Getting from ‘A to B’ the easy way By Gaylene Moore

Got a few people to move around? Mount Maunganui business Pacific Auto Traders, has plenty of vehicles that would fit the bill nicely – whether you want to buy or just rent for a while. For more years than he will admit to, Kevin Cooper has been in the motor vehicle sales trade. From buying and selling passenger cars, to owning a specialist light commercial vehicle yard and a 4WD accessory business, Kevin knows the industry inside and out. For the last three years, he and wife Karen have branched out even further. Not only do they continue to import hand-picked cars directly from Japan to sell on their high-profile yard on the corner of Jean Batten Drive and Hewletts Road in the Mount, they also run a thriving car and commercial rental business, Pegasus Rentals, which caters to tourists and local people alike. With the current need for extra people moving capacity to rugby games around the country, Kevin is keen to showcase a few of the multi-seating vehicle options available at Pacific Auto Traders.

The first is a super-comfortable 2004 nineseater Nissan Caravan. Looking very patriotic in sparkling black, this van is among a very few available for sale that seat more than eight people safely. It is fitted with a powerful 2.4 litre petrol engine with automatic transmission, dual air conditioning and heating and tinted windows. The high seats will not only carry your passengers in comfort, but allow them to see all the scenery as well. This van would be just perfect for a large family, tour operator, sports club, community group etcetera. For something a little different, but still with the reliable Nissan badge on the front, Kevin also has a very roomy eight-seater, 2000 model El Grand coach. This one has travelled only 50,000kms and has an on-demand fourwheel-drive feature. Fitted with roof racks and a towbar, it would be a great way to get the whole family to the beach during summer, with all their ‘water toys’. When winter rolls around again, you could load up the skis and snowboards and head off to the snow in comfort.

This 2000 Nissan Elgrand Coach is fitted with roof racks and a towbar to take the whole family and fit all their gear in style. The 2004 Nissan Caravan has nine seats plus loads of comfort and space for long distance travels.

Pacific Auto Traders also has several vans on the yard that are more suitable for commercial

Kevin and Kar en Cooper, with son Ethan, are happy to help with your next ve purchase or rent hicle al. use. Like the 2004 Mazda Bongo van with 1800cc engine and only 55,000kms on the clock that is ready to be set up for a tradesman or a 2004 Nissan Jumbo high roof panel van with a 2.4 litre petrol motor, ideal for a courier driver or as a delivery van. A big advantage with this van is that there are no side windows, so all your goods and materials can be kept out of sight for added security. All of the vehicles mentioned here are, naturally, available for sale at competitive prices – just phone Kevin for more information – but there are also a number of passenger and commercial vehicles available for short or long-term rental. “It makes sense for new or small business owners to come and have a chat to me,” says Kevin.

Pacific Auto Traders also carry a good range of vans for commercial use, to buy or for long or short-term rental. “I can show them how affordable it is to take a long-term rental on one of our cars, station wagons or commercial vehicles. “This allows them to leave much-needed money in their business for set-up costs, marketing, employment etcetera, instead of a lump sum being used to buy a company vehicle.” Of course Kevin and Karen still have a good selection of vehicles to get you and your friends to the next big Rugby World Cup game. Call in and see them this weekend and see what’s on offer.

New Captiva captures the attention The Series II Captiva has definitive European design lines, giving it a classy appeal for business or family use.

The Holden badge remains a strong magnet for Kiwi car buyers, with the Commodore being a perennial feature of the top five most popular cars sold in New Zealand. It was a smart move then for Holden to also get an SUV on the market to capture the market’s growing appetite for these wagons. Indeed, the Holden badge has managed to now spread itself firmly beyond reliance on the aura of the Commodore alone. This week’s feature vehicle, the Series II Captiva, is most definitely touched by that glow. Available in two variants, a five and a seven-seater, it is an exceptionally well-priced, well-specified machine, that neatly fills the gap in the market for families or businesses seeking an SUV that offers more space in the ‘midsized’ category, but without the top-end price tag that seems to so often accompany them. The Series II model has had more done to it than a simple spring clean-make over around the front. Holden has put some genuine effort into improving further on the previous model in all areas – and succeeded fully.

