Pacific Toyota took a delightfully fresh approach to celebrate the launch of the all-new 2012 Toyota Yaris, the newest model in Toyota’s world-leading range of small cars. On a sunny evening last week, about 160 guests turned up to Decor Garden Centre in Moffatt Road, Bethlehem for light refreshments and to get ‘up close and personal’ with the smart new Yaris range. It proved to be the perfect setting in which to showcase both the three door and five door models, with guests having plenty of space to look around and to sit inside the cars. Led by general manager Mark Mills and sales manager Chris Churchward, the Pacific Toyota team were on hand to answer any questions and to talk to the guests about the various attributes of both the 1300 and 1500cc engines, as well as the high levels of safety features and latest technical ‘wizardry’ included in the new models. The guests were also treated to superb music and vocals by Aaron Bloomfield and given gift vouchers to spend at Decor. All guests received a complimentary Ultimate Supporter card at the event. Pacific Toyota is now a member of the Ultimate Supporter Cashback Card programme, which offers a wide range of discounts on products and services throughout the Bay. Members simply swipe their card to receive cashback rewards or they can choose to donate their discounts to worthwhile local charities. A highlight of the evening was a demonstration by Pacific Toyota’s top female salesperson, Charaine Hadeed, who captured everyone’s attention as she pointed out the many outstanding features of the Yaris; which include nine airbags, anti-skid braking and a hands-free Bluetooth function for mobile phones. A short ‘quiz’ after her talk drew vigorous response
as guests vied to win additional $100 Decor Garden Centre vouchers. Mark Mills thanked their customers and spoke about Pacific Toyota’s busy year in 2011, which included the opening of a new service facility in Owens Place, Mount Maunganui. “We built the new service centre, which operates in conjunction with our Elizabeth Street facility, so that we can offer more efficient service options for our many customers, particularly those who live in Mount Maunganui, Papamoa, Te Puke and beyond. “It was a significant investment for our company, but one that we were happy to make to ensure that our customers’ needs are being met, not only when they buy a car from us, but also when it comes to having it serviced.” The new Yaris certainly appeared to be hitting all the right notes among those in attendance. Toyota has given it a new contemporary look, both inside and out, while still retaining exceptional interior space and comfort plus improved fuel efficiency and safety features. For more information visit pacifictoyota.co.nz or visit the dealership on the corner of Elizabeth Street and Cameron Road. “It was fantastic to see so many people enjoying themselves on such a lovely evening,” says Chris Churchward. “What a great way to launch this superbly crafted new model to Tauranga people.”

A big car in disguise There is a certain lure about European cars that often leaves motorists thinking ‘I wish’ – only to be put off by a price tag that puts a glass ceiling over their ambitions. It is a pleasant surprise then to find the new Peugeot 308 breaking that stereotype. In recent years, Peugeot has increasingly started to look like the Euro marque of choice, helped by the stylish, daring looks of its models, as much as its increasingly competitive price points. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the highly competitive small to mid-size hatch market, where every brand has a quality offering to push and standing out from the crowd is a big ask. It is fair to say the Peugeot 308 achieves this with ease. Peugeot came storming into motoring recognition in 2004 with the stand out 407 estate. Its look-alike smaller brother, the
to 120g/km. The engine also features Peugeot’s pioneering particulate filters, which help keep the air clean without choking the engine’s performance. Alongside that quiet performance, comes miserly fuel consumption of 6.8L/100km. The 308’s power gets to the blacktop via a six speed automatic transmission that doesn’t fuss under duress, switches smoothly through the range and, with the sixth gear engaged, delivers even better economy with a gentle dip in the revs. Out on the open road is where the 308 feels most at home. On-road handling also typifies what Peugeot has always done so well – putting a well packaged vehicle onto a proven chassis and suspension arrangement to deliver excellent ride quality and exacting steering. The 308 therefore sits nice and flat through corners, soaking up rough surfaces with aplomb and keeping road noise nicely muted.

