New City Farm in Athropocene

Research and observation started from surrey docks farm, which is a city farm in Canada water. Although people are close to animals, the connection between them are mainly visual connection, the animal playground center space makes it more like a zoo. The function and spaces for human and animals are very divided.

Axo 1:20

On the site of the surrey docks farm it’s mainly for school or family trip or commercial use. Even outside the farm, the image of surrey docks farm is also place for short visit and taking beautiful photos, which makes it, in a way, an Instagram photo factory.

The second observation started from a chicken fridge in a butcher’s house in Canada Water. The chicken are from three places, city farm, slaughterhouse, meat factory. The map below shows the allocation of these three. Slaughterhouse and meat factory are romote from city centre and the city farms are in city centre. while most of the meat supply for city is from meat factory, so what is the role of city farm in city? Creating a beautiful image of human and nature? or selling happy moments of food animals for city dwellers?

A

The drawing is trying to provoke the current situation. Overground there’s a happy farm where people playing happily with animals, undergorund there’s an intense farm but no one knows what’s going on there.

B

So a question came, can city farm be more than a city farm? Can it be closer to our daily ritual? Can visitors be more involved and participant more? Can other parts of food animlas’ life be showed as well?

C

An imagination of new type of city farm. Diary cow is taken as an example. People can not only see the cow but also see and participant in things behind, milk production, meat production...People live suoer closely with cows.

D

A new relationship between cows and human, which is part of my argument. As city dwellers, can we step forward? can city farm function more? Farm as home processing animals, can it also be a place habitable and participatory for human?

As I was trying to bring some domestic space thing into the proposal, I sited the project in Hilton hotel, by River Thames, facing the Canary Wharf. The hotel consists of three buildings and all connected by one corridor in the middle. 1. In the middle is the hotel part, surrounded by residence and restaurant where It can be linked to. 2. Close to pier, the ferry now which is used for carrying passengers to the hotel can be used for transporting food products in the proposal. 3. As it’s located on the riverside of river Thames, facing the city centre, it can be a new symbol and propaganda of the city and create a new image for city dwellers to the other side.

HOW COWS ARE MILKED

MILK COLLECTION AREA

In terms of the domestic space, in order to figure out a way to integrate bedroom spaces into farm I case studied two typical rooms and extracted the necessary elements out, the yard (balcony), the toilet, the bed, the bathtub.

cow feeding area

With all the elements I have, I collaged them up into a unit. In the middle there’s the bedroom, under there are cows. The heat of the cows are collected for bedroom heating. On the green area people grew grass hay to feed the cow. From the wall were normally a paiting hanged there, people can see the cow milked. When they go to shower, they pass the green space which is like pushing them closer to things around.

In order to complete the other parts of cows life. I case studied the daily routine and life cycle of diary cows. At what time they get milked, they eat and rest. When they are born they will be taken away from their mother cow to separated calf pen, some of them will be used for diary cows, while the others will be either killed for meat or burning up. And unit was developed according to the case study.

In terms of materialality and space languages, I looked back to an early model for inspiration, the model idea started from a group collage and I was trying to play around different materials and to see how they go together. There are moments of different feelings, some are monumental, some are controlled, some are sharp ,and some are solid or soft. I had a feeling that some of these feelings can be matched to the happenings in the proposal. And these are how I made the connection and developed them into spaces.

The section shows the journey from left to right along the corridor, people will experience cheese making workshop to see production related to diary cows, exhibition area of cows archives calf pen, restaurants and cow body burning area, which is the end of both the journey and cows life. Up there are rooms for people to live with cows. In the exhibition area of cow archive, people see cows skeleton and photos highlighting the moments of human and cows. In the restaurant, people can see the slaughter house, up there is a calf space. People can see these baby cows before they’re killed and they can visit those or select which they want to have for meal. The holes let lights come in and there can be some visual connection between up and down.

The entry of the corridor. Visitors can get a taste of views from holes. At the end side of the corridor, there is a city view. This is from cows perspective to see people in corridors and in normal rooms.

From cow’s perspective

Calf ’s space

In the restaurant, people can see slaughterhouse and hanged meat block, which is like a stage in front of the background view of city. Up their head, there are some visual connection between calf and people.

Bathroom in the unit.

At the end of the corridor, there’s area to bring the cow body up. Through the monumental holes people see cowboy and smoke in front of a city view.

Bedroom in the unit.

The diagram is to show the route of human client and non-human client. The white line and orange line are showing humans route and dairy cows road respectively, the white dashed line is showing the lifecycle of dairy cows in the project. The overall axo of the project. Bedroom, grass area, corridor, cows, burning spaces. And everything is going together in one.

LOOK ! The view from the ferry on the river, white monumental frame with smoke going up to the sky ,and some greens in distance.

TECHNICAL DETAILS This is the TS drawing of the unit, the manure is collected down the miking space and then be divided into solid part and water part and be used for watering grass hay and used as fertilizer, the heat is collected by a big fan and exchanged to domestic space.

ISSUES & SOLUTIONS

Law enforcement According to UK laws, it’s legal to sell sex while it’s illegal to buy, which makes a risky environment for sex workers. They can hardly know the clients identity.

Social views Sex trade is treated as a ‘special business’. Compared to food, clothes, housing, sex-releated things are still seen as a different commodity though it’s basic human needs as well.

Desires and fears Many sex workers are trying to be known by more people and fighting for their own rights. However they are still fear to face to cameras because of social stigma

Adam was browsing around on the road, suddenly he saw a big concrete box with a small door. What’s that? He entered and felt light in the middle, he instinctly head up to feel closer to the light....‘gush...what’s there on the ceiling? dick..lips and..boobs’...He said surprisingly and made his body into a worshiping gesture

Adam stepped up along the light...‘What’s the sound? Anyone’s having sex?’ Then he entered the porn watching zone. He raised his head to fighure out what’s in the light... beautiful boobs and legs.. sometimes there and sometimes disappear......‘body in books, body in films and body in reality’ he smiled, ‘Such a dream’like moment’.

Adam took-off all his clothes while gazing at the girl, who was bathing, through the curtain. ‘ I might have seen her boobs just now downstairs....she has so beautiful body.’ Adam felt hard to hold himslf.

Adam washed himslf carefully and enjoyfully to feel his body and enjoy others’ body peacefully and equally under the light in the middle.

While walking up, Adam felt a bit warm water and shampoo in the air. He can even see vague moving bodies through curtains. ‘Changing for what? Bathing? He wondered.

Adam went into the film site, where people here shoot film. Adam can still see the bra and underwears...and condom left on the messy bed....‘Everything is just so...real.’ Adam was totally immersed in the pinky atmosphere.

People gathered around for the celebration of sex. Under the sacred light in the middle, they stood, meditate and smile, to feel everything inside and around their bodies. ‘Come! Join us!’ Eva looked back and waved at Adam. With a freshed-up body, Adam continued his steping up. Light came out through the archs with figures of moving people. Adam was absorbed in the sweet and moist and sexy air.

02 Growth

In traditional prostitutions, the whole thing is dominated by clients and pimps, who are usually males. However in this sex worker community, the business the also the place are dominated by females, the sex workers themselves. The images below are trying to show a new relatioship between different genders. With the promotion of their social status, females are breaking the old rules and creating a new thing. Penis and virgina here are symbols of two genders.

02 Body memory A removed tooth decay. As a removed part of body, from inside body to outside body. Body is the most precoius gift created by nature, no matter the fresh or the destroyed.
