For a medium sedan it offers large car space, road noise and ride quality. “It is proving to be popular with not only for Civic drivers but also for drivers of larger cars, including the Accord Euro,” says Barry. When it first launched in 1972 the Honda Civic was a global phenomenon, setting the standard the world over for what a compact car should be.

her that sporty look she likes when cruising around on her own. “This is actually pretty cool, I don’t know what I was expecting but this is a lot sportier than I thought it would be. Sporty but practical,” says Jo. “It is so hard to find a new car that ticks all the boxes when you are a working mum but don’t want to look like one, but this is perfect.” Jo is right – there is a great balance of sportiness and practicality to the Civic RS. Starting on the inside with a small steering wheel and low seating position. And with the dashboard angled towards the driver and the centre console placed high enough to feel properly ensconced inside, you actually feel like you are about to take to the race track – in comfort though, of course. The 7-inch touchscreen offers highresolution graphics and the climate controls in particular utilise matte-silver that feel decidedly European. And a really cool feature Jo discovered was the ability connect her iPhone – or my Android – device and ‘mirror’ the smartphone’s navigation app onto the centre screen, which works amazingly well. The new Civic’s boot is huge too; another feature Jo was quick to check out, with a 517-litre capacity even eclipsing many much larger models.
Control that ever so subtly intervenes during enthusiastic driving. The most amazing asset for what is still a small-yet-spacious sedan is its ride quality. Even on semi-low profile tyres the way this Honda soaks up sizeable road irregularities and skims over small ones is, to put it simply, downright impressive. With six airbags – including dual front, front-side, and fulllength curtain protection – plus ABS, ESC, front and rear parking sensors, rear-view camera and LaneWatch blind-spot camera this is a safe little number too.
Power, ride, handling and safety
We reckon Honda is on the money with their new Civic. The subtle blend of sportiness and sheer spaciousness is arguably better than anything else in this segment. We actually went in with mid-range expectations and despite toting a mid-range price, this car delivered top of the range features and performance that may silence even the toughest critics. Matt Batchelor
In terms of performance, the Civic RS is quick and seamless, with massive energy and thrust under full-throttle. The steering of this new Honda is among the best in this segment, it’s immediate, direct and responsive. Through corners the Civic feels light on its feet and agile, and it’s backed by a superbly calibrated Electronic Stability
Some big accolades The new Civic already has a healthylooking trophy cabinet, knocking out the competition in the following categories: • 2016 North American Car of the Year. • 2016 Car of the Year – Autoguide.com • 2016 Canadian Car of the Year – Automobile Journalists Association of Canada. • 2016 Editor’s Choice Compact – caranddriver.com • 2016 Best of the Best – The Canadian Automotive Jury. • 2016 Most Popular Compact Car – edmunds.com • 2016 Best Overall Buy – Kelley Blue Book.