Comfort and space
Step inside the 308 and there is an immediate and noticeable ‘big car’ sense of space. This is helped by the nicely finished cabin and accentuated by the electrically operated glass panoramic roof, which is something of a Peugeot signature nowadays. In summer you would risk frying the top of your head, but it would provide extra airiness to the cabin on dull winter days and a means to keep the interior toasty warm when the winter sun is out.
for the MP3 player are tucked into the glove box, which, incidentally, also features a cooling facility for drinks – very handy indeed for long summer trips. Both front seat passengers get a height adjustable seat and there is generous width and height in the cabin to accommodate taller drivers and their passengers. The view out the front is excellent, enhanced by the 308 not having overly intrusive ‘A’ pillars that can often impede visibility at intersections and lane changes.
Safe as houses too
A well-packaged and superbly safe car, the 308 sits on a proven chassis and suspension combination, delivering excellent ride quality and exacting handling. 307, quickly followed and then the 308 was introduced after that. The latest 308 has a few changes from the previous model, including a bit of a lift around the grille, different alloys and a steeply raked windscreen to give it an extra edge in the looks department. This essentially helps give the car a distinctive and stylish profile that continues to cut a niche among the ‘hatch crowd’ out on the road.
Efficient power usage
The 308 is typical of the superb diesels Peugeot has been setting standards with for years and features the super quiet and extra powerful 120kw turbo diesel engine. Getting an extra 20kW of power this time is most noticeable where it counts, making it that much quicker off the mark at the lights and less hassled during overtaking and open road cruising. Another statistic sure to please those who are that way inclined is the emissions from the 308 are down
The distinctive Peugeot 308 is a stand-out among the multitude of hatchbacks on the road.
There is a noticeable ‘big car’ sense of space inside the nicely finished 308. The surfaces have a nice, classy tactile feel to them and almost all the dash controls are replicated on well-placed stalks behind the wheel. Peugeot has stuck with the tried and true red digital displays for its trip computer and stereo controls and the inputs
If it is good diesel power-plants and excellent ride quality which have helped Peugeot’s reputation, then safety provides the trifecta. The 308 comes with everything its demanding European legislators require and more. This includes a five star Euro crash rating, six airbags, ABS and electronic stability control (ESP) plus daytime running lights. Nor is it shy on comfort features, like the handy cruise control with speed limiter function and automatic lights. These only enhance what is a relaxing driving experience – one that leaves you thinking you could be cruising along in a far bigger car. Additional features like rear parking sensors and dual-zone air conditioning worked well on the first reasonably warm day of a Bay summer. Side mirrors that fold in once the car is parked and locked, will help save a few anonymously inflicted supermarket bumps and scratches as well. The 308 will hold much appeal as an ‘around town hatch’, but its super quiet diesel engine and smooth six speed transmission mean it deserves to be let loose out onto the state highways and byways. It effectively brings a relaxing, big car driving experience into the competitive hatch back motoring segment. By Richard Rennie

Classic ride with a great history By Laura Weaser
While vintage tractors is what Morris McFall does best and is known for, it is his 1978 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz that turns people’s heads. Morris’ Cadillac carries a special history. With only 2000 of these cars ever produced, it is already quite a rarity, but it is the owner history that makes it so interesting. “According to the car dealer in Napier, this vehicle used to be owned by the USA Department of Defence and it is presumed it was a high ranking officer’s personal transport,” says Morris. “The first clue to the car’s history was the transfers on the windscreen and some follow up information from the original importer. “It could have been like a pool car for senior officers, but I am unsure what service it would have been from.” The luxury car has all the bells and whistles for its day – main features which are now standard in modern vehicles – including air suspension, front wheel drive, weighing more than two tonnes and a V8 seven litre engine. The controls are all electric, including the seats and doors and the radio system includes a radio telephone. Morris says this was the last of the luxury cars before American tax was introduced; here heavy vehicles and large luxury cars were taxed.
$10,950 $91 week
As some what of a luxury car enthusiast, he says “I don’t think I have ever driven something more luxurious”. As well as his Cadillac, Morris owns four other classic cars, including a 1964 Studebaker Lark which he bought from the fourth generation of the same family that owned the vehicle

when it was brand new. But cars aside, Morris’ main collection is his restored tractors and stationary engines. “The oldest tractor is from 1926 and the oldest stationary engine is from 1914. “Many of them I have found in the long grass, abandoned in farm buildings with birds nesting and many stationary engines have been lying around covered in many millimetres of muck and sludge. “That is part of the challenge – it is my little hobby to find an old girl and make them look like new.”