up front. There is also a new suspension system, more safety features and some interior refinements. The range comes with three new engines, including a 2.2 litre diesel, a 3.0 litre V6 petrol and a 2.4 litre petrol engine in the five-seater model which we tested. Matched

to the super smooth six speed auto transmission, the new combination delivers that elusive match of power to fuel economy that makes it an ideal family wagon. There are some major improvements with the new engine. This 2.4 litre petrol engine is 19 per cent more powerful than the previous one and is six per cent more fuel efficient

Engine: 2.4 litre 4 cylinder petrol Power: 123kW @5600rpm Torque: 230Nm@4600rpm Transmission: 6 speed automatic Wheels: 17 inch alloys Suspension: Front – MacPherson strut and gas dampers. Rear – independent four link with gas dampers Safety: Electronic Stability Control, Brake Assist, Traction Control, Active Rollover, 6 Airbags. 4 Star NCAP Safety Rating Economy: 9.8L/100km Price: $39,990 – as tested Available at: Ebbett Tauranga, Cnr Cameron Rd and Wharf Street, Tauranga. Phone 07 578 2843 Up front, the re-worked dash has a more business-like look about it. The stereo/trip computer console is easy to use and offers a comprehensive menu of information without frustrating your best efforts to access it while on the move. There is a very efficient electronic climate control system and Holden have got rid of the usual mechanical hand brake, replacing it with a smart electronic push button version. The Captiva’s seating has been improved throughout, offering a comfortable, well-positioned driving seat and excellent padding through the passenger seats. It’s great to note ample leg and head room in the rear to accommodate three adults comfortably too. Overall, the interior of the Captiva has been well put together. Everything fits, shuts and clicks nicely and the trim has a quality look and feel that simply adds to the Captiva’s excellent sense of value.

Economy with performance

Improvements across the board

To borrow from a couple of TV shows, it has been more like ‘extreme makeover’ time for the Captiva. Along with a brand new engine and six speed automatic transmission, has come the required re-jigging of its looks

Holden Series II Captiva 5 SX

The dash layout includes a centre trip computer/stereo combination that is easy to navigate. – allowing Holden to leave any lingering doubts about its ability to produce thrifty, efficient engines well behind in the Captiva’s dust. The model tested comes in front wheel drive, with the all-wheel-drive system saved for the 3.0 litre and the diesel engines. It does, however, help to keep this model very competitively priced. Coming in at $39,990, it demands a look when many other similarly-powered machines are only starting well above the $40,000 mark.

Broader appeal

Cabin space is enhanced by the generous boot area and fold-down 60:40 rear seats mean you can leave the trailer behind.

The appeal as a family wagon extends beyond just the price, however, with enhancements in comfort and technology. The rear passenger area provides ample room for the younger crew, the boot space is generous and with the 60:40 folding rear seats, becomes positively cavernous when they are folded down. This increases the Captiva’s appeal as it offers great potential for justifying it being a business vehicle during the week and perfect for family travels in the weekend.

Another feature to bring relief to the wallet is the Captiva’s ECO driving mode, which provides another means to improve fuel economy. With the ECO button engaged, the transmission up-shifts more quickly and down shifts later while softening the acceleration response. It is not a noticeable change, but helps ease the pain at the pump and eases the consumption numbers down into single figures at a claimed 9.8L/100km. Safety levels have also been lifted, with a plethora of air bags and passive safety features underscoring the Captiva’s excellent comfort and safety features. On road performance is plenty adequate for typical driving demands – the engine is remarkably quiet and refined and with the ECO switch turned off, the engine punches up effortlessly for passing. Handling is direct and composed, while the ride reflects the upgraded suspension, soaking up plenty of unforgiving bumps with ease. With budgets tight for most new car buyers and many often looking for a vehicle that has to do many things – from carting kids, being a business workhorse and maybe towing a boat in the weekends – the Captiva fits that Swiss Army knife role well. It proves capable of being all things to all buyers, doing so with a great sense of style, practicality and delivering genuine value for money. By Richard Rennie

