrying out those activities, and always wear glasses if you have been advised to do so by your eye doctor or clinic.

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS THE ART OF MAINTAINING NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS If you’re like almost half of all adults, you have a New Year’s resolution. The Reality it’s hard to make that pledge stick. A week into the new year, just 77 percent of resolution makers are still on track, and after six months, only about 40 percent will have stayed the course, according to University of Pennsylvania research. Why New Year’s resolutions fail Why is maintaining resolutions so tough? Researchers have ID’d several culprits, such as setting a goal that’s too vague or having unrealistic expectations (lose 30 pounds by March 1—ha!). But perhaps the biggest challenge is turning your wishes into immediate action, then keeping with it. “It’s easy to change your attitude but difficult to change your behavior,” explains Christine Whelan, PhD, clinical professor in the School of Human Ecology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. “If you’re committed to it, however, you can make a new habit or behavior permanent.” How to set manageable goals Outsmarting the odds means setting doable goals (go from couch to 10K, not a triathalon), then breaking them down into reasonable steps. A new you in the new year starts right here. Find out how to reboot your diet, your workout, your stressful days, and your energy, and how you can make those resolutions stick
Plan for snack attacks “The hours between mid-afternoon and dinnertime are when cravings kick in hard,” says Moon. Before leaving for work, pack a 200-calorie protein-complex carb snack in your purse. Think: hummus and pita chips or pistachios and a pear. Then, when a snack jones strikes, you’ll have a go-to treat to avoid unhealthy office snacks. Reboot your workout Get-in-shape goals tend to fizzle as early as the third week of January, per recent data based on Facebook searches. Yet some keep at it. What’s their secret? “People who are successful are more likely to view fitness as a permanent lifestyle change, not an activity they can give up once they reach a number on the scale,” says Kirsten McCormick, founder of Running with Forks, a wellness coaching company in Seattle.

Reboot your diet When it comes to cleaning up your eating, take a tip from the Boy Scouts: Be prepared. If you want to rise above temptation, like a yummy app spread at a party, you have to think one step ahead, says New York City nutritionist Joy Bauer, RD, Today show contributor and founder of Nourish Snacks. It also helps to have no-deprivation strategies, she adds: “Eating better is often associated with misery, so it’s no wonder that so many people throw in the towel.” Use these tactics to eat healthier, long-term. Figure out your “why” Maybe you hope to set a good example for your kids. Or you’re just tired of not fitting into your old jeans. If you know the reason that’s fueling your desire to eat better, you can use it to motivate yourself when you’re eyeing the dessert menu Don’t focus on subtracting food “Instead of making an ‘I want to lose weight’ pledge, try ‘I’m going to put more fruits and vegetables on my plate,’” says Bauer, “so the resolution is a positive action that you can perform over and over.” Art Markman, PhD, professor of psychology and marketing at the University of Texas at Austin and author of Smart Change, agrees. “If it’s an addition instead of a takeaway, you’re more likely to repeat it until the action becomes an automatic habit,” he says. Do a kitchen cleanse Toss unhealthy products (chips, sugary granolas, sodas) from your pantry, fridge, car and office, advises Maggie Moon, RDN, owner of Everyday Healthy Eating in Los Angeles. Then restock with good-for-you options,
like carrots and air-popped popcorn. Make sure you don’t have to dig deep to find them: Last year, Cornell University researchers found that women who kept healthy food visible in the kitchen had lower BMIs than those who left junky products out on their countertops
Take it a week at a time “It’s easier to make a plan to go running three times this week than vow to run three times a week indefinitely,” says Whelan. “If you make your fitness goals week by week rather than so far-reaching, you’ll have more success, and that in itself is motivating.” Raise the stakes Research shows that anticipating rewards may help you be more devoted to your goal. Sure, it’s a bribe of sorts, but experiment with promising yourself a mani-pedi after a week of true commitment, or a new gym outfit after two. Or put a penalty on the table: Promise to go TV-less for a week if you don’t follow through. A 2012 study by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that a financial pledge is another effective incentive Bundle your workout You may be more likely to participate in a behavior you’re not so into—such as exercising—if you combine it with an activity you really enjoy, like catching up on House of Cards. This strategy is called “temptation bundling,” and a 2013 study published in Management Science suggested it works. Reboot your stressful days “One big problem with making stress reduction your New Year’s resolution is that it’s so abstract,” says Markman. “You can’t just vow to relax without being more specific.” And since you’re not about to quit your job and hightail it to a peaceful island (you aren’t, right?), it’s crucial to learn the
tools that will make your everyday tension less toxic. Say no to something every week A simple “I can’t, sorry” is a helpful immediate fix. Regularly overextending yourself forces you to put your own needs behind others’ requests, says Pedram Shojai, an Eastern medicine expert in Orange County, Calif., and author of The Urban Monk. Take a time-out daily Vow to disconnect at least once a day, suggests Shojai. Close your eyes and take 10 deep breaths in your office, or crank up a soothing playlist on your commute. Try meditation “Meditating is like your brain’s virus checker, detecting toxic stress and blocking its effects on your physical and emotional health,” A 2013 study found that adults who were taught the basics of mindful meditation had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Reboot your energy One 2015 U.K. study showed that the main reason people were unable to make a change was that they were too tired to focus. Here’s how to get yourself juiced for a great year. Keep a fatigue diary Once you pinpoint the time of day you feel draggy, you can make adjustments. “For example, if you’re tired in the afternoon, you need to rethink what you eat for lunch or try to drink more water, “ says Holly Phillips, MD, author of The Exhaustion Breakthrough. Make a to-don’t list After you write out your to-do list for the day, ask yourself which tasks really need to get done—and which aren’t realistic or important. The latter constitute your to-don’t list. Drawing a line through them “removes energy-draining clutter from your mind,” says Dr. Phillips. Pencil in bedtime Most of us don’t think of sleeping as actively doing something, so we don’t plan it. “When you put it in your calendar,” explains Dr. Phillips, “it becomes a priority, the same way your gym time and work meetings are priorities.” Set a reminder to go off a half hour before you plan to hit the sack. Download an app Free apps can lend a digital hand by keeping track of your progress, texting reminders or putting you in touch with crowdsourced support. A few to try: Balanced, Coach.me and Pact. Share your battle Social networks function as an audience to cheer you on and offer advice. A 2013 study found that when Twitter users looking to lose weight tweeted about their goals, they shed more pounds than those who didn’t; research out of Northwestern University showed that CalorieKing users who “friended” others on the site lost at least 7 percent more body weight than the less social folks. Do more with Google It’s not just a search engine. Google Calendar lets you set a firm bedtime, and it can ping you when it’s time for your time-out. Google Maps helps you gauge the distance, terrain and incline of a new running route. Download the Google app to turn your phone into a nutrition database or fitness class finder. Wherever you are, simply ask, “Where’s the nearest barre studio?” and you’ll get your answer.