Dynamic new Ford Ford models models arrive arrive Excitement mounts with the all-new Ford Focus and Ford Kuga SUV about to make their New Zealand debut. October heralds the arrival of the exciting new Ford Focus to New Zealand shores – and among the fi rst dealerships in the country to have them on display is Ultimate Motor Group in Mount Maunganui. The range includes fi ve hatchback models, four with petrol engines and one with the recently updated 2.0 litre Duratorq TDCi common-rail turbo diesel engine. All will share sporty, dynamic new body styling, with a striking front end and sleek profi le. Models available here include the 1.6 litre auto Ambiente Hatch, the 2.0 litre Trend Hatch, in both petrol and diesel, the 2.0 litre auto Sport. The top-of-the-range Titanium option and a wagon version is also arriving in early 2012. “We’re really looking forward to being able to present the new Focus to the Tauranga market,” says Ultimate Motor Group sales manager Chris Frost. “It has been one of Ford’s most popular cars worldwide for 13 years and this is the third and most dynamic ‘makeover’ it has had.

Interest is bound to be very high.” The all-new Focus raises the bar for affordable innovation, responsive performance and exceptional fuel economy in its class and is packed with more technologies and features than Ford has ever offered in this market segment. Both the petrol and diesel engines offer signifi cant increases in power and torque com

Other highlights of the new Focus, besides a stunning new exterior look, are Active Park Assist, cruise control with Adjustable Speed Limiting Device and a keyless entry system with a push-button start. Advanced airbag restraint systems also feature alongside the usual premium sound system and Bluetooth features. Ford Kuga also arriving soon The next addition to Ford’s already impressive line-up comes in the form of the all-new Kuga. European built, the Kuga has been designed to attract customers in the highly competitive small SUV market with its cutting edge, kinetic design and impressive performance. Fitted with the proven Ford Focus powertrain and a full-time AWD system, the Kuga is perfect for drivers looking for style and presence with AWD capability. The Kuga features a signifi cant array of safety technology, including an electronic stability programme combining anti rollover mitigation and ABS braking with electronic

brakeforce distribution, which combined with comprehensive airbag placements, gives it a 5 Star NCAP safety rating. Other notable inclusions are halogen headlamps, 19 inch alloy wheels, rain sensing wipers and rear parking sensors – to name but a few. Ford New Zealand’s marketing manager Chris Masterson says that the Kuga is a very exciting addition to the Ford range. “Its arrival to New Zealand will raise the bar in the busy crossover segment. “The Kuga’s kinetic design styling also gives it a great personality and tremendous appeal. It has done very well since its introduction into Europe in 2008.” The Kuga offers comfortable seating for up to fi ve adults and the rear seats have a 60:40 split function to further increase the already impressive luggage space. There is also understorage beneath the second row of seats and under the fl oor in the boot Ford will lead the launch of the Kuga range with the top-of-the-line Titanium model with its turbo-charged 2.5 litre petrol engine – a worthy addition to the already popular Titanium Mondeo, Focus and Territory portfolio. To fi nd out more about these vehicles, call in and see Paul Jackson or Chris Frost at Ultimate Motor Group on the corner of Totara Street and Hewletts Road, Mount Maunganui.

Taking centre centre stage stage BMW and MINI premiered the latest models to wide acclaim at this month’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Backing up its record global sales results for the month July, the BMW Group has wowed the motoring press in Frankfurt this month with the presentation of its newest vehicles. Leading the way were the two BMWi concept cars, about which there has been much interest. The BMW i3 Concept is the group’s fi rst purely electric powered production car which targets the future challenges of mobility in urban environments and the BMW i8 Concept – a new generation sports car with unique plug-in hybrid technology that combines a combustion engine with an electric drive system to deliver extremely low fuel consumption and emissions. Also taking centre stage was the second generation BMW 1 Series. Promoted by

BMW as “the epitome of driving pleasure, effi ciency and premium quality in the compact segment”, the new edition features increased leg room, optimised driving comfort and sporty, elegant design. A wide range of BMW Connected Drive systems, such as Lane Departure and Collision Warning, which are available in the 1 Series for the fi rst time, should ensure that all demands from compact class buyers for the latest technology are comfortably met. The 1 Series is also blessed with the rearwheel drive, four cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, deployment of which, on the petrol engine, assures a more spirited performance, while again signifi cantly reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Last, but not least of the BMW models to premiere, was the spectacular new BMW M5. Combining the drive train and suspension technology of a high-performance sports car

The new BMW1 Series... The epitome of driving. with the presence of a luxury sedan, it is superb. Its new high-revving V8 engine, equipped with M TwinPower Turbo technology, delivers an enormous peak output of 412kW and a maximum torque of 680Nm – all transmitted through a seven-speed M double-clutch Drivelogic transmission. Fuel consumption also impressed at 9.9L/100km (EU Test Cycle result) – a reductio n of some 30 per cent compared to its predecessor.

The MINI Coupé, with a distinctive sporty package has premiered in Frankfurt.

Not to be outdone by this classy competition, the MINI brand unveiled its smart new MINI Coupe to the world. The next step in MINI’s range expansion process, the twoseater Coupe wraps up all of the hallmark MINI qualities in a new and distinctive package with a sporty ‘hunkered-down’ feel and new roof design. It is offered initially in two engine variants; the 135kW engine in the MINI Cooper S Coupe and a sporty 155kW in the fl agship MINI John Cooper Works Coupe. The MINI Coupe is the brand’s fi rst model to adopt a classical three-box structure with a strikingly stepped rear end. The roof has a contrasting paint fi nish as standard, accentuating its distinctive design, while the 280 litre luggage compartment behind the high-opening tailgate reveals impressive functionality. There is also a wide through-loading facility linking the luggage compartment to the cabin. With fi ve models now in the MINI range, the brand has succeeded in meeting the specifi c needs of various target groups. It is also offering its customers more freedom than any other car maker, with the ability for customers to confi gure their own car to their own personal style.

Speeding into formula racing

By Laura Weaser

Tauranga racing driver Richie Stanaway is continuing to prove why he is a real contender for Formula One. The 19-year-old was crowned the German F3 champion, confi rming the status with his 11th victory of the season in Race 2 at Assen. The New Zealander, who sealed the title with second place in Race 1 on Saturday, September 17, started the day in the best possible fashion by taking yet another pole position. His lap of 1m 35.196s was more than half a second clear of the fi eld; with Markus Pommer second and Friday, September 16 race winner Hannes van Asseldonk third. Richie says the key to getting ahead comes down to just three things: “to qualify on the

front row, get a good start, and lead into the fi rst corner” “Once that job is done, it’s your race to loose. That being said, it’s not easy to qualify at the front or to get off the start line with a good reaction time and with no wheel spin or without stalling the engine. “When you’re leading the race, after the fi rst corner, it’s diffi cult for anyone to overtake due to the loss of down force when following.” Richie’s victories have gone from strength to strength since he made headlines for an online popularity competition in 2009. Hosted by driverdb.com, Richie placed third and had the opportunity to compete for a place in a Grand Prix shootout. Although the shoot out did not go ahead due to legal complications, Richie has made valuable contacts in the industry and has gone from strength to strength ever since.

Before he was a household name, Richie’s beginnings were in motocross – growing up on a farm. “It was a pretty normal thing to want a motorbike and from there my passion for motorsport grew and I eventually made the switch to speedway and kart racing.” He says making the step up to faster cars in Formula Three is “an adrenaline rush to drive for the fi rst time” “After awhile it just becomes normal and you get used to it, then the only thing on your mind while driving is what you need to do to put a fast lap together and not so much about the speed of the car.” For the 2012 season, Richie says the next step is either GP3 series or World Series by Renault.
